Reviews (page 9 of 12)
Good, pretty good. I am not sure if I'll push for a 4, high 3. Good, but I've had a really rough run of unremarkable albums. Really need a classic or something
Another perfectly listenable reggae album. I'm not the biggest reggae fan but so far, every reggae album on the 1001 list has been worth a listen or two. Natty Dread doesn't change that one bit. If you like reggae, you'll love Natty Dread and if you don't you likely still enjoy it. I had a lot of fun with it and I'm considering buying a greatest hits album by Bob Marley, Wal Mart has one on Rastafarian colors vinyl for about twenty bucks, it's really pretty.
3.5
Reggae Mon 3.5/5
Inte dåligt men inte heller Bobbans bästa album. Låter lite trött. Några sömnpiller som Talkin' Blues. No Woman No Cry är sönderspelad.
3/6
I listened to this album at least four times and each time it melted into the background, just providing some good vibes. Enjoyable but nothing that really caught my ear.
Liked the sound like the vibe but not the songs
Love it but I need to be in the mood. Heard some songs that I don't think I knew
Clean crisp production takes away some of the feeling and grit. Just an OK album.
Not Marley’s best effort, not Marley’s worst. A solid 6/10 album
This is a pretty chill record, very much a classic Reggae record. It's an easy listen, the sound is pretty consistent but Marley and co. manage to keep it interesting enough for the entire duration of the record. The themes are mostly about love, politics and some sort of life-philosophy stuff. It doesn't take away from the record, but at points Marley's views come across as very classic/conservative (e.g., "Every man needs a woman"). Given that it was the '70s, it's not surprising, but of course it hasn't aged that well. It's also interesting to note Marley's voice, which I find was a bit more developed in later records, here he sounds a bit more rough but not worse at all. My favourite songs were probably the classic "No Woman No Cry" and "Natty Dread", the chorus was pretty catchy. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty easy-listening, a cool record, but it didn't stand out much in my opinion.
Incomparable..
2.5
Very easy to listen to. Almost too easy?
a laid back and relatively chill reggae album that touches on social issues and also the empowerment of underprivileged groups. Definitely a nice fun listen.
I guess reggae is OK but it sure gets repetitive quickly and kind of tedious after a while. Bob Marley is no exception.
Good, kinda not my favorite of theirs
I'm not dumb enough to slag Bob Marley & The Wailers' Natty Dread — it basically marks Marley's emergence as a global voice, further popularized Reggae and stands as a symbol of both political resistance and spiritual uplift — but it's not my thing. I want my music to hit harder. So, sometimes I hear where the album could be punchier and angrier, and I know that's my own taste preference and musical instincts working against it. It's a solid album with some great songs — someone else is going to give it 5 stars and I won't argue.
Wow, wasnt expecting to be able to appreciate this, mostly because I'm completely unaware of these types of genres and sounds, and have literally zero previous exposure to this music and culture. Faves: No woman no cry, Them belly full, So Jah Seh. Would I revisit this: probably nah, cuz it's still not my thing, but would listen to these specific tracks again.
Prototype Bob but solid
I like the Wailers. There are times, like late mornings after a long night of debauchery, when their music is perfect. Otherwise, it’s a bit slow. Yeah, I used to love smoking pot, but those daze are over. Another band loved for the legend than the music.
Solid record. I like the alternate recordings and live versions better than these, but a good snapshot of this era.
6/10
There are plenty things I like about this album when it comes to groovy instrumentation, rhythmic vocals, and writing (mainly in the first four songs), but it is overall still feels like background music. I know that it's supposed to be relaxing since it's reggae, but I just don't enjoy music that is this quiet and devoid of energy that much. Also, the first half is way better than the second one, and it's not even close.
Alright. Not a huge fan of reggae. 6/10
Nice for a lying on the beach
okidoki de ja pierdolę kurwa bobr marley und the wailers sind da long time no see musi da zerst mal sege, han mich da scho chli gfreut aber halt au schnell müese merke dases sich um sehr situationsbedingti musig handled bi mir also de zug uf sirnach isch chli zu damp gsi für das album ja scheise oder 3 pierogis uf mim teller und nachane no 3 pączkis in grind innedruckt
Pretty much what you would expect from Bob Marley. I think this is my first time hearing the studio version of No Woman No Cry...completely understand why the live version has become the standard. 3.5/5
OK but I prefer Legend and exodus 2.8
Album starts good but fades off into a reggae void, and then almost finds something distinguishable again at the very end with Am-A-Do but just misses the mark. I enjoyed it enough!
There is other reggae stuff I have historically liked more than Bob. He's always felt a little cringey to me, but that's probably because of the "college poster" crowd embracing his whole thing so emphatically. Bob Marley has always felt very "hacky-sack" to me, but no no no, he does not sing about hacky-sacks. In a vacuum, it's good. Groovy and funky, not outstanding. Had a perfectly nice time listening to this.
Always fun to listen to. Nothing stand out for me, but it puts me in a good mood! Jah!
Boom chaka boom chaka boom chaka ad nauseum for 10 tracks. Look, there's 1 good song on this album. No Woman No Cry is really good. But seriously it's an entire album of 1 sound. I'm over reggae at this point.
It’s quite good all around, but I find myself liking the more bluesy tracks more. No Woman No Cry is a real classic
Classic Reggae. Not bad, but wouldn't be on my go to list.
Don't mind a bit of Reggie. And if you've going to listen to some it might as well be by one of the masters of the genre. The outstanding track was obviously No Woman No Cry, though like most people I am more used to the live version. On the whole though it's a creditable album. Well worth a high 3.
Very enjoyable listening.
It's good but does wash over you a little. Interesting hearing the studio version of no woman no cry, can see why the live version is more popular 3.5*
I don't dislike Marley by any means, I just never go outta my way to listen to his music. But I enjoyed this album enough, might be the first time I've listened to one of his albums front to back. No Woman No Cry is one of his songs that I love a lot, so glad to see that on this album.
Can't stand reggae for the life of me but even I can't deny the greatness in this album. Not for me tho
First time ever seriously listening to Bob Marley let's goooooo liked the first song i can't take "no woman no cry" seriously after years of hearing it in the dumbest contexts but it is a good song do I'll try to enjoy it as such i liked the third track but i do feel like i'll like it better with more listens rebel music's great but maybe too long some of these later songs do blend into each other "bend down low" was fun "revolution" is also a stand-out overall, this is a really good album, it just requires a very specific mood, one that i'm not really in at the moment. might revisit it some other time though, now thta i know what to expect.
Great musicality. Maybe the original version of “no woman no cry”.
I love a bit of Bob but not this much. Just not feeling it but it's by no means bad. Middle of the park 3
Excuse I for my skanking, give thanks and praise
Fun listen. I knew more songs than I thought I would.
Solid stuff! Love a good artist that can write music that defines the issues within society and is pushing progress against the politicians that govern.
An album that could be playing in background of a poker game. Solid for what it is, but just not up my alley…
Not my favorite Bob Marley record but still solid.
Finished, liked it ok, not rly my jam
p334. 1974. 3 stars. Not a fan of reggae, but this is good. Sharp lyrics and fine tunes. Not sure I'd listen to again due to musical preferences, but I can appreciate the impact it must have had.
Good Bob, not great Bob
6/10 Solid. Very strong songwriting, but musically maybe not that interesting. Highlights: Them Belly Full No Woman No Cry So Jah S'eh
Complete
Pre-listening note: I got a feeling I'm not gonna like this. Reggae is not my normal wheelhouse. There are a few Marley tunes I like. Post listening: it's not horrible music, but it's just not my jam. Maybe I come back to it.
Like many reggae albums, this one resonated with me on a deeper level - I was still engaged but mostly found myself lost and dazed in these grooves. In typical Marley fashion, the grooves are tight, slow, and repetitive - and laced with tons of early '70s psychadelic licks. The best song by far for me was 'No Woman No Cry', which is such a gorgeous little psychedelic reggae cut. I love that cutesy organ backing it. From a "roots reggae" and lyrical perspective, I really liked 'Revolution', a powerful cut that follows the equally galvanizing 'Talkin' Blues'. Maybe a bit too slow for me, but it's sort of what I expected from this, so I can't be too mad, I guess. It does what it does pretty well at the end of the day.
Irresistible groove by the Wailers, but not my favourite Bob Marley record
Had never been a big fan of reggae until I heard The Harder They Come soundtrack and Bob Marley’s greatest hits record Legend. I prefer songs like Many Rivers To Cross and Sitting in limbo because they don’t have a heavy reggae beat, which I prefer. Except for standards such as No Woman No Cry and Lively Up Yourself and my favorite Them Belly Full, songs like Rebel Music and So Jah S’eh have me running for the volume button, to turn it off.
I don't dislike it but I think I would need to be in a very specific mood for it.
Not as good as the other 2
Pleasant as background music, active listening made me think of better versions of songs on here. The live version of no woman no cry really beats the album version. Had a decent time, but i know there is a lot better reggae
It was pretty good best one yet
Almost a 4
It's fine. Expect more because I know the hits, but apart from Bob's political consciousness, this is pretty much as tiresome as I find any reggae album. The No Woman No Cry album version is not an improvement over the one everyone knows. Would probably prefer a Reggae/Dub/Ska/Roots/etc playlist over this album generally, but wouldn't be bad to have when you're ripping miller lites at the beach with the bros.
Chillin’ time
Exactly what you’d expect a Bob Marley album to sound like
one of the best reggae albums I've heard (ofc), but reggae isn't always what I want to listen to
How can you feel bad listening to this?
Enjoyable listen. Bass gently thumbing in the back of your head, and marleys and the backup singers impeccable synergy makes for a good late evening listen. Repetitive at times, but this may not be a problem once in the “zone”.
Good
It’s a good fun listen.
There's Bob Marley albums I like better, and reggae artists I like better than Bob Marley, but this is an OK one. Plus, it's good to listen him like this on purpose, outside of the omnipresence of his hits in every stoner-adjacent fast casual restaurant and dorm room. As a musician, I aspire to the ironically dead-ass organ sounds on "Lively Up Yourself" and it's impossible to not feel it will be when the "Everything's gonna be alright" repeats hit. Everything won't be, but it's a great template for compassion. There is non-insignificant quantities of filler on this record but "Bend Down Low" is a great party percolator I don't think I've heard before.
after a (little) while reggae just blends into itself. these guys are the best of the best so it doesn’t get TOO tiresome at least
I know Bob is someone I'm supposed to like. It's not that I don't like reggae ... but there's something that stops me from loving Marley albums. This was a little easier, but there's still something that doesn't click.
I feel like I knew every instrumental but none of the actual tracks
Fine, for a skank
2.7/5: Never been a big fan of Reggae. I watched the Bob Marley movie in theaters and do quite like some of their songs as well as the whole vibe they got going but the music just feels repetitive to me after a while.
The year my wife was born😄I found this was not the classic I thought it would from the comments and it's reputation. Some of the songs are great but others especially No women No cry are awful. How any producer could allow that track out lord only knows, reminds me of how Metallica screwed up and justice Polymath
Fine
Then Belly Full is great as is the rest
Another case of hearing a different version all the time, so the original is a bit odd. This time it's No Woman No Cry. Decent album.
I know it's all supposed to be legendary stuff, but I've just never heard why.
3/5 wishing I was on vacation lol
Bob Marley is good music for the soul. strong album from start to end.
sweet grooves and just a viiiibbbbeeeeeeeee, bob marley is cooooookkkiingggggggg
Just good reggae, Marley places himself brilliantly in each song and is backed by good social commentary.
I like Bob Marley - but maybe I'm a vanilla greatest hits sort of guy. There are a couple of classics on hear (although prob not the definitive versions of them) but a lot of the album is very samey with the same slow reggae beat and whilst this maybe great for chilling it gets a bit boring in other scenarios.
There is much here that is pleasant but not astounding. It's a fairly strong album with a few highlights. I am a bit baffled why the Live album is not in the list - surely one of the next gigs ever recorded. Still - Exodus yet to come...
Bob
This was a good vibe. Very groovy stuff, but I don’t think I’d really go listen to it again just for fun. Song to song there wasn’t a ton of variation it felt like but that did make a cohesive album, just not a ton of stand out songs.
I think reggae is growing on me more but I’m not sure how great this album is still for me. It’s fun stuff but I can’t ever imagine myself returning to this.
Basically what I wrote about the previous Bob Marley album but I'll expand a bit more I guess. Reggae is my least favorite genre (but better than the modern pop country stuff). However, I fully concede that The Wailers were first rate musicians a composers, arguably the best to ever do it. Bob is truly an icon and brilliant song writer who produced songs that I would probably be playing all the time if I was introduced to them in a different genre. The grooves and social commentary across this album cut deep and there's no denying this album's place on the Mount Olympus of classics. All that said, everything Bob and the Wailers bring to the table makes this album all the more exciting and enjoyable than other similar albums, though not more so enough for me to give it more than a 3. As I said earlier, I just really don't like reggae.
Fine performance; generally just not my style.
Good chill music but started to lose interest toward the end.
Pretty good album overall, some great songs at the start
A great reggae album, easy to listen to and sing along. You feel included in the music from the very start. Musically it's often simplistic, with similar rhythms across most of the songs. Which breaks up ever so often on some of the better songs which have more character. Lyrical themes are where the album most shines. They tell a story of love, fighting for freedom and enduring tough times, which is inspirational and conveys an emotional atmosphere throughout.
No women, no cry - and Reggae.
nunca fui mto fã de bob marley
Standout Track: Lively Up Yourself
...
6/10
At some point I hope to revisit this, but my honest truth right now is that I don't know enough reggae to critically evaluate reggae.
I like this more than I thought I would. Not sure what I was expecting. I thought every song would sound reggae but they don't.
Lättlyssnad och skön musik
Great reggae music, very accessible and easy to listen to. Some classic songs as well as some great beats on ones that I was not familiar with. Very chilled out, I could listen to this often while blazing it. Seems like they go hand in hand.
I smoke way too much weed to not be more in to Bob Marley than I am, but reggae just never quite grabs me. I respect the hell out of him, his music, his message, his legend, though. I gave this album a couple listens today too, the few stand out repeat listens: "No Woman No Cry," "Them Belly Full," and "Natty Dread."
Pretty good album, 3.5 was hoping for more classics but it was fun to hear "No Woman, No Cry" studio version instead of the far more famous live version
I haven’t listened to a lot a of reggae overall except the songs that have been played to death. I actually did enjoy this album overall, solid length and great playing and singing.
Not nearly as good as 'Exodus'. And the studio version of No Woman No Cry is vastly inferior too.
I like Bob Marley, but I'm more of a greatest hits kind of Bob Marley fan. Nothing bad, the music is good, but all the songs sound similar.
ja wel aardig
Reviewed Exodus just two days ago, so feels unfair to rate this earlier, less polished album so soon. This is Marley's first record as the official leader of the Wailers, and is evident that the songwriting lacks the polish of the band at their zenith. This record is consistently good, but lacks any clear high points. Best Tracks: - Revolution - No Woman No Cry Worst Tracks: - So Jah S'eh Rating: 6/10
Really good background music, as such haven't been deeply listening to any lyricism, just the instrumentals. With that being said, and as someone who going into this album was not keen for anything labelled as Reggae that this is an easy listening album that I could easily come back to! I HATE this "do it with your bad self" vamp in Am-A-Do, fuck this shit's annoying
I had never really listened to any reggae before starting this, but I'm really enjoying it. I'm not sure if it's something I'll seek out on my own in the future, but this is some good stuff. I'm nearly 900 albums into this thing so anything but classic rock is always welcomed. Would rate 3.5.
Needed on a blue day.
"And sus me out" Pretty much any album by Bob Marley from 1973-1980 is gonna be good and this one is no exception, though I do prefer other albums from this era such as "Catch a Fire" and "Exodus". Listening to this album just feels like you're going through the motions of a Bob Marley album which isn't a bad thing, it's just not as memorable as those other records. "No Woman No Cry" is definitely the highlight here but there's plenty of other tracks that make this worth checking out. If this is an "average" Bob Marley album than it just goes to show how good the guy is at making music. Favorite track: No Woman No Cry 3.5/5
Nice to relax to, but not my cup of tea. Found it peaceful.
256/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
A bit odd to listen to this in the dead of winter. This is definitely a summer album. Marley's politics shines but the songs are just good, not great. Give me Exodus over this one.
3+ Stars (9/15)
Solid easy listening. Nothing particularly stood out, but everything blended together nicely for a relaxing 40 minute listen.
Nice and basic reggae, I liked it
Not a huge fan of reggae, but it's a vibe. Gets a bit stale after a while. Decent background music.
a vibe. slightly repetitive. no real standouts
Felt like this was kinda hit or miss. Wish it had more instrumentation sometimes, but decently groovy. Fav Songs: Lively Up Yourself, Revolution
Fine, I guess
I enjoyed No Woman No Cry, but nothing else really stood out for me. However, it's not the worst thing to listen to.
It was alright, not as good as exodus though
Heard it many times before, not his best but still pretty good.
Solid not my favorite by Marley but overall a decent album
3 out of 5. Nice to see Bob Marley on this list after not listening to him for ages.
Every time I listen to Bob Marley, I feel like his music is just missing something. Just like other Bob Marley that I've listened to, it's serviceable reggae, but I feel like I enjoy other reggae artists more. Best Songs: No Woman No Cry, Rebel Music Worst Songs: Am-A-Do
Listened to this while playing Imperium: Legends. I won! Definitely some great songs on here...but i must say, I've never been a big fan of reggae music. Definitely can hear why this album was important, but not something I'd throw on again and again.
Not too bad, I like it
I did enjoy this album but I prefer his anthology with hits, felt like the songs didn't hit as much as I'd have liked them to
I prefer other Bob Marley stuff I've heard. Also, this is probably sacrilege, but I prefer The Harder They Come as a reggae album to this as well.
It's hard to separate the art from the artist. Great music but then apparently he was a criminal (smoked MARIJUANA) so it's hard to know what to think
Decent chill album. Don't hate reggae, don't love it either
¿Exodus? ¿Kaya?
This is my first album on from 1001albums, before listening I wasn't sure if I knew the songs or not. But of course I did! I just never knew the time frame or album of Bob Marley music, it's just sort of always there in the background untethered. 3/5 (but I know I'll disagree later)
Can't say this is my thing but it was a nice chill time but I kind of feel out of my depth trying to analyze this one. All around, good yea
I liked it, but it was certainly more low key then I tend to listen to.
Clássico! Com letra fortes e um ritmo contagiante. Além da clássica `No Woman, No Cry`, gostei de `Them Belly Full(But We Hungry)` e `Natty Dread`
Pretty chill. Enjoyed it more than i thought i would. Maybe because just those 2-3 songs are overplayed
Wasn't sure how I felt about this album initially. It was a nice enough album, and I liked the lyrics. But it just wasn't clicking for me I think I just prefer other Bob Marley songs to these. They weren't bad at all, just missing a spark No Woman No Cry - love that song though! 3 ⭐️
Can see myself chilling to this in the living room. Doesn’t do anything spectacular to me, though. Nice heavy bass is good.
Kinda torn on this one. As far as reggae goes, Bob Marley nails it. Great merger of uplifting music with heavy subjects. However, without much variety from one song to the next, it felt like the album overstayed its welcome. Would have been a better experience in smaller doses.
Not really a fan of reggae or Bob Marley, but I remember listening to a few songs off this album growing up. Not an album that I am likely to revisit
Reggea might well be the ultimate 'easy to love, easier to ignore' genre out there. Bob Marley proves both of these statements here: the former on the first half, the latter on the second half.
Some good vibes, not bad.
Reggae. Marley. For me, he IS the genre and I like the atmosphere the music creates, but I wouldn't sit down and listen to it.
Lacked a little heaviness in beat. Not the level of groove I hoped for. Did enjoy no woman no cry on a bontempi organ
Not a huge fan of reggae but part of the reason for doing this project is to expose yourself to new and other music. Surprisingly liked this but doubt I'd put it on very often.
I wanted to like it more. I liked a few songs but overall found the album unexciting.
achei ok
Less Reggae-y than I expected, and better than I was thought it was going to be!
I knew No Woman No Cry, but none of the other songs. I enjoyed the album, but nothing else stood out.
Helt solid platta.
There's obviously skill here and this is influential, but I found less than I expected to. Could have been me or the day since I only had time for one listen.
I don't know why but this album made me anxious. I find myself waiting for the beat to drop, but it never happens. I like a single here and there, but a whole reggae album might not be for me. There is some beautiful stuff here, I probably need to revisit it after taking the proper path.
Easy listening, some hits. Happy to listen to Marley any time. 2.7/5
Bob Marley is basically impossible to hate, but I also don't get much from his music other than "yeah, I enjoyed that". So.. yeah, I enjoyed that.
I’m not a big reggae fan. And this certainly isn’t the best from them. Pleasant enough to hear.
No surprises here. I enjoy reggae. It all sort of sounds the same to me, but I like the sound, so I’ll give it a 3
Pretty mellow album, but I just don't ever find myself in the mood to listen to reggae music. Enjoyable overall but not an everyday listen for me.
Yeah fine
Mostly interesting as a historical artifact for me.
Not really my jam, but it's a classic for sure
A million coffee shops have ruined this music for me. It's beautiful, but I just can't hear it anymore.
Not really that into the reggae sound, but this was enjoyable enough. Consistent quality.
Pretty good. Nothing blowing my mind though.
Big Bob Marley fan but this is not my favourite album of his. Liked it more on second listen though. Never heard this version of No Woman No Cry before.
3.75
This is quite a pleasant classic rock CD, but it lacks the firepower of Exodus. It's just more stripped down - not as rich a sound, not as deep - and just not as catchy. In particular, a good chunk of the 2nd half is very repetitive. "Bend Down Low" is literally the same 2-bar lick throughout, that might be the low point. This on-record version of "No Woman No Cry" is the hit, but a couple other songs from the first side are better songs in this version. I especially like the lead off track. It's nice overall, I'd play it again. Just doesn't stand out as much.
Another good Bob Marley album. Although not as good as "Exodus". "Talkin' Blues" is the best track here. Nothing special by today's standards. That's all I have to say today. 3 stars for "Natty Dread".
instrumentals and backing vocals are really cool and supportive of Bob Marley’s voice
Wel lekker zonnige muziek op deze regendag
I am most familiar with Bob Marley's material on Legend as well as the Exodus album. I was not previously familiar with this album. This album contains the studio version of No Woman No Cry, which I had not heard before. I can understand why the live version was included on Legend - it's way better than this version. My favorite track on this album is Lively Up Yourself. The album overall is good, but would not include it as one of his best albums.
A decent album, but there are far better Marley albums. Plus, the big song on the album ( No woman...) is massively inferior to the better known live version.
Crear instrumentales, although the vocals are great for my taste the reggae gets boring
Repetitive in a way Exodus wasn't. Favourite track: No Woman No Cry.
I didn’t hate this, but it also does nothing for me. I’ve never been moved by reggae in any way. Just feels very simplistic and moves at a speed that my life does not, and I wouldn’t want it to.
1st time Listening 6/10
Odvrtio dvaput i nemam više potrebe.
Lively Up Yourself - Kreće lijepo, dosta noice otvaranje albuma, reggea sa bluzerskim štihom, prstohvat pozadinskih orguljica, Marleyev glas "at it's prime", simpa sax solo i ajmo pleši! Jedinstvo, pozitiva, entuzijazam, SKANK! 2. No Woman No Cry - Svi je znamo toliko da već pizdiš i riga ti se kad je čuješ, ali i dalje hit i dalje prekrasne riječi. 3. Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) - Jako fini rifić na početku, žene backovi (The I–Threes, u čijem triju je i sama žena Boba, Rita Marley) se raspjevali sa "na na na"! Nastavlja sa političkim tekstovima uz classic reggae. Gladni ljudi su ljuti ljudi, tak da sve zaboravi i pleši uz Jah music! Um ca um ca ca, um ca 4. Rebel Music - A ono... i dalje um ca um ca, ne staje Marley. Ovdje uz trubice i raspjevane žene u posjet dolazi i tužna usna harmonika i svi želimo slobodu i duvat.. Aaaaaaaaa rebel music... hey mr. cop.. 5. So Jah S'eh - Bog kaže da mu djeca neće bit sirotinja. Um ca um ca um ca i dalje... I to je to... 6. Natty Dread - Hoda on hoda, Bog te jebo, kroz 626 ulica sa svojim dredovima, congo bongo i boli ga kita šta će tko reći. Bend Down Low - Naprči se i reći ću ti sve kaj znam... živiš u grijehu... sexy time... Sve isto; trube, orgulje, žene pjevaju, on viče... 3/5 (No Marley, no cry)
OK album, I enjoyed listening to this. Surprisingly some better songs on here than "No Woman No Cry"
Good, not great.
Another day, another Bob Marley album. No woman no cry is one of his better hit singles, still don’t really care about reggae though.
With themes of rebellion and social justice. Also misheard lyrics “Hungry mob is a hangry mob”.
Nett anzuhören.
Ok individual tracks and pretty well-rounded as a whole album, but not great.
The album contains the song "No Woman, No Cry" but not in the well known version. The rest of the album is o.k. Weak three stars for that. 2,5
Good reggae album and it is a good intro but still pretty average
Was a decent listen
Cómo me aburre... Se salva No Woman No Cry y Lively Up Yourself
Found myself having it on in the background an not picking up on too many details. Ideal for that vibe but Reggae doesn't grab my attention, which limits my enjoyment.
Easy to listen to but not a lot of pop or kick here.
Natty Dread be some good, old school reggae, mon. Don’t remember this album when it came out, Bob didn’t go mainstream for another few years. Only hit off this album was No Woman No Cry, but all songs are jaunty. Enjoyed a short Jamaican vacation with this listen. (3.4*s)
I'm still not a fan of reggae, but I have to admit, this album was not as irritating as other on the list. That deserves a grrat 3 stars, which for reggae record is basically a max available score.
Iconic album, but doesn't really hit the same way that some of his other music, especially the live version of "No Woman No Cry", does. Feels a bit thin at times.
How many times is Bob gonna be on here?
solid album, felt like a summers day and it was fitting as i was listening to it during a really warm sunny day
lively up yourself- 5 no woman no cry- 4 or 5 kind of boring sorry guys them belly full- 5 rebel music- i like the harmonica. roblox? 5 so jah s'eh- 5 natty dread- 6 bend down low- excuse me? 5 or 6 talkin blues- 5 revolution- 5 or 6 am a do- 5 but you know what isnt irie? favorite track- natty dread
Pretty good. Some killer, some filler
Not bad, but not too much stood out here. Sounds like early music.
Similar sounds to me
glad it was a sunny day. good listen while spending some time outside. couple tracks lagged but overall a good listen
It's ok - I just don't much care for reggae. Every song sounds kind of the same, but fine to bop along with
This record was probably not intended for sober white guys in the gym on a Saturday morning. Still, can't say I dislike it — reggae just isn't quite for me.
No Woman No Cry, ‘97
A pretty good album but for me personally lacks massive highlights
3.4 - Yeah it was nice enough. Just find it a little boring and repetitive.
Nat the most inspiring Bob if you ask me. Fave Track: Rebel Music (3 O' Clock Road Block) 3.2/5
A 42 minute funky reggae party. Ok but not amazing. 3/5
Peace and love, man.
I was actually a little surprised to see this album pop up today. I had Exodus a few weeks ago and that seems like it would pretty much cover the necessary Bob Marley. This is a decent album but surely there's nothing on this record that Exodus doesn't do better. This is maybe a deeper dig and I feel like there could have been something else added to this list in its place. The record is fine, nothing spectacular. If you like Bob Marley, you'll like it. If you're not a reggae fan, this won't change your mind. 3/5
I somehow skipped that stage when you’re 17 and buy that Bob Marley Greatest Hits album, so the closest I ever got was The Fugee’s cover of “No Woman, No Cry.” I don’t think that benefited me during this listen; my ears are missing some context to fully make reggae click. That said, this album has some really great highlights that do get me interested to learn more about the genre. “No Woman, No Cry” is truly incredible, and the obvious album standout, but the next track, “Them Belly Full” is just as good. I also like “Talkin’ Blues” a lot. Besides that, there’s songs I find to be good — “So Jah Seh,” “Natty Dread,” and Revolution” — but I actively did not enough everything else. I have no way to really explain this well, but they all sounded very dated and the funk-rock vibes felt very thin. Thin production, thin genre blending, and thin songwriting. I also think Marley makes some vocalization choices that I hate, which is weird because I actually enjoy his singing voice. It’s just when he’s trying to convey stage presence, something about it feels too forced. Thankfully, Natty Dread is a short album, and even if I find it to have some obvious peaks and valleys, it’s mostly an enjoyable listen. I’d love to revisit this album once I’m more comfortable with reggae and Marley’s general discography. I can’t shake the feeling that my lack of exposure overall is making me underrate this. But on face value, it’s a little too spotty, with clear highlights but also clear low points.
I just don't understand reggae. It's fine but nothing I will ever go back to
Decent. Enjoyable vibes. I’d rate it 3.5 stars if I could.
FAVO: No Woman No Cry
It's good but fairly minimalist.
Reggae is a genre I haven't gotten too deep into. All around this album was ok. Good vibes but not much else. 3/5.
Not really my thing but not bad.
No disrespect to Bob Marley - he's the king of reggae. But I went through my reggae phase many years ago and don't enjoy listening to it aside from the once a year visit to the Wild Hare (RIP).
Pretty average offering from the King. First album without Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer and it shows, still coming to terms with the new dynamic. This album has nothing on some of the later releases Exodus in particular. Interesting to hear a more upbeat less polished No Woman No cry than the version that is more well known
Lots of nice reggae that is enjoyable, however I'm not a massive fan of reggae and the album does feel a little long and a little boring.
Nice album. Steady beat.
Er klingt noch so jung damals
Nice little background listen. Definitely not super amazing to have as the main thing playing in your headphones while you're doing something, but having it on speakers on the side while you're working, for example, is nice. Very peaceful album, and the one song that I knew was "No Woman No Cry".
Some great some on here
I like Bob and there's a least a couple of big tracks on here but there are better albums of his. For instance- No woman and Lively are better on the Live album?
The king of reggae Lays down relaxing, mellow Sing a long protests
Some decent songs but not much variety
Parece música de drogadicto.
Maybe a bit more meditative than the 2 other wailers albums we’ve had so far, but otherwise pretty similar
I’m no reggae head, so lots of this sounded quite similar. No Woman, No Cry is enough to transform me into a reggae head though.
Really really good… don’t think it’s on the level of exodus or burnin’ for me but some excellent songs
Reggae isn't my favorite genre but I do enjoy Bob Marley. This isn't one of my favorite albums from him though. Half the songs didn't really put off the island vibes that I've come to expect from a Marley song and instead are more bluesy. I think some of his later work is a lot more essential.
Sounds like exactly what I expected to hear. The musicality is great, but each track is very similar, and so it all kind of mushes together for me. It's vibey.
Yep, it's a Bob Marley record. Sounds like all the other Bob Marley records.
No Woman, No Cry, and not much more here
it's fine, it's fun but it's not his best work in my opinion. Lively up Yourself and No Woman No Cry will forever be iconic though! He breathes love and joy through his music
Pleasant but boring after a few songs
OK, needs a second listen as of felt repetitive
It’s okay, just ain’t my speeds.
Perfect for cycling in summer under the trees of the Városligeti fasor. Not my taste though.
I thought this album was kind of serious. Not bad
Wasn’t particularly bad. Classic Marley. I enjoyed it, but I did not find much really memorable parts. I’d listen to this anytime though.
Can't dispute the musical talent and significance, but not quite my taste.
Nice early Marley. Was surprised by the different version of Woman No Cry, not what it’s become known as. Lively Up Your Life was a good mantra song.
I understand why people would like it, but the production was just a little too underwhelming for me.
One more to tick off the list. Nothing too interesting but still a good listen.
Always love me some Bob Marley, even though I don't think this is his best record. I much prefer the live version of 'No Woman No Cry' to this one. The drum machine or whatever the beat thing is is making it feel very amateurish and like a kids version. Couldn't really single out any specifically strong songs, but they were all ok still.
Honestly most reggae albums kind of sound the same to me and this one was much the same. Everything melded together in to something chill but not all that interesting. I also see why all versions of "No Woman, No Cry" I have heard have been live versions as they are much better than this studio version. Maybe it's the same with the other tracks too? If so maybe a Bob Marley live album should be on this list.
i know reggae is an established genre and all but this is the first time im really hearing a full album in the genre. to me, it's a very pleasant to listen to mix of soul, folk, and some psychedelia with a bit of jazz. natty dread is not a titan of instrumentation but certainly is quality, with all kinds of instruments having highlights. this album is far less "One Love *peace sign*" than i expected, much more socially conscious in ways you can see rap would clearly draw from. bob marley has a wonderful ear for melody (the chorus of no woman, no cry a highlight). if i had to give an criticism, some of the organs sound very church/gospel to me in an off-putting way. the longer songs meander, which im sure is the point but its not in an interesting, exploratory manner, just looped really. not that big of a deal however. natty dread isn't something ill find myself giving repeat listens to but im certainly glad to have heard it.
Reggae music is perfect for packing to go to Lisbon. 7/10
Bueno
immaculate vibes
Nettes Album
A typically solid album from Marley, since Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh had departed by this one. A bit middling though, maybe lacks the spitirt of 'Catch a fire' but this is Bob maturing into singer-song writer superstardom that was to follow.
Cómo me aburre... Se salva No Woman No Cry y Lively Up Yourself
Honestly just a bland reggae record considering the bar set by Bob Marley himself on other much better records. This was much mire true considering the major hit on the album "No Woman No Cry" wasn't the live version.
Its not the best version of Marley's best song. That is on the live album. And the remainder is pretty standard reggae fare as far as I can see.
I've gone in to bat for reggae in the past, but I quite liked this. While there are many albums that are already my go-to choices for chill background noise when I'm crafting or cooking or whatever and will probably never go hunting for reggae in the future, I didn't hate this experience.
not my fav bob, but nice to listen to his early stuff. obviously great beats and a summer vibe, but some bland stuff in here
obviously a really great album. just not the biggest fan of reggae
An enjoyable listen, though not my favorite Marley album.
Objectively great album. I’ll pull it out for a listen for a day at the beach
Not as good as Exodus. If I needed a lot of reggae, I'd start with Exodus then move into this, but on it's own it's not exceptional.
Rebel music kicked in just as I was glimpsing the city skyline on Blackfriars Bridge. Just as Bob would’ve wanted it. All this is to say that this may have been a little lost on me considering. Felt similar to Station to Station, carried by the vibes that I may or may not be fully sold on.
This was good, but they have better albums. 3.0/5.0: Good
Back to back Bob Marley - maybe if I had gotten this album a bit more isolated I would’ve vibed with it a bit more… not a bad album - but I enjoyed Exodus more. Exodus had more hits to surround the other songs with.
Pleasantly jammy
An enjoyable reggae experience
Like the last Marley album, I don’t feel qualified to tell if this is good reggae or not which limits its ceiling. That being said I enjoyed the music and knew the one song so that’s something
Overall an easy listen. Reggae has a bit of a homogenous sound - like coffee and red wine tastes. I love melody and rhythm when it comes to appreciating music, as opposed to lyrical content. Fairly solid album overall with some familiar hits.
regae!
Coooool. Lively Up Yourself and listen to some Rebel Music. What a voice. Didn't love every track (the backing vocals were a bit distracting) but enjoyed the vibe. And what an excellent title for an album! 😎
Love them but somehow this doesn't really grab me. Brilliant recording though, sounds so good 50 years on. The first 3 tracks are great but as a complete album 'Catch A Fire' is still my favourite.
Bob Marley on our fourth day, what a treat! Enjoyable listen the whole way through. Not as catchy as some of his other albums though, and the slower live version of ‘No Woman No Cry’ is far better than studio in my opinion. Jah forgive me.
Nit da größte Reggae fan aber gutes Album
Liked it! Would revist
It sounded nice.
Bob Marley is always easy listening. Now understanding the context for his life better than I did when I discovered him in college I realize how great his message was. I have to admit that I am used to hearing his Legend hits aBlum and live versions so the original tracks are different. Key tracks are Revolution and No Woman. He is the legend!
Bob Marley is great! But this album is just okay. That's not "No Woman No Cry"! So weird to hear the recorded version after hearing the Legend version a million times. Does this prove the live version is superior or have I just heard the live version so many times that any other version would sound weird? Still kinda shocking to hear the version on this album. Lively Up Yourself is great! But the rest of the album kinda blended together for me. Maybe I'm just spoiled from Legend and Natural Mystic being greatest hits collections. Shrug.
Ei ärsytä mua 40 minuutissa, mikä on reggaelle harvinaista! On hyviä biisejä, tosin b-puolella katoaa mun mielenkiinto. Muusikoiden onneksi ei, nekin on taiten tehtyjä biisejä eikä löysiä.
