Reviews (page 6 of 7)

It would be fun to try and play some of the guitar parts, but the listening experience doesn't do much for me.

It's country music which already means I'm going to be grading it poorly unless it really impresses me. It's not actively terrible, but I find so few apects of the genre personally appealing that I had a hard time finishing this album.

2- Stars (4/15)

I just don't understand the curators of this project sometimes. They seem to have drawn a hard line in the sand with country music and declared that the only country worth listening to was released before 1990. Just a weird take. The genre is still immensely popular with a big chunk of the country, and personally I think the genre has gotten infinitely better over the past 30 years. I'm obviously influenced by when I was born, but I remember more or less hating country as a youngin' other than a few songs, but I've grown to enjoy some more contemporary artists. Anyway, classic country typically doesn't do it for me, and this album is no exception.

I don't typically go for county. There are some neat moments.

not a huge country music fan. This was okay. I enjoy more upbeat country than this.

I prefer his work in Crank

not my thing.

lyrics: terrible drum sound: terrible vocals: terrible session players: excellent the two stars go to the session players and the session players only. if any of you genuinely think this album is a pleasure to listen to thanks to Dwight’s contributions i cordially invite you to kill yourself.

I've had a few country albums so far and all I've learnt is that I don't like country. This didn't have anything to change my mind.

4 / 10 Country lento, aburrido y soso. El primero que quito.

Not bad for country music.

As I'm not usually a fan of the genre, I find it hard to be completely objective. I was intrigued by the idea that he was rebelling against the Nashville establishment, as all the best country stars (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, etc) had done before him. But I really don't hear anything special here. Experts in the genre will likely hear something that I'm missing but all I hear is run of the mill honky tonk with shamefully toxic lyrics. 'Streets of Bakersfield' is the only song I found noteworthy and pretty decent here but that's not enough to justify being on this list.

Lads this is just a bit TOO Country

Got very repetitive after the first few songs. Not really my cup of tea either

Country with occasional rock’n’roll. Good use of violin and guitar, although I’m not fond of the country slide guitar sound (or “yee-hah” country in general).

At first I really struggled. But then after a while you find yourself being indoctrinated and wondering how much a pedal steel guitar would cost. That said. I'm still not a country music fan.

There's several better Dwight albums than this

Not a country fan but tried to give it a shot. I couldn’t get engrossed in it

Country. Fein gemacht.

It's fine as far as country music goes, but really not my thing. 2 stars.

Nope can’t do the country music

One one hand, I'm glad to see something other than Radiohead or House. On the other, Dwight Yoakam? Seriously?

Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room showcases Dwight Yoakam as one of the hottest stars in the New Traditionalist movement, a departure from Nashville's slick productions towards a more roots-based sound. Yoakam's sniping at Music City in the media didn't endear Yoakam to industry insiders and some fellow musicians, including Nashville veteran/genius Steve Earle. Despite the controversy, the album is best remembered for containing Yoakam's first two number one hit singles. It is a fine example of honky-tonk, bringing the genre back to prominence. However, while it receives acclaim for its finesse, I'm not that partial to this type of country. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None

Booooo

I Got You- 3.8/5 One More Name- 2.8/5 What I Don't Know- 3.7/5 Home of the Blues- 3.5/5 Buenas noches From a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)- 2.2/5 I Hear You Knockin'- 1.9/5 I Sang Dixie- 1.3/5 Streets of Bakersfield- 2.9/5 Floyd County- 3.3/5 Send Me the Pillow- 2.1/5 Hold On to God- 2.5/5 Total- 2.7/5

Country vibes didn’t really grab me.

Decent country album. Got a little too religious for me at the end there

Mér finnst kántrí ekkert spes. Sumt er fínt en það eru samt svo fá lög. Ég er allaveganna ekki línusdanskall.

1970s country is peak for me, the 80s is country music in decline. I actually don't mind Dwight, he picked up with Buck Owens left off in many ways. This album is alright, it has a few his but a lot of middle of the road stuff.

Boot scooting nah thanks

Twangy, occasionally violent, forgettable. I liked the Buck Owens cover though.

I tried to enjoy it but the mixture of 80s production and C&W makes the record sound like the aural equivalent of a packet of wotsits - a little to cheesy for my palate.

Color by numbers country music. It has everything I hate about country music and not much more. I don't hear what's special about it.

Not a fan of country, but this older style is much better than neo-country.

Whenever I receive something unknown on the 1001 list, I can bet on country or electronic music, and my chances are almost 80% that I will be correct. This one was country; as usual, every song is the same. This album deserves an extra star for the clever use of some instruments in the last songs and for effectively portraying the country mood in the tunes, which is quite challenging to find in some other country albums on the list (they are terrible).

Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against Hollow Crown. We lost twice. If I were to open the dictionary to "country music" I'm pretty sure I'd just hear this album. I'm sure there are plenty of people who like this album...it just wasn't for me.

Nice sprinkle of domestic violence in the third track And bro followed up with his promise on the buenas noches song saying he shot her Bass is a little to simple and boring for me… You know what.. this is Margaritaville music Crazy, I Shazammed one of these songs a couple weeks ago. I thought the mix of traditional Mexican music and traditional American country music was interesting. Cool to see that all the other songs on the album are boring af Something I would hear at the country fair while eating a funnel cake and feeling nauseous from the rides. Or also when at some random dinner place in Tybee island with some guy playing this on the guitar under a gazebo with a drum track playing.

This guy needs some therapy....not for me

Probably the most 90's country album in existence

a bit bland for my liking

Very different from my usual listening. Not bad but not for me lol

I feel the same way as another review I saw for this. It's an ok country album, nothing special, so why is it on this list? I thought these albums were supposed to be somewhat important and influencial, but I'm not seeing what some random country album from the late 80s is doing here.

Bass + guitar right away is fun Vocals are a bit too country for me. Musically, the album is good, but the vocals are really taking away from it. It's polka when you add an accordion

It's okay, but nothing special to me.

Nimi ja kansi lupaavat hyvää ja räväkkää, sisältö on kuitenkin kädenlämpöistä. Sanoituksiin ie jaksa keskittyä, ehkä niissä on enemmän räväkkyyttä kuin ensikuulemalta tajuaa. Kuuntelin kyllä kahdesti enkä löytänyt mitään erityisen kiinnostavaa mistään aspektista. Tyylipuhdasta sinänsä kyllä

Teoriassa epätyypillisempi A-puoli aiheutti tylsyyden vaikutelman, kun taas perinteinen B-puoli miellytti (erityisesti Streets of Bakersfield, ft. Mr Owens). Paljoa toistamisen arvoista en silti silläkään kuullut.

It’s not exactly bad. But I couldn’t for the life of me tell you why this was chosen over other country albums. It’s “just” another country album, isn’t it? Why do I need to listen to this?

listening to good ol' boys

Generic country sound. Not a genre I enjoy so I'm obviously not about to change my mind on the genre thanks to this one album, but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever had to listen to. Would not seek out on my own ever though.

Music is good, lyrics are not.

I didn't mind a few of the tracks, though I refuse to believe that any album released in the late 80s that sounds *so* generically, stereotypically country could ever be considered a 'must-hear'. Still, good to hear Buck Owens back in the thick of things again. That guy seems to have been following me around ever since I started this generator malarkey.

I'm not going as far as saying he thinks his character is in the right for shooting his unfaithful partner, but two songs about it? Leaves a bit of nasty taste in the mouth, because writing a nice song about it does romanticize the sentiment, if even a little. Also a moneylender named Saul? Pfff. Musically I didn't mind this album, which is rare for country, but it is clear that I just don't understand the genre.

Pretty generic 80s/90s country. I don't know why this was included on the list.

This album sounded uninspired with very similar songs rhythm and melody-wise and tired/lazy singing. The production work was good and there were some more interesting bits, but otherwise I'd describe this album as boring.

Instrumentally, this is the kind of country I can tolerate. Classic, not pop derivative. Lyrically, this is abominable. Eww.

Um bom álbum para quem gosta de country

Sounds like pretty classic country. Twangy voice, tuned-up guitar in the background with a slide, mostly melancholic lyrics about being lonely. I feel like this album could have been made in the 50s or 60s. Maybe it could have been updated a little, or maybe that was the intent.

With a robotic sounding rhythm section, mediocre songs and pretty uninspired singing, listening to this album was near unbearable. My spirits were somewhat lifted by the occasional accordion playing from Flaco Jimenez and the fiddle flourishes and sprinkles of steel guitar, but these moments were rare. One or two stars, it doesn't really matter. Okay, let's be generous today.

Largely interchangeable country music, nothing to get excited about.

It was ok.

The only good things about this are the short length and the nice clean guitars. Other than that, it's pretty boring.

Better than expected

Passet litt stemninga i Lofoten, men er fremdeles country og ensformig

This album makes be feel like Dwight Yoakam beat hookers for a hobby

I don't think the music has aged that well, seems a little fake in places. Not a massive fan of his voice, but the album is listenable

Not my jam generally but listenable. The dude has a lovely voice.

Not my thing. I was curious because I had never really listened to Dwight Yoakam but knew his name. I found out I don’t care for it. On a broad level this cements for me that all music across the board suffered during the 80s. I don’t know what happened to make every genre put out it’s worst version of itself, but it’s what happened.

We got all kinds of music here. Country AND Western. It's not unpleasant but really this won't convert anyone to C and W who isn't already. Less rhinestones but the same music.

Not a favourite, bit twangy

I can appreciate the musicianship. This is just very much not my bag. Simply constructed three chord songs with honky tonk vocals....."Next!" 3/10 2 stars.

I've enjoyed the country I've gotten on this list so far, but this wasn't that great. Sounds a bit fakey.

Country Album, not my thing

Als je muziek gitaar plus een stem is, dan is het wel fijn als die stem een beetje prettig is om naar de luisteren. Dat is deze niet. Echt zo'n typisch countryaccent, maar dan met een zeikstem. Nee danku.

Definitely prefer to modern day country but still a little too clean sounding for my tastes

A short and fairly pleasant album, but very middle-of-the-road. Though much better than modern pop-country albums, I felt it paled next to the Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn that I have listened to earlier on this list.

Wanted to like this one but a bit samey and grating while listening to the whole album.

idk maybe this is like the definitive version of this style but by this point I feel like I’ve already heard every guitar lick on here a before in other songs. it sounds nice and does the genre well but doesn’t do a whole lot to stand out for me. the tremolo guitars in the chorus of “What I Don’t Know” sound really cool in headphones, I wish they had used 80s effects like that in more songs to mix with the classic country elements. I’m about to leave for Colorado, maybe I’ll like it more when I’m out west.

I hate this but also feel like that’s the city slicker in me refusing to click my boots, toss some hay, and hoe on down

Country music is not designed for me. That said it’s fine. Nothing about it really sticks out lyrically or musically amongst the 100’s of other 1980’s country music albums. Yoakam has a really good is old hat sounding voice.

Look me right in the eye and tell me this is one of the best 1001 albums of all-time. That's right, you can't.

So clichey I can’t believe it’s not a prank

Yee haw - apparently all about murderin a cheating lady, but it was just a bunch of yodelling and strumming. Not my thing

'Classic' country. I can appreciate the musicality and the musicianship but this just leaves me cold.

This gave me zero utility

I hate all those freaking people that say “I love all genres of music…except country haha!” Your attempt to be quirky makes you even more basic. It also shows you don’t know anything about music. It’s ok not to love all genres, but you need to appreciate them all for what they stand for. Dwight Yoakam stands for the two basics of country: yee and haw. Speaking of basic, this album has almost no distinguishing features. It’s so bland that it feels like someone is jamming an unseasoned, overcooked chicken breast into my ears. There’s no good reason for this album of his to be on this list, and it’s proof that whoever made this list knows very little about country. It’s not bad and does not warrant a one, but I could quite literally hear this crap at any bar in Nashville.

I felt like I was eating at Cracker Barrel with my family after a long day of shopping at the Wrentham Outlets. YEEEHAWWWW, DRY PANCAKES AND SYRUP PLEASE!

No thanks, weak two star. I made it three songs in I couldn't do more.

Not what I was expecting from the title

It was okay as far as country goes, not really my thing but not horrible either.

Streets of Bakersfield and Floyd County are the only ones I like. I guess straight up country isn't my thing.

Basically just another country album. Was this really something I needed to hear before I die? A dissapointing record.

мерзкое кантри с пронзительным бэквокалом как в заставке лефтоверс))

нет я не могу слушать кантри больше чем три трека...слишком непривычно и не ложится на ухо

Seriously country. Not really my thing.

Country.

Boring pt 1

I didn't like this record, but I'm holding out that there's something I'm missing. Sign me up for pained, afflicted, sobering, wistful country. Some amount of dirt, or edge there. The songs here feel simultaneously safe and pitying. Nothing goes right for Dwight Yoakam. It's all pain, denial, rejection, affliction. That's a part of the story, of life, yes. To me, it felt like too much of the same note. Maybe this just isn't the time of my life to hear this record. Maybe I need a breakup and a rejection and my best friend dying. Even so, I don't think this is the one I'd reach for. 2/5

interesting

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah had a nice feel to it, not something I will personally revisit Favourite song: Track 3 - What I Don’t Know

Not my thing

I don't really listen to country, but this wasn't too bad. Some of the songs featured an accordion player that gave the music a bit of a Mexican flavor, which I appreciated, but for the most part this was just country that didn't make me want to stab out my ears (which is a compliment). Can't give it three stars, but let's call it 2.5.

This wasn’t too bad, but I am not a big fan of country. I didn’t mind some of the songs, but many of the lyrics were about God which I didn’t like.

I mean, I like me come country music. But this was a bit much.

Thanks to this project I’m now familiar with Willie Nelson’s great Red Headed Stranger, which sets the bar for a love/jealousy/murder/redemption cycle. This record doesn’t manage to rate a comparison. There are some flashes of greatness—Streets of Bakersfield in particular. There was also some moderately clever wordplay and at least it wasn’t wall to wall culture wars posturing and cartoonish stereotypes like some modern male country artists churn out. But it’s a little too glossy for me, even though this is supposed to be a more roots alternative to mainstream country. The big problem was I just couldn’t feel enough from these songs to make me want to listen again. Unlike Willie, Dwight wasn’t able to bring me into his world enough to get over the repellence of his characters. And maybe I’m too sensitive but I thought there was a hint of antisemitism in “I Got You.” And “Dixie” and “rebel” are words that have meanings—they’re not just synonyms for the South. So you can take your traitorous, racist, revisionist history garbage and shove it, Dwight. There’s too much great music in the world for me to waste another minute on Dwight Yoakam.

There's something about country music that I have a problem with and I wasn't looking forward to this but I pushed through the first listen and on the second listen I started to get a better appreciation but by the end I was glad it was over. Fave: Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses) Who doesn't love a murder ballad.

I'm generally not one to disparage an entire genre, and I have been making some inroads into appreciating country in recent years, but on the whole I'd say country isn't my bag, and it's stuff that sounds like this that I'm thinking of when I say that. Is that because Yoakam was super influential and spawned a legion of imitators? I don't know. I do know that I happened to be listening to some Townes Van Zandt earlier, and Yoakam suffered horribly in the comparison... Fave track - eh, "Streets of Bakerfield", I guess, but it's more for the backstory than anything else...

Albums like these I wish I could do half stars, as it is pretty middle of the road. Country is not my forte and while I have enjoyed a few albums from the generator, this isn't one of them. It's okay but the twang gets annoying after a while and multiple breaks were needed.

First of all, because of the title I thought this was going to be more Spanish vibes and this was not that. I’ve had a dirty secret for a bit that I think country actually sounds good, although I never listen to it. HOWEVER, this got very repetitive for me around the halfway point and I was waiting for it to be over. It all just sounds the same to me unfortunately. That being said I wouldn’t mind coming back to this when I have more of an appreciation for the genre, or maybe I won’t idk Album cover: 2/5 not a big fan

Je dois avouer que même si je ne suis pas fan de country je peux apprécier la qualité de cet album côté production et composition. Ça reste un son qui est dur à endurer et le côté ultra preachy je pourrais m'en passer.

I'll stick with Willie N thanks

Dwight yo-cum

I was thinking it was sounding alright, but, Oh! He killed her? And stated it so casually! Did not see the song going there. Then in another song, "What I don't know might get you killed"? Creepy! Musically I like some of it, but lyrically I'm going to have to downgrade.

I do like some country music but was not crazy about this album. I thought "Streets of Bakersfield" and "I Sang Dixie" were ok, but not something I would return to listen to again.

Hmmm...really not my usual cup of tea, but tried to give it a fair listen...I struggled with what seemed like what often felt like very robotic drums and a bit of country by numbers. Older country sometimes escapes this by being less polished, more lofi with looser playing. That said, I started ro warm a bit by the end...just a bit though...my Spotify went on random country after and think I enjoyed everything after, particularly Junior Brown's Broke Down South of Dallas. Not sure I'm likely to warm to much country newer than 1970 tbh.

Fairly straightforward country, not terribly offensive.

2.5 I previously knew or Dwight Yoakam because he played Bruce on the TV show Wilfred. So I went in a little more open minded than I normally would have when it comes to country. Aside from some pretty disturbing illusions to murdering a cheating ex, I think this is pretty accessible sounding country. It did not blow my mind or change my perspective on country by any means but I would be lying if I said I didn’t at least enjoy the sound. Favorites include: Home of the Blues, Buenos Noches From A Lonely Room, Streets of Bakersfield, Floyd County

2 I'm not gonna lie, I've never heard of Dwight Yoakam, but as soon as I saw a cowboy hat on the cover of this album, I groaned. I'm really not much of a country guy, but I tried going in with an open mind. As far as country goes, this is a pretty innocuous album. It really feels grounded in the roots of the genre, however, with that being said, I'm not sure what sets this album apart from similar country albums of the era - maybe I just don't know enough about the genre? I would enjoy it if I were at a country bar, but I don't see myself listening to it much on my own time. Favorite songs: Idk they really all kind of blended together for me. I Got You?

Think I've had to dance once or twice to 'Streets of Bakersfield' at someone's wedding.

Best Song: I Hear You Knockin'. It has a certain toe-tapping quality that I can't deny. Worst Song: I Sang Dixie. The funeral dirge of someone I care nothing about. Overall: This ain't my genre. Maybe this is the Mozart of this shit, but I wouldn't be able to tell. All I can tell is that the production is decently slick, and what's here sounds as listenable as its likely to get for me.

I don't like country, sorry. It sounds all the same to me.

I am not opposed to country, but this one didn't do as much for me. Not really my style. 2/5

Channeling my Bakersfield vibes and place of birth here. Don’t think I’d ever listen to this album again, just now my kind of country jam.

Been putting this one off for a few days now because I knew I wasn't in the mood for country music. Finally pressed play. I'm finding it mostly inoffensive. Not much of a compliment, I know. It's not particularly bad, but it's not stirring anything in me either.

What a fucking boring album and also so whiney. Found it very misogynistic and he sounds like a controlling douchebag to go out with. Boring music too

Pretty darn dull. I sometimes like country music but this was just a bit shit.

I think I might just hate country. The thing is this didn't actually sound too bad, but there's something silly about his half-arsed country drawl, not for me.

It was a nice background listen but nothing really stuck out to me at all

2/5 well nothing much

There are some moments in here I enjoyed but just too much honky tonk and classic country in here for me.

neo-traditional country should not be a genre

Nothing special. Didn't finish because after a few songs it's more of the same.

juu eipä oikein iske tämmönen kättäkin viileämpi kantri. 2/5

I, alright. I’ve given country music an honest shot a bunch of times in my life, it’s never clicked for me, this one was no different. Though that said the music didn’t really annoy me as such, and I was never bored or pissed off with it the way I was with the Sinatra album last week, so hey. Wasn’t wild about the Dixie song extolling “rebel spirit”, but comes with the fuckin territory I guess.

Decent country album, nothing that blew me away but it was pleasant to have on.

The lyrics are actuallly quite clever in service of aggressively generic themes. In fact, the lyrics are to clever for the stories he's singing about. I Got You is a great example. Though it hits like a brick when you dig in on the title track. I hate the instrumentation. The Streets Of Bakersfield is underwhelming.

Guitar on the title track is fantastic. Nothing special as far as my exposure to country music can tell.

Tut meist nicht weh. Manchmal aber sehr wie bei Titel-gebenden Song. 1.7

To be brutal, it could be any insipid C&W album. Being positive, it could be used as Muzak. I listened to it all the way through to the end, just to prove I could.

Preamble: I don't know anything about Dwight Yoakam. Gonna try to be open-minded about this listen. The Telecaster tones are superb on this record. Reading on this, it sounds like the producer and utility man for this record (and much of Yoakum's career) is a guy named Pete Anderson. That's cool. This record sounds like a honkey tonk band playing through a ten foot tall rack of compressors, limiters, exciters, EQ, and plate reverb. I guess that's ok. But I'd prefer a more 70s production style for this type of music. But of course, I'm missing the point. The lyrics. They're good. This was a time when country lyrics were heartfelt and universally applicable - both at the same time. That's hard to do. And new popular country music lyrics are...well...awful. At least the stuff I hear coming out of the radio. But, of course, I'm missing the point. Dwight Yoakam's hips and dancing. At least, that's a big thing for Annie - who loves him. Ok. That's fine. There should probably be more country on this list than there has been. I mean, at least as much country as Britpop, right? Objectively, yes. But after listening to this, I'm glad it isn't so. Sorry Dwight['s hips]. Honestly, I have no idea how this stacks up against other country albums likely to be on this list. But I didn't like it as much as Garth Brooks and I'm sure I'll only be able to stomach a 4 star rating for his best work. Which makes me feel better about giving this a strong 2 stars.

Опять кантри. Опять одно и то же, только звучание более свежее.

I would never listen to this out of choice. Kind of enjoyable though. Love that accordion

This was pleasant enough as pure background music, but a far cry from being actually good, or interesting, new, original, inspiring, etc. No idea what the justification is for including this one on this list.

HONKY TONKY I'M A COUNTREEE BOIIIIIIIIII

Ugh, someone please kick me in the horse nuts. This state fair bullshit is way too much. Generic twang country crap. No thanks. 1.5.

Possibly the most country, country album ever.

Not bad.

Sounds identical to wveey other country album. Same chords, same melodies, same overtones of incest.

Shite Yoakam

I like country, but this one misses quite some oomph for me.

country ahoooy

80s honky tonk country that I don't really care for. 4/10.

Never been a huge country fan, but this is manageably short and sweet. Some funny lyrics in the first song but the rest is pretty depressing, which, I guess, is country's thing. Interesting how the instrumentation is put together with really formal solo breaks and each instrument weighing in.

It's fine.

too country for me FT: 2/5

What people say they hate when they say they hate country music

A more twangy album bereft from any memorable tunes. It does highlight Yoakam as a unique voice and gifted lyricist while still failing to make any remarkable impact.

NEJ inte country blä

Not looking forward to this one greatly, I'm largely not a fan of country but that's the point of this challenge really, to expose myself to new music and find things I hadn't heard before so we go on. The guitar playing on here is strong, and I don't dislike the songs much, but I am put off by the large amount of twang in the vocals, which just has never sat particularly well with me. The more upbeat tracks I do enjoy, Streets of Bakersfield, Floyd County. Usually I rate albums on how much I would want to return to something and the emotions it evokes in me. Not feeling much here either way, I'm not sure if I'll ever listen to this again but there's a kind of endearing nature to this homely, sad cowboy.

regular

Definitely not my thing. 4/10

I wanted this to be the album that got me into country but it just wasn't.

Slet ikke min stil. Dansktop western af værste skuffe

I can appreciate the innovation going but my god, why does every country singer sounds so whiny?

Country is not my vibe

It had some good ideas, but overall I am just not a very big country guy. i like songs individually, but not as a whole

I don't really like Country Music so this wasn't great for me.

I really have a hard time enjoying country music. It’s not you, it’s me.

Shite country

Laughable

This album was born under a lonesome star...

way too hick for me

Top : - Flop : Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)

The only thing I hate more that Yoakam's caterwauling ... is that he just dropped my overall average for the 80s! Thanks Dwight!!

I think the order of the albums is randomly generated, but back to back country… that’s not fair. Again, fans will know Dwight & he’ll deliver, sticking nicely to the formula they want. Whining guitar, harmonies, violin bridge, local lyrics. I just can’t do it.

Nö! Schon wieder nix!

Honestly, there isn't a star rating low enough for this pile of shit.

country. invokes Dixie. two songs about violence towards women

Following my relative reappraisal of Country from this list this definitely felt like something of a test..one I failed with flying colours.

And there I was bemoaning yesterday’s Gram Parsons’ country crap pile entré, only for this to be served as a main course. Being kind I could say the track that borrowed from American Trilogy was OK. The rest could have been filler from an extended version of the Parsons release. This is why I profoundly dislike country. It does absolutely nothing for me, and that’s coming from someone who loves a well placed slide guitar in a song. A painful, repetitive experience. A strong one, a weak two, but I got out of bed the wrong side this morning.

This is just painful.

Maybe the worst album yet, just truly vile stuff.

Bloody country music....

This album was so bad it provoked my fight or flight response. Dwight Yoakam, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

A big, fat whopping no. This is the epitome of awful country music.

I mean, if you keep threatening to shoot your lovers if they leave you.... maybe it's not them that's the problem? This is not redeemed by the music in any way. It's just basic and plodding.

This sounds like country music cosplay. Nothing wrong with it as such, it just sounds like a tribute to decades of preceding music that sounds the same. At this point I don't know if that's the dudes voice or an affectation. A moments the music is good, but that voice, the god awful title track and the fact 4 tracks in I feel like it's been on for 10 hours have sealed it's fate...

Actually don't mind country but those guitars were Aids

This was soooo boring!

honky tonky not for me

He's bouncing on my boots cheeks i love the way he ride

I Got You - 2/5 One More Name - 1/5 What I Don't Know - 1/5 Home of the Blues - 3/5 Buenas noches From a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses) - 1/5 I Hear You Knockin' - 2/5 I Sang Dixie - 1/5 Streets of Bakersfield - 2/5 Floyd County - 2/5 Send Me the Pillow - 2/5 Hold On to God - 1/5 Average score: 1.6/5 ⭐️ i wasn't very impressed for the most part unfortunately. this had just about everything i hate about most country music. and the advocacy for murdering adulterous people? weird there wasn't enough that i liked about this album to spare it from receiving a 1-star rating. oh well

I found the song about shooting your wife so deeply disturbing that although I would have given this album a 2 for being boring, that song just ruined it for me. I dont want to hear about a man singing along to his guitar in a campfire esque way talkign about how he held a gun up to her head thank you

Dwight, have you considered if so many women keep cheating on/leaving you, the common denominator is you? As a country (and western) music enjoyer, but not superfan, I need someone to let me know, would it be fair to say Yoakam is responsible for the turn of country to modern "Stadium/Bubblegum" country? It sure seems like it. This record is indistinguishable from the garbage schlock put out by the majority of contemporary C&W artists. Bigoted, boring slop 1/5

Country is not my thing. Buenas melodías, tho.

Is country music intended as serious or satire? Has the current President taken his charade too far? (Is it now time for him to break character and say is was all a joke inspired by a Peter Sellers film? The debrief would be a relief for some, embarrassing for others ...) So is this album the real deal? How does one tell? Being named Dwight must signal being hard core for the genre. Which I am not. To me, this is a weapon. Especially if Mars Attacks! (reference to the 1996 film). I will leave it to the experts to say whether adding an accordion is an unnecessary and frivolous adornment to such a serious musical style. Wherever the song about Bakerfield gets a lot of play, I wont be.

dwight, stop killing your wives

Unbearable C&W.

After todays modern pop country, this is the worst kind of country.

Mid 1 I feel a violent lack of interest in this

That's some sappy country but expected from an old cowboy named Yoakam. Not my go to ever but I'll take it over Morrissey at this point. The attempts at mixing Spanish culture on the album don't go unnoticed and the use of accordion is welcome. Some alright violin and guitar but lame themes like lost loves, death of southern culture, and God are cliche. 1.49 stars...goodnight Dwight.

Would prefer to be in a lovely room.

Klassisk country. Det er mit liv for kort til.

This made the list before 1993’s This Time? This album contains no new ideas and contains every musical cliche that makes country music such a caricature of itself - the same chord structure, same bass line, same fiddles. I was predicting the chord changes and melodies before Yoakam even sang them.

This cemented this genre firmly in the my bottom 3 genres, alongside Jazz and Rap.

The least 1988-sounding album of all time

Utter trash

so glad that’s over xoxo

Dwight Yoakam – Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (1988) On Day 87, I can sum up this experience in one word: Boring. While the album attempts to blend various regional influences, it completely lacks an immersive soul or any real energy. Despite some technical effort in the production and the musicianship, the project felt like a total flatline that was a struggle to stay engaged with from start to finish. It offered nothing memorable and felt entirely uninspired, earning a definitive 1/5.

I am entirely not a fan of post 9/11 country and this album was way back in 1988. But this album plays like modern country with pandering lyrics and some fairly uninteresting musicality. Won’t catch me singing Dixie. Not for me.

More 80s country. Please no. First song is actually not too bad, very average but not offensive. The vocal thing they do in country where they kind of yodel the words is very contrived and annoying but lets see if I get used to it. Five songs in and absolutely nothing has grabbed me, it's been very forgetful country-by-numbers. How do people listen to this genre for pleasure? It's so insipid. I'm getting nothing from this. It's so boring. Is that his voice or is he being a character? Final thoughts: very well performed and engineered. I gained nothing from this save from mild irritation and bemusement that this asinine genre is so popular. The album ended and I only realised the album was over and had been playing due to the sudden silence, it was like realising that someone in the adjoining room had finally finished vacuuming the carpet. I had completely zoned out and mentally blocked the album about halfway through.

Hard no on this one.

"But if I know that you've been cheatin' / What I don't know might get you killed" Thought that's what I heard, looked up the lyrics, yup, I heard right. Hard pass.

Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (1988) is the third studio album by Country music artist Dwight Yoakam. I have to admit I’d never even heard of Dwight Yoakam before listening to this album and I it turns out that I wasn’t missing much. Apparently he was (perhaps still is) an edgy outsider in the Country scene but before writing this review I Googled is Dwight Yoakam a Trump supporter as that was definitely the vibes I was getting. According to the AI summary he’s a libertarian who keeps his political views to himself. All I know is when Johnny Cash sings about shooting a man in reno I enjoy the vivid storytelling, but when Dwight sings about getting his revenge on his cheating ex it just sounds threatening. Couple that with songs about Dixie and God and I’m out. I listened to this a couple of times yesterday but can’t even remember which songs were which. I know ‘Home of the Blues’ is a Johnny Cash number so I assume it was better than the rest but I haven’t bothered individually rating them. I’ll never listen to this again (I hope). Track Listing: 1. I Got You 2. One More Name 3. What I Don’t Know 4. Home of the Blues 5. Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses) 6. I Hear You Knockin’ 7. I Sang Dixie 8. Streets of Bakersfield 9. Floyd County 10. Send Me the Pillow 11. Hold on to God

I don't hate this because it's country. I hate it because of the awful misogynist lyrics. Go to therapy, dude.

Really not my thing. Not a fan of country. Struggled to listen to all of this one.

Straight hate. The dinky percussion, the plinky guitars, the yodel-y singing, the stupid ass lyrics, the chugging nature of this. I really am just allergic. When the slide guitar hits with ambition I want to rip my ears off. It is no better when he goes more country rock or whatever the fuck italian restaurant remix vibes come in around halfway through. STOP. At least this album is short

Fuck this shit

Mr Yoakam needs to see a therapist and stop writing such angry country music. I love me some country music but this got to be a hard listen after so many songs about a woman leaving him and him seemingly getting more and more deranged about it. Not an album I would listen to again and I hope his subject matter has evolved as time has passed.

The simple drumming distracted me from everything else. It felt like music from a children's program with threats of gun violence. No and no.

This is why people (including myself) don’t like country music.

Gary music. No thanks.

Don't like this polished country, give it to us raw and wriggling

Country, not my genre

What in the honky tonk hell is this

Dwight Yoakam - “Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room” - It’s tough to listen with an open mind to an album whose LITERAL FIRST LINE is a very faintly coded bit of anti-Semitism, but I tried. Some of this is clever, all of it is very polished, and much more than just that first line grossed me out a little. Looking past the “problematic” (a 2020s term that WOULD feel unfair to apply to a 1988 album if it weren’t so very apt), this sounds like the mainstream Nashville country of the 80s and 90s that is entirely listenable, occasionally catchy, but still somehow thoroughly boring. If you turned this on and told me it was Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, or George Strait, I wouldn’t know any better. Musically, it’s probably good for what it is, but what it is doesn’t interest me so I’m not the guy to ask. A 2-star album that loses a point for being a little gross.

i'm seriously going to kms

leek me een country plaat van dertien in een dozijn te worden... helaas had ik gelijk

They distilled the exact kind of country I would hate and served it up in this album. No thanks.

A hard listen for me. Just not a fan of this type of music. Lacks energy for me.

So weird hearing a gated snare on a country record, it just jars and it's all I can think about listening to 'What I Don't Know'. It gives it this propelling big stage sound that it just doesn't need, like the rhythm section has been ripped from a different album. Not my thing, felt like it would never end.

Coldplay left me well, cold

dudes will kill their ex rather than go to therapy I had an Eminem album earlier this week and I thought he had problematic views on women but jfc Dwight you got him lapped also this is just a completely indescript country album, get outta here

Mindnumbing

i dont like...

This motherfucker really wants to shoot the lady that betrayed him.

Kuntry

Somehow I find him more charismatic as the villain in Sling Blade.

159/1089 i’m already biased against this kind of country and here he goes threatening to kill his SO oof 8/100

This was never going to be for me. I feel less intelligent for listening to it

Dog water

Here's the thing, I remember seeing a performance by DY and thinking this was one of the last bastions of actual Country music. I didn't actively dislike this album until the misogyny and bible thumping. It's a shame because I think he is trying to hew to what Country should be and resisting New Country as much as possible, but lyrically, yuck.

Divorced Dad-Core: Country Edition There's definitely a sexist double standard when I sit here and praise/sing along with country songs by women who talk about killing their exes, but then recoil at Dwight here doing the same, but the recognition of that double standard does not make it better for me. Bro, she cheated on you. Just cut her loose and move on. You don't need to kill her execution style, you fucking psycho. But yeah, on top of the awful, misogynistic lyrics, you got bog-standard, stereotypical country music with the twangiest of the twanged out vocals. I've heard the music from this album a billion times before. About the only redeeming thing on this is the slight Mexican influences in the instrumentation, but thats not enough to save it from getting the 1 for me.

I hate this shit, man. Like, I'm sure he's a talented artist, and this seems competently made. And maybe he's a great guy, I don't know. And this definitely could've been worse! But, man, I fucking hate modern popular country music.

This is a seriously overrepresented genre

Overhovedet ikke mit shit! Der var engang hvor jeg troede at jeg ikke kunne lide country, og det var fordi jeg troede det alt sammen lød sådan her

White ass music

I don’t love twangy old country. I don’t like this guys voice. Combined with the not great songwriting and the multiple songs about killing his ex, I am very happy to be done with this and not revisit

This is just awful

Day 87 Wasn’t feeling this one at all, is that his real voice? Almost sounded like weird Al doing a parody of country but that would have at least been funny. 2/10 Highlight I sang Dixie

Typical whiney country crap with no redeeming features.

Countrya..

classic country as performed by a cheap karaoke machine with I'm-so-sad-and-misunderstood-I-had-to-murder-my-wife to rival Eminem thrown in music: hated. (⌐■_■)

This kinda stinks, right? Shiny late 80s production makes it hard to buy as Country Music, and man oh man is it ever important to properly come off as Country Music if you’re gonna sing songs about shooting your wife and whatnot. Like it has to be grounded in Country Music kayfabe. This is not.

If only I could give 0.

This shit sucked balls

Nope...packaging domestic violence and a love for good ole Dixie in a pretty country package doesn't make it okay. It wasn't a one off...he threatens violence multiple times and then actually murders her. I don't care if this is a performance piece or a parody but the level of domestic violence he sings about with such a beautiful melody is just more psychotic. No thank you can't get past that

I like country in general, but I could taste the hay and cow patties, and that ain’t a compliment.

Not my vibe

Country automatic no stars.

Yeehaw let's wave that confederate flag, shoot dead some unfaithful women, and thank the good lord for leading us down the path of true salvation.

I feel like we’ve been getting fed a lot of country lately, which I appreciate because my feelings on the genre are starting to crystallize. I like how a lot of pop country really hits the “setup-punchline” structure between the verses and choruses. the title always clicks on the first or last line of the chorus and it’s usually funny or at least clever. I dislike the hyper produced country like this where the bass sounds synthesized and compressed to hell. You can also totally hear the auxiliary players like mandolin and fiddle waiting to play in between each verse line. This specific record was whatever until he got to talking about Dixie. Fuck that so hard.

The worst aspects of country all concentrated and distilled into one great big barf fest. Murder ballad about shooting his ex as she slept for the offense of leaving him as the title track was the peak puke fest. But "I Sang Dixie," a cover celebrating all that's wrong with confederate pride, was part of the slow decent from that prior pinnacle. The best thing about this album was that it was mercifully only 37 minutes, although it felt much longer. Hokey music, crappy lyrics that drifted from borderline offensive to outright offensive, but generally good recording, except for a few tracks where they put a single acoustic guitar on both sides of the stage which made no sense. He ends with "Hold On To God" after writing a song where he murders an ex for dumping him?!? Without irony? Dear me, if there is a god, I sure hope it's not his.

Absolutely horrendous. The affectation in the singing to add the western drawl, singing about heartbreak in a major key, surprise fiddle in pretty much every song. The whole thing grated on me and I couldn’t wait for it to finish. Not sure if this is a milestone album in country and western but please, no more of it.

This was pretty horrible. Disliked the vocals and lyrics. The music itself might be okay but isn't to my taste - the wrong side of country. Not for the first time, I found myself saying 'finally a decent song' then checking Spotify to see it has moved on to autoplay a different artist. Says it all. 1/10

Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room by Dwight Yoakam is very much 80s country—and for me, that made it a tough listen. At least it only runs 37 minutes. I didn’t enjoy this album at all. The music felt dated, and the lyrics didn’t connect with me in any meaningful way. This was easily a 1/5 listen. Favourite track: None stood out. Least favourite track: Honestly, every track. Album artwork: Nothing special.

Nope, no thank you.

There's a reason the room is lonely.

Oh no country music ahhhhhhh

Lol. Fuck off.

Please, no more country, I'm begging you! I know, I understand, I respect the big names on this genre: Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson... I mean, I can and will listen to those, they're amazing, almighty talented people! This was just unbearable to me; call it cultural differences, whatever, I couldn't go over the entire album, skipped past the 3rd or 4th track! Who knows, can't remember a thing but the whining, a solid 0 from me (oh, wait, can't give 0!!!)

Wil dit niet luisteren

Boring generic country sound, combined with awful lyrics. Not for me.

If I were a cowboy in the 1800s maybe this would fly. But its just preachy nonsense.

Didn't like this one.

Basic and I don’t appreciate him benefiting from Mexican music style

it was not easy to come to this conclusion

tío que pesados con el country dios mio que alguien me dé algo de new wave o rock no se.. 😭 como te pusiste esos jeaness?? menuda placentada dios mio 1/5

awkwardly this album made me feel a bit rageful sorry some parts were smiles and pleasant but overall it made me mad

56/1001. The story so far: we need more hip-hop and less country.

Ok but nothing special

Not for me

Yee-Haw….more like Yee-Naw 😒 Bailed half way through the second song. Country & Western just isn’t for me.
