Another quality Beatles record. It feels more like a collection of random songs compared to their later stuff, as well as being much less experimental and just straight up pop/rock. Most of the songs I really enjoyed. 7/10
The thing that struck me about this album is just how many songs have been covered by other artists. It set the tone for the rest of the genre and changed music history forever. Whilst it's not something I would actively choose to listen to, because I feel the industry has moved on, I do feel that it has its place in the legends book, and therefore deserves a high rating.

Objectively, the Beatles for their time were amazing, no contestation there. Objectively, their productions were/remain some of the more emulated and sought after achievements by any band or studio. Objectively, they are a snapshot in history well-deserving of their fame and prestige. Subjectively, this album was boring and while the Beatles as a subject should in fact be something to be educated about, the idea that their music/catalog is a must-listen in any other capacity outside of education and historical impact, is ludicrous. Give to The Beatles what is The Beatles's, but music is much bigger than they will ever be.
It’s The Beatles. Not their best, but this is still better than most.
For me, this one always gets overshadowed by Rubber Soul and everything that came after. Obviously not the best of their discography, but certainly a very solid early 60s pop album and a glimpse into their early sound.
Expected to dislike this, as I've never been a big fan of the Beatles' early work. However, it wasn't too bad. I enjoyed "All My Loving", "Till There Was You" and "Please Mister Postman" especially. Not an incredible album by any means, but interesting to to see the early stages of a great band.
This was overall a solid album, but only a few tracks felt like they really broke out of the boring 60's rock formula and were memorable. It did still feel like it was ahead of its time, and it's impressive that it holds up pretty well 60 years later.

"With the Beatles" is the second studio album from The Beatles and was released eight months after their debut "Please Please Me." The Beatles were on a plan to record two studio albums and four singles per year. "With the Beatles" did not have a single and included eight originals and six covers. In the US, the first two UK album releases were split differently into two US album releases, "Meet the Beatles" and "The Beatles Second Album." The iconic album cover was taken by Robert Freedman at the Palace Court Hotel as they tried to emulate their early 60's photos in Hamburg. Obviously, it influenced several if not more future album covers. An original, "It Won't Be Long," begins things with John Lennon on vocals. Authoritative "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" backing vocals. I always liked The electric guitar on this song. "All My Loving" may be Paul McCartney's best early Beatles' song. Clear, confident vocals by McCartney. And we have George Harrison's first solo composition in "Don't Bother Me." This is a decent song. The classic Chuck Berry cover "Roll Over Beethoven" starts Side Two. George Harrison on vocals. Another strong McCartney song is "Hold Me Tight." A simple pop song. Nice harmonies and backing vocals. Well, it's The Beatles. Probably the cover highlight is the closer "Money (That's What I Want.)" A screaming John Lennon in early Beatles' album is a good thing. He doesn't quite match the incendiary "Twist and Shout" performance but do you think of anyone besides The Beatles singing it? What can you say about a classic early Beatles' album? I did listen to their debut "Please Please Me" right after and, honestly, I give a slight edge to the debut. However, this album is essential, historic and a joy to listen to.
This is like watching a toddler learn to walk. You know eventually they'll be sprinting but they're still finding their feet. It's incredibly cute. Already you can hear hints of how great these guys become, and Lennon's voice always makes me happy. A fun listen to some favourites.

Dead serious. 3 stars. It’s competent and, as a Beatles fan, I love the shuffle-beat skiffle of their roots. But this s not why we love the Beatles. It isn’t why they’re iconic and it doesn’t merit being on the list of 1001 albums I need to hear.

Må innrømme at jeg ikke er spesielt stor fan av the Beatles’ tidlige albumer. Størsteparten av låtene oppleves som typisk kjærlighetsmelodier fra 50-60 tallet, uten særlig substans (6 av låtene er jo til å med covere). Høydepunktet for meg er All my loving med dens kule, rytmiske gitar og til dels triste tekst :’) Noe annet som jeg la merke til er at alle låtene er overraskende korte, og et fåtall passerer 2,5 min spilletid. Og en ting til: HVEM var det som tenkte det var en god idé å mixe alle instrumentene på venstre og vokalene på høyre side?! Jeg blir gal.
Ikke det beste av dem. Men synes det er et veldig sjarmerende og søtt album. Litt svak for covre i utgangspunktet så det gjør meg ikke så mye. «Till there was you» er fin, spesielt instrumentene
On the second album by the Beatles, they are still playing a lot of covers and their originals are getting better, but still haven't reached anywhere close to their potential. A strong record with the band bringing the energy from their live shows to the studio. Their earlier albums are good, but the best is yet to come. ***1/2 out of 5

The Beatles undeniably influenced popular music, I won’t butt heads with that. Still and all, this album is just dullish. 30 minutes of similar-sounding tracks, both instrumentally and lyrically. Highlight: Till There Was You

some highs and some lows but mostly just middle of the road. if I were more cynical I would say this is a transparent attempt to break into the US market but I enjoy the covers so it’s ok. best tracks: all my loving, please mr postman, you really got a hold on me

Songs are incredibly short as well. Probably wouldn't listen to this again because of music quality. Songs are decent but not very memorable. Wondering if stereo version would help.. (probably, liked the last track more and that one was in stereo) This type of music seems to grow on you the more you listen to it.
Two Beatles albums in a row, what are the odds? Another easy five stars since I own and listen to this already.
Cute album, the guitar/drum beats are simple, and mostly the same throughout the album, my favorite song is def Something. The funny anecdote: The song Carry that weight got stuck on repeat while I was at the gym lmao.

I’m not an adolescent girl in the 60s so this does nothing for me. It’s another example of how the author needs permission not to add every album from iconic bands. It seems like he thinks that’s required. It’s ok to say a Beatles album isn’t great and in comparison with their other albums it’s fine to leave it off the list for better albums.

A great collection of covers and originals. This music may sound super tame today, but I can imagine how square society reacted to the pounding beats and primal shrieks as John Lennon belts out the new gospel of materialism on "Money"
All the songs I like the best are a very talented band covering, arguably, at this stage of their careers, songs by better song writers. My usual feeling with the Beatles, generally underwhelming but comfortable and well executed rock and roll.
Some good songs but it feels dated and not as interesting as their later work. I had no idea they did this many covers on their first album, such as roll over Beethoven.

Well here we are with another Beatles album and I'll say until I can't, most overrated band ever.... The 2 songs I actually like are remakes, Roll over Beethoven and Money. Go figure. Cheesy music and just not for me. Will not listen again. 1.5 and will score a 1 since the best songs were remakes. 1.5
2.5 I’m generally pretty hit or miss when it comes to the Beatles. Lately I’ve been leaning more towards hit as I’ve enjoyed the last few albums we’ve listened to (short of most of the white album). ‘With The Beatles’, however, despite having a few of my favorite Beatles singles, is mostly a miss for me. This is the first time that the bubble gum love songs sounded really phoned in and formulaic. Maybe I’d feel differently if I was a teenage girl in the 60s, sadly though, I’m not. I never felt like I was the target audience. Also, most of the time no one sounded like they were quite on the same page, nor were they performing very well in general. The cover of ‘Please Mr. Postman’ is iconic, but ELO did roll over Beethoven waaay better. The back half is a cool break in the formula, depicting internal conflicts of new and old loves, which is when I felt like the album made any real attempt to branch out and relate to its audience. By the time it was over, I feel like it ended right when it was getting started, leaving me mostly disappointed. Favorites: It Won’t Be Long, All My Loving, Please, Mr. Postman, Hold Me Tight, Devil in Her Heart
2 And for our 100th album, it’s another Beatles album… and an early one at that. While I’ve already said my peace on early Beatles albums, I guess I can admit I enjoyed this one slightly more than a Hard Day’s Night. Hell, I might go as far as to say I kind of enjoyed All I’ve Got To Do, despite its cheesiness. As a whole I feel like I’m less offended by the bubble gumminess, though it did start wearing on me at the end. Maybe I’m just less (or more) jaded than I used to be. Probably wouldn’t listen again, but I guess I didn’t completely hate it. At least it wasn’t long. Also random factoid - this album dropped the same day Kennedy was assassinated. So by default, I guess this wasn’t the worst thing to happen on that day in history (though the CIA might beg to differ).

As Beatles go, weak
Where it all either started or exploded, or was that the previous album? I prefer "Please Please Me" to this one overall, and this one can feel and sound rushed to get more material out immediately after their debut. With The Beatles is mainly remembered now for the iconic album cover, and the cover songs, especially Lennon's lead on "Please Mr. Postman". But it's also like the 7th or 8th best Beatles album. This is just quibbling. We should stand impressed that they were able to put out a follow up album so fast with a great mix of original and cover songs. Plus, it's where the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership began. They'd certainly get a lot more interesting on future albums, but they proved here that no one could craft perfect pop songs better than they could. And they could seemingly do so in their sleep. Maybe that's why the boys are half-lit on the album photo.
I get it. The Beatles are slaves to the system at this point and have to crank out several records a year. So this is a pretty slight record. All My Loving is really good though. This is also top tier Beatles album covers though
Given what they went on to achieve, it's easy to forget that the Beatles basically started off as a glorified cover band. Nearly half of this album is comprised of covers, and I'm totally fine with that for two reasons: 1). Their talent shines through regardless of whose songs they're singing. 2). They've got great taste in music. I'm especially fond of their versions of "Please Mr. Postman" and "Roll Over Beethoven," but let's not forget their original stuff. "All My Loving" is the stands above the rest, but there's not a bad song in the bunch. This album's one you can simply throw on and listen to from start to finish without worrying about throwaway tracks.
One of the best albums by one of the greatest bands in pop history
Middle-Beatles is always my favorite Beatles, but I think I prefer early-Beatles to late-Beatles. Lots of fun stuff here, both original and covers. I'll give it 4.5 and if "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had made it onto the album, would bump it to 5.
Early Beatles were a lot more straight-forward, compared to their later work, but they were still great songwriters. Great pop/rock tunes for their time, although the charm wears off after you're halfway through this.
Beautiful harmonies from John and Paul. There's enough variety to distinguish some tracks from others. I also feel like some tracks like All My Loving, Please Mister Postman and Till There Was You stands out more than other tracks.

Early Beatles songs are swift and straight to the heart. Another great example of their greatness, if one were to hear Beatles from start to finish “it won’t be long” is an excellent start (and “her majesty” a magnificent finish). It could be 4 starts but god damn is “all my loving” one of the greatest songs ever. I don’t get to hear this album that often because I hate the stereo version that is everywhere on streaming, but I’m a proud owner of a “Beatles in Mono” vinyl box set so this was an excellent excuse to take it out for a spin.
This is a pretty good album. I feel like this album is a good example of toe-tapping. It's not super energetic, but gets you into a little groove while enjoying the music. I still hate having the audio split between left and right ears though, please let me enjoy the music with just one earbud in. Favorite song: Please Mister Postman Worst song: Roll Over Beethoven

If there is a Beatles album that could be removed from the list it’s probably this one, still a good album but too many covers and with their debut and hard days night already on the list I’m not sure what this album adds. Maybe harsh as if this was an album by another 60’s group I’d be singing its praises. But the Beatles already have 6 other albums on the list so I’m measuring it against those other albums.
Even though The Beatles are probably my favorite band, I've never actually listened to this all the way though. Good album boys!

Seems that before they took over the world and innovated pop countless times, all the Beatles did was create bland pop on front loaded albums that are more a bunch of songs that didn't fit on singles rather than a cohesive record. Well, actually that's a bit harsh. There are more than a few killer tunes, which mostly come when Lennon and McCartney sidestep clichés and write the more complex, sophisticated tunes, specifically tracks 2-4. Most of the covers are just ok, but the renditions of 'Please Mister Postman' and 'Money (That's What I Want)' were fantastic and the best sounding on the record. Also George already shows that he could be the best Beatle with his tune on this one. A decent record.

The covers pale in comparison to the originals, but wow, the originals are solid: growth from the previous record and a glimpse at the band's true potential. Hard to give this a 5 star rating as I feel there are too many covers and it's not nearly as good as records to come. But this record is better than many other 5 star records on the 1001 list, so...

The most notable thing about With the Beatles is probably its iconic cover, but there are plenty of aural delights within. John and Paul continue to polish their impeccable songwriting chops, George contributes his first number (even if he later admitted he didn’t care for it), and even Ringo gets to experiment with various percussive instruments.

I really only like later Beatles stuff, but this was worth it for Don't Bother Me and Not A Second Time. You can hear the beginnings of the musical experimentation in those songs, among the covers and pop songs.
Not quite as good as their first album, and I prefer their later work, but still a great time.
Beatles don't disappoint
The fact that I’m only hearing the vocals in one earbud so far is really throwing me off from songs that I actually really like and would otherwise add to my playlist. I’m 4 songs on and the only one that’s heard any vocals is my right ear and it’s really bothering me. Why did they do that? Don’t Bother Me Sounds super similar to The Night Before to me… just something I noticed. I like the night before more though. No but seriously I think a lot of these songs would have made it into my playlist if the singing was in both earbuds. Are there a lot of people out there who actually like that? And all the instrumentals in the other ear? I don’t love it and it’s really throwing me off and making me not love these songs as much as I probably could. I love the lyrics of till there was you. They’re really cute BUT again kind of ruined by the split audio thing going on. I’ve heard please mister postman before, but I never knew that it was the beatles. Or maybe it’s a cover cause I know they’ve done a few covers before. I don’t mind (and actually kind of like) how short some of the songs are. I’m actually quite disappointed because most of these songs would probably make it to my playlist!! But the unequal audio kind of ruins the album for me. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that I have a headache. Kind of a waste imho. Roll over beethoven only gets the highest rating because I’ve heard it before and it’s already in my playlist. If the audio were different it probably could have been several other songs that would have been my favorite. Oh- did I mention that I don’t like how the audio is split between headphones. :/

FUCK this is good. No wonder they took the world by storm. It's just one banger after the next. Of course, their later stuff is more sophisticated but this has a lightness, energy, and magic that doesn't come around every day.
This was the one Beatles album I picked up on CD during the 2009 remaster reissues because I didn't have it in any other format already. It made me appreciate the earlier Beatles much more. Some real nice songwriting and choice covers. Such great energy.
Not the best of the Beatles work, obviously. But a strong start for their sound. Glad to listen to it in full, I only knew a couple of the songs.

Never listened to much of the early beatles content on original albums...bit of near perfect pop that only slightly hints at where they would end up...enjoyed though

Meh, not big on the Beatles but there are some fun, catchy tracks in here.
I never really listened to full albums of early Beatles as I'm more of a Rubber Soul and beyond guy. This is a decent enough debut for the phenomenon but it hardly holds a candle to the later work. There's some "meh" covers thrown in. My personal highlight is Not A Second Time. It's not bad really, but it's not terribly exciting and they were a few years away from really killing it like only they could.

Where it all starts to come together. As with all their albums, ridiculous that they just knocked it off so effortlessly. The worst tracks are the covers and there's too many of them. And the covers are really good songs within themselves Not as good as A Hard Day's Night, probably better than Sergeant Pepper's. Which makes it in the bottom half of Beatles albums and yet it's still essential Plus it has a great cover.

It was surprising to me how many new Beatles songs I both really enjoyed and really disliked. Wasn’t expecting this album to disappoint me but it did in a way. I enjoyed just less than half the songs on the album. While it was released during the earlier side of their rise in the music world, I was still surprised by my lack of interest in majority of the songs.

Ahh, the early Beatles. So "innocent" and young. These first couple albums are not as interesting to me as there are a lot of covers and repeated themes like - You're my girl now so stop talking to other boys; Dancing is fun; I'm in love with you and I wrote a song about it; etc. They are interesting showing the type of songs that they got their chops playing and influenced their original songs. The best thing about all Beatles albums, to me, is that they each capture a moment in the life of the band, and one can easily see how the group evolved and got better and better with each album.

Tried to listen to this with Beatles bias removed and was still supremely impressed. Crazy to think this was released the year my dad was born (not sure why that seems so unbelievable, maybe because elements of the songs sound so contemporary even today). Another example of how it's easy to see why they were such a big deal and how they've had such a lasting impact on the culture. Solidified my strong preference for Paul's writing over John's although I assume a lot of it was collaborative - Paul's voice is way nicer. Till there was you absolutely blew me away - I haven't been that affected by a song in a long time and have listened to it at least 6 times since yesterday. What an incredibly beautiful tune. In other parts of the album there is a certain lyrical sop factor (and at times creep factor *cough* John *cough* Little Child) common to the time/genre that is unfortunate but they at least have an edge over their contemporaries in the ad lib screaming and hooting in some of the songs - it does well to set them out from the pack. These boys were always destined for greatness.

Love Love Love! One of my favorite Beatle songs is on the album. It's a Buddy Holly cover, Words of Love. Anything they sang had a touch of magic.
A strong entry from the Fab Four but not their brightest moments. This one has a couple of memorable songs but lacks a truly iconic one in the bunch.

When I saw this was their 2nd album I expected more of their sophomoric writing but was really surprised at how many well written songs this actually had.

The Beatles will always be a bop for me and full of nostalgia, as I grew up listening to them due to my dad's love of the Beatles. I was only familiar with about half of these -- it was an enjoyable, succinct album!
I really enjoyed this one. I'll be the first to say I think the Beatles can be overrated but this was a fun listen.
The best way to describe this album is that it’s “nice”. Tame, non-offensive, but nothing that blows me away.
I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles "sound". That said... this album had some GOOD SONGS. All My Loving is classic, I LOVE the song "Till There Was You". Roll Over Beethoven is a good example of a toe tapping classic, but definitely dated.

An album like this one makes you realize how good the Beatles later became. This album is good but it's hard to get too excited. All My Loving might be my favourite original song on the album. I know, it's a Paul song, but I said it "might be" my favourite. Actually, John's Little Child is the best original tune. It's cool having John sing lead and background vocals and play harmonica all at the same time. How does he do it? lol The harmonica might be the highlight as it continues through the verses and chorus - all the way nonstop from beginning to end. There are many interesting covers. I never knew George sang Roll Over Beethoven. What a great cover. The cover of Money is considered a John Lennon classic due to his howling lyrics. Interestingly, this cover is done almost exactly like Barrett Strong's original. The cover of Till There Was You is the exact opposite as John's sad George's duelling classical guitars make it night and day different from the original. Nice LP. I'm rounding up.
I like some of the Beatles non-hits, usually about guys telling their girlfriends how devoted they are. Aside from Money, I'm not so crazy about the covers, Til There was You is interesting because it presents McCartney's voice in a different, throw-back crooner light. Postman was a mistake. The album is interesting because it highlights the big changes they made a couple of years later with Rubber Soul.
This is a solid follow-up only 8 months after their audacious debut album. You can see that they've been working on their song writing skills even though only 8 out of the 14 songs are originals. But these originals are pretty damned good, Although Beatle-mania had started, I don't think anyone had any inkling of the mega-ton atomic explosion that was coming from their subsequent albums and how they would shape music history in a few years.
I find ones like this hard to rank given the age. If this was the only record the Beatles did would it be on here? I don’t know.

Not the worst beatles, clearly made before their best
The Beatles. Nearly a decade of great songs. One of my favorite bands ever. Yet sometimes, some questions linger in my mind as I revisit their music. Have they ever made a bad song? What about a bad album? Why does a song like "Little Child" exist, in a discography of a band like The Beatles? What's is about "With the Beatles" that it felt bland at some point? Why "With the Beatles" and not the arguably better "Please Please Me"? But whatever the answer to these questions are, it's always easy to get lost along their music. And even in their early works, there's several gems to enjoy, despite their cheapness. Overall, this album is like a bubblegum. Sweet, but gets bland pretty quickly.
With a back catalogue like theirs I'm surprised this one makes the top 1001, this to me is The Beatles.....before they actually became The Beatles. this is pretty run of the mill stuff compared to their later work
The Beatles' second album. 14 consistent, catchy and jangly rock'n'roll songs from the Mop top / 'Beatlemania' era, without any singles to take the focus. Nothing to push any musical boundaries, but a pleasant and enjoyable listen. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: All My Loving Date listened: 03/06/22

Lennon and McCartney only 21-22 years old (Harrison even younger!) when they recorded this - amazing really. The covers are mostly impressive (some a bit too m.o.r., but reflective of the music scene at the time), but the originals shine. Unbelievable talent at such young ages. I think theyre taken for granted these days - some people forget what they brought to music some 60 years ago. Bravo.

Short album coming in at 33 minutes, that early Beatles sound with different tracks coming through left and right channels in early use of Stereo. All My Loving is my most popular song, though Money (That’s What I Want) is a great closer.

Classic early Beatles (2nd album)
I don't remember if I've listened to The Beatles album as a whole before now. There are several tracks that I know I've heard several times before. I enjoyed hearing the early connections to Rock and Roll, before the Beatles really began to expand the genre as they did later in their career. The covers of songs by other musicians are firmly tied to the originals, but they sound like early Beatles tunes. "All My Loving" and "Roll Over Beethoven" were my favorite tracks from this listen. I like that they covered Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me" too. The Beatles trips up on the general problem I have with this era's approach to love songs. "Little Child" feels creepy as the lyrics seek romance from... a little child. "Hold Me Tight" is another track I'd be tempted to skip. In general, this album is an album of love songs, which helps to keep this album at 3 stars for me. The music is energetic, and the harmonies are fun. I enjoyed listening to the album, but once might be enough for the album as a whole.
Well well… moments of brilliance by the Beatles but a reminder that they are human and not demigods. Side A is strong, Side B falters a little bit but this serves as good contrast to shine a light on how brilliant this band became later on.
Never a bad album by the Beatles. This is more their pop boy band style than when they transitioned into rock legends. A good album with some decent covers. This album has a long track list but is only 36 mins. Overall this may be my least favorite Beatles album, but still great. 8.1/10

I grew up obsessed with The Beatles. In fact, I never really listened to any other music until I was probably 14 or 15. I was never that into their earlier music - for me it was Rubber Soul and everything that came after. I do appreciate their earlier music though, and it's nice to revisit. The raw energy and amazing harmonies are what stand out for me. Interesting that Paul only has lead vocals on three songs. Good stuff, but much better was yet to come. 4 stars.

Best Song: All My Loving. I actually prefer several covers of this song, but the original still holds its own. Worst Song: Roll Over Beethoven. Only because I can imagine the live shows in which the crowd, determined to match the energy of the studio recording, clap their hands bloody and raw for the entire goddamn song. Overall: If this album is here, should I just assume that all Beatles albums are on this list? Surely one day all this phony Beatlemania will have bitten the dust, right? One thing that struck me while listening to this album was the way nearly every track immediately wriggles its way into your brain and sticks there like some not-entirely-pleasant drug. But then, for as fast as the dopamine hit of each song comes on, it peels off even faster and by the end of each (already short) song, you're grateful that it's finally gone. Paired with these inane, cheeky-cheesy lyrics, you're stuck with this album that feels so sugar-coated it should come with its own insulin shot.

It's just such good fun! The covers are great fun, the originals are great. This is the album you'd present as evidence that Ringo being a crap drummer is an idiots opinion. The looseness he plays with is what makes this head and shoulders above most other acts in 1963. It makes the songs Rae and fun, and funkier than most acts at the time could manage.

This won't be a popular opinion, but I don't rate The Beatles. The Stones were way better, as were The Kinks, as were The Small Faces. I say no to bland pop.

Hah, this was easy: stone cold classic that was a joy to go back and revisit, it’s been awhile since I listened to it straight through. And I like everything except “Little Child” and possibly “Devil in Her Hear”.
I could just say "it's the Beatles" and give it a five, but I don't think that would do service to this album because it isn't the most well known Beatles album, and indeed it doesn't have... well, any of the songs that they're traditionally known for. But the thing is, every song stands tall on this album. They're not hits, but they're not mediocre either. They put the work in on the songs they wrote for this album, and chose the others that they covered well. It's a fantastic rock album of mostly love songs, and only the Beatles could make it as engaging as it is.
Really good, older Beatles album. I am not a fan of most of the cover songs (except for Till There was You) but overall the album is quite excellent. Standouts: All My Loving, It Won't Be Long, Till There Was You. Others: Don't Bother Me, Little Child, All I've Got to Do, Devil in Her Heart, Not a Second Time, and Hold Me Tight. Die frühen Beatles halt…
Quite a time warp. This album was recorded in mid-1963 and released in November of the same year. The band had not yet visited the U.S., the album hit the stores and radio in the same month JFK was assassinated, and the band members were still so very young. It's very difficult for me to extract the history, culture, and context of the band and the bigger picture from the album, and I don't really want to. It's still all before I was born, but it was all such a part of my early youth that it feels quite familiar. Listening to the album, which I haven't heard in so many years but for a few songs here and there, I still find their songwriting talent to be remarkable. Love the performances on the album, too. I hear such great influences on their music -- 50s pop, rockabilly, early rock 'n roll, a teensy bit of jazz swing, hints of very early surf rock, doo-wop, blues, and so on -- yet even as far back as this very early album they still sound very much like The Beatles. Overall, I really enjoy the album. It's fun, it's not overcomplicated, catchy, and I'm glad to have listened to it again.

Of all The Beatles' albums, this one is my least favourite. Even just looking across their early work, "With the Beatles" doesn't have the raw, "recorded-in-12-hours" power of "Please Please Me". It doesn't have the tidal wave of all-original material like "A Hard Day's Night", and it doesn't have the developing maturity of "Beatles for Sale." But it's still four stars. That's how much of a fan-boy I am. Released just a few months after their debut as Beatlemania was rising towards fever-pitch, the Beatles were still a perfectly honed machine in live performance. That energy comes across here through the band's spirited renditions, however much the actual material might sag. The covers are best not compared to the originals and instead appreciated for what the Beatles bring to them. I still get a buzz from their harmonies in "Please Mister Postman" and "You Really Got a Hold on Me", McCartney's effortlessly earnest take on "'Till There Was You" and Lennon almost reaching a "Twist and Shout" level scream-along with "Money". The originals are probably the patchiest territory: "All I've Got to Do", "Little Child" and "Not a Second Time" rank among the most forgettable in the band's catalogue. George Harrison skulks moodily through his first self-penned song "Don't Bother Me" and forgets to add a melody. But it's all okay, because "It Won't Be Long" and "All My Loving" are utterly compelling and relentlessly exciting. Why the book didn't have the band's debut "Please Please Me" instead of this, I'll never quite understand. But it's still a hell of a good ride.
I'm surprised that it's taking us this long to get to the Beatles. But I guess that's the way the randomizer... randomizes. When I was younger, I did not care much for early Beatles. Somewhere around Revolver I was a fan. That changed later, understanding how their sound was groundbreaking. It's hard to believe how much their sound did evolve, though. But this is their starting point, really. And I've come to appreciate these songs. Still... the songs themselves are simplistic in comparison to their later work. I can't give this a 5 because of that. Still... you can't go wrong with the Beatles.
It's a very good album but I don't know if it's great. I do not dispute that the Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time, but they got even better over time. This album doesn't have the same lyrical or musical depth as later releases. A lot of bubblegum and maybe a few too many remakes. I didn't love Til There Was You and sorry George but Chuck's original guitar intro and solo on Roll Over Beethoven kick your ass. They're all good homages but none really dominate the original. Although I do love John's wailing on Money - ups Barrett Strong's vocal energy just a bit. I also enjoyed their harmonies, especially on some of the originals - Little Child was too one-sided but It Won't Be Long, All My Loving, and Hold Me Tight were great. There's nothing to dislike about this album but it is not monumental (other than their timing and popularity) like other albums.
With their second album you can already hear the Beatles developing into the great band that they'll become. The harmonies are killer even if the songs are quite simple. Apart from the harmonies Paul's bass playing on here is the highlight for me with the walking bass on "All My Loving" being a standout. Their arrangements of the six cover songs are quite good too, especially "Money." They aren't quite there yet though but you can tell it's coming.
It's funny how these days a "cover band" would be seen as less talented than a "real band." But, there was a time when covers were the standard. No one expected all singers to also be songwriters. This album is a good example of the transition.
Expected to give this a 2 to balance all the stars I’ll be dishing out to the later Beatles albums, but it started so strongly. Listening to the energy of It Won’t Be Long gives me a taste of what Beatlemania must’ve been like for a 60s schoolgirl. The Beatles did this kind of music better than most of their contemporaries, I reckon. Buuut there are a few duds (Little Child…) and the covers don’t add anything for me. 2.5 / 3
it's crazy how ahead of the time this band was, releasing in 1977. This album sounds like some of early 2000's Alt Rock. They really made a statement releasing music so ahead of the time.
I found most of the songs on this album pretty forgettable, but "Please Mr. Postman" and "You Really Got a Hold On Me" are standouts. It is noteworthy that both of these songs were covers. On "With The Beatles", the group has yet to hit their songwriting stride. 3.5/5 stars

What can I say about The Beatles that hasn't already been said. Super groovy album, vocals on full display with surf-style rock 'n roll instrumentals underneath. The vocal doubling is done so perfectly on select tracks throughout, and the harmonies are very enjoyable. This album truly marks the start of a new era for pop music. Probably one of the weakest offerings by the Beatles, and yet it still showcases what an awesome musical force they were. Later albums are often the main focus of the Beatles catalogue, and yet I think there's still some really good stuff to get out of the earlier albums. The songs, while simple, are extremely tight and really catchy. The covers are also all very well arranged. George Martin's honorific of "The Fifth Beatle" is certainly well deserved. These guys knew how to do pop music. I did listen to the remastered 2009 version, so it would be interesting to compare to others. I've heard mono is the way to go, but never really tried it out. *EDIT* I tried it, mono is waaay better. This is for me a really solid 4, and only misses out on 5 because I know how much better they can get. Besides the obvious hits from this album, I also enjoyed All I've Got To Do, Till There Was You and Devil In Her Heart.

A well put together album that sounds very much of it's time. Thankfully the Beatles progressed and drove music forward from the early pop/rock sound.
Listenable to the end. It's a solid album. What I wasn't aware of was that so many of these are covers. Did that diminish the stars of others to have the Beatles putting it forth? It's interesting to dive in on that history.

This was my first time playing this album. It's been years since I'd heard some of these songs and yet I still knew the words.
I understand why this album is on the list; it is a great artifact of the Beatles going into Beatlemania. Recorded with a little more time and polish than Please Please Me, but retains a strong connection to the Hamburg Beatles (especially int he covers and Astrid Kirschner influenced cover). This was the UK's second ever million selling LP (after the South Pacific soundtrack). Massively popular and influential. But is it really that great to listen to now? I own this record, but I don't think I ever pulled it off the shelf in preference to other Beatles records. This deserves to be on the 1001 list, but not even nearly my favorite Beatles album. But it's the Beatles, you know?

To be fair, I absentmindedly add "Boring" between The and Beatles from this period. 14 song lyrics which could be generated by the formula "I'm so happy when I'm with you, I'm so sad when you're away, please let me worship your body and soul, please pretty please". Nonetheless, it would be thoughtless to say it's a mediocre album and had minor impact on the music history. There's a huge amount of talent involved and it's hard for me to pick the best track from "With The Beatles". A I-know-most-of-the-tracks-already-because-all-radio-stations-can't-get-enough-of-the-Beatles album. No-brainer.
Pierwszy album, na temat którego nie wyrobiłem sobie opinii - tym dziwniejsze, że wylosował się na weekend, więc miałem go okazję przesłuchać jakieś 6 razy. Na plus na pewno harmonika w głosach chłopaków, idealnie do siebie pasują. Słychać już w tym albumie definiujące Beatlesów w przyszłości brzmienia i mocno zaznaczyli swój styl. A jednak płyta przeleciała w tle kilka razy bez zwrócenia na siebie jakiejkolwiek uwagi, do tego stopnia, że postanowiłem przesłuchać każdy z utworów z osobna i tak na uwagę zasługują 2 utwory - klasyczne "All my Loving" i świetny cover R&B "Roll Over Beethoven". Niestety, cały album jest praktycznie w połowie coverami, a oryginalne utwory brzmią bardzo podobnie i na jedno kopyto, przez co ciężko utożsamić je chociaż ze swoim tytułem. Niby klasyk, wpływowy album, rozum podpowiada, że powinien być oceniony wysoko. A tak, to na bezrybiu i rak ryba - w 1963 na pewno robiło wrażenie, w 2022 już niekoniecznie. No spodziewałem się więcej, nie ukrywam.
Beatelsi zawsze spoko, nie jest to co prawda ich najlepszy album, a i mix stereo może być lekko denerwujący.
Nie słuchało się źle, ale nic mi nie zapadło w pamięć po nawet kilku przesłuchaniach. Muzyka jest wesoła, lekka, liryka raczej nieskomplikowana, imo zahacza o banał miejscami, co niby współgra z radosnym brzmieniem całości, ale nadal trochę tu moim zdaniem jest za mało. Ogólnie powiedziałbym, że jest to album dość przeciętny jak na Beatlesów, ale zdecydowanie się da tego słuchać w tle, ale chyba tylko w tle. Myślę, że 2.5-3/5 byłoby słuszną oceną, ale jeśli to konkurs najlepszych albumów wszechczasów, to raczej taka przeciętność nie powinna się pojawiać. No i na pewno pojawią się jeszcze inne, lepsze i bardziej \"rewolucyjne\" albumy.
Nudy na pudy. Mało co aż mogę powiedzieć. Tak se przeleciało. Beatlesów naprawdę lubię, ale płytka ma stałe brzmienie, niestety mało pasjonujące. Lirycznie to też nie powala w wielu przypadkach. Co innego odsłuchać tej płyty w roku wydania, co innego teraz. Dałbym 2.5, ale w obliczu kilku dużo lepszych albumów Beatlesów, jakimi nas zarzuci challenge, leci 2.

One of The Beatles's best

You can see the beginnings of a Beatles sound in this album, the Lennon McCartney songwriting and harmonies and the distinctive Mersey beat. Not one of the best albums but still one that’s worthy of a listen to every once in a while, for that I’ll give it a four

Early Beatles' albums have too many covers. Do they make the album better or worse? I prefer the true Beatles songs. There are some good ones. This is one of my least favorite Beatles albums. That being said it is still very good. 4/5

I've never listened to the really early Beatles apart from a few singles, so I was happy to learn that this album was very enjoyable. It's a bit cheesy, some of the lyrics are laughable when compared to their later work, but it's extremely catchy and easy to listen to (a gigantic contributing factor to their success). There's also a lot of covers on this album and they're all very nice. "Roll Over Beethoven" is probably my favorite track on the album despite not being much of a Chuck Berry fan.
Even as a diehard Beatles fan, I question this album's presence on the list. It's totally fine, decent pop covers, but nowhere near as influential impressive, or enjoyable as the albums that came before or after it. Not bad, but not great.

I generally really like The Beatles, especially their later, experimental albums. With The Beatles being only studio album no. 2, this has nothing similar to their later work, but is dominated by their earlier Rock 'n' Roll (and at times Pop) material. The songs really are a mixed bag here. We can find strong numbers like It Won't Be Long and the early classic All My Loving. But the album also contains the very, VERY schmaltzy Till There Was You, one of quite a few cover versions that have, uncharacteristically for the band, found their way onto this collection. Much better here is their rendition of the Marvelettes' Please Mister Postman. All in all, this album contains a few bad, some mediocre, and a couple of really good songs; the latter of which were an early indication of the creative heights the Beatles would reach eventually. Still, this one is 3.5/5.
Listening to this album is like eating pasta before you cook it. Some weird people enjoy it, almost too much, but the rest of us are more interested in the finished product. There are some catchy songs here, but nothing classic. Plenty of great harmonies and musical moments, but it fails to coalesce in the way most great albums do. It just feels a bit rushed and as if it's trying to manufacture success based off of their previous sales.
Lots of cool moments on the album foreshadowing bigger things to come. Found myself digging the guitar work multiple times.
I did enjoy this older recording when that generally is not the case with the Beatles. The older the worse for me generally but I thought they picked some very interesting covers and I liked the way they set up the album.
3.4 - solid soulful Beatles tunes, with some early classics - “You Really Hot a Hold on Me” is my favorite of the bunch.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tends to be remembered mostly for concepts and isolated jokes (towels, the Infinite Improbability Drive, Paranoid Android etc), but some of Douglas Adams' observations of behaviour have stayed with me. One of these is a moment shortly after the Earth is demolished. Arthur Dent, having narrowly escaped, is trying to get his head around it. He thinks of his parents and his sister, that he'll never see them again. He doesn't react; it's just too big. He thinks about the person he stood behind in the supermarket queue a few days before. The whole supermarket has gone, and everyone in it. He panics. He tries to start small again and build up, but when it hits him that there's no longer such a thing as a McDonald's burger, he passes out. Talking about The Beatles can be too much to take in; I think that's one of the reasons us fans can be such anoraks. Peter Jackson's Get Back was fantastic because it indulges that impulse to collect minute details, but also because it makes The Beatles smaller, by dropping us right in there at a moment when they were still four friends writing songs, making each other laugh, with a future together still available. This is my way of making them small: talking around the subject to remind myself that this was an album made quickly by a group of bright young men, "a good little rock 'n' roll band," as McCartney puts it. They were still excited just to be doing it. George gets his first songwriting credit here, and maybe it's telling that it's the first song of unmasked, unguarded personal discontent. A sign of things to come. Or maybe it was just a miserable day on a long tour and he felt a bit under the weather in a hotel in Bournemouth. I'm getting ahead of things. They hadn't even been to America yet. So we focus on the details: the verses of All I've Got To Do, and the precise, unique timbre of Ringo's cymbal smacks. Better writers than me can and have talked about their place in the lineage of vocal girl groups, the pros and cons of their covers versus the originals etc etc. The vastness, richness and importance of their story don't persuade me they're a great band; the music does that. But they do help to remind me how miraculous the act of making songs is, and make me want to read, write and discuss other artists with the same close attention. This is the album of theirs I heard last, and not the one I have the greatest personal connection with, but it's absolutely thrilling stuff.
You can tell they were young here, as their songwriting is exceptionally kiddish and musical performance amateurish. There is very little interesting about this album outside of it being a historical curiosity. While a short album, it's still bloated with covers that are inferior to their originals, and the originals are fairly tepid pop songs about young love.
Not a Beatles album again !

Easy to see why they were such a hit: a set of punchy pop tunes that wouldn't upset your mum too much. I think I prefer this to their more experimental work.

There are some great songs here and of course those beautiful harmonies but overall this is the least interesting Beatles album I've heard. Too many indistinct covers. Still it's the Beatles. 4.5 🌟
