Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Totally not my thing, but somehow not too bad.

I could listen to the music all day but those vocals go right to my nervous system like glass shards and needles.

I liked some of the guitar work, but I didn't connect with it at all. I didn't look for the skip button so that has to count for something, I guess.

This was pretty hard to rate. I liked the intricate guitar work that seemed very easy and relaxed. I still can't get into the genre or sound as a whole.

This one is slightly better than the other Baaba Maal album I listened to, but I still don't like the guys music.

The music isn't bad, although it is extremely repetetive. If it was just instrumental it would be fine background music, but that nasally voice over everything takes away my enjoyment.

I get nothing from this collection of tracks. Simple modal explorations on shitty late-80s sounding guitars. Overall it isn’t unpleasant. But I have no clue why I needed to hear it.

Fine in the falafel store I guess.

I don't really get it

Baaba Maal, we meet again. And so soon. Better than the other album, but I still cannot enjoy his nasal voice.

Not my sort of thing

His voice is very nasal and the music is a little too repetitive for me but it had some very nice moments.

Not something that I would seek out to listen to but I enjoy the vibe of the album.

1. Lam Tooro - 5.5/10 2. Loodo - 4.5/10 3. Muudo Hormo - 5/10 4. Salminanam - 4.5/10 5. Maacina Tooro - 4.5/10 6. Djam Leelii - 7/10 7. Bibbe Leydy - 5/10 8. Sehilam - 6/10 9. Kettodee - 4.5/10 10. Ko Wone Mayo - 4/10 11. Daande Lenol - 4/10 12. Taara - 4/10 4.5/10

Album 747 of 1001 Baaba Maal - Djam Leelii (1989) Rating : 2 / 5 Djam Leelii is a Senegalese musician. While interesting, it wasn't really enjoyable to me.

That was an album.

I wasn't a huge fan at first but this grew on me. Despite not understanding the lyrics I did enjoy the repetitive drum beats. It ended up being soothing. This is not something I am going to probably ever listen to again but I am glad I did.

The music is pretty fun. The vocals I can do without, but what are you gonna do?

Good to have something different, but I found this one a tough listen. It went on far too long and was very repetitive.

Muudo Hormo.

First album here where listening to it felt like homework. I'm not opposed to West African guitar music, I really like the music of Ali Farka Toure, but this was very boring and the singing was very high-pitched and fatiguing. I'm just over half-way through and I might have to bail...

I really like the inclusion of the world music on this list. However it can be really hit or miss for me. This one wasn't quite my thing even though I can recognize the beauty/talent in it. There were some parts that felt too drivingly repetitive.

Look, I want to be a worldly person and keep my mind open to all types of music. I know and accept the fact that I have western culture bias. The language barrier further mystifies the appeal of this type of recording. But when it comes right down to it, the sound that is entering my ears just...annoys me. I like some of the guitar phrasings, but then they proceed to just repeat for 5+ with no changes or resolution.

No thanks. Too slow.

Bit too funky for my tastes, but interesting.

There is some great guitar work recorded here and some of the other instrumentation is very nice, but the wailing vocal does not speak to me.

I did quite like some songs (Muudo Hormo, Djam Leelii, Kettodee) but can't rate it highly as I was just waiting for it to end in the second half. Giving it a 2 as I didn't completely hate it but I won't be going back to it

I don't think I'd choose to listen to it again but it was alright

Kinda cool but not my thing. Its sounds repetitive to my uneducated ears, and I’m sure it has a devoted audience.

I realise this is entirely the fault of my rigid white western understanding of music. I blame myself, not the artists. But this sounded like a disparate series of repeating instrumental patterns that didn't really turn into a cohesive melody at any point. I can appreciate the overall vibes and the rhythm of it, but I wouldn't choose to come back and play it again.

It was a ride with some great instrumentals, but just not my flavour

This was.... weird. Musically there are some catchy bits. But vocally it was not my jam.

Not my thing really but that didn’t mean it was bad.

Sure. That’s cool I guess.

Not sure why this is on the list. The only reason would be that the remainder contains folk/traditional music from all over the world and that this is just the start. Nothing wrong with the album, it's just that the folk music is more about the culture and the customs of the groups which made it, rather than about musical virtuosity and the art of making music itself. The music is monotonous and repetitive, but does reflext the culture and the emotions of the people who made it.

🎧Fine background music, never really got into it

I just don't like this kind of music. Very repetitive.

Foreign music is hard. Sure, it should probably be on the list but I'm not familiar with the style, language or culture. It's just too inaccessible for someone raised on a western diet. 1.58

way too repetitive YNN

Actually rather useful that this was so soon after Lam Toro. This was more enjoyable. Soundscapes, rather than active music. The sort of background noise you might hear in a nice lobby, or in a museum. Djam Leelii was good. Far too long though.

It was okay.

excellent if repetitive melodies, though vocals is tough for me to get past. cool stuff

This was just ok for me. I get that I won't understand the lyrics, but the instrumentation was a bit boring for me. A little too repetitive and simple. Would not seek this out again.

**This is not a bad album and yet to me, not a good album. Monotonous, tracks all sounded alike or very similar.

2 stars

I probably don’t have the opportunity to give this album the attention it deserves during the day. Very low key, tough to get into.

This didn't do much for me. I suppose it was nice to have it on the 1001 in terms of variety of musical styles and exposure to a wide range of artists, but I didn't find it all that compelling.

Call Me NOT Djam Leelii but I wasn’t really that keen on ‘adventuring’ into this. After a quick brisk through it, it seems like gently sinister or gently gentle background music for movies where the action lame or otherwise moves to a scene in Africa. Not awful but a bit boring and not really my ‘Djam’. 2.5 stars.

I'm not sure what it was about this, despite not understanding anything, but it gave me the anxieties. I just don't have it in me to allow this to sink in.

I'm all in for global representation on this list. Orchestra Baobab or Youssou N'Dour would be a much better choice for Senegalese.

Another one of those "interesting but not for me" albums.

I found the music to be a bit too long and repetitive for me.

No thanks, found this very boring and repetitive; not enough variation to justify 1hr 12.

I often like this kind of music but this wasn't so interesting, and was too long.

I just can't really do this one. Will I listen to again: 0%

Late 80's West-African jams wasn't in my plan for the day... Still isn't really. I'm sure it's beautiful lyrics, but I am not feeling it.

Uhhhh..fine I guess. I have no comparison i guess. A little annoying by the end

Having this and a Bollywood movie soundtrack back back made me quit the list for a week

I don't normally listen to this type of music and after today I'm pretty sure that won't change. This album was fine, just not really my cup of tea. Maybe I would like it better if I could understand the lyrics.

I appreciate that this project is exposing people to music like this that they otherwise might never hear. There is some wonderful African and especially West African music out there but this does not seem like one of the best albums the region has produced. It’s a guitar centred album but the guitar playing is decent at best. It’s not a great recording and the acoustic guitars (the main instruments) sound thin and brittle. There are almost no dynamics and the songs become monotonous after a while. I recommend folks check out another Senegalese guitarist called Habib Koité instead and I hope one of his albums shows up on this lists at some point. 2.5 / 5.

Obviously, lyrically I can't comment. Musically, I enjoy African music now and then, but I don't know enough, or experience enough, to know if this is a good representation or not. To my ears, it sounds roughly the same as most other African music I've come across. I think rating this is a bit dishonest, as I don't have the nuance to really have a strong opinion of any aspect of the work. I would be curious to hear music in this style, or even fusion genres, with lyrics in English or French, so I could engage deeper. Even so, to me, it was a bit repetitive, and a bit long. More broadly, I think the current pop space is a bit stagnant, and the introduction of broader influences would help (taking the most boring aspects of country and rap DO NOT count). I'm pretty neutral on MIA overall, but I appreciate the fusion with non-Western/First World/Developed World/Anglosphere/other euphemism for rich genres. I hope we get more artists like experiment in that way.

Ever wondered what the bigotry of soft expectations sounds like? Here you are. It isn't bad per se, just an indifferent collection of songs, indistinguishable from much (not all) of the bunk from the Sahel labelled "World Music" (Yes, it is just a name. But like "Classical Music", a lot of presumptions coagulate behind the cognomen.)

It was different anyway

As far as obscure African albums go, this one is probably fine. No idea how to write something like this. I have no concept of how to compare it to others in the same genre. So I'm going to rate based off how much I liked it. Glad I listened while doing chores because listening to this while driving would have been a much work experience.

I liked the sound but it did seem to be repetitive.

This is nice put-your-head-down-and-write-this-report music. 2

I like the base of it, but it gets a bit too repetitive. 2.5/5

Första låten funkar. Sen blir det tradigt.

Very repetitive and long

I respect it and hear the melodies but lead vocals sound like 1990s Adam Sandler

Okay world music, not in the mood this time

I actually found this quite annoying. The songs were not interesting

In a nutshell: music to zone out to. It’s soothing, droning and simple. Not a bad thing. Struggled to find information on how the album was made and an English translation of the lyrics, which is a shame. I want to understand this album more. That said, I’m basing this rating on the music composition and the vibe. Overall: 3/10

The kind of music my older brother would put on and when everyone complained to him he would go “I never complain about your music!!”

This was pleasant, something a little lighter and more energetic after some heavier albums. Nothing I would revisit personally, though. I would have given it a 3 had it not been a bit too repetitive and lengthy - but it's very close.

It was okay, something different from what I usually listen to.

I mean, it's cool. Probably not going to give it a second listen.

This was alright

This was alright for background music, but the wood percussion got to be pretty grating after awhile.

appreciate the rhythms and guitar but didn't really enjoy listening to it. didn't like the vocals and after each song is set up (this is the rhythm) it doesn't really change

Too long

Oh I really wanted to like this but just couldn't get on with it...

Too repetitive

African innocence

I'm sorry, I just couldn't get into it. Vocals too grating, songs too repetitive, album too long.

One long African jam session. That’s fine if it’s your thing, but it’s not mine.

First time hearing this. Glad I was exposed to it but in the end, it doesn't do it for me. Might be the cultural difference and my Canadian ears aren't used to African folk sounds but I couldn't vibe with it.

Excellent guitar playing but it's way too long

A bit different but long and uninteresting

It's perfectly OK noodling, but it's very repetitive, and very, very long. It wore out it's welcome after about 30 minutes in, which is not even half way through. It's not bad as such, just uninteresting and absolutely never going to cross my mind again.

I couldn't shake the lens of 'listenability' -- this felt like a coffee or beer that I can appreciate and respect but I'm not going to order it.

Bastante rollo. Pero me ha gustado una canción, Kettodee. Así que se libra del 1.

Nice background music for working in Photoshop, but ... way too long. wore out its welcome after the album's titular song.

Haven’t listened to this before. Won’t listen to it again. But glad I did this time. Just not for me.

It’s always interesting when you get handed something that’s well outside your usual musical sphere however the album feels overly long - probably because by the end of the second track it becomes very similar sounding (to my ears at least). Glad to have listened to it but it’s not for me.

Similar to the Songhoy Blues album, but I didn't really enjoy this one as much.

This is a fine album. It was good background music while working. I probably won’t be circling back to this anytime soon but a pleasant listen.

Quite underwhelming, but I guess this roll of Senegalese music is too un-rockified for my expectations.

Enjoyed it! Not my style of music but I can appreciate it🩷

I didnt like the vocals, music was ok.

Not my style, doesn't mean it's bad but just really couldn't get into it.

Broke this up into two listens. Interesting album, so many sounds. None of which are English. The song that the album is named after seems to be the most well produced song in my opinion. Overall not a terrible album to listen to but not sure I'll revisit it. 2.5 stars for me.

Another world music album. Long songs, fine for the experience.

This one is not for me. I actually like the sound, and almost all of the tracks, but why in the world are they so long? Nothing evolves... The sound at the start of a track will be the sound at the end of the track.

Música africana. Me ha aburrido, bastante rollo. Un 2.

Too weird for me

Perfectly fine for the most part. But I guess I couldn’t get a wrangle on what made it great. As an outsider it felt like one long song stretched across the entire record. Nothing was specifically bad but I can’t see myself ever listening again. 2.5/5

Liked it (except one song.) Would have liked it even more if I could have understood the lyrics. Never would’ve heard of this without the 1001 list, it worked again. (2.3*s)

Everything just blends together after a while

Honestly this dragged on so long I just stopped listening. It was fine as a passive listen, but not as an active one.

Not my thing. To slow and same sounding. I respect it but wont listen to it again. 4/10

"Pretty" music but the voice is unbearable. That twangy whine that Indian and Middle Eastern music often has is just grating to me.

Shoutout Senegal but my Western mind can not comprehend the length of this project.

instrumentals were nice but i couldn't get past the vocals

would be better without the singing.

not something i would ever listen to on my own, but it was an interesting listen

This just wasn't very special to me. It sounded droning and monotonous, and the guitar was usually out of tune to my ears. If I understood the language, maybe I'd have gotten more out of it, but this wasn't even enjoyable as background music.

Sounded fine! Nothing really connected with me. I didn't mind it at all, but I don't plan to return to it ever.

The singers voice was very nice but not at all my style of music

Fun to hear new music, wish it wasn’t so long and repetitive tho.

Bastante rollo. Pero me ha gustado una canción, Kettodee. Así que se libra del 1.

My favorite part was when there was no singing.

Yeah, could have gone my life without listening to this one. 2 for effort.

1. lam toro - 0 2. lodo - 0 3. mudo - 1 4. zalminam - 0 5. macina - 0 6. djam - 0 7. bibe - 1 8. zehilam - 1 9. ketodee- 1 10. mayo - 1.5 11. lenol - 1 12. taara - 1

Prachtige unieke Afrikaanse muziek.

Not for me

Kindof repetitive and while all the songs are different they blend in together. It was a little long for me. 2 stars

the songs are repetitive and pretty much sound the same, and with that, the album is long. i will say that the instrumentals are really nice and sound beautiful. the music is relaxing and atmospheric, but i’m not a fan of the vocals. not the kind of album i’d listen to

Not bad, but not something that is quite my taste

Only listened to the 8 first tracks as the 4 remaining were part of a reissue and I did not feel like listening to more. Creative guitar work and interesting rhythm but man that is an annoying voice. Might just be cultural dissonance, but I never had a problem with the backup singers. Liked track 6 and 8 more than the rest.

Interresting but not for me

The music is interesting and intriguing and I really enjoy it but I do not enjoy the vocals. I'm sure it's a cultural thing but that tone is grating to my ears.

Started off quite hopeful, with the first track sounding like a mixture between folk and world music in an interesting way. But before long it had descended into hand clapping and repetitive noises that became progressively more and more dull. I realised that I could skip the last four tracks, as they weren't part of the original recording, and by the time I was through the first half a dozen tracks I was done anyway. I listened to this on YouTube and I noticed that every song has almost an identical structure, given away by the sound shape below the video; introduction, mumbling and guitar with drums and other stuff, slowly getting more and more subdued, until a crescendo at the end to finish. Rinse and repeat, and with the language barrier all the tracks started to sound identical too. Disappointing 2 stars, but then I don't have any love for world music, so I suppose it's no real surprise.

Production is good. It sounds mysterious, but it's too repetitive for me. The songs are way too long and the riffs are very short.

There are some great melodic/instrumental hooks in these pieces, but they're hardly developed and it's easy to lose interest after the first three or so minutes of each track. And, given the five-plus-minute average length of the tracks, almost half the runtime is spent wishing the song would progress to something a little more engaging. I'm glad I listened to this album, but it's a bit too tedious for a relisten. The opening track was a highlight, if only because I didn't yet realise how thematically repetitive the future tracks would continue to be. Cool singing voice. I was a little worried I'd tire quickly of it, but I actually really enjoyed the vocals, especially when they were harmonised. 2/5

It's good music to have in the background while you work. But in this specific genre of background music, much better exists.

From a cultural perspective this might be quite interesting, but this Senegalese music is just not my taste. Interesting for once, but I won't listen to this again.

This was about as weird as I figured it would be.

just wasn't for me. Fine musically, but not something I would ever listen to.

I can see the appeal, but not really for me.

Weird, a bit too long. I like listening to other cultures music but personally it wasn’t to my taste.

It's nice enough and made with enough skill, it's just not my thing at all.

I think this might finally be the album that broke my enjoyment of African albums on this list. It started out great with music in exile but since then no other album has lived up to/surpassed it and I finally felt totally fatigued by the genre with this one. It isn't objectively bad but it was just miserable for me to sit through another 70 minutes of similar sounding music even if the production was alright.

This was a bit odd and to be honest the album cover freaked me out.

Afro-Islamic transcendent vibes baby! Shame it felt far too long, I got bored after 30 mins. 2.5

Interesting and different, didn't really catch my interest though

I tried and it was fine for a bit then it got a bit repetitive

I like the atmospheric sound it generates. Almost sounds like something out of the Civilization games. Clearly this is a deeply cultural music genre, but the album is just not good. The tracks are repetitive and the singer's voice is monotonous. There don't seem to be any sparks of creativity or invention. I got bored after the third song. Also, why is it an HOUR long? Insane. Not good.

Always up for exploring new international genres, but man is this LP long. The sparse instrumentation does no favors when the runtime stretches out over an hour, the initial novelty wearing off quick as each track sounds quite similar.

Very well made but not really my kinda thing personally

I love to explore world music but this is a bit too much even for me

Perfectly fine, but not my thing. Maybe for a cool spot.

# 24 : Plucky guitar with African (Senegal) lyrics. Sounded pleasant. Same whiny old songs throughout. Too long and repetative for me. Cool sound though.

I appreciate it for what it is but it just isn’t quite for me. There is some fun guitar work but the vocals are just droning for me and the whole thing gets repetitive after a while.

I would probably like more if 1) I could understand the lyrics 2) it wasn't so repetitive and Islamic prayer influenced sounding but 3) respect to him just not my thing

I don’t really know enough about this type of music to fairly rate it Sounded fine though

Don't like it

Nice sound but extremely repetitive

Weirdly hypnotic in a bad way

Struggled to give this one two stars

black panther guy

This album has nice, relaxing instruments in the background, but I cannot get past that singing. It makes me wish it was just the backing track most of the time. That and way shorter. Didn't like this, but I can't say I hate it.

I'm sure that on the world music stage, this is absolutely iconic. Unfortunately, it's just not for me.

2/5. Some fun songs but nothing super interesting, many sound quite similar and it drags on at points.

Unique (to my ears) West African music that uses very simple and repetitive instrumentation that’s pleasant to listen to but doesn’t do much at all. The vocals are in his native tongue which makes this even harder to listen to. I think there’s some value here especially to native listeners but for me it was too out there to really be enjoyed.

It was an alright listen, although a bit monotonous at times, but not something I’d look up. Seems harsh but I’m going to give it 2 because of that.

1) The album was too long. I got a feel for exactly what it would be within half an hour, and didn’t need a second half. 2) His voice was just painfulThe music was actually quite vibrant, but it was painful to listen to over an hour of his nasally sounding singing.

I like the music and the instruments but not the voice. I was going to go 3 but I read reviews that gave 4 and thought perfect. I repeat: I like the music and instruments but not the voice so I’m going 2.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Meh it did sound nice in parts buts ultimately not my cup of tea Favourite song: didn’t have one

Distinctively 80s with the guitar and production, this mbalax record features mild and relaxing psychedelic folk influences but tries a bit too hard at times to achieve those effects. I did enjoy the tropical sound (could hear calypso in tracks like "Salminanam"), and the intros to many songs were good but don't go very far, with many tracks feeling too repetitive, not just derivative of each other but also not justifying their 5-10 minute runtimes. And overall, it's way too long at over an hour, with most of them completely forgettable. Favorites: Muudo Hormo, Djam Leeli, Sehilam

I'm all for something I have no preconceptions of, but this didn't do much for me

Not sure about this one. Kinda liked the first track, but got a bit repetitive real soon. 2,5/5

Some interesting soundscapes - really like the guitar work but they just started bleeding together

Vocals aren't for me, but interesting guitar.

Nice to get a break from Western music, but: this one's boring. To the curators of this website I will say, don't give up! I'm sure that, eventually, you'll find plenty of good non Western music. Do consider asking the majority of this world's population, I'm sure they'd happily share favourites!

Piercing

instrumentally it was interesting but the vocals killed it for me. 2.

I really try to give the international music a fair shot as it's always unfamiliar territory. Usually I can enjoy it, but Djam Leelii just didn't connect for me. The instrumentation in all of the songs seem to consist of one four or five note riff that repeats the entire way through, and the singing also feels like it's very repetitive as well. Once you've heard about 30 seconds of a song you've heard all it has to give.

Listened Before: N Nope. I'm good. I'm giving this one extra star because of the great musicianship that is evident in my cursory listen. But it's 1/5 otherwise because why is it on this list? I did not need to hear this before I died. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Daande Lenol (because it's short).

He takes his time to develop the songs on this album, slowly building them up so a bit of patience is required. His high pitched voice can be grating after awhile though.

It was nice for a few songs.

Not my kind of music

Some pretty cool world music that gets extremely grating and repetitive after a while. Really not my cup of tea but still glad it's on this list. Gotta love that out-of-tune wooden percussion...

Beautiful sound but ultimately samey.

Interesting background noise, but not something I would have picked on my own.

Just to know

Not for everyone. It sounds good but it's not for me to listen to an entire album of indian music.

This was extremely cool for about 10 minutes, then it started getting kind of old, then I looked and saw I was still in the middle of the second song with about an hour and 2 minutes left to go. Around the fourth song, everything started turning into a blur of African singing and drumming with nothing that could keep my ADHD-ridden brain focused.. and there were still about 50 minutes of music left. The whole stretch from "Salminam" to "Kettodee" is blank in my brain. It does pick itself back up after that though - "Ko Wone Mayo" was probably my favorite song on the album. I respect the fuck out of this album though, despite everything I said. This deserves to be on a list like this way more than "Robert Dimery threw a dart into a pile of britpop albums he found in a dumpster behind his local music store, so let's add the one it landed on into the book"

Djam Leelii...over an hour of world music I can't connect with and don't particularly like. Not a good example of impressive wider listening. Escapes a 1/5 because it's not outwardly bad, just boring as fuck.

More world music. This is not interesting at all, fine to have on in the background but doesn't really offer much and gets very repetitive very quickly. Bland and uninspiring, 2/5. Just.

Paar nummer was genoeg.

Eentonig, zeg!

It's a true genre album. A genre I don't relate to.

Not at all for me. I obviously did not understand the lyrics but I don't think that really made a difference here.

Baaba Maal whoah, Baaba Maal whoah, He comes from Senegal, He makes pleasant background music with Mansour Seck's chilled guitar licks for us all. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Lam Tooro Date listened: 14/07/22

Música africana. Me ha aburrido, bastante rollo. Un 2.

Bastante rollo. Pero me ha gustado una canción, Kettodee. Así que se libra del 1.

Not the usual enjoyment I get from this genre, but probably just because it is a touch less upbeat.

Didn't make it to the end. I quite liked the commanding nature of his voice, but it wasn't enough to carry it for me.

Disco con toques árabes, con instrumentos típicos. Muy para incondicionales del género. No me ha gustado mucho.

I feel like if I was immersed in the West African Culture in Africa this music live would sound better...but listening to it via Spotify in the office doesn't have the same vibe.

Struggled with this because I liked it but also found it very boring and will never listen to it again

Interesting look at Senegal style music.

What? Why?

Nice folk. A bit twee and nothing really jumped out at me.

Best Song: Salminanam. I liked the vocal hook, whatever it was. Worst Song: Bibbe Leyde. Felt a little too much like religious prayer for my taste. Overall: A difficult album for me to rate. On the one hand, it is far more sparse and folksy than the music I typically like, and I find the lead singer's nasally delivery grating at times. On the other hand, some of the instrumentation is quite nice, and the fact that it is not in English means that it is something I can listen to in the background without getting distracted. Overall, happy to have heard it, not sure how often I'll come back to it.

Interesting stripped back bluesy afro rootsy style. Not unpleasant, but not strong enough to want to listen to again.

Fav tracks: - Djam Leelii - Sehilam - Kettodee -Least fav: - Lam Tooro

2/5 not at all

interesting and unusual experience, that's sure, I like some melodies and vocals, but I don't think that I liked it enough to listen to it again in the short term, something between 2 and 2,5

Good instrumentals, but overall not really into it.

Not for me

Ciekawe, to na pewno

It seems ok

Could not get into it. At all. Didn't add.

Interesting, not for me

I mean I don't hate it, I just really can't listen to the whole thing.

not for me

Didn't finish this, wasn't my vibe at all.

If you take any couple of seconds from the album it will sound pretty good and the musicians seem skilled. The problem is the hugely repetitive tracks which sound absolutely the same from beginning to end for 6 minutes a piece. Exactly the same couple of chords going on and on... It's not like the individual songs are very different from each other either.

Proper escapism music, feels like you’re in a different world listening to it. Would I put it on at a party though, unlikely. I can appreciate the instruments, sounds and vocals but it’s probably a 1 listen album.

Gillar. Några bra låtar, men mest ganska förglömliga ändå.

Not really my thing

the patterns and melodies were too foreign to my ear

As far as world music goes, this is a solid entry. Very easy to find the groove, but there isn't any major stand out single, rather a solid listening experience.

Didn't mind it but too outside my comfort zone for a high score. Would never listen again.

Why is it that compilers of lists like this, when it comes time to pick an obligatory African album or two, always go for the ones that sound the most like Western music? Wait, I answered my own question. On Djam Leelii, there is little of the rhythmic complexity that characterizes African music or the typical interweaving of instruments. If it weren't for Baaba Maal's vocals, with its tell-tale scales typical of Senegalese music, you'd barely know this was African. Mansour Seck, the traditional griot who was Maal's teacher, accompanies him on guitar. Sadly, Seck isn't an especially inventive or skillful guitarist. You could throw a rock in Senegal and hit 3 or four guitarists better than Seck. There just isn't a lot to this music. Without even trying, I could find 10 or 15 albums of traditional Senegalese music better than this. It's not horrible or anything, just bland and uninspiring.

Beautiful music but boring. I yawned my way through this one. I am not a fan of the electric acoustic and this album is composed solely of that. The album is a bit one note and faded to the background. I generally enjoy Touareg Rock, but this was a little too low octane. Prefer Ali Farqa Toure or Bombino, though those can be boring. This has 90s Starbucks white person written all over it. It is soothing abd nice to listen to, would be good over a cup of Java and talking about your world travels. I respect it. But don’t like it. 2

Tuareg rock usually gets me hard, but this only gave me a semi.

Nicht so richtig meins.

I have a hard time appreciating music I can’t understand. Sounded interesting though.

Música africana no me llegó ninguna canción en especial

It probably was of some cultural significance but did not enjoyed this one

not my thing...didn’t sound horrible but i didn’t like the album

Dos guitarras y una voz tocando... ¿"blues" africano?

Man it was long. And the last 3 songs became irritating. At first it was colorful though the vocalizations are definitely not my thing... a little friendly sound at times. But it was pretty boring and a chore to get through.

I appreciate it, but nah.

i dont feel its special nor do i like it that much but its not horrible

dull...

Relaxing, overall enjoyable; just not necessarily my jam

Phew. The "World" genre apparently refers to music that’s very African, Middle Eastern, or Indian. I might listen to one or two tracks from it. A whole album is too much for me. It might be great music, and the influences on "my" music are very important. But I just can’t get into it. 1/5

My ears feel like they're being led in circles and they just want to rest, it's fine but there's a list full of various good and special albums to listen to and this one's just got me tired

Repetitive, slow and doesn't go anywhere. 1/5

Did not finish. Not for me.

No me gusto 2/10

Not my music, sorry!

I don't care that I can't tell what he's saying. The music just seems boring. The same sort of beat and vibe the entire time. That's fine for a track, but not an hour. Kettodee stood out. 1.5/5

Det här fattar jag inte storheten i. En etta

Uh. What?! I guess this is what most of the rest of the world goes through when they listen to American music. Somewhere I’m sure this artist is packing out stadiums, but not for me.

Just not for me in anyway

The very start of this record got me excited - that guitar intro is super cool and captivating, but they lost me with the singing. That vocal style just doesn't land for me. The rest of the record was not as interesting musically either -very simple and repetitive and, at times, wholly unpleasant.

Album No. 200 on my list. Not surprisingly, I had never heard of Baaba Maal or Mansour Seck, not to speak of their album "Djam Leelii". I had no idea what I was getting into, I had never before listened to music from Mali. I find it pretty cool that the 1001 album list occasionally also features non-Western music. Certainly nice to broaden the horizon, which in this case I'd never have done without this website. I have to say though: I didn't like the album, unfortunately. I feel like an absolute snob for not doing so, but I just don't. There are some guitar parts that I found pretty cool, but the singing, the song structure, the lack of dynamic: I just didn't like it. I really tried to, but I just didn't. Not a matter of origin of this album, not a matter of me not being open-minded, it's just not my thing. I get why this may have been an influential album, or why some people think it deserves its spot on this list. And I can certainly appreciate its qualities. I just didn't like it, unfortunately. Nevertheless, I will add "Salminamam" to my playlist (one of the lesser played tracks on Spotify, interestingly). 1/5 stars (I'm sorry about that!)

Regrettably one star as I did not enjoy it and did not finish the album. It is too long and too much of the same.

Fuck this!

Not for me

Not for me

Dragged on for too long

I made three songs in and realized they all sound the same. 2/10

I was physically unable to continue to pay attention through this album. I assumed I had listened to all the songs not because I had sat there for what felt forever but struggled, personally, to find where one song ended and one began. This is entirely a me problem. Season: True Autumn

not my style at all

I bet Paul Simon likes this album. Me, not so much.

Even if I could understand the lyrics, the music is repetitive beats and no dynamics.

African music that I've never heard before and likely never will again
