This was nice to listen to but nothing really stood out as amazing to me. Wouldn't turn it off but wouldn't seek it out.

I like some of the funkiness but so far not the best Stevie Wonder has to offer. You haven't done nothing is pretty good though. They won't go when I go also kind of rules.

17th album. How...just where and how does he come up with all of this music? There's some substance to the lyrics here beyond the just soulful sound you expect from Wonder. Songs about being better people and knowing each other. Pretty good stuff!

Not really for me, this one!

The music was good, but not necessarily my thing. It was a more somber record and wasn't necessarily what I would want to listen to very often.

Stevie Wonder had a string of albums that delicately balanced cheese with badassery before descending entirely into cheese. This was the end of the streak, and you're starting to see the tightrope walker wobble. There was still some decent soul, but the funk bangers were a thing of the past at this point.

Nothing really stands out here, but it sounded nice enough. Probably wouldn't listen again, but I definitely didn't have to grit my teeth as it played. 3/5.

The stand-out track is "You Haven't Done Nothin'", but the rest of the album isn't quite as classic as other Stevie Wonder works. It feels like Stevie in his imperial phase, but perhaps phoning it in in places.

Disappointing, there's better SW albums

I've got this on vinyl and I listen to it whenever I want to feel thoroughly disappointed. It's OK, but pales in comparison to "The Best Of ... "

I've been digging the Stevie Wonder albums on the 1001. This one isn't my favourite, but still enjoyed it.

Preferred Innervisions, had more standout tracks. Love Stevie Wonder but this is harder to get into and feels a little repetitive at times.

Listen, I know it's good and all but it doesn't do much for me. Only track I really liked personally was "You Haven't Done Nothing" due to the synth(?) sound and energy, if anything it sounds like Superstition to me which came out 2 years before this album. The rest is a bit too earnest in its moodiness.

Not his best but very solid

A lot more refined and mellowed out than I expected. I think I am more familiar with his upbeat radio hits. An unexpected treat. But there is one thing.... Wonder? Rings a bell for some reason... wonder.... Strange.

So many of his songs held hope for a better humanity....

It took until the very last song to get the harmonica out? I really didn't like this album. Too much slow, not enough funk. "Please Don't Go" and "Boogie On Reggae Woman" were the only songs that stood out from the rest. Disappointing.

I did enjoy most of it. It's a very adequate album and doesn't stand out but isn't forgettable. It's easily one of the most medium albums I've ever heard. It has great instrument variety, very accessible music, and inoffensive lyrics without any deeper meaning than "Life is good, and I love the people around me". The most 5/10 I've ever heard which is the rating it's going to receive.

I don't really get the hype, but at least this is a rather compact album compared to e. g. Songs in the key of life. Don't like his religious stuff at all, the rest is okayish, but doesn't catch my interest

Stevie Wonder always delivers. I wouldn't say it's my favorite thing in the world, but it's always a pleasant listen as an album.

Maybe this review reflects that I only listened to this one in car quietly over three or four parts. I do recall really enjoying the album Inversions so I was hoping this would be similar.

This album sounds like the music I had to listen to when I worked at Mervyn's folding the same table of shirts for the 10th time that day.

Was expecting more upbeat music. This was a lot of slow songs that seemed a little depressing to me. The one upbeat song sounded like an early take on Superstition at first. Not very impressed with this one.

Sprung into life from its passive gospelly plod when ‘You haven’t done nothin’ arrived, and finished on the best track on here ‘Please don’t go’. Ironically I was more than happy to go. I’d had enough.

Even if you don't like Stevie Wonder, you have to admire his talent as a musician and songwriter. It took me a couple of songs to feel the vibe and before I knew it, I was swaying my head from side to side with my eyes shut. But not for long. The wife elbowed me and said 'keep your eyes on the road please'. The spell was broken.... then the reggae song came on and that was it, the moment gone, totally ruined. He pulled it back briefly with one of his classic stopper grooves, but it was too little too late.

Soul, 1974 -> 2

I enjoyed the vocals and listening to a legend, but overall not my favorite album. Had good moments, but lulled me a bit sometimes.

It’s kind of hard to fathom that Stevie wonder had made 17 albums by 1974, but that is indeed the case. I have long held that no artist has more than 2-4 albums worth of good material, and this is no exception, but that’s not to say this isn’t listenable; it’s just not something I want to hear over and over. Stevie is in his most easy listening mode- stuff you’d hear at the grocery store or department store- inoffensive, not very attention grabbing, but fills time. You Haven’t Done Nothin is the closest he comes to getting groovy, “Superstition” style, but is maybe half of what that song is. ⭐️⭐️.5

I don't get the cultural adoration for Stevie Wonder. I do have to wonder (sorry) if I'm missing something. Do people really think this is one of the greatest albums ever? Sure Stevie was talented but it's all just so... bland?

Sure, he's a genius musician and songwriter, but what makes this, his 17th studio album, so necessary to be heard? I couldn't say after listening to it.

I recognise the album cover, but I've never heard this record before - in fact, I don't think I've heard any of the songs on it before. Which is a bit weird. For the most part, it's a nice enough record - very laid back, very relaxed - it just sort of innocently and harmlessly pootles along. It starts, it ambles, then it ends. Which is... nice. If you like that sort of thing. Stevie Wonder is at his best when the melodies make your tummy go funny, but there's none of that going on here. By the end of it, I still felt like I'd never heard it.

This is my introduction to Stevie Wonder. I found it a little bit boring tbh, probably because I haven't really been listening to soul.

Didn’t dig the last Stevie Winder album that popped up. Tried to leave expectations at the door when listening to this one. First half is just boring easy listening music. I know how talented he is, but this is just so uninspiring. Then “You Haven’t Done Nothing” starts and the funk vibe and cool bass got me bobbing my head a bit. But then back to elevator music. Sorry Stevie.

It was just okay to me, again not my genre. I had a distracted listen so I should listen through again sometime.

I was really disappointed by this album. I listened to “Songs in the Key of Life” a couple of weeks ago and it quickly became one of my favorite albums. This album has a couple of good songs, but most of it is easy listening music that you hear playing at the grocery store. Not for me.

A bit "nicer" than some of the other early 70s albums, i.e. duller.

7/10 It would sound great on a record

I’m not a huge Stevie fan and I’m unfamiliar with most of his catalog except Innervisions which was on this list, but I associate the sound of this album with his later work. The difference in these two records in both quality and style is so great that if his voice wasn’t familiar I would have attributed it to someone else entirely. While Innervisions epitomized funk jazz soul, very little of that is in evidence here. FFF is more a gospelized pop album of the sort that would eventually give us I Just Called To Say I Love You and other tripe. His approach to his instrument even seems to be different. In that album he approached the keys as the cornerstone to the song and managed to play a funky bass line, rhythm chords, and melody lines all at once in a flurry of notes. Accordingly it required less accompaniment since it cover so much ground. In this album, the keys are primarily used to play very simple chord based lines that need more added to the production to fill out the space. He’s like a keyboard player for a lounge singer here. All around a less successful outing than Innervisions and pretty disappointing.

Just two stars for this one. Stevie has a great voice and some great hits, but not on this album. I felt this album was lacking. A product of its’ time and not particularly memorable.

I quite enjoyed the last Stevie Wonder album that came up, even if I did feel it was quite twee in places. So don’t mind diving into another of his. This one was ok, but no where near as strong as “Songs in the Key of Life”. Sort of flew by as background music without anything standing out crying for attention.

Lovely to listen to while walking! I didn’t like any of the songs on this one as much as the other songs of his that I’m familiar with, but I liked it overall and found it engaging. His voice is so amazing and feels so good to hear, it’s very easy listening. I have no connection to religion but hearing someone like Stevie Wonder sing about it is very moving.

It's so fucking wrong, dude. I was having the time of my life with my Hiby DAP yesterday when the thing went and broke down on me today. I'm not entirely sure why, but it won't charge. I remember changing the USB settings to a file transfer mode yesterday, which could be the reason as to why it isn't charging. I'm gonna be so pissed off if that turns out to be the case. Anyways, enough blogging on the thousandty-eighty-nine albums website. It hasn't been long since my last Stevie Wonder album - just 11 albums since I listened to Songs in the Key of Life. That album was bad news, truth be told. An hour-forty is just way, way too fucking long for an album. "Isn't She Lovely" was a good cut alongside a handful of other decent tracks, though the album made me reluctant to engage with this site for a few days. Maybe the third Wonder album will be the one to win me over. Yeah. It's more Stevie Wonder, alright. This was okay. I could get down with the lively, funky sound on the first four or so tracks, but this album kind of goes out to lunch for the remainder of it's runtime. I cared little for the more subdued tracks, and the energetic ones felt like they were treading the same ground. Wonder is a talented and charismatic vocalist, but he kind of writes his songs in a way where the vocal segments are near-identical to one another. If I were a bigger fan of this style I wouldn't have any complaints, but as a more mellow-tempered listener I find that his style has a limit to how long it can hold my attention. The instrumentals are decent. I admire the variety and experimentation with different genres/instruments, though I once again find that soul has a limited appeal in the long run. Book time. Most successful release from his classic quartet of albums. Stevie was going bonkers during the recording of this album. I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but four list albums seems like the perfect number for an artist of Stevie's standing. I cosign this inclusion.

The songs are smooth and easy to listen to, but nothing really appealed to me. There are no songs that I would want to relisten to.

I think Stevie Wonder is a hit-maker artist, and this album didn't have any hits. So it didn't really do it for me, despite the greatness of the artist.

A couple of funky bangers (Boogie on Reggae Woman, You Havent Done Nothin) however too many elevator muzak fillers to elevate this beyond a solid 2 star.

I don’t know what it is but Stevie Wonder just doesn’t quite land with me. He has some absolutely great songs but I guess I prefer him when he’s doing funk rather than slower tracks. I’m less familiar with the songs on this album, it’s certainly not as good as Innervisions, which sounded far more essential to my ears; I’m yet to listen to Talking Book or Songs in the Key of Life, which are perhaps the last chance to win me over. In all likelihood I might have to be someone who enjoys the hits. Songs like Too Shy to Say just made this quite dull.

Another Stevie and I Wonder why so many on the list. I just don't have the ear for his work. I don't see the draw. This album was more of the same from the the wonder boy with cheesy motown sound. It got better at the end with the creepy track "They Won't Let Me Go" and the 2 finishers. Not buying it...1.69 stars.

Stevie Wonder is a musical genius and virtuoso. But I don’t think this is one of his better albums.

I feel like there is a big disadvantage for the albums that are fresh to the ear, that have never been heard by the listener before. Stevie Wonder is a legend, but to me he sounds like a vocal that any boy bend has and honestly this album didn’t do justice. It’s fine melodically, it’s not the worst thing to listen to, but it hasn’t evoked anything in my soul and I think that’s what it comes to at the end of the day, not just in music but in life. :)

Stevie Wonder is maybe on the Mount Rushmore of modern musicians. Miles Davis, Lennon/McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Herbie Hancock, Brian Wilson...whomever else you want to put on there, he is a GIANT. In other words, you don't have to ask me twice to listen to a Stevie Wonder album. This one contains the seminal track, Boogie On Reggae Woman...one of the most covered, most interesting songs from this era, imo. Talk amongst yourselves - I'll give you a topic: Boogie On Reggae Woman is neither Boogie or Reggae...Discuss! It is a favorite of organ trios and jazz covers of all time. The chord changes and the vibe Stevie creates with this anomaly of a song are incredible. I'm not smart enough to explain why this song is so great, other than - it just is. You Haven't Done Nothin' is another clav-heavy, horn backed funky jam that you should be familiar with. The rest is a variety of heart-felt Stevie jams.

I like Stevie Wonder but didn’t really like this

I actually really liked a couple songs on this album. However, I found most of it really slow and tiresome. Also, maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I don't really like the constant vocal embellishments that Stevie Wonder uses.

I realise that Stevie Wonder is hugely important to black music and I can understand that to some extent. But his songs rarely grab me. Only with Creepin' did he reach me. There are too many mellow songs on the album for me. Ok, it's soul...but that's exactly what he doesn't find with me. At least on this album

I just don’t get Stevie Wonder.

This feels like a Stevie deep cut album, not a lot I’m familiar with though I’m not a huge Stevie Wonder fan. This sounds similar to his other work that I am familiar with.

They Won't Go When I Go is one of the best songs I have ever heard, but I didn't like the rest of the album.

It feels like just a week ago I was writing “gee, I feel so bad for not liking Stevie Wonder.” I don’t feel as bad this time, but the songs I didn’t like I REALLY didn’t like. Some were pretty decent though!

the amount of times i’ve tried to get through this album and i simply don’t enjoy it at all… there’s nothing that makes me want to keep listening, my brain don’t find it interesting and it feels like such a chore. i will say that two songs were very nice; “you haven’t done nothin’” and “they won’t go when i go” i don’t want to give a 2 but it’s more a high 2, i’m just done at this point and i’m raging 😆 there’s other stevie wonder albums i’ve enjoyed much much more.

I realise that I mostly like the popular songs of Stevie's. I obviously appreciate the quality of the songs, and I can see how many can love them. My feelings from the album were pretty meh.

I was excited when I got a Stevie Wonder album, but I ended up a bit disappointed. The music definitely has a little bit of beauty to it, but just seemed very boring to me lyrically. Nothing that I wanted to listen to again.

Its ok

Cheesy Stevie. I understand this album/ Stevie Wonder stands on a high pedestal in some people’s hearts on here. But, I’m not a spring chicken and I can’t tell you unflinchingly that this is dated, and dated in a bad way. I get SW’s influence on music, but I’m never Jonesing to listen to SW. I can never see an instance where I’d naturally throw on a SW record. And, if I did feel the urge, it wouldn’t be this one.

Nice mellow start. Interesting notes that are slightly unexpected. Not really a style that makes me pay attention to the lyrics Lost interest. It has a couple nice songs but it's not drawing me back to listen more

It is good music, well constructed and performed, but I just can't vibe with it on an emotional level. It just doesn't move me other than a couple songs here and there.

Not my favourite of Stevie’s work. Not sure what my favourite song is but don’t think this is a grower either.

I have never consciously listened to this album before and now I know why, it is totally boring. Sure it belongs to his "classic period" but it is definitely the weakest. I have all the albums around it, but I don't have this one. Two stars are enough, I really don't know how you can give it 5 stars. How many do the others deserve then, 'fifteen' (15)?

Dull

Stevie continues to be the best artist, musician, songwriter I know of, that I just don’t know how to get into. The front half of this album just was not for me, back house picked up a lot in my theme and style preference. More funk, a little darker at times. But Stevie Wonder does more experimental and creative stuff in pop music during this time than anyone. Wish I liked it more.

Nothing but respect for Stevie but most of the albums generated for me thus far have been rather slow paced and this is yet another one. At least the instrumentals are interesting in this one and there's a bigger variety between songs. Not really good for a rainy lazy day like today though, I need something more energetic. 2/5

It's nice how this project teaches me a lot about the finer workings of my musical preferences. For instance, how low my Soul tolerance actually is. Yes, Stevie Wonder is an amazing artist you should absolutely have heard before you die. But all his 4 albums from "Talking Book" to "Songs in the Key of Life", indiscriminately thrown in here? They all needed to take spots in this list? This one? Fuck no.

Somehow I resisted the temptation to skip songs but not sure how. Stevie Wonder does have some funky songs to get your toes tapping. None were on this album. Not saying these songs were terrible, I just found most of them a bit boring.

This is pretty poor. The songs with the funk are so much better than the slow ones. I assume his other albums are better than this! No Wonder

The first Stevie Wonder Russian Roulette fail of this list (3rd album we’ve had). Worst one we’ve had so far. Dull no funk songs prevailed making it not a great listen at all. It’s not a patch on ‘Songs in the key of life’ which followed this. So he came to his senses it would appear.

Steve's starting to sound like a sex pest. I can imagine this being very popular in the swinging 70s but his warbling is starting to grate. No stand out tunes but a steady grind.

As much as I’d like to be a fan, I think Stevie just isn’t for me.

I think You Haven't Done Nothin' is Stevie Wonder's best song but the rest of the album doesn't interest me at all, so my rating is 2 stars or D+.

Not really feeling this album today. I'm probably going with a 2 so far. There's some tracks that I thought were alright, Bird of Beauty and You Haven't Done Nothin' but most of this album wasn't memorable for me.

Sorry, just not that good. Recording quality is poor and the music is meh.

Kind of confused on this one. An odd arrangement of Stevie Songs. I get lost on the God songs being included here, and the funky soulful ones don’t deliver as big of a punch. Minimal repetitive lyrics don’t add to the draw.

This is #day22 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... how about an album from 50 years ago? I must admit that before today, I only knew Stevie Wonder mostly because of "I Just Called To Say I Love You," which is kind of corny, as I assume his legacy and influence stretch far beyond that song. So, this is another first-timer for me, and my first Stevie Wonder album, too. What can I say? Well, it's kind of fine... But it's not the record I'd want to revisit soon, or ever. I'm not seeking feel-good music either. Besides, something tells me more of his works will be on this list down the road, so... This is a 2 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day23.

The hits are the tolerable part of Stevie Wonder albums. They’re also often the faster, more energetic songs. But those are lacking on “Fulfillingness’ First Finale.” As a result, I was not fulfilled. That doesn’t mean I want a second finale.

Mäßiges Soul Album von Stevie, das durchweg langweilig ist und kaum fesselnde Akzente bietet. Leider bietet es durchweg wenig fesselnde Akzente und bleibt insgesamt langweilig. Die introspektive und persönliche Note, die das Album auszeichnen soll, konnte mich nicht überzeugen. Songs wie “Creepin’” und “They Won’t Go When I Go” ändern auch nichts an diesem Urteil.

Never been much of a fan. Still not.

I’ve enjoyed this classic Stevie Wonder period in general. However, my last.fm tells me I’ve listened to this one before and I have zero recollection. This listening hasn’t changed that. It didn’t leave much of an impression. I feel it should have as I’ve really enjoyed other records from this period, but for some reason it didn’t.

A little slow for me, though gets a bit more groovy towards the end.

It's more Stevie innit. Quite liked the first song, there was one song that was basically Superstition, and the rest of it was the slightly funky soul you would expect. I don't find it irritating but i can't get excited by it.

Recognised more of this then I thought I would. He's got a great voice and it's pretty soothing, just not really my thing. The best tracks were "boogie on reggae woman" and "you ain't done nothing"

Stevie always has great instrumentation. Unfortunately, he has embarrassingly bad lyrics. And his ballads suck. One of the most overrated artists in the canon for me.

A lovely and heartfelt album. One worth listening to with no distractions. Not my favorite though.

I was a little concerned with how this album would be when that first song came on. It sounded like a serious Eddie Murphy singing and that just doesn’t work for me. I was wrong. Good Not that this album works for me. It’s not a return listen album but gosh darn it, Stevie Wonder has quite a few great licks up his sleeve. I love the synthed keyboard or electric piano that he highlights somewhat frequently on his songs. Choice cut: Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away

In de voorgaande twee albums flirtte Stevie al met jazz fusion, wat zich begin jaren 70 als een olievlek over de R&B-wereld verspreidde. Als je bijvoorbeeld een 'Too High' hoort, op de briljante voorganger ''Innervisions'', dan verrast de sound van dit album niet echt. Toch zijn het de vintage Stevie Wonder songs die de plaat met zijn hoofd boven water houden, en voelen de meeste nummers met de progressieve, elektronische instrumenten een beetje flets aan. 'Boogie On Reggae Woman' en 'You Haven't Done Nothin'' brengen de funk energie waar de man wat mij betreft zijn legendarische status aan te danken heeft. Vooral die tweede is een ruwe diamant, het baldadige broertje van 'Superstition'. Een solide protest song tegen niksnut Nixon. Heel anders is 'They Won't Go When I Go', de piano ballad die een mystieke begrafenissfeer bij zich draagt. Interessant nummer. Verder mis ik echt wel veel body, schwung, en de catchy melodieën waar het hierop volgende album ''Songs in the Key of Life'' van overloopt. Het slotnummer hint hier alvast op, die krachtig eindigt. Het is voor mij altijd wel duidelijk wat ik van Stevie Wonder moet vinden. Funky Stevie is een legend. En zijn zoete nummers doen me veel te snel aan George Michael denken. Zijn te zoet en hij zingt 'oh' op 100 verschillende manieren. Denk op dit album bijvoorbeeld aan nummers als It Ain't No Use en Creepin'. De progressieve soul-Stevie vind ik wel legend. Zijn funk/R&B songs zijn sterk maar wel enigszins ondervertegenwoordigd op dit album helaas... Een matige score dus helaas 6/10 Highlights Boogie on Reggae Woman You Haven't Done Nothing

Never been a massive Stevie fan from the popular singles. This hasn’t converted me much, the first half was a bit bland. Second half was better - maybe I was just getting used to it? Consider this as 2.5 stars

Not a fan but I've got respect for the majesty of his prowess.. I like this album better than the later album he's more famous for (the overplayed one), this is more raw. 2 stars.

Stevie Wonder is one of those artists that I feel like I should be a fan of, and I do like some songs he's done, but overall I find it putting me to sleep. 2 stars at best for me.

He's got a wonderful voice, and I dig a few of these tracks, but most of the album is mostly forgettable to me.

Good vibes, but not enough for a second listen.
