Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Very good very nice
Before Today, I was just Walking Wounded. Then I heard this and now see the Flipside.
Richtig feine Kombi aus elektronischen Sounds und Pop
Excellent album. Very much mid-90s Trip Hop.
This one surprise me in a good way. I hade Idlewild earlier and strongly disliked it so I had low expectations on this one. Well colour me shocked. This one was quite solid. More atmospheric and urban which is closer to my leanings and less sophisti-pop which bores me to tears. Wrong is the standout track, especially the remixed version.
I had some low expectations coming into this album. It seemed like a blotted electronic album and the score/reviews for this didn’t seem promising. I thought I was heading for almost an hour of background music. But holy fuck, was I wrong. To be fair, the album is long and the two remixes at the end didn’t do much for me. But for most of the album, this was shockingly good. This wasn’t so much club electronic music, but rather lounge-ish. Some might find that boring and I thought I would too. But between the smooth ambiance and Tracey Thorn’s vocals, this was more tranquil to me than sleep-inducing. If it was a little shorter, I might have given it a 5. Favorite track: Walking Wounded (original) Other hits: Wrong (original), Single, Mirrorball, Big Deal, Before Today
EBTG has a unique electronica and bongo combination behind Dido-esque vocals creating an enjoyable dance album. I remember Wrong from the radio. All songs are good, will be checking out more of their music (3.6*s)
Fun as hell
honestly EBTG... i was not familiar with your game. this was flames ... i LOVE DnB !!!!
Walking Wounded is the ninth studio album from English pop duo Everything But the Girl. The band makes soft-spoken pop songs, featuring the smooth, rich vocals from Tracey Thorn, supported by an ambient version of techno and trip-hop elements. The result is an unusual, interesting mixture for pop songs. Walking Wounded was the pair's most successful album; Thorn called it their "pop triumph." It includes what may be their biggest single, Walking Wounded, which has been described as "ambient jungle."
Actually really appeals to me. I can't believe I took so long to listen to this, haha.
I only really know "Missing" from EBTG which was a big hit in the 90s and the single which inspired a bit of a change in style on this album. I find that Tracey Thorn's voice really suits the chillwave/ laid back drum 'n' bass vibe on this record, I could listen to this again when I just wanted to drift away and be peaceful.
I feel like I should be less surprised that this came out in 1996, but that's one of the most impressing things about it. Funneled through all of the different layers of pop, downtempo electronic music, and further development of EDM this sounds so familiar yet clearly dated. Deserves a bit more credit
Tracey Thorn could sing the phone book and it would sound lovely. This was massive at the time. Still chill af. 4/5
Ótima combinação de vocais e elementos eletrônicos, sendo os remixes o ponto alto.
Varied in genre, yet consistent in atmosphere. Very enjoyable throughout, will definitely keep this in rotation.
pretty greaty
Good electronic music that transports me back to the 90s. Thoughtful lyrics and a pleasing voice (albeit a little old by the end of the album).
They weren’t on my radar back in the day but should have been. Good all the way through.
Really cool vibe. This is under rated
I’ve always loved Tracy’s voice. Missing, Wrong, and Driving were the songs that introduced me to EBTG. But the magic happened when I listened to Protection, the Massive Attack album in which she participated. It’s something melancholic, the yearning… I don’t know. Now listening to this album at my 40s, I can discover the textures. It’s a shame it took so long to me to understand it.
A very chilled listen, thanks to Tracey Thorn's haunting, ethereal jazz- inspired vocals set against trip hop beats and keyboard pads, strings and bleeps. The best tracks for me are 'The Heart Remains A Child', 'Flipside' and 'Mirrorball'; it's probably no coincidence that these feature acoustic guitars, have a slightly faster tempo and generally stick out as an experiment (which i like). I don't think EBTG have ever made a completely perfect album, not that the music is ever bad, it's just that they cover all the bases, meaning most people find something they enjoy. A review on Wikipedia mentioned EBTG being national treasures, and they might be right.
This should be ticking all my trip hop boxes, but it's all just a little same-y after a bit. I felt I could sing Missing (off a different album) along to most of these songs.
I knew some tracks, but hadn't listened to the whole album before, enjoyed it more than I thought. Similarly, I kept finding myself muttering "...and I miss you" on most of the choruses.
edm dance hop. at least a 3. pretty good but got a little samey at the end. 3, or if I'm generous, 4.
I enjoyed this a lot. Accomplished
This is exactly my kind of music, but I can’t say every track grabbed me. Looking at the release year, this album feels ahead of its time. The songs have a feel that reminds me more of the 00s. I enjoyed this listen, I was into it from the first track. I will make sure to return to this album in the future to give it another listen.
I dig these mellow grooves. 4
I liked this more than I anticipated! Will listen to them more often
These guys are cool. Deserves a 2nd listen.
It’s something I would listen to again.
Strong start! Need to listen to a couple more times, 4.25
I like this one a lot. Top end of a 4 for me.
Great laid back 90s electro
As soon as I heard that stereotypical lo fi electronica sound at the very start of this I knew I was gonna at least enjoy most of the album regardless of how engaging it was and I was right. Flipside stuck out to me but overall I was just along for a nice ride.
Pretty cool pop. The voice reminds me of Annie Lennox. I really liked downtempo for a while. My taste has changed in the meantime. But maybe I'll listen to it again now. 4/5
Actually this is pretty decent northern soul. She’s got a great voice and the songs are decent and the playing is good. It’s on the border of must listen though …. 3.5 rounded up
I am currently on a much needed holiday in a small beachside town in northern New South Wales. I am lying on the couch in the winter afternoon sun with a book, but truth be told I am closer to napping than reading. And I'm listening to Walking Wounded by EBTG on repeat. It's the perfect record for this moment; sophisticated pop music for adults. Smooth, clever, warm and inviting. The electronic production bed is the ideal foundation for Tracey Thorn's vocals, which is the real star of this record. I've always loved her voice, notably on her guest appearances on Massive Attack's Protection album. EBTG clearly learnt from that and the success of the remix of 'Missing' and realised that this trip-hop/dance backing was a perfect frame for her lyrics and voice. There are actual songs here, that reveal their pleasures shyly over repeated listens. Too good.
Everything But The Girl is one of those artists I had forgotten about, so revisiting this album was definitely fun. The music is mostly trip-hop oriented beats or really cool atmospheric jungle and drum and bass beats, which I enjoy the most. Due to its laid-back vibe, I think it has aged pretty well compared to other bands making commercially available electronic music at that time. Unfortunately, when it comes to electronic-driven music, there are only a few bands whose albums feel timeless. This is one of them, alongside other artists such as Portishead.
Already a favourite of mine
Pretty good
4 - I was a bit worried when it first started that it was going to feel really dance beat vibes. But it actually kept me interested and worked well against the vocals. The vocals were really good and tracey thorns voice was super familiar. Think I know it most from massive attack. But yeah, cool interesting album
A beautiful exploration of being wounded in love. A favorite album for years in that it is carefully understated. Not maudlin or angry. An excellent blend of music and voice with thoughtful lyrics that all set an atmosphere.
I enjoyed this loads more than I thought I would, but then I really don't like "Missing" and had kinda imagined that this album would be more of the same. It's not. It's pretty much a mid 90s mildly experimental lean towards drum and bass. When listening to it, I thought of Kosheen and I haven't thought about Kosheen in years. So yeah, I'm gonna say this is a 4. They're definitely a notable act, and this is a decentish album.
hip, enjoyable music
Forgotten how rave-y this album was. So evocative of the 90s jungle scene in Bristol, as it matured into something beyond warehouses. Before the… unpleasantness… Hard recommend and got 2 spins today, one immediately after the other.
Rating: 8/10 Great album overall. Really enjoyed the production, singing, and chill vibes. A lot of this album is very beautiful instrumentally, made for a pleasant listen from start to finish. I think this band is not as interesting as some of their trip-hop contemporaries (Portishead and Massive Attack) but they have their own sound which is definitely worth listening to. Favorite songs: Before Today, Wrong, Walking Wounded, Flipside, Big Deal, Mirrorball. Worst song: Good Cop, Bad Cop.
Poppy, trance-like, low key
Un clásico
Starting off sounding like Big Brother but ending up reminding me of Girl Ray. Favourite track: Flipside.
A distinct upgrade from their sophisti-pop sound. By leaning into downtempo ambiance with distinct deep house production, Everything But The Girl found a new lease on life. Suddenly, the duo's songs have a sense of freedom to them, breaking free of the songwriting that often made their earlier work so boring. Tracey Thorn's vocals on this album is an incredible testament to how even the greatest vocals need the right songs to back it up. I feel as though her contributions are stunning when paired with this atmospheric electronic production. One for the books.
This was way more interesting than I expected. The singer has a calm but confident voice that I loved and while the music is pretty minimalist, it works pretty well for me. Maybe because it's something pretty new to me so I haven't heard a ton of it. Reminds me some of Massive Attack.
Cool 90’s synth and electronic music with interesting vocals
Like Dido, but hornier. I'm admittedly a sucker for trip-hop, too.
Tracey Thorn could sing me the phone book, and I would be enthralled.
Everything But the Girl is another act that I primarily know from their big hit and Todd in the Shadow’s One Hit Wonderland series. I understand that this is their album after “Missing” blew up, which doubles down on the trip hop sound, and it’s pretty good. She has an incredible voice, which carries even the flatter songs. I skipped the remixes at the end, but still had fun. B
Some sophisticated song structure but such a downer
Moody and pretty. I like it. Great voice.
Never heard of them before, but this was a pretty nice album. Great background listening. Sort of trip-hop but somehow both more pop and more techno than most trip-hop. Nothing really stood out to me, but it was nice.
The voice of Tracey Thorn is awesome.
Something between Natalie Merchant and Dido. Beautiful. A true album.
Background
good hotel elevator music (in the kindest way possible) groovy vibey something to relax to
These guys turned out some polished music in their time, with this album was less pop and more smooth chill than their previous album. Not very often I do this with the 1001 albums generator, but I played the album twice, back to back, I really enjoyed it.
Nytt för mig och fan jag gillar den här brittiska 90-tals-trip-hop-prylen. Inte lika bra som Dummy med Portishead men en stabil fyra.
Drum machine, with vocals mixed to be at the other end of the world. Lovely.
High points are Tracey Thorn’s vocal and the breezy electro-pop sounds although I feel there are similar albums that are a bit more interesting and varied. Ultimately quite liked it though
I have always been an EBTG fan. Happy to see something I knew and had listened to. This album was quite a departure from their prior ones but I loved it. I generally like it when artists try new things.
Some solid chill step
British ambient trip hop/electronica. Not bad mood music. Nothing to write home about, but not bad in the background. Favourite songs: Wrong, Flipside, Big Deal, Mirrorball Least favourite songs: Good Cop Bad Cop 4/5
Shades of Portishead & massive attack but vocals are much better Groovy morning music
Genre Downtempo, drum and bass, electronica, sophisti-pop, techno, trip hop 1996 Singles: Walking Wounded (#6 UK), Wrong (#8 UK), Single (#20 UK) , Before Today (#25 UK) 5/5: Walking Wounded, Before Today, Wrong, Good Cop Bad Cop 4/5: Single, Mirrorball, Rating: 4/5
I really enjoyed this album. The beats and vocals together were different than anything I’ve listened to before. Probably not an album I’ll listen to a lot, but I really enjoyed it.
1/25/24. Different and creative pop music, definitely has that 90s sound. Will revisit.
"Walking Wounded" is the ninth studio album by British musical duo Everything But The Girl. Following the recent success from the single "Missing," the group adopted a more electronica-based style. Others styles incorporated include downtempo, drum and bass, sophisto-pop techno and trip hop. The group is vocalist Tracey Thom and Ben Watt who does everything else - guitars, synths, beats, etc. The album hit #4 in the UK and #37 in the US and was very well received critically. The fourth and final single "Before Today" opens the album. Dreamy, cold synths. Quick electronic beats. Very chill. Thom wants your love but her heart is harder. The beats in "Wrong" are more upbeat and dance, definitely house influenced. Layered vocals. She's in a relationship she shouldn't be in. The ever-changing beats from song to song continues and this time we're more downtempo in "Single." Thom's emotional, longing voice. She's separated from a partner and doesn't know what to do. I'm waiting for her to be in great relationship where everything is great; ain't happening I'm thinking. "Walking Wounded" has idiosyncratic beats and slides into the drum and bass genre somewhat. Ambient synths. She still wants him even though he punishes her by not wanting it. Hey, there's a ballad of sorts in "Mirrorball." Acoustic guitar and downtempo drums. Trying to get past her mistakes. This album has a chill vibe and is seductive sounding. The cold dance music contrasted with Thom's soft emotional vocals. The songs have a pop structure but keep it interesting with various genre elements - trip hop, downtempo, house and others. The music has a hypnotic feel with its repetitive beats. This a very good album that mostly everyone will like to some extent.
3.75
Reminds me of Sade but trancier. This was honestly nice to have on in the background but at no point did I feel like I needed to give it my full attention.
Bonito, como suelen ser sus canciones.
Favorite song(s): "Before Today", "Wrong", "Walking Wounded". 4/5
smooth, pretty, a little dance, very nice.
Very chill. 7/10
When I read that this was an electronica/new wave/pop album I didn't think I was going to like it. As it turns out, I love Tracey Thorn's vocals, they're the draw for this duo. I also like the chill vibe, it reminded me of Sade or Dido. I still hate electronic drums but they were less obnoxious than what I've heard on other electronica albums offered up here. A solid 3.5/5 but I'll round up because they surprised me and won me over.
I like this album a lot
Interesting
C'est fou ça
petite sieste mais pour ma defense je l’avais deja ecoute
Unique and every song true to their sound. Loved it.
REALLY enjoyed this! Her voice is so calming and unique.
Wow. Great stuff. Don't know why I haven't heard of them before. Solid 4 for this album.
Mellow
A viiibe
Ahhhh...much better. We are back on track. I enjoyed the atmosphere this album set as I dealt with problematic flood insurance issues. I'd listen to it again some day.
Some great atmospheric dance with a sprinkle of d’n’b The remixes are really cool too Favourite tracks: Before Today, Wrong, Walking Wounded, Flipside, Mirrorball
Tracey Thorn's voice is remarkable. The rhythms and beats that sit behind it are mesmerising... This is going into the collection!!
Didn't realise they were so heavily DnB inspired - paring those beats with love songs goes surprisingly well
My intro to EBTG was my big sister gifting me Temperamental on CD when I was a tween, way before I actually appreciated electronic music. It took a while, but that album really grew on me. I would credit it for my current love of deep house. This one never hit me as hard, I still feel like it has more filler. But now, as an older person who has grown to love trip-hop and downtempo (those are the genres here btw, how tf is this new-wave LOL) and countless other electronic subgenres... I really like it, it's some sad ass 90s night bus kinda music, but I can appreciate that now. There was also a time that I didn't appreciate Burial, we all make mistakes (particularly as optimistic teenagers who haven't grown into their major depression yet). Anyway, Temperamental is still better though (5/5).
Nice electro stuff
This album includes some sexy tunes that still hold up today. Everything but the Girl is a staple in this genre and Tracy Thorne's vocal is lovely.
I didn’t know what to expect but I didn’t expect what I got. I’m having a good time, though. It’s like love electronica. I’m digging it. But we take a bit of a turn with the fourth track - The Heart Remains a Child - which is more midtempo pop. Not bad but not the love electronica I was grooving to up to that point. The title track, Walking Wounded, follows and brings us back to where we started. Romantic electronica. This is good night drive music too. And then they lose me again with Mirrorball. Just like before, not bad, but more midtempo pop than electronica. I’m all for genre bending. I just find their electronica more appealing. In all, good album.
3.5/5
I wasn’t excited when I got this album but it was a nice pleasant electronic album. Maybe a bit repetitive at times but very soothing. Added to playlist: Before Today
It's everything but the girl, but not the album with the song people know from everything but the girl.
Great listen. I enjoyed the drum and bass line sounds. I didn't give this enough time when it was new.
Rather enjoyed this and I was happy to listen to it twice. All very atmospheric and backgroundy, but sometimes that's fine. The general groove was pretty cool throughout and I'd put this on again if the mood was right.
I found it enjoyable; I like this kind of music. 3.5* so I guess 4*.
O thought I hated them at the time, possibly because Missing had been so bloody ubiquitous. This was really good. Maybe a tiny bit 'coffee table sophistication' but the mix of breakbeats, downbeat and lovely vocals made for a great album. Wrong and Walking Wounded stand out.
It's good to hear techno that isn't very EDM like. Lots of mellow but powerful songs.
cool i guess
Very good album!
Bonito, como suelen ser sus canciones.
I heard a lot of similar qualities to his and the genre of trip hop, for which I enjoy. I was happy and surprised that I enjoyed this so much. I definitely would listen again. The beats were really good and I liked her voice. A couple of the songs went a little tad long or weren’t my favorite. “Big deal” was one of the ones I least enjoyed.
Downtempo tecno. Venga, un 4.
Title track is a banger, i love jungle beats sm. especially chillhouse. This reminds me of OSTs from old playstation and nintendo games. THIS is good electronica. Spacey and atmospheric but not without some punch drum kits that keep the track from getting boring.
Infectious rhythms. Atmospheric. Smooth, cool sound throughout. Such a dope vibe. Have never given much thought to this genre but after hearing this I’m interested to hear more. Best: wrong, before today, walking, wounded, the heart remains a child MMM: I want your love🕺🏽🥁 and I want it nowww😮💨💯
Really pleasant listen - bonus Todd Terry remixes, as always, elevate this music to a euphoric plane
I vibed with it
Downtempo tecno. Venga, un 4.
Bonito, como suelen ser sus canciones.
Definitely something I have to be in the mood for. Luckily, I was indeed in the mood, and I enjoyed this quite a bit.
A great electronic album with house & jazzy elements. Beautiful vocals by the lead singer, Tracey Thorn, and excellent mixing by Ben Watt. If anyone wants to know what the late 90s sounded like, this is it. Glad to hear they're putting out a new album 20+ years later. It'll be a nice welcome back.
Very stylish and sophisticated. Nobody used synths more tastefully, which mitigates against what otherwise would sound seriously dated. This is somewhat slight but bonus points for understated refinement and the pure class that is TT's voice.
Smooth jazz with an electronic flair. Never listened to before but this brought such a nostalgic feeling over me. The vocals are rich and beautiful and the tempo, while moody and chill, still has quite a groove. Perfect music for perusing a mall or cruising around at night time in the 90s. Fave Songs: Before Today, Single, Walking Wounded, Big Deal
Downtempo? Trip-Hop? Nah. This genre of music is called Mushroom music. Proper Fungus funk. Mycelium madness. Toad from Mario? He loves this shit. Listens to it every day. It's like Portishead but slightly less toadstoolish than that. Whereas "Dummy" sounds like being lost in an underground mushroom cavern, this sounds more like frolicking in a whimsical fungal forest.
p787. 1996. 4 stars Classy ambient/electro pop with a great voice. 1 point deducted for some (most) of the tracks sounding the same.
This is really excellent - her voice with the electronic background works so well.
4/5. Honestly a pretty solid pop electronic house album. No Portishead or daft punk, but a nice in between. Great background music but in a good way.
I absolutely adore EBTG, but mostly for their 1988 album, Idlewild, which is one of my top 10 all-time, most-listened-to-straight-through albums. So even though I had never heard this album before I was positively predisposed to like it. I was not disappointed. I wish that I had discovered this in 1996 when it came out. I would’ve listen to it a lot over the years and I can see listening to this again and again. It’s definitely not perfect though; it’s a little too percussion-forward. On a couple of tracks they really went crazy with the drum machine. But in some ways that’s period-appropriate for the mid 90s. It sounds like music I would’ve heard at a club in New York when we lived there in the 90s. My guess is that was the effect they were going for. I still like it.
This feels like an essential UK dance record. I can hear a lot of Jamie XX in this. Even where I don’t hear influences in sound, I hear influences in spirit. Like certain elements of LCD Soundsystem, Avalanches, Justice and other indie-dance progenitors. I’m really fond of “The Heart Remains a Child.” It comes at a time in the record when the tone of the first 3 tracks, though great, is just beginning to wear a little monotonous. Track number 4 (aforementioned) introduces me to a different side of the duo and perks me right up. By “Big Deal” that feeling of monotony and sameness creeps back. But again, “Mirrorball” takes a step in a different direction. Some indie hip-hop beats. These beats make for some pretty nice beats to study/chill too. This seems to be in a conversation of sorts with that Style Council album we did recently, Café Blue. Where that album is a punk band becoming a soft jazz-y indie twee act (with a twist of hip-hip; “sophisti-hip-hop,” if you will), Walking Wounded finds a soft jazz-y indie twee act turning that café into a house party. And like that project before it, I love where new musical experimentation lands this established duo. Of course, against Café Blue, this album is significantly more coherent, tonal, and intimate. Not only do Tracey Thorns and Ben Watt introduce new musical elements into their craft, but they also achieve a profound poetry and beauty in doing so. The Toddy Terry mix is worth mentioning too. And it might reveal why the main-album cuts tend to wear thin on me over time. I think what I’m wanting from some of these house numbers is for them to be even housier. Like, if we’re gonna turn this coffee house into a club, let’s fully do it. I love that vibe. But then again, Omni Trio’s remix goes too far and I’m missing the coffee shop. It’s a delicate balance. And Everything but the Girl really walks the line quite beautifully. Of course, it’s also a line they themselves drew as they walked. A line for any and all 21st century indie dance acts to follow. In closing, the indie-r tracks are my favorite. But the production throughout is pretty spot on and pair excellently with the vocals. This is a unique group and feels to be a pretty influential album. I’ll give ‘er the old 4 stars.
A real question… why do I like this so much, and yet similar versions of this style that are only 5-10% different are almost unlistenable to me? What’s the magic that makes this work for me? The first thing that stood out to me was balance… the elements that might seem dated, that otherwise would irk me, always feel properly balanced with other ideas. Something about the breakbeats, drum machines, the lonesome and somewhat desolate vocal, and the string arrangements… it all feels balanced. It just all works really well together. Where other examples of this 90’s dance, breakbeat style don’t hold up to me, this music is well-served by its counterweights. That’s true in the mixing as well… everything sounds very natural, never too slick. Never cheesy. I had a great time listening. It’s also a clear jumping off point for artists today, some of whom are contemporaries. I think this is great, and genuinely feels like it could have been made a decade later and still be intriguing.
Admittedly, I only knew EBTG for their mega hit "Missing", which I liked but not enough to make me want to check a full lenght LP. It's done now, thanks to this book. And it's really good! For a genre that is not known for aging so well, I thought this one held the test of time admirably. A really nice and varied mix of downtempo, some drum and bass and some gold ol' late nineties trip hop. I'll have to check out their other albums.
Trip hop is usually not my type, but this one stand out. Glad it was part of the book.
Surprisingly great! Trip hop, drum'n'bass and downtempo shit are usually genres that I like a little, but no more. Now, this is a great treasure of this kind of music. The mood is nicely dramatic all the way and the beats are sick.
I expected to not recognise Everything But The Girl as I didn’t recognise the band name. However, the drum and bass/techno sound together with the soft female vocals definitely stuck a chord of recognition. I know Missing by them, but that’s from a different album. Still cool how the sound is recognisable enough to recognise them. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Before Today, Big Deal I quite enjoyed this album. It is certainly a sound of the 90’s, as we don’t tend to get much music that sounds like this any more which is a shame. As mentioned above, the vocals stand out as consistently beautiful, and the techno/electronica/drum and bass music works surprisingly well together with this. It seems like a combination which shouldn’t sound good, but it just does. It’s not an album for everybody as it might sound a little dated to some, but I found this enjoyable.
I really liked this. The woman is the voice on some Massive Attack tracks and I love her voice. Definitely a relisten for me!
8/10
Very cool album! Bit of a poppy Portishead. Interesting listen.
So, so, so far beyond Idlewild that it's hard to believe it's the same artist. I loved this trip-hoppy, downtempo, drumnbass vibe.It fit perfect for this rainy, foggy day.
Swagnb
This didn’t quite click with me the first time but hearing it now the electronic makeover gels well with their signature mellow sound. Just goes to show what repeated listenings can do
Tremendously cool. Sort of a forgotten classic.
EBTG have a simple formula and it works - blissed out beats, beautiful vocals, a smart of d&b drums. There just enough variety to keep the album interesting and I confess I kept expecting each track to break into their smash hit Missing (Not even on this album) but an enjoyable and satisfying record.
Heerlijk, weer helemaal terug midden jaren negentig. Heerlijke flow.
This album most successfully showcased Tracy Thorn's rich vocals in moody yet engaging tracks. One of the defining albums of 90's British electronica.
Mid-college album for me in Northern Arizona enjoying the Southwest and definitely finding all the clubs between Houston and Phoenix. This album was highly relevant for a couple of months in '96 starting in Texas for me and then carrying on for a few years. And a lot of events occurred with its birth that were terribly exciting. It calls up girls in leather catsuits and limos and other things that won't now be transcribed in detail from the thankfully analogue experiences of then to the digital AI superstructure of now. Needless to say, a wonderful pacifying album for some extremely interesting times. I know every song of this like the curves of Schnebly Hill Road or the vintage 70's couches of East Flagstaff or the Kingfisher's bar in Tucson. Mmm. This was a ground-breaking album that erupted and shattered the late grunge era of that year with a fresh sound. And this sound has basically persisted for decades in some genres though never as good as the first time. There is no bad song on this album. Wrong is my favorite with wherever you go I will follow you, but also Mirrorball is a hot track. Bringing back almost a bit too many memories!!
Chill
Quite trippy, but quite good
Vanmetið band. Gott flæði í plötunni, vel áhlustanleg.
I could basically copy/paste my review from the other album. It's my jam, I like it, deserves a few more spins. Faves: Wrong, Single, Walking Wounded
I hadn't listened to EBTG much before and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the electronic production of this album, and it caused me to dive back into some of my 90's drum-and-bass favorites. It has a good range of sounds but nothing that really jumped out at me as a must-repeat-listen track.
Love the woman's voice, and the playoff between that and the beats is fantastic.
I've always loved the song "Missing," but I never dug deeper into Everything But the Girl. I should have. I love Tracey Thorn's voice and I love the music with her voice. I would have played this a lot.
I really enjoy the Everything But The Girl tracks that I already know, and always intended to expand my library...so glad that 1001 compelled me to do that today. This album's tracks have that electronic, dance style is what I know (and like) from EBTG. So, I enjoyed the groove throughout the day.
This is a really nice listen. Played is several times while working today and it seemed ideal for keeping the stress levels down and productivity up. The smooth songs kept making me think of Sade with a dance vibe. Really chilly 90s music that I’ll be happy to hear again.
It's easy to see the artists that were influenced by this sound over the years.
8/10
Excellent
I'm into it
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Hanging tree,
Damn this is not what I expected at all. This is awesome. I really wish I'd listened to all of it before. Concrete high 4.
I acc like
Really liked this. She has a great voice.
Slightly generous 4 maybe, but I like how this seems to naturally fuse pop with 90s electronic music. Very of its time, but feels authentic
Любопытные ребята, мб пробегусь еще по их дискографии.
Good album with some great tracks
Very easy listen with atmospheric vocals and instrumentation. Great for a listen with the lights off or on a night drive. Relaxing in the best way
Nice easy listening, good for background, lounge music. Some great lyrics
Really enjoyed this album. I was familiar with the singles so it was cool to go through and listen to the less popular songs. Love the balanced use of acoustic and electronic instruments. A great album to listen to with headphones… when all else fails, just concentrate on the haunting melodies and lyrics. A great find!
Some chill groovin so far. Definitely a breakup album, melancholy not angry.
Vocals like Cher, but better music in the background. Actually really enjoyed this, good music to work to.
Indeed a classic.
Great vibes and easy listening but didn’t feel moved
Hard to pick favs because they're all pretty similar. // Favs: Flipside / Big Deal Score: Decent 4
I really enjoyed this album, I should start using the notes because I can never remember what to say
90's Techno vibes in this British album. Downtempo and chill pop music that feels like it should be played at the end of a long night out. Glad I discovered this album!
The combo of the rhythm and Tracey Thorn's voice via a pop record is pretty magical. Some great songs here, I look forward digging into this more after consuming the limited Marine Girls material. Fav songs: Big Deal, Before Today and Single.
Super fresh sounding when released, little bit of drum n bass bandwagoning but still a top drawer album
This was good.
This was a slapper, really enjoyed it. great beats and tone
Welkome afwisseling!
Remember my cousin listening back to this in like 2001... I was never big into DnB but this album is so sweet, it's like a mix of the chillest Aphex Twin beats or Shinichiro Yokata with some soft singing Annie Lennox. Fucking rules. And holds up.
I really enjoyed this album. Was not expecting it to be as synthy as it was but I liked that. Reminded me of some other bands currently so almost a timeless sound. My favorites were Before Today and Wrong. Interesting album cover. I'm assuming it's the lady who sings the songs but the band would indicate no women were involved so there is a paradox.
Good vibes
Decent - definitely very 90s
Solid 90s female vocal techno/house.
Good for late night or a rainy day.
Very ahead of it's time
Actually dug it a lot. Good beats and mood, nice to chill to. Give it a re-listen someday to favorite some songs.
Very chill and easy to listen to
Everything But The Girl – Walking Wounded (1996) On Day 125, I checked out an album that I found to be a decent listen overall. The main difference between this project and the usual electronic music I’ve come across so far in this challenge is that it actually has genuine substance to offer. The vocal range is strong, and the groove is definitely present throughout the tracklist. That being said, does it truly deserve to be included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list? Absolutely not. If I encountered this record in any other context, it would have been perfect, but in this particular instance, it just doesn’t hold up to that masterpiece standard. I did enjoy a handful of tracks; "Wrong," "Flipside," and "Big Deal" were solid, but "The Heart Remains A Child" was the true highlight for me the groove and the emotions on that track were peak. It’s a decent, well-crafted LP, but far from a masterpiece. A flat 3/5.
lyrics are
Before Today - 3/5 Wrong - 3.5/5 Single - 3/5 The Heart Remains A Child - 3/5 Walking Wounded - 3/5 Flipside - 4/5 Big Deal - 2.5/5 Mirrorball - 2/5 Good Cop Bad Cop -
Nice
I never ask for it, but if someone gives you a small tub of vanilla ice cream, and then you find the occasional chocolate chip in it, it's a pleasant suprise, even though I'd prefer a chocolate cone, choccy ice cream and flake with strawberry sauce. But this album isn't a chocolate cone, it's a tub of vanilla.
Cool vibes. I was so scared this was gonna be dogshit like every D*ft P*nk album ever made but it wasn't that.
Day904 - nothing stands out on the album and the only song of theirs that i know isn’t even on this album but her voice is pleasant
Приємний альбом, даунтемпо з дрібкою днб, хаусу та тріп-хопу. Початок класний, а далі трохи на мій смак перетворюється в фоновий прикол.
Correcto
Niet slecht, maar ook een beetje saai
This band sure changed a lot between its fourth and ninth albums! Like this just fine, but…gets a little drony end repetitive and all the songs sound the same, so it doesn’t really add up to much of an album. 3.25 stars
I was not expecting them to sound like this for some reason, I might have been confusing them with the Cardigans or something? Not my genre really, but a good listen. 3/5.
Ok. Kind of boring after a while
This is pretty and I love this genre but there are so many other albums like this I’d choose over this one
Like an upbeat Portishead. A few songs on this album have a slow jungle feel which is really cool. Also it's giving a 2000s vibe which I enjoy.
Is this singer the same from portishead? The vibe is so 90s, and if the rhymes were tighter, I'd jive with it. But I don't like songs that lazily try to rhyme occasionally. Either do it or don't please. 3
This album has an extremely of-the-times vibe. It was a nice change of pace from some of the other albums we've got recently. But overall, it was just solidly good - and not great.
Im sure this is someone’s favorite album. It’s very good, well written electronic singer songwriter type beat, but it just got so samey for me. I always get bummed when an album sounds good, I know I’m supposed to like it, but it just bores me into submission. It’s good! Just not for me.
Wasn’t expecting much Remember being bored shitless by them as a kid. It’s super of it’s time but now as a 40 year old man I really see the appeal. Not sure I can do too much of it but the songs I do like I’ll definitely listen to again. Solid 3 out of 5. Favourite track: single
Liked this album much better than the first Everything but the Girl album I listened to.
I didn't feel too particular towards what I heard in any specific way.
I'm not sure what to make of this. On one hand, it's quite enjoyable. On the other hand, I feel like Portishead, Massive Attack, and even Sneaker Pimps or Morcheeba did this better. It's just not good enough to be a 4, but a very re-listenable 3.
use this in a movie if you need kinda sad but kinda horny vibes with a good 90s beat
Huge glow up front their boring adult contemporary 80s sophistipop album. Ripping off Portishead was a great move for them - this is has great loungey easy going drum and bass rhythms, downtempo atmosphere, and a moody sultry trip hop feel. Mellow and laid back lazy morning, come down late night, focus on the computer style stuff. Extremely dated but in an endearing way.
Everything but the Girl has quite an interesting history: formed in the early '80s, they spent fifteen years making soft pop music with jazz elements (like Sting or Seal). One of these themes was remixed by Todd Terry for a house remix, which became more popular than any of their songs before. It's no surprise that the duo decided to rethink their approach to writing music. It's not as if they've forced it: the vocalist's voice still sounds soft and slightly melancholy, like something out of a James Bond film soundtrack, but now it's set to a blend of bossa nova, trip-hop, and techno. While the music of trip-hop masters Portishead might make you want to look out the window at a rainy street, here you get the feeling of a taxi ride through a night-time metropolis. A decent record that's suitable for listening to both in a crowded nightclub and in the privacy of a small apartment.
This was okay.
Unique and interesting. I really liked the first two songs, but some of the other ones fall flat a bit
This was an ok album not too crazy but not the worst I've heard, nothing really stood out to me
i already know how this is gonna go! Before Today, a bold, vulnerable, gorgeous song, is going to sit in my brain for weeks, i'll return to this record and peel back its layers of dnb/downtempo (things i'm pretty averse to) to find the warm and wounded hearts of all the songs. i mean, Tracey Thorn's voice - what a wonder! a 3 for that voice? yeah, i know, it's stupid. but for now, the productions a serious roadblock. these sound like bad 90s remixes of wonderful songs, and while i am very enamored by many of them in a way, i can't embrace them fully. as with "dated" records i love by bands like Prefab Sprout and the Blue Nile, this one will reveal itself to me in time, but for now, a 3 :/
Listened on Friday, forgot by Monday
Non-offensive trip-hop. I don't mind it so much. It is OK.
This was different, I liked it!! 3.5
Alright, however would believe you if you told me it was just one track. Seemed like it dragged on for a bit too long but the music itself is alright.
very nice. chill.
I much prefer the earlier sophistipop of the band, but ultimately their strongest asset is Tracey Thorn's voice. She delivers, as usual, and the album is good despite the 90s drum and bass elements that so many UK artists adopted.
When this music plays in the background, I feel much cooler than I actually am. But afterwards, I have no specific memory of what I heard, just the feeling. There's a place for music like this, I think.
Pretty big gap between how much I liked Single and the rest of this. Background beats were a little too busy in first half
Is Everything But The Girl (E-B-T-G) Japanese?!? I can find no evidence of this, so IDK what's up with the album cover. Maybe they're just Sailor Moon fans. 'Missing' was on the radio all the time, but that's not on this album. However, it had a common misheard lyric ("like the deserts mystery" vs "miss the rain") that I mention here because I thought that song was actually from Sting (because of 'Desert Rose'). Been a while since I had a classic switcheroo! As for what's actually happening here: it's fine. I like the trip hop elements, but several songs sound a lot like 'Missing', which I never liked that much. I guess it can get a 3.
A pre-Portishead trip hop vibe with a more pop, disco feel. I particularly liked Flipside, had a nice chill atmosphere.
Like Portishead but 50% more dance music influenced and 60% more shit
This is ok but hope to see Amplified Heart in the list.
Consistently good band over many years. This lp is consistently good.
Fantastic vocals juxtaposed with extremely meh 90s synth backing. Found the contrast a bit odd, and as a result the music just didn't really click with me. Not got a huge amount to say, no individual tracks stood out, it's all largely the same thing. The vocals were consistently good, the backing was consistently naff. Would be content to have it as background, but "unremarkable" is the only word I can think of to sum this up.
잔잔한데 테크노한게 인상 깊음. 박자를 엄청 잘게 쪼갠다. Chill한 바이브가 있음... 테크노, 하우스 팝이 요즘 좋아서 꽤 맘에 든다.
Not sure I fully understand the shade that's been thrown these guys' way. It's a perfectly polite and listenable electronica album - maybe a touch unremarkable and the sort of music you'd hear on the old Sky TV Guide menu screen, but hardly a poor offering. The vocals are genuinely lovely, anchoring the instrumentation well. It's not a particularly upbeat electronica album which I guess does relegate it to a fairly narrow niche in terms of when I'd put it on again, and it is very attributable to its time production wise through the programmed drums and synth textures, but I don't much mind that. Apparently this isn't the only album they have in the 1001 list, which seems a tad excessive.
The Good: We’ve got everything but the girl… The Bad: We kinda wanted the girl more than the boy… The Ugly: Uncertain where the wound is which we are walking around with… It’s all so casual… isn't it? Walking wounded… Like it’s nothing… Like it’s applying some lip-liner… Anyway, the music… what can not be denied is that Mrs Anything But The Girl has a terrific voice. Boy oh boy, she knows how to sing. Mr Anything But The Girl, well, he knows how to sport the jacket he’s wearing… right? For me this is mid-90s lounge music, perfect for an afternoon of easy drinking, followed by a night of heaving boozing and some kebabs at the end… Anyway, that was the young me. The old me got bored of the music pretty fast… So, here’s bored me giving the most boring score I can think of, without insulting them spectacular vocals… 3*
The electonic backings are far more interesting than the cocktail lounge stuff they made before, with some trip-hop, some mild drum 'n' bass and occasional bits of house. Not sure about having two remixes on an album though
Probably a 4 but I relistened a lot
I have a soft spot for everything but the girl. I always thought they had a great dynamic. It’s always late night mood music to me. And they have been in my peripheral vision throughout the different incarnations of their career. They’re cute and moody.
Really fun, and extremely chill. Very easy listening which I appreciated.
I got nothing out of this. Generic pop, not a lot to say. Decent vocals at least.
This was a real cool album. Reminded me of Sade. Almost ambient.i liked it
Tracey Thorn has a beautiful, sultry voice reminiscent of Sade. It's her voice that gives life to otherwise low-key electronic music from Ben Watt. There was nothing objectionable about this album, but it didn't bowl me over, either. The title track, Wrong and The Heart Remains a Child are decent.
kenn sie vom todd in the shadows, sie hend meeega en sound. ihri stimm isch super. die erste zwei songs bis etz sind chli en hiwiis dases chönt chli eitönig werde. the heart remains a child isch sehr cool. sie singt sehr eige mengmol chli froschig. es isch scho alles seeeeehr sehr sehr sad und down. finds insgesamt en coole sound aber s isch scho au afoch melancholisch und macht eim truurig. ok dass e version vo corcovado druf hend isch huuuere cool.
ohaaa before today tönt für mich iwie moderner als es isch huere schöni stimm wrong tönt jz für mich scho vill meh nach 90er, s isch chli leer iwie? single isch au recht reduziert aber das passts für mich wieder sehr! schöne song und erinneret mich chli ah portishead würkli suuuper song the heart remains a child isch gitmer chli de r'n'b-vibe vode 90er, najaaa funkyyy ahfangg vo walking wounded allgemein gaht de beat recht ab, mengisch chli too much für mich hmm jz verschwümmts chli zu einere masse ok d remixes ghöred offiziell zum album? wrong findi na cool hends chli meh e "dance-version" gmacht, au wennsmi jz au nöd umhaut s ride bim letschte remix findi recht hot megaa cool ahgfange und denn recht abgeh. 3 oder 4?
- Pretty good ... It's hard for me to put this one into context without looking up what else was released around this time ... which I don't have time to do. SO, I'm not sure if they're leading or following with this release. Regardless, it holds up but it's not earth-shattering. 3.5 -
Mellow sad 90s electronica, great concept, but it does not last for an entire album without being a bit boring.
Weirdly I quite like the way this threatens to be a house/drum and bass album in places but never quite gets there. Can see why they became easy pickings for DJs to turn their songs into dancey classics.
Un buen álbum con un electro bien de los años 90 un poco sostenido el ritmo, es decir que veo poca habilidad. De todas formas crea un ambiente armonioso y bueno.
Instrumentation was nice. Vocally strong but lyrically repetitive.
2.9 stars.
Ég fílaði Idlewild vel, en þessi er pródúceruð svolítið eins og Portishead án þess að passa bandinu alveg. Ekki leiðinlegt, en ekki grípandi.
not.bad
Funnily enough, I think only really knew the remix version of Walking Wounded. Still a good album - my kind of level of laid back and funky.
3.5
european clubs
fun!
5/10
smooth background music
chill'd and light
pretty boring uninspired music.
Not going to say it's the worst album, because it's far from it. But definitely one of the most boring
Chill drum and bass. Dido-vibes at times. Nothing was very catchy or stood out in a major way but was decent to have on in the background.
Great beats, terrible vocals and writing. Sorta fine as quiet background noise, but not much enjoyable when paying attention.
Tracy Thorn has a genuinely powerful voice — warm, melancholy, and completely distinctive. On Walking Wounded it's the constant that holds everything together, and it deserves better than what surrounds it here. The mid-90s drum and bass-inflected production that made "Missing" a surprise international hit becomes the dominant presence across the full album, and for this listener at least, it works against the songs rather than serving them. The programmed drums and synth textures create distance rather than momentum. What should feel intimate — Thorn's voice is built for intimacy — instead floats in a slightly antiseptic electronic framework that pushes the music toward background listening rather than genuine engagement. It's not that the production is poorly executed. It's that it keeps pulling attention away from the thing that actually matters. There's probably more depth here for a closer listen, and the fault may be as much about fit as quality. But a record that consistently recedes into the background rather than demanding attention has a fundamental problem regardless of its craft credentials. A broader observation feels appropriate here too: the 1001 Albums list is generous in what it considers essential, and Walking Wounded is a reasonable example of that generosity. Historically interesting, competently made, and not something most listeners would reach for as a desert island record. A fair three — neither terrible nor truly essential.
Fair
Great background music but nothing stands out to me to want to regularly replay.. hard to rate these types of albums
A bit too EDM-y for me but I did like the vocals.
Sounded a lot like Sarah MacLachlin
I liked that a lot more than I thought I would
Quite interesting to see that Atmospheric Drum and Bass dates all the way back to the middle of the 90's, with records such as "Timeless" by Goldie and this one, when I mainly associate it as a 2010's/2020's movement. While this album has in common the infectious beats and the heavy ambience sense created by the ethereal melodies, what sets it apart from today's scene is that it is very influenced by the trip hop and down tempo movement from that time, while nowadays it is heavily inspired by breakcore. What this record takes from trip hop are primarily the pop sound and the style of signing, which is very similar to Beth Gibbons' one, the singer from Portishead. It is very smooth and soulful, specially in moments such as in the very moody "Single". However, she doesn't reach that same level of incredibly passionate and emotional singing that Beth Gibbon has, and I''ll even dare to say that it is a bit monotonous, as the vocals melodies in all the songs are very similar. So while I liked a lot of what this record is going for, specially its cold feeling, this monotony I just mentioned is something that I have a problem with, in addition to not being the most immersive material I've ever heard.
Cool songs with cool vibes wish I could give it a 3.5
I understand why people like it. Good energy, fun music. Not my style, but I appreciate it.
90s music - just 😑
Today’s album was Walking Wounded by Everything But The Girl. When I saw this come up I wasn’t particularly excited, but it actually turned out to be a really enjoyable listen. The first two tracks are very strong. Before Today and Wrong both stand out straight away with great music and solid lyrics. It starts the album off really well and pulls you in. This is very 90s in sound, really chilled and easy to listen to. It’s the kind of album you can just have on and let it run. My only issue is the lack of variation. As it goes on, a lot of the tracks start to sound quite similar and it loses a bit of impact. Favourite tracks: Wrong and Before Today are great songs and make for a very strong start Least favourite tracks: There isn’t a bad track on here, it just becomes a bit samey as it goes on Album artwork: I remember this cover from my youth, still a good one
Lekker voor op de achtergrond. Would listen again
I remember first hearing of them through Missing from the previous album, and I think I remember hearing Wrong from this one. I remember seeing this album cover art a lot. But the rest of the album was just ok.
Parts the album have sounds that I think were interesting for the time (1996) and even today -- percussion with heavy reverb, good mix of strings, etc. It occasionally reminds me of Bjork. Other parts of the album are more soft-rock and less interesting. The vocals are good too, though maybe a little monotonous. I think my favorite track is "Single". For me this falls just short of a 4.
The backing music feels a little more interesting and robust than the other album by them that we've listened to, and the vocals are nice, but the album has a sound that, maybe, 4 songs in, I was ready to move on.
I wanted to like this more than I did, solid 3, nothing I really dislike about it, but also nothing I really love about it
Enjoyed
Pretty standard 90s music somewhere between the chill synthpop of yesteryear and the shoegaze to come.
Her voice is very flatline for me but can be great background music.
Very enjoyable listen.
Nostalgic
I don't care for the genre so I found it a little boring and too long but the production is really great.
I like the songs more than the way they sound
It was ok. Some of the electronic vibe was good urm yeah quite strong at some parts but mostly just meh.
really mood and time dependent. i only liked a remix and that it's sad in some way
Lovely album with WN’s take on American standards.
Maybe this was not the best move to hear this album at 5am in the morning when I was pulling an all nighter, but hey I can still confidently say this project was a bop and a half. While I don't think this is a particularly great Downtempo project all around, I will say when this project hits it really goes off in some really interesting directions. It should come as no surprise that I found Before Today, Wrong, and Walking Wounded my favorite tracks here. I also appreciate the group putting two remixes at the end of their album that feel very fitting for the more House sound they are going for, but they really aren't all that great compared to their excellent Tracey in My Room - Lazy Dog Bootleg Vinyl Remix which absolutely clears Wrong and its' remix here. I really respect everything this duo is going for here but I just don't see their vision fully, only small pieces that come together nicely and a couple underwhelming tracks to fill the runtime. Again it has its' moments but overall I was left wanting more than what these two had served up for myself.
LO FI BEATS TO STUDY AND RELAX TO [10 HOURS] [NON-COPYRIGHT]
This record was quite interesting. It's like an upbeat trip-hop, which I think is pretty nice to listen to. Favourite Track(s): Before Today, Wrong, Flipside Least Favourite Track(s): Single
Not exceptional, completely average and makes for good background music. It feels incredibly of it's time.
Do I Like Being Single? 1001 Albums Generator 236 (2/26/2026) What an awesome, eye-catching alum cover. I have no idea why there's random Japanese text, but it really works. The music itself is this downtempo, and at times DnB-sounding, chilled out electronica. Songs like Single have this really depressing energy, which is unique for an electronic album. Before Today is definitely the best song. What a way to open an album. It's atmospheric drum and bass of the highest caliber. In fact, the first three songs are all really good, and relatively eclectic for what they are. The title track and Good Cop, Bad Cop are also a good slow building atmospheric DnB song. However, Mirrorball is extremely kitschy and does not fit in with the rest of the album. The second half generally is not as special as the first half, which is a shame because I was thinking this album was gonna be really underrated on here, but I feel like it's pretty accurately rated. 3/5. Favs: Before Today Wrong Walking Wounded Least Fav: Mirrorball
It’s alright- chilled and smooth but a bit samey
24/02/2026 1. before today - really nice. kindof like electronic/dnb cocteau twins? lovely vocals... nice! 2. wrong - synth sounds a little more dated in this one... really love the vocals again... love how it's building up throughout. three and a half mins in and it's getting a bit stale now... 3. single - slower... saxaphone sample? chorus is reminding me of the tracey beaker theme??? losing my attention towards the end. *4. the heart remains a child - like the strings? synths? reminding me of tv girl. acoustic guitar is really nice. *5. walking wounded - liking the string-like synths :) really loving this one. the vocals are beautiful with the synths. kindof orchestral. love the echoey vocals. beat is really nice as well, especially in the chorus. *6. flipside - had a break after the last song and really liking this one so far. like the scratching. like the vocals as well. 7. big deal - again, sounds very dated at the start... not really a fan of this one. do not like the sound effect that keeps repeating. 8. mirrorball - again, sounds dated. not liking the slower songs as much i don't think... more like generic 90s pop, not massive on it. 9. good cop bad cop - liking the buzzing(?) sound. nice beat. bit boring though :/ not listening to the remixes at the end, sorry! really liked before today and walking wounded especially, but some of the other tracks sounded a bit too dated (not in a good way) and were a bit boring. nice to listen to though, definitely wouldn't complain if it was on, but wasn't really moved by it either.
Immediately thought of the XX with the female vocal and electronica vibe. It's an easy listen. Nothing to be super excited about but nothing terrible either. 3/5.
This is fine. She sounds a lot like dido or something.
This is definitely music to listen to while at GAP or American Eagle. I gave the first Everything But the Girl album in this book (two?) a "2" because I found it somewhat boring and forgettable. This album is less forgettable and not as boring, so that's progress. I enjoyed the band's conversion to a more electronic sound, as it seemed to lively up (a bit) the songs and didn't make them seem so dreary. The front half of this album is much stronger than the back half of the album, so I can't say I would recommend this as a must-listen album. If there HAD to be an Everything But the Girl album in this book, which apparently there must be since there are two of their albums, then I would choose this album to be among those that I need to hear before I die. Most likely, I would die because even with a gun to my head I don't think I could justify the selection of either album. My favorite tracks: Before Today Wrong Single Walking Wounded Good Cop Bad Cop
