Reviews (page 11 of 13)

It’s good but inconsistent imo and I’m not huge fan of “operatic rock”.

Dare I say a bit of a letdown... good, but not great.

Not familiar with a lot of these songs, but it was Queen, so pretty good.

Night at the Opera is right there and you go with Queen II. Not it for me, a little too queen-y but still an enjoyable listen.

An undisputed giant of musicians, this is Queen showing their technical prowess, but I didn't find much that really stood out.

Move to hear some non-chart stuff. Although you can’t beat the chart stuff.

def no sheer heart attack, but still good

09/18/2022 Finished listening to this on fi’s birthday :)) tbh….this album is good, but it’s not GREAT. Sheer heart attack and night at the opera are untouchable, so I hope that both of them come up on this list eventually. — Tbh, I am going through a hard time in my life right now. Trying to learn how to sit with pain, not run away from my problems, or look to alcohol to drown out all the noise around me. I’m scared and I feel weak, but I want to be strong and overcome these obstacles so I can look down on them from the hill and never go back. I’m going to try with everything in me to get better, to be better for me and everyone else that I love.

Good instrumentals

Sounded more like a Led Zeppelin album than what I expected from a Queen album. Not bad by any means but felt like it lacked the elements that would differentiate them stylistically from other rock bands of the area as well as the classic songs that make them an all time great band. As such it fails to really stand out to me among Queen albums or among albums in the genre/era

I really like Queen, always have, but this album is so unknown to me. I think this album is very influential in their later albums. 3/5

This feels like proto-Queen. All the individual bits we there but it hasn’t quite coalesced. Still great musicianship and I enjoyed it, but they got better I think.

Just your average Queen album. Nothing too special here, never been a big fan. Favourite tracks: - White Queen Overall Grade: 3/5 (B- / C+)

I love Queen, but Queen II is definitely not a top album for me. Outside of “Seven Seas of Rhye”, the songs all sounded fairly experimental, which of course I’m fairly thankful for. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the “classic rock” vibe you get throughout the album. There’s just not much that I hear here that was a deep cut/hidden gem. Nothing jumped out from the album that I need to hear again anytime soon. But that said, definitely not the worst album I’ve been gifted with in my reviews so far.

Very well produced and assured. It's like the rockiest Queen song but a whole album of them. I know 7 Seas but none of the others....... I think I'd need to listen several times before I started to get into this. It's worth the effort so maybe I should?

weird, not sure why I liked it but I kinda did

Don't much love Queen but this didn't offend me.

Holy shit chills from the start. No real catchy hooks that are that memorable. But the sounds and journey was great.

Queen II is the second album by British rock band Queen. This was the first album for the band in which they began their signature sound of multi-layered overdubs, harmonies, and various musical styles throughout the songs. The art rock album was released to mixed critical reception and is one of the band's lesser-known albums aside from the fans that follow the band like a cult. The album was well produced and captured the style of Queen almost perfectly. I enjoyed the album, but I do think there are better Queen songs out there than the ones on Queen II.

*see the title Ogre Battle.* “Hey! They wrote a song about my divorce!”

Spent the whole album waiting for bohemian rhapsody but then realised it's not on this one. 3/5.

Loud and driving. Can be a little abrasive

Grew up with parents being big into queen, but never heard this album before. Probably due to my parents only having the 3 greatest hits albums on cd. This albums feels different to the queen I know, a lot heavier, and more prof rock. It’s good and probably should be on the list, but no where as good as the best heavy rock bands of the early 70’s, led zep, black sab. Queen went on to become Queen in later albums.

Not sure what to say... Started listening and was suddenly 6 songs in and didn't realize. Hardly a difference in songs to stand out from each other. Everyone plays well, March of the Black Queen and Funny How Love Is are pretty solid and have a different sound from the rest of the album

a solid album, but not their best

This was just okay. None of the songs jumped out at me and it ended up just being background noise.

queen is a band where i know the hits, but have never listened to their actual albums. not sure what i was expecting, but it wasn't to hear a solid rock album!

This is a tough one. I really like opener, but despite Freddie Mercury's voice and some fun ideas along the way, this one never really sits down and gives me a hug.

This sounds like, by turns, Uriah Heep, Be Bop Deluxe and Wishbone Ash. But also, like Queen; the stacked, hysterical vocals and archness in Mercury's delivery belong to no-one else. Embryonic, quite proggy, but interesting and listenable for all that. 'March of the Black Queen' rocks pretty hard. Oh, and 'Seven Seas of Rhye' is one of my all-time favourite Queen songs, so there's that, too.

This is such a prog record! I was kind of stunned when I saw the cover art and then looked at the track list and realized that A) this isn't the album "Bohemian Rhapsody" is on and B) I don't know damn near any of these songs on this record. And I call myself a fan. Pssh... In my defense, none of these tunes jump out as singles or anything really approaching the radio hit level songwriting of their classics. They're just of a different (again, proggy) breed. Overall, I liked it. But like most things of this ilk I will have to listen to it numerous times to begin to appreciate what they're doing here. And I plan to! I mean, there's a fucking Queen song called "Ogre Battle." I've got work to do. Some fun stuff on the Wikipedia page for this one, too: "Rather than the conventional Side A and Side B, the album was split into "Side White" and "Side Black", dominated by May and Mercury compositions respectively.[22] Although some have interpreted it as a concept album, Queen biographer Georg Purvis stated that it is "not a concept album but a collection of songs with a loose theme running throughout."[9] Mercury later confirmed this in a 1976 Sounds interview, citing that "it just evolved to where there was a batch of songs that could be considered aggressive, or a Black Side, and there was a smoother side".[23] The "White" side is very diverse: four of the five numbers were composed by Brian May, one of which is an instrumental. Freddie Mercury sings two songs; May sings one; and Roger Taylor sings the closing track, which is his only composition on the album. John Deacon played acoustic guitar on "Father to Son" in addition to normal duties on bass guitar. Mercury composed and sang all six songs on the "Black" side." I'm surprised there was such a clean division of the songwriting duties. That seems like the kind of thing that would cause some bands to have their egos hurt and lead to a break up. Glad that didn't happen here.

Déjà eu LP

Album as a whole is pretty average. Not a whole lot going on that's overly unique or impressive. Queen is becoming the Queen we know in this - it's definitely a stepping stone album.

Fun cuz I really like Queen and I've never heard most (any?) of these songs. Now I can claim in know the deep cuts. I see the pieces that will form Queen's megahits, especially on the back half of the album. But the pieces don't quite fit together yet. Some of the songs are goofy (those might be my favorite). Some rambling psych-folk-rock songs. Some watered down Led Zeppelin (see "Loser in the End")? Not the catchy, quirky, punchy, glammy stadium rock I want yet. 2.5 stars (mixed) but round up to a 3.

OK so when bohemian rhapsody came out I did a deep dive into Queen and was somewhat let down. I mean bar was high, but I figured given the fact that they have like 15-20 songs that are unbelievably awesome, their discography must be generally solid with many hidden gems in there. But mostly I realized the greatest hits are all you need, and even though none of their albums are bad, a few are overall good, there's a pretty big gap between their best and not-so-great works. So I give 3 stars, and thats kind of unfair because if they didn't have so many other amazing songs I might have enjoyed this one more but something about bright lights and dark shadows?

It's Queen, it's a good album

Rockig, Energiegeladen

So having only ever listened to one Queen album, The Miracle, when I was a kid, this will be interesting, I recognize zero of the song titles here. Thought BR would be on it given the cover, but nope. Ok. So yeah this sounds like Queen (apart from the exceptions below), except you just haven't heard the song eleventy billion times. Oh and sometimes it's batshit crazy (ogre battle). My favourite song by a distance is one that doesn't sound like Queen and instead sounds more like quiet Led Zep, Some Day One Day. In fact, Billy Corgan 100% knows and likes this song, whatever he says, basically half of Siamese Dream (an album I love, but credit where it's due) is this song. The Loser sounds even more like Led Zep, loud version this time, creditable Robert Plant impression from Roger Taylor taking over vocals. Funny How Love is sounds a lot like good era Beach Boys so that's good. So, more tolerable, but mostly sounds like Queen, so I'll pass thanks. Appreciate Queen for what they were and there is a lot to like but it's not for me. Overall did enjoy the listen but probably will only listen to the Smashing Pumpkins one and the Beach Boys one again.

Orges and black queens. This is a nerdy album. Solid in its groundings. It feels more like Queen writing the soundtrack to their DnD game than a full serious album. Doesn't make it bad. Just weirdly enough, it didn't feel epic.

QUEEN IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BAND. BLESS YOU FOR THIS GIFT THIS FRIDAY. Transparently I'm a fraud because I'm realizing I know none of these tracks. Father to Son is a great track

Viime aikoina kuunnellut näiltä lähinnä tuplalevynä hittikokoelmaa niin odotukset täysin epärealistiset. Ei mitään paskaa, mutta ei kyllä valoittanutkaan. Taipuu kuitenkin kolmoseen.

It’s fun, but not as cool as I expected from such an iconic rock band.

not my type of music but good album

Not bad. A little hard to find your way in but nice listen. Highlight: "Some Day One Day".

Yeah idk I couldn’t find myself engaged

this is definitely one of the queen albums of all time. some good songs, some boring songs. ehh

3.5/5 i'll have to relisten, it's too close

Some great songs, and it's very Queen, but I was a little disappointed tbh, probably just because none of the classics were on this one.

Didn't dislike but also didn't fancy it. Freddy M was solid in lead and that scientist fellow May seems to be effortless in his playing

This was a bit... Disappointing? I guess I expected it to be better, have catchier songs. Not horrible, just not as memorable as I had hoped. 7/10.

I lost my reivew from yesterday. Queen II is good Queen, but their sound has not fully matured yet compared to where it will be on A Night at the Opera 3/5

Enjoying White Queen. March of hte Black Queen also kind cool Otherwise a bit forgettable, given how good Queen can be

Felt quite noisy/messy. To be honest, I also wasn't in the mood for this. It's clear why you hardly ever hear any of the songs on this album.

This is probably the kind of album that really grows on you the more you listen to it, but after a first and second listen I can't honestly say that it has really grabbed me. Not bad, I mean it's Queen, but not great either.

Queen version of prog

IMO, not Queen's best. Very ordinary and just did not excite. C-

Better than Sheer Heart Attack. Really liked Father to Son. Didn't know Mercury didn't sing all their tunes.

Queen are an incredible singles band but I'd heard that their albums weren't up to much, so I was surprised to see a record featuring none of the mega-hits make the list. Quite interesting. All the ingredients of the classic Queen sound are there, but it also seems like they were considering becoming a fantasy-prog-metal band instead.

I've never been a fan of Queen, quite controversially. I understand why they are considered the legendary band that they are, but their music is just not for me That being said, I think this is their first album I have listened to in full. And it contains none of the big, unavoidable hits. And, at the risk of shocking you, I can reveal I actually quite enjoyed it ! Doesn't outstay it's welcome, the guitar solos arent too busy and overpowering. White Queen and Black Queen are both good songs. As is Loser in the EndEnd.

It's a little hit and miss, but there are some nice tracks on here. Interesting to hear an early Queen album before most of their most famous songs came out. The very lightest of threes

Pretty good album. Had some bangers. White Queen slaps. Ultimately nothing I want to put in a playlist.

This is good. Surprisingly none of the big hits. But solid.

listened to again great lead up to some of the most iconic albums of all time

Heavy rock album

Very glam

There were basically two stages to Queen's career. The early British hard rocking band of their first three albums, then after Night At the Opera, the mainstream radio friendly hit machine. I must admit, I love Opera, it's an all-time classic and what precedes it gave us hints of what was to come. The band was always a strong vocal band, but they also rocked hard, especially on Queen II with a touches of prog and art rock. They were starting to develop their sound and though there were no "hits", most of the songs were solid. Fans of their later work will not like this.

Not too bad, a bit jarring on some songs that made me want to turn it down.

Nothing standout in my opinion or any reason to be excited by this album, just alright.

very clearly early queen you can see where they are going but no track stands out

Not bad! While there are no standout songs, it's quite a cohesive album. Still, as far as Queen is concerned, call me when you get to News off the World. The stuff before that was just the warmup act.

Decent album, liked most songs, just not enough to love them.

Pretty good. Not my favorite that I've heard from them

A good album. You can hear elements that will become more resolved in later albums. This one doesn't approach the following albums in terms of greatness but it is still very quality, very Queen.

Actually thought as an album this was a bit more enjoyable than A Night At The Opera. I can respect it but nothing I'd personally throw on all the way through, some really good songs mixed with some just ok ones.

Not my favorite Queen album. Don't get me wrong, Queen is one of my top three fav bands. But I wasn't a big fan of the mystical kinda stuff.

I liked the instrumentals and liked Adam's thoughts on the album.

First time listening to this. It's solid

Seven seas of Rhye is a great song...Queen at their best. Some day one day is very zepplin-esque

Much more of a rock opera feel to this than I was expecting. Ok overall.

Definitely Queen, and obviously a foundation for greater things to come, but there was nothing particularly remarkable about this album to my ears

ok, but won't save

pretty blah. Nothing stood out to me or caught my attention while it played in the background.

P good, but didn't have a lot of standouts imo

Don't remember this one

Pretty okay, not their best work but for an earlier album definitely shows signs of the future greatness to come!

Meh. Technically probably pretty good, but I just don’t really like them. Even though I feel like I should.

For me, Queen has always been a "singles" band. As a result, I don't think I recognize any of the songs on this record. I like how the tracks bleed into each other. The sound is definitely there (it's Freddy and Brian, forgodssake!), but the songs are taking a back seat to the album format, it seems. Highlights: The guitar and vocal harmonies; the bass and drums staying out of the way; The lead guitars (see "Father To Son") rival Richie Blackmore's finest moments in Sabbath (Who am I kidding? They're better).

An edgier side of Queen that I didn't really know existed. Can hear a lot of Zep and Who. All feels a bit disjointed almost like it started as a concept album then decided against it half way through. March of the Black Queen is a huge tune. Some parts verge on glam metal which informs their future direction I guess.

The opener-into-first-vocal-track transition is immaculate Queen-does-prog, with the glammy guitars doing a decent impression of the best kind of synth line. Unfortunately, while the rest of the tracklist flows well technically, the musical heights of that moment are only present again at the end of March. The raw material of great Queen is here, but the LP feels distinctly carried by studio work. The sitar imitation is the most egregious case of musical half-effort. It's crowd-pleasing overall, though, and despite a little drag in the middle ends up sounding just about the right length.

Can’t go wrong here

pretty bland for queen album lmaoo looks like they read tolkien shit before recording some songs about ogres

A heavy 3, borderline 4

Rocks harder than I expected and quite consistent throughout. A bit too many vocal overdubs, overproduction and weird lyrics for my tastes but I can see what they were trying to do.

Sounds of an eclectic and triumphant empire, handicapped only by an insistence to anthem-ize tenderness 3.1

Good Queen album that I have never heard before. Most of these songs were new to me and I did enjoy a chunk of them. There were very few though that I would want to listen to on the regular.

My brain is empty. Nice singer but I can't remember anything else about this album except there's a song about a pervert or something.

Sounds like a classic, but feels so unfamiliar to me.

good album. you can hear the "queen" seeds being planted.

the march of the black queen, nevermore, white queen

A bit over blown. Disappointing, but not awful.

Quite fun, surprisingly heavy, but not very memorable.

Average album to say the least. Not something I would revisit by choice, but it’s definitely listenable nonetheless.

Queen is just forever going to be the band I listen to only under extremely rare conditions. You don't just put Queen on during a dinner party—you put Queen on during a road trip when you're trying to keep everybody awake.

Amazingly talented and great to listen to Queen songs I haven’t heard a million times, but this album didn’t massively grab me. Won’t be rushing back to it

So I’ve flogged this album for the last two hours. There really is two distinct sounds to the white and black sides (a+b) as the info page writes. The latter half really has those distinct queen harmonies we are familiar with with , that dramatic almost operatic sound. At first I was not really into it. Reckon it might have been my preconceived notions of queen the band being unraveled live in my ears track to track on the start of this album. Now 5 or six rotations in I really like the diversity for sounds and vocal styles from track to track and from side to side of this selection

I was expecting something quite different having read the Wiki, but to me this album is Queen honing their skills and finding their eventual sound that we are all familiar with. Overall, I thought it was cool but I wouldn't be in a mad rush to listen again. One for bigger Queen fans than me. 7/10

A Night at the Opera\" veröffentlicht. Passt.

I love Queen but had only heard maybe one or two of these songs before. Maybe I was disappointed that we got a Queen album but it wasn't one of their better known ones. Some songs were pretty good but I'll have to give it another listen sometime later.

After A night at the opera hit like an atom bomb in the early 70s I quickly gobbled up their earlier albums: Queen, Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack and I was a huge fan of their bombastic glam/prog/metal sound with tons of vocal over-dubs. You can hear them starting to gain traction in this album and there are some real gems including Father to son, Ogre Battle, White Queen and Fairy Feller. But the best was yet to come

I enjoy Queen but do not have this album. Haven't recognized a song yet, but they are interesting and unique. Glad this was on the list, it was a lot of fun.

A fun listen. This album was much campier than I expected. Brian May also really shows off on this album. No song really stood out to me though

1974, Art rock, hard rock, glam rock, progressive rock, ziemlich heavy für Queen, manche metal mäßig, trotzdem typischer Queen Sound, Übergänge 10/10, normale bis gute 3

strange at times, I think I really enjoyed only 1 song.

A fun listen. A bit too much of a rock opera for my attention span though, I think? Quality music though.

Pretty decent stuff. 7/10

i definitely, definitely know, love, and appreciate every queen song i’ve heard (although i could live without ever hearing someone song karaoke to bohemian rhapsody ever again). i’ve never heard this album but i’m here for it.

Very 70s!

Surprising lack of hits for a Queen album. Still good

It's Queen lol. Not their best album imo, A Night At The Opera tops it by a mile. Does that make me basic? Probably, but I stand by it. March of the Black Queen is really good tho.

Each Queen has to grow into it's full potential

Not the best queen album but still good

Not a lot of their hits but I liked it.

3.5 stars, not the album of theirs I would have picked but solid nonetheless.

Surprisingly sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin in a lot of places. I obviously appreciate the more bombastic elements of the album that helped lead to their popularity. I probably would rate this higher if I listened to it at the time it came out, but now, it doesn't do a lot for me.

objectively this is a good album, but i didn't care that much. i've heard better rock songs. his voice is epic but i dunno man lol

06/07/2026 I have to say that I am very disappointed in this. I guess there is a reason why I have not heard of these songs... it was all a bit pants. Spotify listeners: 53.2 million

You could draw a line from Led Zep to Muse through this album.

210. ok

Good sound but nothing special.

Very "epic" queen sound but I didn't really like it. Nothing excited me... Is this a run of mediocre albums or have I become a miserable git in my old age?

Unexpectedly dull, had to check I wasn't listening to Led Zeppelin by accident at one point

Strong contender for Most Overrated Band of All Time™️ 🙀CRAZYQUEENFACTS 🙀 This was released just ten years before Queen played to a segregated audience in Sun City!!!

It a fan.

Ois parempiaki

They have much better albums

While I like some Queen, it wasn’t this. Freddie’s voice is still great, but this record was kind of boring.

Every song seems like it’s from a rock opera.

Most people won't admit this but Queen is not an album band, they're a singles band. Their hits are hits for a reason but the rest is mediocre and often overblown, bordering on masturbatory and Queen II is a perfect example, without any of their hits this album just misses the mark

Disappointing, for such a big band

Really wasn't feeling this. Even fewer elements I could latch onto than on Sheer Heart Attack.

This, for me, was an album where the band were still finding their sea legs. There is little elements of what was to come and it’s got the Queen trademarks but I just couldn’t buy into it. It’s all 5 to 6 minute epics about Goblins and Fairies and too proggy for my taste. The instrumentation and Vocals are amazing but the songs just aren’t there for me. I’m glad someone must’ve took them aside and told the band to get their act together and write songs with more pop sensibility. Highlight for me was Seven Seas of Rhye and it’s no surprise that it’s the only song from this album that would be entertained for a greatest hits package. 2/5 Better was to come from Freddie, Bryan, Roger and John.

It is very much what it is. I just happen to really dislike it.

It’s like they are trying to be the Darkness but aren’t as good. Seriously though I think I mildly liked one song on this album and the rest of it I can easily pass. Never liked Queen really, this is more palatable than some of the later stuff but still does nothing for me

Proggy hard rock. Queen are great for theatrical bombast and guitar solos, not much good for melody or the concept of less is more. Seven Seas of Rhye is a banger though

Actually a lot better than I was expecting, albeit a bit of a mixed bag

Start of elements for queen, too much may not enoufh freddie

After a certain age the glamour of Queen is completely lost

There are some decent tracks on this album and I do like Queen. The problem I have is that the symphony opera type rock songs are not my jam, but I do see the appeal to certain people.

normal

I'm going to annoy a lot of people and call Queen a singles band. Admittedly a lot of very good singles, but they did make a lot of music Listening to this as an album left me cold. I dont like prog and i dont like 70's metal. I can see the foundation of their sound and its well played, but it lacks the killer tune and i found it boring.

Queen is a hits band. Not a deep cuts band.

Queen are hit-making machines; there's no arguing about that; two official best-of compilations are proof of that. The paradox is that, compared to these compilations, listening to their albums in their entirety is quite difficult, especially with this second record. This is the band's most progressive-sounding, most art-rocking album; they've never reached such a level of pomposity, bordering on buffoonery, since. Not only are the songs long and multi-layered, with constantly shifting rhythms and fantasy lyrics about princes, queens, and ogres, but there are practically no pauses between them to catch your breath and take in what you've just heard. The foundations and sound of the much-loved Queen are already here, but it's a good thing they later turned down the epic faucet a little.

This is just not for me. Who knew that Ogre Battle would be my favourite song?

me esperaba mas

Objectief: Niet slecht Subjectief: Echt saai 3.5/10

Vermutlich nur für Hardcore Queen Fans genießbar.

7 seas good but didnt really dig the rest. Some great riffs

Which album made Queen popular? Sounds like it wasn't this one. Judging by this being the third (3rd) Queen album I have endured thus far, it seems like the critics and Robert Dimery should probably have put Queen in their as-yet-unreleased "1001 Bands' Discographies You Must Hear Before You Die" and freed up a few spots in this book for, y'know, Queens of the Stone Age, or other legitimate shit they refuse to acknowledge.

Album 197. Queen II (https://open.spotify.com/album/0NouBnbXRJKFWzm9LwCW0K?si=UEDMTT26ThuIILtBVNWEAA) — Queen (1974) I'm unfamiliar with Queen except hits, so... It's a second studio album and it didn't catch me at all. Yeah, it's good no doubt, but...meh, I don't really know if I like it or not. I think I am rather indifferent. It feels like a lost piece of great ancient influential music that has been buried under thousands of other human and musical layers 2/5 No liked songs

Not my favorite work of theirs

I just don't get any enjoyment from listening to to Queen. This one changed up to pace a bit but no song really clicked.

I was a little surprised to not recognize any of the songs on this, but that probably explains why I didn't really like it. Queen's best stuff is enjoyable for me. I do not consider this Queen's best stuff. Which I suppose means that I don't really like Queen - I just like their "hits." I'm OK with that. I think I would give this a 2.5 but I'm rounding down in honor of the title.

this is doing nothin for me ogre battle p fun 2nd half definitely better but they're still kinda sliding off me. it was fine

Lots of opera, not enough rock. It sounds like a dungeons and dragons game broke up to make an album. Not at all necessary.

I've never heard these songs before so it was interesting to listen to Queen's earlier album. The first half of the album didn't sound like Queen at all. It felt like they were trying to find their sound and finally found it at "Ogre Battle". This song had echos of their trademark sound. "Nevermore" reminded me of the beginning of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with the piano and sounded like the Freddy Mercury I grew up listening too. Rating it a 2 because I didn't like most of the songs on the album. I was surprised to rate this one so low since I love their hits.

Naw. Simply not a fan of Queen. Never. Does this make me a bad person?

Brilliant band, but nowhere near their best on this one.

Ogre Battle is great.

i really like queen. but this…

A testament to how patient labels were with bands back then. It’s good but it still doesn’t sound like them.

I get they are one of the biggest rock bands in the world but their sound for most of their songs on this album sends a bad shiver up my spine. It is a unique sound, unlike anything out there.

No es muuuy mi estilo

I love multi influenced non genre conforming music. I also have the unpopular opinion that Queen is vastly overrated. Don't get me wrong, there are songs that I absolutely love... the majority however falls flat for me. I cant deny their influence and appreciate how talented they are as musicians.

It’s queen pomp rock at the beginning of their imperial phase. No surprises Freddy vocals and guitar solos.

More interesting than expected due to fantasy themes and prog compositions

Queen is not for me i fear :/

My harsh review: A progressive-rock effort out of a British band who seems to be trying to find their voice. No recognizable songs on the entire album, which seems like it could be the soundtrack to a knockoff LOTR cartoon television series. Nice guy review: An interesting effort on Queen's sophomore offering. Still quite a distance away from who they would become, but you can hear some of the elements coming together. Hadn't heard any of these songs before. Album really stands out to me for the time it was recorded/released (and their competition) and the length of time they took to record it. Not a lot of bands were given that length of runway back then, so they either paid a fortune for their studio time OR someone in the record industry backed the hell out of them. I'd probably have to listen to their debut album to have a better guess which...

It was fine but not a particular standout album. I like some of Queen’s music, but it’s also not really the type of everyday listening either.

This is a confusing album, a little Led Zep, Ted Nugent et all, which is ok... Then there is the more 'classic' Queen, who honestly just bug me. Dare I say MCR did the same thing with more heart? Queen albums are consistently all over the place. Queen might be my ultimate 'Greatest Hits' band. These albums on the list are pretty below the standard I was expecting from such a revered band. Poor.

Solid 2.5 star album, some decently underrated songs for sure

I like Queen, but I think there's a reason I've never heard any of these songs

i don't know if i've ever listened to a queen album in full. i can't say i enjoyed this very much? per wikipedia, guitarist brian may noted how the band's sound developed from this album is based on overdriven guitars, but to my ears it sounds incredibly overcooked? most of this sounds like downright muddy prog art rock in a way that feels like it is striving for far more indulgence than is warranted by the material. it just feels.... messy, i don't know. obviously there's a lot more to queen than this album alone but i'm kinda surprised at how much of a miss this was for me.

venía de uno mejor pero buena experiencia

The return of Queen. It's been about 340 albums since Sheer Heart Attack. I, embarrassingly, thought this was the Bohemian Rhapsody album because they homaged this album cover in the music video for that song. As a result, I mentioned I was surprised in my Sheer Heart Attack review because I thought they had abandoned their distinctive, operatic style for a more of-the-time hard rock sound. Embarrassing. Shameful. Anyways, let's get into this one. Ugh. More of the same - bummer. I consider myself to be a decently fun-loving person, but I just can't jive with hard rock. The music is too dated and blown out for my liking. Most of these songs passed by without me really noticing, but you can see a bit of their characteristic sound peeking through in the music - particularly during the latter half of the album. The songwriting still isn't all there, however. There were no Killer Queens in here, nor any songs which held much of my attention. Book time. The band's first hit in the UK. Seven Seas of Rhye was their breakthrough track. It didn't achieve as much success in the US on both the album and singles front, but it still performed modestly on the charts. I've always held the conviction that Queen deserved four list albums, but I've just clicked through their releases on Wikipedia and now I'm not so sure. They've always had the people's love, but they've been pretty polarising with the critics. Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera are just about the only albums of theirs with unanimous critical acclaim. That's honestly surprising to me - I thought this band was more well-respected. For that reason, I am lowering my Queen quota to three, and I think this album has a solid place within that trifecta. I cosign this inclusion.

About as heavy as Paganini.

Everyone knows the Queen hits and I include myself in that. This was much more prog like than I'd imagined. They're certainly a great bunch of musicians but without another couple of listens I don't know if this would really grab me a bit more as it didn't on the first spin.

(Disclaimer: I’m the problem.) Here’s the deal. Queen is big and iconic. They mimic a lot of art rock sounds but make them new and fresh. And as a result they inspired many artists in different genres. And unfortunately, to me, they sound like a lot of current megachurch, christian music. Which is not their fault. But so off-putting to me that I can’t really stomach it.

umm i did not like it at all. fairy feller's master-stroke and nevermore were my favorites, those ones i actually kinda liked. but ya i hated the rest. just really not for me. oh well

I like Queen, but this isn’t the Queen I like

Classic rock with no specific highlights

Rather mixed content on this album and doesn't provide me good vibes

Not the best Queen to my ears.

I've never really enjoyed Queen. While they are technical musicians and very capable in their art, it sounds very forgettable to me. Their Greatest Hits type compilation albums have enough of good songs on them that I don't mind hearing them, but this one went pretty much by unnoticed like the proverbial water over ducks back.

I don’t mind this but it was a bit forgettable for a queen album.

Ploddy and dull, lacks any of the stuff which made Sheer Heart Attack somewhat enjoyable

I absolutely love Queen and they are one of rock history’s finest bands but that doesn’t mean their albums get an automatic entry onto this list

I mostly know later Queen, so some of this came as a surprise. Not really my cup of tea.

Rock, 1974 -> 2

I guess I feel the same way about "Bohemian Rhapsody" (which I know is not on this record) as I do about Queen II as I do about Queen's whole career: there are a few moments which are truly amazing but they are lost in bloated grandiose histrionic grating excess.

The lesser known Queen, for a reason, I’m afraid. I almost felt as if I was listening to. Queen parody band, and the silly medievalism didn’t help.

Signs of better things to come

Heard Before? Only "Seven Seas of Rhye". Notes: - the production is probably the best thing about it - a bit muddy in spots but VERY dynamic, with great use of overdubs. - all the performances are committed and well-executed, if restrained by Queen's later standards. - while an interesting novelty to hear precious prog and proto-metal from Queen, it really suffers by comparison. - it doesn't help that there are zero great songs, although side two was silly enough to hold my attention most of the way through. Verdict: From this distance, it's a very well made fan-only curio. Listen Again? Nope.

Detesto a Queen

Never has been, never will be for me. Classic rock verging on classical rock. Massive yuk

it's kind of a lot

This is fine. This is my second Queen album on the list and neither has blown me away.

Meh… sophomore album. Not my cup of tea. I think Feddie Murcurey might be 🌈

Disappointed in this one.

Queen II's iconic album cover shows the four members of the band, which is a pity because they really should have a fifth member as the editor. There are lots a great ideas here that kinda goes nowhere, buried under even more mediocrities. I have tried to like this album for a long time, but I just can't.

Bahhhh this is so hectic help

How there is a Queen album out there that I hasn’t heard a single song from is beyond me. But these were all pretty average so that must be why.

Album 41 Top 3 favorites off the album: Nevermore, March Of The Black Queen, White Queen (As It Began) Have heard Queen many times before, but nothing off this album. It has the usual theatrical qualities characteristic of the band, but felt different somehow. I don't hate it, I don't love it (something I never thought I'd say about Queen). Neutral. I've been slacking off on my reviews, so I'll try to give something worth reading here. More sitar, yay! I can't remember which one, but there's at least one track in here that reminded me of Peter Gabriel during his time in Genesis. Some of this interested me lyrically, other things not so much. Since this is the first Queen album I've listened to all the way through, it was fun to hear Roger Taylor on The Loser In The End. This won't stop me from listening to Queen, but I might not come back to this album for a while. We will see.

If this album gets in, we are going to have some absolute stinkers on here. A mid bands worst offering.

not mad at queen, but i kinda only care for bohemian rhapsody

When will I be free

Not a good Queen album. Terrible production.

Not as great as a night at the opera

This is just plain hard rock with some operatic theatricality coming out. But is quite plain. I guess they would peak later when embraced multigenre blending. The most interesting song is The March of the Black Queen. At least this one does not have any of those tiring overplayed hits. And no, I don't care about fantasy-themed lyrics.

maybe im in a better mood today. liked it better than sheer heart attack, though my general vibes about the music stayed the same. 2.5

Interesting! Didn't hate it but not a ton of "wow" moments.

Where's bohemian rhapdy

Take me down to Sun City, where the audiences are white and we're paid richly. The band clearly don't mind sounding bloated on this record but more egregious behaviour was to come 10 years later.

Not a fan of Queen. Still not a fan. No standouts. Respect Freddie's voice but this is forgettable.

Toller typischer Sound aber auch nervig

Like discovering a whole new queen album I’ve never heard before.

Not a big fan.

I have never really understood the draw of Queen. If there was a Queen album that would give me the perspective I needed this wouldn’t be it.

In all fairness I did not finish the album, it was fine but I didn’t love it or feel very interested

The only track I knew was 'Seven Seas of Rhye', this is because Im not a Queen fan. I read this was their groundbreaking breakout album, well done Queen. My ears weee not in awe of it mind you, but at least they didnt get offended. It was ok.

This is not the worst album I've ever heard but not sure why i had to listen to it. Much better Queen out there.

It does all the things that Queen does but doesn’t work for some reason.

More Zeppelin and The Who then Queen sounding. Still a band trying to figure out their sound. There are a few songs not sung by Freddie Mercury which are the weak points.

You can see where it's headed. There was a bit of what Queen became in a few of these tracks, but for the most part it was a mess. I wasn't exactly sure what it was trying to be.

I I’ve Queen but not this.

Really nice instrumentation and vocals of course. The mix is really muddy I wish there was a remastered version on Apple Music. If I actually did listen to the remaster then that’s pretty disappointing. None of the songs stuck out to me on here but it was interesting to listen to early Queen aside from the mega hits that everyone knows. Oddly enough the song I enjoyed the most was the “The Loser in the End” where Mercury isn’t singing no offense to him but that was the most interesting one for me.

This is my first serious introduction to Queen, and if this is considered to be one of their good albums then I don’t understand how they’re a highly regarded group. It sounds like they’re recording every song standing ten feet away from the microphone, and the only way you can distinguish the confusion of noice is because they pan instruments so far to the left or right. There’s some interesting ideas on this album but they’re executed poorly. It’s not charming, it’s not vintage; it’s just disappointing.

I've never heard any of these Queen songs and I may not ever again

Patchy not a huge fan of Queen but the loser in the end was brilliant

Maybe I'm not the target audience for this album. Come to think of it, the only Queen song I really like is probably because David Bowie is in it. Undeniably a good record, just too theatrical/ musical coded for my liking.

Honestly, not great, I thought this was pretty disappointing. I love Queen’s biggest hits, some of the best music of all time, but I’ve never really fallen in love with many other albums. Especially after hearing she heart attack, which I gave a five, this one is pretty dang rough outside of a few tracks. Two out of five.

145 albums and THREE have been Queen. Sorry Queen you don't deserve three albums on a list of things to hear before I die. This is the weakest of the three and I wonder if Brian May was on the committee. This is their prog era and it's just songs about Ogres and other bullshit. Unfortunately, I don't think they were all that good at prog. It’s all technique and nothing else. Freddy’s range! May’s layered guitar parts! Words about fantasy worlds! Prog!

It is Queen, but this is not my Queen i like.

achei ruim glr

I don't love Queen, not sure why.

Two discs worth of this operatic stadium rock and I've had my fill. Not for me. All I can say is thank god punk rock came along to stop this type of masturbatory shenanigans.

It was... ok. Felt like a lighter Led Zeppelin album. Definitely not what I expected. I think the album was a little less than the sum of its parts.

Just boring tasteless rock music. Most overrated band of all time. Rip freddie tho. 5.1 2.5/5

Very boring, did not like or get into at all

As far as I know I’ve never listened to a Queen album track before but am obviously familiar with their singles. I’ve always found them to be incredibly dull and a real shame that someone with the voice of Freddie Mercury was wasted on such a boring band. This album doesn’t really change my mind, and doesn’t have a single banger on it.

Idk I just feel like they are struggling with this one. Not my favorite album by them by far.

Fantasy inspired, guitar driven noise with moments of beauty

Boring queen

Overly ambitious, self-indulgent

First half is fucking annoying and bad but the second half is fucking annoying but good Fav song: March of the Black Queen or Fairy Feller's Master Stroke

Big swing. Big miss. Great cover photo though.

Never been a Queen fan outside of a few songs. Not sure if this is some LOTR fan music but I really wanted to like Ogre Battle. I did not.

Closing track is a banger, but otherwise, not a lot grabbed me.

Songs NOT added to playlist Procession Father To Son White Queen Some Day One Day The Loser In The End Ogre Battle The Fairy Tellers Master Stroke Nevermore The March Of The Black Queen Funny How Love Is The Seven Seas Of Rye

In 1987, when Queen were my Favourite band, Seven Seas of Rhye was probably my least liked of their Greatest Hits album, appearing just before the Stadium Rock/Live Aid friendly We WillRockYou/AretheChampions. Seven Seas was the only song I knew from this album, was probably the one I liked best from it while still remaining bottom of their Greatest Hits album for me. Queen albums: I think 2 down, 1 to go.

This was an album to show you what Queen sounds like without any hits. Its.... fine.

Honestly not my favorite of theirs

Nt Brian May kitarrid on vahepeal duublis või on lihtsalt väga palju vokaalpartiisid.

Fantasy or medieval rock has to be one of my least favorite subgenres. 2/5

I love Queen, but tbh this was a bit disappointing. Surprised.

There is just too much scream-singing.

En bit ifrån We are the champions och We Will rock you, vilket jag uppskattar. A-sidan innehåller några rätt okej proggiga rocklåtar, som White Queen och Some day one day.

I hope this isn’t the last album someone listens to before they die, otherwise they will die in agony. (Jk it wasn’t THAT bad) I did find this album a bit boring, I don’t think I’ll go out of my way to listen to it again.

Classic Queen imagery. The start of that classic Queen layered sound. Yet, a totally underwhelming and slog of an experience for the grand payoff to be Seven Seas of Rhye. I feel like this album needed another single to help float it.

As a Queen hater, this is totally, entirely fine. It didn't speak to me but it didn't annoy me either. I'm so thankful this didn't have Bohemian Rhapsody on it because I really hate that song. But yeah not my thing at all.

As its Queen II, I'll give it 2 stars. Never have been a big Queen fan and this was whatever. It has the Bohemian Rhaposdy video as the album cover but that song is on a later album. Only recognize one song on here too.

Not for me

I don't "get" this album. I should probably sit down somewhere, preferably in a forest, and listen hard to understand it. Personal note: listen to it again. Right now, a 2/5

Exhausting

Theater kids will LOVE this one

Highly overrated

Rating: 5/10 Meh.
