was gonna go 4 but the back half got a lot weaker for me
It's Beatlesy at the end if the day, so certainly not bad but also not as good as most beatles albums
Never was a huge fan of the song Imagine, a little schmaltzy for my taste. Most of the album I felt was a bit subdued, I enjoyed a couple of songs like I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier and Crippled Inside, but otherwise nothing special.
Some good songs, some less good. I can't help thinking about the fact that he was physically abusive towards Cynthia when listening to the song "Jealous Guy". That song feels tainted to me. But there were some cool riffs on this album and obviously the title track can't be overlooked.
Not my favorite beatle
Mh, not sure about this one. Imagine was hugely overplayed, and the rest is lacking the songwriting of e.g. Plastic Ono Band.
Imagine is great. Jealous Man is horribly cringe. The rest is ok. I am tempted to give two stars, but Imagine is good enough to bump it up.
Very good
6/10 - A little boring and imagine is overplayed. I sort of enjoyed Oh Yoko!
Personally, I think every Beatle should have written a diss track about one of the other Beatles. I want to hear Ringo's diss.
Definitely a classic album. Have to admit that I’ve never been passionate about Lennon’s solo stuff although admittedly there is a lot of great stuff. I’ve always found the music lacked a lightness or something. I was surprised by how biting he was about McCartney on ‘how do you sleep?’ so soon after the Beatles broke up.
I have some negative impressions about him and that affected my enjoyment somewhat. Clearly some good tracks on here, but not something i will actively go back to soon
Took a break from domestic abuse to write the most iconic piano intro of all time. Spent the rest of the time recording mediocre blues and Beatles B-sides.
I always thought John Lennon was a bully and that song pointed at Paul McCartney was stupid
Ooh hey that album by John Lennon's not so bad, let me just listen to the last song...... hmm he should have been shot earlier actually.
Bangers and some filler, but the bangers are the size of "Imagine". However, this not my favorite Lennon album from his solo career.
I’ve never really got into any of the Post-Beatles Beatles’ albums. I thought I would have investigated John Lennon’s stuff, but no. The last time an album of his came up on 1001, I was pleasantly surprised. This time, it was more in line with my assumptions. “Imagine” the song, is great, of course. It’s just a little overplayed for me to totally enjoy. And there’s a couple of other tracks I like. But there’s something about the overall sound that doesn’t gel with me. I don’t know why the production of John Lennon’s voice was done this way after the Beatles but it meant I never liked it as much. And I lot of the songs structure seems more basic, less tuneful and more reliant on old 50s rock n roll cliches than in Beatles times. Anyway, the other couple of songs that stood out to me were “Jealous Guy” - a great song but I don’t like this version because of the sound. The strings also put me off - and “Oh Yoko!” Which seemed like a cute ditty. I should probably try and listen again or to more post-Beatles stuff to see if it grows on me.
honestly pretty dull. imagine is overplayed but good and everything else was just kinda boring. was done with the album with like 12 minutes to go
Pretty good. Doesnt reach the hights of some of the classic beatles albums, but works well as something additional to listen to once in a while. Best song: imagine / jealous guy Worst song: Its so hard
I enjoyed some of the songs very much, but others were fillers. Yes, he was a person full of contradictions, but the messages and impact of his music stands regardless.
I grew up around a lot of this music since the Beatles are clearly my dad's favorite artists. I don't think I'd listened to this album in full though. There was always a "they were better together" mentality. But it’s true. This is a good album overall I think, but it highlights where the rest of the group really provided and great push pull to make better albums.
Ein Klassiker
Sucks to live in the post- COVID celebrity 'imagined cover, since the song just makes me cringe every time I hear it. That's said, this album isn't a favorite. 3/5
Imagine is a good song. The rest dragged on a bit.
Imagine if the rest of the album was like the first song. Then it would be a good album, but as it is, it's just average.
Still creeped out by the idea of John turning Yoko on after the last track.
Imagine is a good listen, albeit fairly uninspired. John Lennon seems to fall flat compared to the highs that The Beatles hit when writing together, and this project is no exception. It’s bookended by what I’d consider to be the best tracks with a few hits interspersed among the other bland or samey-sounding tracks. It’s very nice for background music but not something I’d actively sit down to fully invest my attention into.
This album is many things: deeply earnest, impeccably produced, and teeming with tasteful instrumentation. But its identity might be best formed by what it is not. It is not cynical. This album is not playful (with the exception of "Crippled Inside"). At the end of the day, it isn't very fun. That's a significant departure from what so many of us loved about John Lennon -- the goofiness, the darkness, the slight of hand that disguised from listeners exactly how hard he was working and how much he cared about his art when he was in that other band of his. That doesn't make Imagine a bad album at all. But it's a little bit more emotionally needy than what we are accustomed to from Lennon. That forces it to become an album that needs its own time and place. An extra half star is added in recognition of King Curtis' sax and George Harrison's slide guitar. 3.5/5
J'suis pas super impressionné en comparant les projets solos des autres Beatles (All Things Must Pass, RAM, Ringo The 4th...). I mean, c'est plaisant mais sans plus, j'ai jamais été un Lennon fan anyway
Decent enough album that picks up the quality musically as it goes on, earlier anti war, mostly repetitive lyrics and tracks give way to beautiful and upbeat tracks in the back half.
Through circumstances beyond my control I was stuck listening to this album on repeat and developed stockholm syndrome. 3 stars up from my initial 1 star assessment
Really great start, but the other songs were not that exciting
good first song, the rest of it was okay
Lacks a bit of a kick. Not unpleasant but a bit boring
Meh, imagine is the only great song here
Classic!
McCartney supremacy! Okay. It’s fine. The title track is, of course, one of the worst songs of all time, but the second half of the album isn’t bad. But it’s all just missing “something.” That spark! That magic! That McCartney touch!
Wow, what an inspiring and thoughtful album. I hope there is nothing sinister lurking just below the surface of this fine gentleman
Imagine is great, the rest are okay.
Okay, but not for me
imagine- can really only think about that video of all of those celebrities singing this at the beginning of quarantine but still a good song! activist king crippled inside- honkey tonk damn jealous guy- okay! it’s so hard- immediately better than the others because of the horns i don’t want to be a soldier mama- funky funky!! the cadence of the words is weird as hell to me. like i don’t like how he’s saying it gimme some truth- guitar is an awesome instrument i like this one the best so far oh my love- awe this is cute how do you sleep?- omg sam smith mentioned! okay this one is good af how?- i mean he’s asking hard hitting questions! oh yoko!- i didn’t love it but not dispicable ! overall: 5/10 not really my kind of music but respectable !
1. I was kind of lukewarm on the title track before it was destroyed by self-important celebs. 2. He makes fun of McCartney’s Muzak in How Do You Sleep and the next song is the stupidest sappiest song I’ve ever heard. 3. The only songs I really, really like are the love songs. Oh Yoko is pure joy, and Oh My Love is delicately beautiful. 4. The rest is fine, Jealous Guy is ridiculously overproduced, and I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mamma is saved by it’s production.
This fucking guy. I know The Beatles wouldn’t have been half as good without him, but I like Paul’s contributions better. Also, every other Beatle released at least one solo album that was better than any of John’s solo stuff. This album was OK. I never liked the title track.
3.5 stars. Two stone-cold classics bookending what is a pretty good album. Give me a couple more like \"Oh Yoko!\" and it's an easy 4-4.5
This is balm to the soul.
HE SHOULD HAVE ENDED IT IWHT HOW!!!!! oh yoko is so dumb man like okay we get it you love her or whatever im so annoyed
Another OK album at best, could do without
nice lennon
John Lennon is a genius, at least as an artist, and of that there is no doubt. His time with 'The Beatles' is something that will never be repeated by any artist, simply one of the most influential guys in the history of music. But was he as good in his solo career as he was with The Beatles? Imagine is the second studio album to be released by the Beatles' pianist, writer and vocalist. This album was a total success in terms of sales due to the expectation that he had. It would be released in 1971, one year after the band's breakup. Expectations rose even higher with the release of 'Imagine' as the pre-album single, one of the most played songs in the history of music. The album has high peaks like 'Imagine' and 'Jealous Guy', but it also has low peaks. You always end up valuing the highs more, but in this specific case I think it's the right thing to do because it's a project with a very constant structure. It doesn't have a fixed sound at any point. It has many different styles in different parts of the project. There are songs that are Singer-Songwriter or Blues songs. This shows the variety of sounds he has. Quite well written - as we are used to - but with a very good piano that is maintained throughout the whole album. Also noteworthy is the work of former band member George Harrison who also has a very good participation in the album. I didn't manage to connect 100% with this project, but I liked it all the same.
This album was better than I expected. There are three or four really good songs on it, including "Imagine".
imagine isch absolut overplayed des grauens aber s isch ebe en guete song. nöd s perfekte meisterwerk wo lüt amel s gfühl hend aber guet. crippöed inside findi chli schwach, s südstaate band ding findi nöd ideal. jealous guy isch seehr geil sowohl vode produktion als au vom songwriting her. tönt super, geili chords strings sind schön, schlagzüg super mitem echo druf glaub? aaaah phil spector. und jim keltner ade drums au geil. its so hard isch cool aber macht nöd würkli viel. i dint wanna be a soldier mama isch geeil mitem reverb. gimme some truth het mi au nöd umghaue. oh my love isch seehr schön. george harrison ford ade giti öööh. sehr schön. how do you sleep slappt ebe au wenns en mega disstrack an paul isch. I don't know why but when it comes to the Beatles and his members´ music I have always felt this sort of distance, even without knowing much about it. This feeling, however, has been slowly been proven to be just a first wrong impresion. It's nice to say that I liked this album: my favorite songs were "jealous guy" and "how do you sleep?". Lately I have been into 70s music, so is not surprising neither.
The music is actually quite solid and I would give it 4 stars if not for... 1 - The longest track on the record is the most boring thing ever 2 - Like half of the album is John moaning about Yoko in quite a boring (also) way 3 - Bro insulted McCartney So 3 for that matter. Damn Yoko.
Was ok, I liked some tracks but honestly nothing really made a big impression
This feels like a 'Hey Paul look at me I'm solo now" kind of album. There are some really great tracks, but also some meh tracks. Lennon's got such a great creative mind that shines on tracks like Crippled Inside and How Do You Sleep?, but tracks like Jealous Guy just don't hit for me.
A bit of a mixed bag. Some truly great ideas and also some other songs. Favorites were Imagine, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, and How Do You Sleep?
Great stuff, but definitely drags on in parts. Gonna become a real harsh critic now.
Bit hit & miss. He's obviously a bit of a bellends but he has some talent. Do think he leaned into the rock/blues thing a bit too much, album sounded disjointed with how quickly he veered off from imagine before going back into the softer stuff. The unsubtle dig at Paul was actually one of the better tracks funnily enough. Alright album but zero chance it was making this list if it wasn't John Lennon.
Am I allowed to say I didn't love this album? I feel like, as groundbreaking and influential as they were, both John Lennon and Paul McCartney have been deified to a point where it feels like heresy to admit you don't love everything they've done (and it's worse for Lennon because of his murder). But I often feel like there's a quantity over quality issue with both of them. Because George had to fight so hard to get his songs on the albums, almost all of them are incredible, whereas there are a lot of Lennon-McCartney songs I personally think range from mediocre to downright bad. This album is no different. There's some good stuff here — Imagine is a classic for a reason. Crippled Inside is pretty good lyrically (the music is just okay). There's also a lot of meh stuff. I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier sounds like it's trying to be a Bob Dylan song, but it doesn't even remotely approach the level of lyrics Dylan would write. A lot of the album sounds derivative. Most of the songs are obvious musical ripoffs of the Black artists they were inspired by — Chubby Checker, et al. A lot of it sounds derivative of the Beatles too. The melody of Jealous Guy sounds like it's ripping off parts of A Day in the Life. Gimme Some Truth feels like it borrows from Strawberry Fields and Helter Skelter. Oh Love sounds a lot like Because. And while I guess it was brave to write Jealous Guy and shows he's capable of introspection and regret, I still find the whole thing of how he mistreated women and his first family pretty gross. It's ironic that he's taking pot shots against Paul in How Do You Sleep? and calling him a no-talent hack, considering how derivative and boring this album is (it also shows he is still a very jealous guy and hasn't changed much at all). The song How? kind of sums up this album for me. John had no idea who he was after The Beatles, so he threw a bunch of stuff at the wall to see what would stick. But none of what results on this album is very cohesive or original. 3/5
Nimibiisistä en ole koskaan pitänyt, mutta muuten ihan kuunneltava lätty. 2.5⭐
Definitely some shades of Beatles in here - "The Long and Winding Road" / "How?", "Honey Pie" / "Crippled Inside", a reference to Sgt. Pepper, etc. Interesting choices for a man who famously didn't want anything to do with the Beatles anymore.
Thoroughly mid. Some vaguely groovy beginnings that go on the same until you're bored. The mixing is also too scrambly for me. I do enjoy the fact Oh Yoko is 4 mins 20 long tho
Title track and jealous guy are great the rest in meh.
Не понимаю за что его и остальных Битлов так боготворят и превозносят. Обычная музыка, ничего особенно и сверхъестественного.
Meh
while it has cohesion, well produced sounds, and the classic voice and lyrics, I just have a harder time getting into the purer singer songwriter angle this has, and there's not much dynamism in the album as a whole. It has its strengths for sure, but I don't think I'll be reaching for this album when I'm looking for something I know I like.
I've always associated Lennon with the more experimental Beatles tracks, so I am a little disappointed that most of these songs are kind of generic blues songs. They are fine, but nothing exciting or anything I would want to return to.
tbh I expected something better, it was kinda mid to me
6.5/10 It takes extreme balls to include a diss track saying McCartney only did Yesterday & produces muzak on an album that is mostly boring with zero experimentation. Lennon does know his way around a lyric & quality melody, but seems comfortable to play in more backward-looking musical territory. He mostly seems disengaged and/pr unwilling to show any emotion - it is only How Do You Sleep? That you really feel him snarling. Over-reliance on some syrupy strings too - not in love with the production here. Best: Gimme Some Truth
I've always been on Team Paul. John Lennon hit women.
Kind of a reluctant 3 I guess.. don’t particularly care for John Lennon, don’t care for the title track, the album feels really safe compared even to some of his other stuff, let alone The Beatles best stuff but yknow.. he’s a Beatle, so what I like about their music shines through. Enough solid songs on here that I didn’t dislike it even though it wasn’t super memorable.
A ok to good album that's weighed down by history, A few really good songs like "Jealous Guy" and "Gimmie Some Truth" and the title track is good if you're a teenager looking for greater meaning to life, but for Lennon is was absurd hypocrisy since he was bigger than jesus and richer than god. And then Gal Godot had an idea....
Good. But only a few tracks Id play again
Partly heard before Saved 5/10 Top track: Imagine
Ganska chill roadtripvibes, skulle ge denna och förra på 3 stjärnor
3 out of 5, first listen. More folksy than I thought it would be and it was good for a listen, but not sure if it'd play it in regular rotation. George Harrison still might have the best solo Beatles album I've listened to (as of 7/10/2024) Might be better as I get older. Favorite song: Imagine Least favorite song: I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama
Mediocre.
“Imagine” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and if you think it’s naïve, you’re wrong and an ass. But it’s not enough to save the album. Half the songs go on for way too long and the album leaves you wanting for some of that signature Lennon non sequitur.
Imagine. Jealous Guy. Lots of blah. 65/100
Ol Lennon at it again. Dude hot boxed in some closet before taking this photo I think. Look, I'm not a huge Lennon fan, and I think I liked his other album better. Imagine is a classic, no doubt there, but I laughed pretty hard that a song called "Jealous Guy" has Yoko Ono on it, something about that is really funny to me.
Imagine Oh my love Jealous guy
It's both good and incredibly dull.
Okay these are the goofy notes i made 2 dayd ago: Nothing special, just sorta vibe Easy to listen to I feel like he could've put more effort into his music writing He a dickhead There was a teeny sax solo in that one overly repetitive song so thats cool I guess
Imagine slaps and the rest is like, chill ig Its a tad repetitive but none of it is objectively bad Like david bowie in a creative depression
This is another album that I'd always thought I should listen to or get but never got round to. Starting off with the classic title track was a good move. But the second was a real surprise with its country and western vibe, especially when you actually listen to the lyrics. On the whole it wasn't bad. Would I buy it, still undecided to be honest, but definitely worth a 3.
A bit hit and miss. But when it’s good it’s great. Jealous Guy and Imagine 👌 3 stars.
Good record with a couple of great songs.
Imagine is an all timer but has lost its impact due to ubiquity. Jealous Guy however, still never fails to raise goosebumps. Perhaps that's the power of love songs over political messages. Kind of annoying that Ocean Colour Scene nicked bits of the hook for Day we Caught the Train and consequently I am regularly reminded of that song while trying to enjoy this one. Steering away from assessing him as a human being and focusing on enjoying the album, this is a mix of stone cold classic slow ballads, and fairly mediocre rockers. Except Gimme Some Truth. I think the first version I heard of that was a live cover by The Wonder Stuff on the b side of Caught in my Shadow. How Do You Sleep is spiteful but pretty good, not great. Think I'm going down the middle, half of this album is bang average, some worldies however.
Enjoyed it more than I expected I would. Imagine, is a strong song though I find it hard to take seriously. I just don’t think it’s genuine. Jealous Guy is an excellent track with a great whistling section, Lennon admitting he’s insecure is kinda surprising. I’m not a Beatles stan so I absolutely found How do You Sleep to be hilariously entertaining, referring to Paul’s solo work as Muzak must’ve cut deep. Inconsistent overall but entertaining nonetheless. 3 stars
Imagine is probably the most overrated song of all time. I understand why it's so popular but today it's become so annoying, I skip it every time I hear it. Same goes for I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama, but this one is not only pretentious, its just bad a song. On the positive side, I really liked Jealous Guy, Oh My Love and Oh Yoko! These are all great songs, especially Oh Yoko! which is just plain love you sometimes feel towards your wife and you just can't contain it, it just goes out. It's cute. How Do You Sleep? would be a great diss track if not for one thing - Paul is so much better than John. The rest is filler, especially those bluesy/country tunes. Overall, this doesn't really feel like a consistent piece of work and I don't really like it except for a few songs. The rest is just covered under a huge pile of hypocrisy of John Lennon as a person vs artist and I can't shake it off. 2.5/5
Lennon and McCartney was one of the greatest songwriting teams of the past century, but neither of them was very good on his own.
It’s okay
Fulgte ikkje så godt med, så mulig eg kunne gitt da 4. Men mistenke at eg like Beatles bedre
First few tracks are rough but finds its footing when the acoustic guitar takes a back seat to piano, drums and electric. I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama is a fascinating track with layered, diverse percussion and strong guitar riffs, but the subject matter is what is most daring here — the same line is repeated throughout the track, but the content paired with Lennon’s varied delivery makes it work by delivering a crescendo of emotional resonance. Overall, the songwriting is simplistic and often repetitive — working sometimes, not landing at others. And I’d classify the vocal performance as creative, and sufficient, but not above average by any means. Listened to: walking through Prospect Park. Favorite tracks: IDWBASM, Oh My Love, Oh Yoko! (Kinda repetitive, John, lol)
Some great songs but also some duds
Ok. Det är ok.
Imagine och Jealous guy är riktigt bra låtar (är dock duktigt trött på Imagine och börjar undra om den verkligen är så bra, håller Jealous guy högre). Gillar även Gimme some truth och How do you sleep? (pluspoäng med ett diss track). Resten är helt okej. Pendlar mellan trea och fyra i betyg men landar i en stark trea.
One good followed by many meh ones. John needed Paul more than Paul needed John.
Несмотря на низкий процент (2/10 = 20%), не испытываю большой нелюбви к альбому.
Not much to say. Couple of all time great tracks
Sleepy, imagine is an all-time classic I've never really enjoyed listening to. This is probably because it is so overplayed. It is a beautiful album, but I'm currently not enjoying it. It's very john lennon
7/10 me gustó pero no me impresionó
Grown up nerds hate John Lennon because they loved him when they were pretentious little nerdlets and now they’re embarrassed and taking their anger at themselves over how cringy they were out on him. So any mention of John Lennon on the internet is accompanied by a never-ending stream of “wife-beater”, “remember when Gal Gadot at the beginning of Covid…”, and “a rich person saying ‘imagine no possessions’…” ad infinitum. I will spare everyone yet another repetition of those old saws because I think they say nothing relevant about the quality of this album. But please don’t doubt that I am sufficiently mortified that I wore round gold-colored wire-framed glasses when I was 16. Also, I think this story from Yoko is better John Lennon rage-bait than all of those other ones anyway: [Begin quote] In 1972 ,the night McGovern lost the election, John and I were invited to a party at Jerry Rubin's apartment in the Village. It was a gathering of New York liberal intellectuals, some artists, musicians and many journalists. John became totally drunk and pulled a woman into the next room and started to make love. Nobody could leave the party because all the coats were in that room. We were all sitting there trying to ignore what was happening. The wall was paper thin and you could hear the noise, which was incredibly loud. A considerate musician put a Dylan record on to offset the sound. But that did not drown out the sound coming from "the room." In the middle of all this, a New York celeb woman chose to make conversation with me. "I don't know how you feel about him... but we love him. He and his friends... what they did... but especially John... we all respect him tremendously. He's a great man... he is a wonderful man..." [end quote]. LOL. What an asshole. Anyway, this album is just okay. You could likely have not heard it before you died and been fine. “Oh Yoko!” is pretty good and makes for a great needle drop in “Rushmore”. In conclusion, this album is fine, John Lennon is no more a monster than every other rock star, and you need to forgive yourself for being a pretentious nerd when you were a kid.
Some good sadder & slow songs but most of it is filler. Crippled Inside is probably the most average song on the album but Jealous Guy is a highlight.
Well, it’s quite the song. The rest of the album, self indulgent and boring. Poor dumbass John. The sad example when a man follows his little brain. Can you imagine what the Beatles would have done, at the height of their careers, had a certain drugged-up twat not invaded their world? Imagine had he not moved with her to New York, but stayed in England, far from the weapons of my world?? Still pisses me off. You don’t have to imagine her now; she’s on full display. Fat and happy, living off undeserved royalties, calling her shit art, singing like a scared turkey in November. Yeah, I don’t like her. She broke up the Beatles. She can fuck right off!
Few really compelling timeless songs, most just the evolution of his sound.
This album has the unfortunate problem of being under the shadow of its overexposed title track, and the man who is considered by many to be the least favorite Beatle. I never hated John Lennon as a person or artist, but this is a case where the situation can go awry when one's ego isn't checked. In particular, the production throughout this album is rough, especially in the middle with songs like "It's So Hard" and "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier Mama" where the vocal mixing is all warbly, which does not work for John's already off-kilter delivery. That's before you get into the lyrics, where there are attempts at political songs but don't quite hit the mark or make a passive stance like with the title track that comes off as middling. There are some good songs here, such as "Jealous Guy" which paints a rather bleak picture of how hurt John must have felt to cause unintentional harm to others, and "Gimme Some Truth" and "How Do You Sleep?" which have some great slide guitarwork courtesy of fellow Beatle George Harrison. But those highlights are few and far between. Overall, this album's not bad, but I don't see myself revisiting it anytime soon.
Going into this album, I knew two songs: Imagine and Jealous Guy. It turns out that, for me, they are the only standout tracks. I was expecting a lot more.
“OH NO, IT’S JOHN lennon…”
This may seem like heresy, but I always thought there was something special about Lennon McCartney that's not there in either man's solo stuff. Imagin's not bad.
The person sucks but the art is incredible at times. Imagine is such a beautiful song. Jealous Guy has a good sound. Lots of filler songs here. The ego project kind of falls apart.
While listening to Imagine (fine song) I drifted off, because it has lost any power it had at this point. The next couple of tracks had me thinking back to how much I liked the George solo album. The production here does nothing for me. Gimme some Truth and Oh My Love sound a bit better, but his vocals detract from the quality. How Do You Sleep is interesting, more so because of the story. How, kind of works for me. Oh Yoko, I like the instrumentals. Rounded up to a 3
At a mere 31 years old, John Lennon had been through a ton. Good hits and songs, pre going crazy trying to get Yoko back in his good graces. Imagine is an all timer for sure. Think about writing one song as good as that, he wrote so many.
I mean, it's good. Just didn't click with me in a major way. Wasn't ever knocked off my socks by anything or even found a song I really glued to. I prefer a lot of Plastic Ono stuff to this, but you know -- to each their own.
A pretty decent album from John Lennon. Jealous Guy was good, the title track Imagine is a great song as well. The surprise on the album was "How do you sleep", obviously aimed at Paul McCartney, I did not expect the amount of anger towards him. Overall it wasn't bad
Decent album even if its a bit hypocritical
how do you sleep > imagine
It's a phenomenal album with some of John's best songwriting, but damn it is slow and boring in the long run. Would I hear it again? Sure Will it be in the next 2-5 years? No.
- didn't know John Lennon had so much angst - music was chill but he has such a good voice
I feel like this album is just "Imagine" and friends. Nothing else really lives up to that song. Not that any of it is bad, it all still has the John Lennon vibes, but none of it is as good as Imagine
Better than the George Harrison album, but still a bit dull. The title track is so preachy that it's hard to take anything else Lennon does seriously. Would give 2.5 stars if possible but I'll be generous and round up
Surprised that for me this is not passing the test of time . A smattering of classics interspersed with averageness.
Like so many idealistic teenagers who fell in love with The Beatles, Lennon was my favorite, and the only one I had any interest in delving into after their break up. Like so many others who fell into that trap, once you realize Lennon didn’t quite embody the life he sung about, it’s hard to see him as being anything more that stuck up his own ass. When you think about how he had Beatles Fuck You Level of fame and fortune, it becomes a lot easier to understand how he wrote that legendary title track. It sure would be nice to live in a world with no greed or hunger, but it’s also the kind of thought that only people like John Lennon could realistically afford to sit around and think about. Last time I checked, he didn’t sell all his possessions, either. I normally wouldn’t harp so much on the hypocrisy found in lyrics, but his writing ability was sort of Lennon’s edge compared to Harrison or McCartney, and I simply don’t believe he brings as much substance as he gets credit for post-Beatles. I personally think All Things Must Pass has more to say on life and the world than anything found on Imagine, but maybe that’s just me. The writing isn’t all bad, but its front and center, and still the thing he gets the most credit for, and I simply am not buying it. All that said, I’ve always enjoyed Lennon’s singles, and that’s still the case here (outside of the dreadful title track obviously). Jealous Guy is a great song, even if it is repurposing A Day in the Life, but the stand out for me is certainly How Do You Sleep? This is maybe the only song here that comes close to The Beatles more experimental side, alongside I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier, which enters the heavy drugged out territory that Lennon occasionally excelled at. It all ends with the catchy Oh Yoko!, but much like his peaceful platitudes, I find his Yoko-inspired tracks to be absolutely groan inducing. This isn’t the worst version of that, but it’s also not a song I search for in the rare moments I do return to Lennon’s solo catalog. At the end of the day, I find Lennon’s solo career to be of the greatest hits variety, as opposed to the collect every album kind, and I don’t believe this album would be on a list like this (or so many others) if it were not for what came before it.
John Lennon post-Beatles does very little for me. Imagine is also kinda ruined by that awful Covid sing along video. Well-made record but not my favorite.
Not as bad as I was anticipating. Favorite track: Crippled Inside
I like it, but probably more than I would if this were some random person’s album. Imagine is definitely the stand out song. His writing style is pretty straightforward and understated, which I like, but his celebrity and history definitely helps to differentiate his music from others’. 3.6
What to say. There's some decent stuff here - the music is good, but the vocals sound like shit, both in production and performance. Lennon can sing, so why doesn't he? Some songs feel complete while others sounded like a demo. If this was just some dude putting out an album, it would have rightfully tanked. 2.9
Decent
Imagine is one of the most iconic songs of all time. That being said, the album is just kinda meh? I'll admit that John is my least favorite of the Beatles.
Not bad, but far from great. Not nearly as good as his work with the Beatles. Favorite song: how do you sleep
A bunch of songs by a famous bloke. Didn't grab me.
Overrated album, has some great songs but I don't get why Imagine is so popular - easily eclipsed by Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth.
Tämä on ehkä tasaisempi kuin Plastic Ono Band muttei yhtä häkellyttävä. Balladit ja hitaat rockit ovat vaihtelevassa määrin kiinnostavia. Oh Yoko! taas on upea lopetus.
overrated, some good songs tho
Legendary
It was ok.
Easy to listen to, obviously the eponymous imagine is on this, which is nice.
Not a hugeee fan of this record, Lennon was a strange bloke, but I have to hand it to him, he knows how to construct a song. Classic songwriting, and musicality, obviously beatles-esque, but I really didn't like his voice on much of this album. Although I prefer Roxy Music's rendition of 'jealous guy', it would have to be my standout from this record. Unfortunately 'imagine' has been tainted by the radio for me, overplayed to the point where it actually instills fear instead of hope in me. Unexpectedly liked 'how do you sleep?' , but could not stop laughing at 'Oh Yoko'. Yeah this isn't my favourite record at all. But I can see why it's liked, just not for me.
I could not get over the whingeing and whining of lennon's vocals and lyrics- it made me want to turn it off entirely. that being said, there are definitely moments I loved, and I really enjoyed george's input with the guitar. The two last tracks actually made me cringe sooo bad \"how can i give love when i dont know how to give\"- yeah we know that one john. skips: \"how?\" favourites: \"jealous guy\" and \"how you do you sleep\"
3.5 I am a big Beatles fan, but I am not very familiar with their solo stuff (except for All Things Must Pass, which I love). I had only heard the title track before this listen. I was expecting to like this much more than I did. I guess the band really was greater than the sum of its parts.
(Atm) I’m not too much into the Beatles. Obviously his/their style carries over to his work as solo artist. But surely it has its qualities and legitimation. Nevertheless I spent the rest of the day listening to Radiohead.
"Hi, I'm John Lennon. I feel things very deeply. I get angry a lot. So I wrote some songs about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes." Not entranced by this. Some good grooves. Some misses. Don't mind hearing this. But I probably won't revisit too often. Unexpected banger: Jealous Guy.
I like this album, I’ve heard it before, but I honestly think he needs the rest of the Beatle Boys to make magic.
It's a good album that got overshadowed by the legacy of its title song. There is a bit of irony in some of the lyrics- which Steely Dan would criticize a year later in the song "Only a Fool Would Say That", and it is funny going from songs about peace and love and political protest to a Paul McCartney diss track. Separating it from the man himself though, it sounds pretty solid. I will admit there's not a ton here that I see myself coming back to.
Hmmm
Top tracks: Imagine, Jealous Guy, How Do You Sleep?
I have a really hard time listening to John Lennon's music. As time has gone on the more I've learned about him, the less I like him and it makes it hard to appreciate his music. Listening to this I tried to put that aside to listen to the music. He really was an amazing song writer. He just had "it" and knew how to make songs that would become an earworm. I don't like track 6 ("I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama"), the blues guitar is good but other than that its pretty uninspiring. Also not a fan of the last track "Oh Yoko!" But that could just be my distaste for Yoko Ono in general
Hate it
Bluesy-er than I expected. it's a classic but didn't blow me away
Seems like maybe he needed Paul after all
The album has so many different kinds of music. I loved the bluesy feel of the second one. Although it has a sad tone overall it’s also so peaceful and calming
Classic album but it didn’t capture my attention the way I thought it would. Favorite song is Oh Yoko!
Koheesio uupuu.
Tricky one. I liked this more than a lot of other albums I rated a 3 but also not as much as ones I rated a 4. I'm not a fan of the production.
Imagine is a nearly perfect song - a combination of beautiful melody and moving lyrics. I bought the album many moons ago only to be somewhat disappointed by the rest. It’s sad, really, that the album devolved from “Imagine” all the way down to a Paul McCartney diss track with “How Do You Sleep.” It just feels so petty by comparison.
Imagine, a timeless song will be played forever. Jealous guy, a good song, very honestly written. The rest of the album to me was not good so it averages out to me.
Good album - but not more :-) Glorification not necessary and not needed.
I thought there were like maybe 4 good songs, Imagine, the one thing u cant hide is when your crippled inside.
Was more diverse than Imagine as the song makes one expect, but imo didn't reach Beatles' prime.
Overated...
I enjoyed most songs (not the soldier one tho it was really bad and way too long). Crippled Inside was surprisingly good, banjo and all, and also Imagine obviously. The whole album was coherent and I don't know the storylines behind it but I still enjoyed it. I would give it higher but the soldier song exists so 3/5.
Kind of chill, this guy was definitely a Beatle. Not anything groundbreaking for me but I liked most of the songs. Obviously Imagine was the only song I had heard beforehand, and it remains my favourite song on the album after hearing the rest. Other favourites are Oh My Love, Oh Yoko!, Crippled Inside, and on a good day, Jealous Guy. I don't really have much to say about it other than it was nice to space out to and it's the type of album that I'll remember exists and then listen to some songs off of it every now and then in the future. While writing this I took a break to read some Wikipedia and turns out he hit his first wife, I guess that explains Jealous Guy. Also yeah the soldier song was actually agonizingly long like I got the message bro don't worry. 3, just average to me
kinda mid
In spite of having heard 'Imagine' about a 100 times over my lifetime, this is the first time I've actually listened to a Lennon album from beginning to end. At first, I felt that the rest of the album wouldn't compare to the titular first song. And that assumption was mostly correct. I was surprised by how blues-y the whole thing is, but it's a really nice blend for the ears.
Was one of my Dad's favourites. I love Imagine the track, but rest of the album is so-so for me.
All of the songs just felt okay, “Oh Yoko!” is the only song I see myself returning to.
Gentle and dreamy. Nice for a contemplative sunday or an early morning.
I didn't expect to hear songs in the style of Imagine. I always thought of JL's solo work to be Beatle-esq but I enjoyed the 50's inspired songs, along with the more somber sounding tracks
Take away "Imagine", and the rest of the album is pretty good. That song is bleak and meaningless.
Good album
Not too surprised that the only track I've heard hear is Imagine. Nothing else has jumped out so far. A bit of a rock-a-billy vibe.
Imagine is one of the worst, most saccharine and tone deaf songs ever written, the rest is mid Beatles B-side rejects.
Not bad. He works better in the confines of a group though…
I might be being too generous with 3. The first four songs are very good. The rest of the album is boring, and the final song almost killed me
My dad used to love this album. It is boring.
Eh
Not a bad album but I think I was expecting more from one of the frontmen from the Beatles. Imagine is a great song and I enjoyed a few of the other songs. This album didn't really feel like it was changing the game from what had been released at the time and felt closer to a Beatles album without Ringo, George and Paul
excepting the title track I'm not a huge fan. 3 stars
3.5, imagine big booty butts, big booty, boobies too, just imagine a big pair of boobs and a butt
Hit and miss with a couple of songs in particular could be done without (looking at you Mama and Yoko). I was surprised to see this was the remastered edition because the songs did not seem well balanced to my untrained ear. I was more interested to look at the many versions of this album including the raw recordings and alternate mixes available as I personally do not think the linked album is the definitive choice - this is based on a lack of familiarity with what the original recording and I’m sure aficionados may disagree with this statement. Worth noting his self admitted violence towards women is absolutely deplorable and I had no great desire to listen to his work but have not factored this into my score
I know its a legendary album but honestly lennon's solo work don't hit the same as the beatles.
kinda tuff especially 2nd half bro a real deal geeker
I had not listened to this for a long time. Although a Beatles fan, I never really got into Lennon's solo stuff. To me he came across as a bitter and angry at the world, and I think this album reflects that. I always expected more from his songs, but the lyrics feel forced and a bit naive.I'm sure I didn't feel that way as a younger man. A few good songs, but it's 3/5 for me.
Solid album by one of the greats. Several I recognized. Can tell why Lennon considered great.
Good. Other than imagine, not memorable. I did put it on while I was driving around this weekend and enjoyed it.
This one is hard because there is nothing bad about the album but it is somewhat generic. I know John Lennon is a big name but the music in this on is very standard for the style. It is somewhere between 2 and 3 stars
Not a bad album overall. Imagine was definitely the best song in here. 3/5
I did not enjoy it to much.
It was subpar
Some great songs.
1 classic song surrounded by ok songs
Like the song, was underwhelmed with full listen of album
Where Plastic Ono Band hit me hard, this album has never really done it for me.
Good album but what a POS
As a solo artist he could never quite find what made The Beatles so good.
6.5/10
Slight lennon but still lennon
Imagine is a good song, even if it has been ruined for me somewhat by those celebrities singing it at the start of the pandemic. The rest of the album is ok, but doesn’t measure up to the Beatles.
The album was alright, nothing special. Imagine is obviously a big tune. Good album length, wouldn't want any more. Probably won't listen again.
Finally I can answer the question: Paul or John? Paul, definitely Paul.
Ballads are good, iconic, but not loving the album as a complete work of art.
Have you ever thought about how weird the name 'Elvis' is? I mean, that's a really weird name if you've never heard of the singer. 'Madonna,' is also a weird name. How many friends do you know named Madonna, Yoko or Jesus (Jee-zuhs, not Hay Zeus)? Welp, John isn't very unique, but John is versatile! John can be the name of a place you can go pee and drop a deuce, and can also be a man who seeks services from a prostitute. And if you listen to this album, he doesn't believe in Jesus or Elvis (no word on Madonna), but he does believe in 'me,' Yoko and John (the person who wrote the song, not the other Johns) ... Anyway, I've heard some of these on a best of Lennon and they're all kinda boring and unremarkable. On a ranking scale, I'd score the following in most to least remarkable: Elivis - such a weird name! Yoko - the devil herself! Jesus - two pronunciations! John - Such a versitle word! Imagine (this album)
This album starts out like a rocket at its apogee about to return to earth. It’s out of this world but continually reduces from that peak. Imagine is great. Crippled Inside is pretty good. Then there is a run of songs that, while they are interesting, don’t quite standout to me.
Some great songs, some that unsurprisingly sounded like Beatles filler tracks
some classics
The more I listen to John on his own, the more overrated I find him to be. He's still very good, clearly, but there's just so little about his solo (& duo work with Yoko) that moves me at all. Favorite track: Gimme Some Truth
Solid album. Would listen again.
Enjoyed several songs. Others were just meh.
More of Paul guy I guess. A few interesting tracks but overall not much to get excited by.
Imagine, John Lennon No es uno de mis favoritos, me encanto la canción Oh My love
This might be heresy but take away the title track and this feels like an album of Beatles' b-sides and outtakes. I said what I said.
while i do recognize the irony of john singing 'imagine no possessions' from his grand piano in his giant mansion, he's undeniably really good at writing songs. fav tracks: gimme some truth, oh my love, how?
Plain Jane. Or Yoko.
It's fine. Nothing stands out quite as much as Imagine. Fine background music. I can imagine it being played in the background of smokey rooms. But maybe that's influenced by the cover image.
One great song, the rest of the album not so much
It was all right. Probably wouldn’t listen again. John Lennon is quiet.
Gentle rock, some folky influences
A few gems but otherwise I’m not sure what the hype is
I think we all know why we are here. Imagine. I will say, i do think Crippled Inside is a funny lil tune to add to my playlist titled "upbeat songs with really depressing lyrics" Other than that, the album in whole didnt leave too much of an impression on me. not bad though, i mean cmon- its john lennon!
3.5, zapravo solidno
Meh.
Commentary on the Vietnam War "Imagine" "Jealous Guy" "Oh My Love" "How Do You Sleep" (Attack of Paul McCartney)
Calming and I liked some while others were simple and weird
Not great Not bad. Just meh
as much as i love the beatles, this aint it
Those later echoey vocal acoustics. Favorite song was "Crippled Inside."
Best Songs: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy Listen Again: Maybe
High craft and the usual structural experimentation. Lacks the Macca counterweight. It’s nice, but that’s about it. Favorite track: I don’t want to be a soldier man.
3/5
First time listening to a solo Lennon album front to back. I liked quite a bit of it! Added 3 or 4 songs to my playlist. I definitely vibe with his more slow and low key songs compared with the more rock heavy tracks. Still hard to match his stuff with Paul McCartney.
Hate him or love him John Lennon brought people some of the best music ever made. Unfortunately most of that was with the Beatles and not on his own. This album is good, sure but it’s still heavily lennon trying to say he’s smarter and a better individual than many other people. I don’t dislike this album, but John Lennon did have less enjoyable solo albums than George and Paul. 6.5/10
Ja schon gute Bekannte Lieder dabei
Imagine is a great song.. the rest of it just seemed way too mellow to really enjoy.
He was definitely a gifted songwriter, but Christ was Lennon an awful person. This album especially shows off his faults and makes work like the title track sound hollow. The good stuff is quite good, but I could never get behind that song. C
Especially imagine is greag
Чёт мне не зашло. Есть прекрасная "Imagine", прикольный припев в "Power to the people", но в остальном змеиное шипение Леннона раздражает. Не хочется переслушивать.
I actually think there's some peaches on this album. Great airport too.
Imagine isn't good enough to carry the rest of this album, or make me forget that he was a bit of a creep. It's made worse by how good the Beatles were. I've rounded up 2.5.
i’ve actually enjoyed this album more in the past. felt a bit off and on. dude was definitely harboring a lot of negativity that he put into this.
It's alright. Bit overhyped
вот этот альбом я никогда не слушал целиком будет интересно.
So glad Gal Gadot gave this the popularity it clearly lacked. It'd be hard to say all the songs aren't well-made and executed, especially considered the bias most people would have going into it. But overall it is not music that excites or engages me very much; sometimes it felt like the songwriting was drawn out too long and I wasn't too crazy about the jamming that came with it in like half the songs. I did end up wondering if I'd like Paul's solo stuff more, but I did appreciate a wide-ish range of tones and styles in this record. 6/10
I knew Imagine and Jealous Guy. The rest was unfamiliar. It’s less gritty and more Beatles-like than Plastic Ono Band. I’d want to hear it again.
I liked this one considerably more than the previous Lennon album in this mix. Almost gave it a 4, as it felt more fully realized and had several songs I liked quite a bit.
Some great songs, some forgettable ones.
Well jeg er sgu lidt skuffet. Imagine er selvfølgelig vild, men havde forventet mere af Lennon! Min yndlingssanger i Beatles. Synes faktisk bare den var kedelig. Stripped down og uambitiøs
Good. Always makes me sad though, (especially Imagine) because of his death. Also the Beatles broken up.
Decent soundtrack to doing pot with a bunch of homeless dudes
Like his stuff with the Beatles more. Plus Yoko sucks.
3/5. Pretty mid.
Imagine... I'm not a fan of John Lennon... :,)
I want to like it more but it doesn’t stick with me much
Loved the first few songs but then the record faded for me.
Fav: Gimme Some Truth because it was used in Everyday Chemistry
good start tailed off, blues
Not a massive fan of JK solo but on reflection contains some decent songs. The title track sucks.
I liked it and imagine is a great song.
62/100
Let's start by getting this out of way: Yes, John Lennon was not a great person. However, I am here to listen to and review these albums primarily by how good they are, with the cultural impact of the album being the only other thing that even remotely impacts the rating. With that said, this album is just kind of alright. First of all, it does kind of peak at the beginning with the title track. There are other good songs on here, but I do feel like the titular "Imagine" is probably the best one. John's singing is pretty decent as well. The songs topics range from simple declarations of love for Yoko to what is arguably one of the first popular diss tracks in "How Do You Sleep?". That's honestly kind of funny. The instrumentals are quite good at times, and I really like George Harrison's guitar work. Overall, not the best work from a Beatle that I've heard, but it still isn't bad. High 3/5.
After listening to it again, realizing that while its good its not very inventive or exciting, one of the things the Beatles did so well but John could not carry on his own.
Fun times. Imagine is that bitch. Verder niet heel fantastisch
Not the best solo album from any of the beatles, but it's still pretty good.
The album is good until John Lennon opens his mouth. 5/10
Pretty decent
Love John Lennon but the album wasn’t anything to write home about. It was good with nice songs.
I totally get why he's a legend, but this was just so easy on my ears its kinda boring.
It was all right, but he's just not as great on his own.
Just mid. I remember liking his solo stuff more, but now I realize only a few songs here and there are decent.
Good album, I feel like the production is patchy between songs. Obviously Imagine is the big single from this but its so overplayed. Jealous Guy is a highlight and How Can You Sleep being a great song albiet a lyrical attack on McCartney
This is an OK album, I am not anti John Lennon. I really love Jealous Guy, I just don't understand why "imagine" is lorded up as such a great song, it's really really basic. The kind song a teenager would write after learning two chords on a piano. John Lennon has some amazing songs, obviously. But Imagine is not one of them.
Meh, didn't really care for this that much. It's just a bit boring and uninspiring, and I don't think Lennon really held up musically without the rest of The Beatles, it seems. It was just okay, but the best and most popular song was at the beginning and nothing else really hooked me. Maybe I'll enjoy some of his other solo works more if/when they pop up, but I can't say I'll actively seek them out before then. Favourite: Imagine
It was good but didn’t love it
I liked some of the songs, but particularly didn't I don't wanna be a soldier mama. I really like the song Jealous Guy and Oh my love. 3/5 stars
Deeply personal yet sort of schmaltzy. An interesting album for 1971 mixing big overproduced string and synth sounds with hyper personal lyrics that could stand alone as poetry. Lennon expresses a tangle of emotions, political ideals, and musical styles.
I went in knowing only the title song, but the entire album ended up being solid
This album reminds me of a decent steak with just salt and pepper. Yeah, it tastes good and you can't think of anything 'bad' about it, but it leaves so much to be desired. It sounds bland and doesn't evoke most of the emotions that went into creating the music.
it was ok stand out tracks: imagine, crippled inside
Very calming relaxing album, great one to start my 1000 album journey on!
Bra album, några väldigt bra låtar men också en del som inte e så minnesvärda Bästa låtar: How do you sleep, Imagine
yeahhhhh
J'ai été surprise par la diversité des styles (piano et voix, rock plus américain...). Textes simples mais engagés et touchants.
johhhhhhn
Its like listening to the Beatles but not as good. Imagine is great if it wasnt tainted by fucking celebrities and covid. There were a few decent songs and some that i wished ended. Nothing from this album is going on any playlist of mine.
The album ends on an high note with the wonderfully twee “Oh Yoko!”.
Standout: Imagine (obviously) IDK a bit too dated maybe?
Being honest this is a tale of two halves. The first five songs are incredible before falling off of a cliff in the second five. Still Lennon sounds great and he’s a pop culture icon for a reason.
It was fine.
