Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Lots of bangers. -1 for rap rock.
Fun listen, I enjoy the cover art. A fun album, lots of variety.
Beck is crazy talented and on Odelay he uses every trick from the Beck handbook. Twice. It’s fun - and it’s also somehow too Beck-ish.
I liked it, had heard the name but not the music
Yep
A fairly good album, I liked Ramshackle, Minus and Sissyneck.
A bit whimsical but overall good.
Okay...I think I've heard one song from Beck so I'm intrigued. Their songs are catchy. I'll give 'em that. 3/5 I got bored pretty quickly.
Yes. Enjoyed this !
Some interesting tracks and wide variety of styles. Good production. Nothing stood out and made me go wow. Never heard of it, no idea it received widespread critical acclaim at the time.
Nothing great, nothing bad. High 5 was a slick beat though. This feels like 2.5 to 3.5 star territory to me, depending upon the conditions of the day and listening circumstances.
Struggling a bit with this one. I feel like it's objectively good, and I appreciate much of it...but I don't think I would ever choose to listen to this again. It's somehow good without being enjoyable to me. Usually in this case I'll think "yeah, I recognize that people who like this kind of music would like it, but I personally don't like this kind of music." In this case, I think I generally *do* like this kind of music, but I just couldn't get into this album. It definitely gets bonus points for having a komondor on the album cover as those are the most ridiculous-looking-while-still-naturally-occurring dogs on the planet. So there's that.
Relatively enjoyable overall. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it feels like the only criteria for this list is being musically ambitious with lyrics and vocals falling by the wayside. This album accomplished that better than some.
Second listen after years of not even hearing or caring about Beck, this album is pretty good. Not great, but good
These dudes were so fucking high
Interesting album, it blended a variety of elements from different genres. It reminded me of beastie boys and red hot chilli peppers.
Odelay is the fifth album by American musician, singer, song-writer Beck. It is an experimental alternative/folk rock album that became - and remains - Beck's most successful album. Critically acclaimed, Odelay was present on many "Best of" lists for 1996, 1997, 1998, and even as recently as polls for 2005, 2013, and 2020. Odelay won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1997 as well as a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "Where It's At". This album has been certified gold in Australia, platinum in Japan, New Zealand, & the UK, and double platinum in Canada & the US. Beck's Odelay was an interesting gem to listen to. There's many different music genres across the album's songs, so there's something for everyone. It was a fun and upbeat album that made listening to it easy. Most people should enjoy this album.
Some cool sounds. I find it creative, and a couple of the songs I did like. However, overall it was not the kind of music I’ll go back to, or listen again from start to end. An interesting listen overall.
Interesting mish-mash of styles switching from 60s west coast garage psychedelia to grungy hipster hip-hop with weird sound effects, slide guitars and record scratches. OK, I guess, but it didn’t really grab me.
I'm not a huge fan of Beck; it's kind of lay-back music is a bit too lay back for me... and in many cases he seems as bored as I could be will singing. Trying to get past this, the album is actually pretty good, the way songs are built with samples and instruments is nice and the most dynamic songs even caught me shaking my head. So yeah, still not a huge fan, but not that bad.
Some of this album is genuinely ok, the rest is obnoxious and overuses odd noises.
Forgot how much I love Jack Ass. Not my favorite Beck album
Nice to get a Beck album.
'What the fuck is this ridiculous devil's haircut bullshit?!' 'Oh, mate - wait until you get the bit about having a cigarette on each arm and a carburetor tied to the moon. I must have been so fuckin' high when that came out of me!' This album is as 90s as tamagotchis, OJs tiny glove, and Mr Fucking Blobby (which is his legal first name).
tiene buenos temas, pero no todo el álbum es bueno en su forma completa.
some good weird shit that i vibed with at times. jack ass is a dope song.
Good album. First time listened form start to finish. Lots of good, known songs on this one. And the not-so-know stuff is fun to listen to as well.
I thought Loser was on this one and was kind of bummed when it never came on. I listened on my morning commute. I enjoyed most songs, but not one of my favorite styles. Reminds me of going through my uncle's CD collection.
Some of the songs are ok. A bit weird... 90's funk is funky and weird.
Beck is okay. I liked some of his songs and they were different. Won’t listen to him on my own time though. 5/10
Didn’t really get much from this one. 5/10
Beck Beck Beck, Beck is weird. Beck has always been one of those names that I know pretty much all his big hits but have never sought out full albums. I don’t even know what genre you would put this in, rock? Folk? Country Punk? Some of the songs are pretty experimental in their sound, almost to much so. The hits are bangers and are very apparent when compared to the rest of the album. Over all an interesting listen but not something I will seek out again. 5/10
<img src="https://tenor.com/view/forgot-no-memories-lord-of-the-rings-lotr-gandalf-gif-13463504" alt="Gandalf says 'I have no memory of this place...'"> "I have no memory of this place..." Well, except "Where It's At." I was thirteen in 1996 and had my own little Walkman. I listened to the radio plenty, but the only song from Beck I recognize is "Where It's At," though some of the others feel slightly familiar. It's decent background rock, but nothing other than that song stands out. It's not bad, but it's not excellent either. That's the problem with hearing experimental rock nearly three (wtf.) decades later: stuff that was avant-garde and bleeding edge at the time has now been incorporated into the main flow of music unless it's really outre. Might have blown my mind *then* but it doesn't now.
Not my jam
Love it
love the later stuff, this one is .. no good
Didn’t dislike but struggled to pay it much attention
Really weird and eclectic. Can't remember it that well but was an interesting listen
I like the experimentation, but sometimes it goes a bit too far and doesn't work.
Fun but felt 1 dimensional by the end.
It's ok
Interesting album. Rock with some hip hop vibes in terms of sampling and almost spoken word in some points. Some songs bordered on grungey metal, others were almost trip hoppy. Good drum breaks throughout.
It was kind of a mix of everything. Jazz, hiphop, rock, electronica. Pretty cool all around. Saved some songs from the album. Loved devil's haircut.
I haven’t listened to this album in a very long time. I never really liked Beck that much when he first came out and listening to this album again reminded me that I still don’t like him that much. Some of his songs are kind of fun, but they all start sounding the same after awhile.
Not my cup of tea.
The mish mash was interesting, pretty ambitious album overall but I think it was pretty effective. Probably liked this more artistically than musically. Most songs had something I liked but also something I didn’t. Felt like an album of moments. Didn’t like his voice on most of it. Decent 6
Pedestrian
Not bad, reminded me of the Fight Club soundtrack
naja - ok
Experimental bordering on annoying. That being said, it's a really fun album. The creative usage of objects and instruments to make odd noises is more entertaining than not. Most of the tracks on this album are super laid back and chill, with simple percussion nudging the tempo forward. Not sure if I'd listen to this again soon, but definitely again someday.
I have to avoid writing "classic" in each and every review. This one surely is in the realm of the 90ies Indie music. It's a solid album, has its place in musical history, but for me personally, Beck always was too experimental, inconsistant, and not enough mainstream to really, really like him. Kind of like what Prince was for R&B, he did for alternative music.
Aah, the Beck I know and love. Doesn't always work but mostly does so I'm happy with that.
3.5
weird interesting pile of garbage
Einige Lieder finde ich richtig gut, andere nicht.
I actually really enjoyed the early 2000s musk that this albums creates- it's such an interesting approach on a mesh of genre. Definitely going to listen to more of their discography :)
leuke cover
Liked it yeah
Beck was always a mistery to me...
A classic Beck album. Not my favourite, but a good album showcasing Beck's skill as a musician
Beck bra ju oväntat bra Jag har alltid gillat stökig musik Sista låten var grym Diskobox Några svaga låtar men stark 3a blir det
Reminds me of high school. Lots of samples, scratches, and fuzzed out guitar. Catchy pop lyrics.
Great nineties throwback, Beck's called styles always keep things interesting
I didn’t mind this. An interesting hip hop rock fusion. Worth a listen. 3.5 stars
Okay Beck. I like some later stuff. Ramona is top notch.
This was a tough one for me. I really liked this album when it was released, then I soured on Beck, and now, I can't really listen objectively. I liked a lot of what I heard, and though it doesn't sound nearly as fresh as it did upon release, there's a lot of cool stuff going on. But listening to the lyrics, I couldn't help think it was a bunch of nonsense. Back in the day it seemed offbeat and funky, now it sounds like refrigerator magnet poetry. So, am I just being a little bitch? Possibly. But I was lukewarm throughout this listen, so Beck and his Scientology friends can go dance in the desert without me.
This seemed really exciting at the time. But there's a reason I haven't spun this in nearly 30 years: it's too much style over substance. he is a good songwriter, but he didn't step up to the plate on this one. His next one, Mutations, is fantastic, though.
Beck could use a Red Bull.
tügel ihm de sini hoore. seeeeehr geili drums. hotwax. slidey boy. clavinet boy. geil. oke isch chli viel aber funny. lord obly knows. guete soong. new pollution plätscheret bitz aber cooli bassline. derelict. s ganze isch dehr srgt pepper. drumbreak geeeil. er het uf dem dong delber trömmelet wow. novacane hässsig. denn mega ruhig voll schön. scratches meh. jack-ass. döt machter sin laid back gsang findi geil. where it's at. mega geils rhodes. minus. seehr cool. sissyneck. JA PEDAL STEEL JA. findi de vest bis etz. drums immerno geil, mega minimalistisch. readymade. sehr "ich spiel etz e nöd westlichi tonleitere" musig. high 5. okay voll hiphop beat. ui was isch de klassischi shit dezwüsched? aah schwanensee glaub. isch sehr hip hop, find s verlürt sich irgendwenn. ramshackle. schöööne text. schöni gitarre. sehr nice.
fav songs: devils haircut, hotwax, jack ass, minus i like this vibe of rock don’t know how much id replay though
An album that I listened to
I like a lot of Beck stuff but the gimmick does get a bit stale.
Some decent tunes on there I remember being miffed that I couldn't copy it in 1999. Didn't miss loads
pretty good
Fun listen, I can see why it made waves in the 90s. Favorite song: Devils Haircut Least favorite: Where It’s At
Pretty neutral towards him and my opinion remains unchanged
Når det er godt er det VIRKELIG godt, men en del mere rodet end jeg huskede
Det må siges at være eksperimenterende.. Er ikke med på alle sange og det virker lidt usammenhængende, udover at det hele er lidt skørt!
Goes on too long. Wears out by the end
Nice and original, and definitely one of Beck's best. Yet it's rare for Beck's music to truly move me.
Beck's slack pop vibe has aged well. Devils Haircut is a solid opener and I find myself enjoying the rest even where its a bit uneven. The things that can make a Beck song uneven can be distilled down to simply saying when he goes too far i.e. the parts where he's too country, the parts where he's too rap, the parts where he's too cute or too funny. As you can see, it's all a judgement call. I acknowledge it's all totally subjective but what I'm trying to highlight here is that, in my mind when it comes to Beck, the unevenness is less about the craft of songwriting and more about excesses in presentation or style.
3-3.5 This album felt longer than 52 minutes (and not really in a good way). I liked Beck’s experimentation, and for 1996 I feel like it was probably very unique, and even at first I thought the album was younger than it was. That being said, the album didn’t feel very cohesive, and I think Beck leaned too much into an idea of idiosyncrasy being a random sound bite thrown in. It got old quickly. However, the changed within rhythm were cool, like when the song felt like it would do a 180 in terms of genre and/or tempo. I’m also not a huge fan of Beck’s voice (I think 9 times out of ten he sounds incredibly bored) but I do think he’s a talented magician and the bored voice works sometimes. Also, I was really interested in the album in the first half but the last half kinda lost me. Nonetheless, I liked how unique it was, I just wish it didn’t fall on this trope of “ah! Bet ya didn’t expect this random quirky thing,” and was slimmed down by a few songs.
I know everyone loves this album. I think it’s just alright.
Made the mistake of starting this album at 4am. A little too rambunctious for that early. I remember WHERE ITS AT from this album.
I like Beck, but this wasn’t my favorite album of his.
ah yeah not bad cool genre blend
Unique
I feel like you would feel like the coolest white guy in the world listening to this in the 90's, but iunno about now. Def a well-made album and has songs, but it feels a lil dated and empty to me now. Maybe I'm just in a mood. Not tryna to be a hater.
I've heard his name before but couldn't have picked out a song of his. I really like this album. There's a lot of variety. It's full of energy and fun. I like Devil's Haircut, Lord Only Knows, Novacane, and Sissyneck. It's at least a 6/10 for me. It might be a little long, and its, like MOST OF THESE, not really a genre I enjoy, I guess.
Good album. Not my favorite Beck. Has some real highs but some tracks I'm not crazy about.
i normally love all sorts of "weird" music and sampling but for some reason beck never really clicked for me (beyond "loser" anyway). something about the composition just feels so haphazard and either meaningless or like I'm too stupid to understand what he's trying to accomplish. either way, doesn't feel great. i do like the way beck careens into different genres left and right, even on the same track. still, i came into this only really knowing the two big singles and left the same way. i'd give this 3.5 stars if i could just because i like a lot of what it's doing but realistically I'm not sure how often I'll be coming back to these deeper cuts. favorites: devils haircut, where it's at
This album has some great songs but also so many terrible songs or parts to songs. Sometimes it sounds like they forgot how to play a certain instrument and let them parts ruin otherwise good songs. Somewhat reminds me of the Backstreet boys but better music out there for sure.
🐄🔔🖍️
Beck may be one of the most unique artists I have heard, just so many noises. All I can think of is the Futurama episode where Bender gets cut open by the industrial can opener and becomes paralyzed. But Beck lets him join him on stage so that he can be used as a washboard in his band to play Where It's At. This certainly teeters on the edge of being overwhelming with noise and actually being music. But I would say that this is actual enjoyable music that he is able to make.
Very eclectic in genres but somehow it all fits together.
Een beetje heftig soms maar overall goeie muziek om mee te werken
Mostly great songs! Novacane is by far the worst on the album, but otherwise enjoyed this one.
DECENT
Some good stuff, some boring stuff. Album could be great if it was a few songs shorter.
Nice
This is the higher end of a three.
Realno 3,5 al ne mogu dat to, a nije za 4. Beck dobar čovjek.
It's Beck. He does whatever he wants. Some of it's great, most of it just exists. Usually I like the first half of an album better and lose interest after a while. On this record I like the second half better. Favorite song: Minus.
I was excited to give this a listen for the first time in 20 years, but it kind of fell flat for me.
I’ve got a devil’s haircut in my mind. All very simplistic but catchy. I can’t barely play any instrument, but I think I could replicate this album on my own. Novacane slaps. This is a very 90’s album. Several songs contains twangy country steel guitar, and will mix it with samples of rap. Not my favorite, but it works.
Funky and wacky sounds. Prefer it over the previous Beck album yesterday (Sea Change).
not great but it was cool every once in a while so a low three makes sense
Great production, boring melodies, confusing album. No standout track.
3.5
Two turntables and a microphone song from like the 90s. Other than that it's ok... they were high making this
Enjoyably weird 3.5
Good but not music genre that I would not normally listen to.
Not as good as I remember it being. Still a few songs that I really love on here, but the rest are pretty forgettable.
It's like they took a good alternative album and just put random noises in random spots. There was weird ass synth, some squealy guitars, and some beeping(?) Wasn't a bad listen but it did at times feel like it was trying to be different just to be different
* lord only knows is pretty good * jack-ass is good too!
particolare, non male
Eccentric and eclectic. There’s no one else I’ve heard like Beck and I appreciate his genre bending approach, but I don’t need to listen to it every day!
Not a patch on guero
I've always had a complicated relationship with Beck. He seems like exactly the type of artist I would love, and I've tried to get into his music, but it has never quite stuck with me. Odelay, maybe his most critically acclaimed record, is no exception. The biggest singles, "Devils Haircut" and "Where It's At", are fine, but have always seemed extremely repetitive to me. The rest of the album just rolls off my brain like water off a duck's back, even after multiple listens. I never find it bad or unenjoyable. It's just so...fine. There's a lot of musical experimentation here, which I can appreciate, but things like the electronic elements he often incorporates just isn't my taste. Overall, it sounds like an artist doing a lot, without any of it fully working.
Mmm, paar vette nummers, veel filler.
Good
I enjoyed it.
not my thing- the sirens annoyed me
This isn’t as good as some other beck albums but he does do a good job of making some amazingly unique music. This is some funky alternative with an array of sounds. Most of the songs are still catchy and enjoyable. This album is good but not near his best. 6.5/10
I'm generally a Beck fan. The album I listen to the most is probably Mutations. Odelay is more straightforward than some of his other work, with typical backbeats and less layered instruments. It's fine but I like other Beck records more.
One word: eclectic. Lots of different genres packed into one album, and while musically it’s diverse, I find that it’s hard to settle in. Still a solid album though. Fav song of the album is either Hotwax or Where It’s At
Not my favorite
not bad. didn't rly do anything for me but i can appreciate the artistry
Was dreading this but it was ok. Just ok.
Had a lot of really interesting sounds, and was really cool to listen to. Not something I would listen to normally though.
buen disco
3.5, where it’s at and sissyneck are very strong tracks but think some other ones try for abit of an experimental rock and don’t get it exactly right.
6/10
Nice to listen to, but nothing really grabs me. But what I can say is that I like his screams on this album. It has a mix of screamed vocals, ballads, dub, his typical guitar sound. + Derelict + Readymade + Ramshackle + Diskobox
Not bad! Quite eclectic. Some bits give me Eels vibes.
Interplay between the samply motifs of the guitar and the oscillating energy levels makes for an interesting listen. Has a country feel to it.
6/15

Do I hate it?? no.... but I definitely don't love it Favorite Track: Lord Only Knows 3/5
Pretty decent album. I like the general vibe but not really getting into the songs too much.
This was a bizarre experience. Second Beck album already and I was like eh...but this was quite fun. Some real contrasts. Got a couple of nice tracks for my playlists.
It's fine. Not eye opening. Fine.
Someone listened to the Beasty Boys
Intriguing at times. Overstimulating at times.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - The New Pollution (4) 2 - Jack-Ass (7) 3 - Where It's At (8)
I really like Where It's At. I sort of like some of the other songs. I really don't like some of the songs. I rate this a balanced 2.5 rounding up for the album art. I do think this album belongs on this list and I'm more or less happy to have heard it.
Love the singles but I prefer his more reflective / dour stuff to disco cowboy Beck.
Cool album.
3/5 Interesting. A bit uneven, but totally radical at the time it was released.
Not really my style but it wasn’t bad
Really forgettable: Didn't enjoy a lot of the tracks and especially towards the end it started to lose my interest and sound very samey
3-4
No es el disco que más me gusta de Beck pero está bien
Very, very good! Deserves more than 3 stars but not quite 4. So many sounds pulling together. I really enjoyed it.
No one ever said that Beck didn’t take chances and make some unique music. Some of it sticks, some of it falls short. Yet I’ve never met anyone who told me that Beck is their favorite. Sad thing is that many people seem to love DMB to no end, but I can’t understand why Becks uniqueness doesn’t draw a similar cult following. Some things just don’t make sense, but what makes sense is that Beck makes very interesting music. If it were 4 songs on this album and some decent accompanying tracks I may keep this is rotation, but it just doesn’t have unanimous draw.
Gruizige americana vol met samples en gekke beatjes. Beastie Boys meets Cake. Het kan aan mij liggen, maar het klinkt wel enorm 90s. Het is wel ok, maar niet helemaal mijn stijl. Gewoon 3 sterretjes.
Honestly overrated.
The way I feel about this album, is the way I feel about all but one Beck album. Meh, it’s fine.
I’ve always liked Beck, I think He has bangers on all albums but this album is not my favorite. My favorite is Guero by far. Almost every song on that album is awesome my favorite being Earthquake Weather. I know this is supposed to be a review for Odelay haha but I think the wrong album was picked.
Oh lord. I know this whole album, but that doesn’t mean it deserves to be on this list. It’s fine. So far most of the albums are “just fine” and I don’t know how I feel about that.
I think Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk ruined Beck for me. It’s background music! He uses really interesting sounds and cool beats, but his music too easily slips behind anything else going on.
I think I liked this album more in the '90s. Good background sound. Around track 6 I wanted something different.
Needs another listen to properly form an opinion, but I did enjoy it
Pollock: Excited about this. Devils haircut is Ok. Honestly not loving it right now. A bit too almost punky, 90s rocky. Discobox surprised me that's for sure. IDK, this somehow has me interested in Becks music but not that into this album. Could be one of those tricky mutliple listen scenarios, but it has to be a 3 max. Probably a low 3. Best: Discobox Worst: Overall: Yeah just didn't speak to my ear aesthetic. I can sense that I will like a Beck album, very unique. So its a low 3, but has potential
Gostei médio
Beck is a vibe, and always inventive.
Beck to this day is probably the best at sounding like Beck. His quirky compositions, quasi-pointless lyrics, to the way he sings, all are token Beck. If a listener likes that, they will never be disappointed, and if a listener does not, they will likely never change their mind, regardless of the album.
This album is odd. I’m a bit concerned that it’s only on the list due to Chemical Brothers production because I’d like to have an excuse to listen to other Beck albums that I think I’d like better. 6/10
Opzich best prima, maar kon nou niet echt opmaken naar wat voor genre ik aan het luisteren was waardoor ik er niet echt aan kon wennen. Maar misschien nog een keer luisteren dus!! Eigenlijk 2,8
quintessential late 90's/early 00's alt sound
A lot of this is great, but too much "what's this button do" means 3 is where it's at.
I do not know what to say about this album. It was quite an experience. 5/10
Beck isn’t my usual style but I do rly like this album. Some of the songs are just up my alley while others aren’t that appealing. I like the uniqueness of it the different sounds and instruments.
Enjoyed most of this, definitely a weird and eclectic mix
What a cool lil guy
Devils Haircut - 7/10 -- Decent Song to open Hotwax - 5/10 Lord Only Knows - 6/10 The New Pollution - 6/10 Derelict - 6/10 Novecane - 3/10 -- Bad Song Jackass - 8/10 -- Nice on ears Where's it at - 6/10 -- Doesn't need to be 5 minutes. Minus - 5/10 -- It's alright Sissyneck - 6/10 Readymade - 8/10 -- My favorite High 5 - 2/10 -- I hate this song Ramshackle - 6/10 -- The melody is nice Overall : 5.5/10 Not my favorite at all. Not my taste but some songs are actually good.
Not my thing
- Funny breaks - Funny country voice - Fun - Solid start, mid end - 7/10
Não deixa de ser uma experiência relevante, especialmente pelo uso de samplers de forma inteligente. Porém, pela duração acaba sendo cansativo. Dispenso pelo menos umas seis músicas.
mixed bag -can't say I really enjoyed it
Good
J’aurais donné 3,5. J’aime la groove, j’aime le travail d’échantillonnage, j’aime tous les singles. Mais dans l’ensemble les autres pièces ressortaient moins, retenaient moins mon attention
Albeit a bit weird at times, it's not made in an unpleasant way and sounds quite good overall. I'll admit I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics though, so have little to no idea on the thematic aspect of this album.
estilo bem peculiar, mas nao muito empolgante
This brings back a lot of memories. I've always loved Beck. Though this album was never a favorite of mine. Some songs make my skin crawl for some reason.
nice departure from usual genres that I listen to. noisy saturated sounds are a little bit grating.
A few bleeps here, a few bloops there, a hip hop drum beat, some random glitchy noises. Does not make an album. Beck is a goddamn legend and a chameleon, but the hype around this album is baffling to me.
A lot of effects, Nice but it's si much...
Beck seems like a fun guy, and this was an enjoyable album, I even possibly caught a sample of Candy Shop on one of the tracks. But overall, nothing to write home about. The album cover is creepy and cool at the same time, that dog is wild.
Mikkel Venge Beck (born 12 May 1973) is a Danish former professional football who played as a forward. He scored three goals in 19 games for the Denmark national team, and represented Denmark at the international Euro 1996 and Euro 2000 tournaments.
Sort of like a respectable Kid Rock. Some standout tracks for sure, "Novacane" in particular really rips, and "Devils Haircut" holds up, but the weirdness leads to some meandering for sure.
Influences that seemed apparent were The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and 90s Hip-Hop, especially A Tribe Called Quest. Some of the computer/electronic sounds he experimented with were difficult to listen to, but did enjoy the general ambiance. Feels very “of its time”.
Easy to listen to.
good it’s a mix of country nu metal and rock🤔weird combo
Ekki besta plata Beck.
I always want to like Beck more than I wind up liking Beck when I listen.
I don’t get the Beck hype. Is this sound unique? Yes. Is it catchy? At times, yes, but also repetitive. Are there incongruous sounds stitched together in some sort of I’m-on-a-different-level-than-everyone-else vibe? Yes Does that aspect remind me somewhat of improvisational jazz? Unfortunately, yes. Is Derelict a derelict song? Yes. Is this album something special? Eh, not to me.
I enjoyed this album. I didn't love it, but I enjoyed it.
This was weird, I thought it was going to be a good weird at first, but then it started throwing in random clicks and beeps which made me think there was a error with my car...odd has great elements but to much randomness
3.5 for me, fun and total nonsense
3 great songs, not crazy about the rest
Runs the gamut from "fantastic" to "filler." Some of it is key tracks of the 90s. Some of it is bloated nonsense. On the whole a solid album, probably overrated.
Was a time in the 90s when you could make a career out of this sort of jokey alt-rock, and even get a bit of mainstream play as well. The Butthole Surfers, Cake, this guy etc. Nothing truly bad going on, but also nothing I could ever call essential in any way. Still, compared to the shit that fills the top 50 atm this is high art. 3/5.
Cool and interesting but probably won’t go back again
An inspired melange but a melange nonetheless, with more than a little overreaching. One wonders if Beck is motivated more by boredom (just to see what works and what he can get away with) or ambition (to be all things to all types of listeners or to provide some form of universalist Rosetta Stone of slacker fin de siecle music). The synthesizing creaks obviously in places — the inert mingling of a tepid Schubert passage (“Unfinished Symphony”) with some middling hip-hop beats. The bits of mid-‘70s Stones and funk sound fine, if toothless, landing as little more than noodling or homage-y nods. The faux-Beastie Boys riffs and cuts sound on-point but fall short of the actual, you know, Beastie Boys. “Jack-Ass” sounds tired, much more lethargic than one recalls – with the backing track outright stolen from Them. One can’t help but think “dilettante” as much as “genius” and also about the originality of such assemblage and whether Beck woulda been better served (and served his listeners better) by just playing it straight, or at least occasionally straighter.
Staan wel een paar leuke dingen op, maar het is toch te wisselvallig.
Enjoyed it! Went a bit mad in parts but still some good tunes
Meh was ok, bit too much electro experimental stuff that he made weird
199-whenever: huh? 2022: Golly, the guy's a visionary, etc. OK. Truth is, when this popped up, I thought to myself, ini this order: "Why?" "I hate Loser" and "This is hype with a life of its own", in that order. Its still an oddball album, but not only does it work well, it was a long way from most of the stuff being done in the mid-90s. Arguable, a long way from most stuff done ever in popular music. (I mean, even Beck can get this vibe back any more). Lots of people have tried, but it's never again like the first time, is it? I guess the best way of explaining this is to propose listening to a lot of mid-to-late 60s British pop, and then listening to Revolver and Rubber Soul for the fist time. And then the penny drops.
69/100: I can tell that this is a really smartly written album. A lot of the riffs and sounds clearly took a very talented ear and mind to create. With that being said though, that doesn’t necessarily mean I actually enjoyed the album all that much. Sure, Beck clearly did a great job writing this album and thought very deeply about each song; however, it’s not that fun to listen to. I think it was probably more fun writing this album, honestly. I’d be surprised if I ever find myself listening to this album again.
Buen disco de rock suave con voz característica y agradable de escuchar. Le falta algo para ser un disco mejor.
3 Never really been able to get into Beck. I appreciate his ability to jump between and blend musical genres, and while I feel he did it pretty well here, no one track gave me the feeling of "I gotta give this song a listen again"... it felt more like he wanted to dip his toes into different genres without getting all the way in. Essentially, every song boils down to being very "Beck" at its core, like the same song was wearing thirteen different outfits. It's not a bad album by any means, but I think it's far from a masterpiece - though I'll give kudos to Ramshackle for being a solid closer. Would maybe listen again if I'm not crucified by the entire indieheads community first. Favorite songs: Ramshackle, Minus, The New Pollution
Hyvä alku, mutta menee ehkä vähän etäiseksi hassutteluksi lopulta. Kyllä silti 3.
Meh. Has some cool samples, and was pretty wacky on a first listen. However, I wouldn't go back to this. On a second listen, I didn't enjoy it so much. Sounds 'cool' but lacks depth. Nonetheless, I appreciate the variety of samples used in the songs. Stops the listening experience from being too boring.
This is...more "Beck" than I was expecting. I really loved the creativity and appreciated the sounds, but I don't know if I'd voluntarily put on more than about half of the songs here. There were lots of little details I absolutely adored, though. 3.5.
Fun to listen to - 90s rock
I don't know if it was because my version was the deluxe version, or something else, but this was 2 hours of Beck and that's just too much Beck. "Where It's At" is a classic, but not really one I want to listen to very often. I enjoyed the Aphex Twin remix of Devil's Haircut.
Instrumentaal en vocaal vond ik het goed, maar soms te veel "lawaai" ipv muziek, zeker met de random geluidseffecten.
Weird overall. Definitely feels like a 2006 album rather than 1996, putting it well ahead of it's time in terms of sound. Overall, has some strengths, but doesn't really blow me away anywhere. Carries me through, but never really wows me.
I didnt realize how important the dust brothers were to music. I liked their hanna soundtrack but they also did odelay and beastie boys too. Very signature style.
Toch iets speciaals ... Niet 100% van genoten, maar ik apprecieer de creativiteit
Well, there's a little bit of everything here. Funk, country, rock and whilst I enjoyed it, it didn't really gel as an album and I know he can do better.
My first encounter with Beck was finding the free track that came with windows media player sometime in the early 00's. I think my experience of his music has forever been tainted by that. I thought this album was ok, I can appreciate the multi instrument use, inventive sampling and production but I just couldn't get into it. I struggled with the second listen. Sometimes you come across a good artist that just doesn't work for you.
Not absolutely bad, but it was quite long and boring. It just didn't get to me, what can I say.
Not my type, but I understand the hype that I could have been back in the 90's. Objectively a 3..
Couple of good songs. But that was about it.
Never a massive Beck fan, but it was a fun listen. Radio hits are the notable tracks, but also have heard too many times in my life. Also enjoyed "Novocaine" and and "High 5". This whole album is like Silver Jews meets Beastie Boys meets Eels meets electronica soundscapes – interesting but I'd rather listen to this stuff individually. Also like when Beck screams through distortion.
Rock alternativo . Un poco extraño.
Futurama has ruined Beck for me. All I can think of is the rhyming Becktionary, dammit.
Beck is good in small doses, like sprinkled through a playlist. Listening to a full album is like sitting in a Guitar Center and listening to kids try every setting on a synth.
No esperaba casi nada y lo termine y ahora soy feliz
I had this album back in the 90s but I probably traded it in pretty quickly. Definitely one sound of the 90s.
Pretty fun listen! In hindsight I get why I couldn't get into this album when I first tried back in my teens. Can really appreciate what Beck's doing here that was so groundbreaking and fresh for the mid-90's.
Beck is a puzzling artist whose musical genre mix ups should satisfy (especially with The Dust Brothers onboard - the beats are fresh) but the cut and paste approach combined with Beck’s elliptical lyrics renders the whole project a little flat. There’s no meat on the bones, nothing to grab hold of - no tap along, no sing along, no dance along. It’s a bit of a mess. I’m sure it makes sense to Beck.
Canciones muy interesantes con un sonido muy particular que te transportaba a otra realidad. No tengo mucha idea pero ha sido un albun interesante y con unos claroscuros inquietantes
Some good hits mixed with some ok songs.
Becki on kyllä ihan vekkulia kamaa. Aina kuunnellut randomina yksittäisiä kappaleita (hittejä), mutta kokonaisuuteen ei ole tullut vielä perehdyttyä.
I really like how the sound keeps changing. his voice is special. if you're not used to this sound, it's a weird album to listen to for the first time but it's so creative. I likes a lot some (most) of the songs, some others not so much.
Not huge on this album but it did show some originality.
Strong record, has great moments although it gets weird at times. All the respect to Beck
I find Beck Odelokay
Beck sure does write some songs and then sing/perform them, doesn't he? Very middle of the road, but never annoyed or insulted me.
What a weird album. I mean, it's a Beck album so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'll say one thing for this record: No two tracks sound the same. For that reason I can't say I'm in love with the whole album, but I also can't say I hate it, either. A few tracks were forgettable (but not BAD), most were decent, and a couple of them were definitely fun and worth revisiting. Overall, a solid 3 stars. Fave tracks: "Derelict" and "Computer Rock"
Some jams on here.
It was ok, but only being familiar with one Beck song before (Loser) this album wasn’t as good.
I don't think that this has aged particularly well.
Doesn't include the one Beck song I know so that's definitely a mark against. Interesting genre-blending but doesn't ever quite coalesce into anything really catchy or memorable in my experience.
"Devils Haircut" is a classic Alt Rock song that I feel like I heard a ton as a kid. "Where It's At" is very much so the same in that regard. It's a decent album. There just wasn't anything I loved about it.
deux trois titres sympas
I kinda liked 'Loser' and the singles off this album but generally find Beck a bit insufferable and average. There's always been something a bit fake boho and smug about him. Always struggled to get how some people think he's the absolute best.
Like most hangs with stoners, it goes on a bit long.
I had much fun while listening to this album. Enjoyed the variety of genres and pleasant vocals. However, I can't remember a single melodic line from it. Possibly will come back to it in the future.
Mocne 3/5.
oh delay
Good fun, at times great - but a bit overlong and quite a few fillers. Devil's Haircut and Where It's at are 90s mainstays and iconic though
It’s ok. Cool sounds. Voice and certain sounds get boring and annoying at times though. 2.5/5
It's a really strong beginning to the album for me! I love the first half, then I'm not so into Where it's at or Minus to be honest. Not a good vibe for me, I find parts a bit boring and other parts pretty stressful. I find other tunes really quite feel-good and they remind me of some of my favourite Beak> tunes but maybe I'd get more out of seeing it live because I'm not getting much feeling from it...
This was pretty good and had some classic Beck tracks on it but overall wasn't as good as other Beck albums
Good but never great
So many hits. Lyrics are loony. Production is groundbreaking. At one time this was my favorite record. It's still fun for nostalgia but a little dated.
Unoffensive, but pretty bland
This album showed the public that "Loser" wasn't going to be the last they heard from Beck. Showing the same inventiveness as his earlier albums, Beck also manages to create a cohesive album experience and experiment with some of his other notable musical stylings such as the harmonica and screeching distortions.
Some good ideas, but didn't stand out much too me, and at some times was a bit much, or too boring. Favorite Songs: Devils Haircut, Where It's At, Ramshackle
I actually liked this one because of the creativity. I didn't lose interest at any point. But I don't think it was worth a 4, although I considered it, because I probably wouldn't seek it out again. I'm rating based on how drawn I am to it and in that case it is a 3. Not bad, but not my thing either. There were moments that I liked but overall I wasn't super into it.
Cool and creative
It’s alright. Where’s its at is not bad. Devils Haircut is probably the best song on this.
It gets choppier and choppier as the album progresses, but the songs get better as well. Still don't get the hype for Beck though; some songs sound like what I used to do on GarageBand on my mom's iPhone.
Mediocre
Sea Change fand ich ja abscheulich, diese Platte hingegen überraschend gut.
It's a Beck album, and as such contains a wide sonic palette. In Odelay's case, there seem to be two, both worth listening two, but not quite knitted together. I found the punk/hip-hop/hint of classical bits to be quite compelling. The indie-country minutes were more expected and perfunctory.
While a clearly innovative and talented musician, the general sound of the album is not enjoyable and comes off quite irritating at points due to the dramatic changes of samples and sounds.
It was fine. A few hits that I remembered from the past and radio replay surrounded by songs that I didn't remember / never heard. A few songs I'd hear again. But the whole album was too diverse for me to listen to the whole thing again. Devil's Haircut was a good starter.
Listening to this album is like having a crash course in all the alternative music genres of the mid 90’s
Interesting. John Cage vibes in places.
rock baet
**11/30/2021** Today's Album: "Odelay" by Beck- Devils Haircut is a great opener to this album. This beat is so upbeat and fun and I like how it breaks down a little bit right before 2 minutes. The amount of sounds being thrown at me is really refreshing and the production on all of it sounds so so good. Hotwax is such a smooth song and it reminds me of no rest of the wicked. The way his lo-fi beats are mixed with that southern instrumentation is so masterful. Holy shit the instrumentals in between verses gets wild. I really like those weird abrasive noises. Wow this is some interesting shit this sounds so weird. It works unusually well. The ending is so weird ahh what is happening? Lord Only Knows is also a great track. So far I'm getting the impression that he mixes classic country sounds with these new digital sounds and effects. I like it so far, but I feel like I have to be in the mood for these kinds of sounds. Ooh the guitar feature at 1:35 was super cool I like that. The New Pollution is a fantastic track and I believe I have heard it before. The steady rolling beat and chill vocals with all of the effects is just so cool. This style of song works way better with those glitchy effects than the other previous songs. That saxophone is just the cherry on top as well. Derelict is a very strange and eclectic song. I sort of just don't like how obtuse it is. The stuttering beat and dark tones just don't really hit to me and although I like some of the droning synths, it just isn't keeping my interest. Novacane is a more laid back song, with very strange effects launching us into this harsh rock beat. I really like the ambience of this song, but I don't know how crazy I am about Beck's rapping here. I think the style is all there, but I just can't really get into his voice. This album definitely enters noise-rock territory and I enjoy how it's done. This song is actually winning me over slowly as he keeps going. I like the building noisy effects and the frequent drop offs. His shouting of NOVACANE is reminiscent of Oxygen by Swans to me and the swelling bass just absolutely fucks my ears in a good way. The glitchy effects that transition to the end of this track are fairly abrasive. I'm not sure if it is really my thing. This is like that ear fucking I was talking about a second ago but now its rape. Jack-Ass starts off as this really pretty track and I really like Beck's vocals here. It's a definite mood switch from Novacane, but I really like how it brings this album down a notch. I really like the bouncy guitar effect too. This kind of reminds me of a Wilco song if Wilco was more straightforward. I actually really like this track as it goes on. The sitar and harmonica really welcome me in before everything is cut off again with these donkey sounds. Ooh those vinyl cracks are cool. Where It's At already sounds very familiar. I still don't know if I completely like Becks rapping, but it is growing on me and this beat is so smooth it's pretty hard not to love. I actually think I don't really fuck with the chorus on this one. I like that soft brass and the spoken word sample, but yeah I don't really like the, "WHERE ITS AT" vocal. Goddamn, though it's hard to hate anything about this when that bass, guitar, and piano are staying so smooth and sound so good. The horn freakout at the end is pretty sick and I like the effect on it. Minus is a cool track but I really am having a hard time keeping my attention. It just sounds kind of obnoxious in all honesty. Sissyneck on the other hand, is really fun with this whistling in the background and bass absolutely rocking it. I like the country guitar embellishments and the vocals aren't too bad. It's a decent song but there isn't too much to say about it in my opinion. Readymade is yet another droning track that comes and goes. I don't like how these past few tracks lack personality like the first few. They just sort of come and go. They sound okay, but they don't leave much impact. High 5 is just kind of weird. I don't really know if I like it or not. It's just sort of experimental for being experimental sake. His vocals are way to distorted to get anything out of it. kind of a mid track like the last few. Ramshackle is actually bringing things back a bit in terms of quality. I like how it takes its time and I actually really like his soft folky vocals in this track. Unlike most of the album, he's not going overboard with this track and it sounds so much better. He sounds best when he strips things back. The acoustic guitar definitely starts to go off, but it doesn't go overboard and there aren't a ton of other effects overshadowing the nice melody. I really like this track and I think it gives a good energy going into the end of the album and actually could have ended the album itself. The last track, Computer Rock, takes that pretty ending and shits all over it. It ends in the most abrasive and unflattering way possible. Literally ruined the last song by just how stupid this closer is. Overall, I really like some of the ideas presented in this album and the first half starts off so strong, but by track 9, its obvious that Beck was working off of half baked ideas and any good song that he would construct, he would just weight down with these over the top effects and abrasive noises. There are definitely some highlights here, but it really isn't worth sitting all the way through. I will add the songs I like to my playlist and dump the rest. Score: 5.5/10 half fantastic, half awful. Highlights: Devil's Haircut, New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Ramshackle
Beck has such a distinct sound and I do enjoy it. This album took you on a psychedelic ride at times. But it also had rock mixed in. It felt like an experimental album. Decent listen overall
6/10
definitely an interesting album. the songs felt unnecessarily long, but there were a few hidden gems on here. you can definitely see how this inspired groups like the white stripes, gorillaz and the strokes
Enjoyed this one, tooke me back to the 90s and listening to JJJ radio station.
Some real nice bangers, but then it goes into some different genres so the album is a bit all over the place for me. Not into Beck's hip-hop stylings really, this album does feels very 90s in that regard.
Solid
Big beats, funky fun. Quirky and scuzzy.
Interesting in parts, but overall a rather chaotic album that did not really grab me.
In „Jack-ass“ flimmern kommende Jahre hindurch, sonst geht viel Richtung 1-man Beastie Boy. Überfrachtete 3.4
5/10
Look, I think Beck is great. Devil's haircut? Put it on any day. That being said, he just goes too far out there on occasion. I'm pretty sure there was a whole part that was just microphone feedback in one of the songs? That's nobody's "thing", ok. Nobody enjoys hearing that. No one in the history of music has ever gone: "You know what this song needs? Some microphone feedback." Except Beck, apparently. For this, and the other annoying parts of the album, 3 stars.
There's some classics on here for sure. But I feel like I've tried listening to this a few times and its just faded into the background.
i liked this one!! best track was hotwax. id rlly rate this one a 3.5 but i cant do that. a few stand out tracks but the rest were kind of background noise.
Unoffensive but uninteresting. A bit too "quirky" at times, so I couldn't really stick with it.
Decent
Cool
Lord only knows fängt erstmal mit nem Scream an Etwas noisy und unfokussiert. Aber sehr vielfältig
Unoffensive, but not my thing.
Un toque muy raro para mí, pero tiene sus joyitas. Sería 3.5 pero como no hay, es 3 nomas
This one has its moments. Nothing more than that though. Definitely not the classic I’ve been led to believe but then I never really dug Beck anyway? So 3 stars it is.
