Reviews (page 6 of 8)

I'm intrigued by the cover artwork. Does GM have a BO problem? Or does his music just stink? (Ha-ha). The jury is out (buying some air freshener)

The pop is strong with this one, hhmngh.

I was kind of surprised at how many songs on this album I remember being radio hits back in the day. However, this album felt very dated. I was kind of bored after a few songs. 6/10.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected to, which is why this project is so much fun. The title track is such a banger and many of the other tracks were great, too. I would have given this a 4 but I think it's about 3 songs too long. Also, I Want Your Sex really didn't need part II. But thumb's up for this album. The '80s production actually worked in its favor, and the arrangements were, for the most part, pretty lean and awesome. He's a good singer and the harmonies were pretty tight and interesting. Glad I got the chance to give this a listen.

Starts off really strong but falls flat really fast. Are classic albums just albums with some hits on it? Because except for the hits this does not mean much as an album.

Amazing combination of dark and honest lyrical contentwith incredibly light-hearted, blissfully corny, and over the top songs. I only knew the hits coming into this, so am surprised at how deep the album goes and how wide-ranging it is. George Michael appropriates huge swaths of the 70s & 80s pop sound pallet: the kitschy achey breaky heart country sounds on Faith, the ghostbusters keyboard laying it down on I Want Your Sex, the Procul Harum-style organ vamp on One More Try, the Parliament space-funk bass on Hard Day; the minor-key Pet Shop Boys synth on Hand to Mouth; the Dire-Straights guitar/horns poprock of Look at Your Hands; the Peter Gabriel response song Monkey. He ends up creating some exuberant pure-pop that's moves across genres and styles - that mix keeps the album interesting from song to song. The coherent strand is his singing/lyrics that really sell it and mean it doesn't come across as ironic pastiche - he's having fun with it, but it isn't a joke. It's pop, so the vocal performance is the star: ranging with tight control from whispered intimacies to wailing lovesongs to anthemic affirmation. The songs are all maybe a minute too long.

As a man in his 40s, I'd be fascinated to hear a younger person's opinion of this. In places, it's great. Faith and Father Figure are two of the greatest pop hits of all time, and it has a variety lacking from a lot of pop albums of the era. George's voice is always incredible too. And yet... Some of the work that was so daring at the time now just sounds silly to me. I Want Your Sex is laughable. Equally, some of the lyrics have a very different edge since he came out. What had previously sounded innocent feels a little predatory. On top of that, the production feels massively dated, and not in a cool, retro way. As a person, I hugely admire George Michael. As a musician, I prefer his later work.

I was just thinking this list needed more straight up pop music, and here we go. I knew the hits, and some are better than others. I liked Faith and Monkey. Father Figure was OK. Didn't care for I Want Your Sex or One More Try (never knew the title of that one - it could have been called Teacher for all I knew. The non-hits were somewhat forgettable. In general, when George Michael uses his breathy vocals, it kind of creeps me out. I'd rather listen to Wham, actually.

Actually surprisingly a good record - good production, songs (except for the rambling about monkeys?) and length - it would be. 4 star if it’s my genre but it’s not.

Algunos ritmos bailables. Algún que otro hit muy recordado

2.8 Classic horny 80s album, nothing special faves: faith

George Michael isn’t my personal taste, but this is an album that deserves to be on the list.

Not my vibe. Airy bambasity.

This reminds me of Chip Skylark's My Shiny Teeth and Me for some reason. I can only really describe this as inoffensive '80s music. Not much more to say about it. It's alright, nothing really jumped out to me in a significant way. A sold 3/5

Good album.

An ok album, very front loaded with the well known stuff, it drops off in my interest as it started to sounds samey. still I didn't want to skip any songs.

Solid pop album

Rip George

Ambient 5: Music for Public Toilets

George Michael's split from Andrew Ridgeley (the other half of Wham!) would require him to make a definitive statement of his own sound. Wham! was sunny, friendly, maybe even a little juvenile. A George Michael debut had to be more mature. The pure, lovey nature of Wham! has been molted in exchanged for a sexual, sensual man who is perhaps a little too well-groomed for his public image (see: Sexuality and relationships section of his Wikipedia page). This is emphasized by Faith's focal point, which is the 9-minute I Want Your Sex (Parts 1 & 2), the longest track on the album and the most unabashed as well. Speaking more on Faith, side A opens strong with the titular track and his biggest hit off the album. It's a fun little track that bops along and highlights Michael's best qualities. The rest of side A plays out pretty well, with the perhaps over-indulgent I Want Your Sex being the most inspired choice. Side B has back-to-back songs with programmed drums, which distracted me more than I would've liked. Such a bizarre album. I don't think Faith is bad. I think it starts strong and ends strong! But a lot of the middle parts are tedious and makes me not want to listen again. Such is life.

Faith and Father Figure are great tracks, but that is about it. As these were the opening tracks, the rest of the album sounded a bit dull and sterile and very redolent of late 80s production values. not that special in my humble opinion

Not bad, not great. Some funky beats, other songs too long.

Faith is an absolute classic of a song. I just wish the rest of the album got the heights that it got to. The rest is okay but there is so much more there that could have been on this album, but having consulted the list, his better album is on the list so happy days.

Faith and Father Figure are decent tracks. I want your sex sounds like it belongs on PBS but instead of being about the virtues of reading it's about sex. Many of the beats have not aged terribly well. A very average 80s pop record. Kissing a fool was a nice way to end the album.

Always listened to faith when I was younger but there just isn’t enough good tracks on here

A really fun 80s pop romp, with a couple of flat-out classics. I think some of the material here suffers from being stretched out beyond its natural end point, which keeps it from being as tight and punchy as I would have liked. Look At Your Hands/Monkey/Kissing a Fool is a bit of a nightmare run on the record, and will keep me from coming back to the album in full. But for the most part, loved the camp fun of the production and George is mighty charismatic. Three and a half. Fave track: Hand to Mouth

This felt like a good pop record - one that I imagine was a pivotal moment in Michael’s maturing as an artist. The album starts off pretty strong and maintains that for the first half of the record I’d say. He has a sweetness and attitude in his voice that is pretty easy to eat up, and the openness in both sexual and sentimental fare is a win for sure. I felt it lost a bit of momentum in the second half. And honestly at times I felt like it drew a little too heavily on artists that inspired him (namely Prince), but overall very decent. Not sure how often I’ll be returning to this but still I’ll give it a three and a half. Fave track: One More Try

An alright pop album with some weaker songs. Not bad, not great.

I still standby the assertion that George Michael is vastly overrated. This album is clearly stealing heavily from MJ and Prince, he even went as far as to say he was looking to make a “black” album. Not sure that would play in 2022, but the 80s were a different time. Some songs have held up well (i.e. Faith, Father Figure, One More Try, Kissing a Fool), but others sound very dated as many 80s tracks do (i.e. I Want Your Sex, Monkey). Impressive that he played many of the instruments himself, but the drum machine usage hasn’t held up.

At first is was nice, but it bored me a little bit after a while.

Nice album

Loved the faster paced songs, bit bored at times but solid album.

Starts of strong but becomes a bit dull after a while

This album had a lot of moments within songs I liked, but not whole songs themselves. I think a big reason for that was how horny it was, which got old quick, and the lack of real instruments, instead opting for synthesized versions, save for Kissing A Fool, which was easily my favorite song. It just made the album feel incredibly dated and stretched out. So, when I give an album like this a three, it's purely due to one or two songs doing all the leg work, and not hating the rest of it. So, good job Faith, I guess. Light three.

Commercial pop with catchy tunes and some controversial lyrics. I enjoyed the first half more than the second half. It's that kind of well-made pop album that I usually listening to for 10-15 minutes and then musically it gets too simplistic to me and I get bored of it. This was the case with this album, too.

I remember this album when it was new and I was like 5 or 6 years old. We'd dance and jump off the couch sometimes skipping the record during "Faith" and then be disappointed when "Father Figure" came on because it was slow. It didn't matter as my mom would always turn it off anyway before "I want your sex" came on. We'd then want to hear the "other Michael" who if course was Michael Jackson. So I think it was today that I finally get to hear side B of the record. And yeah the album peaks with "Faith" but "Hard Day'' and "Monkey" are also jams.

Popballadeja ja sit muuten vaan poppia. Ei erikoista eikä hirveetä

George... You were fruity, you were fun. This album is missing some of that fruit juice. Too straight! But the first track rules. And the album cover is so sexy it's awesome. Good for you and rest in peace big man

one of the best voices ever. probably a 3.4

Highlights: "Monkey," "I Want Your Sex," "Hand to Mouth" In the scope of stuff we're evaluating, five years is a long time for someone to decide 'you know what, this Michael Jackson fellow might be on to something'. It's a successful synthesis of his heroes' successful acts -- even though Jackson and Prince get unfairly conflated all the time, George Michael does manage to really touch on both. We get bombastic funky gospel and breathy electropop while maintaining the timbre and sharp mixing of Freddie Mercury. And when he actually tries, his lyrics can be as earnest and cutting as any of them. It's not really his fault that his songs take fun hooks and wear out their welcome completely over 5-7 minutes, because that's how '80s electropop worked. But. When people talk about how George Michael influenced '90s boy bands, despite having no distinct stylistic contribution of his own to pop, that's like throwing entire genres of Jackson torchbearers like him under the bus. Bobby Brown? The System? New Edition? Zapp and Rodger? Commissioned? Who? But they're probably not wrong, because George Michael was an industry influence, not a musical one. Like Eminem. Like Elvis. He's a prototype of the Disney turn, an attractive fresh-faced star doing a 180 slut spin, with this disingenuous pretense carried on by Madonna that funk gospel is iconoclasm when that's just where gospel had been at for years. None of the things that made him stand out are an actual accomplishment.

Solid. Slow. Gay. * Hard Day * Hand to Mouth * Look at Your Hands

Top Gun vibes

It’s alright but most songs on it are forgettable

I respect this for being really popular at the time, but yeah, it didn't do much for me.

Not as good as you remember it.

3/5. A pretty solid pop album, lots of talk about sex but otherwise an enjoyable listen. Don’t think it’s perfect but it is fun.

Best: Faith Worst: Monkey

Prime 80s.

I don't think I've ever listened to Faith the song or the album. It's pop that is good but I haven't heard anything yet that makes me think damn. Yeah it's fine.

⭐ Monkey

His best one!

Some good hits and late 80's vibes, clear inspiration from Jackson.

80s pop. Fun to listen to something I haven't heard in a long time.

A couple of interesting songs, but mostly a bit meh. Probably for someone, but not for me.

Faith is of course a classic, but the rest was too sensual for me. It’s a good sound and I can see why it would be popular but not for me.

George Michael is basically the low rent Prince, but even the low rent Prince isn't that bad. I wouldn't seek this album out, but I don't hate it.

Lots of hits never got annoyed by it

It would be nice, if I could touch your body. No, not just anybody.

Not bad but I liked his other one better

Starts strong some drivel in the middle though

Good stuff though Father Figure is my least liked song of all time.

An ace single which is unfortunately not matched by the rest of the album. This project has definitely given me a better appreciation of George Michael as a notch above the cliché one-dimensional pop star. That being said, Listen Without Prejudice struck me as a much better rounded album. Here the production is just too rooted in 80s excess, and even while Michael is cute in his subversive hedonism, this subtlety is simply lacking in the ostentatious songwriting. A decent 80s pop album, but he would go on to do something much more special.

I enjoyed this, but it was a bit long in places. 3.49/5

As much as I like a lot of music associated with George Michael, I don't really get a big vibe for his Faith album. I know its his first solo album but it would only really be a good easy listening album if he had excluded I Want Your Sex Part 1. Part 2 was a better mix, with less repetitive lyric, but unfortunately we have all 9 minutes of Part 1 and Part 2. I Want Your Sex Part 1 is up there with Kings of Leon Your Sex is On fire... two tracks that bring out people of a certain age who imagine they are suddenly wearing a Harry Potter cloak of instant sex appeal as they throw cringeworthy bump and grind shapes on the dance floor.

It's George

such a horny album oh my god lol I want your sex (parts 1 and 2) are so horny it’s almost funny, but then again the album is full of boos and George Michael has amazing range as far as the vocals go so this was a pretty nice album overall

Would give an additional .5 if possible. Catchy tunes (not sure with the lyrics, if most are sexual). Stand outs are Faith, I want your sex, and Monkey. There's this funky sound at the Monkey a Capella that caught my attention too hahaha Will probably listen too.

I really liked half of the songs, I really didn't like the other half. Too....80s?

George Michael really wants my sex. Disco.

Much better than expected solely based on other reviews but not a bad album. Some song though like “I want your sex” really threw me off tho.

Benefit of the doubt for the first two songs, but a lot of this did not age well at all. Best track: Faith

The production was a big bang here to me. But as the album went on, it was a little too same. Call it an even 3.

This record may contain some of George Michael's most notable solo songs, but as an entire album it is a bit more uneven of an experience. While it leads off with three of his biggest songs, notably "Faith" and "Father Figure", the rest of the album begins to fade in impact and creativity. This reminds me of the all too common practice of having only two or so singles on a CD, and spreading out the better tracks across future albums as that was the music industry at the time. It worked when CDs were like $10.00, but it does leave a more plodding experience in the rest of the album.

Hats off for George successfully completely revamping his image with this album. This album didn't do much for me at the time, but it has aged pretty well. The songs are well written and performed.

Er... I guess this is the George Michael album to potentially include in a list such as this one given that it contains his most timeless hits "Faith", "I Want Your Sex" or "Monkey". The cheesy eighties sounds of the rest have aged a lot, obviously, but I guess you can find some relative charms to the different styles used throughout this LP, at least, even though it's not my thing. Number of albums left to review: 698 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 149 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 71 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 83

Like the other George Michael I got, it was fine. Nothing special. I'd never heard any of the songs on here so wasn't sure what to expect. It's fine.

So so good. ONe of my favorites! This, and Freedom 90, underscores how a sugar pop group - Wham! - didn't show the true talent.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, maybe something a little more mind-blowing, as this album has pretty legendary status which I have put off listening for quite awhile. I liked it, but nothing blew me away. Still, a good collection of songs. Maybe a reslisten would make it click a little more for me

Jesus Christ, 1987 George Michael was one horny man. The production is simply incredibly and crystal clear - both when it comes to the softer pop approaches and the more rock/funk inspired songs such as “Hard Day”. I fully appreciate the songwriting and the mix of grand and breathy vocals.. It just rarely hits me emotionally.

Propped up by great singles, slows down toward the end.

This is the first time I’ve played a full album by George Michael, I’ve always been aware of his music but mainly just the singles. This is an odd one. Bit of a hodge podge of influences/styles like he’s still finding his feet. Some sound a bit Madonna-y, some a bit Frankie Goes to Hollywood-y, some a bit INXS-y. I love Faith though. Top pop.

Faith is the debut album by English singer-songwriter George Michael. It is an extremely popular album, being certified diamond for over 25 million copies sold worldwide, and winning Album of the Year at the 31st Grammy Awards. It has been compared to Michael Jackson's Thriller by George Michael and critics, in terms of subject matter and sales. George Michael was inspired by R&B "black" music to make his overtly sexual pop album, and this resulted with him being the first white person to have an album at number 1 on the Billboard Top Black Albums chart. This was a beautiful pop/R&B/soul/rock album that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I can see (or should I say hear) why it was/is so popular around the world. Everyone should give this album a listen if they haven't already.

Faith was massive when I finished school in 1987 - I hated it. More receptive to it now, but still is not really my thing.

George Michael was for sure a talented guy. I don't mind this album. I definitely prefer the more soulful tunes and not as much the ones where it sounds like he's trying to channel Prince or Michael Jackson. Not my thing overall but it was good to listen to once. 3 stars.

Loved this album as a kid. Still stands up.

Okej pop. Monkey är bästa låten.

5/10. In 1987, we didn't have "therapy" or "anti-depressants", we had a 10 minute recording of George Michael telling us he wanted to have sex with us.

George Michael is a good singer. I like "Faith".

I don't hate the sound of this, but I find some of the lyrics to be...annoying? It's alright, but I wouldn't add it to my music library.

Although I appreciate his popularity at the time I was never a big fan of his music

3 really good songs mixed in with filler also, armpit album cover 3.5

Ok I deeply disliked Wham and GM in the 80s and 90s, corporate pop. But listening fairly he's clearly a proper songwriter. Not the only artists whose production in that era has not worn well, and only the ballads are really difficult to stick by. Others, good radio.

Pop. Un par de megahits. Ni fu ni fa.

only really knew Faith from this he do be sniffing tho

armpit smelling looking ass

Piacevole all'ascolto. Alcuni brani un po' sciacqua lattughe.

My girlfriend had this poster hanging on her wall back in 87, along with this album. I married that beautiful woman too! George Michael is an underrated artist with a number of excellent songs. There's some cheese and a couple WTFs, but overall good stuff. One More Try could be the song of me crying to win back my girl after being such a dick. Great song. Other good ones include Faith (check out Limp Bizkit version),Father Figure (but also kinda creepy), I want your sex and kissing a fool. Luke better not be too hard on this album or his mother may not be too happy. Good solid 3

There are three maybe four really good songs in this album, but the rest I'd have to chalk up to some pretty weak "blue-eyed soul". The approach to funk and pop is pretty cheap and underdeveloped in my opinion.

This album feels like something that was made by a gay man for gay men. I see some similarities between songs on this album and modern day "bops" loved by gay guys. Also, I definitely see where George Michael drew on Prince as an influence for this album, as it's full of sultry, sexy, and even funky beats and lyrics. Speaking of "bops", I thought a lot of the songs on this album fit that bill -- Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, Monkey, but most of the other songs, while baseline good, were kind of forgettable. Even the good songs don't quite live up to "Faith". In case you forgot, George Michael definitely wants your sex, and he makes it known again on the final track "A Last Request", which is kind of a boring finisher, but it is what it is. While not a perfect debut album, it has its merits and is enjoyable and just kind of sexy.

Slow dive and MBV are better

I wasn't a fan of George Michael when he was all over MTV. I Want Your Sex was soooo overplayed in the 80s and the lyrics are cheesy. But I was really surprised by how much I liked Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, so I was looking forward to listening to Faith with more open ears. Well, this is a good album, but didn't hit me like Listen Without Prejudice, which seemed like a much deeper album. Favorite tracks: Faith (great song, and the bass and guitar lines are really good), Hard Day (great groove), and Look at Your Hands (catchy track - Rolling Stones vibe). I liked the instrumentation on Sex pt. 2. Similarly, I like the music for Father Figure but lyrics like "I'll be your daddy" are just creepy to me. Monkey has cool music but really weird lyrics (I know it's about a monkey on your back like drugs or something, but the screaming monkeys makes it seem a little too literal). I'll have to go with a 3 on this one. Worth listening to, but wouldn't seek it out again.

this guy wants to be Prince but he is no Prince

Soothing music, though slightly ridiculous at times. "I want your sex" - seems like the least imaginative way to be provocative. Faith is a great song though. In all, I was bored by the end of the album.

George Michael has a good voice, but this style of sensual pop is not interesting to met at all, reminds me a bit of Prince in some ways I suppose. I guess I'm only into Careless Whisper due to how meme-y it is now.

Not bad, little weird but I think it was a good listen

Respect GM, but not really my style.

Faith is a great song, however the rest of the album was not my cup of tea. 3.5

Classic pop album!

This wasn't an unpleasant listen, but I've never been a huge George Michael fan. Obviously "Faith" is a great listen, although I subscribe to the unpopular opinion that the Limp Bizkit cover is better (lol). I also like "Father Figure" The rest of the album was pleasant but not really my style. Also being told over and over that he wants my sex got a bit played out.

Very soft pop, decent vocals but felt a little cheesy

7 out of 9 songs are singles! I know it’s George Michael but still very overkill… The title track/ opener/ massive single is a very good single very upbeat sounding but I’ve never really loved the song fully still nice though. Father figure is a much slower track it keeps the same seal of quality the last song has which is good (I was expecting it to plummet into shit like the culture club album does). I really like that this album of straightforward pop has a nine minute multi parter so I early on! Is what I thought instead its a disguise for two separate not brilliant tracks to be honest I could live without this song. I haven’t got to the album’s closer yet but one more try really sounds like it should end an album it’s so epic and heavenly sounding will be a nice reference point for later. I didn’t mind hard day it’s very funky and very bass heavy and there’s a chilling synth that sometimes gets added in the mix that gives the song a lot of flavour. Hand to mouth instrumentally is rather boring (instead of the bridge) but lyrically it’s got good lyrics. Look at your hands is groovy and probably one of my favourites so it’s a shame this wasn’t a single. I don’t really like monkey too much it’s too electronic for my personal tastes but it’s a song where I completely get the appeal. Kissing a fool immediately made me think of the song Horsin’ around by prefab sprouts for sone reason but it’s a good song I kinda feel that one more try feels more climactic as a closer and I may have had this as the penultimate track but it’s still great.

Classic 80s sound. Good mix in styles of songs. Generally enjoyable listen but wouldn’t listen through again.

while it is decent music, it gets dull and boring especially on the lyrical side after a few listens

It's good, but I'm also, like, weirded out? But like, in a good way? So... that's good?

In 1998, George Michael came out of the closet after propositioning an undercover cop in a Beverly Hills public lavatory. His army of fans across the world were deeply shocked: they had no idea that, after all these years, George Michael was still in the closet. That indicates a bizarre fact about George Michael: his perception of his music seemed radically out of sync with the perceptions of both his fans and detractors. Throughout his time in Wham!, he oft claimed a political dimension to his and Andrew Ridgeley's songs, a political dimension that nobody in the world cared about whatsoever, liking Wham! as a fun pop duo making polystyrene pop hits for teenyboppers. All this is fine: it's for the best that you don't consider your political outlook in light of Wham Rap!. Anyway, George chafed at his inbalanced partnership with Andrew, leading to instances like Careless Whisper being a semi-detached release, credited to Wham! featuring George Michael. The inescapable split came in 1986, and Faith was the first album of George Michael's solo career. And then the George Michael paradox resurfaced: the newly liberated George Michael saw himself as a versatile, visionary 80s artist in the mould of Prince and Michael Jackson, whereas the rest of the world saw him as the bloke what was in Wham!, doing songs that they fully expected from the bloke what was in Wham!. Now remember, that's what his fans wanted, and it's not meant to be a slur. That said, it does show that George craved some form of credibility beyond the women in wine bars who had Wham! posters on their walls five years prior. So, in order to be fair to George, should we judge Faith on the level he set for himself? The album is clearly ambitious, starting with the Bo Diddley rhythm of Faith, and taking on soul, jazz, ballads, electrofunk and, with the CD version, dance. Now, eclecticism is not a virtue in and of itself, and the ecleticism of Faith strikes one as calculated. Specifically, it's calculated to sound like Prince. I have to be open with you lot, my brethren: I have no affection for Prince. Now is not the occasion to explain myself, but ask yourself this: in Little Red Corvette, not only does he slutshame the poor woman, he claims she carries round used condoms in her pocket. Who would walk around town with a used condom in their pocket, let alone more than one? Who would include such an incomprehensible detail in a song? But anyway, by default I prefer our George doing Prince than Prince doing Prince, but that is not much of an endorsement. However, it goes some way to explaining the paradox: our George didn't realise his ideas weren't especially original or profound, nor did he realise that nobody listened to him for originality or profundity, but because they found him fun. Take the title track: our George sought to make a rock 'n' roll pastiche and a declaration of independence after the breakup of Wham!. But he undercuts the latter with the opening lines, "Well, I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body/ I know not everybody has got a body like you", causing George's audience to treat it as a cheeky, sexy ditty. Yes, I can see that our George thought he should start the song with a lure for the listener, but he didn't clock that the listener just wanted the lure and not the declaration. Better George's roguish grin than his showy posturing. And our George didn't realise that this album was not a revolutionary artistic statement, but an acceptable bit of upscale 80s pop. This album isn't really for me, but it is for plenty of others. It wasn't aimed for them, but does that matter? Have some perspective, detective.

Like this album - evokes a certain time in my life.

Really pleasant surprise wasn’t expecting much but it is a decent pop album with some funk beats. Downside is all the songs are basically about sex except for faith

Too much George Michael for me

Not bad 👍

i quite enjoyed the mellow sounds and overall vibe to the music which is strange because i usually don’t like these types of sounds however i thought it was calming and intriguing.

Fun 80s pop. George Michael is very passionate lol.

Peaks at the title (first) track for me. A bit lounge musicky

Pop. Un par de megahits. Ni fu ni fa.

Not really my thing. I see why people like him though, but it just didnt sit with me. Maybe another time.

Overrated. It’s not bad but one of the best all time? Not even close. This was a right time, right place success.

Good classic hits, but that was it.

Faith – vilken klassiker hörrni! Father figure – backupkören är ju guld. Mycket trum-maskin asså. Men inte min smak.

There's no doubting that GM has a great voice and the sales figures are impressive but also tired by now, well past its sell-by date and pretty forgettable overall. “Kissing a Fool” is an all-time personal fave (how much more frequently one wishes these pop stars would go classic and/or cover traditional standards as it hihghlights [maybe flatters] their talent). "Hand to Mouth" is good, too, but much of the rest suffers from overpackaging and overexposure (which do go together, don't they?). Bright shining pop music so polished and sheeny that it's no wonder he wore shades. For all the shiny surface, the substance (if there was any) has long since died off.

got half way through it. kinda fun.

I really don't understand the cover photo. Is he hiding from someone? Sad about losing his shirt? Did we catch him right when he started to take his jacket off? I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I never really listened to much solo George Michael except what the radio might have played. Faith is super catchy, as is Father Figure. Really all the songs are solid, I particularly like Kissing a Fool, which is lovely. I don't enjoy the lyrics as much, they strike me as a bit ... frank. But still catchy.

One of the biggest 80s pop stars, especially in the UK, but unfortunately more like a Forgotten Figure. Michael shifts into a more mature sound than his earlier fun Wham work. The production is still top of the notch: distinctively 80s between the synths, drums, and vocal style. They're a fair mix of funky dance tracks and personal adult contemporary. Some songs like "Hard Day" remind me of Prince. The last track had traditional pop jazz club vibes. It's all pretty decent. I enjoyed the synth effects, although it got a little too repetitive to warrant nearly every song going for 4-6 minutes. It also feels a little overcrowded, with hardly a moment to rest. Favorites: Faith, Hand to Mouth, Monkey, Kissing a Fool

Good on you George for forging your own path. This album is not for me, Look at Your Hands was the one track that caught my attention.

Buen álbum

It was okay

Meh. Not so good 80s music. Not really my taste

Quintessential 80s. His vocals are amazing. The production is excellent. It has several hits.

Faith is great, but Father Figure is the real highlight here, such an awe-inspiring love song. The rest is a bit hit-and-miss.

Knew a few of these songs, good album overall, but nothing I'd listen to over and over

That's a healthy 3 o'clock shadow.

George Michael's Faith sounds like a good Michael Jackson album. It has a lot of swing, a strong vocal performance and a great mixture of funk and disco, but some of the timbres feel dated and somewhat annoying, and the slow paced tracks do not always deliver for me.

You know, this album was amazing in the context of the time. I watched a Behind the Music special about it, in fact. The two music videos that went into high rotation were pretty groundbreaking at the time. But I can't say that any of the music stuck with me.

I feel so conflicted but . . . Father Figure is a bop . . . .

Quite fun and enjoyable, but as we listen to more of these I think that 4 stars is gonna be reserved for songs that get a song on to my playlist. But I certainly wouldn't be sad to hear some of these songs again.

I don't think it was as good as the last album of George Michael's I got but it was still good if only for his voice in some songs. Faith is one of my fav songs of his

State of the art pop from the late ‘80s, with a plethora of sugar-high hooks and packaged like a consumer product. It’s hard to argue with the number of hits and sales, but I find the oversinging (close to outright hollering at times, and way too breathless and syllable-adding at others at other) bothersome. But the tinny, canned beats (“Monkey” and “Look at Your Hands”) just don’t hold up very well and like a lot of high-end pop music, it’s overproduced and plays to the lowest common denominator of popular taste (which makes for forgettable and short lifespan). On the plus side, his voice is so good on “Kissing a Fool” (just a beautiful song – best thing he ever did in my view and makes me wish for more of such); “Hand to Mouth” is a cool tune, too, more compelling than all of the hits. Still the emphasis of sales over musical quality makes me downgrade the 3.6 to a 3.

This album starts off strong but quickly dips into a slog. "I Need Your Sex" overstays its welcome by a lot (and get's a reprise?). Not sure what he was thinking there. "One More Try" is a snooze. "Hard Day" is an okay Michael Jackson song. Still, there is some fantastic music on this album. The production is great. Favorite Tracks: Hand to Mouth, Faith, Father Figure

Kudos to this LP for wearing its aggressively horny heart on its sleeve. Michael manages to get away with this in no small part to how endearing and catchy these songs are - some stray into standard cheesy ballad territory, but most keep things lively and interesting beyond what one would expect.

Looking down from a elegiac height, plenty of good beats but lyrically didn’t work for me.

Buen disco

I was looking forward to this. It’s ok. Kinda repetitive stylistically speaking.

I liked it!

Some of the best singles of the 80s herein. As a full album, however, it just misses the mark for permanent inclusion in my rotation.

Seems like an average pop album from the 80s. Faith is a fun song. Some of the others have a good rhythm too. It kinda decreases with excitement as it goes along. Overall pretty standard. 5.8/10

Blandito. Un poco aburrido.

My brother is a big George Michael fan, and I don't mind the odd song. Of course I know Faith and there were a few other nice surprises in there. Considering I don't like 80s pop, pretty much in all cases, this was nice. It was bordering on a 4 if I'm honest.

I prefer Listen without Prejudice. Father Figure is a great song.

Hadn't listened to George Michael before (aside from his huge hits), this albums helps explain some Arrested Development jokes. I feel like I got a good feel for the guy, seems like he likes sex. Next I need to listen to a Michael Bolton album to understand Office Space

Never heard the whole album before, which is the point of doing this! Singles were clearly the catchiest songs, some of the filler was fairly silly. He was a great singer, but I would have liked to hear him sing more rock than pop

I don't -love- the production, but it's still a very charming album. The last track is pretty great, I even like it more than the title track!

Not for me. Has good song though.

In terms of songs I'll go out of my way to listen to again, that's probably only the title track. But I found the American standard-style of Kissing a Fool intriguing- I'm not aware of too much of that from pop stars in the 80s.

i really don't know if i can sit through this lol it's perfectly fine pop music it's just corny for me! good production etc though and catchy

Jebeno.

It was alright, and I was surprised how many songs I knew from it. 5 recognized songs

I thought this album to be better than it was after listening. From my youth I remembered some of the hits, but not the weak tracks. "Faith" is a great song in every way. "I Want Your Sex" is also quite good. "Kissing a Fool" and "Father Figure" are ok. The other songs are forgettable.

Decent pop record; the monogamy is sexy felt forced, like just be horny and chill!! There's nothing wrong with being a horn dog! Funky production, especially on I Want Your Sex pt. 1 & 2

I knew many of the songs on this album, just from listening to the radio in the '80s. Not really my thing, but it is all very well done.

2nd time around with this album. Still enjoyable Admittedly nothing on it comes close to the first three songs but the whole album is listenable ... just not my style otherwise would score higher 3 stars

Average

Never listened to any of this album that wasn’t on the radio. The songs seem pretty simple now but they are still good. Strong voice doesn’t need too much help.

I guess it would be nice...

6,5/10 Legal

Not too badly aged; some of the tunes, especially the first tracks, are still very catchy. Still, George Michael (RIP way too early!) is better in a "best of" compilation than an individual album; it's not like there's a unifying thread across the tracks here.

Faith the song is exactly 3:16 long. My first thought on listening to this is that, goddam, Faith is a catchy motherfucker. Has anyone mashed this up with Prince's Kiss? Anyway, the other thing I think about is how GM had to hide who he was through all this. At least, when this album came out, he wasn't out. Which seems pretty ridiculous looking back on it. But that must've been fucking horrible. But as far as 80s pop albums go, there are some heavy hitters on here. There are also some very slight, forgettable tunes.

Our 5th grade teacher used to let us play cassettes in class every now and then, and you bet your sweet ass this was on repeat. The boys supplied Poison, Def Lepard, Motley Crue and probably Bon Jovi; the girls brought the Dirty Dancing soundtrack and George Michael. What a crazy time to be alive! Anywho, listening to this now it strikes me as a tale of two halves. Those first four songs are pretty tight (I genuinely like “One More Try”), but it’s a drop off after that. “Monkey” feels like a blatant rip off of “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and, as mentioned, it’s hard to imagine this album at all if Prince never existed. Still, it’s all really listenable and I get why the hits were big as shit. Sad that he left the earth when he did. There ain’t no joy for an uptown boy, after all.

Too much sex for me. But sure, this is a good record. The single is better in George's hands than it was in the hands of those shitheads in Limp Bizkit. Actually, it's a great song. I always laughed at it but its so catchy.

George Michael had a great voice. These songs are the epitome of pop music. Just pure ear candy and accessible melody. It's an album that screams Prom (Aside for "I Want Your Sex," although in all honesty, that's fair game too).

Another rollercoaster album! Faith and Father Figure are really good. I thoroughly enjoyed One More Try as well. Most of the other songs not so much. This is a solid 80s album. Not my particular cup of tea, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I like about half the tracks.

Surprisingly good for what it is. I remember playing this a lot at the record store and enjoying it despite it's blatant commerciality.

Not as good as Older but OK

Not really my thing, but I have to hand it to George Michael - looking at Prince and Michael Jackson in the late 80s and thinking to yourself "I can hit that level" and then _actually doing it_! Amazing! 😲 Fave track - "Hand to Mouth", I reckon...

I'm not a huge fan of the 80's genre George is in but there's a few classics on here I still appreciate

Ok, easy listening... I give it a 3

A solid 3. The title song is a solid classic but I'm not a massive 90s/2000s smooth croonin' pop fan

Some bangers, mostly not

I was expecting more bangers in this so slighty disappointing in that regard. Still a great album with solid 80’s vibes.

Enjoying the album. Admittedly nothing on it comes close to the first three songs but the whole album is quite listenable 3 stars

Not completely awful but wasn’t really my style

Kinda got worse as it went. Only getting a 3 Because of "Faith - Remastered"

I really like the musical direction that George Michael decided to take with this album and it suits his terrific voice - one of the great rock pop vocalists. The opening tracks (Faith, Father Figure) are classics. However, the album starts to lose its way for me and the ballads are pretty dreary.

Father Figure

Thirsty af

Allegations not withstanding this was good music, perhaps made ominous by the later accusations.

It starts pretty strong but kinda fades out.

I LIKE HIM :)

Nope sorry. Zero vibes. Some nice hooks though I'll give it that

Listened to this with Genius trivia on, it really added a lot of context around some of the tracks that made this more enjoyable for me given George Michael's history since the album was released.

Perfectly fine.

Bonkers

A strong 3. Don't know if I'd listen again but was fun, similar to Wham. Not sure how I feel about some of the lyrics, but they gave me a laugh

Inoffensive background music

Een all time favorite van de mama. Funky popalbum.

George really found his voice in this one, in more ways than one. What a set of pipes he has on him here. Doesn't now though, sadly....he's dead.

Lang geleden, leuk plaatje zeg!

Zoe doesn't understand why this would necessarily have to be something people must listen to before they die. I was only her age when it came out, and many of these tracks transport me right back to middle school. I actually relistened to this album recently and still enjoy it, though it is not really my jam. And I am curious about the historical relevance and influence of this album.

some obvious bangers and a few goodies i've not heard before. Some shite too mind. Solid 3.

It was pretty good -- the music was very catchy and he has a great voice, but there was just something really weird about the lyrics to me.

First half of this album is gold. Second half is meh.

Didn't need christian bad boy george michael in my life, still don't. Musically it works, and at some points ya it's groovin and fun, but these lyrics are nonsense and trying so hard to be a "good" bad boy. Listening to this reminds me of the book about christian sex

Great opener

What if Michael Jackson was a white guy from north London? Well, he'd probably sound very similar, and he'd probably be very popular with white British people. I liked this a lot! Sexy, poppy, fun. Still, feels very derivative and I can't shake that.

Never listened to it before. Absolutely cracking 3 song start! V good

it was ok liked the production design

Singles are great, rest of the album is fine. 5-6/10

Smooth, sexy.

It was all right, not my main cup of tea, but many familiar songs

Better than expected. Second half was decent

Very basic pop for first half. Probably dope in it's time but not my thing. Second half was great with more jazz and jazzy balads

Quality album, just not a fan of his style per say.

Faith and One More Try were really good, but the rest of the songs kind of melded together. I couldn't listen to 10 minutes of "I Want Your Sex"

Ikoniskt 80-tal.

Boring

Faith & One More Try were good

Not a bad pop album but absolutely nothing special. First two songs are good, after that the album becomes to monotonous to impress

5 stars for faith and father figure. the rest is blah 3.5

Being sex positive? Cool. Doing it like an after school PSA? Not so much

loved “KISSING A FOOL”!!

It was an ok album. Really only a couple songs that grab you

Op zijn mooist 'een mannelijke Nora Jones' maar op zijn slechts 'liftmuziek met een kreunende oversexte dude' Mix van 'mwah' (kissing a fool) tot verschrikkelijk (I want your sex)....

I enjoyed Faith. Its a bit slow for my liking. Not really an album for me. I think its two stars for me. I like monkey

This is not the type of 80s pop I like; I found it pretty boring.

Production is THIN AS HELL. Obviously a couple of noteworthy hit tracks, but an ultimately ho-hum experience in its totality due to everything lacking any punch production-wise.

Feels like a discount Michael Jackson

Faith: crisp rhythm beats, something spacious and sparse about the arrangement until the guitars really come in ... it's such a clean sound. Father Figure: strains against the space that floats above the mix, cat like whisper -- vocals feel in the middle of the mix, piercing through. Sounds like a Prince song. I Want our Sex: oh the 80's cheese has ARRIVED! Do your best Prince Rogers Nelson. a lot of MJ impersonating Hand to Mouth is an oddly lush yet angular synth track that prefigures Sade in some way, some spanish guitar trilling -- compelling look at your hands: this seems like a bryan ferry track that was wrung out of all its requisite loucheness. it makes me sad. final track is boring but neat. close the bar!!!

Fun but kind of drowns in its own 80's pop sheen. After listening it feels like you've had a slice of cake that's way too rich.

Not really my style but the song "Faith" is a classic.

Not my kind of music, flat out. I heard the songs about sex and I didn't want to listen to this album anymore. Also long, I hate when albums are long when I don't like them at all.

He’s got some talent, but he really tries his hand at everything here. A little prince, Michael Jackson, and even Duran Duran. The overly sexual breathy moaning and singing is off putting. Faith is a banger though.

Sólo me gustaron Faith y One More Try.

Faith is a banger, the rest of the album is kind of meh.

Yeah this album ain't good. Like 2 cool songs here and the rest is a snoozefest. Nothing bad though

A destacar: Track 1 - Faith Track 2 - Father Figure Track 4 - One More Try Track 9 - Kissing a Fool Track 10 - A Last Request (I Want Your Sex, Pt. 3)

Do you think this guy wants to have sex? #hornball

Glossy pop rock and blue-eyed soul built from polished drum machines, clean guitar lines, soft synth textures, and smooth vocals drifts by like expensive hotel lobby music pumped through neon speakers—slick and professionally assembled, but emotionally empty and too sanitized to leave much of a lasting impression. The album’s obsession with radio-friendly polish drains tension and spontaneity from the songs. Despite the strong vocal control, the material often feels lightweight and nutritionally thin rather than genuinely nourishing.

Icky lyrics, icky 80's synths and beats, yuck.

Not really for me, despite the ‘80’s nostalgia.

Not the best album of George Michael

Not sure it was my taste. Exactly what I thought it would be and that is 80s vibe. Didn't really have hits but wasn't too bad

Freaky little guy. I don’t think there’s a time or place where i would play a song from this album. It’s not bad quality wise though

The production is actually quite good considering we're deep in the 80s here. The bits that aged the least well are some pseudo-Carribbean-sounding guitar twangs. Turns out I know more songs from this than I'd ever expected. But there's some really schmalzy bar-jazz here, too. Which on the one hand shows he isn't just the pop guy, and was probably the first 80s/later pop star to venture into jazz/swing... but we're still talking schmaltzy bar-jazz. George Michael is one of the musicians who fascinate me because they have such a fascinating story (even before his untimely death). There's a "but" this this statement, of course - which is that while I appreciate he was a great songwriter, I don't much enjoy the songs he wrote. A bit like ABBA. Incredible songwriters and producers, and rightfully in the pantheon of pop, and you get while they are/were so ubiquitous on the radio, MTV and wherever. But I'm grand not listening to George Michael or ABBA for years. There's never a point where I'd say "you know what, I really feel like putting on some George Michael or ABBA!"

Every song is either about religion (expected) and/or sex (not expected).

Very nope.

I did not have Faith this would be a good album despite loving Father Figure. Thought the corny horny aspect would be in more songs. Functions best when it’s upbeat.

Needed to crank the horny 11

Pretty funny to get this album on Easter Sunday. The opening three tracks are hilarious given the context: Faith, then Father Figure, then I Want Your Sex - Pts. 1 & 2. (It's what Jesus would've wanted.) All-in-all, too "airy" for my taste, and the lyrical themes are creepy, disgusting even. The sound definitely has a place in musical history – George Michael was huge back in the day – but that doesn't excuse the number of times it made me (and, clearly, other listeners) shudder. I guess the symbols on the bottom-left of the album artwork are a halfhearted attempt to win back the Christians (and Jews, and musicians, and lovebirds, and money-hogs). Judging by its peak at #1 on the US charts, this strategy seems to have worked. Surprised I've never heard Faith, but it lives up to its level of popularity. Extremely catchy, with a tempo and mood that make it feel like the 80s equivalent of S&G's Cecilia. Father Figure is another track I really feel I should've heard by this point. Smooth, whispery-vocalled, somewhat understated, and one of the most violently of-its-time recordings I've ever heard. If this had come out in the 90s or 70s I would've my hat (and my backup hat hidden under the first). However, it's around the beginning of the next track where I really start to feel the minutes and seconds passing. 51 minutes of something so unabashedly, well, "eighties" is bound to drive off lovers of struggling genres like jazz, rock, blues, and punk. It so happens that, from track 4 onward, the tracks aren't very good. One More Try might work better if it were the album opener, but as it stands, it's pretty boring. One of the rare examples where strings don't really add anything (see also: most of the disco genre). No interesting chords or instrument-playing. Hard Day definitely improves from there, mainly boasting a cool bassline and some chords that do something, anything, more interesting than I/IV/V/vi. But Look at Your Hands, Hand to Mouth, A Last Request (I Want Your Sex)... these are all just, well, underwhelming. Bad, even. And I Want Your Sex wasn't quite convincing enough the first two times to justify a third part on the same record. 2/5 Key tracks: Faith, Father Figure, Kissing A Fool

Opening track is a banger. First side is decent. Trails off a bit for me. High 2s.

This album is lame, I’ll say it. George Michael had a good voice. But, the songs are just so cheesy and saccharine. I feel like I’m being serenaded by someone who has just been introduced to the concept of romantic attraction. This ends up being an album devoid of any emotion, the same overproduced sounds, and nothing to latch on to. I can’t agree with the comparison to Duran Duran, because at least they were fun. There’s nothing fun about this album, outside of of the first track. 3/10.

Polished, to a fault. Maybe the 'best' backing band and production that money could buy - and someone told them to play/make banal radio-friendly filler. Supposedly Mr Michael had a good voice - did no-one suggest he should not just whisper it away, or he didn't take their advice? The vocal production is infatuated with his voice - beyond all reason. Maybe he did something right - he secured good chart positions. But, it all sounds fairly tedious to me. ('Monkey' is a little bit funky, but the lyrics are uninteresting, for a whole 5 minutes yawn.) If I was listening to this with someone else - I'd be twitchy, looking round for what's next. This album is Pretty Poor, 3/10.

Dated and boring me to tears. Don't got much else to say.

iconic but too much white man energy sorry i said what i said

Starts with an all-timer and then politely asks you to keep listening while it becomes increasingly fine. Respect the era, respect the craft, but I'm good.

There's a piano, a drum machine, and George Michael. No thanks.

Nimikkobiisihän on melko kova hitti.

Mulla on sielussa joku musta piste George Michaelin kohdalla. Faith on hemmetin hyvä biisi.
