Reviews (page 7 of 12)
All bangers so far, no woman no cry, lively up yourself, rebel music. It's reggae night at frog and peach. Fun album, I think all songs are easy to listen to.
I'm as big a Bob Marley fan as they come. But even I can't justify including 3 of his albums on this list, when so many reggae greats were snubbed. And as wonderful as this album is, of the 3 on this list (Catch a Fire and Exodus being the others), it is probably the weakest one, though still a great intro to the man's music.
Lively Up Yourself / Them Belly Full / Rebel Music / Natty Dread are all vintage Marley - 4 classics in a 10 track album is a seriously good batting average. That said, the entire album feels a bit sterile compared to his other recordings. It was never just Marley and the two missing Wailers is felt here - especially on “No Woman No Cry”. The drums feel small and the instrumentation sounds empty while somehow still sounding over produced. There are great songs here but I’ll take the live recordings any day
Never really sat and listened to Bob Marley before, but loved it. Album has great vibes to it.
Not a huge reggae fan but honestly this album surprised me, I think the first two tracks are kind of weak because they seem to be more of a fusion sorta genre, ex. Song 1 has a lot of blues licks sort of feel to them which I’m not sure I’m a fan of. For me the staples are definitely “No woman, no cry”, “rebel music” and “so jah seh”
Hard not to enjoy a Marley album. Enjoyed this take on No Woman.
3.9 - reggae classic with great mix of political and spiritual lyrics. First three tracks are Marley at his best.
I never heard this album. Bob's move away from Bunny and Peter paid dividends a few years later as his new band embraced London music of the day and let it fuse their reggae in a subtle way. His album called Live! had many of the same tracks at Natty D. There must be a story about the reasons for separate live albums so close together.
I was surprised to find out that my favorite song, “We Belly Full” was not a Bob M composition and actually, he received credit for only a few songs on the LP. But it turns out he was in a contract dispute so he gave the royalties to friends and family. I gave a 5 to Exodus because every song was strong, 0% filler. I like these tracks too. If I were to compare him to 70s soul singers, singing about social injustices, he would be at the head of the pack, but just short of the bar that he would set for himself.
Yep, pertinent, groovy, intéressant. Le drum machine était pas nécessaire à mon avis. Il y a aussi les claviers qui ne semblent ps être au même party que les autres.
listened to again a quintessential album
You gotta love bob. Anytime he’s on my anxieties melt and all is generally good with the world - yet the songs are still some of the most poignant protest songs out there. What do you know.
verrrry natty
So next to Legend, this is probably the best BMar album. Great development of songs and style.
This is the second Bob Marley & The Wailers albums I have gotten. I really enjoyed the first one. Besides his biggest hits, I am mostly unfamiliar with his songs. I am really enjoying this album as well. The lyrics are so powerful and enlightening.
Beautiful album
Jah bless
I currently have a trial subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio. I listen to the Bob Marley station more than I'd expect. My favorite is the "classic" recordings that sound old and...smokey. I love this record. It has a couple classics. And it just feels right. The title track is really great and I'd never heard it before. The backing vocals...so good.
Solid, though reggae tends to get pretty repetitive for me. 7/10
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: No woman no cry, Them belly full, Revolution
Not quite as good as exodus but still really good bob marley. I really liked rebel music
When Bob Marley Became a global superstar.... Great album with an accessible (to the European and American ear) version of Reggae that opened the door to the aformentioned superstardom. Favourites "Lively Up Yourself" "No Woman No Cry" "Natty Dread" and "Revolution" Super album and rightfully on the list.
Phenomenally groovy. Just the kind of laid-back intelligent reggae designed for today's warm Easter Monday holiday afternoon. Easy to forget this is authentic Jamaican reggae and simply damn fine groove-orientated pop music. Excellent.
I enjoyed this album a lot🤓
Good jams, good messages.
The sound that launched the second wave of punk, new wave and post-punk. The voice of that sound, Bob Marley is still influential, some 40 years after his death. And there's a reason, Bob's sound is often copied, but never duplicated. Natty Dread drags on a little towards the end, but this album got well worn by the youth across the pond. 4/5.
Three and a half stars. I've checked out Dimery's list. *Catch A Fire* and *Exodus* are on it. But not *Burnin'*. How can *Burnin'* NOT be on that list??? Obviously, *Natty Dread* is a likely contender for the fourth slot in the list of the best Bob Marley albums ever. But does that make it an *essential* listen for general audiences who would want to know more about Bob and his Wailers? I'm not so sure. Everybody obviously mentions that original version of *No Woman, No Cry*, and how clunky it sounds compared to that legendary live rendition. That being said, opener "Lively Up Yourself", along with "Them Belly Full", "Rebel Music" and "Natty Dread" are choice cuts. The late entrance of the horns section in the first of these tracks is incredibly effective, transcending the whole piece into another level, one that somehow foretells the epic mysticism of *Exodus*. "Them Belly Full" is a hymn as topical (tropical?) as it is enticing to the ear. And the instrumentation on "Rebel Music" is smart and intricate, guitar licks, harmonica and organ adding layers to a six-minute lush experience that seem to last half as much. The end of the record is notoriously weaker, though, except "Revolution", maybe--nice high-pitched vocals from Marley at the very end, quite uncharacteristic from him. But apart from those sorts of moments, I'm still of two minds about the whole thing. Maybe Jah should teach me to let it go on that listing thing, about what's supposedly essential or not. Mystical music doesn't work like that, does it? So, I'm gonna light up a spliff, probably add this record to my small personal reggae collection, and say that in the end, *everything's gonna be alright*... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 943 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 26 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 16 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important to me): 16
1974. No Woman No Cry, Lively Up Yourself, Them Belly Full
Nice
Good album. "No Woman No Cry" is def the biggest, most recognizable song on this album. 7/10.
Great album. Brilliant musicianship and real style.
It’s ok
Расслабляет. No Woman No Cry топчик.
Love it!
Great sound and some nice songs
Breath of fresh air.
4.0 - Hadn't heard this Marley album before and initially anticipated muddy recordings like on "Catch A Fire" but thank goodness that's not the case with "Natty Dread." The tracks sound crisp and accentuate Marley's songwriting. I love the heavy vocal reverb, a Marley signature. This album's got a relaxed, lived-in feel that few other artists can achieve at Marley's level. A terrific record to tame an anxious spirit and to keep the calm, happy vibes flowing.
Groovy baby
Go to prison fuk ya fathaaaaa
Classics. Reggae done very well.
I'm a reggae fan though don't listen to much. It is easy to feel the vibe and passion in the music as well as appreciate the power and meaning of his lyrics. Great album.
this one had the song
Good shit, man. That is all.
Quite possibly Marley's best most consistent album, with the album um closer the only really forgettable track. 4 🌟
The legend
Best reggae ever
Ah man, always happy to see Bob's name pop up, I know i'll love the music, and listen to the album on repeat as I discover so many great album tracks. Loses 1 point as I realised how much greater the live track of No Woman No Cry is. Still genius.
Bob Marleys Satisfy my soul is quite good
Some Natty, no cry
I don't love a lot of reggae albums, but I love this one. Lively Up Yourself is a perfect song to start the album with because it works so well on its own, but it also gives them somewhere to go. Them Belly Full might be my favorite Bob Marley song. I think I like the original version of No Woman, No Cry better than the more famous version on Legend. I don't love every song on this album, but it goes by really quick and keeps my interest pretty well 4/5
Fill of classic Marley songs. The production on some of the later songs were a little less exciting but that might be that the classics were earlier on the record.
Great album, no woman no cry. 1974.
Nice to dance along to.
Wow! Conosciuto, ma mai ascoltato tutto. Mood pacifico e rilassante, canzoni molto belle, da 'No woman, no cry' a 'So ja Seh'.
Bit torn on this one. I think I was expecting it to be better than it was so was maybe a bit down on it. It wasn't as good as Peter Tosh's album but it was good. Recency bias, it was better than the last couple so I'll give it a low 4.
way too chill for my liking
Really good Reggae, peace man, peace.
Solid gold
First time hearing no woman no cry studio version.
Natty Dread probably one of the most essential Bob Marley record you could own. It's a spiritually charged political and social statement.(7/10) FT: Lively Up Yourself
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), Bend Down Low, Talkin' Blues Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Only giving Exodus a 3 might be my coldest take ever. If only I hadn't gotten it as my 4th album on the generator. That album is a stone cold 5. This one was not as good (still great), but will get a better grade because I goofed.
Enjoyed this - it's nice to hear so many songs that I haven't heard to death on best ofs or random radio play. Fave track - "Them Belly Full" - the opening almost sounds like Tortoise!
I'm not the biggest reggae fan, but it's a pleasant album.
Great Marley album. Nothing mind blowing, but overall strong start to finish.
First one listened to, lots of memories although these are rougher versions.. Great start.
Bob Marley is classic although he’s songs all kinda sound the same
I'm all about positivity in music, and that's exactly what Bob Marley & The Wailers exemplify on this record, at least in tone. While managing to keep that funky, upbeat backbone that reggae is so widely recognized for, they tackle some serious issues on this record including poverty, political control, religion and Jamaican society. There are some moments that become slogs and you sort of lose focus on where the song wants to take you, but just getting lost in the jam is part of the fun. Half on the songs on this record stand up against Marley's best work, the rest sort of get lost in themselves. Overall, an above average album that I'd go back to listen to again. Song I Already Knew: No Woman No Cry Favorite Song: Lively Up Yourself Least Favorite: Rebel Music
1st listen
great album, if you know bob marley you know how it sounds
Great for historical reasons but I can’t say with confidence that it will be on high rotation.
Nas margens do Bósforo há uma casa e nessa casa há uma pessoa e nessa pessoa há um dedo e nesse dedo há a memória do teu corpo e nessa memória há as águas do Bósforo a entrar pelo Mediterrâneo.
Love me some Bob Marley. 4 stars.
So good, still to this day. I love the low-fi, stripped down production that you just don't hear anymore.
No woman no cry - certified banger
Reggae at it's best. Just great music and good vibes.
Mellow
a classic, I love it
Love this album even though not my favorite genre
I think that "Legend" and "Natural Mystic" are the only albums from Bob Marley that I've heard all the way through, and they are 'greatest hits' compilations. It was good to listen to an album that isn't a compilation. The one song I've heard before many times, "No Woman No Cry", wasn't even the version I'm most familiar with. My favorites from the album are "Lively Up Yourself" and "So Jah Seh". This album is right on the edge of 'I MIGHT listen to this again', so for today I'm going round up and say 4 stars.
Authentic, passionate, down to earth, Rasta flavor from the king himself.
pretty good, very upbeat, added a few songs to my liked songs
Super chill Reggae music from the legendary Reggae artist himself. This album didn't have his most famous songs, but it was still a pleasure to listen to.
Not one of his best but still a good solid release
Enjoyed this
good album. definitely gonna be listening more.
Great sounds, but not sth I would listen to in general
Great album
Really fantastic, has hits but also the whole album is great.
Great music from a place of hardship. Easy to empathize with.
Love me some reggae
Very vibey. Nice feelins incoming.
Oude parels met niet zo bekende nummers.
Muziek waarin je gemakkelijk kan wegglijden om even alles rondom je te vergeten. Een genre waarvan ik nu pas besef hoe zwaar ik het verwaarloosd heb.
3.9 very close.
Knikkebollend (op de soort van dansende manier, niet in slaap vallen...) met dit op de achtergrond. Goeie muziek, maar geen 'Wauw-gevoel'
Not for background listening, but lots of classics.
💚💛🖤
Danny fucking Baker
Very well produced album
😍
Reggae suave. Un megahit.
Classic, but not mind-blowing
I liked it. Easy listening
Pretty good. Very relaxing. Solid classic reggae underneath each song and revolutionary lyrics.
classic
good times
I've loved the Bob Marley I knew, but that was essentially just Legend, and a few other select tracks. This was a fun feel-good album that would go perfect on the background of a summer BBQ. A few hits to up the energy, and a lot of tunes that will fade into the background and keep the mood light. No Woman, No Cry was interesting - I don't think I'd ever heard the original recoridng? Sounds wat different, and I understand why the live version has become the standard....it's better.
Accidently started album in middle with title song. Funky and vibey beginning as expected. "Them Belly Full" was rad. Half listened to middle due to doing stuff. Sound a tad samey throughout but still enjoyable and vibey from start to finish.
Really enjoyed this. I know some Marley. But clearly not enough. I feel like I have only ever heard a greatest hits album.
Good album to drive to. Smooth from start to finish.
You can feel the love and positivity throughout. Amazing.
Like jazz I don't feel qualified to judge reggae. Am I qualified to judge anything? Always liked Marley, of course the regard of white former college boys is fraught for this Jamaican protest music.
@@@@. Nice rhythms, good vibes.
Gotta love Bob
I liked this album. It started off strong with Lively up Yourself and No woman no cry. Probably considered to be a great album
I don't listen to much reggae, but I really enjoyed this. The vibes: present, the rhythm: strong, the Jamacia: yup. Favorite songs Lively Up Yourself and Talkin' Blues. This makes me excited for the possibility of more reggae on the list and I will be diving deeper into Bob Marley's discog. 6/8.
Fan va bob e kung, lite kontrast att höra den i slutet på feb i snöslaskigt Stockholm dock lol
Yes. Bob marley is an Icon, a Hero, a defining artist
I want this on vinyl
så skön
Very good, but I think Exodus and Catch a Fire edge it
The fact that 'Family Man' of The Wailers has 41 children is a very amusing piece of trivia.
I don't have any particularly coherent thoughts on evaluating reggae. Still wrapping my mind around the genre traits. It's a chill album. Bob sounds utterly earnest.
The original version of No Woman No Cry is pretty amazing compared the the more famous live version.
I appreciate the significance of this album, but for me, it's not the greatest Bob Marley album. There are several others not in the list that would be my preference.
Fine Not a patch on Exodus
No woman no cry!!!
thank god i got to listen to this after that police album so i know to be grateful. i think the vocal stylings of reggae (and 1st wave ska tbh for maybe obvious reasons) are an aspect i don't often vibe with but i could appreciate them here and especially loved the inclusion of lady backup singers. i really also liked the instrumentation throughout this album, there were elements layered in i hadn't really heard or at least listened for before, and i appreciated the songwriting both in subject matter and like... lyrical craft? but not sure that i would return to this whole album. fav: them belly full
Never been huge into reggae, but now I get it. Some qualities of the mix were alright when they could’ve been great, but I’m not here to bitch and moan. It was a great feel-good record!! Not my usual cup of tea, but the herbs in this teabag sure are flavorful. 3.5 stars
The sun is shining and the music is playing. The best setting for this music is there. So maybe my score is somewhat higher than I would normally give for this kind of records. All the songs have the same vibe, good for a song of two, but a whole album is too much for me. 3/5
I definitely didn't give this the focused listen it deserves. Really enjoyed some of the groove of it. Some of it felt a little bit sanitised by super clean production style for my tastes.
Perushyvä kuuntelukokemus. Tokaisinkin jo, että reggaen ongelma itelle on biisien samankaltaisuus. Kolme biisiä laitoin listalle
Good for playa
Chill vibes
Still pretty good, but I kind of have to give a Bob Marley album below a 4. Its a high 3 though.
Second album by Bob Marley in this project. Not a big fan of reggae. But, in any case, this is indeed pretry good. Songs I enjoyed: "Lively up Yourself", "Natty Dread", or "Talkin' Blues" (good lyrics). I found some of the guitar licks particularly nice. I also like the theme and lyrics.
Every Bob Marley album I’ve listened to I’ve only really enjoyed after a few listens. This I played twice but it still hasn’t hit home. Maybe later
I can't really fault the quality of songwriting on here, which is consistently vibrant and impassioned, but reggae is considerably out of my wheelhouse and seldom a genre of music I'd ever actively listen to.
Of the three Bob Marley albums I have had so far this was the one that clicked with me least. Interested to note that there are no cuts from this album on his definitive greatest hits compilation, and the studio version of No Woman, No Cry sounds a bit flat compared to the live version.
That magical bpm where everything just slows down.
Love Bob Marley, but in small doses. One or two songs at a time, he's great. A whole album in one shot? You begin to notice how similar in tempo every song is. "No Woman, No Cry" is a stand out, the rest of it was good, but not dynamic enough to really make me notice.
I have said what I am going to say about Reggae, as I am not a super fan. But its Marley and this is a solid 'good'.
It wasnt until recently that I realised that many of Bob Marley's tracks are protest songs. Which I realise is quite dimwitted of me given that one of the tracks in thus album is actually called "Rebel Music'. But i feel like this is partly because reggae has such a laid back feel and the majority of Bob Marley's songs that have reached mainstream success are tracks like "No Woman, No Cry" which took on a new life in the 90s with the Fugees. I like the revolutionary feel of this album. I just wish it wasn't because Bob Marley was feeling as though he, his friends and family were all being treated like second class citizens. (3.000)
I think reggea is prety cool but damn does it all sounds the fucking same. This album is no exception but Bob Marley and his gang are all talented people so I enjoyed it. The version of "no woman, no cry" that everybody knows is actually a live rendition of the song. And its way better than the version on the album. Crazy shit.
natty dread gain
Good stuff mon
Liked this one more than I thought I would, quite a lot of complexity to the music and some good grooves, really liked Lively Up Yourself
meh, bob marley halt. kulturell bestimmt sehr relevant aber für mich immer das gleiche
Algo tiene Bob que aburre, aunque su mood es delicioso
Reggae will probably never be my thing, but this was a darn pleasant album. Musically this was more interesting to me than Catch a Fire, and lyrically this is a lot deeper than I may have thought at first. That being said, I still just...don't want to listen to reggae at 9:00am on a Tuesday. Mr. Marley gets a hug and a thumbs up from me. Fave tracks: - Lively Up Yourself - Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) - Revolution
Reggae works for me as background music, but whenever I try to actively listen to it my brain just shuts down. No hate for Bob tho.
Zen
3.5
не зашёл по вайбику
Greaaatt!! Never listened to it I don't think
listened on a run, great summer vibes
Good album. Love the rhythms. I’m more familiar with the live versions so not hearing what I was expecting was weird.
I still don't feel like any Bob Marley album can beat Exodus (from what I've heard so far.) But there's a nice mix of styles on here with an overall nocturnal overtone, which is nice, as reggae can get fairly repetitive some times. One element from one song that I really like is probably the crunchy bass tone in the song "Natty Song." Out of 3 Bob Marley songs I've gotten so far I rate it the second best (Catch a Fire being 3rd.) I probably will return to this one in due time, I think I will appreciate this one with a second listen when I will be in a different frame of mind. High 3 star album. Highlight Song/s: "Natty Dread"
Irie 🍁
Not as good as the earlier Wailers Albums
Fine, but reggae is not my jam
Another solid album from the reggae master. High 3+, maybe a 4.
I hate to disappoint my 15-year-old self and his deeply mortifying Bob Marley phase, but Natty Dread fell a little flat for me. I liked it fine, but don't anticipate coming back to it. 3.5 stars.
Je m'attendais à mieux
i liked it
6/10 How disappointing. Even No Woman No Cry felt flat. It's quality reggae, but it constantly fell out of my focus and into the background. I expected a lot more ...
Marley is always good. But not always interesting. 3/5
A huge change of pace. I respect the legendary status of Bob Marley and the reggae vibes are incredibly chill, but the whole album was a bit too relaxed for my everyday listening. Still, I saved 3 classic tracks including 'No Woman No Cry' for my playlist. A solid 3/5.
Nice vibe, det bliver nok ikke mere groovie reggae end det. Men ikke helt noget der ramte mig. Men jeg lavede mad til det, og man kommer bare i god stemning af det.
I don't enjoy listening to reggae but I guess this is okay. I won't seek it out again.
Love Bob Marley. This album was more of the same from him. Though I like other projects of his better. songs I liked: lively up yourself 3/5
I enjoy a fair bit of Reggae and I know Bob is the quintessential artist in the genre but he’s never been my favorite.
not a fan but i know this was important so respect and credit where credit is due
Listen this album would slap on a beach, but in the Suburbs in VA while working? Not as much. Don't get me wrong it's not bad at all, a vibe to be sure. Just not my preferred genre for everyday. -S Tier- -A Tier- No Woman No Cry So Jah S'eh -B Tier- Lively Up Yourself -C Tier- Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) Rebel Music (3 O'clock Roadblock) Natty Dread Revolution -D Tier- Bend Down Low Talkin' Blues Am-A-Do -F Tier-
standouts for me are definitely "no woman, no cry" and "them belly full (but we hungry)." crazy to still see so many parallels from the struggles of the 70s and 80s and today. feels like we've made so much progress but still a lot left to do Cost of living gets so high Rich and poor they start to cry Now the weak must get strong They say, Oh, what a tribulation
Good relaxing music style.
Ok
I hated this way less than I expected. A whole album is a lot to ask here, however. Just not for me, but again, I can appreciate it.
If i owned a cafe on an island, i would play this all day everyday. Good background music, very chill.
There's more variation here than on Catch a Fire and Exodus but it's also a lot limper than those two albums.
I'm a fan of the more elaborate production of this album, but for me, this is a solid reggae album and little more. (3.5)
mid 3.5. Deve ser um bom álbum para os amantes de reggae raiz, eu não sou um deles.
it's bob Marley. you know what you'll get and you know it will be good
Very powerful lyrics, very straightforward. Combined with the mystical music and powerful reggae elements makes this album so engaging and special, it feels like a revolution the whole time.
I'm not a Reggae guy, but if I'm forced to listen, it damn well better be Bob Marley. My main issue with the genre is that I can't handle a full album of it. 1 or 2 songs at the most is all I need. Anything mkre than that and the repetition sets in. I don't like repetition. I don't think I've ever heard a single Reggae song that sounds different from any other, and it may be the only genre I can say that about. But this is good, maybe even great if you're a fan. It has the lyrics, it had Bob's voice, the guitars are good, it's chill, it has the usual harmonies and rhythms. But yeah, a single song from this album is enough for me.
I thought Natty Dread would be yet another album to throw me into the mind of Bob Marley and The Wailers but if anything if felt quite underwhelming and honestly a bit too laid back with its' style and presence. I already wasn't as huge into Catch a Fire as many others were but this album felt lacking in a lot of ways even down to the consistent style and swagger Bob and company usually have. This album felt surprisingly all over the place as the "weird experimentation" curse continues to strike even the most safe and consistent of groups like Bob Marley and The Wailers. I feel this album really soars in the first 4 tracks and then afterwards takes one hell of a nosedive down as it struggles to find any sort of solid footing or even instrumentation past that fact. I don't think this is bad, but it is severely lacking a lot of the charm and style you'd come to expect from this group at this point.
A benchmark album from the undisputed titan of reggae. Much of this album retains that classic, jaunty reggae sound, which works well for shorter songs but gets very samey when the songs toe-tap past the 5 minute mark. There's just enough variety to make a listener recognize each song is different, but the whole album, in general, sounds like an extended jam session building off a groove that slowly evolves over time. Perfect for the jovial collaborative atmosphere of this album I suppose. I would say I remembered and liked quite a few songs, though just as many went in one ear and out the other for me. Key Tracks: Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry, Bend Down Low
Firmly believe at this point that the authors don't know 1001 different artists. Despite that, I always got time for Bob Marley, so ima go 3/5.
dio je fire dio je mid
Cerramos la semana con Bob Marley, siendo ya éste el segundo disco de él que aparece por acá. No me gustó tanto como Exodus pero cumple su función de funcionar como música de fondo. Nos vemos el martes, gente.
Reggae isn't my kind of music, this is decent enough but nothing to write home about. 2.5/5.
#951. No Woman No Cry is one of the small few reggae songs I like instead of finding terribly annoying, so I'm going to give this one an extra star because I'm in a good mood today. 3/5: fine
Eh
6/10 - not vintage Bob Marley but it's still Bob Marley
I respect the cultural significance of this album and I do enjoy the genre more broadly, perhaps in missing a decent sub I'm not enjoying this as much as I thought I would
OK. 3/5
Reminds me of my stoner brother. Good vibes for the morning.
This isn't my usual style at all. In fact, I was dreading listening to this album. I think it was my preconceived notion of Bob Marley that I really underestimated just how good of a front man and music he and his band could create. The lyrics were much more socially conscious than I expected, the beats much more varied that I thought they would be, and the songs much more distinct. I really was worried that the album would be really one note, as that plus a prevalent bass can literally make me fall asleep, but it held my interest all the way through. That being said, I must admit that I probably won't come back to it and it will never really be part of my rotation. Reggae just isn't something that has ever clicked with me and grows old fast, though this has been really listenable on the whole. Shout out to Bob Marley though - I get why this one is important and why he is considered a great and revolutionary and want to acknowledge that he brought a voice to these struggles. For that reason it's a 5/5 album, but for my personal record, I have to go 3/5. Playlist Song: Revolution. Really caught my ear.
Natty my kinda ting
As far as reggae goes, not really forte. I can appreciate Bob Marley, his message and his influence. I do enjoy some of his bigger songs on the occasion.
That’s reggae alright.
I usually love Bob Marley but just wasn't in the mood for Reggae.
I didn't hate this album. I think I might've heard it historically as my ex used to have it on vinyl. Not to bad, certainly not the whole RAAAAASTAmon thing I was thinking I was going to hear
While most of the album reinforced my feeling that reggae is not a genre I naturally connect with, Lively Up Yourself stood out strongly to me. Its bluesy guitar work and deep, groove-driven bass left the biggest impression. The album also made me realize how central the bass is to reggae music.
Sólido, buenos músicos pero no banco tanto el reggae
I mean just reggae, soft one though. When you want to bounce your head or pretend to drink something on a wodden porch on the coast
Solid Bob album, but nothing stood out to me on this one.
First of all i'm not the biggest Reggae fan. But of course I know Bob Marley. I know most of his singles that charted long long time ago. This album is probably one of the best Reagae albums that was ever released. And I mean for the Reggae fans. But I don't feel this album. For me it doesn't have any outstanding tracks. Sorry about that. I don't skipped a single track but I was happy that the album was finished. It's just not my kind of music. 3/5
I can recognize it’s good. I just have trouble enjoying reggae. I tried.
Great reggae rock listen
Bouncy bouncy!!!!
Basically repeating myself here, but I’m not ever complaining about listening to some Bob Marley. But, this one is lacking the recognizable songs. Still worth a three.
Buena vibra pero era muy mala persona aparentemente así que ya no está tan bueno
This is much better more fun, but doesn’t reach the highs of exodus. Pretty hard to beat stuff there, so this pales unfortunately. But it’s still great and a lot of fun.
Prefer Exodus. 3/5.
--Lively Up Yourself...cool guitar tone throughout --No Woman, No Cry...TIL writing credit for this went to a friend of Marley's named Vincent Ford. I prefer the live version but this is still nice --Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)...a good groove with an important message --Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock)...another solid groove but a little long --So Jah Seh...a lot going on here but it all fits together nicely. head bopper --Natty Dread...we keep the vibe going --Bend Down Low...that organ (?) tone is tops. oh, I'm definitely living in sin, Bob --Talkin' Blues...the vibe continues but we're starting to feel repetitive. but we're almost done --Revolution...I appreciate that Mr. Marley appreciated backup singers. they're responsible for a lot of the flavors that make this LP entertaining
6.5/10, одна норм песня, вайб 7/10, звучание 5/10
Lindo álbum, pocas canciones destacaron pero en general muy buena la estructura del álbum
I like Bob Marley and reggae in general, but I couldn't listen to this on repeat ;)
Album 180. Natty Dread (https://open.spotify.com/album/2fUrVWDYASjthLVsVH53zP?si=ZYJkdLaRTRK6wrl4-rZoNA) — Bob Marley & The Wailers (1974) I can't stand to repeat that I love reggae and that's one of the revelations in this music journey. That's not Exodus, but still a good one. 3/5 Liked: — No Woman No Cry — Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) — Talkin' Blues
good summer stuff here
2 Singles
3.5/5, hard to hate
7/10 Completely inoffensive and pleasant to listen to. In my opinion not his best.
Songs all sound pretty similar, but they are pretty good
1001 albums to hear before you are (natty) d(r)ead 83# Not the banger Bob Marley accostumed me to with exodus but it's still nice and chill with a major hit dont cry
Very historically significant and some of the deep tracks are actually pretty good, but if I never ever hear Bob Marley again I'd be fine with that, really.
Was ok and i don't even like reggae. 3.2
Lively Up Yourself - 4/5 No Woman, No Cry - 4/5 Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) - 3.5/5 Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block) - 3.5/5 So Jah S'eh - 3.5/5 Natty Dread - 3/5 Bend Down Low - 3.5/5 Talkin' Blues - 3.5/5 Revolution - 3.5/5 A very laid back album. Reggae usually isn't my go to but it's nice for when you want to kick back and do nothing. Or smoke a joint or two. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry
fine i guess
Not a big fan of reggae but really appreciated the chill and relaxing vibes when I needed them. However, I'm not sure I'd know this album from any other reggae album.
Classic Bob. Such a great vibe to the record, but would hardly play it over Exodus, as this tailed off a bit towards monotony the end. Much stronger start.
Takes me back.
didn’t expect to know some of the songs? damn. 3.4
Island vibes, great feelgood music, not something I will keep on rotation but it's not a bad album by any means. Standout songs are "No Woman No Cry" and "Natty Dread". I'll give it a solid 6/10. Definitely above average but nowhere near my favorite albums on this list.
Not my favourite of theirs. Rastaman vibration or exodus are more interesting imo. But still a lot of big tunes on this one.
Good, relax, tipo para estar en la playa recostado. Bue es bob marley entonces por supuesto es ese estilo bastante playero.
Enjoyable. 3.5
First listen
vibras chill, me gusto, no suelo escuchar reggae salvo alguna que otra canción pero repetiría algunos temas. mi fav: Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)
That was OK.
My grad today: "In high school, I was a mix of the Ramones and Bob Marley" ⭐⭐⭐/5 Highlights: "No Woman No Cry," "Revolution"
i appreciate bob marley and his contributions to beach town culture. however, I am listening to this many hundreds of miles from the beach.
Reggae has never been my preferred genre, but this was a pleasant surprise. The album lulled me into a sense of relaxation. There’s not a lot of excitement on the album, in fact I’d say there is almost none at all. The beats and backing stay consistent throughout the track, and there’s little melodic interest. And yet, it’s a calming album with good social commentary. It’s not a good album to me for active, intent listening because it lacks the bells and whistles I like from an album. But as background music, it’s pretty nice. 6/10.
no es mi estilo pero estaba chulo
First ever time listening to Bob Marley album in full and I was pleasantly surprised no woman no cry, obviously hurt beforehand solid first effort and look forward to listening to more didn’t have much to compare to
A legend of his craft. It’s interesting hearing the “origins” of my current favorite genre in music. Mad respect to Mr. Marley. It is 4/20 so listening to this today felt very fitting. I can vibe to every song but I know he has better music out there
Clásico de Bob marley
Fun but didn’t like this as much as I thought I would
Not bad, well suited for background music. Familiar with this great man's hits but I rarely would listen to a full album from the back catalogue, so I appreciated getting this one today.
Un álbum muy chill pero que me ha gustado
Pretty good but way overplayed.
Repetitivo, me gustaron 2 o 3 pero me aburrí al final 😬
no woman no cry
A solid 7/10. I’m not really into reggae, but I understand how important Bob Marley is to music overall. That said, this one is still a smooth listen. It flows well, it’s warm, and easy to sit through. It just doesn’t fully connect with me the whole time. I respect it more than I actually come back to it… but there are definitely a few tracks that stand out.
This is probably my favorite reggae album, I think it starts really strong with the tracks “lively up yourself”, “no woman no cry”, and “them belly full”. Those songs are awesome and also all time greats for the genre as a whole. Sadly I think it sorta just lingers for the rest of the album. Like it has highs and lows but for the most part the rest of the album is pleasant and doesn’t over stay its welcome but doesn’t bring a lot else to the party. Still a solid album through and through.
Historically I have a somewhat low tolerance for Reggae. I don't dislike it, I just can't listen to it for that long. Let's see if 42 minutes is too long ;P Eh. It was fine.
Not bad, but gets pretty repetitive and old after 20 minutes. I thought Catch A Fire was exponentially better. Definitely not Marley’s best work in my opinion.
6/10
Not my style at the moment
Muy hermoso el album
This started off pretty good. The nuances in the rhythm tracks were really interesting. I'm certain the version of no woman no cry I am familiar with is a different recording. Which made it feel weird to hear. At some point after track 4 or 5 I started to find it all just too similar and any interesting nuance felt like a nuance I was already familiar with. By the end I just wasn't bothered. Which was a bit of a shame. But at least it wasn't just off beat guitars for an hour.
Nice vocals, album is a vibe but not necessarily my vibe
Very good but far from Marley’s best album. 3 stars. Fave track - lively up.
(3.5)
Very good reggae, though there's better. Still, very good. BUT: reggae is a genre with a pretty narrow texture. The tempo, the feel, the production aesthetic stay remarkably consistent even across its best work. I can't imagine listening to reggae day in and day out. In the field of reggae, this might be 4 stars. In the field of music, it's a 3. (Side note: wow, the live version of "No Woman No Cry" is so much better than the album version, which I had never heard until now. If you have somehow not heard the live version, do yourself a favor and give it a listen.)
A fun reggae album full of all time classics (at least to my very limited reggae knowledge). However, I think it lacks the energy and pop and even sonic qualities that the Live! album has? So i really wasnt feeeeeling this. Cant give it more than a 3 for that. Perfectly respectable, but not making me feel more than okay.
Reminds me strongly of my neighbours (this is not a good thing) Eats honestly I see the appeal
This is the second Bob Marley and the Wailers album I've gotten, after getting Exodus a few months ago. As I said on that album's review, I grew up listening to Legend, the compilation album, but (other than No Woman No Cry) none of the songs from Natty Dread were on that album, so this will be a lot of new stuff for me. • Lively Up Yourself isn't on Legend, but I do know this song already. It's got a great groove, and I love the unison horn, bass and keys line that comes in around the three minute mark. • No Woman No Cry is a very nice sounding song • Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) has some really cool stuff happening with the bass, and I really like the keys • So Jah S'eh is a really cool sounding song, it has some awesome sounding hits throughout it • Bend Down Low is another really good song, the arpeggiating guitar/bass has a very uplifting sound This was a nice listen, but it definitely isn't as good as Exodus. I can see why there weren't many tracks from Natty Dread on Legend. Still, this is a Bob Marley album so it's not bad by any means. Favourite song: Lively Up Yourself
Enjoyed my time with it. Wild hearing the recorded “no woman no cry”, never heard that before. It doesn’t come close to exodus in my opinion.
Okay as background music with a couple tracks that stick out.
Prende y pasalo por favor
The production on this album is top-notch and the lyrics unfortunately are timely. This is one of my first exposures to reggae and who better than with Bob Marley to introduce me to the world of reggae. With this album, I am encouraged to go forward into reggae! RIP Bob Marley Highlights: No Woman No Cry Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock) So Jah S'eh
Listened on a long car drive and was a good relaxing choice. Likes: Lively Up Yourself; No Woman No Cry
5/10
Not entirely my thing but I still enjoyed the vibe.
Likes: Jammy, chill vibe; instruments are usually doing something interesting, rhythms, timeless lyrics Dislikes: sonic aesthetic doesn’t do much for me; arrangements are pretty sparse Overall, not my vibe and probably won’t listen to it much, but hard to find anything to objectively criticize. Good jams, for people who dig it
Nice reggae album, first and last tracks are the highlights!
I enjoyed this. I was surprised by No Woman No Cry being a very different version than the one I was familiar with.
Not my favorite album ever but I see why people would like it. I liked the first song and some of the others were pretty catchy, but as a whole I don’t care for reggae music.
A solid listen. Bon is a classic.
This is #day592 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's been a crazy 589 days since I last got a Bob Marley record. Listening to Natty Dread makes me want to revisit that first one I got. I feel like I might not have started this journey with the same open-mindedness I have now. I like the instrumentation; there's a lot of air in between, and a deep groove that keeps you swaying from the first song to the last. And then there's "No Woman, No Cry," possibly Marley's most well-known track. This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day593.
Not a big reggae fan but i can recognize this is a pretty classic album.
pretty chill but not my type
Reggae não é um estilo que me atrai muito, no entanto consigo respeitar o trabalho produzido por Bob Marley & The Wailers. Não tenho o interesse de ouvir novamente, mas foi uma boa experiência. Destaques: Revolution Rating: 3
groovy
Revolution
This is very pleasant but faded into the background, not a bad thing and a good album to work to
Carribean with a little jazz, keyboard, horns and different artists. Includes No Woman No Cry.
Reggae just isn't really my thing. Maybe I am not chill enough. I respect it for its place in music history and culture, but I would never seek it out.
I don't mind a bit of reggae, and this was very enjoyable. Not quite enough to get on the 'to buy' list, but I wouldn't be adverse to hearing it again; in the car, during the Summer perhaps. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Cool ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 262 Already owned : 60 Purchased : 15 To buy list : 1 Nope : 186
exodus the real banger album but i do love bob marley
I like this album! It is good . Bob Marley has never been a huge favorite of mine but he is good .
Album #57: Natty Dread - Bob Marley & The Wailers Genre (W): Reggae, reggae rock No singles. I have not listened to this album previously. Thoughts?: I love the musicianship of the album. Some of the lyrics are also well written by Marley and the other songwriters credited. Some of the songs are a bit redundant, but the songs that are listed as my favorites make up for those. Favorite songs: No Woman, No Cry, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), Bend Down Low, Talkin’ Blues
Not bad, actually a good listen for background music.
Quite good.
