Reviews (page 6 of 8)

it was alright. i like massive attack and they have some other really good songs but this wasnt all that crazy

Massive Attack is one moody band and I love it. This whole album breathes a moody laid back atmosphere. This would be a 4 star if if it weren't for that I was not a fan of some of the vocal deliveries (e.g Karmacoma) and the final live track ruined what would otherwise be a great final track in "Heat Miser". I'm impressed by how modern this sounds though it was released nearly 30 years ago. Will definitely listen to this more times.

This started super strong, the first two tracks are classics. It was a bit ho hum after that.

A very chilled and atmospheric collection of songs. Not entirely in my wheelhouse but I can see situations where I might call on this again.

Very chilled out triphop. Inoffensive and easy listening. Perfectly for getting things done

Heady, moody, generally good but goes off the boil in places. Satisfying otherwise and worth a second go.

Beetje saai

Good to listen to. It would be a background album.

This was very okay, there just not any real stand outs. Get the feeling this album committed to being cool and that's where the intrigue ends. It's like going to a club filled with everyone dressed the exact same way, they all look decent but there's not all that much beneath the surface.

Probably not as good as their other albums but some very varied and interesting sounds. Sounds more modern than the 90s What are the chances of us hearing another Light My Fire cover, after hearing that bald indian fella on the see-tar. Call me as mad as a drainpipe but I think I preferred Shankar's rendition

Feel like I’m on drugs. Or should be. 3.5/5

Super chill, melodic and perfect for easy listening or as background music for an office. Massive Attack is incredibly accessible to nearly any listener, which is sort of their appeal and this album is no exception to that. Beats and melodies are consistent, plenty of resolve in each song, and overall nothing stands out by itself, the experience is pretty complete. Therein sort of lies the mediocre rating, where the biggest advantage that Massive Attack has is also where it does not earn higher a rating, it is so even-keeled and accessible that it gets caught in that grey area of respect and indifference.

Yeah, Massive Attack are kind of a cooler idea than they are to listen to. Maybe I’m just not smoking as much these days but it’s all a little boring to me now.

ok. not my style

Buen disco con ritmo y estilo. Canciones mezcla de pop y dance. Buena voz igualmente.

Good album with chill sound

Weird at times but I kinda dug it.

I did not have acid to drop so this was not as interesting.

This felt like it should have been a companion soundtrack to a movie. Varied and interesting but nothing hooked me.

There are some classics on here but tbh a couple of stinkers

first tracks pretty cool, rest sortof monotonous

Yay! If only i wasn't at work and I could smoke some reefer while I listen to this. I'm more of a Mezzanine girl. It's the one that came out in college. This is great though. I was just getting deeper into music in 1994. Hick from the sticks. This wasn't on my radar. No guitars. Twas my loss

Its the kind of album you have to be in the mood to listen to.

Slow maybe I'll start to enjoy after a few listens.

I don’t listen to trip hop much, it’s not bad but most of the album faded into the background until Heat Miser which grabbed my attention.

I continue to dislike electronica. I will say I liked this more than Mezzanine even though everybody says that’s somehow a perfect album

I like the ideas and to a certain extent the execution as well, but I think the songs often go for a bit to long, which makes it so that I'd rather listen to other trip hop albums (including their own Mezzanine). That first track is really damn good tho.

Meh. Wanted to like this so much more than I did. Good for background music, but I didn't feel much went into the mix, not very original.

I really enjoyed some of the songs (especially with Tracey Thorn), but the rest were fine. I don't think I'll remember any of them

Love the sound and vibe of Massive Attack, this one was a little underwhelming for me.

I can see how this isn't for everyone, but I like Massive Attack. Although, I was really only familiar with the album Mezzanine before listening to Protection today. Very relaxing, full sounds. Some of the vocals were not my preferred style but that's just nitpicking.

I never know what to think of Massive Attack. I like them, I might love them. I've never heard this album, but the first song has me already. Tracey Thorn has an incredible voice. They really seem to excel with female vocalists.

No reason for this to be on the list when Blue Lines is also on it. I guess it’s fine.

Like other examples by this group from this band, I liked this well enough but it didn't really wow me. I think it could often use a rawer edge on one hand, and on the other the occasional lighter side, lyrically.

Good but blended into the background a bit

I could basically copy/paste my review of the first Massive Attack album I heard during this project. Still pleasantly surprised, but not overly impressed.

Where 1995 is now widely acknowledged as the year of the Battle of Britpop, surely 1994 should be known as the Battle of Bristol. Established trip-hop ensemble Massive Attack release their sophomore effort just one month after Portishead slink onto the scene with the dark atmospherics of “Dummy”. Only there’s no beef, no scraps, no arrogance: just blissed-out vibes all round. Both acts were coy about being labelled “trip-hop” and eschewed the term in their own ways, whether by expanding their sound or broadening their pool of collaborators. In “Protection”, Massive Attack embark on a direct continuation of “Blue Lines”, turning even further inward: this album is moodier, mellower, and lacks their debut’s sense of scope, adventure or ending catharsis. It’s a well-made album, but gets a little samey by the end. First things first, it sounds absolutely gorgeous: healthy and distinct low-end, crisp hi-hat, ripples of piano or keyboard flowing over the top, occasional stabs of guitar or synth chord. It’s a very spacious mix, with each layer given chance to shine. I can only imagine how great it would sound with the bass rumbling through a club sound-system, opening a black hole in the middle of the room. “Protection”, “Three”, “Euro Child” and especially “Karmacoma” are all standouts. “Sly” also deserves praise for its stirring string arrangements, which add another dimension. On the other hand, “Weather Storm” is pleasantly atmospheric, but tends towards wallpaper music. “Better Things” and “Heat Miser” are similarly underwhelming: intriguing and evocative, but downtempo enough to stop one’s pulse. Finally, the live version of “Light my Fire” is a bit of an odd inclusion for the ending, tearing apart the silky cocoon the band have spent the last forty five minutes wrapping its listeners in. Perhaps it could have worked with a studio recording, but to me it felt jarring and anti-climactic as a finale. While having a roster of rotating vocalists on a conveyor belt risks a lack of cohesion, I feel it serves the album well and gives a nice flavour of variety which could otherwise be entirely absent. Tricky has the album’s standout songs, his subdued and hushed delivery serving the production perfectly. Tracey Thorn also gives a strong performance in “Protection”, and Nicolette does a great job with “Three”. These songs live outside the spotlights, hiding in the shadows. They demand to be sought out, to lead listeners away from the path. This is good if one is in the appropriate mood, but otherwise “Protection” exists as a subliminal other world. The first couple of times I listened to the album, I was aware it was playing but most of it passed by without note or incident. When I listened again in a mellower mood, it was more effective and I found myself getting lost in the album much more. I don’t know if I’ll ever become fully immersed in this one, but I know that if I do it will be glorious.

I liked like 75% of the sound of every song. Respect tho

Trip-Hop beginnings. I loved it. Tracey Thorne is amazing for the first track.

it was good but nothing i’d seek out listening

There is some kind of suspense in the music. That's a good thing. But there is no climax. That's bad. It's great background music. It's too slow for dancing. The songs are long and there's not enough variation to keep my attention 5+ minutes per song. Favorite song: Heat Misser.

Joku aina Massive attackissa viehättää, vaikka periaatteessa on tylsää. Sitä estää koko ajan jännä/pelottava tunnelma. Ja tehty sulavaksi kokonaisuudeksi.

Decent but I don’t think this should be Massive Attack’s representation on the list. They have better records

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Heat Miser (9) 2 - Euro Child (7) 3 - Spying Glass (5)

First off I’d like to put on record that I’m quite a big Massive Attack fan. Heligoland (massively underrated) and Mezzanine (rightfully revered) are both superior albums, but I think I’m right in believing *neither* are on the list..?? By contrast, I found this one a bit disappointing. It veers a bit too much towards background lounge music for me, with less emphasis on those dark, mysterious or abrasive sounds that I enjoy in other MA albums. 2.5 stars, but I’ll round up because there are still a handful of redeeming tracks on here.

very mellow, stoner music at its finest. i enjoyed it, but tbh i think it fails in the way a lot of mellow stuff fails — you have to be high to listen to it. it’s a strange album to try and rate, but i’ll do my best.

It's not bad at all -- in fact, musically it's very good, it's just not my style.

Well recorded beats, good background music for getting things done.

Smooth electronica. Cool electronica. Not groundbreaking electronica. It was enjoyable to listen to, but I don't see myself ever coming back to it. At least it wasn't grating to the ears like some music in this genre can be.

This album told me I'd look cooler with an eyebrow piercing

pretty okay, not like stellar or anything, good homework music. kinda cheesy dont know how to explain, relisten : nice yeah would listen again

Hämärää ja tunnelmallista RnB (?) taustamusiikkia

I held off listening to this because I thought it was going to be some kind of thrash metal based on the name of the band. Was very pleasantly surprised it was a collection of sweet grooves and vocal performances in the electronica area. Very cool album.

2nd Listen: First 2 tracks absolutely not my thing. 3 & 4 are good but kinda forgettable. Spyglass is the first one to really get my attention, Horace Andy rules. The record’s middle is enjoyable, the female vocalist is a nice compliment to the instrumental arrangements. I absolutely cannot get behind Tricky’s vocals on this effort. All-in-all not a bucket list album. Enjoyed most of the cuts.

Follow up to Blue Lines by MA doesn’t quite hit those heights but a few classic tracks here and the band would go on to redefine their sound even further.

Chill vibes.

Disjointed is a word that I use a lot in these notes. There are some very melodic songs, and then some where it seems like everything, including the kitchen sink, were just kind of thrown in. No clue how they would even repeat some of these songs in a concert.

I really enjoy the style/mood from Massive Attack, though I didn't find anything that had a real hook or was particularly catchy... just a cool vibe. Props.

Not something I'm likely to throw on on a whim, but not bad if I'm in the mood for it.

Nice to listen to something different from Massive Attack than Blue Lines or Mezzanine, though feel its similar in feel to the former. Protection is not as memorable nor has the same high points as both, but as a whole it's consistently good and has a nice feel to it. The title track is the key highlight here. Tracy Thorn's presence was a nice delight too.

This has a very relaxed café del mar kind of vibe. Perfect in pool bars or in the background at dinner parties whilst you’re passing the potatoes. To qualify I don’t do dinner parties so I don’t have this around as a go-to. Neither Teardrop nor Unfinished Sympathy are on this album. Therefore it’s never going to be the best Massive Attack album for me. It would be a solid 3.5.

banco. 7/10

Some interesting points, but meh.

Didn't like this as much as I do Mezzanine.

Trippy

As a trained puppeteer, I can honestly say that Massive Attack had no impact on me whatsoever. I find it really hard to believe that Massive Attack would even have the gall to claim that they've influenced every movement ive ever made with a puppet. They haven't. They're lying to everyone. My puppetry is NOTHING to do with Massive Attack. NEVER WILL BE.

Hit or miss for me. First song started off real strong. Karmacoma seemed weird and boring. Three was okay. Spyglass was enjoyable.

I’ve now had both of the massive attack albums that are on here and while I don’t know much about them I was sure that mezzanine would be the obvious choice for the book but hey we got this! It’s not bad every song sounds unique but (excluding the first song) it all feels quite forgettable when the album is done. Maybe the other notable moment is the doors cover (light my fire) at the end mostly because the doors are one of the last groups that I would’ve expected them to cover. The cover is a little strange with all of the turntables and hip hop drums but it’s still a good enough track. I gave blue lines a 4/5 if I remember correctly this is a small step down so I’ll give it a 3/5.

3/5. Nice sound.

As a rock fan, this is the album why I'm here. Experience good music from other genres. Protection is a great background music for... anything? I have listened it for work. I liked it.

A follow-up to their 1991 debut album Blue Lines, Massive Attack makes a statement right from the cover of Protection. It shows "Flammable Gas" warning sign from the Blue Lines cover, now ripped apart to reveal the metal it contained within. Protection is about being more vulnerable while still keeping you guard up. Massive Attack is not going to let the quality slip just because they're getting slow and morose. Much like their debut, Massive Attack continues to build on the atmospheric genre of trip hop, which is still gaining popularity in the UK. There is also a dip into the genre of dub, which clearly demonstrates Jamaican reggae roots. This gives the album so well-needed variation as many of the songs stand in the shadow of Protection's self-titled opener. Tracey Thorn provides beautiful vocals to an excellent track that compliments her range perfectly. The rest feels like it's trying to play catchup, never fully landing the same way that Protection did. This is doubly true for the album closer Light My Fire, a lackluster live cover of the Doors song that wraps up Protection with a pathetic wimper. There is still a consistent level of quality being held with Protection. I don't think it's better or worse than their debut album, just different. Some choices certainly hinder the overall product though.

I know the band, but not the album. It's definitely something, quite unpredictable. This album was released ten years before Garageband, so I can only assume that the developers of Garageband created the app to allow everyday joes to recreate the instrumental to "Heat Miser" at home. I'll check to confirm, but I'm about 98% certain that the title track sampled the guitar from James Brown's "The Payback," that's a nice touch. Anyway, this was a pretty decent album. The highs are quite high, and this kind of music works great for me in doses, but at album's length it loses a little luster for me. Favorite tracks: Protection, Three, Heat Miser. Album art: Trying to decipher what this is, seems like a box with metallic interior splayed open, with a little cardboard hazard symbol, except the hazard is a little hungry boy. A little dull as far as color's concerned, but I do like this one. 3/5

Ok love the debut. And Mezzanine is a masterpiece. This one is a bit wet. The long opening title track is excellent but it never returns to those heights. 3.

Excellent album. Loved the vocals with Tricky and whoever that is that was in Everything But the Girl. I could listen to this one quite often.

Trip hop is a weird genre that spans a pretty wide range of styles. I can’t really describe how many things feel different but still generally fit regardless. My favorite trip hop by far is Portishead’s “Dummy,” and I unfairly compare everything else to that. But in such a diverse genre, surely others have different tastes. Massive Attack shows that diversity in microcosm on “Protection,” and the result is some stuff I really dig and some stuff I don’t. I don’t like Tricky on “Karmacoma,” but I do like his vocals on “Eurochild.” I don’t really love Tracy Thorn’s vocals, but I like the vibe of the songs she is on. It all leaves me a bit torn. What I’m not left torn on is that “Mezzanine” is Massive Attack’s best album, and it’s the one that should be on the list instead of “Protection” or “Blue Lines.” I definitely prefer Sarah Jane Hawley and Elisabeth Fraser’s vocals to Tracy Thorn’s. “Mezzanine” is nearly a five. “Protection” is fine, but worse by comparison.

Decent. Reminded me a lot of the chill Faithless sound

The first spacey electronicy album I actually liked, though it still faded a bit at the end

Enjoyed some of the songs, not so much others.

First off, I love this band name. I've heard of them, I assumed they were more techno/dance/high-energy based on the name, but having listened to this, I know I've heard them before. Anyway, clearly not enough to have made me super curious. I like this vibe, reminded me of Morcheeba (not a band I know a ton about, either, but an album I reviewed years ago and kept as part of my collection), but much like Doves, while I enjoyed the album (I actually listened to it twice), I'm not a convert or on a mission to explore the band's catalog. It was cool — I'll probably turn them on if we ever host a party as vibey background music to set a mood. But that's about the extent of the impact the album had on me. Not sure if the live version of "Light My Fire" was on the original release, but that was pretty unnecessary and easily my least favorite track.

I dig Massive Attack, but this one doesn't do much for me. Has some nice moments, but it's not as great as Blue Lines or Mezzanine (which somehow isn't on this list?). Perhaps, though, it's another one I wasn't in the right head space for. Mostly, I kept waiting for the songs to go somewhere. Euro Child and Sly were great. The rest, kinda meh.

Can’t lie I don’t really remember it. It was fine (I think), “trip-hop” just doesn’t grab me

Favourite song: Weather Storm (reminded me of a bit of music on Disco Elysium. One for the Karaoke: Light My Fire cover One for the Car: Heat Miser Just wanted to listen to Teardrop really

Not my thing, but listenable

This album absolutely screams 90s electronic. I enjoy the instrumentation but I really don't like the female electronic voice in the majority of these songs. Not really sure why but it always somehow makes the songs cornier. I 100% believe this album would be better without vocals.

A couple good songs, very smooth and lofi. Nothing stood out, but nothing bad about it.

Slow and mellow, mezzanine better

Not bad. The instrumental tracks definitely outshone the ones with vocals.

Nice grooves, I enjoyed it. But something about it feels deeply impersonal and it preventing me from really getting into it.

This album is a bit better than Blue Lines but it's no Mezzanine. I definitely think Massive Attack are at their best with a vocalist so the first couple tracks were my favorite.

very ironic timing

First song is so cool with its progressing beat elements. Makes me feel like I’m in a Matrix movie which fits in with the era of the 90s. The more I do this album activity the more I realize music is like a time machine. I enjoy listening to products that have defined their era. Did not finish though

Will never totally be my thing.

This was fine but doesn't feel like it belongs on this list. It's the 2nd Massive Attack album on this list too, which seems like at least one too many. Good background music but ultimately who cares.

Ändå bra. 3,5

not my scene

I think I liked the second album better

This was not close to being as good as Blue Lines - Blue Lines seems to have a much more developed sound, despite being three years earlier. This feels more focused on reggae/ska, early tracks very reminiscent of the Specials, and it's just a bit too slow for most of it for me. 3/5, disappointing.

Interesting choice of Massive Attack album to say the least. There are some definite highlights on this like the classical 'Weather Storm' and 'Euro Child' which would serve as the blueprint for the majority of tracks on Gorillaz' debut. However, when they decide to dip their toes into reggae like on 'Karmacoma' and 'Spying Glass' I lose all interest.

I enjoyed this, probably not enough for a 4* but a solid 3*

It's not bad at all. Just a bit boring

British triphop group. Protection was ok. I liked Three, Weather Storm and Heat Miser.

Quite a few styles and influences are represented here, and it's all quite good.

Smooth summer sounds.

Obviously not a must hear album by any metric, but it was a decent listen for the background. A little more like an ambience beats album.

Overall synth electronic music is not my thing so I approached this with a bit of rigid preconception. Well, there is a uniqueness to it. Sounds futuristic, mellow, as if entering a void or alternate dimension. At times like the space one can experience just before falling asleep. A bardo of sorts. I like that music can take you different places. This music is able to stimulate some hidden often neglected part of the brain. That is an achievement. But I wouldn't listen to it much, I can appreciate it though.

This was fine, nothing amazing.

Pretty solid album, but not any good individual songs. Heat Miser might be good for Road Work. Has a really groovy cover of Light My Fire.

Pleasant enough, but a bit boring if I'm being honest. Sort of like Portishead without the thrills. 3 stars.

I can see why people enjoy it, and on some level I understand why it's good. However, it's just meh to me. I can't connect with the music at all, and it's just background noise to me. I don't dislike it, but I don't really like it either.

I'm a fan of Massive Attack but haven't explored much of their music, I'm more acquainted with Mezzanine as I'm sure most people are. First few songs on this were super chill and a good warm up. Enjoyed the piano in "Weather Storm" along with its squishy bass line. "Spying Glass" almost sounded like the collabed with Fat Freddys Drop which was fun, surprised to see some "Reggae" in this. I think MA took a bit more of a relaxed approach to electronic music than most at this time, makes it more easy to connect with I think. It's hard to pick a stand out song from this album for me, as with all MA stuff, its so unique its hard to draw comparisons. That being said, it might have to be "Heat Miser", or "Better Things"

Very chilled, some songs a bit too long. Liked every song except the last one... Which was so out of place from the rest of the album.

Decent without being great

Best Song: Weather Storm. Nice instrumental chill track. good for relaxing or reading. Worst Song: Spying Glass. I became annoyed at the warble that was put at the end of each delivered vocal phrase. It felt like a weird call-out to reggae that didn't capture the best elements of reggae. Overall: Like the other Massive Attack album I've already had on this list, it feels like a chill but ultimately directionless collection of beats and slow jams. I will say that the vocal tracks were better on average here than on the other album, but still found myself getting bored at times.

Oh, hey look. Another British 90's electronic act that is a must-listen to. Just like the dozens of other British 90's electronic acts that are on this list. Aside from the above, this album is pretty good. 3/5.

Chreelin

Weaker than their debut or their classic followup Mezzanine but still a solid album. Massive Attack are always a good vibe.

Massive Attack albums are a bit of a trial. Wall to wall oppressiveness means listening in a single sitting is more hassle than it is rewarding

Interesting electronica album, not bad but wasn’t enthralled

Not the top one by Massive Attack, but solid

Never heard of them before. Interesting.

I enjoyed this one more than the previous Massive Attack album.

Enjoyable. But not much more than that.

decent

Super chillowe nuty, ale nic nadzwyczajnego. Każdy utwór próbował celować w trochę inny styl. Idealne do słuchania w tle. Light my fire na końcu totalnie z dupy.

Moments of 'huh' and some of 'nice'

Good but not as good as the other album of theirs we listened to!

I expected to like this one a lot more than I did. Could have been my mood on that particular day or could be some missing magic in the album.

I want to like Massive Attack so much, and I totally dug the start of this album, but I ultimately got bored.

Liked to know and hear this band. Cool music for working time.

Funky vibe going on, found it a little difficult to get into but enjoyed it nonetheless.

Not sure what to make of this record. I do like a lot of it, but what is it? Rap, reggae, jazz, hip hop, electronics? All of the above? I really liked Tracy Thorn’s vocals but she’s only on a couple of tracks. Most unusual version of a Doors song I’ve ever heard to close the record. While I like it, I think it’s music to play in the “quiet room” at a party, not the main event. Doesn’t make me want to see them live.

This was pretty interesting but nothing gripped me. It was a cool fusion of styles and well executed but I don’t feel like I ever need to hear this again

It's alright

I crept onto this album a few times, mostly because it didn’t get my attention too much and it was over before I realized. Very relaxing

I really liked the first track and was disappointed when the rest wasn't all in that vein. It wasn't until near the end with Heat Miser that I became interested again. It's gonna be a 3 for me here. || The best tracks could be part of a killer soundtrack to a sci fi video game, the worst sound like diddles of electronic synth fiddling.

Smooth 90's Nu Jazz.

A touch boring. I was expecting a bit more from them.

Chill as hell. 7/10

It is good music to listen while doing something else, but a bit forgettable

Torn about this one. I quite like electronic music. I hate hip hop with a passion. So many of these tracks get a hard pass from me. Heat Miser is nice, though. 2.5/5, which I'll round up.

97. Protection - Massive Attack - 10 tracks. I love Massive Attack, (or thought I did), but with the exception of the 2 tracks with Tracey Thorn vocals, this was just completely uninspiring and didn't even sound like them. I had been really looking forward to this.😖 3/5 😮

I've always heard massive attack talked about. I really liked the first track. I don't care too much for the other dudes vocals throughout this. It isn't bad just sounds a bit goofy to me every once and a while.

Not an album of theirs I knew particularly but enjoyed. Will listen more. Might even have been a 4.

Musically interesting. Not for me though

Protection is a pretty good song w cool guitars and haunting vocals. I would have bet a lot of money that the second song wasn’t the same band. It’s also a fun song. The rest of the album continues its genre surfing. It’s one of those cases that genre surfing works.

This was fine, but in think White Lines was a better effort.

I'd not listened to Massive Attack before this and I went in with absolutely no expectations. I quite enjoyed the album and would happily give it a 3.5 if I could.

Good mood music

Interesting electronic album.

honestly don't remember it, despite listening to it over lunch, so you get a 3

I'm not sure what this is really. Like electronic Amy Grant? I liked Spying Glass and Karmacoma. This album sort of reminded me of Portishead as well, which is a band I do like. I think this type of music is best suited for background music and even music to focus attention on tasks. It is mostly surface level to me, which is not a bad thing, but not something I can fully engage with.

3 good tracks

I don't know, there was nothing here that really stood out. With a name like \"Massive Attack,\" I was expecting something... harder. Something that was bigger, more MASSIVE. Instead it just seemed very... minor. There was a live track at the end of them covering \"Light My Fire,\" and it was very much how I felt about the album. It was... just unimpressive.

Nah. I remember when Massive Attack was all the rage and I didn't get it. Still don't. I don't need music to have sex to. Not interested in it so I can have a trippy experience or to hypnotize myself. What else is it good for? Decent beats but the music is better paired with female singers (too bad Tracey Thorn had her own stuff to keep her busy) than male ones (or the male ones chosen). Mezzanine was a better album. Next!

I like Massive Attack, but I like their later albums much better when they introduce a bit of an edge to the music (e.g., Mezzanine and 100th Window). Without that edge this is nice background music but has few moments that make me go "wow." Unfortunately, only this album and Blue Lines are included in the 1001 albums so it looks like we won't be getting any of the later albums. Oh, well. To each their own.

Not really my genre, but most of it was pleasant to listen to.

6/10. Pretty good, not especially my thing.

Too consistently low tempo for my taste. And I’m not a big fan of the reggae influences. Excellent production. 6/10

The Massive Attack albums I have owned are Blue Lines and Mezzanine. Personally, I prefer the exquisite bleakness of Mezzanine to Blue Lines too-cool-for-skool eclecticism, but both are rather fine albums. So, I was not unprepared for Protection. And, as someone who has enjoyed plenty of Massive Attack in the past, it's slightly disappointing. Don't misunderstand me, the music is of Massive Attack's high standard, but that's the problem. It feels safe, tentative. You hope for the band to evolve, for the album to take far more risks, but they seem to have been stymied by the success of Blue Lines, and as such we have a classic example of second album syndrome. I acknowledge that I sound overly negative, but that's because I know the group did better before and after. With this album, I wish they'd been more daring, and used less protection (thank you and goodnight!).

An old favourite

This was fine but file under electronic that’s on this list because UK

"three's my lucky number"

Good lounge sounds

Smooth Bristol dark acid jazz, trippy and chill with a jagged edge.

decent easy listening ambient/electronic album

not what i was expecting! interesting. i liked it. would listen again

Mild and chill but executed better by orhers

This is a great album to chill out to, or to have on in the background whilst studying or working or doing something you need to focus on. Best: Protection Worst: Spying Glass 2.5 Stars

Chill out. Dance

Second Listen. Gave it a 3/5 on first listen. Love the sound and vibe of this album. Very mellow and cool. Still a strong 3/5.

Erg 'lounge-achtige' muziek.

A nice enough dance album with one amazing standout track (Protection). One point deducted for an appalling love track tacked on for no apparent reason.

I enjoyed this album

Nice relaxing sounds. Good background music. My wife kept saying she liked it.

Certainly not what I expected. I have a techno-jazz vibe with this one. Would be a great slightly buzzed drivetime track

Nicer than blue lines

I like it 3+

Carino ma da risentire

MASSIVE ATTACK PEW PEW PEW

It's a very cinematic album. It sounds like it could be in the background of a heist or spy movie. For a soundtrack, it's pretty enjoyable; however as a regular listening album, I think it's not something I can vibe out to or to sing along to. Favorite track: Heat Miser

This album fucks. Idk how to describe the sounds but its such atmospheric stuff.

My biggest complaint is that it was a little boring. Sounds good, but I don't think I will come back to anything other than the title track. I'm not sure I'm the biggest fan of this kind of music either. Highlight: 1.

Personally I'm not really a Massive Attack fan, though I do appreciate that it was a part of the early downtempo/chillwave sort of sound.

Chill, smooth 90s

Chillig!

Good listen. I appreciate the diversity in styles, and generally liked them all. I preferred the tracks with the female vocals. Better Things was a standout. Some of the tracks ran unnecessarily long.

An album from Massive Attack that's not Mezzanine? Okay, this is gonna be something. Has a few really interesting tracks on it. But a few of them are very strange and eclectic.

Pleasant enough, though nothing really grabbed my attention.

me gustó tampoco demasiado

Strange album that I liked more than I expected. Kind of as background music though.

Pretty okay. I like the first track quite a bit. I have only listened to a little Massive Attack, but I think I might check out more. Didn't know they were this old either.

Hard to pin down album. Some of it i vibed with. But didn’t stand out to me.

I like this! Seems to have longer duration, than in reality.

i thought massive attack would suit me less, but it was a vibe

Repetitive. Karmacoma is a throwback though

Okay so it’s not bad. It’s weird but listenable. Mix between 90s pop and house music?

Sooooo ambient it was pretty boring. I like their later album, despite it also being super ambient, but this was just a bit long n slow for me

"Don't want to be on top of your list... Phenomenally and properly kissed..."

not that way inclined neither god or bad

On paper I should love Massive Attack. I haven't heard this album, but their other albums underwhelm. Not "bad" just not worth the hype.

It was nice to revisit Massive Attack. Also ended up revisiting Tricky. What does it say about me that I want to give everything a 3 4 or 5?

1994, Trip hop, reggae, sehr experimentell, Instrumentals aus: Hip Hop, electronica, Jazz/Blues?; Gesang: Rap, flows, Soul Gesang, Instrumentals; männlich und weiblich, geht gut, starke 3

Dub, reggae, electronic, even kinda r&b vibes. Not previously familiar with this album, and I don't like it as much as Mezzanine or Blue Lines. Not a huge fan of the Everything but the Girl singer's voice. Do like the reggae/dub tracks. Sound great with good headphones, feel stoned just listening.

Interesting sounds and vibe. Nothing incredible, but definitely good work music.

It's good

Most songs were mid for me. I did like a lot of the production on the album but they could have done a better job with the rest of it. 6,5/10 but it might change after some more listens

7.5/10

Fine. Didn't like it as much as Blue Lines, but yeah

Not really an album I would have listened to by myself, but I really liked it. Sonically, I thought it was a bit disjointed but the themes all did come together. Some of the songs are also unnecessarily long, I believe.

2 reten.

Massive wet fart… for some reason I thought I liked this group, but this album didn’t do anything for me. 1.8

I didn't really connect with this. There were moments that were cool but it never gelled into a cohesive whole for me

A mishmash of ill-fitting vocalists, regrettably united by an over-the-top sense of horniness

help! help! I've been massively attacked by subpar music!

Boring!

No private session used for Spotify. I am so hit at miss with electronic music, this was a complete miss. It had some elements of dub step, which I hate. This album was hard to go through, but I did it and won't do it again.

Some cool production, but I don’t think there is a single song over 80 BPM in this thing and maybe I’m just a brainlet that needs constant stimulation, but these songs aren’t doing anything interesting enough to offset how slow and boring they are. Some ok vocal performances as well, but again I’m not much for slow vibey vocals. This does nothing for me.

Jazzy edm? Idk not as cool as it sounds though if youd be into that but maybe you may? Not I though.

Just a groaner slog of an album for me I was just waiting for it to be over. 4/10

Too meandering, long and repetitive. Protection and Weather Storm were good tho

Spacey and chilly trip hop, often felt pretty aimless, with either stoney rapping or R&B hooks. So not my genre - never have been able to get into this vibe. Pass.

A couple of tunes I enjoyed, but it was mostly repetitive, ponderous, boring. Never heard Light My Fire sound like a dirge.

I was quite pleased when I saw an album by "Massive Attack". I popped it on and went to the gym, hoping for the perfect backing track to massively attacking my glutes. Unfortunately it was an absolute mush fest and I feel like the name is false advertising. Boring downbeat songs that never seemed to go anywhere. The whole album dragged on too long and I couldn't wait for it to end. Despite this, I still managed to destroy my glutes, thanks for asking.

Heat riser and all I can hear is death Vader breathing noises

Not what I expected, not that I'm sure what I expected. But this wasn't it. Not a fan though.

Not my cup of tea at all really, but I'm having a listen to a few tracks anyway.

Ok, I guess, better than I feared. Liked the dubby parts the best.

Apart from the title track I wasn't overly enamoured.

Massively overrated.

I definitely needed to hear this before I died. I can pass on now. 2/5

Chilliant

Boring music. Nothing except the putative Jamaican parts stamd out.

Not my vibe.

This came out when while I was working at a record store and at the time there were three albums that everyone who worked there would agree to. Renegade Soundwave, the first Soul Coughing, and this. This is probably the first time since then that I've listened to it, and I have to say it is nowhere near as good as the Blue Lines, which I got just a few days ago. At least Renegade Soundwave and Soul Coughing still hold up

I do not understand this affinity for Massive Attack

I thought I might like this more but no.

Chalk this one up to “not for me” it’s certainly competent but I did not enjoy my time with it. 2.5/5

Protection is a fairly chill album at times, but overall I found it kind of dull.

Not sure if they’re going for hypnotic or ambient here, it’s mostly just boring. Some of the songs seem to start with a good idea but then never develop into anything more. Aural wallpaper that does nothing for the room.

The cover looks like the guy from interactive buddy.

I think I'm trying to convince myself I like this which usually is a bad sign. Some of this was interesting but for the most part it missed for me.

One day this list will be free of electronica

While I quite enjoy a bit of Massive Attack when the wind is blowing in the right direction, I’ve never ‘got’ the idea of trip-hop as some kind of musical revolution. I like my musical revolutions with a burst of urgency. This just sounds like the birth of the coffee shop record.

Older electronic music can be kinda hit or miss for me. I like a few of these, but most are misses unfortunately

I have pretty much the same thoughts as the last massive attack album. There was definitely some interesting ideas but it's not really for me. I can see how it was influential though

Eh I dunno. I think only like one MA song, and not a ton. This band just bores me

Tried to get into this on multiple occasions but just didn’t connect for me. Didn’t mind it but not memorable and not something I’ll go back to. 2.5

Trip-hop is all things, so doesn't really go with anything

That was confusing and fine

I didn’t care for most of the guest vocals and as far as background music goes it’s pretty mid.

Electronic is sometimes a little weird. There are some good tracks on this one. An OK album.

fine trip hop

Not really my thing. Sort of lounge/pool light jazz.

The piano accents on weather storm sound like they were taken straight from breath of the wild. Otherwise even though it’s non offensive I’ve just never been able to click with massive attack. This album made me feel like it was 2am in a sleazy bar and I didn’t belong there.

I know Massive Attack are important in the world of trip hop but I’ve always had trouble connecting with the collective. I’m a huge fan of Portishead’s whole discography so it’s not like I don’t dabble in trip hop. This project to me just sound bland. Not bad but bland. Not a fan of the light my fire sample either.

i don’t like this at all. it’s not that it’s bad, it’s just not good.

I’m not sure what if anything to make of this. All I know is I won’t be enthused to hear them again.

This didn’t really do anything for me? I dunno. Just a bit… dull? Maybe not in the mood.

Prey boring overall. The only good song was Heat Miser and it was short. Everything else felt twice as long as it was. 2/5

I was liking the beginning of the album, but then just found the rest of it boring and monotonous. The last song especially was a rough listen. I could see why someone would like this album though.

1. Protection - Decent. Groovy. But a little boring. 5.5/10. 2. Karmacoma - Nice little train track rhythm. Repetitive 6/10 3. Three - Bjork sensibility + Eartha Kitt charisma. Cute. 7/10 4. Funky. and this is where I stop lol DNC

Fairly dull stuff here.

I wasn't really much of a fan of this. It really feels like elevator music in a lot of ways, but not the groovy kind, the boring kind. There seems to be no variance at all, and it makes me really want to fall asleep. Good on the people that enjoy it, but not me. Their other album on the list is a lot better.

lots of nice, bassy kicks on this album. I liked Euro Child but other than that it’s not really my thing. never been into trip hop. super atmospheric, though

- i have always wanted to like massive attack more than i do - was honestly bored till "euro child"

Moderate Offense Track I kinda liked: Three. Would I revisit: no.

If I was rolling Molly or some shi, this would be fire. But alas, I’m sitting at work sober listening to this at 9AM and it is not hitting

meh. Some good tracks on here, but got a bit boring.

A little sleepy for me, wished it sailed up the funky spacy vibes

Inégal mais globalement très oubliable.

I can’t understand

niet overtuigd
