Reviews (page 3 of 14)

Ahhh, jaki to jest świetny album!

Anthem of my youth 5 - near perfect album

Coincidentally I had to the urge to listen to this yesterday! So listening through it two days in a row (well, except for Killing In The Name, I just don't like it, it's overrated) brought me back many years when it was in regular rotation. I still remember the summer of 1993 when my friends and I first heard about that band with that Bombtrack song, and then getting into the album was a revelation. This is the sound of a band firing on all cylinders. And it's crazy how every lyric is somehow more relevant today than they were 34 years ago. Playlisted: Take The Power Back, Bullet In The Head, Fistful of Steel

They were telling us what all honest people now know and rocking as hard as anyone has ever rocked while doing it. Tom Morello’s guitar work is at its creative peak. I also forgot that Maynard James Keenan is on “Know Your Enemy”. Could this possibly be his only appearance on this list? Would still be a crime, but better than nothing I guess.

Has to be one of my personal favorite albums from the 90s. Rage came out and took the world by storm and opened a few eyes of dormat people on the way. A new music not peaculfully protesting but showing a violent revolution against the powers that be. Solid as fuck an album all kids should listen at 16-19 years pf age maybe they can grow a brain listening to this instead of being indoctrinated by the system.

Goddamn does this record still sound great. Take even Bombtrack on its own — a minor song — but the way it *growls* Rage into the world in '92 is exceptional. It sounds like an angry V6 revving without a muffler. Even more than Evil Empire — probably still my favourite, even though I have little appetite for this music now — they sound like a single ferocious instrument on this record. Truly exceptional.

Best Song: Take the Power Back There are some insanely good albums that came out in 1993 and, in my humble opinion, the Rage Against the Machine debut album is the best one to come out that year. That isn't knocking anything else that came out but this is one of the best and most influential albums to come out of the 90s - and is still conceptually valid which, in the world of music and politics, is a feat in itself. There are no bad tracks on here and too many that could be considered the 'best song.' 5/5.

Fuck yes Amazing again how applicable this is, fighting the exact same fight 30 years later. I'll always be amazed that this was perceived by the right the way it was, hmm

très kiffant j'adore

Oh my fucking god exceptionnel purée. Je m’en vais détruire le capitalisme de ce pas. Cover iconique, rifts iconiques, voix iconique c’est fou

Excellent album!

Forgotten how good they where

Another no-skip album.

Me when I see AI-generated art or music

Glasklare Nummer!

goated record

Raw, angry, and a masterful mix of rap and hard rock coupled with a powerful and still relevant message

All Timer x2

Great album

Really good! 9/10

Shit yeah. 5 stars

Tom Morello's guitar work is insane; you can hear it a lot on Fistful of Steel I didn't expect to like this as much as I did, as a 1992 predecessor of Nu-metal, and debut album, I expected it to be much messier. This is very coherent and works well for an overall "protest" theme to this album. I couldn't really find misses, but rather things that were forgettable, although each track had highlights great standouts like Bomb Track and Killing In The Name, or even the mostly instrumental Freedom. A great first Rap-Rock album with absolutely insane cover art that matches the theme. Feeling a strong 9, and it definitely holds its own against my 5s, so I think it'll be there.

I have not listened to this album from start to finish before tonight. They picked the perfect opener and closer IMO. Bomb Track and Freedom are the stand outs and are under played.

The beginning opening rift is very good. So is Know Your Enemy. Very good. 10/10

MEGA!!!!

The primal scream of a generation

bangers!! no skips! wow! really enjoyed this

Es mi estilo

Already know it cold. 10/10 album, have never grown tired of it.

I had heard a few of these songs before -- some were obviously huge hits, but I had a little exposure to this album before, so I remembered hearing some of the non-hits. I absolutely loved every minute of this. It kinda blows my mind how amazing all of the members of RATM are at their respective instruments. Zach's palpable passion and cutting vocals, plus Tom's amazing catchy and punchy guitar riffs (which sometimes sound like no sound ever produced before -- amazingly), plus the awesome bass and drumming... It's really something amazing that I honestly feel in awe of and thankful that we even got to hear it. This was awesome and I listened to the whole thing twice. Five stars, easily.

BANGIN

Peak angry music

Brilliant album. Loud and raw anger. Very appropriate for what is happening now with US imperialism. "Ignorance, brutality, hypocracy, the elite."

Awesome record

Album still holds up but it's funny listening to it after growing up and listening to what a nerd Tom Morello is, talking about starting revolutions from his little SiriusXM studio

Top 100 album all time for me, don't know what else needs to be said about this record. Totally seminal rap rock record. One of the hardest records ever. Long Live ZDLR.

Great industrial album with intense political commentary.

Positive anger

This still hits hard.

Aivan tautisen hyvä, kuten muistelin. 5/5.

Been a long time since I've listened to the album in full, holds up excellently

Great commute album

Non stop bops

Love it

Such an timeless classic

Fuck yes!

Probably top 5 favorite albums for me. It changed 12 year old me’s life.

Awesome debut album. This is in my regular rotation.

Sairaan kova ja yksi suosikki bändeistäni. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Best angry political band?

Holds up

If I had to run through a brick wall this would be my soundtrack. Fave tracks: Bombtrack, Bullet In The Head, Know Your Enemy

Epic album, didn't realize it had so many 90's hits

Great!

RATM are the shit! Tom Morello is not the best guitarist in the world, despite what some might say, but the riffs he chugged out for this album slap. This is an unmistakable killer debut album. Full of powerful, genre fusing, raw political angst. Zack's vocals are gripping and heavy. It's a sound revelation. How dare you give it less than a 5.

Great album

Love music with a message.

Heard this tons of times before Bombtrack - 5/5 Killing in the Name - 5/5 Take the Power Back - 5/5 Settle for Nothing - 4/5 Bullet in the Head - 5/5 Know Your Enemy - 5/5 Wake Up - 5/5 Fistful of Steel - 4/5 Township Rebellion - 4/5 Freedom - 4/5 Average score: 4.6/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Best possible example of an album everyone needs to hear. The message is as true today as it was in 92.

Awesome

The album that spawned a hundred inferior rock-rap bands. Not sure if the sub genres ever got more perfect than this - maybe Battle of Los Angeles gives it a run for its money, but I think it’s still not as strong. Not sure if a sub genres ever ever showed up in a single album so perfectly and completely.

had me jumping off the walls as a kid 10/10 of course

as a whole i loved this album, every song rated atleast a 7/10 with them all having their own unique aspects. the lyrics are extremely political and as they should be because everything is political. an absolutely amazing album

Great album, not the usual one of RATM that I listen, but enjoyed listening to their first album

Raw and heavy

oh fuck yes its raw, its hard, its catchy, its brilliant and unfortunately still very relevant. looked to see if they had any more stuff on here but sadly not, been wanting to listen to all their stuff at some point anyway. 2nd 5

Such Machine, Much Rage

Music that makes you go "hell yeah"

This is one of those albums that is just so unique and so perfectly encapsulate the energy the band tried to create. I literally could not think of a better name for this band, nor this album and it's themes, than Rage Against The Machine. Favorites are Take The Power Back, Killing In The Name, Fistful Of Steel, and Freedom

I like how Zack does his best imitation of a TiE fighter from Star Wars in Township Rebellion. Understanding the political values of this album and Rage as a whole is an important media literacy test that many people fail completely. This is THE rap metal album. Often imitated, never duplicated.

There's nothing here that I don't like.

Rage is one of those bands that I didn't really understand until I got a bit older and started to pay attention to the world. They were always a great sounding rock band, but they're also so incredibly lyrically powerful. One of the first to blend a hip hop lyrical style with heavy rock. Every issue addressed in their music HAS NOT CHANGED in the 3 decades after this album released, which is just depressing. Killing in the Name STILL rings true and is even more true right now with the ICE running the streets, which is just pathetic for the US as a nation. Message is awesome, music is awesome, Zack de la Rocha is a genius, Tom Morello is a genius on the guitar. This is an easy 5/5 album and with that said, every Rage song pretty much follows the same pattern. Repetitive lines, awesome guitar solo, more repetitive lyrics and end with some verses sprinkled in there. It's a simple and predictable formula that only works because Zack and Tom are gods. Unfortunately, the "Rage" against "the machine" is pretty much contained in album form. This album came out in 1992 and could have come out today and would have equally expressed many peoples frustrations. This album is basically a Call to Arms that didn't happen and the social problems of America have only gotten worse. Shout out to the reviewer 2 weeks ago that was upset with RATM's call for violent protest, but is also unhappy with their album cover featuring the ultimate form of non-violent protest. These Boomer Karen's really just are unhappy with everything.

What a powerhouse of a record. Rage Against the Machine is a band that I've known since 10 years or so, and one of the few that I still comeback to this day thanks to how well their energy is preserved in their music. It is incredibly angry, punchy and rebellious. No other band, that I've known of, can imitate the power of their sound. Before continuing talking about their music, I want to mention a personal realization I had. Maybe due to they being associated so much with nu metal, I always thought that the rapping was a result of the influence from rappers with bigger names. But this album is from 1992. It came before some of the most recognized hip hop and rap record such as 'Illmatic' or 'Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)', which I think gives the group way more authenticity than I previously gave it. Probably all of this is just common knowledge, but I think it is so funny that I realized this fact after so much time listening to them. Now, back to the music. As I said before, it is incredibly. When it comes to performances, every member shines in their own way. The bass lines are super funky, the drums are very energetic, the guitar solos and riffs are very unique with Tom Morello's weird techniques and Zach De La Rocha's delivery is just insane. He screams like a maniac and gives the songs an incredibly amount of anger. When combining it with his very political charged lyrics, I just want to get up and start a protest. Another thing that they do very well is ending their songs. Almost every track, if not all of them, have their most angry and energetic moments in their last seconds. 'Killing in the name', 'Bullet In The Head, 'Wake Up' and 'Freedom' have the most remarkable endings. Each one has a crescendo that leads to the Zach screaming his lungs out. Truly timeless masterpiece that captures perfectly the anger towards fascism and regimes.

Still sounds urgent and unstoppable. An explosive classic that remains unmatched in its genre.

As un chic as it is to like this kinda stuff in 2025 I still love it. No one has EVER liked rap rock/metal right? I wouldn't say I do all that much but this is it. The exception to the rule. I grew up with this kinda stuff and it was ok back then but never really my favorite thing. Sure I liked the early Lincoln Park and shit but i wasn't in my jencos kickflipping my element skateboard. This record is about as good as that kind of music gets. The lyrics are there if that's your thing. The vocals are pretty great too. Its got that wubba bubba bubble tape guitar thats really is this bands defining factor. And the rhythm section is so good. The bass and drums are killer actually. They hold the insanity together. There are a couple songs that im not all that into but there is always a part from someone who blows me away. It really is pretty close to perfect. As close as we can get at least. It rocks. Point blank

I already had heard this album but this is literally the best! One of the greatest metal albums of all time! Album cover iconic and all the songs are peak! This is the best album they’ve given me so far. I was saving 5 stars for albums I give a 100 on aoty and I gave this a 98 but if any album deserves a 5 it’s this!

Powerful blend of rock, hip hop and the punk rock ethos. Somehow every song ultimately sounds the same – a good sound of course, but their musical depth always feels pretty surface.

If nu metal were like this it would be an amazing genre: 90s sounding, powerful and groove alternative metal/rock, with aggressive vocals, catchy songs and weird guitar solos. Unfortunately, the following band missed the opportunity and instead took the shitty path. Fuck them. This record is massive. And regarding if it's actually political or is just controlled dissidence: I don't really care. The music itself is amazing, even omitting the political part. That said, it's better to be a false dissent than being a stupid clown saying "People equal shit!" or singing stupid love songs. 9.3/10

Wild this came out in 92, even crazier as a debut album, there's maybe 1 song on here i think is a little less than perfect. In my head Evil Empire was their good album, but I'd give this shit more than a 5 if I could.

This album feels as good as Butters running without a leash.

Obviously

Another one I own a physical copy of. Fucking great album. Personally, I prefer Evil Empire but no complaints here. Was lucky enough to have caught Rage with Run The Jewels a few years back. Great fucking show. Lousy afterwards.

Haven't listened to this one in a few years. Did NOT expect to give it a 5, but goddamn it still holds up.

Music is an exceptional blend of funk, rap, rock and punk that has a unique fingerprint. I don't care for their politics at all but that has very little to do with how I appreciate the music (see guys, it's easy!)

This album is as fresh and as relevant as when I first heard it in the early 90’s. America needs more of this energy right now!

4.5 3x great album.

Great album.

One of the greatest albums of all time!

Anger is a gift

This album was on heavy rotation in my youth. Forgot how much l loved their music

Rally Sauce record for when you really need to hammer off a task

As debut albums go, this is pretty spectacular - and a brilliantly appropriate band name too. I loved this record when it came out and it sounds every bit as furious today as it did 30+ years ago. I belted it out at battle volume (while the kids were at school, obviously) and it sounded great. It still fizzes with a raging energy, and there isn't a single weak moment in the whole thing. It's alarming to think, their message is probably more relevant today than it was when it came out. Nothing else they did ever caught my attention quite like this record - it's really not the kind of thing I listen to much these days so it was great to reacquaint myself with it.

Am amazing Rock album, I love the instrumental parts and the pure hype it hives you while listening Favs sogns - Killing In the Name, Township Rebellion 5/5

This is one of the albums where I wish we had a 10 star scale, cause it's an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me. Going for a 5, because Killing In The Name Of remains amazing but the whole album is consistent and there's no filler. Every song goes hard.

Name ist Programm

Well that livened up an early start on a Monday! Epic album. Demands to be cranked up as loud as you can. I almost consider this to be hard funk at times as it’s got such a groove. And has the best Christmas Number 1 of all time on it! Can’t fault this. 5

Am absolute, genre defining album. From the first moment to the last, you're not with an unrelenting, raw mix of rap, funk and metal. I can only imagine what it would have been like to hear this when it came out

10/10. One of the BEST albums of all time.

This deserves a 5 for cultural significance alone. Killing In The Name is such a banger I remember going on killing sprees in GTA San Andreas as a 7 year old with that playing in the background. Thank you for influencing my angsty teenager years, Radio-X. No skips on this bad boy.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. I can’t recall any other band which produces music evoking such indignation. Other musicians (many contemporaries of RATM) make angry music, but RATM has such an altogether different subject matter so divorced from personal circumstance that it can hold up over 20 years later without coming across as corny like so much from its era. One of the GOAT debuts. Just insane groove end to end. Zach De La Rocha has a delivery that can only be described as vitriolic, and Tom Morello at least one of the most creative guitarists of all time. Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk may not be as notable as the other two but you couldn’t have made a record like this without their contributions. However, I want to know how fucking stupid you need to be to think that this band isn’t political though. Aside the politically motivated self-immolation on the cover, the liner notes include thanks to Huey P. Newton and Bobby Sands. That category of person however is totally eclipsed in idiocy by the individuals which can generously be described as medically stupid who think that the band are hypocrites for daring to not just play underground basement shows to smelly anarchist punks instead of making money off their music.

This really hits hard sitting in my comfortable job, at my desk working the email mines. It’s phenomenally angry without wearing out its welcome. I’m grateful that the empire allowed these guys to exist as controlled opposition, but I do wonder what the world would look like where instead of growling into the mic, Zach De La Rocha is a really angry faculty member at a university. This shit rocked, I’m gonna go watch the yellow Parenti video again. Highlights: Killing in the Name, Bullet in the Head, Wake Up

What a debut. A punch in the face out of the gate. Whether you agree with their views or they go over your head (like me) this is powerful and infectious. The riffs just keep coming wave after wave. Is there another vocalist like Zack? A unique talent. Every member is an amazing musician. Great production. Can’t listen too often because it’s so intense but what fun to revisit.

No comment needed.

Great!

yeah!!

RAW. Nothing but a fury-tinged political manifesto against the capitalist nightmare, those who profit from it, and the police and other institutions who prop it up through force and hatred. While there's much to be said about Rage feeding into the machine through merch sales, tours, and general affiliation with major labels, the fact remains that this is an abrasive and sharp-tongued record that's as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago, potentially even more so.

There are many other reviewers on here who can more eloquently put how important Rage Against the Machine is lyrically, so I’ll let those reviews do the talking there. My review: banger after banger after banger. Tom Morello’s guitar is incredible for a variety of reasons. I arrived at work today about 5 minutes earlier than normal and I’m attributing that to this album.

Frickin’ banger!

2025 and it’s still relevant and we are still having to Rage! Very powerful album still

I've been pleasantly surprised that aggressive music has been covered on this list. I usually don't expect it. Don't let the meatheads who come for "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" distort the overall message.

Good bass lines. Had a good time, high energy. Fav: killing in the name, take the power back, wake up

Made me hop up and down the living room like a true socialist.

So many great riffs here. Tom Morello is a guitar genius. Zack's flows are pretty great too. Favorite track: Wake Up

Repeat listen

Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me

“How Long, not long, cos what you reap is what you sow” A true masterpiece of a debut album, one of my favourite bands ever and stills sends a message that’s as relevant then as it is today.

I have listened to this album so many times. Released during my sophomore year of college, and shaped so much of my headspace. You can feel the rage of Zach de la Rocha pouring from the speakers. My rating: 10/5 megaphones!

Ive been listening to rage so long that I've now become the machine

recht in je gezicht gespuwde teksten die nu meer dan ooit relevant zijn... op enkele goeie gitaarpartijen en drumslagen... beste debuut in jaren!

classic-great stuff

When this came out, nothing this loud, angry, or gloriously anti-establishment was anywhere near the mainstream. It kicked the door open and handed everyone a megaphone. Still feels necessary today, given the state of… * gestures broadly *. A perfect gateway into exactly what they were trying to light on fire.

Looooooove this, banger

The Revolution is already here - it just isn't evenly distributed yet.

Rage Against the Machine is such a unique band that I wasn't entirely sure what I would think. I've heard many songs from this album before (Killing in the Name and Know your Enemy, for two), but I've found even albums that I know some music from have let me down. RATM lands at the convergence of rap and metal: two genres that occasionally overlap, but never quite like this. Zack has a contagious energy, even when he isn't always going for a specific pitch, and the rest of the band went on to become Audioslave backing up Chris Cornell. The music is all full of grit, and the band perfectly performs as a whole band, not individual musicians. For the message the band is sending, this music style is very effective. While the music is a bit repetitive, each song feels like something different than the last.

Ultra classic. Great first album.

Just as relevant now as it was when it came out 10/10

A timeless and incredibly poignant protest rock album. We gotta take the fuckin power back!

I wasn’t going to listen to this album, because RATM was a regular rotation band for me in the 90s and I know what you get here. I wanted to hot take that this album is overrated and maybe a little boring, thirty years later (and I’m still a fan). It’s not. Still great. Anger is a gift.

Someone threw a grenade & BOOM!! the result Rage Against the Machine. Tom Morrello's turn tabl-- wha... that's his fucking guitar! Zach de la Rocha's angry growling & spitting truth about the world. This is a five album easily. BUT the problem I have is with this both ignorance & the fact that none of this ever changes. This album came out in 1992. All the shit that Rage has been spouting out against are still problems. Yeah cool you shed light on those issues but I listen to it in 2025. Same shit, different year. Not to mention, some of these issues, that you bring to light with the subtlety of crowbar smacked to face flew directly over fans heads. How stupid do you have to be to not figure that from the second song on the album? Ignorance plain & simple. I like protest songs & bands but they just seem to land on deaf ears.

Nostalgia: 5/5 Riffs: 5/5, Angry political lyrics that doestn't sound like propaganda: 5/5 Heavy and loud production: 5/5 Maynard James Keenan feat 5/5 Raging against the Machine 5/5

An absolute classic.

LOVE IT! Great pick. Familiar but all time favorite

I don’t think there’s really been anything like RATM, before or since and I’m not sure there ever could be. My personal and our collective fave debut album. I remember seeing the uncensored grainy hand-cam shot video for _Killing in the Name_ back when it came out in late 92 (possibly early 93). I don’t remember where I saw it but it left the 13 year old me wondering what the hell I’d just seen and whether it was something I shouldn’t have. It felt so subversive! The internet not being available back then it took me a few weeks to find out who they were and that they had an album out and it became one of only 4 purchased cassette tapes (along with 3 Nirvana ones) that I owned. With its fusion of rock and rap, still not bettered to this day, Tom Morello’s insane guitar sonics, (“_no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record_”) and Zack’s rebellious, anti-establishment tirades this was like nothing I’d heard and it’s subject matter is still prescient today. I’d have to wait until the Evil Empire tour in 96 before I saw them live but I’ve never been in a mosh pit like it. There were moments I thought I wouldn’t make it out, had to be picked up off the floor a couple of times and by the end my RATM ‘fuct’ tshirt was shredded and hanging off my body. Hands down one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to… what a band!

powerful

Absolute banger album, one of the best of all time and completely timeless.

Rocks so hard. Never really noticed how much funk is in their sound. They honestly do the funk/rock/rap thing better than a band like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who made that fusion their whole identity. The presence of a James Brown/George Clinton influence is probably what makes Rage so good and Audioslave lacking in comparison. Evil Empire is my personal favorite, but there’s no knocking this.

NOW YOU DO WHAT THEY TOLD YA

One of the easiest 5 stars I've handed out and would go more if I could. This is a monumentally incendiary achievement of an album and almost single-handedly invented a genre (that would come to be poorly copied and maligned eventually - and I supposed Licensed to Ill might like a word here but it's such an apples/oranges comparison I think). The opening 3-song salvo of Bombtrack, Killing in the Name of, and Take the Power Back is just unbelievable. The "mother****er!!!!" in Killing in the Name is one of the most viscerally angry moments in all of music for me. My middle school self loved this album but certainly didn't appreciate the message - that came with time, but Zack's lyrics are what really set Rage apart from their peers. Tom Morello invented sounds that literally never been heard out of a guitar before, and the rhythm section is just pummeling. No skips on this album for me, Wake Up is another high point and Freedom is just an epic closer. It's just so good and arguably they never quite recaptured these heights as a total work, although later albums had their individual high points. A stunning debut on all fronts.

Another amazing album. Rage had a pretty big influence on my late teens and twenties, really opening my mind to a lot of injustices in an era that didn’t have the 24-hour news cycle and constant flood of information that we have now. It’s a real shame we didn’t get another album or two out of them before Zack shut up shop, but we have this masterpiece to remember them by.

what can I say

I still really like this.

I love this album

Heavy, but is nice background music for school work. Definitely old-school mid-2000's skater music- something you'd hear in a game like Tony Hawk games or Skate.

This is the first album I generated that I had already listened to. I liked it the first time and enjoyed it even more now. So much passion and energy. This album is still relevant 33 years later. Bombtrack is a great opener and really gets you pumped up. Favorites: Killing In The Name Of, Take The Power Back, Bullet In The Head, and Know Your Enemy

Very nice, very cool. Had only really heard one of these before but they all go hard.

Man, is there a more politically charged band? Rage Against the Machine stands as one of the most explosive debuts in rock history: a pure collision of fury, groove, and purpose. Zack de la Rocha’s lyrical fire burns over Tom Morello’s inventive guitar work, backed by a rhythm section that’s as heavy as it is precise. Every track hits hard; there isn’t a weak moment here. Kneecap might carry a similar revolutionary spirit today, but RATM remains unmatched - a band that sounded urgent in 1992 and feels even more relevant now.

What machine did you think they were raging against? The dishwasher? Fuck Nazis. Fuck fascists. Fuck ICE. Fuck Donald Trump and anyone who supports that piece of shit. No kings. Ever.

One of my favorite albums. A seminal recording. Songs like Killing in the Name, Bombtrack, Freedom, still strike a chord today in the political environment of 2025. Those songs inspired young people, like me, and help cement values that are more about people over country.

What a debut album! Crazy to think this was the stuff we were listening to at 10-12 years old haha. Rage is STILL the best protest music, the best rage music, and the best way to blow off some steam & get the adrenaline pumping. Shame we had to miss their 2020 show due to COVID... one of my all time cancellations I wish I had. Several generational bangers and instantly put them on the map. What more could you want?

Sure killing in the name is incredible but Bullet in the head is very much on par ‘they say jump you say how high’ might be one of my favourite hooks ever. Wake up reminds me of Kashmir by led zep in the best way possible. Theres a funky angle to the music but unlike something like ‘janes addiction’ which I received the other day theres a lot more honesty and better songcraft from RATM

The sound of the resistance!

Dope! Its a classic!

The great American protest album.

Loved it

Esencial como Killing in the name.

Beautiful album easy five. This is like the second or third album I ever bought with my own money. Somehow they make political rock rap that isn’t cringey at all. Some of the best riffs ever, really important messaging, just a perfect album. Top 100 album ever probably. Know your enemy is one of the best rock songs ever written.

So incredibly, mind blowingly good.

Easy 5. Some albums make you feel like dancing, some albums make you feel like crying, and some albums makes you feel like joining a protest and overthrowing the government.

Bangers, like if kid rock wasn't cringe

This is their first fucking album? Are we sure? This is amazing! The musicianship on this is absolutely next level for whatever level of metal this is in the 90s. Tom Morello is of course celebrated, but he really proves his breadth and expertise here and it's incredible. What can you say about Zach De La Rocha? Unmatchable energy and anger. Maybe the angriest singer ever. I know Killing in the Name of, and it absolutely GRIPS you here, but the rest of the album is just so phenomenal. It is shocking to me how such a politically driven album can also be maybe one of the best albums of the 90s from a pure music standpoint at the same time. AND their first album? An incredible perfect storm.

Que ganas mas tontas de destruir al sistema me han dado Cumple con su proposito claramente.

95/100. Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut is one of my all-time favorite rock albums. The record fuses metal, rap, and funk into an exceptional and explosive sound that feels both innovative and timeless. Its politically charged, forward-thinking lyrics make a powerful statement that resonates just as strongly today. And with tracks like "Killing in the Name," which stands out as one of the best songs of all time, this album isn't just music, it's a rallying cry.

03.10.25 #9 Favourite Tracks: Bombtrack, Killing in the Name Rate: 8/10 Amazing Album

Insanely good, this rocks. I have no idea how I have gone years hearing a couple of the songs on the album but never listened to the whole thing.

BANGER

Bom demais!

Fantastic Album! Anthem of my youth.

5/5 - rocks

Honestly, I really enjoyed this and was ready to recommend to others. I’d actively seek it out for listening during a workout.

The best!

God I know it's cliche but the world needs this album now more than it ever did. Be a cynical asshole about it all you want idc but even 30 years later it still gets the blood pumping and the anger rising more than anything anyone else has put in out since. Fuck Trump and fuck fascism now and forever. KITNO is still my go to song before a race for a reason. 10/10 easily

Great album. I owned it as a kid. I preferred evil empire, but this album is much more raw, emotional, and funky.

They weren’t always so angry. It was actually after meeting Len Houmous that they changed their direction. It was a little misunderstanding. They didn’t like that the crowd was more excited about seeing Houmous & Chutney and blamed Len directly for stealing their crowd. I mean, Len also slept with all their girlfriends so maybe that was the real problem? 4.6 6/10 Know Your Enemy

Love this album. So glad we saw them in person!!

Love this album! Still remember listening to this the for the first time in 7th grade, life changing. Incredible debut album, never tire of it. Highlights: "Know Your Enemy" and "Take the Power Back"

Clssoc

Love this album! Such raw energy!

This is how it looks when talent and passion intertwine perfectly - it's a rare moment when a message is executed so perfectly you have no choice but to listen.

I raged as much as I could on the airplane

this album is highly influential and historical in many ways. Rage as a band and entity itself, is highly influential and historical in many ways. probably a reason i am so against authority and standing up for what i believe in. i also thank Adam for radicalizing me with music like this and showing me that i can listen to whatever i want and not give a shit. this is a top listen for me on any occasion. mainly election season. 5/5.

Who is this guy and why is he yelling?! It’s like hip-HOP, but with a heavy metal soul! Album for the ages, but certainly helping us navigate this day and age. Notable faves: Take the Power Back, Know Your Enemy, Killing in the Name.

I’ve always been a fan of this album, but a few years ago I heard it in an entirely new light, and it blew my mind. The realization was: This is not a rock record. This is purely a hip hop record, made with live instruments instead of samples and machines, and that’s how it should be listened to. From that moment on my opinion of this record and band went from just love to absolute respect. It might have influenced a lot of other terrible artists to ape their success and start the Rap Rock/ Nü Metal genre, but no one has or will ever do it better. The fact that the subject matter is just as poignant today as it was 30 years ago goes to show how important this band and album are. The only song I don’t dig on here is “Settle For Nothing”, but that will not get in the way of a very well deserved 5 stars. Literally one of the best hip hop albums of all time.

One of my favorites

Amazing. Suppose it's kind of ironic straight after giving Straight Outta Compton a 1, but what makes this(and most music) album for me is the playing. Every single track on this album just hits hard back to back, there's not a single slump. I am in awe of Morello's guitar playing, it's everything from unbelievably creative and weird to riffs that I could listen to all day. The rage and anger works so well and is really unbeatable for a protest album.

I'm a bass head so this is a Hall of Famer for me. I've sat and played through the entire album on the drums because it's not only sick as hell but also fun as hell to play. This album goes. I don't need to give reasons why this album is great as it's already got a legacy that I think it lives up to. Highlight: Bullet In The Head

Go on, have your 5 stars kings.

What an album! Morello bringing this sound in 92 must have left some amount of jaws on the ground and Zack's manifesto/battle cry wants me to stockpile some petrol bombs

Almost flawless album, contender for best debut of all-time. Have this on heavy rotation for the last 20 years, spent way too much time trying to learn all the guitar parts, with an unhealthy obsession around 2008. Never fully warmed to Settle For Nothing but it's still better than most.

There's something special about this album. The anger on display perfectly mirrors the band and album name.

Another album I've loved for a long time. Every track is a banger. Bombtrack is a great opener, and Freedom is a solid closer. I also think Township Rebellion is a sleeper great track.

Good debut album

I’m not going to justify this one. I just really like the album

Goddamn I love this album. It’s the perfect introduction to protest music,(it was mine) The opening trio of songs is so strong. This album is designed to get you angry and pumped up and it doesn’t let you down. I’ve seen A lot of people argue about the lyrics being amateurish, but the “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” is exactly what protest music should be, catchy as fuck and easily chantable. I’m sure Rage could’ve wrote deeper political songs but that’s not what they were about. Ton Morello is such an innovator. We could use more rage in today’s times. 9.5/10

Great. Changed my life.

I was 19 and lived in LA in 1992. I was there during the Rodney King riots. This album came out several months later and really captures the anger and frustration that was really taking hold in the country in those days. It seems like child's play compared to 2025 I'm afraid. But I digress. This album is truly powerful whether you agree with the message or not. Before dopey nu metal took over in the mid to late 90s, RATM really captured something that was primal, heavy, angry, yet catchy. And that unforgettable album cover. My only minor complaint is that the many of the songs have a similar progression and pattern to them. But I'm some ways it works to their advantage here. 4.5/5 #183

Always loved bombtrack, think I’ve heard this through but everything past wake up is a blur. Killing in the name of is good, but I think take the power back is a better song. Settle for nothing was fine. Never heard it. Bullet in the head onto wake up is great. Fistful of steel was violent I was shocked. Very good, perfect delivery. Township rebellion is good. Freedom is an interesting closing. Style of percussion changed in the last two songs Overall awesome.

This album is like someone reading Marxist theory to you through a megaphone while drop-kicking your door in—then handing you a guitar and telling you to fight back. It’s raw, volatile, and somehow surgically tight. Every riff is a molotov cocktail, and Zack de la Rocha doesn’t rap at you—he surgically removes your spine with syllables. Tom Morello? Not a guitarist—just a sentient distortion pedal possessed by ghosts of revolutionaries. Rating: 5/5 Short Review: It’s protest music that works better than therapy. If you don’t feel something, you’re probably a spreadsheet in human form. Favorite Track: “Know Your Enemy” – This is the part where your blood becomes 80% adrenaline and 20% black coffee.

Even better than I remembered, and I remembered this as being a classic album. Sadly, the only thing that's gotten old about this album is that it's still as relevant today as it was when it came out over 30 years ago. We still have forces burning crosses in America, it might even be worse over there now than it was in 1992. Easy five stars.

Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me

Might be my favorite all time. Heady headbangers. Intelligent chaos. I love it. 10

What should we say about this masterpiece? Starting with a Bomb(track), and going smoothly into the anthem of a generation. Every song is plastered with the riffs and experimental sounds from Tom Morello, which guitar playing style was ahead of his time. Excellent album. Nothing more too say.

Raw power.

Absolute classic love it so much

I've loved this album for 30 years. Still do. It's tempting to pick nits about the ham-fisted lyrics, the hypocrisy of rich rockstars raging against the machine, and whatever, but this absolutely rips. There are weaker spots but that means they're simply good, not great ("Settle for Nothing" "Fistful of Steel"). There's also a few things that aged poorly, but they were huge for a reason. Rap-rock generally sucks, but not always. RATM forever.

Hadn't previously listened to this album in its entirety. So good!

Banger. Fun hearing Zach go super Saiyan throughout. 5 stars

Just relistened this album yesterday, it’s absolutely fantastic. Great lyrics, great instrumentals and I love. The rapping over rock music

This album feels timeless, one of the greatest debuts of the decade with wall to wall bangers and an innovative and powerful sound that sadly was imitated and appropriated to the garbage genre of nu metal. Yet the OG still slaps so very much

Amazing. I knew many of the songs, but several more bangers stood out when I listened to the whole album. Epic.

Sounds unique even now.

Incredible album - one of my favorites. After listening to this I can do anything.

I remember the first time I listened to this album, many years ago, in my dad's car. First song in and I thought, "woah, this is great", second song canme in: "amazing". Third song "another great song"... We reached the end of the album and I really enjoyed every song of it. It was probably the first time that that had happened to me. After that I "borrowed" the CD from my dad and listened to it many times in my room. Actually, I never returned the album to my dad haha The energy, the RAGE, Morello's riffs, Zack De La Rocha name and singing, the whole "no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record", made this album the coolest album ever to me at the time. And I guess that many years later, I still feel the same way.

This is an explosive debut album with a (then) novel mix of hard rock/punk and rap. I saw them live at Lollapalooza and was immediately a fan

Great, 4.5

Not exactly my kind of music but every song is perfect. These guys rock and got a good beat as they give the middle finger to the establishment.

Revolution had many voices, but none as powerful as this one. RATM's music hits with the force of a thunder bolt on every level, rom the distorted riffs to the angry, tortured vocals. The production is on point, bringing out the hum of the amps and the rattle of the bass strings giving the listener the feeling of sitting in with the band in their rehearsal space. The constant repetition of the lyrics was risky, but Zach de la Rocha's driving vocal style keeps it emotionally real.

One of the greatest protest albums of all time. Funky as hell too. Makes me remember hanging out with Steve and Justin.

FYIWDWYTM

Listened to this album for the first time a couple months ago in light of US current events. Listening this time around I can't believe I didn't know the context of the album cover and it makes perfect sense. Love de la Rocha's growling scream. absolutely love.

Banger

Classic

One of those albums that set off a trend for guitars — for better or for much worse. Anyway, Tom Morello is a real one.

Don't have to listen to know it's banging. But I won't listen this first thing in the morning. I need some time to wake up first. Later in the evening or when to get hyped up this is the way to go. 5/5

Classic

The riffs, the grooves, the flow. An album that is difficult to sit still to. When I was a young teen I was listening to hip hop quite a bit and then my Dad gave me this album. Changed a lot of things. I had forgotten how many killer riffs are on this album.

Awesome! Big riffs, great bass!

I FEEL SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW

Original!!

[[music]], [[rock music]], [[rap rock]] #music #rock Rage Against The Machine (1992) album RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE!!!! So there will be bias here because I LOVE Rage Against the Machine and this track is just overall POWERFUL and I love it. The ALBUM COVER is just BEAUTY. Perfect show of the state of rebellion while trying to be peaceful despite being on fire. Great message of rebellion against society while trying to be peaceful even while burning Bombtrack - Listen to this often just to get pumped or if I want to be angry. Knowing it's the first song of the album is GREAT. Very anticapitalism as the whole album pretty much will be Killing In The Name Of - One of my favorite songs of theirs. One of the most popular songs they have. Loved by Guitar Hero. Overall fantastic message of KKK, American society, and being a drone to society. Take the Power Back - Heard this a few times, don't really recall and I think it's cause I don't like how the guitar sounds at the beginning so I usually switch but the bass riff is sick with it. Almost ominous. But then it goes into power on taking power back from the white focused government Settle for Nothing - Slow song, didn't really hook me and message wasn't really listened too. I just don't like slow rock at times? Bullet In The Head - Popular song for sure that I do enjoy a lot. Love it lyrically and the sounds. Such catchy lyrics kind of talking about listening to the system still causing you to die even if you cooperate with police Know Your Enemy - Talking about knowing who the enemy is in the government system. INTENSE song and pumps you up to fight and resist. Wake Up - I've heard this song more often then the other ones that I'm not as familiar with in this track (settle for nothing and take the power back). This song tries to give information on american history, black people being targeted, and to waking up to the hypocrisy of the United States. Fistful of Steel - Song is talking about a gun in hand probably or metaphorically the microphone is a fistful of steel being able to preach truth and justice Township of Rebellion - Love the pump up and energy of this one. A big preach on how to speak out against the wrongs of the world, using their platform to inspire for rebellion, fighting against the government with the townpeople of USA. Freedom - Talking about the use of freedom but doing what they want. Spray painting, speaking out loud, metaphors of games in the world. How freedom is fake and how that we gotta fight for real freedom. Overall, I love this band and album. Easy 5/5 because I already knew more then half of the songs.

This is the first physical album I ever bought with that cute little "Parental Advisory" sticker on it, and I could have done a hell of a lot worse. I'm not gonna say that the world needs this album right now, because the implication that world peace could be achieved by sitting everyone down with a Rage album is frankly stupid, but maybe *I* need this right now. In the present day, it is a deeply stupid time to be an American, and hearing just how much Rage Against The Machine seems to "get it" is on some level cathartic, but on another worrying, because if so many of the same issues and ideas confronted here feel prescient and fresh, then just maybe it has *always* been a stupid time to be an American. Now, this is a conclusion I came to a while ago, but this is certainly a cultural artifact which constitutes material evidence supporting that hypothesis. Rage Against The Machine may be the most successful band to ever explicitly combine Metal and Hip-Hop. And I think there is an argument that this may be the greatest album within its niche. Zack De La Rocha's powerful vocals, Tom Morello's distinct and iconic guitar work and Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk's groovy rhythm section makes for a formidable band. This album is an outburst of righteous, intelligent anger that captured the public through its intensity and fantastic songs, not to mention the incredibly powerful album art. This tracklist is just stacked. Bombtrack is very representative of the band's sound and it rockets out of the gate. Killing In The Name is an all-timer, one of the most iconic songs of the '90s, maybe ever. "Fuck You, I Won't Do What You Tell Me" is a mantra for a certain generation of music listeners, it is incredibly powerful. Take The Power Back gets groovy with it, bringing out the bass work. Settle For Nothing is incredibly dynamic, with its incredibly heavy riffs. And Rage Against The Machine just never runs out of steam. Bullet In The Head is the closest we have to a low point, but I honestly think it's a matter of personal preference. But even so, we get into Know Your Enemy, which just moves with so much energy. I'd like to take a moment to mention just how detailed all these compositions are, like there really isn't a lazy song here, there's always a great riff, or bridge, or solo around the corner. I only have so much to say about the last 4 songs here, like they are also sick as hell. Although I would like to make a mention of Township Rebellion, a super underrated song. I mean, if you're interested in metal *or* hip hop *or* you're just angry, throw this on, it's damn near perfect.

All the bad reviews of this record on this site are posted by narc bootlickers

One of my top 20 albums for sure, maybe higher (you know how those things go). I can't count the amount of times I went out skating with this on the discman.

Classic angst

Fucking banger after banger

A classic album, but always a reminder of how much I dislike Tom Morello’s lead guitar playing.

Another one I loved while on my early teens <3 back when I thought they were anti-establishment :) -- I can't help but love the unadulterated anger of this album! Now is yet another one of those bands where I have to separate the art from the artist. Even though I despise the guy, I can't deny how powerful and wonderfully rhythmic Tom Morello's guitar playing is, specially when combined with Tim and Brad. I'm also glad I got to listen to this album again, cause I didn't know there was a Maynard collab!! never noticed it before.

Fantastic. One of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard.

One of the greatest of all time

One of the best debut albums ever. And one of the best hard rock albums ever. No criticism.

Another one of my favorite albums from my college days. I freaking love RATM.

I don't like "rap-rock" but this is enjoyable unlike the stuff that was coming out teen years later. Fun listen.

Relistening to this album and I'm astounded that people thought they WEREN'T "Woke" They're the first instance of an ACAB mentality that I think I was ever exposed to. And the truths in the lyrics really haven't been overcome yet. More than a little sad America.

Doesn’t age. Fierce, angry, amazing

One of the goats. The production is seriously so clean and raw and great sounding. The songwriting and band are so immersive and the album is a classic

Fuck yeah

Album maravilhoso! Letras e músicas matadoras! TRN VX PRO+.

I had heard Rage Against The Machine before, but I hadn’t heard the term rap metal until this album. This is what punk lyrics should sound like. None of that whiny, lonely boy or purely teen angst that’s been described before. This is politically charged and has a vibe like a good rap album, but all of the musicality of rock. The guitar riffs feel unique and innovative. Dare I say you can feel the “rage against the machine” in this one

I’ve listened to so many of these songs, but never as a complete package. Wow. It made me laugh that “freedom” rang a little bit like “evenflow,” but that didn’t stop the party.

Dad- 7 Mom- 4 Mike- 10 Lori- 10 Michael- 10 Miles- 10 Cole- 10 Avg- 8.71

A truly standout and legendary album.

Settle for nothing is suprisingly good.

It's Fucking Rage!

Rage Against The Machine: Rage Against The Machine: This is one of those albums. Super influential and well regarded. It is VERY easy to see why. It is flawless. It has some of the most dynamic and crisp production ever. The guitar work is insane, tom morello is a beast and this is full of great examples of it. The percussion is diverse and pounding, and the rapping fits with the music very well. This is just a truly exceptional album. 10/10

Trop trop bien

Essential listening.

i love the energy, the anger, the social consciousness. impossible to not play loud

This album hits hard. From the opening riff of “Bombtrack,” you know you're in for something wild. Rage brought rap and rock together like no one else — raw, loud, and full of purpose. Zack’s vocals are powerful and real. You feel every word. Tom Morello? Guy’s a guitar wizard. Makes sounds you didn’t even think were possible. The bass and drums groove hard and keep it all locked in tight. The lyrics don’t hold back. They stand for something. It’s angry, smart, and straight-up bold. Rage wasn’t just making music — they were shaking things up. Still gives me chills. I’ll keep spinning this one for years. Total classic.

Urghhh ahhh this is just primal Zack de la Rocha. Album of my late teen years. I can’t contest it. Still listen to it now. The sentence structure of Zack is iconic. Who needs standard iambics pentameters when you can create your own intonation. They use a similar riff and style through out the album. I would say there is a heavy emphasis on repetition, but the best way to hammer home your political message is repetition. ( as we aptly learnt from Tony Blair c.1997 - maybe he took inspiration from RATM) Bullet in the head is a favourite on the album. KITN obvs Township Rebellion, just powerful. Love this album. Introduced RATM to the world.

“it’s just another bombtrack…” Iconic and hype opening for one of the most important debut albums ever recorded. This served as a huge inspiration and paved the way for many bands. Tom Morello reinvented how the guitar is approached as an instrument. Bullet in the head is genius however I will say the ultimate version of that track is the BBC2 live recording, but the album version still cracks skulls. The bass tone and drums on this are a cohesive face punch 🥊

Listened to this album recently as part of my 2025 resolution to listen to at least one new album per week. Wrote the following note for it on my spreadsheet: "Political messaging at its finest." Previously listened to 7 songs (Bombtrack; Killing in the Name; Take the Power Back; Bullet in the Head; Know Your Enemy; Wake Up; Freedom) Favorite Song: Take the Power Back

Iconic. A beautifully produced masterpiece.

durisimo, se nota el oído

Its crazy how relevant this album was and had remained since it released. The political commentary of police being corrupt, the government being corrupt over the heavy instrumentation really sells the point of this album. It's one of my favourites of all time. 10/10 Favourite: Settle for Nothing Least Favourite: None

honestly? fuck yeah

fuck you, i won't do what you tell me!! this goes hard 30 years later and is unfortunately more relevant now than ever. incredible debut album, powerful lyrics, instruments all hit hard, just excellent stuff through and through. favorites: bombtrack, killing in the name, take the power back, know your enemy

Freaking amazing

I’m not sure any other album has so perfectly captured the anger and frustration of being a middle class male just coming into adulthood in a world dominated by politicians and phonies. It’s Catcher in the Rye with outstanding drums and guitar. I have little doubt that suburban teens will be playing this album thirty years from now just as there were thirty years ago.

--Bombtrack...righteous anger --Killing in the Name...all-timer. Makes me want to run through a wall --Take the Power Back...this rhythm section kicks all of the ass --Settle for Nothing...we change tempo. Not for the better --Bullet in the Head...starts out more funky than other tracks then goes hard. The bass work/sound is perfection --Know Your Enemy...yes. Yes. YES! --Wake Up...this group is in full command --Fistful of Steel...a lesser track but still good --Township Rebellion...If you read my past reviews, you may notice that I like my songs on the shorter side. Most of the tracks on this album are 5-6 minutes. It's not a problem for me here because these guys keep things interesting and demand your attention --Freedom...kind of a Greatest Hits of earlier tracks. Not the best but seems appropriate for a closer

Chef’s kiss

just want someone to tell me what to do at this point

Best riffs on this are the ones you don’t hear in guitar center

One of my favourite albums. The themes still feel depressing relevant today.

Legendary. Fave song: Killing In The Name Honorable Mentions: Bullet In The Head, Know Your Enemy

I've been listening to this album on and off since junior high. Rage has never been my favorite band, but I've gone through cycles of listening to lots of them and I still enjoy their first two albums quite a bit. This is an album that I'm never mad about hearing. 4.5/5

This is another album that shouldn't be relevant in 2025, yet here we are. This album was and is a wake up call. Sadly it wasn't heeded when it came out and I doubt it will be now. It's still a absolute great album. It holds up today as well as when it came out. Rage has a statement to make with each and every song and they are loud when they make it. "Some of those that work forces Are the same that burn crosses"

This is a massive album! good lord this slaps you in the face and the stomach.

"America, the land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy!" Raging against the machine complaining about things in the 90s that are still outraging in 2025.

perfect album for the 4th of July. I remember hearing this for the first time and it blew me away, because it was like nothing is ever heard. It was new and creative and it flat out rocked. I feel the same way about it to this day.

One of the best debut albums I have listened to. A new genre, fully formed out of the gates and absolutely ripping!

If you want emotion and energy, this is it. So perfect even now with Trump 2.0 tearing this country apart.

Obviously familiar with RATM but I’d never listened to one of their albums before. I now understand why the late 90s and early 00s were full of shitty rap/metal hybrids, it’s because these guys made it sound so fucking cool. Turns out it’s really hard to do without sounding corny or derivative. All 4 parts of the band sound great but in my opinion Morello’s guitar - I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone play guitar where it sounds like it belongs in a rap song before - really stands out. I think this a rare 5 for me on the first listen. They even pull off all the political stuff without sounding forced or insincere.

Amazing hard rock and punk-rap album which is sufficiently gnarly and revolutionary yet never exhausting

Its a fiiiiiiive

It's a five because fuck you I won't do what you tell me

The music is powerful and the message remains sharp and impactful. Rage Against the Machine still hits just as hard, even 30 years later.
