Good, but still derivative of Marc Bolan and Lou Reed. His true masterpiece is "Scary Monsters".

Great album. Heart wrenching first song. David's signature style all the way through.

I don’t like Bowie. What I like are his greatest hits. When he’s on he’s great but when he’s off he sucks. This album has maybe four great songs and the rest I can’t skip past fast enough.

I love the singles on here, and there's quite a few of them. "Starman" has those amazing soaring vocals, featuring the full-octave jump on the first line (sounds like maybe lifted from "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", but that's just clever songwriting). The orchestration is really nice too, transitioning from glam orchestral on the chorus to that blues guitar riff, which they then double on vocals - nice trick. The title track is a classic, it just does everything right, and it could easily be the picture next to "classic rock" in the dictionary. And "Suffragette City" is just a great rock thumper, elevated by the weird bass synth riff and Bowie's "wham bam!" theatrics at the end. But the deep cuts are B-level at best, and so as a whole the CD isn't as strong as some of the other early 70s classics. They're not bad, just, fine. "Moonage Daydream" is probably the strongest of the bunch, but it suffers from being too long and a little bloated. And in particular, the whole middle of the CD (between "Starman" and the title track) kind of sags. There is a modest diversity of sound and some nice moments in there, taken as a whole. But each individual song is pretty basic on every dimension, and unlike some of the others on here, not especially catchy or energetic. I could've given this a 3 or a 4. I shaded to the lower end because the filler is just a little too long.

Rock n roll suicide felt so different than the rest of the album but I loved the vibes so much.

Certainly memorable melodies. Moonage Daydream's outro is very moving in particular. Definitely a lot of stolen blues that's so common in the 60s & 70s no doubt. Very Theatrical vocals to say the least. Lyrically it is very vivid, unfortunately this makes this all very indecipherable, however incredibly poetic. It's a very balanced push & pull between surface level lines & the larger picture in between them.

I am generally not a big Bowie fan, but I do think this is one of his strongest albums. I especially like the first half. It's alright. I dunno. I think this album is a bit overhyped as revolutionary and groundbreaking because the lyrics are centered around Bowie reimagining himself as a glam androgynous alien, but the music itself is mostly a bit boring. "Starman" is easily my favorite track, though I do also like the opener. If someone put this album on I wouldn't complain, but I probably won't seek it out again. Meh/10

This is an album that's in desperate need of a remaster. I feel like the songs are so much better than the recordings on the album, the production sounds so tinny and muddy that it's very hard to fully appreciate the songs. Despite the awful production the songs are mostly great, but this is an album that is handicapped until it's remastered. Top tracks: Starman, Suffragette City, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide

I just don’t understand the vast volumes of smoke that gets blown up Bowie’s arse. This is fine, Starman and Ziggy Stardust are good tracks, but the rest is just … there. It’s fine, but no better.

This is a classic. I wouldn't listen to it on a daily basis, but it's worth listening at least once.

I don't know if there's a term for this kind of album. It's not quite a concept album. Persona album? Anyway, they're a good idea, an artist letting you know they are trying something different for a period of time. It seems to have died with some notably failures, like Chris Gaines and Sasha Fierce, and with artists opting to either move between acts or just embrace it without changing personas. Maybe we're in the Eras era. On the album level, it works great. It's cohesive, but not repetitive. The songs aren't his best, but they're not bad. It's the kind of album I'd vibe to, but will probably not come back to.

I don’t enjoy this album as much of some of Bowie’s later releases. Just never did much for me, maybe it’s too glam for my tastes. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, just not top-tier for me.

Bowie over an album can be more miss than hit. This is an exception, as its pretty good all the way through. But still I'm just not a Bowie fan and probably never will be. 3

I guess I'm just missing whichever chromosome makes people go nuts for David Bowie. I think his music is fine and understand why people see him as a sort of cultural touchstone. It's possible that I've just heard all these songs so many times that there is nothing new to discover in them. I do admire that Bowie was not afraid to take chances with his image and sound. Unfortunately, this brand of early-70's-British-Glam-Rock comes across as very mainstream in 2024.

The better of the Bowie albums I've heard so far. Many hits on this one, but still not enough to really warm the cockles of my heart.

It's hard for me to relate my feelings on this one. While I enjoy the theatrics and songs on this, none of it really blows me away like it does for many. I think it may just be a generational thing, or at least a time thing, where it will just take a bit for Bowie to grow on me. I know its a concept album but half the time I have zero clue what he is on about lol. All of that aside, I really appreciate this album for its out of the box thinking for an album from 1972. Crazy to think about that. I will revisit Bowie for sure and I think this will grow on me. But for now, a 3.

Just Bowie

I like a lot of Bowie's music. This one is probably my least favorite of his library though.

Some stand out songs, the rest is good but not amazing

Enjoyed some of the more "rock" songs. Moonage Daydream had a cool ray gun guitar solo. Starman was fun and seemed familiar. Suffragette City was fun too. Some of the more spoken or ballad songs were weird and not for me.

I don’t usually like Bowie’s main work but this was fun. Probs won’t listen to it again though.

Of course this is a very famous album. Of course the great song Starman is on it. Of course Ziggy Stardust is also quite good. Of course Lady Stardust is ok. Of course the rest is simply not so great. A important album in the career of Bowie but in my opinion not one of his best.

Theatrical pop that is over-the-top and quirky at times (sometimes even veering into cheese), but the catchy melodies and very good production help most things land. Highlights: "Five Years" (piano ballad), "Moonage Daydream" (proto-glam, guitars just need to be a touch louder and crunchier), "Starman" (Beatles-esque with jangly guitar and double-tracked choruses), "Ziggy Stardust" (Bob Dylan goes glam) Notable: "Suffragette City" (verses definitely influenced by Lou Reed)

I know Bowie is a legend and Starman and Ziggy Stardust are classics, but other than that ... I am just not that into it

Nice album, that I just recently listened to a podcast about. This was one of the first albums with a story on it, less of a collection of songs. It is cool that this came in my recommendations only a week later. I do find some of the songs a bit lack-luster. But Bowie never was my style.

This album was great. The start of it was not as interesting as the second half. Or day I say 1/3 wasn't as interesting as the other 2/3. That's how fractions work. David Bowie always surprises me with albums that sound very different but also sound very Bowie at the same time. I appreciate that approach when one can pull it off. Separates the musical geniuses from the musical snobs I guess. Not my favorite record of his. But I cant deny its brilliance.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (2012 Remaster) by David Bowie 6.9 This is Ana album where I think I am going to come back in like a few years and be like how did you possibly rank this so low and I can understand why someone would think that to be honest but it is just my opinion. I think that this album although being a solid showing is something that had a few songs that really stood out to me like Star Man Suffragette City Rock ’n’ role Suicide and that was it. I think it might just be how I need my music to be stimulating and fast but it was fine and something where if the songs that I added I have on repeat for a long time it might go higher but at the moment it is not going to be something that will get scored where it is. I asked Dad if he liked it and I will see what he says later but for me it was a solid album but nothing that I willl not listen to again.

This was not my first listen of this album in its entirety. I am a David Bowie fan, but this record never had impact on me that it had on my friends and colleagues. My album favorites have always been LOW and OUTSIDE, and EARTHLING, with a just smattering of singles here and there from all of his other albums. "Starman", "Ziggy Stardust", and "Suffragette City" are the only tracks off this album that have ever captured my imagination. Depending on my mood on any given day I can go for "Moonage Dream" and occasionally I am up for "Rock n' Roll Suicide"; but I never been into the rest of the album, no matter how many times I hear it. I recognize its importance in the evolution of pop star as art/artifice persona as well its importance as a concept album, but I find it difficult to justify giving it 5 stars or even 4 stars, and I certainly don't think it is the 9th most important album of this exercise, which is where it sits among the global rankings on the list as I listen to it today. So 3 stars it is.

I always think of The Martian when Starman comes on and it is a highlight to me on the album. I think that I don't love David Bowie music, it kind of all sounds the same, which vocally is not as fun, but instrumentally is nice.

Maybe it's the glam rock or the punk-ish sound, maybe it's his voice or nonsensical "eccentric" lyrics, but I'm beginning to think that Bowie just isn't for me. I realize many people speak highly of him and this album in particular, but i just don't get the reverence. Album is still good (especially the music and arrangements), particularly Starman.

I saw Bowie touring this album in Memphis and slept through the show - fans were mostly abuzz about the costumes. Listening to the album now, I find it chock full of filler tracks with a few really good ones. Like some critics at the time of the release, I find the "concept" incomprehensible.

Well at least we're a third of the way through. I did like this one slightly more than the other Bowie albums, "Starman", "It Ain't Easy", and "Suffragette City" were my personal favorites from this album. However all that being said I still don't think he has all that great of a voice and a lot of his stuff I think just sounds so fake and naive. He's still not my style and I have to go through another 6 of his albums. He is not good enough to justify 9 albums being on this list.

Every single track on this album is a masterpiece. The man basically invented a new genre. Rock (even Fantasy Rock) is just not my favorite, so this is right on the edge of four stars, but not quite there.

Third time encountering Bowie here, and this time around I had a much more pleasant time listening to him than with Blackstar and Low. This can definitely be attributed to this record attempting something different or being at a different time in his career; but now I know I can enjoy his rocking when it has pop elements and his personality shining through in a less esoteric way. While there are certain melodies I got hooked on and instrumentation that suits my tastes more, I ended up indifferent to some parts even when understanding what it was trying to do (such as Suffragette City). For the first time I didn’t actively dislike any of the songs, yet I wished there would be at least one that could reach an even higher level where I’d want to back to it over and over again. 5.5/10

I preferred Blackstar as an album overall - I do think it is a stronger concept (don't really get Ziggy Stardust). This album has some real belters, including Starman, Ziggy Stardust, and Suffragette City. Unfortunately nothing else really stood out. Despite 4 albums, I'm still solidly on the fence with Bowie.

It's good but it meanders and doesn't really seem to know where to go. This album is the drunk man lost in a city he's never been to.

I feel bad because this is considered as one of the greatest of all times. It just doesn't do it for me though. I find it way too boring for me. Maybe it'll grow on me. But maybe it won't. I don't know. I did listen to this album like half a year ago in late 2022 and I found it to be alright. But upon relistening to it I just didn't want to finish listening to the whole thing.

My sort of era and DB has produced some great stuff. Band is good but mostly it’s not something I would add to any playlist.

I might just not get it but I'm really not a fan of Bowie...

This album is not all about the music. It's as much about acting and styling and story telling. The Ziggy Stardust persona was a big part of the success, I imagine (I wasn't born yet). That's the main merit of this record, not the music. The singing is a little flat almost all the time. The band sounds more like individual musicians than like a solid unit. The drums sound weak and they drag slightly. Guitar sounds boxy. Overall the timing is a little shaky. The songs are not bad, but not great. Similar to what the Small Faces and the Kinks already did better before. All in all it's not terrible, but the current 4.3 average rating is too generous. Favorite song: Suffragette City.

Never actually listened to a full Bowie album. The music is really good - guitar is sick. Definitely better on second listen. Overall I really like the songs but I’m not that into Bowie - I’m not super getting his appeal - I think it’s mostly because I don’t like his voice

I’ve been greatly anticipating the day I got another Bowie album. You see, I’m not a fan of David Bowie. I never “got” Bowie. When Moonage Daydream came out a few months ago, I enthusiastically sat through it, hoping to learn enough about David Bowie that I could start to appreciate his music. I came away from the movie with a lot of respect for him as an artist, and looked forward to the generator giving me another Bowie album, so I could listen with fresh ears. I have listened to this album before and I hadn’t really cared for it. Sadly, I still don’t really care for it. I fully realize there is probably something wrong with me. I wish I did like him, but I just don’t.

Not one of my favorites out of David Bowie, but it still has some ok bangers in here. Not sure what the exact rating system is for this site but I wanna give it maybe 5/10 or 3/5 ???

Glam Rock

I love David Bowie. This is an essential glam-rock entry and worth a listen. Great musicians and production. "Ziggy Stardust" and "Suffragette City" popular favorites. "Five Years" is my least favorite. As much as I like this album, it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Three stars is the best for the overall album.

I love how the rock n roll spirit is found throughout, and the raw production really makes this album feel human and alive. I love the sort or anti-hero storyline, that is probably a sign of the times and the desperation of people to find someone as their voice or direction. But the songs didn’t speak to me as a whole as much as other Bowie albums, and for that reason I can only balance the rating out to a 3.

David Bowie n'est pas un artiste si exceptionnel. J'aimerais d'ailleurs que sa communauté cesse de le couvrir de fleurs et ce dans les plus brefs délais.

J'ai, après près d'une dizaine de ses albums générés à l'aide de mon génateur pirate (me contacter en privé pour plus d'informations), enfin apprecié un album de l'androgyne David Bowie. En effet, quand ce dernier ne fait pas des expérimentations musicales ou sexuelles étranges, sa musique s'en trouve de suite plus agréable.

Some undeniably famous all-time classic cuts on this one. So why can I never connect with it? I think a lot for me has to do with Bowie's voice. I like the silly/stupid concept album, I like the sound of the album, the first ~4 cuts are really good, but I get tired of it all after that. I don't know, this has always been a tough call for me - like, if "Ziggy Stardust" comes on the radio it's kinda cool but by the time I get to it here (track 9) it's nothing special for me. I never much liked "Suffragette City" Weak review - I just have never been much for Bowie overall (outside of "Low"). I think the best I can say is that at my most generous I kind of like it. Like, Dotty. Like. High points: "Five Years" "Moonage Daydream" 5/10 3 stars.

Some good standout tracks. One of his better albums in my opinion, but where Bowie is concerned I’ve never really been able to get into his music fully. There’s always a good track or two on each album, but the rest just doesn’t grab me.

Yeah quite enjoyed this some quite interesting songs and some bangers like starman. It was gentle, aqward and weird but in a good way.

Listened to this album several times and keep wanting to resonate with it, but overall it doesn't happen. That said, I've had Moonage Daydream stuck in my head for days! 3.5

Is that a sign for Kanye West above the starman? It's been a while since our last Bowie album, maybe since the first day. But when you've got moonage daydream and starman on here, this is a great one. Still isn't turning me into a huge Bowie fan but I'm learning to appreciate him more.

Is this the best David Bowie album? I kinda hope not, because if it is, then I'm definitely not much of a Bowie fan. I don't know what to say, I think I was looking forward to this one since I've heard so much, but damn David Bowie just isn't that engaging or exciting to me. A couple songs I liked, but it's just not doing much for me overall. He's the most represented artist on this list, and we've had a few by now but nothing blowing me away. I'm starting to doubt that'll ever happen. Favorite tracks: Moonage Daydream, Suffragette City. Album art: The famous cover that predicted Kanye West, a much better artist. I hope someone reads me saying this and gets mad. 3/5

This is a “time machine” album: I wish I could go back and hear it brand new, before “David Bowie” fully existed. I feel like I missed the good party.

Bowie is one of those where I see the influence he has but just don’t particularly enjoy him

Good songs, played well, by an obviously very talented artist. It does nothing for me, I never fell into the Bowie fandom as so many did. There's no real reason for it, he just isn't for me.

You can tell this album has a lot of musical talent within it. I'm not a musician or a critic so I can't appreciate it as much as someone with an ear for that but it was fun to listen to.

This is David Bowie's fifth album. It is a glam rock piece that is also loosely a rock opera concept album based on Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The story goes that Ziggy is a rock star sent to Earth to be a savior before the apocalypse, but falls from grace due to his own ego. This album was praised highly at release and charted high too. Most consider this album to be Bowie's breakthrough. Not based on musical prowess (which is still great), but the album had the biggest cultural impact. To date, this album has sold about 7.5 million copies worldwide and is Bowie's second best-selling album. I loved the music on this album and the fact that the songs went together to form the Ziggy Stardust story. This album has to be a rock cornerstone of the 70's, and I do agree it's one of David Bowie's best albums.

Best Song: Ziggy Stardust. Might be worth it just for the line "Making love with his ego". Worst Song: It Ain't Easy. Not bad, just forgettable. Overall: Very theatrical. Certainly one of the albums on this list that feels most cohesive as a single concept.

Some good songs here but appears less cohesive as a concept than when I first heard it a multitude of 5 years ago.

David Bowie had almost no singing range, but consistently insisted on shooting outside of what little he did have. When he doesn't do so here, you can kinda listen to it. But that all added up together makes up like 3.5 tracks out of the 14 on the album. But that stuff still feels like filler. Everything else here is fatally flawed trash with wretch inducing vocals. As an album with less than an EP's worth of material, this shouldn't exist. But then the paradoxically awesome Ziggy Stardust does somehow manage to legitimize its existence.

If I'm purely rating this off first listen, which I guess is the point of this, it gets a 3.5. Would probably get better upon more listens, but it didn't really excite me first time round, there are Bowie albums I enjoyed more. I think perhaps my expectations were too high going into this...

This is one of those albums that I try with every few years but never seem to get. Despite its chronological proximity to Hunky Dory, an album I absolutely love, this one has never really grabbed me. There is nothing wrong with this album, but it sounds dated compared to Hunky Dory, which has a really timeless feel. Part of the issue, I think, is the lack of classic songs. This album has a very coherent feel, it sounds good, but when I listen to it, I keep waiting for a song to really draw me in, but I don't think this really occurs until Suffragette City, which is nearly 2/3 of the way through the album. The album is consistently good, and I feel like I "got" it better than I have in the past, I just don't understand why this album gets held up as THE early Bowie album. It's good but not great.

I respect Bowie. But I don't really like his music all too much.

I have come to the conclusion that David Bowie is the most grossly overrated artist of all time. This did not impress me much.

Glam rock and art rock built from electric guitar, piano, driving drums, melodic bass, and theatrical vocals feels like walking into a small theatre where the curtain rises on an elaborate alien rock opera and everyone onstage seems completely committed to the performance. There is plenty of colour, drama, and memorable songwriting, but for me the theatrical persona can sometimes feel more interesting than the music itself. I can see why the spectacle is compelling, yet I often remained slightly outside it, watching Ziggy perform rather than being pulled into his world.

I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, but I’ve always felt that Bowie's mythical status overshadows his actual musical achievements. "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" is a good example of this. While the album is widely regarded as a milestone in rock music, to me it's just average glam rock, sometimes with orchestral accompaniment, featuring songs that try too hard to be edgy. The story of "Ziggy Stardust" seems more important than the music itself. Above all, Bowie’s vocals are simply too theatrical and over the top here. I realise that Ziggy Stardust's stage persona, image and provocatively presented, ambivalent sexuality were a welcome break with convention for young people of that era, offering an alternative to post-war prudery. However, when "Ziggy Stardust" was released, I was only five years old. This album has never held any significance in my personal history; other Bowie albums played a much greater role in my youth. Musically, the album simply leaves me baffled. What’s so great about it? Would it be as well known today if it had been released by other glam rockers, such as Slade or Mott the Hoople? Hardly. Once again, Bowie’s image (or more precisely, Ziggy's stage persona) outshines the music itself. Of all Bowie's overrated albums, this is perhaps the most overrated of all. Sorry folks.

Among his peers, he is a legend, but I don’t like one song on this album. I would rather listen to the labyrinth soundtrack, which I’m sure is not his best work.

The sound was nice. The arrangement and sound of each track was great. I didn’t really enjoy the vocals. I couldn’t tell that it was a story if I didn’t know.

I skipped some songs and got bored overall.

The playing on this album is excellent and some of the songs have stood the test of time. However the screeching vocals have not. Starman aside im not sure there is much here.

Easily Bowie’s most overrated album and period. The great stuff came later.

so underwhelming, but i'm never going to like a rock opera ever. i agree with all of the early reviews of this album that call it odd and indulgent but david bowie had so many tricks up his sleeve that i can't get mad. you sit through this so you can get let's dance obviously

I think the best thing to come out of this album is this pizza place I went to in Phoenix once. It was called Ziggy's but then you go through the cooler in the back and you're in a pinball bar called Stardust. Coincidentally, also the second best thing to come out of Phoenix, AZ. The first best thing is Stevie Nicks because her music is actually good.

I had no idea this album was about Bowie’s alter ego! I could picture the scenes in my head. The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust made for good listening.

Pretty good Bowie album, still not really a fan

I feel like Bowie is hit and miss for me. So far “Five years” is really grabbing me. I wonder if the sounds are intentional or limitations of what the technology could do at that time. It’s sounds think and weak and like it was poorly recorded. The feel is there and the vibe is there, but some of the sounds put me off. Moonage Daydream and Starman left me flat. “It ain’t easy” is better. “Soul love” is a great tune. Two songs in and I feel like I might be getting the Bowie hype. This is pretty amazing stuff so far. And I think the sounds on the first song were intentional. These sounds are “smoother” is the best way to put it. Enjoying Lady stardust. There are moments I enjoy, but I really think I’m not a Bowie guy. Ok. Now I’m to the “hits”. Maybe I’ve just heard this stuff too much?

I really dislike Bowie’s voice. I like it when he’s doing the “Bowie thing” and kinda sounding a little nasally but otherwise it sounds like he’s screaming into the mic un-melodically. I love the writing of these songs but I can’t get over the vocals. Starman is phenomenal of course but the first three didn’t leave any lasting impression. It ain’t easy is good too! Ziggy stardust is famous but I’m not the biggest fan of. The lyrics are weird and it’s not really super fun to listen to. Suffragette City on the other hand is a straight banger. The rest of the songs weren’t memorable. Honestly makes sense why the songs that I know are the ones I do, the others just aren’t super memorable.

41/1001. Own? Yes. Do I love it? No. I guess I have been buying Bowie albums since every good record collector and music appreciator does. But besides some good songs they are quite a drag to listen to, and this album is one example. I don't know how this repeatedly gets picked to top 100, 50 or even 10 lists, just because of Starman? The playing is lazy, the drummer sounds like he is almost late, the story is sas stupid as Bowies interest in pantomime... for me the highlight this time was It ain't easy - and that turned out to be a cover song. IMHO Bowie is way overrated.
