I have never heard this album or these songs before. I thought it was really good and quite different from a lot of his other stuff. I was a little less fond of the instrumentals as they went on a bit. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Sound and Vision Rating: 4

While a fan of Bowie, I've never given this album much attention. I like this era of Bowie - songs are characteristic of the ones you hear on the Bowie at the Beeb recordings. Seems like there are a few instrumentals on here or at least songs with very little singing, which I find rare with Bowie albums. Glad to have 'discovered' a Bowie album this late in the game.

Never been a huge fan of ambient electronic music so I really struggled with this. Could not get into it but would accept that does not make it a bad album. Just not for me

Didn't we do this with Heroes already? The thing were the songs suddenly transition into ambient music? (I know it was Side 2 of the LP, but I still don't quite get it.) Having listened to about 11 David Bowie albums in this project so far, this one doesn't stand out for me at all, Side One or Side Two.

Okay, it starts more or less with a David Bowie sound, although not specifically anything that I know. Then later I’m wondering if I’ve somehow wondered off-track. Not that it was bad, but I just wasn’t sure that I was still on the album. At some moments a 4 and others a 3…

Seeing another David Bowie record, I always assume I'll know at least a few songs. The only song I recognized on this one was Sound and Vision, which I gotta say isn't one of my favorites. While Side A was just fine, I really got into Side B with its moody atmosphere and limited vocals.

I got into David Bowie in his later years, so I'm only familiar with the bigger hits of his earlier work. I'm sure glad he went to France to kick the drugs because this is a fantastic album! Certainly a contender for my favorite Bowie album!

Classic early Bowie. Probably wouldn't listen to it very often.

I LOVEE BOWIE. Though I haven't listened to an album fully I always liked his style, sadly or not I know only sound and vision from this album and even that is from 2017 remaster, I'm gonna try the 1999(this) remaster, because it might sound better, I will maybe listen to the 2017 one to compare idk. First song, loud and fast paced start with the instruments. It is progressing, and I'm loving that. I like the unique melody he creates here. I think it's the interlude intro so, that is just repeating over and over, until it progresses. Is there a transition? This was quite nice, I hope that it's not mostly instrumental, but I don't mind that either. Second song, short it is. I like his voice here, it's raspy(?). The lyrical delivery is fun too. The instruments are in great fusion, guitar on the left and drums on the right, I think. Third song, finally a full song. Ohhh I love his voice here. It's chaotic with the guitar, and some instrument on the right. It's so fast, it's already a instrumental break, ohh I loved that guitar slamming. It's going veeery good. It's fun, I suppose catchy too. Next ones better be better than this. 4th song, not much lyrics here, but the song is 3 minutes, which is the longest he has done here for now. Pardon me, he moaned rn, he did it again. The "doo doo"s came in. Ohh he has a deep voice now. I love that sound in the left side, it sounds like fire burnt out, but repeating that sound once in a while, that's the best part here. OMG I'M SO DUMB, THIS IS THE SONG I KNOW, I haven't listened to it for a long time I forgot, and I was too caught up writing here to realise what I was listening too, well definitely good it was. 5th song, this one's more glam rock. It's progressive a little. The instrumental break is faster than the way he said lyrics before it. The drum beat is basic, but catchy. It's mostly guitar here, but it's vibey. The outros here were, as usual, the songs slowly fading. 6th song, oooh a little faster this one is. The pre chorus is catchy, nvm THE chorus is catchier, or is it verse, I'm confused, but I know that I mean so. Half the song is instrumental I think. It ended on the best lyrical delivery, I wish that continued. 7th song, spooky and downtempo start. It got progressive and now many instruments create an ordered chaos, I hear Bob Dylan's magic instrument here(flute(?)). Now it's only beat, with some violin like sound. And the chaos comes back again, it's giving western, but if it was a happy place. This song has the best instrumentals in my opinion, it was funky, fun, kind of ghostly too at the start. 8th song, ohhh 6 minutes, and it's instrumental choir rn. There is a weird alien like sound of an instrument. It's getting vikingy. Violin came in, nice touch, love that. It's spooky and a veery fascinating intro, wonder how he says the lyrics. It's permanent wave now, but I still like that longness, it's melancholic too, there could be a meaning behind this, but lazy to check it. Ohh the lion king scar sounds. Then he sang in a different language operatically. Now a woman voice, a vocalist she is, and from some culture I don't recognise, it's gypsy vibes low key. The growling voice was fantastic. Now they're gone and back to melancholia. Felt like a movie scene, after some dramatic thing happened. Impressive I'd say at the end. 9th song, weird space like sounds, I do love those. What is this instrument, also the constant beat that thing is making in the background. Mischievous vibes, but also not, because it's quite slow and not that villainy. Another constant sound came in, it progressed, it got downtempo and isn't the main attraction anymore. Pink Floyd vibes, if only it was a transition too. 10th song, it's an instrumental, I do wonder that the original song is with lyrics, because I LOVEE THE INSTRUMENTAL FUSION HERE, it's kinda giving Björk. Fully different sounds this one has, it's childish in the best way possible. The constant beat that I hear from right and left are perfect. Operatic vocals came in, and it's folky now, whistle sound has been going on for a looong time now. This just seems artistic, idk in what way though. Pluss it's quite unique with the flow of the sounds. 11th song, the vibe is veery different from what is was before, which was rock and roll mostly, now it feels like another album. This one's long too. The mentioned lion king scar voice returned in an opera way. Ohh the jazz I hear now, why would he do that only now. This is, not as a degradation, a background music, I would use for when I'm doing something that needs concentrating yk. The lyrics came in, and it's very folky and vikingy, if only there was this constant growl, then that would be more like it, but this is more Bowie cored. Outro is jazz mostly, nevermind Scar came back. I'm very confused, I didn't expect this from Bowie, the too much monotonousness, though I was gonna rate this 4 stars, since it's Bowie, and I love her, I'm gonna be subjective and give him 5 stars. I'm sure there'll be other albums of him here, can't wait for that.

Hell yeah, I love this album. "Sound and Vision" is one of my favorite Bowie songs. This is the first of the Berlin trilogy, and like the sequel, "Heroes", it is divided into an a-side of art rock singles and a b side of instrumental pieces. I like this album better than "Heroes" (which is still great) the a-side is more consistent and the b-side is more cohesive. It was interesting to read the background on Wikipedia- particularly about the production effects used on the drums that became highly influential to music in the following decade.

I'm not a huge Bowie fan, and expected to go 2/5. But, I really liked the instrumental and experimental aspects of this. Some songs were actually in my tastes.

something i'd listen to on a speeding car to nowhere. this feels like the part of youth i had never experienced--the yearning to see the world and only getting disappointed after the exploration. the instruments on this album SLAP. it's GREAT

I've been enjoying this. A first time hearing this album. Started with some fairly straight forward Bowie pop tunes, but then migrated to instrumental tracks and synth ambient. Mellow.

Almost feels like I need to give this two different reviews. The A and B side are vastly different, with the A side typical Bowie rock and the B-side an avant garde mini-album. Very interesting as a whole.

David Bowie is proving that I might not hate electric synthy rock like I thought I did. Low is so sparse. Side 1 is very German synth rock, abusive, industrial almost, clearly a big influence Trent Raznor. Side 2 is a dreamy soundscape, a soundtrack to a post apocalyptic movie. 8.7/10

Two David Bowie in a row lol. I knew nothing of this album before listening. It's by far the most interesting Bowie album I've heard yet. Very atmospheric, some great tracks. Is it Ziggy stardust? Probably not but I really enjoyed it

I like David Bowie but not a fan of his only instrumental songs

Listening to this coincided on going to what I knew was a sure thing breakup. The sounds just hit perfectly for what I was feeling at the time. I can’t stress how much I love David Bowie.

Admittedly, never listened to much David Bowie growing up - this was my entry point. And holy shit, dude, I was missing out.

This is music for aliens. No doubt about it. There is a lot of genius here, but it's too extraterrestrial for me. If I came from the planet this originated from I'd probably give it 5 stars.

Classic DB album fro the Berlin/Eno trilogy. It oozes class even though the record company initially hated it. A couple of the 2nd side mood pieces sag a bit. 4.2

One of the first albums I listened to when I was doing one-a-days before this 1,001 albums program started. This was fine, and I appreciate its historical significance for Bowie and the era it came out in (disco, early new wave), but this is all just OK for me. I like early Bowie better.

During Summer of Bowie two years ago, I tried to listen to every album 2-3 times. This one was not my favorite. But today I liked it a little more. Perhaps with each revisit it will grow on me a little more. The second half doesn’t do it for me … yet.

Min favorit låt från albumet var Be My Wife.

Second David Bowie album I’ve heard this week, he’s just not my cuppa

The first side is brilliant, angular, funky and intelligent. Breaking Glass, Sound And Vision and Always Crashing are superb. The second side I appreciate more now that I’m older. I always found the Berlin stuff a bit too chilly and detached when I was younger, but this has grown on me over the years, now I think it’s a clever evocation of a strange time and place. It’s still not my favourite Bowie album, but it could be in a few years at this rate.

Low Don’t look at the carpet, I drew something awful on it. This is top 3 Bowie for me, it’s often my favourite but even if not no 1 at any particular time, t’s always up there. The first side’s songs are all among my favourite Bowie songs, Speed of Life, What in the World, Sound & Vision, Always Crashing in the Same Car, Be my Wife. I love the band and the playing, the arrangements, the instrumentation and I love the sound of the drums and the bass. I also love side 2. In most people hands a side of ambient music could be truly appalling, but this is is great, moody, atmospheric, occasionally sinister but never dull or ponderous. Knowing a bit about the inspiration for the 2nd side does help, but it really does evoke what I imagine 70s East and West Berlin to be like. And the two sides complement and work along side each other, the slightly on edge ‘pop’ songs followed by the comedown and sadness of the 2nd side. It’s a masterpiece, would be a six if I could, but of course it’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn’t get through all of the songs. I never did follow David Bowie so it was a challenge to stick with it but overall I didn’t mind what I heard.

I had no idea this David Bowie record existed. It's whacky and experimental. It's pretty fun but I feel that the instrumentals get a bit repetitive sometimes. The synth sounds were a fun addition and added some depth though. The second half of the album has some pretty cool and unexpected instrumental songs.

I've always been a Bowie fan, but I can't figure out why this album is on the list. It's good, and interesting. However, the songs don't catch me like some of the earlier (and even later) Bowie songs do. My best guess is that the experimental elements and bits seem elemental for future music? Anyway, its fine. I probably won't revisit.

Experimental Bowie is not my happy place

It only gets this high a rating because I could listen to the last four tracks forever. The rest of it is completely ignorable. I think if someone else made this, some rando instead of Bowie, it doesn’t get listed here.

I've always liked Bowie the person more than his music, something about his Art pop just doesn't land with me all the time. This album is definitely in that same camp. Some fun songs, but its all very experimental and not cohesive for me. It feels like he made it for himself rather than his audience, which is fine but I didn't love it.

I wonder what he drew on the carpet. Haven't I had sound and vision on a different album already? Like an 80s soundtrack. Ahead of it's time then I guess. Can appreciate potential for influencing.

This is one of his best. The audio work was game changing when this one first came out and is still so unique. Listen to this one a few times a year.

Good album cover. First time hearing this album. The mixing is great, even on a track like What in the World that is more chaotic you can hear everything. Sound here is kind of timeless, on the ground floor of a sound style that kept growing. The music on Be My Wife rocks me. Nice harmonica on A New Career In A New Town. The more instrumental stuff is so cinematic. Warszawa, Art Decade, Weeping Wall and Subterraneans got me daydreaming of art by Moebius Great album overall.

Bought this album a long time ago, lured in by Breaking Glass then expanding into the rest of the playlist! And of course - Sound and Vision.

I would listen to album again when I want something different.

Starts of strong with some good riffs and melodies but then strays into a spacey instrumental focus in the second half of the album that I wasn't a big fan of.

I don’t think this is Bowie at his best. In fact, this was written at a time he and Iggy Pop were trying to turn their lives around from being hooked on drugs, so yeah this isn’t the sort of Bowie I had hoped to hear. That said I really liked Subterraneans, a track that was meant for Bowie’s soundtrack to The Man Who Fell To Earth before he pulled out from doing the soundtrack.

I really liked ‘Sound and Vision’ so was excited to hear this album. Wrong. Rubbish.

Fascinating! I've never delved into Bowie too deeply, but I always wanted to. I'm glad I'm doing this 1001 thing for reasons like this. The chameleon of the music world reinvents himself as a Krautrocker, you can hear the German influences throughout this, as well as very 'Eno' ambient and experimental production. When they said they were hesitant to release this due to its potential uncommerciality, I get it - that is what makes this very good from my perspective, an established star who wants to do his own thing is always a good sign. It will certainly be getting another listen soon. A 'low' 3.

Surprised by this one. Other Bowie records I've tried have mostly felt like "the hits and a bunch of other shit". Reminded me of Teenager of the Year somehow. Similar synth sounds maybe.

Song: Sound and Vision David Bowie never really misses—I don't usually seek out his music, but I'm never upset to hear it. This was a solid track with a good groove and a cool, funky instrumental. I like Bowie's low register a lot, too, it sounds great. All in all, this was a good song that I'd listen to again.

A different take by Bowie for his eleventh studio album. There are not too many stand outs, but it is a very different sound more haunting and influenced by Bowie's heavy drug use and German inspired krautrock blending electronic elements with rock and avant-garde themes. Best: Sound and Vision Worst: Art Decade

This album is very different from other David Bowie albums I've listened to. Seems to me like he did some experimenting in the recording of this album. I get a futuristic vibe. Overall, not a bad album.

It started off well....but I was not a fan of the last few experimentally, new age-y instrumental tracks. First half of the album, even though the instrumental tracks were a bit repetitive I liked the sound Bowie created and the instrumentation he chose. But he lost me by the end so the album didn't end on a good note for me. First half 3.5 stars, second half 1.5 stars, total 2.5 stars but can't give half stars so 2.

Classic, iconic Bowie!

Quirky. Lots of experimental sounds on a rock foundation. Sound and Vision instrumental is niiiice. The latter half could be a Zelda soundtrack. I like the record but don’t know a playlist I would add them to. Enjoying the back half the most. This sounds like it could be the starting point for many bands and genres; this is the oldest album I’ve heard these sounds in. I’d wager this album was a major influence in the entire 80’s sound. Had a very specific aesthetic to it. I anticipate this will get better with each listen. Subterraneans is incredible.

I remember lying in the dark with my turntable and three foot speakers. This album was a beautiful journey every time.

As with many Bowie albums, this is otherworldly, experiemental and unique while remaining catchy and filled with pop melodies. This album has a haunting, cold edge to it which I've always found fascinating. It also clearly had a huge influence on the wave of post-punk which was to follow. Incredible production, songwriting and instrumentaiton all round. It's a masterpiece.

Love David Bowie

While I’m not an ambient fan, my favorite ambient songs are on Low. The first half is flawless. Since I’m not always in the mood for ambience I’m tempted to go 4 stars, but that first half is just too good to deny.

Much more atmospheric than I was expecting. Enjoyed it! Good to hear saxophones, add to the chill feel.

Possibly includes my favourite (or close to) Bowie song in Sound and Vision, one of the most excellent songs to strut to and a track that floats absently into my head during quiet, positive moments. The rest is all very well although descends into proggy cul-de-sacs for limited purpose in my view. Still, generally fine but not as groundbreaking as it clearly wants to be during those moments. Almost gets a five for Sound and Vision alone but I will restrain myself this once

I was very optimistic going into this album as someone who’s grown up with parents who are fans of David Bowie and of course how widely acclaimed an artist he is, it seemed impossible that I would get nothing from this album, so what was even better was that I got a lot more than nothing from this album. I always recognised Bowie as a rock and roll superstar but I never realised how much art/glam rock was incorporated into his music and how incredibly forward thinking his music is. This is instantly shown through the opening track “Speed of Life” which is covered in piano synths and slick guitar riffs, a very solid opener to really set the tone of the album. “Breaking Glass” follows as a groovy rock and roll track which I can only say I wish was way longer than it is cause it’s so damn good. Other songs I have to mention in the first half of the track listing are “Sound and Vision” which has a lovely laid back instrumental with some beautiful orchestral synths mixed in, it’s a fantastic track, and not to mention “Be My Wife” who’s piano led instrumental and ripping guitar in the background makes it nothing less than a banger. Now what really surprised me was the 2nd half of the album is mainly filled with instrumentals but I can’t say there is a dip in quality at all, “Warszawa” being one of my favourites, sounding like it’s just been lifted from an early era sci-fi movie it really takes the album deeper into space. Finally, the gorgeous closer that is “Subterraneans” gives a very similar feel with some great brass accompaniment. The only song I wasn’t a big fan of was “What in the World” with its quite muddled and glitchy instrumental however it’s a small blip in this grand feeling album. I was initially going to give this album a 3 or 4 on first listen but as I kept going back to listen I realised I must’ve heard the album 3/4 times in the past couple of hours and that’s when I knew that I really enjoyed a massive portion of this album and that I appreciated the sound it achieves. In my eyes it would be disrespectful to call Bowie anything less than an icon and I believe this album can only support that statement. 5/5

Not a Bowie album I know well. I only know Sound and Vision coming into the listen. Standouts: Sound and Vision, Breaking Glass, 3.5

Het klinkt allemaal nogal spacy deze keer, vooral plaatkant B. Heeft David een keyboard gekocht en vervolgens een boel Vangelis geluisterd? O wacht, slaapliedjesgrossier Brian Eno heeft meegedaan, vandaar. Kant A heeft wat meer pit, en het geheel is allemaal best relaxt.

De eerste helft gaat wat ongemerkt voorbij. Na afloop van het album zet ik het nog maar eens op. Geen slechte muziek. Maar twee keer blijkt teveel en na een paar nummers moet het echt uit. Het tweede deel is meer elektronische filmmuziek en minder Bowie-zang. Het heeft vast een basis gelegd voor veel ambient-artiesten. Hier komen we wederom op het trilemma. Raten we kwaliteit, historische waarde of smaak? Mijn smaak is het niet, maar een krappe voldoende kan ik hiervoor nog wel toedelen.

Ik heb dus het boekje "Berlijn"van Don Leo Blokhuis en daarin beschrijft hij de muziek door de jaren heen, die uit Berlijn kwam of daar door geinspireerd werd. Zo ook Bowie en dit album is het eerste van Bowie's Berlijntrilogie. Ik heb deze plaat destijds ook al geluisterd en ik snap waar het door geinspireerd is. Hij experimenteert er vrolijk op los, een rode draad in Bowies oeuvre wel. Deel 1 heeft nog wel liedjes, die niet zozeer hitgevoelig zijn, maar meer interessant om te luisteren. Deel 2 is volledig elektronisch, waarbij een naam als Kraftwerk al snel valt. Ik snap dat daar fans voor zijn en in een gekke bui wil ik het af en toe waarderen, maar 9 vd 10 keer skip ik dat soort muziek.

this album is a following to bowie's invention of the 80s on the previous heroes and station to station, although he was not aware, (i think) he was creating the next decade sound with his crazyness. because of this berlin era, bands like the talking heads appeared and consequently influenced the 80s to become what it is. a shame some bands of the decade ruined it, because this late 70s sound of bowie's is awesome. not a big fan of the instrumental tracks because c'mon its david motherfucking bowie, i want to hear what he has to say with his weird alien voice. but they still manage to be interesting. its an easy 5 to me, as any bowie album will be.

I really enjoyed the start of this, but by the end I was starting to get very bored. It was fantastic and a vibe all the way through, but only side one brought excitement. It’s not for me, but I still understand it’s a great project. 4/5

Wow, this took a left turn I didn't expect. After the first few tracks I was already mentally assembling my comments about how Bowie is a great singles artist, but maybe his albums are overrated, but the second half of this album flipped that narrative completely for me. Some tracks like Warszawa and Art Decade I thought were really beautiful in a way I've not heard from this era of Bowie before. If you played me the intro to Weeping Wall by itself and asked me to guess the artist I'd never get to Bowie. Subterraneans sounds like a The Comet is Coming song, I'm just flabbergasted that this is a DB album. I love that there are fully instrumental tracks here, even though at times they feel like they could be enhanced even further with Bowie's voice on top. Still, I liked this a lot, particularly the second half. 4.3/5

david bowie is certainly a pioneer when it comes to his gritty and sometimes spacey rock tracks, and i definitely think he's up there with one of the greats. however as innovative and as probably influential this album is, it's not as good as i thought it would be. the first tracks had a promising start with more of the rock flavorings, but the second half of otherworldly ambience is... i mean i suppose it's nice, but really it's nothing too worth of note i feel like. and it's a real shame.

Can definitely hear the Eno influences. Fine as background music, but nowhere near the level of classic Bowie and I don't see me going out of my way to listen to it.

Too much Brian Eno, not enough David Bowie.

"Low" represents a shift in David Bowie's life and musicality. Away from drugs, this album presents itself as a reinvention of the man and his music. Since listening on Spotify deprives the listener of the differences between Side A and Side B, it should be noted that the later half of the album is mostly instrumental and a far departure from the previous albums. This album relies heavily on electronics.

I have this on vinyl so got to spin it instead of streaming. First half is great Bowie pop but the second half is what makes it unique. Some very long synth soundscapes with very minimal vocals. Not the most listened to Bowie in my collection...but I always forget how much I love to get lost in the sounds on this one

'Low' may be the most striking of all of Bowie's transformations. He'd already managed to move effortlessly from glam rock to plastic soul, which was a commercial success but drove him into a coccaine-fueled frenzy. To escape both addiction and fame, he took Iggy Pop and Brian Eno to Berlin. Bowie and Eno were heavily influenced by Krautrock artists, as well as Eno's own ambient style for the start of this incredible era. Combined with the paranoia of a divided Berlin, there was really nothing quite like this album before. His record label refused to release it for 3 months for fear of failure. 'Low' has gone on to be massively influential for post-punk, industrial and synth pop artists in particular. It's not everyone's taste but for many, this is will always be Bowie's masterpiece.

Idk what I'm missing, but I find this quite boring. I just don't know what the hype is all about. The production is nice and the instrumentals are good. But overall, I didn't enjoy it as much as others.

Didn't like it very much. Too dreamy

Liked it more than I presumed considering its moody, avant-garde aesthetic. Nice blend of the synthetic, technical vibe of a Kraftwerk combined with the sonically manipulated humanity of Bowie. Need more than a casual listen. Feel like this project being a daily review flows to fast for such an album which needs digging into if it’s not a familiar genre. But enjoyed it enough that it’s worth coming back to.

There are so many great songs by David Bowie. Just this album doesn't show it.

Some songs I like others just not my type.

okay so i have recently settled on this being my favourite bowie album of all time. however, i’m worried that the fact that my favouite song ever is on the album might mean that i am a little biased. when comparing my listening experience with my recent hunky dory listen (an album that i didn’t even consider to be in my top 5 bowie albums, but has since definitely moved into my top 3), i found with the latter that i had so much to say about each individual song, whereas with low i think my appreciation lies in its overall sonic coherence and the movement of the album as a whole and i don’t know whether that means hunky dory is better to me. but some of the musical ideas in low are unlike anything he did before this and they truly defined a lot of his music from then on - i notice echoes of this album in blackstar (which makes sense as that’s solidly the other album in my top three). this album is absolutely a five-star for me, which not every bowie album is at all, so this review isn’t serving to justify my rating, only to voice my crisis over whether it deserves top spot.

Innovative, ingenious... This album is Bowie's Way of being free. Experiment. Investigate. Try. Dare. Something like, 'let me show you the world in my blood...' Song 'Art Decade' is a very emotional on a Bladerunner way. 'Weeping Wall' is instrumental but with a lot of space for personal projections (almost psychoanalytic). Also, this is one of those when first hearing is like nothing special, sound seems even very pretentious for those who are not familiar and listen this for the 1st time (because we have to adjust on Bowie's perception....) 2nd time, is - hmmm, I think I like this song... 3rd time - wait what! omg this is so good. This is not an album, this is storytelling all the time... Thanks, I never listened full album before. Mine of diamonds.

David Bowie instrumentals? Surprisingly love this. I've always heard about this album but never listened to it, and I get it now. "Speed of Life" and "Sound and Vision" are probably my favorite songs from this album. I love how different it is, yet is still very distinctly Bowie. I got this album right after Young Americans, and it's so interesting to hear the contrast of the two.

The second half of this thing caught me by surprise. It sounds almost exactly like a Popol Vuh record. Definitely not Bowies best work but he's exploring sone really interesting synthy sounds here. Pretty damn bold to go for full instrumentals on the second half

Woah this was cool, super synthy and more experimental than I was expecting. Good vibes overall and I loved the deep sax on Sound and Vision

I always struggle to write reviews for albums that are so masterful, but I just want to say Low is one of my favourite albums of all time and my favourite Bowie album. The trick with this album is that, even at its most deranged and frankly odd, Bowie manages to slide an excellent hook in there. All the songs on the first half are excellent and have exquisite performances (notice the drum sound on this in particular), each of the tunes have a unique identity and the songwriting is so good that Bowie doesn't even need to extend most of these songs past 3 minutes. And then there's the instrumental back half undoubtedly masterminded by Eno. The set takes you from the denizens and back alleys of Berlin to starkly showing the clarity and starkness of Bowie's mind. Each song has powerful melodies and is completely brought to life by the instrumentation and production choices. The album is perfectly paced as well, with the joyful train ride around Europe of A New Career in a New Town to the downbeat, spiritual nature of Warszawa (a song so ridiculously good that joy division almost named themselves after it). Never has a Bowie album felt so alive, so realized through every aspect of its creation. This review of course sounds like total dickriding, but come on, this is one of the greatest of all time.

Not for me. At all.

Start of Bowie's Berlin period, the first "side" of arty krautrock synthesiser inspired jams flys by, aided by timely fade ins and outs, and contains the excellent "Sound and Vision" which sounds like it could go on for far longer than its posted 3:03. Try and listen and no have the do-do-do-do-dooos in your head for days. Side two slows down more than a little with the bleak as fuck "Warszawa" and the rest is ambient instrumental music. Truly a tale of two albums smashed together, but it works, mostly. Less than a year later he'd release "Heroes", madness.

Really interesting album that I had never listed to before, although I was familiar with a couple of the songs (Sound and Vision, Be My Wife). Love the ambient vibe to the second half and the way he uses his voice as an instrument. Definitely an introspective Bowie album.

I love David Bowie so mich that I chose him as a most admireble person in the world for the presentation about in the English class. I liked this album but the other albums are much better I think.

Certainly interesting, but not really something I'd actively listen to very often. The first part is relatively tradicional while the secons part is very focused on instrumentals and repeating spacey melodies with sometimes a sort of an eearie vibe. Doesn't really focus on vocals and aims to create more of an ambient. Could be used as interesting background music though. A song that stands out the most to me is definitely Speed of Light. Nice spacey bowie-like experimental sound. Idk though if won't get bored of it quite fast as it is pretty repetitive. Sound and Vison isn't too bad either. Not sure that I'll return much to this album though, but good to know. 5/10

BLUE BLUE ‘LECTRIC BLUE

In the first half of the record, the way it sounded felt a decade earlier than 1977, but after the first half some of the tasteful abstraction started to shine through more, creating some freshness. The songs with Bowie's vocals usually ended up being my least favorite; on those particularly I didn't feel the vision and they were mostly forgettable. Some others I could just appreciate for sounding balanced, unique, and immersive. I tried to listen without the influence of name attached and as a result the record as a whole left me lukewarm and not personally enthralled. 4/10

In general I haven't been too impressed with the David Bowie singles that I've heard and could never figure out what the big deal was, but this album was pretty good.

“Low” is on the more experimental end of Bowie’s music although there’s still a big emphasis on melody, especially on the first half which is made up of relatively straightforward rock songs. I really like the first half and the way the music works strange sounds and styles into the songs. I can’t get enough of “Breaking Glass.” “Sound and Vision” is the only song I was previously familiar with because it’s on the Greatest Hits and it’s definitely the closest to straight-up pop. Great funky sound. The second half is a little more hit or miss for me but it’s also the more challenging half. It leans toward ambient music and experimental rock. I’m not sure when I’ll ever really want to listen to a song like “Warszawa.” In addition to being a dramatic movie score-type track, it’s a little cheesy. “Art Decade” is beautiful though and “Weeping Wall” has a trancelike vibe. “Subterraneans” is excellent too. I like that Bowie uses his vocals on this one for a few minutes before he sings any words. Interesting album. I listened to it twice and it definitely got better the second time. I’ll let this one continue to sit with me.

Rockin riffs, space synths, and his dynamic voice that is cool yet haunting yet inviting all at once. I think the first half went by quickly and I enjoyed it a lot, and then the second half had to try harder to grab me. I also felt like the first half songs were just too short. I would just get to feeling out a track and then it would be gone. Half of the first half tracks were under 3 minutes. Overall I liked the record. It's not my favorite of his and I get this feeling that this album is like him sitting down in a studio for a week and saying "screw it let's see what comes out.", and writing and recording everything there. His sound is so good that it works but there's something missing in the songs.

Although I enjoyed this album, there were times that I was wishing that it was over. There are some songs I really liked such as “Be My Wife”. Most of the synth heavy songs I was waiting for Dieter to pop out and ask me if I wanted to touch his monkey.

No wonder there's a mural of David Bowie down the street from me. Sonic exploration in an attempt to redefine music. I was going to give this 4 stars in an effort to be critical with my album journey, but then I had a dream that I had to recommend one album to somebody that didn't believe in good music anymore and I recommended this album.

This was quite interesting as it didn't feel like a Bowie album. Maybe too non-quirky and/or more electronic elements than I'm used to in Bowie's music. Still, I enjoyed it, refreshing! Shows that Bowie is quite the musician with many different sides to him. I instantly liked 'Sound and Vision' when it came on, but other than that not much really stuck. There were some nice melodic pieces in the latter part of the album like 'Art Decade' and 'Weeping Wall', but somehow don't feel like it deserves more than a quite strong 3 star rating, still.

Felt like a typical 80s album until i realised it was released in 1977 which is impressive. A few standout tracks "Speed of Life", "Breaking Glass" and "Sound and Vision". Other than that it wasn't really a sound I assosiated with Bowie. A nice album!

Grooovy

This album is the perfect encapsulation of who Bowie was. Someone capable of reinventing himself personally and professionally while simultaneously trailblazing a new path for popular music. It’s an album that requires a dedicated ear to uncover its true merit, but one that is so rewarding. It’s one of the purest examples of the value of experimentation and innovation. I’m not sure it’s my favorite Bowie album, but it’s definitely my most revered.

Listened to this one a few times today. Not the biggest Bowie fan but I wanted to give this a fair shot. I can definitely see the appeal to the original intended audience. Must have been so different than what people were used to hearing. First few tracks were immediately catchy, the latter part of the album took a little longer to appreciate. Still not sure I'm there yet, but I'll certainly give this another listen from time to time. Albums are great.

This album is an absolute masterpiece and I hear something new every time. The entire second side still blows me away and is just beautiful.

- I think his music is just not it for me - sounds like beach music but he has an annoying voice - I saved ONE song that was decent just so I have a reference of David Bowie 💀 - instrumental sounds a bit like old nature documentary music - production isn’t horrible but once he opens his mouth it’s game over

Started off pretty good. A couple of nice tracks, although the ones with lyrics often felt unfinished and almost like they ended before they should have. By the end of the album this wore out its welcome, though. Songs were too long and might have given me a headache. Better than Black Star, but I know he's got way better stuff to come in the 1001 for me.

Sound and Vision is a neat little package of everything that is so great about Bowie.

What in the world is too busy of a song for my taste. 1st track was repetitive and all band. This album has the Bowie flair and musicality but lacks the vocal sound. The ambient sound is what makes this skippable for me it is just not my cup of tea.

First time Bowie. Not sure I understood it all. But some enjoyable tracks. Deserves more listens surely.

Favorite Bowie album for years. I haven’t really come back to it in a while so my tastes might have changed a bit but regardless it is a 5/5 no question. The despair and feeling in some of these songs are incredible and I feel like I’m staring down the wall in east Berlin. Wild how art can achieve so much with so little. Bowie is one of the greatest artists of our era without a doubt. Constantly pushing the boundaries of what is deemed “acceptable” and blasting through the norms without hesitation. A true hero and pioneer for weirdos and eccentric individuals. Not to mention breaking countless gender norms. Rip.

Songs feel very unfinished. Lack of structure or even good timing. Many of them lazily fade out rather than actually ending. They are like half ideas for songs that got recorded and never went back to.

I need to spend more time with this album.. feels like it gets more rewarding with every listen.

It was not very engaging to listen. First part of the album is ok but there is not much happening after 7 track. There is nothing wrong with it. It is just too minimalistic for me.

Originally thought to be aggressively non-commercial, "Low" today sounds like a satisfying, endlessly interesting rock album, which I think speaks to its influence over and foreshadowing of modern rock sounds and sensibilities.

Hate to say; I’ve become quite an Eno-head over the years. Very interesting record, the first half is that classic Bowie sound mixed with some more contemporary elements.
