Reviews (page 11 of 12)
Stevie Wonder is pretty great.
Ihan rennon letkeetä taas. They wont go if i go oli jostain tosi tuttu ja muutenkin hyvä kappale
Fine
Wonder is an excellent musician and songwriter, and that shows here but not in enough of the songs. About half the album seems “phoned in,” almost like someone asked an AI to write a Stevie Wonder album.
Filled with a lot of space and self-reflection, this album takes a step back from the normal bops of Stevie Wonder, but holds just as much of his iconic character.
BGM. Clean. Smooth. They Wont Go When I Go is my favorite. 3/5
Easy 3. Great singer, great arrangements, even one of my fave tracks by Stevie - Boogie On Reggae Woman Not much else to say about it though - the smooth R&B feel is not 100% my thing I guess. Still a very enjoyable record.
Beetje saai en zeikerig. Verder een erg lekker album
Ok
Not nearly as good as next album.
It has a good groove more or less throughout the album, and has much more interesting textures and forms than the recent albums from this era we've been listening to.
The “easy listening” of Stevie Wonder. It’s pleasant to listen to, but it’s nothing exceptional. 7/10.
okay
This was a mixed bag for me. I prefer Funky Stevie to Stevie Soft-Side, so I thoroughly enjoyed "Boogie on Reggae Woman" and "You Haven't Done Nothin'," the latter of which *might* be my favorite Stevie song (it's definitely top 3). The rest of the album left me wishing he'd bring back the funk, though.
I wanted to lie this more, but I didn't.
Not the greatest collection of Stevie Wonder songs in my opinion.
Easy listening! I especially liked They Won't Go When I Go as a change of pace.
Good album. Stevie Rocks
At the top of this I feared it was going to be easy listening hell - the first couple of tracks did little for me. But it got better with some proper swing later in the album - thankfully. I know people generally reckon Wonder as a genius and I do get that. Bits of this really got me, but other bits I can take or leave. But an interesting listen none the less.
As always great production and singing, the best sound from the area. It does lack excitement and engagement in the songwriting to elevate it.
Enjoyable music for the background but personally fails to be more than that
Had the good fortune of having this one on vinyl. Very nice, solid, pleasing record.
On the beach we're sitting Hugging, squeezing, kissing Why must it be That you always creep Into my dreams In my dreams When I'm sleep at night, baby I feel those moments of ecstasy When you sleep at night, baby I wonder do I creep into your dreams Or could it be I sleep alone in my fantasy 3/5
Standard Stevie Wonder fayre. Competent, funky in places, but let down by sickly sweet ballads where he does too much and that fucking high pitched harmonica or whatever it is.
i feel like whatever value it had when it got released it kinda lost it over time, its alright i suppose not really my genre either
This album was nicely sandwiched between Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life. I don't think it is as good as either of those, but that bar for comparison is set really high. Taken as a trio, its hard to think of better consecutive efforts, with this providing a solid bridge between intro and finale.
Fine album from SW. No massive hits on this one but it it oozes class and funk.
I ended up liking this a lot less than I expected. I was just sort of bored throughout
Stevie's got the voice but doesn't always have the lyrics.
Not his best but such a talent!
It's alright
It's ok, but nothing extra
I forgot it was on, despite sitting down specifically to listen to it. Perfect for background in a nice restaurant. Embodies "funky". Good to do the washing up to.
Little bit slow for me, not Stevie's greatest album
3rd Stevie Wonder album for me and this was my favorite. Maybe it just took some time for him to grow on me.
With one or two exceptions, Stevie Wonder music generally just passes over me, unless there is a song I'm really annoyed by ("I Just Called to Say I Love You"). He's one of those artists that I can tell is a really, really good musician, and it's really well-produced. Why doesn't it hit me like other similar music of the era? Is it TOO smooth? Big exception: I LOVE "They Won't Go When I Go", the haunting baroque-inspired song that captures the sadness and hope of any good funeral. It's also the only song that Wonder didn't write by himself, it was co-written by Yvonne Wright, who co-wrote the other Wonder song I like: "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)", so maybe she's the secret sauce. It looks like this album won every Grammy that year, so what do I know.
Pretty good
Boogie on... 10/5 Rest of the album, mellow but enjoyable... 3/5
Soulsy and bluesy.
One of his many enjoyable albums from his time on Tamla, always felt like this could have been a double-release alongside Innervisions because they share a vibe in many regards. One of the geniuses of chordal progression, simple but effective instrumentation and lyrical wordplay. Some of his songs' messages are incredibly effective and still make me stop and think, though this album is a bit lighter than on his other LPs. I still don't believe 100% he's blind. He plays the harmonica like Billy Joel.
A couple of good tracks but overall a bit slow moving.
One or two great tracks, a few more and this would've been a great album instead of just good.
Favorites: heaven is 10 zillion light years away and they won’t go when I go
Pretty solid album. Good vibes, never heard anything I wanted to skip. Nothing really grabbed me at the same time however.
It’s Stevie Wonder, which is almost always a good thing (for me) this album is a little boring to me. There weren’t really any standouts for me. I wouldn’t turn it off if someone put it on but I also wouldn’t seek it out. It’s just ok.
Not my preferred Stevie, really.
Bit too laid back for me - I guess at the right time it would be great
Ihan hyvin takaisin... HYVÄ! EI IHAN AJANTUHLAUSTA OLE TYKKÄÄN SOUNDISTA! (EI SE LEHTI JUMALAUTA KUN AINA PROPAGANDA JUTTUA MASTERMIND ROGER WATERSISSTA)
Stevie Wonder is hit or miss for me. Sometimes I really love his music, mostly I don't. This one was mostly a miss for me. You Haven't Done Nothing is fantastic, Boogie On is also really cool, and I want to like 10 Zillion, but I just can't hold on for the whole song. The rest I can toss.
3.5
No "big singles" on this one but a decent dive into some classic Stevie. Not something that really grabbed me.
Beetje muzak. Maar vanwege het mooie ‘They won’t go, when I go’ (nog beter in de cover van G. Michael) toch een zesje.
I feel bad but this just doesn't do it for me. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just not for me.
Boogie
Stevie has a great voice but the songs here just don't grab me. I've liked the other 2 albums I've had on this list prior much more. It's not bad though.
I love Stevie Wonder. I’m not sure this is his best.
Compared to the albums around this one in Wonder's discography, quite bland and forgettable. Not awful by any means and a pleasant listen but nothing particularly memorable. 3*
I prefer Stevie Wonder grooves to ballads so this album isn't up there with the best for me. Still great musically, but slimmer pickings in terms of the music I enjoy the most.
Gentle funky stuff from the legend Stevie Wonder. There weren't any tracks that stood out, mind.
I'm finding my enjoyment of Stevie Wonder albums largely depends on the schmaltz-squelch ratio. This one gets off to a bad start: 4 pretty schmaltzy numbers in the first 5. The second half is better, though, with You Haven't Done Nothin' in particular bringing some of that lovely squelchy goodness. They Won't Go When I Go doesn't fit into either category but it is a tune, and a welcome addition to the 'songs that appear on multiple of the 1001 albums' club.
nice, a bit too soft for me to be honest. 3
Some good funk, they won’t go when I go is a great little interlude
It was pretty good. There were any of Stevie's mega hits and in fact I don't think I was familiar with any of the songs; however, it was still alright.
Nice for having it running in the background, but closer listening does nothing for me. 2.5/5
I prefer funkie soulie Stevie to the MOR ballads, but this is good enough for a 3.
Fun funky soul. Glad to have listened, but usually something I want to listen to just a bit of, not a full album. 3.5
3/5. Many great songs but they don’t flow very well. Feels like many b-sides to other singles.
Good Melodie’s, no hits
Funky
Hmm. Stevie Wonder. I get the appeal but overall, just not my cup of tea. Gave this a listen and pleasant but not something I'd put on randomly. Drumming is on point.
Never really listened to Stevie Wonder except his hits that get a lot of radio play. This album was alright but not for me. Definitely not a bad album but it didn't click.
what i'd expect
3/10, 30%
True showcase of Stevie’s incredible voice. The whole album is smooth like butter. Some VERY funky grooves thrown in here, too.
Not as good as some Stevie Wonder, still nice though, would listen again.
It's all beautiful, but some of it is also just so boring to me :(
I think I preferred his political stuff.
Good vibes but not necessarily my thing
There's nothing flashy about this album. This is the recording of a guy who sat down and played songs that he wanted to play and wasn't worried about topping the charts or pressure from the record company. A nice listen, but nothing really stood out to me.
Boogie on Reggae Woman was super fun but most of other songs just miss the same energy. Nice but nothing to write home about.
Caught between *Innervisions* and *Songs In The Key Of Life*, it's always been hard for this one to have its own little place under the sun. In a way, this is understandable since not all the tracks on it are up to the level generally found in those two legendary albums--the first three songs, especially, rely a little too much on that sort of cheesy schmaltz Stevie Wonder will be associated with during the eighties. It's as if he stepped the wrong foot forward when starting this album, hence my own reluctance to list it in my own *essential* listens. Yet half of those tunes are still worth your time if you enjoy Stevie Wonder's "classic" years. "Boogie On Reggae Woman" slaps quite hard, displaying one of the best synth basslines Wonder ever wrote. "You Haven't Done Nothin'" succesfully continues that streak of songs following the "Superstition" template (after "Higher Ground " in *Innervision* and before "Black Man" in *Songs In The Key Of Life*). The lyrics on this one, denouncing the complacency of elites and governments, haven't aged a day. Unfortunately, I would add... Next highlight is one of the most precious and heartbreaking ballads Wonder has ever penned: "They Won't Go When I Go". Meditations about faith and death have rarely felt this soulful. What ensues after that deeply emotional moment goes to a totally different direction, with the bossa-nova/samba/Brazilian carnival-inspired "Bird Of Beauty". There's a great groove running throughout the track, plus a verse sung in Portuguese--I can swear the temperature in my living room just went a couple of degrees higher when I played that one. And finally, right after "Bird of Beauty", you have closer "Please Don't Go": just like the album itself, the song starts a little meek, but then builds up to a shining conclusion--nothing up to the bar "As" and "Another Star" will raise for the ending of *Songs In The Key Of Life*. But nice stuff nonetheless. Reading myself here, I understand my initial statement of this album as a whole might be a little harsh given the number of gems on it. Who knows, maybe I'll warm up to the other tracks later on? In the meantime... Number of albums left to review: 752 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 123 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 62 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 64
Not the best Stevie Wonder's project, but still a quite enjoyable record.
not particularly thrilling but good background music, enjoyed They won't go when I go
Classic Stevie. I was not familiar with this record at all but I like it. It's a little more somber than other Stevie albums I'm used to but it's refreshing in a way. Sometimes you don't feel like bopping along to superstition and this is a good change of pace.
There's a lot of good music by Stevie, unfortunately, this isn't one of his better albums, imo. I did enjoy most of it. Really liked You haven't done nothin and Boogie on Reggae woman. A couple if really good groove tunes. Too shy to say was one of the better mellow tunes Overall 2.5 -3 I did like, but he's got better stuff out there.
3.5 I’m a Stevie Wonder fan for sure but I’d never heard this one. It does t have any of his super hits but after about the 3rd sing in I was really jamming along to it and can see this being a good deep cut album. But still this and not Songs in the Key of Life or Innervisions?
3 I don't claim to know a ton of Stevie Wonder, but it doesn't feel like I'm listening to the best he has to offer here. Don't get me wrong, it's still an enjoyable album, and when it has its highs they're pretty high, but a lot of it was just pretty decent for me - I feel like I've heard other stuff of his that I've liked a lot more. Other than that, not a ton of thoughts... though the music on Creepin' gave me big old school Nintendo vibes. Like if you took an instrumental version of the track and put it in the background of like Big Boo's Haunt in Super Mario 64 or an Ocarina of Time temple I'm not sure I would even recognize the difference. Favorite songs: Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away, You Haven't Done Nothin', Creepin'
Not my favorite Stevie Wonder record, but still has the great musicianship he is known for.
They Won't Go When I Go njegova? Jeeeeeeeeesus, to je dobra stvar.
p316, 1974. 3 stars This is going to sound like heresy, but I don't think Steve Wonder is a great album artist. The singles are usually fantastic, and there are always one or two standout tracks, but there is also a lot of filler - and this album is no exception. I appreciate the craftmanship, but not sure I would listen to it again.
Hadn't heard this one before. Doesn't really hook me - 3 stars.
I enjoyed this. It was less familiar than other Stevie Wonder albums.
I always thought Stevie was drunk because of the way he sings /slurs "boogieonreggaaaawuman". Overall this was a fine album, nothing offensive but also not quite the same standard as Innervisions or Songs in the key of life.
In my opinion an okay album. not my favorite Stevie wonder album but has some good songs. best two songs on the album are: 1. boogie on reggae woman 2. you haven't done nothin` With an honorable mention going to heaven is 10 zillion light years away for its great instrumentation, but loses points for song content.
LOVE his voice and the more laid back feel of the song. I also really enjoyed the lyrics of some of these songs, just some of them are a bit too slow / bland for my taste currently. For some reason some of the songs remind me of Christmas songs or just Christmas time. Also of jazz / music you would listen to on a night drive, which is nice, but some of them kind of blend together for me. Some of the longer intros/outros also kind of threw me off because I’m not really used to that. Most of these songs don’t have a lot of replayability individually for me and my taste. The language switch up in Bird of Beauty was cool. There were some nice transitions between the tracks. Yeah there are moments in this album that are super Christmassy to me for some reason, but that’s not a complaint I love Christmas music. Overall I like the instrumental and the overall feel of the album, it was just a bit boring and there were only a few moments in the album / tracks that really stood out.
Good listen, nothing notable though.
Pretty good
Pretty chill album. Easy listening, a couple tracks that catch you and a few that are skippable.
Good album, slow songs works perfectly for working days.
3 stars at best. I like his hits, but this again is kinda background music.
Lepposa meno läpi levyn ja tuttuja riffejä pitkin levyä.
Chilli levy, ei hitti eikä huti. Kuunteli mielellään
Not Stevie's best album
not bad, but nothing really impressed me
A bit of a mixed bag. A few good tracks - Boogie on..., Smile Please & They won't go when I go - but overall lacks energy and rather bland. Not his best by any means
Stevie Wonder is truly a smooth soul singer, Fulfillingness' First Finale is a very easy listen, perfect to ease into the day. It is truly hard to believe that this is his 17th(!!!) album as it feels so effortless both musically and lyrically, although not as dance-y or grandiose as I might have assumed, the subdued nature allowed me to feel the groove of it and had to stop myself from dancing at my desk. His signature harmonicas throughout remind you that you're listening to Stevie (if you needed the reminder). Best: Smile Please Worst: It Ain't No Use
The ‘weakest’ in Stevie’s legendary run of albums in the 1970s - to my mind, a sustained period of creative genius unmatched in popular music ever. (Beethoven and Bach composed for mass audiences too, by the way). It isn’t a weak album, obviously. But the introspection sits a little heavily upon it at times. Still a pleasure to listen to it, though.
just average easy listening, nothing special
recommended for: a disco where you don't really want to dance. I'm learning my music taste isn't as eclectic as I thought. I don’t like the slow songs on this album. Love "you haven't done nothin'". 2.5 round up to 3(mixed).
Interesting to hear a full album by Wonder; can see his genius in some of the songs. The slower ones drag a bit though.
Nice background music. Would give a 3.5
stevie.
What do you call Stevie Wonder playing tennis? Endless love.
I had kind of a shower thought while listening to this album, specifically during the second track in which Stevie ponders why people think of him as a lesser man because he’s black. This made me think of a lot of other Stevie songs that deal with discrimination and race relations. Here’s a blind man who deals with issues of people judging people based on skin color. Color. Something he’s never seen. Being blind, Stevie simply cannot judge people on what they look like, including skin color. But here he is singing about being black. That’s just so fucked up...that prejudice is so strong a blind man knows what it means to be black.
IDK if this album was less interesting than Innervisions or if I just wasn't in the mood but it didn't really hook me. Weird that this list has Wonder's 16th AND 17th studio albums. Was that era of his life *really* that important?
Only knew Stevie Wonder for being blind. Who would've thought his music is actually good?
Wasn't bad, but also not that great (for me). I don't know why I don't connect with this sort of music very much. It wasn't very engaging. 3/5
I was pretty good, though not as good as other Stevie Wonder I've heard.
A decent album but I wasn't as thrilled with this as I am some of Stevie's other albums.
I love Stevie Wonder but probably in small doses. This is a beautiful album but I actually had to double check I had already listened to it. Maybe I was distracted but the album didn't leave a lasting impression on me
Can't really reach the greatness of his other albums, so I'm not much sure why it's on the list, nevertheless I love it. 3
First of all, that's a great album cover. Second, that's a great album title. And while this one didn't leave me humming anything in particular, I'm hard-pressed to find a bad moment on this one. I could let this play in the background forever and probably let it play in the foreground for a few spins, too. I'd need a good long car ride alone with it to focus on it, probably. Regardless, glad I heard it.
Yeah, similar to what Craig said I did not pick out a single banger on this album, and yet... I mean, it's Stevie Wonder so it ain't like it's hot garbage. Perfectly listenable and enjoyable. But absolutely nothing stood out to me. Continues to be shocking that there's still so little overall variety on a list of one thousand records. Also, continues to be not shocking at all. We gotta be due some more hip hop or metal soon, right? Or country? When was the last country record on this list? And I guess they're just ignoring classical altogether, right? Dunno, but I think this list might be some bullshit.
This was fine as background stuff but nothing amazing here.
3rd May 2022 Listened in the morning on the way to work. Met woody after work in the pub. Not bad, he has an amazing voice but don’t think I gave it proper attention. Great production.
Stevie is great but not my favourite.
Not as good as previous SW offering
This was nice to listen to but nothing really stood out as amazing to me. Wouldn't turn it off but wouldn't seek it out.
decent, but sounds like Innervisons b-sides in comparison
I think there are better Stevie Wonder albums to come, this is fine, if not a tad forgettable
I like some of the funkiness but so far not the best Stevie Wonder has to offer. You haven't done nothing is pretty good though. They won't go when I go also kind of rules.
17th album. How...just where and how does he come up with all of this music? There's some substance to the lyrics here beyond the just soulful sound you expect from Wonder. Songs about being better people and knowing each other. Pretty good stuff!
Not really for me, this one!
The music was good, but not necessarily my thing. It was a more somber record and wasn't necessarily what I would want to listen to very often.
Stevie Wonder had a string of albums that delicately balanced cheese with badassery before descending entirely into cheese. This was the end of the streak, and you're starting to see the tightrope walker wobble. There was still some decent soul, but the funk bangers were a thing of the past at this point.
Nothing really stands out here, but it sounded nice enough. Probably wouldn't listen again, but I definitely didn't have to grit my teeth as it played. 3/5.
Enjoyed it all the way through, but nothing stood out in particular. 3/5
Stevie Wonder is always fun.
Really liked bizarre sound playing in the background in a couple of songs.
3-; nice soul album but nothing too special
Classic Stevie Wonder.
Average. Just average. C+
3 1/2
The stand-out track is "You Haven't Done Nothin'", but the rest of the album isn't quite as classic as other Stevie Wonder works. It feels like Stevie in his imperial phase, but perhaps phoning it in in places.
Disappointing, there's better SW albums
I've got this on vinyl and I listen to it whenever I want to feel thoroughly disappointed. It's OK, but pales in comparison to "The Best Of ... "
I've been digging the Stevie Wonder albums on the 1001. This one isn't my favourite, but still enjoyed it.
Really good. 3/5 Standouts: They Won't Go When I Go, Boogie On Ragaee Woman, You Haven't Done Nothin'. Others: Too Shy to Say, Creepin', It's No Use, Please Don't Go
thought I'd enjoy this more than I did, became pretty much background noise, was toying with 2 stars and then "They don't go when I go" came in and made this a firm 3
Bland de svagare steviealbumet helt ärligt. Kvaliten är i vanlig ordning skyhög dock
Must’ve been a stoned review to put this in rather than one of his more upbeat albums. Still enjoyable, but nothing incredible. His voice seems a lot different to later songs
Not bad but nothing special
Some really good songs but quite a mix from track to track.
A mellower more boring SW
Probably a little disappointing. But Heaven is 10 Zillion Years Away was great.
A pretty casual, easy listening album. 0RS
Some really good tunes on here
Preferred Innervisions, had more standout tracks. Love Stevie Wonder but this is harder to get into and feels a little repetitive at times.
this is pretty good overall.
Kind of chill, kind of vibey.
Listen, I know it's good and all but it doesn't do much for me. Only track I really liked personally was "You Haven't Done Nothing" due to the synth(?) sound and energy, if anything it sounds like Superstition to me which came out 2 years before this album. The rest is a bit too earnest in its moodiness.
Not his best but very solid
A lot more refined and mellowed out than I expected. I think I am more familiar with his upbeat radio hits. An unexpected treat. But there is one thing.... Wonder? Rings a bell for some reason... wonder.... Strange.
So many of his songs held hope for a better humanity....
“Largely a stripped down and more personal sounding record.”
A boring listen. Wonder loves his chromatic movements and they get tiring quick. There isn't a single memorable song on this album.
Slower than I was excepted. Best one: You haven't Done nothin
Didn't vibe
Aight
I don't get the cultural adoration for Stevie Wonder. I do have to wonder (sorry) if I'm missing something. Do people really think this is one of the greatest albums ever? Sure Stevie was talented but it's all just so... bland?
Sure, he's a genius musician and songwriter, but what makes this, his 17th studio album, so necessary to be heard? I couldn't say after listening to it.
I recognise the album cover, but I've never heard this record before - in fact, I don't think I've heard any of the songs on it before. Which is a bit weird. For the most part, it's a nice enough record - very laid back, very relaxed - it just sort of innocently and harmlessly pootles along. It starts, it ambles, then it ends. Which is... nice. If you like that sort of thing. Stevie Wonder is at his best when the melodies make your tummy go funny, but there's none of that going on here. By the end of it, I still felt like I'd never heard it.
4/10
Not his best work.
Tolerable but rather boring.
not really having it. beautiful album cover. i liked “you haven’t done nothin”.
Just wasn't my cup of tea
Ahi
Very weak album by Stevie
I’ll be honest I got a bit bored during this album. Stevie wonder is iconic and obviously highly revered for a reason. I just didn’t find any of those reasons here. 2.0/5.0 Best Song: You Haven’t Done Nothin
just not really for me
Not my favorite.
not that its bad in any meaningful way, just extremely boring
No wonder.
This one didn’t hit. Song in the Key of Life was way better. I still like Smile Please, though.
It was ok not my cup of tea
I dont know. Felt poppy and formulaic and boring with none of the excitement of some of his other works. Am i wrony? Do i need to relisten?
Not in my top 5 Stevie Wonder albums, kind of feels like it is a big influence on where R'n'B in the 90s came from.
Nothing special stood out
created to please an audience that im not part of, too much piano
rlly not my vibe but i can see people loving it too. my fav was yu havent done nothin 4/10 album in my opinion
This is my introduction to Stevie Wonder. I found it a little bit boring tbh, probably because I haven't really been listening to soul.
Didn’t dig the last Stevie Winder album that popped up. Tried to leave expectations at the door when listening to this one. First half is just boring easy listening music. I know how talented he is, but this is just so uninspiring. Then “You Haven’t Done Nothing” starts and the funk vibe and cool bass got me bobbing my head a bit. But then back to elevator music. Sorry Stevie.
Stevie is overrated. There, I said it. Somebody had to.
Was not feeling this Stevie
I was surprised that I didn't enjoy the music very much.
It was just okay to me, again not my genre. I had a distracted listen so I should listen through again sometime.
This was pretty ok. Might have been a tough sell for a monday morning album. I enjoyed the second half of the album more than the first.
Not a fan of Stevie Wonder
A bit disappointing to be honest. The stand out track is You Haven't Done Nothin', but the heavy clavinet usage makes it feel like Superstition-lite. This list is a constant reminder that even the greats produced plenty of mediocre stuff.
Some good Stevie, but Signed Sealed Delivered is still my favorite album of his
I recognize his contributions, but just not my cuppa
Inte för mig
below what i'd expect from Stevie Wonder
I was really disappointed by this album. I listened to “Songs in the Key of Life” a couple of weeks ago and it quickly became one of my favorite albums. This album has a couple of good songs, but most of it is easy listening music that you hear playing at the grocery store. Not for me.
A bit "nicer" than some of the other early 70s albums, i.e. duller.
7/10 It would sound great on a record
I’m not a huge Stevie fan and I’m unfamiliar with most of his catalog except Innervisions which was on this list, but I associate the sound of this album with his later work. The difference in these two records in both quality and style is so great that if his voice wasn’t familiar I would have attributed it to someone else entirely. While Innervisions epitomized funk jazz soul, very little of that is in evidence here. FFF is more a gospelized pop album of the sort that would eventually give us I Just Called To Say I Love You and other tripe. His approach to his instrument even seems to be different. In that album he approached the keys as the cornerstone to the song and managed to play a funky bass line, rhythm chords, and melody lines all at once in a flurry of notes. Accordingly it required less accompaniment since it cover so much ground. In this album, the keys are primarily used to play very simple chord based lines that need more added to the production to fill out the space. He’s like a keyboard player for a lounge singer here. All around a less successful outing than Innervisions and pretty disappointing.
Bastantes onomatopeyas. OK "They wont go when I go" I hear you. Thats what I am talking about! Definitivamente no mi estilo y no seré tan buena esta vez. No es malo, solo meh.
Just two stars for this one. Stevie has a great voice and some great hits, but not on this album. I felt this album was lacking. A product of its’ time and not particularly memorable.
not bad I like the instrumentals I just don't think I would listen to these songs
It was fine but like.....why is it here
Had achterwege mogen blijven.
I am really tired but I found that to be pretty boring. Not sure I enjoy his voice too. Some songs were kinda good tho if I zoned out.
I know he’s a great artist but I just can’t get into his music. I wasn’t a fan of this album
Boring start Beautiful arrangements with some real nice sounds unfortunately mixed with too much nasal warble
Not my type
🥇heaven is 10 zillion light years away 🥈you haven’t done nothin 🥉smile please HM: creepin
Funky. Creepy. Not Stevie's finest hour
stevie slop
Not a fan of r&b apparently
It's fine, 2.5
I quite enjoyed the last Stevie Wonder album that came up, even if I did feel it was quite twee in places. So don’t mind diving into another of his. This one was ok, but no where near as strong as “Songs in the Key of Life”. Sort of flew by as background music without anything standing out crying for attention.
Surprisingly forgettable offering from Stevie here
Ikke så spændende
Not my thing
It's got some great tracks on it and it's clearly outstanding musicianship and writing, but there's something about the saccharine vibe on a lot of Stevie's stuff that just really puts me off. Absolutely loved Boogie on Reggae Woman though.
Not for me
I do really like Stevie Wonder albums from the 70s but not particularly this one, other than “ Boogie on reggae woman” bit disappointing tbh
couple of bangers on this one but the tracks I don't like are really not for me. not really a soul guy. but funk yes
Not my style of music but it would be OK to have in the background, kind of like elevator music. I did add one song, "You Haven't Done Nothin", to my best of 1974 playlist, mainly just because it's Stevie Wonder. It will probably end up near the bottom of that list.
not feeling it
Lovely to listen to while walking! I didn’t like any of the songs on this one as much as the other songs of his that I’m familiar with, but I liked it overall and found it engaging. His voice is so amazing and feels so good to hear, it’s very easy listening. I have no connection to religion but hearing someone like Stevie Wonder sing about it is very moving.
It's so fucking wrong, dude. I was having the time of my life with my Hiby DAP yesterday when the thing went and broke down on me today. I'm not entirely sure why, but it won't charge. I remember changing the USB settings to a file transfer mode yesterday, which could be the reason as to why it isn't charging. I'm gonna be so pissed off if that turns out to be the case. Anyways, enough blogging on the thousandty-eighty-nine albums website. It hasn't been long since my last Stevie Wonder album - just 11 albums since I listened to Songs in the Key of Life. That album was bad news, truth be told. An hour-forty is just way, way too fucking long for an album. "Isn't She Lovely" was a good cut alongside a handful of other decent tracks, though the album made me reluctant to engage with this site for a few days. Maybe the third Wonder album will be the one to win me over. Yeah. It's more Stevie Wonder, alright. This was okay. I could get down with the lively, funky sound on the first four or so tracks, but this album kind of goes out to lunch for the remainder of it's runtime. I cared little for the more subdued tracks, and the energetic ones felt like they were treading the same ground. Wonder is a talented and charismatic vocalist, but he kind of writes his songs in a way where the vocal segments are near-identical to one another. If I were a bigger fan of this style I wouldn't have any complaints, but as a more mellow-tempered listener I find that his style has a limit to how long it can hold my attention. The instrumentals are decent. I admire the variety and experimentation with different genres/instruments, though I once again find that soul has a limited appeal in the long run. Book time. Most successful release from his classic quartet of albums. Stevie was going bonkers during the recording of this album. I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but four list albums seems like the perfect number for an artist of Stevie's standing. I cosign this inclusion.
Just can't get into it
I enjoyed 3 songs (It Ain't No Use, Please Don't Go, You Haven't Done Nothin'). Simply wasn't my cup of tea, I don't love slower songs.
GOING IN: Not fussed really LISTENED WHILE: on the train FAMILIARITY: Know the artist, not the album SKIP RATE: Skipped the odd one REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Peaked mid-way VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Sitting nicely - Motionless appreciation FAVOURITE TRACK: My Rating: 2
The songs are smooth and easy to listen to, but nothing really appealed to me. There are no songs that I would want to relisten to.
I think Stevie Wonder is a hit-maker artist, and this album didn't have any hits. So it didn't really do it for me, despite the greatness of the artist.
A couple of funky bangers (Boogie on Reggae Woman, You Havent Done Nothin) however too many elevator muzak fillers to elevate this beyond a solid 2 star.
I don’t know what it is but Stevie Wonder just doesn’t quite land with me. He has some absolutely great songs but I guess I prefer him when he’s doing funk rather than slower tracks. I’m less familiar with the songs on this album, it’s certainly not as good as Innervisions, which sounded far more essential to my ears; I’m yet to listen to Talking Book or Songs in the Key of Life, which are perhaps the last chance to win me over. In all likelihood I might have to be someone who enjoys the hits. Songs like Too Shy to Say just made this quite dull.
Not good
I am soulless and therefore, do not enjoy.
Pretty sure there’s a comma missing in “Boogie On Reggae Woman”. I also wonder if anyone ever told Stevie it wasn’t there?
How come so much Stevie Wonder sounds like Christmas Pop?
Creepin was good. Heaven is 10 zillion miles away was good. A touch too gospely
Not the best of stevie
Spritzig funkiger Softporn meets die Sims Baumodus
Mjo
Another Stevie and I Wonder why so many on the list. I just don't have the ear for his work. I don't see the draw. This album was more of the same from the the wonder boy with cheesy motown sound. It got better at the end with the creepy track "They Won't Let Me Go" and the 2 finishers. Not buying it...1.69 stars.
Fell asleep.
Stevie Wonder is a musical genius and virtuoso. But I don’t think this is one of his better albums.
A great voice but this album felt uninspiring.
I don’t really care for this harmonica in “Creepin’” Like nails on a chalkboard. This was nice but just not my favorite.
Strong beginning with more upbeat songs but the rest is kind of boring to me with jazzy or slow songs
I just can’t think of any context where I’m throwing this on. I’m slightly more favorable to this because I didn’t know Stevie Wonder had a certain level of humor to him. Creepin’ & saying things like 10 zillion make for At least a more interesting listen.
Not as funky as some of the Wonder's albums I've listened to. Sadly that meant it was kind of forgettable for me.
Don’t like Jesus enough for this one
ughh, basically ok. too much sleazy sexyness.
I know this is good music, just not quite my style...but he has a beautiful voice. 2.5/5
I feel like there is a big disadvantage for the albums that are fresh to the ear, that have never been heard by the listener before. Stevie Wonder is a legend, but to me he sounds like a vocal that any boy bend has and honestly this album didn’t do justice. It’s fine melodically, it’s not the worst thing to listen to, but it hasn’t evoked anything in my soul and I think that’s what it comes to at the end of the day, not just in music but in life. :)
Little bland. Not funky enough. Liked You Haven't Done Nothin... best track by a mile. Wanted more funk. It was funk-less. Funk
I found the first half of the album really, really boring. Thankfully the second half had some great tracks. 2/5
Stevie Wonder is maybe on the Mount Rushmore of modern musicians. Miles Davis, Lennon/McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Herbie Hancock, Brian Wilson...whomever else you want to put on there, he is a GIANT. In other words, you don't have to ask me twice to listen to a Stevie Wonder album. This one contains the seminal track, Boogie On Reggae Woman...one of the most covered, most interesting songs from this era, imo. Talk amongst yourselves - I'll give you a topic: Boogie On Reggae Woman is neither Boogie or Reggae...Discuss! It is a favorite of organ trios and jazz covers of all time. The chord changes and the vibe Stevie creates with this anomaly of a song are incredible. I'm not smart enough to explain why this song is so great, other than - it just is. You Haven't Done Nothin' is another clav-heavy, horn backed funky jam that you should be familiar with. The rest is a variety of heart-felt Stevie jams.
Mangler mer enn bare synet, han her.
It’s Stevie, so there are interesting things happening here. But, overall it was a bit of a slog. Lots of songs get close to something interesting, but none get all the way there. A bit of a disappointment for me. Standout Track(s): Please Don’t Go
I didn't really get much out of this. Worst Stevie Wonder album on the list so far for me.
I like Stevie Wonder but didn’t really like this
I actually really liked a couple songs on this album. However, I found most of it really slow and tiresome. Also, maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I don't really like the constant vocal embellishments that Stevie Wonder uses.
Man, this is boring stuff.
It wasn't a terrible album, by any means, but it's just not my style of music and did NOT fit the vibe for me today.
I normally don't mind Stevie, but today I just wasn't feeling it.
Not holding up to time as well as it could.
Not for me.
Gg
I don't mind Stevie Wonder, he's responsible for some great music, particularly from the '70s, and I was looking forward to this. Sadly, with the exception of a couple of bangers, which are ace, the album is fairly lame. Proper Radio 2 fare. Also that title...WTF! Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Disappointing ★★☆☆☆
Not my cup if tea
3/10
Not my favorite Stevie Wonder
alright. low stevie work
Too mellow for me personally. You Haven't Done Nothin' was good but won't be coming back to the rest of this album anytime soon.
Usually I like Stevie Wonder more, but the album was kinda meh for me
It was ok, a little bit too cheesy and lacked the funk/soul of Stevie's best stuff. Maybe not quite necessary to have on the list when we have his better albums on here already
Background music.
I realise that Stevie Wonder is hugely important to black music and I can understand that to some extent. But his songs rarely grab me. Only with Creepin' did he reach me. There are too many mellow songs on the album for me. Ok, it's soul...but that's exactly what he doesn't find with me. At least on this album
I know that Stevie is a legend, and his music isn't bad, but this one just didn't do much for me.
