In a nutshell: the twang is strong in this one. Music is a bit meh BUT I applaud Dwight's strategic career moves. Playing gigs at rock and punk bars in California instead of heading straight to Nashville was the best idea. The music doesn't sound overproduced. You can hear the soft rock and rootsy country sound because of it. The kind of music you would hear in a line dancing scene in a movie. Plus points for Dwight working with one of his heroes- Buck Owens. Overall: 4/10

1.5 stars Not for me. Sounded like run of the mill, inoffensive, uninteresting country. But it sounded competent and probably right up the alley for someone who wants that. It’s just not me. I wasn’t disgusted but I’ll never think about this album again.

I bet this made a lot of people wanna say buenas noches to this album and pass out in a lonely room from boredom.

Seems like a good record for country music listeners.

Not into country so a struggle here.

Not for me

Don't have much to say, just wanna be myself.

Country, 1988 -> 2

Yeah, look....while the guitar work is really good on this record, I can't say that 'Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room' is my cup of tea. No disrespect to Dwight Yoakam, I'm sure he's a decent bloke and all, but this is the sort of country music that doesn't really do it for me. Y'know, the kind with almost yodelled vocals, fiddles and slide guitars. His big hit on this record, 'Streets of Bakersfield', is a duet with Buck Owens, who originally popularised the song. I've previously drawn a Buck Owens record in this project and I called it "generic country for people who aren't really paying attention." Well, same goes for Dwight Yoakam. Similarly with Buck Owens though, if 'the Bakersfield Sound' is your thing, definitely check out Dwight Yoakam. This is just the sort of music I can't really do. Outlaw country (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson) I can dig because the lyrics are interesting and dark, but not this sort of "pickup truck, luurv" stuff. Best songs: Nil

The inclusion of this album is really unfortunate. I'm a life-long fan of country music and I absolutely love Dwight's Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. By this point in his career, though, he and the band are just phoning it in; creating a lifeless, tedious album. It's like telling someone who's naive but curious about hard rock that they MUST hear Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door. Which brings up a bigger point. 550 albums in, it is clear that Dimery is rather disinterested in American roots music. Which is kind of astonishing for a person who holds himself out as an historian of 20th Century music, and touts this list as music people SHOULD hear. Those two boasts strongly infer an authority over the subject matter. Any such authority comes with a responsibility to at least attempt to objectively curate the list based on historical relevance/importance. The complete lack of American blues masters, and the haphazard selection of country and jazz albums, paired with the inclusion of scores of truly mediocre albums from the 80s and 90s reflects an abdication of that responsibility, undermining his claim that he is acting, not as simply a fan, but as an historian. I love this list, and this project. I'm really glad he's done it, and I've been exposed to albums that I adore. But let's be honest: it appears to be nothing more than a list of music that Dimery has fallen in love with over his life time, with albums he doesn't understand by artists he's been told, or read, are important. I take issue with his boasts because they will result in a lot of people remaining convinced that a lot of great music is not worth listening to. (Country sucks!) EVERYTHING we are listening to traces back to the vein of music that flowed out of Appalachia in the 1900s and 1910s with the advent of phonographic recording. Bluegrass, Country, and Blues are the original three forks off of that vein. While all are represented on this list, they are represented incredibly poorly; as though no effort has been made to understand the history or explore each fork's deep and magnificent legacy. It makes me sad because a lot of curious people will take away (or have reinforced) a sense that these styles must be inherently lifeless, tedious, quaint, and insignificant based on these poorly-curated representations; or worse, believe that their lasting value is the influence they had on popular recordings from 1964-1990.

Not a country fan

Yikes these lyrics. 2.

Buenas notches from a lonely room parece bué uma versão americana do zé amaro

Country is a vibe at the best of times. Today wasn't a country vibe for me, so instead I had to listen to an uncomfortable amount of songs that were about how much the singer hates lying women. I can recognize that it is good country, but this is definitely "turn your brain off and don't listen too deeply"-music, which kinda sucks. Might've given this a higher rating if I was traveling somewhere.

Not what I anticipated at all. A good listen, but not a ton of diversity in the songs making it feel less cohesive and more stale. The touches of inspiration were really good.

There are way too many country albums on this list if you look at the popularity of this genre outside America. This is quite OK as a country album, but I wouldn't listen to it again voluntarily

I was shocked when i saw this guys photo. The ultimate "that guy" from a movie. Even after this listen I still won't know his name. Music is fine but not for me.

I generally think social progressivism and the me too movement has been a net negative for artistic quality. But then you hear a once wildly popular album like this in which a plurality of seemingly innocuous country songs are about murdering your girlfriend for cheating on you and you just have to nod and say ‘fair enough’

Hoo boy. Not for me

Not my vibe per se but I enjoyed a couple of the tracks, did not like the most popular one or the namesake track :3

If you like this type of music, you probably love this guy. Easy and effortless sounding. I just do not dig it.

Competent country and solid performance. Has all the elements of a country album from that era: guitar, fiddle, southern twang? Check, check, check. Lyrics about how broke he is, but everything is alright because of his love who cheats on him in a different track? Big check right out the gate (tracks 1 and 2/3). I won’t disparage someone for enjoying him, but I find it all too cliche in a way that I just don’t appreciate. I mean, he mentions his truck in the first track. Again, clearly talented and good at making music, but I’m just not a fan of pop country as anything other than background music. Also, can we just acknowledge that I Sang Dixie did not age well. The phrase “Rebel Pride” in particular means the same as it did then, we’re just willing to admit it now.

A country album in which Dwight Yoakam shoots his cheating lover, that’ll teach her! Interestingly, when Dwight Yorke expressed his desire to leave, Aston Villa manager of the time, John Gregory, said if he’d had a gun he would have shot him. Those things aren’t connected but it interests me more than this album. If you’re not Johnny Cash, then in all probability, I don’t want to hear your country album, thanks.

This type of country music really isn't for me.

Buenos Noches almost sent me to sleep. A conservative revival of a conservative strain of a conservative genre. Some nice fiddle playing here and there.

If you enthusiastically enjoy the first couple of tracks then it’ll likely be a very warm listen. If you find them pleasing but not particularly engaging, then it is likely the rest will flow by without too much note. Charming and completely inoffensive. I prefer country with a bit more bite.

Started out okay enough, ended on a really boring note. Safe and generic country sounding that is fine but boring and not really my speed. Also not a huge fan of anything dixie. Top tracks: I Got You, Buenas Novhes From a Lonely Room

Like a lot of country music, the slow songs are at a level that's so awful it's difficult to qualify just how bad they are. However, some of the tracks that are a little faster do have some great instrumentals. As for Dwight's voice, it's a quintessential country whine to the point of sounding like a parody. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

I kinda like some of the instrumentation. But, Hendrix was admonishing Joe for killing his wife, Yoakam was telling it in first person. That ain’t too cool Dwight.

Country album - hard for me to distinguish this from any other country artist.

This album is like a speed boat trying to go fast with the anchor down. In this metaphor, Dwight's voice is the anchor and everything else is the speed boat. If you can somehow tune the vocals out, it's quite enjoyable. But that's a BIG "if".

Well that's just generic 80s-90s country.

Que deux choses à dire : - Yaaaaahouuuuuu -hiiiiiiiihaaaaaa

Country

I hated this less than I expected to.

Production is very dated. Hyper clean, and the guitar sounds are thin and brittle. I know there are great players on this, but they seem to be holding back. Seems to be trying to hearken back to an earlier style of country music, but is let down by the stilted tempos and the crystalline sonic palette.

The way I enjoy music, which is basically all the "Music" and not the lyrics, defies me here. The composition, classical country, and smoothness makes me enjoy this album as long as I don't really listen to the lyrics. This album also fails me in the "I'm a hardworkin' American man" from a dude who flies private.

No thank you 80s country

It was only a matter of time before I got served up yet another Country album, and once again I have to ask, is this really a must hear album before you die? If you ask me that answer is no, because this album feels like what you'd hear after walking into a Country bar. The music here is painfully simple, surface level, and solid in being consistent but this is nowhere near a must hear. This is probably someone who isn't very into music's favorite album because it does everything they want all in a short 36 minute runtime. I by no means hated this project, in fact I actually like a decent amount of the songs here, but this is just so plain and unseasoned that I can't give it anything higher than the score I have listed. This album feels like eating rice and nothing more, sure it fills you up but there is no flavor to make it enjoyable. Nuff said.

I don't know what to make of it. It's country. It does what country does

My woman left me and I'm sad My woman left me and I'm going to murder her My woman cheated on me and I'm going to murder her Everywhere else sucks. Send Me the Pillow shows up and offers a glimmer of hope only to be snuffed out by Hold on to God. 1.5

I don't know, I feel like it's slightly formulaic for an inclusion on this list. There's some moments, the accordion on the title track makes a ton of sense. There's some good pop-country songwriting on the two songs that follow, "I Sang Dixie" has a simple but beautiful chorus that wraps itself up quite nicely. I do hear the charm in Dwight's simple, straightforward delivery. And I'm not questioning his gangster, he seems like a true Kentucky fella. But This didn't move the needle much for me. Maybe I'm not the most qualified for this record, but I do like me a good country record. This one just wasn't it. Speaking on country (kinda) music, it's a DAMN shame there's no Jimmy Buffet on this list. I know he can be a bit campy/hackish, but he's gotta have a case for a spot on here

I barely made it through this. 80s and 90s country is one of my least favorite genres. I hate the twangy (mostly) put on accents, the stupid lyrics, the bass lines that are basically just root notes, the steel guitar. And what the hell is with the vocals sounding like a pubescent boy whose voice is cracking all the time - like he randomly goes into a falsetto in the middle of every other word. Is he trying to sound like he's yodeling? What the hell? A terrible album (for me) although I did appreciate some of the guitar parts. That's the dumb thing about country music - the vocals and most of the music is awful but you have some monster guitar players in there. 1.5/5 and will round up for some great guitar playing.

As country album’s go, it’s fine. I’ll never fully connect with country as a genre, and it’s rare that any country singles or albums stand out to me. The musicianship and vocals here are genuinely good, and there are a couple of interesting stand-out songs. But no matter the positives I can find, it’s country, and I’ll never like it that much. 5/10.

Honky tonk. Not terrible, but also not that enjoyable. This gets more grating the more you listen.

I’ve gotten a little more lenient for C&W as I get older but this album isn’t for me. I’d much rather listen to Drive By Truckers and Dwight any day.

"Buenas Noches" is a country album?! No way!

I don’t know enough the genre to know if this is any good or whether it was particularly ground breaking. Nothing really my thing. I didn’t find it offensive but it seemed a bit one dimensional to me. Certainly there is more interesting music that I’d say should be added to this list.

Instrumentation is very nice but the lyrics were so bad. Just whiny revenge fantasy after whiny revenge fantasy. Then it ends with a Christian tune? It's bordering on parody.

Maybe some nuance is lost on me here, but this just felt like average country to me.

Such a cliche, honky tonk country album. The music isn’t half bad: the acoustic guitars, violins, banjos are all a nice touch. If this genre is your style, you can’t go wrong here.

Affirms my prejudiced ideas that country has never been good, to the chagrin of the "country ain't good these days" types

I used to think I was country adjacent. Some forms of country-esque music I liked, some less so. But this album is so very country. So pure. And I'm not sure I can deal with this much true country at once. Some of these are fun. Like "I hear you knocking". Really feels like Stevie Ray Vaughn. But ohers are so musically naive (Streets of Bakersville) or lyrically problematic (Buenos Noches...) that they are laughable. Many of these songs feel like they could be country pastiche in a Mitchell and Webb sketch. So overall there are glimmers of listenability, but I'm not going to be getting Dwight on the jukebox again any time soon.

Honky-tonkin' country that is just a bit too cleanly produced for my, and its own, tastes. The songs are dark and are pretty good! This production just ruins it for me though - I want songs about fightin', fuckin' and murder sound like they've been through the ringer; here it makes it all sounds too much like posing... and no one likes posers. Best Tracks: One More Name; What I Don't Know; Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Shoes)

Karmeeta raakana. No ol siinä pari kohtaa kun melkein viihty. Ei siis ihan ygöstä.

No nyt on niin countrya. Liian hidasta ja laahaavaa, jotta jaksaisi alkaa etsimään syvempää merkitystä sanoista.

A country album that feels right on the border of the more old-school style and the modern pop country. While the tex-mex flavor was kind of nice, as was the Buck Owens duet (“Streets of Bakersfield”), I didn’t enjoy this much. 2.5

An assault on my ears

With a name like that you can only be a country singer, so I don't blame you, Dwight, I blame your parents.

Good country that somehow feels disingenuous in its heart? I know nothing of him.

The songs don't overcome the cringe of honky-tonk music. The Johnny Cash one is pretty good but overall I don't find much here.

no mariachi embellishments? i guess it was early radio country, and that's kinda...interesting but no. This made me frown.

I don't think country is for me; at least not much of the country on this list. This is probably one of the less boring country albums I've heard so far: the songwriting is better and Dwight Yoakam's voice is more than just country twang, but it is still a country record, which typically means not much variety.

Standard C+W... what's so special? Streets of Bakersfield has some Mariachi/folk in there. Best track - Streets of Bakersfield 2 stars

A lot of songs about hurting/killing unfaithful lovers. Suprisingly he's never been arrested for domestic abuse. And one last song abour being a good Christian. Ugh. Nice harmonies though, despite the twangy stuff.

I'll take this over modern day bro country crap like Morgan Wallan, but with some notable exceptions, country is just not my thing.

Country is mostly a hard pass for me. At least this isn’t as mind numbingly awful as more modern country.

There were several eye roll moments in this album. More than one song that threatens killing his woman/ex-woman because of her transgressions against him makes him seem like kind of a psychopath. I guess it's a "concept" album, but ok. And are we still romanticizing the rebel south in the late 80s with I Sang Dixie? Maybe I'm reading too much into that one. The last song could've come straight out of the Righteous Gemstones, except that it wasn't a parody. I guess it's sweet that he wrote it for his mom after she passed. The musicianship was good, but I got too hung up on the themes of the songs to actually enjoy this.

Standard country fare. I don't know why it's on the list, it's not original, ground breaking or impactful in any way. I only recognized the artist's name due to its uniqueness. Otherwise this album was forgettable

Very very country. Too much for my taste but not without merit.

I dunno I guess if you like it it's fine, not for me Will I listen to again: 0%

Moving to TN as an 11 year old and living here now for 37 years. I still have a hard time grasping/accepting/liking country music. I do remember the song with Buck Owens.

Worse than Coldplay

Erkenntnis, dass Country auch nur Schlager ist

Not really my stuff

It's so funny that someone recommended this album to me and listened to it after I got a George Jones' album. Now I get it with the generator, incredible timing. Now do I like it? Eh, unlike George Jones' brand of pop country which was more alike baroque pop than much other country, this album is pure country and... it's well made, I don't deny Dwight's abilities as a good musician but do I like it as music? Not really, it's simply not for me and that's fine. I think my gauge on country is still very much aligned towards fusions with more familiar genres.

Apparently the Bakersfield Sound is not for me. Don't mind country music as a general rule but Yoakam's style leaves me a bit cold.

I'm thankful this was a short album because the boredom was hard to overcome in parts.

Just an unremarkable country album with a voice that I personally really cannot stand. Just way too nasal. 2/5

p602. 1988. 3 stars. Mid 80s yeehaw. Well done but outstays its welcome after about 10 mins. Probably best listened to when shit faced in a mid-West bar.

Overall: 4/10 Not for me. I don't consider myself a country hater (anymore) but it's funny for me to imagine someone listening to this and going "No waaaaaaay, this is cool!" He has a nice voice but it feels formulaic to me. Fav Song: Streets of Bakersfield

Ew country

Not a fan, the accordion pisses me off 2 stars Date listened: 03/09/25 Favourite tracks: Home of the Blues (Cash original)

I am not averse to a bit of country music but this was a bit too confederate for my liking.

This was so fine. Nothing too distinctive though - when it started autoplaying stuff after the album finished I probably didn’t notice for a good 15 minutes. Country music like this is never going to be my favourite thing ever but it wasn’t egregiously bad.

Not really my kinda country.

Buenas NO Sounds like a drunk guy trying to keep up with a very good guitarist. And a bass player trying desperately to play nothing but the root and fifth.

Middle of the road

I love country and honky-tonk music but overall this just doesn't hit for me. I like Streets of Bakersfield. that's a good one. otherwise it's a pass from me. not bad just not something I want to listen to again

Pretty sure this is how the Good ol' Boys would sound like.

Just not a country fan

- The first couple songs were alright. It was an okay album, I didn't get the whole way through it but the first couple songs were pretty good.

I used to listen to a bit more Dwight when I was little thanks to my parents; compared to the other 80s/90s country singers we listened to, I really didn't like Dwight. Definitely not a kid friendly sound and that distaste has really stuck with me other than a couple of his songs (none of which are on this album). Though listening to this in its entirety and being a bit more removed from old country these days, it brought back a bit of nostalgia and I do seem to appreciate his voice and the style of his music. I don't think I'll go back to this and listen but I am glad I heard it through.

Never heard of this artist before, will likely soon forget them.

1 Foot tapping country 2 i really like the singing 3 entertaining 4 didn’t notice a change in song 5 harmonica thing 🔥 6 feels very dated (neutral) 7 the name scared me but I liked the song 8 nothing notable but still fun 9 a good listen! Good story telling 10 like the duet, Spanish balled sound to it 11 fun, it really establishes his style of story telling in an average preacher song, good ending to an album! I like more political country but that’s just my mood rn, I like his story telling in Dixie and overall how his lyrics flow and his voice. Given his established name in the country genre and it seems he’s influenced by a lot of Hispanic sounds. I like the cover too it’s really sick those pants???? Overall enjoyment: 2.5/5 I don’t have much of an affinity to true country and blue grass sounds but despite that the album was an enjoyable listen with a few songs that I genuinely liked! Foot note: this is my first review and I might change the format into sections of grading?

I listened to half of this album before realizing that it wasn’t a single song. 3/10

Multiple songs on the album revolve around the theme of infidelity. At least two of the songs (“Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room” and “What I don’t know”) actually go so far to suggest murder / violence against women for infidelity, which I hated. The guitar instrumentals across the album are really enjoyable. Stand out tracks for me were “I Got You” and “Floyd County”. “I Sang Dixie” seems to promote Confederacy (old times in cotton country) over “the streets in L.A.). “Hold on to God” is quite literally a gospel song. So lyrically nothing aged well on this record - confederacy, violence against women, and holding onto Christ.

Not a fan of this type of country music. Feels like music-by-numbers.

Quintessentially country, but somehow feels like the cleaner, less rough version (in production and lyrics). Very middle of the road, depressingly steady and unchangeable drum beat and hardly any depth (in every sense of the word). Almost sounds like those cheap backing tracks you get at a pub karaoke. Could skip tracks and they would sound exactly the same at whatever point it was in the song. Boring, tinny, and terrible backing. Hard to choose a fav track and ironically ended up being the last one. Good riddance.

Better than expected but that’s about all. Just not my scene

Not a big fan of country music and this doesn’t persuade me otherwise

Sometimes, really only sometimes, I like listening to country music. With this album, too, I thought I could give it a listen. Halfway through the album, the nagging wailing got on my nerves. This is exactly the soundtrack to boring, bourgeois street parties in oppressive heat where I wish I was somewhere else. Fortunately, I don't have to take part in anything like that. 2/5

2 stars. Not much of country enjoyed but it was nice overall.

I love the music of this kind of album - the instruments are all right up my alley. The lyrics turned me off, though, and I found his voice annoying.

For a man that's compared to Merle Haggard, I think this falls short. He's a good honky tonk player, but not my first choice.

No wonder that room is lonely with music like this

It’s not bad country by any means, but it honestly just sounds like something you’d hear on any random country station in the late ’80s. There’s nothing particularly unique or memorable that sets it apart, and it doesn’t really offer anything that sticks with you after it’s over.

I don't really have the context to appreciate this album. To me it sounds like good country music but that's all I can get out of it.

Yikes! At least it is short... This has the same production level as a karaoke cover song. Not the worst country I've heard, but I can't stand country. Low 2.

Don't know whether yoakam is a voyeur or recently caught his spouse cheating but either way his fascination with the topic throughout the album creeps me out. Bland rather surface level country but without any texture to the music either??? Atleast Morgan wallen manages to add some pizazz to his music. I cant speak on the context behind this album so I have no clue on the impact thr album has had on the industry otherwise seems a rather poor choice for this list.

I really do not like country music. This album wasn't completely unlistenable but pretty boring in my eyes.

Apparently I listened to this album 2 days ago and forgot to review. Double checked my listening history, and there it was. I have zero recollection of a note. Felt obligated to listen to again.another 37mins later I’m no better off.

Pretty generic country album with generic okayish tracks. Didn't care for a second listen.

country. stereotypically so.

I do not really not know much about country music - but I know I do not like this. I think the pacing is too jaunty and the voice lacks character for me. Not bad just not for me.

Dwight Yoakam. How many egg references does one man need in his name? I suspect his middle name is Shelly, just to cover off the third part of the egg. I preferred Steve Earle's Guitar Town which has more of a heartland rock influence mixed in with its country. 'Lonely Room' is more backward looking to classic country, and mixes in a fair share of covers (nearly half in fact), such as the traditional sounding 'Send Me the Pillow'. I'm caught between two and three. I think it's a high two.

liked it more than “Trio”, but country is still isn’t my thing

Just not my kind of music. Really boring uninspiring country. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Helt grei country plate uten at den gir noe fot.

Seems pretty generic country to me, from what I've heard so far on this list. Why do so many country musicians feel the need to slip a bit of domestic violence into their songs about being heartbroken and drunk? As a genre it seems as misogynistic as hip hop.

Pretty much the most generic sounding classic country imaginable

ok overally but i really liked I Sang Dixie

Not for me, but not bad musically

Ugh country. It wasn't bad, but it's just not my thing.

Boring and forgettable. Maybe a bit catchy.

pure country. a bit boring but not that bad. I would say a 2.5/5

Old country

Don’t hate it at all, but don’t care much for it.

Not my thing

Country - ok and like it for a bit but not my thing. Felt very generic

Mid country

Both a bit uninteresting and weird

Boring country music.

Not really into this.

NPC country album. Actually good instrumental, but still completely generic. Vocals are annoying and just feel like they are trying way too hard to sound southern American.

Not really my speed, probably wouldn’t re-listen.

I didn't like country as a youth but have grown to respect, nay even quite like some of the more modern stuff. (I admit Shania Twain also changed my outlook a lot too!). But this is the old school twangy honky tonk, shoot my woman tripe that made me dislike it in the first place. The squeaky thing he does with the vocal is annoying and if I'm going to call out the 'rape my hoe' lyrics of gangster rap then I have to call out shooting his girlfriend in the head as she's sleeping just because she shagged his mate. What is the beef Americans seem to have with women? Music for good ol' MAGA boys.

Not a fan of country

quien chota hizo esta lista hermanoooo

Hmm. Honky tonk, plus 80s. Not a winning combination for me. Strangely I most enjoyed What I Don't Know despite that empty 80s drum sound feeling the most inappropriate here. I see plenty of reviewers have never heard of the tradition of murder ballads in country. I mean obviously it's not cool, but it's hardly shocking. Anyway I just liked the melody. Pretty much everything else here just slipped by unnoticed, it's ok. It's not my thing. He has a nice voice.

I've heard of Dwight Yoakam but never really heard anything by Dwight Yoakam... Country music is a hit or miss genre, this feels more like the stereotypical pure twangy country, all songs about a lonely man, who's woman done him wrong and/or up and left him because of all his drinking and partying at the honkytonk. So he sets about drinking and partying his problems away at the aforementioned honkytonk, but on the way his truck breaks down and his dog up and dies so he decides to maybe do a little murderin' on the side... Therapy wasn't invented yet in 1988 apparently.

It's country. I don't like country. But at least it's not the absolute worst kind of country. 2/5

Oulàlà, ça me casse les burnes, gringolo

Very very country. Old school country. But too country for me.

I've never been a big country music fan, and 80s country usually sounds to me like the most generic, cliched version of the genre. I'm glad Buck Owens got another hit with his duet with Dwight on "Streets of Bakersfield," but this version is almost laughable if listened to back-to-back with Buck's original. Just not much here for me, I'm afraid.

80s country has gotta be one of least favorite eras/genres. This is maybe better than most? At least it’s short.

The top review makes it sound much more interesting than it is

Talented but I was so happy when this was over

I feel like this is a good album for those getting into country music, can’t say it’s an incredible album but it’s enjoyable. One of those “listening in the background while doing something else” type of albums

Canción destacada: Streets of Bakerfield

Better than I expected it to be from how it started out. Pretty colofly country and folksy mix. However, I could have made this album, and that isn’t a compliment. Stand outs: I sang Dixie (heart wrenching) Hold on to God

Dude has an incredible voice. I just don't like this kind of music. I'm sure it's a great example of honky-tonk or whatever this is but I couldn't deal with it. 2.5 stars

We mogen weer country luisteren. Yes, yes, yes.

1.6 The harshest thing I can say about this is that I'd rather relisten to the Sheryl Crow album I just got 3 times over than replay this one again. The kindest thing I can say this is it's somehow not in the worst 10 country albums this list has thrown up.

I’m not a huge traditional country person, but this album gave me pause. At first, it was pleasant with songs like “I Got You,” but then most of the songs, including that one, had darker undertones of jealousy, revenge, hard times, all wrapped up in a lively country bow. But then ended with a random god oriented song that didn’t really match the rest of the tone od the album, which feels like a producer or agent led decision. It certainly held my interest more than most in this genre.

When I say I don't like Country this is what I mean Best Song: Streets of Bakersfield Rating: 4.5/10 2 Stars

Kind of boring.

lowk boooring

Really bland and forgettable. Doesn’t deserve a spot on the list

Not really a country fan... But this is still lightyears ahead of whatever that garbage is they're playing on modern country stations nowadays.

The band is fine, but the songwriting feels hackneyed and reactionary. I mean I couldn't write these songs, but that's only because mediocrity is matter of the heart, and therefore difficult to imitate.

Had a few good moments I guess.

I usually like country but thought this was weak

I'm not massively into country so maybe I'm missing something about why this made the book. It seems pretty standard.. guitars, fiddles, twangy vocals about heartbreak and loneliness. There is some nice guitar playing for sure, but I doubt I'll remember this tomorrow

Somewhere between Johnny Cash’s sincerity and modern pop-country pandering lies Dwight Yoakam.

Guitar is ok. Loves himself too much.

Yee to the haw

Wiejskie przyspiewki, ale milo sie slucha.

This one isn’t for me, there’s a handful of good songs here & I can appreciate some of the more bluesy tones & riffs to it. Streets of Bakersfield is cool, as a Spanish fusion song, very Latin vibe to the accordion there, in concept. One more name starts strong - give me more of the Buster Scruggs singing cowboy type noise. Maybe I’d like this more if I got drunk, watched crazy heart & wrote a country song again.

On one hand I didn't hate it, but it also sounds like a number of other country western albums

Probably a generous 2.

Entirely too much croon for me

Had it only included one song about shooting his cheating woman in the head, this would have been a solid three stars, but no! There's more than one! It's super gross! There's, admittedly, a pretty clear thematic narrative running through the entire first side of the album that actually does justify it somewhat, going from love, to adultery, to paranoia, to abandonment, to murder, but still. Ugh. Total vibe ruiner. Because the vibes are otherwise impeccable! Pure country from an era where that had largely stopped being a thing, hell yeah. Though honestly, the title and overall presentation of the album deserved something sadder and hornier than ol' Dwight is capable of. I loved you in Crank and Crank: High Voltage, sir.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh some of the music was ok

Toooooo country

Love Dwight’s voice, and the production here is super influential on 90s pop country, but the songs just didn’t hit for me.

This album made my will to live go Buenas Noches

I decided to get in my truck, with my woman and my dog, drink a bottle of whisky, have a few beers with the boys, shoot something ..... blah, blah, blah. It's not my musical taste at all. The lyrics were so cliched they made my arsehole itch! Well, that is, most of the lyrics - he started fantasizing about killing his ex because she had the nerve to leave him, not sure I've heard that sentiment in a supposedly 'top-rated' album before. I did manage to listen to the whole album, so it gets 2 stars.

Don't really get it, sorry. Sounds sort of pleasant but I don't enjoy that fully trad country vibe very much.

It's been a bit of a rough stretch lately on here. This is like, ok I guess? It doesn't seem particularly interesting to me though. I'm far from a country music expert, but this feels like pretty standard honky tonk nonsense, with very little that stands out. I guess this is well-ish known for having his first two hit country singles. "I Sang Dixie" comes first, followed by "Streets of Bakersfield" which is a duet with Buck Owens. They're kind of weirdly buried right in the middle of the album, and frankly neither seem particularly notable to me. I don't know, I get that I'm down on country overall, and it's not like the worst thing I've ever heard, but I'm not quite sure how it made the list. Favorite song: I Hear You Knockin' Other: I Got You, I Sang Dixie, Streets of Bakersfield

Ganske uinteressant country. Jada kona di forlot deg slutt å syt. Hyggelig med litt felespill da.

No bueno

2.4 "I got you" was a snoozer to start off the album. Some of the lyrics raise your eyebrow in 2024. The lead guitar parts really sounded like some session guy (dude has quite the resume) trying to wank off and didn't really fit the songs too much. Bass lines were pretty bland but maybe that's just country music. I wanted to like the album more than I did I will give it another try later

Yeah, so twangy. Really not my favorite of music, but Dwight is a consummate crooner.

I don't really listen to country music, but I remember this a little from hearing it as a kid and to me, this is what county music should sound like.

Not for me

Dwight Yoakam is chicken fried Billy Joel.

ok cracker barrel

Not sure I'll ever listen again, but it's okay.

I know it’s cool to hate country but this is just a perfect example of why country gets hate. Musicianship is good but lyrics and tone are terrible, misogynistic shite

This is the kind of music people think of when they say they hate country music.

Not my thing, but surprisingly I didn't hate it

Despite having an interesting production, "Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room" is a country album that lacks originality. The songs seem more like covers of other singers from the time and even of current country singers. Don't get me wrong, but I expected much more from an artist like Dwight, who is a reference in the genre. Even the vocals are similar. I could clearly hear Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan or any other country singer singing these songs. It's a shame.

This is the perfect example of when country gets really annoying. It's just a combination of all the worst tropes—the twangy vocals, high-pitched instrumentation, weepy lyrics. Oh, how I love listening to some guy threaten to kill his ex (and her new man). But at least he heard her knocking in the next song, so I guess the bullet missed...? 1.5 stars, rounding up solely because it had some nice melodies here and there.

#418. Bruh... every song on the album can't be about some girl cheating on you. Where are you even finding all these girls that are looking to cheat on you at the drop of a hat anyway? At some point you've got to take a step back and wonder if you're the common denominator here. And all this stuff about I'll just shoot her then... no you won't. That's some act tough keyboard warrior [microphone warrior?] pseudo tough guy shit there. You've clearly had plenty of opportunity and you haven't done it yet. This shit is some sad boy simp country. It's too bad, because the music is pretty good, but the lyrics are... not that. 2/5: maybe you'll get the girl next time, bud.

This is #day108 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... when I saw today's entry, I asked my wife if she knew what could be worse than, say, 1956th country? She said she didn't, to which I replied, 1988th country (for context, country is in my top worst genres in this challenge). I want to admit I was almost wrong because what's under the cover occasionally appears to have some Chris Isaac vibe, and that's fine by me. Good rhythm section with an electro-bluesy touch. However, I can't relate to the delivery; overly hiccuping country vocals get to be annoying. It's a 2 out of 5 since it wasn't absolutely terrible. What does this album have to do with the list of albums you must hear before you die, though? Looking forward to #day109.

He chooses what he sings and how he sounds just like he chooses to wear those pants. None are good choices.

Is this what all country music sounds like? Yes.

Country

Not as bad as I expected it to be, then again, I was expecting it to be absolutely abysmal

There are plenty of better country albums out there to pick but somehow this one got the nod. I would have put Garth Brooks - No Fences on here before this album.

I think it’s okay, I don’t mind the instrumentals but the voice cracking lyrics are most of what throw this album out the window.

Blind album and artist. Catchy at times but good when would I ever be on the mood for this???

Appropriately titled. I didn’t hate this, but it was a long 36 minutes. I much prefer his later work on ‘93s “This Time”.

Doyle Hargraves himself. I've never really listened to bar room country, but after the k.d. lang album, I think it might be an underappreciated genre. Dwight Yoakam has the right voice for the style of music, but there's something about it I don't love. This is fine. There's something that feels very mediocre about it though. The addition of Tejano music on Streets of Bakersfield is not a plus.

Forgettable country

I’ve been looking forward to getting more country music in this lineup. I was enjoying this album until we got into the violence against women topics. Hard pass.

It's nice twangy country music. Hard for me to get into, I'm not a big fan of the genre. I could see this being considered good though, the music is not bad and the guy is a great singer. His acting is not bad as well, though not relevant to this album in any way.

Not great.

Some serious country right here.

Way too drawling for my taste

# 339 : Argh More Country! Two in a row! This album does have it's merits and a lot of twang, Some great guitar picking, fiddling and accordion here. Plenty of clever country lyrics too, TWANGY country's just not my cup of tea.

Honky Tonk twang classic 80s sounding country. This style of country never has done much for me. I would stay that this was just fine nothing stands out to me just a bit bland.

This was not going to be my thing. Lyrically it's very not my thing. Musically whatever. The few rock-ier tracks have a thing I've heard in a few 80s/90s country albums on this list: very synthesized-sounding casio-ass backing music. Immediately sounds not like *country* music but like *80s* music (derogatory).

He had a nice voice, but omg wow do I hate this style of country music.

kind of whatever, i will never listen to this again. 1.5

This feels like a generic country album. It’s not horrible, Dwight Yoakam’s voice is pretty good and it very short but not something I’ll be revisiting

I spent the entirety of this album looking for the video of Kelsey Grammer introducing him on SNL, and my failure to find it has cast a huge shadow over the whole enterprise

This album is just... so country. And I don't mean that in a good way. It's of the era of when I was a teen, and my parents had control of the radio. So of course, my Dad would play country music. It annoyed me because I wanted to hear rock and roll. So yeah, this is from an era I did not care for, with songs like "I Got Dixie" on it. "I Hear You Knockin'" makes me think of the Dave Edmunds song. Next.

Meh, mediocre 80s country.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW 2 sterren. Onnodig makker, onnodig. FAVO: Streets of Bakersfield

At least in my opinion. And for my mini-anniversary, I got a country album. For me, as a non-American, Country is not exactly a genre that is close and familiar to me. I can't really identify with those country laments and with that culture where it seems normal to put a gun to the head of a woman who leaves you... She wore red dresses but now she lay dead? I mean, really... You poor excuse for a man...

I just can't do this. It's crazy how fast listening to songs like this makes me want to kick my wife, crash my dog and shoot my truck.

I don’t recognize the songs, but I recognize the sounds. It sounds like 80s country. So far this is still not for me. Ok, the intro to “buenos noches from a lonely room” has a very nice intro. I think it’s the vocals that I really don’t like. I liked the last song. I’m torn on this album. I like some of the songs and guitar work, but overall there is something cheesy about the sound that is not sitting well with me.

If I asked AI to come up with a country album, this would be it. Ooh my love left me. Ooh she’s dead. Ooh I wanna drink. Oooh.

Theres lots of country I like, this I did not

This is average pop music. Nothing special about it.

Home of the Blues.

Not unlistenable is about as enthusiastic as I can get about this album.

Solid country album. I just don't like them!

Well certainly nothing that makes me think "whoa, here's a country artist/song that doesn't rely on tired anachronistic banal recitations of the same barely legitimated past." Seriously, 1988? And all you could think of was this? I know, lets put some horns and Mexican-to nonMexicans-sounds and call the album Buenas Noches! That'll be intriguing! Yeesh.

Musically, this is pretty dope. Some excellent and inventive guitar playing, good melodies and arrangements, etc. But lyrically, this had me either rolling my eyes or cringing. "I Sang Dixie" was particularly offensive.

It's better than Nashville crap, but it's still crap.

another fucking 2 star and i swear i'm ending it

Not a style I'm thrilled about but it's decent

The music makes your feet fall asleep.

not for me

Boring

Música country estándar.

Is anyone else bothered that the title song is about murder? The music has some creative sparks, but the lyrics are what I would term the "religion" of country music--tropes without introspection or any depth. At least half the songs are about how women have done the singer wrong. No real story telling. Just an overall maudlin or patriarchal point of view. And what is deal with the album cover? Lacks depth.

Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room is just average country stuff, we've had some good and bad efforts from the genre, this is an easy 2 that is just okay listening and might be better for Tim driving through AZ today than it was for me on a dreary June morning in Hammersmith :D it's also not exactly the most progressive lyrically either, lots of older country stuff deals with some pretty bad themes but this one isn't one of the better efforts.

So stereotypical it borders on parody. I agree with other reviews here… if not for the vocals and lyrics this would be a great country album.

Not my cup of tea. This is like the country equivalent of overblown 80s rock. It's too clean, I like my country with more grit and grime. There should be no need to put a MIDI keyboard clap on a country song lol, though that was probably more cutting edge back then. His "country voice" is a little too exaggerated for me too. Otherwise, it's not really bad per say, but it's not my thing.

Bit rubbish

Not essential, there's much better country

I'm not really familiar with this guy. Although I am more receptive to country music than most, this album is not really hitting for me. The material is a bit scattershot. A lot of the instrument parts sound great (yet...why accordion?) however the drums and the vocals are not really doing anything for me. If you don't have a drummer or a singer, you don't have a band.

Perfectly fine for what it is- I just don’t really like country

This is pure country music with none of the salubrious effects of Delta Blues or Rock 'n Roll that created Alt-Country. It's so typical, straight Grand Ole Opry stuff, it's almost a self-parody. A CM meme. I'll give this two stars only to put it above Marilyn Manson.

Hyvä, nukahin

Kinda surprised it took me this long to get a country album. Doesn’t do it for me.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. It's a straight country album. I'm not a big fan of country like this so I couldn't get through it. I can appreciate that the songs do change in feel and instrumentation a little bit so at least there's a little variety. But it is not something I will come back to.

A little too honky tonk for me but there are some dittys.

Country and western doesn't hit quite right when it's pouring down outside.

I'm not sure why you'd pick this out of his first three albums?

Exactly what I don't like about country music, distilled.

Definitely a rewind to my youth and listening to this stuff in my living room with my parents. Not something I’d go to but it’s still good stuff! Listen again: I wouldn’t choose it but wouldn’t turn it off if it was on Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: I got you

Don’t love his singing style, especially comparing it to Willie Nelson who sings straight. It makes it difficult to get engaged in the songs.

Generic country album

Not terrible for country. I'm still jot really a fan of it, but it was lightyears better than current country music. 2/5

This record was pretty bad. What is it about the late 80s that gave us such overproduced nonsense?

I’ll give it two stars since it’s closer to the old, real style of country and not today’s bro country, which gets negative 7 stars. Still, his voice is hard to get past.

Bland.

- Admittedly not a fan of the titular song given that it involves hunting down and killing a woman in her sleep for having the audacity to leave you for another man. - I do not enjoy, or even love, a ton of country. But this all sounds....fine? Somewhat generic. I feel that very little of it stands out at all.

Not a fan of this one really.

Yee-haw

This was okay, but didn’t really do a whole lot for me. I don’t think I would come back to it.

Eh. Not bad for country. Not great either though. 2/5

Don’t cheat on Dwight Yoakam. He’ll kill you. And he’s really worried about women lying to him. He killed the red dress woman too? At least he just left the girl in track 6 and didn’t murder her too. Sharon Stone gave him a chance after all that? In other Yoakam yodels, a Southerner died in LA from drinking. Which was bad, because he was too far from home. But “the bottle had robbed him of all his rebel pride?” And here I’d thought the bottle was the only thing that gave people pride in a rebellion that failed over 100 years ago. When Yoakam isn’t singing about killing deceitful women or how much he hates California, he gets really cheesy on “Floyd County” and “Send Me the Pillow” before a super-religious ending with “Hold on to God.” Maybe someone let Dwight know that killing someone in revenge isn’t really godly. Well, maybe godly but not Jesus-y. This is such boring, boilerplate, overtwanged country music. Country is my least favorite genre, but the 1001 doesn’t do a good job of representing it. Garth Brooks, the best-selling country artist of all time (and 2nd highest-certified all time based on certifications of albums and digital singles), didn’t make the list. The top two female country stars of all time, Shania Twain and Reba McEntire, don’t have a single album between them on the list. I don’t really care for any of those artists, but they deserve a spot far more than Dwight Yoakam.

In general, I'm not a country music lover. This was no exception.

I don't often notice lyrics but man the lyrics are weird in this.

Yee Haaaaa

kinda generic; there was some cool parts that sounded like mariachi

This was a nice listen. I like early Dwight much more than late Dwight. I am not a huge fan of country, but this is the type of music I am looking for where I am in a Country music mood.

Not my thing. The twang was too much to give it a fair shot.

It's almost trying too hard to be a country album, if that makes any sense at all. (pls give me a good album i'm on such a bad streak)
