Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Good album! not my cup of tea but still good music.
A lot of Queen songs I've never heard before. Showcases a variety of musical thematic switches and storylines fading between songs. 1st album of this journey, and a pretty great one to get to start on. I think you might have to be pretty biased to think this is not a "good" album.
Would listen again; no such thing as a bad Queen album; will always love killer queen so so much - other faves were stone cold crazy and in the lap of the gods.
The album where queen became queen
"Brighton Rock" goes so hard with its guitar shredding. I enjoyed the overall tone of this album with its stronger hard rock influences.
So much of this album is like Motley Crue 10 years ahead of its time, until the latter half with a really fun ragtime turn. Didn’t expect to like Queen’s deep cuts this much, though a lot of it is instrumental acrobatics that undercut the songwriting, especially in the front half.
Cool to see their harder side. Misfire and Tenement Funster were good finds.
Rough, I like when Queen were rough
Surprisingly good, always thought i didn't like queen but their earlier stuff is operatic and heavy metal ish
only one of the big numbers on here, but everything you haven't heard of is still a banger.
You have heard "Killer Queen," but the deep cuts on this album to enjoy include "Tenement Funster" and "Now I'm Here." Although Freddie Mercury is a standout vocalist and was a huge personality, Queen is more than Freddie. There is a healthy range of songwriting credits and contributions. Roger Taylor (drummer) who would later write "I'm In Love With My Car" contributes "Tenement Funster" to this album which I think is actually the highlight. John Deacon who would later contribute notable songs such as "You're My Best Friend" and "Another One Bites the Dust" contributes "Misfire" (unfortunately, that song is indeed a misfire in my opinion...just silly). Now. I'd rather have a deep cut album by Queen than a host of other possibilities but I'm a bit confused about this album's placement on this list. Their previous album Queen II is a tour de force, as is their following album - the classic A Night At The Opera. Both those are on the list too, so that's good. But this album is weaker than either of those (though it's still good) and seems transitional. Meanwhile, consulting an online guide, it seems that News of the World and The Game are NOT on the list? That seems unconscionable. And just plain weird. Hope it's not true.
yeah
Killer Queen is probably my favorite of their songs, as someone who only ever really listened to Queen on the radio. Always assumed this album was just going to be Killer Queen and friends, but it turns out that might not even be the best song on here!
Another banger Queen album.
Really good album
Would listen again but I didn't love it.
I'd never listened to this album all the way through. Felt like good classic Queen.
love
Queen's best by far I love when they do hard rock stuff and Stone Cold Crazy is amazing
Listened to the whole day while finishing up my thesis (writing conclusion, altering discussion and introduction, putting in figures numbers and changing them etc.) Worked on it for at least 15 hours (9 - 00), so listened to this album at least 10 times by know (just past midnight). Havent gotten sick of it yet, which is a good sign. At the same time I do not think this is an album I will go back too. Some songs are quite fun.
Not the best Queen album, but the you can hear glimpses of future Queen and where they were going to take their sound. The musical talent is undeniable, the theatrical quality is beginning to emerge, vocal arrangements are already complex, with multi-layered harmonies. This must have been a stunner when it first came out, I can't imagine there was anything like it at the time.
I love Killer Queen and Lap of the Gods, but I do find some of the other tracks a bit average. I'm not sure Queen ever managed a "all killer no filler" album, and I'm reasonably sure this isn't one. Still Queen though.
Yes, finally a Queen album! Really enjoyed this one and liked a few of the songs that I wasn't familiar with. Such a great band and Freddie Mercury, how can you not love his voice?!
+ Killer Queen, Misfire, In the Lap of Gods... Revisited
Pretty nice, I like the guitar a lot, maybe sometimes a bit monotonous
7/10
Some good transitions, especially on the first half of the album. I was only familiar with Killer Queen and Now I'm Here before listening, which are good songs. Other than those, the best songs seem to be the shorter ones.
Hadn’t listened to this before, cohesive, classic queen sound.
Otworzyłam się na the queen Świetny album Mają to swoje coś Chociaż moj ulubiony track na albumie "in the laps of god" troche pink floydowy
8.5/ so much fun, so dynamic
A solid and fun rock album! I love Queen and Freddie Mercury but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this album in full. This album has one of my favorite Queen songs, “Killer Queen.” Overall I enjoyed this album and would recommend it to others!
Very grand sounding album with Freddie’s opera-like vocals/harmonies and Brian May’s blaring guitar. Love how almost every song sounds different. Great album
There are a lot more Queen albums than I thought. Not as good as I was expecting but still alright. Tracks 2-5 were my favorite. Low 4.
7/10 - Queen is good and killer queen is great. Makes a pretty good album in total
Classic queen, some major hits and hidden gems
3.5 - Good
Interesting blend of the heavier rock sounds I would associate with someone like Zeppelin, with the steady Freddie vocals I would expect. Listened to while making my end of semester study plan.
https://youtu.be/ZJP5pT7b3n0?si=X78q40mwf216XTfg
The majority of songs sounded different than “popular” Queen, far more interesting
Better than night at the opera and this is not a hill I’m willing to die on. I am just not willing to die please don’t argue with me
Lots of different styles here, all enjoyable. And I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't know "Stone Cold Crazy" was a Queen song!
Enjoyed this album, very tight arrangement but does get overly theatrical at times.
The hits hit hard, but the theatrical nature of the middle of the album did too.
# Album Name: Sheer Heart Attack # Artist: Queen # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good listen. Doesnt live up to the later queen stuff but you can tell its the beginning of things to come. Low 4. # Top Tunes: Brighton Rock / Killer queen # Would I listen to it again? Yes
I love this band and I enjoyed this album. 4
Ok really liked this one !
Great stuff! The band had really got into its stride here.
Pretty fun!
Good
Great album! Especially from a band not considered an “album band”
Such a classic!
Brighton Rock - 4/5 (guitar solo was the best part) Killer Queen - 5/5 (obviously) Tenement Funster - 3/5 Flick Of The Wrist - 4/5 Lily Of The Valley - 3/5 (beautiful track but it's too short!!!) Now I'm Here - 5/5 In The Lap Of The Gods - 4/5 Stone Cold Crazy - 5/5 (more crazy guitar) Dear Friends - not rating, too short. it's pretty though Misfire - 2/5 Bring Back That Leroy Brown - 3/5 She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettos) - 3/5 In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited - 4/5 Overall score: 3.8/5 (excludes Dear Friends) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sheer Heart Attack, although not among Queen's most acclaimed albums, played a crucial role in shaping the musical identity that would make them iconic throughout their career. Released in 1974, this album blended rock, opera, and pop elements that would become the group's signature. Tracks like "Killer Queen" demonstrate the band's ability to combine catchy melodies with sophisticated lyrics, laying the foundation for their musical evolution. Thus, even though it is not considered the band's best work, Sheer Heart Attack was an essential step in their creative journey, solidifying the bold and original proposal that we would see expand on future albums. Very enjoyable album. The guitar playing and drumming were excellent
Queen never lets me down.
4.3 - Yeah this was really fun
love
Great. A lot of variation. Not the same high level all the way through, but none of the songs are bad. Remarkable how much better it is than Queen II which was released earlier in the same year. Favorite song: stone cold crazy.
Really cool and just shows there's still so much Queen to discover
Dai gay per i gay
i would rob banks to this album
Es una banda tan polifacética que camaleónica mente puede pasar con igual valor al pop, al rock, duro y suave y más, mucho más. Brian May eximió instrumentista aún con un pie en la tumba, logra milagros imposibles.
Solid. Gotta love Queen
I’ve had a fondness for Queen since a young age as my British father introduced me to them early on. I was entranced by their theatrical and orchestral nature and the music was always fun to listen to - this record is no different. Mercury’s voice is uncanny and is so charming to listen to. The band is engaging and captivating, making beautiful harmonies with each song. I’ll always love this band, and this record goes along with it.
Not the best, but nonetheless a great Queen record. I was especially astounded by Roger Taylor's vocal work on the third track. A solid 4.
Loved this album - interesting enough with a bunch of different textures and vibes to be engaging.
Love Freddie Mercury, love Brian May, love Queen. I feel like this album you get some influence outside of their usual sound, as well as some absolute classically QUEEN songs. Not my favorite album from them, but a good listen nonetheless.
4.5
Otro disco top de Queen. Me gusta más A Night at the Opera, pero este está muy bien también. Canción destacada: Stone Cold Crazy (por no decir Killer Queen xd)
This exactly what I imagined the album would sound like. Classic Queen sound, but nothing I would want to listen to that much again (outside of Killer Queen of course). Either way it was still a good album!
Good album, no real standouts other than killer queen but just an all-around good album with great harmonies and riffs in true Queen fashion. Nothing that I didn’t like, but nothing that had me in awe.
One of the things this project has revealed to me is that I am a much bigger fan of Queen than I thought I was. Brighton Rock...rocks. This is just straight up original music that doesn't sound quite like anything else.
It's Queen. Either you love them or you hate them. Me? I love them.
I mean it’s Queen
Не самый лучший альбом у Queen. Крепкий середняк.
nothing beats "Brighton Rock". i'm sorry -- i love "Killer Queen", it's an incredible song, but it's an absolutely horrible way to explain what the fuck Queen is to your friend from under a really heavy rock or outer space. their best songs are theatric, but they also rock the fuck out, and you could argue they don't get bigger on either than on "Brighton Rock". like, the rest of the album's fine. "Stone Cold Crazy" is great and whatever and they've got a few good proggy bits on the LP, and hell, the Roger track is pretty good, but you're not gonna get any better than "Brighton Rock"; it's impossible. for five minutes, everything was perfect, the balance was right in the universe.
It's pretty good; "Brighton Rock" (guitars!) and "Killer Queen" are the standouts. I suspect there's probably another Queen album out there that I'll like more than this one.
Really dramatic driving hard rock. Well executed and heavily produced with layered vocals and guitar riffs. Great rhythm.
👍👍
Dang, this is a lot better than I thought it would be. I was worried it would be boring and overplayed, but it was an enjoyable listen. Some of the lesser known songs get a little weird and go off the rails, but in a good way.
Queen is so good! And this album was start to finish great.
Good album
This sure is a Queen album! They do many genres very well.
All Queen albums are great
Bohemian Rhapsody was my comfort movie for like a full year so this might be a nostalgia rating but idc i love it
I did forget that Queen has more than their many many hits. That said, even considering the hits, this was way harder into rock than I was expecting, not that I'm complaining. Killer Queen, of course, is the hit, but compared to the rest of Sheer Heart Attack, it kinda bites the dust. I did forget that Queen... This album is one of the first albums any wannabe rock snob should listen to. I say this affectionately, of course. It's a testament to the quality of the album that I'm not even sure Killer Queen breaks the top half of the tracklist. I don't feel the need to mention the quality of the vocal work beyond "it's Freddie Mercury, you know how incredible a vocalist he is", and the rest of the band keeps the vibe going throughout with classic Queen flair. Favorite track: Tenement Funster Least favorite track: She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos)
It was harder rock than expected at times. I enjoyed it.
I didn’t expect to like it this much. A lot more thoughtful and sharp than A Night at the Opera even.
B+ Brighton Rock 4 Killer Queen 4 Tenement Funster 4 Flick of the Wrist 4 Lily of the Valley 4 Now I’m Here 3 In the Lap of the Gods 5 Stone Cold Crazy 3 Dear Friends 3 Misfire 4 Bring Back That Leroy Brown 3 She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos) 3 In the Lap of the Gods… Revisited 4 I think I’m just Queen’d out. I grew up on this stuff and I just know it too well. It’s like The Beatles at this point.
I’ve never really listened to them straight through before and I dig a bunch of the deep cuts. Classic rock ballads are kinda cool.
I disliked this on first listen but I gave it a couple more tries and what do you know, it’s grown on me rather a lot. There is always something mildly ridiculous about Queen, I think they know it though
Classic
найс. киллер куин - имба.
This album was a lot of fun. I only knew two songs, (“Killer Queen” and “Now I’m Here”) but they’re all good. I like the mix of Queen’s heavier sound with the classic melodramatic harmonies they’re known for. It’s just a solid album of what you expect Queen to sound like. Not sure it's anything revolutionary as far as this list goes but would listen again. 4/5
One of the bands best works. Definitely glam rock💯
3.5
What can be said about one of the greatest voices music ever and one of the most best bands to ever cross rock with opera do hasn't been already told? I like how you can feel the were building up to 'A night at the Opera' with this album
Not much of a Queen fan but this was good.
Not a queen fan, but I like Killer Queen. So I'll give it 4.
The first two albums are really Queen finding their sound. This to me is where Queen truly became Queen. The 100% fun tracks, to dead serious, to quick change genres, all the theatrics that is Queen is in full force on this album. They would perfect it in the next. But to me this is where Queen truly begins. (9.4) ★★★★½
One of Queen's best albums. "KIller Queen" and "Stone Cold Crazy" are highlights. 4 stars
3,5 beter dan verwacht
Lots of fun to hear earlier Queen. This one’s all about contrast—big, over-the-top moments mixed with gritty rock. It’s messy, but the kind of messy that works. Reminds me of T. Rex with a bit more drama. Feels like it’s fighting for attention, and somehow that works.
surprising amount of variety from Queen that I wasn't expecting. There was some funk, some punk, some ballads (obviously), and just an overall fun and classic feel to this alubm.
insane electric guitar riffs. insane drumming. insane vocal range and vocal layering.
This album made me realize I don’t know Queen at all! Lots of unexpected sounds here, worth listening again to really appreciate it.
Really interesting. Especially the vocals that weren't Freddy
Great album goes quick short songs easy listening to and sets tone for better Queen albums.
Never been much of a Queen-head, per se. Don't get me wrong, I've listened to some of their bigger hits and have enjoyed them, and I have tons of respect for the late Freddie Mercury who was undeniably a talented vocalist, but I've just never really had much of an urge to listen to a Queen album from start to finish as much as plenty of other artists. I figured that I would eventually get around to listening to one, just instead of out of any urges it'd just happen on a whim... seems like today is finally that day. My first impressions with Queen... is that I've been clearly missing out. Since this was their third album, it sounds like they're still trying to figure out their sound, but it's closer to the more "operatic" sound that can describe Queen's music: operatic with a rock twist. Freddie's great, as expected, but the other band members like drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon show themselves to be talented in their own right. But of course, there's Brian May. Just the opening track alone is a showcase as to why he's one of the all-time guitarist greats, and even outside of that track, he shows himself to being capable of busting out some killer guitar solos like it's nothing. Quite the first impression, overall, and not a bad way to start off listening to these 1,001 albums. Favorite Track: "Killer Queen" Least Favorite Track: "Dear Friends"
Queen has always been a weird band to me. I really like a lot of their stuff, but there’s also some of their stuff that just seems silly and even stupid. But this album is mostly good stuff I would say.
It’s Queen. It’s a really good Queen album. No notes.
Did not know any of those songs before
Very fun and heavy rock album. I hadn't listened to a full Queen album before but this was pretty good from front to back. Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy are the highlights for me.
I love how the album is structured. You can really tell when its the outro or that the intro was a intro! music wise are their some highs and the music is theatrical what is to me much the sound of queen. Wouldn't consider myself a fan of the queens but they are iconic and through the sound recognizable. (3.5/5.0)
Queen at their majestic best.
Not a masterpiece, like one of their later releases, still a very decent early Queen album
pretty solid
Pretty good stuff.
NICE RIFF IN THE FIRST ONEEEE
The album where Queen started to find their stride and sound. This one is fun and has a large variety of styles (much like the later Queen albums), but still has some of the proggy stylings of Queen and Queen II. No skippers, cool album.
This album really feels unhateable. It's full of epic riffs and fantastic vocal performances, and of course is just so amazingly theatrical.
Den gode queen lyd, teatralsk, glammet
This was a good time!
The first Queen album I've heard in its entirety, this is a great album. I only know the hits but I really enjoyed this.
Quite a lot heavier than I was expecting! Feels a little overproduced at times. Still very enjoyable!
One of my favourite ever queen songs is Killer Queen; but I also have never really listed to queen outside of the hits. It was great to listen to how this album develops from the very first song. Freddie’s voice is incredible.
It's Queen
Finally a good Queen album. I mentioned it before, but I really feel like this band is seriously overplayed in mainstream nowadays. It's hard to escape, impossible to hide from them. But fortunately there are records like Sheer Heart Attack, that maybe with exception of Killer Queen didn't feature in the endless waves of commercials and movies with Queen music. It's a pretty good and very well-made album, great opening song and just a solid set of numbers later on. I'm not a fan of the band, but I guess I like Brian May's style, Brighton Rock really shows his genius. Freddy good as ever, very solid album.
4 great album
Wasn't familiar with this album, but enjoyed it a lot. It's without the musical/opera stuff that Queen tended to do later and which I don't dig that much.
u luk
First two tracks are absolute bangers, drops off a bit after that I think I prefer the harder tracks in this compared to the slower, softer ones Brian's guitar work is insanely good and the vocals are legendary - shocker, I know. They've definitely got better stuff but this is still a great album
Impressively varied, with some chunky riffs on places (for Queen)
Jäklar vad nice! Nån låt för långt kanske men annars ett kanonalbum. Älskar fan killer queen. Så jäkla coola ljud i den
Classic killer Queen. Insane guitar work from Brian May and of course stellar performances from Freddie Mercury. The whole band sounds great too of course, those are just the standouts. This one is always fun to revisit.
I have every album by Queen. As a band of songwriter's, they are amongst the very best of all time. Freddy Mercury's voice moves me in way that even other favorite singers cannot, singing such sensitively intimate and personal lyrics with such unabashed bravado and commitment. And as a frontman? NONE better. Although Queen are amongst the top echelon of my favorite bands, they have some of the best best songs but also the very worst bad songs. Each member contributed to their songwriting output, and some seem to have fallen for the idea that hard rock and metal was supposed to be about dragons and monsters and other such fantasy. It can get a little cheesy, but this openness to explore ideas is ultimately what made their songwriting so amazing. As for the albums, it's hard to find one that perfect from beginning to end. "Hey guys, I just want to jam a bit by myself--like I do when I warm up--in the middle of 'Brighton Rock,' ok?" "Sure, Brian! As long as I can sing 'Now I'm Here, Now I'm There' and pan it all over the place to mess with people's heads on 'Now I'm Here'." "Brilliant!" "Killer Queen", "Stone Cold Crazy", and "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" encapsulate the styles and sophistication that will go on to become Queen's identity, though each song on Sheer Heart Attack has something memorable and unique about it. There seems to have been an effort to have a first side focused on hard rock while the second is more relaxed, trying different styles, arrangements, and some slower songs. "In the Lap of the Gods" is epic, and they deliver on it. Good album. "An invitation you can't decline."
Everything that makes Queen great is on full display here.
Great! 4/5
Listening to this album in its entirety it is clear the stage is set for for everything to come. Every member of this group is at the top of their game. Freddie Mercury's talent is on display and Brian May shows off his versatility and virtuosity.
Still love all the excess and fun they’re having genre wise
Low band of 4. I absolutely love Queen but this one is absolutely not their best. Starts very strong with the albums two hits, Brighton Rock and the phenomenal Killer Queen. Tenement Funster then segueing into a bit of a medley until lap of the gods which I think is definitely one of the weaker tracks. Stone Cold Crazy brings it right back up to speed as a third hit from this one but the rest of the album from here is fairly well a non event. I will say that I really enjoyed Bring Back That Leroy Brown - bit of a silly one. The usual fantastic instrumentation and harmonies you’ll find on just about every Queen record, this just isn’t their best material for the most part, but hey who am I to talk, my favourite Queen album is the Flash Gordon soundtrack.
The hits band to end all other hits band. One that is mostly remembered in the public consciousness for songs that are used in stadiums and car commercials. And also having obnoxious orchestral covers in trailers for dogshit movies, It's a shame too because Queen albums are fantastic and have a lot more going for them than just upbeat advertiser-friendly music that costs an arm and a leg to get licensed. Sheer Heart Attack is a reminder that their best work does not merely extend to the songs that you have heard a million times. Mercury's vocals are fantastic, May's guitar is always recognisable and is played to a tasteful amount. There are some filler songs in here that don't hold up that well on multiple listens but the album as a whole works very well. Highlights: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Flick Of The Wrist, In The Lap Of The Gods (both versions), She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)
typical queen album. pretty good but i feel like they have better albums
Like pretty much all Queen, it's solid.
My notes were lost. Enjoyed a lot
Master of Seventies Queen, heavy and energic: very representative of the Zeitgeist, remains one of the masterpieces of the decade.
Good. So much guitar!
I had a bit of a chaotic day yesterday, so I wasn't able to digest this as thoroughly as I would have liked to. But there's so much here and what I was able to grok kind of blew me away, so I'm gonna go ahead and say this is at least a 4. Also, I had no idea the other members of the band ever sang lead. They're not bad. They're not Freddie, but they're not bad.
Duh
Rockin' and very art rock sound. It reminded me of Rocky Horror music.
I like Queen, but to my mind, this album has a mix of strong and weak tunes. I think I will add it to my Tidal library, but it's not quite a five-star winner for me.
Naar mijn mening het beste Queen album. Brighton Rock is de ideale opener en ja, dat heeft het ook wel deels te danken aan de coole scène in Baby Driver. Maar daarnaast ook Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy en Now I'm Here. Allemaal knallers. Maar toch geen 5 sterren. Queen heeft veel 5-ster nummers, maar albums, meh. 4.4
I do enjoy Queen, the full-meal-deal-band with great vocals, killer guitars and a rocking rhythm section plus great song writing! I've listened to the entire album before but it's been awhile. The album gets out of the gates fast with "Brighton Rock" then rolls into one of my Top 5 Queen songs in "Killer Queen" which has such a strong visualization component as you can see her in your mind after such a vivid description. This isn't loaded with radio hits like other albums but it's all quality stuff with that Queen flair. "Tenement Funster" (great vocal by Roger, you gotta wonder why he didn't get more lead vocal duties), "Flick Of the Wrist", "Lily Of The Valley", "Misfire", are all solid rock songs! The only other hit was "Stone Cold Crazy" which Metallica covered years later and still gets a considerable amount of airplay. Overall a very solid record with hard rock, pop, mellow songs, an upbeat ditty ("Bring Back Leroy Brown"), crazy good guitar work and an uplifting vibe. I prefer "The Game" as far as favorite albums go, but there's no filler on Sheer Heart Attack. It's worthy of a Top 1001 spot.
Brighton Rock is the most goofy track of all time at first, but pops off once you get to know it Killer Queen is the bomb!!!! Tenement Fuster I don't care for but it still pretty good Flick of the Wrist is really good, very notable Lap of the Gods is also goofy ahh at first but then it pops off, the revisited version is also pretty cool then a lot of the album isn't really notable but I still like it enough to give it a 4 overall
7.5/10 What a contrast with the last album - Led Zepelin IV - which was not for me and too self important. Here we have another album that is hard rock - albeit with a poppy edge - that is so much more enjoyable due to the band realising that music can be fun. Mercury’s vocals are of course amazing, but I really enjoyed May’s guitar work. The trademark layered harmonies are great, really raise this over some of the other rock music of this era This album’s influence is still being heard today Best: Now I’m Here
very solid album, memorable songs and a breath of fresh air after listening to back in black lol
Queen has such a unique sound. Killer Queen a standout track here. You can hear that they are on the path getting closer to the sound most identified with them. Freddie seems a bit subdued here and the production a little flat at times. Will revisit.
Classic choice but without much surprise.
First Queen appearance on this list. Aural hints of what’s to come for one of the most original bands. RIP Freddy.
Pretty damn good!
Awesome!
Great album!
Decent Queen album
Some really great songs, and some not so great. Overall, I like Queen a lot.
Så mycket energi
Great album.
01) Brighton Rock - 8,0 02) Killer Queen - 10,0 03) Tenement Funster - 7,5 04) Flick Of The Wrist - 7,5 05) Lily Of The Valley - 9,0 06) Now I'm Here - 9,5 07) In The Lap Of The Gods - 8,5 08) Stone Cold Crazy - 7,5 09) Dear Friends - 8,5 10) Misfire - 7,5 11) Bring Back That Leroy Brown - 7,5 12) She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes) - 8,5 13) In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited - 10,0 TOTAL: 8,42 (84/100)
Was smiling the whole time listening to this. You can tell they had fun making this album.
I generally regarded Queen as a Greatest-Hits type band (excepting maybe A Night At The Opera and The Game), but I feel this may have begun to shift my opinion of that. Queen had so singular a sonic signature that the moment their acolytes (read: a band like The Struts) begin to approach, it sounds like shallow aping.
Really good album! It's pretty rockin' - not really a bad song on it. Killer Queen is the hit here and is probably the first song I ever heard from Queen. My favorites are (in album order): Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, and Misfire. I am ambivalent about Lily Of the Valley, Dear Friends, Bring Back That Leroy Brown and The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited. In The Lap Of The Gods is strange and the song I liked least.
I actually really enjoyed this one. To me, Queen had kinda turned into trendy white girl music. Ever since that movie came out, I'd pretty much stopped listening to them. That's all to say it was great to kinda rediscover them. Other than Killer Queen, all these songs were new to me. It felt very British, very anti-industrial, and very explosive. Great listen, although it is not really my favorite kind of music. Found "Now I'm here", to probably be my favorite. Edit: there's something real special in how the album ends. Lap of the Gods revisited just feels 'great' don't know how to describe it
a phenomenal album. big fan of "killer queen" and "flick of the wrist" especially
Queen was never going to be lower than a four.
Very solid album. Big fan of Killer Queen especially.
Queen good
Tremendo
There are 2 types of people in this world. People who enjoy listening to Queen, and liars
the first queen album I bought when it came out still a great listen
Fun album from earlier in Queen's history. I didn't recognize any song on here except Killer Queen, yet you can hear their style coming through in full.
It was very good
IS THAT A JOJOS REFERENCE (banger album)
Very engaging. Normally when I'm listening to an album, there's points when my mind wonders elsewhere for a bit, but it couldn't do so here. Nothing ever felt repetitive and there was always new and unexpected parts coming in later in the songs
Not as good as A Night at the Opera, but still enjoyable. Love “Stone Cold Crazy” and “In the Lap of the Gods… Revisited” are real highlights for me. Straight up heavy metal! I do wish they had made all of the shorter side 2 songs go together, Abbey Road-style. “She Makes Me” also would have been better with Freddie on lead vocals.
Awesome
They are classic rock!
A really good album. Some new Queen songs I’ve not heard before. Definitely a top 3 album so far. But a little bit too all over the place and slightly disjointed for me to warrant giving it a 5 for me.
what a „Killer Queen“! und auch sonst hört man in jedem stück was Queen ausmacht. mir gefällt es, aber da war noch luft nach oben was auf späteren alben auch genutzt wurde.
Queen's legacy goes beyond the hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend, and We Are the Champions. In their 3rd album relase Sheer Heart Attack you can hear the differentiation of rock n'roll blitz with operatic and fantastical elements. This remains on top of my list of Queen albums. Unique, raw, unrefined blues based English rock. So fucking good.
I was sooo happy when I heard the first track. I thought maybe no theatrical stuff on this one, but I was wrong. Buut there was a nice balance between the harder rock and that stuff. This is the best I’ve heard from them so far.
This is where Queen really started showing off all their different sides. You’ve got the theatrical flair of Killer Queen, which is just pure fun every time, and then you’ve got Stone Cold Crazy—fast, loud, and way ahead of its time. It’s no surprise Metallica picked it up for their covers. That song rips. The album bounces all over the place, but in a good way. There’s glam, hard rock, even some proto-metal in the mix. Not every track is a banger, but when it hits, it hits hard. Great energy throughout, and a big step up from the first two albums.
Some great Queen songs, but together as an album very hit or miss.
Definitely enjoyed. Was surprised by the amount of instrumental.
One of their best, most creative and diverse albums, really rocks as well
Familiar with Killer Queen, but didn't know any other song. I liked it well enough to listen to it again.
This is actually the first time I've listened to a full Queen album. I only recognized Killer Queen, which is a great track. The rest of the album left me kind of disappointed honestly. Still good, but I guess my expectations were high.
One of Queen's more eclectic albums (pretty high bar, TBH). I was under the distinct impression that "Good Company" from A Night at the Opera was the only time Brian May ever broke out the ukelele.
Decent album. Of course I knew killer queen but I was surprised to hear songs that I actually enjoyed more than that single.
not my favorite Queen album
Really impressed with this album, Queen seems to be a "victim" of their 2 biggest hits, 2 biggest overplayed songs in the history of recorded music. Definitely has encouraged me to look at their back catalog and see what else they have. Added 7 songs to the 1001 Experience Playlist
A couple of fillers on this (I'm looking at you "Bring Back That Leroy Brown"!), but overall it's still a great album.
Much better than the first couple Queen albums. More rocking songs and more familiar Queen sounds. I’m not sure why this album isn’t talked about as much as Day at the Races or Night at the Opera.
This a pretty damn good prog/hard rock album. Significantly ahead of its time.
While the whole thing gives theater kid, it kinda bangs. May's skills on guitar are insanely unique and add so much character to the band. Mercury is obviously iconic, though it can't save him from being a little too weird on a few tracks. Favorites are Stone Cold Crazy, Misfire, and Brighton Rock
I maintain my belief that Queen is not really an albums band. They have great hits, but some of the deeper cuts in here are a little forgettable. I would call this a good album, but it doesn’t do enough to push it over the edge. Favorite songs are Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, In The Lap Of The Gods, and Stone Cold Crazy.
Great, just not Queen's best. I loved the continuity in the album, and yes, Killer Queen is that good
Very good album throughout with only 1 real hit song
I steady began to enjoy this one more as it went on. The Resistance by Muse had it’s foundations set in 1974 by a band called Queen! This is glam rock 101. Not too many standout moments but I really loved the big dramatic finale.
One of my earliest memories of owning my own cassette tape was the Encino Man soundtrack. I listened so much that I wore it out. One of the songs was Queen’s Stone Cold Crazy. I love Queen. But for that memory alone, it’s a 4.5.
Freddie is my favorite vocalist of all time. News of the World is a better album than Sheer Heart Attack, but I still really like this album.
Soft spot for queens theatrical/rock queen sound, especially with the harder rock influences of early queen albums. Still a lot of that classic queen loveably cheesy sound they found on the later records. Nonsense solo on Brighton rock, loved the use of delay to self harmonise. Absolutely loved the super fuzzy guitar compliment to the vocals, and the overall harmonic narrative. Compositionally just beautiful. Flick of the wrist was uncharacteristically classic metal (obviously with that queen tilt). Loved Freddie’s interpretation of that grandiose classic metal snarly vocals in the verses.
Never actually listened to a queen album in full but was exactly as I’d hoped, fun and theatrical Fave tracks: Killer Queen Tenement Funster>Flick Of The Wrist>Lily of the Valley - absolutely love when songs seamlessly transition to the next on an album so this 3 song run is amazing In the lap of the gods (+ revisited)
Killer Queen goes crazy, but really it's surprising that we don't hear more songs off this album on the radio.
geweldig plaatje van een groep die later zou verliezen in bombast
Fun- classic queen
Only familiar song is Killer Queen which is an all time great. Album can get a little theatrical at times, which is somewhat expected, but it did detract to my listening pleasure. This is probably a 4.25 to 4.5.
Ah, Queen! One of my all-time favorite bands thanks to watching Wayne's World too many times in the 90s. I love Killer Queen, and Sheer Heart Attack goes hard. The rest is solid Queen.
Classic Queen 4/5
My dad once said that Queen were a singles band and didn't hold up well over a full album. Hate to admit he was kinda right. This album isn't bad, but it's not as great as their greatest can be.
I like killer queen
A bit like Abba, Queen made an unbroken string of consistently fabulous singles, full of clever musical hooks and superb vocals. However, their albums tend to be patchy affairs, featuring a few singles, a few could be singles, some interesting experiments and a fair bit of deja vu. But to be fair, they are never boring and there is plenty of flair in the arrangements, production and superb guitar and vocals harmonies throughout. The highlight is easily 'Killer Queen' but I also enjoyed 'Tenement Funster'
Despite a couple of lacklustre tracks, it's a good album! You can tell they'd started to experiment with recording/production techniques, refining that "Queen" sound.
Strong album with some ridiculously fast pace, loved it!
I LOVEEEE QUEEN YAY !!!!! killer queen is one of my most favourite songs ever !!!!!!!!!
pre good 👍
epic, fav. queen. album, not PERFECT 4/5 perhaps a CHEEKY 4.5/5
Really good album. Has stone cold crazy
Great tunes by Queen
Endlich mal wieder Rock. Typisch Queen, aber da ist noch Luft nach oben.
This was a treat. I'd dare to say that this record was a bit more experimental for Queen than from what I've heard on others? I could be wrong. But there were a lot of cool ideas on this record. Amazing vocals. Amazing guitar tone. The guitar sold were tasty too. As if they had purpose to the song and not just wankery showmanship.
sheer heart attack 8.5/10 glam rock babyyy :D this album has some songs that you couldn’t put on any other queen albums.. this is such an energetic, colourful and vibrant album.. they had finally (sorta) found their own sound, and hell they can write a pop tune! brian just goes crazy on this album! this is a great guitar driven record and i’m not saying that only cuz the great big huge guitar solo brighton rock lands on this album but also because literally all the other songs have such tasteful guitar solos dude they are done so well & every guitar note on this record is executed perfectly p.s the first ever speed/thrash metal song lands on here too! bknz scc & p.s 2 this album gets psychedelic af at some points and they work exceptionally well brighton rock 8.5 killer queen 9 tenement funster 9 flick of the wrist 9.5 lily of the valley 7.5 now i’m here 8 in the lap of the gods 9 stone cold crazy 9 dear friends 8 misfire 7.5 bring back that leroy brown 8.5 she makes me 7 in the lap of the gods… revisited 8.5
Off the wall pop rock Tempos and keys go loco As guitar triumphs
Brilliant! Even the weird cooky songs are genius. You can hear the experimentation in the songs. Love it.
"Brian says he wants to overdub another guitar part. Should we let him?"
Actually really enjoyed that. Queen know how to write a memorable tune and are never lazy, despite being terminally uncool somehow.
never really listened to this one before. Obviously know the hits, but never listened to the rest of the album. I really really enjoyed it. Even more so than News of the World...
Queen = Elton John + Black Sabbath. There’s no reason that should work, yet it does. It’s slightly jarring to go from the epic “Stone Cold Crazy” to the hymn-ish “Dear Friends.” And what is “Bring Back that Leroy Brown??” It defies genre. I guess all of that goes to show their range and agility as a band. Some of this leans more metal than I would like (gimme that operetta!), but it’s bold and creative and I can see why love of their music has endured for so long. 4.0
Did Queen invent thrash metal?! Leroy Brown had 70 vocal tracks. Taylor on the super high notes. May modifing equipment for bespoke effects. And no other musicians used. Christ, this is a great band. The album has a lot of rockers, and even in the genre change ups, it's energetic and fun. "She makes me" might be a lowlight, but probably because the rest of the album is so strong. 4.4
I now understand why I'd mostly only heard greatest hits. That large vocal range is overused and the stereo effects are not great with headphones. Still, some decent riffs.
great album had great gutar and vocals
So, I was always under the impression that the norm for Queen was Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen. Listening to this album proved me somewhat wrong. To be sure, there are show tunes in this collection, but there were a lot of solid rock songs as well. The guitar work is stellar. I’ll be picking out a few tracks for mixed playlists. Low 4
Very queen, quite like.
After being subjected to Van Halen a couple of albums ago, I can confidently say that THIS is how you do flamboyant guitar rock. When I was a wee lad, I wore out the Killer Queen segment of my Queen's Greatest Hits cassette. That song still holds up. I had no idea the rest of the album would be so good. God damn! Now I'm Here is a standout non-radio track to me that could have easily been on the radio.
Worth the listen. Impressive album with a lot of cool songs. Vocals-wise generally not what I go for or go out of my way to listen to, but Queen has a unique sound that I was glad to experience. Particularly liked Tenement Funster and Stone Cold Crazy.
Not much to say, a pretty solid album. I love Freddie Mercury's voice.
A rousing romp of classic rock.
Well it’s not an amazing album but when it’s good it’s stunning - just a couple of songs lift this record amazingly. The rest of the record is well balanced but the minute Killer Queen kicks in you know you have a winner.
the album where Queen got less progressive and more metal and pop oriented. kind of defined where the rest of their career would go
Was not expecting so many bangers from songs I’ve never heard of
Niet mn favo album van hen, maar heeft mn liefde voor Queen zeker weer aangewakkerd, wat een band
1e Queen album Goeie hoor Brighton Rock, shoutout naar Baby Driver
It certainly is more than I expected, as I read on someone else's review Queen is band victim of its own success. Since I have heard all of the hits I never thought of listening to their albums as a whole but now that I did I am glad. I think the absolute star on this album is none other than Roger Taylor, increidible drumming, harmonies and compositions after all on of my favorite tracks is pretty much all him except for lead guitar maybe. "Tenement Funster" is a great song and so are the other ones which are not necessarily hits like "In the lap of the gods" and "Dear friends". Had a lot of fun with this album.
Already heard this one! -this is Queen's break-through album -its a classic -its rocking -Freddie delivers some awesome performences -the solo on Brighton Rock is one of the greatest solos of all time, point blank period -some of the best Queen songs are on this thing -favorite songs: Brighton Rock (<3), Killer Queen, Flick Of The Wrist, Lily Of The Valley, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy (<3), Bring Back That Leroy Brown, In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited (<3) -least favorite song: Dear Friends
maailman paras bändi... heh, objektiivisesti väärin... voi olla suosikki... parasta nähnykkään... albumi pitäisi kuulostaa jättimäiseltä, massiiviselta, pönäkältä, mutta produktio jää latteaksi... se on voi voi... varieteeettia on lyhyeen pätkään saatu hyvin, on vähän kolumnista A, sekä myöskin kolumnista B.... vanha amerikan proverbi jos et tiedä mitä tarkoittaa, olet ehkä vitun tyhmä. in finland we have proverbs that make you think.. not just saying thing in other way... numero nelosta tiskille, baarimikko. brighton rock
No skips, all killer no filler.
Every song was great , easy listening too
Queen are absolute legends. Tried not to compare to A Night at The Opera, but it's hard cause it's one of the all time best albums!
Great album, possibly one of my favorites.. "Brighton rock" and "now I'm here" particularly
Earlier Queen rocked harder than I thought. Less Freddy Mercury than I knew them for but very good!
Quite good, love Killer Queen :)
This queen album had more focus on guitar which was cool.
Queen's older albums are great because I'm always finding new favorites. Flick of the Wrist is a standout.
Solid Queen Album. Variety of sounds and themes. Freddie's voice is worth 2 stars on it's own.
Pretty good, there’s other Queen albums that are better.
First song was a bit heavy on the falsetto, which I did not love. Killer Queen is a bop always. Tenement Funster had a real good beat to it. I love the kind of creepy intro to Flick of the Wrist, and then turns into a song that is reminiscent of RHPS vibes. Something I really enjoyed about this album is the seamless transition between songs. Each song flows into one another, which is refreshing from the intro/outro format of more modern music. Lilly of the Valley was nice, but sort of boring. Now I'm Here is much more impactful both musically and lyrically. Very fun song. The vocalization in the intro for In The Lap of Gods was incredibly jarring. Stone Cold Crazy is wacky and fast-paced. Dear Friends is a bit out of place, but a needed energy reprieve maybe. Misfire feels a bit boppy in a good way. Bring Back Leroy Brown is almost a comical change of tone to me. Really fun album that kept me guessing all the way through.
I don’t think I knew about this album. Good stuff. Bohemian Rhapsody still takes the cake. The gay guy with the teeth does it again tho!
тяжелый гитарный рок семидесятых и ростки фирменного поп-рока queen 80-х на пластинке к прослушиванию 3.5
Grande
Like Queen’s catalog as a whole, this album is hits and misses. But when they hit, they really hit and demonstrate everything that makes them legends. And when they miss, at least it’s still interesting.
To my surprise it was my first time I listened to this album. I love the more hard rock and glam rock direction the band took on this album, but it is a stylistically varied set of songs which makes it more fun. The musicianship is great, there is not only Mercury as lead singer but the other members, too. I liked this album more than the more theatrical and overblown Bohemian Rhapsody that was released after this album. It should be a 4.5.
Fun album, maybe I'm biased because I know some of these songs already but there Re some great songs on here and it's not too long so it doesn't get boring.
Whoo yeah...that was a fun one! Never actually listened to a Queen album before and always thought the hits are all you need to pay mind to. Wrong...this was great. A phantasm of a rock opera that kept me engaged. Slow songs were short and sweet. Guitar riffs, harmonies, pianos, Freddie belting it, and some weirdness thrown in. Opened the door to more Queen album listens for me...3.7
Really enjoyed the listen. I thought I knew what to expect from Queen from their 20+ radio hits, but Shear Heart Attack exceeded expectations. This is a solid rock album with all the necessary Queen flair to help make it unique and stand the test of time. Mercury and company are great as usual and pretty effectively weave 40 minutes of tracks together. First side of the album is very strong. While the second half fizzles towards the end there are relatively few low points. I suspect that Queen will show up on 1001 a couple more times which will be welcomed with open ears. What can be said about Queen that hasn't already been touched on? Their legacy has been evident pretty much my whole life with constant exposure to their greatest hits, references to Live Aid, countless karaoke renditions of Bohemian Rhapsody, etc. While I would say I'm pretty attuned to Queen, they aren't a band I sat down and listened to their albums in unison. I'm glad that Sheer Heart Attack showed up on this list as it gave me a perfect excuse to listen. As much as I am a Queen fan, it unfortunately has been diluted over the past couple of years in the wake of Bohemian Rhapsody movie which was an absolute shiteburger. It's hard not to see it as an unnecessary smudge on an otherwise great legacy. Perhaps diving into their albums will help rekindle my former enjoyment. 3.65 stars
Had a blast
Queen is a supremely talented band. A band I’ve underrated my whole life. Sheer Heart Attack I believe is the first of its kind, a hard rock album that’s more like a theatrical performance than a bar band. 8.3/10
First time hearing this album. Aside from Killer Queen the other songs are all new to me. Really liked Brighton Rock and Flick of the wrist. The ablum shows the depth of a great rock band, arguably the greatest rock band of all time
guy from jojos ☠
There were many styles that were fused very well into one. It was complete from beginning to end. It was not full of the annoying, overplayed songs, so it was a fresh of breath air for nonQuenn listeners or people who dislike Queen
Love most Queen music and love Freddy's voice. Not sure why I'm not giving this one a 5.
IVE LISTEND TO THIS BEFORE! I think I like it more this time! Great
My name is Yoshikage Kira
Not the best Queen album however some excellent songs on the album
Some of Queens best songs are on this lp, but some of the songs here are also very bland. Still a great album 4/5
Yes
Just some good fun rock, nothing negative to say at all. The closing track is my favourite from the whole album. It's a good debut album, but their following albums are generally better.
never really been super into queen but have always had time for this album. brighton rock goes so hard.
Where did they get the audacity to open with such a good track.
Demented from the start. Silly, theatrical, melodramatic and goddamn fabulous. Hard to find fault with this band. Though, the only person who should be singing is Mr. Mercury. There is no reason for a Queen song, without him on lead vocals. 4/5
Got an excellent opening track with Brighton Rock. This truthfully may be one of the most "rockin" of the Queen albums with so much riffing, great cymbal crash mutes and general virtuosity in the playing. You still get the dramatic/theatrical with "now I'm here" and, maybe Queen's best song (sorry Bohemian Rhapsody) "Killer Queen." But also what the eff is "tenement funster" where Freddie isn't singing?? I'm into "Lap of the gods" and "bring back that leroy brown" as deeper cuts. Solid overall queen record.
Deep in the days when Queen liked to sprinkle a note of prog rock in the mix, 'Sheer Heart Attack' is all adrenaline and no pop, yet somehow manages to sound accessible and slick.
It’s early Queen and Killer Queen is amazing. The theatrics, like in In the Lap of Gods, is fun. I might come back to it.
Really interesting album. I've never listed to Queen outside of the hits but the whole album was strong. Quite a few songs reminded me of Tommy (The Who)
It’s good, nothing stands out other than this is where Queen defined their sound
Brighton rock! Very fun energetic album but the catchiness kinda dies down towards the second half. Leroy brown is just kinda weird. Overall, enjoyable. 7/10.
Ah, Freddie -- I think this is the album where you truly became a rock star. His range of vocal talent's on full display here. The playing, as always, has that "Queen sound" with the overdubbed guitars and vocal harmonies. Stone Cold Crazy remains the seed crystal for the existence of thrash metal. Things is, I've seen video so many of these songs live but haven't heard the studio versions. The live versions of these songs are at another level. (Seriously, pull the YouTube for "Queen Live at the Rainbow" and compare the versions of "Now I'm Here." Still, such good shit here. Enjoy.
This 1 starts out predictably spazzy as fuck but not for nothing, it continues as an engaging, diverse, and fun album through and through. So much creative ferocity on this album and a nice example of a formerly proggy band using their musical intelligence to create smart rock that actually lands with a wide-reaching audience.
Suprised I've never listened to this one in full. Full of good songs, and a little more rock n' roll than other queen albums which I liked.
