Reviews (page 5 of 8)
I generally enjoy Dylan, but this did little for me.
This was not what I expected from a bob dylan album. It wasn’t bad
This one was ok, but surprisingly boring for Bob Dylan... Overall forgettable
Un dylan bien blusero.
It felt dark and bluesy, carrying weight in its atmosphere and poetry. Still, it came across a bit monotonous for my taste, even if I can appreciate the depth of the lyrics.
It's clearly a high quality example of something I wouldn't ever actively reach for, and at 72 minutes, staying the course was a bit of a test, but there is a palpable tension and dark atmosphere flowing throughout this. One of my first points of reference was the earlier works of Tom Waits before he (presumably) underwent a frontal lobotomy. There is some lovely instrumentation here, and Bob Dylan captures quite the presence with his raspy, nicotine-ravaged voice. Perhaps a good one for a gloomy winter evening with some mulled wine.
Suprised me, I like a more mellow older Bob
Not a bad Dylan album, quite easy to listen to, doesn’t have the same emotional appeals as some of his other records
Exceeded my expectations
A great late career renaissance for Bob. Unfortunately it doesn’t do the same justice as his earlier works. Still an ok album just not one that I would go out of my way to listen to again
Mid bob 3.2
3 sterne
While this album is interesting, the last song ruins it. Its a really really bad song and lasts for so long. Im gonna go 3, I hadnt heard the album in 20 years. It was better than it seems, but its a bit one note. Fine
Boy this album is long. Some real good stuff throughout though
Not his best work
Interesting nicely produced take on the blues by Bob Dylan. His voice is an acquired taste that I have yet to acquire. It's odd, though. I appreciate the weirdness of it. SO MANY other people doing a BAD job of expressing themselves this way (looking at you Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits) and it always comes off insincere. Dylan somehow makes every word believable. So even though not my taste, I get what he's trying to do. Highlands is amazing, and a couple other cuts were great. Love the instrumentation and the production.
I prefer the music to his voice Favourite song: Love Sick
Amazing song writing and even the voice grows on you.
That was definitely a Bob Dylan album
Honestly, old man Bob Dylan voice is my favorite version of his voice, from what I've heard from him so far. Mind you, it's still not good, but it's much more tolerable for me to listen to than most of his music. I do really like the bluesy-ness of this album for him. It's a great backdrop for his old man voice. And just like his early folk music, it really lets his guitar playing shine and be a real highlight of the album. Unfortunately, this album also just goes on too long for me. I'm completely disinterested in what it's offering by the end of it. Drop the cover, shorten up a couple of songs, and I think there would be some more cohesiveness and investment to the album. I think this is still my favorite Bob Dylan album that I've heard, but that's not a high bar, unfortunately. Favorite Song(s): Standing in the Doorway
This was alright, especially in the beginning. Was kind of done with this by the time the album finished.
Like a Tom Waits album
I like the instrumentation, but don’t really the effects on his voice on some songs
A few decent songs, bluesy-rock-country, a bit plodding and uninteresting vocals
I can’t say it’s bad music, I can’t even say it was unremarkable music. However, I just wasn’t that moved or interested at all. 2.9
I have never actually listened to this fo fear it would ruin Bob Dylan for me. And while I wouldn’t put it among his finest work it’s certainly much better than I had worried it would be. A few songs I quite liked.
Bluesy, late Dylan. Not my fav, not terrible. Tryin' to Get to Heaven stood out. Didn't realize he wrote Make You Feel My Love either. 3/5.
Fucking hell, did dylan actually make a not god awful album? What the hell? I am bewildered. There were songs here that didnt sound like a cat scratching on a chalkboard. Dont get me wrong, there were several songs that annoyed the shit outta me but damn, i actually didnt hate this album at times
enjoyed this way more than my average bob dylan listening experience. was having a good time listening to the instrument sounds
A 1997 Dylan record. What was he doing then? Exciting. Reminds me of Tom Waits records from that time with beautiful songwriting and that raspy old man voice. Classic forms, beautiful ballads, feeling of comfort in their songwriting skin. The voice feels like a natural continuation for both Waits and Dylan despite them sounding quite different earlier in their careers. Make you feel my love - is this the original record for that song? I thought it was older than late 90s (thought mj did a version earlier? Did he even do a version?)
‘I’ve been to London/I’ve been to gay Paree’ - Not Darl Yet
I feel like there were ups and downs with this album. Some good songs, some okay. Middle of the road as far as a Dylan album goes for me.
Out of all the Dylan albums, maybe this one shouldn't be on here.
It was fine. The only highlight was "Make You Feel My Love".
Pretty ok
This felt different from the other Bob Dylan albums I’ve listed to - his voice sounds different, reminiscent of Tom Waits, and it’s maybe more bluesy. At first, that different sound was enough to keep me interested, but it went on too long and started to feel a bit like a chore. Not my favorite Dylan album, but not my least favorite, either. Not Dark Yet, Love Sick 3-3.5
3 stars out of respect for what he means to music history. But, not a fan of his stuff
Not quite there for me.
I found this a pleasant unchallenging album to listen to. It's a far cry from Dylan's mid-60s glory days, but to be still creating albums after all these years is quite something.
I gave nick Cave too high of a score yesterday. Rip. This is a nice album. Its chill and nice. It sounds like the lyrics aren't but I enjoy the sonics of it. Dylans gravel smooth voice is always great if its ur thing. I enjoy a unique voice in all my music. So bobs my uncle or whatever. Its not the best Dylan record. Its not the firey 60s stuff. Its just nice.
Considering there’s like 8 more Dylan albums on this list, including Time Out Of Mind feels like one album too many. Really sticks out as an inclusion for just being a random later-period Dylan album; there’s nothing notable about it. The fact this album made the list and Desire didn’t is a travesty. This is fine, but just average for a later-period Dylan.
Lots of respect for Mr. Dylan. And I prefer his older, more gravely voice with better pronunciation than his younger more nasally voice. But still not a regular listen. I’m going to give out more twos because this is a three but it’s better than most of the threes I’ve given so far. I need more diversification
Good
No me gusta late stage Dylan
This album is OK but imnsvho it doesn't justify any of the "late period masterpiece" stuff that you can read in books and on the web. After Blood On The Tracks Dylan has made some good albums, like Desire, Street Legal, Infidels, Oh Mercy and this. But that's it. They're OK. I'm not knocking Dylan, by the way. His recorded output up to and including John Wesley Harding, and then The Basement Tapes and Blood On The Tracks, is an eighth wonder of the world.
Is this finally a good Dylan album? Is this the infamous electric departure of his? How about none of the above?? Nothing of particular note here. It's totally fine and doesn't sound anything like Bob D (this is a good thing).
как-то многовато Боба Дилдона в этой книжке, неужели ее писал Стас Гасилин?... на любителя
Not my favorite Bob Dylan album. It’s not horrible, but I’m not a fan of his singing and the rest of the music is mostly forgettable.
singen kann er halt nicht und ein spannender Klassiker war auch nicht dabei
Definitely his best so far
Old man Dylan trying to re-discover his place in the world. Not much to talk about compared to his prime years, but an interesting look at his style aging into something more bluesy and downtempo. Best song: Make You Feel My Love
Day493 - for an artist to put out arguably good music after thirty years is still a good feat. i remember this coming out and critics loved it but it’s hard for me to listen to.
Smoky, self indulgent, aging Dylan
It's Dylan, sure, but the 1997 version of Bob Dylan is not the classic 60's and 70's Bob. Time has not been kind, and Time out of Mind is a good way to describe listening to this album. It's not horrible, but it's a yearning for his original older folk material. 3.25 / 5 stars.
Ok.. but nothing stands out. Not gonna lie, his voice is a bit rough. 2 stars for me but I do like Adele, so I’m feeling generous.
I’ve got a pretty solid Bobby D playlist. Roughly 20 songs or so mostly from the 60’s, 70’s, maybe some 80’s. It’s always interesting to hear him in each decade. Not my favorite album of his by a long shot but glad I listened. It feels a bit more musically driven with some variety in the guitar playing, especially compared to classic acoustic Dylan. Kind of long and droning and I while I think I have a high tolerance for his sound and style, I could definitely see this album dragging if you weren’t keenly interested in hearing how we progressed into the 90’s.
Nothing against Bobby D, but he’s no Timmy C. All jokes aside, this album was pleasant to listen to. It was nice to have on in the background as I was working, but it didn’t strike me as groundbreaking. I suppose if you’ve listened to 29 other Bob Dylan albums, this one would really stand out. Not bad, but not amazing in my humble opinion.
Good but not his best.
Bob Dylan was really touched by God or something the earlier years of his career. I liked this pretty decent, but it’s hard to imagine it’s the same guy who had the spark to make the first 6-or-so records. I mean it’s unmistakably him, on account of the voice, but nowhere near the same magic level ya know?
I’m a big Dylan fan but this isn’t striking me in the same way as his earlier works. One funny thing: as I was first listening to the album, it struck me as very similar to a different album that I used to play a lot - Shine by Daniel Lanois. Then I opened the review section and saw that this album was produced by Daniel Lanois.
Was... was his voice always that gravelly? Like, I know he was rough, but this sounds like a racoon being dragged through a quarry filled with fiberglass leavings. Still good though.
Bit disappointed honestly, was expecting great folk music but only got decent. Can see why people fall in love with Dylan’s music but not for me, enjoyed ‘Make you feel my love’; that one gave me the thought provoking sound that I expected, the rest weren’t memorable to me.
1997. Enjoyed the rougher older sound of Dylan's voice here. Plenty of heart ache throughout. Orchestral and collaborative. Won album of the year
I remember when this came out, I was deep in a Dylan kick, mostly the 60s albums, and the mostly positive reviews made me excited. And I listened to it a bunch for a few weeks, and that I think was the last time I heard it. It’s fine. Honestly the real star here is the production, I doubt, with a couple of exceptions, these songs would be nearly as interesting (and they aren’t all that interesting) without the heavy reverb and arrangements. 3 stars, mostly for Make You Feel My Love.
I’ve always thought of this, Modern Times, and Love & Theft to be something of a trilogy. This is my least favorite of the three. It’s just a bunch of rudimentary blues riffs. Also, every song on those three albums is, like, six minutes long.
Things have changed is cool. Oh that’s not on this record. This one is not bad but Dylan’s voice did get a lot harder to swallow in the later years
A third Dylan album in 113 days is insane. What's also insane is that this shit is an hour:13 long. The fuck? With all that said, admittedly, I did like this. As background music too. It wasn't amazing, and the uniqueness kinda dies from his earlier stuff but this is still pretty solid. Minus one point for the length.
Album is too long. I like some of the bluesy elements, but there’s only so much I can stand. 72 minutes is too much. I also tend to prefer Bob Dylan songs when covered by someone else, which is testament to both his song writing prowess and his annoying voice.
I don't know how the rest of this album is going to play out, but the first 45 seconds of song 1 has done my head in. Is this Bob Dylan...with vocal reverb? It's not quite auto-tune, but there's something being done here to digitize his voice. That's bizarre. OK, the first song was actually kind of the highlight of the album. Firstly, it's too long. I don't need an hour and a quarter of...whatever this is. Secondly, I'm not sure who this is for, other than existing Dylan fans. Did this album attract a bunch of new fans? I doubt it. It's not, like, actively awful, but it's kind of boring. It doesn't have the punchiness of Dylan's early work. I just saw that this album won Album of the Year over OK Computer and I'm absolutely dumbfounded. That's highway robbery. I want to penalize this a star because I'm annoyed, but I just learned that my favorite Dylan song, It's Not Dark Yet, is on this album, so I'll stick to a very generous 3 stars.
<Bob Dylan Cumming>
Hm
The absence of the harmonica is such a treat. Feels like I can finally enjoy the music a little more. And he’s not bombarding the listener with a wall of unpunctuated text. There’s room to breathe. Even though his voice has become charred gristle and he makes no effort to reduce his nasal tendencies, there’s something good here. His raw vocals compliment the intimate emotion and heartbreak in his lyrics. The music is really good. I actually saved a song. That’s miraculous. 3/5
3/5. The Blues album by Bob Dylan. I think the production is a highlight here, with Dylan sounding like he is trapped on a railroad train car in a deep tunnel. Many of the songs don't strike me as unique but some are really good, so there is kind of a balance that equates to a decent album, but not something I'm super invested in. The latter half of the album was much better than the first, except for Highlands, hard to justify the length. It could it may take a few listens like Dylan albums are want to need. Best Song: Cold Irons Bound, Can't Wait, Not Dark Yet
I love Bob but never got into his post 70's stuff. This was my chance to rectify that. Turns out i was right, it takes the stuff o dont like about him like his voice and his misery and brings it front and centre.
Well, it's another Bob Dylan... I guess I didn't mind this one as much. Some of the songs were kind of beautiful, at least as beautiful as they can be with his awful voice.
I was concerned when it was a Bob Dylan album from 1997. It was actually OK- Highlands was an awful song though, and just never ended. Just 16.5 minutes of nothing. I'll give it a 2.5 and round up.
This album would've been perfect for "how do you do"
I liked “Cold Irons Bound”. Most of the rest of this I viewed as “non-hit related Dylan filler”. His songwriting skills and street cred keep it at a 3*, but barely. That last painfully long unnecessary track almost made me round down. 2.5/5
Listening to Dylan for 45 minutes straight can be rough, but over 70 minutes for just 11 songs? C’mon man. Overall this “comeback” album is not bad. But many songs coming in at 7+ minutes is just too damn long. And that last song at 16+ minutes is just dumb droney nonsense. The real winner here is producer Daniel Lanois for making Dylan’s voice not so annoying and for providing an airy modern soundscape which rivals what he did two years prior on Emmylou’s “Wrecking Ball.”
Like most people, my Dylan cutoff is pretty early in his career (basically anything Chalamet could kinda pull off…). I actually kind of like this album, but hard to say it’s anything special. Cool creepy vibes, but lacks in the songwriting department
If there was one thing missing from this list it was late 90’s Dylan……. Actually not as rough as I expected. But 75 minutes, Bob? Really??? That 16 min last track nearly had me downgrading my rating… 2.75/5
👍
Nice and bluesy, cool background music. Dylan's voice sounds awful and he should stop singing. Some interesting lyrics and melodies in there, hard to see/feel them.
I'm a Dylan fan but not a diehard. I prefer a song over an album, it takes a strong person to endure a full album of him singing. He was much smoother in the 60's and 70's but he's a bit rough now. This is my first time through this album from top to bottom. There are a lot of good songs and if they were sung by an accomplished vocalist you'd have something special. I couldn't take "Million Miles", but I'd say my favorites were "Tryin' To Get To Heaven" and "Not Dark Yet". 3 stars for the song writing but the delivery doesn't match up. Maybe it's the messages in the songs that put it in the T1001 but it's not worthy and more hype for a previously huge artist to release something this late in his career.
Was gonna give this 4 stars, but the final song being 16 minutes long really overstayed the welcome. Solid for the genre and I recognize its importance.
I have definitely never sat down and listened to Bob Dylan. What I have heard I did not like because of his voice. He is an excellent songwriter. Kind of a bluesy album here. Lyrically, this was good. The music was not my jam, but it was mellow and easy to put on on the background. His voice is godawful. I did enjoy Cold Irons Bound greatly, but not enough to give this one more than a 3.
I know Bob Dylan is seen as such an important artist, but I can rarely get into his stuff, and this album was no exception. I do think the lyrics were great on this collection of traditional-blues-inspired numbers. He reminds me of Leonard Cohen: poet first, singer/musician afterward.
nothing super crazy musically, some cool stuff here and there. and obviously some great lyrics as to be expected. probably important in Dylan’s career but wasn’t anything special to me
Songs are about twice as long as needed But fine?
gay ei tarkoita iloista enää bob tarkoittaa homoa, homosexuaali hinnttiä. älä koskaan juo vettä bob. bob, äälä koskaan kostuta kurkkuasi bob. äläkä koskaan nosta kalorie intake. älä koskaan syö enemmän. pysy pienenä (stäy small) . pieni mies studiossa. pieni muurahainen heiluu studiossa vaan menemään pistää.. tärisee kädet niin heikot, monta tuntia oltu töissä.. noh mennään nukkumaan.. peiton alle lämpiämään. silmät kiinni bob.. ei tarvitse bob huolehtia mistään bob.. heikko pieni bob... hyvä chilli bob albumijosta en aikaisemmin kuullut ollenkaan vähän hämmästyttää listalla olemassaolo mutta gg . Good Dylan, has some more musicality/blues/rock to it as opposed to singer/songwriter feel -Million Miles -Til I Fell in Love with You -Make You Feel My Love
Standing in the Doorway // Tryin’ to Get to Heaven // Not Dark Yet //
Another one I don't have any strong feelings for
Past-prime Dylan is still better than most songwriters by a long shot. I can’t say I loved this as much as my favorite Dylan albums, but it was more solid than I remembered.
i think it's fine, i just don't think it's a mindblowing comeback. this is through no fault of Dylan -- his lyrics are as great and thoughtprovoking as ever -- but really due to the production of Daniel Lanois, whose work i normally admire. however, instead of making great ideas sparkle, they just feel smoothed over, like a plank dipped in matte paint. the blues here never feel wild or exciting, and more like they serve to back up Bob's vocals. there's a few interesting instrumental ideas here, sure, but they're not plentiful enough throughout the 72 minutes to do anything but placate. like i said, i don't hate it, but i miss the nuclear siren of his harmonica in the 60's ever so slightly. good poems, okay sounds.
Solid Dlyan. Doesn't seem to be a standout album for him, but it was just what I needed last night.
I thought most of the album was okay, but that last song almost knocked my rating down a star.
I wanted to enjoy this one more than I did. It wasn't bad, but wasn't awesome either.
It’s okay, he’s ok but kinda cool
An album of 2 halves. or more accurately alternating killer/filler. Lovely melodic songs intertwined with more repetitive long formulaic "woke up this morning..." blues songs. I liked this album a lot more through headphones than listening in the car. Also very glad there was only one song with 'harmonica' (why is it called that? harmonic it definitely isn't). 'Lovesick' 'Tryin to get to Heaven' (yes even with mouth organ), 'Not dark yet', 'Make you feel my love', 'Highlands' great. Other stuff less so but still a solid 3.
Some nice blues tracks, but not what I'm familiar with. So I'll need to listen again to see if any songs grow on me.
not bad for a dylan album
More blues than folk. Songwriting is still pretty good, singing is still pretty bad. More gravelly than most typical Dylan. It's okay.
This is the first Bob Dylan record I've listened to front to back. The vocal performance was a little irritating. I liked the bluesy tracks. I look forward to maybe hearing something older in his catalogue that makes me understand why people love him.
Late 90s Dylan. More mature voice. Blues. CooL and relaxing but also quite meandering.
It’s 72 minutes of Dylan playing the blues 🫡🔫. Some of it’s not bad but this is mostly my nightmare come to life.
I heavy fucked with this album. I am a big time Blood on the Tracks fan and the tenderness of these pieces reminded me a lot of that side to Dylan's discography. Some longer ballads and full on heart wrenching poems in this one. If there weren't so many filler tracks it would be a bit higher, but I gotta be objective and give this one a 6/10
Some great songs, but fucking hell, that voice. Just find later stage Dylan near unlistenable. Would love to hear a cover version of this album.
I don’t know if this is consider mid career Dylan or late career Dylan. Either way I know a lot of people who love his stuff even up through the 2020s. There were a few good tracks here but overall sounded too slow and tired. Didn’t hate it didn’t love it.
This came out when I was a kid. Modern Dylan. Tom Waits meets melody. It’s good but not my favorite Freewheeling Dylan. If you can stay objective with his career you might get more of the cosmos than most. 3.5/5
I know that Bob Dylan is like a god in music. He sits, and rightly so, at the head table, he has a Nobel prize! I mean.... who am I to say anything about his poetry and meaning? Well, I am not! But I will concede that his voice is specific and his guitar is specific and his tone and pace and just general way of being a musician are ... special. I listened to this album in two parts because while I honestly won't touch his poetry or lyrical value, as often is the case with singer songwriters, I will say that I really feel his music is best accessed a few songs at a time or less... it just becomes so "this guy and his guitar" but I am not keen for a lecture when I just want to listen to some good music. Now for the unpopular comment of the day: He may well be a master poet, but he doesn't have a ton of diversity in his music.
Probably the best Bob Dylan album I’ve listened to. Somehow producers were able to make his voice tolerable. The blues based album is cool and calm and very listenable. It’s still Bob Dylan, but less unpleasant.
His voice gets harder for me to tolerate in this era. These are all fine, but lacking any real spark or new ideas.
This guy just can't sing. The songs are okay.
Dylans 30th album! Sounds a bit like Tom Waits.
Never heard it. Thought it was unremarkable but a decent listen, quite relaxing
while this wasn’t bad, it wasn’t what i expected. i much prefer 60’s and 70’s dylan to this. having said that, “make you feel my love” is a gorgeous song.
Glad I listed to the album, I absolutely hate Bob Dylan's voice so I never would have found it otherwise. I still hated his voice, but I really enjoyed the music
Just So Bob! He’s a complete known… entity. Some of this was great - Live Sick was a fantastic start and then it just Bobbed along.
I reviewed this album when it was first released in 1997, and as someone who had always struggled understanding, embracing, or enjoying Dylan's music, I was pretty knocked out. As in, I liked it and gave it a sterling review. But deep down, it was really a statement that I didn't hate it and was pleasantly surprised and happy to be able to say it. Which also points to the fact that I'm not the person to turn to for a review/rating/opinion of Dylan's work, because I'm hopelessly prejudiced and likely to diss it. No question, this is a side of Bob Dylan I can almost warm up to. Vocally, he's rough as hell, but there's something assured about his singing. Not quite a Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen thing, but in that same vein. And lyrically, right from the get-go, turning "Lovesick" into "being sick of love" is good stuff. Yet, I wasn't enthralled. I liked it, as of now I can list this is among my favorite of his albums (along with "Oh Mercy," and "Bringing It All back Home"). But, damnit, I didn't get to 4 stars. I felt like Dylan stuck to a theme, musical or lyrical, and tried to wring more out of it than was there on too many occasions. I'd be invested, and then I'd be restless because he was hanging on the same musical passage (or melody, etc.) and I was ready to move on. Man, this is a lot of words to say that, while I'd put this high on the list of "favorite" Dylan albums, I didn't totally love it.
Yeah, this is a decent album. Great production. It's very atmospheric and swampy. And I dig the effect on his voice. His songwriting is OK. But it's a fine example of an old-timer hooking up with a talented young producer and making something cool and hip if perhaps not great.
It's fine and forgettable.
This album is frustrating. The opening track, the music is cool as hell and then Bob Dylan starts "singing" with a Tom Waits on helium gravel. This repeats throughout the album. Bob Dylan's voice ruins it for me. The strength of the songs and the performance of the band puts this at 4 stars. Bob Dylan's voice is 1 star. 2.5 stars.
Old Bob Dylan was ok then there were some pretty good songs.
It's the best, musically, of Dylan I've heard so far.
Cosy-schmosy and in German this is called „altersmilde“. Wouldn‘t change station when this came on the radio.
I was a little surprised to see a Dylan album from 1997 here, and even more surprised to learn that he's still making music (and if I'm being honest, I didn't even know he was still alive). He's now at 40 albums. Gosh dang. I was immediately pleased by the change in the sound of his vocals compared to his classic stuff; his voice has lost some of the nasally sound that's made it really hard for me to full enjoy the music that the rest of the world seems to hold up as some of the best ever. This worked well as background music while working. It didn't grab me enough to ever seek it out again, but it was solid. 3.3
Not the right kind of music to me. Now I see why some people hate his later work
Bob Dylan claramente más viejo y cansado, interesante que se fuera por hacer blues en los 90s
A real mixed bag. 3 outstanding tracks.
Highlight was a cover. That’s not a great sign. BD is not background music. It takes concentrated effort. This is not a bad thing. I just need more time to fully appreciate him and his song writing.
Satisfying my folk cravings once again. Not as good as some of his earlier stuff but still good nonetheless.
At first I didn't think it was Bob Dylan. Not his familiar voice. As usual, great tunes and lyrics. A good album overall.
Ol' Bobby boy continues to make music that I don't mind. What a perfectly acceptable album.
Never listened to any late era Dylan. This was pretty good.
A few really great songs. Not one I need to hear again in its entirety.
Most of this album is slow and sad. I appreciate the artistry, the music, & the poetry of the lyrics. But not so much my speed. He could've called this album "I Got the Tired Blues" or "Dylan Does Lullabys". I like Dirt Road Blues cuz it's more upbeat. And I love the song "Make You Feel My Love". Dylan wrote it, so he's the orginal but yikes... he doesn't really sing it that well. Adel does it better.
This was so chill it made me sleepy. Also his voice is SO gravelly in this album.
It's fine. But I don't get why it's on the list. It's hardly Dylan's best.
Dylan in 1997 is nothing I've experienced before, but I know that Dylan in 2012 sounds vaguely like Tom Waits, so this will be great for context. Surprisingly, this just seems like an aged Dylan: a little slower in his delivery, a little more direct in his lyricism, and leaning more into blues. This is a mild-mannered Bob Dylan, but "Standing in the Doorway", "Tryin' to Get to Heaven" show that with age comes valuable experience and new questions about life. "Not Dark Yet" is the closest to Midwest Emo Dylan is likely to get. A decent late-career effort from Bob. Not as interesting as his hayday, but still offers songs worth listening to.
Somehow this album felt less engaging than the older ones he's made.
No one needs to hear 90's Dylan albums
I did somewhat enjoy this album but I don’t think I’m old enough to under it yet. Very bluesy and a little depressing.
Not his best album
I hadn’t ever listened to a full Dylan album beyond the 70’s before and this was better than I had expected. There was a real Tom Waits vibe to it. Dylan is obviously battling with growing old, it’s an honest album. I gave it an honest try, I respect it, I just don’t see myself coming back. 3 stars
When this won the Grammy for album of the year is when I gave up on the Grammy’s. I realized it is about industry and not the audience. All these years later I enjoyed listening to it but keep my earlier assessment. Age hasn’t changed my view. It beat Ok Computer. I’m not a huge Radiohead fan, but I just don’t see how that happens. Listening to it now it’s a fine record. Maybe multiple listens would reveal something more in it. But it’s unlikely I go back for more listening.
Un Dylan muy maduro, que no sorprende.
Bob gonna Bob. You know what you’re getting here: moody, atmospheric lyrics, and sophisticated, adult blues. It’s smart and accomplished. But interesting? I guess it’s unfair, but I have trouble listening to the whines of the ultra rich and famous, especially when it comes to finding love. Maybe I’m just too upbeat a cat. Not impossible to imagine, but difficult to care deeply.
To make you feel my love is a great song but I found the album a little boring 5/10
3/5
Alternate title could be "I don't even want to be about anymore". These aging rockers reflecting on the meaning of life and death is a real drag! Second listen through it was more enjoyable and his lyrics are interesting as always. The Nick Cave/creepy swamp blues sound on a couple tracks isn't for me. Not sure how to feel about the mix - it sounds bad but it works for the overall depressing vibe. It was thought provoking, but getting someone to comtemplate how fleeting life can be feels like low hanging fruit. Dylan was this down in '97.... I wonder what the last 30 years have been like.
Disclaimer: not a huge Dylan fan… yet. In general, im hoping to hear more, but Blood On The Tracks was really the only album of his that ive been through more than once. This album doesnt seem worthy to be included on this list. I found a lot of it to be dull/non inventive. Not particularly bad, just not WOW good. “Background blues” music Songs I liked: Til I fell in love with you Make you feel my love
Not one of his best records and certainly not one that can't be missed. Some good stuff here, but it's too long and sometimes boring to be truly great.
Typical bob dylan
Favorite Track: Not Dark Yet
Glad to have been born and raised without an irrational love of Dylan, so that I can appreciate each song for what it is without the baggage of an aura. Great opening track. After that, most of the songs are too bluesy for my blood, but I appreciate the bite in the delivery and the sharpness of the lyrics on many of them (despite Dylan loving a couplet a little too much). By and large if you're going to lean into the older forms you could do a lot worse.
As I was listen to the opening song’s fingernails-on-chalkboard vocals and repetitive-going-nowhere vocals of Love Sick I was shocked that I wasn’t listening to Miley Cyrus. This album was a lot more traditionally blues than I think of normally of a Dylan album. Dirt Road Blues and Million Miles could have been covers of 1930-40s era Sun House or Muddy Waters. I think that is part of the struggle I had with this album is immediately following were poppy Billy Joel-style songs like Tryin’ to Get to Heaven, and Not Dark Yet. None of these songs were bad, but collectively the album felt disjointed to me. I might be rating this too high but on a per-song-basis rather than a collective-basis, I think it’s fair.
Oh Bob, you old devil. Hard to believe that Bob Dylan is still going at it over 60 years on. This was his comeback album 30 years ago!!!! This was the template for later day Dylan. I can appreciate it but it is definitely no party music. He's aged quite nicely into the old guard, wise, old man singing and I feel like it started here. "Not Dark Yet" and "Make You Feel My Love" are the stand out tracks.
First time listening to this. I wouldn't put this up there with his best albums.
I’m grateful that this album gave us “To Make You Feel My Love” but otherwise, I’ll pass. Dylan is well past his prime here. His voice does not hold up, and the songs are overly long and meandering. I’m kind of surprised this got so much critical praise, but at the same time, there’s something about it I could see specifically critics in the mid-90s gravitating towards. There are glimpses here and there of a good album, and I did particularly enjoy the first track, but overall it’s uneven and kind of a mess. As I listened, I kept thinking, “did this really need to be made?” But at the same time, it’s Dylan and something in me just can’t hate it.
ok
Good in places. Not at good as peak Bob Dylan.
Mmm decent though t it also very much a Daniel Lanois album. His production is special and it warps BDs voice. Too long though.
Not terrible at times very nice but I much prefer early Dylan over this
De ene keer denk je oh lijp, de andere keer is het ook wel echt heel saai hoor
Dark Dylan is the best Dylan.
His voice caught me off guard at first, he sounds like a drunk guy at a bar that once you start listening to is somehow good. This is my first time listening to Bob Dylan and I think I get the hype of why he became popular when he did. I don’t think this album would have done it for him but it is a solid listen. Comforting like an honest rambling from an old man who has been through it.
First Bob Dylan album for me, crazy that it’s his 30th. Also weird to start with something so late in his career. His voice is so rough. Highlights: standing in the doorway
I would like to give this 2.5 stars, because I personally didn't like it much, but it isn't a bad album, and there were a couple songs I did enjoy. However, most of it just turned out to be boring, and the last song was a slog. I don't mind a 16 minute song, and I understand what he was trying to do, but I didn't feel it justified itself. And, in general, that's how I felt about much of the album, unfortunately.
This is very typical Dylan. I'd rate it lower, but no one is as consistent as he is after 30 albums, so it's a middle-of-the-road from me
Tror nog "not dark yet" är bäst.
Each song was fine by itself, but the album was way too long and the vocals were a doozy, even for Bob Dylan standards
Pretty good. If you can stand his. 'singing'
It's interesting to see how more subdued the music and gravelly his voice is compared to Highway 61 Revisited. Good album, the wrong mood for me this week though. Will listen again later.
Liked it a lot more than I expected...did not miss the harmonica at all.
Very bluesy.
I enjoyed this album. It was slow and I feel like I wasn't really in the right mood to be listening to these typa songs right now. But I will definitely be revisiting this album another time. Overall enjoyed the sound of the album too.
I feel like I had the wrong day for this one. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's more I'd find here on a revisit. This feels heartfelt and honest. Nothing in particular stood out but that may be the listener this time. I'll check it out again sometime with more attention.
I'm a big Bob Dylan hater and this was tolerable so I guess to the lay person, this was pretty good. 6/10.
Might be the best Dylan album I've heard but it all gets too samey after a while and did not keep me hooked throughout
Meditative blues from the legendary Dylan. Not my favorite but a few songs have that satisfying Dylan feel.
I mean, it’s good, but it doesn’t really need to be here in comparison to his other stuff. I’m fine with its inclusion, and I don’t mind representing modern Dylan (not to mention this probably deserves inclusion more than his live album), but it didn’t hit me in the way some of his others do. I guess I just prefer the acoustic stuff that really lets you sink into the lyrics, and this just doesn’t feel like that. It’s also just that older Bob Dylan’s singing isn’t that good, especially from an artist whose vocals were already often criticized. Finally, ‘Highlands’ is fine, but for being a 16 minute closer, it really doesn’t hit like other long closers from him, such as ‘Desolation Row’.
Not his best
Not one of my favorite Dylan albums, but it is interesting to hear Daniel Lanois work with the old man. Bob's voice isn't what it was -- he's started to drift into "more cheerful Tom Waits" territory here. It's fine. I know it won a Grammy, but I still prefer several of his other albums. Unexpected bangers: Million Miles, Tryin' to Get to Heaven, Highlands.
Mellow and comfy...too comfy...
I didn't realize Make You Feel My Love was a Bobby D song. The album was alright. I've never been a huge Bobby D fan, I can tolerate him but I don't find him mind-blowing. This record slots right there in the middle.
Not bad. Easy enough listening.
Dy-lon
It was fine Bob doesn’t really do it for me
I like his voice better as he aged but he still doesn’t do it for me.
This album is alright. I think it's well produced but it's slow and long. Maybe when I'm older this will hit a little better but for the moment the emotions don't come through in the same way as other Dylan albums.
This is very Tom Waits-ish, not really typical Bob Dylan style.
Feels like they could have cut this album for something more impactful than a decent late period Dylan. 3/5
this album switches between touching ballads that get to your heart and the most boring generic blues bullshit. highlight is make you feel my love for sure. not gonna return to this one often aside for that one track. maybe a few of the other ballads.
If this wasn't Bob Dylan would anyone care about this album? It's put together fine but very hard to get excited about this. The rave reviews are baffling to me. 2.5*
I liked some songs ok, but not really that amazing to me.
I think this is better than I think it is but his voice just sounds so bad
на этом этапе он меня уже просто умиляет. гнусавый и одинаковый, но всеми обожаемый и каверимый
Didn't impress me much. There are the lyrics, and the production is quite good, but I think it does not fit Dylan well.
Overall enjoyable but I feel like I need to listen again to truly appreciate it. 3.5/5
Geen Bob fan maar hier zaten wel wat leuke nummers tussen. Al met al prima album, weinig over te zeggen.
Ondanks dat dit niet echt mijn muziek is, is het toch wel een aardig album om te luisteren.
I'm sure this needs more than one listen but here we are.
While I have never been a huge fan of Dylan - musically speaking - there are some notable exceptions to it. Time Out Of Mind is such. A very warm record, attributed to Daniel Lanois' production. Frankly, this is a producer's record, and I would even say that stripped from the production the musical content would be mediocre at best. Unremarkable bluesy Americana. If it weren't for the lyrics. These are what sets Dylan apart most of the time. A nice record to listen to once in a while, but nothing to justify it being on a 1000 albums list.
Haven't listened to the other Dylan album we love had yet cos it's not on Amazon music but looking at the tracklist its probably better. This was pretty good, he can definitely write a song. He sounds very authentic but he can't sing everything and it didn't always land for me. Think I'll enjoy the more acoustic focused albums that will inevitably come up.
Dylan being Dylan. Couldn't really get into this one.
Surprisingly, the songs sound better when he doesn't sing them himself.
3.2
There is too much Bob Dylan on this list. But maybe this is finally wearing me down a little. I swear he goes out of his way to make his music difficult to enjoy. It’s like he’s afraid to show off how good it really is. Just like Neil Young, I wish I could peel back the noise. Let me like you, dammit!
Don't listen to this if you're trying to stay awake
Not his best for sure.
So Bob Dylan released a straightforward blues-rock album in 1997, and they still put it on this list for some reason? I guess I'll bump it up to 3 stars because "Love Sick" and "Cold Irons Bound" are nice songs.
A bit of a different Dylan album
Can’t sing for shit and you know it but has a certain vibe that I can get into. Thank you for Make you feel my love so Adele could make it a god song lol
Mixed opinions on Dylan, great songwriter but don’t always love his music. This album was interesting to start, because it’s a bit more bluesy than I usually expect from Dylan, but ultimately nothing really stood out.
Solid album
Maybe it's that this is a relatively newer album for Bob Dylan but goodness I hated his voice throughout this. Musically great, vocally awful.
Just really bluesy and mellow. I'm not a huge lyrics person, so some of the magic is probably lost on me. Dirt Road Blues is a hippy departure from the "classic Dylan" sound. There's also not the guitar heavy solos that you'd expect from BB King, Buddy Guy, etc.
A very bluesy rock Bob Dylan. It gets a little tiring at times, particularly on the 16 minute highlands which feels like an uneventful story told as slowly as possible... it begs to be clever with how long it takes to unfold, but doesn't really get any base hits. Standing in the Dooway and Not Dark Yet stand out.
This one grew on me, but is not nearly the level of Dylan albums that didn’t make the list like Desire. Still pretty good
I love some Bob Dylan, but this is not peak Dylan. I know this album is highly regarded but I could not get past the deterioration of his voice. Clearly, some incredible songs came out of this but I don’t think I’ll be listening to it on repeat.
Different, and OK.
Great music but I felt like I wanted the album to be over at the half way point.
I know that this album is highly regarded within Dylan's discography, but it's never done much for me. The songs are so weary and unenergetic. "Make You Feel My Love" feels like a standard at this point, so I will certainly give that track a pass. But the stale feeling persists through every song. I recently listened to Leonard Cohen's "You Want It Darker", an album that did darkness without ever crossing over into boring. This album does not manage to walk that tightrope, in my opinion. Lyrically, it's phenomenal. But do I care enough to stick around and hear those lyrics?
I prefer early Dylan.
I had no idea that the legend of Bob Dylan had a very un-legendary stretch from the late 70s to the mid 90s. And that it included a three album run of very religious tunes after he converted to Christianity. But it seems he found his way back from the wilderness, with his 30th studio album (!!!!!) “Time Out of Mind.” He didn’t find his way back to folk or gospel, though. He found his way back to creativity, but he did so exploring the blues. And with most things Dylan, sometimes his voice works, and sometimes it doesn’t. With more than two decades of wear and tear on his voice past the Dylan I’m familiar with, sometimes the gravelly grit is just too much. But for a lot of “Time Out of Mind” things mesh fairly well. His voice did feel totally off on “Make You Feel My Love” though. Because “Make You Feel My Love” is a Dylan song!? Pretty sure I associate it most with Adele, who recorded it on her debut album, but now I’m wondering if I knew the Billy Joel version that came out the same year as “Time Out of Mind?” Dylan’s resurgence on this album is an impressive feat, but writing one of the few songs to become a pop standard in modern times is a nice little side story.
MAJOR misconception about Bob: he's a grumpy old git. He's actually a lot of fun. He often takes the piss out of himself. That's the feel for this album. It's cartoon Dylan, but still quality. The production by Daniel Lanois threatens to derail the Dylan by Numbers. But no one makes them like Bob. There's no one like Bob. Celebrate the old bugger.
Ikke det bedste Dylan, en anelse kedeligt, stadig god sangskrivning
Perplexing. I dont know his except for a few famous all time greats. yes this is mellow and spacey - very gentle. His voice isnt as nice as I expected. but the ambience is there. torn - he is such a great, its well produced and clean but I am not hugely moved... it make take a few listens to grow, and sit with the lyrics - maybe another time?
I found this to be a really listenable Dylan album. The Daniel Lanois production is clearly divisive amongst critics, but I like it. I like the weird spaciousness. It is heavily processed (Lanois never met a reverb he didn't like) and yet keeps an analog feel. I like the grit in Dylan's voice. Some critics find some of the lyrics/songwriting a bit simplistic, although most of their ire seems directed at To Make You Feel My Love, which is well on the way to becoming a modern standard. Heaven forbid that Dylan should write (and sing) a song that everybody likes! There is a reason this is Dylan's highest selling album ever. And coming nearly 40 years into his career, good on him.
Diciamo 3
I am happy to report it that this album had no harmonica in it and therefore I thought it was a lot better than the previous Bob Dylan one. I still don't really remember any of the songs tho
Not the biggest Bob Dylan fan but it wasn’t bad- I enjoyed.
I expected this to be an “emperor’s new clothes” kind of album, but I actually liked it. The texture of the instruments blended with and complimented his raspy vocals. The organ gave the songs a mysterious, vintage quality. Loved the tone and mix on the bass. Basically, I’m a bigger fan of the production than the songs themselves. 3.3
Some Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen vibes on here. Others are sort of meandering. A lot of talk in the wiki about how the production took away from Dylan's performance. I think it helped bring relevance to his music that was/is lacking. The biggest cultural impact from this album was "soy bomb". 3.6
Decent Dylan for 1987.
This was better than I expected to be honest, love the blues grooves throughout the album.
Great songs, rough singing voice.
Bobby OK.
Not bad, not really the best Bob Dylan
Jazzy and cool
Ei ehkä parasta Bob Dylania. Enemmän blues soundista kuin akustista folkkia. Eikä edes huuliharppua mukana. Parhaat: Standing In The Doorway, Not Dark Yet
so make you feel my love is an amazing song, lyrically and musically, lyrically cause of bob, but not so musically… i have to admit, i prefer most covers of that song over his and adele’s version is one of my favourite songs ever, this song alone brings up the album and then on top of that, i actually didn’t mind this too tough, i preferred it to the other one i had to listen to. something about a door or the other side, i can’t remember but it was long and i enjoyed it. though him saying, ‘ i eat when i’m hungry, i drink if i have thirst’ or something like that was just… great storytelling bob, truly.
Rock/Pop, s.s., meist soft, 1997 -> 3
C+ Love Sick 3 Dirt Road Blues 3 Standing In The Doorway 3 Million Miles 3 Tryin' To Get To Heaven 3 Til I Fell In Love With You 3 Not Dark Yet 3 Cold Irons Bound 3 Make You Feel My Love 3 Can't Wait 3 Highlands 2 Dylan is an annoying little b**** with albums that are too long and a voice that makes ears bleed. Conversely, he has written some great tracks for other people. This album has "Make You Feel My Love", which Adele sings to perfection.
6.5/10
A Bob Dylan album I’m not familiar with, given this came out late 90s for a man who was in his peak in the 60’s I didn’t have high hopes. Funnily though I recognise a few songs off this album, one probably thanks to Adele. This is actually a really good album and would mark a return to form for Dylan. I’m sure at the time it would have be marketed as his best since blood on the tracks. Glad I listened and this deserves to be on the list, will I come back to it? Probably not I’m more likely to stick on classic Dylan.
A true return to form from Dylan with an album that took me a few listens to get into. My personal favourite track being Not Dark Yet.
3.5
Trying’ to Get to Heaven is the best song. Enjoyable for the most part but BL. Bad length.
Love sick and not dark yet are fantastic songs. There's some other bits of goodness scattered through too but dear god the length is terrible and very boring at parts.
Enjoyed half the album or so, good story telling. Makes me want to check out his other work now. Kinda nasally sounding at times but good tunes.
Not too strong an opinion on this album. When I first heard his singing voice, I thought I would care more, but 30 seconds and I was already completely used to it. If anything, I thought it helped with the mood. I enjoyed the long drawn out track about him ordering eggs and then failing to draw a waitress. Decent album. Not looking into the history of this one.
Good album if you like Bob Dylan. Can't say I'm a fan, but I liked the bluesy themes in a lot of the songs. He does have a legendary line "and I been to gay Paris" in the song 'Not Dark Yet'.
3-4
Not the best of Dylan’s work
A fine Dylan album, especially for his late-period works. But, I don't think it is "essential" listening.
More Bobbles! Always a pleasure. However, I think that this, along with a bit of mid- to late-era Dylan, falls into a trap of each song being either (a) a traditional blues number or (b) a 23 beats per minute dirge. Luckily, I absolutely love his 23 beats per minute dirges, but I can definitely do without the type of blues that threatens to introduce a honky tonk piano at any moment. Also Bob, no-one has ever written a good 16 minute song. The closing track of this album is a brilliant 4 minute song that lasts for 16. Unnecessary.
It was OK. Nice background sound.
Pretty enjoyable low-key blues from the Dylster. Good background while making dinner vibe. Still didn't have anything I was clamouring for. Loved the reflective epic closer. Fave track: Highlands
I have to be in the right mood for later-eta Dylan. He sounds more and more like an old chair. There’s a lot more slow blues tracks here, which he still writes and plays well, but I never attach to quite as much as his late 60s and early 70s stuff, though there are a couple tracks here I will definitely add to some playlists. (And finding one or two songs to keep listening to from an album I didn’t love is one of my favourite things from this project!) A strong three stars for now. Fave track: Standing in the Doorway
Modern Dylan just isn't that interesting.
solid album. had few songs that i like but its not much more than that.
Not the Bob I know but pretty good
You can hear the recovery from creative pause in the music, especially emphasized by the atmospheric sounds conjured by the producer Bob didn't even like. It's aching, it's recovering, it's trying to see something new after decades of notoriety. I don't think it reaches the scope of some of his other releases, but its' relevance in one of the most important catalogues of music really makes it stand out
Not Dark Yet and Make You Feel My Love are superb tracks. A couple of the other tracks are vibey, but long. Otherwise this is a true test of patience. I would have no problem with 30 minutes of old man blues being cut. 2.7
I feel like you have to be in the right mood to listen to this.
Make You Feel My Love and Not Dark Yet are amazing but the rest no so much. It's kinda unfair to listen Dylan's discography in random mode, but that's what I can't help with.
Bob! Descent album and I had my toe tapping
It was an ok album, not one of my favorites of his. Kind of went on for a bit too long.
I've nevet really listened to Bob Dylan before and it wasn't my favorite. I was starting to dig the end end of the album, maybe I was liking it the more I listened, but perhaps I just don't like the storytelling style of music as much as the next. I'd like to give some of his older stuff a chance though, before his voice was completely gravel.
A decent return to form for Dylan, but with not enough memorable material to make it too far above average
Overall Good, nothing stands out
I think I prefer older Dylan, but this was acceptable.
SOY BOMB
Bob Dylan can get me into a thoughtful mood that is hard for any other artist to get me into; I really like a lot of his classic albums. I went back and forth between 3 and 4 a couple times while listening to this one I really got into the vibe halfway through, despite disliking the way his voice sounded at the beginning. I especially liked Not Dark Yet, and liked the two following songs. I was somewhat leaning towards 4, but then I hit the last song, which was just too long for me, given how little it changed or grew 3.5/5 Best track: Not Dark Yet
I know everyone loves this album, but I’m just not a huge fan of his singing. The songs themselves are fine, if perhaps a little long.
Didn’t realise that Adele song was a cover. Good album. I feel like there is so much Dylan to listen to that this can’t be the best by a long way. It was all fine. Nice. Average. Will listen again but probs will investigate earlier Dylan
Standing in the Doorway sounds like Dire Straits :) I like this album more than the other Bob Dylan albums we have gotten so far, but I am firmly in the camp that Bob Dylan is not really my type of music. This one is a 3.5 but, like most Bob Dylan we have heard, I am rounding down because it feels like a lot of the same throughout the album. Not too exciting.
Not at all what I was expecting from Bob Dylan to start with Love Sick, but then looked and saw this album is from 1997 so a much different style. This whole album is kind of weird sounding Bob Dylan does the 90s blues with a weird singing voice. Cold Iron Bound is definitely my top song on this one. Other than that nothing really stood out. I wish this was like 30 minutes shorter. They could have cut out the whole last song that seemed like it was never going to end. Was thinking a 2 on this but the instrumentals are quite good so I'll go low 3
Man Bob's voice has taken a turn. Not bad just sounds like he smoked a pack or two daily for like 40 years. Adds a nice lil ruggedness to it. Nothing really stands out for me here, but nothing really bad. Just a little too long for what it is to me. Solid 3
More proof that can write but should have never performed.
I'm depressed forever now, thanks.
interessant
Sounded different for a Bon Dylan album, which is good. It was fine, not much more to say.
Bob Dylan is known for his masterfully crafted lyrics, but it feels like he's phoning it in on this one.
very bluesy but he sings it like Tom Waits for some reason
Actually interesting and a decent listen for me, who finds Dylan boring most of the time. I like his take in folk rock, although the blues fiddlings are pretty boring.
Not as annoying as his other albums we've listened to in this list
Don't mind this one too much...
This grew on me - I wasn’t too impressed at first. The bluesy numbers are pretty standard fare but they suit Bob’s older, more gravelly voice well and there’s a certain charm to them. It’s the ballads where he does his best work, though. Songs like Not Dark Yet and Standing in the Doorway really hit the spot. Still, there’s definitely some filler and the whole thing does drag on a bit... 2.5 / 3
