#375 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ I do understand they created some standards for bands plauing in the years to come; actually good sounding live recordings became a thing, general "setup" of a live band started to change with their dual guitar work and drummers and so forth. None the less, I don't get any more enjoyment out of the music by knowing these things. Maybe I take all of those things for granted today, but again, the music doesn't get any better by knowing this and I'm not going to be comparing it to even older and "lesser music". Even then it would not make this music better. It's blues. It's fine. Strong 2/5, I'll pad it with some extra for leading the way I guess; so 3/5
Would have loved to see these performances, but now it seems rather dated. Talented players but not an album for regular rotation.
Blues rock extended jams, guitars Whippin post
Alright lol. Not my thing
Musically very technical and hard to argue against but I’m not the biggest fan of jam bands. Also on a live album I want some more audience interaction.
I liked it, but I’ve also heard better rap albums from the same era
I don’t think this performance was worth putting the live version of this on here. I like the songs tho
There's some good quality country rock buried in here, but sadly it's buried in some very very long and pointless live jams. Do we really need to hear TWO twenty-minute jam sessions plus two more around the ten minute mark?
Not too bad, I enjoyed it for the most part.
I know this is very good blues-rock. But man these extended jams are just not my thing. Plus, to be perfectly honest, a couple times I had no idea a song even changed...it all just blurred together. I didn't hate listening to it, but I just don't need 15 minutes of noodling around on the instruments either.
The Allman Brothers? Yeah I guess they would be, or they'd be sisters. Bro really snuck in a christmas song and thought I wouldn't notice
I enjoyed listening to a live album. I grew up listening to the Allman Brothers, so this album was a bit nostalgic. Listening to it as an adult and with a more inclusive world view, however, it's hard to separate the South from the southern rock. Like, why are we calling songs "Whipping Post"?
Decent though it's a bit meander-y for me
Fine and fun
Didn’t hate
Creedence like, not so bad
Loud, vibrant blues rock live album. Highs are ridiculous. Very close to a strong 4. Just a little too boogie rock for my tastes at times.
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I enjoy the Allman Brothers, but I’ve only heard their studio stuff Favorite song(s)? Stormy Monday Overall Thoughts: I like the overall sound but I don’t like how long it went on. I can enjoy noodling and jamming when I’m at a concert, but live albums just don’t have the same level of excitement so it just kind of drags on. It wasn’t bad but I don’t get why this album is the Allman Brothers album on this list.
Not usually a fan of Live albums on this list, but this seems a good candidate as the bands offering is clearly unique and worth listening to to appreciate the musicianship. This said, I won't be coming back to this with the 20+minute jam sessions for the songs being simply too long! 6/10
Wow, those are some long songs. But pleasant.
Thought it was nice it was less self indulgent than the Layla album. Then the 20 minute guitar solo hit... Still. These things do happen at live shows. Idk. 3 I guess because I'm tired of all these 2s
Felt like an extended jam session rather than an album. Says something about the musicianship that it wasn’t until the penultimate track did I notice that most of the tracks were instrumental. Won’t revisit but wasn’t offensive.
Very listenable if unremarkable blues.
There are a couple of classic songs, and I think Duane Allman is the greatest slide guitar player of all time but guys, you can't have an 18 minute track in there.
Nice but didn’t resonate with me as much.
This was pretty cool, the last two tracks especially, fantastic guitar work, a fun jam session.
great guitars
They're certainly good players and some of the arrangements are cool, but a little goes a long way, and unfortunately we get a lot. Still, there's no hate. It's just not really my bag.
There is little that I like about this band. Not my jam. Trite lyrics. Women did 'em wrong so let's go tell mamma. ugh. But did it put a wee pep in my step while making a salad? Yes a very mid step.
Not a big blues guys but it wasn't too bad.
chill music
I am NOT listening to a song called whipping post 😭✌🏾
Not really my thing, but very well done. I could see enjoying this live.
Too noodlely by the end
Pretty generic 'white guy discovers the blues, gets extremely technically proficient but never learns why the blues is great' album. Spends approximately four hours noodling mindlessly. I get they're capable and that some people like jam bands (and I actually like long rock songs), but this is so painfully boring
they did better than i was assuming. the bar was unfortunately low
Feels really harsh giving this less than four because that version of Statesboro Blues is a near perfect blues song, but by the last two songs I was fed up and no longer willing to tolerate their long-winded guitar indulgences.
It's OK. Too long, not my favourite style of music, but not actually bad.
Repetitious
Without the weekend gap probably would have been a 4. Enjoyed it though
It was decent live album. I was not blown away by it.
it does ramble a bit too long, but still a good listen on a spring southern day.
Even though it is a live album at least it has clarity of a studio album. Still kind of just a really long jam session with a couple “covers” I am not familiar with the band but they kept saying this is someone else's song and then proceeded to play a 20 minute guitar solo. 5/10
Mindless jam rock. I enjoyed it though
Its jammy southern rock blues. Nothing more, nothing less.
Pretty cool guitar but honestly, a 20 minute song just isn't my jam.
Meh ⭐⭐⭐
I like the band. The music is great. Love me some blues and bluesy rock. That being said this was just way too long. Nobody needs a 22-minute track. Anything just becomes background at that length. 3/5 only because I do still really like the music, even if it’s too long to really engage with.
usually not a huge fan of live albums but this was good. just too long for my liking but the tracks were noice
Crazy. Starts out as quite an enjoyable live blues album but then descends into a mad guitar solo journey of discovery.
If you ever are in the mood for some very jammy 70s rock with a ton of solos from each of the different instruments then look no further than the Allman Brothers Band’s At The Fillmore East. This live project takes place at The Fillmore East in Manhattan on March 13th, 1971. While this live project is only 7 songs long it clocks in at a stunning 1 hour and 18 minutes, leaving a lot of room for the band to mess around and wow you with their tightly knit artistry. If you want less vocals and more of those sweet guitar sounds then this will surely be the project for you, personally I like a good balance of both and I found that this album really didn't have a lot of vocals which was a bit disappointing to myself. I don't have a lot to say here other than it was a pretty enjoyable live album, a lot different from what I'd usually turn on but in a really refreshing way. All I need to do now is get around to this band's studio work so I can understand this release a lot better.
está bien, nada del otro mundo
Great in spurts, but forgettable other times.
It reminds me of dad somehow
I usually don't like live recordings. There are a few exceptions. This isn't one of them. The music was pretty good and worth listening to again. The recording quality is mediocre. If I'd been at the concert, it might have been great. As it was, it was just average and a bit too long. 3/5
Guitar is so good
Not a bad live album
Opening with Statesboro Blues, a tight roadhouse burner with amazing slide guitar work, is a great beginning. I'm not too high on jam bands, but that performance is badass and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Unfortunately the next tracks revert to southern blues rock renditions and lose the momentum and charm sometimes with slightly corny and square arrangements and solos. Extended blues jams pad the songs out to 8, 13, 19 and 23 minutes so that even though there are only 7 songs, it had to be released as a double album. It's decent background music but slightly head-scratchingly soulless, almost like the Grateful Dead, but with less aimlessness.
A live album, sounds like the band had a great time, me not so much.
Dober
Anything becomes psychedelic if you just jam long enough.
It starts with nice blues music. Than it changes top Jazz. Thats the reason for 3 point.
Probably suffered from being a saturday album and from the line up of the week. Enjoyable listening but nothing stand out although one bit did make me say oo.
Hätte ne 4 sein können aber es zieht sich dann doch sehr 3/5
I got two consecutive live albums this week. I was initially put off by "At Filmore East"'s super-long tracks. It reminded me of The Grateful Dead's live album, which wasn't good. "At Filmore East", unlike my initial expectations, was actually alright. I hope I don't get another live album, I've already heard too many this week. 3 stars for "At Filmore East".
I love The Allman Brothers but honestly some of it gets a bit self indulgent after a bit. I know it’s live and everyone wants that 10 minute guitar solo but when it takes you 80 minutes to play 7 songs I’m a bit bored by track 3.
A bit long but still a good album
An hour twenty of the Allmans cooking. Oh, to have been there…
I mean I have no problems with it, I do appreciate the long ass songs, but there’s nothing amazing, solid listen tho
Technically very good, and of all the blues I’ve heard, this is up there with some of the better albums, but I’ve said before that it has a low ceiling for me, and despite the jamming solos throughout this, I yearned for something more than a 1,4,5 12 bar chord progression. Just feeling like something you could her bands a ten a penny playing out on a main drag past a number of bars ans pubs and little to make it truly stand out from the crowd.
Yeah, not a shabby band live at all.
Good jams but gets a little old/boring after a while. Likes: Stormy Morning, You Don’t Love Me
LONGEST guitar solo song EVER, then more long assss songs
Está bueno, nada del otro mundo
Good blues rock with some great guitar work. Don’t know that I’m here for 20 minute guitar solos, but I bet if you were in the room you would have lost your mind.
Didn't know what to expect, snuck a look at Wikipedia, okay maybe I know blues rock / "Southern rock". First two tracks were very disappointing, very meh. Track 3 (Stormy Monday) by contrast was very enjoyable and satisfying - slow blues with great jazz feels, rocking guitar solo working well with tight band, soul feel in the vocals, an excellent package. Tracks 4-5 not so memorable. Tracks 6 and 7, the extended jams, were high points, particularly guitar solo work in In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. So there is some great stuff here, that I would play again, but I would not want to have to sit through first two tracks again. So I won't say the album as a whole is Good, I'll say it's Not Bad, 6/10.
Great live album! A 3.8
Not the best Allman's album, but a better live album than other band's have.
i kinda liked it, it was groovy good to study!
I got it a little more than other Jam Bands I've listened to, and there are some great moments, but it's just background noise for a lot of it. Favorite Song: You Don't Love Me, The Whipping Post
American boomer rock. Hard to say anything else about it.
I appreciate the guitar playing and musicianship, but the overall sound feels very rooted in the Southern rock style—slow tempos, long jams, and organ-heavy grooves. Listening to it all the way through made me realize that I’m not as drawn to sustained, slow-burning intensity as I am to music with more forward momentum and clear structure. In that sense, even if the album isn’t fully to my taste, it helped clarify what I tend to respond to in music.
OK, but not my kind of groove. ★★★
I appreciate the importance of the recording and the great playing but the long solos are self satisfying and the songwriting is generic (of its time)
Good
3-3,5/5
now these guys are JAMMING and jamming and jamming for a long period of time
Takie do zagrania w tle
Pretty fun background music
I feared this was gonna be more shit kickin’ country. But much more bluesy. Good for me.
Very good musicians, some tracks were drawn out - not sure if this is because they were all performed live
Once again I'll say it... Live albums should not be in the list. It's great and all, but too much doodling and jamming.
One of the great live albums. Superb musicianship.
Blues rock very skillfully played, but meandering to the point that it’s hard to focus. It faded into the background and seemed to go on for ages.
s'okay I guess
Probably a good album hiding in here, but ended up being a bit meandering
Started more exciting than it ended
very rock and roll soundtrack coded. an easier listen than i thought.
3/5. If you like jamming, I think this album is closer to a 4 than a 3. If you don't, it's a 3, maybe even a 2. Most people don't like jamming, in my experience. As a guitarist who does, what I'll say is that this album is pretty damn decent. The tone, the song selection, the tightness of the band as a whole; everything is executed really well here. That said, there are better jam albums out there, and I severely doubt this will hold any sort of appeal to the average person.
I’m lyrics person, but this was a good “jam” album. The incorporation of certain tunes like ‘Amazing Grace’ in “You Don’t Love Me” and ‘Frère Jacques’ at the end of “Whipping Post” was interesting enough. All the more impressive these 20min songs/jam sessions were from live recordings, but not much crowd interaction or dialogue to make one feel like they were there.
A pretty good listen, but they were killing me with the 20 minute songs .
3.5
The list of live albums that I enjoy enough to listen to regularly (or even semi-regularly) is very small. I enjoyed this well enough, but the odds of me ever listening to it again are so slim that I'm hesitant to give it more than 3 stars. "You Don't Love Me" was my favorite track and that one might get some play, but as a whole, I'll probably leave this one behind.
A historically significant live album whose reputation rests more on musicianship than on emotional or conceptual depth. The Allman Brothers Band display outstanding ensemble chemistry, with fluid twin-guitar interplay and a rhythm section capable of sustaining long, disciplined improvisations. The performances feel confident and natural, capturing the band at a clear creative high. However, much of the album plays more like the kind of experience you’d get at a jazz-bar–style live show than a carefully shaped album production. The extended jams work well in the room, feeding off atmosphere and immediacy, but on record they can feel meandering and interchangeable. That said, because it functions more as a live document than as a fully realized album, and because it becomes long and homogeneous over time: 5.5/10
Not bad but also way too long. I’m not a jam bad person.
Its fine.
Great album and obviously they are very talented performers. A 23 min song of them jamming is wild, but also probably not something I'll end us listening to again.
mais um album curto mas longo ai mds FAVS (top 3): statesboro blues, done something wrong, you dont love me mençoes honrosas: in momory of elizabeth reed um bom album mas são poucas musicas q conseguem sustentar serem grandes, esse tem 3 tracks grandes e gostei de 2 mas acho q ficaria melhor se tivesse separado cada em 3 pq mds viu, a outro ficou massante dms KKKKK fazer oq ne nota final: 3/5
Band was super tight, the jams were had, I can see why this is considered one of the greatest live albums ever. However, 2 hours of 12 bar blues gets taxing.
Good album, would be great to own — I’m not sure what context I’d play it in though. It was a great front to back listen but nothing stood out
There was be a time when I would like this. It's just not in my taste at this point in life.
Hard pass way better blues bands around
5/10. It sounds decent but its not my sort of thing really
20 minutes is too long for a song. That being said, the middle part of this song was my favourite part of the album Live albums like this are absolutely meant for fans of the bands. I didn’t really like the “jamming” aspect of this album Fav songs: the middle part of You Don’t Love me (approx 7 mins to 17mins)
Incredible jam band album - not something I would listen to regularly though
wasn’t expecting to enjoy it - but found it to be such a cool, sprawling album
På grensa til å dette ned en karakter grunnet 20 minutter med gitarpusing. Litt lounge. Har et bruksområde.
That was a nice experience
It was aight. Very funky. Felt like the Persona 5 soundtrack at parts.
Het was leuk.. maar niet een album dat ik perse had willen horen
Better than the other two
Pretty boring
Oh boy, an hour-long album from The Allman Brothers Band! I know a few songs by these guys, but alas, not one of them is on this album (“Whipping Post” looks familiar, but I can’t say whether or not I’ve actually heard it before). I’m not a huge fan of blues rock, and I’m not typically a fan of live albums, so these Georgia boys have their work cut out for them today if they want to impress me. I’m not banking on enjoying this album, but maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised. In some ways, At Filmore East was worse than I expected, but in other ways, it was better than I expected, and overall, I’d say this album was fine. At Fillmore East wasn’t a bad album, but it’s just not the sort of thing that interests me. I don’t mind long instrumental breaks in songs, but this album just kind of wore me down because it relied so heavily on the guitar playing to drive its sound. For an album with a lot of instrumental sections, I just want more variety. I’d have loved some drum solos or organ solos, just anything to keep me engaged, and this album just didn’t have that. I did enjoy the jam session sections of these songs more as the album went on though, because once I became accustomed to the band’s way of playing, I’d find things for my ears to latch on to. I was shocked that I enjoyed the longer songs a bit more than the shorter songs, and I thought that “You Don’t Love Me,” “Hot ‘Lanta,” and “Whipping Post” were the best songs on this album. “Hot ‘Lanta” was probably my favorite, because it was really unique. I liked the organ playing, and the guitar parts were really interesting too. I don’t think I’d ever come back to this album again, but this did put me in the mood for “Jessica.”
I didn’t realize his much these guys rock! I did thing some of the longer songs didn’t need to be as long as they were.
I'm not normally a "jam band" fan. I think this is a great album to have on as background music, but it would be hard for me to just sit and listen to it with nothing else going on. Clearly a classic and this is definitely a great album for what it is, but just not my thing.
If you like an 8-minute guitar solo (or how about like 6 of them?), this is an album for you. An epic 7-track jam album with each track averaging over 10 minutes apiece. I prefer a tighter album in general, but as far as live albums go, this one is certainly one of the greats. It's not entirely my "jam," but I'm glad I listened before I died. 6/10
Ok pauseunderholdning.
The short songs were great. Brilliantly played blues and iconic guitar sounds. The long songs were toooo long though. Not sure who would listen to the extended versions?!
Dare i say it? A little too long? Like these guys know what they're doing, and some of these songs are fire, but idk if I'd revisit this, it was decent 6/10
These live albums recently are okay, but I guess I just prefer studio albums. Anyways, this is a decent background music.
Strong instrumental work. However, I find that the bluesier stuff isn’t always my jam. Appreciate this for what it is.
It’s a lot of noodling and jamming. And yknow what? I like noodling and jamming. But it can only make an album so good in my eyes. 6/10
Immediately hell yeah. First few seconds and I love it. I kinda knew I was gonna like it as I already know some of their songs. Lots of jamming and improvisation that feels so smooth. A mix of blues and southern rock, long guitar solos, love when the harmonica comes out. Maybe music always gives me this feeling, but I imagine it well for some film scenes: crazy on the road trips and adventures or just simple and ordinary life.
It was alright
Jamming gets a bit long winded at times but it always feels like there's something neat around the corner to keep you listening. Everything beyond Hot 'Lanta is fantastic, definitely prefer it to the former half of the album.
Not bad, just kinda generic. It feels like music your uncle would play at a family BBQ.
First I’ve heard of this band and intrigued. I have noticed that the more I work through this list, I do have a slight twinge at the many ways white people appropriated certain genres of music and here is another example. And 80 minutes. The bar is set… Some nice blues, grooves and rhythm and clearly talented. As so many descriptions say, it’s a jam band, and whilst that’s impressive there is something about it you can just drop in and out of. Maybe rather than the story or journey that comes from a studio album. ‘You Don’t Love Me’ feels like it epitomises this. Some moments of brilliance, some moments just waiting for them to finish 🤷🏻♂️ It’s funny, because there is a lot of talent and skill here but just doesn’t grab me in the ways that albums and songs that I value do (3.5)
This album is tedious. I might it better if I was on acid. It just seems to never end. It’s probably better than The Black Album though.
I got into the Allman Brothers Band when I first started listening to vinyl because their albums work so well in that medium but I’ve never been able to hear what people think is so great about this album. It always kind of fades into the background when I try to pay attention to it. Same result today. It’s not bad but I don’t think I really get it.
Not bad music. I like the Allman Brothers, but this was a bit of a slog to get through. The studio versions are better and more concise. 3/5
they jam well
Pretty standard blues, pretty funky but idk if its my jam
It's a nice little bluesy session.
it’s a good album, i kinda liked it but why the hell was one song 20 min long. the whole album only had 7 songs but lasted one hour and 18 min.
The grand finale of this album, an epic showing from "Whipping Post", saved this album from a lower ranking. I really expected much better from this album, particularly because of all the praise it gets. Favorite Track: "Whipping Post".
I really don't like the blues rock stuff but the rest of the record is great - especially the jazz fusion of Elizabeth Reed.
Good bluesy guitar rock, started to get repetitive - if cut down to single album would have been higher
Klinkt leuk. Vrolijk. Wel vaak wat zenuwachtige muziek. En veel hetzelfde. Laatste nummer van 23 minuten toch maar overgeslagen
This album has more solos than its playtime...man...neverending and a little annoying...
Man this is really jammy. Too jammy. I lost interest during the three reaaaaaaaaalllly long blues jams. Bassist ripped, though.
Blues-fapping as it is, but it could be worse.
I underestimated it
Clearly very talented and would probably make good background music.
meh i mean i get it, it’s really 70s with lots of instruments but i need music that i ca sing yknow like there was a like 18 minute song and it was mostly instruments
I mostly enjoyed listening to this. It’s really good quality blues rock. And I appreciate what a really well recorded live performance this is! It’s also 80 minutes long for 7 songs. It faded into the background quite a lot. It was a bit much. I did really like thinking about the venue. A small theatre where major acts would perform. My mom and dad went here all the time during their college years.
A classic white blues 70s sound. Undeniably great guitar soloing. Some of the jams went on too long. Some nice variation in songs added interest.
I like this kind of music and I like the Allman Brothers, but I don't need a 23 minute rendition of Whipping Post...
Nothing to write home about
Some great songs here—the live album is a little bit hard to compare to a regular one.
I'm an appreciator of outstanding musicianship, and I know that the energy of a live show -- the spell a great live band can set on its audience -- is hard to capture with only audio (or even audio and video...sometimes you just had to be there), but I don't have the patience to keep paying attention after eight minutes of guitar soloing. Even if it's exquisite guitar soloing, I just start yawning. So I get why this album is on this list, and I respect it. But it is definitely not for me.
At Fillmore East brings the blues, played by musicians who know the form inside out. Then the guitars take over. They stretch, circle, and keep going. The jamming opens a door where time slows down and nothing feels urgent. Some people find that freeing. I mostly feel it drift. Now and then, it clicks. In the final track especially, the band locks in. The vocals land just right, the groove tightens, and everything feels simple and right. For a moment, it’s perfect rock ’n’ roll. Then the solos return and the spell fades. I’m glad I listened. It feels like a record you’re supposed to hear at least once. But I don’t feel much need to go back. I don’t smoke weed, and this album feels like it wants you to.
I really liked it through maybe 2 songs, but was tired of it by the end. I don't typically go for live albums or jam bands or jazz, and today I realized that jam bands and jazz have a lot in common. 7 songs in 1 hour and 18 minutes was always going to be a hard sell for me. Great musicianship, though; that much is indisputable. This is probably awesome if you're high and just want to listen to music. 3.2
The guitar is insane. Definitely just bros jamming out.
Correcto
I liked the instrumental solos but majority of it I honestly did not enjoy that much. I think the vibe of it was not really for me, which is sad because I really did want to LOVE this.
Hat mich nicht abgeholt
Classic first track, good live set. Really long last two. Liked it, wouldn’t come back.
We have reached peak jam. That's it, they used it all up. That said, it's not offensive, just overlong.
Not for me, but reading other reviews increased my appreciation of it.
It was pretty good
It was fine. Not sure that all these live albums are essential
- it’s making me laugh how there’s only 7 songs but the album is 1 hr and 20 mins - Also funny that the genre is dad rock - It is jammy and a vibe, I just have a sneaking suspicion that all the songs will sound the same - A 19 min song??? You’re joking - Holy shit this one is 22 min. This should be illegal
Mjög góð riff og mörg hver flott gítarsóló sem þó urðu of löng og ég átti erfitt með að greina á milli laga
Ég var að fíla þetta í botn en svo fóru að koma alltof löng lög. Ég þarf smá pásu og breytingu á tempói.
Duane Allman was a spectacular guitarist. And the rest of the band also really knew their way around their instruments. And some of these songs are excellent. They'd be even more excellent if each one didn't need to showcase how GOOD the band is at playing their instruments. I really hate jam bands, and this may not fall neatly into that category, but all of the poor instincts are there.
I gotta admit this is not exactly my type of music, so every song sounds a little bit samey for me (I know, I know, not a fair assessment).
Altså ja, det er jam band shit, men jeg sys faktisk det er ret fed jam band shit
Just a lot of jamming.. Was a bit long, but I enjoyed most of it.
I knew these guys are incredibly talented before going into this, and I love bands who jam but this was almost too much jam for me.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I don’t think live albums need to be on this list, there ARE a few exceptions - I’ll admit that. This is not one of those exceptions. Ripping, noodling, bluesy guitar riffs.
Really solid album, just kinda wanted it to be over
Ok rock album, but the longer jam sessions make it feel unfocused to me.
Never heard this or the band before…. I know that Indie Ears don’t always hear indulgent guitar solos correctly, however I enjoyed this when it thumped along or felt bluesy. I can hear the influence of Cream, and with hindsight how they influenced all the following 70’s blues rock bands. Favourites; 1. Done Somebody Wrong 2. Stormy Monday 3. Statesboro Blues
I zoned out. Where am I? Who brought me here? Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐⭐: It was okay.
Meh. It's ok. Nothing bad stands out but at the same time it's also nothing that special.
Pas mal ça ! Ça s'écoute avec plaisir
This album was middle of the road for me as I didn’t feel any particular way about the Allman Brothers
If you were wondering where the cross were it is right her on this album, blues meets jazz. As a baby baby boomer this is one of the groups I knew existed but never really experienced.
Old school cool, maybe a bit too jammy
Местами неплохая музыка, но альбом живого выступления никак не может входить в число величайших.
I like The Allman Brothers Band, but I don't like live albums. Some songs become unnecessarily long because of the mini-jam sessions. This doesn't mean the jam sessions aren't good or aren't worth listening to, but it can be overdone. This album is a case of it being overdone. Case in point: Whipping Post. Studio version is just over 5 minutes and the live version on this album is nearly 23 minutes.
Groupe inconnu. =>3.5/5
It's not an album I love, unlike some people. I think it's just okay. Probably better than okay as I guess it isn't as boring as I think it is.
About half of this album sounds aggressively mid. Maybe it felt more remarkable at the time. Then you hit the stand outs. Those are brilliant. It's like a baseball game. It'll bore you to tears, but every now and then you'll see magic.
Decent jam album.
By 1971, The Allman Brothers Band had already put out two tightly constructed studio albums that were groovy and bluesy, much in the same vein as Creedence Clearwater Revival, but slower and more eclectic, and the band decided they wanted to explore this more 'jam happy' version of themselves on their third release: enter 'At Fillmore East', widely considered one of the greatest live records ever released. The clear highlights on this record are the Allman brothers themselves, with Gregg and Duane trading off stunning passages on organ and guitar respectively. It's like Gregg holds the fort with his groovy, jazzy organ parts and soulful vocals while Duane ventures forth to raise up the magical protections for the fort in his stunning guitar riffs. There's also plenty of room for fellow lead guitarist Dickey Betts to shine too, but it's clear Duane is the greater force of nature here on the six-string. But while there is some stunning musicianship on this album, it doesn't exactly translate into memorable standalone songs. While tracks like 'You Don't Love Me', 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' and 'Whipping Post' are indeed iconic, their 10+ minute run times (20+ in Whipping Post's case) give the record more of a free jazz atmosphere. You can imagine this would get a raucous reaction live, but when you're listening to it on record, it's harder to place yourself in the moment. The musicianship on this album is exceptional, however don't expect the lyrics and themes to speak to you all that much. It's essentially explorative and tuneful Southern rock/blues with strong jazz sensibilities. Perfect music to tune out to, maybe with a J or two. Best songs: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post
Very bluesy. Good album but because it’s live a bit too many solos and tangents.
Génial pour les fan de solo de guitare. Malheureusement ce n'est pas mon cas.
Meh, the guitar and riffs were cool but they just lasted so long I lost interest after a while. Is there talent, sure but its just not for me.
It's OK, but too noodly. I don't like jams; I like songs.
Another band that I get along fine with, but maybe think are a bit overrated. The first side is almost totally reliant on very standard blues which obviously they do extremely confidently, but it’s a bit too good-time for my tastes. Isn’t good-time blues a contradiction? After that they stretch out, step away a little from the restrictive blues format and things start to come alive. The side-long You Don’t Love Me is still blues but a more progressive type that goes all over the place over many sections. Side 3 comes and you’d be forgiven for thinking someone had put a Santana record in the back of the gatefold when you weren’t looking. There's a decidedly Latin flavour and it really suits them I find both “Hot ‘Lanta” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” the compelling heart of this album. Side four is 20+ minutes of Whipping Post which is undeniably impressive. The album is very good and if TABB are your vibe, I can understand how you might consider this the greatest live album ever, but that’s way too far for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I liked this album but it was way too long and drawn out
jam band album. gets a little loose and noodly
I normally don't care for live albums because they can be so long. This wasn't exactly an exception, though I normally like these guys.
More instrumental than I expected
Not what I’d usually go for but a pleasant listen
why not
no songs really stood out
Should've known another live album was coming since it had been a few weeks. (Insert my general complaint about live-albums lacking half the experience here). Ah well, at least this one was pretty good. The album started off really strong. The first few tracks were good and made me think maybe I'd found a true live album that would crack the five-star limit. Unfortunately, that's when the jams started. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of jam bands generally and I enjoy going to shows where the bands do jam sets. But there's a big difference between experiencing a jam live and hearing it recorded. Here, the combination of the tracks being recordings of concert jams is just too many steps removed for me. If I had been there for this show, I'd probably think the jamming was awesome. The recording unfortunately doesn't translate the feeling of the experience all that well. That aside, it's easy to appreciate how strong the music is. Just solid blues rock from some of the greats in the genre. The talent is showcased on the jams too, even if they aren't as evocative through a recording. Really gotta listen to more of Allman's guitar work; between this and Layla I realize I've been missing out on him. If I were that talented I'd probably jam my ass off and make everyone listen to it too. In sum, what was almost certainly a fantastic live concert experience makes for a pretty good recorded album. Despite the negatives, I enjoyed it well enough. Overall: 3.4/5
Long
Wanted to give it a 4 as they perform so well but got a bit fed up by the end of another solo that felt like it didn't add too much.
When you think about it, the concept of a live album is largely pointless, especially with non-fans. There's no way of recreating the feeling of being at a gig where the music is playing through a large PA system and the feeling of spontaneity. Sure, a modern hi-fi can go really loud, but that would seriously piss the neighbours off. And most live albums are touched up or overdubbed prior to release. The other point is, unless the band is grass roots level, you would probably only go if you already know a few of their songs. This is a long way of saying they sound like a great live band, the music here is perfectly fine (some great guitar playing) but with no previous connection to any of the material or the band, I don't much care for it either.
Very blues rock lots of solos.
There is undoubtedly musical talent going on here but it's all a bit generic blues rock which faded into (perfectly acceptable) background sounds.
Guitar noodling at it's finest. Very Rhythm and Blues. Some quite good tracks there, but it certainly could have done without a 23 minute solo jam session at the end.
I wasn't familiar with the Allman Brothers... this album is ultimately a big olde jammin' session, I enjoyed it well enough on first listen, doubt I'd revisit.
pure blues rock album
The allman brothers are great musicians, and there’s a lot of great stuff on the album, but the songs just drag on a little too much. There might be times where this would be a 4 for me, but at least this listen it was a strong 3.
Better than expected. Bluesy and fun
It’s ok. A bit too long. The jamming part is good if you like it. I am not a fan of improvised music but this is decent. Also the album also has well produced tracks too. So it’s a pleasant listen overall. The jamming becomes a bit unnecessary for me but it could just be my personal taste.
Fun album, but a jam band listen when you’re not a huge fan or there in person can feel like a bit of a slog. All credit to this album, but probably wouldn’t go back to it.
I like the general sound and vibe, but I’m really not a huge fan of long improvisational songs. If I can see it, it’s a lot more impressive. But just listening isn’t particularly interesting.
It was ok but super long, relatively generic sounding guitar solos don’t really play too well just listening to on a record. I’m sure it would be dope to see live but it doesn’t do too much for me in this type of setting. Would’ve also loved to at least see one of their hits on this album.
It’s really good, I’m sure experiencing this live was absolutely insane. But a decades old jam band live recording is not usually my vibe for most weeknights. Would definitely be good to have on in the background, especially with the length. I could totally give this a four, it’s just a couple too many solos for my liking.
This is a pretty good live album recording for a jam band if that's what you're into. The unfortunate thing is I don't really care for jam bands (especially live recordings) unless I'm sitting on a lawn and drinking a beer as the sun is setting.
I enjoy the Allman Brothers, and I enjoy Jam Bands, but even for a dude who likes both of those things, this dragged a bit.
man i really wish they would chill with the stupid live albums and just pick artists better albums
The least annoying of the jam band hippies.
Not bad.
above average bluesy jam band filler. a bit too long but still a fun time. 3.5/5
Classic

3.49999999 /5
fine music just kinda boring
High 3, pretty good live album but not my favourite. Has some longer lulls but also some incredible moments. Also I only listened to the original tracks listed on wikipedia and not the entire deluxe edition.
Guitars.
Live albums don't do much for me, though this would have been a fun one to be at.
As always first listen not as good as the last. Big sound, very bluesy, very guitary. Very good if love the guitar Great blues rock performance
Long as hell, would have liked it better if I was there, but I liked it more as it continued
This was pretty good, as live albums go. I actually felt like I would have enjoyed being there at times when listening to this
Just feels like a long jam session, as is the Allman Brothers wont I suppose, which can be ok sometimes, but filling a CD with just 7 meandering songs is criminal, that's an average of 10 minutes each. It ebs and flows, but you gotta be in a jammy bluesy frame of mind to appreciate this.
Kinda boring
Favourite Track: Whipping Post
Overly long blues rock noodling sort of ruins what might have been some good songs 3*
Cool mais rien d’extravagant
Enjoyable, and good for background.
Funky stuff
The musicianship is impressive but there’s nothing to enjoy beyond that
quite mid id say
Unfortunately 6 hours long so I won’t be listening to it all in a day, but I like what I’ve heard so far. Love live albums so maybe I’m biased but there is a lot of music to enjoy here.
grateful deadish. its fine, nothing stand out. good vibes.
loved stormy monday and the one that started with you. but not totally my kind of music - no words made me tune out a bit. still enjoyed the blend of jazz and blues and rock!
It's great when it doesn't meander but unfortunately it meanders a little too much
Drenched in blues, stretched into jams that twist and turn. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Statesboro Blues - Done Somebody Wrong - Stormy Monday
An enjoyable blues-rock live record, parts Hendrix and parts CCR (especially in that Fogerty-esque vocal twang), but certainly far less memorable than those two artists. This was my introduction to the Allman Brothers Band, but I can't say it blew me away. Ultimately, this is just some solid jammy blues-rock to turn on in the background.
nice but too long
against all my better judgement it gets a 3. im a sucker for instrumentals
This obviously would have been fun live and it wasn't bad but I probably won't listen to it again. My favourite part was when they played joy to the world for like three seconds in 'you don't love me'. Fav- Statesboro Blues
It’s good jam music but I can’t bring myself to listen to 23 minute tracks. That’s why I stopped listening to TOOL.
Cover 5 It's ok. I mean, in the right mood this is a good album, great even. I don't I'll come back to it though. I wouldn't necessarily skip it if it were playing though.
ITS SIX HOURS LONG???? They remind me of zz top Ok so they are a jam band. Nothing against that. Not my style though.
I went back and forth on this album. While l love the extended jams, I am just not a very big blues fan. Plus some of the jams seemed to just last with out making any major changes
Some cool solos in there, otherwise pretty standard blues.
easy
There must have been a process people went through before experiencing an Allman Brothers concert or live album that made them seem awesome. Unfortunately, I had no mind-altering substances before this listen, so they sounded talented but mostly pretty average.
Would have been a 2, but I enjoyed the solo at the end. 3.
They are great musicians, but I don't have time for a live jam band record.
Very good, Almost couldn't tell it was live.
Listened March 2021. I appreciate the incredible musicianship, but 20 minute jams aren't really my thing.
Jammin' them down-low blues. Exquisite guitar work. The deluxe version flows better but is super dang long. Imagine being so good that you could play a guitar solo essentially for 2 hours...
I'm surprised I hadn't heard this before. But ultimately, I'm not a fan of jams
I really like the Allman Brothers and their style of Southern blues…but I don’t like endless jamming. Three stars.
I can see how it would be enjoyable live, the appeal is that you already know the songs and see what extra instrumentation they add. It's perfectly fine blues rock that can be left on in the background of my office and no one would complain. Would I actively choose to listen to it again? Likely no.
Classic songs that unfortunately I’ve heard too much. Lots of guitar noodling that is really good but not my jam. I won’t seek out but I don’t mind if it’s playing.
It's blues rock. Not sure what more to say.
A classic.
Meh
You can kick me out of the fam for this, but I didn’t love it. It was fine?
I was enjoying it at first but it was just too long and it all felt too similar.
Riff baseret uendeligheds blues album. Langt i spyttet.
Okay fed blues-rock. Men der går lidt for meget Pink Floyd i den under de lange jam-sessions
I mean I like a blues jam as much as the next guy but unless I'm watching it in person or playing in the band, it kind of gets boring after a while. The playing was all great but this kind of music is just repetitive by design. I would never listen to this whole thing again. 2.5/5
Superb raw blues with pockets of ambience amidst layers of quality musicianship.
pensaba que iba a ser idie, pero por suerte es algo que mola mas pero no acabo de pillar la vibra. Ojito a la cancion de 20 min.
Genuinely enjoyed. Great musicians.
Favorite track: In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed. Hasta mañana, gente.
It grew on me at the end
Proggy, country rock with 10 minute guitar solos. A pioneering libe album which I will return to.
The Allman Brothers Band has a blues, progressive rock sound that's so easy to slip into. Their blues is more Southern rock than, say, the Rolling Stones' brand of blues, and most progressive rock is nowhere near the blues. That alone made the Allman Brothers' sound so unique and different, even if this was a live album (which I abhor, usually). As the album went on, I was less enthused. The jam sessions went for too long, but it's not like I was upset at Duane Allman on the guitar. This live album absolutely showed why he's considered one of the best.
So, I love, and I mean LOVE, "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider", and yes, both songs are very blues rock. So I'm familiar with The Allman Brothers Band in this But I guess I wasn't quite prepared for the level of blues rock jam session that "At Fillmore East" would bring to the table. It was not bad, but it was definitely a little too much for my taste.
Great blues driven jam band classic rock but I always prefer studio albums to live recordings.
Surprised by how much I liked this. Really good rocky blues. Didn't get bogged down by the genre. Not to much of that slow, guitar-lead stuff. On the other hand, how long can a song be? At 23 mins, that last song is longer than some albums!
Kinda long. Kinda live
Good classic rock live album. Enjoyable.
I bet this was an incredible show to see. And I bet it would be great to relive that experience by listening to this album. But I wasn't there, so it's just a poorly recorded, run-of-the-mill blues record.
Amazing production often forgetting this was a live album until the crowd noise hit. Incredible musicianship and vocals to match. The length of some of the jam parts and solos got a little tedious but overall still a fun listen. I'm definitely more into ABB studio albums.
Así como Coco Chanel dijo que antes de salir de la casa, te miraras al espejo y te sacaras alguna cosa; los hermanos Allman debieron haber visto que tenían 3 tracks de 15 minutos que le sobraban a este disco.
