Reviews (page 8 of 12)

Reggae isn’t really my thing, but I didn’t hate it.

Day 208 Found it quite repetitive after a while but plenty enjoyable Highlights No woman no cry Them belly fully So jah s’eh

Enjoyed this. Maybe not as much as Exodus. Didn't realise the version of no woman, no cry is not the album version either. Things you learn...

Not a fan of reggae but enjoyable to listen to

Don't know if I just wasn't in the mood for this or what, but I just couldn't get into it like his other albums I've heard. Am-A-Do, Rebel Music and Talkin' Blues stood out. Ok. After the full listen got into it more. Moved from a 2.5 to a 3.

Fun. Easy to listen to. Did know he was so man + woman.

Marley "is a vibe," as the kids would say. A Jamaican antidote to the darkness of the world. I can't help but feel better by the end of the album than I did at the beginning.

Not the biggest reggae fan but it was alright.

If you told me that this was the same time 10 times over, i would believe you.

Chill, a good listen but nothing exciting

I've never been a big fan of reggae, but hey, if I'm going to listen to it, it may as well come from the most well known and respected artist that did it. I enjoyed this album. Not an album I'd relisten to often, but I did like every song on here.

Está bueno. Me viene bien como música para escuchar mientras trabajo, pero no conecté realmente con algo más profundo.

An easy-listening reggae album with a legendary song - No Woman, No Cry. Them Belly Full was also a great piece to listen to. However, just a bit too much along the same lines. I don't know why - but No Woman, No Cry sounded a bit rushed than the rather popular version of his, I believe.

As reggae as you can get. A bit short. I wouldn't mind listening to this more.

Good album overall. Kind of stripped down, compared to other lively live or later versions I’ve heard. Great mood setter though! 3.5/5.0

I prefer the live version of No Woman No Cry and this didn't quite grab me as much as Catch a Fire

Had this on while doing house keeping as background music. Not my favorite Bob Marley album. I didn’t save a single track to my reggae playlist.

I liked this! I’m not familiar with Reggae but this was a nice introduction to that genre. The overly political nature of this style of music is definitely unique.

Bob Marley can do no wrong - another excellent album. That said, this wasn't as strong for me as some of his other stuff, especially Catch a Fire. Some great songs on here, but as a whole not my favorite of his. Would revisit though! Top Songs: Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry, Am-A-Do

Ihan ok, hittejä löytyy. Bassolinjat hauskoja, vaihtelevat kovasti ja logiikkaa on vaikea tajuta, mutta silti svengi pysyy.

#276/1001. I should probably stop hating reggae and buy the t-shirt with Che Guevara's face with the text Bob Marley.

Overall a good album can play it when I have ppl over for chilling

I don't think it's for me. There are some good songs though. I like the lyrics, I understand the message and Bob has a very nice singing voice but musically it feels slow sometimes and like it's dragging, which makes sense because it's reggae, but I guess I'm not in that head space to listen to reggae. It sounds more like background music to me. But I do have respect for Bob Marley, the music he provided and the significance he has had. Perhaps I will revisit it some day. Standouts: So Jah S'eh, Natty Dread, Bend Down Low, Talkin' Blues, Revolution

Lively Up Yourself No Woman, No Cry Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock) Bend Down Low Good but not great.

Chill but none of these songs really speak to me... Might need a re-listen but didn't immediately strike me as a favorite. Sorry goat :/

밥 말리당 좋네유

I feel like you have to be in the right mood for an entire album of reggae. I stayed in the mood for about 4 tracks. No Woman No Cry is really good. By the end, I was just bored. 3.5

It's alright. Not a big reggae fan TBH.

It's Bob Marley, it's pretty good as most of his stuff is, but it mostly sounds the same as most of his work? For someone who isn't super into reggae but knows all the Bob Marley hits that everyone does, it's a pleasant enough listen but not too much really jumps out at me here. This jauntier version of No Woman No Cry takes some getting used to and probably still greatly prefer the more famous live version. Standout track that I didn't know is probably Them Belly Full. Backup vocals provided by the I-Threes are probably one of my favorite musical elements of his sound and they show up in some cool ways here. Nothing wrong with this at all but not a standout.

Classic, so much that it feels stereotyped to my ears

It was nice to drive around listening to this. I don't know how often I can see myself back to this, though. I'll probably stick with Legend for my Bob Marley needs.

Bob Marley is always great....I am only a so-so fan of reggae. Solid three stars

One of my friends in high school used to say, “You cannot deny…no woman, no cry” usually doing an impersonation of Yoda. Yeah, we were a weird bunch… Anyway, I think I can admit that I’m a Bob Marley’s Greatest Hits kind of reggae fan. In its proper place, time and mindset it’s a vibe, but not what I would put on all the time for a relisten. 3⭐️

I like reggae, I don’t always like Bob Marley. But I like this. Avoids the over production of his later albums and the bass and drums have their deserved place at the heart of songs. They pulse away and his undoubtedly powerful voice has the space to breath. This also contains the definitive version of no woman no cry

Not a big fan of reggae music, but still a good album lyrically nonetheless.

Pas mal

g bien aimé

Thought I would enjoy this more, but somehow, the surrounding songs made me enjoy no woman no cry ✨less✨. I think because it all sounded quite similar.

not his best but pretty solid

I like it!

Solid but repetitive

Два альбома Боба Марли и Альбом Полис за неделю - это слишком. Сам альбом неплохой, но с музыкальной точки зрения такой же, как и предыдущий.

Nice album for a slow morning. I enjoyed the experience. However, I think Bob Marley has better albums than this one. I really appreciated the sunshine this music brought me in the middle of winter.

Lively up yourself Them Belly Full Rebel music Natty dread Bend down low Revolution (!) В целом какой то пассивный движняк, под хорошее расслабленное настроение 5/10

Turns out I really like Bob Marley

On some songs, I have no problem understanding his lyrics...others he might as well be speaking Mandarin. The live version of No Woman, No Cry is infinitely better than the studio version. Bob Marley is unequivocally better live than in studio.

Songs sound great. Even if they weren’t my favorite Marley tunes.

Cool album, didn't really make me feel much though I really liked Talkin' Blues though for some reason, and No Woman No Cry is also iconic

Tough one to rate for me. I'll certainly never go back to this album, but as a piece of art it's obviously very well-done and culturally significant. Bob Marley is also more punk than I thought. Guy talks about wanting to bomb a church.

probably the first capital R reggae record ive sunk my teeth into. very cool type of sound, gets to be uniquely bouncey and playful, and just really *slow* but not in any sort of bad way. some of these songs just straight up lower my heart rate the beats are so relaxing. i think if i had a rocking chair and a porch where i could smoke a doobskie without an ounce of paranoia it would probably multiply my enjoyment. favorite song is So Jah S'eh, maybe Revolution

I’ve always found Bob Marley’s hits very good and his other songs not as interesting, and this album was no different. I had never heard the studio version of No Woman No Cry, and I can see why the live version is the most well known version. It was an alright album, but not my favorite.

Classic, but there are better ones

I didn’t respond to this album very much. 2.5 stars, anyways moving on

2.8 stars?

I really don’t enjoy reggae, but at least this is authentic as opposed to the awful shit pumped out by UB40 or The Police. Not my bag, but not (Natty) dreadful.

There are hits here. Overall a very fine music with the ability to summon chill vibes and the heat of summer to your home.

I own a pair of Bob Marley weed pants but I've both never worn them and never listened to Bob Marley so let's see how this goes. Yeah I can get down to this. Tis the vibe methinks. Very vibey very carefree I suppose this is the first reggae record I've ever heard as well. I think I'm more of the reggae variety than the ska type. Or maybe it was just white boy ska that got me. Who knows. The lyrics on Spotify do not match what he's saying it's kinda funny. Preach Bob women should never cry. Speak on it Mr. Marley. I don't think I have the vocabulary to really understand this tbh. But I can definitely enjoy it. So harmonica work okay. I really like this it's very chill on the surface but the lyrics are actually goated to be honest. Favourite: Lively Up Yourself Least favourite: I liked em all

Well I think this album opens up actually with two really good "Lively Up Yourself" and "No Woman No Cry", and ends with my next favorite song "Revolution"... Pretty much everything in the middle just was okay to me. There is a certain grit I liked to some songs, but as I'm not really drawn to reggae as a whole, and this album, for the most part, doesn't rise above that. I did however like the bonus track "Am-A-Do". I kind of wished it was on the album 7.3 ★★★½

The hit is great, the rest is good for reggae, but reggae is generally not my thing. 3.5 stars

Not so batty for this one. Bob Marley is a cool dude but I could easily be Natty Dead without ever having listened to it. Key tracks are Them Bellyful and No Woman No Cry although it’s not the definitive live version. Am A Do with the catchy ‘do it with ye bad self’ hook is the main other good song but apparently it’s not even on the original track list. I’d definitely stick to Exodus and Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley as my essential Bob Marley.

Interesting, but wouldn’t want to listen to it again. It’s a little repetitive and I’m realizing that I just don’t really like reggae. Enjoyed “Rebel Music,” “Lively Up Yourself” and “Talkin’ Blues” the most.

marley. chill. groove.

3.5 - pretty good album

Not even close to being his top album, let alone a top album. Fondness for Bob stops it being a 2 or a 1 star entry.

Good vibe and message, bit monotonous at times and not fully my genre

This was fun but not my favorite of bob's albums

'73 and he was singing about the cost of living, we've not come very far

I had really high expectations for Bob and this album, to potentially discover some gems I hadn't heard. Unfortunately, the eureka moment never quite came for me. The first track, Lively Up Yourself, set us up for some guitar and brass creativity that didn't shine as much in the rest of the album. No Woman No Cry - obviously a classic - just didn't hit in the same way as the presumably more commonly played soulful live version. I hate to say this Bob, but many of the songs did just meld in the background for me.

It’s not at all surprising that this album made this list, and I’ve been expecting it since I started. I admire Bob Marley and his music, but it was never something that I was super into. All of the songs were a solid 3/5, but there were no exceptions. It’s a good album, and definitely needs to be on anyone’s list for the 1001 objectively best albums of all time. But subjectively (for me), it’s not great.

Album very chill vibe. Also a very reggae and old vibe. But quite long songs some good but some just too long. My fav song of the album So Ja S’eh

It's OK. Al lot of the same old, same old

แอบเริ่ด ฟังแล้วนึกถึงแช็คกี้55555555

Some classic tunes, Lively Up, No Woman, etc.

Hate to give this three stars, but it feel just a little flat compared to some of what Bob Marley achieved. There's not much in the way of valuable material here that wasn't superseded with a superior live version the following year.

Not a sound I'd listen to for the whole album, but nice

I enjoyed listening to something different. Not something I would usually listen to.

Wwwwww

About what I expected. Nothing life changing here

Buen álbum, fantástica guitarra pero no es mi estilo. Una vez llevas 4 canciones, me empieza a costar

There are some great songs on here but struggled to keep my attention on it for a whole album.

*See my previous opinions on the music of Bob Marley.

I wish I liked Reggae a bit more! Objectively this is a great album and I enjoy protest music so that's also a big plus but it's just not a style that I find challenging or that I would sit up in my seat to listen more deeply to. I'd give 3.8 if you could be more precise.

This is our third Bob Marley album and, while I kind of enjoy him (in small doses maybe?), Natty Dread felt like diminishing returns. Not helped by the fact that Exodus and Catch a Fire had better selections of songs. Highlight: "No Woman, No Cry."

This does a pretty much perfect job of hitting the vibe it’s going for. Feels like the perfect album to sit on the beach and smoke. That’s just not really my vibe

First time listening to a full Reggae album, couldn’t fully get into some of the songs in the album, each song sounded too similar

me when i do the weed xDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Niet afgeluisterd, reggae is niet mn ding

It was great. Standout tracks: -Livley up yourself -Rebel music -Talking Blues -Am-a-Do Least favorite tracks: N/A Listened in it's entirety while working out outside. Upper body day. Cold outside, album made me wish for spring/summer

not my genre, still very enjoyable

Nice and have to listen again, also not my preferred style of music, a lot of good songs on here though

Having fun at the Ragu festival! (Old Sandler reference.) Marley was obviously a genius, maybe a prophet?, and he deserves all the praise he gets. I can enjoy reggae but usually only somewhat specific circumstances. At my desk on a cold January morning doesn't really fall into those circumstances. I don't think I had heard this version of "No Woman, No Cry" before. I guess I'm just familiar with the live version? I like it. "Talkin' Blues" is the most non-reggae Marley song I've ever heard. With different drums it would not sound like reggae at all to me.

First time listening to a whole Marley album. Love the bass. Overall underwhelming though. If it's your thing, it's your thing!

Not a reggae fan. But I did enjoy this more than I expected. Went back to listen to some of my faves as soon as the initial listen was over. I suppose Bob Marley is a legend for a reason. Would be perfect tunes for a sunny arvo with bevs. 3.5/5

beginning of reggae

🥇them belly full (but we hungry) 🥈natty dread 🥉bend down low HM: no woman no cry, talkin blues

Didn’t know much about this album before listening but did learn that it was the debut of No Woman No Cry which was cool. Aside from that I thought the front half of the album was pretty bland and picked up in the second half starting around the title track of Natty Dread. Would give a 3.5 if starts could be halved

A classic Marley album. Never realized this is the original version of No Woman No Cry.

Not really my thing, but I can appreciate it. Easy listening music; I vibed with a few tracks.

First Bob Marley I’ve listened to, pretty good

NO WOMAN YES CRY

Decent soundtrack for people watching

There are songs on this that are iconic, and part of the zeitgeist... But generally it doesn't vibe with me.

That was fine. A couple of good songs, No Woman No Cry is inferior to the live version that every student had on a copied CD in the mid-2000s.

couple of good songs, “jazzier” then i thought. favourite song was probably “no woman no cry”

Yep, I’m definitely a greatest hits girl when it comes to Bob Marley. I start off liking it but it gets a bit grating after a while. Definitely best enjoyed in Caribbean climes. Also, the version of No Woman No Cry with the awful synth sound is terrible compared to the famous version

My first Reggae album. I love the base lines, the instrumentals are delightful. I really like Bob Marley's voice as well. However the repetitive lyrics and melodies aren't for me. Found myself distracted and zoned out a lot. Favorite track: Talkin' Blues Least Favorite track: Bend Down Low

Cowboy bebop coded

Didn't really like this one as much as Catch a Fire, honestly? I don't like "No Woman, No Cry" all that much and everything else was just fine. I did really like the backing vocals on the last song though!

I never really listen to Bob Marley but I always believed in him. Easy going reggae full of love and peace and emotion. My slow morning was beautiful.

Really enjoying this listen. I've never heard the studio version of 'no woman no cry' or most of the songs on this album. Was not expecting harmonicas, almost country-like in some songs.

i don’t really listen to reggae so i can’t really give this an insightful rating. sounds like i’m working at 808

It's catchy and danceable music with a message. I get the mass appeal. It's just not my particular style of music.

3/5, not exactly my cup of tea; i liked first few songs, but they are a ll a bit to similar

Reggae is not really my bag. & I really tried. You get a lot of that down Cornwall, they love it there. They love to sing Bob Marley hits around a campfire or a festival or a lock in, or when the sun rises after a mini rave on the beach. There was a lotta love. And they are genuinely quite beautiful moments .. for everyone else but me. I felt like Mark Corrigan at rainbow rhythms trying my hardest to love it cos I fancied one of my hippie friends. "For fuck sake they're doing Three Little Birds again". I am one depressing fuck. Fair play to the reggae fans, you're a lot cooler than me. 5 / 10 Best track/s: Bend Down Low has a cool little harpsichord (?) tbf, I do quite like it.

Incrível que começa o álbum e já vem um sorriso de safadeza. Vibe boa. Álbum ok, gostosinho, o esperado do famoso Bob.

Some good songs. Would go back again.

I really liked this - very enjoyable and easy to listen to. Not quite as good as other Bob Marley albums I’ve had so far but still good - always happy with a reggae album to listen to.

it’s pretty good! i found myself dazing halfway through the album which is why it’s getting 3 stars. it’s not a standout but it’s an easy listen

Blind album. I am learning that there is a good amount of reggae i do not like, but at least I liked some songs.

Skankin 3.5

the music is so fun! i would’ve loved to be around when the album was first released

There are probably stronger Bob Marley albums in this list, but it's hard to be in a bad mood when his music is playing. Killer album name too. Top tracks: No Woman No Cry, Am-A-Do, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)

As a white man from Pennsylvania who went to Jamaica one time as a child, I feel like I have this special connection to Bob Marley and reggae, like I just get it more than most people. Jokes aside, I do enjoy a little reggae from time to time. Bob Marley is the only reggae musician most people can name and that's a shame cause there are some other really incredible artists out there, past and present. That said, Marley definitely contributed enough to the genre to warrant being it's biggest star. Natty Dread isn't my favorite album of his, or even his close to his strongest in my opinion, but there's still some interesting stuff going on.

Why is bro staring at me? Overall It's a solid Reggae album, but definitely not Bob Marley's strongest. There are iconic tracks like "No Woman No Cry" and some really groovy ones like "Them Belly Full," but nothing that keeps me coming back. 8/10.

Another classic from Bob Marley

Very familiar.

I like Marley, but this is just a good album.

It's Marley you know, always the same, always good. I thought about how reggae of these days is really an ambient music, specially when you don't understand the lyrics. Cosy and peaceful sound, kind of mantra voice. It's perfect to do something else like cooking or working. High 3.5

I think it’s really well produced, which is something that a lot of reggae is lacking. ESP for reggae produced in the 70s. That being said, I think it’s generally mid. Not haunting like some of the works of eek-a-mouse or filled with energy like a lot of dancehall hits. I just find it very basic.

It’s nice that the 10 minutes of reggae I can listen to at any one time included Lively Up Yourself and No Woman, No Cry

Нормальная музыка, но долго слушать её я не могу. Лучшая песня Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)

Bob Marley is a great artist, reggae just isn't my thing. Lively Up Yourself is a cool tune and No Woman, No Cry is a great one. The rest of this just didn't hit for me.

Really good reggae album.

Can't go wrong with most reggae, even if a lot of these songs have been played to death on the airways or been covered by multiple artists. Beach vibes...

Reggae saturday! Alltid soft med lite bobban, vad ska man säga? Men är inte No Woman lite överskattad?

Fin han är. Just denna kändes lite mid, men 3a och stark sådan.

Interesante, musica pa limpiar

It's sort of impossible to not feel good when listening to Bob Marley. It isn't my typical choice of genre but if you aren't nodding along to this, you might be dead inside

Ok so its nothing against Bob Marley or reggae music as a whole - surely this music has a time and place both in terms of actual history and venues where its best enjoyed - but this album sounds like every other Marley album. The music is enjoyable, the lyrics meaningful, and production is great but it's just not something I enjoy on the daily. I'd give it a 4 for uniqueness and styling but a 2 for daily listenability and lack of variety. 3/5

Not my taste but still a decent listen. Nothing special

This was honestly a first for me. I have never given a Bob Marley album a full front to back listen. I honestly found the latter half of the record to be the most catchy. Standout tracks would start with Rebel Music and the aforementioned Natty Dread. I enjoyed the groove and bouncy elements. A nice escape from the rainy November day in Chicago.

Lekker album. Met 'No woman no cry' op. Prima album maar ik ben geen super fan.

Bob Marley is good old reggae fun, vibes and fun regardless while keeping it simple.

I quite like Bob Marley but I found this album a bit meh. This version of No Woman No Cry is nowhere near as good as the live one.

Easy listening

bra vibe bomboclat

I like reggae. I liked this album 6/10

Standard Bob Marley music. Much easier to listen to than some other non-Marley albums, but not good enough to rise to a four star level. Three and a half stars for me.

We meet again, Bob Marley. Not much changed with you since last time, I see. No worries. Keep doing what you're doing. When we had The Fugees' version of 'No Woman, No Cry', I was surprised to read that according to Wiki, <<The lyric is sometimes misunderstood outside Jamaica to mean "if there is no woman, there is no reason to cry" >> but I asked around and indeed that's how many people interpret it! Are they just not listening to the rest of the lyrics ("everything's gonna be alright")? But I guess what's happening here is that exposure to Jamaican dialects is not that high, and we have a really strong grammatical filter for whatever dialects we know (c.f. me, marvelling at British pronunciations every few days), such that we don't even search for alternatives. Pretty cool if you think about it. Like, X makes no sense, but it's all I know, so it must be X.

This was ok, liked the first half much more than the second. First two songs were the standouts to me. Nice and chill but nothing really pulling me back to it.

It’s all right, not my favorite.

Is it a controversial opinion that this isn't Bob Marley's best? This felt very average. Maybe in the right setting it could be something you can groove to, but I feel like he has better, more powerful stuff elsewhere.

my least favorite of the three Bob Marley albums on this list, but it's Bob Marley and he's the face of reggae in popular consciousness for a reason. No Woman No Cry is the obvious standout but i also like the bluesy swing of Talkin' Blues deserves to be one of the 1001? i think it's fair to have 3 Bob Marley picks, even if this is the least significant of the bunch. sure. Uprising i think could also work

Love Bob. Nice early stuff. Before the Wailers

Alright, here’s an artist that’s hard to not know yet I’ve never sat down to listen to any actual albums. Once again another genre of music I’m not very well versed in but I definitely enjoyed listening to this very much. This recording sounds really nice, very warm sounding, and the music is all performed well. Love the background vocal arrangements! Definitely want to hear more from the catalogue especially learning that this is his seventh album!

First time listening to Bob Marley, and it was quite what I was expecting. Good, but after a few songs I’m itching for something different. Great in his style, just not mine.

I loved no woman, no cry! The rest wasn’t that exciting to me

It’s Bob Marley. 5/5 for cultural influence, 1/5 for personal tastes.

Sweet, but isn’t a bit of me really

Overly long in places but a good time nonetheless.

This makes for some good chilled background music

Cool sound!

Aika peruskauraa, hauskaa et soundeista kuulee vuoden 1974. Harvemmin kuultu No Woman No Cry -studioversio. Oman genrensä peruslevy, joka ei nyt ihan heti kuitenkaan kaipaa takaisin virtuaaliselle lautaselle pyörimään.

Reggae isn't my thing, but I'm warming up to it.

I always wondered why every compilation album had the live version of 'No woman no cry'. It sounds like a fast paced demo. I'm all about Monkey Island nostalgia. And Monkey 2 having Dread and Marley in a title is always a good sign. The horns were quite pleasant, but nothing else drew me to enjoy the album. Background music. 3 stars.

This album is like day 5 of your weeklong holiday to an island resort. You’re having a great time relaxing, drinking cocktails and going for lazy afternoon swims before having a cheeky pre-dinner nap. It’s a great time, but you have been doing this for almost a week now and you’re starting to get the itch to do something new. When you get back to work and your workmate Frank asks how the holiday was, nothing from day five will really stand out as something that Frank needs to be told about, but you’ll still look back at it fondly.

oh so this is where no woman no cry came from. also its the only highlight of the album. 3/5

Toujours un peu pareil le reggae mais je passe pas un mauvais moment, quelques instrus qui varient un peu qui restent sympa

Natty Dread is my third Bob Marley and the Wailers album, and I found it similar to the other two. Of course it's reggae and of course it's powerful. With songs like "No Woman, No Cry," "Revolution," and "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)," well, duh! Reggae has always included political meanings, but I don't think anybody ever did it better than Bob Marley and the Wailers, considering the chill beats keep you unaware while the political statements smack you in the head.

My initial thoughts: yep, this is definitely reggae. I mean, there's a reason that Bob Marley is often hailed as the king of reggae. He's great at it! But this album did start to feel a little repetitive after a while with roughly the same chill beats in roughly the same tempo.

sorry i don't smoke weed

Not really my style or genre, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Interesting tunes not my thing though

Pretty great for Reggae. Classical themes of oppression and strife, rebellion and resistance. Good vibing music.

C'est ben correct. 3.49 étoiles

Sorry Bob, I'm just not a reggae guy.

High 3 I like bob and i like his sound, its just a bit samey

Bob Marley toimii aina. Ei hänen paeas levynsä kuitenkaan. 3,25/5.

Me ha entretenido, a destacar la mítica "No woman no cry".

It's alright, not being a fan of reggae that much, it has some cool grooves

Was very excited about this but tbh didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Found it unpolished compared to the tracks of BM&TW I'm used to hearing. Serving on the cover though. Tried to get back into it this AM and battled. Sad.

Solid Bob

Good but not my thing

Iconic sound. Unfortunately after listening to a full album of it, it does start to get a bit boring and same-y

I had Peter Tosh two days ago. This is possibly a step above for a non reggae consumer, but not something I’m reaching for unless I’m looking for background music when company is over.

It's a fine Marley album

The one thing everybody who doesn't know me is MOST sure about is that i love reggae music. But i don't. Ska, yes. Dancehall, yes. Reggae, boring and I'm sorry. There were a couple of interesting moments but i forgot them

I mean it's Bob Marley, I can't really give this a bad rating can I? But I am not super into Reggae. Still important to be aware of though!

is this what jazz sounds like to people who don't like it? jokes. that's kind of what came to mind for the first track... but I was relieved that the rest of the album didn't feel like that for me. it was chill but still had thoughtful lyrics. it's not necessarily something I'd reach for, but I get why folks like it.

On part one of today’s reggae double bill, it’s more of the same as far as the list goes. Another 1970s Bob Marley album. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, he is rather undisputed as the greatest to do it after all. Which is why I don’t really have many proper comments to make about this album particularly, other than it’s some reggae done well. As was Catch a Fire, and as was Exodus. Marley is the messenger of the plight of the people, et cetera, et cetera. So while this is great, sure, I will probably live out the rest of my days without a need to return to it, and I am far more excited to listen to reggae without Mr Marley’s name plastered on it. And no, I will not be smoking cannabis to ‘fully enjoy’ it either.

Its the Tolkien problem. I have heard a million different versions of these songs. So the original seems slow and simple. I still liked it

Kinda less interesting than the last Bob Marley album I've heard, but I give it a 3 cause it was enjoyable and it had No Woman No Cry.

Klassisk🙏 Få jo lyst på ein joint egt... Men siden eg ikkje drive med sånn og ikkje e obsessed med reggae, så syns eg dette albumet e någe tamt:/ Beste sang: Natty Dread

Baustelle, Dischingen, Deutschland. Läuft fein durch.

"Natty Dread is the seventh album by Bob Marley and the Wailers, released in 1974. Previously Marley had recorded with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as the Wailers, and this was his first record without them." Good album. Seems like cornerstone Reggae shit that anyone who loves Marley would want and need in their life. I'm always way-more into skanky and/or out-there, heavy dub laden with crazy mixing and space echo and all that shit, so the sound on this album doesn't hold my overall interest as much as it's very straightforward and honest in it's presentation, which itself isn't at all bad and absolutely well-played throughout. Plus Marley's backup female singers are always great. Won't likely be something I'll play again, but essential for anyone into Reggae. Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock) Natty Dread Talkin' Blues

What you'd expect from Bob Marley. Music to chill to, nothing threatening but nothing exciting either.

Nice laidback, weekend morning/afternoon listening.

Good listen.

Good in retrospect, but sounds dated.

I’ve always enjoyed reggae as background music and I think I’d like to keep it that way. It’s just great music to chill to with friends. Favorite songs: No Woman No Cry, Lively Up Yourself

Great use of electric guitar fills. This is both mellow and busy. Something for everyone.

I used to be cautious of Bob Marley. The bands that I liked who liked reggae namechecked dub acts: King Tubby, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, the deep-end experimentalists. Marley felt like something else - the reggae your mother played when she found her way into Buddhism. Or my mother at least. He was also the face on the bedroom walls of people I didn’t much enjoy being around: stoners who used his image to sanctify habit into culture. There was always something of the appeal to the noble other in their lionising of Marley. That's not cool. And, in truth, neither were they. Some of the reviews here call Natty Dread “chill.” My mother was highly strung and the stoners were all twitchy. Surely, they were looking for chill in Marley, an excuse to drift. Natty Dread is not that record. It is not chill. It is angry, mournful, hopeful, and sacred. If anything, it feels esoteric. Certainly, there is much of it I don't understand. Perhaps it’s a disservice to flatten it into poster-ready bromides like “Lively up yourself” or “Everything’s gonna be alright.” Or maybe those phrases are the chinks in the armour - flashes through which you glimpse the real, beating heart of the record. Whatever that is. Or, instead of puzzling it out, I can just enjoy the delightful playing. 3 This album, delightful for the first few songs, conspicuously fades after the title track. There are still nice moments to be had in the second half - Marley thanking the backing vocals in Am-a-do or the tea-spittingly good line ‘I feel like bombing a church’ in Talkin’ Blues. The Wailers are absolutely terrific players and I find Bob Marley’s voice captivating, even on No Woman No Cry where I am much more used to the live version on Legend with a little more gravel in his voice and a little more poignancy in the pacing. 2.5/5

This is like when I go to a restaurant and eat something that I can tell is super well prepared and made from excellent ingredients, but it’s just not my jam.

I can see why the live version of No Woman, No Cry is the most commonly played version

I’ve never listened to this album, but I’m familiar with most of the songs. I don’t think I had ever heard this version of “No Woman, No Cry,” but I like it. I grew up in a time when his music was reduced to a handful of singles in popular culture, mostly associated with pot smoke and Rastafarianism. But his music influenced the artists that influenced me. I was a big Sublime fan, and Bradley often quoted Bob Marley in his lyrics and singing.

It was alright. After listening to Legend for so many years, though, it was really weird hearing the studio version of No Woman, No Cry.

Solid reggae album

Never heard the studio version of No Woman, No Cry before. Prefer the live version

Super!

On some songs, I have no problem understanding his lyrics...others he might as well be speaking Mandarin. The live version of No Woman, No Cry is infinitely better than the studio version. Bob Marley is unequivocally better live than in studio.

Was good to listen to I'd love to say 3.5 and experience to explore

Haven't heard a Bob Marley album in full before. Honestly, I think I needed this kind of sound today. It was nice 3/5

Bit slow

Nice! Liked it but didn't super connect with it. Never heard any Marley before and it was nice to fill in that history.

I’ve never been a big fan of reggae music – it’s just too slow and happy for me (or I’m too impatient and depressed for it). But even I can recognize that Bob Marley is an incredible musician, so I’m always glad to give a chance to one of his albums. This one was pleasant enough. As usual with reggae, I enjoyed the laid-back vibe for about 2 or 3 songs, then I had to do something else while listening because it was just sooooooo slow... But it makes for good background music if you’re in the right mood. The songs are beautifully written and executed, and I really enjoyed the studio version of No Woman No Cry, which I had never heard before. No idea how to rate this objectively, I know too little about the context. So it’s a purely subjective 3* for me.

Marley sell out ! With this album, Marley really steps out from his work with the wailers and morph reggae in a more international digestible music. The songs are strong and the arrangements diverse. I personally prefer the former vibes

I can’t really tell a reggae masterpiece from a mid-tier record, so I’m not the best judge here. But according to me, compared to the last Marley on the list, this one hits harder with a tighter production, raw roots vibe and no fluff. The best part is that I can actually tell the songs apart in the middle of all those damn skanks. I still don’t relate and will never, and I still don’t like those skanks, but I could see myself playing this one again under the sun, so I’ll just base my judgment on that :)

Inga kommentarer. Bra mysig bakgrundsmusik

I definitely feel Exodus is stronger than Natty Dread in terms of consistency. Last track is weak, first half of the album is better. High 3 / 4

Having only heard the amped up singles collected on Legend, it is a beautiful thing experiencing Bob Marley in this more low key, chilled out setting. He is a beautiful performer. There is a true skill in keeping things engaging when the music is just simmering along for a while 40 minutes. The original version of No Woman No Cry took a couple of listens for me as I was more familiar with the live version, but it’s got a very charming feel to it. It’s a totally different composition with a different energy and shows you just how much a single song can be transformed by how you play it. The final track is a bit of a climb down after a very consistent record, probably the only thing holding it back.

I’ve never listened to this before - I liked it. It doesn’t remotely sound like something from 1974 - his sound seems to have become timeless. This one doesn’t have quite the same feel about it as some of his other stuff, but a good listen nonetheless.

Not my kind of genre but I do appreciate the sentiment and meaning behind it

It's good. A lot of songs blend together. The hits are the hits for their uniqueness, the rest is just kinda there.

Enjoyed this one - can see it growing on me

Just can’t get into it

Good but not as good as the best of

Admittedly, I didn't listen to this album too closely. Great instrumentals, Bob Marley's voice is super enchanting, but there wasn't a specific song that really made me perk my ears up. If I have the chance, I'll give it a proper re-listen.

took me a sec to get into it but started vibing

Great album for reggae lovers, with a couple of hist best songs on it. Lively up yourself and no woman no cry.

Family vibe

I guess I don’t like Bob Marley as much as I thought I did?

Not my vibe

It’s Bob Marley, so it’s quality stuff. It’s also reggae, so it’s all pretty much the same.

Good start, very neutral. Lovely vibe for background music, but wouldn’t reach for it often. A bit too slow for first thing on a quiet Saturday morning at work.

Enjoyed this one but it is a bit samey

Faded a bit in the background for me. No woman no cry is definitely the stand out track here. Still enjoyed but probably won't revisit too much. 3/3.5

Not the best bob marly album obviously but it came around.

very nice reggae

Pretty solid album

Decent Bob Marley with one of his biggest hits!

Classic Marley. This music is so chill and generally upbeat. Makes me want to vacation in the Caribbean. Good background music

Definetly not as good as exodus but still pretty good. 6/10 Favourite: Rebel Music Least Favourite: Bend Down Low

Not his best

I love the other Marley projects I’ve heard, but this one is not up to that standard. I still respect the genre combinations, though.

super album, je suis juste un peu moins fan du reggae, je trouve que les musiques se ressemblent un peu toutes

A little reggae goes a long way with me. All I know of the genre are the Bob Marley hits. No Woman, No Cry is the obvious highlight here. The rest of the album has nothing else that stands out as unique or re-listenable. It's possible that this is the album that cemented the reggae sound but years later after hearing all the copy cats this sounds just like the rest. I'm sure a toke would mellow my opinion a bit.

3 stars. Very good, but I'm not that into it

I liked the vibe and musical style on this one a bit more than some of his other albums. Don’t think I’ve ever heard of that version of “No Woman, No Cry” before, the peppy tone of it was not what I was expecting.

I liked this I like a reggae beat and this ticks boxes. Bob has a decent voice and the Wailers are tight. Nivce vibes for cooking to and bobbing around the disco its pleasant but not amazing but its not my first choice of genres.

Respect the legend but Reggae isn’t something I would listen to a full album of.

Es puro reage, asi que si te va el estilo esta muy bien, si no se puede hacer algo pesado. Si te pilla con la vibra adecuada lo disfrutaras

Liked this more then the last Bob Marley album I got. Very similar but great

I’m not a big fan of reggae. I only knew No Woman, No Cry going in. I didn’t hate this album. It was better than I thought it would be.

The cliché with Bob Marley is that it's perfect music for hot lazy summer days, but it's true. I can enjoy it from time to time, but it's really just about the vibe and I don't really engage with any particular songs on it

Yes, this is a Bob Marley's album indeed. They all sound the same.

This is not a bad album, it has a great mood and everything, but I like my Bob Marley a little more dynamic, wild and upbeat and Natty Dread is more smooth and mellow. I will listen to Burnin', Rastaman Vibrations and Exodus and even the first Wailers way before that one.

It's a vibe.

a bit repetitive

enjoy bob, wish i could give this 3.5

It was okay, it didn't do anything crazy. Very calm listen with great sound but didn't blow me away.

Best reggae album ever.....probably but then I don't listen to many.

This one feels less varied than Catch a Fire and isn't holding my attention really. Sounds really good of course.

Lovely bops from bob

No stand outs but fun in the background

Good album, but there aren't any songs that I would revisit.

Buen disco, no mucho que decir. Bob Marley no falla. La versión de No Woman No Cry no es la mejor.

Not a Raggae fan, but it's enjoyable.

So… I guess reggae isn’t for me. I can appreciate it, but I really do not see myself vibing to it or adding it to my playlist. It’s just… not my type but good album regardless (?)

Some classics. Great sound

Classic reggae, easy listening. Not my normal vibe but for what it is, very solid.

Glad to get my first Marley album of the challenge and two more to come. Maybe not the most popular album (seventh) but still the distinct groove and sound and obvious classic - No Woman No Cry (sounds fast compared to Fugees!) Nice, easy listen with good groove, even without knowing most the songs (3.5)

Pre-listening thoughts: okay sure another Bob Marley. Doubt it will be better than Exodus but let’s go Post/during listening thoughts: this was okay. Idk I don’t love reggae. Exodus to me was great, and could definitely be a 5 if I invested in it. This could maybe be a 4 if I cared a little more. But it felt very repetitive which Exodus did not. And lyrically it wasn’t quite as engaging to me. Anyways 5.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: So Jah Seh Least fav tracks: n/a

I liked it, for its chill vibe and sound, though reggae is not the music I actively seek out to listen to, perhaps because it's very simple music. This album sounds a lot better with headphones than without it. No Woman, No Cry is a classic. Good sound overall.

It was okay. The Jamaican Patois was a little bit hard to understand. The music was good though. Maybe I’ll give another chance with the lyrics selected on Apple Music.

אחלה אלבום. קלאסי ממש. חלק מוכר חלק לא. מאוד דומה הכל

Bob is great this is a great reggae album.

The Good: We are getting fed! The Bad: Wait, that’s dread, not bread… The Ugly: What is natty bread? Suh Wi git tuh listen tuh Bob Marley an im Wailers! Yea, that’s about as much as I am going to use a free online translator to pretend like I speak patois… I am not into reaggea, though I did appreciate the previous couple of albums that I got to listen to, roughly a year ago. This album did not put me in a good place, it did not put me in a bad place, it just made me listen and wonder what my next album on the list will be… Guess wi a gwine fine outta yah inna ah second... bikaaz mia kool like that!

Unique song structures, great bass lines, would’ve been stronger if it ended w revolution

No woman no cry is a classic but the rest of the album passed me by without leaving any lasting impression

This is pretty good, but my favorite Marley is Exodus. Never heard the studio version of “No Woman No Cry” before, it’s good. If I saw this record for cheap, I’d pick it up.

Easy on the ears, a very good listen. Not as memorable or well-executed as Exodus, and only one Really Good Track (kinda… that one live version of No Woman No Cry is MUCH better than the album version) but I did still enjoy myself.

Some decent tunes.

Not bad. Reggae is fun, but definitely gets old after a while. It is definitely a summer vibe. I love the vocals all around on this album. Bob is great as are the backing vocals. This album is perfectly fine...2.5 maybe 2.75. Hot take: "No Woman No Cry" is kinda boring. Liked Songs: "Lively Up Yourself" , "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" , "So Ja S'eh" , "Bend Down Low" , "Talkin' Blues" , "Revolution"

Not bad, but gets kinda same-y 2.5

Standouts for mw are Lively Up Yourself (old-school Wailers ska feel), and Rebel Music. The rest of the album just sort of blends together into a roots medley for me.
