I love George. Just great songwriting.

George Michael's split from Andrew Ridgeley (the other half of Wham!) would require him to make a definitive statement of his own sound. Wham! was sunny, friendly, maybe even a little juvenile. A George Michael debut had to be more mature. The pure, lovey nature of Wham! has been molted in exchanged for a sexual, sensual man who is perhaps a little too well-groomed for his public image (see: Sexuality and relationships section of his Wikipedia page). This is emphasized by Faith's focal point, which is the 9-minute I Want Your Sex (Parts 1 & 2), the longest track on the album and the most unabashed as well. Speaking more on Faith, side A opens strong with the titular track and his biggest hit off the album. It's a fun little track that bops along and highlights Michael's best qualities. The rest of side A plays out pretty well, with the perhaps over-indulgent I Want Your Sex being the most inspired choice. Side B has back-to-back songs with programmed drums, which distracted me more than I would've liked. Such a bizarre album. I don't think Faith is bad. I think it starts strong and ends strong! But a lot of the middle parts are tedious and makes me not want to listen again. Such is life.

Not a classic

Back when this came out, if a song was "on the radio", I tended to dismiss it. Especially if it came from a member of a super-poppy group like Wham! Listening to this again, however (and with some hindsight due to George's other solo albums), this is better than I originally gave it credit. 4 stars.

I can't believe I find myself analyzing this album so deeply. George Michael really tried to combine the sounds on big pop records of the time by Michael Jackson and Prince. It sounds cheap to my ears. There are monkey noises at the end of "Monkey." The songs themselves are fuckin weird. Is he singing about being naked with his dad?? Maybe I'm a prude -- OK, I am for sure -- but these songs give me the ick like a Tim & Eric sketch.

This is not really my style. Even “Faith” is worse than I remembered because of the bad mastering. It sounds like “Faith” is being played on a small speaker in another room.

this was pretty disappointing. there’s some good instrumentation but the lyrics are unbearably horny and it sounds generally pretty generic. i still have nostalgia for faith but that’s about it

Faith and Father Figure are great tracks, but that is about it. As these were the opening tracks, the rest of the album sounded a bit dull and sterile and very redolent of late 80s production values. not that special in my humble opinion

Faith is an absolute classic of a song. I just wish the rest of the album got the heights that it got to. The rest is okay but there is so much more there that could have been on this album, but having consulted the list, his better album is on the list so happy days.

Faith and Father Figure are decent tracks. I want your sex sounds like it belongs on PBS but instead of being about the virtues of reading it's about sex. Many of the beats have not aged terribly well. A very average 80s pop record. Kissing a fool was a nice way to end the album.

Wowee. Went through quite the rollercoaster of reactions on this. First two songs were utterly insufferable. But as it lent into the disco-anthem section, and the sun was setting over kunanyi on my ride home, I was feeling it. It dips into the self-indulgent and is grating at times, but alot of it is very well produced, vocal performances are buttery, and has just enough diversity in tracks that I didn't tire of it Fav track: Kissing a fool or Look at your hands 3.5/5

A really fun 80s pop romp, with a couple of flat-out classics. I think some of the material here suffers from being stretched out beyond its natural end point, which keeps it from being as tight and punchy as I would have liked. Look At Your Hands/Monkey/Kissing a Fool is a bit of a nightmare run on the record, and will keep me from coming back to the album in full. But for the most part, loved the camp fun of the production and George is mighty charismatic. Three and a half. Fave track: Hand to Mouth

This felt like a good pop record - one that I imagine was a pivotal moment in Michael’s maturing as an artist. The album starts off pretty strong and maintains that for the first half of the record I’d say. He has a sweetness and attitude in his voice that is pretty easy to eat up, and the openness in both sexual and sentimental fare is a win for sure. I felt it lost a bit of momentum in the second half. And honestly at times I felt like it drew a little too heavily on artists that inspired him (namely Prince), but overall very decent. Not sure how often I’ll be returning to this but still I’ll give it a three and a half. Fave track: One More Try

Lots of hits on this album

Beautiful album, great songs, wonderful voice. What a talent George Michael was.

I am quite familiar with George Michael's stuff from his time with Wham! but never delved into his solo stuff much. Of course, I know the hits, like Faith and Father Figure, I just never took the time to go any further into his catalog. This album drips 80's pop, from the synth heavy sound, to the in your face sexuality, even to the cover photo. The large crucifix earring and leather jacket screams 80's sex icon! Even just by listening to this album I feel like I've been banged by George Michael. I may have ear herpes. None of this is to say that this album is terrible, actually quite the opposite! This was a fantastic record!! It has a very Prince/Michael Jackson feel to it, and I think maybe it kind of got out shined by those heavy hitters a bit, but it is still great. Overall, I was happy to delve a little deeper into George Michael's catalog of music today, and will definately add some of his stuff to my more frequent listening playlists. Favourite songs: Faith, Monkey, Look at Your Hands, Hard Day, I Want Your Sex, Hand to Mouth, Father Figure Least favourite songs: One More Try, Kissing a Fool 4/5

Beautiful album!

I still standby the assertion that George Michael is vastly overrated. This album is clearly stealing heavily from MJ and Prince, he even went as far as to say he was looking to make a “black” album. Not sure that would play in 2022, but the 80s were a different time. Some songs have held up well (i.e. Faith, Father Figure, One More Try, Kissing a Fool), but others sound very dated as many 80s tracks do (i.e. I Want Your Sex, Monkey). Impressive that he played many of the instruments himself, but the drum machine usage hasn’t held up.

At first is was nice, but it bored me a little bit after a while.

Holy shit, I've been transported back to the skate deck and I'm 9 years old! I love this. Spent most of the rest of the day listening to 80s classics

This album had a lot of moments within songs I liked, but not whole songs themselves. I think a big reason for that was how horny it was, which got old quick, and the lack of real instruments, instead opting for synthesized versions, save for Kissing A Fool, which was easily my favorite song. It just made the album feel incredibly dated and stretched out. So, when I give an album like this a three, it's purely due to one or two songs doing all the leg work, and not hating the rest of it. So, good job Faith, I guess. Light three.

Commercial pop with catchy tunes and some controversial lyrics. I enjoyed the first half more than the second half. It's that kind of well-made pop album that I usually listening to for 10-15 minutes and then musically it gets too simplistic to me and I get bored of it. This was the case with this album, too.

Yeah, I guess I just love George Michael’s angel voice. Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, and Kissing A Fool are super 80’s bops. What a strong debut.

I remember this album when it was new and I was like 5 or 6 years old. We'd dance and jump off the couch sometimes skipping the record during "Faith" and then be disappointed when "Father Figure" came on because it was slow. It didn't matter as my mom would always turn it off anyway before "I want your sex" came on. We'd then want to hear the "other Michael" who if course was Michael Jackson. So I think it was today that I finally get to hear side B of the record. And yeah the album peaks with "Faith" but "Hard Day'' and "Monkey" are also jams.

Automatically this album loses a star for the god awful cover art, however, I would say I am on the side of plesantly surprised. There's some very crisp production here that kinda makes this hard not to like, despite that, I made it 2.5 tracks before I could no longer stand to listen to this

Highlights: "Monkey," "I Want Your Sex," "Hand to Mouth" In the scope of stuff we're evaluating, five years is a long time for someone to decide 'you know what, this Michael Jackson fellow might be on to something'. It's a successful synthesis of his heroes' successful acts -- even though Jackson and Prince get unfairly conflated all the time, George Michael does manage to really touch on both. We get bombastic funky gospel and breathy electropop while maintaining the timbre and sharp mixing of Freddie Mercury. And when he actually tries, his lyrics can be as earnest and cutting as any of them. It's not really his fault that his songs take fun hooks and wear out their welcome completely over 5-7 minutes, because that's how '80s electropop worked. But. When people talk about how George Michael influenced '90s boy bands, despite having no distinct stylistic contribution of his own to pop, that's like throwing entire genres of Jackson torchbearers like him under the bus. Bobby Brown? The System? New Edition? Zapp and Rodger? Commissioned? Who? But they're probably not wrong, because George Michael was an industry influence, not a musical one. Like Eminem. Like Elvis. He's a prototype of the Disney turn, an attractive fresh-faced star doing a 180 slut spin, with this disingenuous pretense carried on by Madonna that funk gospel is iconoclasm when that's just where gospel had been at for years. None of the things that made him stand out are an actual accomplishment.

I love this album so much, it’s one of my favourites of all time. George’s vocals are beautiful.

It’s alright but most songs on it are forgettable

When George Michael died I basically went into mourning and listened to “Jesus to a Child” a million times for the next year. I love him. This isn’t my favourite work of his, but it’s still very very good pop. The last half of the album is much weaker than the first, but it’s all good. Best tracks: Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, One More Try

First two tracks are all timers. Father Figure is an incredible song. The rest: ah I didn’t dig. 4 stars tho still

I was so relieved to not have to listen to punk, I didn’t realize how good this album would actually be!! It’s so good! Of course I know George Michael from his hits like Faith and I Want Your Sex, but didn’t know just how great his voice was! I could play this album on repeat for hours. Listen again: absolutely! Purchase for my collection: maybe. I wouldn’t buy brand new, but would definitely purchase from the bargain bin if I saw it! Such a great voice this man has! The album is quitte good, it’s starts off great with faith and father figure. I want your sex is not his best work but okay, after that it gets better again. George Michael is basically the low rent Prince, but even the low rent Prince isn't that bad. I wouldn't seek this album out, but I don't hate it.

De zorgvuldig ongeschoren, in leren jasje gestoken en van een oorbel voorziene George Michael is gewoon een beetje een vieze man, met dat gelispel, die pornosaxofoons en euhm, de mededeling dat hij je sex wil. Materiaal voor Yes- en Fancy-lezeressen die grote posters aan de muur van hun slaapkamertjes hingen. Afgezien daarvan kun je niet ontkennen dat het muzikaal wel aardig gemaakt is.

Toen ik een jaar of 8 was maakte ik een dealtje met de buurvrouw. Zij mocht mijn tape-je van Bad lenen. Ik mocht haar tape-je van Faith lenen. Ik vond het toen wel aardig, maar vond een paar nummers wel erg saai. Ik elk geval niet in de buurt van Bad. Snel terug ruilen! Ik geloof dat dat oordeel van toen overeind blijft. Wel aardig. Met een paar erg saaie nummers. Maar bij lange na niet zo saai als de nummers op Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 die ik al eerder voorgeschoteld kreeg. Als volwassene valt daarnaast de over-the-top-'80's sound op, maar vooral ook die ontzettend vieze stem. 3,5 ster.

Een van de ultieme iconische jaren 80 platen. Het heeft vrijwel alles waar we zo'n hekel aan hebben: drumcomputers, gare synths, experimentele basloopjes, lang uitgesponnen "powerballads". Maar ook de waanzinnige stem van Sjors. En die stem draagt elk nummer met verve.

Pleasantly surprised the first time round. Second time less so. Musically it's got some pretty mental sounds - swear I heard some sort of electronic wobbleboard at some points - but not sure the songs are catchy enough. Saying that, if Prince had made I want your s.e.x. we'd all be racing about it. 3.5

An ace single which is unfortunately not matched by the rest of the album. This project has definitely given me a better appreciation of George Michael as a notch above the cliché one-dimensional pop star. That being said, Listen Without Prejudice struck me as a much better rounded album. Here the production is just too rooted in 80s excess, and even while Michael is cute in his subversive hedonism, this subtlety is simply lacking in the ostentatious songwriting. A decent 80s pop album, but he would go on to do something much more special.

Banger

This album is kind of gross. The number of songs about sexual relationships that include references to patriarchal archetypes has really not aged well. It makes the attempt at social commentary towards the end of the album feel a little phoned in. At least the production is decent; lots of really great classic Roland patch sounds, and some super tight horns on the sex song that just completely does away with all lyrical nuance.

I enjoyed this, but it was a bit long in places. 3.49/5

I knew a lot of the songs, but I don’t think that I’ve ever listened to this the whole way through. Pretty good pop music, but I don’t like the slower songs as much. Still worth a spin. B+

As much as I like a lot of music associated with George Michael, I don't really get a big vibe for his Faith album. I know its his first solo album but it would only really be a good easy listening album if he had excluded I Want Your Sex Part 1. Part 2 was a better mix, with less repetitive lyric, but unfortunately we have all 9 minutes of Part 1 and Part 2. I Want Your Sex Part 1 is up there with Kings of Leon Your Sex is On fire... two tracks that bring out people of a certain age who imagine they are suddenly wearing a Harry Potter cloak of instant sex appeal as they throw cringeworthy bump and grind shapes on the dance floor.

Interesting to learn that it's his first album and that he wrote so much of it. It's a bit too... forwards for me. The 80's be wildin' Worth another listen late night instead of 9 AM on a Tuesday. 2.5/5

Some generic 80s pop that's aged worse than a fruit fly. I mean... I don't hate it, but you wouldn't catch me listening to any George Michael in my spare time. Especially not the 9 minute long sex theme song.

Last Christmas (not on this album) puts a damper on my George Michael appreciation. This album is absolutely a great first half.

I expected to give this a 4, but I didn't think it'd be as close to a 5 as it is for me. I don't think I can give it a 5, but it's pretty dang close. Certainly an interesting experience in terms of lyrics. A lot of bops on here. My favourite songs were Hand to Mouth, Kissing a Fool, and Monkey.

Would give an additional .5 if possible. Catchy tunes (not sure with the lyrics, if most are sexual). Stand outs are Faith, I want your sex, and Monkey. There's this funky sound at the Monkey a Capella that caught my attention too hahaha Will probably listen too.

A surprising start which was actually quite good. Then he went all whispery and it got boring.

"Faith" is a fantastic song, but the rest of the album didn't do much for me. "Father Figure" is a bit creepy, "I Want Your Sex" comes of like a bad Prince cover, but without any hint of innuendo or cleverness. "Hard Day" has a good instrumental with nice bass line, but I didn't think it was going to save the album. It rallied a bit in the second half however; "Look at Your Hands" is a good song, "Monkey" was a bit of fun, I guess, and "Kissing a Fool" was a nice bit of schmooze to round it off. Overall it's well produced and I see the appeal for some people, but the rest of the songs in between sound like something you'd hear in a dentist's waiting room.

Is this a culturally redeeming and epic showcase of musicianship? Fuck no. Is it a time capsule and a postcard picture of iconic 80's pop music? Absolutely!!! The guy could write a catchy song with the best of 'em. This stuff was on repeat everywhere at the time.

I’m not a pop music fan, but this is a very good album.

Difficult one to pin down. The songs are a bit weird. A little disturbing at times. But George is a great singer and Kissing A Fool is one of my favourite songs. I’ve liked that one since 87… or whatever year it was that it was a single. Despite the collection of hits though, it is hard to like the collective. It’s kinda forgettable.

The production was a big bang here to me. But as the album went on, it was a little too same. Call it an even 3.

This record may contain some of George Michael's most notable solo songs, but as an entire album it is a bit more uneven of an experience. While it leads off with three of his biggest songs, notably "Faith" and "Father Figure", the rest of the album begins to fade in impact and creativity. This reminds me of the all too common practice of having only two or so singles on a CD, and spreading out the better tracks across future albums as that was the music industry at the time. It worked when CDs were like $10.00, but it does leave a more plodding experience in the rest of the album.

Very good album with some classic songs

Hats off for George successfully completely revamping his image with this album. This album didn't do much for me at the time, but it has aged pretty well. The songs are well written and performed.

Noch ein George Michael-Album? Habt ihr ne Macke? Ich habe dann sogar geschafft, es durchzuhören. I Want Your Sex scheint sich damals™️ bei mir eingebrannt zu haben, ich wusste, auch wenn ich den Song in diesem Jahrtausend höchstwahrscheinlich noch nicht gehört habe, immer noch die rhythmischen Breaks mitzusingen (c-c-c-c-c-c-cum on!). Faith und Look At Your Hands finde ich noch ganz gut, den Rest nicht weiter erwähnenswert. Zu Prince und Jackson fehlt, obwohl er das Niveau nachweislich angepeilt hat, noch eine Stufe. Bei Prince wäre das programmierte Schlagzeug nie einfach so durchgelaufen.

Er... I guess this is the George Michael album to potentially include in a list such as this one given that it contains his most timeless hits "Faith", "I Want Your Sex" or "Monkey". The cheesy eighties sounds of the rest have aged a lot, obviously, but I guess you can find some relative charms to the different styles used throughout this LP, at least, even though it's not my thing. Faith is great. Other than that, I keep thinking that the songs are a bit not great and a bit lazy. Then I keep catching myself grooving halfway through em. Goddamn 80s irresistibly

Like the other George Michael I got, it was fine. Nothing special. I'd never heard any of the songs on here so wasn't sure what to expect. It's fine.

A fun album but weird lyrics… I’m sure I’ll revisit it.

So so good. ONe of my favorites! This, and Freedom 90, underscores how a sugar pop group - Wham! - didn't show the true talent.

Truly awful

I'm not sure what I was expecting, maybe something a little more mind-blowing, as this album has pretty legendary status which I have put off listening for quite awhile. I liked it, but nothing blew me away. Still, a good collection of songs. Maybe a reslisten would make it click a little more for me

Faith is a great pop song, but I always found George Michael creepy. He's creepy when trying to cajole someone into having sex with him (I Want Your Sex) and obviously extra-creepy on Father Figure. Did he have to introduce fat-shaming of children into Look at Your Hands?

Holy moly this caught me completely off guard. Insanely strong pop effort with pristine production and absolutely catchy tunes delivered by a silky smooth vocal. Everything feels so effortless but incredibly polished at the same time. The jazzy feeling on the closer 'Kissing a Fool' did feel a bit out of place and was just too sugary for my taste.

Jesus Christ, 1987 George Michael was one horny man. The production is simply incredibly and crystal clear - both when it comes to the softer pop approaches and the more rock/funk inspired songs such as “Hard Day”. I fully appreciate the songwriting and the mix of grand and breathy vocals.. It just rarely hits me emotionally.

There’s a lot that I like about Mr Michael as a public figure, and the opening track is a great pop song. However, about 4 tracks in I felt it was all a bit Prince-lite. Soul pop is really not my thing, and the songs here did nothing for me. I don’t think I really need a ‘grown-up’ Wham! in my life. Bland and uninspired.

Apologies, I ADORE this album. Actually, no apologies. I didn't actually own a copy until last year. Back in '87 and early '88 and it was everywhere in my world. You couldn't escape it. Not that I wanted to. The songwriting and production is perfect pop for me. Yes, Georgie is trying to grow up. He lays down a marker for this on tracks like Kissing a Fool and Father Figure. But the fun is still there on I Want Your Sex. Ewww. This actually seemed radical at the time. He's a great artist, and this is his peak. Spin on that, MUTHAS.

This is the first time I’ve played a full album by George Michael, I’ve always been aware of his music but mainly just the singles. This is an odd one. Bit of a hodge podge of influences/styles like he’s still finding his feet. Some sound a bit Madonna-y, some a bit Frankie Goes to Hollywood-y, some a bit INXS-y. I love Faith though. Top pop.

It is an extremely popular album, being certified diamond for over 25 million copies sold worldwide, and winning Album of the Year at the 31st Grammy Awards. It has been compared to Michael Jackson's Thriller by George Michael and critics, in terms of subject matter and sales. George Michael was inspired by R&B "black" music to make his overtly sexual pop album, and this resulted with him being the first white person to have an album at number 1 on the Billboard Top Black Albums chart. This was a beautiful pop/R&B/soul/rock album that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I can see (or should I say hear) why it was/is so popular around the world. Everyone should give this album a listen if they haven't already.

I day me and george michael drove around town, making wringvturns, rushing to do returns, in time to get to school carpool. I thought george Michael’s album was pretty amazing, but then sometimes I thought, you know george michael, I want your sex extended version is some weird wild stuff.

Without the sax, "Careless Whisper" boy is no different from other '80s pop-soul acts. Generic, pompous, and ironically not as sexy as they think it is.

A great album. It shows off his voice and skilled songwriting and blows up a few of the digs at Wham. In 1987, just before we got a resurgence in 50s-style songs from guys like Chris Isaak and then the La Bamba soundtrack, George Michael put out a single with a Bo Diddley guitar riff and showed he had way more tricks than the jitterbug.

I have an adverse reaction to George Michael and it's pure prejudice stemming from despising Wham in it's day. Then I put this album on and recall how much of this I know, and the man's voice. See! Being a jerk means you miss out on nice things. (And Wham wasn't that bad in retrospect...but still wasn't great, or even hinted at how successful GM would be).

glorious 80s trash!!!

Faith was massive when I finished school in 1987 - I hated it. More receptive to it now, but still is not really my thing.

It's easy to look back now and dismiss but this was and still is an incredible achievement. There's a few weaker tracks but this album contains some real outstanding music that was very successful. And yes, godammit I enjoyed listening to them!

George Michael was for sure a talented guy. I don't mind this album. I definitely prefer the more soulful tunes and not as much the ones where it sounds like he's trying to channel Prince or Michael Jackson. Not my thing overall but it was good to listen to once. 3 stars.

One of the smoothest silkiest voices ever to grace a mortal. He was gorgeous too. Faith is a stone cold classic, and even the lesser songs with their veering-into-proper-corny are saved by his smooth vocals.

A collection of great pop songs. A couple album fillers, but overall a gem! Favorite line: “Sex is natural, sex is fun, sex is best when it’s one on one.” Good lord.

Listened Before? Y Oh yes!!! This album was iconic in the late 80s! Everyone was all up in arms about "I Want Your Sex", and now we've got WAP. You can't stop music. And you can't ignore the fact that this album is just literally banger after banger top to bottom. One of the greatest pop albums of all time? Certainly one of the best I've ever heard. Honestly maybe not fully for me

I don't hate the sound of this, but I find some of the lyrics to be...annoying? It's alright, but I wouldn't add it to my music library.

This album should be called Kinky and Confused. Musically it had a lot of fun moments, and I did quite like the remastered mix. But that gets overshadowed by a landfill of lyrics and themes that seem starving and malnourished. Starving for what? Like how the narrator here REALLY wants sex like really bad. So much so he puts it as his last request of the album. At least Hand to Mouth was somewhat compelling in its message, only to be followed up by 2 of the worst tracks. Look at Your Hands sounds like a comeback written by a pre-teen. Where Monkey just leaves you scratching your head and asking why. I guess the lesson here is never write an album on an empty stomach.

Although I appreciate his popularity at the time I was never a big fan of his music

Ok I deeply disliked Wham and GM in the 80s and 90s, corporate pop. But listening fairly he's clearly a proper songwriter. Not the only artists whose production in that era has not worn well, and only the ballads are really difficult to stick by. Others, good radio.

This was a surprisingly good album, minus the 15 minutes of constant "I want your sex" repetition. Recognized almost every song, couldn't believe it. Solid pop that is a bit dates but still very good.

We got "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" a while back and I was disappointed by it. I guess that's because all my favorite George Michael songs are on "Faith." Great album.

My girlfriend had this poster hanging on her wall back in 87, along with this album. I married that beautiful woman too! George Michael is an underrated artist with a number of excellent songs. There's some cheese and a couple WTFs, but overall good stuff. One More Try could be the song of me crying to win back my girl after being such a dick. Great song. Other good ones include Faith (check out Limp Bizkit version),Father Figure (but also kinda creepy), I want your sex and kissing a fool. Luke better not be too hard on this album or his mother may not be too happy. Good solid 3

2 Obv I’ve heard the song Faith before but I’m definitely more of a WHAM! guy. I know this album is beloved and I’d always meant to listen to it, so needless to say I was pretty excited to see it pop up today. Faith is still a great (if not a touch dated) song but it doesn’t seem indicative of the album as a whole. Fitting somewhere in between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson, George Michael’s voice is just as immaculate here as in any WHAM! song I’ve heard. lyrically however it leaves a bit to be desired. Here we have another example of 80s/90s pop being all “ooga booga let’s fuck” with all the nuance and subtlety as a shotgun blast to the face. Musically it didn’t start picking up until One More Try. After that it was a lot less boring until the last bit, which just became kinda creepy. All in all not super impressed. I’d rather listen to Queen, MJ or WHAM! Favorites: Faith, One More Try, Hard Day

1 Late review because I definitely wasn't listening to this at the office and... wtf. I've never been much of George Michael fan, but goddamn this album is CREE-PY. I felt uncomfortable for the entire listening of Father Figure, and then if that wasn't bad enough, he decided to double down on the following track subtly titled I Want Your Sex. I probably shouldn't over-analyze something that's intended to be a serviceably danceable slice of '80s pop music, but goddamn this whole song is Michael trying to convince someone to have sex with him who clearly doesn't want to. "I'm not your brother I'm not your father Oh will you ever change your mind I'm a gentle lover with a heart of gold But baby you've been so unkind Come on I want your sex" And this isn't even the only questionable lyric... this about how every verse goes. When I wasn't completely unsettled, I was bored out of my skull listening to substance-devoid lyrics and unoriginal 80's pop beats. It sounds like he's trying to do a Michael Jackson thing on quite a few of these songs, but while equally as creepy, I'd take a Jackson album over this any day. Once you've had a chance to slog through the boring back half of this album, guess how Michael decided to close it out? Yep, that's right, with a reprise of I Want Your Sex. Ultimately, I just don't think this album has aged well at all. Make the argument all you want that I "had to be there" - you all should have realized this album was bad then, and I'm holding everyone alive in 1987 accountable.

There are three maybe four really good songs in this album, but the rest I'd have to chalk up to some pretty weak "blue-eyed soul". The approach to funk and pop is pretty cheap and underdeveloped in my opinion.

what an album opener! "faith" remains a classic, a huge hit, and its acclaim is well deserved today. if this album was full of "faith" on repeat, i wouldn't be upset and it would easily get a 5 rating. but this album contains more than just "faith," and it's disappointing and i'm disappointed it's disappointing. i listened to george michael's follow up album, "listen without prejudice, volume 1," before this album since it appeared for me first. i can't unknow what i already know and it's hard not to compare. that album has a lot of heart and strength. this album lacks the volume and emotion. after starting out so strong with "faith," there's only one other song that appealed to me. the rest wasn't noteworthy or thought provoking. i didn't even find the pop sound fun, like i do with wham!. very unfortunate.

This album feels like something that was made by a gay man for gay men. I see some similarities between songs on this album and modern day "bops" loved by gay guys. Also, I definitely see where George Michael drew on Prince as an influence for this album, as it's full of sultry, sexy, and even funky beats and lyrics. Speaking of "bops", I thought a lot of the songs on this album fit that bill -- Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, Monkey, but most of the other songs, while baseline good, were kind of forgettable. Even the good songs don't quite live up to "Faith". In case you forgot, George Michael definitely wants your sex, and he makes it known again on the final track "A Last Request", which is kind of a boring finisher, but it is what it is. While not a perfect debut album, it has its merits and is enjoyable and just kind of sexy.

10/10 I love the way George Michael makes everything sound so fun and engaging a very talented soul :)

Slow dive and MBV are better

I wanted to like this one more than I did. The song “Faith” is a great song and I’ve always loved the bass lines on it. I do enjoy George Michael’s vocals but I think the music behind it doesn’t always rise to the occasion. Not a fan of the production. Drums and horns can sound fake. Kissed a Fool is supposed to be jazzy but feels kind of like it’s sung over a generic backing rhythm a 90’s Casio. So much of it sounds too sterile to be sexy. I feel like the songwriting was not good enough throughout to make this a good album. I feel like there could have been a much better version of this album. Tough one to rate but I am gonna say 2.3

I was already going to give this a 1 because I hated it so much, but the last song really put it over the top. Both “I want your sex” songs were so creepy.

I read a comment that said “If you don’t like this album you are homophobic”. People are so funny. I love this. I love his voice. I love the background vocals. I love the snare. I love the reverb on everything. It’s sexy as hell. I would have liked a different ending on I want your sex. Loved bis performance on Kissing a Fool.

I've always liked George Michael's voice, even back in Wham (although I did not care for Wham). The songs here are not as much of a range as "Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1," but you can tell he was trying different things. And I don't blame him for that. Did not realize that "I Want Your Sex" had 2 parts to it. Shows you what I know. So this is definitely where you see the progression to "Listen..." and it's really quite good. Enjoyed it a lot.

So I read the background on this album and I guess he was trying to do something as big or great as Michael Jackson or Prince. His hits definitely reach that level - Faith has great musical elements (love the rockabilly), Father Figure is deep and beautiful (lyrics and instrumentation), One More Try is even deeper and more beautiful (maybe my favorite of all the songs he ever created). But other songs just sound like terrible 80's cheese (e.g., Hard Day, Look at Your Hands). Even Monkey and I Want Your Sex, both big hits, are cheesy - I get why the latter was a big hit (needed some frank talk on the subject in the 80s) but the former is a bit of a head scratcher. Still, he brings it back with his softer and more introspective ballads - Hand to Mouth and Kissing a Fool are also really beautiful pieces. In the end I guess he got pretty close to his idols with this album but not quite all the way.

I wasn't a fan of George Michael when he was all over MTV. I Want Your Sex was soooo overplayed in the 80s and the lyrics are cheesy. But I was really surprised by how much I liked Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, so I was looking forward to listening to Faith with more open ears. Well, this is a good album, but didn't hit me like Listen Without Prejudice, which seemed like a much deeper album. Favorite tracks: Faith (great song, and the bass and guitar lines are really good), Hard Day (great groove), and Look at Your Hands (catchy track - Rolling Stones vibe). I liked the instrumentation on Sex pt. 2. Similarly, I like the music for Father Figure but lyrics like "I'll be your daddy" are just creepy to me. Monkey has cool music but really weird lyrics (I know it's about a monkey on your back like drugs or something, but the screaming monkeys makes it seem a little too literal). I'll have to go with a 3 on this one. Worth listening to, but wouldn't seek it out again.

Absolutely amazing

This album is more than your run of the milk 80s pop album. It is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac at times while able to draw on a wide range of influences such as gospel, club, and blues music. George Michael’s sex positive message is also interesting given the AIDS crisis at the time. Overall a very enjoyable and interesting album.

George Michael really just can’t do anything wrong in my eyes. I guess I’m just biased.

Soothing music, though slightly ridiculous at times. "I want your sex" - seems like the least imaginative way to be provocative. Faith is a great song though. In all, I was bored by the end of the album.

This album deserves to be up there with the big iconic albums of the 80s. You can definitely hear the echoes of Michael Jackson and Prince, but there's so much more going on here than mere emulation. A brave, bold synthesis of styles. Above all, it is genuinely fun to listen to. You can tell he had a great time making it and that joy is contagious.

George Michael has a good voice, but this style of sensual pop is not interesting to met at all, reminds me a bit of Prince in some ways I suppose. I guess I'm only into Careless Whisper due to how meme-y it is now.

The 80s generated the most consistently good pop music, and I will fight anybody that tries to tell me otherwise. With that in mind, I was very happy to get this as my album for the day today! Songs I already knew: Faith Favourite after listening: Faith, I Want Your Sex Pts. 1 & 2 Overall: 7/10 There are some fantastic songs on this album, but as we get to the middle point and towards the end, the songs do tend to get a little less interesting. The album does feel quite front-loaded, with all the best songs being the first ones you hear with the only exception being Kissing A Fool which is a breath of fresh air with its smooth jazz piano. With all of this in mind, it was still a very enjoyable album. It’s frankly a crime that the synths popular in the 80s are rarely used any more. Would recommend to anybody who enjoys camp 80s pop - although I’d be surprised if anybody with that taste hasn’t already heard it!

Faith by George Michael is just short of a greatest hits record for him. I remember when this album was released the fury that it created. It's still such a powerful listen for the big hits + One More Try alone. 4/5.

I was torn between giving this one 1 or 2 stars. It seems like a mix of the very worst of the backlogs of Michael Jackson and Elton John with a few snippets of half-assed jazz and funk thrown in. Definitely not the worst, but still very bad.

No bueno for me

Classic pop album!

Really cheesy and not in a good way. I didn't dislike it, just not my thing.

This album reminded me of watching pop up video in the mornings before school, but it was my first time spending significant time listening to George Michael. I found some of the lyrics clever but most just had me rolling my eyes. Faith is probably the only song I would seek out to revisit, but of course being a 2002 graduate, I prefer the Limp Bizkit cover.

This wasn't an unpleasant listen, but I've never been a huge George Michael fan. Obviously "Faith" is a great listen, although I subscribe to the unpopular opinion that the Limp Bizkit cover is better (lol). I also like "Father Figure" The rest of the album was pleasant but not really my style. Also being told over and over that he wants my sex got a bit played out.

Very soft pop, decent vocals but felt a little cheesy

7 out of 9 songs are singles! I know it’s George Michael but still very overkill… The title track/ opener/ massive single is a very good single very upbeat sounding but I’ve never really loved the song fully still nice though. Father figure is a much slower track it keeps the same seal of quality the last song has which is good (I was expecting it to plummet into shit like the culture club album does). I really like that this album of straightforward pop has a nine minute multi parter so I early on! Is what I thought instead its a disguise for two separate not brilliant tracks to be honest I could live without this song. I haven’t got to the album’s closer yet but one more try really sounds like it should end an album it’s so epic and heavenly sounding will be a nice reference point for later. I didn’t mind hard day it’s very funky and very bass heavy and there’s a chilling synth that sometimes gets added in the mix that gives the song a lot of flavour. Hand to mouth instrumentally is rather boring (instead of the bridge) but lyrically it’s got good lyrics. Look at your hands is groovy and probably one of my favourites so it’s a shame this wasn’t a single. I don’t really like monkey too much it’s too electronic for my personal tastes but it’s a song where I completely get the appeal. Kissing a fool immediately made me think of the song Horsin’ around by prefab sprouts for sone reason but it’s a good song I kinda feel that one more try feels more climactic as a closer and I may have had this as the penultimate track but it’s still great.

In 1998, George Michael came out of the closet after propositioning an undercover cop in a Beverly Hills public lavatory. His army of fans across the world were deeply shocked: they had no idea that, after all these years, George Michael was still in the closet. That indicates a bizarre fact about George Michael: his perception of his music seemed radically out of sync with the perceptions of both his fans and detractors. Throughout his time in Wham!, he oft claimed a political dimension to his and Andrew Ridgeley's songs, a political dimension that nobody in the world cared about whatsoever, liking Wham! as a fun pop duo making polystyrene pop hits for teenyboppers. All this is fine: it's for the best that you don't consider your political outlook in light of Wham Rap!. Anyway, George chafed at his inbalanced partnership with Andrew, leading to instances like Careless Whisper being a semi-detached release, credited to Wham! featuring George Michael. The inescapable split came in 1986, and Faith was the first album of George Michael's solo career. And then the George Michael paradox resurfaced: the newly liberated George Michael saw himself as a versatile, visionary 80s artist in the mould of Prince and Michael Jackson, whereas the rest of the world saw him as the bloke what was in Wham!, doing songs that they fully expected from the bloke what was in Wham!. Now remember, that's what his fans wanted, and it's not meant to be a slur. That said, it does show that George craved some form of credibility beyond the women in wine bars who had Wham! posters on their walls five years prior. So, in order to be fair to George, should we judge Faith on the level he set for himself? The album is clearly ambitious, starting with the Bo Diddley rhythm of Faith, and taking on soul, jazz, ballads, electrofunk and, with the CD version, dance. Now, eclecticism is not a virtue in and of itself, and the ecleticism of Faith strikes one as calculated. Specifically, it's calculated to sound like Prince. I have to be open with you lot, my brethren: I have no affection for Prince. Now is not the occasion to explain myself, but ask yourself this: in Little Red Corvette, not only does he slutshame the poor woman, he claims she carries round used condoms in her pocket. Who would walk around town with a used condom in their pocket, let alone more than one? Who would include such an incomprehensible detail in a song? But anyway, by default I prefer our George doing Prince than Prince doing Prince, but that is not much of an endorsement. However, it goes some way to explaining the paradox: our George didn't realise his ideas weren't especially original or profound, nor did he realise that nobody listened to him for originality or profundity, but because they found him fun. Take the title track: our George sought to make a rock 'n' roll pastiche and a declaration of independence after the breakup of Wham!. But he undercuts the latter with the opening lines, "Well, I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body/ I know not everybody has got a body like you", causing George's audience to treat it as a cheeky, sexy ditty. Yes, I can see that our George thought he should start the song with a lure for the listener, but he didn't clock that the listener just wanted the lure and not the declaration. Better George's roguish grin than his showy posturing. And our George didn't realise that this album was not a revolutionary artistic statement, but an acceptable bit of upscale 80s pop. This album isn't really for me, but it is for plenty of others. It wasn't aimed for them, but does that matter? Have some perspective, detective.

16/08/2022 George Michael – Faith 2/5 A was quite excited to get something different after 3 60’s albums, and I never listened to George Michael albums before; but it has been kind of a disappointment. A pop album about sex and love (in that order), that is the summary. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing special, one of those commercial pop albums that doesn’t transmit anything more than its surface, and there is nothing I have gained from listening to it. Maybe it’s not for me, maybe I have had enough with 80’s sounds; but I didn’t like it. Faith – 3.5/5 A good pop song, catchy and danceable, but nothing special in my opinion. Father Figure – 2/5 Listenable but felt a bit hollow for a ballad. I Want Your Sex (Pts. 1 & 2) – 0.5/5 Why doing a 3/4-minute normal pop song? Let’s instead do a 9-minute song that sounds the same all the time about sex, why not. One More Try – 3.5/5 One of the songs I actually like in the album. Transmit infinitely better that Father Figure and have a better vocal performance. A negative point is that it is kind of generic. Hard Day – 2.5/5 Good vibes, but again the same theme. Nothing remarkable. Hand to Mouth – 3.5/5 Again, not bad, and I think is my favourite in the album because its rhythm and its originality in its music. But it still sounds like generic 80’s commercial pop. Look at Your Hands – 1.5/5 Not as bad as the 9-minute song, but I don’t like George performance here. And again, my favourite word in this review, generic. Monkey – 1/5 I don’t understand how this could be a single. I can’t handle this song. Kissing a Fool – 2.5/5 Sounds good, but again, generic and kind of hollow for me. At least it has a very good vocal performance. A Last Request (I Want Your Sex) – 1/5 And the album couldn’t finish without repeating its message, SEX with capital letters. I think I have never listened to a hornier album.

Like this album - evokes a certain time in my life.

Really pleasant surprise wasn’t expecting much but it is a decent pop album with some funk beats. Downside is all the songs are basically about sex except for faith

Too much George Michael for me

This album holds up pretty well. It has some great songs on it, all of which still work pretty well today. Some of the music is a bit dated because of the equipment that was used in the recording, but overall it's a charming record. I wouldn't put George Michael as one of the top acts of the 80s the way his album sales would suggest, but he was an excellent song writer. It's kind of crazy that some of his biggest hits were released as singles before this album came out and didn't appear on the album 4/5

Only knew Faith. The rest sounded like a mediocre 80s film soundtrack

i quite enjoyed the mellow sounds and overall vibe to the music which is strange because i usually don’t like these types of sounds however i thought it was calming and intriguing.

I could never connect with this album and still can't. Nothing is *bad* at all...just the combination of GM's overly-breathy vocals (just *sing* already - what a great voice he had when belting it out but i feel like 75% of the time he adapts this annoyingly-faux-intimate affected voice) and it all sounding so very 80s just still makes it just sort of wash over me. It's fine - I'd even say well or superbly-crafted - I just have absolutely zero chills or connection to any of it at all. 5/10 2 stars.

I just thought i would find george michael more exciting. Its all a bit sparse. Not good sparse, dull sparse.

Listened to on 7/31/22 4/5 Favorite song: Faith, Father Figure This is a killer debut album and so entertaining! It was easy to listen to and mainly focused on sex and faith

Such an awesome album with some classic, killer 80s tracks. What's not to love?!

I'll be honest, some amazing production and the Dolby Atmos remastering really elevated this to add a couple stars to an album I didn't think I would enjoy.
