I mean, it's classic country music, so it's not going to be my thing. Dolly's a class act though. There's lots of personality in these songs, and they're nicely put together. This one is easy listening enough to work for me.

I'm pro-Dolly, but I don't have a lot of time to listen to her music.

Probably hurt by the fact that I still associate Dolly Parton with the Hannah Montana tv show

Dolly Parton is a force. Stylistically, this album is a bit more towards the Nashville style than I prefer, but Dolly is such a good story teller those elements fade into the background. Lyrically, this is exactly what I want from country music; honest expressions of real life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sprinkle in Dolly's wry sense of humor and you have a truly compelling set of songs. The backing band really understood the assignment here, playing just enough but never in the way and letting Parton's sweet warble lead the way. That's not to say Dolly can't hold her own, she's just selective about showcasing her power on songs like "Mystery of the Mystery" and "Here I Am." Kudos, too, to the Nashville Edition. Backup singers are normally a huge sticking point for me, and they avoid the pitfall of saccharine "oohs" and "aahs" and add real texture and beauty to the music. I've got to say somewhere, too, that I was not expecting the "Walk on the Wild Side style bassline on "Early Morning Breeze" (though this predates that by a year). You know what? I can't find any fault with "Coat of Many Colors," so fuck it, 5 stars. This is a perfect country album.

The way I see you - instrumentation is scrummy 7.1/10 9. Here I Am - drake snake would go hard for a verse here 6/10 10. A Better Place To Live - this is the song i imagine the normal 9-5 worker would sing while driving in their deisel-guzzling car in the 70's. Overall kinda slop its like dua lipa but for 60's bitches. Only redeemable part is the groovy ass guitar and instrumentals. 3/10 final rating.

Dolly is such an infectious singer and person that it's really hard not to love her, even if you are not a country fan. She is iconic and not without a reason! Very nice album and it was a great listen.

better than expected!

The album consists of 10 radio-ready ditties, mostly sweet and sentimental stories with a wry twist of humor in a few. There are some good studio musicians playng a nice mix of styles - country, gospel, bluegrass and I swear I hear some rock licks bangin' along in there in places. Whether you like the warbly-country vocal style or not (I don't) Ms. Parton is a skilled singer with a great voice. I enjoyed the listen more than I expected.

Love Dolly, of course. This album is beautiful, touching, and heartbreaking.

It's hard for me to make myself listen to country music, but this classic country (Dolly, Merle, Hank, Willie, Johnny, etc) always surprises me. And who doesn't like Dolly Parton? This is by no means a new favorite, but I enjoyed listening to it. "The Mystery of the Mystery" is a nice reflection on how little we know (more God than I usually care for, but not obnoxious). "Early Morning Breeze" is a nice reminder to enjoy what you've got. I wouldn't say any one track stood out to me among the others, but I wasn't wondering when it would be over.

Very pleasant all around. Travelin Man and My Blue Tears are the standouts. (acoustic version of My Blue Tears is fantastic, actually). 3.7

I am not a Nashville "pick up truck and a dog" fan. To me this is cookie cutter bland Nashville. Lots of mountain nostalgia. There is some good pedal steel buried in there.

I enjoyed listening to this album for all the right reasons…the most important being Dolly. Her favorite song she ever wrote was the title song. A great example of real life's inspiration. Lots of “Momma” in this album. She is a living legend.

I haven’t listened to Dolly Parton very much. This album is awesome. Pretty funky bass parts at times and the songs came off as psychedelic rock/old country collisions. Wonderful singing of course

Seems like I've known of Dolly Parton my whole life but only know her biggest hits. Not a country music fan, would not have listened to this when I was younger but I'm certain now I'll listen to it again. Solid and enjoyable musically, Dolly's voice (a true warble) would not typically be my cup of tea but, again, it's so familiar and she really conveys emotions well without crossing into maudlin even though some of the lyrics do.

You have to really like Dolly's wobbly voice and steel guitars to get through this one with a smile on your face. Far too American, far too boring, and only trace amounts of musicality. Lovely bass though.

I hate most country music, but Dolly is one of the exceptions. Her songwriting is so good. While I don't think I'd reach for this album often, I did enjoy it quite a bit. Very few can turn a phrase like Dolly does.

I think the first four tracks and She Never Met a Man are great, bursting with personality. The rest are just alright. The twist in Traveling Man made me laugh out loud.

I have listened to a few live and studio Dolly albums but never this release. I don't think I ever knew what release to really listen to so I always found a song or two and moved on. Coat of Many Colors really stands out from my previous listens. It starts with a strong concept, if not a bit corny in classic Dolly fashion, before diving into various tales of heartbreak and love. The best Dolly tracks are where her distinct voice comes together with the backing musicians to take you to an outdoor valley where she sings you tales. Early Morning Breeze is the ultimate example of this.

I have never really listened to Dolly Parton. This album was a breath of fresh air for me, the message and the tunes were beautiful. I guess there is a reason she’s one of country musics greats:)

Disclaimer: I’m not a big fan of country and Dolly’s helium-infused vocals wouldn’t be my first choice of what to listen to, but I really enjoyed this. Boy, was it sad at times. I felt a little tear trying to break through. Poor little girl with the dodgy coat. Sniff, sniff. Girl whose fella is leaving her for someone else. Sniff, sniff. Extra star for the dodgiest rhyming and made-up-wordery and grammar. “I sure wouldn’t telling” “I didn’t told her” “I reckon I ought’n’t” “Don’t think I ever knowed you either” She gets away with it because of her cute Southern accent 😃

I loved this album for the brevity. Good songs. Dolly knows how to tell a story. I agree that the album at the end lags. I think because the last two songs run together in style. Overall a winner. Best Song: Traveling Man.

It can be hard to know where to even start with a legendary artist who has so many albums. You could do a lot worse than this one for Dolly. I hear so many contemporary artists that I love in this music (Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires) - the DNA is inextricable. Too many standouts to name, but I might choose “Early Morning Breeze” as my personal favorite. I love groove of certain 70s country tunes. Glad to have had the weekend to give this one several spins.

Dolly is an underrated songwriter. Wagoners songs she did not as good.

Another banger I'd never listened to. I've been into Dolly conceptually for so long. This was a great album for getting into her work. It's so unbeat. So real and vulnerable, while still having a sense of light hearted joy. It's weird how dense it is in that way. So upbeat. So serious. So Dolly.

I've always avoided Dolly Parton's music but this album has some excellent tracks.

I've heard it said many times that Dolly Parton is one of the greatest living American songwriters, but I hadn't heard one of her albums start to finish before. Now I have, and yeah. I think she's one of the greatest living American songwriters. I don't really care for Porter Wagoner's songs, so alas I must detract a star. Highlights: Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Place To Live

Well written songs and tasty basslines

Classic. The best.

Nashville was a system that could, given the right artist and intent, produce artifacts that manage to sound both modest and flawless decades down the line. This is one of them. The personnel listing takes up a phone screen of space, but they seamlessly swap and flow from track to track, all framing Parton as she briskly catalogues a panoply of emotional states and incident. This isn’t my vibe today, but if offered a perfectly-weighted galette, I’m not going to sniff and say nah mate, I only eat trifle on Mondays. No-one cares a good cock about Trifle Monday, Simon.

Quite fond of this, listened many times through the day. Dolly is a good singer and fine songwriter. I'll spare you the David Brent quote

I don’t like country music. I might enjoy a song or two, but after a short while it grates on my nerves. However, I’ve developed a higher tolerance after having to endure the entire Nity Gritty album, so I’m not as opposed to country as, say a month ago. On the positive side here is Dolly’s voice, which is absolutely phenomenal and cleverly enough stands out in the mix. Also? the title track is such a good song, which Dolly delivers with all the emotion she van muster. Unfortunately, the rest of the songs just aren’t as good and despite of the album’s short running time, I get bored. Only Early Morning Breeze blows some relief at the end.

This is really good 70s country, which is pretty expected since Dolly is a queen of country. There are a few things that I'm glad we moved away from that are mainstays in this album, mostly the "bouncy" bass lines and some of the plucky guitar work. But those were standards of the time, and also just minor issues.

Lots of fun songs, Dolly is an amazing gem of a singer (and a person). Would listen again.

Simple and stripped back so Dolly's voice can carry it, and she does it well. The title track especially is super sweet, songs all about heartbreak and love. A very pleasant listen.

Country queen in all aspects. Everything she sings is beautiful. A country legend, An all-around nice person.

Most of my very early music listening was focused on bluegrass and country, and at around age 7-8, I got a hold of a cassette tape with Minnie Ripperton on one side, and Dolly Parton’s Greatest Hits on the other. I had already known who Dolly was from some of her songs I heard on country station US95 - especially singing with Kenny Rogers “Islands In The Stream,” and the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (which my dad brought me to see age 6 😬), and of course 9 to 5 (also seen in the theater with Dad, age 4)… but I just loved every song on that tape, with her sweet voice and storytelling lyrics, like on Coat of Many Colors and Travellin’ Man (one of my favorites), and so I played the Dolly side of it over and over, until it was practically worn out. I still have it somewhere. So those two songs I had heard, but not the rest of this album. It was great. You can so appreciate how young her voice is, high and clear. I loved Here I Am, also the high harmonies on My Blue Tears. And she shows somewhat bold writing for country music standards as far as the times go, with She’s Never Met A Man (telling truths about hos), but especially on If I Lose My Mind (👀‼️wow). Anyway, excellent album.

Yee haw, this album is great. Traveling Man is down right scandalous. I can't believe how much innuendo is on a record with gospel songs. And does the mother end up eloping with the traveling Man at the end? Wild

Brings back memories. When the country albums came on in my house, often it meant that we were getting company. So I grew to associate Dolly and Porter and Loretta and Charlie (Pride and Rich!) with happy times.

Good vibe but is not my style

There is no doubt that Dolly is an iconic and talented artist, but I still found myself finding this album to be a little too repetitive. I like how personal the album is, but if I don’t love the music then I don’t care about the lyrics. Most songs are beautiful, but if you asked which song was which I wouldn’t be able to answer.

Old fashioned country!

I like this a lot. Very varied and the instrumentation is interesting. Here I Am - Carole King vibes Early Morning Breeze - if you stripped it down would sound like something from the Hylics soundtrack Earlier tracks remind me of the Japanese Folk/Country duo(?) Humbert Humbert who I love. SOme bits remind me of Candypants too (the Album with the singer from The Stool Pigeons))

Dolly Parton is an icon and this album is just a brick in that impenetrable icon wall. When I pulled her up on Apple Music this was the SEVENTH album in her "Essential Albums" section. The songs here are gorgeous and sincere; Dolly invites you in, pours you a cup of tea, and says "I know it's getting dark but you can stay as long as you like." So I played this thing through three times.

Huge respect for the icon, but this is really not my vibe.

Old school country but of the upbeat variety. Dolly's voice is incredibly sweet and pure and that gives this record a very welcoming, comfortable feel --more of the "sunshine, picnic, enjoying the outdoors" country than the "dive bar, hard drinking, heartbreak" kind. I enjoyed this album, though I'm not a huge country fan, and could see a few of the songs making it on a playlist.

Expected this one to be more upbeat, but it didn't capture my attention like I thought it would - maybe because I was doing things while it was on, but it didn't make me want to stop and listen.

After seeing the other ratings I was expecting to hate this but I think it was a solid middle of the road album! A bit slow paced for my liking but emotive and authentic.

Classic Dolly Parton. A well rounded record and contextually important historical milestone of country and folk. Here I am is by and far a stand out for me. Beautiful record for driving through the countryside, making dinner, or dreaming about a long forgotten pastoral way of life. 4/5.

I'm not a big country fan. Or at all, really. Dolly is a lot more palatable than most, though, and there were some genuinely nice and funny songs on here. Am I likely to put this album on? No. But it was enjoyable enough.

This album seems to be highlighted mostly for its very tender songs like the title track, “Early Morning Breeze”, or “Here I Am”. But this album also demonstrates Parton’s versatility in a way that some of her other great albums (like Jolene, my personal favorite) do not. “Traveling Man” in particular is a fantastic song with humor, akin to Johnny Cash/Shel Silverstein’s “A Boy Named Sue” or some of Jim Steinman’s songs for Meat Loaf. It’s that kind of hilarity: the narrator is in love with an older traveling man and wants to run away with him, but she’s afraid to tell her mom because she knows her mom would disapprove. Meanwhile the traveling man is getting with the narrator’s mom and runs away with her instead. Great song on a solid album.

Listening to this I realized that for as many of her songs as I love, I've never actually listened to a Dolly album. This one is mostly great - Waggoner's songs are the only ones that really drag it down. Dolly's material shines.

I’m not a big fan of country music as a whole, and I really felt like a lot of the instrumentals, especially towards the end of the album were quite bland. However she does have a great voice and that makes the album much more enjoyable. My favourite song was definitely the title track

I have a great appreciation for Dolly Parton. The surprise song for me was “If I lose my Mind”. My favorite was “Here I Am.

seeing how much good dolly parton has done for the world, and hearing just how good she is at singing, i feel that i want to enjoy her music more but i am just bored. the emotional lyrics don't affect me at all, but at least i can smile at the comedy lyrics.

This album was way better than what I was expecting. Dolly’s voice is great and the songs are great stories.

Not my kinda music, however this album conveys a sense of melancholy and yearning brilliantly

(Approx. 27 mins) A stand out lyrically. Speaks with a raw honesty about life: mothers, men, poverty, and the meaning of it all (the mystery). Not sure we could have had, "Golden Hour" if this album didn't exist. I never noticed how absent mothers/motherhood is in country music. (7/10)

Classic Dolly - only the title track was familiar. Some stories - like my mother ran off with my boyfriend - seem racy for 1971. Enjoyed it but won't seek out for another listen.

6/10 not really my cup of tea because i’m generally not into the genre. but it was definitely not utterly terrible or unlistenable and that’s for sure. + i know this is dolly’s thing or whatever haha but i don’t particularly enjoy her vocals/singing style and all that. it’s just personal taste and again if i liked the genre i would most certainly enjoy this record better but i wouldn’t say it’s excessively bad either, that’s what i’m trying to say.

Well crafted songs. Pretty standard. No experimental music. Classic Dolly Parton.

A stone cold classic that shows the range of Dolly's singing and songwriting - classic country themes and womanly wants and woes are delivered genuinely by Dolly's signature angelic warble. The one two punch of "Coat of Many Colors" followed by "Traveling Man" is an outstanding way to open the album. This is what I want to hear when I think of country music - strummy or plucky, bluesy or funny, tunes about real life, where a mother might be stitching a worn coat and reciting the Bible one night and running off with a no-good salesman the next.

If you like traditional Country and Western then this is for you….. I don’t

Great writing

I've been hoping and hoping for Dolly Parton to show up in this project for over two years. And when she finally appeared she didn't disappoint. I listened to this album four times today and I could probably listen a few times more if time hadn't run out. "Coat of Many Colors" is probably the only song I can think of that will genuinely make me cry. It should be the goddamn Mother's Day theme song, I tell you. The song that definitely shouldn't be is the very next one, "Traveling Man," which is, nevertheless, quite outstanding and entertaining. What an amazing pair of songs about mamas! The rest of the album is pure country perfection, and I give special praise to Dolly's performance of "The Way I See You," which gave me goosebumps as maybe my favorite love song ever. I knew she should be here and I’m still so amazed at how she exceeded my expectations. ❤️

Incredible story-telling and musicianship in this album. Dolly Parton is the real goddamn deal.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of Dolly over the years, but I don’t recall ever listening to this album. This is just a gem from open to close! These songs so clearly demonstrate an optimism-in-hard-times style that has always made me love Dolly Parton so much. Dolly takes us on some pretty rough roads (Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, If I Lose My Mind), but she’s there with us and never leaves us to despair. It’s not all hardship, though, as Dolly can also craft a purely beautiful love song (The Way I See You, Here I Am), or songs of pure optimism (Early Morning Breeze). I’ve wondered how a few special artists like Dolly manage to remain a nearly universally loved icon even in these dark and divided times. This album made me realize that it is that ability to acknowledge but never succumb to the darkness of life. Coat of Many Colors faces some of the worst life has to give and emerges a beacon of hope. Dolly has made my world A Better Place To Live.

After getting through the opening track, the album opens up to be amazing. Several stand out tracks, would listen again if the mood catches.

Just a regular old feel good album. The title track sets a higher bar than the rest of the album can deliver but there are clear highlights throughout. The bass playing is stellar which was a very pleasant surprise. It's very hard to go wrong with Dolly. She truly is a gem.

Great songs, performances, and production. I can't fault this one even though it isn't something I would normally listen to. There are some solid Nashville country tunes between gospel numbers and even some almost-rock-n-roll hippie bops.

Dolly rules

Dolly's songwriting fits well with older traditional country music, which is my preference, having said that I do find it a bit difficult to listen to an entire album as I am not a big fan of here voice or delivery. The musicians playing behind her are stellar country players and provide a good setting for the songs. I do understand her strong following despite the fact that she is not someone I would listen to often. Favorite songs: Coat of Many Colours, My Blue Tears

An extremely charming album that immediately won me over with the title track, and continued to impress from there. The songs here are touching and empowering, while also heartbreaking and sometimes get my head bopping. I'd place Dolly in with some of the best singer-songwriters of the 70s Americana/country era, and this album is a great example of her prowess. This record showcases Dolly's storytelling prowess and impassioned delivery really nicely. While some of the gender politics haven't aged so well (it's never the man's fault, always the "other woman's"), her distinct perspective shines through and there's some moving tracks. My hot take is that Dolly is a better songwriter and performer than singer. The persistent vibrato that is her signature is just not my cup of tea. Dolly Parton has such a distinct voice, you can pick out her sounds easily, but listening to this album, I don't think I paid much attention to what sounds like a little vibrato (I'm not sure if that's the right word) there that really works so well to this style. I don't know country too well, but I am willing to give anything a try. Dolly is a real story teller, and in the title track it really shined through, but I do find myself getting a little bored at times with this album. There are some great songs, but then most of the song, I doubt I wouldn't come back too often to listen to this one. When trying to focus on the music, I was surprised just how great the bassist (Bobby Dyson) was here (especially in Travelling Man). Standout: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Here I Am

Again, this music isn't usually my jam and there's nothing on this album which really changes my mind on that. I like the strong sense of character (presumably Dolly's herself?) I get from the album. And obviously the title track is very evocative. I'm just not a big fan of the music behind the songs. Standout track: Travelling Man

As far as Country goes, this is OK. It's just that I'm not a fan of that genre. The lyrics are mostly naive bordering on cringe, but I guess if you don't listen close enough and don't mind the genre, this is quite alright. 3/5

Treasure

This album is regarded as Dolly Parton's best and favorite work. Almost every song on this album is considered a hit. Dolly Parton has talent and is an excellent song writer. Not many people could write a song about a mom and daughter falling in love with the same stranger. Unfortunately, the listener and writer of this review is not the targeted demographic.

Good, old-fashioned Grand Ole Opry Americana. She sings so beautifully. This kind of music is what I wish more country music was like: story telling about something other than beer.

Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against Crooked Mask. We lost 2 games but won the 3rd. I really enjoyed this album. Dolly Parton is such a treasure. As a child, the only thing I knew about her was that my dad called the giant dome power plants on the way to San Diego "the Dolly Parton tribute." As an adult, I have absolutely come to love her style and lyricism. My partner felt everything sounded the same, which I get a little bit...but at under 30 minutes, it certainly doesn't overstay its welcome.

Her voice is absolutely stunning, and the message of the album is honestly one of my favorites so far in this list. There just may be a country fan in me after all. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors

I listened to this one quite a while back, but failed to write a review at the time. After a second listen this morning, I'm not entirely sure where I fall. The writing is often narrative and the singing is fine, but I never find myself terribly engaged. Traveling Man is a fun one at the front end, Early Morning Breeze is solid, and Here I Am is a familiar one. Fine album, but not my cup o' tea: 3.

I really like this era of country. The bassist was doing a good job which is not something I usually equate with country music. Short and sweet and I like Dollys voice and cadence.

A very nice quick old country album that I really enjoyed

Dolly's voice is like no other. Pretty peaceful good country but nothing that really stood out to me too crazily. Debated between a 3 or 4. Like the length of the album though. Also I’m not quite sure she was actually singing at the halftime show on thanksgiving but hot damn she looks and sounds amazing for 77. Props yo.

Dolly Parton is one of the greatest country music stars of all time. Her song lyrics have real meaning, they're catchy as can be and she's a woman with true integrity that she's maintained for over 7 decades of her life. Long live the queen!

I heard of Dolly Parton and knew she was a singer, but not sure why she was famous. I know now. Her voice is lovely. It has innocence and soul. Her vibrato is delightful. Usually not a big fan of country music and this album, but a high rating for her voice.

I'm not a fan of country, but I respect the hell out of Dolly Parton, so I'm glad I listened to this. I enjoyed it about as much as I can enjoy a country album, though I probably won't listen to it again.

How can you not love Dolly Parton. She's one of those people whose voice is confusingly magical. This really is a landmark album for her with numerous touching sincere moments (Coat of Many Colors and My Blue Tears being obvious standouts), paired with some truly hilarious moments (Travellin man). She packs SO MUCH into this short album, I could not believe this was only ~27 mins. I could honestly listen to this thing over and over again I don't have a single bad thing to say about it.
