Reviews (page 5 of 13)

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Chill and comforting.

Another decent Neil Young album, we can skip it from the 1001 though. 3.7/5

heißes Wetter Musik - es sind 35°C

Great album. Neil Young is one of the best lyricist. Enjoyable summer vibes

I'm not a member of the Neil Young Haters Club.

Not Neil Youngs' best album by any means but still á solid albun

Another solid record by Neil.

I thought I didn’t like Neil Young, turns out I just don’t like Harvest era Neil Young

Very good for alone slow sunset drives with no traffic

I love Neil Young because he makes me feel like I could have been professional musician too; if Neil can get paid to sing, maybe anyone can. This album is full of the kind of misanthropic folk/blues/rock that I would have eaten up during my frequently mentioned Classic Rock Phase(TM). Unfortunately, I never made it past Buffalo Springfield or the popular notion that Neil’s solo catalog was as hit-or-miss as it was diverse. Case in point - a song from his newest album, Talkin to the Trees, was recently suggested as the worst song of the 2025. Ouch. Fortunately, this album feels like it falls on the opposite end of the spectrum. First listen standouts for me include “Revolution Blues” and “On The Beach”. The former feels ripe for a good cover, and the latter has a groove I could swim in for much longer than it’s 7min runtime (which feels absolutely wild to say about a song that long). I’ll also give an honorable mention to “Walk On”, but it has an aggressively Niel Young vocal performance that could turn away casual listeners right away. But here again, the track feels ripe for a good cover. I was excited that this could be my first no skip album of the project, but “Ambulance Blues” blew the no hitter in the ninth inning. And if we’re skipping one, then I might consider skipping “See The Sky About To Rain” as well, if only because it’s keeping me from all the tracks I like in the heart of the album. Maybe we axe Ambulance Blues and move this one towards the end for a more bulletproof album? Overall, this was a fun discovery, and a nice way to start my Sunday morning. I can see myself revisiting this album, and I look forward to more Neil Young in this project (at least Harvest, I assume).

Great album, love Neil young not my favourite of his but still excellent

7/10 I’ve never really listened to much Neil Young outside of the radio hits, but I liked this. I do listen to a bit of early blues here and there and there are obviously big echoes of some of that music in here. The title track is a bit of a standout for me, but there are some other really good tunes in there too. In retrospect, Walk On is a bit of an odd album opener as the rest of the album is definitely more melancholic and bluesy, even on the more upbeat cuts, but perhaps that just goes to emphasise the emotion throughout the rest of the album. I’m pretty sure I’ll be back to this one as I enjoyed my second run through more than my first. Walk On - What a great little opener. I really like the transition between the pre-chorus and the chorus. It’s got a really nice swagger. See the Sky About to Rain - Big echoes of Heart of Gold in the vocal for this one for me. Nice song though. I’m a sucker for an electric piano and the Wurlitzer on this is lovely. Revolution Blues - A nice change of pace, this is a really great track. It’s got a good groove but is also somehow a little sinister. For the Turnstiles - I like this too. It’s got an old-school blues sound. Simple, but effective. Lacking in anything bassy which makes it sound a bit thin. Vampire Blues - Another decent bluesy number. Really like the chorus on this one. On the Beach - Immediately sounds more melancholic. This is one for when you’re wallowing in your own self pity. I love the dark, smoky atmosphere this evokes. There’s a little bit of hope and optimism that seeps through here and there. Dark times with a hint of dawn in the distance. Motion Picture (For Carrie) - This one was ok. A bit more pedestrian without the depth to some of the other tracks. Liked the harmonica solo. Ambulance Blues - I liked some aspects of this, others less. Liked the violin, but I’m not keen on this type of harmonica playing. That sort of rhythmical blowing on chords without picking out a note just sounds a bit lazy to me. This was too long as well. Thought int was finishing and there were three minutes left.

good shit, i like this one more than the last i think he’s got such a cool voice and is a great guitar player, calm but light and enjoyable for sure yet again reminds me of my dad!

Neil Young continues to confound me. I've been left pretty cold by most of his solo albums that I've heard in this challenge, yet I love his work with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. I had very high hopes for "Harvest" and was let down, but I was blown away by "After the Gold Rush." I didn't quite know what to expect from Young's beach album, but I assumed it would be a fairly lighthearted and forgettable affair. Once again, he defies my expectations. If this is someone on a beach vacation, he's going to bring down the mood of the entire group pretty quickly. But I actually really love the bleakness of this album. Apparently part of his "ditch" trilogy where he was rebelling against his own fame and clearly in a bad place. There's nothing in particularly groundbreaking about it, it's just pure raw energy and good playing. So confusingly, I find myself liking Neil Young once again. This leads me to to the uncomfortable question of whether I only like Neil Young when he's depressed. I hate to be the kind of fan that wants the artists to keep suffering for their art, but Young really does seem to make his best works when he's down.

I don't think this is the best of Neil Young's albums, but it's no doubt to me that, even here, he captures something that folk artists have been trying (and often failing) to recreate to this day. Definitely returning to this.

A blistering and yet haunting look into Neil Young's psyche at the time of recording. Filled with bitterness, loathing, and misery, this album is a cathartic release of everything Neil had pent up over the years, via tender folk-rock ballads, searing electric blues, and plenty of guitar and organ workouts. A must-listen for sure!

It took me a long time to get into Neil Young but I'm glad I did. I think he's at his best when he's raging at society, but I prefer his music when he's lost and disaffected rather than angry.

This was a complete gem. Neil Young is up and down with his albums, but this one was a treat.

First half is amazing 4.5

Good album. I was surprised, since I don’t really like folk, but this took rock and it felt like it may have reinforced folk as more of a rock genre. I like it, and I highly recommend.

Super fine Neil Young album.

Funny album

One of his best. Excellent muddy blues proto-stoner rock.

Okay this does feel like I’m on a beach! Very good but still feels easy, low stress. Great album for a travel day. Really matches the album cover art too. So far really liking it. Seems like something I’d listen to in one sitting and enjoy but nothing was a super standout

Embarrassing that I've never listened to this, I really like it. Highlights: On the Beach, Ambulance Blues

Chill easy listen. Sometimes melancholic sounding but more pragmatic? Favourites: vampire blues, on the beach, motion pictures (for Carrie)

I had to listen to this twice because the first time it didn’t hit how I thought it should, and I am so glad I did. I loved the stripped back sound in this album. At first I thought this album was quite sad but on second listen is absolutely is not! Fav songs: For the turnstiles, Motion Pictures (for Carrie),Ambulance Blues

Light four Love the algorithm for this thing! Don’t get but one Neil Young album for the first 500 days of this thing, but now I get two in one week! It’s harder to really appreciate them when I get them so close together like that, but I still listened to this twice through and tried to appreciate it on its own. Tbh, it’s more of the stuff I liked last time! It’s not too different! It feels super influential to music and bands I like nowadays, so I’m gonna rate it p highly.

Love. Awesome sound. Blues country folk. Nice guitar solos. NT Katherine

My ears and mind are totally tuned into Neil Young. I love this record! It’s crazy to think that many people hadn’t heard this until 2003 when it was re-released.

This hit

Neil Young is always good.

Loved it! Liked Neil before but have never done a deep dive, so this was a great album to start with

I’m not sure I’ve listened to an entire Neil Young album before. I enjoyed it more than expected. See the sky about to rain was my favorite.

An album called "On the Beach" with no tracks akin to "Who Let The Dogs Out?", "The Thong Song", or "Kokomo." An album called "On the Beach" where 38% of the song titles have the word "Blues" in them.....and are really not that bluesy. An album called "On the Beach" by a folk rock legend from Canada... Is still a great album. No weak points at all, nothing really stood out, but I'd still spin this again and again. Starting to think all Neil Young albums are 4+ stars.

Powerful writing, singing, and production. All hallmarks of an excellent folk/singer-songwriter album. It's as if every second of this record was recorded with intention. There isn't really a wasted moment. This makes me extremely excited to listen to more Neil Young. Standout tracks include "See the Sky About to Rain", "Revolution Blues", the title track, and "Ambulance Blues".

Pretty enjoyable and relaxing soundtrack for my Friday morning. I’ll be honest that I’ve never really listened to Neil Young much at all. If more are like this, I'll be happy

Not my favorite Neil album, but as always he wears his heart on his sleeve and it comes through loud and clear in his music. In this period he was feeling listless, disillusioned, and burned out.

bom demais, classiqueira

amei country album muito legal do neil young 2 musicas gostei bastante,

This was a great listen, loved the mix of folk and blues, it feels like nostalgic or melancholic, Young's voice delivers that emotion even stronger. I really liked it, it felt really cohesive (although his lyrics are a bit amnbiguous at times). I felt the second half worked particularly well, it encapsulates the vibe really well, with songs that are a bit more fleshed out. The last 3 songs back to back are great, beautiful and moving. It's very difficult to pick a faovurite out of the 3.

Love reading the reviews for a Neil Young album because most of them are either 1/5: worst thing I've ever heard. he probably smells bad. somebody warn me next time so I can prepare my ear holes for tepid caterwauling 5/5: neil is a visionary and he has bewitched me body and soul. I want him This is a middle of the road Neil Young album for me, which is still a damn good album. His voice isn't THAT bad, but as a longtime Springsteen fan, maybe I'm just desensitized...

Lenge siden jeg har hørt. God plate.

One of his best. 4.5/5

Repeat nummer twee.

This was such a lovely vibe . I had a cheeky evening listen and I really really enjoyed it . The guitar was very fun and groovy . I really loved the country vibe to it . Such an easy listen . Every song was different but still fit into the album very well . Favourite song was motion pictures by far it was bloody lovely . Glad I had an album which didn’t make me feel like I wanted to rip my ears off ( like yesterday ) . Loved it . Very very solid album . Also never heard of Neil young . So it’s a win win .

Reminds of old west America, I like the harmonica, nice, slow and nostalgic, 3.5/5

Neil Young at his darkest, lowest and most strung out point? The band, wrecked beyond belief, staggers between fury and despair with a bass and drums-forward mix - the guitars, keys and vocals scratch and scream in and out. Until the beautiful acoustics come in. I've used the word "and" far too often, but it is necessary for this dichotomous album which lives in the spaces created by division - personally, politically, socially, emotionally, musically... Amazing lyrics. "The world is turning, I hope it don't turn away" Favourite tracks: See The Sky About To Rain, Revolution Blues, For The Turnstiles, On The Beach, Ambulance Blues

I loved the vibes here. Thank you very much, Neil Young

Neil, Neil, Neil. I like this one. A little dirty, a little grungy, a little greasy, nice and slow. I'm thinking mostly about the title track. The whole thing sounds a bit like he's fronting The Band or a really early version of The Eagles, maybe? Does this one fly under the Neil radar? I never hear anyone talk about it, I might not have ever even heard of it until this list generator pushed it to me. Pretty much an insta-add to my library.

It’s Neil Young, in his prime, what’s not to love? Great album, with not too many flaws. This always seems to be the Neil Young album that people say is their favourite because it sounds cooler than liking Harvest…well, I love Harvest and it’s my favourite, but this runs it pretty close.

Dad- 8 Mom- 5 Mike- 8 Lori- 9 Michael- 9.5 Miles- 5 Cole- 6 Avg- 7.21

This was a cool album. Also kind of like they pulled random words out of a hat and had to write a song about that random word in 10 minutes or less.

No commercial hits on this album, but still a nice mellow sound.

Seems I quite like Neil Young...

Min husgud, känns lite överskattat.,. Blir seg efter hand

I like Neil Young - not an artist I had any background in until the last decade this is my first listen to this album and I think I'll go back to this. None of the well known hits but plenty to enjoy.

Good easy listening album

Haunting beauty in the lyricism and ballads but man those upbeat songs miss hard

Listened Before? N He has such an awesome voice. Old or young, he sounds the same. This is NY in his prime and it aged perfectly. Not as protest-y as some of his earlier stuff is my only gripe but I still really liked it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Revolution Blues

Walk On is one of my favourite Neil Young songs.

I've never really liked Neil Young's music and my tolerance for CSNY-type folk/country rock is pretty low, but this album was nice to listen to. Very laid back with some blues which gives it a different vibe. I liked this one. Maybe I'll give Harvest another try.

Be so zwösche drü ond vier stärne. Hed einigi gueti wie Walk on aber nüd wo mega usestecht. Es werd aber drom klassisch ufgrondet.

Feels like summer (duh). Beautiful vibe at the right time.

Walk On is boppy. For the Turnstiles is surprisingly bluesy. Also sounds a lot like The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. All of the songs are surprisingly bluesy. Makes sense given that a bunch of them are NOUN Blues. I guess I thought that Neil Young was supposed to be more folksy.

See the Sky About to Rain is great

Already like the sound as soon as first song started decent album for background music Neil young always a win

I don't have memories that are specific to Neil Young. I only knew one of the songs on the album, but I think that Young's voice has become so ubiquitous in my musical world that it is almost always comforting to hear.

Only listened to 4-5 songs, but great stuff.

Very chill. I listened on a beach

From Upbeat to slow melodies, this album has a good range of moods. Feels like a sunny day at the beach sadden as a sun shower whips through Stand outs; Walk On. See the sky about the rain, Revolution blues, vampire blues. On the beach

I nearly made the mistake of writing this album off during track 1, because it sounded upbeat and less haunting than my favourite Neil Young tracks (I don't know many). But its quality became apparent. I've come to Neil Young later in life, and I'm enjoying the process of discovery. Even where the energy might seem to dip, if you engage your brain the beautiful guitar-work and intensity remain. His songs are deceptively simple; there is much to hear and feel.

beavis stop eating all the cigarettes

that was actually pretty good. neil young i apologize

Nice to get to know NY better. Groovy personal narrative

Before: I don't know as much Neil Young as I should but this album art has me excited lol it's so cool. Harvest Moon is a classic banger but I don't know anything from this record. Standout tracks: See The Sky About To Rain Motion Pictures (For Carrie) Weakest tracks: For The Turnstiles Standout lyrics: "Some get stoned, some get strange, but sooner or later it all gets real" - Walk On "Well I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars, but I hate them worse than lepers and I'll kill them in their cars" - Revolution Blues "Though my problems are meaningless, that doesn't make them go away" - On The Beach "You're all just pissin' in the wind. You don't know it, but you are, and there ain't nothing like a friend who can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind." - Ambulance Blues During/after: The opening track is good! It has a very beachy, but almost melancholic feel in a way that reminded me of Van Morrison. Pretty much exactly was I was expecting from what I know about Neil Young and from the album art. See The Sky About To Rain was another great track, and it really hones in on that almost melancholic feel that Walk On teased. Brownie points for the harmonica too, obviously. Revolution Blues is a lyrically abrasive protest song that really hit me. No more "give peace a chance" because my buddy Neil and I are going to kill the famous stars in their cars in Laurel Canyon. Loveee. Unfortunately, I'm not super into For The Turnstiles. The vocals on it just didn't do it for me and it felt weaker than the previous tracks. Vampire Blues was definitely better but was not nearly as strong as the first few tracks, but I enjoy the lyrics and continued social commentary that this song provides. I feel similarly about On The Beach. Beautiful lyrics with themes about getting out of town and feeling like dreams are just out of reach, but sonically it was kind of just fine for me. I was surprised that this was the title track. It made me wonder if there was something about it that I was missing. Motion Pictures (For Carrie) was a beautiful love song and an improvement from the last few songs. Loved the slow, beachy guitar and the harmonica here, but the production and mixing left a bit to be desired. Ambulance Blues was an amazing ending to this record. It hones in on those existential feelings that the rest of the record explores but maintains the rich vocals and instrumentals (more harmonica <3) that I liked so much from the first few songs. The second half of this record left me just a bit disappointed. I was loving the beginning and had super high hopes, but most of the the second half just didn't quite hit the same to my ear, though it wasn't bad by any means. There was strong lyricism throughout and I really enjoyed the themes and the melancholic beachiness. There's something I love so much about the juxtaposition of paradise and the romanticized beach life It was very Mamas and the Papas or Van Morrison sounding to me. If I could give this a 3.5 I would, but this felt worth rounding up. 4/5.

I've gotten a ton of Neil Young lately. This may be my favorite album of his so far

Never listened to this album before. Was calm and serene. Quite a good album.

Quite good. I made the mistake of listening to this when I was late for work and thought I'd hated it. On second listen (casually doing some bike cleaning on my own time) I love it

Neil Young is a case study in sounding great by sounding a kinda bad. He may not have a beautiful voice but that doesn’t stop him from being a great singer.

new to me, but very good

Kinda of folk/country/blues. Can definitely hear the influence this had on more modern indie music, but can’t put a finger on exactly who. First two tracks are fun, then it’s quite sad, but overall a good listen. Only 8 songs so pretty quick

Summer rock. Dad would love this

This album was exactly what I needed. So good.

I enjoyed the album. Is this the Neil Young from "Sweet Home Alabama"?

Day450 - a top five neil young album for me

This is the 7th Neil Young album that this list has fed me, which includes 1 from Buffalo Springfield, 1 from Young & Crazy Horse, and 1 from Crosby Stills Nash & Young. This is the first Neil Young solo album that I could tolerate. It's actually good. I don't know what's different about it, but I can rock this one.

Fantastic album for what it is. This type of music might not be my cup of tea necessarily, but as music goes it was enjoyable for it to run in the background while I did some administrative tasks. 4/5

Schönes Album!

Neil rarely disappoints for me.

I was not familiar with this record. I like the introspective yet laid-back vibes. It makes for a great background album, something that you are not obligated to really dig into, but the option is there.

Very enjoyable indeed. Never really listened to much Neil Young, but I'm not sure why because I'm a big fan of this.

All over the place yet brilliance.

Obviously still extremely solid songwriting, but On The Beach doesn't get to me like the three albums preceding it in Young's discography.

If I was still coming to terms with the massive weight of Harvest, I too would need to take it down a notch and hit the beach.

Quiet rock pearl. Neil Young in his early solo career.

Great calm music. Loved the album

4 out of 5. Solid album.

Fav: On The Beach Least Fav: For The Turnstiles Death Stranding 2

It’s a vibe

Walk On 3.7 See the Sky About to Rain 3.6 Revolution Blues 3.9 For the Turnstiles 3.3 Vampire Blues 3.8 On the Beach 3.4 Motion Pictures 3.2 Ambulance Blues 3.3 Score: 3.525

Enjoyable.

This album was very good. It had kind of a more modern Neil Young sound. I’m more familiar with his older songs, but this was great.

Some nice songs

As its namesake suggests , sounds like something you'd listen to on the beach during a relaxing vacation with friends. Pretty chill, nice use of precussions. Nice melodies and lyrics are simple yet descriptive. So a good listen overall. Rating: 3.8/5

é melhor do que eu me lembrava, na verdade. não chega perto dos meus favoritos do Neil Young, mas me surpreende eu ter ouvido tão pouco esse disco

Ooo, I really like this. It feels summery and really carefree. The electric guitar and the singing feels hopeful and stress-free. It kinda feels like getting a summer job or something. Feels like the early development of synthesizers with the very electronic feel. The electric guitar in the background is so nice, it feels very beachy and reminds me of the gleaming sun. The lyrics are seldom like the first song.

not exactly my vibe but good album i liked walk on and ambulance blues

Like a much more listenable Bob Dylan album.

I like Neil Young.

Love when Neil shreds.

Felt too brief.

Weird and dark album, but great songs

Decent old hippie rock

Really good record. Don’t know how often I’ll come back but it’s very good.

Yeah, this is good innit. I don't feel bad about not going to see him at glasto still though.

On The Beach Faves - Walk On - Revolution Blues 💙 - Vampire Blues 💙 - Motion Pictures (Not a slow song fan usually but the instrumentals is ASMR) Like as usual, a nice introduction to the vibe of the album with Walk On which I really enjoyed. Some of the songs sound like background songs to a movie scene in the 70s or something (since the album is from then). I did listen to the remastered version for the in real time pleasure which was so good. I didn't love every song but the Faves that stood out songs to me I ABSOLUTELY ADORED. The cover reminds me of Neil Shute's On The Beach book cover? Maybe it was intentional. Great book tbf. I give it a 4, despite not loving most of the record, I like that it was a chill listen. The lyrics were interesting ngl and I like the record was sonically cohesive. Ambulance Blues is giving Bobby Dylan 💅🏼

Great stuff. Various musical styles, but lyrically pretty melancholy. From "On the Beach,": I need a crowd of people But I can't face them day to day, Though my problems are meaningless That don't make them go away.

This was great, I really need to give this another listen and check out more of his work. 4.5/5

Far from my favorite Neil album but pretty solid.

Never in my life did I pay attention to Neil Young, but this is drastically changing since I'm playing this 1001 game, as I get an album by him every other week. Regarding this one, I liked it. I listened to it while driving on a certain day when I felt miserable. This album made me feel more miserable, which is probably the right expectation. Also, it had a really good blues. Recommended.

Great album, Neil Young dabbles alternately in country and blues rock

I think, through listening to one of these albums nearly every day for roughly two years, I've come around a bit on Neil Young. I don't think I like the first album we had from him, but I'm really enjoying this one. I still don't particularly like his voice, but his lyricism and theme are on point while his band (and I presume his guitar playing) are on point. A really beautiful album. I don't really know what more I can even say about Neil on like the 5th or 6th album of his that I've listened to. While there's not a lot that changes from album to album, I think this is one of my favorites from him that I've heard so far. It's gentle and melancholic, without being slow or sad. Favorite Song(s): See the Sky About to Rain, Ambulance Blues

pleasant

Gefällt mi sehr gut, sehr entspannt

Gorgeous I love walk on so it was a lovely start

Never thought I’d be a Noel Young fan. Love the album.

What a record. The three "Blues" songs ara a cut above. For my money as listenable album as the man ever made. And he's made a few.

First experience listening to a whole Neil Young album, possibly apart from Harvest. Had liked various songs without ever looking much deeper, partly because I do find his voice off-putting. But this was good and grew on repeated listens.

Another classic 70’s album from Uncle Neil. I own an OG copy on vinyl have listened to it numerous times. This album never really got the credit it deserves in my opinion, but it has his classic 70’s sound that everyone loves. I guess probably because there really isn’t a “single” or even cult favorite track that everyone loves. Like how “Cortez the Killer” totally makes “Zuma”. But I love this record. I think it’s a nice balance of his crazy horse sound and his solo sound.

Sort of a sad, tired sounding masterpiece.

Who knew there were so many types of blues?

I really don't want to like Neil and I docked his last album one star for being a jerk, but fair is fair and this deserves 4 stars.

Classic blues and early folk rock. Voice and feel like no other.

I have been a Neal Young fan for a very long time - I remember the release of Harvest, but this one got a bit overlooked. Nonetheless, several of the songs are familiar from the Decades release and most of what's on here is very good - couple of dead spots for me.

Really enjoyable listen. Surprisingly jaunty and poppy. Very much enjoying "walk on".

As with most of Young's stuff I feel like I need to give it more time to sink in than this project really allows for, so I'm giving this a 4 based on the vibe and the hope that it'll be an album that grows on me.

Quite good, I liked this one.

it's probably been said a thousand times but looking at this guy you would never guess he has the voice he does. love you to death neil young

Terribly depressing and beautiful at the same time. Perfectly captures the mid-70's mood.

I knew a couple of the songs here, like Walk On and Revolution Blues, but I had never listened to this full album before, nor did I know the lore of it as a lost album. I really enjoyed this, toward the end it started to drag a bit for me, but I think that may have been more to do with me being less familiar with those songs and it being January so everything just kind of drags around here anyway.

Nur 8 Lieder shesh. Aber Neil Young nice. Wenig deutsch, viel muzik.

This is the best Neil Young record I've had so far. A good variety of songs although the last song droned on.

Very solid

4.5 but I can’t do a half. So close to a perfect album, motion pictures for Carrie is GOATed.

This was a great antidote to the depresso Radiohead lol.

I have listened to Neil Young’s music before. Listening conditions: making and eating eggs in the morning, and driving to work. This is the second album in a row that including a song that had themes about sucking blood. I fear sol is trying to push an agenda here. This album was more of a sound I’m used to. I think because if I was multitasking for some of the songs I don’t really remember them too well, which I am sad about because I enjoyed all the songs I was actively listening to. I enjoyed the last song but left very confused at what it was about. My favourite song was the first one “Walk On”. I thought it was interesting how completely different the vibe of the first and last songs were. It probs has some deeper meaning but I refuse to look introspectively, or think to work it out. Side note: I wish there were was half stars in this cause this is a 3.5 for me (like the last one). I’m feeling happy so it’s getting a 4

An incredibly sweet album, the guy knows his way around a solo that's for sure❗️❗️ took me a while to get into but really liked the last few songs

Love it - classic Neil young. Southern-y. Blues-y. Kinda weird

I quite like a bit of Neil Young. The voice is OK and the style of music he’s played generally is up my street. I had no idea what era this was from - parts of it are similar to much more modern stuff, like Living with War. Perhaps I prefer that a little, but this is still pretty good. The second of many Young albums. The second four, although this is a 4+ I think. I listened four, maybe five times, but it’s a short album and an easy enough listen. It’s nice to find a really solid album on this list rather than one with a great single or two dominating it. And a stunner of a cover image btw. Although you can keep the typeface. E2a: it’s also inspired me to go listen to that 2006 Living with War album again, both the release and the Raw version. Fuck me, but that’s a really fucking good album, especially the Raw version. Maybe by the morning this might be a 5- as a result. E2a2: not quite. Just doesn’t hold up to Living with War

There are 8 songs on this album. A few of them are sublime. See the Sky About to Rain is the standout for me. Moving Pictures is also very lovely.. Overall I enjoyed 7 out of the 8 songs.. But he had to go ruin things smack dab in the middle by singing with that horrible falsetto on the song “For the Turnstiles”. It’s a shame because it took me out of my enjoyment for a bit. But overall a very good album.

It’s a little boring but it’s still a great listen.

Haven't heard this one by the prolific Neil Young. I dig it. Walk On starts with a really nice breezy riffy hook to it that instantly got me feeling this collection of songs.

This was a good first album to hit. I hadn't heard it before, and I liked the laid back, sometimes bluesy sound, even if a couple songs were a bit of a slog to get through. All the "Blues" songs are bangers, See the Sky About to Rain and On the Beach are too slow and meandering.

I didn’t think anything was too groundbreaking with this one but it was still nice to listen to, I added 5/8 songs and also liked the last song but it’s too long for me to add in my playlist. Wasn’t too crazy about the folky songs but I really liked everything else.

Didn't give it a proper listen, pleasant sounding folk.

First neil young album i really enjoyed. I get the hype now

8/10 All we need sometimes is some peace and quiet. This album is exactly that, the wailing guitars and the dissonant yet soothing vocals can only bring peace to mind when listening to the album. Favourite tracks: See the sky about to rain For the turnstiles Least favourite tracks: Motion Pictures (For Carrie)

This was very good.

Not his best. I already have this album, but was disappointed by it and haven't played it for 20 years. Played it 2 or 3 times today and liked it more, but still not one of his best. I'll leave it another 20 years to see if it improves. But it's still Neil Young, so 4 stars.

Alright, this is my third Neil Young album on this journey after getting Harvest and Rust Never Sleeps. I will say I like this album, even if I feel that the overall tone is slower and more laid-back than what I’ve previously heard from Neil. From what I’ve read about the recording sessions, musician Rusty Kershaw was sharing with Neil and his mates a concoction of sautéed marijuana and honey. That and Neil’s insistence on using the rough mixes resulted in On the Beach sounding overall mellower, albeit with a few sparks of abrasive energy on opening single “Walk On” and “Revolution Blues”. It’s not a bad fit for Neil, as he still maintained a strong sense of songwriting, ranging from lashing out at corporate industries on “From the Turnstiles” and “Vampire Blues”, to taking on his critics on “Ambulance Blues”, and more introspective muses on “Walk On”, “See the Sky About to Rain” and “Motion Pictures”. It just would have been nice if there was more immediacy in the performance and tighter compositions. Still, I had a good time On the Beach, and I look forward to the next Neil Young album I get.

Solid album

This was great Neil Young music. Four stars.

0001 / 22.12.2023 So... this is the first album 1001albumsgenerator gave me. I haven't heard a single Neil Young song before and I don't even recognize any of their names. This is a very chill and nice album. I don't have much to say about it, just listen to it if you just want something relaxing. The only downside is that the songs drag on quite a bit and four minutes can feel like ten sometimes, but other than that, it's a very good album. I'll probably put it on sometime while trying to fall asleep, and I mean that as a good thing Choruses - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Mixing - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Lyrics - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Vocals - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Instrumentation - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Rating - 80 Highlights: Revolution Blues; Vampire Blues; Motion Pictures (For Carrie); Ambulance Blues Lowlights: N/A

This is one I didn't think would be in the book, mainly because it's not as talked about as much as say Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Harvest, After The Gold Rush or Rust Never Sleeps. But it's solid album for sure if not in his upper echelon. (8.9) ★★★★

I was initially going to give this album a lower rating, but I felt like that wasn’t fair, considering I primarily listened to the music rather than the lyrics on my playthrough. That’s how I listen to music — first to the music itself, and then to the lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, the music is top-notch, filled with a variety of instruments and interesting chord progressions. But with an artist like Neil Young, you have to give the lyricism the same weight as the composition. So I took it upon myself to look up some of the lyrics, and damn, do some of them hit hard. In “See the Sky About to Rain,” Young sings “Some are bound for happiness, some are bound to glory / Some are bound to live with less, who can tell your story?” That stanza really stood out to me. Young’s strength lies in his words, and the man can certainly tell a story. Musically though, the album is pretty strong as well. “Walk On” utilizes the slide guitar well, while “For the Turnstiles” features a banjo. The second half of the album is noticeably more mellow in sound, even dark at times, and the final track, “Ambulance Blues,” is nothing more than Young with his guitar for a good chunk (there ARE some wonderful strings as well). The Wikipedia article for this album credits a cannabis concoction known as “honey slides” for this change of tone, and considering I live in a legal state, Mr. Young may have inspired an ill-advised cooking experiment…

This is a surprisingly catchy album. Is it the best I've ever heard? no, but it was still a delight. On The Beach reminds me of a slightly worse version of Solid Air, which was one of my favorite albums of this whole project. Best Songs: Walk On, On the Beach, Ambulance Blues Worst Songs: For the Turnstiles

SHUT UP it's Neil Young

Great album! Neil being super introspective about his own "fame" and trying to escape it. Not outright sad or depressing, but certainly not upbeat either. Tunes are mostly slow, and lyrics are very emotionally powerful. Might not be my favorite album or era of his, but WELL worth keeping in rotation.

Vampire Blues está buenísima

A classic album - 4.5/5

This album doesn’t make me feel like I’m on the beach, it feels more like a prairie, that being said, it’s still really good.

A very enjoyable and solid country rock album. This was my first time listening, and I have to say, while a few tracks could be stronger, the majority of the album is great.

4.5 stars. Mellow folk rock that incorporates some banjo and harmonica well. Well written melodies. Lyrics go through various moods throughout (angry "Revolution Blues"). Standouts are leadoff "Walk On" and "For The Turnstiles".

Muy bueno. En su mejor momento

i vibed with this

This album is a laid-back blend of folk, rock, country, and blues, with only a couple of tracks breaking the mellow vibe to pick up the tempo. What really stood out to me was the lo-fi production. It has a raw, unpolished feel that gives the album an intimate and personal touch. It’s like you’re sitting in a cozy bar, soaking in the live music as it plays in the background. The raw edges and stripped down sound create a vibe that feels grounded and authentic, making this one of those albums where the atmosphere is just as important as the music itself.

83% Best: Walk On; Revolution Blues; On the Beach Must-Hear? Sure

I don't know if Neil young is growing on me or we're just getting his better albums later in this list. This was pretty decent too! I'm starting to really like his voice, you don't get many people who can't really sing like this in his era, much more common these days. Makes it more interesting. I'm not sure I'm a nailed on fan yet but it was good.

Some songs are weaker than others, but Neil Young (as always) nails the granola life, and, as a fan of slower music, I really found this album to be quite moving and pleasant to listen to. FAVORITE SONG: See the Sky About to Rain

This album is very good and solid. I like Neil's writing style of blues and folk rock. Revolution Blues rocks, though I think I like Ambulance Blues the most here. I don't know why it evokes so much nostalgia for a song I've never heard, but I really enjoy the long journey this song takes me on.

Pretty solid album. Lots of different feelings throughout it.

I'm not a huge Neil Young fan by any stretch, but this album is fantastic. Good low-key, sinister sounding tracks along with some rootsier songs that don't have as much of a focus on his vocals. Maybe it's the Rusty Kershaw involvement, but I like this way more than I expected to.

Neil Young's "On The Beach," released in 1974, stands out as arguably his most optimistic work, radiating a sense of warmth and reflection amidst the uncertainties of life. The album features a blend of poignant lyrics and soothing melodies that convey a search for solace and understanding. Tracks like "Walk On" and "See the Sky About to Rain" reveal a deeper, almost hopeful perspective, suggesting that despite the chaos, there is beauty to be found in the journey. This shift in tone marks a contrast to his previous darker and more introspective albums, hinting at a celebration of resilience and the human spirit. However, as the album progresses, it becomes apparent that this positivity may ultimately lead to a sense of aimlessness. While the hopeful messages resonate, listeners may find themselves pondering what direction this optimism is meant to guide them toward. The closing tracks, despite their beauty, leave an impression of wandering rather than arriving, embodying a feeling of restlessness. Thus, while "On The Beach" indeed shines with a more uplifting atmosphere, it paradoxically feels like a serene journey that doesn’t quite culminate in a definitive destination.

Lovely album. It has a sort of bittersweet nostalgia to it. Favorites: See the Sky About to Rain, Ambulance Blues

- 4/8 songs added to main playlist - Favorite song: Motion Pictures (For Carrie)

Perfect other-people's-vibe music for wrapping presents to. Melancholy but free

Probably the best Neil album I’ve heard on here? Which isn’t saying much. It still has all the same problems, this one just manages to finally have some bops

I still find Young's whiny vocals irritating at times. Occasionally lyrically obvious. Better than "After the Gold Rush?" 4/5

not neils best but some good songs

Another familiar singer.

Neil Young is always one of my favorate songwriters. His lyrics are poetic, and his music makes me feel, how to say...calm? A sense of serenity. It's not complicated or rushed, has no intention to arouse your excitement, he just paces steadily, and that brings some kind of integrity. On The Beach is not my favorite album, but it's still an easy 4/5. See The Sky About To Rain is one of the best.

Pretty interesting start for a challenge. Immediate impression is that the album is quite well-named, even if it might be for the title track. Its vibe, despite it being rather downer and melancholic for most of the runtime, is quite beachy, and I think the dissonance works really well. The album cover illustrates this dissonance pretty well, depicting the weather on the beach Neil is standing on as rather gray and overcast. The instrumentation is masterfully crafted, and speaks a lot of the talent and coordination of all the musicians involved. The lyricism, however, is something rather jarring to me as someone who's not very familiar with this era of music. It's simplistic but a bit opaque at times, and it takes some extra commitment to understand the meaning of some of the short passages that permeate through the album. I typically think of great lyrics as something with many layers that has a lot to digest, but manages accessibility without compromising the core, so this rather sparse writing caught me by surprise. When I heard that Young is an acclaimed lyricist, I did not expect to hear the songs I could easily summarize with a single sentence. Not to say that I hate it, though. The lack of understanding of certain moments that got me to google more it's kind of a "me" problem, as events he touches on, such as Watergate and the presence of Charles Manson in popular culture, are not something that's ever been contemporary to me. Moreover, when I accepted the songs for what they are, their intricacies did show up on me, especially on the more emotionally charged moments like Walk On, where he brazenly states that he cannot appease the shit talkers, and the final three-track song run, where Neil laments on his self-perception of waning relevancy and the world being in such a continuous movement it feels like it is leaving him behind. What prevails in the lyricism isn't so much the substance itself as it is the tone it's delivered in. The emotion leaves a more lasting experience than the lyrics themselves. I had a great time with this album overall, and it did raise my appetite both for the folk and country music, as well as other albums in Neil Young's discography. Actual rating for me is 9/10, or 4.5/5.

Just a great sad little album. It's a bit all over the place in terms of genre and instrumentation, but the storytelling and lyrics pull it all together. On The Beach is his coolest track for me.

Neil is solid, always seems to deliver.

Very pleasant album - great musician

A really well rounded album. Sad, yet hopeful. Peak country/folk rock.

The older I get the more I like Neil Young,

8/10 - so underrated. combines beatlesy stuff with what i already knew i loved abt neil young. love

Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Getting Neil back into my rotation for the year. Easy listening, slow.

This was definitely not what I expected. I personally enjoyed the album and the string instrumentals. I think given its decade, it's an overall great album.

I quite liked this album. I had never even heard of this one and was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it. I have meant to listen to more Neil Young outside of his first few albums so this is the start of that journey for me.

Very good, so smooth, and calm like most Neil Young. Beautiful

Neil really is the main man. Long after his 'Decade' golden era, he was/is still regularly churning out work of incredible quality. I feel like this album was quite overlooked at the time, though in retrospect it's a cracker.

Siis see the sky about to rain… oon kuullu tän biisin jossain ja ettiny sitä tosi pitkään ja ku tää alko soimaan olin vaa vitun flabbergasted. All in all nautin tästä tosi paljon!

Never listened to a Neil Young album before but this is really good.

Not much to say, great album. The title track is astounding. 8/10 Fav tracks - All-1 Least Fav - See the Sky about rain

Like Neil Youngs stuff, gives me hill billy lite vibes. Got some banjo's and shit but he doesn't sound hick i guess, its nice. Ironically On the beach which is definitely more rock than anything was my favourite. Overall, like Neil Young, sings a good tale on most of his songs, including most of this ablum.

Gonna keep this one short. My first proper introduction to Neil Young. The southern man may not need him around but I certainly do. Highlights were Revolution Blues, On The Beach, Walk On

I hadn't ever listened to this album in spite of listening to a fair bit of Neil Young, but I definitely plan to again. I love how raw and dark it is. You can feel the anger not only in his voice, but the way he plays the guitar. The cover is really striking too.

Relaxing, vacation feeling

A nice selection of cozy sounding songs. Standout tracks: Walk On, See The Sky About To Rain

Had a good time listening to the album. It felt inviting. Mix of rock, country, and blues. I had heard two of the songs before. The music has an air of nostalgia around it, not for me personally, but it sounds like it. A time capsule. Standouts: Walk On, See The Sky About To Rain, On The Beach, and Motion Pictures (For Carrie).

I’m always surprised when I listen to an Al um by an artist whose oeuvre I think I know top to bottom, only to realize that I really just know their big songs and an album or two that I’ve put the time into. Not surprisingly, I felt that with “On the Beach”. “For the Turnstiles” and “Walk On” are great songs all day, every day, but I was pleased to ‘discover’ “See the Sky About to Rain”, which is been completely without prior. Aside - did anyone else notice that Wikipedia lists Neil as a “Canadian-American” musician. You know you’ve made it to the top when America lies to call you their own! I’d say 3.5, but gave 4 so Neil remembers where he’s from…

I love Neil Young. Period. But listening to this album reminded me that my exposure.to and experience with him comes largely from selected playlists and greatest hits collections, which ignore.a lot.of the experiences that this album exposed me to.... And it made me think that art and music are processes, feeling around in the dark for sounds and visions to express and materialize ideas....and so much of that, even if recorded, mastered, and released, is just a record of process, of that hunt. Not for all artists, of course....but I get that feeling with this album. It's a record of creative process, a sense of exploration and attempt. And it's not all good or memorable...but it is worthwhile.

Because it was out of print at a time when I was discovering music and getting into Neil young, this album was always mythical to me. I had heard the couple of tracks on decade but nothing else. When it was finally released I didn’t give it the time it deserved. Listening now, I realize how beautiful it is and found myself returning to it yesterday. The back half is hazy and reeks of honey slides. What a line up on revolution blues! Definitely will be in regular rotation from now on

I've really gotten to like Neil Young over the last few years. I've always liked his voice but never gave him too much of a chance outside a few songs. I'm not sure why. I guess maybe because I hate the sort of Crosby Stills and Nash kind of genre and he's certainly done a lot of that. I really liked this album though. It's super chill, the instrumentation is fantastic, vocals are great (if you like Neil Young's voice anyway...), and it's great lyrically. Absolutely stupid and contrived cover. Maybe more than any of his other records this is one that I would throw on, make a cocktail, and just kind of hang out with it. Overall, I'd rate this one at about 3.75/5 maybe approaching 4. Nothing really stood out but it's all solid.

I really liked Walk on and Vampire Blues. The album as a whole has a great vibe and I understand why NY is so loved

Great album from start to finish.

Delightfully autumnal

This is a cool album. Very atmospheric for Neil Young. It's not one of his biggest albums, and doesn't have any of his best songs, but it is a very good album nonetheless.

Favs: Revolution Blues, Vampire Blues, On the Beach, Ambulance Blues Least fav: For the Turnstiles

Brilliant album.

Good album but there’s better Neil Young out there so I don’t get why this makes the list

8.5/10

Like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young is one of those OG critically acclaimed singer-songwriter folk artists that I just hadn't gotten around to checking out until this list. The best thing by far about this album is how uniquely bleak it is. Even the album cover here, depicts a beach, something you typically associate with joy, in the most empty and void way. Obviously, this parallels the title track in meaning more than anything, a song about Neil's sense of isolation alongside his fame (something he may consider typically joyful as it ties to his art I assume?). Musically though, a song like 'See the Sky About to Rain' sounds like a happy day on the beach - but this day is mildly gloomy and tinted with uncertainty and sadness. Three songs here reference "blues" which sorta adds to the lethargic and apathetic feel to everything here. The songs are slow and sort of trudge on. The 8-minute closer 'Ambulance Blues' perfectly captures this. This song slowly marches on, with this melancholic harmonica interluding the various opaque verses. While on the surface level, it may seem like there's nothing unique about this folk record, experiencing it as a whole I came to find that Neil Young was capable of drawing out a very strong emotion from me through both his writing and through the simplistically dim sonic direction this album goes in.

Why did I think I didn't like Neil Young?! Really good album.

Was really good, I like the use of harmonica in some songs

Neil Young being Neil Young.

I quite dig some introspective, moodier, sparse country rock Neil Young. Quite the good album

Neil Young always has done whatever he wants, and he is a bit of a complainer, isn't he? His complaining is usually relatable and soulful, right-minded, pointed. Here he acquires a bitterness and edge that follows him for the rest of his days. Neil's a sensitive dude. He does the Dylan thing on "Revolution Blues," still doing the Neil Young thing, with the David Crosby guitar thing. Brilliant song. This is kind of a masterpiece, now I'm listening to it again. All the "... Blues" are phenomenal, the country instrumentation is spot on, the metaphors are sharpened like vampire teeth ( 😘 ), and Neil's unmistakable voice is still youthful and pointed. On the whole, it's just... so... ornery? Jaded? I strongly recommend going for a nice walk on a late summer afternoon while listening to this and getting caught in a massive downpour as the album build to its crescendo with "Ambulance Blues." Just walk on home, try to get through it, maybe. "Though my problems are meaningless, that doesn't make them go away." It's 'cause you have the curse of genius, Neil. Thanks for sharing.

Fringe Top 5 young album for me. That’s still elite for most other artists.

definitely worthy of how much people talk about him, my first Neil Young album/listen ever

fav tracks: Walk On, See the Sky About to Rain, Revolution Blues, On the Beach, Motion Pictures Thoughts: Very Nice Album! My favorite track on this album would have to be "On the Beach", although I very much enjoy the other tracks listed above. The tone of this album overall is dark and bluesy, with hints of psych-y mikey on more mellow tracks like "See the Sky About to Rain", which is driven by a wobbly bobbly guitar melody. This album is great, and I'm looking forward to eventually listening to the rest of Neil Young's discography.

Liked it, didnt grab me as much as Harvest by him

Short and hella better than expected. Nothing ground breaking, but that might be because I am listening to it 50 years after it was released.

I think that the best thing about this project is that I’ve really become a fan of Neil Young in the process. Enjoyed this album a lot.

Rusty Kershaw and honeyslides ftw.

pretty dang good but not my fav neil highlights: walk on, revolution blues, vampire blues (may 5 2024)

Normally I can only handle 3 Neil Young songs in a row, lets see how this goes. Pretty decent album, managed to last the whole way through without skipping anything. The title track is amazing. Does get a little same-ey towards the end.

Have this on Vinyl. Need to listen again as it sounded pretty good this time streaming

A refreshing walk on the beach is not what I would expect from Neil Young at this point. What a surprise!

listened to this twice - first with headphones and second driving the li expressway. glad i did. giving this a hearty 4 stars - it's a great listen and definitely one to add to my personal library. jammy, sad, angry, vaguely hopeful. nice going neil

Got a 👍 track from this album so giving it a 4. I think the energy level from Neil was much more enjoyable than Crazy Horse.

Solid Young, which is saying a lot after Tonight’s the Night. Good blues riffs.

Rock melódico de Neil Young. Un 4.

Favourite tracks: walk on; for the turnstiles; on the beach; motion pictures

Chilled, uncomplicated.

This album was a nice surprise. I had not heard of this Neil Young album preciously and, it is very good! It is Neil at his most melancholy, but at the same time, you feel like he is just getting something off his mind and things will be OK. Songs of note include \"Revolution Blues\", \"Vampire Blues\", \"On The Beach\" and \"Motion Pictures\". As an aside, there is some good guitar work on this album and guest players include Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Steven Stills and David Crosby.

Even though I am a Neil Young fan, I didn't know this album. I enjoyed it! Not quite like Harvest or After The Gold Rush but the songs are very good, just maybe a bit less "wow", but great all the same.

Listened while two NYC teens talked shit about Lily the baby from Modern Family, who’s apparently in their grade, just as Neil Young intended

Good stuff. Another hole in my musical education. Another one I expected to like – and did, in fact, like.

Great album.

Not top tier Neil Young but still an enjoyable listen

++: For the Turnstiles, Vampire Blues, Ambulance Blues +: Walk On, Revolution Blues, On the Beach, Motion Pictures, +-: See the Sky About to Rain 8,8/10

Not a huge fan, but this was an enjoyable listen.

As much as I dont really love neil or indie, I have to say objectivly this album is near perfect and will be added to my rotation. Maybe not as an album single songs may not work the same but this album is a masterpiece much better than harvest. Nice mix of 7 songs balanced perfectly between rock, indie, country and blues.

J'aime ça NY.

great Neil young album, amazing title track

Solid collection of songs

Great beach vibes!

lite sömnigt album men väldigt fint också

Gostei bastante. Álbum excelente.

favorite NY album so far. 3.5

probably my favorite neil young album. whenever i hear this album it makes me wanna check out other stuff from him then im disappointed it doesnt sound more like this. strong 8/10

i was vibing

Not bad.

Not for me, but great for others.

Well-titled, relaxing album, not super catchy but well put together. 3.6

Great stuff. Reads as 60s Dylanesque in some places, but I'm not complaining. The harmonica-acoustic guitar-lamenting husky vocal combo can do wonders sometimes. Plus, tracks like On The Beach and See The Sky About To Rain absolutely nail the singer-songwriter blues ideal, and it's a joy to hear. Like other Neil Young albums, I was initially a little peeved by his quavery voice. But after a certain point, you can learn to ignore it. For some tracks here, it actually worked to his advantage, such as the mournful-sounding Motion Pictures (where it, correctly, sounded like Young was on the verge of tears). My complaint here is that the genre and combination of instruments are very much playing a safe card. Apart from many of the tracks (particularly on side 2) sounding very similar, the musical upheaval of the late 60s and early 70s had already happened by this point, and artists like Neil Young are still releasing unexperimental, (arguably) overdone genres by the mid-70s? Live life on the edge a little, Youngster! 4/5 Key tracks: Walk On, See The Sky About To Rain, Vampire Blues, On The Beach

I don’t have a lot to say about this album. It was fine, but not my fave. It’s interesting in the context of this being a response to his mainstream success.

I appreciate it even if I didn't strictly enjoy it. I can tell he influenced a lot of my faves though!

Neil Young is someone I never found a path to, and this album made me want to correct that. I especially liked the last three songs which were so laid back and unhurried. I thought I would hate his voice but I loved it.

It’s not the best Neil Young album, but it does have highlights. Ambulance Blues is amazing!

Pretty good.. After a few listens I realized how melancholy this album is.

Didn't know this album. It's good. "Walk On" is a strong opener, the rest is kinda slow & introspective, save for "Revolution Blues" which gives us a flash of the angry Young. Glad I came around.

Fine. Now I’m a Neil Young fan. YOU’RE WELCOME.

What an amazing album! This album is one of the best Neil young albums I have ever heard. It was almost a 5 but I know that there has to be at least one or two more Neil albums that top it. Great album and glad it made the list.
