Reviews (page 7 of 7)
full respect to everyone involved but this just isn’t me at all, for someone else it’s a 5 but for me a 1
This is annoying. Sometimes an instrument does something I like, but it's too repetitive. The singing isn't great. Just not worth ever listening to again.
I listened to the first couple songs and that was it. So strange
Did not enjoy this
Not a fan. The voice is a little irritating
I don't understand what is happening. Some talent there for sure, but I can't appreciate it.
Couldn't understand a word
This was a tough listen. The wailing was a bit grating.
1 - TERRIBLE
Instrumentalt möjligen snudd på godkänt. Men står inte ut med sången.
Har väl egentligen inte lyssnat tillräckligt för att ge ett rättvist omdöme. Men oavsett, det här håller inte. Det händer ju ingenting.
This is not for me. Not even a little, ever, under any circumstances. (ntm.)
An album not to listen to before you die.
Repetitive and very long. So many albums on this list are an hour long for no reason. This could have been 30 mins shorter. I guess it would be good for background music while doing some house chores, but it’s not exactly engaging enough to sit with and pay attention to.
Too long and too same
Nope. Could not do it. I dig world music and that's the whole reason I got into this project, but this felt like a weird mix of Indian and troubadour music. I couldn't even use it for background music. My rating: 1/5 bongos
2/10
Nö!
I don’t appreciate music enough I guess to care about this.
really not my style
Sounded unique since its not Western music. Not bad at all but not my taste.
Lyssnade inte klart. Förmodligen värd ett högre betyg, men inte idag.
Ugh... some of the world music on the list has been interesting. This one I was kinda sick of by the third track, and there was still 40 mins of the same exact thing coming up. Not a fan
Too slow, too long, too meandering. Nothing grabbed my interest on this album the way that it did on Youssou N’Dour’s, other than a few nice moments of sweet guitar work. Otherwise utterly forgettable. Lam Tooro (2/10) Loodo (3/10) Muudo Hormo (3/10) Salminanam (4/10) Maacina Tooro (3/10) Djam Leelii (3/10) Bibbe Leydy (3/10) Sehilam (3/10) 3/10
Really not my vibe, I do like a lot of the guitar work, but I can’t see myself listening to this anytime again. Just a little bit too much for me to deal with, one star.
NO.
Not my cup of tea.
Demasiado étnico para mí y no entiendo nada
I don't have any reference for this music. Maybe this is the best example of this genre. I just didn't like it. All the songs felt the same and I was happy when it was over.
Nu har det varit många i rad jag tyckt varit tråkiga. Det är inget DRAG!
Not my style of music,
Not for me
AGAIN. NOT MY VIBE.
My ear isn't nuanced enough to really differentiate many of these tracks. "Salminanam" felt like a desperado cowboy western track.
👎
Couldn’t do it
There were some good songs in this but it mostly just dragged on and on for me. Not one i will be revisiting
Really really not for me
Ota mikä tahansa biisi, kuuntele minuutti, skippaa eteenpäin kolmisen minuuttia ja testaa, onko mikään muttunut. Levyllä on muutama kiinnostava riffi (esim. Maacina Tooro), mutta sen "moody" tunnelma ei täysin uppoa itselleni. 1,5

Ikke for mig
This is #day101 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... you must be kidding me. Another album? Precisely a week ago, I got Lam Toro, and now this. As soon as those vocals kick in, I'm like, goddammit. The first song on this album is where it ends for me. I get to think that this list was made by folks who don't have a clue about music. Otherwise, why MUST I listen to this? It's another 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day102.
I didn't think I would like this and wasn't expecting much from it. I was correct, and I should have probably done something better with the time I spent listening to this
No thank you, sorry Baaba
Nothing in it for me. Not my Djam.
To preface, I only listened to the original eight track sequence without the four additional tracks. I’ll be honest, not sure why this album is included on this list. Obviously I’m not familiar with this type of music, nor know the language the lyrics are in. However, I’m not sure how much the lyrics would really do to improve the quality of the songs. While the musicianship is admirable, these all feel more like jam sessions that showcase the individual talents more than a cohesive unit. The songs don’t progress or deviate from their main motifs or structure. I wouldn’t have even known about this album if not for this exercise.
This was brutal to listen to not knowing the language that they were speaking in combined with the instrumentals that were just the same chord progression over and over again. It all felt like psychosis to my western music adjusted brain
Not my jam, but interesting African music
Hot Garbage
For me, it takes a pretty special record to still be connecting with it despite a language barrier. Over an hour of paced, cyclical African folk jams hasn't done it for me.
Musically it’s “fine” nothing special at all, but not offensive. But the vocals made it an unenjoyable listen.
Not sure when I’d listen to this
I tried with this, but i just hate his voice. Nasal bleating just isn’t pleasant to me. After maybe 2/3 I realised I didn’t have to subject myself to it and put Graceland on instead. I could maybe go 2 stars for the guitar guy, but fuck it, welcome to the 1 star club.
Not something I find enjoyable.
Artiste inconnu. Morceaux terriblement longs et répétitifs. Je ne suis pas allé au bout. =>1/5
Inaguantable, pude escuchar 2 temas
1/10, чзх
I am sure this is considered to be very masterful music but it just ain’t my jam.
Lame
Interesting but hard to connect to. The sparse instrumentals don't really give me a ton to latch onto especially when I can't understand the lyrics.
Did not enjoy the vocal style of this
Unter der Rubrik Weltmusik sicherlich hörenswert, ist nicht meine Musik
No. Just no
I went through a range of emotions in this. Initially intrigued.. the guitar playing is relaxing. Then bored because the songs all seem to blend together. Finally irritated because the vocals are annoying, and it's a very long album. If an album is irritating by the end then it's probably gotta be 1*
What an awful racket. Truly, truly awful. No thanyou very much - not sure how this rvrn got on the list.
This album sucks. I honestly tried, but this doesn’t have the heart and excitement of a Fela Kuti outing. And that has become my gold standard for international records. Sorry Baaba, but we’re just not compatible, you and I.
It's perfectly listenable, I understand about the same amount of lyrics as when I listen to music in English, but it still didn't work for me. Neither as background music - too annoying for that, nor as regular music - too repetitive. And yes, I would still prefer to have more albums like this on the list
Boring African guitar music with whiny voice
im darth maul
This list needs more anglo centrism.
Can't dig this at all
Hmmm… Like a bit of this music…
talented musician, but not my cup of tea
I feel like saying “this album is unlistenable” is pretty racist because I don’t understand a damn word😂 but I did not listen through every song nor will I ever😆 I do love Baaba Maal when he’s featured on Mumford and sons tho!
Noise.
sorry i didn’t like it
Pleasant enough, but overall boring. Not my style.
Dislike. I’ve never really liked foreign language songs because I generally want to be able to understand the lyrics. Aside from that it still wasn’t my style of music.
This is um…….interesting
Beyond bad. ZERO STARS
Perfectly listenable, although I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to it
1.5/5
Robert Christgau describes this album as “background music with soul”. Forgive me, but I’d prefer soulless main character theme songs.
Yeah didn’t quite understand this one. Alright welp moving on. 1.0/10
Incredibly difficult listen. In my opinion, it's pretty ridiculous to include albums like this, that fit outside the constructs of western music on a list like this. I think if it were a list of songs - it would be much more appropriate. But for a listener growing up with an ethnocentric (using my anthropology classes here) view of pop music, it's ridiculous to expect someone to connect with over an hours worth of music such as this. I have incredibly limited knowledge of West Africa and their music, don't understand the language, and overall lack any context whatsoever of the content of this album. To try and look at this record in a positive light, I will say that it is amusing to me that I can confidently say I'm "familiar with" a West African record from the 80s, and will now recognize the name Baaba Maal. But with all that being said, a song or two would have sufficed. I don't need 80 minutes of material for that to be true.
Other than being “different” I cannot understand why this album is here
Not a fan
How anyone can give this sort of shit 5* is beyond me but I imagine it makes them feel more virtuous than the average person.
Oh, more crappy "world music" Have fun pretending that this is good. Be sure to bring this up at your next vegan pot luck fundraiser for some fruity cause. I'm sure you'll be a hit and everyone will think you're so worldly and wonderful.
Not really my kind of music
not gonna happen
Don't what to expect here... Sounds like experimental guitar. Some Senegalese singing. Hmmm... We'll see how long I can last with this one. At times it reminds me of this song from The Natural Born Killers. Taboo. Yeah couldn't hang. Sorry Baaba and Mansour
Not my cup of tea
Sorry, can't listen to this.
1.5
No.
Didnt like the vocal performance and the instrumentals were dull
I couldn't listen to this. It was too depressing and monotone
No, absolutely not for me in any way, not even for a review..... aww c'mon, don't be a dick... 1001 Albums has said this is good and to review it.... trust them, its gonna be awesome? So, dare I listen to this... OK I'll give it a go.... I got a quarter of the first track and it was just too much for my wee head to endure. Nothing against the artist or his native origins that influence the sounds he creates, but it just not something I'd ever want to listen to. OK, maybe I'm being harsh, let's go through the rest of them and sure I can skip if it's not a great track..... ... hold on a minute, they're all the bloody same.... a few strums of sitar sounding instrument and then mournful wailing because his granny's cat died ..... no, this one's defo not for me.
Not my thing ‘at all’. Two chords and wailing.
I can appreciate this type of music in the right setting, but it’s not something I’d put in to just listen to. The first song is a snoozer, and should have been replaced by the second song as a way to draw listeners in. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: second one? Worst Song: first one
I will never get some of these days back
.... this might be the first non-english vocals album where I actively don't like the vocals and it's absolutely nothing to do with the language (i might prefer it) but the voice. The reedy piercing tone of the voice isn't smoothing this music out at all - there's an attack to his vocals that I'm just not attuned to and it gets worse song by song.... ...and/but the music isn't my style either - from the initial "Lam Tooro" which is terribly repetitive and doesn't add enough along the way, it doesn't really progress much at all beyond that ... in fact.... I don't know what I was expecting but this acts as more of an extremely weak 2-person attempt at new-agey type background music. Slow it down by about 1/4 tempo, eliminate the vocals, and this is what I might expect to hear at a low volume while getting a massage. Of which I'd consider walking out of. I feel kinda terrible giving this such a low mark as I'll usually give a 2 to something that's just not my taste but this is ... bad. 2/10 1 star.
Zzzzz
Did not like
Not for me. DNF
Ugh, no. Just absolute no from me. Starting to get a bit sick of the project - too much world music not enough popular music
Without trying to sound like a complete xenophobe, I don't need these foreign language albums on a 1001 albums to listen to list...
Could not make head or tail of this
Verschrikkelijk saai en eentonig
so when the creator of this list did his first draft they got to a point where they were like yeah i'm done, however i just need a bit more world music. so they went to their local HMV, popped over to the world music section and just grabbed whatever was in the bargain bin. this is such generic 'world music'. its at home being discussed by middle class yoghurt weavers at their dinner parties.
Did you know? Djam Leelii was named after an ancient ham merchant. Ham became known as Djam after during the Great Ham Wars of 1033, during which many great ham warriors were killed and eaten by pigs.
Honestly at first this album seemed fine but it slowly got more and more annoying. Obviously I can't understand any of it, but it just seemed like the same guitar combo thing + nasally singing for well over an hour. It literally was annoying to listen to eventually. It felt like I was in a loop listening to the same not very interesting song
New artist. After one song...bye
Nisan na ovo navikla
dig the guitar but not my cup of tea.
not very good
Nope
Musically melodic and interesting, however the droning, nasal, whiney, indiscernible lyrics made this nearly unlistenable.
I'm sure this is an important album, but it's simply not for me
Wasn’t my favorite
DNF, it starts off alright with the instrumentals, then the vocal come in and they're grating and repetitive, then you notice the music won't change for the entirety of the song and you wonder what's the point
Like the guitars, vocals not grabbing me
Baad
Not my jam
Well... I'm sure this is great if you're into it but really not for me. The repetition in the songs made me feel ill!
There's probably a lot of meaning behind this, but I don't understand the lyrics. Comparing this to mariachi, even though I don't understand that, enjoy it more. Either way, I will not likely listen to this again.
Not my fav
Not for me.
