I know this album was ahead of its time but I don’t really feel it. For me it’s a bit too experimental and spacy. Don’t get me wrong, everything Bowie did was somehow great but I rather stick to his pop stuff.

Not too interesting - but not blatantly obnoxious - no real desire to listen to again

this album is completely different from david bowie's biggest hits and the albums i've heard of his thus far on this list. bowie leans into an experimental electronic sound here. while he had always gravitated into a different/unusual sort of sound, the music found on low is nowhere near his usual glam rock. in addition, a good chunk of these songs are simply instrumentals. to be honest, what bowie excelled at here was the instrumentals! the songs containing lyrics were okay but forgettable. the instrumentals are a weird mix of eerie and serene. a little space age-y. it keeps you on your toes. i admire artists who over their careers frequently changed their sound and played around with different kinds of music, good or bad. bowie's low landed in the good category. i was surprised by the change in sound with this album--and i enjoy it more than other bowie albums. i kind of wish there were no vocals, especially since the instrumentals are so impactful on their own. still a 3, though.

More interesting than good? Feels like Bowie is finding his way into something new that doesn’t get fully realized until Toy.

Not bad! Nothing that really drew me in or stuck with me but also nothing that got on my nerves. I doubt I'll revist this but I'm less dubious about listening to more Bowie after this experience so a win?

Sound and Vision is one of his best! Most of the rest of this one is new to me. Warszawa has a definite Brian Eno feel to it. More than another of the other songs on the Album. Standouts: Sound and Vision Others: Speed of Life, Always Crashing the Same Car, Warszawa Rating: 3.5

Pretty good but not something I would get sick in my head

Good first half. Awful second half. Yeah Bowie was influenced by the Eno ambient stuff (which I've already gotten a bunch of) but that doesn't make it good. Only interesting thing I can say is that I biked by Hansa studio for over a year before learning that I was.

Not my favorite Bowie. I like a more focused Bowie. I like a poppier Bowie. A less Eno Bowie? I appreciate Eno being Eno and taking us places we otherwise might not go, but still. Not my favorite Bowie.

It was interesting, early electronic ambient music. Sound and vision was the best track. I can hear many later works in this album, and it was definitely an influence on other artists.

This is our 188th album, the fifth Bowie album we've gotten, and the second in three days. No disrespect, but I'm ready for a break (or should I say "ch-ch-ch-ch-changes?"). STILL haven't gotten an AC/DC album. Or any of the Jacksons. Or Weird Al (he better be on this list). Or Prince! C'mon, algorithm. Hook a honky up with some different all-time greats.

I will have to majorly disagree with BUBS, someone I thought I knew and loved. After reading his review, I don’t know who he is anymore. Did we listen to different albums?? I thought this was a great album. Jacob and I listened to it on his car speakers on the freezing Ohio roads. I thought it was a jam! There were songs that felt like a Berstein soundtrack—so beautiful. The instrumentals were pretty. Not a lot of vocals to go on. I’d listen again! 3/5.

First half is pretty good; it's fun and bouncy. Second half gets pretty spacey and drawn out. An experimental record with hits and misses.

3.5 Some good songs, end of the album too ambient for me

For me this album has always been overrated, I've listen to numerous times and my only conclusion is if it wasn't a David Bowie album then no one would care. It's not a bad album but it's not groundbreaking either. I think Kraftwork or Eno works is more interesting.

Not the Bowie I personally prefer musically, but an interesting enough record. Even the instrumental tracks held my attention.

A solid listen till about track 8 when the more experimental and ambient stuff kicks in.

The A side was a complete throwaway for me, but the B side was decently redemptive. No idea what Bowie was trying to do, some sort of space spiritual mumbo-jumbo I imagine, but it sounded pretty good. Makes sense as this was a sort of a post-drug redemption arc point of Bowie's career. 3 sets of prayer beads out of 5 📿📿📿

Two Bowie albums in two days, after Blackstar yesterday. I'm really not a fan, but whilst this album was a lot less modern sounding than the aforementioned, it was better than some of the other Bowie albums I've already had.

Interesting and not what I expected. Mostly instrumental. Apparently he was inspired by Kraftwerk. Much better than Kraftwerk.

It's fine. I do like a lot of David Bowie, but this one isn't hitting for me. I think I appreciate the fact that he did a weird musical half more than I like the weird musical half.

Nice to have another bowie album. Still hasn't changed my opinion on him, which is one of distant positivity. I enjoyed this album but like every other album this week, nothing really sticking out to make it more than a 3.

"One’s initial reaction is: “Oh look another overrated Bowie record. Can't have enough of those in this list, now can we?” This is definitely not terrible, but also neither life-changing nor even all that interesting. On a second listen, that reaction is more or less confirmed. Sure, there’s some edgy textures, but the production is alternately muddy and tinny. Man, are those some cheesy synths on “Speed of Life.” There’s much that’s derivative (typical Bowie), always aiming to sound like something (or someone) else, in this case Kraftwerk. The slightly-ahead-of-its-time sonic factor and the substantial coolness of ""Sound and Vision,” “Be My Wife” and “A New Career in a New Town” (the last being the best thing on the record) can’t make up for the wholly contrived feel of this thing (again, typical Bowie). Then there’s the standard (speaking of tinny) Tin Machine penalty that must be retroactively assigned to every Bowie record. The last four wordless, ambient tracks are okay, semi-interesting experimentation and noodling, but a bit too synthetic. One wants to ask why they aren’t credited to Eno. And just because Joy Division were inspired to choose their original name from the lugubrious “Warszawa” doesn’t make it great or memorable (or any less turgid for that matter). They get pretty ponderous pretty quickly, sounding more like Muzak of slightly-above-average artiness, what the mid-70s thought the future would sound like (mid-’70s were mostly wrong, it would seem). This is a 3.4 (rounding down because of overexposure) – in no way imperative to hear or essential (more like tangential) to a life’s listening.

Was not my favorite. Very weird psychedelic. Not many lyrics. Music is impressive bot not necessarily my preference on what to listen too. Not a huge fan of his voice either.

This is not Bowie's best outing, but a good album nonetheless. The songs are OK, and when I am in the mood I quite like the instrumental pieces. 3/5

I’m sure there will be David Bowie albums here that are a 4 or 5… this just wasn’t one of them. Prefer something more lyrics forward from him.

I like Bowie as much as the average person but never really found myself putting on Bowie albums in their entirety—more sprinkling songs in mixes. There are some standout tracks on this album (Sound and Vision, for example). Despite a couple of snoozers, overall I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the album.

First half and second half of this album are both phenomenal- but feel like separate albums from each other?

An album of two halves. Side 1 comprises some 'proper' songs (including 'Sound and Vision' - possibly my favourite Bowie song), whilst Side 2 comprises experimental soundscapes with sparse vocals and electronic elements. Whilst some of the other Bowie albums have disappointed beyond the famous singles, this avoids a similar fate by placing the emphasis on the experimental elements - it is the handful of 'normal' songs that appear more out of place. The only problem is that what was innovative in 1977 can now sound a bit dated in 2022. Overall, I quite liked this, but it didn't blow me away. It's appearing more and more as if Bowie may be primarily a great singles artist. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Sound and Vision Date listened: 29/08/22

highlights: - art decade

A decent album, but not Bowie's best. The front half is fairly weak as far as Bowie's songwriting goes. The back half includes some fun ambient tracks that would be nice to chill out and vibe to while high as hell. Maybe will revisit it at some point in the future. Right now I feel it is a 3 star album, mostly because of the quality of his other work.

Ponerle menos de 4 estrellas a un disco de Bowie es una impopular opinion, pero esa es mi conclusión para este disco. No es malo para nada, pero que lo más sobresaliente sea ‘Sound and Vision’ deja ver que el resto es poco poderoso en comparación a otros discos. Me da risa que la descripción en Wiki empieza contando que Bowie tenía un problema de drogas y para resolverlo se fue a vivir con Iggy Pop. Meh. I could have lived without this one. It just wasn't really my thing. Pretty sparse on vocals and that's my favorite part of Bowie songs, so...eh. it was fine. Bowie's meh is still a lot of people's best, so naturally this still gets 3 stars for effort. Fave track: speed of life. What a bop. Wish I'd liked the rest of the album as much. Fave track:

It’s ok. I think there is better Bowie available.

From the get go the sound of this album let’s you know that it’s pushing the boundaries. I’ve never heard anything like Speed Of Life with the harmonizer creating an industrial electronic high pitched sound. One of my favorite aspects of the album is the prominent bass guitar. It is in the driver’s seat for several songs, like Breaking Glass & Sound and Vision. The video game like feel to What In The World is fun. I have two main issues with this album. First, too many of the songs feel short and unfinished. It feels like the full concept for each song was not fleshed out. Second, the back half of the album is mostly instrumental, which I enjoy here by the way, but it feels like a different album. It’s the Brian Eno effect. The two halves do not go together for me. This album is exciting. I listened to it several times. The sound is incredibly interesting. And yet because of that excitement, the album also incredibly disappointing due to its incompleteness and change in style.

I first heard this over 15 years after it was released. Didn’t much enjoy the lauded second side. Still love Be My Wife. Every time I revisit it grows on me more. This time it’s clear that my problem is that all the new music since 1977 has probably been informed by this LP, so it doesn’t sound new or innovative to me. However, we do now know that it was thoroughly new music at the time of recording. The synths, the drum effect, mixing more conventionally crafted songs on one side and instrumental textures on the other. Yes, it’s really influential and boundary-pushing and side one keeps up with the better mid 70s Bowie material. Not quite good enough for 4*

It's very interesting to know a little bit more of this so famous "Berlin phase" of Bowie. Actually, I didn't enjoy it too much, however, it's impossible not to note how it influenced modern songs after it.

Love his voice, which makes me wish there was more of it on this album as there were a lot of instrumental songs. No song particularly stood out as one that I'll go back to again but I enjoyed listening the whole time!

I love David Bowie but don’t like post-punk, so maybe that explains why I never truly liked this album. Maybe I liked his music better when he was on heroin, I don’t know.

Nous le retrouvions par exemple il y a quelque jours au Panama pour l'ecoute de Willie Colón et Rubén Blades. Aujourd'hui, c'est à Berlin qu'il se trouve. Malgré une empreinte carbone désastreuse, on ne peut que saluer la perseverance et la passion de rob, qui je l'espère, saura trouver grâce auprès de Robert, qui ne lui a toujours pas pardonné l'épisode Kiwanuka.

My stance on this one is the same as for Heroes: I really like the typical David Bowie, but the synth-ambient Bowie just doesn't do it for me. First half 4 stars, second half 2.5 stars.

Good background, probably wouldn’t seek it out on it’s own. Decent within-album variety.

My first time listening to this album and my first impression is squarely on the "meh" side of things. There's something about it, though, that makes me think it becomes better the more you listen to it, so I'm going to give this a slightly higher score than my gut says I should.

Good listen, musically. The album seems incomplete between the short and fading out tracks, general lack of lyrics, and different concepts on each side.

Is this what a concept album is? Kinda weird but not unenjoyable to listen to..

Worth listening to as a whole album. Most tracks are familiar, but together they really feel on that Low feeling. If you are listening to this regularly, you probably need to take up a team sport or something to get you out of the house.

I love the first half of the album with all of it's spiky post punk attitude but the soundscape instrumentals though should be applauded by someone of Bowie's level to try new avant garde ideas, they are just lacking something. Great album with awesome instrumentals, it’s clear this album has tons of artistic merit. As good as it is, I don’t see myself coming back to listen to it for fun very often, but still a good listen.

While this Album still has great innovation and Bowie's mastermind, the end result from a music standpoint is just not my cup of tea

Very interesting - seemingly mostly instrumental (didn't keep track of how much), there's a mix of ambient sounds with straightforward beats. It still sounds like Bowie even without the voice.

Just the right amount of weird for me. I appreciated all the instrumentation, both real (bass lines were rocking through most of the album) and synthentic. Most of the songs were between 2-3 minutes, which I think was perfect - it was just long enough for me to think "hey, this is pretty cool" and then it would end before I got bored. Last few tracks lost me though. In general, I wish I would have heard more of Bowie's voice - most of the time I felt like I was listening to a movie score.

Of course I know David Bowie, but I think every track on this album was new to me. It was different than what I've heard from Bowie before. "Weeping Wall" almost sounds like Prog Rock. I have no idea what "Warszawa" was supposed to be (weird). "Sound and Vision" came up as the favorite from this album, but overall this album gets an official "okay".

I have listened to some Bowie before but I hadn't listened to this particular album. It's a good album but to be honest nothing really special about it at the first listen atleast. For now I would rank it a weak 3.

Is it artsy? Yeah! Is it good? Debatable. I love me some ambient music, but after listening to this I don't really care to hear it on the regular. I think it's a neat album and can see why Bowie fans praise it since it expands his already wide range. It just isn't catchy and isn't memorable. It's cool as hell, but I wouldn't want to purchase it or anything. Sorry you had a bad time, Bowie.

A more mainstream and poppy sound than what I was expecting. The last couple of numbers are more experimental but I enjoyed it all.

Not my favorite Bowie album but I do appreciate its inventiveness and I think if it I wasnt already in love with Bowie's other work I would probably like it more. I knew sound and vision but not any other song. I thought this might be one of the albums he worked with Brian Eno on and I'm right! It's the first one. I believe they used some of Enos Oblique Strategies to develop the songs.

La electrónica que incluye me gusta y está Brian Eno, capaz de lo mejor y de lo otro también. Tiene un aire Talking Heads interesante. Canciones como What in the world o Sound and vision están bien. La cara B del vinilo tiene temas sorprendentes como Warszawa, Art decade o Subterraneans experimentales y más parecidos a New Age o banda sonora que a algo que relacionemos con Bowie.

I don't know much Bowie but I feel like this isn't his best work

Ironically had recently added this to my private list of albums to “check out later”— an ongoing never-finished project- so I was glad to give this one a listen. The beginning of the “Berlin trilogy”, so I added all three incl. Heroes and Lodger. Bowie was newly sober for this record, which makes me think of my own ongoing relationship with substances. It’s forward-sounding, extremely unique stuff clearly influenced by loads of other music. I like this one a lot, 4 stars on its own but 5 in the grander context of these three records

As with most Bowie, I liked it... OK. I actually love his voice, but his music is pretty often on the "too weird to listen to regularly" side. However, I like this better than the Waits album. Still, can't give it 4 stars.

Not really Bowie hits I had heard before, but it had the original sound and vision which I enjoyed since I had only heard the cover. I can definitely hear how this album may have influenced future artists. It definitely has some elements that feel more modern than I might expect from an album from 1977.

Low is certainly a tale of two album sides. For the first 20 minutes I was really digging an electro-pop version of Bowie. Despite a couple of them seeming like unfinished demos or segments of bigger songs I liked the new angle he was taking and Sound And Vision is still a great Bowie hit. As we rolled into side 2 I was unfortunately met with experimental ambient music. Clearly Eno got his hooks in Bowie. Unfortunately it derails what was otherwise a very solid album to that point. The ambient stuff is whatever, and I maybe wouldn't have minded a separate album of it, but it really does make Low seem like it has a personality disorder. I wish I could give this album separate grades but unfortunately one half of it significantly drags down the other half, so it ends up as an overall mediocre album. Would be a good one to play on the brother's record play for Side A though in the future. 1.89 stars

During: ======= Not impressed by the first track. Nor the second... I ended up rating all of them a 3 except for Sound and Vision which got a 4. After : ======= Totally forgettable. However, there were some interesting unexpected instrumental numbers on side two but, all in all, I see no justification for this album being on the list so I'll bump my rating down one notch from 3 to 2. I don't generally modify my personal rating but in this case I think it is warranted.

If Aladdin Sane was a 3, then this has to be a 2 for me. The last 1/3 that just turned into weird orchestral tunes was not my jam

A rare Bowie album that I can somewhat stomach, I suspect largely because of Brian Eno's contributions.

64 albums in and already the 3rd Bowie album first was good, second was ok, but this is pretty crap. I'm worried that they might get worse than this and there is still more to come. I mean half this album is instrumental, and it's not even interesting. I enjoyed a couple of tracks in the middle but the back half is a real chore to get through. A generous 2*

Definitely different, but trying to put it perspective of it's time However, it mostly instrumentals and "jam" sounding at that. This isn't selling me on Bowe. But there could be more there after repeat listens or other albums.

Not feeling this and I don't think it would be on the list without Bowie's name. But I'm not really an electronic Eno guy. A couple of cool tracks, but the rest no thanks.

Never particularly liked his Berlin trilogy of albums. There are highlights on them all (on here its Sound and Vision, Breaking Glass and Always Crashing in the Same Car) but the remainder doesn’t connect or resonate much for me.

Evidence if you ever needed it that great artists can produce less than great works. I’ve never got the love for this release. It’s an album of two distinctive halves bizarrely cobbled together into a singular package. Sound and vision is the standout track for me, and the album finds its feet for a few tunes after that following a tedious start, but there’s little else to get me excited here, and it is, frankly, all bit boring down the finishing straight. A relative “low” in Bowie’s body of work for sure AND despite the heavy dusting of kraftwerk like synth sounds, it wasn’t even recorded in Berlin contrary to the popular mythology!

Better than I remember. It's a lot, but there's some good parts. Second half is bizarre... only the last track stuck with me. BUT I think it was my favourite song on the album. First half was alright and second half wasn't exactly my thing. An interesting experience

Very instrumental focused album didn’t enjoy certain parts and felt very okay about others. Feels like a 2.5/5 to me.

This is Blondie's favorite album. The arcade noises on What in the World are not a welcome addition. They sound like sped up King Hippo noises. Just when I think I'm liking this album more, it has a track like Warszawa and I feel differently. I get the video game noises now. Art Decade could be the score for Final Fantasy VIII. These mostly instrumental sides on Heroes and Low just aren't great. The whole second side is like an emo video game soundtrack.

I liked this less than the David Bowie album from two days ago.

Had some decent tunes but the last few really dragged and brought down my overall opinion of the album.

Just because Bowie is an icon, doesn't mean everything he touches is gold. Half-written songs and snippets of lyrics in the first half, turgid ambient soundscapes in the second half. They're only on there because he'd already written a movie soundtrack and couldn't bear to throw it away. Rubbish. The thin white emperor isn't wearing any clothes

So very 80s... But it was 1976. So ahead of his time.i imagine this didn't set the world on fire when it dropped but picked up steam over the years. Apart from that though there isn't really a lot of substance here. There are better Bowie albums, I assume they will all show up here eventually. Curator must be a Bowie fan. I wonder who missed out so this could be included.

There are many David Bowie albums on this list. Many of them are deservingly so, but for 'Low' it feels to me as if this list could have done without it. There is just too little on this album which is standing out. Tomorrow pretty much all of this album will be forgotten. 'Sound and Vision' is the most famous track on this album and the most memorable one. In addition to that one there is not a lot here. 2/5

I guess I just don’t get it.

I guess I never realized how much of Montreal ripped off early Bowie.

Real sci-fi, space feeling music. Lots of songs without lyrics. Surprised me that Jez may be fond of this album, wouldn’t expect it from him.

Not terrible. A couple songs that weren’t bad but overall a bit inconsistent.

I just realized that this is the EIGHTH Bowie album I've gotten here. Already, I can tell that this wasn't one of his most commercial albums, despite being the start of his "Berlin Trilogy" in which tony Visconti and Brian Eno came together to help collaborate. That should pretty much tell you the story here. This is a very artsy and more electronic album that sort of zips by in the first half, then takes strange directions and opts for more melancholic ambience in the second half. Vocally, this is the least present Bowie has ever been on one of his own albums. That honestly soured me a bit. Bowie's vocal presence is what captivates us, not a bunch of moody synthesizers. The instrumentals were fine, don't get me wrong, but this was hardly a Bowie album in my eyes (despite his instrumental presence in the latter half). Can't help but be overly critical here.

Influential electro-rock album, but didn’t hit the sweet spot for me. I am again guilty of not having the best audio set-up, but still, this album felt very meandering and random to me. I’m a David Bowie fan, but this one just felt quite random and disjointed, and I couldn’t settle into its mood. Not my cup of tea

An interesting concept for this album with the back half being so abstract. I didn’t particularly enjoy that though.

I think Davids later stuff was a lot better most of this is just ambient sounds and for the 70s it was fine but it aged like milk.

Entry #4 from David Bowie (not to mention the Iggy Pop ones). All these songs are new to me. The first part of the album includes standard rock songs, and the last part includes instrumental/electronica music, which would be perfect for a museum or planetarium. I enjoyed the planetarium music more than the rock tunes, but none of it is memorable.

I didn't get it....

Except for Sound and Vision, doesn't do anything for me. It was experimental, and I guess he liked the results, because he did the same thing on Heroes.

This album lost me on a wave of phase. Not sure why this is thought to be the first time any of the sounds were heard on an album. Countless UK prog bands were experimenting with various early synths, Be Bop Deluxe used phasers on guitar. Don't get the praise for what is to me maybe experimental for Bowie, but not for the general music of that era. Not an unlistenable album, but way overrated by some, as is most of Bowies work.
