Reviews (page 6 of 13)
I'm far too familiar with the first side of this album; really there was no point listening to it except for the sake of completionism. The feeling I have is I have simply listened to these songs too much, they don't impress me(I'm trying to avoid the cliched 'they don't hit the same' wording, but it rings true) the way they used to. But back in the day (around 3, 4 years ago?) I really used to enjoy these songs, especially See no evil. Objectively, I know they are very good. The second side was more new to me because I never bothered checking these out properly before. Much more enjoyable, novel experience. "Guiding light" was very pretty and "Torn curtain" had some tasty guitar on it. Ultimately, this album has been influential as hell on artists. A must for any lovers of art rock (to me, art rock is sweet sounding guitar licks). Notably, Franz Ferdinand's song 40' is very very Television-sounding. And that's a great tune! These days, I'm more interested in Television's songs from the 'Adventure' and 'Television' albums. They are rather underrated and deserve more appreciation.
I'm only given it a four.
Guitar tone is kinda shit sometimes. Production OK. Compositions are great. Torn & Marquee Moon excellent tracks. Overall great blend of punk, prog and psychedelia.
I mean it has one of the greatest +10m songs of all time. Rest of the album is great.
I'm very glad they're not British
Awesome album. Elevation had me thinking my shit was skipping. Super interesting edit and chorus
6/19/25. Celebrating Juneteenth with a white rock band! However, I enjoyed their sound, for this specific era of punk-ish music the instrumentation was engaging, and I loved the guitar work. Some of the songs are long, but you don't notice. Enjoyable listen!
The title track is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. What an absolute masterpiece that song is. Put that track on a list of 100 songs you should hear before you die. In revisiting the album I’m surprised to find myself giving it 4 instead of 5. It’s a classic and a great record without question, but maybe it’s just that outside of Guiding Light (a really good song), there’s not much that’s super memorable to me. That may be because of how good and epic Marquee Moon the song is, but it’s how I feel. Still an awesome record overall.
I love the title track. The rest is pretty good.
Superb stuff.
pretty goated sounding for a record from the 70s
Molto simili agli Strokes
Great album 👌
interesting - nice to hear what what was going on in NYC
83% Best: See No Evil; Friction; Marquee Moon; Torn Curtain Must-Hear? Sure
I like it Really enjoy it. The drums and the lyrics we're amazing.
Enjoyable listen.
Man, I'm a sucker for a 10 minute epic.
Glam rock Songs at it best! KISS essentials. Great pop-rock gems inside the album ! I really enjoyed this one
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the guitar riffs and drums in this one
This album must've rocked people's socks in the 1970s, it sounds so modern. The lead singer's vocals are mildly annoying but overall the album is enjoyable. Marquee Moon is an all-timer, especially 9min in when you think it's wrapped up and they come back in with the kick drum. Overall the album sounds like an earlier version of the strokes, and as a huge strokes fan I have to give this a 4, but I can see myself rounding down to a 3 on a different day
Pretty solid. Marquee Moon is very good. I feel like I should have more to say, but the albums all kind of blur together. Uhhh. vocals are pleasantly grating without overdoing. Instrumentation is simple yet effective. Good stuff. Not sure if any of these songs stand out in a big way other than the title track, but cumulatively its a solid album. 3.5 rounding up
this was nice, it was weird and complicated and interesting. an album that gets better with each listen I think
Very much in line with the Velvet Underground, but tighter, hookier, more refined. More confident and not so sad, either. The thing executing on all cylinders as the thing as opposed to trying to bring the thing into existence. Too cool to love though? Maybe a tiny bit but not too much. Do I feel it in my guts? Yeah. Sometimes you don't want to be sad, just punk. Bet their live shows kicked ass. Fades quite a bit at the end but still rocks. 4.0
I first listened to this album years ago based on a recommendation from a friend. I enjoyed it much more this time and am impressed by how well it's put together. 4/5
Okaaay!! I really like this actually. This is a very cool sound. Standout songs: Venus Torn Curtain
I had to get into the sound of this album for a while, but at the third song it clicked more with me. I really liked the drums throughout the album and the title track is a banger. Very ahead of its time. Also, this album sounds exactly like how the cover looks.
An album to make you feel empty and to never trust anyone, favorite song Venus imo cause it was the song where I got the story with the least amount of help from ChatGPT and found it really clever portraying how he fell into the arms of Aphrodite which is usually portrayed without arms given this idea of even thoe he was falling for someone that seemed “attractive” he was never caught by her. Lastly instrumentally the best part is when he has those 2 soloes
Hated the first two songs but man the title track is amazing.
the title track is really good, the rest range from good to fine
Dude's voice reminds me of the Violent Femmes. I enjoyed this.
Way ahead of their time.
Wow. Is this emo/indie? Either way, my kinda lane. Can hear a hint of INTERPOL, in songs like Marquee Moon and Friction. The last track of the album, Tom Curtain, wrapped it up nicely. Will listen to this again.
Really enjoyed this.
Let’s dance to television
Hard to listen with new ears to an album I’ve listened to hundreds of times it’s great and ahead of its time and obviously incredibly influential.
Interesting album! I can definitely hear its influence in people who came after them. It’s not necessarily my jam, and would probably give it a 3.5, but I respect the musicianship and will round up.
mooi rockich album
Great album. Some awesome hooks, licks, and solos.
Classic
I liked.
Punk rock but it actually feels genuine. They're contributing to the genre without being obnoxious in order to make a statement. Very enjoyable, would listen to again. Favorite songs would probably be Elevation and Torn Curtain. bangers
Really good and surprising. Can recall a lot of modern artists influenced by this unique album.
Even the boring bits are fun.
I've only ever heard of Television from their reputation coming up in New York's famous CBGB. Can't say I had ever heard a song by them previously which is really unfortunate as I quite enjoyed Marquee Moon. The 8 tracks included are a fun romp featuring some really great guitar work and a couple of extended jams that keep you hooked all the way through. I've previously heard of Television as an indie-darling and one of the pioneers of the art rock/punk scene and can totally agree. This was a nice entry on the list and I'm glad to have gotten the exposure. I'll be checking out some of Television's other top tracks to see what else they can offer. One of the better surprises on the list so far. 3.81 stars
music. I’ve listened to this album before, but revisiting it today was a real treat—I ended up spinning it three or four times in a row. What makes Marquee Moon so captivating is its refusal to fit neatly into a single genre. It’s a brilliant, off-kilter blend of post-punk, art rock, and psychedelia. The interplay between the guitars, the sharp lyricism, and the raw yet precise production make it feel timeless and ahead of its time. Favorite Track: “Marquee Moon” – an epic, sprawling masterpiece that showcases the band’s musical vision at its peak. Least Favorite Track: Honestly, there isn’t a weak song on the album. Album Artwork: A cool, minimalist cover that fits the mood perfectly. This listen has definitely inspired me to dig deeper into Television’s catalog beyond this iconic debut.
I liked this album more than I expected to. Must have been the funky long riffs
Gotta listen to this more, might actually be a 5
Have heard and loved the song Marquee Moon. Album reminds me a lot of Parquet Courts, which I realize came way after Television. Really liked — would definitely listen again.
All right notes. All the right beats. So many feels for this one ⭐️
First time listening to this album. So good!
Never heard of these guys before - this was fun! Like some kinda Venn diagram of Talking Heads, The Clash & idk someone else... maybe the Ramones? Liked a lot of the songs and the overall vibe. I guess my one quibble would be that Marquee Moon didn't need to be so long, but I still liked it.
despite somewhat annoying vocals at times, really enjoyed
It’s like punk rock David Byrne and I love it
Cool name, cool band, cool album - always hits
I've had a copy of this for many years and never liked it as much as I thought I should. One thing is that I really dislike the artwork. Another thing is I always wanted or expected it to be more punk or more experimental. But it is a very good record. Nice brooding atmosphere, combined with a bit of Talking Heads style energy. A few standout tracks including the title track. 4*
I've heard the title track way too many times and thought I was sick of it, but in context of the album it still rips. This album is great.
Great album. Never listened to Television before, but reminded me of Talking Heads in the best way. The title song was particularly great!
Really interesting listen. Was a treat for the ears. Solid 7.5 to 8/10
Had never heard of them, but I can see the appeal. I hear the influence of multiple artists in each song.
Another good album choice
Genial
This was awesome. Can hear the influence on many later bands. Feels very modern despite its age.
4/5? Great prog album. Enjoyed the wailing.
Felt a little long at parts but otherwise pretty good!
Walking down the city street, boots on and hands in pockets. Not aimless, but with no direction. Thinking on the graffiti seen, glancing over overpasses and reading the inscription on benches past. Contemplation of people past and future, the feet that have or will have stepped where mine do now. Recognizing both connection and disconnection from them
Pretty good, though it probably would have been more impressive in its day before lots of imitators
Sounds like: Rolling Stones, Bowie, Brian Eno? Like the extended solos. Favourite track maybe Guiding Light
Maybe I was in a good mood today but I liked this album. It had some late 70's jam to it with a bit of early 80's finish. Definitely worthy of another listen.
nice, upbeat rock. enjoyed it more once I read about the lyricism
Es como the strokes de los 1979s
My first reaction to this was "oh, this is budget Talking Heads" but it turned out to be an enjoyable album. I especially liked the titular track Marquee Moon.
I've listened to this before, but I don't remember much. Let's see. This era and this kind of rock bands never leave much of an impact on me, and that's true of most of the album, but the title track is really good, added it to my Liked playlist
I liked this. If I had been buying records in the 70s I probably would have bought this one. The singer sounds just like the singer from the Violent Femmes, by the way. I had to look it up to make sure it wasn't.
It’s like Violent Femmes meets The Pixies. Songs go on a bit too long with no evolution to warrant such a long song time. It’s crazy how much this lead singer sounds like the lead of Violent Femmes. If you asked me when this was recorded I would not have thought late 70s. Actually a really solid album. 8/10
goed album
Also surprisingly really good. Would listen again
Great classic art punk record. However as amazing as the whole thing is, the opening title track overshadows the rest of it and can never remember how any of the other songs go. I know I like them when I hear them, but that first track really is unbeatable. Key tracks: Marquee Moon
I rip on instrumental wankage a lot in this project. This album has a fair bit of it, but there is something different and more meaningful about the melodies and riffs that elevates it beyond "dudes playing solos". It evokes Neil Young and Built to Spill and so many melodic metal bands that I enjoy. This is a great album that I have somehow never listened to. Bravo!
Catchy, repetitive guitar riffs, excellent drumming, subtle but great bass lines. The vocals weren’t immediately appealing to me but grew on me over the course of the album. This is a neat one, which is surprising coming from someone who has consistently given low ratings to punk-adjacent albums.
Low expectations but I really liked this
Suprised by this one, thought they were from UK. Strong album this
Loved this! First listen to Television. Stripped down, guitar driven tunes. Very approachable and non-punky punk.
pretty neat album, i enjoyed it! definitely on the artier side of 70s rock and it stands out as a much more unique and creative album because of it. good stuff. favorites: see no evil, venus, marquee moon
I can't not like strange 70s rock.
An influential band that aspects were dissected up and repurposed in other artists future works. It’s cool to be able to hear the origins of the inspiration of so many hugely successful musicians to come after.
I liked it. Nice and fresh, unexpected rythms
After listen number 2 I think i get it. Its one to revise for sure. 4.5 round down
Marquee Moon(the song) is an all time great:)
Great hooks and riffs. Vocals take a little getting used to but I think they really make the sound. Kind of a proto punk indie rock vibe.
4.5
Don't love the vocals, but this is a grower. 4 stars
Excellent album. Great guitar work and it just has a cool art-punk vibe throughout. My favorites are the title track, "See No Evil", "Venus", and "Torn Curtain". Doesn't quite get to 5 stars, but it's very close. 4.5 stars.
Proto-Strokes, +1 Marquee Moon, -0.5 Tom Verlaine’s vocals
Did not expect a band from the 70’s to have this sort of indie rock sound. Kind of giving off Strokes/Wilco vibes. Loved the title track. Nice pick for this sort of playlist. 4.5 ⭐️
post-punk? early new wave? post-glam? not sure what it is but i like a lot of it
The album reminds me a lot of early Talking Heads, but the vocalist is more punk. I mean, that makes sense they were pretty much doing the same places and such. I think I had heard the title track before, although perhaps a single version (?). It sounds very familiar to me. The guitar solos were very angular, although I do not think of them as "creating a new guitar vocabulary." Just not seeing it. Regardless, I liked the side A quite a lot, the side B... was just okay. Definitely want to hear more about this band. Top tracks: "Marquee Moon," "See No Evil"
It sounds a bit like punk because those are the kind of limited vocals lead singer Tom Verlaine brings. But it's clearly more jangly and melodic - the direct precursor to 80's alternative sounds from bands like REM and the Replacements. It also has a distinct New York style, you can hear some Velvet Underground in it. Although the title track goes on a little long, it has some great guitar licks and opening hooks. So does See No Evil and Friction. This album is not perfect but it's cool. And it's definitely cool to learn about these guys and this album that helped move forward post-punk and alternative. I had never heard of either.
There are moments that i can hear how they influenced the likes of Talking Heads and those that followed. A great album from this post punk indie group
This album feels like if Rush tried to be less rocky and more new wavy and punk. Oh, and I guess with someone who wanted to sing a little more than Geddy. It was delightfully proggy at points, doesn't totally scratch my itch because I want it to be harder rocking, but I did enjoy it. Oozes theme, perfect for the fall or a haunted house if you actually wanted to play decent music. Think this is a solid 3.5, but since that's not there, I'll give it the 4 for trying to be different.
Ever since I can remember, this album has always been viewed by everyone as a punk album, which is funny because I would have put it under the umbrella of art rock or glam rock. Overall, I think it’s definitely a nice, mellow, chill album that just sort of jams out at its own pace. This is the kind of music I really enjoy playing while I’m working. It fits a nice, smooth, and steady baseline that keeps me in a good mood. Other than this album, I haven’t had the chance to listen to anything else from Television, but I definitely plan on working my way through their discography.
pretty crazy. idk its just really good rock, i like it a lot. definitley will return to this, love the solos especially on the title track
8/10
Great, fun album with beautiful guitar
surprised i knew some of it, 80s movie vibes
Surprisingly liked this! Seemed more similar to some things I’ve heard, than, say, Cuban jazz. Not a fan of screechy guitar but liked some songs. Similar vibes to Mae’s songs
The guitar is neat, but his voice is a bit annoying sometimes and the songs are long, though not necessarily dragging (average 5m45s). Specifically, the repetitive guitar and vocals get a bit old and whiny in See No Evil. For the most part, it is enjoyable though. Likes: Guiding Light, Torn Curtain
An enjoyable listen, but nothing that reaches out and grabs me. Another 3.5, rounding up to a 4 just because I would play it again.
I can hear the foundation to so many bands mixed in here. Absolutely love the title song too.
This is actually way ahead of its time - like it’s from 77’ these guys sound like a mars Volta / the clash hybrid with like something else mixed in. It was weird knowing the whole time this was a band from late 70s. I enjoyed it , solid album
This is cool. I especially liked the title track and Torn Curtain.
Excellent guitars and sound. If you told me this was 2000s indie I'd absolutely believe it.
Another classic from 77! This album found its way into my rotation around the time I really got into The Dismemberment Plan, around 2005. I always associate the two bands for that reason although, in a way, they do share similar guitar and vocal stylings at times despite being separated by two decades. For 1977, the guitars are pretty ground breaking, the title track especially. For that reason along with their vocal approach I still hear a lot of Television’s influence on contemporary bands like Parquet Courts, Protomartyr, High Vis, Fontaines DC, IDELS and Wunderhorse. 4.5
7/10. This is a revolutionary album. I really wish that I liked it more than I really do. Perhaps it will eventually grow on me someday. I'll give it four stars. :)
Didn't like it at first, but it grew on me as it progressed.
< talking heads > strokes
Like listening to Post Punk merging into Indie Rock before your very ears
very chill very cool
Great stuff. I was not aware of this band.
strong 4.
Best combination of punk attitude and musicianship
I'm a big fan of the guitars on the titular song. Torn Curtain has a hauntingly beautiful vibe, which is incredibly fitting for the phrase "holding back the tears" phrase that's repeated multiple times throughout. It's always interesting to hear the stark differences between these early alternative/punk bands and the more traditional 70s rock & roll/hard rock of the time. It's also easy to hear the influences bands such as Television have had on later music. Some parts have a punk sound, some songs have a new wave sound, some sound like they're straight from a 2010 indie recording studio. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. This album wouldn't sound too out of place today, which really shows how revolutionary it was.
Belle petite découverte sortie de nulle part !
Long songs are the absolute best
Guitars throughout are awesome. 70s punk banger I was completely unaware of and enjoyed thoroughly
Really enjoyed this - kind of sounded like a melodic punk Rolling Stones kind of thing. Liked it more than expected.
lots of guitar solos
Great album, finally an old guitar album on this list that actually feels like it deserves to be here. Great performances, interesting and catchy songwriting, and incredibly influential on virtually every post-punk band to follow.
one of those albums that wears its influences on its sleeve while still breaking boundaries in the genre. amazing amazing guitar work, really love this one!!
Interesting album. "Marquee Moon" was a bit long though.
When I first listened to this it felt like a second-rate Clash. Listenable but fairly forgettable. I played it a couple of times and forgot about it. Then on Monday morning I woke up with the "See No Evil" riff in my head. I listened to it all again. And it's great. Not brilliant (this is no 5* album) but I know I'll be listening to this again.
A bit of a discovery. Really clever prog rock (I think) worth listening to with some focus. It's really well made musically with great drums, functional bass and excellent guitars (I'd say good virtuosity but always functional). Could be a 5 but I'll stick with a 4 because the vocals are quite same'ish and I keep the fives to the absolute greatest (to me). Great album, I'll definitely explore the band.
Decent jam on a Sunday!
As favoritas são: See No Evil, Marquee Moon e Torn Curtain.
a revelation yet frequently annoying, a contradiction existing within it in much the same way it exists in a lot of the downtown new york rock canon
4/5
Nice mix of feels. cool instrumental tracks
Took a few listens to click for me, but it's the kind of music I generally love, so I decided to stick with it. Might turn into a 5* album after a few more listens.
I like 80s alternative and this had that sound. Good album overall
Diverse, catchy, and jazzy. I appreciate the fuzzy vocals, tight drumming, and long guitar solos. Standout song is “Marquee moon”. This song rips. Also “prove it”
Big fan of the guitar tones on this album. I had only really listened to the title track previously, but the album is pretty good all around
Great Post Punk album. Definite classic
I love the energy of this album—really raw and focused. Excellent!
Good album with instrumental bits that are very nice
I feel like I’ve heard of Television before, although I’m unsure how or why. The album cover makes the band look like a bunch of turbo-dorks, but that’s probably not a bad thing. I think I was expecting something a bit like Buzzcocks, but this felt much more pleasing and catchy. I’m not sure what it is about this album but it does feel more engaging than other similar albums if it’s time. So yeah, listen to it. It’s a good one.
70s punk rock always hits the spot.
Overall this album is just super clean. The drums, guitars, basses, keyboards, are just so coherent - it's like a conversation of instruments. It's soft at times, a little oldie, but always keeps pace enough to keep you engaged, while having vocals that are eccentric, poppy, and a bit punk, as well as a leeeetle krautrock in the psychedelic repetitive kind of way. Clearly an inspiration for the Strokes. Happy I looked them up. Gave me a little context on late 70's rock as it is transitioning and experimenting.
Pretty cool. I’ve heard a lot of hype about this album for years, and it is very very good. Love the guitar sounds. Not quite a five-star album for me yet, but perhaps with repeated listening it could get there.
One that is better than expected again. These guys have some good energy. Like early rock roll with slight punk vibes.
Another classic, though the title track goes on for waaay too long and is like a quarter of the whole album length.
I had never listened to this full album before, despite knowing the epic title track and general reputation. I really liked this and expect it will grow on me with more listening.
I love the melodies
Quite good! Easy to focus at work while listening.
I dig it
Idk what to write here but it was pretty good
4,5/5
a somewhat overrated album in the cannon, but the title track is a fuckin epic slapper
Great guitar work, which to my mind, warrants four stars on that basis alone. Not so fussed on the vocal work though.
Great song/album
Very good. Very interesting. Unique
It's like an early version of OMD. Altogether nice experience. Especially the "Marquee Moon" and "Torn Curtain" were the highlight of the album for me. Great guitar play.
The title track is brilliant - is this really from 1977? The closing track - Torn Curtain - is really not great. It sounds like they're singing to some guy called Kevin. It's got to be said that the guitar work and the bass lines are innovative and catchy. Can see how influential they were.
For how rough the vocals are, this is a very polished album. 4/5
Interessanter Rock, gutes Gittarren-Spiel. 4/5
I knew this was one of those cult classic records but I was still pleasantly surprised by it. No songs I disliked but the title track did not need to be that long.
I enjoyed this album more than I thought, but it just really isn't my thing, in the same way that I've never got into Pavement or The Replacements. I like some jangly guitars in a lot of British music, but this particular style of indie sound from Television and others just doesn't click with me. Again, I didn't dislike it, but it I didn't love it. Obviously, this sound was very revolutionary for 1977, though, so I do think I need to bump it up to 4 stars even if I may personally only give it 3 for my own enjoyment.
markiplier moon
Punk with arpeggios! It’s like Postmodern Jukebox for punk. A good singer would be a great addition. Overall not bad.
I liked it! 4 stars.
Awesome discovery, a really varied rock album - Despite being from the 70s it sounds like mid-2000s Indie. I reckon the likes of the AMs pulled inspiration from this record.
Pretty great 4
A consistently good album, 4 stars or B.
Did I not see this already? Seems not.
I had never heard of the band before but the album was a pleasure to listen to. Interesting songs and enjoyed everyone of them. Solid "This is good" album but not "Wow this blew my mind" album.
This album reminded me a lot of The Strokes. I liked it, and would enjoy listening to it again. Standouts: Venus, Marquee Moon, Elevation, and Torn Curtain.
Title track is goated and always has been. Rest of the album is pretty damn good too.
Really liked this - great guitar riffs and love the punky Sex Pistols vocals! Fave songs were ‘See No Evil’ and ‘Friction’.
4.5
Pretty good
have heard it before, wish i liked it a bit more but its a 4 to me favorite tracks: marquee moon, guiding light, torn curtain
1977! Rock! Lyrics which don't make much sense. Who cares! We're here to rock. Honestly, when I see a track north of ten minutes, I start thinking "oh... oh no" but Marquee Moon (yes, the title track is that long) is actually pretty good and definitely rock.
Holy crap. One of the eras of rock music that was so awesome to me. This is great. Honestly if I had more time to listen it might be a 5, but first impressions is a strong 4
i like this album
This is really good - don't know how I missed this band in the day. Great guitar work and vocals reminiscent of Mick Jagger. Very good listen.
Really nice. Not going to be routine listening, but a solid listen.
This was a classic case of a good album but not great. All of the songs were solid and worked together, but none absolutely floored me or blew me away. Overall though this is about the album and you could see the influence this album would have going forward. Not sure how much I'll come back to it but certainly not something I'll avoid. Probably a 3.5 with half stars
Favorite track: Marquee Moon
Top Three Songs: 1) Venus 2) Elevation 3) Marquee Moon Bottom Three Songs: 1) Friction 2) Prove It 3) See No Evil
It's impossible not to hear how this band could have influences groups as varied as Talking Heads, Pixies, Radiohead, and many others. Gonna have to give this some more listens
Like the energy
What a great album and wonderful to hear it again--the music is fantastic throughout. I wish the lyrics and vocals were up to the greatness of the rest, which is beautiful.
Unique and pretty damn good. It holds up.
I got pretty into this. Great guitar stuff in here. The band is pretty tight. Somewhat sparse arrangement which works for them.
I'm familiar with this album, and enjoyed revisiting it today
Similar to Talking Heads. A grooving punk, alt rock type band. Definitely worth more listens.
Some really great moments of post-punk mixed with some prog styles and really cool progressions. Sadly feels like a little potential was wasted because the singer was actively fighting against the melody
Buen disco.
4.5 for me. Marquee Moon is a banger i will be listening again!
Classic album
An original musical development in rock music.
This is what Post-Punk and Art Rock are about. This is the benchmark for anyone who wanted to make a record of any similarity afterward. It’s a mastery told in eight tracks of a varying length, the longest of which, the title track, is undoubtedly the standout, an incredible showcase that ticks all possible boxes of even the most strict music snob. A true, genuine classic within rock as a whole alongside just punk.
This isn't my first time listening to some songs from Marquee Moon, but it is my first time doing a full listen through. The guitar work is my always my favourite thing about Television, though the other instrumentals are good too. The vocals have always been a bit iffy for me. I enjoy them on some songs, but don't on others. The final track, Torn Curtain, is my favourite.
What a beautifully composed album, the melodies, interplay of jazz and rock, and the long guitar riffs I mean come on!! This is your rock bands favorite alnum. They absolutely killed it and it’s their first album! Not quite a 5 for me but a 4.5
4.5/5. Proto male manipulator music.
Very strong album. I enjoyed the progressive rock elements, nice variety between songs, some excellent guitar work. The singer's voice frequently reminded of Mick Jagger, though Jagger is more electric. My favorite songs were the last two and the sprawling 10 minute title track.
What a great, influential album. I've never listened to this all the way through and didn't know what I was listening to when I heard a track or two back in the day. Most excellent!
A band that I had heard of but never made it a point to listen to. I really liked this one though, the guitar harmonics are really beautiful and I like the simplicity of the production. This is one I'll probably return to.
Never listened to before. Enjoyed it. Groundbreaking?
Crispy clear guitar work and melodies. Somewhere between Led Zeppelin and the Beetles. Some really funky song structures, and jammy solos. This one delivered in true 70s/80s fashion.
So glad I listened to this. Really really like it. Listened all weekend.
Good stuff, greate guitar album
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.
Solid album. Great guitar. Standout songs: See no evil Marquee Moon Guiding light
Very cool sound. I particularly like the longer songs, the guitar riffs are lots of fun and remind of the Talking Heads. Great early new wave fun.
Pretty good.
Damn, some pipes on Adele. Okay, so I’m a hater, sop-pop is garbage, no one can change my mind. I thought this list was made in 2005 so was surprised to see Adele’s mug staring into my soul first thing in the morning. That’s my take anyway, but 50,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong. This album and these songs were on everyone’s ears and everyone’s mouths growing up, a massive impact on the charts gan dabht. I didn’t absolutely hate it, just does nothing. The backing music in the finale, The Sweetest Devotion, was pretty sweet. A Million Years Ago
nice basslines 3.6 rounded up to 4. Marquee Moon Guiding Light Torn Curtain
Stylish pre punk with some great bass and inventive rhythms
Good to be back.
I wish they'd lean more into planting the seeds of (instrumental) Math Rock than into inventing The Strokes but this is pretty good. Title song is a keeper. By far the best shit coming out of 70ies NYC so far.
Great album, big surprise 85/100
Rockpost-punkart punkgarage rock.
An album I’ve only heard massive positives about that I’ve never actually listened to. It’s good! Artsy, some songs are great, but some really drag on which is a big bummer. Still like it a lot.
I was vibing pretty hard the whole time. The bass tickled my brain quite nicely. 4/5
That first switch up in See no Evil is perfect… EEEEEEVIIILLLLUGH. Interesting to have such a comparable band to yesterday (femmes). Switching up throughout… friction is excellent! Has that beefhearty fiddle on the guitar, perhaps without as strong guiding vocals. In that sense feels younger, but not to a fault. Marquee moon is a fucking experience… I’m too lazy to not do anything in the background… BUT I’m going to make an exception. As it gets to minute 9 there is a beautiful climax… deconstructs back down for the final run around. Badass “Elevation” - guitars very much precede RHCP. Really good guitar on this song especially. Quite clash-y/ johnny don’t surf on “Guiding Light”. MISREPRESENTATIVE VOCALS. Some of latter songs do feel somehwat laboured (final one). So Talking heads but perhaps stripped slightly back and not 80s. Solid 4.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Rock and blues/R&B fused in a way that reminds me of Tom Petty’s first album (though this is more overwritten).
An interesting album. Weird for punk songs to be longer than a few minutes :D. The title track is fantastic (although a bit too long IMO), and the rest of the album is good if not remarkable.
Cool album. Reminds me of several other alt rock bands.
Great album, very different and seems like early alternative
Pretty good rock music. The album was well put together, I liked the motifs, and the longer tracks worked well. Stand-out: Guiding Light
never heard of this. so good though!
Fav: Torn Curtain Least Fav: Marquee Moon
Monumentally important record! Not my favorite, but I hear a ton of other bands in this record. Super influential stuff and an important piece of music history.
Favourite track: Torn Curtain.
4☆/5 06.29.2024
This is solid. Still sounds fresh. Last year, I knew a 25 year old who had never heard Television before. A song from this album came on and he thought it was a new song from a new band. I like this album. All songs are good if not great.
Really surprised by this, hadn't really listened to Television before. Amazing instrumentation all around, but the two interplaying guitars and bass guitar were really intricate and fun to listen to. I listened to their other two albums on streaming and enjoyed them as well. Solid band!
A solid entry for the Rock, Post Punk, Punk, New Wave era of the late 1970s. Their musical talents shine through on the track Marquee Moon. It's too bad these guys didn't get more recognition. Great album.
What a great find! I was most impressed by the strong hooks that managed not to get old even with their repetitiveness. Great guitar and bass playing in particular, extending past the typical low-skill-high-energy combo of the punk/post-punk genre. See No Evil in particular has an infectious guitar riff that opens the album excellently. Not a huge fan of the vocals – partially demonstrated by the lack of memorability in the lyrics and melodies – but the instrumentation mostly makes up for it. Marquee Moon is the groovy, hard-rocking centrepiece of the album, blurring the border between classic punk and classic rock. Venus is another highlight. Overall, exceeded my expectations. A high 4. Key tracks: Marquee Moon, See No Evil, Venus
Excellent! It’s a shame I’m just learning about this band now..
I liked the vibe, lost me a bit with the duration of some of the tracks but it's surprising this came before the 80's, notes of pink floyd, joy division and new order.
First time hearing of this band or any of their music. Fantastic album, I could probably give it 5 stars after a few more listens.
I enjoyed this album, had enough about it to stand out in an unnecessarily large pool of 70s albums on this list.
I love Television. I love Marquee Moon track in particular although it is quite long. It’s one of a small select number that I can stand being so long. The album sounds cool, there are aspects of it that sound so contemporary to me. I enjoy Tom Verlaine’s vocals with the music which sounds like a form of subtle punk.
Pretty good! Nice upbeat well played music.
Unreal. Loved this! The guitar work is wild.
Such a good era for music (late 70s early 80s) where even lesser bands and more obscure artists sound awesome
Paar zieke solo's hoor
Well, on to album #2 and it's... another great rock album from 1977 that wasn't a huge commercial smash, Television's Marquee Moon. I've listened to the title track a ton over the years, but I'm not sure I've ever actually sat down and given the album a full listen, so this is a great opportunity to listen to something I've never really experienced.
I loved this album. Wish I could give it a 4.5* rating. Loved the singers voice and the vibe of the whole thing.
Really good! Mix between Bowe and Talking heads with some Queens.
Interesting, that this is rated as punk. I would call it rock or even pop. But it sounds nice, like it.
and the top lyric award goes to 'my hands are like gloves' and 'my eyes are like telescopes'! unbelieveably, these are from two separate songs low 4- I'm enjoying the guitar too much for a 3 but also.. what??
Yeah this is great
It's like a New Wave band playing Classic Rock.
Solido 7/10. Rock piolon. Marquee Moon y El último tema buenardiños
Surprisingly far ahead of its time. A nice soft rock/post punk album. Not sure how to feel about the singing voice but it fits the genre. I like the guitar work, even if it gets repetitive over the course of the album. Some long songs, unnecessarily so in my opinion. 3.5
Hooked from the first track, immediately heard The Strokes ripping out of this. Apparently they'd never heard of Television before This Is It. Every track is a gem, I love the proggy meandering going on especially on Marquee Moon. The production is brilliant too, you can clearly hear everything going on and each instrument gets the chance to shine. Prefer the energetic first half to the second where the tone mellows. I will definitely listen again. Standout tracks: Venus, Marquee Moon, and Guiding Light.
This album ended up being one I missed earlier on, so I didn't have the cover or description to go off of, just hit play and away I went. I honestly thought this album was 2000s or later and not from the 70s. I can't quite pinpoint who it sounds like. Kinda like the strokes, or phoenix, something in that indie alt lane. Someday I'll figure that out. But this album was pretty great. So far ahead of it's time. Favorite track "Marquee Moon" 4/5
That title track is great
One of the 1st "new wave" albums I bought loved prove it and marquee moon. Great album overall.
slightly dreamy, overall very smooth sailin' art rock i would say. lots of the tracks are very artistically driven but keep the tone considerably quiet and cool all the way through. while it didn't stick out TOO much to me, it had a very nice sound and i got in the zone a bit when i listened to it.
Listenable yet edgy
Enjoyed it more than I expected. Definitely playlist worthy
Have never heard the og of See no Evil before now lol
really unique instrumentals, though the vocals can be a bit jarring
Straight up solid punk record. I feel like we wouldn't have had the Strokes without these guys. Not saying that the Strokes ripped them off either just more of a really cool garage sounding kind of post punk kind of new wave sounding rock band. Great grooves. I lose a little steam towards the end of the record but not because any of the playing or songwriting is bad. More so because I'm too ADD and want lots of crazy arrangements in my songs more recently. Definite recc.
Pretty chill and easy to listen to. Could feel the punk and jazz working together in cohesion.
Rockpost-punkart punkgarage rock.
Felt like the birth of indie rock. Got a real interpol vibe
Strong bit overrated
Wow! I have slept on this album. The first side and the first song on the second side (Elevation) are current and relevant that they could be played today and sound totally in sync with current indie music. While the second side is still as lyrically strong if not stronger than the first side the music suffers for me as it slows down in tone and brings down what was a straight ahead rocker of an album. Definitely a keeper.
4.5 Extremely inventive guitar work without the pretentious connotation that may come with albums of that nature. This one feels groundbreaking. Lyrically captivating! Phenomenal musicianship across the board - wow. Again, back to the work of Tom Verlaine -> I had to look him up His playing makes me want to sell my spaceship console of a pedal board and hone in on my ability solely as a guitarist. I'm going to make a lot of music thanks to this one.
Own it. Good stuff, you can hear how it influenced early 80s music
I usually don’t care for those late 70s early 80s pop or I guess not pop punk but new wave punk rock bands but this one was actually pretty good. Don’t know if I wanna list other other other albums but this album was great.
Oh my god. This is a damn good album. How could I miss them until now? There are so many things on this record that I love at other bands (The Strokes, U2, ....) - except one thing: I would love to like the voice more.
Friction and the title track are great songs. Other songs are good too.
Well crafted songs and great guitar work. Worth a listen.
4/5
Loved it. Lyrically, exactly what I needed to hear. This band was ahead of it's time.
The roots of post-punk and indie rock have been laid out. The Strokes thank you.
This album could be the love child of the Violent Femmes and Pink Floyd if it weren't before the VF's time. I really enjoyed listening to it, but my only complaint is that some of the longer songs don't need to be as long as they are!
was good, some good tracks, unusual style but was good
Good album, was a good listen.
What a nice surprise! I'd never listened to Television before, and what a delight. Some really talented musicians here.
Overall I liked this, but it didn't blow me away. The guitar carries the album. Marquee Moon was the highlight track, 5 stars to that song, but the others were nothing special. I can see that they did influence many bands that followed them, that did it better than they did.
I really enjoyed this. I had been meaning to check this band out for years because I know they influenced a lot of the music I love. The guitar melodies were fun. The chord progression were interesting. The vocals were great.
Really enjoyed this. I particularly like Tom Verlaine's quirky guitar style.
I love the mellow punk vibes that could be mistaken for modern indie, and then you add in some righteous guitar riffs and fills and I can see how these guys might have been onto something. I think the singing may have hindered my in the beginning of the album with the shakey vibrato and mild whiny-ness. However, as the album progressed I can appreciate the style in a similar to the violent Femmes or David Byrne. Really explorative sound in this album with a rock foundation and an intrepid spirit.
First Impressions: Amazing production. Guitars sound amazing on every song, love the riffs. Drums and bass sound really nice as well. Beautiful ending. Sometimes the vocals are a little harsh though, and the lyrics and pretty interesting. Very unique, I've never heard anything like it, the melodies are very creative and strangely catchy. Sound kind of reminds me of Joy Division and Talking heads. Will relisten before rating. 2nd Listen: The vocals have grown on me, the guitars sound even better on a second listen. Seems like all the songs have so much moving parts. Elevation has an amazing riff, reminds me of a song can't figure it out though. I like Guiding Light a lot more on the second listen very beautiful and groovy song. Venus is very interesting lyrically, Prove it has a great grove. Torn curtain is an amazing outro the guitar in the last 30 seconds is beautiful. Overall really good album, great melodies and guitar work, unique vocals, I can see how it was so influence. Love the part in Friciton when he says "How does a snake get out if it's skin" and the guitar solo that follows. Standout Tracks: Friction Marquee Moon (Great Riff + Bassline) (Love the opening line and the way he sings it) Elevation (Incredible Riff) Torn Curtain
