Reviews (page 4 of 12)

Bit too cute, bit too fun. Too long. I realise its importance in music history, so I guess I'll add one star for that.

Great album, just a tad too long

A very fun album. Easy to listen to and the skits don’t ruin the albums flow. Fairly long, but doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Класика, завжди любив цей гурт.

Some great and old school hip hop but so varied. No single song to push it to 5 but close

Cool, groovy, upbeat hip hop record. Really liked the vibe, looseness, chill feeling. Want to get into it again and get deeper into the lyrics. Glad I heard this one!

This album is just full of whimsy, and that's what we need more of right now. I've heard of this group but I haven't heard this album until now. Most of the tracks are really good and I love the weird commentary game show tracks sprinkled throughout. But there were a few that musically I did not like at all, which really was a bummer. Overall it was enjoyable, though.

A classic hip-hop album, similarly to ATCQ, that tbh took me a while to get into. In my younger days it was firmly a bit 'soft' for me (cos I was well 'ard of course!), I was listening at the time to Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang, NWA et al. And even when my tastes started to mellow in the late 90s around J5 and Dilated Peoples, I still didn't really go back to this. At some point I did though, and it's hard to deny it... the production from Prince Paul brings excellent funky vibes and a cool , jazzy feel. I still haven't played it loads as it's only recently been introduced to streaming sites due to licensing issues but I've sporadically come back to it and I'm loving it right now!

Houmous & Chutney supported De La Soul for 35 seconds before the organisers cut the set and swapped the acts around. They never supported another act again! 4.2 14/23 Say No Go

Very few hip hop albums from the 80's and 90's still hold up. Lots of it sounds like a parody of itself at this point. The science and flow of rap just jumped so many rungs in the last 20 years. But not this one. Sure, this is "college" hip hop. Released as a Different World was on TV showing black college students. It felt intelligent and a breath of fresh air. It was fun, silly, and bright. No one gets murdered, there is no fake pretending to deal drugs or pimp. No misogynic lyrics. I will say, I hated the skits back in 1989, and I still hate them. But the rest is amazing.

I could really have done without certain of the interludes but

muy divertido. top te quiero chenoa te quiero sazed

obviously i have nothing but respect for the classic hardcore rap acts: schoolly d, krs-one, NWA et al. those guys all laid the groundwork for so much incredible art that came after them — you don't get all the rage artists around nowadays without the stuff those guys did. but i think i'm just too much of a softie to prefer it over the sunny loverboy backpacker rap like this. this album is really interesting because everything i've read about it post-listening seems to indicate that de la soul themselves kinda hated the response to it? they felt so hemmed-in by the response and the image that got impressed upon them after releasing it that their next record exists almost as a total rejection of that image. "the daisy age is over!" they say. which is such a shame because man, i sure do love the daisy age. at least there were a lot of other rap acts operating in this same space. are digable planets in this thing? they better be in this thing.

This may come as a surprise to some, but there was a period of my life where my musical diet was almost exclusively composed of hip-hop. Mostly West Coast, 90s artists, such as N.W.A. and 2pac, though plenty from the East, too. During that time, I never really listened to De La Soul. A friend linked me their later album, "De La Soul is Dead", and I put it on and only remember it washing over me without leaving a trace. I was a fan of other Native Tongues members, Black Sheep and A Tribe Called Quest, but for whatever reason, De La didn't quite land for me at the time. I think I have some idea of why now — even among that circle, they have a very 'laid back' sound, and their delivery is often austere and straightforward. My ears tend to want for something punchy to latch onto, like a very lush and active beat, or a particularly striking voice or rapping style, or lyrics either transgressive or simply angry enough as to be hard to ignore... and I do find myself having to maintain an active focus to stay engaged here, at times. Actually, listening to the final track, the original version of Plug Tunin', I find it much tighter than anything else on the record, and extremely catchy. It feels a lot more 'classic', like something from five years before this album came out, or perhaps even older... Maybe this is something of an 'unhappy middle' for my tastes. But... it's impossible to deny the smoothness of the flow here, the quality of the production... it's really a very fun album. If a bit long. I think that Posdnuos is my oshi. Favorite tracks: Ghetto Thang, Eye Know, Tread Water, Plug Tunin' (Original 12" Version)

Mag ich, ist funny

All killer, some filler

Love this record. 4.5/5

The daisy age was the best period in rap. They sampled whatever the hell they wanted and it was cool. I mean they even sampled Ian Dury's What A Waste. How did 3 black kids from NYC in the late 80s even come across Ian Dury? There are a gajillion songs and about half of them are silly. Jorful and life affirming - not a bitch, a ho, a nigga in sight. Asses remain unmolested - with nary a cap popped in them. Their opinion on the police is unknown. Three is the magic number, yes it is!

It is magically that an album this funny, exciting, and lyrically dense can exist all in one project, it truly is a work of art. I think on relistens this album will fair a lot better with me but trying to catch every track felt like a bit of struggle and I think the album was just a tiny bit too long. I will be totally coming back to this album a lot in the future but for now these are my thoughts.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would

Unexpected fun truly a surprise

This just made me smile. So many great songs and lyrics. They clearly had a blast making this album together and it bleeds into everything about this. I love when an album isn't afraid to be silly at points, and I just enjoy having a laugh at the interludes. The rhymes are just great, what a classic hip hop record that just ages like fine wine. Only gripe is with '3 is the magic number', purely because I have heard it in every ad under the sun so it makes it hard to enjoy. That's not really the albums fault tbh. But it terms of music, the album is just over an hour, and at no point did I feel it drag or start to become overly repetitive. Fav Track: Buddy

Sampling a French listening exam had me rolling

Great beats, sometimes the lyrics are juvenile

sample city oh my

Absolute classic

Listening session: may 1st, while commuting to internship Listened to before: listened to a few songs many times Thoughts: I’ve always really liked a few De La Soul songs, but I’ve never actually listened to this album in total. I liked this just as I expected, hiphop with groovy instrumentals, and this album is an undeniable classic in the hiphop scene Favourite tracks: (3 is) The Magic Number, Buddy & Me Myself and I

Classic

De La are legend

Solid!

The music is good but the skits are so juvenile haha. I overall liked the beats and samples used as well as their abilities as rappers

This was pretty good!

Solid hip hop album.

3.75. The actual songs are good, the skits and bits, not so much. Did streaming kill skits on hip hop albums or are they still doing them?

A fun and funky album.

Hell yeah used to love this one mang

Bra! Massor med låtar jag har minnen till: (3 is) The Magic Number (inte bara för operatören 3s jobbiga grej), Eye Know, Me Myself and I och Say No Go. Gillar verkligen De La Soul.

One of the unique sound of my university life, a wonderfully creative approach to sampling - zeppelin, steely dan, hall and Oates - and a refreshing alternative to the political and gangster scene. Probably a bit too long overall but it works as a unified piece with its tv/ radio show type intro and outro.

Album 175. 3 Feet High and Rising (https://open.spotify.com/album/34LxHI9x14qXUOS8AWRrYD?si=D8fPzoZfSQmkCDaZvEd4Zw) — De La Soul (1989) Fun, goofy and playful hip-hop album. Just a fucking around kind of album. Not exactly what I like, but it's cool too. Some songs, like Eye Know, are fucking legends. There are so many great samples... By the way quite similar in style to A Tribe Called Quest. 4/5 Liked: — (3 Is) The Magic Number — Ghetto Thang — Eye Know — Buddy — D.A.I.S.Y Age

I liked this. There were songs I already knew (“The Magic Number”, “Eye Know”, and “Me Myself and I”), which still sound great and are the standouts. I’m not sure the rest of the album reaches the heights of the best known tracks, but it is still coherent (if a bit too long). Some are absolute ear worms too, like “Potholes in my Lawn.” This is probably a 3.5* album for me, but I’m a sucker for well-used samples. That, alongside the strength of the well known songs, and the fact that this is a great album to listen to on a warm, Spring day, means I’m rounding up.

I really enjoyed this (minus certain skits). I've said it a few times during this project, but I was previously unaware until I did this project how much I appreciate this era of rap and hiphop. I love the use of sampling that the 80s and early 90s had, and this album is an excellent example of that. So many funk and soul hooks! I already knew the singles that got big in the UK (3 Is The Magic Number, Eye Know and Me Myself and I) but nothing else. I could have done without the creepy whispering about dandruff (Can U Keep A Secret) and the orgy skit, sorry the "orgee" skit, but otherwise I had a great time listening to this and would absolutely listen to it again. 4/5

Joyous!

Goes on a bit. But when it’s great, it’s great.

Love the production on this: energetic, inventive, fun. The rhymes suit it perfectly. Can hear the influence on my favourite hip-hop from the following decades like Wu Tang, MF Doom… Just too much skit-ery for a full score 🥲

Absolutely love the songs here, but a few too many skits in my opinion prevent it from 5 stars

Joyaaaaaaa, me encantó

Very fun old school hip hop

I loved this when it came out, but it's too long and has some annoying skits.

Genial para hacer scrapbooking

Such a clever, unique, innovative album. The production is outstanding. This still sounds so fresh over 35 years later.

1. Me Myself and I 2. Say No Go 3. (3 Is) The Magic Number

Forgot how freaking good De La is. Listened to more Tribe growing up so fun to hear Q-tip on this with jungle brothers too!

This has a sweetness and playfulness to it, something wholesome and old school, this sounds like people playing and genuinely having a great time together making music. Has some phenomenally fun beats and loops that must have been painstakingly made before modern tech was possible. SO fun

good lyrics, too many interludes

Gran álbum de Rap, te eleva la energía y te dan ganas de moverte. No conozco a los artistas, pero tienen pinta de ser pioneros en la cultura.

Fun album! Favourite song: Me, Myself & I

wished the popularity it had was longer

One of my favorite hip hop albums

Great album, tremendous

a quiet giant of 90s hip hop

Forgotten how good that album is … but I still don’t like the skits: amusing enough the first time, but after that I usually think they interfere with the flower of the music

Little unhinged and fun!

My only bit of familiarity of de la soul was from Superfast jellyfish and Feel Good Inc by Gorillaz, so I had no idea what this album was going to be like. Honestly, it was surprisingly good. I kinda liked its more positive sounding tone and sense of humour compared to other rap albums I have listened to. I definitely see how this would influence 90s hip hop bands such as Public Enemy. I like the progressive jazzy structure that this album uses, it almost feels like the hip hop equivalent of a frank zappa album. I should listen to more hip hop and rap albums like this in future.

De la orgee was unnecessary I won’t lie

Me gustó mucho, un poco largo pero re copado

these late 80's and early 90's hip hop albums are so goofy. Like Can U Keep A Secret talking about everybody having dandruff and Dante is a scrub is just so absurd and silly only to have serious topics talked about in other tracks. I get the genre was going through changes and finding its footing so I shouldnt be too hard on them, but I think there's a reason you dont hear about De La Soul as often as you do other hip hop pioneers, despite them contributing quite a bit. At the end of the day its fun, great beats, great samples, great lyricism, it just stumbles a little on the way.

This is a weird album. On one hand there’s a lot of elements I like about it. The sampling is phenomenal, the rhymes are great and many of the songs are catchy classics. On the other hand it’s corny, unfunny and cringey as hell at points (looking at you De La Orgee). The hits definitely elevate it but I get why I never got super into De La Soul. They’re just trying so hard to be funny and it falls flat every time. 90s hip hop albums and awful skits… name a more iconic duo

Commercially successful rap album (1989) with several hits. This is a fantastic debut album. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #103 Best Songs (3 Is) The Magic Number Eye Know Say No Go Buddy Me Myself and I

This is a great hip-hop album. The songs all have a fun exterior wrapped around something real at it's core. The beats and production are fantastic. While the sounds is of its time, it still holds up. A classic for a reason.

A nice sunny album , probably on the cheesy side

these guys seem pretty whimsical i wish i was there

Wow, this was fun!

Awesome sample-based beats that draw on quite an eclectic variety of sources. A quirky and fun listen from classic hip-hop history.

(6/7) these guys sound like they have a lot of fun

This really is a great hip-hop album! Awesome debut from an IG and innovative group.

Whoa, what a crazy record to have as a debut! 3 Feet High and Rising showcases De La Soul’s chops, lyrically, mentally and musically. For a debut album this really sets the bar high, at least 3 Feet High and Rising. -TomB

Fire hip hop

Absolute high point of my hip hop experience. Seminal in helping me shape what I love about rap and samples at a time when I was just figuring it out. This and Fear are essential records for me. Love it so much.

I absolutely love the out of pocket samples and the hands on Prince Paul production. I don't love having an album pushing 30 tracks, but it doesn't hurt the overall feel.

8.5/10

We all need to remember we need A Little Bit of Soap. Hands down a fun album mixed with good vibes and silly skits.

Samples plus samples plus samples as well as some samples. 3.9/5

lowkey kinda lit

Just a really fun and goofy album, and the beats and sampling are great. Although an hour long, the album doesn't get boring and most of the songs go by rather easily (except for De La Orgee of course). There are some weaker tracks here and there but this doesn't affect the final score too much.

Their debut album. Hip Hop. The humour and delivery style are great. Funky beats and fun to listen to. Decent production too. The skits are kind of lame in 2026 but I can get past that. This is definitely one of the most important and best Hip Hop albums ever.

Great hip-hop album, really fun listening. (3 Is) The Magic Number was my fav song and fav first listen of the album with Plug Tunin' (Last Chance To Comprehend) and Me Myself and I as my other highlights

Great Hiphop classic!

Mariguana + mente musical = maravillas

Great classic hip hop album! Love me some de la soul

When hop hip was fun. Too much gibberish between tracks that just gets more annoying with each listen but the tracks are exceptional so great album overall.

Incredible rap album. Loved the skits, loved the clear, colourful and story driven lyrics. Some of the lines painted pics. Was fun to listen to as a full album and get the full story. 1 song added to playlist.

I have a hard time imagining people not having at least a little bit of fun with this album. In a decade that was seeing the rise of gangsta rap, De La Soul provides what feels like an antithesis. There's an undoubtedly playful vibe throughout the entire record. While it's not perfect, there are just enough hits sprinkled in to keep your attention throughout. One of the most clear examples of passion and creativity in the genre. Highlights: (3 Is) The Magic Number Eye Know (feat. Otis Redding) Tread Water Me Myself and I

8 / 10 - Gute Laune Hip-Hop - Samples aus vielen verschiedenen Genres und Äras - höchst einflussreich für alternative hip-hop und "Jazz Rap" Favs: - (3 Is) The Magic Number - Me Myself And I

Whimsical and fun, sometimes a little too goofy for me. The sound is very warm and fits the tone of the lyrics really well.

A little more kitschy than their later records, and my personal least favorite of their first 4 albums, but still a classic with SO much creative sampling and quippy lyricism throughout.

I liked this. Enjoyed the whole album. Liked the Magic Number and Eye Know the best.

Loved the energy after several snoozefests!

Very vibey music

Very very fun album, hard to choose between a 3 and a 4. It's not something I'm blown away by and there are definitely songs I would not really care about ever revisiting BUT there are enough songs which are vibey for me to give it a 4 I guess.

I am a goofy kind of guy but this album is even too goofy for me. That said, the Steely Dan sample on Eye Know was a stroke of genius.

Very fun album. I love how random the lyrics are at some points like it’s just a bunch of improv comedy skits made by a group of friends. Overall very entertaining with a few bangers that I’d listen to again.

If you listen to this and DON'T smile, something is definitely wrong with you.

so fun easy listening

Great hip-hop pioneer album from sample wizards

Hell yes 4.25/5

There are too many hip hop albums with a full track of just moaning (or something similar). Otherwise this aged pretty well compared to other 80s hip hop

Very interesting! I think the use of samples was wonderful and gave the songs great energy. There was good rapport among the group which made the song light and fun, and I enjoyed the callbacks to older tracks along with the more strange lyrics. Only downside is that it almost got a little too nursery rhyme for me. I think the slower rhythm with the simpler rhymes weren't doing it favors and gave the album a more amateurish vibe.

I really like the vibe of this record. It's fun, and fresh, and bright. I even enjoy all the skits and throwaway tracks. My only real issue is the length. Like so many CD-era albums it's just too long, probably 20 minutes could've been cut. Save it for the next record, my dudes. FOUR STARS

The earliest hip hop album that I’ve really enjoyed so far. This is some brilliant and colorful sampling and production, with such a lighthearted flow and delivery over the top. The skits add a charm that puts into context the vibe of impulsively fucking about in the studio. Simply a lot of fun.

Another album I recognise the cover off but never listened to. Ideal city summer album and very obviously an influence

Hell yeah another classic I know. I guess I can hit this one before I vote though, it's actually not my fav De La album. That's likely gonna be De La Soul is Dead. But, looking forward to spinning again! It's actually been a while. 1. Intro - lol I forgot about this aspect, the game show albums of De La. This is the sort of album that I really wanna make, just dumb as hell but so so good. It makes the fun they had doing this come through. "Blood sucking freaks just like your mama" IS NUTS 2. 3 is a Magic Number - heck of a start for their first ever debut track. Schoolhouse Rock sample, very very cool. Right up my alley. The mix and multisampling is noticeably looser than it would become later, but it's working out still. Even their verses are a lot less tight but again, it's still working out because they are good at it. Not as good as they'd be in some years, but still high skill. God Schoolhouse Rock Bob Dorough sample is SO COOL. 3. Change in Speak - hey it's Bra! By Cymande! De La and Tribe had the best samples in the game. Jungle Brothers too. I guess all of Native Tongues? Anyway I'm trying not to pay too much attention to the music here and get more into the lyrics which i always have trouble with cuz the sampling work is so interesting to me. While trying to do that, their verses being less tight is coming back up again. Flow still great for everyone involved (Pos is in my top 5 for a reason) but they're voices literally aren't as clear as they'd be in the future. 4. Cool Breeze - lol 5. Can U Keep a Secret - I can imagine that if you don't find this kind of humor fun, you wouldn't like this album. I really, really do though. Just dudes having a good time and every few songs making something totally classic and great sounding. 6. Jenifa Taught Me - yeah see Paul's work is a lot looser here. Think about this and then Is Dead for something like Pease Porridge. It also has kind of an uneven sample but it remains funky throughout. This doesn't come close to that, even though I'm still able to listen and enjoy. The Little Derwin break is v funny. Again I bet if you take yourself too seriously, you wouldn't like that. But I do. 7. Ghetto Thang - funky up front, really like the sampling work here. That kinda cabasa groove with the bassline is working. I should hit the lyric sheet for this one, I hear some conscious stuff in here. 8. Transmitting Live from Mars - the French? Bon bon? Again dig the sample. This one is pretty Doom-like. 9. Eye Know - banger alert, been a favorite for ages. Anyone that samples Steely Dan is in for me. Works so well with the Otis Redding. This is an art I'd love to get good at. I wonder how to put all the elements together and hear them in your head before recording. Love their flow once again. Pos is my #1 in this group but Dave and Mase always keep up. 10. Take It Off - see man just sounds like black joy. Got a huge opportunity with the album and they're having a ton of fun with it while still making good music. Dream stuff. Take that Kangol off? Okay I'll tell 13 year old me immediately. 11. A Little Bit of Soap - I actually sing this one very often lol. One of my favorite tracks from the album genuinely. Someone was mad when they made this and it's v funny. 12. Tread Water - oh yeah I bet people were thinking this wasn't serious enough when it came out. It's too enjoyable, not serious enough, etc. It is serious though, when it needs to be. But when it doesn't? They're crafting stories with humor and joy and tight verses to boot. 13. Potholes in My Lawn - yup another classic. Never realized there's a jaw harp at the top of this and with the yodeling sample but I'm simply not surprised. Cmon man, yodeling sample? And it fits? How can you be angry about that? What kinda guy are you are? 14. Say No Go - this one I'm not as familiar with. Yeah I love their flow. It all works really well together, just similar enough to each other to facilitate cohesion when they're switching off verses. 15. Do as De La Does - this one is def satire on 80s hip hop. LL type stuff, maybe a little Grandmaster Flash with the call and response. The skits in the middle are still killing me lol. The Italian guy. 16. Plug Tunin - one of the best grooves on the album and that's really saying something. I often stim that "mmmmmmmyeayuhh" at the end of the groove after "Plug Tunin" is said. Crazy delay, whole whole quarter. Chuck D mention, neat. Also this came out in 88?? Sounds closer to mid 90s. 17. De La Orgee - this is crazy lol why would this happen. Someone just screaming bloody murder at the end is nuts. Why?? 18. Buddy - and the last track being followed by this one, Hip hop royalty. Somehow they got that Commodores sample to sound even crisper than it originally is. It's so clean. I don't know if I need to say much about this one, studded with the Native Tongues talent all over, critically lauded. You know how it is. I will say Q-Tip is here who is also top five for me, but his flow is still not as beloved to me as any of the 3 in De La. Afrika is on this?? 19. Description - hell yeah Poet by Sly and Fam Stone sample. Hey Q-Tip is back. Not sure I'm a huge fan of the flow they have going on between everyone here, but I like that sample. 20. Me Myself & I - well we've hit #1 on this album so there ya go. The recording on Spofity sounds kinda weird, that "play it now" has been replaced. I wonder why. It's the same Funky Worm sample but it's pitched differently on this recording. Hmm. Anyway, big classic. "BLACK IS BLAAACK" 21. This is A Recording - sample is sick. Like very sick, that bassline and the 1-4 synth. Their flow is back to normal here. Sample is The Sequence! Makes sense. The structure of the rhyme reminds me of Trapped Into Darkness a little. The way they state the title at the end of their verse. 22. I Can Do Anything (Delacratic) - again just dicking around lol wonderful. 23. D.A.I.S.Y Age - AWB sample up front kind of a tease! Wish that kept going, I was enjoying that. I'm not sure I would have chosen to cap the whole thing off with this one, it's a little weak for that purpose. It kind of acts as a theme so it makes sense, though. Hey they had an actual sweepstakes thing at the end of this! That's really cool. Yeah that was still as much fun as I remember it being. It's not their strongest outing, but for their very first and also in 88 it's really really really good. Identity was so clear right away and it makes the album that much more enjoyable. Knowing what De La would do later, I have a hard time giving a 5 but it's a solid 4.

Finally something fun and awesome! Love these guys, instant dance party!

Well done, but not my thing

It was fun!

I like a bit of Hippy Hop

Groovy. Selline mitte-nii-sügav ja pigem igapäevane lüürika, mulle täitsa meeldib. Oma ajastu jaoks vast revolutsiooniline kõla. Hea kraam, võiks veel kuulata. 4.3/5

3+ Being told you have dandruff and b.o. whilst being lyrically and musically soothed - lovely Strong start, tails off massively - Too long Imagine going into recording booth and making sex noises and thinking it's a good idea to put it out.

All the link pieces date it a bit, but then it launches into an all time classic bit of hip hop. 3 is the magic number is still cool af. So many amazing tracks on here. Loved the quirky nature of De La Soul. Feels a bit more cerebral and musical than most of the gangster stuff that soon followed. Looses its way a bit as an album, but when it’s good it’s absolutely brilliant. Helps that there are so many amazing samples on it. Made in the era before sample licensing killed off this kind of eclectic sample based music. Amazing it was also made before sampling was particularly easy to do as well. 3.5 rounded up to a 4

8/10 - now this is quintessential 80s hip hop, not offensive, just fun rhymes but still deep when it wants to be

Best Song: (3 is) The Magic Number. Such a great kickoff to the album. Great rhymes and a killer chorus. Worst Song: Take It Off. It's not clear whether this is a skit or a song, but for me it fails at being either. Overall: Fun, sprawling, jazzy, upbeat. This is a great album, The wordplay is great, the beats are great. The whole album feels like a party.

corny as hell (complimentary)

Highlights: (3 Is) The Magic Number, Jenifa Taught Me (Darwin's Revenge), Ghetto Thang, Eye Know, Tread Water, Say No Go, Me Myself and I, This Is a Recording 4 Living in a Fulltime Era (L.I.F.E.) Lowlights: Can U Keep a Secret, Do as De La Does This was a great fun listen, but the skits and interludes still don't really work for me. Seeing how I felt the same on a previous Rap album, maybe that's just something I don't get. Some of the mixing also sounded off to me, but maybe that's an effect of them needing to adjust samples.

subir le spectacle de rap des enfants mais en fait la vie est belle

skrit skrit c'est comme ca que j'imaginais le rap quand j'ecoutais pas de rap boum boum clap mais est ce que ce serait pas l'oeuf ou la poule du rap ?

I feel another apology coming on, this band was marketed as a sort of hippie hip hop group in the UK so I avoided them, but this is really exuberant, innovative and sharp. I am not a huge fan of samples and this album is full of them, but where else can you get Steely Dan, Otis Redding and Booker T Jones together in the same song (Eye Know) in such a way that it feels fresh. It remains only for me to ask..how many fibres are actually intertwined in a shredded wheat biscuit?

Not as good as I remember. Magic Number / Eye Know / Potholes in my Lawn / Me Myself and I are still laid back classics. Unfortunately there is alot of filler tracks and crappy skits that disrupt the listening experience and unfortunately means its a 4 and not a 5.

Such incredible sampling and exactly the type of 90s rap I love. Though not every song was my favorite and some had beats that were a bit repetitive, this reminded me a lot of A Tribe Called Quest. Still having its own vibe and feeling extremely fresh for being from 1989. Super intricate production and a great listening experience.

Wow. That intro into Magic Number? I like this. Ghetto Thang, Potholes in My Lawn, and Buddy (ft. Jungle Brothers) were all standouts.

Nothing better than hearing a sample of Peg by Steely Dan A great. So many good samples, sounds fresh, entertaining, bouncy, great vibes. Potholes in my lawn 4

Pretty awesome beats on this seminal hip hop album.I'll give it a 4

Fun album

It was very entertaining. I didn't quite understand the whole TV gameshow thing but it was kinda funny. This somewhat old jazz rap is very good. In the first song they rap about being 3 dudes in this project is the perfect combo, and I thought at first that people tried to separate them at the beginning. Couldn't really read much of the lyrics since I'm listening while working, but very good and entertaining overall.

Such a solid debut album. Great beats, just the right touch of humour, and honestly just so chill. I'd want this on vinyl if it weren't for the random sex interlude. 🫠

Pretty cool and unusual for Rap music from that time. I really enjoyed it.

Loving the old school rap albums

Man, this was a blast. Longer than necessary but still great. Biggest downside is that apparently this pioneered skits on albums, which was a terrible thing.

Liked it a lot. Pros: fun, positive lyrics, sampling from other songs is well done, feel good vibes. Cons: sounds a little dated, beats are a little repetitive. Would have loved this in the 1990s. Reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest who I loved back then.

I didn't even realize this was streaming again. There is a sonic wall of sound that runs through De La Soul's albums that is very pleasurable

I don't think you can help but be happy listening to this. And Jenifa made me laugh.

I liked it a whole lot more than I thought I would. Have been listening to other of their recordings as well now!!

Utterly terrible when trying to focus at work, great listen whilst cooking

A solid album throughout with quite a few big hits. Enjoyable.

I didn't think that I would recognise so much of this

What a charming experience. In their debut album, De La Soul presented us here a collection of very creative beats, smooth flows, a high sense of humor and a lot of interludes (which is really a remarkable aspect about it). From the 23 songs in total, I considered that 10 of them are are interludes or skits, that usually don't do anything, except for "A Little Bit of Soap", which I found to be the funniest short song, and "De La Orgee", which is a sex skit and gross to hear, but honestly, it isn't as vulgar as other sexual recording I've heard in other hip hop projects. The rest of the tracks are the real deal. The sampling on this album is excellent and it is what I think adds all the personality, with the very smooth rapping coming behind it. The vast majority of these tracks are super uplifting and fun to listen to, with the best examples I can think of being "The Magic Number", "Eye Know" and "Me Myself and I". There are also a handful of songs that sound more serious, such as "Ghetto Thang" or "This Is a Recording 4 Living In a Fulltime Era". These I unfortunately didn't like as much as the brighter parts, but still very decent. In the end, this is a very fun album. It may have a lot of filler, but the overall experience is very delightful.

Just a really fun album that put me in a good mood all day. An antidote to the endless grey and lifeless January I find myself in.

how do i know this back to front without ever having owned it

Pretty original.

Oh man. I loved this. If you're not concentrating it's one thing (which I liked) and if you are concentrating it's another (which I loved). Hip hop with a side serving of silly. Rap for the whole family. So happy I now know the Greatest Secret.

I felt is checked all the boxes for early hip-hop. Simple drums, guitar, a little goofiness. There was a lot of unnecessary filler tracks I felt but I think they were just trying to have fun. l thought it was good

This is a fun hip hop album with some superb use of samples. Proof that you can make great rap music without overdoing the overt violence and misogyny. Just remove the skits and orgee tracks and you have a 5 star album.

I have been meaning to dig into De La Soul's catalog for a long time. It's only very recently (2023) that they have been on streaming services at all, on account of stupid legalese around how their samples were cleared. No fun allowed. Anyway, this is an excellent record! Being that this is from '89 I can see that is set the stage stylistically for a lot of the threads hip-hop I've come to love the most. It feels old in a way that's quaint and nostalgic, without really feeling dated at all (total contrast with 2Pac here). I'm quite sure I'll be coming back to this one and I'm looking forward to the next three, which between this and those, the "heads" seem to spiritedly disagree as to which is their best.

Very fun! I listened twice, and on the second time it did feel a little more surface level goofy, as Trevor pointed out -- but it has a fresh sound with a lot of different lighter things going on, and Eye Know could crack my next Top 1000

Didn't enjoy as much as I expected to, but can see why it's on the list

Super fedt. Noget af det første hiphop, jeg har hørt, men faktisk mega nice.

These guys really just recorded every single thought they'd ever had. Good vibes though, some very cool grooves, genuinely funny, bit long tho. 7 / 10 Best track/s: Say No Go, (3 Is) The Magic Number, Tread Water

i fancy some of their songs, i get the vibe, but rather too much talking?

Oujee.

not for me but could see why people love it !

Ahh De La Soul. By no means the biggest name in hip hop, but they are in my opinion a big contributor. I love jazz rap, but it can be a little self serious at times. De la soul in my opinion shows a more eccentric side to jazz rap that you don't often see. It is a good vibe and I am always happy to see them as a feature such as on Tom Misch' "it runs through me" and ofcourse "Feel Good Inc". Overall a good record and a good reminder for me to give their newest record a shot

Fun album, great listen with some great humor in there. It feels like that really shitty white people rapping, but then actually good. It's slower but the flow is good. Plug tune is a particular favourite of mine.

This is hot. I can see why they're rising. The beats are great. The instrumentation is varied between all of the songs, which makes each track a little different and keeps the album continually interesting. The flow is incredible, and I'm nodding along to every song, if not vibing to the track. Not a fan of the orgy interlude song, though. That crosses a line for me. A really good rap album, though! I'm kind of surprised it's a late 80s album with the quality in production and sampling. I'm no expert on rap, but this definitely feels like one of the best all-time. Favorite Song(s): Transmitting Live from Mars, Eye Know

Also a classic. Can’t believe it’s ‘89.

how have I never heard this album??????? amazing.

What a good time!! Doing the running man dance in my livingroom room rn, is that shuffle dance??? That was a fun time and I enjoyed it, lots of energy! 2 people doing synchronous twirly dances kinda vibe and I like that.

Classic 90s hip hop. The sampling set the standard.

Seminal, a little overstuffed.

So funny

Feeling bad about being so mean about Steely Dan two days ago. They did at least give us a tune to be sampled so delightfully here on Eye Know. This was a really fun listen: a few of the interludes don't really add much but overall it's a great debut and shows how far rap had progressed since the beginning of the decade.

It's De La Soul. In a genre where most at the time were taking things way too seriously, these guys were having some fun.

De La Soul uses the coolest samples and beats from early hip hop. I really enjoyed this

Not more to say than very fun! Stand-outs - Change In Speak - Eye Know - Say No Go - Plug Tunin’ (Last Chance to Comprehend)

I really enjoyed this album!! it was creative and fun, and really good vibes here. I will be hearing songs from this album again good vibe to start my day!

Finally a hip hop album that is not about drugs, sex, violence and misogyny. It's a really fun album (albeit the jokes are a bit childish here and there), the interludes are great, and the general vibe of the album is energetic, infectious and a real mood booster. The album is from the late 1980s but it doesn't dated at all which is another plus. De La Soul showed a new way for other hip hop bands with this record. It's a tiny bit long (with about 10 minutes more). A 4.5 star album, might round it up to 5 stars.

pretty fire

I wish I had heard the full album when it came out in 1989 to fully appreciate its freshness and innovation at the time. I can glimpse the surprise and fun of the samples selected and I love the sweetness and play of the trio, as well as their nods back to funk, soul and jazz. As younger men, they lean a little too into juvenile skits for me. Overall, it’s a four.

Lots of fun! Heavy on the interlude tho

De La Soul has always been on my radar but never directly on my radar. My love for rap somehow went from Eric B and Rakim straight to gangsta rap. I am an angry person, so gangsta rap took much of the space in my ears during the time when this album came out. I have heard individual songs but never this entire album. So, I was excited to hear this one. I really enjoyed this album and can't believe there is only one De La Soul album in this book. It feels like their catalog may have another great album in it somewhere, so I am going to investigate. This is considered "clean" rap I would guess because there is only one track that has an "E" for explicit. My favorite tracks are: (3 Is) The Magic Number Change in Speak Eye Know Say No Go Buddy Me, Myself and I

Everyone in the world you got dandruff lol can you keep a secret?

Fun upbeat hip hop. Has the skits between songs that continued to be popular years later. Solid listen.

Considerably too long but you can’t argue with the head-nodding beats and polite raps of De La. Fav tracks: Eye Know, Potholes in my Lawn, Buddy, Me Myself and I RYM: Y (#1,081) Saved a song: Y

Some call it the "Dark Side Of The Moon" des Rap. Maybe, maybe nicht. Aber das Ganze macht Spaß und hat offensichtlich bei der Produktion auch Spaß gemacht. Extrapunkt für die Gameshow-Skits

Really great, fun and ambitious, full of different sounds. It's pretty perfect, but I have a couple gripes, a little too much about sex (in a not clever way) and too long with some songs I would not have included too keep it concise. But as a statement of what you want to do, and as a record it is just cool, and I will listen to it again, very happy to discover it.

Me encantó, muy wholesome. 9/10

Belongs on the list of great 80s early hip-hop albums.

As a musical theatre fan I LOVED the feel of this album. The spoken parts of the songs and the upbeat vibes were amazing!! Would definitely recommend to a bunch of theatre kids :)

Fun. But I didn’t like the little comedic songs.

Great fun - way ahead of its time. Intelligent hip hop which handles some usual topics but with wit and humour instead of crudeness.

This is a fun happy record. I hadn’t listened to the whole album before but knew the hits, and the whole thing is great. Sometimes I don’t go for this sort of music because it isn’t very emotive but had it on when cleaning the house and it is very positive and cool. A great record.

I love the hip hop and rap, and much as I enjoy listening to songs about street politics on my daily commute, it’s also good to listen to an album that’s upbeat. This album is as much about the production and DJ skills of Maseo, as it is the rapping. I hadn’t heard much de la soul prior to this, and was blown away at how many samples I recognised from other songs created much after this one. So I guess that says a lot about their influence on hip hop through the years, and this album in particular

Last album of 2025 and its a good one to end on. This is an absolute classic, one of the best of 80s hip hop. The verses are great, the skits are fun, the sampling is godly and the vibes are off the charts. I do feel its pretty long and by the end I find that I start to lose interest but I wouldn't say it drops in quality or anything. "Eye Know" is a song that I overplayed the hell out of over the last couple years but I still think its undeniably the highlight of this album. De La forever! Favorite track: Eye Know

very groovy and hip hoppy, orgy song was weird as shit though

De La Soul’s debut is a lot of fun. I remember enjoying the singles at the time but never picked the album up. I should’ve done. Their approach was completely unique in 1989 and has weathered well. It’s had a couple of spins today, and the combination of smart wordplay and tunes that stick, still sound fresh as a d.a.i.s.y. – I went there. 8/10

Often cited as the "Sgt. Pepper of hip-hop," this album introduced a psychedelic, humorous, and positive alternative (the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age") to the aggressive gangsta rap dominating the era. It triggered a landmark legal battle with the band The Turtles over an unauthorized sample, which permanently changed the music business by making sample clearance mandatory for all future artists. Producer Prince Paul pioneered the concept of inserting narrative "skits" between tracks to create a cohesive album experience, a technique later adopted by artists like Eminem and Kanye West. The production is famous for its eclectic sampling, weaving together sounds as diverse as Johnny Cash, Steely Dan, and French language instruction tapes.

3.5 - Good

Fun, nostalgic, and clever. Love the samples and really takes me back to a specific time with this very (at the time) innovative sound. I’m taking off one star for the skits that are annoying and unfortunately influenced other rap artists.

7/10 maybe 8

I didn’t discover De La Soul until last year, and man, I’ve been missing out. This album is clever, playful, and packed with creativity. The samples are everywhere, and they make it all work without sounding cluttered. What really stood out was how smart the writing is. The double entendres, the humor, and the constant wordplay are on another level. tThey were clearly a horny bunch when they made this album, but they handled it with wit instead of just being crude. Favorite song: Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge)

Really creative, I really liked the intro being continued throughout the album Not what I am normally into but a pleasant surprise Longer album than others so far fave songs: say no go me myself and i eye know like the music and vocals plus some of the features were cool 4.3 stars 8.5/10

Always a fan of jazz rap, and anything produced by Prince Paul really. This was really a precursor to 90s jazz rap and a great alternative to hardcore/gangster rap. I’m also extremely biased based on their samples like Steely Dan and Hall & Oates. It’s just an all around fun and good times record that’s great to throw on when you’re looking for some laid back good vibes due to the positive lyrics and funny skits.

This was such a fun era for rap. I grew up on Long Island, so the fashion and style of these bands — Tribe, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep — were making their way to the suburbs from the epicenter of Queens and Nassau County. I don’t think this album was that well received at the time, though it’s critically acclaimed and stands up over thirty years later. These guys were all teens when they made these albums, which is incredible.

Sounds so contemporary!

Incredible! I enjoyed is album very much. Added 3 songs onto my everyday playlist. Favorite track: (3 Is) The Magic Number Least favorite track: De La Orgee

*Lots of talking / talk show vibes * hip hop / rap * eclectic *long 4/5

Some great tracks but also dodgy ones.

Eye Know is a god damn banger. Me Myself and I is great. Rest of the album is decent. 3.5⭐️

A bit all over the place, but non-stop up tempo beats and fun.

Repeat

Favorite Track: Me Myself and I

Definitely feels dated now, but the legs are there for a great album. Solid early rap styling with a great flow

Long album bit some bangers

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I knew it was hip-hop, but I have only listened to dark, gangsta rap. De La Soul is not this. it was funny, and light and inventive. I really enjoyed this album.

that’s what i’m tawking aboutttt

Quelle heure est-il? Il est l’heure d’écouter la musique sympa de De La Soul! Anybody who makes a good song about haircuts and dandruff is okay with me! Social commentary with a good beat.

Overall Rating: 8.7/10 Favorite Song: Tread Water

liked the instrumental but it wasn’t for me per say

This album is a fun ride with great flow, solid beats, and tons of clever little samples sprinkled throughout. I could definitely do with fewer of the comedy bits, but overall it’s an enjoyable, upbeat listen.

Fun album and clever lyrics, sometimes very naughty.

I think the algorithm must be checking my previous review because yesterday I said "hiphop isn't my thing" and today I get another hiphop album...and it's pretty great actually. Next up, please can I get some good country to get the taste of Loretta Lynn out of my mouth? It's just super fun. Certainly gets a bit too wacky at times (what the fuck is De La Orgee) but it's great fun to listen to and has a great funk to it. I might go back and listen to this again some day actually. If you're like me and think "nah hiphop isn't my thing at all", I'd strongly suggest giving this a listen. It really doesn't feel like it's a whole hour (!!) and it's damn good. Favourite songs: (3 Is) The Magic Number, Me Myself and I

Upbeat, optimistic rap. It's carefree in a 60s-hippie-Dr. Seuss kind of way. Had to do a double take on that one track tho 🤨

I love this style of hip hop. It’s got great beats, socially conscious lyrics, positive vibes, soulful, and smooth. The music is fun, funny, and clever. I bought this CD when it was first released and I’ve missed listening to it.

this was sooo fun!!!!!

some people just know how to have fun

Really fun!!!

I’d never heard this whole album before and it was clever and not as repetitive as some similar albums from that era.

Soooooo much fun

just nonstop fun!! comeon ... it kicks ass

Great classic stuff here, gets marked down for too many filler skits and stuff in between the actual songs

317/1089 - I'm not a fan of sex noises in music. Some production is grating and some other songs are very good like Me Myself and I and the Steely Dan one.

Some great late 80’s hip hop. A classic.

A difficult album for me to rate. De la is one of my favourite artists in any genre, but this is one of their weakest albums in my opinion. I recognize how inventive it is - its hard to overstate how different this was from any hip hop being released at the time, but so much of it is goofy shit and dick jokes (3 feet high and rising, get it?) that I can’t rate it as highly as a lot of hip hop heads would. They don’t hit their stride until their next album (De la soul is dead) which, in my opinion, is much more interesting and effective album. While the subject matter isn’t particularly interesting, the production certainly is (the say no go sample is inspired - how do we have 9 Steely Dan albums on this list but no Hall and Oates??). I never come back to this whole album but there are 5 or 6 great songs I do listen to still. Probably a 3.6 that I’ll round up to a 4 given how groundbreaking it is

Great old-school hip hop album with playful lyrics. Love the hits, could skip a few of the fillers.

strongest 4 to date.

I love De La Soul. Their sampling is incredible, the rhythm of their tracks is always spot-on, and their lyrics manage to be both clever and funny. They’re pretty much the only hip hop group I can consistently get into. 3 Feet High and Rising is brilliant. I couldn’t wait for the opening intro to finish so I could get straight into “The Magic Number” — what a superb song. The album is packed with tracks that live up to that standard too. “Tread Water,” “Eye Know,” and “Jenifa Taught Me” are all fantastic, and then it closes with the iconic “Me, Myself and I.” The whole thing is a joy to listen to. Favourite track: “The Magic Number” and “Me, Myself and I” — absolute hip hop classics Least favourite track: The intro felt totally unnecessary Album artwork: Great cover, colourful and iconic

Full of great vibes

Standouts 3 is a Magic Number Tread Water Buddy Me Myself and I

just so fun the whole time. this is the typa stuff that makes the 80s better than the 90s for rap

album of joy and whimsy. there’s a perfect balance of 19 year olds making beautiful songs and 19 year olds just having fun and fucking around here. at first i was like “wow that’s a lot of interludes” but for the most part they don’t break up the flow at all. epic awesome sauce favorite: maybe jenifa taught me? least favorite: de la orgee 8/10

oh my goodness it's the epitome of a summer break. not only groundbreaking but just as warm and fuzzy as 1989. fav song: eye know

Rapp eins og ég fíla það.

Just freaking great

This was a lot of fun. Amazing production for their times, some of those beats made me dance in my kitchen with my toddler. Clever and light-hearted - they are serious when necessary, but never take themselves too seriously, which is so refreshing to hear. I'll be definitely coming back to this one. 4/5 with a strong potential for growth

Pretty dang good. A few great tracks. Makes me want to listen to their other albums.

Really fun songs and fun samples. A great way to end the week.

Why skits?

Not my usual genre but this one was quite fun! There were a couple of offputting tracks (orgee) but overall a solid listen.

4,5!! Rap springfyldt med personlighedbog gode beats ✨

I am not a hip hop guy but this is a classic

Groundbreaking group out of New York has some nice grooves and rap rhythms.

Great album, love the old school hip hop

Great stuff.

Thankfully I wasn't doing this challenge pre-2023, or else this would have been difficult to track down on streaming. Having De La Soul's entire catalog available online is a net positive in my eyes. Anyway, I'd consider this a significant album in the history of hip-hop. In a landscape where gangsta rap was pretty much dominating the genre, this stood out on its own with how...positive everything sounded and the unique samples used. Specifically the jazz and psychedelic-infused beats and samples make this an easily digestible listen for the most part (the sampling in "Eye Know"...*chef's kiss*). This album also sort of popularized the use of skits in hip-hop, for better or for worse. That's honestly the only slight I have with this album and the only part I'd argue that didn't age too well. (I mean, who's coming here to listen to "De La Orgee"? Come on, man...) There's some humor to be found in the quiz show skits, however. Despite some minor gripes, I'd still consider this album a cornerstone of hip-hop. The eclectic sampling and quirky lyricism quite honestly freshened the genre and De La Soul's contributions overall sort of ushered in the popularity of jazz rap/alternative hip-hop, which I'll always be fond of. R.I.P. Trugoy

Similar vibe to A Tribe Called Quest

Liked it a lot. Very danceable. Would have been a 5 if the running gag in-between tunes was missing.

I didn't even need to relisten, but I did. An eternal classic.

Innovative ✅ Influential ✅ Approachable ✅ Had fun doing it ✅ Fun to listen to ✅ Would listen to it again ❌

Well structured! Good sense of humor and nice vibes Highlights Me Myself and I, The Magic Number

Big beats and weird little skits, with a wide range of samples from the likes of Cymande, kids TV shows, Steely Dan, Funkadelic and Kraftwerk (to name but a few)... this is absolutely my type of hip-hop. De La Soul never seemed to take themselves too seriously, and, like The Beastie Boys, that irreverence and comedy comes across as a fun energy throughout the album. But the quality of this music is serious. 3 is a magic number, but this gets 4.5 stars.

That’s just fun

Had a lot of fun with this album. Very unique and goofy while having some great beats and east coast style

Sounds timeless. Great album experience with a few recognizable tracks from films I’ve seen.

Yeah this is really good stuff. Just something fun about it. Sounds great and really good lyrically. Always been on my list to listen to as well, I’ll delve further. Simpsons: Yes

And early hip-hop classic that delivers on its reputation.

Fun record

I found 3 Feet High and Rising to be a very good listen, especially since hip-hop isn't usually my go-to genre. The sound is notably mellow, rich in melody and groove, with rhythms that are far from monotonous or predictable. The vocals are excellent and never get tiresome. While the album starts strong with "The Magic Number," the following few tracks are merely good. The album truly hits its stride and takes off starting with "Eye Know" and continues to deliver from there, making for an overall happy vibe and an enjoyable listen. Even the skits didn't bother me! Four stars. 1 "Intro" (4/5) 2 "The Magic Number" (5/5) 3 "Change in Speak" (3/5) 4 "Cool Breeze on the Rocks" (3/5) 5 "Can U Keep a Secret" (3/5) 6 "Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge)" (3/5) 7 "Ghetto Thang" (3/5) 8 "Transmitting Live from Mars" (3/5) 9 "Eye Know" (5/5) 10 "Take It Off" (4/5) 11 "A Little Bit of Soap" (5/5) 12 "Tread Water" (5/5) 13 "Potholes in My Lawn" (4/5) 14 "Say No Go" (5/5) 15 "Do as De La Does" (3/5) 16 "Plug Tunin' (Last Chance to Comprehend)" (4/5) 17 "De La Orgee" (3/5) 18 "Buddy" (featuring Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip) (4/5) 19 "Description" (3/5) 20 "Me Myself and I" (5/5) 21 "This Is a Recording 4 Living in a Fulltime Era (L.I.F.E.)" Wahou ! C'est frais, c'est dynamique et y'a une petite vibe nonchalante qui fait trop kiffer

This was great. I don’t think I ever heard an album with more fun in it. This made me chuckle multiple times, it’s just so charming and loose. It’s musically interesting, the whole concept of a game show being called back to again and again was so unique and cool as well. It’s such a shame I never heard of this before because I really enjoyed my time listening to it. I respect an artist that can make crowd work sound enjoyable but an artist that can make crowd work enjoyable with me being the crowd is marvelous. I don’t think I would want to listen to individual songs much but the album as a whole? Great. Also happy to announce it’s on Spotify now

When a group has great chemistry and is having fun, you get a great album like this.

Hip Hop - Late 80s hip hop was playful sounding and certainly unique. They have a "sound" but it wasn't repetitive. I like the late Tribe Called Quest feature on the album. The simulated orgy track though was….uh….something…. I would listen to this album again.

The production and DJing on this album is still unparalleled, and the rapping is fun but definitely of it’s time.

Overall still a classic, but I was fighting a vague sense of disappointment where my memories of the album were better than the reality. Kinda like visiting your parents

Great artists. A witty and poetic approach to reality through hip hop, an enjoyable alternative to wannabe gangsters. Fantastic sampling and flow, which make a great album experience that transports you with the group. Didn't need to take us to De La Orgee, though — we could purge that track from every platform. Highly original, groundbreaking, and positive. But hasn't aged as well as Tribe. 4.5/5 I believe this work was also a huge influence for two of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, which shockingly are missing in 1001AYMHBYD: Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star Black on Both Sides

Very fun and interesting album with impeccable rhythm

Awesome. A classic. Hip hop is so steeped in the culture of the moment that listening to old albums can be a bit like a time capsule. Overall, it holds up. A bit long, but I enjoyed it.

What a blast. The energy, the humor, the imagination — it all feels alive. The beats are fresh even decades later, and the interludes actually enhance the concept rather than bog it down. 3 Feet High and Rising pulls off something rare: it’s both playful and technically sharp. I’m not always drawn to hip-hop concept records, but this one works start to finish.

I had fun, so did the artists. All around a good time!

Heel lekker

89 was the year of guilt free sampling apparently. This and Paul’s Boutique changed the game. Note to self: Stock up on Ludens

This is really fun. It’s wild that these guys almost single handedly invented the rap album skit concept. I grew up in a world where this was so much a part of hip-hop that I never even considered who started it. Now I know. There’s maybe a little TOO much going on with this album that keeps it from being perfect, but it’s still a lot of fun just the same.

What a fun album! Hip hop is not normally my jam, but this was really good. The Magic Number, Eye Know and Say No Go are exceptional.
