I quite like some of the older hip-hop stylings from this era. This one feels a bit underwhelming in terms of the beats though, and the mix is really murky. It feels like it should be way funkier. And it's way too long. What "U" Waitin' "4"? is a good track, despite the MAD punctuation. Good Newz Comin' has something interesting going on. But it's not enough. 2.5 rounded down

Na het hele album geluisterd te hebben zie geen reden waarom je dit zou aanzetten in plaats van De La Soul of A Tribe Called Quest. Het zit een beetje in dezelfde hoek, maar het niveau is toch wel een stukje lager wat mij betreft. Hoogtepunt: Tribe Vibes. Die beat is z'n tijd wel een flink stuk vooruit. Sowieso zitten de wat meer interessante nummers meer richting in het einde. Een uur was sowieso te lang voor wat het te bieden heeft en eigenlijk kun je de eerste 8 nummers gerust overslaan. 2e helft van het album is best leuk en interessant, eerste helft totaal niet. Ik ben bang dat ik op een dag een berichtje krijg van iemand die zegt dat ie dit veel liever heeft dan Kendrick Lamar.

Tja... niet echt indrukwekkend te noemen, maar sommige beats waren best aardig.

I didn't listen to the whole thing, but heard enough. Not my cup of tea. Specifically, none of the Jungleos had a voice that really made me lean in. I'm picky like that. Also, it's a little discombobulating to have a song like "Black Woman" and "U Make Me Sweat" on the same record. One seems to praise women, the other seems to catalog the ways in which the vocalist is put off by them existing. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

About as inoffensive as 'The Chronic' by 'Dr' Dre (not a real doctor) is offensive. It is nice to hear some more of the 80s wholesome hip hop, in a similar vein to De La Soul. Musically, it lacks variety and it is very ' hi, my name's Louis', but is overall an enjoyable, sleepy listen. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Beyond This World Date listened: 01/08/23

Not a bad album by any means, but it just shows how much hip-hop has developed since the 80s (and how diverse it has become nowadays). The beats are all very dated and samey and the flows and delivery are just the same all the way through. Nothing too exciting lyrically or emotively on here either, and at a full hour it’s just way too long for what it is

This is unflavored hip hop. Just a slab of tofu for the ears. Way too simple to be 60 minutes long. I was so over it by the third song, but they just kept going and going with the same flows, same beats and same lyrics. Curses. Foiled again.

Honestly I didn’t completely hate this album- however I wasn’t a fan of the actual rapping, which was a large majority of it. I understand why this could be labeled influential but not in my book.

Not too bad, don't mind that late 80s sound, but the lyrics are pretty cringey. I've mentioned before that you can't really turn an angry genre like rap into something with positive themes, at least not easily. At point I heard a nursery rhyme chorus, and the "mother Africa" nonsense is just cheesy and silly. I live in a colony and I wouldn't ever think of Europe as some kind of "motherland", and I roll my eyes at anyone who does. 2/5.

És clar que el pop i el rock tenen la seva proporció més que adequada, però posats a donar tanta preponderància a un génere com el hip hop, es podria haver repartir més amb altres d'igualment importants com el jazz, metal r&b/soul, country... que queden clarament subrepresentats. Being such a young genre of music, Hip-Hop tends to be heavily era-dependent. This album arrived during the early years and it sounds like it. The rhyme schemes are simple. The flow is plodding. Nothing about this transcends. I’m a Hip-Hop fan, but this shouldn’t be an entry on this list ahead of: “Paid in Full” by Erik B and Rakim “ATLiens” by OutKast “Mecca and the Soul Brother” by Pete Rock and CL Smooth …and many more.

A few fun tracks, but a lot of stuff that just doesn't stand out much from its contemporaries.

Best Song: Doin' Our Own Dang. The female vocals were more interesting than anything else on the album. Worst Song: Feelin' Alright. Scatting is something that can work really well if used sparingly. It just goes on too long here. Overall: The backing house-style instrumentals are nice. It's got a dance-y groove. Clearly influential, but hip hop aesthetics have changed so much since this era, so it is really difficult to listen to these simple and repetitive flows and rhyming patterns and get excited. I think it's the over-enunciation of each syllable that really kills it for me.

I could only stomach 8 songs.

Поэтому альбом заслуживает внимания как некое историческое событие и один из пионеров жанра, но сейчас звучит уже слишком устаревше даже на фоне олдскула.

The Jungle Brothers walked so that De La Soul could run. Sounds a bit dated. I got this album on the day a new Orville Peck album dropped, and apparently I have a thing for gay, masked country singers who sound like Elvis. So this never stood a chance with me.

Oldschool Hip Hop

Not the worst hip-hop album ever, but also not even close to converting me into the genre

cool and fun, but not really my cup of tea. I found it hard to tell songs apart at times. Many of the songs were much too repetitive for my taste; just a simple backing track looped over and over. cool cover art. Lyrically it was fun but musically it didn't do much for me. Favorite lyric was about columbus thinking the world was a square.

An hour-long album was a bad call here. You trim off the twenty minutes of fat that is monotonous beats and shallow rhymes, you'd have something truly tight.

Not super great! There's some fun tracks, and it certainly starts out good enough. But it's just too long, and there are some songs that definitely should've been cut. If it were shorter and some of the bad songs were cut, it'd be a bit better, but I still don't think it'd be great or anything. I'm honestly not sure if this deserved to be on the list.

Vähän leppoisampaa menoa kuin aiemmat 80-90 -luvun taitteen rapteokset listalla. Taustamusiikkina meni ihan mukavasti mutta eipä tästä oikein mitään mitään jäänyt mieleen parilla kuuntelukerralla. Kovasti oli ylimittainen eikä jaksanut pitää otteessaan.

Definitely a poor man's Wu Tang with less experienced rhythms. The lyrics are a bit on the childish side as well though it is a fun album. Is it a rap album I could have lived my life without hearing? Sure, so many others that should be ahead of this specific album.

Not my kind of thing..

Yet another hip hop album over an hour long. No need for it in my opinion. I quite liked how this was a very positive and upbeat sounding record in comparison to a lot of rap. It's got a cool groove and at times is quite danceable. 'Wat U Waitin' 4' being the best here. The beat is heavy on the funky, foot tapping bass. The second half of 'Good New Comin'' is really good too. It's got a spritely guitar solo with a lovely, catchy rhythm guitar too. 'Doin' Our Own Dang' is another highlight, again, because of the beat. This time it's a funky piano and bass combo. The actual rapping didn't really impress me or grab my attention. It's good but not amazing. Overall the beats feel very plain and the tracks really run together a lot and I was bored for most of this. There's some upbeat funk, but I want more! Three tracks I enjoyed out of sixteen isn't good enough I'm afraid.

This was a bit of a snooze. The beats were all the same sounding and the lyrics were a chore to sit through. I'm not saying I want rap to be about thug life. But I do want it, and all music, to have some emotional heft.

The moment I saw it’s hip hop from the eighties I had very low expectations… and after listening to the music I was vindicated. I mean, I’m no huge hip hop fan, but I can enjoy a lot of it, and really like some stuff like The Roots, Kanye or Dead Prez. Thing is about old school hip hop is that you usually get a very basic drum loop, a rapper that would be considered no good by modern standards, and maybe some basic loop sample. This is what we get here. It’s all very basic and dull. I can accept that it’s historically and culturally significant, and it could be a ton of fun to dance to in a party, but just as listening material it’s not enough.

The Good: There are lions in the jungle… The Bad: The lion hasn’t been able to eat anything for a while, and it’s getting hungry… The Ugly: I guess the mess the lion will leave behind once he’s able to kill something… Yes, as you can tell, there isn’t much positive I can say about this album. I have had to sit through 4 hip-hop albums this week, and thought this one isn’t the worst of them all, my level of irritation is. So please, if you happen to belong to the fan club of Jungle Brothers, don’t cry about my low score… cry about the poor family of whomever it was that the lion ate! 1*

Alle Songs mit „U“, mit Apostroph- oder Gänsefüßchen sind schlicht schlecht und alle anderen noch schlechter. Es ist HipHop Rap mit nerviger Stimme und sinnlosen Bongos. Diese Musik wäre 1989 möglicherweise die Rettung der Stasi-PR Abteilung vor dem Mauerfall gewesen … so kann ich nur zur Aufnahme im 1-Star Club gratulieren.

Það tók þvílíkt langan tíma að komast í gegnum þessa plötu. Ég setti oft á pásu og næst þegar ég ætlaði að halda áfram var staðsetningin sem ég var á horfin og ég hafði ekki hugmynd um hvað ég var búinn að hlusta á því þetta var meira og minna allt sama leiðinlega lagið.
