Reviews (page 7 of 8)

This ended up being a mixed bag, unexpectedly. I wanted more of the sultry trip hop and less of the weirdly Rastafarian sounding music with half spoken, half rapped vocals (like Karmacoma). There's parts of a good album here. The title track is pretty solid and I dug Weather Storm. I was ready to write this off entirely, but the last couple tracks (Sly and Heat Miser) did exactly what I wanted them to. More instrumental focus, chilled out EDM beats. Makes it hard to rate, but as an album, I can't say I want to come back to this anytime soon.

Massive attack- not bad and it was probably pretty hip at the time. But this kind of chilled out electronic music has evolved into contemporary elevator music. Like the kind of stuff you hear at the lobby bar of a boutique hotel in Miami or YouTube work out video.

Maybe this was a vibe at the time but pretty uninteresting and forgettable i thought

I’m not trying to be rude when I say this but I have no idea when this music would be good to listen to

Early electronic. Feels repetitive

I liked some of the beats, some of the bass riffs, but none of the vocals. Light my Fire was....not great.

Song-by-song Live Commentary: Protection: felt like I was in an elevator Karmacoma: an I listening to the same artist? Feels like someone made this song on a really good quality recording of garage band. Three: might be her lucky number, but this is the number of songs off this album I can stand before going crazy from boredom. Weather Storm: back in the elevator, but now it’s raining. Spying Glass: I totally zoned out and didn’t even realize I missed a song at first. I guess that’s a good summary of all of these songs. Better Things: I like the bass line. Euro Child: euro-killing me with this music. Although the lyrical flow was nice. Sly: Boop. Boop boop. Beep boop. Boop boop. Heat Miser: that piano riff sounds like it belongs to the Halloween soundtrack. I like the build up with that and the drums. But then they took away that piano riff :(( This album is not for me.

I can absolutely appreciate this album and massive attack as setting the basework for what the world has in electronic music and how it's developed as a genre. I would probably return to this album but wouldn't be annoyed if it was on in the background

Not my cup of tea

Whatever

What a SNOOZER man. I haven’t had an album in a minute that I was goading on to end (PIL excluded; I didn’t want to be there at all). This has some cool moments, euro child sticks out, but mostly it’s just a drag. Definitely not irredeemable, but portishead does it 100 times better. I’m sure this is someone’s jam and I’m happy for them, but it’s not mine. Still, cool moments.

“Love, love is a verb.”

Can appreciate, but a bit too slow paced for me.

Underwhelming. I've heard some other songs by Massive Attack, and I liked them. But the album just doesn't hit with me at all. It doesn't stand out, it doesn't appeal, it just feels like background noise to me. The beats are sometimes pleasant but they don't build to anything. It isn't god awful, but it's going to be forgotten as soon as I move on to another album.

You can hear that a lot of thought and effort has been put in this. Every lick and note seems to have been carefully calibrated to deliver a perfect Trip Hop album. I find it fucking boring though. It's kind of weird and that it somewhat rewards attentive listening, but the nature of this genre is that it's very much background music. I just forget to really care for it, not my thing I guess.

All over the place musically but not interesting enough for more listening.

I really thought I would like this one more than I did. There are some Massive Attack tracks that I have really enjoyed, but I did not enjoy this album. 2 stars seems harsh, but I really have no desire to return to this one.

Yeah, not for me. Not bad as background music I guess? But repetitive and feels like hold music at times.

Did nothing for me

Guess I’m just not a massive attack fan

A not-too-annoying electronic album that I did not connect with personally.

Oh boy. Would've liked to enjoy, but for me is just a hard pass. And what was done to LIGHT MY FIRE should have been declared a sin. I was not aware of use of their music in the TV series Bones, so I've heard at least one track before. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite track? N/A ⭐⭐ Hatedthat I couldn't like it.

I have a headache today, so I appreciate how chill this is. Any other day, I might not be so into it. I was trying to figure out how I knew of Massive Attack. Their song Teardrop is the theme song from House MD. Misophonia skip on Heat Miser. Can't listen to the breathing.

I really thought I’d like this album more. I had a few songs from this record saved to my liked tracks on Spotify so it looked promising, but ultimately fell short. It felt like the songs went on too long and didn’t really resolve into anything. The repetitiveness of some of the songs prevented me from listening back more than twice. I found it hard to leave on in the background, it was too distracting.

This may be drawing some building ire undeservedly, but I'm failing to see what about this was something I had to listen to. It's unphenomenal electronic bleh capped at the end with a bad cover of a great song. It's far from the worst thing I've listened to in this project, but it's not exactly good.

not my style at all

Keep the British guy far from the microphone and you’ve got something going. Most of the tracks with female vocals felt like something I’d hear during the opening credit sequence for a Bond film. The DNA of an album I like is here, but the result is too rough.

Try as I might, I am just not much of a brooding Londoner in the middle of the rainy night in 1992

this a point thing 2

Massive Attack is always kinda meh for me. 2.5/5

I can listen to it while sleeping.

Whilst I like some stuff by Massive Attack, it isn’t found on this album. My aversion to the band Everything But the Girl made me recoil a little at the presence of Tracey Thorn vocal on this, even “Protection”, which is the only song I already knew on this album.

What’s with all these mellow electronica garbage albums. I thought Massive Attack was supposed to be good. This sucked but not as bad as the ones I’ve rated.

A lot of variety. The singer on the first track and a few others reminds me of Natalie Merchant. The artist name Massive Attack made me expect a rock album. I was wrong! Some kind of electronica hybrid.

Hated it in the 90s, hate it today.

I was thinking this wasn’t bad, just boring - and then they did that awful cover of Light My Fire. I am a big Doors fan, but I don’t mind covers of their stuff, in fact I think the Will Young cover of this very song is actually pretty good. This one, though … this is fucking terrible, and drags the album down with it. Shite.

Not for me. Kinda boring. Vocals are corny

boring but not bad

Ehh it was ok.

I enjoyed the first album by Massive Attack from this list. This one seemed to drag more for me. It felt tedious at times and I would recommend their first album more. Not that this was a bad album, but man, it's much slower and sleepier.

Det instrumentella är ändå okej, till och med bra ibland. Gillar inte sången. Men som helhet, inget vidare intryck.

Not quite there.

Utterly forgettable. It didn’t grab me at all. I realised during track 7 that I hadn’t been listening since track 4. It’s not bad in a musical sense, but it’s pretty dull.

Ummm…

I hate bland electronica. And that's exactly what this was! Yippee. Lyrics were incoherent at best, songs were slow and plodding, repetitive, they did nothing with this album. The Doors should be offended that one of their most famous songs was butchered so horrifically at the end there. I'm not a big Doors fan but good Lord above that was awful.

Snooze fest

My second Massive Attack album and imo not as good as the first (Blue Lines). This just doesn’t do it for me for whatever reason.

Love Mezzanine but not this one. A couple of them sound like background music for the weather channel. Still some amazing eduction especially for the time.

Fine, but nothing I'll come back to

There's only 1 Heat Miser song I want to hear and this ain't it. 2.4.

Well, this was boring. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

I don't think I'm cool enough to enjoy Massive Attack.

Just noise strung together in a mildly organised way

Nice sound, don't know or like any of these songs though

I think the massive attack albums before and after this one have songs I both know and like. This has neither

J'ai rompiche

It was going ok until they murdered Light My Fire.

Muzak (lift music) performed by robots. How marvelous. There are a 1001 artists that music lovers should hear before they die. It's tragic that one will squander in obscurity because of the inclusion of Massive Attack's mediocre follow up to Blue Lines.

It was bad enough but then they had to commit that absolute slander against the Doors

Cool and slick. Like a soundtrack to an after hours thriller in Europe featuring a Sade imposter.

There's a couple of MA songs I really like as the my seem to do stuff. None of them feature here, none of these tracks do anything...

Chiantos la zic

Anything w Tracey Thorn is certainly worth listening to and I’m a huge Everything But the Girl fan. But this lands a bit like milquetoast for me.

I like Massive Attack! Mezzanine is a great album! But this one didn't really do it for me. "Karmacoma" and "Heat Miser" were the only songs I really got into on here

Outstanding? - not at all. Perfect for elevators in a shopping mall

How is this on the list but Mezzanine isn’t? I’d not actually heard this album before, but I wasn’t missing much. Incredibly mid from a band that is capable of much better. Just nothing of note on here and was glad when it was over. Boring.

Je l'ai écouté d'une oreille pour tout dire, ça m'a pas pris

Massive Attack’s Protection is a subdued follow-up to their groundbreaking debut, but it feels too restrained for its own good. While the title track and “Karmacoma” show flashes of brilliance, much of the album drifts into repetitiveness and lacks the innovation that defined Blue Lines. The moody atmosphere is consistent, but at times it slips into monotony rather than depth.

This is the 9th album i've listened to. It was really my thing I think this is thefirst one that i can wonder why it was on this list I dont know whats coming up but i just didnt really enjoy anything about this one at all. 68/100

Second Massive Attack album in 4 days. Hate this one as much as the first one. Hopefully no more from this artist on the project.

2/5 Best Track - "Karmacoma"

Massive attack? More like hit or miss

Only listened to their top songs before. Didn't like this album.

Pretty much the same experience as the earlier appearance from Massive Attack with "Blue Lines". This is just mostly repetitive and quite boring music, which it likely doesn't try to be be succeeds at accidentally. The saving moments are the female vocals in a select few songs as well as some of the instrumentals which are interjected between the percussive beats, but not enough to save this from a lower score. As a listening experience this album receives a 2/5.

Endnu et fedt nok ambient album, men den her blev ødelagt af det meget mærkelige og dårlige cover af light my fire til sidst. Stor 2er

I'm generally a Massive Attack fan, but this is truly one of their least impressive albums (P<BL<100W<H<M). The songs are pretty forgettable, though the best tracks imo are the instrumental tracks. Ending with that horrible Doors cover was a serious lapse in judgement. 2/5

Beautiful voice but honestly I just find it boring. At least it’s soothing boring.

So, so

It was ok

Anyone else find this really uninteresting?

Listening notes: -Credit where due: I put this on and only knowing one Massive Attack song, I was like, "oh yeah, this is obviously the same band that did teardrop". Very distinctive style. -That said, this band feels very 90s puka shell necklace. I'm not sure thats a critique per se, but this musical affect seems largely not to have left the late 90s--no one seems to have imitated it or been inspired by it. -Euro Child: weird song. Could almost work in the background, but I don't love active listening. The sort of quasi-rapping that 90s band love is always a little hit or miss for me. On a second listen, the vocals here drive me up the wall. Review: Not entirely sure what this says about me/the album, but I found this album pleasant when it was in the background, but kinda annoying when I was actively listening. I wouldn't exactly say dislike it. And they have an absolutely distinctive sound that feels innovative maybe? Unfortunately the vocals here range from annoying but tolerable to really annoying. 2.5 stars. I'm rounding down, because I decided to be fair I'd look into the lyrics and they were empty. But if I want to be in a trance as I write code, this honestly isn't the worst option.

Seemed like ambient music. Not very interesting ambient music

I love massive attack but this is their worst album give me like mezzanine or heligoland or blue lines what

To preface, I do not believe this album was bad. It just did nothing for me. None of the songs stuck out as being exceedingly good or bad. There wasn't anything about this album I found inherently offensive, it just bored me. Vocals were fine and the music was as well. I just think "trip hop" is not for me. Electronica isn't my favorite, and I wasn't really getting much of the hip hop aspects from this album.

I can appreciate the poetic cacophony that is this album, but, it was… a lot…

# 523 : Protection Zzzzz. BORED. More music to fall asleep by. Don't listen and drive! Hahaha. A two line bio, not much meat and just a sad dude with a synthesiser. 48 minutes of sadness. NOT very Massive and NOT much Attack ha! Sometimes this list feels like things are included just because they were really popular at the time, but does anyone actually still listen to this album? If I have to pick something: Karmacoma - was kind of alright. Listened: 14/07/2025

☀︎1: 3/5 ☀︎2: 2/5 ☀︎3: 2/5 ☀︎4: 3/5 ☀︎5: 2/5 ☀︎6: 2/5 ☀︎7: 2.5/5? ☀︎8: 2/5 ☀︎9: didn’t expect darth vader ☀︎10: 2/5 j’aime pas sa voix

Snooze fest

(40 known/86 new)

not into it Will I listen to again: 0%

It’s ok. I enjoyed it as ambient background music but I don’t know that I would ever go back to it again.

Kluven. Vill sätta en tvåa. Det här driver mig till vansinne. Det är inte nödvändigtvis dålig musik dock. Men jag hatar det ändå. Så meningslöst. Den usla covern får fälla avgörandet. Två!

honk shoo honk shoo mimimimimi

No thanks

Whatever the hell this is, it’s not for me. Felt like elevator music for a department store I definitely can’t afford to be in.

I thought I really liked Massive Attack. I enjoy the albums "Blue Lines" and "Mezzanine", but this one was just meh. Kinda boring - nothing really stands out. The only memorable thing is that awful cover of "Light My Fire" at the end.

It's not for me

Another weird album from the 90s.

There are so many good songs by Massive Attack. Apparently this album does contain hardly any of them. I guess I just wanted Mezzanine and was disappointed by Protection. Still, Fav Track: Protection.

Despite this album being so far from my style, I really enjoyed how cinematic and hypnotic each song felt. Overall a very nocturnal soundtrack, somehow incohesive yet tied together, as if it were an anthology of different character's experiences of the same night in the city. However, I don't think the inclusion of the live final track adds anything, in fact I feel it takes away from the general feel. Although this isn't an album I see myself reaching for again and again, there are a handful of tracks I would play and recommend to friends.

Weather storm is ok.. but not sure about the other tracks. When you saw an old secret decommissioned biological lab, you went “oh what a shame”, but you also knew it was not going to work at all. That’s probably when I’d like to revisit the album again.

Eh. Felt pretty heartless. Like people making music because they like the idea of being a musician. Felt similar to their last album in that it’s basically the same drum pattern throughout. Uninspired lyrics too imo. I honestly turned down the volume because it was more enjoyable in the distance.

i listened to this yesterday while on a bike ride, and already forgot what i listened to today when reviewing it. i remember it being just fine, but not certainly something i would go back to.

This one failed to grab my attention. Wasn't into many of the songs. The one song Heat Miser with the piano and deep breathing sounds was plain weird. Just wasn't my taste in music. 2 stars.

Yeah fine whatever.

Simply not a fan. Its ok but really nothing good.

Not bad to have on, but not terribly inspired by it either. Also, name of the band does not line up with the sound of the music. 2 or 3? Did not care for the Light My Fire cover.

Disappointed

Ehhhh. Honestly wish there weren't so many guest vocals.

Easy to listen to, but not much there for me.

Lots of “excellent” reviews, this isn’t one of them. Best part was when it ended.

Nice voice not my jams

Another pretty boring 90s electronic album. I'm sure this was cool at the time and influential but it hasn't held up well. It's most just boring at this point.

Why are we so unlucky that we had to suffer through another Massive Attack album? This music is so damn boring. Sure, it has interesting elements, but it mostly just feels like the same few tracks every 3 songs.

I like trip hop, but not this album, it's boring. Even the tracks with really good vocals like Sly have pretty lame backing tracks.

Started off strong with Protection but I didn’t really mesh with any of the other songs.

Really boring and overly mellow

Largely forgettable

Moving on

"it's the House song!"

This sounds like great background music for people with no taste and no identity.

This is going to sound dumb, but I did not expect there to be lyrics on this album. I actually think the singers detract from the tracks, and it would have been better without them? "Heat Miser" was the best song on here and it's the only one without a vocalist.

I was expecting a group called Massive Attack to go harder.

A couple of good songs but mostly filler and a terrible cover of Light my Fire.

I did not enjoy this album. I didn't hate it enough to have that strong of feelings on it, but the few feelings I do have about it aren't overly positive. I get there needs to be a little of a lot of genres on here, but by the 10th trip hop and bajillionth electronic album I think it's enough of those two shitty genres.

dergy 80s space/jungle/spa music. mid but worse than mid. massive attack is the biggest understatement of the century

Not as good as the other one.

Did not vibe with this album and found it pretty cringe that they call their genre trip hop

2.5 - only really liked the singing

Couldn't get into it

eh, alright, a little too much repetitive noise

Little worried about a 90s electronica album after the last one.... Really enjoyed Protection. Karmacoma is more what I was expecting, not my favorite. Overall I'd say like 2.5/5. First song was good but the rest I could honestly go without.

It was OK. Not really my taste

More like "Massive Disappointment" amirite? Honestly did not get the appeal of this or why it's even considered on the 1001 list. This is legit department store music and crappy electronica. 3/10.

Having this album play in the background while you're just.. existing, is not too bad, maybe a bit meh because nothing really happens, but if you were to actively listen to this - it is definitely too much of the same thing over and over again. So 3 stars for passive listening and 2 stars for active listening.

Kind of boring. However, I did learn the collab'd with Craig Armstrong who did the music for Love Actually which was very topical and therefore fun. Too bad it didn't help the album.

I get the whole Trip Hop thing that they're going for, but it really just doesn't appeal to me. The album is just so minimalistic. They are doing some cool things with the beat on some of the songs and some of the sounds are really unique, especially for the time, but the vast majority of this song is so done down that it has a really droney, boring quality to it.

Not as sonically interesting as it could be. It is filled with competent but uninteresting music.

Not terrible, just like mellow house music. Not for work

conclution: edm is better the cover version of light my fire has only 1/100 awesomeness from the original the vocal is sloppy and jim morrison's original version is 100% better 2/5

за состояние транса не некоторых треках - двоечка, а так я конечно продолжу хуесосить электронику

Interesting enough electronic. Goes to some different places throughout the album. I listened to half of this on a train and it fit that vibe well. Not the best thing I've ever heard, won't be coming back, and not overly sure it's needed on the list but it isn't awful.

After a couple of tracks I was questioning why this was on the list. Some okay beats at times. I liked Heat Miser. Light My Fire had me cringing.

This is okay background music and Light My Fire is interesting but it doesn't inspire to hear more. 2 stars or D+ for me.

Had a couple of nicer tracks, but overall dull. Representative of its era, so historical value there, but really hard to see who would listen to this for pleasure. All the songs seem to have been created to be used as bedding tracks for montages in 90s home-improvement and reality shows where the camera cuts at medium pace through shots of houses with square furniture with too much chrome and fake leather.

"Better Things" and "Sly" were really good, and I enjoyed them very much. The rest of the album didn't do anything for me.

Music made for a high school “rave” in someone’s parents’ basement that starts at 6:30 and ends at 9

the album was mostly boring but fine, and then they absolutely butchered Light My Fire

Not sure why there are two Massive Attack albums on "The List". Subdued rhythms, guest singers and electronic sounds. Blue Lines popped up for review in August 2023 and I don't really find any difference between the two albums. Had I died before hearing this, I don't think I would have missed much.

After listening to this, you'll need Protection for your ears. It's a basic, lackluster album full of songs that pass you by as you're reading a book, or trying to fall asleep. Favorite Song: "Light My Fire".

From a band called "massive attack" I expect something totally different. But what you get is well crafted lounge music.🤷‍♂️ (For messing up "Light My Fire" I had to rate them down to zero stars!)

One or two interesting songs but generally this felt like background music and what they did to Light My Fire shouldn’t be allowed.

So boring for how acclaimed it is.

I have to admit prior to starting any part of this I saw the artist name and got nervous it would be some sort of heavy metal scary band, but luckily it wasn’t. I kind of liked it, but I also found it a little blah. I think I would listen again but I can’t identify what exactly speaks out to me? I don’t know.

Massive bore fest

The album opens with a cool and sexy vocal reminiscent of Sade. The rest of the album is similarly cool and at times sexy. The vibe I got was a dark lounge with people sitting on low couches at low tables trying to look cool without appearing to be trying to look cool. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-protection-by-massive?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

ohhh i really wanted to like this . but i didn’t

This is really not the sort of music I can listen to and stay awake. It makes me instantly sleepy like I've been conditioned or something.

it was fine

no strong feelings

Beetje te wacky

I never rode the Bristol Wave. And I’m ok with that.

This is the type of shit playing way too loud at some boutique you get dragged into with like 3 things for sale.

Not bad but not my type of music

not for me.

Not my thing.

Day231 - i really liked the other massive attack album i had earlier but this one missed the mark

Not feeling it

Oof this was one of my least favorite in a while. Just didn’t have anything going for it that entertained me Rating: 1.9

Not for me

Tribal and rythmic, deep and chill. Very ambient, I dig it. But almost wanna call this derivative.

I got a George Michael vibe a lot from this album which is weird. I’ve known of Massive Attack but never really listened to them before. They aren’t bad, though i don’t think I’ll listen to them again.

Not bad

Booooooo

Really didn’t like

This album has great grooves and really sets a mood. I couldn’t help but wishing every song were an instrumental. The vocals are the least inspired part of this album, and not just the playful light my fire outro.

Didn't finish this one, not a classic from Massive Attack, very disappointing.

Triphop has been a surprisingly pleasant listen for me at times. Describing it as “hit or miss” might be accurate, as I’ve generally loved or hated what I’ve heard. However, today’s album seems to land closer to the middle for me, leaving me with a feeling of indifference. Nothing really leaped out as great here, but likewise there was nothing awful either. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did, if I’m being honest. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood for this genre today.

This was bland. The beats were there but it’s like they just didn’t want to add a little bit more flavor to shake the walls of whatever establishment you are listening to it in. I’ve moved on

I would like it a lot more if it was just an instrumental beats album or it was paired with something more engaging.

Boooring

Not my favourite.

Boring

Eh, mediocre. Nice instrumental bits though, like upbeat 'hip' elevator music. Nothing special.

This album doesn’t do it for me, although based on the overall sound I would be open to trying another one at some point

Not a fan

I can’t remember anything about this album

How about no. 2.1 per track.

Meh, this wasn't really for me. It's a bit of a genre-bender, Wikipedia says trip hop, and I'm hearing an electronic / hip-hop / R&B thing, with some instrumental-only songs. I actually liked the first song a decent amount, but very little stood out to me after that. A little uninteresting to me, and I'm not really sure what this music is for exactly. I guess the artist Tricky is involved in Massive Attack, and I wasn't super into his solo album that I got on here either, so this is probably just not my thing. Favorite song: Protection Other: Karmacomam, Sly 4/29/24

This is the second album by Massive Attack on this list. Neither is warranted. The lyrics are bad. Different singers on the songs, most of whom cannot sing. The electronic beats are ok. There is not a consistent style to the songs. Each song needed to be edited down. The cover of Light my Fire was not good.

I liked it. But it's no where near amazing.

I can’t find anything good to say about this at all. Amateurish.

Just not interesting. The songs lack a lot and the one with the breathing was just bad. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Another day, another electronica album. The one positive for me on this is that there is a vocalist over all of the songs, which seems to help with my usual strong dislike of the genre.

Some chill beats on here. Pretty much every song was ruined by the vocals.

Don't really know how to think about this one. Not the biggest fan though - the drum machine comes across strongly and its a little hard to look past. Also nothing was too exciting.

Nice enough chill album, but not in the same league as massive attacks other albums, so doesn’t need to be on the list.

The 90s really wasn’t a good time for music was it

Boring. Shitty. It’s like daytime crime-drama background music.

Worse than the first album I listened to, felt less interesting and more 'plain', still not too bad. 2.5.

Big let down from their first album. I found most of these songs repetitive and tedious. There are a few bright spots like Eurochild, but moving away from the hip hop aspect of their sound hurt this project IMO.

that last song is terrible

Not an album for me, not very interesting Top tracks: Euro Child

Nicht meins

They just took pop and R&B styles that had existed before and added more repeating loops, along with slowing the music down. Might make a good falling asleep to album.

Meh 2.2

Ugh, two from Massive Attack. I hate that this is taking a spot from something amazing like Daft Punk's Discovery. 2/5 just because it was better than the first one I got.

I do not like this at all. And that Doors cover was not good.

Aways find massive attack disappointing. Again they start off with a great album opener and just drop off a cliff from there. I like triphop, so why can't get I on board with these guys?

Not my bag, slow and plodding

DJ/electronic isn't my cup of tea, but I was at least able to get through it.

Interesting sound for the times and probably would have been a better fit for me at a more relaxed, chill time

Goofy, didn’t like it sorry.

Terrible!! So dated

There’s an ominous sense of dread and foreboding that I don’t enjoy. But Protection (the song) is a real earworm, and I do like the James Bond side of trip hop eg Sly.

how do i say this in a nice way. it sounds alright but it sounds so... pretentious and wannabe-something. i really fucking like three though. and light my fire. kind of

Thought I'd like it more, there were only a couple of moments, sounds and songs I enjoyed

Owned this CD, because you were supposed to like Massive Attack - but unlike blue lines, this had no massive bangers. And now it is just dull and completely forgettable

Every day I open this up to a band I’ve never heard before, I excitedly hope that this is going to be the discovery of a band that I’m going to love and start listening to often. And today, like every other day before it that I’ve felt the same, is not that day.

seems interesting instrumentally, the vocal feature on track 1 is pretty bland though, lacks dynamics for me, track is is too repetitive overall, lacks clear and memorable melodies

Should probably give this a 1 for that godawful Light My Fire cover but some of the other stuff was ok.

It was fine.

cool production but all the lyrics and vocals did not tickle my pickle. would give 3 stars if it was instrumental. 2 stars is the best i can do

3.5/10 boring, nothing happens

Impressively boring for a band that released killer albums like Blue Lines or Mezzanine.

I only liked Protection with Tracey Thorn’s added vocals. Not keen on the rest of the album. Not my bag!!

This ain’t it, bruv.

Listened to this while building the praying mantis from the new lego insect collection. This was a Massive Attack album...that's for sure. I somewhat enjoyed Mezzanine...but this one just didn't do much for me. The opening/title track is serviceable trip hop...and probably the best moment of the album. The Weather related track reminded me of some white women drinking wine at an outdoor festival in Orange County. Also, the final track was a really weird and annoying end to the album. I would definitely never say to anyone "oh, you should totally check out Protection." No...they would be pointed to Mezzanine instead.

Had too much caffeine today and this album stressed me out.

This just isn't for me. I didn't care for it. It wasn't offensive though, so it's just a big meh. 2/5

It was kind of nice to listen to. I didn't get much depth and I wasn't intrigued or really entertained.

I'm familiar with other Native Attack albums, not this one. And this one is not really interesting to me. It's not horrible, but I'm seriously wondering why this is part of this 1001 list.

listening to this felt like dragging myself through mud and/or quicksand while it's raining. no thanks.

It was okay

It’s okay, I’m more familiar with Mezzanine and prefer that album over this one. I would listen again.

This does not get me excited.

Dull and discordant. That cover at the end might be the worst thing I've heard in my life.

Incredibly boring!

Very nice lift music.

2/5 Best: Heat Miser Worst: Three

Atmospheric "trip hop". Not the most interesting

It was ok Coffee house music

Pretty boring

Outside of the title track this one completely fell off into nothingness. Hard to even write this review now, the tracks were so instrumentally sparse and unidentifiable from one another melodically. This LP needed a massive injection of actual content, outside the rhythm section it seems nobody else really came in the day this was recorded.

Finally, at long last, a 90s English electronica album. Seriously, how many of these can there possibly be in this book? In all honesty, this is far from the worst one out there. There are clear attempts to make this a cohesive music project, but this genre has such a hard ceiling with me altogether.

This sounds like the slower music that would go into The Matrix. Not a huge fan. It isn't awful but I'm not enjoying it. I was gonna give it a low 3 but after pausing to go do something else and comming back I can't bring myself to listen to the rest of it. This is a high 2/5

perhaps with mad quality speakers and some mdma this would serve well in the background of a house party but its not giving me anything else

I def prefer Mezzanine

Top Three Songs: 1) Better Things 2) Three 3) Heat Miser Bottom Three Songs: 1) Weather Storm 2) Karmacoma 3) Euro Child

Oh yeah an album

Not my thing

Massive attack of crap...

James Brown en The Doors. Een lelijke live mix van "Light My Fire" sluit de tracklist tragisch af.

track 1- eh, Track 2 - mid there is weirdly too much going on in this album. just not my jam

can i get some good music pls

I count myself a general trip-hop fan, so Protection's hour was not wasted. However, Massive Attack's ventures are too weak to compel and the stronger tracks are undermined by surrounding silliness.

Some good tracks but not for me. Very instrumental.

Not much to say besides mid

Really wasn’t it to this, first song was good though.

Too slow. Didn’t do it for me

Jesus this is dull

Massive Attack is a name I've heard of but every track on Protection was new to me. About 50% of the album was okay, but I kept wanting to skip tracks.

Boring.

Coupla good songs, some elevator music.

allright, a bit boring...

Flaccid like the air had been let out of a young ones party balloon, a tear rolls down their eye as the dream of what could have been is sent into the aether, what had been the prospect of a whimsical time spent listening to this album turned into a bit of a dud as no interest was had on my part to consume this. Have already forgotten it.

This attack failed.

The first song is pretty good but the rest is either boring or a little cringe. Definitely personal bias speaking, but I feel trip-hop is a bit over-represented in the sample here

Solid ambient tracks, nothing that blew me away

Boring drivel. I don’t think I needed to hear this before I died.

Some interesting sounds but I'm still in danger of falling asleep while standing. By the time I got to Spying Glass I was ready for the skip button. Once again, as is the case with most modern music, the best song is Better Things. It has a guest female vocalist who sounds great. Then they follow it with a hip-hop talk. I find rap with an English accent sounds even stupider that the usual American talker. Don't get me started on Australian accents (I'm Australian BTW).

I was so happy to hear Tracey Thorn from Everything but the Girl on the first song. She has a voice that gets me every time. This opener is so good, and yet the second song Karmacoma is not my thing. I could barely make it through the track. This is the opposite of what yesterday's record did so well: Announce itself, set expectations and then proceed to deliver on them organically. The trick is to both show difference in each song on the one hand and yet to have enough of a through line, on the other, that the listener experiences a cohesive statement when taking things in as a whole. Massive Attack's Protection does not do this. It has a few good songs scattered about or intermingled with some duds. And then, to top it off, there is that terrible Light My Fire cover at the end. Is this the worst Massive Attack record out there? I don't know because I've never been a major fan. Mezzanine is fantastic though. A true classic. And, it's the record that follows this one.

A relaxing listen, but no saves.

Not enjoyable. Too bad cause they have some good tunes, but they weren't on this album.

more of a beats tape than a rap album 2.5

Not terrible. It’s ok. Pretty forgettable. Gonna leave it a 2, not playlist adds.

Not terrible, but not a big fan either.

I fell asleep the first two time I tried to listen to this.

Preferred the female over the male singer. If just the female singer, album would be a good background music to turn the lights down and snuggle with someone close.

Some interesting tunes but overall was not impressed with this one. Not needed on this list.

En su momento fue algo bastante innovador, pero son discos que, al menos yo, no puedo escuchar más de una vez, y quizás sea por la falta de canción o lo poco de ésta.

This was mediocre, but I liked it more than Blue Lines, still not as much as Mezzanine. Perhaps because I listened to that constantly for awile. Title track was the best but even still I wasn't a huge fan of Tracey Thorn's voice. This album was a mediocre late 70's album that was brought into the 90's with an updated synthesizer, some industrial percussion and looping samples. Why isn't Mezzanine on this list?

This is totally not my jam. Giving it 2 stars because I am reserving 1 star ratings for things I detest.
