While this is more of a 4.5 star album, it broke my heart to consider giving it only 4. Maybe it isn't perfect, but it's real close. This is some masterful funk and soul. Beautiful when it needs to me, but groovy as hell all the way through. A great listen that I'd be happy to put back on as soon as it ends.

The songs are strong enough; The tags-not-skits approach to soundtrack recording make this one slick package. "Cute" feels dismissive but otherwise accurate to my feelings. Earth, Wind & Fire don't maintain particularly high energy but have no need to: The leisure on several tracks is just right.

Jazzy, funky, life affirming music. EWF occupies a very specific niche in music that's all their own, one of positivity and joy, delivered on the waves of a masterful groove. Some 70s prog harmony in here as well as soul, disco, spoken word/rap/improve (which was hilariously corny) and instrumentals. Not bad.

Shining Star, wow funky as f@~K, what a way to introduce a record. Didn't enjoy the syrupy slower songs as much as the higher tempo pieces. However its a joyful record from these icons. I think they go onto make even better records than this, such as "I Am" and "all N all"

I already know and love much of this, but it's a little too noodley and indulgent to be a whole package.

I really liked that the opening almost made me dance, it was really funny, as the album continues with that sound all along. I’ve always had an admiration for Earth, Wind & Fire for their ability to fuse mind blowing musicianship with gargantuan pop hits (“September”, “Boogie Wonderland”, that Beatles cover…… you know, whatever else). I’d heard “That’s the Way of the World” once before, and let it wash over me a little. Coming back to it now, in amongst the swamp of other albums included on the 1001 list, it shines all the brighter. The first jolting, goosebumps-worthy moment comes halfway through the first verse of “Shining Star”, when Philip Bailey glides up into his signature, silky smooth falsetto. That alone is enough to reveal we’re in the presence of greatness, and then seconds later, the harmonies come in and we reach the chorus. All doubts buried in the Earth, blown away in the Wind and ravaged in the Fire. Moving forwards, things settle into a rhythm of alternating soul ballads with more upbeat, funk or world-influenced offerings: that’s the way of “That’s the Way of the World”. Arguably, the best example of each comes at the start of the album, with its two singles: “Shining Star”’s slick soul-funk and the absolutely gorgeous “That’s the Way of the World”. Luscious falsetto vocals, warm rhythm guitar, strings and glockenspiel underscoring… this title track has it all. While we don’t reach quite the same peak again, there are many more highlights to be found in this set. “Happy Feelin’” is exuberant and irresistible, with my new favourite falsetto singalong (“FEEEEEEE-eeeeelin”) and perhaps the most euphoric kalimba (I think?) committed to tape. “Africano” is also an unexpected treat: instrumental fusion-y bliss, with stunning performances all round. The rest is good (“Reasons”, “Yearnin’ Learning”) to middling: “All About Love (First Impression)” is a softly stirring slow jam, but doesn’t hit on the same level as most of the others here. All in all, though, it’s a supremely groovy album. Summer’s here, and the time is right for dancing to these beats.

Some very cool funky vibes. Africano smashes hard. Prefer the up tempo songs over the ballads. Will check out more of EW&F. More 70s funk please.

Starts off strong with 'Shining Star', and 'Africano' was a surprising delight! But the album generally contains more of the velvety smooth soul side of EW&F than the funky, disco sound that I prefer. Insane vocals though.

I was getting ready to get groovy with Earth, Wind & Fire. But while I still mostly enjoyed this record I never truly felt the legendary groove of EWF. The instrumentation is (of course) great, their are some funky tracks and those vocals rarely fail to deliver. There just seem to be something amiss. A lack of soul (this is a soundtrack, keep in mind)? A lack of that one big, phenomenal hit EWF are known to deliver? Maybe it’s the overall lack of cohesion as the band delivers soul, jazzy grooves, funk and African rhythms all in one? Whatever it is I just don’t feel that impressed.

They really are the real deal - complex, surprising music but also catchy, fun and lively. I wish every band was so spectacular!

EW&F are dynamite for sure. First two tracks are stand outs but I'm a sucker for good soul funk. What a positive bunch, live would be insane.

Genres: Soul, funk, progressive soul Formed: Chicago in 1969 Run time: 8 songs, 38 min 35 sec The lyrics are simple and straight forward. Add that to a funky back-beat and you’ve got some great funk. The harmonies are excellent and the contrast in voices between Bailey's falsetto and Maurice's baritone add great depth to the songs. I loved the super funky instrumental track “Africano” and "That's the Way of the World". I could imagine sitting in the sun with a drink and listening to this album, while contemplating the meaning of life. Very relaxing and easy on the hearing. I don’t think I’ll listen again, but I will check out a best of Earth, Wind & Fire. My Rating: ***

A really excellent record. Not exactly 'my thing' but quite an impressive sound and musicianship, and def if I was looking for something groovy this would be a great pick.

Heading into this album, the only Earth, Wind & Fire songs that I was familiar with were "Shining Star" and "September" (shoutout 'Superbad' and Demi Adejuyigbe). Funk and soul music are genres that I don't gravitate towards very often, but I thought this was a great album. The songs were all fun to listen to, and I think this album is a standout of funk and soul. As the late seventies were approaching, it feels like a lot of bands that were trying to embrace funk, soul, and eventually disco, didn't have a lot that set them apart from the crowd. However, Earth, Wind & Fire really were in a class of their own, and I think a lot of that is due to Philip Bailey's vocals (for what it's worth, it's become a huge pet peeve of mine that "Easy Lover" is often touted as a Phil Collins song, when it appeared on Philip Bailey's album. I love Phil, but that's a Philip Bailey song that happens to feature Phil Collins). Even though Philip Bailey's vocals are great, the band still finds a way to let the instruments pack a punch when they need to. I love that this album had some longer songs, especially the synth-heavy outro of "All About Love." This is a great album, and a master class on soul and funk.

Making this unemployed bum work awfully hard.... Just absolutely too funky for me, but I was inspired by the youtube comments. There are some hard-core EWF fans out there. My nerves are fried but if I have to pick a favorite it would be Africano, that was some serious Jazz flute.

The first few songs, I heard back in the day, and I really liked, the rest of the songs on the album were very hard to listen too ... sounds like just noise to me.

Fantastic album

What's not to love about EWaF? Funky grooves, great ballads, top musicianship... Soul in the realist sense. Love this record, but it is clearly of an era so I'm not sure it lives up to the legend of their reputation.

The funk is funky (I think that's a good thing!). The highlights for me are the incredible drum and bass going on here, hard to miss. There's also some fantastic brass in some of the songs that I think adds some extra punch.

The opening 17 seconds of "Shining Star" have more relaxed confidence than I've felt in my entire life.

I mean, it's a classic. Smooth, prevalent bass and high-pitched harmony galore. It's ideal background music. Every track is a head bopper because it's groovy, baby. How could I not realise that the intro to "Africano" is sampled in the intro to the "I'm a Celeb" theme tune?! Good lord.

2.5, way more meh than I was expecting

A great disco funk soul album by one of the best soul bands. This album has three amazing songs on it and only one kinda bad song which is really just an instrumental track. It has great replay value. The popular songs, reasons and shining star, stand out far and above as they are timeless hits. Earth Wind and Fire had a great ability to use jazzy instrumentals to keep a funky sound while having impeccable vocals. This is a great listen. 8.2/10

All I can say is that I bet a whole lot of people have gotten laid as a result of some of these smooth and sexy sounds!

You can hear the joy in this record. It's crazy how great this sounds. Not exactly my style of music, but I've heard parts of this record many times over the years. It was nice to listen to the whole thing.

One of many classic EWF albums. There is a lot of great music on the first five EWF albums. Head to the Sky is also 5 stars for instance and striongly commendable, but this one (album number 6) is the first one that is really perfect from beginning -> end. Soul / funk music combined with proper, high-quality song-writing played very skilfully.

Overall an enjoyable album, with many highs but also some lows, especially in the high pitched vocal department.

Perfect album when you’re in a funk. Every song peaked my interest and made me want to get up and move. Cleaned my house to it and appreciated the dynamic complexity.

Really enjoyed this. The whole album from front to back was engaging and really fun. Funky bass lines and a really cool tone on the guitar mix perfectly with well timed horns and keys. There are times where I wish the drums demanded your attention, but I'm nitpicking. This album makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn't even alive. This was my first time listening to this and I'll come back to it regularly. Favorite track - Shining Star Least favorite track - See the Light

I've always been a big fan of 70's soul/funk (stevie wonder is my favorite artist of all time), but I've never checked out a full album from Earth Wind & Fire. I went into this thinking it would get a solid 4 stars from me but there's literally nothing to dislike about these songs. It's perfect, the recording is pristine without sounding over-produced or flat, the songs have personality and stick out from the others, and there's never a dull moment. I really love this album and I'm glad it came on rotation.

Some classics, some jammers, all around fantastic album.

I can almost smell my grandmother's cooking when I listen to this album. I've heard all of these songs 10,000 times just by simply growing up around my family and being black, really. Initially, I didn't want to give this album 5 stars because this isn't something I regularly come and listen to, but then again, I never NEED to come find this album to hear it throughout the year. You'll kinda just hear these songs everywhere as long as you exist on planet earth and don't live under a rock. Earth, Wind & Fire is a ubiquitous part of world musical culture.

Pretty stoked to have this one come up in my rotation. I'm familiar with Earth, Wind & Fire as an entity and know the hits, but I've never actually done a deep dive. The only song I knew from this one going in was "Shining Star" - which isn't to say I hadn't heard any of the others - I'm sure I've heard more than a few, but not necessarily been aware or paying attention! "That's the Way of the World" is some pretty epic groove... "Shining Star" may be the big well-known single here, but "Happy Feelin'" is a gawd dayum jam! Pumping positivity with a funk workout - I could listen to this over and over again. And probably will for a bit once this album's over. "All About Love (First Impression)" feels somewhat forgettable at first, but the spoken word breakdown pulled me all the way back in and the psychedelic outro is pretty damn tasty! A lot of times slow jams can take awhile for me to come around to, but this got me on board. And while I may be listening digitally right now, it's a great way to close a side. ...and "Yernin' Learnin'" is a great way to open a side! We've only just begun side two and I'm ready to dig deeper into the catalogue - something I should have done a long time ago already "Reasons" may be the song least likely for me to throw on here, but I do love that it comes off as a slow jam love song and really isn't. "AFRICANO," FUnK YEAH! Another one I could play all day and be mighty pleased. "See the Light" is a nice little wind down to the whole affair. Especially the outro. This is a very solid four-star album for me - it doesn't grab me the whole way through but it sure does for most of it, in so many great ways. Glad to finally have kickstarted a look into the Earth, Wind & Fire catalogue and definitely look forward to more. ​

Love me a tight horn section, and I was surprised how often the keyboard playing and melodic percussion on this album stood out as well. The big funk/soul groups don't always do it for me, but I liked this entire album.

Why do I feel that a compilation from this band (ideally including *both* their famous cuts and lesser known, more stylistically varied endeavors) will always be more pleasurable than any single LP they ever released? Maybe it's a lack of knowledge about disco or funk history on my part, admittedly. But listening to *That's The Way of The World*, I can't help shake that feeling (while shaking my ass and legs on the dancefloor as well--I'm not saying this record fails in that area, by the way: all I'm saying is that it is just *one* little piece from a far larger puzzle). At least, *That's The Way Of The World* is a nice tribute to the band's spotless musicianship. But, as I've just suggested, it's not a tribute to Earth Wind And Fire as timeless hitmakers. Let's be honest for one second--those "September", "Let's Groove", and "Boogie Wonderland" singles are what popular consciousness automatically associates the Earth Wind And Fire name with. And none of them are in this LP. Of course, that doesn't mean the latter is bad on its own. The two tracks closing the proceedings, "Africano" and "See The Light" have mean fusion grooves, with exciting solos in them (on a saxophone for the first of those tracks, and on synths for the second). But everything else is a little too predictable, maybe, especially the somewhat cheesy ballads (the title track, "All About Love" and "Reasons"). And if the whole offering is fun overall, it's far from sounding "essential" to me. Last-minute update: I've just learned that the Earth Wind And Fire drummer passed away today, of all days. I suspect it was actually not a coincidence this record popped up in the app this morning (it wouldn't be the first time such fake 'coincidences' happen in here). I'm not changing a word from my review, though. I have already praised both the band's musicianship and their timeless hits in it, even if the album itself wasn't really my thing. Podiums and best-of-lists are not so important anyway. What's important is to use those opportunities to celebrate good music of all kinds. Rest in peace (or in power), Fred White. We start the album of with a classic, Shining star. A banger for sure but nothing to special to my ear. . It did get me thinking now that I'm listening to the song instead of just getting jiggy with it. The ending of Shining Star flows beautifully into the following song. That's the Way of the World, honestly zoned out for 70% of the song

Shining Star is uber funk and I like the review suggesting that the entire album is “make-out music of the gods”. I can get down with that.

The funk here is absolutely top shelf. Great jazz solos too. The slow jams are gorgeous, though probably a bit too cheesy for me to replay often. “See the Light” is tremendous though! Definitely has that cheese but it’s big and dramatic and features some great playing!

Killer album, unfortunately a bit on the shorter end. "Shining Star" "That's the Way of the World" "Reasons" are all slammers. Earth Wind & Fire are always a band that I can put on in any mood, any setting, and enjoy it. Going out with friends? Put on "September" and start grooving while you are getting ready. Romantic night in with your boo? Put on any album. Raging with friends into the early morning? Put on "September" again and scream your lungs out. This album maintains that effect- these songs I could play anytime, anywhere.

Great balance of dance numbers, jazz and soul. I think this is a fun album.

It was fine, not quite what I want or expect from EWF. I guess their hits are hits for a reason.the falsetto was too much.

Siendo el sexto álbum de la multitudinaria banda proveniente de Chicago, nos presenta una sabrosa mezcla de soul, con funk y disco. Pareciera que lo único que no quedaba en su lugar eran algunos tramos poco convencionales y haciendo que se perdiera el ritmo del disco. Aunque suela ir en contra de la corriente, en este trabajo creo que resultan mejor parados y más sólidos los temas más simples en comparación a los que tuvieron un esfuezo extra en su composición. Es cautivante la energía de los temas más movidos, que por ahí se pierde en las canciones más melódicas.

EW&F have about as much vocal talent as anyone else, and I especially like Phillip Bailey's voice, think he's one of the best singers ever, the projection he gets in that super-high register is just absurd. And I basically like all the up-tempo tracks on this CD ("Shining Star", "Happy Feelin'" and "Yearnin' Learnin'"), plus the ballads that allow Bailey to take over (that's really just the title track - he's lead on "Reasons" but doesn't turn in such a great performance). But the other ballads don't grab me, and it's really a pretty ballad-heavy CD. The 2nd half in particular is pretty light. Fine listen though, would put it on again.

I’d love to be able to give Earth, Wind & Fire full marks but this album is not quite there for me. Really strong start but it needs another outstanding song on the second side to push it over the edge. Still a great funky pre-disco soul album though. 🌍 🌬 🔥

Super funky, super stylish, easy listening and uplifting music. Deserving of a 4 stars for me. Very cool instrumental solos and effects. Simple yet effective. You can't stay sad listening to this ahaha. It's a good time!

Robert a une nouvelle fois gâché la fête en libérant l'album d'un groupe mythique dépourvu d'un quelconque tube. À ce sujet, je voulais vous partager la grosse boulette que j'ai commise dans le cadre de mon activité professionnelle. Vous savez déjà que j'ai pour habitude d'envoyer quelques minutes après mon réveil un courriel de menace à Robert, c'est l'une des étapes qui composent ma routine matinale. Pourtant, hier matin, je n'obtins pas l'avis de lecture qui suit généralement l'envoi de celui-ci. Après vérification, il s'avéra que je l'avais en fait envoyé à mon client le plus important, également appelé Robert. Ce dernier, se rendant compte de mon erreur et voyant bien que les menaces en question étaient destinées à Robert Dimery et non à lui-même, transmit ledit mail et le vrai Robert en accusa bonne réception quelques minutes plus tard. Une belle frayeur mais un dénouement heureusement sans conséquence.

Nous nous sommes aujourd'hui pointés, mon camarade d'écoute robpanière et moi-même, au domicile de Robert pour célébrer le 600ème album du générateur. Cependant, lorsque la femme de Robert nous ouvrit la porte, aucune musique ne s'échappait de la pièce à vivre. Aucun invité ne semblait présent, et la femme de Robert nous fit comprendre que la soirée était hier soir, et que Robert n'était actuellement pas présent à son domicile. Je compris rapidement ce qu'il s'était passé: cet imbécile de rob s'était trompé de date pour la célébration du 600ème album, puisque l'album du jour était en fait le 601ème. Malgré la deception, nous avons décidé de ne pas repartir les mains vides, et avons soigneusement passé à tabac la compagne de Robert, en guise de protestation contre la série absolument ignoble offerte par Robert récemment.

Not for me

‘TTWOTW’ is mostly great, full of excellent soul funk cuts in ‘Shining Star’, ‘Yearnin’ Learnin’, ‘Happy Feelin’’ and ‘Africano’. The obligatory EWF ballads are also present, one of which ‘All About Love (First Impression)’ is sappier than usual, and a bit of a momentum killer. Paradoxically though, ‘Reasons’ the other main ballad is excellent. (As an aside check out the live version of ‘Reasons’ on the ‘Gratitude’ album if you get a chance. It’s as good, if not better than the studio version found here). Mostly though, I like listening to ‘TTWOTW’ for all the times Maurice White growls ‘Yowww!!’ throughout the album. Its surprisingly often, and if there was a drinking game, and I had a shot for every time he sang it, I’d be shitfaced by the end of the fourth song.

Oh, well, this is easy-to-listen-to 70s soul; it might have been a revelation in its time, but in hindsight it's nothing special. Just a good soul album. 3/5

Good, but a little too slow for my tastes. Wanted more uptempo stuff like the opening track.

A very pleasant surprise as it’s not my usual taste but I really enjoyed it, interesting turn on last three songs getting more exotic. Overall a very good time to listen too

The Cover: This poses are sick. Should be used on a Jojo cover. Shining Star: Nice groove, vocals and guitar. Nice end to the track too. That's the way of the World: Enjoyable chill track, instrumentals go crazy. Well balanced. Happy Feelin': More up beat track. Very energetic and danceable. The bass is ear-grabbing. So are the vocals. Nice track 3 Tracks in: Well paced and soulful. All about love: Although I'm not the biggest fan of big love songs, this is a surprisingly good long track. All elements contribute to this. Good monolog and outro. (Bell Hooks better tho) Yearnin' Learnin': This piano is soo nice. Shorter track, well, it felt shorter since it has a faster pace compared to other tracks. Nice mensage. 5 Tracks in: This is such a good expirience so far. Not a single miss or skip. Reasons: Omg this is groovy. Good everything (instruments, vocals, pace, etc) Fav so far. Africano: Horns, precussion, the litle flute in he beginning, damn. Good ahh instrumental track. See the Light: The intro seems to have some brazilian influence, and the rest reminds me of japonese city pop (prob influenced it?). Good closing track. Overall: 8,5/10 first listen. Amazing album.

Had me dancing during work! Not all the songs are winners, but overall I enjoyed it.

You could get away with playing this album at your wedding reception and not have to pay the DJ for forty minutes.

Really enjoyed this apart from tracks #4 and 8, was just a bit lukewarm on those but they might be growers. Nice surprise as I only knew a couple of songs from this band. Soundtracked a chilly and wet trip to and from Galway, one listen each way. Also, top notch cover photo!

Delicious, smooth and soothing album! I love music like this album and I think it has stood the test of time far better than other genres. Some of the slow ones are a little cheesy.

Is Justin Timberlake on this ... ? Maybe in the background of Way of the World ... Go ahead, listen for it, you'll hear him... This album makes me think of one of those late '70s Lincoln Town Cars that'll hold all your friends but won't fit into your garage. How big is EW&F, anyhow? Too big for my Prius, that's for sure. Lots of sounds coming off of this album, the falsetto voices from every direction are maddening but the horns and Love Boat keyboards somehow make up for it. I like the bass lines in some of the duds, but all tallied, this was about what I expected from this album, that is to say outdated and a relic of the past that won't get much more play from me.

I like EW&F just fine. They don't bug me. They don't excite me particularly. Hence 3 stars.

"Shining Star" is still great, but nothing else comes anywhere close to that level.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I discovered I really hate when they realize they never talk at us about love and then do so. Also jazz flute.

The opening of the album is funky bass lovin’ fun. You got the horns, drums, synthesizers, and the list goes on. It feels like they threw the kitchen sink at this album instrumentally. Then we get to All About Love (First Impression) where I get completely lost. The ending is a bizarre departure. It doesn’t go too far off the rails because Yearnin’ Learnin’ and Reasons bring it back. But there is too much improv-esque exploration in the last two tracks. Verdine White’s bass deserves recognition though.

I enjoyed the first half of this album a lot more than the second half. But all songs were happy and uplifting, which definitely has its place. Overall a good album.

Disco - smooth mix of Uptempo grooves and low tempo slow dancing love songs

This feels like a big part of the soundtrack to my early childhood, I think because this was the sort of thing everyone seemed to agree was pretty good at the time. This is what you’d expect to hear in someone’s car or on TV as an example of modern music. It has one great song in Shining Star. Plus Reasons and Africano are pretty solid. Otherwise super-polished and inoffensive.

Pretty good songs

According to a lot of fans (and also the 1001-album-list) the best of Earth, Wind & Fire. With delicious funky songs like "Shining Star" and "Yearnin', Learnin'", ballads like "That's the Way of the World" and "All About Love", and jazzy groove songs like "Africano," I can fully understand why this would be the case. On the other hand there's also songs like "Reasons"; the disco ballads style with those abnormally high-pitched vocals, those sterile strings and horns. All in all, a really funky and soulful album. It's just not fully the thing for me.

It’s fine. Not really into R&B and Soul so it’s no surprise to me that this album didn’t quite resonate with me. I didn’t love it but it also didn’t annoy me, easy enough listen, Yearnin’ Learnin’ stood out as my favourite with the funky vibes. Africano was pretty fun too with great percussion work. 3/5

Its an enjoyable album - I like it.

it was alright, i liked the jazz but overall there wasn't a song that stuck out for me.

Elementary school dance vibes. Had a sudden urge to ask my wife to dance, but inexplicably was too shy and nervous to go through with it. Oh well, maybe next album.

Smooth funky goodness

Looks decent enough… The album opens with shining star a groovy short funky song, great opener! It flows perfectly into that’s the way of the world it’s a much slower track that feels like the comedown of the first song, still equally as brilliant though! Happy feelin’ is a small step down but only lyrically, instrumentally this song is still super appealing a rampaging funk jam. Side one ends with a very impactful ballad with all about love it’s a very fitting way to end side one and the complete opposite to the riot that the last song was. Yearnin’ learnin’ starts off side two with quite a weak piano/ bass track I think maybe it’s his vocals they’re just too wired. Reasons is cool, not necessarily my kinda thing but it’s fitting for the album. The penultimate track africano is a cool instrumental that starts off all calm then jumps into your face 5 minutes may be a bit too long for an instrumental but I can cope. See the light picks up from the tribal sound of the last song into a fairly decent closer but I don’t think it feels like the end of a project. This is very front loaded but very enjoyable 4/5.

Can not beat a bit of feel good funk

One of the big positives of this project has been introducing me to a lot of soul that I was only vaguely aware of before and have discovered to be fantastic. This isn't one of those albums. This is bland, uninteresting, easy listening dreck.

really funky album!

My years working at Walgreens really poisoned the well for the first couple of songs here, which then completely tanked my ability to enjoy this. Maybe it's actually good. Who knows? Certainly not me.

Mostly great. Obvious classics that have stood the test of time including Reasons and Shining Star. They have a very unique sound.
