Reviews (page 6 of 13)
What an amazing album! This album is one of the best Neil young albums I have ever heard. It was almost a 5 but I know that there has to be at least one or two more Neil albums that top it. Great album and glad it made the list.
Chill vibe and a good folk music.
Neil Young is the singer of one of my favorite songs, but I had never listened to anything else from his. That's why this album was a good surprise: something to listen to relax and unwind.
Another excellent Neil Young album! Not a bad track on this one, and I never even heard of the album! Really enjoyed this one!
A melancholy and stripped down performance that resonates today with the juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness of Americana.
Neil Young at the height of his pomp and majesty. Though, strange enough, the first two tracks didn't grab me, and I'm an avowed fan. The good news is that everything else did. 'Revolution Blues', 'For the Turnstiles' and 'Vampire Blues' is an incredible trifecta, bang bang bang, one after another. Nobody could pull off this kind of ragged, bleary-eyed folk rock like Young. Plenty have since tried, and perhaps gotten close; but when the big dog's in town there are no true competitors.
The vibe feels like someone on the beach playing some songs. I liked it! Not my favorite Young record but a strong one. 4/5
Very chill album.
Underrated Neil hits the sweet spot every time. Drenched in weedy good times. Love it.
I loved it great album
"See the Sky about to rain" ist mein Lieblingslied.
A good solid Neil Young album! Thoroughly enjoyable. Very pleasing. Quintessential
Very pleasant listen, with nice guitars sprinkled in. I could tell some of my favorite albums were inspired by this. 4/5
good
I’d never heard a Neil Young album before. I’ve always known who he is and that he’s significant. But I’d never listened to a full album. This was great. Definitely warrants another listen to focus more on the lyrics. But right after a Dylan album, I can see how this would scratch the same itch. I loved the vibe throughout. Some songs hit better than others (did not get “Vampire Blues,” though I assume it’s a metaphor for something…oil?), but overall I liked most of what I heard. Good job, Neil. 4 stars. Standout tracks: Walk On, See the Sky About to Rain, Revolution Blues, For the Turnstiles, On the Beach, Ambulance Blues
Interesting music
Glad he came back to spotify so I could listen to this
Sadly does not feature a lyric that says “like Mario and Princess Beach”
This was a surprise in that I'm surprised I liked it so much. I figured I'd already heard all the good Neil Young songs, though I now realize that no, I've heard the best Neil Young songs... I felt it was blessed with a hint of Bob Dylan in places...
Great classic Neil Young. Really enjoyed the vibe and Young’s vocals are always something that I like, even if they’re not for everyone.
The somewhat muted follow up to Harvest. Really quite atmospheric though in an understated kind of way. A consistent one. Won't set your hair on fire though. Solid, haunted and melancholy.
Got Rust Never Sleeps early on in this project and was surprised by how little I enjoyed it seeing as how I basically like Neil Young. This felt much more like what I was expecting. Side two is perfect "let's get some work done" music and See the Sky About to Rain is going in the permanent rotation.
Personally, Neil's voice and songs (at least on this album) are not one of those that leave you jaw-dropped and make you exclaim "WOW!", at least for me, but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. The truth is, I liked it a lot in general, it was not tedious to listen to it, I saved one or another in my likes. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's good but not a big deal, and that's enough.
This was great. Definitely need to listen to the entire trilogy.
Neil Young nailede virkelig en singer-songwriter stil som jeg virkelig godt kan lide tilbage i 70erne, jeg er personligt vild med hvor mange af de her plader vi har på listen
pretty good
Gostosinho e calmo, mas sem peças individuais muito memoráveis
Great album
Mooi geheel, wel een beetje te rustig.
I really enjoy this albun
superbly soothing and dreamy - I dont think anyone makes country this soft + lyrical - sounds almost hallucinogenic/dreamlike.
This was another album released while I was at Uni in Newcastle and rushed back to Sydney on the Flyer every Friday. Often I’d hit a record shop in the city if I wanted something urgently & this was one of those. I still have my American pressing & it still jumps half-way through Ambulance Blues, one of my favourites, with its refrain of “You’re all just pissing in the wind”. When I got back to Newcastle & put it on, I was hearing all those trax for the first time. I was probably hoping for Harvest Part2 but this wasn’t that. It was a gradual love affair, but Neil had me before long. The big news story around it, of course, was the fact that Revolution Blues had been inspired by Charles Manson, who Young met through Dennis Wilson, about 6 months before the Tate-La Bianca murders. Great work on this by The Band’s rhythm section. See The Sky About To Rain sounds like it should have been on Harvest but missed the cut. I love Young’s banjo on For The Turnstiles & I love Ben Keith’s slide guitar throughout. Of course we didn’t know at the time that he had already recorded the Tonight’s The Night album, with most of Crazy Horse, but put it on hold (released in 1975). The 2 albums are so different but both so good.
Bastante bueno! Muy relajante.
This definitely features Neil's voice more prominently. It's a nice album overall.
Folksy raw and enjoyable
Very good and surprisingly not typically what Neil Young people recommend.
I thought it was pretty good, laid back in a sort melanchonic way. Sounds like the hippie movement dying. His voice is a bit annoying though.
My first Neil young project! I'm sure there is plenty of growing room for this album with me, but for now, I'm just happy I got to experience this lovely bluesy day on the beach.
Well done album despite it not necessarily being my kind of music. The B-side tracks are all pretty good and I particularly liked Ambulance Blues’s lyrics. 3.5
I really liked "See the Sky About to Rain", reminds me of watching the fields at my grandma's house at 6pm. Some other songs I liked, some I didn't.
Great album. I feel like this is really where Neil found his own style. Just wish there were a few more upbeat songs.
Solid album with some great musicianship. Neil's got a weird voice, no?
Excellent album.
good stuff
Solidly enjoyable.
Leppoisaa country ja bluesia. Kivan akustista myös. Parhaat: On The Beach, Ambulance Blues,b
Neil Young is king of the emotive single note. Although his lyrics sometimes need more work, they are solidly built overall and the combination of the music and his singing usually hit the spot for resonating with the listener as they are often very story based rather than abstract or obscure. It is always interesting to me how he bridges a kind of Folk/Americana bringing in banjo, violin, harmonica, and often a strong blues influence, all surrounding an awesome sounding guitar that can really rock when he wants it to.
This rules. For The Turnstiles is a great track. Really awesome downbeat folk stylings out of Neil on this one.
#150. I don't knowall of Neil's work, but he always remained an eclectic songwriter . This was new to my ears - and glad to hear it. Wonderful lyric and acoustic guitars. "Ambulance Blues" poignant song. It may be fn bias but give it a 4
chill on the beach seit ewigkeiten auf meiner einen überhörten playlist
Great pop/rock album.
01) Walk On - 8,5 02) See the Sky About to Rain - 8,0 03) Revolution Blues - 8,0 04) For the Turnstiles - 8,5 05) Vampire Blues - 8,0 06) On the Beach - 9,0 07) Motion Pictures - 8,0 08) Ambulance Blues - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,25 (83/100) I never actually listened to Neil Young, so I'm looking forward to this one. Love the album cover. The guitars on "On The Beach" are great, I think that's my favorite song on the album.
All I had to do was complain, and Mr Young came back to spotify. Thank goodness!
Simplicity at its best.
(5,6/6)
Need to add this one to the rotation
ohhh neil...
I didn’t care for him talking about Vampires that just seemed weird but other than that it flowed well lyrically and stylistically
I liked. Nice guitar, I know some peeps don’t love his voice, I didn’t have a problem with it. Yes the lyrics are a little weird in spots and I didn’t understand what he was getting at but he sounded nice and it was kinda relaxing to listen too. Again, I do wish there weren’t three songs that were around 7 minutes, that’s just not necessary.
3.5 per track.
4.1 - Sometimes artists enjoy such a prolific period, writing enough songs to span multiple releases. One recent example that comes to mind is Radiohead -- they followed "Kid A" with the release of "Amnesiac" just seven months later, as a sort of compendium album of remnants from the original recording sessions. I'm sure Neil Young had plenty of songs that didn't make "Harvest" that he could've strung together into a similar sounding record. Instead, he chose to theme his follow-up around the emptiness of fame. Songs like "On The Beach", for example, tell of the isolation he felt after finally achieving his breakthrough moment. Of his records I've listened to, this one may be the slowest burn -- and given the subtlety in his songcraft, that's saying a lot. It took me almost a dozen listens to truly appreciate the quiet and sad beauty in these songs, but it was worth it. Other standouts: "See the Sky About to Rain", "For the Turnstiles", "Motion Pictures", "Ambulance Blues."
Favorite was "On The Beach"
Very contemplative listening experience. Perhaps the most engaging album lyrically so far for me. Favourite song on the album on initial listen is Motion Pictures (For Carrie) and it immediately went into my Liked Songs playlist as I was so taken with it. Disliked no songs on the album. I feel I'm only going to appreciate this more and more over time. Not necessarily so instantly catchy but may become more memorable after more listens.
i liked the vibes!! I think Walk On and Motion Pictures (For Carrie) were my faves also everytime For The Turnstiles played it caught my attention
Great album to just feel relaxed at work
Niceee
This was a hard one to listen to. I mean physically. It wasn't available on Spotify, I had to use Amazon music which kept stopping midway. Really annoying. First world problems... This was really good. My main exposure to Neil Young is the double CD Decade compilation. It was great just hearing a single album of an era. I enjoyed every track. 5 stars, not quite. I'm rounding down to 4, but it's close.
Hidden gem unknown to me. Favorite songs; On the Beach & ambulance blues.
“Though your confidence may be shattered, it doesn’t matter.” Musta been a rough patch for him. This is true NY pluckin’ (and crooning) from the down in the dumps (soul?) Kinda bummed by the end of the experience, but The Man can connect and tell a tale, sad as it may be. I really don’t want to like this album (too melancholy) but damn it’s good. Please bring a smile to my eyes… Walk On (3.9*s)
Sing it Neil!
7 of 8 songs on this album are absolute winners. "Vampire Blues"...... well....it sucks. It sucks. It's everything that kept me from liking Neil Young in the past. Other than that, this is a fantastic, wistful album. "Sky About to Rain" has some gorgeous slide guitar work and the opener has some equally gorgeous harmonies. "Revolution Blues" is another great political chaos song. This seems to be a specialty of his with hard marching drum beats and stream of consciousness lyrics that feel like the narrator is half concussed. Young had a keen understanding of how country and roots music sunk up nicely with Laurel Canyon singer/songwriter culture. This feels like a story of a country boy stranded in California and burning out.
Kannte ich noch nicht. Schöner Blues. Gut durchzuhören.
Great album! Too bad he took all his music from Spotify. But I love his sound. If I can find it I will try and listen more to his music. Favourite song: -Ambulance blues
good
I'm not sure if Neil Young is a fan of the author Nevil Shute, but this album suggests much the same as the great novel 'On The Beach.'
I like Neil Young, halfway through the album and I feel like the songs aren't really resonating with me. But the 2nd half seemed to have a better flow and I started to dig it. I loved Ambulance Blues. I'll add the album in Tidal to give it another listen sometime.
how have I not listened to Neil Young sooner??
Seagull line hit for me
It's Neil Young. Who doesn't like Neil Young?
much better than the advert song with the fat kid
This is terrific
I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. Really enjoyed this. May have to do a deep dive into more of his music.
See, that’s what I’m talking about. I like Neil Young but I don’t really know much beyond the radio and soundtrack hits. I didn’t know any of these songs going in but I soon found myself singing along with the choruses. I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled for this one is goodwill stores and yard sales. Songs added to Spotify: 0 (Neil don’t play that way)
Finding a way to listen to a full Neil Young album online is like some sort of quest now but it's so worth it. This album is marked with all his signature melancholy and withdrawn vibes of post-Harvest, it's a hidden gem for sure. See the Sky About to Rain is incredible, many good ones on here. I loved this whole album and I miss hearing him come up on a Spotify playlist.
Favorite tracks: Motion Picture and Ambulance Blues
Mellow, yet purposeful songwriting
I really liked this album.
Ik kon hier wel lekker op viben.
Definitely seemed like I didn't 'get' Neil Young the first half, but the title track and a number of others made me remember the first time I heard 'Cinnamon Girl.' Looking forward to more.
Beautiful Young album! Need to get this one. Not my favorite, but still very good.
I really love Neil Young and have seen him in concert a couple times, used to own quite a few of his albums, etc., but I'm pretty sure I missed this one in all that. It's quite good. Melancholic and brooding, but not in a bad way.
Nice songwriting. Big dad music vibes.
There has been a fair bit of Neil Young on this generator. There have been some albums I really enjoyed, and some that didn’t really do anything for me. He is clearly very loved within the music industry, so it will always be interesting to hear more of his music. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: See The Sky About To Rain, On The Beach This was really quite pleasant. I listened to this during a study session, and appreciated how chilled out and easy to listen to it was. It definitely has country elements, which very often is a big turn off for me, but it was much nicer here. I was a little deflated once it got to the end, as I was hoping for more. That definitely says a lot about a country album! Would recommend, give it a listen.
Not in spotify my guy, but great album
super chill, nice discovery! wouldn't have thought to listen to Neil Young
One of the best, certainly of Neil’s best . Walk on rules
I really enjoyed the instrumentation used on this record its very mellow and minimalistic but works well with the whole tracklist to make a cohesive project. The mellotron style instrument on "See the Sky About to Rain" is really nice. The guitar tones are gorgeous I really enjoy a good jangly rhythm guitar riff like on "Revolution Blues". On the Beach is absolutely beautiful the vocals and chords are Marvin Gaye-esque and it works so well with his rough voice. Its a highlight on a brilliant album. That chord change to a 7th (i think) - I'm obsessed with it, the lyrics are melancholy and also sparsely strewn out to let the song breathe. Motion Picture is nice and then Ambulance Blues is nicer (vocab needs work) but again the instrumentation is brilliant the tone of everything is perfect especially the bass and guitar. So overall its a 9/10 for me.
LOVING the song on the beach so far the harmonica in ambulance blues is a little jarring tbh Nice easy listening, could see myself adding a few songs to the rotation
Laid back and reflective. Although I don't normally like Neil Young. After reading the notes about this album, the mood certainly fit the description - hiding from alienation after the success of Harvest.
One of my favourite things that can happen with albums, is when the last song is a good bit longer than all the rest, and it's also the best song on there. This happens here, probably my favourite Neil Young album of the ones i've heard.
Love it.
The crown jewel of the Ditch Trilogy. Essential NY that shows Neil's darker and more disturbed side. Maybe one too many slow ramblers one after another to make it 5 stars.
It sat unrated for a while as I wanted to revisit.
It was pretty soothing
took me back to my wild days
4/5
An interesting, complex and somewhat downbeat album. Was enough to get me to subscribe to the Neil Young Archives site though - massive fan 😊
Both halves of On the Beach have their own vibe. First half is more upbeat and folksy. The second half is more calm and meditative. Would like to continue to revisit Neil Young's discography in the future. *Heard before.
Yesterday’s album was LA Woman so it’s been great fun hearing just how differently you can interpret a basic blues structure! Definitely needs a second listen. Sure, all albums get better after multiple listens but particularly with albums like this where the songs don’t massively distance themselves from each other in style, theme and energy, it’s never more needed. Listen 1 was a nice gentle folky mush. Listen 2 was more refined and more moving. I’ll find time for Listen 3. Looking forward to it! For the turnstiles sounds like an Elliott Smith song!
It was ok. It gave me some summer vibes but it was mid
In 3 words: Intimate, Melancholic, Raw. It sounds like life, with all the emotions you can feel in it.
Somehow I've never listenes to a full Neil Young album. Everything on here is really good. It's full of that wholesome rough around the edges vibe he often gives me.
Haven't taken the time to listen to a full Neil Young album and this album made me realize I am missing out big time. Perfect energy for a car drive or long work day.
1. dette var lystig til Neil å være 2. Jeg liker dette veldig godt Han har noget banale tekster her. Kanskje særlig på For the Turnstiles. Men dog liker jeg det enkle blues soundet. Ambulance blues <3
Never been a big Neil Young fan but would give this another listen.
Good job Neil
Quite nice. The middle songs fell off a bit but beginning and ending tracks were good. Stand-out: See the Sky About to Rain
I really liked it! Should make an effort to listen to again.
Favorite Songs: Walk On Revolution Blues For the Turnstiles
Good blues album
best track: on the beach the last 3 tracks! 😍 I want to give this a 5 star rating, but can you already dish out a 5 for the 2nd album you listen to?
I had a moment with this. I put on that first song, and within the first few seconds, I knew that I was in love. And if I liked the way Neil sang, that would seal the deal. And I do. I think he has a wonderful voice. And so I’m in love. This simply gives me the warmest and most fuzzy feeling ever. Why are all of the best albums not on streaming? I had many moments with this album actually. For example, on See the Sky About to Rain the moment where Neil starts humming over the keyboard and steel guitar at about 3 and a half minutes in, I literally melted into my chair on the school bus. The two longest songs are the title track and Ambulance Blues, and they both give such a grey melancholic feeling. I could feel myself getting emotional listening to that last song. The album cover looks so solemn and lonely, but also peaceful, and this whole albums’ mood matches those descriptions perfectly. Rating: 8/10
This is a really lovely record. Favourite tracks: Walk On, Revolution Blues, Motion Pictures, Ambulance Blues.
Best album by Neil Young so far. Melancholic, but very simple and easy to digest. Great melodies, beautiful solos and amazing voice. Just a really solid album, which makes my opinion of Neil much more positive.
I really liked this
This album is bleak and damn good. Even the nearly-nine-minute closing track flew by.
Never mad about listening to Neil Young. For the Turnstiles is a favorite of mine.
I don’t think there’s a Neil young album out there worse than a 4 Top Tracks: 1) On The Beach 2) See The Sky About To Rain 3) Vampire Blues 4) Motion Pictures 5) Ambulance Blues
Love Neil Young. This is the best Americana by a former Canadian ever.
Great album, Neil Young is a talented but somewhat underrated songwriter
Some get strong, some get strange. Not a fan of Neil's voice, but the album as a whole was a pleasant experience.
Blind album, know the artist. Very prolific. I surprisingly enjoyed this album more than I thought and I don't know why... it's was just all around great. Soothing and well rounded. Simple songs that show a lot of emotion and feeling.
One thing I’ve found out through this stupid game is I quite like Neil Young, let’s call it a 4.
Great vibes
4/5. There isn't necessarily a bad song on this album but not sure how I feel about it. There is definitely an undertone of anger and resentment about life and America. It also has a bleak and sad air about the songs that provide the listener with a sense that this album is talking about a time long gone and a place lost to ruin. It's beautiful and sad at the same time. It's not perfect but it truly is otherworldly and a pleasure to listen to, despite the ambience.
On The Beach by Neil Young is a pretty good album, alright. It's only 8 songs, but none of them are particularly bad. Neil's a pretty decent singer. The whole album has this really well done feel where it's fairly melancholic, but not too depressing. The subject matter fits that as well, with some varied topics ranging from Neil's feelings on his career to Charles Manson. Apparently, this album is connected to some of Neil's other albums, so I may want to listen to those later. Luckily, or unluckily depending on who you ask, Neil Young has more albums on here than most other artists, so I'll eventually get to experience more of his long career. In conclusion, this album is just a solid folk rock album. I think I'll give it a strong 4/5.
Pleasant enough. Appears to be the music of a man uncertain of his place in the changing world of the 70s. The flower power petered out.
For the turnstiles, On the beach
The first few songs are fine, but it takes Revolution Blues to turn the corner for me. It is still the Neil Young slow-tempo folks-rock-blues, but it is entirely earnest and melancholy that does a good job of engaging the listener. Enjoyed.
I just really like Neil Young. My mom would always put him on when I was young and I would like what I heard, but for whatever reason I haven't put in the time to really explore his discography. 4/5
Some great, easy but not friendly blues
A pleasant listen. No songs stood out as certified bangers but I thought the music was pretty good. Listening to Neil Young makes me feel like I am appreciating true folk music, I don't know if that's warranted or not but it makes me feel slightly more cultured and I think that's interesting. Why do I feel that way? Something to reflect on.
Good rainy day album
Really liked it, never heard of the songs before. Liked Motion Pictures (for Carrie), Ambulance Blues.
How can you not like a Neil Young album? And the kind that’s only 40 minutes long. I love short albums, it makes each song feel that much more special.
I've always been put off by Neil Young's whiny voice, but maybe I'm starting to come round, because I quite enjoyed this. Revolution Blues is pretty great, but Vampire Blues is a bit of a plodder.
I’ll have to give the album another listen. I’m too used to high energy songs like EDM and Pop that have cut down on my listening attention span. I especially enjoyed “See the Sky about to Rain”. Probably my favorite song on the album. There was also a nice guitar solo I liked. I enjoyed Motion Pictures too.
Decent album the title Track had decent guitar But country isnt really my thing
Pretty good, I still like Harvest best
7.5, WAY better than the last Neill Young I got. Grabbed the lyrics on the side, his voice didn't annoy me this time. Some of the guitar plings don't agree with my ears but they add to the melancholy feeling of days past. Nice one Neill, I feel sad now about a time I'm still experiencing as a young adult.
Liked this album a lot.
I've got to say, since embarking on the 1001 albums project, I have developed something of a partiality to Neil Young. I enjoyed this, it's up there with Harvest in my opinion
You can hear the origins of grunge lurking just below the surface
A beautiful sounding album will go back and listen again and amybe learn some of the songs.
Definitely the best Yungian recording we've gotten our canals around so far. Real well constructed songs, some beautiful, surreal storytelling, it even gets pretty catchy at points. Big winner. Fave track: See the Sky About to Rain
Another Neil Young album with great atmosphere! That’s the thing which makes for his best albums, I find.
De va nice!
This further adds to my appreciation for Neil Young. Great Lyrics.
great album! Neil Young is at some of his bets when it's just him and a guitar. This was my first listen ftb.
Probably a 3.7 but I will round up.
This such a dark thematically consistent album: slow and brooding, desperate and disillusioned, Neil Young is the friend telling hippies they're pissing in the wind at the end of an era. The upbeat opener 'Walk On' is a nostalgic good-time song about yesterdays, but things get real real quick. The wavering tremelo organ on 'See the Sky About to Rain' is the ominous sound of heavy clouds and the lapsteel is the wind of a dew-point drop; they serves the song perfectly. The chaotic bass and angry guitars on 'Revolution Blues' channel the dark vibes from the up Canyon. Vampire Blues slow mesmerizing groove disolves into a deconstructed guitar solo, scratching and scribbling on the stings as the song fades out. Contrast that with the peircing clean tone through the slow reverby minor-key 'On the Beach' - where the guitar perfectly extends NY's voice - thin, faltering, fragile and introspective, but deeply expressive. 'Motion Pictures' & 'Ambulance Blues' close the album with sparse acoustic songs - the violin and harmonica interplay on AB give it an almost raga-drone feel, while the detuned guitar parts on MP make it feel like watching melting film. Favorites: Revolution Blues, See the Sky About to Rain, On the Beach
This may be my favorite Neil Young album I've listened to. I really enjoyed this. I wish it was streaming on Spotify, though.
A groovy, chill release by Young. If you're not already a fan, this might not impress you much unless you're in that specific mood. If you are a fan, this is actually want you want: more Neil Young songs of doing what he does best. Doesn't try to be flashy or loud Continues his rock blend of country, folk, and blues, but has a greater emphasis on jammy instruments, especially in tracks like "Revolution Blues" and "On the Beach." The only two hard songs are "Walk On" and "Revolution Blues" which are placed near the beginning. No bad tracks, and includes some of his best songs.
Sounds like these songs should be on the soundtrack of No Country For Old Men or Better Call Saul they just have that vibe to them.
If there’s one thing this list has done, it’s made me a bigger fan of Neil (3.5/5)
I'm a big fan of NY but had really forgotten about this one. Its top tier.
I liked! Neil Young has a pleasant voice
Revolution Blues holds up, crazy that he actually met Charles Manson? Awesome to recognize Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Graham Nash, and David Crosby's names in the liner notes. Vampire Blues is also great.
Really liked this. Chill but heartfelt and an excellent album cover. High 4 right now but could get to a 5. A shame he isn’t on Spotify.
Thundercat is an exceptional musician but not an exceptional songwriter. Some of the tracks did start to sound repetitive and could have been cut in my opinion, but it was an overall enjoyable listen. The guest selection was a lot of fun and the groove in “Them Changes” still slaps.
Heard before: some Ironically, I listened to this record on the beach this afternoon, and I immediately restarted in when it was done. When I had heard these songs in the past, they seemed overly simplistic, not much there. But I never spent time with the collection, and once I did, the whole project became much richer and more contemplative. The variety is track by track - details in the 12-bar blues, subtle instrumentation shifts, pointed angry narratives, and wild aimless stories. The trick is that each song gives you time to soak in what it brings, so somehow it feels both expansive and concise, a personal statement by someone who doesn't quite know what he wants but it isn't what he has. An excellent bummer record, perfect for sitting and staring at the ocean. Top tracks: Ambulance Blues, For The Turnstiles, Revolution Blues
This was a tough album to review for me because it means I have to restrain a heavy pro Neil Young bias. If this were Harvest I could easily give it a 5 and walk away, a 4-5 for that is indisputable. I really love the tonal shift of the album. From bright, folksy Blues to more stripped down songs that really emphasizes the blue in Blues. That being said, not all of the latter 2/3s of the album hit well for me. I appreciated the super lo fi; For the Turnstiles, but couldn’t really get into it. Really the titular track and Ambulance Blues from this portion of the album. Overall I’m gonna say; bias aside (hopefully), this is a great album. Not Neil’s most accessible but definitely does what it sets out to do very well.
Another banger from Neil. Some of the longer tracks dragged a bit, but overall I thought it was a great album. Love the pedal steel, JJ Cale vibes, cool banjo lo fi stuff. What can I say, Neil rules.
This was a very nice listen, certainly not my favorite Neil album but it’s one I haven’t heard before and quite a few songs really stuck with me on the first listen. Doing some reading this is a record that came from a pretty lonely and difficult place for him as he struggled with the onset of superstardom after his prior record, but it’s a feel that doesn’t resonate with me the same as some of his other work. Overall still a great record and enjoyable listen.
Este fue una grata sorpresa. See the Sky about to Rain es una maravilla y Motion Picture también
I like most of Neil Young’s work. This was an interesting album.
Probably the one peak-era Neil album I don’t own, and that’s mainly because I just haven’t found it for a reasonable price in the wild. It’s good though! Tight, clever songwriting as always, although he definitely has better stuff from this period. Worth looking harder for. B
-1 star from leaving Spotify like a crying baby
Not an artist I have ever listened to before nor would I have thought to, if not generated by 1001 Albums. On one listen, not bad as background music and would grow on me more I think with further listens.
i know i should dig neil young more than i do but i don’t
Nice, didn't know Neil young made songs of almost 9 minutes long but didn't bother me at all
Quite beautiful
Lovely
I'm a fan of Neil Young, but the guy has made some many albums over the years, it's hard to keep track. I'd never heard this album before, although the opening track "Walk On" seemed familiar. I liked it.
I have always liked and really respected Neil Young while at the same really not liking his voice. Those things are not mutually exclusive. Because of that I have not really explored a ton of his music in depth, and this record is really the only exception. I think it's a phenomenal record. And a really great one to get just a week before seeing Neil perform live.
Should have been called On The Beach Blues
I couldn’t have imagined myself being able to listen to a full Neil Young album without covering my ears until this project. This wasn’t bad at all.
I have not always loved Neil Young’s voice, so I wondered how this would go down. It was better than expected more often than not… and sometimes really lovely. Parts of it still dragged a little but worth hearing again.
Wow. I'm a huge Neil fan, and I've never heard this record. It's definitely got a very strong country influence, and I could see that being off putting to some folks. Not a single track on this album is something that Neil plays anymore, which is interesting. I suspect this record would grow on me if I listened to it more, and reading about how it was essentially a "lost" album i.e. was out of print for a long time explains to me why I hadn't heard it until now. Interesting!
Kan niet alle nummers luisteren
Very good album. Has some great songs and some that are good.3.5/4 Highlights: Revolution Blues, On the Beach
Euhm Spotify waarom niet eigenlijk???
Not listened to this one before. Really enjoyed it
Now I get Neil Young. Great songwriting.
Cover Art is brilliant. First track Walk On is a really fun track with a real funky guitar riff. Closer is great too. Good album, great vibes
I’ve been through a few NY/CH albums and this is one of my faves. Worthwhile entry to the 1001
This was nice. Look into this album more if Neil Young ever returns to Spotify. I think On The Beach was my favorite, but that might have just been the song that was on when I was paying the most attention
why Neil Young's songs aren't on spoti and i can't add this songs to my playlist?
This is a really strong album start to finish. It's sad and mostly slow folk/rock music, but still manages to be unique and interesting. The only thing holding it back for me is a lack of standout great songs. Lots of really good songs though and I'm excited to listen to more of his music. (Note: Neil Young removed all of his music from Spotify, so have to listen to this on Youtube). Favorite song: For the Turnstiles Others: Walk On, See the Sky About To Rain, On the Beach, Motion Pictures (for Carrie), Ambulance Blues
On The Beach surprised me. I think Ambulance Blues is my new favourite Neil Young track! There was a lot of 'heart on his sleeve' stuff in this record, the musicianship was a bit on the sloppy side but in a real and expressive way. I think this is a really good record and a bit of a sleeper. I know a bit of Neil Young's catalog but had literally never heard of this album or any of the songs on it.
yay, another offering from Neil Young. that said, this is comfortably the best one we've had. I'd actually go as far as to say i enjoyed it.
My first Neil Young album. I liked it but I was not “wowed” by it? I’m reading that this is his melancholy album, so I want to check out the lyrics or re-listen on a gloomy day :)
The follow-up to Harvest is a brooding meditation on alienation, anger, and despair. The album cover seems to indicate that there is something unsettled in Neil Young at this time. The music itself is fantastic folk rock that really takes its time to build a mood and story. I need to listen to this album again before I really give it my rating, but after an initial listen, I’ll give it a four.
Second Neil Young album on my list, much preferred that to Harvest. It's a shame it's not on Spotify as I'll never listen to it again if so, can't even give it a second/third listen to pick up which were my favourite tracks as I've had enough with an ad-riddled YouTube sesh. Enjoyable though, first half was better I think, 3.5*
Either this project is breaking me down with the excessive amount of Neil Young, or I actually liked this one. At the very least, this is probably the Neil Young album I have liked most out of what I have received thus far (this is the fourth). This album had some folk aspects, but definitely seemed to implement a lot more psychedelic and rock aspects than I remember hearing from previous albums of his. Either way, the folk rock presence on this album was somehow less grating. Another thing that resonated with me from this album was the darker vibe of the music, obviously a result of this being part of Neil's "Ditch Trilogy". Again, this album somehow resonated more than the other Neil Young entry on this project from the "Ditch Trilogy". I liked "Walk On" enough to want to listen to it multiple times. And for some reason, "Vampire Blues" really stuck with me as well. For me, any level of sticking hasn't happened with Young since "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere". Again, I can't quite put a finger on it, but I liked this Neil Young album more than the others I have heard so far. Leave it to me to me drawn not only to a darker album on the "Ditch Trilogy", but also the album from Young's discography with notoriety for being a lost album and cult favorite. In any case, on a project that is going to force me to listen to a LOT of Neil Young, I'll consider liking this album at all to be a win.
Not in in your face great album but definitely one that you could sit with for a while and it would grow on you. Starts off with a jam and I was thinking it would be a pretty lively album but it moved into a somber and desolate album about isolation due to the fake fulfillment of fame and loss of youth. Revolution blues is a really interesting one and almost feels like he’s siding with manson’s viewpoint due to his hatred of Hollywood’s general bullshit and lack of substance. I also love the last two songs touching on some of his own personal loneliness with the imagery of sitting in front of your tv with nothing good to do and the recounting of his old 60s folk scene days in ambulance blues. Motion pictures has so many good lines and sums up the vibe of the album really well: having everything you think people would dream of like fame, fortune, and a fancy tv but all you feel is isolated. 👍:motion pictures, ambulance blues, walk on Also, I saw Tim’s guess for my guess already but he would’ve been right I was gonna go around 8-10 range.
A somber and folky singer:songwriter album. If you didn’t know already, that’s about as right up my alley as it gets. I liked it when I listened to it this morning but I knew it was one of those albums that was more suited for night listening. As expected, it hit different layer on. I don’t really know much about the public opinion of Neil young but I would assume his unique voice can be somewhat polarizing. I personally, am a big fan. Also pretty cool backstory with this one: for a long time it was pretty much was an album of legend because it didn’t sell well and wasn’t re-released. So, for the most part, it was one that people only heard about. Only an exclusive few were able to listen to let alone own. Eventually was remastered in 2003 and, 30 years after release, able to be heard by the masses for the first time. Obviously now it’s pretty acclaimed and the rest is history. Super laid back and mellow listen. This album obviously has a pretty depressing tone. That can make an album pretty hit or miss though, the ones that do it well are able to portray it without having to say “Look at me, I’m sad”. I think Neil young does a great job of that here. Many of the songs were clearly shaped by the political and social climate at the time, and given that its neil young, no surprise there. Revolution blues is all about Charles Manson which was kinda cool, also has a great baseline. Very cohesive and consistent. Back half was a bit stronger for me and contained my favorite tracks. Overall it’s not my favorite Neil Young, but it was a very enjoyable listen for me. This could definitely move up to a 5 for me with more listens but that won’t be happening due to the accessibility issues. So dumb. Best: motion pictures, ambulance blues, for the turnstiles MMM: 🎶Ooh baby, that's hard to change. I can't tell them how to feel Some get stoned, some get strange Sooner or later, it all gets real Walk on, walk on Walk on, walk on🎶 PS: I know I’m not the resident album cover guy but this one is dope 10/10. Guess for peders rating: 10/10 Guess for Tom’s guess of peders rating: 9/10
Perfect starter. If all songs can be so nice. It will be 5. Can be leastened sometimes.
The light at the end of the tunnel after the long hangover of the sixties left friends and loved ones dead from drugs and drinking, this is Neil at his most optimistic. But that doesn’t mean it’s without a touch of darkness and doubt, creaky guitars and anti-solos sowing seeds of discord. By the end it’s as it should be: just him and a guitar, walking on.
Hey Jim, if you want Neil Old back on Spotify maybe you should stop supporting Joe Rogan spreading misinformation!
I really loved this one. Very mellow and an easy listen.
Very enjoyable album overall, but no killer songs that give Harvest and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere their fifth star.
Didn't expect to like it
It's fine. I like Neil Young, but not nearly as much as whoever put this list together. I guess it's a 4? It's pretty good but doesn't feel like some all timer
4.5 stars. Incredible. Much more to Neil Young than meets the eye.
J'ai bien aimé le côté un peu plus rock de cet album de Neil Young, je m'y trouve à l'aise comme dans une chambre douillette
Argh. Same as Harvest. Unavailable.
Heard lots of his albums but not this one. If others are a guide this will be great.
Great listen, would definitely return to the album in the future. 4/10
I really liked Vampire Blues!! I liked the album a ton! Would listen to again:) thanks Neil Young!
Nice, chill music. Bass gives those songs really good vibe.
I started this whole 1001 albums thing with Nick Drake who I've never heard of before. At least I've heard of Neil Young but this is kinda similar singer-songwriter folk rock stuff at first. Definitely better though, it quickly turns more bluesy and just generally exciting. Except for the 9 minutes long closing track. That was totally uncalled for. Okay, just kidding, it wasn't bad just too long for my taste. Songs I Already Knew: None Songs I Really Liked: Walk On, See the Sky About to Rain, Revolution Blues, On the Beach
not my favourite neil young album but still a great listen regardless, title track is probably my favourite
Neil Young's "On the Beach" is a masterpiece that defies easy categorization. Released in 1974, it's an album that showcases Young's willingness to experiment and push boundaries while still staying true to his roots. From the haunting opener "Walk On" to the melancholic closer "Ambulance Blues," the album is a journey through Young's unique musical landscape. The standout track "Revolution Blues" is a searing commentary on the political climate of the time, while "Vampire Blues" is a dark and brooding meditation on the excesses of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. But it's not just the lyrics that make "On the Beach" so special. The music itself is a blend of genres, incorporating elements of folk, country, and even jazz. Young's guitar work is at its best here, with each note ringing out with emotion and power. Overall, "On the Beach" is an album that rewards careful listening and reveals new depths with each play. It's a must-listen for any serious music fan and a testament to Neil Young's enduring talent as a songwriter and musician.
The album was nice but nothing really blew me away. Good easy listening. Four stars.
Lyrically really good but not musically inspiring. Great story telling in vampire blues. No bad songs and definitely re listenable.
Nice album, love Revolution Blues especially.
Wasn’t expecting something quite so melancholy but still very much enjoyed and continue to hear the influence on generations of americana singer songwriters
Pretty darn good.
I normally don’t like Neil Young but this album is pretty good, I actually enjoyed Vampire Blues enough to add to my music
gotta spend more time with Uncle Neil, he's great
Folksy. Would want to revisit again after learning guitar
Not my genre but liked a fair bit of it, best song revolution blues
Enjoyable all around good album
I think this was great, I would like to listen to this on a long drive at sunset
The follow-up album to the wildly successful “Harvest”, Neil Young clearly presents himself here as an alienated individual who didn’t know what to do with himself atop the pedestal
As far as Neil Young goes, this is good, consistent Neil. Every song on here is pretty good. Even the songs I didn't necessarily love were pretty good (I'm currently listening to 'For the Turnstiles'). I really enjoy ‘See the Sky About to Rain’ and ‘Vampire Blues’. They give a taste of a side of Neil that an album like Harvest does not. ‘On the Beach’ sounds exactly as the title says, with the narrator sharing his reflections with the sand and waves, before jumping to ‘Motion Picture’, taking me into some small, dark club for a live performance confessional. There is a lot of rock n’ roll on here to be enjoyed. With that, I can't say I find any of these songs extraordinary. If I were to make my own hypothetical top 20 favorite Neil Young songs, I don’t know if I would put any of these on there. This is the kind of album I would throw on at a dinner party or at the beach with friends (honestly just using as an example. I thought picnic after the fact). When you’re not paying attention to the lyrics, I think the average listener would enjoy the sound. It doesn’t have any automatic skips on it in the way that Harvest has two in my opinion. On the flip side, Harvest does not lack for hits. Based on this album being featured on the list, I’m putting together mental notes on what I think is some great Neil to come.
Since most people use Spotify for this chart you have to be dedicated and turn to Youtube. It really was pretty mellow, low-key and offbeat in a 'NeilYoungsian' kinda way. Nice to chill to. Echoes of country, 70s organ and rock. Sad to say it deserves so much more recognition but it won't get it.
Love
Really great album and a sort of emotional comedown from "Harvest." This record gets overshadowed a bit by Young's other work, but "See the Sky about to Rain" and "Walk On" are classics. I think this is an album you must hear, as it is a partner album in some ways to "Harvest."
This is lovely. The subtle country blues guitar behind Neil's playing is so tasteful, and the parts on this album where Neil's voice is exposed are magic. There's a lazy, Californian lilt to the whole album that draws you in. Motion Pictures is special
Again.. not on Spotify. Decided to listen on YT. Good album. So chill.
Dark, brooding and, at times, haunted. One loves the weighty-seeming introspection, like a cold grey day on the beach. There's a resigned acceptance to the tone that sounds like it was freeing in some songs and quite edgy on others. This sense of culmination, and of the need to move on, paid off very nicely for the listener. 4
Very good. Considering getting it on vinyl.
This was really great 4/5
Amazing album, one of his best. particularly like Ambulance Blues and Motion Pictures
Caught perfectly between perky defiance and world-weary fatigue, "On the Beach" is a considerable level above "Tonight's the Night", the album Neil Young recorded beforehand and released afterward (and also the one I had generated for me just a couple of weeks ago). Recorded in the wake of "Harvest"'s success by a rapidly disillusioned and alienated Young, "On the Beach" is overcast with a growing wistfulness, which fills the second side's final three tracks as Young holds onto hope by a thread. The emotional crux might not be as strong as "Tonight's the Night", but the material Young draws from it feels stronger, more refined and focused. The opener "Walk On" is a strange outlier: one of the most misleading opening tracks I've ever heard. A buoyant guitar line, full-bodied arrangement with lyrics that at first glance seem optimistic and carefree. "Some get stoned, some get strange, sooner or later it all gets real; walk on." I came to view this as a little more nihilistic in the context of the album: everything's falling apart, nothing's what it was, but don't turn around to watch the memories burn. Later, the beach becomes overcast in "See the Sky About to Rain", boasting a slide guitar solo which fits perfectly alongside the electric piano and fragile vocal. The atmosphere at the end, featuring Young's wordless vocal line, is blissful, bittersweet melancholia. "Revolution Blues" is perfectly placed, upping the ante with some serious edge: jagged guitar solos, an "anything-goes" performance drenched in reverb and crunchy distortion. The confession at the end- "I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars, but I hate them worse than lepers and I'll kill them in their cars"- is a bit of a shock, but it's also one of the most badass statements to come out of music pre gangsta-rap. If there are any songs resembling throwaways here to drag the score down, it's "For the Turnstiles" and "Vampire Blues". The former is some out-of-the-box country-style jamming with a casual, unfussy banjo accompaniment and sounds a bit like a outtake, while the latter is a tired 12-bar blues with a baffling one-note guitar solo. Completing a triptych of "Blues" named songs alongside "Revolution" and "Vampire" is "Ambulance". Almost every song on "On the Beach" is a winner, but this final track would probably win the accolade of my all-time favourite by Young (across the four albums I've heard- admittedly a fraction of his discography). It brings a satisfying level of acoustic folk from Young's previous albums, with a melodic guitar accompaniment I could listen to forever. (Incidentally, I found out Young ripped this from Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death", which I was given recently on the generator… canonised music is a small world.) It's a gorgeous song, overflowing with yearning, nostalgia, and lyrical gems like the below: "An ambulance can only go so fast; it's easy to get buried in the past; when you try to make a good thing last…" Incredible stuff.
Marvellous.
Neil is always good for a good album. This one though is just good, it doesn't provide enough to warrant a 5 star rating
I think this is the third Neil Young album that I've gotten. I admire his talents as a singer/songwriter even if I'm not a particular fan of the sound of his voice. A legend!
I liked this more than many of Neil Young’s classic rock warbles and a whole lot more than any of his Crazy Horse work. A touch of youth angst looks good on him.
little slow, but the kinda album that would grow on me with time. Admittedly better than Harvest Moon, which has been my favorite Young project to date. First song is a slapper. Annoyed I can't add any of these on Spotify ugh
solid Neil Young album. don't get to enjoy it as much anymore since he took them all off spotify! thanks neil!
Never heard this album, it was a really good one with some classic Neil hallmarks.
I did say I needed to listen to more Neil Young after getting another of his albums a few days ago. Again this is a beautiful album. More of the same but different enough to warm my interest. I feel like I should be laying back and relaxing as these stories unfolded
Track 1: Walk On Track 2: See the Sky About To Rain Track 3: Revolution Blues Track 4: For the Turnstiles Track 5: Vampire Blues Track 6: On the Beach Track 7: Motion Picture (For Carrie) *Track 8: Ambulance Blues
So so good. I love the on-the-edge, could-fall-apart-at-any-minute vibe of this era of his music
Very solemn and awesome album.
I consider myself a Neil Young fan. Maybe not a hardcore fan who knows everything about him and his catalog, but I own a handful of his albums on vinyl (probably 4 or 5) and have always appreciated Neil and his different musical styles. So to learn about an album recorded in his early prime that I don't recall ever seeing before or hearing any of the songs before kind of blew me away. Seriously, the album cover doesn't look familiar and I don't think I've heard any of the songs on this album before, but it's classic Neil. What the hell? Anyway, after listening to it once I think it's a great album. I need to listen to it more. Thanks to Neil shunning Spotify I guess I need to buy this album on vinyl also. We'll see how it evolves over time for me, but for now I'm going with 4 stars.
Long-deleted Neil album from the mid-70s finds him in a pretty low mood, living on the beach, thinking about leaving town and generally beset by vampires of all descriptions. It's not an altogether easy listen. However, the last three songs are top-grade shakey and well worth the four stars.
Was prima!
Chillax album lekker rustig
Really awesome album, I had an amazing time listening to it, from the voices to the riffs, harmonica and overall country-rock-summer-beach vibe! WOuld listen to it for sure, sad that it's not on spotify Switzerland tho 4.25/5
Good Neil stuff
neil young - on the beach notes - written in the aftermath of his album harvest being a massive hit - the lyrics across this album are about isolation, the pressure of fame, and the reality of your dreams being nothing like what you imagined they would be - neil young is not on spotify so this won’t be on the playlist fav song - motion pictures - really stripped back song where neil young sounds so defeated and honest least fav - vampire blues - if it was spookier or had more going on lyrically it would have been more effective 4.5/5
Good Neil
Nae bad
可惜我的Spotify并不能听这张专辑。
Sin ser mi estilo bien, un 4 porque no me lo esperaba
Heavily blues based, which is great. I could have done without some of the country touches, but I know most love that. Solid album all the way around
sounds like old americana
Niet op spotify
Pretty good. 4/5. Surprised I hadn't heard most of these songs before.
There is just something about that weedy, folksy voice 😊
Really like Neil Young. This is an album I hadn't listen to much in the past but felt it was great. 4.5/5
man - didn't realize how great Neil Young is
7/29/2022 - ALBUM #183 Today's Album: "On The Beach" by Neil Young - Since the only other Neil Young album I have gotten on the generator was a live album that I didn’t care too much for, I was excited to see what his studio material sounded like since I hear so much praise thrown his way. This album justifies that praise by way of soulful folk vocals, warm production, and a strong songwriting tact from young. The album opens up well with the upbeat rock track Walk On and continues strong with the slower track See the Sky About to Rain. The rockier songs on this album are quite enjoyable, but the delicate sound of the keys and strings paired with Young’s soft, youthful vocals makes for great balladry throughout this album. Neil Young is known for this kind of folky balladry that lifts the dark tones of the lyrics with the levity of the instrumentals, but it was also great to find that he was exploring other, beach-inspired, sounds on this project. The track Revolution Blues follows much of the singer-songwriter conventions that Bob Dylan pioneered in the prior decade, but Young feels like he has a deep respect for this sound and does well to add in a fair bit of 70s rock flair to update it. I think the track For the Turnstiles feels a bit weak in it’s execution, with pretty hollow sounding vocals from Young. Maybe it’s that I feel like it could have sounded much better with more vocal harmonies or that I wanted it to sound more like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, it just feels like a fairly uninteresting detour. I think Vampire Blues also doesn’t doo much to pick things up from there. There is some interesting guitar work going on, but the overall progression doesn’t really impress me. Things pick back up a fair bit with On the Beach, where a groove not unalike I Want You (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles fill out the verses and a rather lovely melody line fills out the chorus lines. The album ends with the track Ambulance Blues, which I think is a fine way to close things off with some sweet sounding strings and low brass instrumentation. Throughout this album, there are some really nice moments that show me the beauty of Neil Young’s musicianship and I think Walk On stands as a great standalone track, but I think there is something missing in it for me. His lyricism is pretty decent, but it doesn’t top the greats of the decade prior and I think there isn’t enough in this record sonically to distinguish itself from the piles of folk rock greats that were performing better music before, during, and after his career. Overall, I am a bitter Neil Young hater that thinks that his sound isn’t super impressive, but this album is a really solid statement from him as an artist. Even if I was only sometimes really blown away wih this album, there were never moments that I flat out disliked and the whole time and I have to compliment the sturdiness and cohesion of this crop of tracks. Give this one a listen if you want to hear Neil Young’s expert level songwriting 5 years into his solo career, with all of the fatigue and wisdom that comes with that. Highlights: Walk On, See the Sky About to Rain, Revolution Blues, On the Beach, Ambulance Blues Score: 7/10 An example of what Neil Young is capable as a solo artist; Hopefully not the very best he has to offer
I love this album 4
Enjoyed it but it was kind of a bummer. Needed some cheering afterward.
I like Neil Young, most of the time. I wasn't expecting much from this album but I was pleasantly surprised. Great songs, great sound, definitely deserves a spot on this list.
4.5
Great album. Enjoyed
After the release of his autumn album Harvest in 1972, it makes sense that he would follow it up with his....summer album. Okay, admittedly this isn't a summer album, it just looks like one with the beach and all. This is just more really good stuff from Neil Young. He's an all-timer songwriter, what more could you want? I actually prefer this one way more compared to Harvest, partially because there are no duds on this album. Obvious standout is the slow-yet-impactful title track that kicks off side B.
I love this album already. Listened to it a lot in NZ. I loved "For the Turnstiles" on this listening.
Neil Young's probably over-represented on this list (I suspect we're not nearly done with his albums yet) but there's good stuff on all of them, and this might be my favourite so far, surprisingly. I wasn't expecting much but I didn't dislike any track and some really appealed to me. Revolution Blues is a great, propulsive rocker and the title track is exquisitely despondent. A solid, cohesively world-weary collection. 3.5
Garantía de calidad Muy buen disco
27th May 2022 Neil Young’s decision to move off Spotify meant another YouTube listen. Listened while sorting stuff for the move over the weekend then went to see Nathaniel with Sav, Ben etc. Genuinely sounds like being on a beach - chilled, hazy and warm.

I like this era of Neil's albums. The lack of polish on this album and Tonight's the Night works so well with the somber lyrics. I never knew the three post Harvest albums were called the "ditch trilogy". Great term. I know this album quote well especially given I never owned it. The sides are different but both are very good. I always liked Ambulance Blues - probably since I was a juvenile delinquent when I started listening to it so the words "You're all just pissing in the wind" worked for me. I also like Motion Pictures which is dedicated to Carrie Snodgress who is also the likely subject matter of my favourite Neil song (and album) - being Harvest.
This album is a departure from Harvest and it again shows the genius of Neil Young. Throughout his long career he’s often diverged from the path and explored a new theme with a different style of music, but he always pulls it off spectacularly. This album keeps it relatively simple but the songs hit, and some hit hard! Not only is he a Canadian legend, but he’s one of the all time greats.
Haunting and austere. The playing seems extra clean and there’s a tired, take-it-or-leave-it feel to the vocals. Classic, yet underrated. 4
Up there with Heart of Gold. Definitely worth revisiting.
Very into this. Loved the characters in the songs. Great guitar solos. This is my jam.
Some Neil Young I hadn't heard before but really enjoyed. Quiet, pensive, sparing, and seemed to flip between moderate anger and mild joy.
I always thought I felt pretty middling about Neil Young. Something about his voice and his songs just never really clicked for me. That being said, this album really blew me away. Maybe his lyrics just hit me in the right way for once; I'm still trying to process it really. What I do know for sure is that this is an album I could listen to again and again. Hard to pick a standout song because I like them all, but I really enjoyed 'Vampire Blues' as well as 'Walk On.' The minimalistic, toned down instrumentals are an interesting choice, but I think they really do a service to the album. A great first half that's bolstered by a strong second half.
