Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Movin' On Up and Loaded are out of this world, but the rest felt a little lacklustre. 🤷
Pretty good. Blues-inflected seemingly by way of the Stones. Lightly electronic in the sample-heavy way of early 90s British stuff. Inoffensive, recognizable while feeling new. Your mind will remain safely un-blown but you will be entertained.
Majaa aa raha hain. Aur sunta hun. And will report back. Need to listen more. Got tired of some tunes because I have heard this album before
Entrancing
This album seems to be a bit of a pioneer for a type of sound that really rose to prominence in the late 90s. It's not entirely my thing, but the vibes are good and the songs are alright. Good music to accompany a task.
Interesting genre surfing between different kinds of rock, pop and electronic house stuff. I wouldn't really say it was more than serviceable at all of them
not my cup of rock
Heard of this artist but not sure if I truly listened to them. Very dancey, kind of what I thought this band was. Not like techno dancey. It's cool.
Used to really enjoy this album but a bit sick of it now
Loved the first song on the album, but it kind of fell off the rails after that for me. “Movin’ On Up” was the only song like that on the album, so the rest left me wanting. None of the songs were bad, but a few went on way too long. I think there was a little too much mixing of genres because this album never felt anchored at any point. There was some real potential here, but it never quite made it.
As "party vibe" music, this is great. It's pretty boring if you're trying to engage with it. I could see myself putting this on in the background of a lively get-together, but I don't really want to sit down with it. But art has its place. One of the guys from fun released an album for dogs, so...
Would give it a 3.5, had me groovin
Some good ones, some dull ones
Complete
This has been on other Must Hear lists in the past. I tried it when it came out, I tried it when it was recommended 20 yrs later, it's just ok. It's mixed really well, has layers, has good instrumentation and a solid groove. But the song's don't all pay off and definitely sound like they were released in 1991. No doubt this album has a following with millions of listens for all but one track ("Come Together") and over 108M listens for the one "hit" song "Movin' On Up". My favorite track is "Loaded" which was a crowd pleaser back then. "Damaged" would be my second favorite. It's quintessential 90's, but it didn't have a huge impact in the US. Minor hits with "Movin'..." & "Loaded". Not influential here, very little radio play today, no lasting impact on music. 2.5-3 stars from me.
I know and like Movin' on up, and initially I was not a fan of the subsequent tracks, but as the album went on, I feel like it got a little more experimental which I did enjoy. It didn't end up being what I expected, but it's not a bad set of songs
Reasonably enjoyable
Basically a 3.5, but I’m feeling 3. Fun and groovy, but gets a little stale.
Really middle of the road for me. Its a fun listen and pretty ahead of its time, but I almost never search for it myself. I really enjoy the remix / cover of Slip Inside This House and the overall album keeps me somewhat engaged throughout. Primal Scream makes music that noone else really seems to make, they have their own Electronic / Psychedelic niche that they fulfill really well.
Umm this was a weird ass album by a band I've never heard of lol it was another one of those not good but not bad ones lol very uninteresting
I thought a band named Primal Scream would be more intense.
I was never a huge Primal Scream fan even when they were big, but it's nice to get this album (especially compared to the somewhat baffling inclusion of their album "Vanishing Point" in this connection), mainly because it's more or less their attempt at a greatest hits album. It's pretty hard to deny the ear worm of "Loaded" (and I'm glad to have finally found out that the sampled movie clip is from Peter Fonda's "The Wild Angels"), and "Movin' on up" and "Higher than the sun" and "Come together" are decent tracks too; kudos too for their cover of 13th Floor Elevators' "Slip inside this house". The rest is pretty undistinguished, unfortunately, but still not horrible, and definitely acid-house dance oriented.
The decongestant half of the album, much more interesting than the first. The First sounds like general rave music.
Real misleading title, lads. Pleasant enough, though.
Has always been a bit too meandering and over-long for me, but there’s some brilliant tunes on here. Moving On Up is obviously elite.
Banger club music but wouldn’t listen to it in day-to-day life
I got Spacemen 3 vibes from I'm Comin' Down and that made me happy. I am really looking forward to the Spacemen 3 album
I found this album to be a bit long but, generally, it was worth the listen.
Movin' on up is the obvious, big hit. It still sounds good. The rest of the album is pretty good, but nothing hits that height.
Primal Scream’s Screamadelica is a swirling, woozy experiment that flirts with transcendence but too often stumbles into indulgence. When the band leans into the sweet spot where classic rock swagger meets early '90s rave culture, the results are undeniably thrilling. Opener “Movin’ on Up” stands as a highlight, a sun-drenched gospel-rock jam that channels the Stones circa Exile on Main St., full of bubbling percussion, grimy guitar licks, a strong bassline, and a rousing choir. “Come Together (Farley Mix)” keeps the energy going with bright piano riffs, jazzy horns, and churning percussion, though its eight-minute sprawl wears thin. “Loaded” boasts a catchy horn loop and an easygoing swagger, but like much of the album, it drags on longer than necessary. The latter half of Screamadelica shifts into a more melancholic, atmospheric mode, trading the energy for introspection. While the mood is rich and the production often hypnotic, the songwriting sometimes gets lost in the haze. Primal Scream clearly aim for a genre-bending trip that unites rock’s emotional heft with the communal euphoria of dance music. When they nail the balance, the album soars; when they don’t, it feels like an endless drift with no real destination.
Wavy, floaty and a great soundtrack for a day in the life.
Mostly acoustic pop, meanders from bobbing to plodding through deeper stuff
No ei tämä ollutkaan helppoa rokkia. Taustamusaa johonkin.
3 sterne
I had no idea who this was or what to expect, but it turned out to be pretty decent!
A few ok songs on the second half, otherwise aged and not very memorable 30+ years down the road listening to this without drugs and not in a rave. I liked klf, massive attack etc better.
Boring, good for doing anki at the same time, but not really something I could listen to alone. Second monitor stuff.
Its age is showing, if I'd heard this in the 90s, I probably would've loved it dearly.
1. Movin on up 2. Loaded 3. Slip inside this house 3.5
A decent listen. I could see liking it more after a few listens.
Not entirely sure about this psych-dance-gospel-dub smoothie.
On the one hand, this isn't bad. On the other hand, it's not great, and falls firmly into the basket of 1990s UK bands that the author has a fondness for.
Pretty long songs on here, but they're good. I wouldn't call this jawdropping, but great for a house party as background music. 3.25/5
i can hear this album being played on rooftops in the summer
An interesting blend of styles. Soulful at times, experimental at others. Extremely intriguing music. Feels like they've taken notes from multiple decades and decided to mix it up. Absolutely love the harmonies in Movin' On Up. Unfortunately it loses me after that until Come Together and Loaded. I can see why people like the other tracks but once the synths come in it doesn't really hit me right. Not my kind of sound. I do feel a little Beach Boys influence in there though, which I absolutely love. The bongos, brass, and gospel choir make the best bits in my opinion. I'm Coming Down is incredible all around. Overall super solid! Not something I'd listen to a lot but a couple of stand outs for sure
Started good but lost me a little towards the end
Brit pop at its core, pointing to much greater versions of the genre
As if the Mick Jagger took acid at a European techno club in 1989. Crazy sound design that somehow just fucking works, but too many down songs for a super high rating. 6/10
3.5
Haha! Was definitely expecting not to like this, given the artist name and album name, but it was actually quite enjoyable.
the 1990's were a huge time for electronica. first off, the "rave" became an actual thing people went to instead of something you simply did accompanied with the words "rant and" beforehand. it was a time in which people started gathering together, dancing to trippy, psychedelic music, and doing copious amounts of drugs. it was the beginning of a revolution, and a lot of people wanted in, including the rockers. of course, this was before grunge and Britpop swept away the dancers to their own separate corner, from 1988 to the end of the Cold War, it seemed like the two could collaborate. Primal Scream are a band best known for making the first C86 song you're likely to hear with "Velocity Girl". Bobby Gillespie, the group's leader, never really jived with just one sound, and would basically switch up what Primal Scream "was" for each album. For 1991's Halloween party, they went as E ravers, swinging their arms and sweating up a storm. you could consider this a form of cultural appropriation, sure, but i do get the feeling that the group knew what they were doing. in between "Movin' On Up" and "Loaded" like a bunch of different attempts at electronic squibbles, tribal house, tinky Casio pianos, and proto-trip hop that are there not because it's what Gillespie thought those genres sounded like, but because he was probably spending some time at the Hacienda and wanted to make a record that sounded like going to that club, both in emotion and feeling. unfortunately, the last third of the feeling -- the comedown if you will -- often fades into the background and sends me into apathy, but i truly do love "Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts)" because of how committed it is to creating this sort of "walking home at 3 AM" atmosphere. "Screamadelica" is dated, sure. "Screamadelica" isn't even really what Primal Scream would sound like in a few years, choosing to pursue the rootsy sound of "Damaged" for some reason or another. i mean this as honestly and positively as i can: "Screamadelica" feels like fanfiction. someone was a fan of a thing they heard while high off their tits in a club, and wanted to make more of that thing, not even necessarily in their own style; just more. i respect it.
I didn't know this album or the band but as I was listening I kept wondering why several of the songs sounded so familiar. After a while I finally realized that those songs were used in a Cindy Crawford exercise video from the early 90's! This isn't something I would normally listen to but it's not bad.
eclectic as hell, moments i liked but it lost me here and there
Another nice surprise
3.4 If I was more familiar with the album, I would probably give it a higher rating. Really interesting percussion/drum tracks on the album and particularly on Higher on the Sun
Winced as I hit play, expecting this to be a continuation of the audio-rape Metallica had inflicted on my eardrums the day before. Luckily, despite being called Primal Scream with an album called Screamadelica, it was actually an okay listen. Nothing incredible, pretty tame. A middle of the road 3 for me.
For an album with the title it has, by a band with the name they have, I was just glad it wasn’t hardcore metal screaming. Pleasant listening, Enjoyed Come Together and Loaded. Both seemed like nostalgic football songs you’d see on a barclaysman highlight reel. John Carew smacking the top corner or Dmitry Payet embarrassing people. Sprinkle in some Jay-Jay Okocha, Michu and Tim Cahill and you’re flying. Other than that, very background-ish. Middle of the road with Prime Barclays doing it a favour and rounding it up to a 3
I enjoy it a lot
I’d give this a 3.5, it was pretty interesting
I had never heard of nor heard this band before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. I found the album to be a mixed bag…I really liked about half of the songs, and the rest I found to be throw-always. At times I found the lead vocalist’s penchant for sliding between the notes annoying, but enjoyed the gospel-like sound of the backing singers. I enjoyed the horns as well. And as I often comment, most of these songs were just too long. It’s hard for me to land on a rating for this one, but I will give it a three. I will also save it, and will listen to some of the songs again.
Gets points for being kinda cool, and for really being a no skip afair, but looses points for having an utter lack of soul
Funky I like it
I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Good background rhythm. Plus horns. Phish-ish in it had a laid back vibe in parts.
Felt like a mix between early Stones, Duran Duran, and whatever Jesus Jones was trying to be.
pleasant
I didn’t know what to expect and it was fine. Admittedly I was preoccupied with work and suck while listening but what I bought didn’t interest me enough to listen again. I think a theee is warranted here.
Correcto
The overly repetitious 90s strike again. A few decent tracks but found it a chore overall.
Did not resonate with me as much as I would have
Not I what I was expecting at all based on the band name. They really threw all their influences in the blender on this one: psychedelica, Beatles, Stones, gospel, samples, lots of instruments, and even a proto-house track. It’s good but I also don’t want to relisten. I’m going 4 bc 3.5 isn’t an option, and I’m more positive than my usual neutral 3 rating
Ilmeisesti tätä pitäisi kuunnella aineissa. Vähän onkin semmoista rentouttavaa ja maalailevaa elektronisia looppeja. Kappaleissa kanssa vähän intialaisia viboja. Parhaat: Movin' on Up,
The best album artwork we have had on the list so far. I can see that this broke new ground when it arrived, and I like the hits on the album, but quite a few duds on there too. Top track: loaded
psychedelic electronica that forms a trance-like basis that's fun to work to. Really need to re-listen to this album.
Scottish wizards. Late 80s early 90s UK dance music continues to prove that it can be done while still having songs, with lyrics and structure and shit. Later ignorant british mfs take note!
This felt like multiple bands in one. All over the place in terms of feel and genre.
I think these guys might be on drugs!
First track: this isn’t bad what’s everyone complaining about? The rest of the album: oh.
Decent. Good music, meh vocals.
Fav Song: I'm Coming Down Man, Happy Mondays really did a number on the industry in the UK. That being said, this album was fun and had some great production to boot. It's late enough into Britpop's lifespan that it wasn't bland, but early enough to retain that iconic 90's British sound.
A bit all over the place but there are enough good tracks on here to make this a decent listen. I wish they would have gone all in on the electronica side because those were the best songs on the album.
Groovy. I liked it.
I liked some of it (notably Movin' on Up), but overall it was just too much psychedelica for me.
Interesting but meh.
Cool album cover Really don’t understand why Movin On Up is on this, it sounds nothing like the rest of the album That said, it is by far my favourite song and made this generally quite boring album a decent amount better.
Interesting........
I'm hard-pressed to think of a reason to listen to this again, or, ten hours later, to remember any songs. Seems somehow simultaneously drug-filled and sleepy.
First half of the album was okay but then things fell apart. “Come Together” was twice as long as it needed to be, and the latter half of the album was soft and uninteresting.
That's not my taste in music. But ok.
This is fine, though there's nothing primal or screamy about it. A lot of silly sounds in a disco-ish dance-music kind of format. Perfectly okay to have on in the background.
Damn, this has all kinds of sounds. Very house-based with some rock, most might recognize "Movin' on Up" right off the bat. That being said, I might be too sober to fully enjoy this. Gotta strap in for this one.
Tonally a little funky, and not in the good way. The long songs are always the highlight, almost wish this was an instrumental band at some points. When it gets in a groove it gets REAL good
this thing is all over the place
Better than I thought. Never heard of it before, but it deserves a solid 3.5. But it isn't a 4.
I’m not really a big fan of this, but it’s good at what it is.
It was okay.
3+
I knew very little from this band, it's not really my thing. But I have to say it's well made and well mastered - the album sounds great. It has dance aspects (and the repetitiveness that goes with it which is good on a dance floor but less so in a living room), but it's more/ better than daft dance music. Some groovy lines in there. A 3* because it's not really my thing and it doesn't sound that novel to me. Still a fine album.
I think we’ve had a few of primal scream in the 1001 and the SAY lists, this is the best one. Some familiar ones, some forgettable but overall a fine album.
I didn't know anything about this band, which is interesting because the top track Movin' On Up has over 100M plays on spotify. The album was OK. Nothing stood out, but it was fine as background music while working or at the gym.
Feels like more of a curio piece. A time capsule from that window right before grunge broke, where pop music was filled with electronica, rain forest sounds and the occasional choir or gregorian chant.
a fairly interesting album. it was an unexpected combination of 90s psychedelic rock revival and 90s house music. i thought it was a pretty novel combination of sounds that i hadn't really heard much of. that being said, the songs here were a bit hit or miss, some of which were neat and some of which were a bit dreadful. but nevertheless, an interesting listen.
It has its moments but drags on way too much
3-
The album was interesting. I'll have to listen to it again. 3/5
A band called Primal Scream sounding like this is wild; I assumed they were going to be hardcore. This is a really strange album to think of giving a rating to. I haven't heard it before and it went all over the place. It's not the most skillful thing I've ever heard but it does what it's trying to well. The age of it is a bit surprising and is likely a big part of why it's on the list. Shine like Stars had a really nice feeling, I don't think it was the best song but I enjoyed it. Great way to close the album.
Name is misleading, there is no screaming involved. 90s dance music. Not bad, but I wanted screams. Stand-out: Movin' on Up
Liked the indie sleeze Kinda felt all over the place with some of these Nothing stood out
Meh most of the songs exhausted me. I can see how some would love it, I usually like acid house stuff so I’m surprised I didn’t enjoy it more. I’m sure this one would require a few listens for it to really hit Rating: 3.2
Not much to hear of a indie rock band. This is more a mixture of house, electronica, and psychedelic rock while using tons of substances. But, in a way, entertaining.
Thoughts before listening: This album gets a ton of praise by modern music sites even though I don't really remember it being all that big of a deal when I was growing up. At least not in the US...this might have had a bigger impact in the UK. Anyway, I feel like these guys are Britpop mixed with dance music. Review: I like this and can see why these guys get cited so much by modern music writers. The dance elements here really do distinguish these guys from the rest of the pack when it comes to 90s British alt rock bands, and I can hear where this could have been a big influence on a group like LCD Soundsystem. That being said, the album does drag a little with some of the songs being repetitive and overly long. I'll give this 3-stars although if I had a nostalgic connection with this album I'd probably go higher.
91年的专,有种新世纪的感觉
second half is chill vibes i like it
...
good but not my thing
01) Movin' On Up - 9,5 02) Slip Inside This House - 7,0 03) Don't Fight It, Feel It - 7,0 04) Higher than the Sun - 8,0 05) Inner Flight - 7,0 06) Come Together - 6,0 07) Loaded - 7,5 08) Damaged - 7,5 09) I'm Comin' Down - 7,0 10) Higher than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts) - 6,5 11) Shine Like Stars - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,23 (72/100) Current ranking: 172/290 This is a very strange one. Just when you think you know what genre they are playing, the next song starts. And I really lived under the delusion that Primal Scream were a rock band. I guess "Rocks" misled me. Do I like this? Well, I'm not sure, it's different in any case. I had the feeling that I was listening to a remixed version of a real album. "Come Together" became extremely irritating after a while. "Higher Than The Sun" is ok, but second mix is totally unnecessary. "Moving on up" is the only real, unremixed song on the album. In my opinion.
A few interesting tracks, but this one didn't really grab me. I don't think this would even crack the list of the top 30 best albums of 1991.
This one has me confused. As a child of britpop im intimately familiar with primal scream and the hits on this stand out like absolute beacons. The opening track musy be one of the best album openers ever and loaded is a classic. But a listen through the album reveals such inconsistency in sound, genre and quality that i struggled. Maybe i need 5 listens through to appreciate the subtlety but for now im just a bit confused. 3.5 stars rounded down
It was ok. Not my usual type of music but I listened to it all the way through. Enjoyable but didn’t add it to my list.
Some cracking stuff on here. 3.5 stars.
A nice sounding album with a pleasant surprise in “Damaged”. I’d listen again.
it's the 90s!
Meh. Started strong and then dropped off. Kinda irritating near the end with too long songs.
Fun album. I thought some songs were very nice to listen and jam out to, but the overall project lacked direction and purpose from my perspective. It feels more alternative-experimental than straight alternative. I still liked it a lot, though!
Well this was a surprise! I think I was expecting some-kind of death metal - this music couldn’t be further from it! I could hear the influence of Rolling stone's in Loaded and Kraftwerk in Higher than the Sun. Probably could have been a bit shorter and cut out some of the fluff - but it was ok and I enjoyed a bit of happy clappy to bring home the end of a long week. One ongoing gripe is I wish the original track list was linked in Spotify - rather than the extended versions of albums!
Not sure that I was in a clubbing mood to listen to this. It was fine and I remember parts of it from in the 90s but nothing crazy.
Ich weiss nicht was genau anfangen mit diesem breiten Spektrum, aber mir geht es zuviel in den House Stil.
Way fun. A few songs really didnt get up to par though.
I was in between a 2 and a 3 throughout the whole listen, I felt like some songs were 3s and others 2s. But because I had never heard of this band before and I was glad I listened to this one, I'll give it a 3.
This was a mixed bag for me. Some recommend me of the Manchester scene like Inspired Carpets, then it moved into trip hop and bounced around between those worlds. What I didn't find was a cohesive album, just a string of different ideas each produced well as what they were.
5/10 songs added to playlist (not counting acoustic) Best song: Come Together (Farley Mix) The beats in this album are really just music to the ears & the album, going in with a 3.2 rating really exceeded expectations.
this album has different themes. very 90s.
Very goofy The last song was awful
Kinda mid psychadeilia. Its a vibe but nothing to go crazy over
I fucking loce glasgow
There was a time when I really appreciated and enjoyed all this Britpop stuff, but now that piano sound grates on me. EVERYONE was banging away on it like a drunken cowboy in an old west saloon, and now, woof, not as fun as it used to be. Take some of that out, though, and this is a wonderful electronic stoner album that really helped shape some cool electronica in the coming decade. For that, I can forgive the piano parts.
This was so not what I thought Primal Scream was. Soup Dragons, trip hoppy, but nothing too snazzy. Though a 3 rating for me, it will get me to give the band a listen on Pandora.
Hodgepodge of influences and styles. The leas vocals the better the music is.
I always struggled with Primal Scream back in the day. Saw them at Reading Festival and was not too keen then but I was only interested in seeing heavier bands. On relistening its a good album but not one I would reach for often, still Movin' on up is a classic hit. Stand out tracks: - Movin' on up - Loaded - Damaged - I'm coming down - Higher than the sun (a dub symphony in two parts) - Stone my soul
Melange
Better than expected
2.5
Unique and fun
I can't be the only one who noticed that Movin' On Up sounds exactly like Love the One You're With, right
The highs are high; Movin On Up and Loaded are two absolute anthems of the baggy era and helped spawn a genre and a whole range of subcultures. I owned this album but didn’t remember any of it outside those two tracks. On a few pills at an early 90s rave this album, I’m sure, was as good as it gets. I just find that on headphones in 2024, it’s hard to keep enjoying the formula for a full hour. Influential and brilliant in its time but happy to move on now.
Opening song was OK, then I was quickly moved into a bunch of stuff I didn't really enjoy. Had too much of the electronica dance vibe sound and the songs were way too long. Until....Damaged. Complete change of pace and with every song that expresses a man's love for his woman, I thought of my wife. I thought this was a beautiful song and immediately downloaded. For anyone who is felt the power of deep love, I have to believe this song hit home in a lot of ways. My wife is my addiction. I am stoned, strung out and crazy for my girl. She's got those eyes that makes a man go crazy. One look from her and that is all I need. Some times I feel like I'm climbing walls just get my fix and I come running every time she's calling me baby. She will tell me I'm crazy but really, I'm just stoned, stoned. stoned in love with her even after 29 years of marriage. Hell, with each passing day I get a little more stoned with my love for her. I am lucky to have her in my life. Just typing this, I can't wait to get home and wrap my arms around her. I know a bunch are thinking what a simp, but I hope some day every one finds that love that just makes your body and mind ache with love and desire. Pretty sure I am one of the very lucky ones. Anyway, just love the song Damaged and even I'm Coming down was OK, but for the most part, too long and just not my thing. I'm giving Damaged 5 stars. The rest of the album was about a 2 for me. Will round to 3 on the strength of Damaged. Happy Birthday June 11, Will!
I liked it and I didn’t like it.
Found it a bit Inconsistent with a lot of the more dance-inspired stuff dragging. There are still some real standout moments like Damaged and the first track and respect the experimentation of the album, but didn't find it consistent enough
They have the hit. I've got to give it to them. Mix of many genres, kept in a good way. Nice. 3.5/5.
It was okay.
This was a mixed bag. Mostly pretty decent.
I see band names like this and I expect it to be hardcore. This was not. There were some decent songs, but others that were just off.
Not terrible. I expected it to be different. It was super chill. Nice to listen to while getting ready.
Koortsdroom
Had some good highs and a few lows. Overall, not bad. 3/5
Not my favourite Primal Scream album. But some good tracks
This was an interesting surprise. I was expecting a lot more of the "Movin' on Up" indie rock and roll, but it turns out to be a wild ride across genres like dub and acid house. Sometimes it hits, and sometimes it sounds awful. I could understand if you loved or hated this album - Come Together embodies this for me, delicately toeing the line between euphoric and tacky. For me the album on the whole drags - the second rendition of Higher Than the Sun (there's that Jah Wobble fellow again) is painfully mundane, you'd really have to be higher than the sun to endure it. Fave Tracks: Slip Inside This House, Loaded 3.1/5
Dance beats and a bright, pop energy. A lot of songs sound like they were made while on drugs for people to do drugs to. A bunch of them stretch out with extended mixes perfect for DJs to play with. “Inner Flight” surprised me. It’s dreamy and beautiful with this odd, warped carnival bounce floating through the song. The end of the album is pretty mellow. I guess it’s the come down after the party? Ooh that jazz solo at the end of “I’m Comin Down” is great. Is that a sax? I love this album cover. Very memorable.
Dang, I was away for the weekend and when I got home my browser lost my initial review for this but I'll sum it up. "Movin' on Up" is truly amazing (I thought this was a cover?), but the rest of the album didn't really come close. I did like how eclectic the whole shebang was. 3/5! Great album cover, it feels like something you question when you first see it but then after years of seeing it, it just kind of makes sense in a way.
Screaming rn
Some bangers
Vibe sits right in that early 90's alt feel. Pretty okay.
I think I would like it if I listened to it a bit more so I might try again. Found some moments went on too long but still a cool album. Will I listen to again: 50%
Couple great tunes, some unengaging.
I was tempted to say this sounded like the Rolling Stones if they had gone spacey psychedelic — or whatever. I don't know what to qualify this music as anymore. I didn't love it. I'm getting pretty sick of the repetitive loop offerings from this list. This is another that falls between a 2-3 for me. But I've been harsh lately, so this gets the bump just so I don't seem like such a dick all the time. Just some of the time.
It's OK. Good background noise, but I wasn't really enraptured by it. Favorite tracks: - Movin' on Up - Slip Inside This House - Higher Than the Sun
Definitely not for me, but I totally get the hype around this. I personally think it’s strongest when it’s close to pure ’90s dance, and it’s rarely close enough for me. While everything here does have at least a hint of a dance elements or two [i.e. mostly when it sounds closer to a remix than an original rock song], it’s never enough to distract me from its base influences of British indie or psychedelic pastiche, and I’m not the target audience for either of those sounds. Still, I never once wanted to turn it off, which is insane, given its runtime. If a friend played this for me at their house or in their car, I wouldn’t be bothered. I get how this could be someone’s favorite album, and I now know why it’s on a lot of lists like this, but it’s not for me, simple and plan.
some songs I liked, others I did not
Movin' On Up is pretty good, although familiar. Same for 'Come Together'. The rest of the album feels a bit... meh. Beats for clubs full of folks taking ecstasy rather than actually well put together songs in their own right. Not bad, but I wouldn't bother going back to this, I don't think.
Pleasant songs to listen to. Some sound like backing tracks, others sound like atmospheric songs. "Higher than the Sun" and "Inner Flight" were good
Fun 90s Party Music. You can tell they loved having a sampler.
Actually more fun than I expected
ekki alveg minn tebolli. þó sprettir sem gefa tilefni til annarar yfirferðar. 3,5.
Fun, easy, chill, vibe music.
I enjoyed it. Was nice to zone out to during work.
Honestly really love the fusion of genres here. This album is ahead of its time, just not for me
Not a huge fan, liked a small handful of songs.
Thai sounds like a 1990s video game soundtrack. That is both amazing and also bad. It ages this terribly. That said most of the songs are really fun and the overall vibes strike me in just such a way that I was jovial throughout.
OK the opposite of what it claims to be?
An okay album that sounds like the rest of the BritPop from the same time period on this list. 3/5.
with a name like primal scream, I certainly didn't expect the first song to be like it was. nor the album. Don't know if that set me up for not liking this as much but it wasn't my cup of tea. reminded me of george michael and jesus jones which is not a bad thing but I just wasn't really into it.
Cudan mix svacega, pogotovo cudno nakon prve pjesme. Ali solidno, barem 3.5
I love the two songs on this album that were decent singles (Movin on Up and Loaded), so I was interested to hear the full album. The rest of the album is a nice collection of musical experimentation and I enjoyed it, but most of it is easily forgettable ambient background music. Some of the repetitive 6 - 8 minutes songs could have been pared down to 4 minutes at the most as they went on a bit too long.
A lot going on this album. Hear two different songs and you wouldn’t know it’s the same band or album. I like it. At times it sounds somewhat like the Stones. A lot of long jams that are fun and catchy. Repetitive at times but overall a good album. Fun listen. Good for a long car ride or light day or chores around the house.
Even I can understand the influence of this album. Songs are pretty good.
An album's album back in its day. I feel like, though, it is of its time and feels a bit dated in 2024. No doubt captured a scene (that I wasn't really part of), but still has some slappers.
For better and for worse, an album that truly helped jump-start what I see as a typical Electronic sound of the 90s. Even at its most boring and repetitive, this was at least an interesting mix of sound to get into. I just unfortunately couldn’t quite vibe with the long clubby mixes that dominate the record, probably because I listened to it on the way to work where I couldn’t be under the influence of psychedelics. Nevertheless, it certainly isn’t terrible to listen to! Like I said, it at least has that soul/indie/electro fusion to sound interesting when the song structures themselves lose my interest. Top tracks: Movin’ On Up, Slip Inside This House, Loaded
Muy psicodélico para mi gusto, pero no está mal como música de fondo.
3.5
Listened Before? N Interesting stuff. It does sound kinda rave-y as others have said but I didn't hate it. I probably won't just listen to it on repeat or anything but it does have it's moments of awesomeness (especially to someone who remembers the 90s). Good listen. Lots of influences here. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Movin' on Up
Decent.
Solid 3. Not my thing.
3.8. Psychedelic indie
a good album, probably more a 3.5 as I dont think it has aged hugely well
Pretty all over the place, had it on and none of it really grabbed me. Some interesting sounds in Slip Inside This House and Inner Fight.
The first one that I have no recollection of whatsoever--I've never even heard of this band. In my defense (sort of), I was listening to hair metal in 1991.
I will take the time to listen to them, I always thought they were heavy metal based on the name LOL
Pretty enjoyable. Something I’d quite happily listen to again. Easy to listen to and enjoy despite being different from what I’d normally choose to listen to.
The definition of middle of the road. This album doesn't really play it safe, but there is no sense of pushing boundaries. It's unlikely to offend anyone, while being a tiny step above mall music. It's not uptempo, nor is it relaxing, it's not background music, nor does it encourage active listening. In short.... ...it's fine
Good album
Never heard of it and didn’t know what to expect. Will listen again, it’s different
One can hear a lot of influences --sort of Rolling Stones vibe on a few, then acid house/indie/pop/gospel/psychedelia for the others. Seems like they took a big swing and landed. Imagine this was super influential. Not a fan of the vocals, but pretty good overall. 3.7
Ça psychédèle un max et c'est franchement pas ce qu'on leur demandait de faire en 1991.
Je n'ai rien à raconter sur cet album, ne l'ayant écouté que d'une oreille en plein Donjon des Forgerons
Meh
Not too bad. Not really my thing, but I can appreciate it.
Don’t get why so many folk love this album so much; it was OK at best.
Movin on up. wie baldam nochde flaming lips. geili giti mega troche. soulige shit. Some really high highs. And then the stuff that wasn’t a high was pretty mellow/trippy.
How did this band get away with a name like primal scream? So, not what I expected, but not bad. This was easy to listen to, which had not been true of many other instrument dominant albums. I think you could give me an edible and this album and entertain me for a whole afternoon. Favorite track was slip inside the house.
3.4, wel een leuk album. heel uniek maar soms een beetje saai
Quite the medley of sounds! Favorite track: Damaged
Some surprisingly mellow tracks as well as the hits.
Ok but overrated.
When it was good it was very, very good, But when it was bad it was bollocks.
Scottish band with a dreamier, gentler sound than you'd expect with 'Primal Scream' as the band name. Even some song titles imply that they'd be a hard rock angry band. Movin' On Up is my favourite track.
Always had a soft spot for the band.
Reminds me of the Rollong Stones somehow … but in happy?
This album has some odd parts, but it's kind of a vibe
Great album! Couple of absolute bangers.
Hmm, ok. I could listen again but not gonna rush to get it on my playlist.
29th September 2023 Definitely the dates are out here, but listened to this around the 2nd October after the head wetting. Not what you’d except from Primal Scream, experimental with hints of Talking Heads.
Big wafty drug fest. Was enjoying it then got a bit bored.
I was heading towards a 4 because the longer songs on the front half of the album kept my attention pretty well, or they were just danceable that I didn't notice the length. Some of the later tracks do have a length issue though, they just don't keep my attention enough. But overall this album is an interesting mix of indie and dance, songs like Slip Inside This House are just so funky I can't help but groove to it.
This album has always intrigued me, although it's been a while since I listened. Its schizoid in the sense of having several genres bumping against one another, which can be fun, but the blending between them leaves sometime to be desired. It's quite funny the suddenness of the realization that, no this isn't a contemporary take on classic psych rock with soul and gospel influence that you find so much of in the countercultural era (think funkadelic a clear influence on the opening track) but that this is in fact more of a triphop or even trance esq project at it's core. Unfortunately even with all of the sonic exploration, about half of the tracks are honestly just mid, which is a shame because there's at least two that are bonidied 5/5s for me. I guess my opinion hasn't changed much over the years in this one, it's interesting and worth a listen but I'll probably find myself returning mostly to just a few select cuts. Rating: 3/5 FAVS: Movin On Up, Come Together, Loaded
Very solid album. 3.5
Goed te hebben hoor. Ik zal wel de enige zijn, maar ik moest bij die stem soms denken aan Billy Corgan.
Cool Indie rock/dance mix. A new fantastic thing when it came out, but not that magic any longer
I'd always assumed from the name that Primal Scream were a metal band, so never chose to listen to them This is much easier to listen to than that, a nice mix of rock and dance mostly led by the dance beats, often drifting into psychedelia as per the title. The dance/psychedelia bits work much better for me than the more guitar-led sections, which feel a bit overproduced (Damaged could quite easily be an album track on Be Here Now, the album where Oasis went wrong). Album as a whole suffers from that a little, plus again quite a few of the tracks are just too long for my tastes (given they're repeating the same beats over and over). 3/5.
I liked this more than I expected to. I preferred the songs that lean more toward power pop rock vs. club music. Favorites were Movin' on Up, Damaged and loaded. A couple of more tracks like those would have pushed up the score. Would like to give it a 3.5.
This was a pretty cool fusion of dance music and rock and roll. While this was far from the most exciting album I've ever heard (I could not really maintain my focus on it while listening) it had some very cool moments. The audacity of naming a song "Come Together" aside, that one had great dynamics and background vocals, and "Damaged" was a musical twist, sounding like it came off of a seventies Stones album, in the context of this album. I was not moved by this in any way, but it was interesting. I'm not sure how much of an "album" this is. The songs are pretty varied in their sound but at no point did I feel that the variety was too jarring. This felt more like an expertly curated sound collage.
какое обманчивое название. особо не запомнила, только что очень длинно
Album 97 of 1001 Screamadelica - Primal Scream Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Loaded Previously unfamiliar with this Scottish rock band. Listened as I waited on my car to be serviced and was a fine way to pass the time. Good songs. Nothing with too cute melodies that you would sing along to, but a fine album indeed.
3.5
Without the aid of pills or a dance club, Screamadelica was a energized and upbeat dance party that was better than expected. It started strong, with a surprisingly diverse collection of songs that kept me interested, but then it felt overly long with extended tracks that went on and on. It's hard to keep the energy up, but overall it was fun, without having to leave the comfort of my home.
A nice throwback to late 70s psychedelic.
It's interesting how it rocks while emanating such energy and groove of electronic dance music. This is the most '90s album that I have heard for a while.
Probably would have enjoyed this more if I was Higher Than the Sun while listening
i was expecting this to sound totally different based on the genre, album title, name of the band, everything, but it was actually really nice! i loved 'Inner Flight' and really like Come Together.
this wasn’t really my thing, but i can certainly see the appeal of it.
Each song was a surprise. Unexpected and sometimes spacey, but in a good way. Could see this as exercising background music.
A kaleidoscopic mélange of everything going at the time: house music, ‘60s revivalism, gospel inflections. The singles are good but it never quite clicks as a whole, but those highs are extremely high.
It's not really my era - I feel as though people a couple of years older than me will love this album. It misses the mark with me - too much weird 90s style gentle dance music/ambience. Lots of gospel. The hits are good, obviously, but his voice is annoying after a while. I probably wouldn't listen again.
That had some nice sound. Nothing I found groundbreaking. Might put it on, probably not.
I like all the songs but find them all to be too long.
Dachte erst "Wasn das fürn Dance Shit". Hat sich aber ab dem 2. mal Hören gut entwickelt. 3.4
Not for me
3/11, 27%
Hmm Primal Scream aren't they techno? HAHA NOPE, they sound a bit like Rolling Stones honestly. Rock. Kinda cool. it's a 90 min album. So Primal Scream did do a song on the Trainspotting soundtrack. That song is def more techno than this album. But pretty cool so far! I'm really digging this journey to 1001 albums. A few of the tracks were not available on Spotify :/
Jeps
Had a Big Audio Dynamite vibe. Satisfying listen
Good
Really weird album with a bunch of different things, but overall I enjoyed a decent amount of it.
Holy cow, that was one wild ride. It's like Primal Scream threw a bunch of different genres into a blender, hit puree, and then just went with whatever came out. The album starts off with "Movin' on Up," and I gotta say, I was movin' on up out of my seat trying to figure out what the heck was going on. "Loaded" is like a rollercoaster of sound, complete with a funky bassline and a choir that sounds like it's on a mission from God. But it's "Higher Than the Sun" that really takes the cake. I mean, what kind of drugs were they on when they made that song? It's like they took a bunch of helium, inhaled it, and then decided to sing about being higher than the sun. I don't know what they were smoking, but I want some. Overall, Screamadelica is a trip, and not the kind you take with your grandma to the Grand Canyon. If you're feeling adventurous, give it a listen. And if you're not feeling adventurous, well, stick with elevator music.
Odd but some good stuff
good but not that good, makes me miss the early 90s though, in retro what a time to be alive
I can't stand Bobby Gillespie, but think Andrew Weatherall is a genius. So I'm conflicted! The good news is, a couple of plodding Stones rip offs aside, it's pretty much all Weatherall, blessed out, dubby fun. It's just a shame Gillespie gets so much credit when, whenever he's left to his own devices, he turds out the blandest rawk ever. His only real talent is he is smart enough to shut up when a real grown up enters the room. So - any time the frontman is in the background this is a five star album. If only they'd sacked the idiot, Primal Scream could have been one of the greatest bands ever!
Surprising and decent but not life-changing I don't know if I'll revisit.
Wasn’t able to give this a full listen. But long songs with lots of instruments and random noises is always right up my alley. Slip Inside This House a really cool track.
The first song I had discovered couple of years ago and subsequently put it on other playlists. It sounds “not of” 1991 but the rest of the tracks do as Slip Inside This House starts up with the drum machine loops. Boom, it’s summertime, you’re playing Sega Genesis in your parents basement. Streets of Rage II. Why does the album open with a gospel song and then the rest is club Jamz dancemix ‘91? There are some tracks where the band finally does Come Together and there is a bit more uplifting music with singing and choir. Loaded is a pretty fun instrumental. You could probably put this album on as background music at a party if you didn’t want anyone to be distracted from conversation. Damaged is a straight up country song. Lots of musical range here and it kind of reminds me of MGMT a bit. I wonder if that band listened to Primal Screamadelica? I guess the album has some bookend songs such as the opener and I’m Comin’ Down. The songs between are a bit of a trip and I guess that’s the idea!
I take MDMA every Monday, so I had a lovely time listening to this record. It seems like that may be a prerequisite for listening to this bad boy. This album is perfect for eerily batting around a single swinging lightbulb in a dark basement, or any repetitive task like that. I actually like house music, so I didn’t mind the extended tracks. I stopped fighting it and just felt it. However, these tracks only hit in a specific time and place, and I wouldn’t necessarily listen to these guys on the regular, especially considering I just found out they existed. I got some serious NIN vibes in the Higher Than The Sun mixes, which were my favourites on the record. However, Trent Reznor is way cooler than this and does it better. I’ll give the Screamos credit though because they may be on the cutting edge of what’s to come. There were Fatboy Slim and Oasis vibes in a few songs as this was at a time before those acts existed in the mainstream. This album is Loaded with different feels and weird sounds, which is fascinating to listening to. An array of genres taking (inner) flight all over the place, including the aforementioned house music, Brit rock, piano ballads, and more. This album has no cohesion at all, but who cares? This is a music album not a corporate management retreat.
It’s all about the singles, the rest of the album was good but not stand-out
Enjoyed some of it.
A rich cacophony of styles and sounds, new to me, look forward to revisiting.
Not my cup of tea. Seemed like a generic 90's album to me with a lot of repetitive elements. Not bad, but not great either, but again, maybe I'm just not the demographic.
So deep in genres. Lots of unique sounds.
Good old disco vibes, but not my Kind of Party music sadly
Not bad, but extremely overrated. Most of it is not memorable at all and many songs are stuck so hard in the 90's it hurts. It is also not focused at all, which can get annoying pretty fast in a long album lie this. 6/10
Weirdly modern
To me this is sort of ok, don't remember much of it but wasn't bothered by it so most probably won't listen to it again but won't complain if someone else puts it on
Bit too long, bit too unremarkable but not too bad.
Love the two songs I allready knew (Movin' on Up and Loaded). The rest is decent but not too memorable
Just not all that, at least not anymore, and as far as one’s concerned, they never really were.. Any euphoria that’s felt feels too cheaply earned. One always found PS to be much tamer compared to the edgier, darker, druggier Happy Mondays, nor as expansive as Spiritualized and not as flat-out weird and cultish as, say, Polyphonic Spree. The slower, dreamier cuts (the best of which is “I’m Coming Down”) are not uninteresting, but they do feel a little insubstantial. The record is alternately too silly-happy and too noodly-contemplative. “Come Together” is pretty weak tea as a peace-and-love anthem, but “Loaded” and “Damaged” are decent. The whole thing – the faux gospel choir, the stupid “We wanna get loaded and have a good time” Peter Fonda clip, the arty pretensions, the thin and now hollow-sounding production (which, oddly, hasn’t held up so well, given it’s basically a producers’ record) – reads as unconvincing.Today, this sounds like mid-list commercial pop-rock from an era in transition, with much genre conflict, and anyway isn’t nearly as experimental and lysergic as it wants to be.
Nobody was screaming.
Better than expected, nice and pleasant
Mid
Pretty original but I'm not very into it, dunno why.
I mean it’s fine.I really liked one song but even that song was way too long which seems to be a running theme throughout the whole album. Also for a band named primal scream I expected heavier music. maybe it would work better on a club.
Some 'bangers', to use the terminology of the time, and a lot of drug addled filler. Pleasant mix of gospel, guitar rock and trippy sampling. Drags on a bit.
Wierd but nice album
My expectations were pretty damn low for an album titled 'Screamadelica,' so there was no other option than to be pleasantly surprised. I thought this was going to be hard-core, screaming metal, but it was a nice psychedelic trip instead. Meandered a bit too long in the middle and failed to draw any emotion. Overall, it wasn't revolutionary for me, but it wasn't offensive. Quintessential 3/5.
You know, after the name of the artist and the album itself, not to mention the slightly off-putting album cover, I was expecting a much more hard to listen to album than the one I got. This was a pretty joyful album all things considered, and while a lot of it was background noise, it was pretty enjoyable music. Perhaps this is heightened musically on something like LSD, but it's still pretty nice without it. Nothing amazing, and a lot of it forgettable, but I don't regret listening. I suppose just throw it in with other 90's electronica.
À quoi bon finalement
Favourite song: Higher than the Sun
Certainly an influential album, Screamadelica brought the Alternative Rock and mixed it with Acid House and Techno. In what can be describedas a "vibe" for its era as a drug album, we can see it's impact on the era. What it lacks in depth, it makes up for in general swagger and what it meant for bringing dance music of the early 90s to a wider audience.
Very groovy and catchy sometimes Don’t like it’s acoustic mixes such as “I’m comin down” Sounds like LSD, like this trippy vibe
not bad, but too long and I got bored.
2.7, it was fine
OK - but pretty overrated. I recall 'Loaded' from back in the day.
This is an album that hasn't aged particularly well because it came out before a bunch of advances in electronic music equipment and technique were pioneered. However, I'm sure that this was a really cool album at the time, especially since it was coming from an indie rock band that was abandoning its roots to explore electronic music. Overall it's a fun dance album. It can be a bit repetitive, but they were dealing with some technological limitations on that end. Integrating electronica into rock has become much less of a feat for an indie band than it was 30 years ago. 3/5 still worth a listen, but it sounds really dated now
Where's my dub :(
Some really interesting tunes. I particularly liked 'Slip inside this house'. Overall, a bit too weak for four stars, though.
I expected more screaming.
I've been pretty down on the other Primal Scream entries, primarily because the name sets me up to expect something that isn't what the band delivers. This was great though. The songs and performances worked for me.
