Reviews (page 4 of 8)

This is definitely music to listen to while at GAP or American Eagle. I gave the first Everything But the Girl album in this book (two?) a "2" because I found it somewhat boring and forgettable. This album is less forgettable and not as boring, so that's progress. I enjoyed the band's conversion to a more electronic sound, as it seemed to lively up (a bit) the songs and didn't make them seem so dreary. The front half of this album is much stronger than the back half of the album, so I can't say I would recommend this as a must-listen album. If there HAD to be an Everything But the Girl album in this book, which apparently there must be since there are two of their albums, then I would choose this album to be among those that I need to hear before I die. Most likely, I would die because even with a gun to my head I don't think I could justify the selection of either album. My favorite tracks: Before Today Wrong Single Walking Wounded Good Cop Bad Cop

This was a fun listen tbh!

The missing link between Sade and Rhye

A little dull at times, but a decent album. 3 stars or C+.

Laid back lounge techno boring somehow, but then vocals that make a difference

in the 90s we had this and now we have bershka house music

Like their earlier stuff better.

cool drum and bass songs

That was an album that had some DnB and other stuff on it as well. Not really much to report on my end

This was alright in the background. Never really took off for me, but it was a better use of D&B than most for me. Meh 3.

Pleasantly chill album. It has a couple of somewhat catchy songs. Not the most exciting thing ever, but I was able to vibe with the soundscape. 7/10

Fascinating record in many ways given a fairly radical change in sound that was maybe designed to latch on to the success of the Missing remix. It largely succeeds but is less engaging than Amplified Heart before it

Tracy Thorne’s voice is too ethereal boardering on boring. The album was okay though.

Female-vocal electro-dance

Best Song: Wrong - Todd Terry Remix. Finally on this track the electronica felt like it was written to augment the vocals, rather than compete with or distract from it. Worst Song: Big Deal. Every 8 seconds or so, there is a noise in the background that sounds like Yoshi taking damage. The whole song, Yoshi's just getting battered. Overall: A weird album because I really liked the vocals, but felt like the glitchy beats constantly got in the way of my enjoyment of said vocals. Put another way, this group seems like it would be most interesting if they got rid of Everything But The Girl.

FAVO: Wrong, Walking Wounded, Good Cop Bad Cop

This feels like a foundational electronic album but it’s okay

Favorite Track: Wrong

Holy 90s Batman. Similar sound to Sneaker Pimps and early No Doubt. Album had some melodic tracks but nothing that really stood out to me.

I didn't dislike it. But it started sounding too samey for me. That being said, the vibes are very specific if you'd like to shop at Forever 21 (RIP).

Egentligt et ok roligt og behageligt album

It's nice background music, though I'm not sure I'd listen to it again.

When I saw today's album was 2.5 hours, I strongly considered pausing this listening project for a couple of days so I could listen all the way through. But it's only 9am and it's my day off so I have no excuses to listen all the way through in one go. By Wrong (track 2), I am convinced that even though I have never heard of this band, I have heard them and their disciples in Kingston's Bentall's Centre in the early Noughties. Single (track 3), and I wonder whether Dido is one of said disciples. The last tracks are live, and have dragged up both the rating and opinion of EBTG. Hearing the songs performed live and hearing the audience adding clicks and whoops makes the songs more enjoyable.

Whilst not the most consistent, catchy hooks and introspective lyrics throughout the album made it a pleasant surprise.

Eh, I guess this was kind of boring to me

Chill ambient 90s chill house...liked it more than I thought I would 3.5

Didn’t mind this

I can see the appeal, at the start it wasn't for me but it had won me over at the end. Such 90s vibes

sounded like sade with electronic music. hypnotic.

Nice chilled house

Tracey Thorn’s voice is wondrous and I am a slave to the beat, but the production is less eclectic and absorbing than their contemporaries (see: Massive Attack/Tricky/Portishead etc). Textbook definition of Fine.

Hull Uni goes to Bristol

This was really good! The vocals really helped elevate this from background electronic to something I thought was engaging. Curious to hear more from this group.

I think I've heard enough drum & bass by now. Mirrorball was quite cute.

Chill. It's not exciting in any way, but it's also not bad in any way. Good atmosphere ambient beats.

Enjoyed a few songs but overall, didn’t do a lot for me

YABA!!! Yet Another British Album :( More 90s british music -- but will THIS one be any different? ... Ok, don't hate it as much upon listening to it. Kinda reminds me of the xx. Listenable (that's like saying food is edible), but not outstanding.

These slo mo vibes are very 90s nostalgic. That's the good. It just never gets to a climax of any sort. Always pissing about, Dido-ing all over the place. Joni Mitchell, this lass is not.

More lesbian make-out music from the 90s. It's fine. It's boring, but it's fine.

It was fine. Another album that probably requires some nostalgia factor to rate higher.

Merry Christmas! Heard that one Christmas song many times before but did not expect to hear it on here. Not really familiar with this group but I really enjoyed this album. Similar UK sound to the Beautiful South whom I love.

Dvi su puse dainos paklausiau nezinau koki reitinga is to duot bet kaip sakoma pirmos dainos turi parodyti viso albumo energija tai man visai patiko toks chill su savo light spiciness man patiko

ambiance bien, détente

Sympa en fond

Not unpleasant, but slower/sadder vibes than I prefer

Idk, fine just kinda boring. Nothing I hated, but nothing I loved

This is background music to me. Nothing about it really stands out as exceptional but it isn't horrible either.

I only really knew missing from everything but the girl even though they are from near where I grew up. This is nice. All the songs sound like missing, but it is a chill sound. Her voice suits it really well and the breakbeats remind me of massive attack or portishead, or even a bit of David gray. My wife liked it. I liked it, but I didn't love it. It felt like nice backgrounds music.

not bad

I had never actually heard of Everything but the Girl prior to today, but seeing "electronica" in this album's genre tags definitely made me perk up! Although I'm mainly doing this challenge to hear albums/artists/genres that have historically been blind spots for me, it's always a pleasure getting to listen to some new electronic-influenced music – undoubtedly one of the more underserved niches here. Walking Wounded was an interesting one to begin my EBTG journey with because it seems to be something of a transitional album for the duo – they started to play with more electronic elements after Todd Terry's "Missing" remix became a massive hit, but they also weren't yet making full-on club music (like they would on 1999's Temperamental). The result is a unique LP that feels like it has one foot in each camp and it sort of works! The opener "Before Today" is an excellent example of what Walking Wounded sounds like at its best – it instantly hooked me with its chopped-up breakbeats, soulful vocals and atmospheric keys. The title track and "Good Cop Bad Cop" hit similar notes, to great effect. "Wrong" is a more straightforward house cut, but is a quality tune nonetheless. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you've got tracks like "The Heart Remains a Child" and "Mirrorball," which aren't bad per se, but don't do much to stand out from the plethora of '90s soft pop available. I'm certainly not the first person to bring this up, but EBTG's influence on a certain English trio is strongly felt here – I felt like I was listening to the xx for like half of Walking Wounded's running length and this album came out 13 years before the trio even started releasing music. Romy's vocals are extremely similar to Tracey Thorn's, so if you're a big fan of this album, her dance-influenced solo album Mid Air is a must-listen. Overall, Everything but the Girl's ninth studio album is solid – it's not quite consistent enough for me to give it a four star rating, but it feels like a strong three with a handful of songs I'd be happy to come back to! The two remixes at the end were a nice touch as well, since remixes rarely ever show up on core album tracklists like this (though these ones honestly came across as slightly weaker versions of the original tracks to me). Highlights: Before Today, Wrong, Walking Wounded, Big Deal, Good Cop Bad Cop

I listened to this on a sleepy morning commute, and the chill vibes really suited how I was feeling. I really like the singer's voice on this (kind of reminiscent of Dido). Overall pretty good, but perhaps a little boring. I can't really see myself reaching for this album to listen through from start to finish again. If I were in the right mood there are other albums I'd pick over this one

It's all right, I guess. Not special

Really wish there were half ratings because this is such a 3.5 album. It’s fine, I think it doesn’t do anything that stands out, but I like it overall

I didn’t mind this one at all, it’s got a cool vibe. I like this one much more than Idlewild.

EBTG are great. This one’s from their electronica phase and features the usual good songwriting to go with Tracey Thorn’s lovely and characterful voice.

This music is out of my wheelhouse and the fairest rating I can give is down the middle with a 3/5. My experience is more of a 2/5 rounding up, which is what I rated their earlier album contained on this list. But I was probably more grumpy after hearing that one because I listened to the whole thing. Next!

I feel like the Walking Wounded after this album. I feel like I was gunned down with mediocrity.

soft electro

Background music.

i think that was fire, not sure though.

Ok album.

Hmm , ok in places

It wasn't really what I was expecting. It had a lot more electronic, house, big-beat sounds when I was expecting instrumentation. Still nice though, very easy listening, nothing that made you wince.

Fun but not an essential album by any means.

It all blended together to me, though it was nice to listen to.

first song was good then got bit bored - very 90s club music

Chilling out

Smooth, jazzy.

Yet another "fine" album from the 1001 albums list - enjoyable enough, easy to tune out though, and nothing really jumped out at me especially with this being their second album I've been assigned. This sounded more like....Eurythmics-y than I remember the last one being? And overall more poppy. I'm not really sure it's doing enough heavy lifting to be on here but maybe I'm just unaware.

It's decent. You do fall into the vibe but could do with a little variation

Miles better than the other inclusion.

Benefited from its juxtaposition with the Fatboy Slim album. I also must confess that I always confused them with Swing Out Sister despite the two having little in common. Perhaps it is the singer's hairstyle? In any event, apologies to EBTG.

They had one nice song, which isn't on this album, and recorded it over and over, so it felt like it was.

Dad- NA Mom- 8 Mike- NA Lori- 5.5 Michael- 6 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 6.5

Cool album great vocals good songs but just ok for me

Es bien popero. No me vuela la peluca

This was pretty good if you like heavy rhythm/dance beats. I thought the first album (Idlewild) was better.

what a voice trac has suits this style of music

Cool. Definitely heralded in an interesting style which likely impacted pop for years. Mix of other influences, but really active and interesting take on the moody and breathy vocals.

I thought this was a really fun little album. Love the techno beats in the background and the lead singer has a nice voice. 6/10

I remember Everything but the Girl as falling into that particular genre of music to play on CD at 80s dinner parties - low key and unlikely to upset any horses or maiden aunts. This album was a little more interesting though, tending towards trip hop/electronica (with a few restrained breakbeats) paired with Tracy Thorn’s smooth and slightly fey vocals. Solid, middle of the road easy listening.

Solid listen. In the vein of massive attack and other 90s low-key dance pop

stereotypical nightclub music 3/5

I dig. Found a new favorite

Protection is one of my favorite Massive Attack songs, but nothing here really stands out. There isn't anything bad here, just nothing that great. I do like this one better than their other album on this list. High 3.

It's vaguely trip-hopish. I like some music like this but honestly, this did not make much of an impression. It's fine.

6/10 This album was created off the back of a massively successful remix of ‘Missing’ from their previous album, and it continued a change in direction for the band. This was indie pop going electronic, and to my ears they did it reasonably well. The first thing that came to mind here for me was Lamb, whose debut album came out the same year as this. There are also elements of Portishead and Massive Attack in there too, amongst others, but unfortunately, this album doesn’t enjoy the same quality and subtlety of composition or production as those other groups. While some of the production is very good, it does kind of sound like they are feeling their way through the production, rather than being full comfortable with the change, and from time to time it does feel a little bit in limbo between the two worlds of sound. There are some nice bits of programming, but I found these moments often didn’t develop enough, and the songs often felt a bit stale and repetitive by the end, especially as the instrumentation was often pretty sparse. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. It was good background listening, and was fairly engaging in places, although it did have lulls here and there. Looking back, I also didn’t find anything particularly memorable about any of the tracks and, ultimately, I didn’t feel that there were that many really good hooks to rival Missing, so while it was enjoyable enough for a few spins, I’ll probably revert to my trip-hop favourites rather than revisit this any time soon. Before Today - This is good. Reminds me a lot of the more poppy end of Lamb, although this came first. The drum programming is good, in particular, but the rest of the instrumentation is a little thin. I enjoyed it, but wish it developed a little more. Wrong - There’s a bit more going on here with the pads in the background and a few more melodic elements. It’s a bit more of a basic house beat, but it moves things along nicely. Again, there’s not loads of development across the track, but it’s a decent pop/house track. Single - This has got a bit of a darker trip-hop flavour to it and her voice sounds great. The production is sparse but really good here, with elements floating in and out, but never overwhelming the vocal at the forefront. In fact, the whole thing is pretty sparse but in a very pretty, vibey way. Really nice track. The Heart Remains A Child - This is a bit more throwaway pop. It’s still got the more electronic beat to it, but this is a fairly mundane indie-pop song. It’s reasonably well written, but ultimately fairly uninspiring and forgettable. Walking Wounded - This one was written by Spring Heel Jack. They certainly love a snare rush. I think this type of skittering drum programming can be really great, but it feels both a little overdone and also lacking a little in variety here, which is a shame. This just feels a little disjointed in places. The core idea is pretty good, and some of the sections are really good, but in places it just feels a bit try hard. Flipside - This is pretty good but feels pretty dated, particularly the little spoken bits. The production is more full, although there’s not too much variety, which is a shame. I quite like thee double-tracked vocals, but it does sort of drift after a while because of the repetitiveness. Big Deal - This is good again. It has that sparse, dark trip-hop edge to it again. It feels like they’re trying to force a a hooky chorus into this one, but it’s just not really grabbing me. I think the vibe is great, the production is really decent too, but it’s just not engaging me in the way that better songs of this style do. Mirrorball - Back to a more trad 90s indie-pop song, with slightly too aggressive electronic elements. This would be a better song with more subtlety to the production, but the blend isn’t great and it’s another fairly forgettable pop song. Feels like there could have been something there, but they just didn’t pull it off. Good Cop Bad Cop - This is another decent one. Again, quite Lamb-like, but not as well executed. Some of the beat programming is great, but it still feels a little limited, and while the main hook is decent, I don’t think there’s enough range or subtlety in the track for it to stick. Wrong (Todd Terry Remix) - Ah, the old 90s trick of sticking a couple of club remixes on the end of the CD. The original track was quite dancefloor oriented anyway, so maybe a slightly odd one, although it’s definitely got a more club vibe to it. Loads of reverb, piano arpeggios and a four on the floor beat. Classic 90s, but not my bag. Walking Wounded (Omni Trio Remix) - This one’s quite boring. A repetitive drum beat, a fairly thin composition and the vocal being so spread out over the track, that most of the time we’re just listening to the repetitive break, bass line and a slow pad. Meh.

Soft vocals over some lo-fi, downtempo beats. Never heard of this duo, but sounds like they had been around for a bit by the time this album released. Don't know what kind of legacy they leave as a result, but they seem to have given electronica more of a pop presence here and I know electronic dance music was burgeoning in the UK around the time of this release. It was a slightly above average listen, carried a bit by Tracey Thorn's vocals.

Kind of Sade vibes.

Very nice background music. Almost meditative. 3.5

Interesting trip-hop and electronica influence 90s art pop.

I thought this would be irrelevant electronic music when the first song started but it was a pretty nice listen

Nice atmosphere. A little same-y and a little too lush, but I enjoyed the sound of this. Best song: Wrong

A lot better than I was expecting. The singer, Tracey Thorn has a nice voice and the songs were good.

This marks the first time I have listened to Everything But The Girl since i handed my listening history to last.fm in 2006.

Decent 3

Meh! I don't see what's so good about this album that warrants its inclusion in this list. It's not bad, but it's not great either, and it's a bit boring at times. Overall, I preferred the tracks with lyrics written by Tracey Thorn over those by Ben Watt, "Wrong" and "Single", for example.

Very 90s pop

3 Stars (8/15)

Everything but the girl and the drum n bass. 6/10

Not bad, but boy did it make me sleepy.

She has a terrific voice, but the songs are pretty unremarkable.

This band flew under my radar, pretty chill music but nothing spectacular

This one is kind of a nice, chill vibe. It does KIND of sound like one continuous track, not a lot of straying from the formula as the album winds through, but fortunately it's a pretty decent formula.

Enjoyed, nothing stand out but would probably listen again. Nice ambient background music 3*

A bit bland

Thorn has a beautiful, distinctive voice, and it’s always a pleasure to hear her sing. The music itself can feel a bit repetitive, but it works wonderfully as background listening.. which is exactly why I’m a fan of this album.

I hated Idlewild so much, I was shocked that this one was fine. It's not good, but I didn't feel the need to turn it off.

Inoffensive mid 90s nostalgia. I can't go higher than 3 stars, but I also can't go lower than 3 either.

Chill. Meditative.

Before Today - 3/5 Wrong - 4/5 Single - 4/5 The Heart Remains a Child - 3/5 Walking Wounded - 4/5 Flipside - 2/5 Big Deal - 4/5 Mirrorball - 3/5 Good Cop, Bad Cop - 4/5 Wrong (remix) - 4/5 Walking Wounded (remix) - 3/5 Average score: 3.5/5 (rounding down)

Nothing crazy, nothing stood out to me. Pretty good overall tho

I remember liking this when it came out. I like it a little less now. Tracey Thorn has an incredible voice though.

It was fine.

i tend to give higher ratings to electronic albums, but something here didn’t catch me. 3.5/5

Liked this one, type of depressing drum n bass from the mid 90s that I loathed when younger but now find amusing because of its ultra short temporal frame.

It was a nice mix up, vocals and lyrics were really nice, but I do find the same drum ans base gets so repetitive. It was cool to zone out too but not a greatest of all time album for sure

The soundtrack to a chill out room in any mid 90's dance club, chilled enough to cool off but not too downtempo that you'll start thinking about winding down for the night, better go order some shitty beer (for some reason it was always Rolling Rock) or a vodka and coke, take a few puffs on a joint and then hit the main floor again, revitalised.

Not bad. I love DnB and there were some good beats here. The singing was nice, but some of the lyrics left a little to be desired. I wish I could give it a 3 and a half, but I'm not feeling a 4.

Not memorable to me

Mirrorball was my fave… maybe it’s bc I’m a swiftie

All I knew from them was their US hit, "Missing," so this was a tremendously pleasant surprise. Tracy Thorn's voice is amazing. Over top of the electronica, it works so well. I could definitely see using this for lo-fi background music.

Nice vocals - but got a bit boring after one disc.

It may have slapped at the time, but all of the trip hop I’ve heard since made it blend together in my mind. Good background listening, but not something I’d seek out.

lovely

This was fine. Very peaceful and calming. Some good/fun beats. Very laid back. Not a bad listen. Actual rating....2.5. Liked Songs: "Wrong" , "Single" , "Flipside" , "Mirrorball"

Enjoyed the music, it's different and is of my time so there was some nostalgia. All of the songs sound samey and familiar, but none are actually the song you know . It's nice to chill to.

Girl, get over him. I jest, but I do think I would have enjoyed this album more if the lyrics had been a bit less sooky. I did enjoy the very luscious electronic sound and smooth singing. A strong 3.8.

The found the other Everything But the Girl album pleasant and inoffensive. This one was similar but not as nice to listen to. Low 3.

5/10 - it was worse than the other everything but the girl album. But I liked that one and this one’s just ok

Quite chill

This was a pleasant surprise!

it was okay like

Undoubtedly would be a grower, the repetitive rhythms and TTs voice almost guarantee this. However it feels less inventive than their earlier work.

Pretty decent

Good ambient sound !!

2.8 Pretty bland tbh. Time capsule into 90s electronics, some beats sound fresher than others. The vocals over the top are okay, but after a while start to sound all the same. Average beats, average vocals, average album.

Wasn't bad but nothing made me want to listen again. Solid one and done.

I was really surprised when I saw the year that this came out. Their sound was ahead of its time imo.

Hard to rate. Really of the time, and the genre is one that is "worth remembering" but the album was a bit forgettable. I feel like I could have listened to a few tracks and gotten the point.

Enjoyed, mellow and recorded really well

TIL what chill house is, it sounds good, and chill, but I need some energy!

Some beautifully delivered ballads (Mirrorball is especially lovely), I'm not entirely sure the breakbeats are the right backing on a couple of tracks though. Still, another winner from EBTG.

Not bad but nothing I’ll revisit

It was okay

Nice background music for a restaurant that serves artisanal cocktails and small plate gastro explorative seafood foam

Good for speeding in rainy weather music.

I think this album is a bit of a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I really like the overall mood — that late-night, post-club comedown feel. There’s a sleekness to the production, all that polished drum and bass and trip-hop, that feels very of its time but still holds up in places. Tracey Thorn’s voice really carries a lot of it. There’s something cold and detached about it, but it works perfectly with the kind of stories she’s telling — lonely city nights, emotional numbness, trying to hold yourself together under fluorescent lights. I found myself zoning into tracks like Single and Before Today, which both hit a nice balance between melancholy and groove. But I do think the album starts to blur a bit as it goes on. The beats become a little too clean, the emotions a bit too controlled. I respect what they were trying to do, and for what it is, it's very well-crafted. I just found myself drifting in and out of it — appreciating the atmosphere more than actually connecting with it. It’s a record I’d play when I’m walking at night with my thoughts elsewhere, but not one I’d reach for when I really want to feel something. I like it, but I don’t love it.

Pretty solid. Reminded me a lot of Frou Frou. The album started out strong and got me in the groove, however towards the end of the album it started to feel much too repetitive. Still worth a listen.

Not sure what genre this falls into. Breathy electro-pop? Enjoyed the vibe, not really my tempo, but still good

A slog of not quite techno

Smooth, not that exciting.

really good production. for something in a genre that i dont listen to its well done. the lack of variation between the songs makes the long runtime feel even longer. additionally the last two songs are just different mixes of the two singles which don't feel like they shouldve been on the original version of the album

Better than the other EBTG albums I've been subjected to here.

Always thought “great name for a band”. Music…meh.

Sounds like a white 90s version of Sade with trip hop backing sprinkled in.

Ah my first trip hop… this was smooth and beautiful and relaxing … extra points for sorta reminding me of the genre I hadn’t listened to in quite a while

Have had listened to this a few times over the past few days - and whilst its a pleasant and easy listen very little of it stuck with me. Tracey Thorns' vocals are distinctively haunting and really carry the album with the backing mostly trip hop by numbers. Quite telling that its the remixes that tend to bring the EBTG tunes to life. Fav song: Single.

I always thought that EBTG fell between dance-music for disaffected high-school drop-outs, and nondescript ambient chill. What's more I found their single 'Missing' unjustly ubiquitous - an underdeveloped demo of a monotony, that was played over and over. And the woebegone Tracey Thorn bearing a passing resemblance to Pete Carter, was the final straw. But I have changed my mind. Although not about Pete Carter. The fusion of stoic yet haunting vocal against drum n bass beat and little else, turns out to be a rather nice marriage. I imagine it as perfect soundtrack for scenes from BBC dramas about professionals in the city, where a lone protagonist walks the streets of London post-club, it's already getting light and she's looking beautiful but disheveled, carrying her heels, feeling sad about some heartache or other. The album is too long. 'Flipside' for instance feels a dated throwaway that shouldn't have made the cut. 'Mirrorball' is like that Spice Girls one about their mums. But a fine album of hangover electronica.

Fine. Didn't hate it but pretty unexciting. Good singer to be fair.

Mostly not good but a couple of songs that kept it alive.

I should like this album because I generally like this electronica type music but it was rather unremarkable. There were only two songs that I was like, "Oh, I like this." The rest felt like elevator music.

Nothing quite reaches that haunting vibe they got with deserts miss the rain, or anything portishead does. Not bad, but not great

I didn’t hate it, but the fact that every song sounds exactly the same is a little bit off putting. It’s ok, but nothing more.

The only track I've known by Everything But The Girl is 'Missing', which has strong nostalgia vibes for me - but oddly isn't featured in either of the albums on this list despite being their most popular track - quite literally it's Missing. I didn't mind this, and I really love Tracey Thorns vocals - but the beats feel fairly basic and I guess its just a bit dated.

Sorta dancey. Not groundbreaking for me but feels like 90s Gap/ Old Navy Music. Not bad background music while I cleaned up after graduation

I’m not a huge fan of trip hop, and thus not a huge fan of this, though it does feature some cool samples and nice vocals, though. I guess I don’t want to hear the XX in the club. Standout track is: “Flipside”

Sort of inoffensive background music - not bad but that is all I can really saw about it.

Neat albun

I have never heard of this band so I was going in blind. I must say it is a mellow album but I am kinda digging the ambient music this album offers. The singer has a beautiful voice and it moves well with the music. Lyrics are about love, loss, and heartbreak for the most part. I can’t say I would listen to this album over and over but it’s good. I will also admit I fell asleep listening to it the first time but that ambient sound just relaxes and put you in a place of rest. That can be a good thing depending on your mood. Favorite songs include “Wrong” “Big Deal” and “Flipside”.

Much prefer this to their more acoustic stuff. Some great songs here (the singles) but found some of the rest a bit formulaic / obvious.

An OK album, but it feels very much of it's time. It's easy to forget how EBTG went from folkie heroes to drum 'n' bass cool kids, almost overnight. It was a change they had to make; the folk noodling had run its course. And so here we have Walking Wounded. It opened up D 'n' B to a wider audience, albeit heavily diluted. I still like the songs and the overall feel of the album. But I'd rather look for something fresh if I've got my horn and whistle crew hat on.

Relaxed vocals over some chill electronic. It's not danceable for me to really love it, but it was a very approachable listen.

Pretty decent for someone singing over Drum'n'Bass... But I really don't like Drum'n'Bass.

I had mixed feelings, it was definitely unique and specific to them. It had some deep emotional themes, but I was in a more positive mood so I don't think it hit as well as it could have on a different day.

good if you like music you don’t need to pay attention to

Nice, but then it went on and on

fine 3/5

Lovely vocals and crisp production, but a bit too 'easy listening' for my taste to warrant a re-listen. Needs more low-end.. but that's just my take.

after trying to keep myself awake and thinking this sounds like that deserts miss the rain song but only longer and more miserable I discovered this is that band. This is an unremarkable album that smacks of 90s coffee shop schmaltz - and not in a good way. 2.5/5

Not incredible, but inoffensive chill electronica with good vocals

This was very generic sounded like Sade singing over an electronic drum track. This did not sound influential or moving at all. It was fine but is an insult to other three star rated records here.

The first two songs started the album off well, but then it just kinda started getting bland from there and running together. It's not bad music, and it is very trance-like, which is a genre I like, but falls a bit short.

Not bad for a electro-trance type album. Songs went long sometimes. Didn't hate it but didn't like it much either. Not a fan of drum n' bass stuff really. Mirrorball might have been my favorite song.

4/30/2025: chill electronic 90s vibe

Pre-listening thoughts: I know nothing about this group actually Post/during listening thoughts: this sort of reminds me of Madonna’s Ray of Light in some ways. Idk man sometimes I can vibe to this but sometimes it’s really painfully 90s. 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Mirrorball Least fav tracks: Walking Wounded

Love ballads over dance beats. This is not a genre that I emotionally or physically connect with but I don't have much negative to say about it. The beats are clean and just dynamic enough to not sound overly repetitive. The vocals are smooth and skillful.

Started sick but got boring quick

This is a pretty good introduction to that late 90s trip-hop scene. It's not as fully-formed as the likes of Massive Attack or Portishead but fits nicely alongside them, and it admirable in its' attempt.

Easy listen, neither great nor terrible.

Calm, soothing, relaxed, velvety voice – actually pretty cool and interesting compositions. But electronic music like that isn't really my kind of music.

Not bad. Meh

This was cool. Kind of fun dark low-fi sounding pop. I definitely recognized a few songs, which was fun. I also just kind of got bored with it. Definitely chill and easy to groove with.

= the Beatles Relaxing

This was fun but there is a better album of theirs on the list

twee d&b > twee indie

This was very 90s dance club pop. This was alright but felt like a filler album.

Good voice and good beats. From what I'm reading, this is a band that changed a lot over the years, so I don't know if this is really representative.

vibing to this one, nice trip hop sounding songs, good to drive to

I remember constantly seeing posters for Everything But The Girl in Tower Records whenever I visited, but I never really got into them. Their music was always fine, but never reached full enjoyment. Hearing them again decades later with this album, I still feel the same way. 3.25/5

HURJAA…. Ja jaha eli 3 star annettu.. noh

Like the beats, especially the remixes. Classic chill.

fine. Overall didn't grab me.

You can wear this to work or to the club. Listenable and danceable. Sadè-like (but not Sadè, of course). It’s a 3.

Growing up I always wondered what music my dad was listening to when it wasn't classic rock. This album is probably one of the ones he listened to. Unfortunately it's just okay to me and makes me think of late 90s early 00s tv shows.

A... reasonable inclusion, I guess. For Music of Its Time. Not bad, really. I'm a bit surprised even, how much (muted) DnB there is on this, as I had not quite filed EBTG under that. But on the other hand: it's just... there. A slim, open booklet on the coffee table. Ticks off mid to late 90ies downtempo electronica boxes in a pleasant way but doesn't seem to be interested in doing more than that. [...] Rating day and it's not looking good. Trying remember anything, songs, melodies, of what I heard yesterday and I'm drawing a blank.

The first 3 tracks were great, after that it really started to sag into 90's popslop, only for it to really pick up with the final 2 tracks again. The Drum n Bass parts were nice and unexpected. The singers voice is really pleasant and reminds me of all the music that was on the radio in the late 90's and early 2000's. I can't place or recognise any of the songs here but they sound vaguely familiar in a way. Could've been a higher rating if more of the songs were like Before Today, Wrong and Walking Wounded.

Two songs in, I like it, a little trippy, dancey. Echo's of Annie Lennox and Beth Orton. I guess it is of the times.

not my normal listen but nice background music

Doesn’t really grab me. Okay enough but just a bit background music-ish to me. Fine enough to just put on and chill I guess.

The lyrics are pretty good. The music is… there are a lot of sounds and stuff. Not my favorite thing. Starting to think it would be embarrassing if you were British and released an album between 1967-1995 and it wasn’t on this list. Wrong is a decent song. Don’t think I’ll be returning to this one.

A completely unknown group for me. Nice singing voice and I like their style. A good album overall.

Great concept, not my favorite version of this kinda record.

Such a tease whenever the more drum n bass inspired tracks teases what could have been been. The kasseguitar and female vocals tracks that ruin this whole adventure is such a shame to an otherwise cool album. Before today Big deal Walking Wounded

1. Flipside 2. Before today 3. Walking wounded

The vocalist sounds a LOT like Sade, but without as much as soul. The drum n bass really worked for the album, even though it started to sound a little same-y to me. The album worked for me, although there wasn't one song that overtly resonated with me (maybe the title track). Top tracks: "Wrong," "Flipside," "Walking Wounded"

Another Everything But The Girl and still no Missing. I'm not sure why this album got on the list as opposed to their previous big album Amplified Heart. The sound is similar except that they leaned heavy into electronica on this album (i.e., sold their souls to it after the success of the Missing remix) and it's their first self-produced album. But so what? Other artists gained control of production after a recording contract ended and other artists have done electronica. Tracey Thorn still has incredible pipes and that's the biggest redeeming aspect of this album. But the tracks themselves all sound the same so Ben Watt has more work to do on the instrument side. Fine, trade your guitar for a computer and add in more drum track, but vary the tempo. It was like 40 minutes of background music you'd hear in an elevator, hotel lobby, dentist's office, or trendy mall clothing store. It's not awful but it's boring. Uhh-tiss, Uhh-tiss, Uhh-zzzzz.

An okay bum but only flip side really stood out.

Nice chilled music. Not sure I'd go back to it but a good listen.

This one is MUCH better than the other album of Everything But The Girl on this list. Stripped back the songs flourish more.

I liked this more that Massive Attack’s Blue Lines. It’s still a bit one dimensional and no real stand out songs.

Elsewhere I've gushed about Everything But the Girl. With Walking Wounded the sparkle loses some of its luster. I think my heart only has enough room for two of their records despite finding Tracey Thorn's vocals to be a particularly welcome balm whenever they come on. For me this album is caught in the trap most artists I like struggle to get out of: "more of the same, only now it's no longer new" — only the rare few produce more of the same that is somehow still exactly what I need. I realize this review is much more about my psychology than their music, but isn't every review on this page an expression of this truth?

Melodies/beats are too "crowded" at times, it's overwhelming.

Not bad, pretty chill - another one that reminded me of Portishead. No real standout tracks, though, and kind of boring.

I was quite surprised with the level of drum n bass in this, or definitely the more upbeat dancey tracks, only with mellow vocals put on top. It does work and it's quite nice. I never really checked these guys out back in the day beyond knowing the singles. It's the kind of thing I might be into, I just found it wasn't particularly engaging. The album seemed to pass me by somewhat, but it was a nice background listen.

Not bad, but kinda unmemorable

Enjoyed.

The girl’s voice evocatively interplays with the boy’s production well enough, but everything commingles in such a way that nothing truly stands out.

This group is too often slept on but they have a really good combo going with a chill vibe, solid beats, and female vocals. I didn't know all of the tracks on this album but I immediately recognized their sound because so many of their songs are used during warm-ups in dance classes. I think, aside from their big hit "Missing" which got radio play, that's how most people know of EBtG. I was teleported directly back to 1999-2002 with this one and I loved it so 3.40.

Ok EBTG, you caught me off guard. Pretty good album but Thorn really makes it work. Without a lead woman on vocals, this would just be a mediocre techno album. Top track "Flipside" and was good enough to make my reoccurring playlist. I enjoyed this more than Massive Attack's and Tricky's album showings of similar genre...bit more upbeat. 2.6 stars.

I'm not sure Everything But The Girl did anything overly special in this but sometimes simplicity and sticking to what you are good at works. On face value I probably shouldn't have enjoyed this as much as I did. However, it was a really pleasant listen that sucked me in for some reason. Maybe it was just the time of day but something struck a chord with me and I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. 3.47 stars

Quite an enjoyable album. Nice vibes. Will definitely listen to this artist again

3-3.5 I don't remember it much tbh but it didn't bother me

Pretty vibey, but also repetitive.

I’ve been enjoying this kind of album a lot lately!! Didn’t hit quite as hard as some others I’ve heard but very danceable and pretty!!

Pleasant, inoffensive and a bit dull. I really want to give this a 2.5 and I’m pissed off that the likes of this is on here and the masterpiece that is Massive Attack’s ‘Mezzanine’ is not

Decent quite easy listen. Soft core dance with trancy female vocals 6/10

Great background music.

I listened to this in the middle of nowhere Arkansas in a log cabin while making an apple pie. That’s probably never happened before. I liked the first three songs, but then it lost me. It went free m cool and fresh to redundant dance jazz. Weird.

Fav: The Heart Remains A Child Least Fav: Big Deal Thought the vocals were pretty boring

Favorite song: Wrong

I had not heard anything from Everything But The Girl except the one hit they had several years ago. The music is a bit basic in terms of the beat but the vocals kept me hooked.

Slow drum and bass with rampant late90s nostalgia. Probably as good as it gets when that's the intended output.

I really love Missing and I know Wrong is on this record so I was looking forward to listening to more of their output because I was hoping it would sound like that. Unfortunately this is a bit of a bore in comparison to their biggest hits and is just watered down elevator music drum and bass... I wish it did more with the cool breathy vocals but it really doesn't. This was sadly a bit of a disappointment but I'd give another EBTG record a shot, maybe it's just this one that isn't that special.

'I've never liked Everything But The Girl. They've always been too "lite" for me. However, when I heard Tracey Thorn singing on Massive Attack's "Protection," I have to admit I was impressed. A year and some month's later, I was impressed again when I heard that EBTG had changed their sound to a more dance/trance kind of thing, thus creating more "Protection"-esque soundscapes. It works out fine, too, surprisingly. (And, for the record, I'd also like to mention that anything's better than another EBTG folk implosion.) Thorn's vocals are stunningly sweet against a drum 'n' bass backbeat that can either put you right to sleep or shock you awake, depending on your mood. Only thing about this future Lite FM staple, it gets pretty boring at the half-way mark. If there were only some sort of change in tempo or something...' -Ryan Schreiber, for Pitchfork (1996 - full review). Looks like the sort of review you could find on this app. Except this one was penned by an (at the time) up-and-coming critic who eventually managed to get paid for writing that sort of thing (in a better form elsewhere, admittedly). Just Imagine getting paid for writing your daily reviews for this app... 🙃 Don't totally disagree with the content of this specific, so-called "professional" review however (except for the sly dig at the band's "folk implosion" from previous record *Amplified Heart*). *Walking Wounded* is better than the quite blurry memory I've had of it, honestly, at least if you take out the overly bland "Mirrorball", and maybe also "Wrong"'s cynical attempt to replicate the formula of the winning dance remix of previous single "Missing". The drum'n'bass instrumentation in the other cuts does sound strong and legit, though. And Tracey Thorn's vocals are wonderful. It's just that beyond those clear assets, the songs often go on for too long, overstaying their welcome. Or they feel a little "safe" and predictable in the long run. FM lite indeed. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: 20 (plus the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past versions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions) Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 421 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 251 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 312 (including this one)

Not bad but definitely one of those "why is it here?" albums

i honestly thought i was going to love this but it was simply just ok

80-tals pop.

I had never heard this album before though I think I may have heard Everything But The Girl a couple times randomly in the past. This album was not really as strong as others from the sort of mid-90s trip hop/drum and bass genre. It was fine but it was just sort of background music. I didn't hate it, listened to it while working and it was totally fine for that. Nothing in the music really distracted me from whatever else I was doing, it was just kind of playing in the background and was certainly serviceable for that purpose. I wasn't excited to get play this one again but neither was I really itching for it to be over. 2.5/5

first listen some good vibes but a bunch of the songs were dumb

They had been around since the early 80s. They adapted to the ever changing trends. To be fair, they could have done a lot worse. It sounds sincere, not a pathetic attempt to stay relevant. Nice cross section of the popular EDM styles of that era. They were not leaders of any of them, but they cherry picked something album worthy, while the leaders were too one-dimensional. Favorite song: before today.

A completely fine, 28 year-old, adult contemporary album. Won’t last long in my memory.

It was fine! Very 90s sensual

this album is for people that like freaking it sensitive-style!

Generic mall background electronica from the 90s. meh.

very pleasant, very 90s, wow

Not one I've listened to before. It was alright. Pretty low-key just a touch of a hip-hop influence. I'd listen to it again.

Good tunes to have on while trying to concentrate. It was ok.

some good tunes. This passed me by at the time and will need more listens to get a full feel for it.

Very good

Not objectionable. Easy low listening.

I was surprised by this one - pretty decent.

Thorn has a lovely voice and their better work has been on songs with traditional structures. I get why bands try new musical styles but ultimately this genre dumbs down all the music. Definitely liked it better on second listen though it drops off a bit.

Very lo-fi. Easy listening, but not something I would actively seek out

Better than what we’ve had recently but still not very compelling

Nice dance album. I would not have pegged this for the 90s

Very nice to have a coffee and bagel to.

Very 90s chilled out background vibe, not bad but a bit dated

Went in completely blank, had only known the "desserts mystery" song before which isn't actually on this album. Was surprisingly OK, I assume this is either from the early wave or the start of a DnB era. Felt like lots of DnB influences throughout and I quite liked that! 3.5 really.

before today- 4 wrong- 4 single- 4 the heart remains a child- 5 walking wounded- 4 flipside- 4 big deal- 4 mirrorball- 5 good cop, bad cop- 3 boring. brring brring

Solid, but a bit boring.

Very 90s

In my head I always thought Everything but the Girl were regional pop for parents who couldn’t move past cassettes so im intrigued that this is here So it turns out it’s a very 90s sounding tranc-y effort, which was pretty good.

Really good

It could be argued that no songs on this album hit quite like the Terry Todd remix of “Missing” they’re trying to emulate, but Walking Wounded is still a good time portal back to the late 90s. The title track is particularly good.
