Ok, interesting but I didn’t love it

Дискотека 90 в кибердеревне. Начало альбома обманывает предполагаемой простотой всего последующего, что совершенно не так. Взлетающий звуковой коллапс бьет по ушами в начале, но стоит вникнуть а него и прислушаться это превращается в чудовищно продуманный живой строгий проект. Почти в каждой композиции наблюдается специальный рассинхрон, который надо признаться надоедает уже на середине альбома, но это надоедание - совершенно мимолётно. Альбом можно назвать сборником всевозможных звучаний, семплов и кусков. Соединены хаотически педантично. На протяжении всего прослушивания испытываешь смятение, непринятие и метание. Нельзя не отметить и просто прекраснейшие барабаны, которые греют уши своей структурой и подбором звука. Альбом максимально экспериментальный перенасыщенный и единственный в своем роде. Лично я за всей громадой звуков не до конца понял суть и эмоцию. Оценка финальная 5,5/10.

Not my cup of tea

The amount of genre-hopping and the growth from his last album is impressive, but considering the rest of Beck's discography, I've always thought of this as kind of bridge album that he made before he got really good.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I only knew Back as the “Loser” guy, and this sounds like great development from the sound of that song. I considered rating it higher, but I feel like this album wears out its welcome as it goes on, though maybe that’s because I was tired when I listened to it. 3/5

An interesting mash up of musical styles and beats but I’m never emotionally drawn in by Beck

Heard of beck, but only because of that one song. I know he’s not my style so low expectations. Devils haircut is pretty cool. Good writing and production. A little goofy which I’m expecting all of this to be. Not a fan of the short guitar bridge. I’ve heard hot wax before I think. This one is pretty good but I hate some of the production choices. No need for the mic feedback, adds nothing and honestly kind of ruins a good chorus. Good lyrics again aside from that. A little too much going on with this one. Nice change of pace with lord only knows, this is what I expected all of the songs to be like. Good pop song. Cool (but short) guitar solo. None of the songs sound the same from start to finish which I can’t tell if I like or hate. The new pollution is really fun, love the sax/keys solo. Catchy aside from that as well. Love what they did with the sound engineering at the end. Highlight the sax. Derelict is choppy and disorienting. Not a fan of this one. I can appreciate the uniqueness and his range, but I just don’t like the song. Really good guitar/production as a whole on novacane. Bullshit lyrics. This is the beck I was expecting. Terrible autotune ruins what’s actually a well written song. Another really choppy one, should’ve ended 3 times before it actually did. I like Jack ass a lot. If he stuck to this style I think I’d like the album a lot more. Awesome harmonica on this one. Where it’s at is a banger. Carried by that guitar riff. Lyrics are whatever. Production is so damn good. Minus is fine. I like the guitar/production again but the vocals are so bullshit. Hate the last 15 seconds too. Sissyneck is better. Pretty good pop song. Good production again. Readymade is forgettable. Fine song nothing special to it. High 5 sucks. This dude should just not be rapping. Skipped this one half way through I just couldn’t. I actually like rmashackle a lot. Couldn’t be anymore different from high 5. Emotional well written song. Did not like computer rock at all. One of the worst outros I’ve ever heard. Kind of encapsulates the album. There’s a lot of good but also a lot of “what was this dude thinking.” Musically it was really impressive, but as an album it was meh. 2.6/5 stars.

I’ve always felt that Beck was quite overrated. I think a lot of the time the added sound effects, drum breaks and other gimmicky instrumental bits are there mainly to cover for the fact that many of his songs aren’t that interesting - as if his answer for writing a mediocre song isn’t to try to improve the writing but to just add “cool” effects on top to distract. It comes off to me as very showy but with little substance. That said, there are a few songs that are catchy enough to grow on me a little.

This is my third Beck album of the challenge and probably the one I was most familiar with before sitting down for the daily listen. Looking back at my previous reviews, I found Sea Change and Guero fairly average overall, so I was interested to see where Odelay would land for me. For me, Odelay contains Beck’s best song — “Devils Haircut”. What a brilliant indie tune. It instantly grabs your attention and perfectly sets the tone for the album. There are plenty of other strong tracks here too, especially “Where It’s At”, “Minus” and “Sissyneck”. What stands out most about Beck is how distinctive his sound is. You know it’s him almost immediately. Odelay jumps between genres in a completely carefree way, blending indie rock, hip hop, blues and alternative music together while still sounding cohesive throughout. The album constantly shifts direction but somehow keeps that unmistakable Beck identity from start to finish. My only real criticism is that the album does feel a little too long at 14 tracks and over 50 minutes. There are a couple of songs early on that could probably have been trimmed without hurting the overall experience. Still, this is comfortably the Beck album I’ve enjoyed most so far in the challenge. I frequently found myself tapping my foot to the groove here, but I think that's all the further I got with enjoying it. Nothing grabbed me too closely, and there were more internet dialup noises for no reason during the album. I don't understand why bands feel the need to do that. Ultimately, this feels like the type of music you put as background to a travel montage in a movie. Perfect 3.

Damn it, dis is groovy. I'll give it a 3 or 4 tomorrow based off how much pleasant residual funk remains in my system.

Like other Beck albums, I really like his style and sound and a lot of individual songs. But it feels really long and has a lot of things I would skip if I were to listen again. He has such a unique style and sound but the album as a whole isn’t perfect to me. Top Songs: Hotwax, Where It’s At, Ramshackle

I was pretty excited but a little let down on full listen. Very unique but it doesn't all hold up too well. When he's on it is groovy but some of it just sounds like noise. 3.8.

This is definetly one of the most eccentric albums out there. And its also a whole piece, I cant really pick just some tracks because this whole album is an experience, combining different genres and fusing tastes together, from rock, country, jazz and electro themes. I really appreciate the creative process

It has been a really long time… Yeah, I remember wanting to like this album more than I did. And that remains the case. I would actually count myself a Beck fan, I generally enjoy his genre mishmash. But this album doesn’t… flow. Just when I start to dig it, it takes a hard right, or left, and enter in the video game noises. It’s Brechtian. I’m not a fan of Brecht’s plays and I can’t say I enjoy this album. None the less, I do appreciate it. So 3 stars. Boolean rating: yes, I suppose I am glad to have heard it again. But maybe not again after this.

Starts off really good but it gradually gets to be weirder and weirder. I did like all of the samples and throwbacks Beck used here, the songs he sampled are very different yet work in this scenario as well. It definitely had it's moments but a number of the songs on here made me really wanna turn it off.

Second of 3 Beck albums in this experience and I think I may be slowly turning into a Beck fan. I don't like this one as much as I liked Guero. I just didn't think the songs were as good on this one as they were on Guero. Maybe that would have changed if I listened to this one first? Who knows? Still enjoyed it though. 3.5 rounded down to a 3/5

Love how weird this is and so happy it exists. Will I ever relisten to the weirdest, more unpopular tracks of this album? Mmmm, no.

There’s a pretty big handful of Beck songs that I really like, and a couple of them are on this album. This is not my preferred back era, however. For some reason, I never really got into this album, so I’m curious to spend some more time with it. I definitely like the idea of what's going on here, but as a whole I don't see myself revisiting too much.

-truly a "mixed feelings" record for me. The highs are quite high, but there's a lot of stuff that aged poorly, doesn't hit right, or is just too dilettante. -the singles are absolute stand-outs. New Pollution sounds great to me and, even though I've heard it a zillion times, Where It's At is still a surprisingly weird song to have become a moderate radio hit. The best parts of the album are the ones that lean away from all the dabbling and posturing, and instead just try to build a steady psychedelic groove. -as a kid, I wondered how the hell Beck wrote and recorded these songs. As an adult I can't help but hear this as a Dust Brothers album with Beck singing on top. -there's so much stylistic hybridity going on here it feels like Beck is being a self-conscious appropriator, which isn't always as cute as he thinks it is. Beck is a pretty good epitome of postmodernism (derogatory). -there are absolutely some songs on here that sound like Kid Rock.

My only exposure to Beck before this was the Futurama episode... Not really sure what to make of it, very mixed feelings. Firstly, and probably most importantly, I'm not a fan of Beck's vocals. His tone just makes him sound bored, and as a result it also makes me feel bored. The album is absolutely all over the place, it's definitely experimental, and deserves some credit for that aspect, but it's also just totally incoherent and well, just a bit odd? There were definitely moments where I started to get into it, and then it would just descend into some gigantic noisy mess with no redeeming features... Overall, "meh" out of 5, which I'll call a very low 3.

I like experimental music, this is experimental, I'm unimpressed. This feels like experimentation for the sake of being different rather than experimenting to make music do more. Cmon guys this is 10 years after sonic youth and MBV's peak, the bar for experimental music is extremely high and you put out a soft rock album with occasional "noise" that doesn't add anything to each track. The layering is barebones and doesn't lend itself to the immersive feeling I tend to get from experimental music. There were a few moments where it all came together and it was REALLY good but then it falls apart. Like Novacane - woah really good guitar section -> lets play the rest of this song with phone dial beep boop beeep beeep. Low 3

This was definitely a Beck album. Some of it was great. Some was a bit too experimental for my taste and I didn’t find it super cohesive. Still an ok listen when in the mood. 3.5/5

Best Song: Where It's At This one is tough. Do I listen to it with my 1996, college aged, all that matters is going to class and partying rose colored glasses or do I compare it to listening to it now, in 2026, with a job and responsibilities and a deep rooted sadness that only age can bring. Music should be timeless so I guess listening to it today, I have to be a little more critical than I would have been in 1996. Some of this still holds up while some of this is just a whole big collection of suck. I will be generous and give a 3/5 just because some of the songs are still pretty good but overall, it's pretty mid if I'm being completely honest.

Odelay belongs on this list for its innovation and place in the culture. On the other hand it’s never really connected with me emotionally. I’ve occasionally wondered who this music is for. It’s not a unicorn, but nor is it a vital part of any scene. The best I can offer is it is a reflection of the times.

This album is an easy listen. I don't know how Beck gets away with it. So much confidence for a goofy, skinny white guy. Lots of steady jams here. It's a delight, and sounds like Beck made it just so that people could have something fun to listen to. I could do without "Computer Rock" at the end. Could be two tracks shorter for my taste.

In keeping with tradition, I think this is fine. The best moments—"Devils Haircut," "Jack-Ass," "Where It's At"—stand out, and the rest comes and goes. The pastiche Beck and the Dust Brothers create is fun and pleasant enough to listen to, but not something that'd keep me coming back. 3.5.

Quality, but not my jam.

Yeah, I don't get it. Surprised that this one just doesn't overall really do it for me. I like Beck, I like a good amount of his stuff, and I don't love this album. Oh well. Hopefully Guero's on this too. Still can't say it's a "bad" album, I get it, it just never geled with me like his other stuff.

Beck is an immensely talented song writer. However, the manner in which he layers his songs with samples and ideas is both a blessing and a curse. This album was huge in the 90’s and I even went to the concert on this tour. I stopped to listening to Beck a few years after that. This album isn’t timeless. It’s a true 90’s gem that feels like a time capsule. Listing to it now just feels strange. What was once new and refreshing seems so antiquated. Like all great artists Beck has his own sound that was uniquely his. That’s a huge accomplishment.

Turns out I don't like Beck as much as I though I did. It's still alright. Computer rock sound like he heard his printer make a noise and thought it would make a good hook, couldn't quite figure out how to incorporate it but by god was he going to use it

This one is very strange; it's a blend of acoustic with a gajillion weirdo sounds and distortion and samples. This is truly on the line between "neat and novel" and "incomprehensible noise."

A bit of techno, a bit of soul, a bit of white boy rap. I just described this album, and every single Beck album under the sun, I think. Not bad, not great. Good background music and chill beats, but wholly unremarkable. Copy and paste for future Beck albums on this poll...

I like how it changes genre basically every song, but there are some songs that were just testing my patience. There were some very exciting songs, and then there were some very repetitive and boring songs. This album is weird to rank, I like it, but I also dislike it.

The Dust Brothers production is excellent. Unfortunately ill still have Beck's dull voice and dodgy country twangs. 2.5 stars

Fine just didn't enjoy that much

A very solid Beck album but not his finest. It was an album I listened to cover to cover for the first time, though I consider myself well versed in Becks overall catalogue. But, when discovering an album like this, one of my tests is does it hold together as a whole album experience? And for this one, apart from the singles (the excellent devils haircut, where it’s at and to a certain extent the new pollution) I didn’t find a whole lot of material that I would return to for repeat listens. Overall I felt this was the same dj rap over a drum machine and samples rather than incorporate real instrumentation. Also not a great deal of light and shade across the album. But I will say I am comparing it to a very high bar some of his later efforts that contained more conventional instruments and showcased some rich storytelling in his improved songwriting writing. I’m still giving this 3 stars but I would give 5 to his excellent Guero as well as Seachange and Modern Guilt (the latter is not in the 1001 albums but probably ought to be).

I remember this album from my middle school days. It always just seemed like a lot of nonsense set to fun music, but it was always fun to listen to. I still really like the same tracks I liked before and I had a good time reminiscing.

My friend who is a Beck superfan would probably want me to like it more than I did, buuut even she admitted it's one of his weaker works. I was not amused with the hip hop elements, and the rest was alright. The album wasn't dusturbing in any way and had some nice moments. Overall mid to nice. A beautiful 3.

Wonderfully weird. Interesting mix of genres produced with a range of sounds that Beck called “just a little off.” I really enjoyed most of the songs on this album. According to the book editors, Beck is the poster boy for Generation X, I’m Gen X, so I guess I should like it?

not something would usually gravitate towards, but it was such a refreshing and grungy album that i still would recommend if you are looking for something that will surprise you.

I recall buying this shortly after it came out, though I don't recall why. It's good, but Beck has better. No way is it an album I must (or even should) listen to before I die. It is a fairly unique sound at least. Not typical of most of the popular music at the time, so props to Beck for that. 3 stars

I liked the blend of genres and use of electronic music and mixing different genres together and I can definitely see how he's been influential, however I've heard better albums that have blended genres together with electronica and the album didnt feel as cohesive as I wished. There were a few songs I did enjoy, like 'Devils haircut' 'Derelict' 'sissyneck' and 'high 5 (rock the Catskills)'

Beck is such a quirky weirdo and the music absolutely reflects that.

I’m a casual Beck fan. Seen him live a few times. Have some songs in playlists. But I’ve never listened to a full album. All I can say about Odelay is that it is very “Beck” and I wasn’t taken by the non-single tracks. It was fine but I leaned nothing new.

At first I hated it. Random screaming... Kind of hip-hoppy at times. Then I somehow started to like it. I'm also sick right now (and same for the Cindy Lauper album) so maybe I'm not as receptive to new music now HA! Edit: really grew on me by the end. 2 tracks were removed from spotify..

Beck definitely has a very distinct sound and voice and I do enjoy it. Saved some songs for future listening.

Third beck on here, I think this is the one most point to as his masterpiece. I like two turntables. This thing is like an obvious alt rock classic but it didn’t do a whole lot for me, especially compared to his other albums. It is a little ruined too by about halfway through, still listening to the album, I tried to pull a dead squirrel out of my dogs mouth to no avail before she swallowed it and then proceeded to fight me when I tried to pick her up (she’s 12 pounds). Dog on the cover is probably nicer.

Album #83 Beck: Odelay My second Beck album on this list, and from what I understand, this is meant to be his masterpiece, yet though I agree this is a more consistent album than ‘Guero’, it doesn’t seem to be in an entirely different league. One thing I admire about Beck is his songwriting; he is definitely one of the most unique songwriters that I’ve ever heard, and he certainly knows how to turn a phrase. He has probably created thousands of unique sentences in his songs that are probably nonsensical, but in context seem somehow poignant. This album’s claim to fame is being the epitome of 90s alternative, combining every fresh new musical wave into one album, from rap to electronic, while also incorporating classics like country and folk. And though in a vacuum each song can certainly sound like it is from a different album entirely, for some reason, when listening to Odelay in one sitting, I never received any whiplash. Every song felt definitively ‘Beck’ to me, almost as if they were doused with the same shade of paint. It wasn’t until I started returning to tracks individually that I began to pick up on all the stylistic changes. I think this problem comes down to the gritty 90s production style, which never gives any track room to breathe and establish itself. That said, though, there is a lot more good to this than bad; practically every track is a good time, and Beck is probably at his best lyrically. I found myself gravitating to the more folksy deep cuts rather than hits like ‘Devil’s Haircut’ and ‘Where It’s At’, which didn’t impress me as much. I leave this album a lot more interested in hearing Beck’s singer-songwriter album “Sea Change”, which I am sure is also on this list. Definitely a classic 90s album, just held back a bit by the production for me. Best Tracks: Ramshackle, Jack-Ass, Hotwax Worst Track: High-5 (Rock The Catskills) Score out of 10: 7

I didn't really pay attention to this album much while listening to it. It is very futuristic and unique sounding which is really interesting and fresh at first. However, this album is almost an hour long and at some point I just feel like I am just listening to a bunch of video game sounds and become fatigued. Will definitely give this album another try and actually listen to it.

Fine album. Never listened to Beck before. I can see why this is such a big but to me it just sounds like 5 different genres smashed together with the occasional tambourine thrown in.

There’s a lot of experimentation and contrast here. It didn’t quite captivate me - it’s a bit too intense for my taste - but I think it’s worth taking a closer look at. 6/10

Devils haircut - love the beat. Lyrics are nonsensical. Sounds like drugs. Very rock n roll Hotwax - love the country influence. Ok Spanish? Harmonica jam. Tech sounds introduced. Kind of a love song to music and being on the off path. Otherworldly outro - like a god influenced the music Lord only knows -lyrics seem nonsensical. It’s like abandoning everything cause you have nothing left? The New Pollution - seems to be a statement about the state of the earth and it complacency. Set to funky sounds that give a spacial sound. I imagine a dystopian setting Derelict - love the use of cadence and sounds. Lots of different sound use together. Novacane - sounds like a mission to space? Digital sounds. This sounds like what I think goes on in a boys brain. A bunch of man words and sounds digital/experimental outro Where it’s at - feel like I’ve heard this on tv shows. Sounds like a 90s sitcom in the beginning. Call and response. Ode to performance and connection through music. Jam session. Is telephone plastic about music turning digital and leaving vinyl behind? Minus - 90s grunge about the world falling apart / towns going to shit / punk Sissyneck - country influence. Romanticizes simplicity. Readymade - feels like the world is falling apart High 5 - experimental - with the guy that said “turn that shit of man” kind of calls out the “noise”. Ramshackle - time changes everything and now everything is gone. But end of the day, we are all human and must act as one

Heel gevarieerd, iets te druk vind ik

It's a good album, with several memorable tracks. Beck's style and musicianship is undeniable, being both unique and familiar. Many of these songs and themes I've heard since the album came out in the 90s, so I am at least familiar with the hits. But it's just not something I find myself longing for. I'll listen to it occasionally, but feel no need to seek it out.

I liked how it sounded well within the sound of that time. I feel like if I heard it when it first dropped and then re-listened now, I’d be transported back to that time. I think that’s a special quality few albums possess.

Need to give it another good listen. Was interrupted throughout my first go around. I recognize the album's significance so my three stars may end up being lower than it deserves after listening again.

There's a couple of great tracks on this but I don't love the album overall.

The entire album sounds like a white non-Hispanic man who barely knows Spanish trying to show off his Spanglish via alternative rap-rock. Somehow, this actually isn't bad. Favorite Track: "Where It's At".

When it's successful at cross-pollinating genres, there are definitely interesting sounds that emanate from the project, but those moments don't materialize into whole songs, let alone an album. I find it more of a respectable experiment than something I would revisit.

Having loved through the entire 90s and through Beck's (I assume) peak period, I think I've only heard two of his songs. Both were fine, I didn't think much of them and didn't care to learn more. He seemed like the male equivalent of the manic pixie dream girl trope, a walking Wes Anderson archetype. I understand this is generally taken to be his most acclaimed album. We shall see. Wait, three songs! I remembered Loser. That was Beck, right? This is fine. Perfectly fine. Average. A typical slacker vibe, if a little try-hard. A precursor to the hipster movement. Cheesy as hell, to the extent that the entire album feels like that Steve Buscemi fellow kids meme. The songs are fine, dull but funky in that slacker way. Very much an example of chucking every instrument you can find at an empty husk and hoping something viable is constructed. It's a good example of that type of music, but when stripped back you realise how hollow (or non-existent) the underlying song is. Sure, what remains is a song, but there's nothing underneath. You can't take the core and make something better, you can't reduce it to a single instrument and vocalist and have something good. All style, no substance.

Coming from Sea Change and Morning Phase, Odelay feels like Beck in hyperactive‑collage mode. There’s loads of fun ideas, cool grooves, and flashes of brilliance, but it jumps around so much it never settles into anything emotionally grounding. I enjoyed plenty of moments, but the whole thing felt a bit too disjointed for my tastes. Maybe I just prefer Beck when he’s sad and focused.

Overall better than I expected. A few of the songs in the second half got a bit too experimental for me. The rest of the album was a good smooth listen.

A lot thrown at the wall on this one. When Beck hits, he hits and when he misses...well, he was trying something and usually that something was five different things at once. I feel like Ryan Dombal hit the nail on the head describing Odelay as "the world's most accomplished demo reel".

An intresting experimental album that missed the mark in execution. Intresting and artistic but not amazing.

This record feels experimental and daring, but not really to my taste. I appreciate the risks they took and I think there will be lots of people who thoroughly enjoy this album, I just am not one of them.

An interesting listen, I feel like Beck tried a lot here and I gotta respect the effort and vision, that being said I don't feel like he quite stuck the landing. The mashups between styles often felt a little awkward, which was even further exacerbated by the quite poor vocals. Some instrumental parts were actually pretty good, but did not have enough going on to carry an entire song often. All in all I can't say it was bad, but neither can I say I loved it. Maybe I would after a couple of listens but that doesn't really sound attractive to me 5.5/10

Listening to Guero was a chore, this one was actually good.

Jumps between a bunch of ’90s genres I usually like. There are definitely highs and lows, but it mostly melts into the background and I never felt like skipping tracks. Nothing crazy.

Not as good as I remember it being. Still a few great songs on here though

30 years later, this notably weird album sounds weirdly normal. That's less of a knock on the album than it is an acknowledgement that the rest of the music world caught up to Beck's eclecticism. Still, for every weird blues meets hip hop track like "Hotwax" there's a pretty standard slacker rock song like "Lord Only Knows." "Jack-Ass" is basically a Pavement song plus a few weird flourishes. And "High 5," the most hip hop song of the bunch, doesn't do anything that actual hip hop wasn't doing better at the time. Still, there are plenty of interesting sounds here. "Derelict" is a bit sleepy overall, but it has some cool hollow percussion and an industrial feel. Samples are used well in several places. And even if it is often just a kind of weird alternative rock album, it's a fresher take on alternative rock than what other bands were producing at the time.

Definitely a great rock album, a lot of cool and distorted sounds but keeps it pretty classy, had a pretty strong start with songs like Hotwax and Devils Haircut, also a pretty good closing song Diskobox

Enjoyed a lot of this, find it quite relaxing. Love a lot of the sampling, the simple guitar. Has so much going on yet still feels natural and cohesive. Even managed to avoid the 90s white rap cringe. Should be shorter, and a few songs [Derelict and Novacane] I found very grating.

This is not Beck’s best album however he is a very interesting musical artist and does deserve an album or two on this list. It’s too bad though that this album is his most popular because there are far better albums in his catalogue and it seems to be included here more due to popularity rather than quality of material. There’s really not much going on at the heart of these songs but there are a lot of great production elements surrounding these vamps. It’s good for at least one listen though and some of these tunes will likely make the most sense on the dance floor where you won’t have to intellectualize about the music and just groove to it!

Pretty fun arrangements, a lot of the non-singles have really interesting arrangements/production. I just find his plaintive voice annoying.

I feel like I need to come back to this one. It didn’t really grab me in the first have but the second half was quite good and it’s a clear influence on a lot of music I love. Not sure how to feel about it yet. A tentative three stars?

It was fine, some hits but nothing to wow you with.

I do quite like Beck as a concept. And critics loved him - he mixed a load of different genres together, funk, country, rap, the lot. it wasn't like a lot of other stuff around at the time and she seemed a nice guy (might have been a cunt tbf, but seemed nice enough). So yeah, interesting music. He sprung out of nowhere with 'Loser' but this album a couple of years later got the critical acclaim. Great riffs on Devil's Haircut. New Pollution is a banger, Lord Only Knows is decent (though sounds like Chas & Dave). The electicness continues with Jack Ass and Minus which again sound nothing like each other. It's a sprawling mess and not necessarily up my street but I do like it in parts and one I would give another go.

Very experimental, I liked some but it took me a couple songs to get into the groove of this album. Not my favorite, It felt like the musical style wasn't best for Beck. It felt like seeing someone is poor-fitting designer clothes.

I like this quite a lot actually the instrumentals were very very good for the time of the album and the vocals were ok as well. The only thing that stops me giving this a 4 star is the random noises at the end of the songs. Like occasionally it can be ok however it happened to frequently for me 3 stars A very strong 6 out of 10

Was quite enjoying it for the first five or so songs, very prepared to give it a 4 the way it was going but it did get slightly worse as the album progressed. I enjoyed the distorted guitar noises which reminded me of those in Courtney Barnett's Avant Gardener. The album had a very big mix of genres and styles which was interesting, I was surprised to find out that Beck was just one guy rather than a band, Novocaine was, in particular, notably different. The new pollution was probably the highlight of the album for me, with Where its at certainly not being where it was at and high five rock the catskills being disappointing also. The majority of the album was by no means bad but had certainly dropped off from the first lot of songs, so it'll have to be a high three rather than a 4. 68/100

Interesting listen. So impressive just how much Beck shifts genres - this was a completely different sound to Sea Change which is another album this list has thrown at me. A high 3. Some of it just didn't hit right. Liked songs: Novacane, Ramshackle, Diskobox.

This is my third or fourth favorite Beck album, and I don't consider myself a superfan. I can see how it marked an important point in his development, but I never reach for this when I'm tryna hear some Beck.

I really liked this when it was new, and it's probably the one that should be on The List. But now it seems a bit overworked/precious and Im still salty that Beck got away with being a closet Scientologist without his career suffering .

The crackly, lo fi vibe of this record makes me want to sit back in a smoke filled room and relax. While I may not partake in this hypothetical scenario, this album fits it perfectly in my mind. It’s starkly chill. Many of the tracks feel less like a fully fleshed out song, and more like a brief glimpse into a junkyard band of stoners haphazardly playing around. Pretty fun record.

What the beck is this? Definitely a mixed bag.

Nothing special here but it was lively enough to keep my attention for the full 56 minute play time.

Where It's At is great. a lot of the songs were a little too discordant for my taste. I liked the more chill songs mainly.

A super eclectic album that barrows styles from all over the place. It’s almost a rock hip hop album, the way it’s structured and the types of heavy bass line riffs many song rely on. Heavy sampling throughout. The production style is slick and mix is transparent and well balanced. Good amount of strange distortion and interesting textures too. I don’t know if it’s for me, a little too unfocused and odd (which I don’t mind if it feels emotionally focused- which this record doesn’t to me) the production feels kinda sparse too, lots of different elements but spread pretty thin sonically. I just don’t think I vibe with becks lyrical performance and stylings on this record much. There’s some bangers for sure, Sissyneck and Where it’s at, are jams. But idk ineffable about the vibe I don’t dig 3.85

I was excited for this one because I know the hits but wanted to experience this early work in its entirety--was unfortunately a bit disappointing. The guy is an artist and does some brave experimenting here, but there are some stretches of unlistenable shit.

This was great for the first 3 songs, then they veer off into the "experimental" part of the album and I gave up.

I’ve missed most of Beck’s work. I’m enjoying hearing more of his stuff lately. He’s super-talented and creative. This album is interesting and fun, but it’s trying too hard to show the artist’s range of ideas, so it sometimes doesn’t work as an album (my unit of measure). I’ve heard some other Beck pieces that I think I will like better. Like many 3’s, it could become a 4 with more familiarity and deep listening, but for now, it’s a 3.

Since I learnt about him and listening to one of his other albums from the generator, Beck is really an eclectic individual. While the other album I heard - Guero - was more eclectic, this one is kinda more like eclectic undertones with slacker rock overtones rather than new genre every song on Guero. Highlight Song/s: The New Pollution

More like Okaylay because this is simply OK. And not the good Okaylay Ned Flanders type as in Okaylay Dokaly but rather the Okaylay Schmokaly Ho Hum-aly type. Beck has a good jumble of chintzy indie, hip hoppity and orchestral sounds n loops going and Devil’s Haircut, New Pollution and Novocane are decent but it is all a bit hipster, average or annoying (especially on the weaker tracks), also pretty dated and really, Eels’ Beautiful is where it’s at!

I've always thought of Beck's music as just background music for pretentious coffee shops. With that said, it's not really bad or anything. It kin d of works at times. The beats can be kind of groovy. His bored singing/rapping can be kind of endearing. I've never gone out of my way to listen to his music, but I've never disliked it either. Basically, it's ok in my book.

I'm going to give this one 3 stars. I like Beck but some of this album I didn't love.

There are plenty of artists I could highlight as reflecting a generation brought up on TV commercials, MTV and video games in their musical output. I'm not sure if that is necessarily a contributing factor in Beck's penchant for throwing every genre into the pot, but it often comes across like the musical equivalent of someone flipping through random channels on their remote. The difference with Beck is, he managed to craft it into something commercially viable and critically accepted where so many other failed. He may not have been the first to fuse hip-hop, acoustic folk, metal, dance, electronica, kitsch etc etc (you know the drill) but he did - and continues to - do it so very well. When you consider how (intentionally) abstract his lyrics are, it is no mean feat that he managed to make hit singles out of such a rich soup of sounds and nonsense. Odelay is probably from the more pop-orientated end of the Beck spectrum, and, as such, is one of his most-respected offerings. It has dated a little - the delivery is often a little too tongue-in-cheek - but it is still a dizzying journey through an eccentric landscape of soundbites. This is music being beamed from a different place, and it is always, if nothing else, unfathomably cool and deftly produced. Not my personal favourite Beck album, but I think history will show that he was a genuine musical force who, maybe more than anyone else from the last 35 years, beat his own unique path... rather than the 90s novelty act I imagine some people maybe have him down as.

It certainly was interesting and eclectic. But maybe I need to listen to it in a better frame of mind to get the most of it, very little resonated with me for some reason.

The last song is a little weak but the rest of the album was a lot of fun. Beck (and the Dust Brothers) know how to put together a beat. Foot tapping, head bobbing. Fun times.

Another Beck album, another review of me saying “This is weird”. Honestly, it’s a compliment. I might have said it before but I appreciate the artist that is Beck, while I don’t enjoy the music all that much. To be able to create such different sounds and to have every album be completely unique is a tough thing to accomplish, especially with the amount of music he’s put out. I’ll still look forward to listening to a Beck album but I don’t think I’d ever come back to it.

Beck does this thing where he paints with such a broad stroke that he can't help but accidentally predict the future. The musical equivalent of betting on every score in a football match. This album goes all over the place from Beastie Boy style to hyperpop and art electronic. There are also some tracks on here that I really like but there are tracks I quite don't like. It's a strong 3

Surprisingly did not love this as much as I had expected to. Where It's At is clearly the best song here, and Devil's Haircut is also pretty fun. The rest is kind of in this weird place of mashed up genres that have cool parts but can be kind of boring for long stretches. Like I like the chorus of Lord Only Knows, but the rest of the song kind of drags. And the pseudo rap songs kind of sound like Kid Rock, in the worst ways (besides clearly better lyrics than whatever that garbage man produces). I really wanted to like this more.

Once again, it very much reminds me of Cake 🍰.

I can't remember the exact context or words used by Rob Harvilla in an episode of 60 Songs That Explain the '90s where he described Beck and his ilk as "mildly funky white guys" but I that's what I think about now when I hear his self-deprecating spoken word. I'd have been fine if only this album od Beck's ended up on this list, but there have been so many.

This album feels like Beck stumbled upon a keyboard, a sampler, and a pile of half-finished ideas, and decided to make something wild out of it. The result is both chaotic and inspired. When it hits, it really hits: the highs are electrifying, full of inventive production and genre-hopping energy. But some tracks feel messy and unpolished, like experiments that never quite gelled. It’s not Beck’s most refined or cohesive work, but it’s a vivid snapshot of his creative range and willingness to take risks.

This is such a departure from what I expected from Jeff. Nothing like Hi Ho Silver Lining. Yes I know its not him, must be his brother. Actually this wasn't bad on the whole. I quite liked it. Nothing spectacular but all quite palatable. Worth a mid-range 3.

Man, I don't know what it is about Beck that makes me struggle with his music. At least for his first handful of albums, he was a mishmash of styles, most of which I kinda like. His music—again, at least for the first couple of records—is catchy enough. But, I've always struggled to really "get it" with him. I think there might be a couple of reasons for this. One is that, from about 1994-2000, it was really tough to escape hearing his music. It was everywhere, and it got played often; it was on the radio all the time, it was all over MTV, I think it was in a ton of ads. I hated Beck in high school, not actually because of his music, but because there was really not much respite from it. I think, even almost 30 years later, I suffer from Beck fatigue. Listening to Odelay now feels exhausting. But I also never really clicked with Beck's whole vibe either. I feel like I ought to like him. For the first couple records, he kind of postured himself like a slacker burnout, though I'm not sure that's actually ever been true of him (truthfully, I know very little about him as a person...although I think I read somewhere that he was a Scientologist). But that was kind of my whole vibe in high school also, despite my not actually being into drugs. I feel like I probably should've been a huge Beck fan being sort of kindred spirits and all. I also have never gotten him on a lyrical front. Most of his songs seem like strings of non-sequiturs. I've always kind of wondered if he was the quintessential "all style, no substance" type of musician...but I've never been able to sit through a whole record to figure that out. I feel like he was the 90's version of a hipster; there was a lot of flair to him and his work, but it never felt like he had anything really important to say. Maybe he's easier to work with if I could conceive of him as an abstract artist or something. I don't know. I'm listening to Odelay now, and I don't feel any differently. Again, it's not that it's what I would describe as bad, and I can understand why other people like his music alright, but I find it a chore. I don't really know how to rate it. If this was the first time I was hearing any of this, I suppose I'd give it a 3.5. But since every new track I get this new wave of fatigue setting in, I'm half-inclined to go much lower than the record probably deserves, like a 2. I guess I'll rate it in the middle, and just get on with my life. 3.0/5

The country songs are the best ones here - Ramshackle, Lord Only Knows. This album is still super fun, but the nonsense lyrics aren't as interesting as I thought they were in high school.

Classic chill song Track 9: Minus - Very alternative punk, acid vibes Track 10: Sissyneck - Backing bass & drum track is a banger; the lyrics work very well with the backing track and the chorus hits really well Track 11: Readymade - Stoner rock; the low-fidelity record scratch works really well Track 12: High 5 (Rock the Catskills) - VERY Beastie Boys; you can definitely hear the label's influence on this one Track 13: Ramshackle - Total opposite of the previous track. Very acoustic and chill; almost melancholy. Track 14: Computer Rock - Outro, nothing much to say about this track; would have been a great reminder that the vinyl is over.

This is probably the Beck album to include on this list (and maybe Morning Phase since it won Album of the Year), but there is something fundamentally...bland? about Beck and I never really find myself connecting with his songs or lyrics. I think my favorite album from him is "Modern Guilt", which is probably more due to Dangermouse's production. I like some of the hits ("Devil's Haircut", "New Polution", "Where its at"), but again, nothing I really connect with or would seek out. If it came up on my streaming radio station, totally fine, but I don't think I'd ever put this on intentionally.

Pas méga stimulant mais vraiment bon délire. Quelques passages nerdy-psyché / troll qui m’ont un peu pris la tête mais dans l’ensemble j’ai passé un bon moment.

Two Beck albums over three days is an awful lot of Beck to consume for someone unfamiliar with his work. But that being said, he’s growing on me! I enjoy the rough sound of this one. It doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously. Some good bops in there with songs like Devil’s Haircut. A light 3 ✨

Not my fave Beck album. The lyrics are kinda annoying. Odd word combinations that don’t mean anything. At least not to me. Some groovy rhythms but overall not memorable and not something I would come back to.

Not my type of music and I don't really see why people like it so much but I definitely wouldn't say that it's bad quality

It is good album.

Some good sounds on this one, but the experimentation makes it a little hard to listen to. [Where It's At] will always be a bop though.

A frustrating album, in parts brilliant and others boring and annoying. Beck has proven such over his now long career and leaves me unconvinced. There is enough brilliance here to justify 3 stars but I long for it to finish even now having also owned this from its release.

Don’t love Beck, but this album was decent. A bit long for me, but I liked the style fusion and the sampling. Good work.

'Odelay' is very much a mixed bag of an album. There's a bunch of unique and inventive songs on here, including the hit singles 'Devil's Haircut' and 'The New Pollution', but there's also a bunch of other songs that take experimentation to its extreme, such as the trippy hip hop of 'High 5 (Rock the Catskills)' and 'Where It's At', some country hints in 'Lord Only Knows' and 'Sissyneck' and a helluva lot of dubs and looping. Beck has a firm case as arguably the most "alternative" artist associated with the 1990s, as there wasn't a single genre of music (country, folk, grunge, rap, hip hop, electronica, psychedelia), and many consider 'Odelay', his fifth album, to be his crowning achievement. But while Beck's certainly 'God tier' when it comes to creativity, 'Odelay' comes off as a little unfocused at times, as if Beck was trying so hard to cram as many ideas as possible into the one album. According to a Rolling Stone interview he did years later, Beck said 'Odelay' might’ve been the last chance he had to make a record, a weird comment considering the success of his previous album, 'Mellow Gold'. 'Odelay' certainly plays as an album of a musician desperate to showcase everything he's capable of, and while he does see success at times, the weaker songs on this album could probably have done with a rethink. With that said, 'Odelay' is certainly a record that feels at home with the sound of the 90s, and Beck's genius is certainly on show, although its hard to shake the fact he probably overachieved on this album a bit, as there's a little too much going on for it to be a bona fide classic, at least in my opinion. This album reminds me of my childhood in Lake Wilson. Every single off this record used to get played on the radio station out of Marshall, and I’d stay up late trying to catch the underground rock show they had at the time. Released just 2 years before KISS unleashed their war crime in the form of a record “Psycho Circus” in 1998, “Odelay” was a breath of fresh air in the grunge soaked, overplayed age of the mid 90s. Catchy, unserious, and occasionally deep without meaning to be, Beck showed us that it was cool to be uncool again, but in a much different way. His nonsensical, Dylanesque lyrics don’t do it for me though.

As much as I enjoy Odelay for "Devil's Haircut" and a handful of others, it's too much of a mixed bag to keep my attention all the way through. It's a bold new direction for Beck, hinted at on Mellow Gold. It mostly works out. "Ramshackle" and "Jack-ass" emotionally moving, "Hotwax" and "Lord Only Knows" are nice nods to his anti/freak folk beginnings, and Odelay as a whole is a feast of samples, a la Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. "Readymade" evokes alt-music contemporaries Soul Coughing. Beck's blending a genres and openness to new directions is admirable, and it mostly works, but some experiments just don't pan out.

He comes off a little ironic to me at times but there's a lot of interesting stuff on here. Strong finish with the last three songs. High key 3

Growing up my dad used to sing Devils Haircut to my sister and I and now that man is out somewhere drinking in Portugal. These two things are unrelated. 3.73
