I admire many things about Dolly Parton, like her guitar playing and songwriting. Her voice is not one of them. At least not on this album. Warbly? Vibrato?

Everybody loves Dolly

Really enjoy getting to explore these classic country albums that I never would have touched otherwise. Dolly's voice is beautiful on this album, and it's the perfect length for songs that are all pretty similar to each other. I enjoyed the rock elements I heard in Traveling Man, and the message in Coat of Many Colors is a fantastic one. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors

I recognize the quality and skill here, but this music is not for me. I prefer later, Poppier, less country Dolly.

This is why I love this platform. Both an artist and genre I wouldn’t ever go near. Enjoyed listening to it! There are a few tracks id listen to again. Maybe not the whole album - country just isn’t really my thing. But I’ve got a whole new appreciation for Dolly the songwriter! Lovely stuff!

I knew (and liked) the first song, I got through the whole album, Dolly is a great singer and the album wasn't bad. If this is your kind of music, it has been performed well and I would recommend it. If you do not like country, then I would doubt it would be particularly interesting. 5/10.

Great record. Admittedly I haven't sat down and listened to a lot of Dolly Parton but she's been getting credit for a ton of great things she's been doing for society / good causes and I'm really glad to be listening to this today. I don't always like country in a general sense but it's nice to hear a record every now and then that reminds me that there is quality music out there in every genre. Nice 3/5 for me.

Clean as a bell, charming as hell, Dolly Parton brings gives that country style some real verve. I'm not sure I loved the album but who doesn't love Dolly?

Tja, hoe zullen we dit noemen? Country-smartlappen? Edelkitsch? We hebben wel vaker countryplaten gehad, maar het ontstijgt meestal niet het cliché 'leuk voor de lange autorit'. Toch kun je best respect hebben voor hoe dit in zijn genre robuust in elkaar is gestoken, door Dolly zelf. Aan haar prettige stemgeluid ligt het ook niet, misschien had ik gewoon meer verwacht van de ongekroonde koningin van de country.

Klassiek-Amerikaanse klanken, maar dan door een vrouw. Veel vibratie in de stem, wat voor even wel leuk is, maar op een gegeven moment ook wel weer genoeg is. Het stemgebruik past eigenlijk meer op meer krachtige nummers, maar die heeft dit album weinig. Traveling Man is de positieve uitzondering.

I found this to be enjoyable, if a bit dull in places. Parton’s voice is meant to carry the album, and some of the instrumentals feel a bit lackluster as a result. That being said, Dolly’s genuine songwriting and heart shine through in the lyricism, and while she can veer into cheese territory sometimes there were also a few lines that warmed my cold, dead heart

More interesting than I expected, some decent songs

Oh, nice Dolly. Wish this was the album with Jolean, but I'll take it. This is good, and while I do enjoy this. It is a bit slow for my taste. The fast/upbeat songs are great, but the slower songs aren't really my speed. Dolly has a really distinct and soothing voice though; I'll give her that. Some of the guitar parts in some of these songs sound like they would fit in "Hawian" or SpongeBob music. I really appreciate how concise the album is though. It isn't too short nor too long at a cool 27 minutes 21 seconds. Overall pretty good, but I didn't vibe with it as much as I would like. A strong 3/5

I've always thought Dolly was a little over-rated (and I still do), but I liked this more than expected. She's got a nice enough voice, but, for example, when she sings on Trio with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, it's the least pretty of the three. I feel that half of Dolly's fame is her personality and her time in front of the camera, rather than her actual music. Her music is good, but generally not great. But I liked this more than expected. I'll give it 3 1/2 stars. Rounding down because it doesn't belong with a lot of 4 star albums.

Dolly Parton is a national treasure and this album proves it. While I'm not much of country fan I really like this album. Dolly's storytelling is stellar same as her vocal chops.

Coat of Many Colors is the eighth solo album by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. This is one of her best country albums and is seen by many critics as the pinnacle of her career. The title track has been cited as Parton's favorite track she has written. This was a beautiful album of Nashville country tunes combined with Parton's soothing singing. I hadn't heard much of Dolly Parton's music until this album, and it proved to me that she is a talented singer-songwriter indeed. Country music lovers should enjoy this album a lot.

Very easy to like Dolly’s voice. The arrangements and ensemble on older country music like this never seems to fail. Almost gave it a full extra star for the ever-tasteful pedal steel guitar throughout. Great vocals as always from her as well.

You listen to this album and come away with a good understanding of why Dolly Parton is a musical legend. This is the essence of country music, and it's a shame that modern opinion from most people (including myself) has been soured by the uninspired, pop-country thing that has become super popular.

This is a pretty light three, but I just can't give it a two. I don't really like country, but this is tolerable. I was more interested in the lyrics than the music a lot of the time. There's certainly some interesting stories going on in these songs. My favourite song was Traveling Man.

It passed without incident. But I haven't rushed out to buy boots and a stetson.

It’s a country album.

When I was growing up, this was what country music sounded like and I have to admit I'm not a fan, though Dolly makes it a little more tolerable. Parton is now in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of fame, but don't be fooled, there is NO rock and/roll on this record! The album itself is listenable and there are some worthwhile songs on here, but the genre generally is miserable and avoidable, at least for my tastes. Sorry Dolly!

Title track is perhaps her best song (according to myself and Parton herself). Travelling man is a fun story, the rest is pretty good but doesn’t reach the height of the title track.

Old country is not my thing; however, with Dolly Parton there’s always this sort of conexión. When I hear her voice I feel like a kid in his grandparents house a Sunday morning. It’s weird because that didn’t happen. I am now even from the US and my grandparents did not speak English or listen to country. I did not frequent that house either. So, it’s like yearning a past I did not have. Well, this is a nice collection of Dolly’s songs.

This was fun, I might come back to this. Probably a bit mood dependent, but you can certainly hear the songwriting chops. 3.5 rounded down.

Her voice is great and while this is not my style of music, it was still a fun listen.

There are many things Dolly does in her music that I’d not forgive in others, because others aren’t Dolly. Her wide-eyed optimism and her super-sweet music suits her wholesome nature, but this album isn’t all tiptoeing through the tulips: she brings some of that sassy country storytelling, too, especially when she complains about her mother stealing her boyfriend!

Trur da va heilt greit, huske kje

What makes this album great is that it's not exactly country. Obviously, you can hear the recognizable country techniques in each song but they have a sunshine pop feel to them like the Carpenters, with pictures of butterflies of rainbows. She has a light and sweet voice, and the peace-like instrumentation and gospel back vocals compliment her well. Especially a fan of the bass lines. This is Dolly at her most creative. There are plenty of 60s and 70s pop albums that try to do the same and always come off as boring and lame, appealing only to Sunday church children. Not here. This is for everyone. I'm not saying there are bangers, and nothing blows me away. In fact, there's a few songs I dislike like "A Better Place to Live." But for what it does, it does it well. Coming under a half hour, I can get through the whole thing before getting antsy. And despite hating country, I have reason to revisit this record that little others of its kind could offer me. Favorites: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, The Way I See You

Super high pitched voice but some good songwriting

Oh Dolly, we love you. This was a classic album I've never heard. Always love a good country tune and Dolly is one of the greats. Would I listen again? No, but if these songs came on the radio I'd happily let them play.

Nice! I assumed this was very early, young Dolly, it sounds that way. She sounds very bright eyed and cheery, at least sonically (lyrics aren't so rosy at times). But apparently this was eight or so albums deep into her career, I'm impressed! Plenty of gas in the tank. Looking through her history, this seems like it was something of a breakout, or turning point, where she made something really special on her own after years of bouncing in and out of some duet albums. I'm always game for good country albums, and this is a good one. I've not been exposed to much Dolly aside from "Jolene" of course, and I can hear from this why she's regarded highly: she just does the damn thing very competently, very well. She's got a great voice and energy for classic country tunes. I wouldn't mind more from Mrs. Parton, especially if it means we get "Jolene" somewhere down the road. Favorite tracks: Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, The Way I See You, A Better Place to Live. Album art: I assume that's YOUNG young Dolly, wearing the titular coat of many colors that her mom patched together. Dig the almost Norman Rockwell style art, really works for an album like this. 3.5/5

Sweet 70's country-pop record. I prefer the more upbeat songs, as some of the slower ones kinda bore me (personal preference). Favourite songs are Coat of Many Colors (fav), Traveling Man (love the storytelling), If I Lose My Mind, and A Better Place to Live. I really like the melodies in these songs and Dolly Parton's voice is so amazing and unique, especially for her genre.

I guess I like this about as much as the Trio album the other day. That seemed more focused on sweet, syrupy harmonies though, whereas solid songwriting is a bit more to the fore here, and I respect that.

Liked the guitar at points, pleasant, but not a standout.

This was...fine. I enjoyed the music okay, but it sounded a little too basic country-y for me, I think.

Beautiful singing of course, loved the title track and a couple others. It was a bit saccharine as a whole album for me, but it was short enough to not wear me out too bad either.

Some delightful Dolly

A great sign of things to come for Dolly Parton. Most of the songs felt more like sketches, presenting a lyrical idea of situation but leaving me waiting for more on the theme. And perhaps it's the sound of country twang: it feels from an older age than 1971 (unlike many other albums of the same year like Tapestry or Blue).

I know her most famous hits but I have not listened to an entire dolly Parton album before today. I do know that she is an amazing and generous person. I love her voice and the songs are fascinating. I hope more of her albums are on this list as I feel like this might not be her best album overall. Enjoyable none the less.

I'm not meant to like this, it has so many things that instantly turn me off. However, I smiled my way through the whole thing. It's like someone reading particularly tuneful stories to me, and there's plenty of subtle humour hidden in the lyrics to keep me entertained. A pleasant surprise from one of the albums I've been dreading having to listen to.

My first Dolly Parton record. The title track, "The Mystery of the Mystery," and "Early Morning Breeze" were my fave tracks.

The Queen of Country shows off her songwriting chops. It's Dolly, right? She's worth respect even if you don't like her music. And just like her, she keeps the tracks short and sweet. Best Tracks: Coat of Many Colors; Early Morning Breeze; Here I Am

The first two tracks set a high bar for for the album, but the next 8 do not deliver, falling into sentimental country cliches. That said, only Dolly Parton could start out with a song about a poor girl's biblical coat of many colors made from rags, follow it up with a song about a two-timing traveling salesman, and feel completely genuine the entire time. Dolly is singular; a one of a kind treasure. But this album is just pretty good.

I have heard individual tracks from Dolly over the years, but Coat of Many Colors is the first time I've listened to a whole album. The title track was the only song I was familiar with. "Coat of Many Colors" and "The Way I See You" were the tracks that called to my attention as I was listening. Overall I was surpriesed how consistent her voice and songwriting have been over the years. The album is not typical of the music I would listen to, but it was a good album.

Dolly Parton is one of those artists I want to like. I like her story and the title track is sweet and full of love. I just can't get into her but I also can't give her less than a 3.

I'm impressed that Dolly wrote most of the songs on the album. I like the one where she tells her mother that her husband makes her have sex with other men. Pretty brave for 1971. She had a great, raw voice in those early days. The title track I am not so fond of, but the story behind behind it makes it legit.

Short and sweet. Beautiful vocals, with songwriting that must have stood out starkly against mainstream country at the time. The songs are a nice mix of the sweetly personal and even the surprisingly funny. On the whole, most of the songs never quite reach the quality of the album's title song, but this is still a great album that's a pleasure to listen to. Terrifying album cover. Never judge, etc. That girl has lungs on her. Tremendous vocal delivery, honest and aware of the campness of it all. There's a very fine whiff of the '71 counter culture breezing in.

Dolly is an undeniable force of nature. She has aged with grace and poise and power. In some ways, that makes this 3-star review hard to give. But it's possible to utterly adore a person for who they are, deeply respect their accomplishments, and still not be a fan of their work. Unfortunately, that's where I am with this album. Dolly, I love ya, but this album is fairly pedestrian, steel-guitar-soaked, hillbilly country. Except for "Here I Am" - that song is amazing. On the second to last track, Dolly finally slips the lead and lets loose with the full force of her voice and the result is fantastic.

Where to start with this? Dolly is my dream girl. I'd listen to her telling me that I'm a piece of shit all year and still adore her. She has very neat pubic hair. Very neat.

I'm sure it would grow on me with repeated listens. I went back and listened to 3 songs on the back half, Early Morning Breeze & the way I see you - all brilliant. I found the songs with the most interesting stories (if I lose my mind, she never met...) to be a little dull musically.

Everyone loves Dolly! Title track is a winner, and the rest is classic Dolly Parton 70s country crooning. I was struck by the transition of Dolly’s mom character from the first to second song. She first is the caring mother sewing rags into love, and by the end of the next song, mom has run off with her new boyfriend. Country music😜.

I don't know if it's a coincidence that this is the album I was assigned right after Dolly Parton's passing, or if it was done intentionally. Either way, I knew very little about her before her death other than vaguely knowing 'Jolene' and '9-5'. Since then I've learnt a lot more about her philanthropy and general kindness and so it feels awkward trying to be critical of this album. Country music is really just not something I'm interested in. There are some nice harmonies on that 'Mystery of the Mystery' song though.

I can see how this is a fair example of a genre that I've got absolutely no time for at all. Lyrically it holds little back in laying her class / poverty struggles bare, acting almost like a confessional document. In that sense it's easy to connect with her songwriting. I just can't do her vocals, and found the music itself incredibly simple and unengaging. Sad to hear of her passing though. She seemed like a genuinely decent human being who used her status for good.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but i can't listen to her voice 👀 1 or 2 good songs but not on this album ..

RIP Dolly Parton. First of all Country isn't a genre that I like. But in honor of Miss Parton I listened to the entire album without skipping* a track. Well the ha got some enjoyable tracks on it. But for me most of the tracks are so repetitive. May she rest in peace. But: 2/5

Mad respect for Dolly but I don't like her faster songs (this album had many) as much as her slow ones. From her song "Wildflowers" from my other group's album today: "So I uprooted myself from my home ground and left Took my dreams and I took to the road When a flower grows wild It can always survive Wildflowers don't care where they grow"

The voice is clear and powerful, but at times I hear it being deliberately broken to "quiver", which I don't like at all, it is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. There is also lazy filler musically on almost all of the songs. Very little musically interests me here, so the album has to rely on vocal appeal alone, and I'm not sure it's for me on that front. While the execution is fine, surely there are much more nuanced and musically rich examples of the genre out there. I just don't see this being the best.

When Queen Elizabeth II died and I heard the outpourings of many of the UK's monarchists on the news, she finally made sense. At least a bit. The common folk interviewed saw her not as a real, tangible person, but a model of living, of how to hold oneself as a wife and a mother. It didn't matter that her children were awful, her handling of situations was stoical rather than practical, that she chose not to exercise her powers of intercession. Her quiet suffering was, indeed, her strength. She was a version of the Virgin Mary to her Anglican subjects. It felt a very precarious pedestal on which to place her while she lived and could still pay off her son's accusers, but once she was dead, she could fulfil the role of saint with relative ease. The recently-deceased Dolly Parton obviously occupies a similar position, even while she was not a mother and her husband kept mostly to the shadows. She represents a ur-feminity in both aesthetic and demeanour that somehow works across a range of cultural divides: beloved by conservative country fans, queer camp enthusiasts, and meme-sharing social media politicos. Unlike her majesty the Queen and the Blessed Virgin, Dolly's benevolence was tangible, material, and explicit. Indeed, as far as I know, it far exceeds her significant musical output, which seems to amount to a handful of songs: the brilliant Jolene; the buoyant 9 to 5; the mawkish, but moving, I Will Always Love You; and the inexorable Here You Come Again and Islands in the Stream. That's significant crossover for a genre star, but not so much crossover to make her the superstar she obviously was. I don't imagine listening to this or any of her records will reveal better musical material or greater artistry. Dolly Parton's brilliance at proflicity made her the camp saint she became and her generous, uncontroversial use of that success made it all worthwhile. Good for her. In such light, it seems almost unfair for the generator to put any record before a grieving public that, for the most part, is unfamiliar with much of Parton's discography. Shame on you generator. Let people come to the truth in their own time. Coat of Many Colours is full of rinky-dink tunes and homespun stories that feel as two dimensional as any prayer to the holy mother or anthem to the monarch. That allows a lot of people to find their way into them, I'm sure. And Parton's voice and guitar-playing are certainly sprightly enough. Perhaps the country song, by its procedural natural, flattens the artist, just as veneration flattens femininity. However, it is part of Dolly's whole deal that she's not flat, an innuendo she would have appreciated. And there is a little sass and sexiness in here: Travelling Man; She Never Met a Man; the bassline to Early Morning Breeze gives a bit more than expected from Nashville session playing. But, ultimately, nothing on Coat of Many Colours made Dolly Parton the money that allowed her to make her return contribution to American life. She is a figure of art more than an artist. 1.5 Despite the glowing reflections on the brilliance of her music in the aftermath of her death, the truth is that Dolly Parton‘s music was much less important than her brand, which ultimately incorporated the idea of Someone Everyone Can Like and Agree On. This achievement owed more to being consciously unchallenging - in public life as well as in music - than it did to the fulfilment of any particular Good Work. Like Dolly in public, Coat of Many Colors is unfailingly nice. No feats of composition or arrangement challenging the ordinary conventions of its genre. Sometimes a song is Bible-y, but not the bits of the Bible that the listener might feel challenged by should that listener happen to be an arsehole. There are some tales of the cruelty of men, but not told in such a way as to make uncomfortable any cruel men among Dolly‘s listeners. It is mealy-mouthed. Harmless. With sugar on top. She didn’t want to convert anyone - only to sell to them. Dolly Parton was not St Francis, she was McDonalds. 1.5/5

Why is the choir always mixed clear to the right? Aren't those usually supposed to fill the whole stereo space, like a chapel? I think the general sound is nice, but it's pretty boring. Also for don't reason certain lines made me too aware that Dolly was just singing into a mic in a studio in the 70s. Like it broke my suspension of disbelief. Which isn't really something I realized I had when listening to music. The fade-out in the morning breeze feels a little jarring. Here I am has Taylor Swift grade lyrics. I guessed on listening to this that it would be Dolly's debut album, only off by seven albums. A lot of songs about her mama but guess thats just the Parton way. Can't say I'm a huge fan, as canny as she seems to be. It's all variations on the theme and it wears thin quickly.
