Reviews (page 11 of 14)

It only gets this high a rating because I could listen to the last four tracks forever. The rest of it is completely ignorable. I think if someone else made this, some rando instead of Bowie, it doesn’t get listed here.

enjoyable Bowie. Does he really have a bad album? "Sound and Vision" remains one my favorite Bowie songs

First half of the album was decent. Second half got a little weird

I've always liked Bowie the person more than his music, something about his Art pop just doesn't land with me all the time. This album is definitely in that same camp. Some fun songs, but its all very experimental and not cohesive for me. It feels like he made it for himself rather than his audience, which is fine but I didn't love it.

was not bad

Day20 - it’s a fine bowie album and if i keep listening im sure it will grown on me

I don't know any of Bowie's albums, only his hits. I really like Sound and Vision so I thought I'd enjoy this album more than I did, though I do also like Always Crashing so maybe I need to give it a few listens.

I wonder what he drew on the carpet. Haven't I had sound and vision on a different album already? Like an 80s soundtrack. Ahead of it's time then I guess. Can appreciate potential for influencing.

Enjoyable but other than the hits i didnt feel much

I would listen to album again when I want something different.

Starts of strong with some good riffs and melodies but then strays into a spacey instrumental focus in the second half of the album that I wasn't a big fan of.

Da muss ich nochmal genauer hinhören

Fascinating! I've never delved into Bowie too deeply, but I always wanted to. I'm glad I'm doing this 1001 thing for reasons like this. The chameleon of the music world reinvents himself as a Krautrocker, you can hear the German influences throughout this, as well as very 'Eno' ambient and experimental production. When they said they were hesitant to release this due to its potential uncommerciality, I get it - that is what makes this very good from my perspective, an established star who wants to do his own thing is always a good sign. It will certainly be getting another listen soon. A 'low' 3.

I wasn’t sure about this one in the first half. It was the instrumental tracks at the end that saved it for me.

Good album but nothing I would go out of my way to listen to.

It was OK

Bleak af

A different take by Bowie for his eleventh studio album. There are not too many stand outs, but it is a very different sound more haunting and influenced by Bowie's heavy drug use and German inspired krautrock blending electronic elements with rock and avant-garde themes. Best: Sound and Vision Worst: Art Decade

Quirky. Lots of experimental sounds on a rock foundation. Sound and Vision instrumental is niiiice. The latter half could be a Zelda soundtrack. I like the record but don’t know a playlist I would add them to. Enjoying the back half the most. This sounds like it could be the starting point for many bands and genres; this is the oldest album I’ve heard these sounds in. I’d wager this album was a major influence in the entire 80’s sound. Had a very specific aesthetic to it. I anticipate this will get better with each listen. Subterraneans is incredible.

Very trippy, bad transitions in the songs. Experimental sound, feels like a concept album.

Started very fun, but fell off at the end

Really Bowie ;-)

Not my favorite

It’s ok.

3.5/5 - cant really tell how I feel about this

Good album, a weird shift after the sound of Bowie's previous albums and I'm still trying to decide whether I prefer it. High 3.

Raten we kwaliteit, historische waarde of smaak?

david bowie is certainly a pioneer when it comes to his gritty and sometimes spacey rock tracks, and i definitely think he's up there with one of the greats. however as innovative and as probably influential this album is, it's not as good as i thought it would be. the first tracks had a promising start with more of the rock flavorings, but the second half of otherworldly ambience is... i mean i suppose it's nice, but really it's nothing too worth of note i feel like. and it's a real shame.

I did not really enjoy it

Can definitely hear the Eno influences. Fine as background music, but nowhere near the level of classic Bowie and I don't see me going out of my way to listen to it.

53/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Not my favourite Bowie album by a long shot, but better than I thought it would be when I saw that it was a collaboration with Brian Eno.

David is one of my all time favourite artists but there is too many non-songs on this album for me to actually enjoy it. I love sound and vision, but that’s is.

Good talent but not my favourite from Bowie.

Amazing album from an amazing year in total. However, this is still not Bowies best album of the many that rank.

"Low" represents a shift in David Bowie's life and musicality. Away from drugs, this album presents itself as a reinvention of the man and his music. Since listening on Spotify deprives the listener of the differences between Side A and Side B, it should be noted that the later half of the album is mostly instrumental and a far departure from the previous albums. This album relies heavily on electronics.

Liked it more than I presumed considering its moody, avant-garde aesthetic. Nice blend of the synthetic, technical vibe of a Kraftwerk combined with the sonically manipulated humanity of Bowie. Need more than a casual listen. Feel like this project being a daily review flows to fast for such an album which needs digging into if it’s not a familiar genre. But enjoyed it enough that it’s worth coming back to.

Pretty decent, but I can’t really say I’ll ever listen to it again.

Ok album with one great song

Some songs I like others just not my type.

Nelabai uzhookino

Not my favourite Bowie album, it's a radical departure from his early stuff and very different still from his later albums you can tell that his life has gone through some change because of the change in the start of music. It's not a bad album just not one of his better ones

so this was quite interesting, some really nice instrumental stuff on here and it was quite cool and i can imagine a lot of it has been sampled before, but i didn’t love it, i could just mostly tolerate it. thank goodness it wasn’t 2 hrs like smashing pumpkins man.

David Bowie, muss man mögen, nicht jede Zeit die Stimmung dafür da.

Noen av disse sangene digger jeg, og mye blir litt for rart og umelodiøst

Key track: Sound and Vision ❤️

The second half of this thing caught me by surprise. It sounds almost exactly like a Popol Vuh record. Definitely not Bowies best work but he's exploring sone really interesting synthy sounds here. Pretty damn bold to go for full instrumentals on the second half

Woah this was cool, super synthy and more experimental than I was expecting. Good vibes overall and I loved the deep sax on Sound and Vision

Start of Bowie's Berlin period, the first "side" of arty krautrock synthesiser inspired jams flys by, aided by timely fade ins and outs, and contains the excellent "Sound and Vision" which sounds like it could go on for far longer than its posted 3:03. Try and listen and no have the do-do-do-do-dooos in your head for days. Side two slows down more than a little with the bleak as fuck "Warszawa" and the rest is ambient instrumental music. Truly a tale of two albums smashed together, but it works, mostly. Less than a year later he'd release "Heroes", madness.

David Bowie cool, a little too much of a need to express something specific for my taste with this album atm

I love David Bowie so mich that I chose him as a most admireble person in the world for the presentation about in the English class. I liked this album but the other albums are much better I think.

It's pretty nice, enjoyable enough. A bit too instrumental for my taste. Would need to listen to it again to form a clearer opinion.

A pretty good listen.

Initielt lidt rodet for min smag, men sidste 4 numre var god elektronik.

Rockin riffs, space synths, and his dynamic voice that is cool yet haunting yet inviting all at once. I think the first half went by quickly and I enjoyed it a lot, and then the second half had to try harder to grab me. I also felt like the first half songs were just too short. I would just get to feeling out a track and then it would be gone. Half of the first half tracks were under 3 minutes. Overall I liked the record. It's not my favorite of his and I get this feeling that this album is like him sitting down in a studio for a week and saying "screw it let's see what comes out.", and writing and recording everything there. His sound is so good that it works but there's something missing in the songs.

definitely need to listen more

He is an artist

Needed more Labyrinth songs. :) I was surprised by the lack of vocals for this album, and feel like I understand another layer of Bowie.

-omg more david bowie!!!!!! -like that the album starts with just an instrumental track -david bowie has such a cool iconic voice -im liking the funky rock moment happening here -idk not a lot of singing going on -just a lot of instrumentals and different sounds -feels like a very average david bowie album to me personally

This was quite interesting as it didn't feel like a Bowie album. Maybe too non-quirky and/or more electronic elements than I'm used to in Bowie's music. Still, I enjoyed it, refreshing! Shows that Bowie is quite the musician with many different sides to him. I instantly liked 'Sound and Vision' when it came on, but other than that not much really stuck. There were some nice melodic pieces in the latter part of the album like 'Art Decade' and 'Weeping Wall', but somehow don't feel like it deserves more than a quite strong 3 star rating, still.

Felt like a typical 80s album until i realised it was released in 1977 which is impressive. A few standout tracks "Speed of Life", "Breaking Glass" and "Sound and Vision". Other than that it wasn't really a sound I assosiated with Bowie. A nice album!

Incredibly mid. Don't get why people say this is Bowie's best album. The second side somewhat redeems the first one. That's why it's got three stars from me

Listened to this one a few times today. Not the biggest Bowie fan but I wanted to give this a fair shot. I can definitely see the appeal to the original intended audience. Must have been so different than what people were used to hearing. First few tracks were immediately catchy, the latter part of the album took a little longer to appreciate. Still not sure I'm there yet, but I'll certainly give this another listen from time to time. Albums are great.

Only Bowie could fittingly compare himself to the devastation and brokenness of post-war Europe without uttering a single word.

speed of life. cool eclectic instrumental. sweet baseline, spacy synth intermixed. breaking glass. nice baseline again, modern guitar comparison would be jack white maybe. what in the world. odd. dissonant. not sure, definitely not very enjoyable. sound and vision. always crashing in the same car. be my wife. a new career in a new town. warszawa. weird and interesting art decade. weeping wall. subterraneans. not impressed honestly.

What in the world is too busy of a song for my taste. 1st track was repetitive and all band. This album has the Bowie flair and musicality but lacks the vocal sound. The ambient sound is what makes this skippable for me it is just not my cup of tea.

First time Bowie. Not sure I understood it all. But some enjoyable tracks. Deserves more listens surely.

One if his better ones

This album felt like an ethereal intro to something a thousand times more epic.

Mostly instrumental but smooth and interesting. Works well as background music in the best way possible. Super Dune feelings.

This album is weird af.

Simpatico, ma non così interessante. Non dico noioso, ma quasi.

Deep cut david bowie. Perhaps deep cut for a reason

It was not very engaging to listen. First part of the album is ok but there is not much happening after 7 track. There is nothing wrong with it. It is just too minimalistic for me.

I’m not the biggest Bowie fan, but I liked the production on this record. Lots of cool experimental synth stuff I can get down with. Bowie and Eno is a good combo

Bowie has always been more misses than hits for me. First half is stronger and some of the bass lines are awesome though. Stand out tracks - Breaking Glass Sound and vision

Sounded ahead of the curve for it's time, outdated by the mid 80's, then like it could have been released in 2016. Too unengaging instrumental in the second half. Best Song(s): Sound and Vision Further Listening: Yes

New Job in a New Town best track. Overall a moody and interesting album

Interesting sound-scapes with good compositions. Lyrics and vocals don't contribute as much.

This was a wild ride. Great music. Different than expected. First half was much better. Great first album.

Interesting album. Quite eclectic. I enjoyed it overall.

Bowie’s experimental sound shining through in this album. Not as refined or iconic as previous albums, but still interesting enough to catch my attention with some tracks. The stand out track for me - Sound and Vision; an absolute classic. Reminds me of my childhood with my dad playing this song every now and then. Overall, this album is a nice step along Bowie’s legendary career, but ultimately falters in the face of some of his more recognised work.

david booie should have died at the alamo.

Meh. It was fine. More instrumentals than I thought.

Bowie is good. This is not my favorite of his.

Excellent in places... and just OK in others. Didn't really string together as a full album for me.

Good background music

An original album by Bowie who releases something in more of an ambient music style. Not my favourite album by Bowie, but a nice background sound while working or doing something else.

70s | Pop/Rck | Overall score: 3.27 / 65.45% 01. Speed of Life - 4/5 02. Breaking Glass - 3.5/5 03. What in the World - 3/5 04. Sound and Vision - 4/5 05. Always Crashing in the Same Car - 3/5 06. Be My Wife - 4/5 07. A New Career in a New Town - 3/5 08. Warszawa - 3/5 09. Art Decade - 2.5/5 10. Weeping Wall - 2.5/5 11. Subterraneans - 3.5/5 Overall coment cause i'm too lazy to reply every song: not a bowie fan

Fave: Be my wife Overall boa guitarra mas não fiquei muito fã de Bowie, uma ou outra it's ok

It was ok!

Nothing incredible maybe I didn’t listen well enough but I will try from now on

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it’s not of my favourites from Bowie but he still shiners bright on everything he touched Favourite song: Track 4 - Sound and Vision

By the late seventies Bowie had passed his peak, but I do think Low is a step up from Station to Station. The album holds a nice mix of songs dominated by either vocals or instrumentals, and I prefer the latter in this case. “Sound and Vision” is the only song from the album I’d heard of before this listen, and while it makes sense as the centerpiece, it’s no Bowie classic. “What in the World” feels awkward and forced, and the album would be better off without it. The supernatural theme shines through in “Weeping Wall,” which might just feature a by-now expected contribution from our extraterrestrial visitors. The saxophone in “Subterraneans” sounds like a poor man’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” but it’s a fitting way to end the record. I can appreciate what Bowie is going for in the concept album here, but since I can’t see myself ever going out of my way to listen to it, I can’t give him more than three stars.

OK no big hits, not much Singing. Pretty chill

Musically very good, felt more like a soundtrack at times. Not very memorable and not really any stand out tracks.

It was ok

This album is good but not great. There are a few songs that have really funky grooves and really get down. But there are also a few tracks that are overfilled with ambient noise and seem to lack purpose. Overall it is still a good album but not one of Bowie’s best. -Klep

nothing is standing out yet 2nd half of album is weird and better than first half more synthy tracks 8-11 very good!!

not my favorite, kinda boring and i usually love bowie. the second half was enjoyable but didn't stand out and the first half i didn't like too much. could potentially give another listen or two to see if it grows though Rating - 5.4 Favs - Speed Of Life - Warszawa - Sound And Vision

Sound & Vision - yay! Liked maybe one or two others, a chunk of it was instrumental though and I like Bowie’s voice of course, so I didn't find those as compelling.

It's probably rated higher than necessary since it's Bowie. This is pretty tame.

Genres: Art rock, avant-pop, electronic, ambient, experimental rock Formed: 1963 (success 1969) Run time: 11 songs, 38 min, 51 sec The eleventh studio album by the English musician David Bowie. Bowie is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Unusually, the first track “Speed of Life” is an instrumental. Spotify: Least popular song: 3.3M Most popular song: >70M plays. Track 2, “Breaking Glass” is supposedly an exploration of the signals of his collapse during the period he was working on the album. It is not even two minutes long and has less than a dozen lines of lyrics. I’m sure the reference to breaking glass is a metaphor for something. The song is rubbish, the lyrics are protracted and don’t really amount to much. There is no way someone could extract any meaning from it, unless it was explained to them first. Track 3, “What in the World” is about wanting to make a connection to an introverted girl who seem too afraid to leave. It is a much better song than the previous one,, but it still only amounts to an album (filler) track. Track 4, “Sound And Vision” is by far the best track on the album. It is Bowie at his best. It describes the power of music (the sound and the visuals) and the effect on the human psyche. The up-beat nature of this song is at odds with the downbeat tone of the rest of the album. Track 5, “Always Crashing in the Same Car” suggests making the same mistake over and over. Track 6, “Be My Wife” is a plea for companionship to ease the loneliness of living a transitory life. I assume it is autobiographical. Track 7, “A New Career in a New Town” is an instrumental. Track 8, “Warszawa” is to all intent and purpose an instrumental with some nonsense words and sounds added for effect. The general feel is contemplative and sombre. Warszawa is the former name of Warsaw, a city in Poland that has experienced upheaval and trauma throughout history. Given the name of the song, it has been suggested that this song reflects that history. The link makes sense, but history has ups and downs and this instrumental remains sombre throughout. Track 9, “Art Decade” is another instrumental. Track 10, “Weeping Wall” is another instrumental that starts off tranquil but the last 30 seconds sound a bit despondent. I suppose that is how weeping leaves you feeling. Without lyrics that is clever. Track 11, “Subterraneans” is for the most part a melodic instrumental. It has seven lines of lyrics, sung very softly. The line “Share bright failing star” would suggest some sort of descent from the very top to the depths. The feeling is of growing melancholia and despair. However good the instrumentals are on this album, I can’t help but feel Bowie has “phoned it in”. He’s a singer/songwriter - I expect more lyrics that this album delivers. I think if he’d wanted to release a whole album of instrumentals that would have been fine. One or the other. “Sound And Vision” should have been released as a single and not have been part of this album. It does not fit with the “Low” mood of the other tracks. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***

Favourite song: Always Crashing in the Same Car

Excellent start to the album. Speed of life, Breaking glass, Sound and Vision, Always crashing in the same car. The second half is a very different vibe and was not as enjoyable of a listen. Perhaps depends on the environment you're listening to it in. Will revisit once travel to Mars is commercialised.

Bowie gonna Bowie. I don’t love this album apart from “Sound and Vision” and “Speed of Life”. The rest is very introspective and Instrumental. But I keep listening because even rambling, experimental Bowie is still interesting. I think the final track, “Subterraneans”, is a beautiful mood piece.

not my favourite bowie album so I give it a 3 but Bren the music connoisseur gives it a 5 so.. who knows. Definitely more art rock/avant compared to the other bowie albums I've listened to. Worth another listen

Very artistic, though not a sound that I prefer.

This wasn't bad but I expected more from a Davie Bowie album. I prefer his proggy side and this was a little too chill for me

The first half was solid, Speed of Life, Sound and Vision, Be My Wife are all excellent. I like the psychedelia tones of this but the second half just sounds a bit too much like an 80’s sci-fi movie soundtrack. 3 stars

David Bowie continues to make a very advanced case for being one of the most overrated artists ever holy moly. He's on this list idk how many times, yet I haven't heard anything that would suggest him being here. What does he exactly do on this album? Repetitive instrumentals into mumbling some random words into repetitive instrumentals (those instrumentals are sometimes great btw, don't get me wrong) But what am I missing? Why is he such a household name? Still no fucking idea and I already heard like 4 Bowie-albums. The fact that if you listen to this with ignoring who the artist is, it's a mediocre album.

Erfreulich wenig Gesang. Ganz nett, das rumprobiere mit den Synthies. Gerade so drei Sterne. Zu viele Platten von Bowie im übrigen.

Sound and vision is vibey 🎧 Songs don't always feel that different from each other but generally speaking they're still nice to listen to.

1. speed of life - i cant tell if the first song in the album is supposed to have lyrics or not but it sounds pretty sick ngl 2. breaking glass - this shi pretty chilll!! ive never really listened to david bowie but this is a good intro to his stuff :) song has such silly lyrics too! 3. what in the world - some of the lyrics r relatable like ' so deep in your room, you never leave your room' but this song is tooo happy sounding for something so sad sounding yknow 4. sound and vision - hm it's alright i suppose 5. always crashing in the same car - a little spunky if i do say so myself; lowkey vibe w this 6. be my wife - the lyrics r romantic but i dont think this is for me 7. a new career in a new town - hes also funkyish 8. warszawa - stranger things vibes LOL 9. art decade - may be the best song on the entire album. super atmospheric it's so lovely aghhhh 10. weeping wall - i forgot what i thought of this but the title of the song is awesome 11. subterraneans - this shit is amaing. ethereal.

Meh it's Ok, kinda weird with the Brian Eno influence. Apparently it's music to stop taking drugs too

Good, mostly instrumental 3.5

Another bowie album. I guess we may as well get them all eh...

2nd listen. I like the sound of this album but was never drawn to any song In particular.

There is no bad Bowie, but there is better Bowie than other Bowie. This one is okay. Surprising number of instrumentals.

Third Bowie record since the list began! Not that I'm complaining. Low was my first REAL intro to Bowie after hearing it in a record store one day in my early 20s. I think it was Sound and Vision? Anyway, after that I decided I'd wasted enough time not listening to his music. But while it worked as a gateway record for me, I wouldn't necessarily mark this as a great into to the wide world of Ziggy. He relies a lot more on the instrumentation throughout this album, which was definitely transitioning into the more 80s sounding, experimental material. The second half of this one gets weird and spacey (par for the course on the Berlin Trilogy albums). A lot of synths are introduced that really change the tone in an almost jarring way. But hey, I do that with my own music, so again, not complaining. I think overall, Low is compelling but maybe would've worked better as a longer EP, or just had some of the fat trimmed off.

Cool sound, an unconventional album, very interesting listen, cool mix of different genres strengthened by Bowies voice. 7/10

Not as great as some of his other albums that I have assumed are in the 1001 but still a worthwhile listen

If it weren’t for Breaking Glass and Sound and Vision, this could very well have just been the backing track to a movie. You can hear the Brian Eno ambient influence. At the top of Tottenham Court Road, they have built a white square with images projected on the wall and ambient music playing in the background. It’s a bit like a futuristic waiting room. People sit in there watching the images and meet their friends. The music played there sounds like it could have come straight off this album. A perfectly pretentious soundscape for looking at scenery. It’s really a 2.5 but…

Sound and Vision was great. Most of the rest of the sonic landscape was pretty good. The last two songs were not appealing. I really enjoyed Warszawa.

Hard to know how to rate this one. I love the first half. Five stars. Actively dislike the second, experimental instrumental side. "Heroes" has the same problem. Put the first two halves together on a playlist and you have the all-time best Bowie album. So, how to rate this one as-is? Three seems harsh, especially since I listen to side one all the time, but that's what it gets as an album score.

Since I am still new to Bowie, I never knew he did albums like this. The first half is okay, but I liked the atmospheric sound of the second half better. I will need more time with this one. 3.5

The only CD burner I ever had is my fireplace. My brother had a CD burner and burned this CD for me circa the Napster days and presented it to me complete with a replica of the jewel case cover. From afar the CD looks legit but if you look closely or open the jewel case the subterfuge falls apart. This album is a decent listen and it's certainly adventurous. I do think there is a better use than ambient for a side of Bowie vinyl but it was trying something new which I appreciate. I don’t think this was as good as the next album w Emo and I still prefer the cocaine trilogy to the Berlin trilogy.

Mostly instrumental. Good background music.

I first got to know and intrigued with David Bowie in the early 80s. "Let's Dance" and "Tonight" hooked me. It is not lost on me that this was far into his parade of paradigms and personas. In retrospect I can also appreciate that I got to know him slipping into a bit of indulgence and self-parody, especially with "Never Let Me Down." Later I became seriously committed with "Outside" and "Heathen" and of course I get it he's gone through countless reinvention ups and downs. Anyway, it wasn't until later that I started to wander backwards through his catalog and got to know and appreciate "Low." I acknowledged it was phenomenal but didn't connect so well. In essence it seems disjointed as if it were two separate EPs, one funky romp from Bowie and one cosmic ambient trip from Eno. The contrast is jarring and a bit of a bait and switch with the first half being so infectious and then being hijacked by Eno, overreaching beyond collaborative production. So I would give the first half a 4 and the rest somewhere under a 3.

Good music back in the day when lyrics drove the song.

Really good listen. Gonna give this album a 3 and add “Speed of Life” to the play list.

It’s fine. Not Bowie’s best and shouldn’t be on this list!

A more ethereal and synth-heavy Bowie. I'd need to be in the mood for Vangelis-style dreamscapes before listening to this one again.

I tried to listen on YouTube and got tricked where someone put the first song as David Bowie then their own weirdo music after and after 3 or 4 songs I was thinking this is fucking weird for Bowie and realised it wasn’t him. Ohhhh lordy. Once I finally got to the right album I liked it ! Not his best album , warszawa is a weird sone

Upbeat instrumentals, not the biggest fan of the vocals

def not my favorite Bowie album

Album 7 of 1001 David Bowie - Low I imagine that Bowie fans were a bit disappointed when this originally came out back in January of 1977. Dave was seemingly going through some changes (pardon the pun) at the time and it shows in this album. That isn't because of the quality but because it is different from what one would have expected. Vocals are rare. The last few tracks would be lovely during a massage. It is a very good listen but don't put it on expecting the poppish version of Bowie. This is something a bit different. A bit experimental. Favorite Track : Sound and Vision 3 / 5

I don’t know the first half has a few quite boring bowie songs and then the second half is the kinda thing you fall asleep to. I’ve never really understood low to be honest it’s just so meh and just experimental for the sake of it (which I think heroes does better) 3/5.

David Bowie brings an interesting sound here that becomes klmore ambient in the second half.

Not my fave from Dave

I like Bowie a lot but this album didn’t really do anything special for me personally

I know this album was ahead of its time but I don’t really feel it. For me it’s a bit too experimental and spacy. Don’t get me wrong, everything Bowie did was somehow great but I rather stick to his pop stuff.

Not too interesting - but not blatantly obnoxious - no real desire to listen to again

this album is completely different from david bowie's biggest hits and the albums i've heard of his thus far on this list. bowie leans into an experimental electronic sound here. while he had always gravitated into a different/unusual sort of sound, the music found on low is nowhere near his usual glam rock. in addition, a good chunk of these songs are simply instrumentals. to be honest, what bowie excelled at here was the instrumentals! the songs containing lyrics were okay but forgettable. the instrumentals are a weird mix of eerie and serene. a little space age-y. it keeps you on your toes. i admire artists who over their careers frequently changed their sound and played around with different kinds of music, good or bad. bowie's low landed in the good category. i was surprised by the change in sound with this album--and i enjoy it more than other bowie albums. i kind of wish there were no vocals, especially since the instrumentals are so impactful on their own. still a 3, though.

More interesting than good? Feels like Bowie is finding his way into something new that doesn’t get fully realized until Toy.

I liked the songs where Bowie didn't open his fat mouth

3/5 I was excited to see Bowie but this album was kinda lackluster. It had a lot of instrumental songs which I wasn't expecting but overall nothing was very catchy or interesting. #sad

Not bad! Nothing that really drew me in or stuck with me but also nothing that got on my nerves. I doubt I'll revist this but I'm less dubious about listening to more Bowie after this experience so a win?

Sound and Vision is one of his best! Most of the rest of this one is new to me. Warszawa has a definite Brian Eno feel to it. More than another of the other songs on the Album. Standouts: Sound and Vision Others: Speed of Life, Always Crashing the Same Car, Warszawa Rating: 3.5

Pretty good but not something I would get sick in my head

Good first half. Awful second half. Yeah Bowie was influenced by the Eno ambient stuff (which I've already gotten a bunch of) but that doesn't make it good. Only interesting thing I can say is that I biked by Hansa studio for over a year before learning that I was.

Not bad

Not my favorite Bowie. I like a more focused Bowie. I like a poppier Bowie. A less Eno Bowie? I appreciate Eno being Eno and taking us places we otherwise might not go, but still. Not my favorite Bowie.

Not really my thing. A lot of ambient music, but a good album to show Bowie’s versatility.

Enjoyed it

It was interesting, early electronic ambient music. Sound and vision was the best track. I can hear many later works in this album, and it was definitely an influence on other artists.

Encore une fois album un peu chiant de Bowie MAIS quand même: Sound and Vision excellente chanson Speed of life très bien aussi Breaking glass sympa.. Entre 2 et 3 mais l'effet Bowie pousse à 3

Solid Bowie, 3.5

shout out Brian Eno. This was a pretty good bowie i never listened to before. but nothing crazy.

Ihan ok.

This is our 188th album, the fifth Bowie album we've gotten, and the second in three days. No disrespect, but I'm ready for a break (or should I say "ch-ch-ch-ch-changes?"). STILL haven't gotten an AC/DC album. Or any of the Jacksons. Or Weird Al (he better be on this list). Or Prince! C'mon, algorithm. Hook a honky up with some different all-time greats.

vascillates between annoying and fun. 3 or 4 stars idk.

Lyrics cool. Instrumentals not for me

Not my favorite DB album. There are a lot of instrumental songs that are very futuristic vibe. It was ok.

First time listening to Bowie. Pretty good and fun to listen to

More instrumental tracks than I expected, but stil pure bowie

Interesting that some of these songs sound like they were made today instead of in 1977.

I will have to majorly disagree with BUBS, someone I thought I knew and loved. After reading his review, I don’t know who he is anymore. Did we listen to different albums?? I thought this was a great album. Jacob and I listened to it on his car speakers on the freezing Ohio roads. I thought it was a jam! There were songs that felt like a Berstein soundtrack—so beautiful. The instrumentals were pretty. Not a lot of vocals to go on. I’d listen again! 3/5.

First half is pretty good; it's fun and bouncy. Second half gets pretty spacey and drawn out. An experimental record with hits and misses.

Nunca tinha parado para ouvir Bowie. Interessante, mas não a ponto de querer ouvir esse album de novo

3.5 Some good songs, end of the album too ambient for me

For me this album has always been overrated, I've listen to numerous times and my only conclusion is if it wasn't a David Bowie album then no one would care. It's not a bad album but it's not groundbreaking either. I think Kraftwork or Eno works is more interesting.

Not the Bowie I personally prefer musically, but an interesting enough record. Even the instrumental tracks held my attention.

A solid listen till about track 8 when the more experimental and ambient stuff kicks in.

Interesting listen for my first listen of a Bowie album. Synths typical of the era, or a bit before their time. Unusual choice to put an instrumental at the front of the album.

Parece el soundtrack de una película, no está mal melodicamete pero las letras no están y a mí gusta le falta eso para poder disfrutarlo más. Debió ser un gran álbum para su época, no lo dudo.

Liked the folky vibe of a few tracks

very instrumental

Classic

First side good, short songlets. Second side ambient and bleh.

The A side was a complete throwaway for me, but the B side was decently redemptive. No idea what Bowie was trying to do, some sort of space spiritual mumbo-jumbo I imagine, but it sounded pretty good. Makes sense as this was a sort of a post-drug redemption arc point of Bowie's career. 3 sets of prayer beads out of 5 📿📿📿

Did y'all listen to Sleep Party People's newest album?? Similar sounds.

Fínt dót. Ekki viss um að ein hlustun sé nóg.

Overall wasn't my favourite Bowie period, had the odd glimmer in it.

Decent

Two Bowie albums in two days, after Blackstar yesterday. I'm really not a fan, but whilst this album was a lot less modern sounding than the aforementioned, it was better than some of the other Bowie albums I've already had.

Interesting and not what I expected. Mostly instrumental. Apparently he was inspired by Kraftwerk. Much better than Kraftwerk.

It's fine. I do like a lot of David Bowie, but this one isn't hitting for me. I think I appreciate the fact that he did a weird musical half more than I like the weird musical half.

Atmospheric, vibey but not very memorable

It was alright, didnt drag me in so much though.

3/11, 27%

First half not great, second half spacey and cool.

Good listening, will do again

Nice to have another bowie album. Still hasn't changed my opinion on him, which is one of distant positivity. I enjoyed this album but like every other album this week, nothing really sticking out to make it more than a 3.

"One’s initial reaction is: “Oh look another overrated Bowie record. Can't have enough of those in this list, now can we?” This is definitely not terrible, but also neither life-changing nor even all that interesting. On a second listen, that reaction is more or less confirmed. Sure, there’s some edgy textures, but the production is alternately muddy and tinny. Man, are those some cheesy synths on “Speed of Life.” There’s much that’s derivative (typical Bowie), always aiming to sound like something (or someone) else, in this case Kraftwerk. The slightly-ahead-of-its-time sonic factor and the substantial coolness of ""Sound and Vision,” “Be My Wife” and “A New Career in a New Town” (the last being the best thing on the record) can’t make up for the wholly contrived feel of this thing (again, typical Bowie). Then there’s the standard (speaking of tinny) Tin Machine penalty that must be retroactively assigned to every Bowie record. The last four wordless, ambient tracks are okay, semi-interesting experimentation and noodling, but a bit too synthetic. One wants to ask why they aren’t credited to Eno. And just because Joy Division were inspired to choose their original name from the lugubrious “Warszawa” doesn’t make it great or memorable (or any less turgid for that matter). They get pretty ponderous pretty quickly, sounding more like Muzak of slightly-above-average artiness, what the mid-70s thought the future would sound like (mid-’70s were mostly wrong, it would seem). This is a 3.4 (rounding down because of overexposure) – in no way imperative to hear or essential (more like tangential) to a life’s listening.

Was not my favorite. Very weird psychedelic. Not many lyrics. Music is impressive bot not necessarily my preference on what to listen too. Not a huge fan of his voice either.

This is not Bowie's best outing, but a good album nonetheless. The songs are OK, and when I am in the mood I quite like the instrumental pieces. 3/5

Enjoyed: yes Listens: 3 Not his best album. Instrumentals are definitely the high points here

3.5 stars. I actually really like the largely-instrumental B side, the album as a whole is a pretty interesting package. Yeah, it's not one of the "biggest" Bowie albums, but I see the artistic significance here. Great work from Eno. Would pair interestingly with "Blackstar"

I’m sure there will be David Bowie albums here that are a 4 or 5… this just wasn’t one of them. Prefer something more lyrics forward from him.

I like Bowie as much as the average person but never really found myself putting on Bowie albums in their entirety—more sprinkling songs in mixes. There are some standout tracks on this album (Sound and Vision, for example). Despite a couple of snoozers, overall I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the album.

First half and second half of this album are both phenomenal- but feel like separate albums from each other?

3.4 . it's ok but some songs just have random noise

Cool sounding record. None of the tracks really stand out though.

I didn’t pay too much attention to it, I probably should have. May listen again today.

Very interesting albulm. The instrumentals were an odd addition. My favorite was sound and vision and subterraneans

An album of two halves. Side 1 comprises some 'proper' songs (including 'Sound and Vision' - possibly my favourite Bowie song), whilst Side 2 comprises experimental soundscapes with sparse vocals and electronic elements. Whilst some of the other Bowie albums have disappointed beyond the famous singles, this avoids a similar fate by placing the emphasis on the experimental elements - it is the handful of 'normal' songs that appear more out of place. The only problem is that what was innovative in 1977 can now sound a bit dated in 2022. Overall, I quite liked this, but it didn't blow me away. It's appearing more and more as if Bowie may be primarily a great singles artist. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Sound and Vision Date listened: 29/08/22

Nice background music

Interesting but not catchy. Sound samples are interesting.

Creatively electric rock. Bowie's voice is quite the complement to experimental rhythmic sounds.

I like Low, but not in my favourite 3 Bowie albums.

highlights: - art decade

A decent album, but not Bowie's best. The front half is fairly weak as far as Bowie's songwriting goes. The back half includes some fun ambient tracks that would be nice to chill out and vibe to while high as hell. Maybe will revisit it at some point in the future. Right now I feel it is a 3 star album, mostly because of the quality of his other work.

Some great tracks but also a lot of what sounds like playing around with the synth

interesting how short songs are - kinda 2020's in that regard. 2nd half kinda interesting. Thought it was okay but hasn't converted me to bowie

Extraña combinación de canciones relativamente más tradicionales con otras más instrumentales y experimentales. La primera parte me parece buena, casi llegando a muy buena, la segunda parte que busca crear un sentimiento de desolación sólo llega a ser molesta. Sound and Vision y Be My Wife son las mejores a mi parecer.

Not my style. In general I like David Bowie, but this album is just random pitches of noise.

king of art-rock

Meh. I could have lived without this one. It just wasn't really my thing. Pretty sparse on vocals and that's my favorite part of Bowie songs, so...eh. it was fine. Bowie's meh is still a lot of people's best, so naturally this still gets 3 stars for effort. Fave track: speed of life. What a bop. Wish I'd liked the rest of the album as much. Fave track:

It’s ok. I think there is better Bowie available.

From the get go the sound of this album let’s you know that it’s pushing the boundaries. I’ve never heard anything like Speed Of Life with the harmonizer creating an industrial electronic high pitched sound. One of my favorite aspects of the album is the prominent bass guitar. It is in the driver’s seat for several songs, like Breaking Glass & Sound and Vision. The video game like feel to What In The World is fun. I have two main issues with this album. First, too many of the songs feel short and unfinished. It feels like the full concept for each song was not fleshed out. Second, the back half of the album is mostly instrumental, which I enjoy here by the way, but it feels like a different album. It’s the Brian Eno effect. The two halves do not go together for me. This album is exciting. I listened to it several times. The sound is incredibly interesting. And yet because of that excitement, the album also incredibly disappointing due to its incompleteness and change in style.

nice album, but for me just as a background, I won't come back honestly

While I am not the biggest Bowie fan, I was impressed by how modern this album sounds.

I love Bowie, but this is not my favourite album

Better than expected, A lot of the songs fell into the background but none really stuck out as being awful.

This album definitely loses me in the second half. Some excellent tracks though. 3.5/5 stars

Its got some good tracks and some duds. Middle of the road Bowie album

Pleasant enough, but not the most inspiring music I've ever heard from Bowie's pen.

Interesting that he has the Polish spelling for Warsaw, as well as, presumably, Polish lyrics? It's a good album that I'd listen to again at some point, I think.

I first heard this over 15 years after it was released. Didn’t much enjoy the lauded second side. Still love Be My Wife. Every time I revisit it grows on me more. This time it’s clear that my problem is that all the new music since 1977 has probably been informed by this LP, so it doesn’t sound new or innovative to me. However, we do now know that it was thoroughly new music at the time of recording. The synths, the drum effect, mixing more conventionally crafted songs on one side and instrumental textures on the other. Yes, it’s really influential and boundary-pushing and side one keeps up with the better mid 70s Bowie material. Not quite good enough for 4*

never bothered too much with the ambient music genre but this is just bowie class

A side of David Bowie I hadn't heard before. Not bad.

Less innovative and more commercial sounding Bowie. Lukewarm

Wasn’t keen on the instrumental songs on this.

First half is really good particularly enjoyed breaking glass and sound and vision which I already knew. Second half is utter shit. Completely different ruins the album really. 3 stars for the good first half but must try harder David Bowie

Nice BGM, very dreamy music.

A really interesting listen. I've always loved how unique his albums sound, unfortunately has never really clicked for me.

3/11/22

Cool. I never would have guessed any of the instrumental stuff was Bowie. 3.3.

Interesting experimental rock

good, not enough singing but liked the mood

More interesting than the usual Bowie. Loving the space oddessy vibes, but not the album overall.

yeah okay i don’t really know

As usual with Bowie, appreciate the talent but I’m not into it personally. Not this one at least - waiting to find the Bowie album I can fall in love with!

Iba muy buen pero luego si se ondio

Not what I expected. A lot of ambient electronic sounds.

Quite good as background music and a departure from what I would usually expect. Nothing particularly standout though.

Enjoyable but mostly filler at the end. No particular track stood out.

Atmospheric. Definitely an album that'll get better the more listens you give it.

It's very interesting to know a little bit more of this so famous "Berlin phase" of Bowie. Actually, I didn't enjoy it too much, however, it's impossible not to note how it influenced modern songs after it.

Love it already, and I don't think any of the big singles are on this one

I do think it was really interesting but it was also kinda boring. There wasn’t singing which is fine but made me lost interest and not pay complete attention. i did really like the overall sound though.

Never heard this one before. Great Stuff.

It’s got Sound and Vision, but he’s done better

It was interesting. Killer bass tones. More new age than I expected.

Love his voice, which makes me wish there was more of it on this album as there were a lot of instrumental songs. No song particularly stood out as one that I'll go back to again but I enjoyed listening the whole time!

I love David Bowie but don’t like post-punk, so maybe that explains why I never truly liked this album. Maybe I liked his music better when he was on heroin, I don’t know.

David Bowie has never been my favorite.

Interesting album. Not much singing or really any lyrics.

Bowie is a referent. I didn't know he mades instrumental songs.

Love Bowie just not this album

The songs are great, but the synthy stuff at the end is all Radiophonic Workshop outtakes - tuneless noodling.

3/5 Slow tempo

Nice abstract album

good theme throughout a little experimental but no outstanding moments in my mind

My stance on this one is the same as for Heroes: I really like the typical David Bowie, but the synth-ambient Bowie just doesn't do it for me. First half 4 stars, second half 2.5 stars.

Good background, probably wouldn’t seek it out on it’s own. Decent within-album variety.

My first time listening to this album and my first impression is squarely on the "meh" side of things. There's something about it, though, that makes me think it becomes better the more you listen to it, so I'm going to give this a slightly higher score than my gut says I should.

Good listen, musically. The album seems incomplete between the short and fading out tracks, general lack of lyrics, and different concepts on each side.

Is this what a concept album is? Kinda weird but not unenjoyable to listen to..

Worth listening to as a whole album. Most tracks are familiar, but together they really feel on that Low feeling. If you are listening to this regularly, you probably need to take up a team sport or something to get you out of the house.

I love the first half of the album with all of it's spiky post punk attitude but the soundscape instrumentals though should be applauded by someone of Bowie's level to try new avant garde ideas, they are just lacking something. Maybe I need to do loads of blow and listen to them again... Best Tracks: Breaking Glass; Sound and Vision; Always Crashing In The Same Car

Listened 27/9/21

Very instrumental, first song gorillaz second song of Montreal

Great album with awesome instrumentals, it’s clear this album has tons of artistic merit. As good as it is, I don’t see myself coming back to listen to it for fun very often, but still a good listen.

While this Album still has great innovation and Bowie's mastermind, the end result from a music standpoint is just not my cup of tea

Very interesting - seemingly mostly instrumental (didn't keep track of how much), there's a mix of ambient sounds with straightforward beats. It still sounds like Bowie even without the voice.

Just the right amount of weird for me. I appreciated all the instrumentation, both real (bass lines were rocking through most of the album) and synthentic. Most of the songs were between 2-3 minutes, which I think was perfect - it was just long enough for me to think "hey, this is pretty cool" and then it would end before I got bored. Last few tracks lost me though. In general, I wish I would have heard more of Bowie's voice - most of the time I felt like I was listening to a movie score.

Of course I know David Bowie, but I think every track on this album was new to me. It was different than what I've heard from Bowie before. "Weeping Wall" almost sounds like Prog Rock. I have no idea what "Warszawa" was supposed to be (weird). "Sound and Vision" came up as the favorite from this album, but overall this album gets an official "okay".

not my favorite

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Be my wife

Short and sweet

I have listened to some Bowie before but I hadn't listened to this particular album. It's a good album but to be honest nothing really special about it at the first listen atleast. For now I would rank it a weak 3.

Not a big fan of Bowie, could not find non remastered versions.

Nothing crazy on this album, lots of instrumental, good listening.

First half is meh 70s rock. 2nd half is epic/atmospheric synth music. I love the 2nd half

Background Bowie, but good

Cool ambient jams
