I was expecting more bangers in this so slighty disappointing in that regard. Still a great album with solid 80’s vibes.

I really like the musical direction that George Michael decided to take with this album and it suits his terrific voice - one of the great rock pop vocalists. The opening tracks (Faith, Father Figure) are classics. However, the album starts to lose its way for me and the ballads are pretty dreary.

Listened to this with Genius trivia on, it really added a lot of context around some of the tracks that made this more enjoyable for me given George Michael's history since the album was released.

George really found his voice in this one, in more ways than one. What a set of pipes he has on him here. Doesn't now though, sadly....he's dead.

Zoe doesn't understand why this would necessarily have to be something people must listen to before they die. I was only her age when it came out, and many of these tracks transport me right back to middle school. I actually relistened to this album recently and still enjoy it, though it is not really my jam. And I am curious about the historical relevance and influence of this album.

George Michael con su primer trabajo en solitario. Después de dejar Wham la expectación era máxima. Y finalmente, Faith fue un gran éxito. Referente de la música pop de los años 80 George Michael construyó un disco muy explosivo al principio pero que pierde gas al final. Memorable Faith con esos órganos que de repente dan paso a una serie de Guitarras... ouuu yeah! ¡Estás escuchando Faith jejeje Baaabyyyy!. Father Figure es un trabajo pop impecable con unos coros muy bien conjuntados. Y después de estas dos canciones llegamos al "I want your Sex", algo más de 9 minutos de canción que dieron para hablar, bailar, ligar en una discoteca a finales de los 80. Para finalizar este gran comienzo de disco hay que nombrar "One More Try", una balada lacrimógena al más estilo Prince. A partir de aquí el trabajo es correcto pero nada destaca tanto como para ser reseñado. Quizá Kissing a Fool, otra de esas baladas pero esta vez al piano con un ritmo Jazz pausado y relajado. Si fuera por las 4 primeras canciones estaría cerca del 5 (4,5 quizá) pero el final no tiene ni mucho menos el nivel de las primeras canciones.

What if Michael Jackson was a white guy from north London? Well, he'd probably sound very similar, and he'd probably be very popular with white British people. I liked this a lot! Sexy, poppy, fun. Still, feels very derivative and I can't shake that.

Como decía al hablar de Duran Duran, sí había buen pop en los 80s y esta es una buena muestra de eso. Un disco que se siente... elegante, pero no sobrio, la palabra correcta quizá no se puede traducir y tendría que ser "slick." No hay mucho que decir excepto que destila esa esencia de synthpop de los 80s muy bien hecho; sus sencillos se volvieron en clásicos indelebles y con un solo disco creció exponencialmente a cualquier cosa que hubiera logrado hacer previamente con Wham, se volvió una verdadera superestrella de inmediato. A mi gusto personal no, nunca va a ser mi género, ni es el tipo de pop que me llama y es un sonido que incluso tomando la nostalgia se oye ya, quizá justo por ser tan emblemático de toda la música de masas de la época, un poco anticuado, no es algo que vaya a volver a escuchar constantemente, pero me alegra haberlo hecho al menos esta vez. No fue difícil de escuchar y es apreciable, hasta para quienes no tenemos gusto por el género, la calidad que tiene; impresionante que no solo haya escrito todo sino que también haya sido el productor de todo el disco. No mucho más que decir un disco excelente para lo que es, aunque yo no sea su público objetivo.

Me parece que es un excelente álbum pop, especialmente para la época, en la que George Michael estaba en la cima de su popularidad y podía vender, sin un gramo de pena, las jaladas hipócritas de "I Want Your Sex" (¿partes 1 y 2? chale) y "Father Figure" o el dance de "Monkey" y de todos modos serían hits. Muy rescatables por otro lado "Faith" y "Kissing a Fool". Creo que es la epítome de pop ochentero en muchos sentidos: Un sex symbol que resulta ser gay, cantando acerca de ser figura paterna y de que el sexo es mejor cuando es uno a uno; además es griego pero ni quien lo note porque se comporta como británico y lo aman en USA.

2.4/5 - Headfirst into this album, my first impressions are not stellar. An endless stream of godawful, cloyingly romantic lyrics have never been suitable for any moment of my life. Yet, despite enduring this, my experience only worsens as upon opening Spotify I am met with lingerie covered ass in my "now playing" view, in full bloom and full brightness across the righthand third of my screen. This particular jumpscare had no positive effect on today's study session at the public library. All in all, although Michael's voice may be objectively awesome, this album was definitely not to my tastes, and nor was his singing.

The two pretty decent and even enjoyable, slow vocal songs couldn’t save this album from its frenetic and repetitive 80s sound.

Too horny. It’s just too horny. Rounding up because I maybe never appreciated how weird the instrumentation is on the title track. Not sure I even especially liked it but it did make me go “what the..?”

I am just not a fan of this album. The natural comparison of this pop mega-phenomenon is Michael Jackson, and it's candidly not even close. The title track slaps, but the rest of the jazzy white boy soul just does not appeal. I actually prefer his frequently derided follow-up to this.

Strong start with Faith,Father figure, and I want your sex, but thought it really fell off after that (I want your sex sounds so much like MJ). I realize he was really popular, and these songs are built around him being this massive pop star talent but most of it comes across as a B- for me.

This is not the type of 80s pop I like; I found it pretty boring.

Production is THIN AS HELL. Obviously a couple of noteworthy hit tracks, but an ultimately ho-hum experience in its totality due to everything lacking any punch production-wise.

The title track is a classic. The rest of the album… a bit samey. We get it George, you’re horny and want to be like Michael Jackson but just a little smoother.

Faith: crisp rhythm beats, something spacious and sparse about the arrangement until the guitars really come in ... it's such a clean sound. Father Figure: strains against the space that floats above the mix, cat like whisper -- vocals feel in the middle of the mix, piercing through. Sounds like a Prince song. I Want our Sex: oh the 80's cheese has ARRIVED! Do your best Prince Rogers Nelson. a lot of MJ impersonating Hand to Mouth is an oddly lush yet angular synth track that prefigures Sade in some way, some spanish guitar trilling -- compelling look at your hands: this seems like a bryan ferry track that was wrung out of all its requisite loucheness. it makes me sad. final track is boring but neat. close the bar!!!

Fun but kind of drowns in its own 80's pop sheen. After listening it feels like you've had a slice of cake that's way too rich.

The album’s obsession with radio-friendly polish drains tension and spontaneity from the songs. Despite the strong vocal control, the material often feels lightweight and nutritionally thin rather than genuinely nourishing.

The production is actually quite good considering we're deep in the 80s here. The bits that aged the least well are some pseudo-Carribbean-sounding guitar twangs. Turns out I know more songs from this than I'd ever expected. But there's some really schmalzy bar-jazz here, too. Which on the one hand shows he isn't just the pop guy, and was probably the first 80s/later pop star to venture into jazz/swing... but we're still talking schmaltzy bar-jazz. George Michael is one of the musicians who fascinate me because they have such a fascinating story (even before his untimely death). There's a "but" this this statement, of course - which is that while I appreciate he was a great songwriter, I don't much enjoy the songs he wrote. A bit like ABBA. Incredible songwriters and producers, and rightfully in the pantheon of pop, and you get while they are/were so ubiquitous on the radio, MTV and wherever. But I'm grand not listening to George Michael or ABBA for years. There's never a point where I'd say "you know what, I really feel like putting on some George Michael or ABBA!"

Pretty funny to get this album on Easter Sunday. The opening three tracks are hilarious given the context: Faith, then Father Figure, then I Want Your Sex - Pts. 1 & 2. (It's what Jesus would've wanted.) All-in-all, too "airy" for my taste, and the lyrical themes are creepy, disgusting even. The sound definitely has a place in musical history – George Michael was huge back in the day – but that doesn't excuse the number of times it made me (and, clearly, other listeners) shudder. I guess the symbols on the bottom-left of the album artwork are a halfhearted attempt to win back the Christians (and Jews, and musicians, and lovebirds, and money-hogs). Judging by its peak at #1 on the US charts, this strategy seems to have worked. Surprised I've never heard Faith, but it lives up to its level of popularity. Extremely catchy, with a tempo and mood that make it feel like the 80s equivalent of S&G's Cecilia. Father Figure is another track I really feel I should've heard by this point. Smooth, whispery-vocalled, somewhat understated, and one of the most violently of-its-time recordings I've ever heard. If this had come out in the 90s or 70s I would've my hat (and my backup hat hidden under the first). However, it's around the beginning of the next track where I really start to feel the minutes and seconds passing. 51 minutes of something so unabashedly, well, "eighties" is bound to drive off lovers of struggling genres like jazz, rock, blues, and punk. It so happens that, from track 4 onward, the tracks aren't very good. One More Try might work better if it were the album opener, but as it stands, it's pretty boring. One of the rare examples where strings don't really add anything (see also: most of the disco genre). No interesting chords or instrument-playing. Hard Day definitely improves from there, mainly boasting a cool bassline and some chords that do something, anything, more interesting than I/IV/V/vi. But Look at Your Hands, Hand to Mouth, A Last Request (I Want Your Sex)... these are all just, well, underwhelming. Bad, even. And I Want Your Sex wasn't quite convincing enough the first two times to justify a third part on the same record. 2/5 Key tracks: Faith, Father Figure, Kissing A Fool

This album is lame, I’ll say it. George Michael had a good voice. But, the songs are just so cheesy and saccharine. I feel like I’m being serenaded by someone who has just been introduced to the concept of romantic attraction. This ends up being an album devoid of any emotion, the same overproduced sounds, and nothing to latch on to. I can’t agree with the comparison to Duran Duran, because at least they were fun. There’s nothing fun about this album, outside of of the first track. 3/10.

Polished, to a fault. Maybe the 'best' backing band and production that money could buy - and someone told them to play/make banal radio-friendly filler. Supposedly Mr Michael had a good voice - did no-one suggest he should not just whisper it away, or he didn't take their advice? The vocal production is infatuated with his voice - beyond all reason. Maybe he did something right - he secured good chart positions. But, it all sounds fairly tedious to me. ('Monkey' is a little bit funky, but the lyrics are uninteresting, for a whole 5 minutes yawn.) If I was listening to this with someone else - I'd be twitchy, looking round for what's next. This album is Pretty Poor, 3/10.

JOO ihan hyvää poppista. Ongelma on varmaan että näistä sitten ehkä paria biisiä jaksaa kuunnella. Nimikkobiisihän on melko kova hitti. Ei se kuitenkaan pelasta tarpeeks. Vissiin aika hyvin ol tuotantotiimi ja ite tsöötsi hököllä aikalaisten tuulenpuuskien suhteen kun myyntiä keräs ihan helevatasti. Sikäli tässä on ikävä puoli, että sen sijaan, että ois jouduttu painaan luomuna sisään soittimia niin oli jo keksitty, että esim. rummun voi korvata säksättimellä ja sitä konstia sitten käytettiin monessa veisussa. Eikä siinäkään sillai mitään vikaa, mutta tuo se tän tyyliseen mussiikkiin vähän fiilaria kun joku on joutunut painaan hampaat irvessä groovee, että tavotettas haluttu lämmin sävy.

Tätäkin levyä ihan avoimin mielin odotin, ja olin valmis muuttamaan suhtautumistani, muttakun ei. Faith on hemmetin hyvä biisi. Ja siihen se tämän levyn osalta jääkin. Faithia lukuunottamatta tosi köppäisiä kasarisoundeja ja päälle vähän huokailua. Laulaahan George Michael osaa, niin mä en ymmärrä että miksi nää biisit eivät ole semmoisia missä se laulutaito pääsisi oikeuksiinsa. No muutamat nuo hitaammat biisit on jo vähän siihen suuntaan, mutta nekin pilaa tuo lähes sietämätön rumpusoundi, josta ei voi kyllä erehtyä että millä vuosikymmenellä ollaan. Jotenkin myös laulussa on vähän liikaa omaan makuun karaokekaikua. Synan käytössä olisi kanssa ehkä voinut joko säästää, tai sitten edes kokeilla jotain toista soundia sieltä valmiista paletista. Jos Michaelin ura koostuisi pääosin juurikin Faithin ja sitten Freddie Mercuryn muistokonsertissa Queenin kanssa vedetystä Somebody To Lovesta, niin mies olisi luultavasti kaikkien aikojen suosikkiartistejani. Muttakun 99% tuotannosta on tälläkin levyllä täytteenä olevia pökäleitä, niin päällimmäisenä on vaan vitutus. Annetaan Faithille yksi tähti, ja sieltä aina silloin tällöin pilkistävästä upeasta äänestä toinen tähti. Itse levy ei ansaitsisi kyllä yhtään tähteä.

Then comes another global hit and another one, but also this growing sense of manufactured nonsense, like trying to be Prince but with no edge and no cool. After the songs I've had enough and the rest is the worst drivel I've clapped my ears on for ages. Stop it

Not a fan of George Michael. The title track was barely passable - Limp Bizkit's version was better, and that's not a particularly high quality song either. Couldn't stand I Want Your Sex. Too artsy fartsy. Not for me.

Faith is a great song, but a bit misleading in that this is the only song on the album that comes close to that level of pop perfection. Maybe my expectations were too high based on that song alone, but this album was a total slog after that song. It takes itself incredibly seriously, and the music feels heavy and joyless. Just not my thing.

2.5 - not an unpleasant listen by any means. The singles are still great, and overall he gives a much better vocal performance than I expected. But the bulk of the record just doesn’t really connect with me and sounds a little like a pale imitation of great Prince stuff of the era.

Well-polished pop which sees Michael aiming for peak Prince and kind of succeeding. As a pop record, it has aged fairly well compared to some of its peers, thematically, though, it seems a bit old hat - I remember the furore calling a song "I Want Your Sex" caused back in the day, it all seems a bit silly now. Decent effort from a likeable artist with a great voice and more musical vision than he may often be given credit for, but not really my cup of tea to be honest this one.

I like the song “Faith” more right now than I ever have. What an infectious little song! I love the melody, the acoustic guitar-based arrangement, and Michael’s playful vocal. It really is a fantastic pop song, and for me, it kicks off the album perfectly… …but unfortunately, it immediately ventures into territory that is not my favorite. I can see why some might admire the lyrics and song structure of “Father Figure”, but those breathy, whispery, Prince-like vocals are always a big turnoff for me, and the 80’s adult contemporary sound is just too much. However, “I Want Your Sex” almost torpedoes the album completely for me. I understand that for many, this is fun, danceable, etc. For me, it is none of those things. It is cheesy and cringeworthy. And although “Father Figure” made me vaguely think of Prince, I found myself thinking “I Want Your Sex” was a complete ripoff. When I realized it was eight minutes long, it was simply too much for me. I think what a lot of people hear as infectious, I hear as annoying. It was very hard for me to sit through. “A Last Request” also veers a bit too much into that adult contemporary sound, and “Monkey”, though not on the same level as “I Want Your Sex”, is still synthpop that really grates on me. There were other songs and elements I appreciated; although I don’t love the keyboard sounds on “One More Try”, I think his voice sounds really great, and I like that instead of building into this huge, bombastic soundscape, he keeps the arrangement pretty sparse and allows his vocals to provide all the power it needs. “Look at Your Hands” and “Kissing a Fool” were also fine enough, but for me, nothing comes close to the title track. Obviously, I lean towards more organic sounds and styles, so there is a lot of bias for me there, but sonically, it’s the only song in the album that I would ever want to return to on a regular basis. 2/5

Can’t say I’m a big George Michael fan but Wham are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Particularly 12” remixes of their big hits. I also loved Careless Whisper for personal reasons. Today 10th November 2025 Last Christmas came onto the radio for the first time to my ears so that was a bit apt. None of that relates to this album but shows how I am struggling to come up with any positives. But George was a flawed character and talented musician who died tragically much too young. 2/5 10/11/25

I'm not a big George Michael fan, but there's no denying that Faith (the song) is an absolute classic. Sure, it's overplayed to bajaysus, but at its core, it's a fantastic song. Faith (the album), on the other hand is a bit meh. There's nothing particularly terrible, but nothing particularly memorable either. It's an easy listen, but after Faith, everything else is a bit bland.

Today I was surprised to discover just how commercially successful this album was. In the decades since this was released, my estimation of him as a vocalist, songwriter and performer has increased significantly, but never enough to make me consider checking out his albums. This was a nice opportunity for that, but I didn’t find myself a convert. There are some good melodies, some catchy hooks, occasionally some decent gospel style chord changes, but not enough of any of these positives. The production often seems unfitting for the material, the track sequencing seems off and there’s far too many bland tunes. Apparently he looked at Prince and MJ and decided he deserved the success they were having and fair fucks to him for making it happen…I just can’t believe he managed it with this album.

Nothing to get too exited or too annoyed about on this, but i was secretly kind of hoping that this would have been better pop record

First song gives good vibes and promises cool album. However, the album does not deliver on this promise at least to me.

Pop music is boring. Songs are predictable in structure, sounds like whatever else is the fad at that very moment, lyrics are lazy stories about wanting to fuck someone in thinly veiled metaphors. I knew three songs before listening to this album, since they were force fed to the late 80's MTV generation, which by coincidence is also why I stopped watching anything else but the specialized programming I was interested in (I find it incredible they lasted this far in time, but I digress). This seems fine tuned to young girls taste, in a kind of generic producer's business mindset way.

Faith and Father Figure are great opening pop songs. This is then followed by I Want Your Sex which is none minutes of squelchy silly nonsense that killed the albums strong start. And this is immediately followed by a dull ballad. At this point I was struggling to continue. Things picked up with the funky bass of Hard Day and Casio keyboard beats of Hand to Mouth but my attention trailed off a few tracks later around about when George was singing about a monkey of some sort.

Sorry George, I think you were probably a really nice dude but this is just not my vibe. The title track is good though.

B side is surprisingly ok after hearing the first half. 2/10 but mostly because it made me laugh.

I remember this album when it was first released, and I didn't really get the hype then, and I don't now. It's a typical pop album and while "I want your sex" is a good track, many of the other tracks just blend into one another.

There's not a ton of substance to this album but there are a couple tracks on this that are undeniably catchy. 80's Pop music may be by definition one of the genres I tend to like the least, and while I wouldn't say I clicked with this album, I don't know if it's fair to say I disliked it. Never been a fan, still not. Not to say he's not talented I suppose, just not for me. The title track is the only passable one, the rest really wasn't up to much.

My inner pop personal leapt out when I put this on. I spent my teens steadfastly avoiding George Micheal, public toilets and also lorry drivers just for good measure. At the time he was a figure of hatred for me, encapsulating pompous 'me me me' pop. Im sure you are now thinking dear reader 'he hates it, get ready for a 1 star!' Well, yes and no, as i seem to have mellowed somewhat and now wear infra-red glasses, and i finally appreciated this for the masterpiece it actually is. It's well written and performed. I shall give it the highest i can score it in all good faith.

I'm the wrong kind of gay for this, George Michael doesn't exactly have a lot for the sapphics. I'd probably be able to tag along for the ride, but the '80s are also one of my least favorite decades for mainstream pop music, and this is an album that features a lot of the production attributes that usually drive me away from this era. Everything has that sort of cheesy sheen that a lot of '80s pop music seems to. And the songs are kind of campy, but not in a way I really resonate with. The result is that these are catchy, well written songs, and George Michael is a strong presence, but I just don't really like much of what is here. The Title Track sort of grew on me, Hard Day is sorta funky, and I like Hand To Mouth. Although, I really don't see myself returning to any of the songs here. Although I would like to make a special mention of I Want Your Sex (Pts. 1 & 2), which I can't say I love, but it is genuinely fascinating. This is a 9 minute epic about, you guessed it: sex, which features a little break where we get lyrics like "sex is natural, sex is fun, sex is best when it's one on one" which sort of makes me feel like I'm in some bizarre sex education class in high school or something. I understand that this would have seemed a little more daring at the time, but now it is just sort of bizarre and quaint. It baffles me that this is a song on an album that sold 25 *Million* copies. Anyways, as much as I don't really like this album, I can't really feel any negativity towards it. It's just sort of having a good time, and who would I be to stop it. Plus, I'd like to give some bonus points to George Michael for making such an unrepentantly gay and horny album for the mainstream in 1987, I have nothing but respect, even if I can't entirely resonate here.

I guess the singles can be fun in a nostalgic way if you were around when it got released, but the other songs are a drag.

Although that was a bit confusing considering that the previous song he promised to be my father figure. I mean what was going on in the 80s man? Whenever time travel is invented, the first thing I’m doing is going back and taking their synthesizers away. Just awful. He tried to be George Michael Jackson, but he could only achieve George Michael Bluth. The fact that this charted at all is bananas (How much can it cost?), much less that it was #1 for 12 weeks. Oh and I’m glad that he clarified in the final song that he did in fact want to have sex with me, I wasn’t sure. Faith is a banger though.

George Michael was once a candidate to replace Freddie Mercury as Queen's lead singer. If you haven't heard his version of "Somebody to Love" at the Freddie tribute concert in 1992, go right now. It's phenomenal. This isn't. Faith is a catchy tune...and that's about it.

I never listened to the entire album back in the day. It has not really dated at all. I remember it was very edgy then, and now it just sounds like bad pop music. 2.5 stars

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a George Michael solo album all the way through before, and what better place to start than his debut, Faith? There are moments I genuinely enjoyed—especially the opening two tracks. The title track "Faith" is undeniably brilliant, and "Father Figure" also stood out as a highlight. For an album that apparently spawned so many incredibly successful singles, I was surprised at a) how few I'd heard before and b) how ordinary I found most of them (the title track is a notable exception on both counts). Despite the variety of styles it all sounds incredibly 80s production-wise, and that's a bit of a turnoff for me. I'm not sure there are too many great songs hiding between the synth pads and drum machines either; it definitely feels like George is the star here, rather than the music. 2.5

George Michael can sing, but the subtlety is not a strength of his. All these songs sound flat, like in an unfinished way, and another review mentioned that they've all been turned into club bangers. Which I'd agree with: just about any cover or remix is gonna have more verve than this. Compare to Prince, who took a different tack on sex as a subject matter, and had better musicality and more ideas, half a decade earlier. This is pointless until someone else comes along and spices it up.

I remember hearing Faith on the radio and how different it was compared to everything else. There were a couple other hits I didn't know were on this album. All the rest was filler. I wouldn't consider this an album album, especially one that must be heard in its entirety. So....

That wasn't as terrible as I was expecting, but I was expecting something horrendous tbf. Faith has been overdone so ignoring that. First half I didn't hate, I can see why he's popular with people with that particular taste in albums. By the latter half of the album I was lastine a minute or two then skipping. The actual music was boring tbh, beats were way too slow and soft. Nice voice, but not really my genre.
