Reviews (page 13 of 14)
This is not the Bowie I like and I’m not a Brian Eno fan. This is an album I’ve listened to for the first, the second and the last time. Warszawa is such a drag to get through!
Not my fav
Like it, but didn't love it enough to relisten to it, if i had to choose a favorite it would be breaking glass, but again, it would not be a first choice to listen to in any circumstance
Not the Bowie for me. Moments I liked, but other stuff felt like theatrical filler. Prefer when he is on drugs.
The Starman gives us more score than pop music album on this as he began his sobriety with a new approach to music. It doesn’t come close to his prior work (Station to Station) which is one of my favorite albums of his.
- Ach David.. weiterhin werde ich nicht so richtig warm. Aber das Album war insgesamt immerhin sehr entspannt
Never really listened to much david bowie, and I went into this wanting to enjoy it, but I just didn't really get it. It wasn't unpleasant, but none of it was very memorable. There was maybe one or two songs that I was vibing with while listening.
No, just because it's Bowie doesn't make it OK. Sound and Vision might be my favourite Bowie song but the experiment should have started and ended there.
Disappointing! The best Bowie feels modern despite its age - this does not stick out in the same way. One reasonable bop (S&V) does not a top 1001 album make.
Perhaps I am too obtuse to get understand Art but I just did not get this at all. I'm sorry Bowie 😭 too "experimental" for me
Started strong, knackered by the end.
what
Very instrumental. The problem is I want to hear bowie.
A couple good songs but not something I'd listen to again
I liked Warszawa and the car crash one, but I don't think I'd relisten to this album.
I’m ok with an instrumental album, but this didn’t do anything for me.
When this one came out, it was probably a new low for Bowie in more than one sense. Can't convince me this album would have anywhere near as many listens if it weren't for the name.
could use more cocaine
Low is an accurate description of this album.
I actually kinda liked the bits where it got all spacey, but then he started singing again and I'm just too predisposed to hate that at this point.
There were a couple of good tracks early on, but it was really start to grate on me by the end. I had a look at the contributors and sure enough, Brian Eno was there. I'm a bit like those people that can smell cancer, in that I can hear when Eno is involved in album with a 99% success rate. That's mainly because the album sounds fucking awful. Anyway, I don't get the whole Bowie thing really. A couple of his other albums were good, but the bulk of it is just tosh to me. I amde it all the way through.... just. So it gets 2 stars.
It just doesn’t feel like anything particularly special. Its a lot of soft instrumental which sure is nice but doesn’t feel like particularly memorable and doesn’t evoke much other than the fact it would make decent elevator music
gostei menos desse que dos anteriores então vou tacar um 2,5
You can see it is well done but nothing leaps over to me.
I enjoy David Bowie’s works but this album just didn’t land with me.
This doesn't do it for me. I'm glad Bowie got himself to a better place, rehabbing and working towards taking care of himself. But this album isn't good. The beginning was too short for anything to really stick for me, and the ideas in the second half would have been done better by someone else. Favorite Song(s): none
Side A was okay but definitely not my favorite work from Bowie. I liked some of the experimental sounds like in the beginning of What in the World, but I wish they leaned into that more. It would’ve been more interesting to me if the wubs and zaps were more present characters throughout. Side B was fine - some exciting moments, and I liked the cross-cultural soundscapes. It’s actually pretty beautiful. But really no idea why it’s paired with the first half, or even why this album is even on the list The stark contrast between the halves makes me feel like I’m missing some context to the album Since I’m not doing this for a history lesson, but rather purely on how I enjoy listening to the music, this is gonna be pretty low for me.
More boring Bowie. I know it’s chalk vs cheese but he’s a comparison for you: Low is the eleventh studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 14 January 1977 through RCA Records… with his friend Iggy Pop to rid themselves of their drug addictions. Rumours is the eleventh studio album by the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 4 February 1977, by Warner Bros. The band members dealt with breakups and struggled with heavy drug use. Maybe huffing copious amounts of cocaine is beneficial to the creative process? Dunno, either way, why would I want chalk on toast?
Sound and Vision is kind of transcendent. Something Lynchian about it. But I'd rather listen to The Sea and Cake all day.
de dave isch zrugg und was hetter eus echt dasmal debi? mit neuem wind segleter es witeresmal ah mir verbi und hinterlaht nöd viel de typ wo die liste gmacht hett haltet so wies usgseht sehr viel vom herr dave meh chuntmer zudem au nöd in sinn, ich warte mal ab was eusen inhouse spezialist zu dem album zsege hett drum gibichs wort grad gern witer ah eusen dave korrespondent, de tymen goetsch nemed sies weg bitte!
I really don’t get Bowie
David Bowie is hailed as one of the greatest, I don’t see/understand it. A couple songs on this album were good, the rest didn’t really interest me, I’m going to give it a (probably too harsh) 4.8/10.
too ambient? like I didn't even notice this on in the background? So much bowie on this list and this is the first one I get?
Yet another Bowie album. I think we are getting them at an unsustainable rate. My least favorite one we've gotten so far, no real hits and a lot of songs with not much going on. High 2.
So far I think the only one I've really liked is "Be my wife".
Bowie is obviously an icon, but this album just did not do it for me. It was bordering on just... noise. 2.
My first listen to this Bowie album. Prior to this listen, I had never made the liaison between Bowie and Franz Ferdinand (the band), but it is evident with this album.
2/14/25. Love Bowie but this one wasn’t my favorite. Good songs, but a lot of forgettable gaps. I can try listening again in the future.
Not my favorite Bowie album. Couldn't really get into this one.
boring :/
Not bad!
First half was ok but not interested in the ambient stuff
Didn't really seem all that "Bowie-y" to me. The songs were some indistinct from one another and they quickly got shoved to the background, not good not bad but also not memorable.
Some songs are brilliant. Some are really annoying, though. Those that are not really songs but noise.
Didn’t feel this one.
Mid (2.5/5)
the first half, perfectly fine. the second half is a pretentious asshole’s fantasy
I actually liked the first half of the album, which I wasn't really expecting. I thought we were heading toward a solid album. Side two strikes me as mediocre at best, though. It's experimental and a little different, but it doesn't work for me. 2.4
David Bowie has made a lot of great music and some songs on this album are definitely included when I say that. Even to a lot of this album doesn't have a lot of singing the ambiance it brings is great. Not something I would listen to every day but it certainly has its place when the mood kicks in.
pretty boring wanted to go to sleep imo
Didn’t get it
Like half of this album is just noise.
Not my favorite Bowie album
I was excited to get a David Bowie album, because my exposure to him has been minimal hearing little beyond what was played on the radio, but I have always been curious about his music. I was a bit disappointed in this album. A bit too electronic for me, and many of the cuts were instrumentals or near instrumentals. Hope they have me sample another one before too long.
I mean, I guess it's good for what it is, but this is not the David Bowie I expected. Can't see myself listening to this again.
Butt. A few tracks would probably be better if stoned.
Experimental et pas ouf
A bit boring album i must say
no lyrics lol
I typically listen to music for lyrics and half of this album was instrumentals. There were some interesting sounds but not my preference.
Not as good as I was expecting.
On first listen I was not having fun, the second listen was much better and the third accidental listen was also enjoyable to a point. It’s just not my cup of tea, I appreciate the cool ethereal instrumentals but I’d rather listen to something with lyrics, unless it’s Bob Dylan. The songs with lyrics weren’t doing it for me either. I don’t think it’s a bad album but it’s certainly not my kind of music. I’m neither high on drugs nor a space cadet, the man simply didn’t make his music for me I hold nothing against our dead David, I’m sure he’s got a couple of other albums on here and I may enjoy those more
I appreciate the artistry of this album. It wasn't particularly well aligned with my mood, so I had a hard time getting into it.
Love Bowie but this one was too experimental for my tastes
David Bowie ist nicht meins.
One or two good tracks but ambient electronica just isn’t my idea of a good time.
I am a selective fan of David Bowie in that I do like a few of his songs. This album sounded a little weird for me and it is not something I would listen to regularly.
Weird album. Not my favourite from Bowie. Felt like there were only a few actual songs
I don't think many of the songs come together as an album. The whole thing feels somewhat disjointed as a straight listen-through. It's actually a 2.5* but i'm dinging it mostly for personal taste.
Yeah, another one I just don’t get. David Bowie is very talented, I just don’t like this album.
The first half sounded grating to me (and not in a good way) with the only relief being Sound and Vision. The second half improved greatly, especially with Warszawa. I could imagine these songs as an epic score for an 70s sci-fi film. Unfortunately, I'm not the biggest fan of listening to movie soundtracks in my free time.
I love Sound and Vision. The minute I hear the beat it makes me so happy. I hadn't spent much time with the full album and it's a little hard to get into. A lot of instrumentals I could probably do without. Not as great as some of his other albums in my opinion.
after years of cultivating a vaguely continental European vibe, bowie boldly declared "actually I'm just a german guy now"
Not very good.
Can I give two ratings for this please? The first load of tracks are pretty good and I could see myself getting into the album fairly heavily, and then ouch you hit track 8 and it’s utter ballbags from then on. So it’s a 4 until 7, and a 1 from then on. I’m going to give the album a 2, because you just can’t have 4 such dire tracks to end a good album.
Not great.
Bowie is baffling to me. On one album he can conjure up a hit at will to save it. With Low he seems content to meander around a laboratory of incomplete or inarticulate ideas with mild enthusiasm. Nothing really seems to be great or really catch hold of the imagination. It's like he is showing off the worst kind of artistic entitlement imaginable. Bowie is certainly a talented songwriter and musician, but even the best creative minds lose their way.
Very different from what I expect from Bowie and not my favorite.
Interesting but not super accessible
2.09
Good background music but nothing extravagant 2.5 stars
Almost an instrumental. Pretty boring.
I love David Bowie but Low is a correct assessment for this albums rating.
Not my favorite Bowie album, quite a few instrumental only songs. Typical unusual and experimental sounds from Bowie, but definitely less "punchy" than some of his other work and overall less exciting for me.
Not my cup of tea...most of them were instrumentals which I'm not really into...
Loved this album until the second half which was boring and weird. 2/5
Ok, I acknowledge that David Bowie is a genius. But this album wasn’t it.
I do like Bowie's music, but this one wasn't doing it for me. It's his 8th album in the list I've run into, and making me think the author should've had a limit on albums from a single artist.
I wasn't connecting with this and what's with all the instrumentals? This album gives me a forgettable soundtrack vibe.
Not really into that much especially the last tracks.
Quite bad and overrated, as usual from Bowie. "Be My Wife" at least caught my attention for a while, so he gets a star for that.
Too weird for me. Just overall a bit all over the place
By and large, I can't get much into David Bowie aside from a few tracks here and there, so I'm always curious to dig into a new Bowie album that I haven't heard before. Having said that, I was even more underwhelmed by this album than what I've heard previous. Almost all the songs seemed half-baked to me. As if the foundation for a good song was there, and then they just stopped building on it and said "that's good enough". I do like that there were a few more experimental instrumental tracks in there, but for an album that's already less than 40 minutes, if nearly half the tracks do not have words, there's not much else to speak of. I'm already about half out on Bowie in general, and this may push me fully into the "out" column. Notable Tracks: -Be My Wife 3/10
Lot of background music. Hardly noticed it was there. Great for working or relaxing, but not much substance.
Very disappointing! I was hoping for better! I don’t get it! Much ado about nothing!
I’m sure for its time this album was very “ahead of its time”. I can understand how it influenced many future New Wave/Alternative bands - being a big fan of that music I appreciate that aspect of the album. That being said…..it was OK to me. Could be good background music while chilling, especially the second half of the album.
I appreciate his music now more than back then
5/10, скучно это все
Strange thing. The B-Side offers some Eno-inspired soundscapes. Sound and Vision is an uber-hit but as an album that should be on the list it offers too little to make it exceptional.
First listen Saved 3/11 Top track: Speed of Life
Boring
This was pretty boring, probably would not listen through again. I liked the stretch of "Sound and Vision" -> "Always Crashing in the Same Car" -> "Be My Wife", but that's about it. Not sure why I had to hear this, idk maybe people just really like all of Bowie.
Worst Bowie yet
6/11/24 not bad, never been able to get into bowies music but i’ve tried over the past year or so. enjoyed most of the songs on this one but there would be points where a song is just dragging on too long or there would be an annoying high pitch synth just blaring. 5/10
Best Song: Warszawa. Brian Eno's influence is really appreciated here. Delicate and ethereal. Worst Song: Subterraneans. Nothing brings the hype like closing the album with a meandering sax solo. Overall: I don't get the hype. Are people really falling over themselves for this from Bowie? Sure it's kinda weird, but not excitingly so.
Not much of a David Bowie fan. I know a lot of people like him but he just doesn't quite do it for me
nowhere near bowies best
Not sure what that experimental Weeping Wall was towards the end... first six songs or so were all similar to me.
Not his best effort. And what is up with all the instrumentals? I am not here for David Bowie instrumentals. Was he trying to make instrumentals a thing again in the 70's?
This is like heady topper, I can taste that it is great, good quality, well crafted but also that I do not like it.
Not the best. Background listening
Medio down. Raro.
Not my favorite Bowie album.
naja, da kamen zu Glück noch viel bessere Sachen vom Bowie
A more obscure DB that I've ever encountered, but I was able to get through it. Not sure I would put this one on again though.
It was okay I guess
Not a big Bowie fan
I mean it’s David Bowie and I give him some credit for creating these ethereal compositions but I really couldn’t get into this album at all.
Didn’t care for this, the instrumentals felt messy and cluttered
I like Bowie but this album is pretty lame.
I’m a pretty big Bowie fan but this album is nothing special (in my opinion).
Some good
Eh
Not a fan of this album. It starts OK but the more it keeps going the more random and bizarre (not in a good way) it gets. I don't mind the instrumental part but it's just meh. "Sound and Vision" was the only song I truly enjoyed.
Meh.
No, just no. I'm sorry but at this point I'm sure we are into the "weird" Bowie. Maybe it's all weird, but this is my 3rd or 4th Bowie album on here. This is an album and not a collection of singles. I'll give it that, but there's nothing here that I found enjoyable. Long meandering soundscapes, sounds, mumbling. There are a couple tracks to start the album that are closer to traditional songs, but this just simply doesn't work for me.
There are a couple mildly catchy tracks, otherwise not much going for it. Something about the mix made everything run together.
meh
Not a lot of singing... (hooray!!) overall it's pretty good, a bit slow for the instrumentals but like it was kind of a vibe. Towards the end it started sounding like the Doctor Who soundtrack though.... (Weeping Wall 02:13). 2/5 lol i just didn't rock with it heavy 😔
Couple of good songs, rest is just arcade music instrumental crap
Same thoughts I usually have about Bowie; I see the value, appreciate the talent, and admire the ambition, skill, and influence. But the style just isn't really in my wheelhouse (that said, I did really enjoy some of the closing instrumental tracks)
All music sounds like cats bashing around on dustbin lids to me. It's like, I can hear music like I usually do, it sounds the same as it ever did, but instead of harmony, I hear discord, instead of beauty I hear ugliness that makes me want to exist in one of those silent rooms where people go mad. That seems nice. I might be having some kind of crisis. As a musician, this is troubling. I might hate music. Anyway, don't listen to me, I'm sure this is excellent to someone not having an existential crisis. At least it's not another damned Beatles album. Really, All the Beatles albums are the most influential music ever produced? All of them!??! What about Mozart? That guy had some pretty big hits. Who's representing that chief? I guess he didn't release too many albums, while alive, but he sure has a lot out nowadays.
Mostly instrumental plus he’s gay lol
Quite forgettable, I actually forgot I listened to this album when I came back to rate it
Likely would sound great if I were high. As is, it gets repetitive fast.
Meh.
Call me crazy, but could have used more words
Is this a boring movie soundtrack?
Never been a huge fan of ambient electronic music so I really struggled with this. Could not get into it but would accept that does not make it a bad album. Just not for me
First Bowie album here. Very instrumental, kind of meh. Second half is very atmospheric. Maybe ahead of its time or something. 2*.
I have never heard an album this boring. It's sad it's Bowie's.
This solidified my opinion that I’m just not a Bowie person.
I like David Bowie but not a fan of his only instrumental songs
Not a fan. I found it boring, none of the songs grabbed me. Give me other Bowie!
Min favorit låt från albumet var Be My Wife.
Second David Bowie album I’ve heard this week, he’s just not my cuppa
A Bowie I didn’t connect with. I’ll have to give it another shot at some point
so far i dont think its very exciting. halfway through. some cool sounds but thats pretty much all it is.
Experimental Bowie is not my happy place
Overrated, not his best.
Love Bowie but this wasn't it
Definitely not my style
A life long Bowie fan but this album is not a favourite, verging on depressing the title is apt.
Hit and miss. Some good stuff, lot of guff too.
I don’t think this is Bowie at his best. In fact, this was written at a time he and Iggy Pop were trying to turn their lives around from being hooked on drugs, so yeah this isn’t the sort of Bowie I had hoped to hear. That said I really liked Subterraneans, a track that was meant for Bowie’s soundtrack to The Man Who Fell To Earth before he pulled out from doing the soundtrack.
Somewhat interesting…
Weird instrumental album
love David Bowie but not a fan of this album
He's a creative genius yet I struggled to appreciate this album.
It started off well....but I was not a fan of the last few experimentally, new age-y instrumental tracks. First half of the album, even though the instrumental tracks were a bit repetitive I liked the sound Bowie created and the instrumentation he chose. But he lost me by the end so the album didn't end on a good note for me. First half 3.5 stars, second half 1.5 stars, total 2.5 stars but can't give half stars so 2.
the instrumental parts are really nice 2.5
Unremarkable, Warszawa was the best thing about the album
experimental, not sure its for me
Idk what I'm missing, but I find this quite boring. I just don't know what the hype is all about. The production is nice and the instrumentals are good. But overall, I didn't enjoy it as much as others.
45/100
There are so many great songs by David Bowie. Just this album doesn't show it.
Unremarkable.
Certainly interesting, but not really something I'd actively listen to very often. The first part is relatively tradicional while the secons part is very focused on instrumentals and repeating spacey melodies with sometimes a sort of an eearie vibe. Doesn't really focus on vocals and aims to create more of an ambient. Could be used as interesting background music though. A song that stands out the most to me is definitely Speed of Light. Nice spacey bowie-like experimental sound. Idk though if won't get bored of it quite fast as it is pretty repetitive. Sound and Vison isn't too bad either. Not sure that I'll return much to this album though, but good to know. 5/10
In the first half of the record, the way it sounded felt a decade earlier than 1977, but after the first half some of the tasteful abstraction started to shine through more, creating some freshness. The songs with Bowie's vocals usually ended up being my least favorite; on those particularly I didn't feel the vision and they were mostly forgettable. Some others I could just appreciate for sounding balanced, unique, and immersive. I tried to listen without the influence of name attached and as a result the record as a whole left me lukewarm and not personally enthralled. 4/10
Second half was rough. No standouts.
Although I enjoyed this album, there were times that I was wishing that it was over. There are some songs I really liked such as “Be My Wife”. Most of the synth heavy songs I was waiting for Dieter to pop out and ask me if I wanted to touch his monkey.
Interesting ideas and cool synth stuff but not much here besides the first few tracks
I prefer Space Oddity
Started off pretty good. A couple of nice tracks, although the ones with lyrics often felt unfinished and almost like they ended before they should have. By the end of the album this wore out its welcome, though. Songs were too long and might have given me a headache. Better than Black Star, but I know he's got way better stuff to come in the 1001 for me.
not great
Not bad by any means, but not really my cup of tea. Highlight track: \"Be My Wife\"
Not my cup of tea. I'm sure it was experimental at the time, but it seems a bit tame to me.
nah this ain't it
2/5
Me gusta el otro Bowie.
Okay, but by now way Bowie's best album.
I like some of Bowie's work. I did not care for this. 1.5/5 Won't listen again
Quite experimental. I quite liked the first half of the album, particularly sound and vision. From Warszawa onwards it got pretty boring imo, I wanted to stop listening to it. It's interesting to see how the most popular song usually are, in fact, the best ones. 2 stars.
Was waiting for this album to end. Not really something I would ever listen to on my own.
More prog rocky than I expected. Wasn't really into some of the vocal interludes. Album has definitely aged.
Was not my kind of thing
Too much instrumental
Ikke det bedste Bowie. Meget instrumentalt.
Not super memorable,
:)
Today's Bowie album is one of his Berlin Trilogy where he went to Germany to clean the drugs out of his system and ended up making 3 records in as many years, plus helped Iggy Pop make 2 in the same timeframe. It's a solid album. The only thing I don't like is the scent of fucking Brian Eno all over this record with his off tempo spacey horseshit. I feel it takes away from an otherwise great album. Overall, not my favourite Bowie album. I knew nothing on this one, and didn't care to. I can't see myself seeking this album out again. Bowie is great, just this album kind of sucks. I blame Eno. Favourite songs: Sound and Vision, Be My Wife, Speed of Life Least favourite songs: Warszawa, Weeping Wall 2/5
Honestly apart from Sound and Vision I hated it
As usual, David Bowie blows
Not my cup of tea
Only ok
Way to synth heavy for my taste. Had some good tracks, but I would never listen to the whole thing end to end again.
Falls in the category of Bowie albums I consider too experimental and I’m not gonna listen to it again. Many songs where it’s just instrumentals and I think he leaves himself off the album as much as he does on purpose but I’m not gonna fw it just cause it’s different
Doesn’t do it for me. I don’t know but Bowie just doesn’t resonate with me. Tried his stuff multiple times, and normally I love experimental rock, but this is too much
This ain't it, chief. If this didn't have David Bowie's name on it, it would just be another 70s/80s art-pop record. I feel bad giving Bowie 2 stars, but this album just doesn't hook me at all.
My guy really forgot to add lyrics to half the album. Would enjoy a Bowie album more if it had more Bowie.
Definitely not Bowie's best and the album is a bit of a mess. I was listening to the remastered edition, and I'm not sure if the mastering of the original was any better but here it was utter crap. Putting the bad mastering aside however (which is difficult to do), this still sounds like an experiment gone horribly wrong. While we expect nothing less than wild experiments from Bowie, this one just misses the magic of a lot of Bowie's other works.
I read the Hugo Wilcken book about this album a while back. It was interesting to read about how utterly insane he was coming off of the release of station to station and his moving to berlin to record this was sort of his escape. That gave me hope that the resulting album would be good, but unfortunately it’s just not. Not as bad as black star though.
não curti o álbum mas não era tão ruim também ahhahh. algumas músicas instrumentais e outra cantadas, não consigo decidir qual preferi. achei a sonoridade meio eletrônica? synth? mas não bem executada aos meus ouvidos.
Not David Bowies best work
This ain’t it mr Bowie
Doesn't get good until the last couple of tracks. End isn't bad to listen to.
was slow and nothing stood out to me except sound and vision
A David Bowie album that's comprised mostly of experimental instrumentals? I hate to say it but this album was a huge miss for me. Considered to be one of his best albums, this really didn't do anything for me, and that's a shame.
I wondered why the back half of this album became a meandering electronic soundscape, then I learned that Brian Eno was involved in this album. I love David Bowie, but found this album to be pretty plain. The story behind it is interesting enough to explain the music.
I had high hopes coming into this album, as with all my exposures to Bowie from this period. This is late 70s Bowie, however, and it would seem that much of the album was made in the absence of our leading star. At least that’s how it sounds to me on my first few listens. There are so many tracks that are puzzling to me; on the one hand, here are some of the best instruments and production on any Bowie album, with really creative instrument choice, sound design, and arrangements, especially for the period. And almost nothing Brian Eno touches is without merit. That said, it sure sounds like Bowie phoned it in on top of a couple of these instruments after they had been recorded. I keep waiting for Bowie to come through with one of his signature, aching yet effervescent rock star lines. But he’s almost nowhere to be found! And when he does arrive, it’s too little too late. I’ll have to hear the rest of this supposed trilogy, but until then, I am left none to impress. 2/5. This review was translated and dictated by Becca Lipstein. No proofing was done.
Just felt like white noise all said and done
Subterraneans is a timeless emotional ambient track. Brian Eno & Bowie
It's not Ziggy Stardust, is it?
there's only one song that bowie sings on the rest are him experimenting in the studio
David Bowie is good but this is too avant-grade for me. Maybe if I was more of an art student. The first couple songs are good but then… eh.
It was fine, I love David Bowie but not all his music is for me.
Not bad, but wasn't really into it.
Some songs are ok (4 stars), but others, the most, not
I don't know, it's okay. Not really my thing.
Bof
Low is okay, it has Sound and Vision and not a lot else. No need to overthink another 2/5.
Not for me, this one. I think I don't really like Bowie as much as most people do, we've had a couple of his albums now and I haven't really gotten along with any of them. I've read that this album is really influential etc., but I didn't find it a particularly enjoyable listen. It doesn't feel like it's finished, loads of the songs either drift out or end a bit abruptly. Sound and Vision is the best of a pretty average bunch (but even that feels like it's missing something despite a really good hook). 2/5.
Did enjoy the first half of the album. The instrumental songs didn’t say much to me, though. What is true is that it is an easy record to listen.
I thought I was listening to some x-files soundtrack at times. But it was pleasant enough, maybe not something to put on repeat for me.
Would be happy to never hear this again. Not bad enough to turn it off, but not enjoyable for me at all
Bowie certainly seems to have captured some sort of zeitgeist here. I'm not sure if it's the zeitgeist of 1977, or some Blade Runner-esque 2177 dystopia, but it's got a vibe. Not my vibe, granted, but a vibe. Some of the songs could make for some interesting sci-fi or fantasy movie soundtrack material, but I wasn't feeling it as an album to listen to in 2022.
I liked Sound and Vision, but overall the sound was soul deafening.
This is my least favorite album from Bowie. Can't wait for the other albums of his on this list.
A great artist with less to show for it than he ought to have, he's never not experimenting. yet on the four Bowie albums that have come up so far, none of the experiments have worked spectacularly. Still, I'm pleased he gave them a shot.
not my Jam
Great title for this LP, Low. An apt description of my general disposition following its conclusion, not to mention the percentage of possibility that I’ll listen to this recording again. Admittedly, I’ve only been a casual fan of Bowie throughout his varied incarnations. I understand he’s a rock god. I’m just usually worshiping at another altar, that’s all, and so don’t have much to contribute to the litany. For what it’s worth, only two brief observations: 1) Listening to a Bowie LP with over half the tracks as instrumentals is like listening to a Hendrix LP minus the guitar solos. What’s the point? The primary reason I listen to Bowie is to hear him sing, damn it! I feel gypped. 2) This would make a wonderful soundtrack to a movie, a genre Bowie happened to be already familiar with at this point in his career. The only obvious problem, though, is there’s no accompanying film! Again, gypped. Straight up, I loathed side one: a sloppy, clunky, shrilly mess of a recording. Bowie’s lyrics aren’t much better, either, including a lame marriage proposal on track six?! Not that my displeasure took that long to coalesce. I wasn’t a minute into the second track before I started looking for some glass of my own to break. Side two was a little more tolerable. I am a fan of Brian Eno, and could definitely hear the influence he was already having on Bowie. Perhaps the musical ideas on the LP just needed to stew in the crockpot a little longer to get as tender and tasty as they would on later recordings. Or could it possibly have been the effects of Bowie’s new sober lifestyle, following years of prodigious cocaine abuse in the city of the fallen angels? That would cover a multitude of musical sins. Nothing much good has ever come from the union of LA and (B)'Low.' I’m just thankful Bowie survived it all; and, that this wasn’t his only recording. That said, (B)'Low' blew, for me. Would it have been too much to have allowed Bowie just a little bit of cocaine, purely for recording purposes? (He deserves one star just for his Bowieocity.)
I have a hard time enjoying anything from the late 70s or the whole 80s. This experience was once again a proof of that 😂 really don't like this kind of music, but it was interesting to listen to this entire record, since ive never listened to anything by bowie besides his biggest hits. Still, not for me though
Didn't finish the listen.
Breaking Glass has a great groove. Warszawa was very trippy. All in all just not for me
David Bowie has some iconic songs and I guess this particular album would be considered an iconic sound with a lot of synth. However, I found this album to be rather boring with a lot of repetitive noises playing. It’s not something I would listen to again.
Definitely experimental but I wasn't a huge fan
I thought this album was alright in the beginning but then started getting really instrumental. Not spectacular and why I feel David Bowie is very hit or miss. 4/10.
Nothing grabbed me. Moody.
Yeah was ok couldn't get that excited about it
The only song that I really liked from this album was Always Crashing in the Same Car, which I guess is enough to give it 2 stars.
2/5 :( why god, why? :(
Seems the legend is better than the reality
I like Bowie. Hadn't listened before. Odd album. Opening instrumental, very short 2nd track, I like "Sound and Vision", although fade out endings generally bug me. The last few (mostly) instrumental tracks felt otherworldly. Most likely an album I'd need to listen to many times to get the appreciation that bigger Bowie fans have.
-I enjoy David Bowie but I haven't listened to most of his stuff -Songs are upbeat, mysterious, adventurous -Wish he sang more especially towards the end -Ending half of the album sounded more like a movie soundtrack because it was mainly instrumental -Last half of the album kind of made it seem incohesive to the first half of the album -Favourite songs are What In The World,
Still don't "get" Bowie. Sorry.
Not an album I've listened to before and I'm not likely to listen to it again. Left me feeling cold. Other than Sound and Vision (which is great and earns the album a second star) I found the entire experience a bit boring and a slog to get through
this is pretty boring so far. three songs in and I'm turning it off.
Ну пойдёт, на фоне послушать. Один трек даже слышал раньше
4/10 end of the album was cool and trippy
A bit rubbish
While some of the individual tracks impress with their strong instrumentation and influences, the album as a whole reads more as a grouping of demos than a cohesive product.
Below average album. Several songs are just instrumentals. Sound and vision is a good song that stands out but the rest just drones along without much value. 5.1/10
It’s hard to make an instrumental album interesting all the way through.
Like the previous Bowie albums I've already tried, this starts off quite promising from a musical viewpoint but then quickly becomes somewhat tiresome and flat. Best track: Speed of Life
Mercifully short. Sound and vision is a decent track. Apart from that it was too experimental for me. 2 albums in and I still don't get Bowie.
Zu schwer für mich. Brauche mehr Rhythmus und oder Beat :)
Blerg. His vocals are ok on this album. It's tough to give a Bowie album a poor rating but I definitely will when it doesn't even have him singing hardly. It's boring. It's low in the list of great Bowie albums.
For me, Bowie is a greatest hits artist, lot of dross amongst the diamonds. 2.75
There are a lot of Bowie albums that are better.
An unavoidable widow of his legacy, I assume this was a dark time for him. Not my favourite
Yep.... Still not a Bowie guy, maybe after this list makes me listen to the entire discography it will click with me. tesla out of 5
Nope
Low is the 11th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 14 January 1977 by RCA Records. After years of drug addiction and personal instability living in Los Angeles, Bowie escaped to France in 1976 with his friend and singer Iggy Pop to become sober. After meeting musician Brian Eno the same year, Bowie began recording the first of three collaborations with Eno and producer Tony Visconti later named the "Berlin Trilogy". The music on Low is grounded in art rock and experimental rock, and features Bowie's first explorations in electronic and ambient styles. It is influenced by the German music scene, particularly bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Harmonia and Kraftwerk. Side one consists primarily of short, direct avant-pop song-fragments while side two consists of longer, mostly instrumental tracks. Retrospectively, Low has received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of Bowie's best works. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic writes that with the album, Bowie "confirmed his place at rock's cutting edge". Considering it "dense [and] challenging", Erlewine concludes "the record is defiantly experimental and dense with detail, providing a new direction for the avant-garde in rock & roll."
I can appreciate the talent, not into the apparent experimentation that was this album
Ok, but that’s all.
Not just sound and vision....but you'd wish it was
Yeah nah. I prefer my Bowie with vocals, thanks.
false
Not a big fan. Just weird stuff.
Aburridon
2.5
Not as terrible as I find most Bowie to be. This might be because there isn't much of his vocal happening throughout this album. I'm very biased against that voice, no matter how many chances I give it, it pains me to hear him. There's some nice musical fiddling about going on here though.
Not really my preference.
I love David Bowie but there are better albums by him!
för knepigt för mig.
Alko lupaavasti, mutta lopun trippailu lässäytti levyn
Over 1,000 albums in the collection, yet I get 2 Bowie albums within the first 10 - what are the odds? This album is a DUD! 1 star is generous - not sure why this is on the list even… would not listen again it is so bad!!!
WTF is dis shit
Turns out ambient avant-garde is not for me.
I will never be full on Bowie fan. An artistic genius, but he’s not my cup of tea. Hopefully this is the last Bowie album on the list. 😭
Not for me
i am starting to think i am the problem i am not a fan of any of these songs ngl they sound and feel too old for me ig ? i have nothing against old songs but i just dont think i will ever listen to these songs ever day 3 !
Not for me
I don’t like David Bowie. This is the 3rd album and all I have to say is WTF
very good. some good songs but not entirely my style. would like to know them by hard to get to sing them
They told me "once you're gonna learn to love Bowie", that was in 25yrs... Still nope
Nul a chier c'est un pointeur
Another weird album didn't enjoy this one much i would rate it generous 2.7/10 just cause its experiment and the one with futuristic sound that was great intro overall i would not that great of an album
Meh
Not for me. 1/5
this album was so ass i couldn’t even finish the last 2 songs
Awful
I think this is the third Bowie album that's come up and by far my least favorite. Feels like a movie score to a movie I haven't seen. I guess you get to a certain level and you can experiment as much as you want but this one doesn't do it for me
The back was actually ok but the voice just isnt enought, and all around boring
seran muy buenas melodias bla bla bla, yo necesito letras acompañda a la musica perdon david bowie canta la proxima
