Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Good.
5/10 Highlights Funny How Love Is
Not the queen I was looking fir
Not a band I love, but they sure were a lot more fun & creative later in their career. Once again I'm surprised by the need to include an early, formative (but not actually very good...) album from a band on the 1,001 list.
Sounded like the same song on repeat.
it's okay, just not my cup of tea
Never been a Queen fan, this sure doesn’t change my view. Totally meh. It’s not unlistenable dreck, but it is just, whatever.
Passt
Pomposo e ridondante
typische queen.. goed voor een nummer, een hele plaat is vervelend
I was really surprised that I disliked this one
OK - as far as Queen goes.
This album was wild. I consider myself a fan of Queen, but honestly I hadn't really heard any of these songs. Ogre Battle? The Fair Fellers Master Stroke? What's going on? It was cool, and I get that this sort of was the start of what was to come with the vocal layers and stuff like that, so I appreciate the artistry of it. Just not sure it's going to make it into my regular rotation.
I’d rather listen to their Flash Gordon tune 11 times consecutively than listen to this nonsense again
Brian May is a guitar god but otherwise yawnnn zzzzzz 2/5
The first half is very smart, very retrained. Exactly how I like Queen, with their eccentricities paired down and focused into a tight formula. It makes me think “huh, maybe I like this band more than I realise?” The second half is unleashed Queen with all the bells and whistles, which I would imagine is the more exciting half for a fan of the band. For a non-fan it sounds like an annoying kid in school desperately trying to get your attention, doing backflips, puffing out their cheeks, making unusual noises. I was relieved when it ended.
This album is hard to judge because the band SOUNDS incredible, they’re absolutely on point for what they were writing. But what they were writing was vague prog nonsense, not at the level of their peers. Queen didn’t really come into their own until A Night at the Opera, and this is still a band that’s not fully formed yet. The opener and the closer are killer, but this is a pretty meh album from a great band.
Nothing really grabs me. A bit too theatrical.
Ehh
Decent album but sounds like a musical, bit too Queen-y as far as Queen albums go
This one starts out pretty good as just a solid 70s rock album but then after Ogre Battle it starts to do all of the Queen stuff and loses me. So I'm going to remove a star for tricking me into thinking I had missed something about Queen for about 6 songs and then hitting me with all of the choir hooos and staccato stuff
no me engancho, escuche un par de canciones pero no es mi tipo.
I liked how this album had "harder" songs on it, and I really like Queen singles, but I have yet to find a "good" Queen album.
Bombast noch relativ experimentell. Überraschend unbekannt aber auch nicht sympathisch
Inget som sticker ut, inget som fångar mig, och tyvärr bara ointressanta versioner av mindre röriga klassiker från senare album. Förlåt.
I used to like queen a lot more but they've grown dated on me
This album is the definition of "a lot of noise signifying nothing." I enjoy and can appreciate Queen but this album is stuffed with overdubs, every second filled with over-produced airy-fairyness. Plus, I find it boring with very few of the hooks that would come with their later music. it's redeemed somewhat by songs like "Ogre Battle" and "Seven Seas of Rhye" but, overall, not an album that I would return to.
I think this is the weakest Queen album. Love Queen; don't love this.
Meh. Never been much of a Queen fan and this didn't do anything to change that.
There are some good songs and it does flow but its a little one note and I don't love the note.
I like Queen but this album was a little boring and a little weird.
I was not a fan of this album. I was excited to listen because I like Queen’s singles and hits, but I’ve never listened to a full album from them. It was not what I was really expecting.
Outside of the hits, I've never been super into Queen. Not totally sure why. Their songs and specifically this album sound complex and layered, but it's in a direction that I've never been too interested in. The mythical creatures and stories just don't appeal to me. Ogre battle was a decent rocker, but the rest is just not for me. This made me less of a fan. Someone tell me what I'm missing.
I can't stand Queen, but at least I'm close to done with them
Metal!!!
Medelmåttig 70-talsrock och musikal nummer. Bättre än Led Zeppelin.
Great band, not one of their best albums
Not one of queens best.
You've got to really like the whole operatic thing to get this.
Ugh.
not my thing
++: Ogre Battle, The March of the Black Queen, Funny How Love Is +: Procession, Father to Son, White Queen (As It Began), Some Day One Day, The Loser in the End +-: Nevermore, Seven Seas of Rhye -: The Fairy-Feller's Master Stroke 5,0/10
I love Freddie's vocals so so much. Really like Father & Son. But I can't really be arsed with this long proggy stuff and the rest just blend into a bit of a mess
Queen is great. This is a Queen album. But it’s not a great album. All the elements of the sound are here, including the quirky interludes. But here, the sound hasn’t congealed into a masterpiece. It’s dramatic and fun of course, just not as fantastic as Queen can be.
Not great ima be honest it was relentlessly annoying
Overall meh, not too much to celebrate here
Maybe my strongest contrarian opinion is finding Queen boring. I can't really articulate why, but I just don't find this album compelling. It's the beginning of the sort of stadium rock that is occasionally good for a song, but never translates well to full album. And this isn't them at their best either. That's not a very good articulation, I confess, but I don't like queen and can't articulate why any better than that.
I'm only lukewarm on Queen and this album did not convince me I'm wrong for it.
I’m amazed at how many songs Queen has that i’ve never heard. It was just ok. Nevermore was my favorite, though.
Sorry everyone. I hate Queen. Sue me.
Didn't grip me, but nice to hear something completely different from a band as famous as Queen
Outside of the hits which are amazing, I find the rest of Queen so incredibly mid, it’s hard to believe they’re as famous as they are. I think it’s all riding on the hits.
I don't like Queen. This didn't really sound like a typical queen album though, more like a bad led zep album
Formulaic, bombastic, soulless. Maybe just victim of some of the more excessive progressive rock trends of their time. Brian May’s brilliant guitar chops were wasted here. Plenty of talent throughout this band, but it got lost in marginal music.
It’s a tough listen 50+ years later. It feels like a parody of itself. Spinal Tap. Or a muddy demo by Tenacious D. I was a bit of a Queen fan in my teens. I thought this would be very familiar, but it wasn’t. I must not have liked this album much. It feels like they’ve over-reached. Playing music that’s beyond their skill. May isn’t yet the great guitarist he will become.
A band whose basic ingredients (the choral Brian May guitar, piano and Freddie's vocals) leave me a bit cold) but this at least has stuff I've not heard a zillion times. Still two stars.
Not bad, but no hits really.
Ok. Didn't jump out at me like their others
Break out album for Queen, but we’re pretty much on the same page here. Over dramatic (even at this point in time and in their career.) As vinylists, we liked the idea of Side White / Side Black vs A&B (marketing.) Black was definitely superior, March Of The Black Queen by far the best cut. All told, we get why it’s on the 1001 Must Hear List but it only represents an inflection point in Queen’s journey and doesn’t hold up well. L = (1.8*s) J = (2.4*s) They just get so much better as they mature, it’s tough to go back and rate them objectively as if it’s 1977. We’ll be hearing from them again…
Never really listened to Queen, apart from the big hit singles. This was a big let down
Their albums are pure shite apart from that one ok song thats ok that gets selected for the best of. Biggest music scam of the 20th century, soz Fred x
Prog bollocks II
I do quite like Queen, so I feel a bit bad that I didn't like this album, at all. Felt like I was just waiting for Seven Seas Of Rhye to hit.
I'm sure some people love it but for me it is just ok - have not listened to much queen and I can see how pretty the music can be but I don't think I'm going to listen to a lot of these songs multiple times. Songs on Liked Songs Playlist: Father to Son
I'm fine with this not having any of the hits on it, but Queen seems like they were still developing their sound here. I can see the vision that led to their success, however this album falls short.
amigos, pra mim não rolou
I knew none of the songs on this album, and after listening to it, I'm ok with that. Some guitar playing caught my ear, but the rest was uninteresting.
Hace años que no escuchaba este álbum, me pareció bastante flojo, aburrido.
никак
I get it, but just not for me.
Too prog for me.
Freddie Mercury is an LGTBQ icon. He's also a remarkable vocalist, and all I've heard indicates that he was a kind, generous, gentle person. But Axl Rose is a prodigious singer too (tho a dick, which makes him easy to hate), and I can't stand Guns N' Roses. I think it must be the structure of their songs that drives me crazy - so often there's a cliché crescendo, or a drop of some sort, that's unjustified and wholly unheroic. No song here besides 'Some Day One Day,' which nurtures an ethical quiet, deserves the size it wears. And far too many forevermores and nevermores: 'It's forevermore that I wait'; 'Ogre battle lives forevermore'; 'Don't send me to the path of nevermore.' I guess it's the British and Tolkien in them. Not for me.
Not gonna think about this too much but I just don’t really care for Queen atm
I don't enjoy listening to this band
best thing about this band is Freddie Mercury's Mineshaft shirt... i hate queen
Side B is the stronger side. There are Queen songs I like spread across their discography, but none of them are on this album. I don't get them, and I never will. 2 Stars.
I enjoy Queens really big hits but I’m not a huge fan. This double album jut didn’t do anything for me.
Thoroughly enjoyed but it’s a classic that I probs wouldn’t listen to on repeat. Cannot believe it’s live
Disappointed in this one. Was expecting Queen II Electric Boogaloo but got pretentious choral drama. Not their standard fun bangers with interesting compositions.
I just don’t like Queen
Disappointed. It’s Queen, but they get so much better on the next albums. Great musicians but the songs just aren’t as strong
I like it when these guys are just straight-on rocking out but that is few and far on this album. All these dabblings with theatrics and harmonies are done much better later on. Roger Taylor’s ear-splitting castrato harmonies are especially egregious. Standouts: “Father to Son”, “Seven Seas of Rhye”
I really like a lot of Queen's music and a lot of prog-rock, but this one was hard to get through. It sounds like a mash-up of Rush and Led Zeppelin with some Yes thrown in. Hard prog rock? Also, did anyone really like most of these concept albums? Only Seven Seas of Rhye stood out to me. The rest is a few interesting bits lost in a sea of meandering prog-ness. Even the great bands miss sometimes.
queen is like taylor swift, you’d get good mileage out of a best of compilation but individual albums are swathes of nothing
I prefer pop Queen to prog Queen.
I've never really got into Queen beyond the obvious singles. They seem to be at that intersection between rock, pop, prog, and glam rock where I get into an uncanny valley sort of situation. And it just doesn't do it for me. It's the sort of thing that never got played regularly on the Friday Rock Show when I was listening in the 80s. Certainly from an album point of view, this was disappointing. I get why other people might really enjoy it, but it just didn't excite me. My wife loves the band, but she wouldn't usually play this album either. There must be a good reason for that.
Not worth the time
Dear AI, please create some Queen B-sides. You can see why most of these aren’t on the greatest hits album
Prog is just not my thing, and I could only make it a few tracks in before losing interest. This album sounds like a not-fully-formed version of the band. Weird choice.
Fav song: Sone Day One Day Never been the biggest fan of the whimsical side of classic rock. Some tracks were OK and quite impressive productions for the time period, especially with all the guitar stacking!
So disappointed that I didn't vibe with this; it's such a legendary album. Somehow or other all the tracks seem to blend together. Maybe it's just coming at it later, being already familiar with the "Queen sound" this album introduced?
Not a fan of this one
The march of the black queen. Glam rock just isn’t my thing. I can appreciate it but
No, just plain no.
I do not fw Queen. At all. But it's arguably their best album and a few songs are catchy so it gets a few stars for that.
I can understand why this album isn't bigger. Seven seas of rhye is nice but the rest of the tracks were forgettable.
Not as good as earlier stuff. But enjoyable enough!
Wanted to like it, but just couldn't get into it.
Wanted to like this more, but couple of skips in there.
apart from “the march of the black queen” nothing caught my attention.
Love Queen and always have. Just not this one.
Eh…I don’t know, man. It’s a bit much.
I just don't gel with Queen. I hadn't heard most of these songs before though, and did enjoy "The Loser in the End" I would rather listen to Zeppelin
ughhh idk. def not my personal cup of tea but i think queen can make anything sound ~cool
Disappointed by this album but there's a reason why Seven Seas of Rhye is the most popular song
Perhaps more famous for its iconic cover than the music, Queen II showcases the bands blossoming ability to blend opera and rock and roll. Tones of mythical fantasy roll over the whole album, although songs like Loser in the end are jarringly different. I’ve always liked Queen, but have never listened to Queen II cover to cover. It’s not a bad album by any means, it’s just missing that extra punch to make it stand out. Seven seas of Rhye and Father to Son are easily the most memorable.
dont enjoy
Know their hits. Don't really know the catalogue. Don't know if this sold me. I'm not into this type of rock. Kind of disappointing....
Lotsa music. Individual songs are okay, but not in a play-it-again way.
I’ll say that I didn’t completely hate it, but like the rest of Queen’s output, it really does not do anything for me. I just don’t like that 70s excess prog-ish sound. It’s so self-aggrandizing and artificially constructed. So while it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve listened to on this list, it didn’t change my opinion of Queen at all. Not a fan.
I was not familiar with this Queen album and it was not my favorite.
Everything I like about Queen is on The Works. Everything that annoys me about Queen is on Queen II. I was born in 1979. Go figure. Unlistenable.
felt like listening to one 41 minute long queen song
So this strangely sounded so much better through the headphones but I’m still not a fan. It’s too metal for me I guess. I think Freddie’s voice and persona definitely fit better with their later styles
Ikke så veldig spennende, meganerdy hardrock. Vokalen er selvsagt bra da. Kanskje litt strengt, men blir to stjerner Freddy boy
I didn't recognize any of the songs on this album, but I'm not a huge fan of Queen and this album didn't change nothing for me.
Not that many stand-out tracks on this, to be honest. Their later work really expanded on the ideas here and I prefer those albums much more.
I think I’m just a fan of their greatest hits because I found this album to be severely lacking. Plus it doesn’t even have one of their more famous songs. It’s ok, I guess. 2.5/5
That’s not it at all. Do less. Try less. Do it again. Nope, do less, pop down.
I wanted to like this one being Queen but I couldn't finish it. I ended up skipping to the Seven Seas of Rhye since it has the most plays, and still meh. I don't hate it, but I wouldn't listen again.
It is a universally accepted fact that I do not like the band Queen. Freddie Mercury’s vocals have never done a thing for me. I find their radio singles to be annoying generic musical-theatre style rock music and I think it’s boring. Unfortunately I have to admit that there’s parts of this particular record that I don’t hate. It’s significantly darker in tone than what I’ve grown to expect from the band. “The Loser in the End” stands out to me as actually surprisingly decent rock n roll song. Overall I enjoyed the first half of this record far more than the second half. Upon further reading I realized that side A was not written by Freddie Mercury, but side B was. Maybe it’s not that I don’t like Queen, but maybe Fred and I are just incompatible musically. Roger Taylor’s vocals are actually pretty enjoyable. Nothing groundbreaking, but maybe going into this album with a reasonably open mind has helped me learn something about myself, and my relationship with the band Queen. Side A: 3* Side B: 1* Averaging it out gives us my rating.
Never Loved Queen. Hate the vocal overdubs. Dislike Mays guitar tone. Means nothing to me.
I remember at Grinnell, there were a couple of DJs who really loved their debut album which came out that fall of 1973. I recall thinking it was ok, nothing special. When this came out the next year I was essentially gone from IA. I was excited to hear this since it had no songs/hits that I recognized. Well, it was pretty bad all around. Lame progressive rock, none of their later flair for melody or production.
Meh album from a meh band
From the sublime ... Slightly more interesting than packing boxes.
Nonsense.
Sometimes being full-on all the time makes full-on feel less full-on… if you know what I mean. This one was a bit too musical theatre-y for my liking too, and lacked anything that I would call essential Queen listening. Strange, considering it’s one of their most iconic album covers.
I know it’s Queen but I didn’t really enjoy this. It seemed kind of directionless. Forgettable album
Was alright; not a big Queen fan
Anna - made me realise Queen are less original than I thought although I think if Dan was told it was by pink Floyd he'd like it more Dan - I'd have to listen to it again without prejudice towards queen
Not my favourite but cool to see how this influenced Queen's later sound. Really like Nevermore, only wish it was longer. March of the Black Queen reminds me very much of Bohemian Rhapsody, and the transition into Funny How Love Is is nice.
I can tell why I've never heard any of these tracks before. Christ.
Meh
Eh, liked Night at the Opera better
Not a huge Queen person to be quite honest, and this album didn't really change me from my stance. Obviously Freddie is an incredible talent but everything else felt so indistinct. Listened to this album through twice and it was hard for me to determine where certain songs started or ended because they all sounded so similar and washed out. Brian May is just such an overrated guitarist in a band that truly shines as a singles band in my eyes.
Ugh. Queen. most overrated ever. 1.9
Not for me at all
I am a casual fan of Queen. This was alright. It was fun. It wasn’t exciting, or challenging, or experimental. Maybe I’m rating lower because I had higher expectations. Alas, this is my vote
Heavy Queen.
Dreadful and stupid. Genuinely grow up and grow a brain you relentless goons.
It's good to know that even Queen started out as an uninteresting, generic rock act. Gives hope to us all.
I think you need to be on something to fully enjoy this album 💊
I'm an admitted Queen hater, though I'm mostly familiar with the hits. Pleasantly surprised to almost enjoy a couple songs early on; Someday One Day and Loser In the End. But most of this is typical Queen and I think it's awful. Never understood why "metalheads" liked this corny operatic garbage.
Is there a band more overrated than Queen? Tight race with Billy Joel for biggest hacks out there. They heard original idea men David Bowie and Elton John and said, let's do that but way way worse and more annoying and then we can pretend we're artistic. It fucking sucks.
Struggled to get into this. Too much prog.
De 2e helft was een stuk beter maar jezus wat was het 1e deel kut. 2.5 sterren
I legitimately don’t know a single song on here which is baffling. This is some nerd shit. Like everyone involved deserves a swirly. Ogre Battle…c’mon guys. This album’s bad. There no song on here that’s memorable. Some songs found like bad Bowie deep cuts, some sound like the worst track on a mid prog album. It’s kind of baffling that this is on here. The next Queen album at least sound like the band the world would fall in love with. This is just bad. Which is a bummer considering what comes later.
Not really a queen fan
More interesting than I suspected, but when I get a whiff of their future descent into radiodom I recoil. May is a phenomenon, Taylor solid. I like the exploding of structure. When they're heavier, they're better.
Never a fan of Early Queen. Only appreciated them much later and only in small doses. I admire their ingenuity and theatricality!
This was my first time hearing this. It was a lot to process. Too much, honestly. Overall, it's an album of promise and potential, but it lacks their later brilliance. Not a bad listen. I'm sure if I gave it more spins, I would rate this higher. I'm just not willing to put in the effort.
Spinal Tap-esque
I like Queen, some of their singles are banging, but I’m not a big fan. Unfortunately, this album mostly magnifies things I do not like about them. Corny prog and metal guitar parts, dramatic opera like vocals, all without an actual decent hook or song… It is interesting to hear this period, to see how they were still developing and searching, but further than that, I’d never listen to this album again.
This isn't my favorite Queen album. It doesn't resonate much with me overall. It lacks cohesion.
Lehetett volna picit változatosabb.
Keep working on it fellas. I think you could do ok with some more practice.
Weirdly mid
Queen was always “a lot”. But this is waaaay too much. I felt like I should be tossing up “jazz hands” as this reminded me more of a rocking show choir performance than the band that would become iconic just a handful of years later.
This struck me as a little Zeppelin crossed with the muppets. I did dig in when it got heavy. Guitars excellent. But not a ton cohesive in here. Kinda disappointing despite the immense talent.
Not sure what this one is doing here? Nothing great about this one.
Was hoping to hear some of Queen classics with this album. Disappointing.
I just think that we could have chosen better Queen records.
I’m just not that into Queen’s earlier albums. Seven Seas of Rhye is probably my least favorite “hit” of theirs and it’s still the best thing on this record.
First listen Saved 4/11 Top track: Seven Seas of Rhye
Ihan on ok musiikkia, mutta ei itseä varten oikeastaan mikään tältä albumilta.
Never really liked Queen. And this album does nothing to change that opinion. Banal lyrics. Overwrought musicianship. Horrible production. Next….
Early Queen - more heavy, less pop. Not a record I’d choose to put on. The Loser in the End took me by surprise, Zeppelinesque vocals and breaks!
Oh, second Queen album in as many weeks. I was hugely into them around the time Freddie died, and have since taken a more nuanced view. They're one of the major singles bands to me but never really did it for me as an album band. And this album confirms that. Very much. There are sooooo many ideas in this, but they're not very focused. Sure, Bohemian Rhapsody a few years later also had tons of idea, but the song structure actually made some sense and was coherent. Whereas here there's a lot of "oh, let's just stick this chanting and screaming here, attach the weird guitar overdub to it, too, because, hey, props to Brian, we can't leave that out". The production is also weirdly muddy and overall it ends up not being a particularly coherent or great album.
Rollo.
Queen must be one of the bands that I am the most tired of hearing. First off, I am not that keen on their choir and glam-like sound. Second, they have been played so extremely much over the years that all of their hit songs have lost their charm since long. This record doesn't contain any of their most popular songs, which could have been an opportunity for me to enjoy another side of Queen without their hits. But I think I am just so burnt on it that I can't enjoy it. Or it's not that great. Probably deserves more, but a strong 2 for me.
Rollo.
It was ok, I like Queen but this just didn't grip me like other Queen albums have in the past.
I’m very glad they kept going after this. I just listened to it and already forgot what it sounded like.
I said for Sheer Heart Attack "I like Queen, but... Confession time.... I've been alive for 46 years nearly, and never actually listened to one of their albums. I grew up on the Greatest Hits albums, and some of those appear here, but the rest are just kinda meh?" and this can be echoed here. Hard to believe this is the same band as 80s Queen.
Queen II encapsulates the band's trademark flamboyance but often strays into over indulgence. Despite showcasing Queen's musical prowess, the album occasionally lacks the infectious energy of their later releases. The songs heavily rely on Freddie Mercury's vocals, leaving a noticeable void when he isn't in the spotlight. Queen II serves as a transitional record for the band, laying the groundwork for their future successes but falling short of fully realising their potential. While not their most accessible effort, it still offers glimpses of the innovative artistry that would define Queen's legacy. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Seven Seas of Rhye
Rollo.
As much as I respect Queen and as good as Freddie was as a front man, I dont really like them, a few songs here and there but none are on this record
Not my fave Queen release.
Had high expectations for this one. A bombastic sound but everything seemed one note
Pretty sure this is the first repeat artist that I actually listened to. And much like Opera, this wasn't super enticing. It unfortunately doesn't have a Bohemian Rhapsody to bring itself up so.
I can't stand musical theatre
Reminder that the following albums are not on this list: - Donuts - The Idler Wheel / When the Pawn - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Blonde - Stop Making Sense - ANTI - De La Soul Is Dead - The Infamous - Lemonade - Diana - Currents - Sketches of Spain - Reasonable Doubt / The Black Album - New Day Rising - Discovery - Pretty Hate Machine - Ram - Black Messiah - Dictionary of Soul - Aquemini - Baduizm - Just As I Am - Criminal Minded - One in a Million - Ege Bamyasi - Post - Fucking MADVILLAINY
I actually hated this a lot less than A Night At The Opera.
I sadly just thought this was really bland
Can theatrical rock harmonies become too much, yes
Never dug Queen. This album didn't help.
I've never been a Queen fan and arena-glam is definitely not my thing. I was pleasantly surprised by this album at first; it starts with some decent understated tunes. Kinda dark and jammy and proggy in places. By track six however we're firmly planted in 70s boomer-bait and bombast. Blech.
Father To Son // The Loser In The End //
Hadn't heard this before. Wasn't into it but maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it because I like other Queen music.
Queen is good but more and more I hear Queen they just aren’t for me. They are talented and I understand why people enjoy them. Not me though.
What a racket. I quite liked Some Day One Day though
Kinda boring, forgettable
Very glam rocky. Not my cup of tea.
Queen - Queen II I was always familiar with the cover for this album, but upon listening to it this morning, I realized I had never listened to this album. And I didn't really like it. It feels a bit over the top and I don't find any songs on it to be memorable. I see how this album gets us to their more famous ones, but something about this one just doesn't resonate with me. 2/5
March of the black queen was the only proper highlight
I don't like Queen
Nothing special - I liked the prog elements but felt like the mixing was kind of messy, and the songs blended together in my head. Nothing really stood out to me except for Seven Seas of Rhye.
Meh
"While the album remains one of the band's lesser-known works, it has since retained a cult following and has in recent years been cited by a number of music publications, fellow artists and fans as one of Queen's finest works." Hier staat dus "snobkeuze" in hoofdletters geschreven. Ok, here we go.
Not the Queen I remember.
I dont like Queen
Queen playing prog is not the Queen most people think of. I found this pretty boring and dated.
Not worthy of this list. A little prog, a little glam and the songs aren’t here just yet.
So very operatic for a rock album. I really appreciate what they’re doing here but it is not at all for me.
It was Queen sound. Probably wouldn't listen again.
I like queen but I didn't resonate with this album. I thought the instrumental and singing was good like the vocal performance had attitude in a good way, but I just couldn't really get into any songs. This was not the kind of music I really listen to. I wasn't the biggest fan of this album.
Alltof mikið prog. Queen enn að finna sinn hljóm. Gera það í síðasta laginu sem er langbest.
The best songs on this record are the slower, low key songs. I just cannot stand the operatic qualities of Queen's music.
Overrated cringe
Singles band - bang average album
Not a huge queen fan and this is not one of their better albums.
I think Freddie was one of the great front men. I just didn't get Queen.
nothing special favorite tracks: funny how love is
It was just okay. A little boring.
It's Queen but it's boring prog rock about fantasy crap. I'm a huge nerd but I don't get it. So you read Lord of the Rings. I feel like Led Zeppelin put out some stuff like this too in this era. Whatever, it's not for me.
I like Queen's big hits but that's about it. Deep cuts like this album are tedious.
I like a lot of Queen but yeah, didn't do it for me.
thought i would like it more, not much was memorable
Muy sin más la primera parte no tiene nada que ver con el resto de discografía. La canción the loser in the end es estilo AC/DC está bien. A partir de la cara negra se nota que las canciones son compuestas por freddie y suena más al rock musical al que nos tiene acostumbrados.
Entertaining but didn’t really know these songs.
This album is good example of how hard it is to make popular music. Obviously it’s Queen, but wasn’t catchy to me. But not really a big fan of Queen.
Not my favorite. Some songs were too timid. There were a couple I liked but I doubt I'd listen to this again.
Not really for me
Bona composició, poques grans cançons
Angenehmes geduddel, aber nix spannendes
Queen mag ich nicht
Das ist mir alles zu schrill, zu eckig, zu pompöös (sic), bis auf \"Some day one day\", da tritt die Kreischgitarre nur kurz in unangenehme Erscheinung
Strange concept album. Was not aware of its existence. Songs were fine, but nothing was noteworthy. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
Not for me.
Just can't get into Queen- but recognise the worthiness!
Rollo.
I can see how this would have been a revelation at the time but now just seems super forgettable and I would be fine never listening to any of these songs again as long as I shall live. It's not bad but just not what I like to listen to. Maybe it would be better in a live setting since it feels very arena rockish
I've watched 4 Shrek movies and that's NOT what an ogre battle would sound like smh . Hoping we get a little less Queen and a little more Ween
Perfectly okay album. Not bad, but nothing really stuck out to me. Father To Son was probably my favorite.
Rollo.
not that kind of magic, for me
Wow, Queen really are the kind of band where you're far better off listening to the greatest hits, aren't they? It's basically a glam rock concept album based around D&D, and is exactly as nauseating as you'd expect something like that to be. Feels like Queen songs are very hit or miss, and this is very much a collection of misses (Seven Seas Of Rhye being the best of a really mediocre bunch). 2/5.
"Come tonight, come to the ogre site, come see the ogre battle fight." Seriously? I've never understood the adoration of this cheesy Euro-rock arena band. I guess if you don't speak English, "No time for losers, Cause we are the champions--of the world!" feels like a killer sing-along, but anglos have no excuse for celebrating this motley crew of bad English hair and teeth. (Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody is awesome, but that's it.) Case in point, this album's corniness is all that distinguishes it from the sea of 70s Camaro rock we've all moved past. I'll take Tenacious D's loving parodies of these bland odes to pipers, queens, and fairies anyday. Shame on you, 1001 Albums writers!
Nice concept album. Did not recognize any song. Lol
Queen II: Judgement Day
Ah, one of those albums from before they found the magical recipe. Nothing memorable, but I did like some of the songs. Torn between 2 big stars or 3 small stars.
This doesn't sound like the queen you get on all the compilations. Sounds like a band finding their voice. Boring, nothing really grabbed me
A really solid album. Easy to listen to, and work to. It lacks many of 'the hits' and, as a moderate fan of Queen who has a significant appreciation for their musicianship, and individual virtuosity (Freedy and Bryan are perhaps the best in their discipline), I was slightly underwhelmed with this - whislt still appreciative of how high qulity the music is. I prefer the high-energy music they produce, and this is a more complex, deep and laid back dynamic.
A definite different kind of rock than I am used to with Queen. There is some really great guitar work and arrangement on these songs. I do prefer the more pop rock sound of later Queen. It is interesting to see where they come from! I did not dislike the sound of this album, but it continually got more and more operatic and strange. I would have rated the first half of the album higher than the second half. Upon research, Mercury wrote all of the B-side of this album while May wrote almost all of the A. I definitely prefer the A-side. I'd lean high 2, probably 2.5 if possible.
Had never listened to this before and was really looking forward to it. I think for me the magic of Queen is the pairing of complex prog rock arrangements with a pop hook. I don’t think they have the balance right on this album.
Decidedly meh album. Can really hear Brian and Freddies uniqueness which gives it the queen "sound" but the songs kind of stink. Seven seas of rhye is a good song, but the only one on the album that is memorable. The album art is classic. One good song = one star. I'll bump it up to two stars for album art and musicality.
Some great crunchy guitar early and gorgeous vocals and production. But forgettable and repetitive songs with dumb lyrics.
Not their best, but Queen holds a special place in my heart. 3 Actually. This is not something I'd like to hear again. 2
I remember when I was younger I used to tell people Seven Seas of Rye was the fastest song on record. Do with that what you will. Ultimately prefer their later stuff. This seems like it could be coming from any band around in 1974.
Too melodic
Best Songs: Loser in the End, March of the Black Queen
I'm just not buying it - overblown
Guess I'm just not the biggest queen fan. Don't have a whole lot to say about it. 2.2
Under delivery
I really liked White Queen but not much everything else.
I dont like queen, never have, and this was not the start of me changing my opinions on his music not actively annoying though, decent music that was meh for me
sobrecargado, sobrevaluado y pomposo. más ambición que habilidad. más efectos de guitarra que música.
They sound nice but I can’t say there’s much material I come back to on this. It’s funny that it’s a self-titled album, because what Queen became is not really present on here.
It all starts off quite nicely as a showcase for Freddie's vocals but descends into fantasy prog and that won't do.
snooze fest. honk shoo honk shoo. at least it isn’t unlistenable, just not anything worthy of interest. would probably find it interesting if i was 45 years old. fav song: the loser in the end
I don't usually like Queen -- all a bit overwrought and melodramatic for my tastes. Liked this better than the other things of theirs I've heard but still not something I'm likely to come back to. 2.5 stars
Nooit helemaal begrepen.
If this had been their first album, no one would be dressing up as Freddy Mercury for Halloween, I promise you that.
Weird to not know one of these tracks, but I know why
I love queen but this not their best album. If you like queen you’ll like it though, just doesn’t have any of the hits.
It is too musically? Extra? Too much I am not into it
almost like what i think of as 'queen' but adjacent...and from a distance?
I generally don't like Queen. I checked out the song list for this album and did not recognize anything, so figured I ought to at least give it a chance. Listening to Father To Son, I was like... Oh shit, Freddie's voice isn't bugging me. Oh shit, Queen was actually a real rock band at one point. The album however descended back to the Queen I was familiar with. It wasn't so bad though. Hearing this album and it's relative ok-ness to me, I searched for the moment Queen lost me. Nothing familiar on the first album and I recently listened to Sheer Heart Attack for the first time a couple of months ago and it was pretty ok in my book. So I'm certain it Was A Night At The Opera that killed this band for me.
queens albums always suck everythings good except the material
Way worse than expected lol
Meh. Don't bore us, get to the chorus.
A fine listen. Totally respect the influence and greatness of the band and especially Mercury's talent, but just not much for my listening pleasure. Would definitely listen if on the radio or background, but I wouldn't purchase much of any for myself
I am surprised they let them have a third album. This did absolutely nothing for me.
Don't know why I love Queen 1 and Sheer Heart Attack and rate them with 5 stars but can't really appreciate this one m this one is just 2 stars for me.
Ok gentlemen, been way under the weather for a week and music hasn't been a priority, but I'm ready to get caught up. Welcome back, Will! So we got Queen. I do love Freddie's voice. I do love many of their songs. But, it's either love or just didn't like with not much in the middle for me. This album, here, just didn't do it for me. I mean I really liked The Loser in the End, but not much other than that... Luke has convinced me this is an underrated album, but I did listen a couple times and it did not get there for me. I haven't toked/Mario in awhile so when my chest feels better, maybe I'll revisit after a few, but in the meantime, my rating not very good for this album and it hurts to write. I'm giving a 2.5. But that's probably generous due to thinking of all the songs I do love. 2
I'm not a Queen fan - never have been. This album is so different from their later work - in particular the guitar is excellent, but it falls short of other prog rock artists and albums of the same era. Too many non-descript songs. Despite "finding" their sound over the next few years, I would probably still prefer their earlier work.
Don't know why, by Queen just don't do it for me. It's not bad but just not something I really want to listen to. No hits here either. Tbh I didn't really listen to this properly and give it a proper chance
I’ll admit I’ve never given Queen a real try, but I’ve never heard a song of theirs and thought, “I want more of this.” So, an album was too much. No desire to hear this again.
I once went on a sporting road, 10 hours driving in a minivan during the golden age of tape decks. Team mates insisted on Queen's Greatest Hits on repeat for the journey rather than my collection of well crafted indie and alternative hits. Fuck you Queen, and fuck you Clive.
Never a big fan of Queen. Decent ok album, but not more than that
Exuberance or excess? I guess it depends on the mood of the listener. This was Queen developing their trademark sound, but it’s no accident that people don’t sing the songs from this album.
This was the first Queen LP I bought (courtesy of the Australian Record Club) in early 1975. It did not grab me. The following year I bought A Night At The Opera, & the rest is history. That album was full of poppy singles, tunes you could hum and Bohemian Rhapsody, which my housemate/fellow teacher & I would sing at the top of our voices every morning, as we drove the expressway from Lurnea to Campbelltown. I have to say I’ve rarely played Queen II since then. Having just given it a few spins, I don’t think my opinion has changed. But it is fascinating to hear so much in the sound that indicates where they were heading - May’s guitar sound particularly. There are just no killer tunes on it.
Queen. I love Queen they are awesome. Way, way, way over the top, because nothing exceeds like excess. This is my mate David Lewis' favourite Queen album, and that is saying a lot. See his Queen summary here: https://www.toppermost.co.uk/queen/ This record is where they worked out how to use the studio to get their trademark sounds; layers of harmony vocals, orchestras of overdubbed guitars, weird sounds and tape effects, all more more more. They really perfected the techniques that built the sound they used to conquer the world through the 70s on this record. But, the songs just aren't really there. Sorry, Dave. I have listened to this through about four times in a row today (ad I know I have listened to it several times before. I own a copy). But I just can't remember any of the songs. There are a few good riffs that come and go quickly, but everything is so overdone, and overblown, I'm just overpowered. I much prefer the (slightly) more stripped down hard-rockin' Sheer Heart Attach, or, conversely, the even more over the top A Night At The Opera, which has far far better songs, and a bit more light and shade. Fun fact: the working title of Queen II was "Over The Top". I love this review from Pitchfork (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15221-reissues/), which encapsulates my feelings about the band: "Fucking Queen. For all their reported bombast, pomp, and tendency to overshoot and double-slaughter any semblances of good taste, everything you've heard about them is still true. They're one of the few phenomena who deliver on the hype, regardless of how you approach them. Hate or love proggy album suites? Doesn't matter, Queen will make you feel good about your choice. Can't stand operatic drama, or can't get enough unitard-clad frontmen? Love to hate prime 1970s hard rock with arena sheen? Welcome to the greatest/most horrible band of the 20th century. They did and wanted it all. Yet, so much of Queen's music is still under-recognized even by people who know and love the hits." Robert Christgau (http://www.robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=queen) was a bit more succinct: "Queen II [Elektra, 1974] Wimpoid royaloid heavoid android void. C-" On this record, they are working it out, how to do The Sound. It took a while to learn how to simplify their songwriting (mostly) and how to apply The Sound to best effect. Great moments, but tedious hours.
Thematic. Samey. Didn't really grab me.
Er... No, thank you. I respect Queen's hardcore fans and their obsessions for their early, more proggy albums. But honestly, not much stands out in the tracklisting of *Queen II*. It's a lot of technical prowess (the harmony of background vocals, those guitar solos...), but *all* songs quickly end up sounding samey. It's like a pointless puzzle where all those elements are assembled in different ways ad nauseam, bringing no discernible dynamics to the whole thing. "Father to Son" has some nice moments. But everything after is quite a borefest, in spit of all the effort put into it. If really I had to include a Queen record in my list, *A Night At The Opera" would be the most likely candidate. There you have those catchy tunes (in a vast array of different styles), along with interesting 180-degrees turns in it. And *maybe* i would add *News Of The World* for its timeless hits, or *Jazz* and its similar stylistic endeavors. But that's about it. Number of albums left to review: 673 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 160 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 75 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 92 (including this one)
Nice to hear the origins of Queen but I’m glad they’ve done more 😂
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not, really. Iconic band and sound so get a free pass but just not that interesting and engaging to me Favourite song: Track 9 - The March Of The Black Queen
Queen is certainly not my thing. I just can't listen to it, it's not relaxing, not exciting, just annoying. I don't get the hang of it.
Just give me the hits, please. Of course May’s guitar and the harmonies, but the songwriting is terrible.
Honestly have never heard any of the songs on this album. Probably why I didn't enjoy it as much had it been some more classic bangers. However, I didn't hate it.
A surprisingly bad Queen album. Why this and not their first, Sheer Heart Attack, or A Night at the Opera?
Interesting that there is a beta version of bohemian rhapsody on this album. But not my cup of tea.
I’ve rated this higher than I expected for a couple of interesting tracks towards the latter part of the album, the lead guitar is preventing this ever going beyond a 2 though
Said in the style of The Simpson's Comic Book Guy: "Most. Overrated. Band. Ever!"
It was like listening to an alternate universe where Queen had all their musical and production skills but none of their song-writing talent.
It’s not bad, but it’s not good. It’s rock music designed by civil engineers for people who think ordering a rogan josh is edgy.
