Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Kind of a downer album. Imagine is ok and the last song Oh Yoko was kind of fun. Not overtly impressed.
Fine.
Some good tunes, and some, well, musical fiddling around in the style of John Lennon.
Oh Yoko! may be the best song written by any Beatle but Lennon should have been brought up on charges for the lyrics to Jealous Guy.
John Lennon with more singing about Yoko Ono
The title track is obviously a classic Jealous Guy and Oh Yoko also stand up brilliantly The rest is more than fine but not amazing. Misses the rest of The Beatles
There are large parts of this album that do nothing for me at all, but then there are some pretty high peaks for me as well. Putting the titular aside, It's So Hard and How Do You Sleep? moved me pretty greatly in particular. It is not a coincidence that those two are the ones that didn't try to recreate the Beatles feel. The other tracks clearly show talent, but it just didn't feel right without the whole cast.
3 stars.
The album was alright. I knew a couple of the songs. It was mainly unremarkable though. He at least got the message to keep the album short and edit the songs down appropriately. I don't see myself revisiting the entire album though.
This was quite hard for me to rate honestly. The music itself was good, but nothing spectacular for me personally. But since it's John Lennon you sort of feel inclined to give the benefit of the doubt. But I still think a strong 3 is appropriate for me when comparing with other albums. To get a 4, I'd at least want to feel some excitement about some songs and want to give it a listen again. Not so much with this. 'Imagine' is of course a very good song, and 'Oh Yoko!' was quite good as well, though very cheesy.
If the Lennon albums I've heard, I liked this one most.
Yeah, this is alright.
Ok album, wasn’t my favorite. Good chance to listen to a full John Lennon album!
So so. The drummer went on to join Yee.
Lots of great songs
Wow, he really did need the other beatles member to seem likeable enough to create an album that made any sense. One example is "Imagine" asking for world peace when "How do you sleep?" attacks Paul McCartney. Though there are a couple great tunes, John's personality and self indulgence sabotages this one and stops from being an essential, or even a great album.
"Jealous Guy" remains one of Lennon's finest songs.
Bit dull tbh. A few decent tunes. ‘Imagine’ the song is a bit of a dirge
3/5 for the album, but it's tempting to give 2/5 because of the person.
2 absoulte bangers in jealous guy and imagine. The rest slightly pedestrian only slightly better than wings
Just think what this guy could've achieved if he was part of a decent band...
Top tunes for narcissists.
John Lennon, after leaving the Beatles, had an interesting solo career. He did some weird shit with Yoko Ono for a while, but then he pivoted and did pretty normal singer/songwriter stuff that was way more up his alley. This brings is to Imagine. The title track has found enough acclaim for it's dreamy approach and vaguely anarchist lyrics, so I won't spend too much time on that. I think that solo Lennon is a lot different than Beatles Lennon, in that he's bearing his soul a bit more by diving headfirst into touchy political subjects. Was there ever any doubt that he had bought into the hippie counterculture? I feel that this acute sense of vulnerability brings a great new dimension to his music, complimenting his already-excellent songwriting talents. So it's pretty good.
John Lennon’s Imagine is sleepy. Really on the last four tracks bring anything of value, everything else being a snooze fest. It’s truly unfortunate, considering Oh Yoko! was really well put together, John’s vocals clicking together excellently with the instrumentals. It really is not anything worth nothing besides that, with lackluster vocal performances and bland songs. All in all, Imagine is a mid album. best Song: Oh Yoko! Worst Song: I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama I Don't Wanna Die
If it wasn't for Imagine, this album would not even be talked about. Whilst it's not bad, I found it kind of average overall. There are some ok songs throughout, but there are a couple that don't seem to quite fit in my opinion. Best: Imagine Worst: Oh Yoko!
p232. 1971. 3 stars. Further evidence the lack of quality control post-Beatles. On the plus side, there are some stone cold classics. On the downside, it suffers from early 70s wankage (How Do You Sleep, I Don't Want To Be A Soldier), and the production makes most of the songs sound as if they're coated in syrup. This hasn't aged well, a bit like John. Sorry mate.

This is the first time I have ever listened to this album all the way through, despite hearing the title track an infinite number of times. I enjoyed tracks as I got through the album, but it doesn't seem like a cohesive expression, and tends to jump from sound to sound in a slightly jarring manner. I liked the bluesy songs on this one a lot, and I had no idea the album behind Imagine included such a large shift in song structure. Overall the album feels unpolished, but still delivers powerful messages in classic Jon Lennon fashion. Worth the listen, but not a standout for me. Fave tracks: Imagine, It's So Hard, I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama
AJ: How Do You Sleep..? is my favorite track. Imagine is iconic, duh. Pretty cool. All Things Must Pass it is not. The walrus was Paul.
Nice one :-)
not bad…some bangers for sure but also a few duds. i suppose he did the best he could without paul to help.
🤜🏻🙍🏻♀️🤛🏻 3.5 out of 5 pretentious wife beaters. I don't wanna be a soldier mama? More like I don't wanna listen to this song mama. The rest of the songs I enjoyed. I love the Beatles but JL solo music doesn't hit the same plus he was a self important asshole who wasn't as talented as Paul.
John Lennon is great and this album is okay. In addition to the obvious Imagine, Give Me Some Truth is a highlight
I still have a hard time reconciling that on the same album we have "Imagine" and "how do you sleep". An unparalleled (and incredibly naive) song of peace of hope along with a weird angry dis track against Paul. I guess he's just a jealous guy
6/10 rien de spécial.
Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love 3/5
i liked it, but imagine was the best
Didn’t love it except for imagine of course.
John Lennon is great. And the majority of this album is great. Not a fan of don't wanna be a soldier, how do you sleep and oh yoko... those really dragged the album down.
Imagine and jealous Guy are beautiful of course, rest for musically and lyrically less interesting than e.g. early solo work like Instant Karma and Cold Turkey
John Lennon kind of sucks. Not interesting.
3/5. There are some good songs on here but it just feels empty really. Almost like John doesn’t care about what he’s singing. The hard hitting songs are quiet and the soft songs are the better part of the album. Maybe it’s the Brit fatigue but this was just okay. Best song: Imagine, Jealous Guy.
Already reviewed "Hard work. Sounds like it was recorded behind a mattress."
3.5
Byrjar þokkalega, miðjumoðast svo og endar á tveimur góðum. Þetta er allt í lagi. Blendnar tilfinningar.
I loaded this album up in Clone Hero and played bass to the whole thing. For someone who was basically the biggest musician in the world at the time, this album is surprisingly down-to-earth. John clearly wanted to play some old-fashioned rock n roll. There's some really insightful social commentary on here (the title track is vapid by comparison when you listen to "How?"). I wasn't expecting much from this album (I've found Lennon to generally by over-hyped), but I actually quite liked this. Three stars, but not a video game critic three stars-- a real three stars, where it means that the album has interesting and good stuff on it, and I'll play it again in the future.
I'll take Neil Young over John Lennon for my protest songs, thanks. Ignoring my bias, this album was fine. So it gets a 3.
Eh, not my piece of cake. 6/10
just because he was a beatle doesn’t mean everything he makes is good
Sounds cool. Not a fan of the politics. I probably should’ve listened to the Beatles first.
This was a tough one to get the rating right for me. Obviously, there's the opening track, but even that is victim to what I think is an incompleteness to this album. Laziness? It sounds like they slapped the same reverb on every song and let the tape roll. And there's a demo-like quality to many of the songs as well, as though not all these ideas are fleshed out. There are lots of great passages, and the looseness isn't always a detraction, but I couldn't help feeling like Lennon was only half interested in the whole affair. Pair that with lots of more-righteous-than-thou lyrics and an unnecessary diss of Paul McCartney, and I that ultimately pulled it down to a 3. Hard to give such a revered album a middling review, but that's how I was feeling about it.
My honest opinion that apart from a few songs that have become icons in themselves, most of the album is pedestrian. Great if you are a Beatles diehard or love the song Imagine and there are as I've said some inspired moments
A partial meal, you yearn for The Beatles and only end up with two of them on this album, some great songs but not as complete as you would hope for .
Some decent tracks in there, but I don't think John Lennon's a really good singer.
Always wondered why I'd not listened to this all the way through before. Same this time. Sort of lacking.
Ouais j'ai bien imaginé là
un peu bizarre à réécouter
Imagine how good this album would be if the title track was actually any good
He has a great voice and exceptional song writing ability, but knowing anything about his personal life makes it particularly hard to take the peace and love stuff seriously. The existence of the song Jealous Guy is wild. It is hard to separate someone so famously cruel to his first wife from his art, especially when he is doing that art with/about his second wife who he cheated on the first wife with.
Was ok.
It's hard to rate this album objectively because I absolutely love John Lennon, and this album also. And Imagine is a beautiful song which will no doubt stay relevant for the remainder of our time on this planet. Setting my emotions aside however, none of The Beatles produced a lot of great music after they disbanded, and this album taken as a whole is unfortunately no exception.
"Imagine" must be short for "Imagine this album being good" Mainly powered by the lead track, which itself is overplayed these days. .5 more because couple of tracks towards the end were alright 2.5
Half the songs amazing. Half the songs almost John Lennon parody. 3/5
Score: 50 Album Art: 60 The lyrics on here have so much weird hypocritical garbage it's unreal. Ignoring John Lennons actions is almost impossible because of how preachy this shit is. Wow John it is really hard to imagine the world as a better place, you're so deep bro. The music is good and he's a good singer but I cannot give a single shit about this, I just can't. When he's saying how sorry he is and that he's just a jealous guy it comes off as so insincere it actually sounds like he's bragging about it. Gimme some truth is really funny as well. Oh yoko is really funny with a dumb outro. No one wants to hear about your talentless wife who thinks she's the next Bjork. Glad it's over lol see you on the flip side
First track is over played garb but rest had its moments.
A couple of all time classic tunes, some weaker ones, but overall pretty good.
Medium.
I've ignored this album for a quite long time because of how boring i find the song Imagine. Surprisingly, there's quite a bit to enjoy here. If nothing else, the track "How do You Sleep" is a masterpiece.
Good enjoyable album. I am not a fan of John Lennon personally (he was a shit person). The Beatles had some really great album when they were together though.
Absolutely like porridge. Bland and yet I eat it up.
There’s some good stuff on this, but it just feels so one-note compared to the latter two thirds of the Beatles catalogue, it’s impossible not to compare really and it just falls short
We need a category/rating for ‘I appreciate this but wont be returning’. Enjoyed bits of it but other parts just passed me by and although I can see why this is rated so highly, its just not my cuppa tea. ‘Its so hard’ and ‘how do you sleep’ were the standouts for me
Imagine is a brilliant song, up there with the best of the Beatles. The rest of the album, like other Beatles stuff, varies between great and awful. Thought the second half of the album was far better than the first, particularly enjoyed how and Yoko. More evidence that supports the theory John and Paul are time travellers that nicked the best songs from loads of other bands and filled the rest of the albums with their own rubbish.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, he uses a lot of interesting styles of music. Think Imagine was his only song I had before but overall I was pleasantly surprised. Highlights: Imagine Crippled Inside It's So Hard
This was probably better than I thought it would be, but didn't have high expectations. No desire to go back and listen to any of it again. Imagine aside, I thought jealous guy was probably the best track, although it was probably more beatlesy than most of the rest of the album. Tbh the fact that this album just wasn't just more of the Beatles sound was unexpected to me.
Was fine, better than some beatles stuff but not going to listen again
Kind of average. A couple songs stood out.
It is okay, i get why it has the classic status. But I just think it sounds very dated. The soft rock sounds are just not done that well. Just a worse version of that John Martyn album.
Respect but mixed feelings.
I'm a huge Beatles fan, but I've always been of the opinion that the band was greater than the sum of its parts. This album hasn't changed that opinion. It's not bad, but there's something missing without the others to temper Lennon's sensibilities. "Jealous Guy" is my favorite song on the album, but unfortunately for Lennon, it took Donny Hathaway to really give it the oomph it needed; Lennon's version (especially when accompanied by the music video) is kinda dorky in comparison. The other Beatles are sorely missed here. That's no knock to Lennon—I'd say the same for any of their solo efforts.
I like McCartney's RAM a WAY more.
One of the best songs ever written - Jealous Guy - and then a load of dross. Sorry John.
3.5
It's an essential album with not so many remarkable songs besides "Imagine." I'll probably forget about it in some weeks (while still mentally singing "Imagine" tough), but I guess that every time I go back to it, it's an opportunity to remember how important it was (Lennon himself and also his songs)
Yep yep
Jahn
Meh
Ah yeah, this is pleasant enough. Imagine is a good track, Crippled Inside is a bit of a banger and Oh Yoko! is just funny.
Some pretty good tracks, but deducting a star for a wifebeater singing about being a "Jealous Guy". 😒 Fave track - "I Don't Want to be a Soldier Mama", but that's mainly due to the excellent version Mad Season did....
Imagine is fantastic, good to play on piano. Loved jealous guy as well. But the rest was sub-beatles.
Regular readers will know of my dislike of The Beatles, so it'll come of no surprise that I'm not a fan of their solo careers as well.
Listenable and partly nice
I feel like Lennon wrote Imagine and maybe jealous guy and just used filler for the rest. This record really struggles in the first half. sucks. And it feels like he blows the wad on that first track. It's get's okay by the end but this is not up to the level that I would expect from one of the two main Beatles.
Not bad, just kinda bland?
It's got some notable songs ("Imagine", "Jealous Guy") but otherwise it's a pretty nice but forgettable album.
Du très bon (Imagine, Jealous Guy, Oh my love, Oh Yoko...) Du très pénible. Au final pas un album très agréable.
Didn't have much expectations for this, but the songwriting and vocals are pretty decent actually
I don't know if I've really paid attention to my thoughts on Lennon vs. McCartney as song writers. Good. Not great. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is better in my opinion.
Imagine is pretty good, I'm not a Beatles fan and the little I've heard of Lennon's solo stuff outside of the played-out Imagine isn't my thing, but this is well put together. Jealous Guy is really good, delicate but stoic, Oh My Love is nicely done as well. 3/5, it's good.
Not as good as his other post-Beatles album - although there are a couple of really good songs on here. Imagine I've heard so much to the point it hurts, so not really a net positive, but Jealous Guy and Gimme Some Truth are fantastic songs (but probably both better when covered by others), and the McCartney diss track is also decent. Not great aside of that, it merits a 3 but no more.
Doesn’t even have imagine
I've never really liked this album much, apart from Imagine. I'm really tired of hearing Jealous Guy, and it definitely has a different vibe now knowing how abusive Lennon was to his wife! The rest of the album is very middle of the road; a lot of throwaway songs with muddy production and several that run too long.
I have a grudge against the title song but I have to admit that it’s musically good. Most of this is a little too country for me but I love the 70s production style. Oh my love is good! How do you sleep too! Overall not my favorite but I like a few songs.
The temptation was to skip Imagine as the opening track. Great song, for sure. But how many times do you need to hear this? The message has long since been lost on me after every shitty commercial radio station plays it on rotation. They don't wake up the breakfast crew with Gimme Some Truth. Which is a shame, as there are bloody great rallying calls here beyond all the hippie bollocks. I'm always surprised when I see that this was recorded in 1971. It doesn't sound like a Beatles crossover album. I also had no idea that Phil Spector was involved. Jealous Guy is up there amongst some of the finest Beatles songs.
3.5 stars. Imagine us great but only really enjoyed a couple other songs
I just always feel solo Beatles albums are lacking.
This album is just ok
meh, 3/5
favourite tracks: jealous guy oh yoko!
Decent, John's solo work definitely doesn't compare to any of The Beatle's projects. I'm yet to hear any of Paul's solo work but i'm hoping it's better than this. My rating: 6.5/10 Need to be on this list: 9/10
I found it pretty decent. A little all over the place thematically and sonically, which keeps it from getting stale but also is a little weird at times. Lots of different influences and topics covered, all quite well tbf. 6/10
All my life I thought John was the best beatle. But after listening to this, I think it was actually Paul.
I tend to be disappointed by Lennon solo albums, and this one follows that. Imagine (the song) is amazing. I was surprised by how much I liked Oh Yoko! though...maybe the 2nd best on the album. 3/5
Surprising listening to this for the first time. Familiar with the singles but not the album.
6/10 - (Didn’t Finish) Overall good. I like the mastering sound, almost grungy or like it’s in a warehouse. Some blues influence on songs. Nice songwriting, not quite my tastes.
Good album but in no rush to listen again.
"Imagine" fin troppo bella e carica di significati. Rilassante
Its a sweet album and it may not be the most ground breaking album ever but itsnstill lovely
Political at parts, personal most of the time. While it can feel sappy, it delivers through catchy instrumentation and mostly interesting personal anecdotes.
3.8
6/10
Good album containing some all time classics. More background music for me.
This album has Imagine on it! And then some other songs
Surprisingly mediocre. It seems that old Johnny-boy sounds best when he's working alongside the rest of the Beatles, when he does songs that refer to them like How Do You Sleep?, or when he sings tracks like Jealous Guy - which sounds a lot like A Day in the Life. Otherwise, the record isn't very hard-hitting (heh).
Okay. This is not fair of me, I know… it’s a classic album, it’s without a doubt strong all the way through, it sounds like the fulcrum upon which music was shifting from the 60’s to the 70’s. But I just have trouble *enjoying* John Lennon’s solo music. Where people hear peace and love, I hear cynical, jaded, angry. In common parlance… he sounds butthurt! The McCartney “How Do You Sleep?” track doesn’t help adjust my perception. I think John Lennon’s writing has to contain some of the most widely misinterpreted lyrics in music. People wish to ascribe to him a mistaken sense of optimism and level-headedness that I see nowhere in sight. There’s nothing wrong with the album, the Phil Spector production feels nicely restrained, there are great sounds. He sings his heart out. But I’m not eager to return to John Lennon’s world.
“Imagine” beautiful piano, great on my AirPods. I can just imagine living in 1971 and having this come out on vinyl. How cool would that be? “Crippled Inside” great tune, great twangy banjo, never heard it before. I like the sax breakdown towards the end of “I don’t wanna be a soldier mama.” The band is tight and outshining Lennon’s voice for me. Wow, How Do You Sleep? was High Drama. I loved it! Jacob is right, John Lennon is butthurt and I’m eating it up. Man, put violins and drums together and it’s going to be a big yes from me. Really enjoyed the band in How? I agree with Dyl that Oh Yoko! is the best song on the album. The Rushmore soundtrack can’t go wrong! Overall, I enjoyed listening to this album, nothing ground breaking for me. The band shines so bright ☀️.
Lennon was a not-nice human being, and a hell of a musician. Landmark album you should listen to at least once.
Oh god. Imagine is a legitamately good and uplifting song that has been beaten to death by replays ever since it aired. Crippled Inside blows that away with a jangly, honky-tonk song about emotionally stunted. The feel of the first side is more of like a bluesy jam band kinda vibe, but without all the extra fluff. arrangment on I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier, Mamma is pretty open. Oh Yoko sucks ass.
Some good stuff. Imagine that. The guy was in pain, confused and lost after the break. Loss of balance. Simple tunes, a good deal of psycho babble and finger pointing with apologies. He was best when he had discipline forced on him but he rebelled and could get away with anything because of who he was. Sorry he's gone. A huge loss as he started really coming into his own a few years after this one. Cut down when he seemed to awaken.
It’s still good because Lennon, but in parts it just sounds like less good Beatles
Sure, everybody agrees Imagine is an all-time great song. I'd never listened to the rest of the album though. Not a collection of all-time great songs...
I was never a fan of the song "Imagine". I discovered it when I was in high school. During that time, I made slogans and reaction papers and essays about all those things about the environment, the society... you get the picture. That being said, I'm basically sick and tired of all these MAKE PEACE and SAVE THE EARTH and all those BLAH BLAH BLAH as if people would listen to fifteen year olds. Not that I don't care, it's just annoying. I feel like a clown writing all those slogans not because I genuinely care but because it's a school requirement. Everything feels synthetic when the school forces you to do it. So when I discovered "Imagine", it just passed as another MAKE PEACE blah blah blah. And listening to it now, it still is. The lyrics are frankly shallow and even naïve, and while the minimalist piano sound is a nice touch, it's not really a captivating tune. But that's the main appeal of this album. The simplicity and the straightforwardness of it. Personally, there's nothing really special about it overall, except perhaps that it's made by a former member of a popular rock band. The ballads have a pretty nice sound, they have better instrumentals then "Imagine". "Jealous Guy" might take a couple of relistens and a dozen articles about him apparently beating his wives for me to appreciate it though. I enjoyed the Beatles remants in the rock tracks. The bluesy "Crippled Inside" and the slightly psychedelic "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" are nice surprises, although they're still pretty weak. Overall, this album is decent, albeit cheap. It only suffers from the fact that it's overhyped AF and that it's rooted in John Lennon's personal musings, and John Lennon and his personal musings are too easy to hate.
Ihan kelpo albumi. Myös Oh My Love ja How? miellyttivät. Muut kappaleet jättivät hieman kylmäksi, joten kolmonen lienee sopiva arvosana.
It’s alright
Not as saccharine as I anticipated. Infused with good jangle.
jo war ok, paul is trotzdem besser :)
It's fine, but nothing special. Had never given it a fair listen and am happy I did now, but happy to move to other things, too.
Some awesome tracks, less interested in the blues style tracks
Some good songs, others pale copies of Beatles songs
it's not the plastic ono band necessarily. but im curious. It's a dated version of everything. Probably edgy in the 70s but boring now.
nice and mellow
Some classics, would listen again, favorites album as a whole, but no songs individually
Before I heard this album I was dreading it. I'm no fan of The Beatles, John Lennon, or the song "imagine" so I figured I'd not enjoy this album. The first couple of songs proved me right, then it picks up. I actually like the wide variety of sounds on this album from traditional beatles sounding stuff to move hippy/groovy vibes. The song "Oh my love" was my favorite, I actually really liked that one. 3/5 stars, nothing special one way or the other.
A 3 for imagine alone. Some of the other ones seemed weak tho.
3.4 - solid album. Always liked Oh Yoko and Imagine. Jealous Guy is solid, but recent covers show the potential missed in the original. Others like Gimme Some Truth just missed the mark.
good
It was okay. Not my style really
As a writing duo with McCartney he was brilliant, as a solo artist I feel he was missing something, and feel the same way about McCartney. Aside from the tracks that everyone knows there was nothing that really stood out in the album.
The song, Imagine, is probably John Lennon's most well known (post-Beatles) song he recorded and it might just be one of the most recognizable songs in the world. Imagine, the album, with the help of the popularity of the song is considered by many essential, but listening to the album as a whole, it isn't his best work. Apart from a couple of songs, the album is inconsistent and a little over-rated. There's nothing wrong with it, but he has other albums that deserve to be on this list more.
Thought I'd be nostalgia biased but no actually. And his voice really isn't that great. Still really like Oh Yoko though, what a ditty.
Men mistenke at eg like Beatles bedre
Aside from one or two tracks, the music doesn’t really interest me. The messages are powerful, none the less.
Imagine is a classic but besides that nothing stood out to me
Not amazing. Needs the rest of the Beatles. Just got a name from them and tried to go solo. Didn’t work out so well
I enjoyed this. If you're closing an album with "Oh Yoko!" then it's going to be hard for me to hate what you're laying down, and I had a pleasant time with "Gimme Some Truth" and "Crippled Inside" as well. I'd be fine to let "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" stay in 1971, but I get it. Activists gonna activist. And, of course, there's the title track which we don't even really need to talk about at this point. Most atheistic leaning song to ever connect with the wide mainstream? Maybe there's another I'm not thinking of... Going to go listen to some Stryper to counterbalance. See ya!
the song imagine is just unbeatable so having it start off the album set up really high expectations that proceeded to not be met throughout any part of the album. it was completely mediocre. #samebirthdaythough
OK, the title track may be simple and overplayed but it's an undeniable all-time classic. I just don't know about the rest of it. It's fine. I like the Beatles as much as the next person (that isn't a Beatles diehard) but I think John really missed Paul. :) Maybe not *literally* ("How Do You Sleep" is an early diss track haha) ok ok obviously it's not supposed to be the Beatles and it shouldn't be but there's a melodic and quirky element that's often missing from John's songs that is...nothing *bad* by any means, but a little more straightforward than I care for. And some of these songs just drag. Still, I'm nitpicking - it's a good listen, just not a great one. 5/10 3 stars.
kind of boring honestly. it had some funky little tunes but overall i don’t think i would listen to it again. john lennon and john legend are not the same person (both artist’s music is mediocre though, apparently)
Meh.
Pretty average album. Probably hovers between 2-3 stars for me. Most songs feel like Beatles leftovers or pretentious. Jealous Guy sounds like he is trying to excuse his abusive behaviour. I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama feels lazy and uninspired, especially as a protest song. There are a few gems on this album, notably Imagine, but I do not think of it as an amazing album. Best Songs: Imagine, How? Worst Songs: I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama,
2.5 stars. It was fine, pleasant to listen to. Nothing really stood out. His voice could be annoying on occasion. Appreciated the melodic sound, various supporting instruments
Disappointingly mid. George had the better solo work.
Some of John Lennon's best solo works, and then there's the rest of the album. It was sure nice of George to lend his services to some bland music. Where's the life and vivacity? Why does it sound like John's phoning it in for half of these?
Imagine is a classic and timeless song easily 5/5. I am unfamiliar with the rest of the album. I enjoyed the second song. So far I'm feeling this album is a solid 3/5. Easy to listen to but not spectacular enough for me to give it any more than 3 stars. I'd listen again though to see if my opinion changes.
I never listened to this before, but I like it. It’s kinda Beatles, kinda new. There’s some passive aggressiveness towards Paul. I dig it.
It comes to me as no surprise that the title track has loads more plays on Spotify than anything else in this album; it's definitely a great (but not Earth-shatteringly good) song, even if one attempts to remove it from the lofty (and perhaps annoying) pedestal it's earned in pop culture. The other songs aren't really worth mentioning, I feel. Not terrible but not great, they really seem to suit the idea of a post-prime older artist experimenting with different sounds.
Barely
Musically a fine album, garbage human though.
Uninspiring outside of a few songs
Lennon was pretty good at writing piano ballads, even though I think the philosophy of the song "Imagine" eluded the man himself. The man had a knack for writing songs, and his sons aren't half bad at it either. I don't find these songs particularly captivating, especially when considering the Beatles discography. I don't understand why he put that effect on his voice for several of the songs because he had pretty good singing chops, but the effect just kind of butchers it. Highlights: 1, 3, and 8.
Five important Lennon solo song ; Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Solo, How, and his signature song, Imagine. A mixture of protest songs, primal scream truth-telling, and pop fancies. Straightforward production with a crack band, tastefully under-playing, and really lovely string arrangements. Thanks god Lennon vetoed the record company's desire to release Oh Yoko! as a single. Nothing against Yoko, but this song is noticeably more pop than the rest of the record, and a little out of place. The thing I really noticed about this record is how honest Lennon often is. listening to Jealous Guy, he is saying things in a a blunt, unvarnished way that I find hard to believe that the biggest pop star in the world would put on a record for all to hear. he is really laying himself open on this record. That said, is Imagine a slightly tone-deaf plea of a multi-millionaire eschewing material possessions? easy to say, if you're rolling in it, mate.
I only knew the 2 big songs from this album. It's decent enough. Still with the heavy Beatles vibe. Stand out tracks - I don't wanna be a soldier mama Jealous Guy Imagine
Not particularly impressive - reminiscent of my least favourite tracks Let It Be.
Some of this was blah, 70s folky shit. But there were some decent tunes. Bit of a surprise
Fav songs: - How Do You Sleep?
Not as great as its reputation might suggest. Controversial??! There are some fine tracks though.
I was surprised that I only enjoyed three or four tracks. I liked it, but I expected to not hear as many slow tracks.
Like imagine, everything else faded into itself
Enjoyed it when I was young, then wasn’t too keen on it, but now I like it again.
Pretty good
Aside from the obvious songs (Imagine, Jealous Guy) this album is pretty ho hum.
I have a problem with John Lennon's solo albums: on one hand, they include hugely potent material (say, Imagine - what a culture bomb!, Jealous Guy, or Watching the Wheels if we're allowed to increase the scope from this particular album). But on the other hand, these albums are also full of very forgettable material, too. Given we're looking at the albums rather than the individual songs here, I will therefore go with the harsher interpretation.
John Lennon was a star. With the Beatles he had much fame. Then, alone, also. In this album his better songs are "Imagine", "Jealous Guy" and "Oh Yoko!"
Trying to listen to Imagine as if you've never heard it before is pretty difficult. Not least when you have a tone deaf version by a renowned former Israeli squaddie/ murderer of Palestinians and their celeb friends still giving you the creeps. But in truth, it is one of two tracks (with Jealous Guy) on this album that reaches anything approaching the heights of what the Beatles did. It is, uncynically, beautiful. The rest of the album plods in the most boring, American way. One of the best things about the Beatles is that they competed so hard to get the best songs to ensure they made the album that you couldn't get the turgid plod rock of Its So Hard, the dull, Oasis style tribute of Gimme Some Truth or the bitter resent of How Do You Sleep. Without Paul, the sad, bitter, wife beating John Lennon wears his worst traits on his sleeve for all but two tracks. Those two tracks are, however, sublime.
3.3 - Bland and pretentious. An entitled baby boomer with a hugely inflated sense of self-righteousness. Besides “Imagine”, the song structures sound lazy and the lyrics simplistic (e.g. “My love will turn you on” and “All I want is the truth/Just give me some truth.”)
Some was okay, most was mid
An OK album. Quite bitter. Don't know if I'll be listening it to it all the way through again.
I went in with low expectations, considering that I don't particularly care for the title track. I do think that it's the weakest song on the album, which pleasantly surprised me. Right after the title track is Crippled Inside, a bouncy jugband tune. Followed by the standout Jealous Guy, a raw love ballad, and arguably the best song on the album. The second half of the album starts with the fiery, mad-at-the-world Gimme Some Truth, featuring some incredible guitar work from George Harrison. Side B continues with songs with more of the Beatles sound, including Oh My Love, ... How?, and How Do You Sleep? - another highlight of the album, and a very blatant diss track at Paul McCartney. The album ends with the tongue-in-cheek Oh Yoko! and it left me wanting more. My exposure to John's solo music has been the title track, and though I came in with low expectations (and part of me wanting to dislike this album because of John being an abuser), I was pleasantly surprised. I'd give this album a 7 out of 10. On the 5-star scale, it would be a very high 3. Enjoyed it, but not as much as some of my 4-star albums such as Blondie or Jerry Lee Lewis.
If this album was made by anybody not named John Lennon, you wouldn't think it was especially good. The title track is the highlight and the rest is immediately forgettable.
Well, I was curious if Lennon's solo career was more (of note) than just Imagine. After listening to this that really doesn't seem to be the case. Imagine is a fantastic song. Nothing else on here is in any way noteworthy though. It doesn't sound bad, just completely uninteresting. It's a 3.5 for me, but I'm rounding it down because I don't really remember any of the tracks a couple of minutes after I've finished listening.
Good album overall butJohn Lennon was better with the Beatles. Would give it a 3.5 if I could.
Pretty much what other people have said. Some nice songs, some songs that could’ve been left out. I like the drums on ”I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama”
It´s a nice album.
gg
Two excellent ballads cannot save a mediocre album of worse ballads and questionable choices in blues-rock flirtation. Besides, you can't handle the truth, John.
Good jams overall. A bit whiney and cliche, but when is John Lennon not? Definitely liking his Beatles work more at this moment in time.
Imagine, the song, is not only one of John Lennon’s most iconic tunes, it’s one of the most iconic tunes of the 20th century. The album however, doesn’t back it up. It’s good but not great. Some tracks remind me of Rolling Stones b-sides.
It very much sounds like what would happen if you were in the biggest band in the world then thought you could give it a go yourself. It's a good enough album but doesn't hit like the Beatles.
It was ok. I prefer the Beatles.
+/-
Solid album
The first 3 songs were good but a lot of the album seemed like filler. Lennon is like "LOL, I beat my wife but I can’t help it because I'm just a jealous guy!"
Beautiful, but too simplistic
title track, obviously a well-known classic. jealous guy feels cheesy, jury’s still out on whether this is good or bad. i think i like it. it’s so hard kinda slaps. same with i don’t wanna be a soldier mama. gimme some truth , okay king, same. oh my love is sweet. how do you sleep is ahead of its time, gooood groove. how and oh yoko lost my interest
The songs I liked made this album great, but honestly there were some songs that I just couldn't stand.
Cool cool
Decent album but didn’t do a whole lot for me
Obviously hits some real high notes, but other parts are pretty bland
Never really got into the Beatle's Non-Beatles stuff, but I like most of this one
"Imagine" has to be one of the most overrated songs ever, but the rest of the album holds its own.
A decent album, but not hiting the best of what I had come to expect
Gimme Some Truth ist "I am the Walrus" 2.0. Platte ist ok.
Like the sentiment of some of the songs but mostly just fine
Hard work. Sounds like it was recorded behind a mattress.
Nice
Imagine (song) is legendary, but the rest isn't all that great
3/5 folky, overhyped me thinks
Inspiring beautiful album of an artist that can tell the story he wants to tell.
Somehow not all that great.
A bit hit and miss for me.
2.5
Much of the music is lovely. I cannot personally stand the insipid, saccharine Imagine. The lyrics of Jealous Guy sounds like an apologia for a wife beater (hmmm I wonder why?). And for all the peace and love, the attack on Paul on How Can You Sleep? is pretty vile (but again, the music is lovely, especially George’s guitar work). The production is excellent - Phil Spector! What a bizarre choice - what strange company, in hindsight. It’s endlessly fascinating to me that the magic of The Beatles came from the four collaborating and whilst strong, this solo album doesn’t compare to the band but maybe comes closest.
The title song is iconic. The rest is meh
That one great song, and a lot of random mutterings that are significantly worse than that one song
Actually much more mediocre than I expected from a legend.
Good - Imagine and Jealous Guy. Meh - the rest.
I think I still hold the opinion that 70s John Lennon is a little bit overrated, but this record is pretty good.
The Beatles suck.
Odd mixing, strong lyrics and themes.
Plätschert vor sich hin
Probably about as close as you’re going to get to a 13th beatles studio album.
This was a beautiful rock album from John Lennon, with his very popular title track - Imagine - stealing the show.
Legendary opener Another short album, yay Favorites: Imagine (duh) Jealous Guy
I felt weirdly embarissed putting this on while cooking -dunno why maybe I have some negative association with John Lennon? I enjoyed it actually, more varied and upbeat than I was expecting
Decent listen
Some wonderful classic songs and some total filler
Classic tracks and some lazy efforts.
3/5 good one, some nice songs but ultimately no.
Some nice tracks, but others rather indifferent.
Derivative
Mention pour It’s So Hard!
todas son aceptables, me gustaron algunas y otras no tanto
How Do You Sleep is interesting for sure...
Two all time classics. The last song...
John Lennon slowly devolved into a very predictable song-writer from "Strawberry Fields Forever," on. He is super witty and politically powerful in lyrics. He continues some themes from "Plastic One Band," but this is much weaker. One or two hit songs.
Lots of bops
better than i thought it would be
I've never really bought into solo John Lennon as being such a visionary etc. etc. But, a fine record.
3
Classic but lots of songs i’m not fond of
Listen, I know John Lennon is one of the greatest names to do it, but I can't will myself to fully enjoy this project. It's full of nice sounding songs. That's the best compliment I can give it. Of course I've heard the title track Imagine and that's a truly beautiful song, but it's the only one of that ilk in my opinion. Imagine as an album sounds like the music of yesteryear and that feels a little antiquated to me. People don't make music like this anymore. That's a sentence that can be interpreted very differently depending on who says it. I think that says a lot about my taste and exactly what Imagine by John Lennon is.
Imagine if the other songs were as good as the first.
Decent album but for a legendary and hyped artist like Lennon, I can't help but to feel the album is underwhelming.
John’s kinda soured for me over the years tbh
All things considered, is a decent album. Starts off with the hit of all hits, and then kind of peters out.
Some great songs, but not the best of the Beatles.
Lyrics hold some power, but the music isn't fantastic. Maybe should have been released as poetry instead of an album?
Interesting experiments with different sounds but executed poorly. Half the tracks come off as beatles b-sides. Still worth giving a second listen in the future. Favorite tracks: Imagine, Crippled Inside
This album starts with Imagine. I’m not sure that Imagine is that good of a song. When I was a kid I thought it was better but as an old man I hear that song and think this guy was just writing some crap. Then I hear the blues song and a country song and I’m like oh god John Lennon is annoying. Then I hear I hear the Mama I don’t want to be a soldier song. It’s one the worst songs I have ever heard. I’m not sure what he’s going for anti-war protest anti-military but then he says I don’t want to be a lawyer because he doesn’t want to lie. But he lied to himself thinking he was important enough to write these songs. But there’s one song where I was like John Lennon is real petty and it’s Paul McCartney diss track. Where he said his music sounds like Muzak and surprised by Sgt Pepper’s. All I was waiting for was John to yell Mustaaaardddd. I thought rap artists had the market on dis tracks but John talked about Paul and his girl like they were his mortal enemies. I didn’t like this album but I’m glad I heard it.
I am running out of ways to say album could be ok but the genre is not my thing at all.
I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama Oh Yoko!
Okay John
Aside from the title song, this is a wholly forgettable album for me. I have essentially no relation to it, so the newness is all I possess to be able to experience this album. I don't really like Lennon's voice or musical instincts enough to really care about this album. Even on Imagine, it's a fine song with great pedigree, but it really rings hollow to me at my present self iteration. I really don't enjoy the vocal filter applied on most of the songs. I think the songs would be much better suited with unfiltered voice vs. this slightly dirty, filtered version. It's an ok album, but far (read: FAR) from the best Lennon works.
526/1089 - Separating the art from the artist so I can hate John Lennon twice.
Corny greier. Phil Spector gjenbruker ideer fra The Long and Winding Road på How? Kjedelig. Blues rock? Kjedelig. I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier er inne på noe.
It's so dumb to me that Paul McCartney was seen as naff and rubbish after the Beatles split while John was the acclaimed one, cos so much of this is naff and rubbish, insincere sentimental claptrap! I like a lot of John Lennon's solo stuff, but it's mainly the stuff where he gives in to being the petty and problematic person he really is and is spikey and bristly. there's a bit of that here, but too much wishy washiness for me to really enjoy it. Oh Yoko is peak Wes Anderson core tho and I still like it.
Rating: 5/10 Imagine is a really annoying mixed bag. The title track and Jealous Guy are both undoubtedly really well made songs, but god the lyrics coming from this guy really give both a sour taste. I don't even like many of the songs after that very much. They're fine. Oh Yoko! is a pretty cute and fun one to end the album, I might just go with that as my favorite.
Imagine (the song) is a bit naff. You're going to lecture us all on materialism while.sitti g at the most expensive piano I have ever seen? Fuck off, John! Most of the rest of the album is just Lennon being a whiny baby. Grow up John! "Oh Yoko, my.love will turn you on!" -gross. This album is actually not bad to be fair to it, but I still hate it.
Nothing outright terrible but I never clicked with anything by The Beatles or any of it's members' solo projects. Just a bunch of ballads without any kind of hook to them whatsoever. 2/5
Damn, I expected better. Superficial and simple aside from the title track.
Underwhelming. I must say, I'm disappointed with this one. Maybe my expectations weren't appropriate, but I like the beatles and really didn't enjoy this as much as I was expecting to.
A word that gets overused in music and movie reviews is “pretentious.” In this case it absolutely deserves it.
What a miserable album
more like Yoko Oh No! ha ha ha you get what I've done here? anyways this is as bad as all the beatles stuff so 2 i guess
5/10 My style of music listening is to ignore the lyrics, so when applied to this album it's just boring
I'm totally indifferent on John Lennon the solo artist and the man. I don't even rate Imagine as a song, which is good because it must have been terrible to watch Gal Gadot and pals do that to a song I liked
Fuck John Lennon
imagine um hipócrita e chatorongo
Imagine if he didn't leave the Beatles and actually made a good album
Imagine is one of the worst songs ever made and the rest of this album is pretty mediocre imo. One of the most overrated albums. I cannot take this dude's lyrics seriously at all, and the songs suffer from mind numbing repetition and annoying hooks. Oh Yoko is kind of sweet, but knowing how he treated her just makes it feel hollow in it's sentiment. yeah idk I don't care for it at all really.
Listened Before? N So, i really WANTED to like this album. Imagine is a fantastic song. The rest of it was just.... boring. John Lennon is touted as a musical genius - but I think he needed the rest of the boys more than he wanted to admit. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Imagine
Fuck offffffffff
