3/5 not my favorite but enjoyable and varied.
Have been meaning to get around to beck for a while and idk why I'm feeling a little underwhelmed. Whole album has a sense of carelessness and snark, but sounds quite clean for an album with so many unique samples. Good enough to put on in the background or while you're out for a walk, but not interesting enough to hone in on anything special.
really does feel like the beginning of a trend
Just listened to this on Sunday, ironically. Not Beck’s best but wouldn’t discourage a listen. Gets bonus points for being more creative than 9/10 other artists of the period. 3.5
Expansive, inventive, and kinda flat. I dunno if it's the 30 years between then and now, but none of this feels fresh the way it probably did back then. It still holds that sun-bleached california summer feel, blazing pavement and scrubby plants growing up in unexpected places, but I dunno - I don't have to hear it. These songs have been with me for most of my music-listening life as radio play or whatever, but while I won't turn it off, I don't feel the need to seek it out.
Sweet.
No me gustó tanto como a mucha gente que lo adora, quizá tuve un mal día, o una mala comida, pero...
Oh dude hell yeah, love this album! My mom grew me up on Beck, “Devil’s Haircut’ was a staple on my iPod nano. Goofy cover, but in a good way. 1 Yeah just as good as I remembered. Inject these drums into my veins bro, that snare sound is incredible. Bass line and hook are catchy as hell, and I love that little beep boop electronic thing that kicks in after one of the choruses. Crunchy guitar and feedbacked vocals rip as an outro. Great fucking song. 2 This Southern cowboy slide guitar shit is so sick. He sounds more like a white guy rapping on this, tbf, and the hook is a little too abrasive to be proper catchy— but then that absolutely filthy sub-bass sawtooth drops in after the first hook, and I’m back. Beck sounds so cool once you buy in. Drums are immaculately mixed, when they get more acoustic on the chorus it pans farther the left with the higher frequencies (you can hear it the hat) and it gives them such great depth. A bit goofy, and not as good as that great first track— def coulda grown a bit more substantially if we’d gonna do 3 longer verses, as opposed to adding little four-bar layers of weird instruments. Outro is proper silly, but cool. Weirdly groovy. 3 Genre switch to such a rootin tootin folksy rock really cements the alternative flag this album flew. Beck’s vocals are kind of a you like em or you don’t think, and I like them. Love how the track is mixed, good balance between the right and left, Gives Wilco vibes as a complete package here. What a silly fade-out, makes the song kinda ephemeral. 4 Dude the feedback with flute as an intro, and then the funky ass vocal melody over such incredible drums? Dust Brothers fuck bro this sound is so crystallized. Love the experimentation while still making catchy shit. Sax is dreamy. It’s so splintered, such fragmentary instrumentation, like action figures from different IPs all in the same play scene— but it works for me. 5 Absolutely love the percussion here, but I do think the package as a whole doesn’t come together. Like he tries to sing like Beck on a track that sounds very left of Beck rhythmically speaking. Love the finger piano and weird drone thing. His lyrics are always non-sensical, but because the instrumental is also kinda non-sensical there’s a sense of confusion. God the drums that kick in after the second verse, and then the raga strings and percussion? Wish more songs used tabla it sounds so sick. Wish he committed to that stuff as more than just a bridge— as is, feels like a really cool choice used more aesthetically than substantively. 6 Again, drums!!! Golly dude Dust Brothers just mix them bitches so well, word to the Fight Club OST. Love the sampled transitions, do not love the vocals. Way too fuzzy for how seriously he’s taking them. There’s definitely some Avalanches or The Books DNA in certain parts, I just feel Beck’s choice of song form can be a little samey and uninteresting, and I’m not convinced of his rapping on this like I was on track 1. The actually chorus is pretty cool, guitar sounds dope— I think the instrumental being as wacky and fun and cool as it is saves this song for me, because the moments it all comes together are so good. 7 Lil bit of a psychedelia kinda vibe? Really think his vocals fit that guitar tone like a glove. Lil bit of glockenspiel action is pretty as a mf, and love the harmonica that pops up later. This album is full of samples you don’t know are samples, and I think that’s a testament to the composition. Beck’s lyrics are some of the strongest I’ve heard from him too, proper poetry. Really think this is gonna be one of my faves on this album. The fucking donkey on the end? Tf? Great. 8 Love the vinyl crackle at the beginning, love the keys even more— what an absolutely filthy lil riff. The clap and sing along thing with the hook is pretty cheesey, the vocoder is the first experiment that super does not work for me on this record— feels incredibly conspicuous. I do love the little drum breakdowns and random samples throughout, though, especially with the sax and trumpet textures. Very split on this song— on one hand, the groove is immaculate, but the execution is a little too scattered I think. Kind of an aimless jam session by the end— the fade-out fits, and not in a good way. 9 Very Jeff Rosenstock, diy punk with glockenspiel lol. Goddamn that bass tone is great. Lyrics are good, but don’t fit the song— the abstractions are fun and sonically pleasing, but the instrumental suggests the lyrics should a salient point (punk tradition) and they definitely don’t. Still liked it, it’s fun. 10 A little forgettable, kinda sounds like other songs in this album but done less interestingly. I do like the dial tone thing like halfway though, weirdly cool. 11 Crackle is a little too strong on this, feels kinda performative. Feels like it doesn’t build to anything, and the bass tone is way too clean— way too trebly, way too much in >2000 hz registers with nothing lower to balance it out 12 Goody wikiwikiwhat ass music, and the vocal filter is wwaaaaay too much. Truck driver rippity rap, and the hook sounds like Sunday school slipknot. Love the random classical music sample, dislike everything else. Second half of this album is all over the map man 13 Oh, now see I really like this. Really love the lyrics, “Hand me downs / Flypaper towns / stuck together, one and all” is great in meter and substance both. Love the acoustic guitar, and love how it’s panned with a slight chorus— a bit in the left, and a bit in the right— and overall, love the sparser Americana sound. And then it builds on it all, breaks out some interesting chords (I think suspended something, if my music theory is right?) in a subtle lil bridge of sorts. Good composition. Surprised this isn’t the album closer honestly, super pleasant. 14 Well, so much for pleasant. The rhythm just isn’t interesting enough to justify a loop like this, and it’s abrasive in a way ill-fit to an album with otherwise recognizable song forms. Poor choice. I dunno, I still have a nostalgic soft spot for this album— and I really like the songs I like— but as a package, it doesn’t quite come together. The idiosyncratic nature justifies a bit of buckshot, but not this much.
I own a few Beck albums and I like his, never loved it. Odelay is admirable rather than entirely enjoyable. I do like a lot of it and appreciate the artistry in the use of samples and traditional instruments. Some of his laconic vocal mannerisms can grate at times, particularly on “Derelict” and I am always disappointed when “Novocaine” starts and I realise that, yet again, I have mixed it up with the better Eels song. I guess Beck may be a greatest hits artist for me. But “Devil’s Haircut”, “Where It’s At” and “The New Pollution” are excellent.
Had some cool ideas, loved at least two tracks, but at some point started to blend. Did not expect him to speak Spanish, that was awesome.

interesting album. so very 90's core, rock and all. nice use of trumpets and other brass throughout the album though !!
Compared to Beck's Sea Change, the more experimental approach on this album is quite refreshing. There's something about the blend of such different genres and production styles, when done well, that makes it work. Still, nothing that special about this.
Interesting album. Goes from Punk Rock to Soft Rock very quickly. Good listen. 5.9/10
Some interesting production but didn't do anything for me.
I can appreciate the artsy fartsy sounds he's going for, but not all of them were entirely pleasant on my ears. This album dipped HARD in the middle. Wanted to stop listening. It finished alright starting with Sissyneck (minus High 5 & Computer Rock) though. Devils Haircut, Derelict, and Sissyneck were the standout good songs for me.
Lots of creative weirdness going on. I enjoyed the percussion and a few of these songs. Definitely didn't know what to expect next. Too much filler to get four stars.
I liked parts of it but its not exactly my cup of tea
First few songs had me thinking I was in for a treat but then he gets a bit too temple run on derelict and it’s downhill from there. Some tunes but mostly a bit shit. I really like the cover art though. Specific rating 3.4 Fav song - new pollution Least fav - diskobox
Such a variety of songs, some that I really liked and some much less. As an album I want to like it; it's like a collage of samples and genres without being too disconnected. But some of the songs are just too annoying to listen to the whole album again. Favourite song: Lord Only Knows Least: Where It's At
Certainly some variety here.
It’s a good background album to have on maybe at work. It’s not overly enthralling nor offensive. It’s almost a blend of surf rock, groove and pop. I can see a small subset of bands sitting in this genre, non of which I’ve listened to since I was young.
This is #day246 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this one was kind of more engaging, if you will, than the previous Beck album I got. But still, I'm not sure I'm a fan. There's a peculiarity around this artist that I can't help but mention. As an occasional vinyl collector, I've noticed in Ukrainian vinyl communities on Facebook that Beck is oddly appreciated by audiophiles... There are just those acts, you know? Yello comes to mind, too. It's an unexplainable phenomenon, especially since most of those audiophiles get to be in their forties or fifties. Me, I don't really care for this music for the most part. A weird combination of hip-hop, lo-fi, indie/alternative rock, and whatever else in between. Also, I've said that before, but I'll say it again: there are too many Beck records on this list. I'm pretty sure you don't have to listen to all of them before you die. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day247.
5/10
确实很硬地
Good tunes, still not the biggest fan of beck though
So, I like some of Beck’s songs. I just don’t get the critical acclaim. I think his sound was definitely unique in the 90’s, so I get that. A lot of lyrics just seem like nonsense words, so not really a cohesive song with a meaning. Musically it’s good, but lyrically I can’t make sense of it. I’m a rube, lol.
Fun and funky just as Beck does it. This is an easy record to listen to and has a very cool and nice vibe to it. Dig it.
I like the mix of genres and the vibes, but the lyrics are not for me. This album might have been vibes before vibes was a thing.
It has some catchy moments, but not enough. It’s creative and somewhat interesting, but despite spending a good bit of time with it, it just doesn’t do much for me.
It's pretty clear from the opening track, that this album inspired a generation of white indie-rock. Legions of listeners picking up a hollow-body guitar and talk singing their way through a late nineties coming of age film, about a guy who's talent and earnestnest are overlooked. Deeply ironic and selectively dynamic, Odelay peaks on a few tracks that deviate from the songwriting formula of the album like Minus or Novacane. That being said a lot of the songs blend together in their sound. It's a bit like running into an old partner that you remember fondly only to realize that it's a time and place in your life that summons that feeling not the person themselves. While I recognize the importance and influence of this album, it was never really for me and has sort of been obliterated by the passage of time.
This album is a little more fun than I expected. There's still something to me about Beck that comes off as goofy, but if I didn't know this was Beck I'm pretty sure I'd like it a little more than I do. Novacane was probably the best track. I raced through this one a bit.
I actually had this CD back in the 90s. I guess I didn't listen to it very often though as I wasn't particularly familiar with some of the tracks. This is a pretty good album overall, and while there are some harsh tracks, I would listen again.
I listened to about half the album. It reminded me of something I'd have heard on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack. I wasn't a fan of all the distortion and the sort of lazy sound of the lead singer, but overall the album had a good feel to it. I do not anticipate I'll be coming back to this one though.
Very 90s Almost too much going on, which I usually like. May need a second listen Similar to music I like, but not resonating. Maybe too dated
It's an interesting album, I think it's far more interesting than the last Beck album the generator gave me. Straight ahead grabbed my attention by the first track, the keys every here and there is a pleasing surprise. Still, apart from all those interesting arrangements, it feels a bit plain, strange enough because it actually incorporate so many different music genres. This should be the album I like but it don't, probably because it feels a bit overproduced? A decent 3.5/5.
indie punk rock vibe. Hot wax and Devils Haircut standouts
-Beck always teleports me back to my childhood. my dad did not play about him!! I hadn’t actually heard this album before even though it seems to be regarded as his best, aside from Deadweight, a PHENOMENAL song which unfortunately is only on the deluxe version -it’s pretty cool tho! i do think I prefer Guero and some songs were a bit unremarkable. but I will always enjoy listening to Beck and it was a very consistent album in terms of quality -Favorites are The New Pollution and Derelict
Devils Haircut in my mind!!!! Still super weird maybe super dated. One single away from being a notch better.
First time getting a second album by the same artist! Other than the hits, it was only ok for me. I think it’s a three because my expectations were higher.
Quintessential Beck! A bizarre yet unique trip through the imagination of alternative rock and hip hop. Not always spot on, but a fun listen! Favorites: "Devils Haircut", "Where It's At", "Ramshackle" 3⭐️
felt like I was in a film! enjoyed it but a bit too all over the place for me personally . Favs where devils haircut and where it’s at
Erikoisempaa ja kokeellisempaa Beckiä. Ajoittain aika meluisaa, mutta on myös miellyttävämpiä hetkiä. Aika letkeä meno kokonaisuudessaan. Parhaat: Hotwax, Jack-Ass, Ramshackle
I like the distinctive sound and judicious use of samples.
Ich weiß nicht. Einiges war eingängig, zog sich aber auch. 2 1/2, ich runde auf.
I'm sure I used to like this, but now it's just somewhere between profound genius and profoundly irritating.
Frustrating amounts of variety here and there but too often he resorts to what sounds like a sampled drum loops over lazy guitar and it's only fun so many times
Very enjoyable! I probably wouldn't put this on again myself though
++: Devils Haircut, Hotwax, The New Pollution, Sissyneck, Ramshackle +: Lord Only Knows, Derelict, Readymade +-: Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Minus -: Novacane, High 5 (Rock the Catskills) 6,4/10
6.5/10. This album isn't my vibe. I found it somewhat boring and mediocre. Sorry!!! :)
It’s beck man
Bit boring Did really oike deviks haircut tho Forgettable
Experimental but I enjoyed a decent amount of it
Okay
This just fell into the background which wasn’t bad.
Pretty good at times for sure. 3.5
Difficult to compare this to anything I’ve heard before. So many different ideas and genres brought together, yielding fascinating but inconsistent results.
Surprisingly enjoyable, I think I expected mainstream and boring and it certainly wasnt either. Inconsistent but some really good things
Poor Beck. I was in thrall with the dimpled brunette that was grunge and didn’t give him much attention. He was trying hard, but I barely noticed. “Loser” was a catchy song with a great groove. I thought that was cool, but then later Beck released his classic Odelay. I heard it on the radio, enjoyed the songs, but never enough that I wanted to take him on a date. Lol I appreciate upon re-listening to this album what he was going for. Genre bending (at least to rock fans) before it was fully cool. But somehow it still doesn’t excite me enough to play it. Some of it is his voice. It’s his style, but feels flat to me. I won’t tell you to turn him off if you play it, will even enjoy it, but I probably won’t play it again.
I always felt Beck was overrated, but the album is not bad. 7/10
This was a fun listen. I've never spent a lot of time with Beck's work other than a handful of the popular songs. This album was really interesting with cool instruments and refrains and his distinctive voice. It's not exactly my taste and I don't see myself listening to it regularly because of some of the more abrasive portions of some of the songs.
pretty good
Beck is good but not for me 3/5
-kinda funk and weird -weird style, i like some of his other songs better -one song had like a tabla and harmonium or smth in the backing I swear (I THINK derelict, maybe novacane?) -fav song: maybe high 5?

Didn't click, need to relisten
I’ve always wanted to like Beck more than I actually do. People love him, he’s a massive name/act, but I just don’t get him. I like Sea Change better than this album, but this one is OK. Probably a 3.5 if I could, but I never could understand its reputation, and that didn’t change after listening to it today.
So much I like about this album right alongside so much that doesn't really work for me. Definitely experimental, but pretty longwinded and onerous in spots. I want to LOVE this album, but it's just a like for now
L'album d'un mec qui sait faire du rock, mais qui se dit que les nouveaux bruits de robot des années 90 et les beats de hip hop, ça serait cool d'en mettre un peu partout. Ben non, dommage hein.
i think i would start liking it if i listened to it more
beck is a loser
Half a dozen attempts to rewrite 'Loser', all unsuccessful. Lots of pointless and incongruous noises added at the start/middle/end of tracks.
la copertina è bella
Not bad - a bit samey, but decent background music whilst working.
I'm certainly enjoying the variety of beck on this 1001 list. But putting the whole blokes discography on the list is a questionable choice. Guero I understood, Sea Change was an awakening for me. Less songs on this one resonated with me. Except Novacane that shit blew the lid off the mahfucka.
Surprisingly creative and varied. I listened to this albums years ago and didnt get nearly as much out of it. Beck has musical depth beyond most bands I’ve seen from the mid 90’s and their influence is clearly for the next decade.
Some classic jams on this one. It definitely sounds like the 90s
Another Beck album, there are a lot of them on this list. It was alright.
Album cover 100% matches the sound. I feel like I can’t call Beck “Slacker rock” because this dude definitely doesn’t slack from how he bounces all around. Yet the end product feels…lackadaisical. It’s the type of album that a guy with multiple bongs on the coffee table and a divot in the couch (that he got for free off Craigslist) from where he always sits would bump. I can smell the stale air when I hear this album. The type of guy that has no ambition in real life but manages to engineer heinous contraptions and skillfully manipulate the scariest dealers in order to smoke 10% more weed 15% more efficiently would love this album. I guess I was too stone cold sober for this to click for me
Decent album, quite like Beck
Overrated Beck. Critics and award givers missed the “Mellow Gold” boat and wanted to reward Beck. “Mellow Gold” is a much better album with a cohesive sound. This is a transition album with lots of experimentation. Not bad, just kind of average and all over the place. I would “Mellow Gold”, “Colors”, “Sea Change” and “Midnite Vultures” on as stronger albums well before a-ok “Odelay.”
Ok. I guess. There's a couple songs that are still somewhat known. Saw Beck live, and his acoustic stuff is much better. 3 stars.
Starts hard. Nice. Some songs are experimental in a good way, others in a not so good way. Novacane is hard on the ears.
Very good
Pretty good.
Favorite Track: Devils Haircut
Solid Beck album but probably not my favorite. His lyrics get a bit redundant but the instrumental experimentation from track to track is ear-grabbing. The tempo is consistent which is good but it's a little too upbeat for my liking.
This is very different from the first Beck album on here (Sea Change, #182). That one was great, but a major downer. This one is from eight years earlier, and it's much more upbeat. This is kind of an interesting album, it feels pretty hard to pin down a genre. It's kind of rock-y at times, but also lots of hip hop and electronic music elements, plus lots of sampling. I don't hate this album or anything, it's definitely an interesting listen. For some reason I just can't quite shake the feeling that it hasn't aged very well though. This seems to have gotten pretty significant acclaim at the time, but I don't think it's quite doing it for me. I think it might be the '90s hip hop elements that feel a bit dated now, plus the rap-rock thing that might have been a bit more novel at the time but is a bit played out at this point. At times he also slows it down and gets a bit more folk-y, and honestly I think I like that more. It's likely more related to my music taste than anything, but he does have pretty good range. Anyway, I'm glad I heard this and there's some solid songs on here, but I don't see myself coming back to this really. I do respect artists taking some chances though, and it feels like Beck did that here. Favorite song: Ramshackle Other: Devils Haircut, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Sissyneck 1/13/25
Fun but dated, esp the "noisy" tracks.
Two cool songs but the rest are just meh.
This is an interesting mix of genres. Unfortunately interesting doesn’t necessarily equate to enjoyable. This is just a bit too weird for me. Still, some good bits.
i feel like 3 beck albums on this list is excessive
Favoute song - devil's haircut
I moved.
This album didn’t do a whole lot for me, it was very noisy - ironically. Some of the noises were nice and tricked me into thinking the overall tone of the album was going to change, but it always came back to the same surf grunge that has its place but is not with me. I will say that it took me Oceanside immediately. I could almost hear skateboarders, palm trees in the wind, tires squealing in the background and feel the heat radiating off of a West Coast asphalt. Very funky and good beats, I like the attitude, the energy, and the complexity of this album… But would not be my go to to get in touch with myself. It might be something about my 13-year-old self would be VERY into. That being said, the quality was good enough that I would be willing to explore more of Beck’s music to find my personal hidden gems. Overall: good vibes, musically talented, hidden innuendos, and various moods to appreciate for the casual, grunge loving listener.
cool
Trippy. I knew a few songs on this album. The songs resonate more when the hook is really good. It seems this would be better if you were tripping. Good album.
First listen. Ok. Not quite my cup of tea.
It was okay. Some tracks were great but I have always felt like this album was overhyped.
Favourites: Devils Haircut, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Sissyneck
Nice album...
There's some decent songs here but it's clear his approach needed more work 2.5*
I loved one song and appreciate the other - such yalent
i knew nothing about this album before hearing it. i assumed it’d be a country album and i’m glad it wasn’t. beck is a person who just makes cool music, idk why i don’t get into it more. great album i love how its kinda experimental, it makes it unique. highlights: devils haircut novacane minus
Some great tracks on here, but also a bit of Beck being Beck.
Pretty solid album for me. Some nice songs but nothing really stood out to me. Overall it was fine
Why on earth does he keep trying to rap. He shouldn't. Ever. Ruins many a good song on this album.
7/10
Beck's output gets better as he ages, but this is still an early one . Not much else sounded like this back then, although i can see how new listeners would be nonplussed. best tracks: jack ass , new pollution. 3.5
A very good well produced album. A little on the long side but I enjoyed it
I don't get it I guess. He try to be innovative and strange, but it doesn't work well resulting boring. Some songs are cool, but I wouldn't relisten this album
Lovely background music. No single tune grabbed me to make me want to repeat.
Better than Guero!
Pretty good.
Typical Beck fare. Has the futurama song on the album but it’s a good easy listening jam for a chilled morning
Mostly good. 3/5
Lil - 7 Eva - 4
Experimental, different sounds, 90’s
Yeah this was not my thing. It felt more annoying than anything.
The heck was that??
Never listened to this album before and I really did enjoy it. Some songs I absolutely loved but others I just couldn’t get into. Spanned so many genres which was impressive but as an album felt a bit inconsistent
It's not awful, and it has some very interesting parts and nice hooks here and there, but on the whole just isn't something that holds my attention. Certainly better than Sea Change, but I think I just don't like Beck.
I tried liking this, I really did
Not my favorite Beck
This album was fun. Def not my favorite but I enjoyed it. Some people talk about Beck like a guitar god and I'm not sure about that. There are fun guitar licks and parts and it's very good, but this album didn't have me go that far. Anyway, I did enjoy this album. I'm definitely willing to try more Beck. However, what the fuck was "Computer Rock." I hate ending albums with songs like that lolol Liked Songs: "Devils Haircut" , "Hotwax" , "Lord Only Knows" , "Novacane" , "Where It's At" , "Minus" , "Readymade" , "Ramshackle"
Ei lain huono, pitäisi kuunnella uudelleen. Yhden kerran perusteella 3/5.
Listened to some later Beck stuff lately and he's fundamentally the same musician as always, he can write a catchy riff and beat, uses a lot of fun samples. It's not something I'd want to listen to a lot, but a beck song now and then is nice
Probably 3.5 stars. Beck is good at expressing the mood of the country.
Was ok, didn’t wow me
Nothing screams 90s louder than Beck. Never got into him.
Beck is Beck. I do like how he plays with genres, but I never seek out his music and it never really sticks with me. I don't think this will be an exception.
Similar thoughts to the previous Beck album, probably needs a few more listens to appreciate. Generally it was very noisy. Devils Haircut is huge 3.5/5
Do you know I’d forgotten all about this album! I used to listen to this all the time way back when. Very clever, very musical and very enjoyable, thanks for the reminder!
It was a long time ago. I don't remember it, but it was probably good.
I thought I knew Beck based on some of the songs that were released and played on the radio that really doesn’t capture his weird, eclectic style. An enjoyable listen.
Not bad, not something to listen to often, but for once it was a nice record
Wowwww this album is all over the place. Hate and love the album but I'm not sure which side I'm on. The mix is amazing on this album but annoyingly amazing? I don't know. Would have picked 2 stars but went for 3 because it's so unique.
Some fun moments and some singles I loved, but felt quite all over the place as a whole album. Possibly didn’t have the optimal listening situation today though.
I definitely am a bigger fan of other Beck albums, but nonetheless a cool album if not a little chaotic!
3/5. I don't think I really have an issue with this album, and the songs are good but there is a weird sense I get from listening to Beck in general. Nothing to do with the guy, just a vibe like my ears don't like it when I can agree it is very good. Opinions are allowed of course, and my opinion is that I don't like the album even though I do enjoy the listening experience. It's not quite pretention but it's not authentic either. The songs are well-written and unique and the genre changes are wonderful, love that. Just don't think I like the album though, just the feeling. It's getting a 3 because I can't move it either way honestly. Best Song: Devil's Haircut, Lord Only Knows, Where It's At
A unique, retro sound from a unique guy. Beck always keeps things interesting and original. I like Devil's Haircut and especially New Pollution. I was never a big fan of Where It's At.
Solid 3.7
Not terrible, but not something I’d come back to and listen to again. Made the mistake of listening with AirPods in—the instrumentals are a bit screechy and tough on the ear that way. Probably better on just a regular speaker.
# 346 : Good album, I like it, it has a hit or two. Would not buy this, but would listen again. Favourite track ; Devils Haircut
Lyrically meh sonically yeah
Nice variety
I’ve always somewhat liked Beck. This album sounds like what Kid Rock would be if he were less trashy. For some reason, that realization makes me like Beck a little less.
Might be tempted to go 3.5* if it were an option. Enough stuff I don't like on this album, though, to prevent 4*. Some noisy nonsense here and there. I like Beck, but I don't LIKE like Beck.
The best of Beck's joke albums.
I’ve always liked and enjoyed a lot of Beck’s more well known songs, and I liked Mellow Gold when it came out. Yet after that album I never really listened to any of his releases in full. So Odelay is my first one I’ve checked out from start to finish since Mellow Gold. I’ll be honest, this album started off great, but quickly descends into a bit of chaos in regards to direction. I’d be enjoying a song, and then I would find myself becoming downright annoyed by the next, or from some of the sound effects used. The excitement I had when this pick popped up is gone, and I’m left with disappointment. 2.5 / 5
I’m not super into Beck, but I do recognize the appeal behind his melding of genres (i.e. rock, folk, hip-hop, etc.). I have no strong feelings toward this record. It do be what it be. Favorite track: Where It's At
Always liked beck, this is weird and fun
I never really got into Beck at the time so was intrigued to see if the passing of time would have changed my opinion. I thought this was alright but not spectacular.

Mellow Gold was a much better album and meant a lot more to me than this album. Just doesn't suck me in the way the other album did. 3.5
I own this album and have no memory of listening to it, which is a very bad sign. A re-listen reminds me why: while singles like "New Pollution" and "Devil's Haircut" pointed to a new, slick 1960s go-go boots stye, Beck is still a very immature artist here, pushing the boundaries of engineering and production in ways that sometimes work and sometimes come across as obnoxious and needlessly provocative. The standout tracks (Devil's Haircut, Where It's At, Jackass, Ramshackle, New Pollution) are simply outstanding, but the rest of the album lacks focus.
Beck is a consistently good songwriter and musician. I’ve owned Odelay since it’s release, and although enjoyable, it’s not something that has gotten much play over the years.
I loved this album when it came out. It was so different than anything else on the alternative landscape. Listening to it now there are a lot of hits but also quite a few misses
Reputation precedes it. Some moments of really good stuff and then some songs that sound more dated now. No doubt influential but nothing I'd be raving about.
Loser is a bit of tune. But not on this album unfortunately. Nothing really standing out to me here, but still nice enough. Simpsons: Yes and a full on guest star in Futurama
Solid 3 album throughout. High 5 was a strange one that stood out, seemed very different to the rest of the album.
When Beck and later this album were popular, I didn't get it. Maybe it was me or the whole Beck / hipster / Alternative thing just ground my gears but I get what he did to music in this period. The 90s were weir man. 3.5/5
This Beck album is decent, but it kind of suffers from having a very late 90's sound in a way that I also didn't like in the late 90's. So even though it has some songs I love, as an album it's kind of just average for me. 3/5
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR (vegan) Artwork: 🐕🧹🪣 Produktion: 🎧😐🆗 Musik: 🤗🤨🤪 Wertung: 🐕🐕🐕/5
Good good album
An enjoyable listen that is bookended by its best songs around a desert of mostly average stuff. 'Where It's At' boasts a large Spotify play count, but I rated it as 3/5. Devil's Haircut, Hotwax, Novacane, Minus, Ramshackle and Diskobox were the songs which illicited the best responses from me. All in all, some decent stuff here which I will revisit.
Interesting but I don't like it quite enough to buy the album.
This is a really cool and laidback album, with no really weak tracks. However, there are no tracks that stand out and scream that they're awesome, so I can't go any higher than a solid 3. Even though there's almost a new genre for every track, I found the album to be surprisingly cohesive, and I enjoyed listening to it. Won't relisten anytime soon, though.
Classic Beck album! Listening to this album felt like I was listening to the radio while driving through SoCal in the 90s. The various melding of styles within the same song was reminiscent of the blurring between radio station signals. Beck’s expansive influences incorporated on this album were ambitious with most landing but a couple misses threw off the flow of the record for me. Stand out Track: Where It’s At
Love his voice
Weird album in a good way when mainstream music was more accessible for interesting genres. Not fantastic in my opinion but a fun listen.
i didnt really like the first half of the album and novacane is one of the worst songs i have ever heard. the second half of the album was really good which surprised me favorite song: High 5 (Rock The Catskills)
solid record. had few great joints but as a album it was not a constant enjoyable listen for me.
Meh.
I think I enjoyed?
Bonkers - liked it.
Just a bit meh really
The mix of genres grew on me over time as I listened to this album, but I did find it a bit grating towards the beginning. My favorite track from this album was "Ramshackle," but ultimately there are other works from Beck which I enjoy more.
While listening I keep thinking, “oh, I bet people who like x would really like this”, or “this reminds me of y”, but then I was thinking about it, and *I* really like x and y, but I never really liked Beck. Hmmm. It’s like all the parts are there but something’s off with the glue that’s holding it together. Yes, Beck, you are weak glue.
I understand the hype (genre bending!) but can’t really enjoy Beck on an emotional level.
The only beck album you need. Loser is one of the great singles of the pop era and this album is pretty solid. So between them you have the essential listening for Beck if you’re a casual fan or are unaware and are looking to find out about him. You can of course if you like go to the rest of his work. And I enjoy it. I hope you do too. But with only 1001 albums this is the one.
I have this cd but, having played it through a few times lately, I realised that really there are only 3 tracks here that I was really familiar with : Devil’s Haircut, a great track that I think I knew from seeing the clip on Rage; The New Pollution, also probably from the clip on Rage; & Where It’s At, which I always loved because of the Mantronix sample from their Needle To The Groove single. The 2 other tracks that I really enjoyed from finally listening to the whole album are Jack-Ass - & I didn’t even realise until I saw on Wiki that, musically, it’s based on Them’s version of Dylan’s It’s All Over Now Baby Blue; & Sissyneck, a wonderful country piss-take - I like any song that mentions “good old boys”. Then I find that these are the five singles released from the album. How appropriate. And it is a really good album.
Devils Haircut I was digging it until the last 15-20seconds And that goes for the screeching thing throughout some of the songs. 3 stars

So every time I hear Beck I am reminded of the song Heartbeat on Mike Watt's "Ball-Hog or Tugboat" Album. At the end of the song it has an answering machine message from Hanna stating why she did not want to be on the record(sometimes she claims it was an art piece, sometimes she is more ambiguous). Here is is... "Hello. Mr. Watt. This is Kathleen Hanna returning your phone call. Bout 3:45 on Monday and it's about that fuckin record that you asked me to do something for. And I guess I'm responding to that now cuz I have a few minutes. And I just wanted to tell you...uh, I have a friend who was raped by, fucked by, whatever you wanna fuckin call it by this guy on your record, gonna be on your record. He's a big rockstar. Yeah when he was 27 and she was 13 he was a big rockstar too. And uh, I don't know if the phrase "power imbalance" means anything to you. But uh, I'm just not so sure I wanna be included in your little white rock boy fuckin hall of shame here, you know? I'm just like "Do I wanna be sandwiched in between some of these guys that are just doing the whole, like, big-white-baby-with-an-ego-problem thing?" I mean, [sighs] get over it! It's so boring. It's like, a lot of these guys should just fuckin quit music and become lifeguards at like Wild Waves or some shit. So they can just like get their fucking, you know, anger management thing going. They can just get their power trips out on the kids, they can just do the whole thing. Maybe they'd be actually saving someone's life. "Hey, don't run by the pool. No cutoffs." You know? That's what I hear when I hear some of this you know music by a lot of these fuckin guys, you know? And I mean, I guess what I'm saying is "I'm just too cool... to be on your fuckin record." You know? It's like I really don't wanna perpetuate or be included in a thing where it's just a bunch of like, I don't know, just like this new. The music coming out by guys right now in the sort of like rock world or alternative rock world or used-to-be-punk world or whatever. It's like the whole, "I'm a straight, white, middle class, male, rockstar guy, but I'm so fuckin oppressed." "I'm a loser baby why don't you kill me." [Sigh] Yawn. Like super fuckin yawn. So yeah, I guess what I'm saying is No. No. No. No. I'm not interested. No. I don't wanna be on your fuckin record. No. But ummm. Mr. Watt. Dude. Babe. Sir. Uh, you need to get me my fuckin Annie soundtrack back like soon cuz you've had it forever and I know you haven't even fuckin listened to it yet. Just like, gimme a call and tell me when that's going to happen. And ummm. I'll talk to you then. Bye." So, that machine message always plays through my mind whenever I hear Beck. I really enjoy 'Devil's Haircut' from this album...but all that I hear is..."I'm a straight, white, middle class, male, rockstar guy, but I'm so fuckin oppressed." "I'm a loser baby why don't you kill me." [Sigh] Yawn. Like super fuckin yawn."
Beck has a low ceiling, but he's reliable. This album was fun, albeit a LOT of Beck at once.
This was a very uneven album, but full of creativity and flair. There were some songs I hated, some songs I really enjoyed, and I think I recognized one or two of them. I can’t say I’d recommend this album to anyone, however, and I know I won’t listen to it again.
Kind of like Sheryl Crow but with more gumption in some songs. Kind of like the Beastie Boys with less gumption in others. There are some truly great songs on here, but not the best I've heard from Beck. Also, some stuff I genuinely want to skip.
I like Beck, but this definitely isn't my favorite Beck album.
I don't even know what genre it was supposed to be.
2 - 3 ok Songs, der Rest zu Rap-ig oder zu chaotisch. ***
3.5/5
I feel I should appreciate Beck more than I do. That said, the beats on this album are SICK in the fullest and best sense.
Classic example of an alternative album from the 90s. Iconic singles, lots of experimentation, a couple of great songs, and some fillers.
This felt like listening to a mix tape. Nothing really grabbed me, and in general Beck suffers from having heard too much of him as a teen
For anyone not there, this is what the 90s sounded like. Not music in the 90s per say, that was grunge and all of that but literally the 90s sounded like this. These sounds were just going on in the 90s plus maybe some dial up internet noises.
I mean, I can appreciate the diversity in genres and how nicely they work together on a Beck album. Nothing ever feels overly forced, but it doesn't always feel like it adds to a song either. The lyrics feel like they're trying to be more important that they really are, which can take away from a song...also, we get it, you know what a drum break is.
1. devilz - 1.5 2. uuaz - 1.5 3. lord - 1 4. pollution - 1.5 5. derelict - 1 6. novacane - 1.5 7. at - 3 8. minuz - 1 9. neck - 1.5 10. ready - 2 11. five - 1 12. ramzhackle - 1
Beck is a talented musician but there is something about his music that makes it all very dated in a way. He is one of the few who really mastered using rapping with 'serious' music. But this album shows the barriers of this approach. What sounded great in 1996 just feels even annoying nearly 30 years later.
This was definitely more in line with what I listen to. I appreciated aot of the weirder sounds in the songs. And I have heard of Beck before so I thought I'd like this more than I did. Maybe I need another listen but there's nothing here that stood out to me.
Superb moments here and happy memories.
3.5
Mixed feelings about this album, which doesn't seem to hold together too well. The opener, Devil's Haircut, has a riff that I swear is straight from The Seeds. And I liked it. Other tracks seem to be informed more by hip hop standard rapping rhythm, which I find a bit limiting. It's a nice enough album, with a few highlights, but I think it's not a great album.
Beck? Nie gehört! Kann man anhören.
When this album came out, it was ahead of its time. Unfortunately, I’m listening to it 30 years later, so it feels behind my current time.
Många Beck har det blivit. Det här är ju hans bästa och den enda som egentligen hör hemma på den här listan.
Just kind of alright. 3/5
Decent, not quite in the mood for it but not bad at all
Beck's main big boy release is a curious attention jump from sensual terminally 90s quaintness to brutish roughness, and then back and forth between those two.
Not the Beck I'm used to (that being Jeff). Decent record, but not fantastic. Solid.
Steve Hogarth’s hero is mine too now. Wow.
This definitely has a sound. The beats were good, brings nostalgia and style. Only thing missing for me was like…I can’t explain it but the substance?
Not bad, but the weird noises made me skip some songs.
Ein wenige seltsame Übergänge. Sonst ok
Lässig, crossover, experimental. Interessant zu hören, dann reicht aber. 2,8
Fun album
Hand me the Becktionary. No, the rhyming Becktionary.
Not a big fan but some good songs
I really loved Beck growing up, and still have time for most of what he does. HOWEVER. The more music a guy hears in life, I think, the more inclined he is to think “Oh, Beck was just doing his own take on this artist” every once in a while. For example, my favourite Beck album is Midnite Vultures. The other day I listened to Prince’s Sign O The Times, and realized “Oh, Beck was (mostly) just doing Prince”. It doesn’t make the Beck album worse, but it does give it something to directly compare it to, maybe not helpfully. Anyway this one is good. Midnite Vultures is probably still my favourite. I wonder if Sea Change is on here.
Like most 90s kids I owned this CD but i'm probably only familiar with half of it at best. Listening was a trip down memory lane and much of this still really holds up, but some of it is experimental and overall forgettable. I still enjoyed the songs I remember from the 90s and rediscovered a couple more that were largely forgotten. I wouldn't rush out and buy it again though. Favs : Where It's At, Devil's Haircut Surprise Favs : Minus, Ramshackle
Beck is one of those artists that I've never really liked his radio hits but when you listen to the full album, have a way better appreciation for the musician he is.
Lots of variety and experimentation, Beck is terrific especially as a one man crew. A bunch of these songs now-days feel contemporary with how forward he was with his work. 3.4
A good album for sure! Is it great? I don’t think so but a pleasant enough experience listening. Couple of cracking tunes on there, but I’ve heard this album a few times and the telling fact of all this is that I have never bought it.
Did not catch my attention but also was not hard to listen to
First thought: I don't recognize any of these titles. Second thought (upon hitting play): oooh I know Devil's haircut! I guess Beck is just always in my subconscious. I don't love Beck's (lack of) singing, but his instrumentals are very catchy. Enjoyed about half the album, 3*. Highlights: devil's haircut, the new pollution, where it's at
Álbum bastante experimental, muy entretenido para escuchar. Me gustó, lo volvería a escuchar
Experimental. Un poco de naftalina noventosa.
It’s fine. Beck just annoys me after a bit.
I wish I liked Beck more, but I mostly respect him.
Not a huge Beck fan but I do respect his style of music. Definitely like the hits and some of the deeps.
Didn't really feel it and I just coludn't come to like it in the end.
Meh
We get it Beck, you ARE a little stinker.
B- Devils Haircut 3 Hotwax 3 Lord Only Knows 4 The New Pollution 4 Derelict 3 Novacane 3 Jack-Ass 3 Where It's At 3 Minus 4 Sissyneck 4 Readymade 3 High 5 (Rock The Catskills) 3 Ramshackle 4 Computer Rock 3 I like Ramona better!!
Two Turntables and a microphone... but still would listen to a different album. Where It's At is a solid track and I like some of the remix versions. The other songs are alright but some of the lyrics are so incredibly goofy and just seem like a stream of consciousness /weird lyrics for the sake of being weird. Like placeholder lyrics almost but just... kept them in. Not my favorite but still somewhat interesting.
He’s done better
Never start an album with your best track, only one way to go from there! I quite like Beck but somehow it all sounds a bit gimmicky.
Mixed bag. Cool mostly, weird in places and not necessarily in an enjoyable way. I like his voice. Favourite track: Jack-Ass
Love how different Beck's sound was compared to other bands during the late 90's.
Thought this was fine, at times better than fine. Equally quite forgettable
An okay album, not great Top tracks: Devils Haircut, High 5 (Rock The Catskills), Ramshackle
It’s American Gorillaz! Same sort of lofi drum loop sampling with some twangy vocal noodling at its best, waffles out a little too long at its worst towards the end. Might hit a lot harder smoking weed on a porch in the middle of nowhere
3 unique both good and bad
Devil's haircut has indeed been in my mind since it first came out, in a section that age and alcohol cannot rot. However never listened to the album. It's some decent stuff, but didn't spark any major connection for me.
Too much of certain songs on this album could certainly contribute to a migraine headache
A rather eclectic album, some great songs but a fair few that didn’t really do it for me.
I had this album as a teenager. Always thought it was just ok. After relistening, I still think that. Some good sounds and great production though.
Some songs I love, but as a collection, if I had to use a single word, it would be discordant.
Ok album. Was not really in the mood for it today
Great Album! It has it's highs and downs. But overall really great and experimental Album. Such an experimental album is really refreshing to hear now and then.
A couple good songs but otherwise decent.
For an album that seems to pride itself in its lack of consistency, Odelay features consistently good musical ideas that are punctuated by ear splitting digital noises and low-fidelity screaming. I wouldn’t play this one outside of my headphones unless I was looking to turn some heads. 5/10.
This album has some major stinkers, but also holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I like it quite a bit overall
Beyond the singles this was actively terrible.
There are some quite nice things on this. But as an album it’s just too diverse and doesn’t hang together in any real way. Maybe if I were younger and had listened to it a lot in my teens I’d love it. I’m not and I don’t. Naturally it’s rather too long as well, but that’s the CD era for you.
Something was just a little missing for me, as if the author had cut out or missed something, without rap it would be awesome. 3/5
omg his little noises.
It's OK. Some songs are better than others
I’m not a huge Beck fan, but went into this album with an open mind. Wasn’t a fan of the megaphone vocals, but overall was not as terrible as I thought it would be.
I liked Beck back in the day, and saw him put on an awesome live show in the late 1990s. But I have to say, this album didn't do much for me nearly three decades later. Some cool beats and catchy sounds, but the nonsensical lyrics and themes lost me in middle age.
Интересное смешение стилей. При этом альбом довольно ровный, без каких-то пик. Это такой чиловый альбом, который мне видится скорее бэкграунд музыкой на готовку ужина в приглушенном свете. Лучшая песня - Ramshackle.
Good parts Standout songs: Novacane Derelict
I can tell this album was probably really cool at the time, and some people probably still like it, but it's just not for me. I don't like the sound of Beck's voice. Most of the lyrics I don't know what the H he's talking about. "Blow back derelict wind, lay my soul in the fallow field," what does that even mean? Some songs sounded good. "Novacane" had some good production elements. "Minus" sounds cool. "Where It's At" is a WHACK track, I did not enjoy it. This is an early Beck album, so it probably gets better from here. 2.75 stars
me sorprendió bastante
David Foster Wallace ruined an entire generation of middle-class white men. But at least this has a groove that prevents it from ever becoming as annoying as it sounds like it would be on paper.
It's a cool album, I don't personally find it essential but it is worth note
3.4/5 Best Track: Where It's At - Album Version W/Intro
And I really did like it a lot however it’s not the best album. Some of the songs sound pretty cool and others sound a little bit dated at this point. A lot of the music sounds the same and again although I do like sex music this is not my very favorite CD or album. 3.5/5
It has some hits, but I don’t love it.
I like Guero a lot better.
favourite song: readymade really enjoyed some of the songs here, not so much some of the others. very hit and miss which makes it hard to rate, torn between 3 and four stars really.
3-
Alt country stuff is good. A bit too noisy for my liking at times.
I am finding more and more that interesting albums from the 90/00’s feel played out in the 2020s but think it’s because they have been rung out and squeezed of all novelty by the imitators.
Not as cool as Guero
Feels very experimental but not in a good way. Like he didn't have a direction in mind and just threw in random stuff to see what sticks. Sometimes I was confused whether I'm still listening to the same album Still, not bad either, there's a lot that I liked, but mostly elements, not full songs. Best song: Derelict
interesting on the upper end of 3s
favourite: lord only knows, novacane least favourite: derelict it's fine, some of the songs are annoying it's too long too mayb 6-7/10
It's cool to come to terms with some of these albums that I've heard, or at least their hits, when they came out: I guess I've actually never liked Beck after all (90ies Beck. I don't know post 2000 Beck yet, outside of his Record Club project). Slacker music with aimless ADHD that's too eccentric for its own good. Or ~cartoony. Country Jangle Pop but also Beastie Boys. Like liquorice but icecream. It all seems a bit forced. Or something, I dunno. Whatever my problem with it is, for now I can definitely say that this is crap music to have my early morning coffee to. [...] A few hours later it sits better with me but I can't say that things have improved dramatically. I respect this album, for what it was in its time, but that's about it. Honorable mentions: Minus and Ramshackle.
Terwijl deze productie destijds echt revolutionair in de alternative rock scene was, moet ik zeggen that it didn't age very well. 7/10 Highlights: Jack-Ass Where It's At The New Pollution
👍🏻
It's good, but not amazing. Still really good.
Lot of mixed things inside
Pretty honky but good in places
Beck never really did anything for me, and this is no different. But I do recognise the pattern emerging from what I've listened to do far, and that's all of the albums have stellar production, engineering and mixing.
Groovy sound, but I have no idea what the lyrics are talking about. Not a big fan of the feedback noises.
It was ok. Nonsense lyrics though
Lots of different music sounds. Felt a little like schizojazz. I liked the first half of the album better.
Feel like I've been pretty lukewarm on Beck for all of my music listening lifetime and despite the acclaim for this album, my opinion just hasn't been swayed. There's a lot to be intrigued by here, "Devils Haircut" is a banger, full-stop, but when this album settles into its sort of slacker rock groove this becomes quite boring to me and I start to become disinterested. "Derelict" is interesting, the production on much of this is great, a lot of unexpected samples, textures, and sounds, but again it's probably my own issue that this just doesn't actually move me or interest me all that much. Plus, I might be in the minority with this opinion, but I find "Where It's At" to be extremely corny despite the really nice warm production.
Very good album.. I personally think better than his later stuff.
This is one of those albums that could have only happened in the 90's. That weird period when music labels just threw everything at the wall to see what would stick. A lot of it failed and was soon forgotten, but what worked really worked, giving us gems like this.
2.93 per track. Hit or miss tracks for sure
First time listen all the way through, not bad. Very "new" when debuted but only enjoy the hit"Where it's at" and "Ramshackle. I like his later albums "Sea Change" and " Guero" a bit more - but for anyone he is a creative genius!
3.5 stars; better than the other Beck album I've gotten (Guero), but all the interesting ideas are in the first half of the record.
Simple album. Most songs are forgettable and nothing too special. Wasn't a bad listen or too great of one just between ok and good. Jackass and ramshackle are probably my favourites. 3 stars.
First time hearing Beck outside Loser. Well, I don't really like his laid back, disinterested singing style. Drum beats were OK. I didn't hate anything. The keyboard in this sounded exactly like the keyboard used in the music for Napoleon Dynamite. Compare Hotfix with Uncle Rico's theme.
Aceitável
Eight days after Sea Change, we have Odelay, the 3rd Beck on this list; an artist I haven't been motivated to study before this challenge. If one Beck album had to represent his oeuvre it should probably be this one; odd, glitchy, inventive alternative rock/folk/hip hop that it is. It’s definitely from the same funhouse that brought us “Loser”, but with even more experimentation. However, I think this is another album that will grow on me, but I don’t love it at this time. I was so lost in the Dust Brothers’ eclectic production, that I think I appreciate it more than the actual songs at times. The constant shifts in musical direction were often entertaining but sometimes grating- looking at you, feedback in “Hotwax” and jackass in “Jack-Ass”. Also, and I realize this is not a fair criticism, the segues between the country and the electro/rap gave me uncomfortable flashbacks to Devil Without a Cause. The difference between “High 5” here and “Roving Gangster” from that album is that I’m having more fun with the former, but it IS still country rap to my ears. 3.5 HL: “Where It’s At”, “The New Pollution”, “Devils Haircut”, “Lord Only Knows”
A little raw for what I was feeling.
