Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Not really my cup of tea.
I found it… dull.
I don't get it. Massively banal.
Found this fairly bland, probably wasn't in the right mood for it.
Again this album suffers from it being on Friday. I was let down by it and expected to love this one. Favourite song was Karmacoma
This was pretty boring
Background music. It was fine for that but I don't need to listen to this again. 2 stars
Nothing about this stood out. A lot of repetitive phrasing which in this genre is common but is one of the reasons I don’t care much for it. The first track Protection stood out due to the female vocalist. The rest was ok at best.
I have to admit I have heard people discuss the band Massive Attack before, but I never imagined their sound to be so... soft, free from attacks? Not my cup of tea exactly but Karmacoma was pretty cool.
Massive Attack's middle child that got the least amount of love from both the artist and the audience (we don't count the post 90s releases). The duo is banking on a chilled out, largely barebones cosmetics, muffled mix, prioritising vibes over workable writing.
I try to get into Massive Attack but I think I missed the moment to really get into them. So I'm mostly just left with the theme song from House.
Much like the cuisine of their native land of England, this album is bland, tasteless, and unamusing.
Not my thing, very techno
Not into it.
Doesn’t match their best. Album is patchy. Cover art 4/5
I may never understand this band's appeal.
Protection is too slow, too chilled, not impactful enough for me. Dull 2/5.
Decent
Massive shite
Apart from Protection, this album doesn't do anything for me and I wouldn't listen again
Title track is a 5⭐️ classic but it loses marks at an alarming rate from there on in.
Nice variety, but nothing really noteworthy.
I don’t dig the reggae influence on this record at all. And I absolutely adore reggae! Is it a good thing if one of the best track on a trip hop album is the closest thing to a classical piece; “Weather Storm”? I was gonna hand this a 3 until I was reminded of the horrendous cover of “Light My Fire”. How on earth this was included on the original track list is beyond me.
Uninspiring.
Not a big fan of this style of music, listened to more as just background noise rather than something that grabbed me
It’s like I woke up in a hip-hop themed spa. Pleasant enough but far too heavy on the trip (and light on the hop).
A cut above dinner music, but how far above is not entirely clear to me. Most tracks bleed into each other, so hard to think of a standout.
Lol what is this album. It's so weird I kinda like it. I'd say 2.125. 1. Protection 2. Spying Glass 3. Karmacoma
Silent and slow, massive attack is not for me
Yet another electronic album, this one with half songs that are heavily influenced by different genres and the other ones purely instrumental. Unfortunately none of them at a rather good level but rather annoyingly bad
Getting bad Filter / Incubus vibes from this album art. Never listened to Massive Attack before, so let's see what this is. There's a fine vibe here overall but it never pulls me in. That is, until we get to this version of Light My Fire at the end and, oh man, if you wanted me to want to turn this off, mission accomplished.
As a rule I dislike the whole trip-hop deal, but honestly? I didn't mind this. Perhaps it's the fact that it leans into jazz somewhat, perhaps it's the surprising variety on display - and certainly, production-wise, it sounds great. Superior mood music, then, but don't necessarily use my rating as any kind of barometer; I still don't like trip-hop.
Yeah, I dunno. I probably liked this one better overall compared to the other Massive Attack record we listened to, but I wouldn't say any of this feels particularly essential. This is literally the type of music kids do their homework to these days (seriously: look up LoFi Girl on YouTube) because it's so unobtrusive yet still has a beat to help keep you from falling asleep. I like some of that stuff better than this. And I still would prefer to listen to Portishead. But there were moments on this one that worked just fine in that background space of staying interesting without being obnoxious. The notable exception being, indeed, the last song which does not need to be mentioned again by name. The site skipped Motorhead on me completely, so I had to listen to that one today. I kind of think that if you can write a genuinely good song about your band's road crew then you can pretty much do whatever you want. This shit rules. I didn't love "Dance," but if somebody asked me for an album that tears things up in a "Back in Black" kind of way, but with more zits and cigarettes... this is the first record I'd reach for.
Massive Attack may be the least appropriately named band on the planet. 'Medium Sized Pacificst' would be more apt. This album was not as coma-enducing as Blue Lines, but is dull, dull, dull. I once saw Massive Attack live. They were pretty boring. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Protection Date listened: 24/06/22
Ok
Not for me. Does have a bit of a relaxing feel, especially compared to other electronic albums, but I still couldn't get into it really.
Because of my last experience with Massive Attack, I was expecting a 1-star album with annoying electronic music that just takes too long to be enjoyable. I'm happily surprised that this was not exactly the case. It's still far from my preference for music, but I didn't hate these 45 minutes as I expected before. I believe that the hip-hop and reggae influence in some songs helped a lot to be an almost enjoyable album.
trudde eg likte massive attack, men detta skuffa
Pretty forgettable. Nothing offensive, but certainly didn't NEED to listen to this.
Not my jam
Good sound but could not get into it
Boring
Not great. Background noise but nothing I was focusing on to really hear.
Sort of on the fence this one, wasn't against it, but wouldn't revisit.
I found this album to be mid. It was vibey but never really took off for me. Parts of sounded like cinema score and I mean that in a bad way. Parts were sonically interesting but it never coalesced for me in the way that every great album does. The light my fire cover was the best track, if the album had more like that I would have liked it.
ekki ég
Muddy beats, smooth vocals, easy listening for the mid 90s. Best Tracks: Protection, Karmacoma; Heat Miser
I liked the first song on the album, but that was it.
7th February 2022 Listened throughout the day, went to see scream 5 in the evening at streatham odeon with noisy girls behind us. I can appreciate massive attack but not sure I’d listen again and again. 2.5 if I could.
This was boring. Early 90s electronic was neither that good nor that influential
It's cool, it's fine, idk man I just didn't really get it all that much. No two songs sound the same but that's not necessarily a good thing just like how every song on an album sounding alike isn't necessarily a bad thing, eh. It's a good album, 2.5/5
Atmospheric, mellow good moody music but one listen was enough.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Protection, Sly Cutting Edge: Euro Child Overall Notes: "Naw this shis reeul mewshick!!!"- the British people who heard Massive Attack put laid back hip-hop beats underneath soul/R&B tracks. British mfs will not survive the rapture. (this is a bit. the music isn't actually bad but it's kinda boring and I don't see what the hype is about. it reminded me of fever ray but less sonically unique. yes I understand they came 15 years earlier and were probably one of the first to do this kind of music. doesn't make it nothing but mildly interesting background music.)
In not a 'Massive' fan of them on the whole and I think this album is really boring. The albums before and after it were miles better in my opinion
Don't think I really get this one, but enjoyed a few of the tracks.
I did not dig it
Not terrible... but definitely not for me.
nice groovy beats. not bad, chill electronic music. kind of boring
This was an interesting one - an album that I bought as a teen and absolutely hated! Adult me has slightly more time for it, but I still think the title track is whiny as hell, and a lot of the songs are barely better than background music. It gets slightly better from there, with a few good beats and nice raps (highlights for me are karmacoma and heat miser), but due to my entirely arbitrary rating system and the fact I think I'd feel disappointed if you gave me this as a gift, it gets a 2.
Hearing we'd listen to an album by Massive Attack I was hoping to hear an album in the style of mezzanine -- only song I'm really familiar with is Teardrop (sorry for the stereotype). And with those expectations I was severely let down. It was a decent album, sure, but I was bored for a large portion of it.
First song was fire rest of the songs were eh
Known before: n/a Favorite: protection
Smooth chill album
Decent 90s electronica/trip hop. Good downtempo beats and solid female vocals. Nice range of genres. Checked out and preferred both mezzanine and blue lines after.
I read somewhere in the comments under one Talking Heads song that this is how MA would sound if they existed back then. Because of that I was looking forward to this album. Now I am looking forward to listening to the next one as soon as possible.
Liked the balance in going back and forth between the female and male singer. A bit ambient for my tastes - liked the Doors cover bonus track.
Very dull, nothing stands out to me and then they stick a live version of a dreadful cover on the end
There’s nothing worse than hearing clear talent dish out something boring and dull. I remember hating this in the 90s and whilst I can appreciate it’s well put together it’s boring as hell. So much better was to come
July 22, 2021 I liked one or two tracks on here (Karmacoma) but wasn't really into the rest. OK background music but not sure I'd just listen to it for its own sake. I think I'd prefer a little more upbeat. I really, really dislike the last track. Why did they include that?
Nope. I can recognize the talent and the good songwriting, but long instrumental breaks and songs longer than 6 minutes aren’t for me. The really slow electronic sound doesn’t work for me either. I will say that the lyrics in Protection (title track) and Better Things stick out, but I only saved the latter because the song Protection is just. way. too. long.
I do not like Better things. The lines in that song are terrible. "Say the sparks are gone. Well get an electrician." cheese
👑 🕶 🎤
This is pretty boring. huge letoff for this list imo
This was really not my style, I thought it was too repetitive.
Bit too chill out tent for me
Started off enjoying the first few tracks, but it just seemed to get worse and worse. Not a Massive fan! 🤣🤣🤣
This album was just okay. Alittle boring.
Psss
2/5 couple of good songs in it, not their best stuff overall. Couple bits really drag the album down.
Not feeling this one, a few decent tracks but definitely not to my tastes
More house-adjacent. Not terrible, not groundbreaking
inte min påse potatis
Just not my thing.
Nothing “must hear” in this album. I find no reason why this album would make the list. 1/5
2/10 I did not enjoy this that much
Iiiiiiiiiiit's more British electronic DJ music!!! It's got the addictinggames.com interactive buddy ready to tuck into a pie of some description on the cover, so it has that going for it. Unfortunately for us all, that is where the moderately positive feelings breathe their last. We start with a 78 minute song with the same shitty riff played throughout, under flat musings about being a girl and you (the proverbial you) being a boy. Infantile gibberish over the musical equivalent of WWI canned bread rations. Does it get any easier from there? Well, after the reggae song about boiling in a glass prison under the desert sun (?), there was a lyrical passage that read "You say the magic's gone, but I'm not a magician, you say that the spark's gone, but I'm not an electrician." No more words are needed. 0 Genre: Steam blasted human skulls
1 star because zero is not an option.
Don’t know how this would have made anyone’s top 1000 albums list. I got so bored at the end I had to start skipping through songs
:/
not my cup of tea
Meh
This is what electronica would sound like if Annie Lennox had to do the vocals for all of it. An eight minute song to start things off is a real drag. This album is made for people cooler than I am. British rap is ridiculous. This album feels very long. I'm counting down until this over. This is one of the most boring albums I've had so far. This album is terrible and the breathing sounds on Heat Miser are the worst part of the whole thing. This album is the perfect example of why you cannot trust music critics. No one could possibly like the breathing noises, it's one of the most annoying sounds in real life, but somehow it doesn't impact how this album is viewed. And the piano part is too reminiscent of Tubular Bells. A terrible live cut of a cover of the Doors Light My Fire closes out what is an awful listen.
Low-slung, dub-tinged grooves built from deep bass pulses, soft breakbeats, airy synth washes, and gently folded-in vocals move this trip-hop album like leaning back into a worn sofa while rain taps the window—cool, unhurried, and so laid-back that its restraint becomes both its charm and its limitation.
No good songs on the whole album.
DNF -Y'all just had me listen to this band... kind of pissin me awf. I'm not finishing
The WORST album to listen to on the stair master, it made 20 mins feel like forever I can’t appreciate the artistry but I just did not enjoy
All sounds the same to me
Sooooooooooooooo borrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiingggggggggggggg
Are you gonna keep sending me Massive Attack albums? No.
With a name like massive attack I was thinking it would be more. This album wants you to get laid but has a weak game. Like they listened to good music then tried to reproduce it and instead made everyone involved sad and in need of a drink.
Nope
Not enjoying this.
I really don't like Massive Attack. It's too jazzy for me
Hard to sit through
Unexpected and not really in a good way
massive attack of boredom and drowsiness
Heat Miser was kind of hot with that piano making me feel like I'm heading to an exorcism
Not really my bag. I don't mind the music but it never really goes anywhere. It might be nice to maybe relax to but where the song starts it also ends and rarely seems to deviate so it's kind of boring to me.
This reminded me of a long road that leads nowhere. Sure, occasionally there's one or two pretty vistas to admire, but you inevitably end up resenting the journey you're on.
One of my favorite parts of this project is seeing how different my music taste from everyone else. I'm legitimately baffed that anyone could like this music because I didn't enjoy a second of it.
I have a, at this point, long written record of getting mad whenever any of this stuff comes up on the list. This time I groaned, put it on, and then thought “Hey this song is pretty cool. The singer is good, and it’s got a bit more dynamics than a lot of other recordings do, I like that” And then the second song came on and I was like Charlie Brown kicking the football. Massive Attack remains better than their peers, on the whole this is more like a 1.75, 2. But the experience of it was as 1 as it gets.
blegh
didn't really like it tbh
This is the 85th album I’m rating. I listened to Maxinquaye by Tricky and it was pretty cool so hopefully this’ll be cool. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Protection, Karmacoma, Three, Weather Storm, Spying Glass, Better Things, Euro Child, Sly, Heat Miser, and Light my Fire. All in all I liked 0/10 songs. Maxinquaye had this really nice grimy, gritty vibe that I really liked that this album lacked. The whole thing felt too clean for me.
BORING
I like the first track, but I think a lot of that is due to Tracey Thorn's feature, because the very next song reminds me why did not like the first Massive Attack album that came up. It's just boring. Most of the music is crappy loops, and the parts that aren't are incredibly uninteresting, like if a jazz soloist simply did not give a shit. It just stinks. It's uninteresting and boring. I'm thankful there's a handful of singers, because that variety is the only thing saving this from being a 1/10 for me. Favorite Song(s): Protection
Electronic music not my cup of tea
Started off chill, then thought.. who is electronic music for? Does anybody actually like this?
What does this add that all their other albums don't already do? I honestly couldn't tell the difference between this and any other one of their albums. One massive attack album on this list I don't like, but I get. To have this on here is just dumb.
Terrible sounding for my taste
Not a fan. I am sure when I read the write up my opinion might change.
1. protection - 1 2. koma - 1 3. three - 1.5 4. ztorm - 1 5. glazz - 1 6. better - 1.5 7. child - 1 8. zly - 1 9. heat - 1 10. fire - 0
It's so bad it could be used for the background of a specialized adult movie
Meh. 1.5
Honestly the worst fucking album I’ve heard
Album 437 of 1001 Massive Attack - Protection Rating : 1 / 5 Electronica crap that doesn't appeal to me. They attempted some partial melodies but just doesn't cut it, for me.
Meh
Nothing special here at all.
i don’t know i just could not could i write poetry to thjs? n
Some of these songs are ok. A bit like wallpaper - you don't notice anything's there after a while..but some are actively cringe and it was a struggle not to skip. Maybe you had to be there. Best track: Spying Glass
Elevator music
1.5
For a band called Massive Attack, I didn't expect such a snooze-fest. This was really really bad. I was almost longing for Everything but the Girl - it was that terrible... almost. I just can't get over how bad this was.
Ya know i don’t like this genre. It’s too plain and it’s pure adventure music. I mean that I would never opt to listen to this music on my own accord
I'm trying to find something to say about it. I had heard of the name Massive Attack before, and thought they were like a new wave band or something with more rock elements. So I was surprised to hear this electronic, trip-hop, vibe music with hints of rap and club music. But altogether, it wasn't an interesting listen to me. It's just not in my wheelhouse of enjoyability. Feels like I'm shopping at the mall at a department store, and it's just background dance/trance music. Some of it like you would hear on the Weather Channel while it scrolls through the upcoming forecasts. The beats are nice, and I enjoy some of the rap elements, but the songs don't evolve. Not much in the way of crescendos or swells, no emotional heft or grip. They start, they go, and they end. Not for me.
Of course this ends with a Doors cover.
Started off kind of funky but then went nowhere. Somehow managed to be both weird and boring at the same time.
I could not believe how much boring that was. I really like Mezzanine and Blue Lines, but this? This is pathetic.
Ermmmmm, just no. Not my thing. I actually had high expectations because I knew one Massive Attack song (Teardrop) that I really liked. But this album did nothing for me.
Nicht gehört lol
Not my vibe.
19 Based on this scale: 1 - 0 to 19 2 - 20 to 39 3 - 40 to 59 4 - 60 to 79 5 - 80 to 100 This is just boring.
Felt too experimental, non melodic, off beats and sound effects and synth and, crossover of reggae / electrónica,
Awful, just awful
Did not enjoy
Not good
I appreciated the James Brown sample and Doors cover. Or at least an attempt at a Doors cover.
Was going to give this a 2 but I'm just soo bored. I never want to listen to this ever again.
Right, okay, another massive attack of absolute shit. God I hate this. Boo! Boo! Hisssssss, boo! I think I've mentioned before that I hate electronic music, yes? Enough already, please. Jesus fucking christ, how many seminal electronic albums can there possibly be?!?! I'd like to change my order.
This is ass. No wait, ass is good. This is the opposite of that. 1
Ok, allowing for the talent it must have taken to create these tracks, I really really didn’t like it. Fancied cutting off my ears by track 3 but somehow persevered and got to the end. There is contained within both some of the most forgettable music I’ve ever heard along with a couple of tracks that I wish I could forget. Not for me.
Not my cup of tea.
droning elevator music with a large helping of bored muttering vocals. the listless sound of waiting for your mom to finish shopping at some industrial-chic boutique store
Väärä vuosikymmen. Väärät päihteet?
Nope
Not for me :(
New artist! Not for me! 1/5
Not my vibe. Couldn’t get into it at all. Did not finish.
not kanye
This must be the precursor for those generic 6 hour ambient electronic atmospheric early afternoon morning coffee while you study while you code while you spark a j while you take a shit chill out vibes for late autumn strolling cold winter afternoon at home by the fire meditation yoga contemplating the meaning of life outer space traveling the universe zoning out and finding inner peace mixes.
Trash pop
Can’t really get into it
Ikkje nåke for meg.
I couldn't finish this. I was totally bored. Not sure why I didn't like this one verse the last Massive album.
No, no, no.
Why?
Didn't finish, none of the tracks felt like they ever got going within the first minute or so
Not Known at All, This is Just a Weird Album.
It is definitely not bad, but its very boring to be honest.
This album was simply not for me. 2/10.
not my cup of tea
Nope, not my thing.
Oof, this album was not for me. The constant beat drove me crazy, and the breathing on the Heat Miser track was so unbearable I actually cried out "Make it stop!" even though I know I could have made it stop- I didn't want to because I haven't not completed an album on this list so far and didn't want to start.
Not a fan
blehhhh
Reggae, synth, hip-hop. Didn’t mind Protection but didn’t like any others, especially not Karmacoma, Eurochild or Heat Miser.
The "Light My Fire" live version was pretty dope at the end but the rest is just not for me. Unless it's Dilla or someone along those lines the instrumental/trip-hop thing is not for me.
couple of 12 year olds with a casio keyboard
*nose plugged* 0.9
It was okay, but not my type. None of this project was that memorable to me. I think Heat Miser was my favorite song, but I don't really understand this kind of music. 3/8.
Massive attack on my eardrums This is the worst album Boring or boring and shite Repetitive
