Have listened to many of the songs before. I like bob dylan but wasn’t in the mood for him today.
Bob Dylan is an undeniably phenomenol lyricist and I can really see why his songs resonated with so many at the time. That said, musically I'm not sure they've withstood the test of time as strongly. I'm sure it sounded groundbreaking at the time, but now it's hard for me to get really into the songs. Still not a bad album overall.
Is it just me or do Bob Dylan songs all sound a little too similar? The country blues style just doesn't do it for me. Almost every song he sings he uses only 2 or 3 vocal tones, adding to how similar they all sound while also making an unexciting monotone feel for much of his songs, often broken up by the same harmonica sounds.
Lock this man up
Great lyrics and storytelling, but over an entire album Dylan's songs tend to drag and drag, save for a few highlights. Favourites: Like a Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately
It was good I guess
Bob Dylan couldn't sing well even if his life depended on it.
such a classic, not my style tho
3.5
Decent.
Bob
bob dylan? more like dylan bob
3,5
Not for me
Poetic songwriting with one of my favorite songs of all time. Probably closer to 4 stars but I like lots of other bob dylan albums more.
Listened last week. Another one that's just not my taste. I see why people like Bob Dylan, but his voice just doesn't do it for me. Also his harmonica was a lot all at once. Rating: 6/10 Fave track: Like a Rolling Stone
Someday I’ll have listened to my last Bob Dylan album on the list and that’s what gets me through
"Like A Rolling Stone" one of the greatest songs ever. I absolutely hated "Ballad of a Thin Man", and could have done with about 8 minutes less of "Desolation Row". The rest of the album was just fine. It's no Blood on the Tracks.
I can’t believe the same musical genius released two groundbreaking, mind-blowing albums in the year 1965. But enough about John Coltrane. In all seriousness, I respect the lyrics but the music itself just sort of plods along. 5-10 minute long songs where the backing band plays the same thing all way through. Like a Rolling Stone though 👍
He's addicted to the harmonica like it's the 60s version of a vape.
Catcht mich nicht
5 - fine
Not my thing. Didnt care for most of it except for Desolation Row. That song is very important to me.
Had an amazing time reading through the lyrics on this one, not so much in terms of listening though.
3,2/5
Really hate that I can’t love this one Addressing the elephant in the room, Like a Rolling Stone is absolutely one of the greatest songs of all time; among music critics it is seriously in contention for the best song ever made. Even with it being a genre I don’t particularly care for, I can tell it’s truly a special song. This is definitely an album you have to read the lyrics for, which I definitely think is the strongest part of Dylan’s music. They’re poetic without being too pretentious, but they still have so much meaning. Ballad of a Thin Man and Tombstone Blues in particular resonated with me. I do think this album absolutely demonstrates Dylan’s shortcomings though. There’s a lot of emotion in his vocals, but the range just isn’t there; he’s just not much of a singer. As everyone knows by now I just don’t like Folk as a genre and although there’s definitely more rock and electronic elements in this one than some that we’ve listened to, I still just can’t bring myself to truly enjoy it. The harmonica blasting you for minutes at a time just really irritates me. I don’t wanna hate on Dylan too much, especially since the songs on this album genuinely changed so much about music going forward, but I think a better musician could take what Dylan built and make something even better. It’s a tough one to rate, since the good is truly transformative but there’s a lot I don’t care for in this one. After thinking a bunch I think this belongs on the higher end of 3s; I’ll definitely have to listen again to see if I’m able to appreciate it more
I dont really get folk. The harmonica also hurt my ears on that last track. Sorry dad
Not for me. That's all I can say about this album. I can recognize why someone would say it's really good. But this album and this music is not for me at all. Also I hate the fact that the last song was 10 and a half minutes long.
Decent album.
Legendary. For songwriting. For not being able to sing. For introducing The Beatles to weed. For changing over to electric guitar. For a handful of songs that capture the essence of the country. But mainly for wasting my time.
its was alright for an introduction to folk but it was a little boring
Nice folk rock album from the legend. Not my favorite style but still some good songs and pleasant listen overall.
Very interesting probs fav song is like a rolling stone. Not bad album considering I'm a pop girlie at heart. 7/10
Tjaaaaaa Elsker 'Like a Rolling Stone', kan godt lide 'It Takes a Lot to Laugh ...'. 2.8
Much better than “Blonde On Blonde”. The musicians sounded like they had fun making this album. Too bad that lyrics weren’t coherent enough to understand the themes of the songs.
bob dylan
Would give it a 3.5 if possible - really enjoyable listen!
It was fine, not a big bob dylan guy
I don't actually mind all of this. I think Dylan's voice is fine, and I like a lot of the more rock instrumentation. Unfortunately a lot of the songs overstay their welcome and I really did not enjoy Desolation Row.
I like Bob Dylan more than I thought
Not the best Dylan album
It was okay
I will never understand how Dylan got big. It makes no sense to me. Keep in mind I enjoy this era of Dylan and seen him live. I still couldn't tell you why. I prefer some of his other albums to this one. Another Side of Bob Dylan is a stronger album to me. This has a few of his hits on it and I think this one released at a point in time that captured the radio. Like a Rolling Stone, great track, Ballad of a Thin Man, good stuff right there. Some miss me though Takes a Train to Cry is one. If you like ol Bob you will like this. If you hear his voice and recoil, you will hate this album.
JUDAS As usual with Bob, I like the jangly, folky stuff and don’t like the blues stuff at all.
I'm not sure Bob Dylan will ever be quite my thing but this is still a pretty good listen Fav tracks: Like a Rolling Stone, Queen Jane Approximately
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤮🤮
Like a rolling stone - 4/5 Tombstone blues - 3/5 It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry - 3/5 From a Buick 6 - 2/5 Ballad of a thin man - 2/5 Queen Jane approximately - 3/5 Highway 61 revisited - 2/5 Just like Tom Thumbs blues - 4/5 Desolation row - 4/5
I’m not a massive Dylan fan as a performer as a songwriter I totally respect him. This was alright though a high 3
NIce album really had my full attention
nunca escuche bob Dylan pero me gusto aprobado
not the worst, not the best either; keeps me on neutral ground. I'm not a particular fan of the harmonica either. This album's more of a 2.7 for me.
Listening session: april 27th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard one song before Thoughts: of course I agree that Bob Dylan is a good musician and a great songwriter in particular, but I really don’t enjoy his singing so that’s why I find it hard to trilt appreciate his music Favourite tracks: Like a Rolling Stone & Ballad of a Thin Man
highway 61 rocks
The old saying goes: Bob Dylan - great songwriter, terrible singer. It's why just about every cover of his songs is better than the original. This album will not change that opinion. Very listenable though and a fine dissection of middle America. Have three stars, sir.
6/10
Hørte på litt, virka greit
pretty great stuff, sort of in between 3 and 4 on this one. but boring at times but some songs are just too good. real poetry
probably the most ive injoyed bob dylan so far 3.5
You know what? I'm done sticking up for Dylan. His country and western contemporaries were representing this style of music far better than he was, but Dylan gets laurels about being a generational talent and poet. Title track is the best song on this album.
Swagger!
A vibe
like a rolling stone, buick 6 were standouts it was alright
Pretty good Dylan even though he isn't my favorite
Feel 7/10: I like how the songs are almost jazzy but also a little bit of rock feel Length 6/10: Runs a little long and some songs drag Musicality 8/10: I personally love the feeling of the music and the story telling. Also, cool harmonica Flow 6/10: The songs blend well, mostly because they all sound the same Understandability 4/10: I have no clue what is even being told. Feels like american pie type confusing Overall 6/10: Good fun album. I don’t know that I would revisit but was worth the time
Sympa mais trop ressemblant
Fair Dylan album, not much standing out from this one compared to the others I have heard. I feel it is a lightly muted or toned down version of him. 3/5
Like a Rolling Stone... this album accelerates down hill fast.
Tangled Up in Blue and Hurricane aren’t present here so this is an inherently weaker Dylan album but I still mostly enjoyed it. The closing song however does not justify its 11 minute duration.
This is kinda mid in a normal setting but on a roadtrip it would be aight for 10 min
It’s fine
Seems decent 3. Sounds like the foundation of modern music to follow for some of these songs
This guy is a bit of an enigma for me. When his voice works for me, it works. When it doesn't work for, me oh brother, it really does not work for me. And his songs are, generally, too damn long despite the music being good. "Like a Rolling Stone" is one that I've always liked. "Ballad of a Thin Man" was probably my favorite track on the album.
Still not fond of his voice. I read there’s 7 albums from Dylan on here, mentally preparing myself
Honestly... MEH! I also dislike Bob Dylan's voice. He's got a couple of great songs but I've heard them so many times I avoid them.
Now, you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word "Now" And you say, "For what reason?" and he says, "How" And you say, "What does this mean?" and he screams back, "You're a cow!" -The greatest poet of his generation(?)
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Favorite Track: Highway 61 This song sounds like it could easily be a They Might Be Giants song.
The harmonica gets to be a bit much, Mr. Dylan.
The harmonica in Queen Jane was a cheese grater on my ears but otherwise solidly enjoyed this! Would be a fun road trip album, obviously.
His voice here is actually pretty okay, and the amount of harmonica is tolerable. Haven’t heard too much Bob Dylan but this whole album sounded really nice instrumentally. I have no idea though what the lyrics mean though. I feel like artists like Bob Dylan deserve like a lyrical deep dive, so maybe once I sit down to really dissect them I might enjoy or appreciate this album, and Bob Dylan in general, more.
I could revisit this one, but I'd have to be in a very particular mood. Could be an issue with the recording, but the harmonica could be grating on the ears sometimes.
I have a lot of respect for Bob Dylan
not a dylan's fan
Like A Rolling Stone is a fantastic song, but I felt like the rest of the album didn’t hold up to it. In some ways this is a bit of a frustrating listen- the lyrics are so opaque, and a bunch of the songs are just spoken poetry. When he actually sings I find the songs much better. I like Bob Dylan and this is supposed to be one of the great albums- but it didn’t really do it for me.
I was so ready to continue being a Dylan hater so was surprised that this album was pretty good. Way better than the rest I've heard from him.still not big on him as a singer but the composition in these was good, plus not really a bad song here.
Its was good but since it was so poetry/lyrics focused there were few times where it was hard to keep on going , I think i was in the middle of the album and ballad of a thin man started playing, my God.... if felt like he was constipated and was trying to shit instead of singing, bless his heart, but the text is good so you kind of have to forgive him for raping your ears, I wouldn't be surprised if he sung so bad it on purpose ? Like to push the lyrics to the foreground? Idk don't shoot me if I am wrong but I think this is country or like folk music which i also liked esp the instruments like harmonica etc
Not my top 5 Dylan.
I really like Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. I had no idea they played on this record. This one is more listenable than the first Dylan album we got. I generally do not like narrative songs, and some of his stories were...long.
3.5/5, very groovy album especially the first few songs. But not quite my taste and there are some stinkers (ballad of a thin man) but if the album was on radio I’d rock with it and wouldn’t complain.
I think the idea of bob dylan is possibly always going to be better than actually listening to bob dylan. This album checks a lot of boxes that i would’ve thought would make it a really strong album for me but there’s something about the cryptic nasally vocals that just doesn’t quite hit. I’d heard this 3 times for the AM top 100 already so I was familiar with the songs and did enjoy most of them but I just don’t rate it as highly as everyone else seems to 3.5
Top 5 most unbearable singing voices
I’ll give him credit, this is much better than blood on the tracks. Mainly because you hear his voice a bit less. Specific rating - 3.4 Fav song - like a rolling stone Least fav- it takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry
He does storytelling very well. A lot of reviews saying they prefer Bob Dylan songs sung by other people (which I maybe agree with but I do still enjoy his singing) which makes me wonder how many Bob Dylan written songs are on the list from other peoples albums- I can think of 5 albums we've already had with BD songs so there must be tons! Favourite song: Ballad of a Thin Man Least: Queen Jane Approximately (too much harmonica! chill with it!)
7/10
Not my fav Dylan album but still some solid songs
Of Dylan's classic electric trilogy, this is the album I'm least likely to listen to. The standout tracks are absolute bangers, but the filler is just noisy and annoying.
This is a much better Dylan album than the first one I got. Still, Dylan's voice continues to bother me.
I'm pretty sure by now that I'll never be a Dylan fan, but I'll admit Highway 61 is one of his least tepid albums. Mostly tolerable, sometimes even enjoyable. Still far too much harmonica, but the other instruments are all right. Dylan's voice is slightly less annoying than usual, and I did like Ballad Of A Thin Man (which probably saved the album for me). All right, I'm all out of praise. This is probably the most appreciative I'll ever get about him... 5/10
The only Dylan record I can get through without wanting to throw my Bluetooth speaker out the window. It leans more blues than rock, kind of greasy and rough, and for once his flat, slightly grating voice actually fits the vibe.
I don't like it much. But it's good to listen to new things
The good songs are amazing and the not good songs are real bad. A little inconsistent for me.
I enjoyed listening to this album but mostly in the background. The songs all sound a little similar. Songwriting is probably amazing but his voice isn’t great and gets a bit annoying after a while.
Starting off with like a rolling stone. It alright, but like most tracks on this album, overstays its welcome a bit. Tombstone blues was again, fine, but slow. It takes a lot to laugh… had the title of a mid 2000s emo anthem, so it gets a pass. From a Buick 6 was fun, so it also gets a pass. Ballad of a thin man was awesome! I liked it a lot. Approximately queen Jane was awesome too!! It was slightly screechy at the end, but mostly it was a great narrative track. Highway 61 revisited also had some awesome moments, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous track. Tom thumbs blues was ok. Desolation Row was great. Now, do I prefer the MCR Desolation Row, of course, but this one is pretty good too. It went on for a while, but I didn’t feel the length. It kept my interest which is always a bonus. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 86/1089
It's the best of the three Dylan albums I've listened to. Unfortunately he still can't sing. Also while some of these songs were more musically interesting, a few followed the exact same structure of one or two lines then repeating the title or theme of the song.
Love learning more about Dylan and there are some lyrics here that bowl me over but when you grow up a Stevie Wonder fan it’s hard to listen to someone who’s actively bad at playing the harmonica.
Some songs might be a little long, but all in all; bangers. 3.5 stars, id say
Top Songs: Like a Rolling Stone It takes a lot to laugh...
Is decent.
He’s a great lyricist but a lot of his music just don’t float my boat. Much of this album feels like filler. It is definitely listenable and re-listenable, though
Judas
Wasn't crazy about it. It was fine to listen to, but not anything I'd listen to again.
Though i don't like him much, there's no other like him
Hootin and hollerin
ja. desolation row gehört verbannt
Amazing storytelling; love electrified Dylan; felt long at times and wanted the songs to move on (e.g., "Desolation Row")
I just really dislike Bob Dylan's voice. It ruins the poetry of the lyrics, which I've read on their own and really enjoyed, but then he starts singing them and they all sound trite and overdone because of his cadence. I get that this was revolutionary at the time, but at this point I can go to any local bar and hear someone play a brand new song that sounds exactly like this. I dislike an overlong song and that seems to be his specialty. But I will say, the album grew on me and by the end of it, I didn't hate it as much. Still not my favorite by any means and you probably won't ever find me listening to Bob Dylan on my own. But I don't HATE it as much as I did at the beginning.
I just dont like his voice
To be listened to
Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan and Dylan because he SPIT HOT FIYA!!! Idk
Gotta love a harmonica but, Bob, sometimes I would say less is more. Less is more is also something that maybe could have been applied to Desolation Row
Nostalgia factor. First Bob Dylan album i ever heard. Then I saw him live and he ruined himself for me. This is the first listen of this album since. Better than I remember:)
I do love a Dylan song, and this collection is really good, but it's not one I listen to. It just doesn't have his magic. Fun listen though, topnotch harmonica, it's been awhile
I don't really listen to Dylan and didn't enjoy Freewheelin' very much, so I was surprised how much this one chimed with me. One or two all-timers and plenty of foot-tapping stuff besides.
I am struggling to decide of this is an amazing album or not. Off the bat, dont love the production on this. Bass and drums so far in the background they may as well not be there. Bob’s crappy harp is loud enough though. On the other hand the man has a way with words and there is appeal in a stripped back playing in the corner of a hall sound, but it does seem unfair to have most of your band playing in a different hall altogether. Have to give props to someone who can raise their voice to something so immediately recognisable but damn the man has limited melody. So why is it so listenable. I think if you dont hone in too much, take the sum of the parts its bot a terrible listen.
Solid
I mean Bobby D is a legend, however im nae a fan of the drone.
It is fine? I know the way to really appreciate Dylan is to listen to the lyrics carefully but not had the time today.
Really nice vibes on this. Always been a bit daunted by getting into Bobs records and never knew where to start. I’m happy this was my first experience. Really catchy songs, great vocals and the harmonica backing up some songs is great variety. Looking forward to more
Gun to my head, I think if I had to recommend ONE Dylan album to someone, it would be this one. In terms of classic Dylan, this one’s right over home plate. That being said, can we be done now?
A little less rambling than his other albums. Still, just not my guy
I have this album, I do like early Dylan before he went mainstream, good to listen again to Tombstone blues.
That first tune is so iconic, some of the lyrics in other songs are so magnificent. but he just doesn't hit the thrill factor for me to be the biggest fan in the world
Its seems jolly but it's not for me as it seems random at times as the rhythm is not matching the beat. This could as be due to perhaps music was like that at that time. Overall couldn't finish it, I loved the instrumentals.
i did not like this one
Rock & blues like this is a grave rarity in my library of music, but it always sounds timeless. I want the button-down shirt I presume Bob is wearing in the cover. General mood while listening: 😌 (some relief to be found here)
Actually kind of good. Not as bad as I thought it would be.
I sure do like the idea of Bob Dylan.
His voice is insufferable. But this album wasn’t bad.
There’s some good stuff here but most of it I’m indifferent on and some I downright didn’t like, hard to rate this one. Like A Rolling Stone was obviously my song of the album with Ballad of a Thin Man and Desolation Row being my other highlights.
A lot better than I expected it to be
Like a rolling stone and Ballad of a thin man are certified bangers. Queen Jane Approximately sounds very similar to the latter. Am I the only one? The rest is alright.
Having only listened to his earlier, acoustic stuff this was quite refreshing. Although I still prefer his earlier work this is a good album. The vocals I always find a bit tedious after some time, same with the harmonica. My highlights are: Ballad of a Thin Man and Desolation Row
Has some great hits
Listened to this a lot as a teenager, kinda had enough of it.
I've always had a complicated relationship with Dylan. I'm not one of those people who thinks he's been vastly overrated and can't sing, but I have never been one who thinks he's the best songwriter of the 21st century. I enjoy the odd song and I'm intrigued by the legend of Dylan. On his most celebrated work here, I've always enjoyed my time with it but I have never walked away thinking it was one of the best albums of all time like many others do. With the messy organ playing, 'Like A Rolling Stone' is a stomper of a song and I would rate this album higher if we got more tracks like that. I love the loose playing of his band. Its almost amateurish, but adds to the charm and feels like you're watching an energetic bar band. Dylan is fine when it comes to his voice and his lyrics. There's a few good lines here, but I always found his writing style to be pretentious and vague. A lot of the songs go on for longer than needed, with the 11 minute 'Desolation Row' taking the absolute biscuit. Outside of the iconic opener, the bluesy 'From A Buick 6' and the cutting bite of 'Ballad Of A Thin Man' were two other strong cuts. I doubt I'll ever be won over by Dylan, but I'll be keeping an open mind when his other records pop up over the course of this project.
Like a Rolling Stone Tombstone Blues Queen Jane Approximately Highway 61 Revisited
El primero no me gustó, este sí
Nice, this is a lot better than freewhilin' imo. There is a lot more happening musically. Like a rolling stone is a banger.
Ugh… the guy cannot sing and the harmonica solos blow up my eardrums… unfortunately however I get the appeal and the music itself is pretty solid. Bordering on 2 but 3 because I think I’m biased
*Appreciate the musicianship, I just don't get too excited about Dylan.
I recognize how influential Bob Dylan is and how significant and influential he has been on music. But the music itself...? It fails my basic test for "great music": Rewards Attention, but does not Demand it. I'm sure there's a lot going on in this poetry. That it says a lot if you sit down and analyze it. But you would have to sit down and analyze it. And if you don't do that, it's mostly... monotonous and runs way too long. His voice is hard to understand. When the poetry is what matters, that makes it hard to appreciate. His delivery does not cue you in to when you really need to pay attention. It just sort of rambles. And the snippets you catch? Lack the weight on their own that you would get if you isolated a random line by Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Townes Van Zandt, Kendrick Lamar, Leonard Cohen, or Tom Waits. His lines aren't interesting on their own from either a melodic or rhythmic perspective. They don't mix up. And he goes on like that for 6 minutes straight (6/9 songs on this album are >5:30).
This is half-decent Dylan, which means I actually like some of the songs but would massively prefer cover versions of the songs. At least it's not the pure folkie stuff.
3.5
It's cool, i liked that acoustic sound and Bob's vocals
Craig: liked the big songs Courtney: i think i just don’t love Bob Dylan…
I like the part about the one-eyed midget. There are a couple of bangers on here but it doesn't hit like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan or even Bringing It All Back Home.
Bob Dylan..
God works in mysterious ways, because even before I knew which album I was going to listen to yesterday, I had already bought the record that was recommended to me: Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. And, once again, I feel the need to make something clear from the start: I deeply recognize Bob Dylan’s importance. I think he’s an extraordinary songwriter, and no one can take away his merits. He won a Nobel Prize in Literature, after all. So whatever I felt about this album says much more about me than about him. I thought the album was… okay. I’d give it three stars. Not because it’s bad, but because I simply couldn’t fully connect with it. Some tracks felt very long and repetitive to me—especially the one where he talks about his mother working in a factory and not having shoes (I think it’s Tombstone Blues). At the same time, there are undeniably brilliant songs here: Like a Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately. These are great tracks, and I understand why this album is so revered. Still, despite its quality, it’s not an album I feel like revisiting. I’m not saying it’s bad; I’m saying it didn’t work for me. I also realized that I’m not particularly fond of the harmonica sound, which probably plays a role in how I experience Dylan’s music. Not liking this Bob Dylan album doesn’t make it a bad album. Again, it says much more about my taste than about the work itself. Throughout this challenge of listening to many albums—especially following the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list—I’ve been confronted with a lot of music I wouldn’t normally choose, music I don’t necessarily enjoy, and music I know I won’t return to. This Dylan record is a good example: I listened to it once, absorbed it, selected a few songs I liked, and now I feel ready to move on. That’s actually why I’ve started to reconsider the idea of strictly following this list. Lately, I’ve been listening to more albums I didn’t like than ones I truly loved. Still, overall, it was an interesting experience. I had never listened to a full Bob Dylan album before. I already knew he was brilliant, and I still agree—he really is an exceptional songwriter. But this album didn’t click with me the way it does with so many other people. And maybe that’s just my own limitations, not the music’s.
Un clásico.
The talk-singing is very hit or miss for me. The frustrating thing is that he sounds so good fully singing on songs like It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry, which is by far my favorite song on this album. Musicianship, songwriting, and overall sound is good, just not sold on his voice
I'm surprised to hear that Bob Dylan can create an approachable album - he should've done less of those slow, neverending songs. 'Like a Rolling Stone' certainly is one of his greatest creations.
BEST SONGS: - It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry - Ballad of a Thin Man - Desolation Row
Carried by Like a Rolling Stone, otherwise rambly and noisy. Harmonica felt extremely piercing
Never been a huge fan of Dylan. This didn't do much to change my opinion. Props to Desolation Hall. When I saw an 11 minute track I groaned but it played better than I expected.
Stemmen hans blir ganske irriterende i lengden. Ellers helt ok.
Quite a slow album that incorporates lots of elements of country - mainly the harmonica crossed with paino. I wouldn’t ordinarily listen to an album like this but it is nice to move to a much slower grrove that has less to take in at once.
Yeah, not a Dylan guy
Real solid songwriting as per usual from him, i just prefer some of his later works like Blood on the Tracks or Time out of Mind. Ballad of a thin man is one of his best songs period.
I felt neutral. I liked his voice and the guitar but it was hard to listen to the whole album because I was bored. My listening might have benefited from knowing the context in which the album was made and released.
Several good songs, not my favorite of his albums.
Bruh's got 2 first names
This is my first ever Bob Dylan album! Let's goooo. I think I liked 3 songs off the album. Definitely takes getting used to his vocal style.
I definitely preferred the last half of this album than the first,, Like a Rolling Stone was cool for the first three minutes before I realized it kept going and kept repeating. I think the repetitiveness is what felt like the beginning dragged; versus Desolation Row, which is 11 whole minutes, but doesn't feel repetitive because of the more poetic lyrics
As much as I don’t care for Bob Dylan overall, this was at least lively and interesting enough. It’s not gonna make me a fan.
I don't know what he's singing about half the time, but he certainly writes intriguingly creative songs. I like the energy and the bluesy feel. Sometimes the songs are almost too "spoken" and I wasn't super drawn in by anything in particular. I kept searching for something to really love, but didn't find it. And I usually love a harmonica, but it was a bit too much in this album.
I always love a harmonica, but I didn't connect to the album otherwise. Might relisten again sometime.
The song "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" is my favorite song so far.
Flottur Dylan. En samt ekkert betri en ég hélt.
it’s a little bit slow but overall it wasn’t bad
Not first listen; 3.5; Feel like this is one I will need to give multiple listens. Very poetic lyrics with jangly, charging, folky, rock music. The music matches perfectly with Dylan's rambling style. Favorite Track: Tombstone Blues
Where this album shines more is lyrically on its storytelling.
3 out of 5 Much better! Classic Dylan; his 6th album in the 60s. Some great rock and roll with little soul and blues
Ugh. From the first 3 seconds of the intro track, I already know I’m gonna hate this. Okay, hang on—second track was way better. Let’s push through.
Harmonica can be sooo hit or miss. I saved/liked "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Desolation Row" but I will still rate this a 3.
great brackground music i do really hate long repetitive song s tho so he was doing too much with that 11 minute song.
Not a Dylan fan
I only listened to a chunk of it. Not really my style but musically it was interesting and held my attention while I smoked a j. True 60s old man right here
This album started strong and was mostly good, but it felt a bit up and down for me. I really appreciate the lyrics and storytelling, and the music works well with them. Some songs felt long and a bit dragging, probably because there are so many lyrics packed into each track. I enjoyed parts of it, but it didn’t fully click with me all the way through.
Great story teller however not a fan of this genre but I did enjoy this album
He sure can fuck up a harmonica
He has weird wording.
classic bob dylan, reminded me that i wanted to watch a complete unknown
Bob Dylan doing his thing.
My first Bob Dylan album. I enjoyed the folk music, but his voice leaves much to he desired sometimes and at other times it's a perfect fit.
7/10. Really good. Funny Lyrics. Need to be on a specific mood to listen to it.
Good
What does this album have that the other 6 Bob Dylan albums didn't have? Nothing, they are roughly the same, some slightly better or worse than others, but all circling the 3/5 with such powerful gravity. Desolation Row is a good 4-5 minute song that is unfortunately 11 minutes long. I felt held hostage by the mid.
great, more Dylan. Yup, that's still him I guess.
Top 3: Ballad of a Thin Man, Tombstone Blues, Like a Rolling Stone
Inspired most musicians I like after him, and the hits here are hits but largely I’m not super into it.
This was hard for me to get through. I just really did not like his voice and singing style. I like the vibes of the music though. And the harmonica was fun.
Do nine men interpret? "Nine men," I nod. Was Bob Dylan ever so young?! I'm impressed by this crisp album cover. This is probably one of his most famous albums. It's good. There are a lot of Dylan references in Watchmen (both the book and the (bad) movie), so bonus points for that. But not that many bonus points, because this is still a 3 (it's a bit samey, all told). Highlight: 'Like a Rolling Stone' Lowlight: loud harmonica :(
It's fun and I understand why it's good, but I don't think I'd go back to it.
Bob Dylan does be putting out good music
Good album.
Oh no he's growing on me. Like a Rolling Stone was a good way to start the album, and Tombstone Blues was a good follow up. The rest of the album didn't quite reach those highs but it was still pretty solid. I take back what I said about not thinking Boby Dylan will ever get a 4. This is still a 3 though.
Bobby Harmonica is back with another folk tale of adventure, love and betrayal! And with an added flair with the kazoo.
I don't normally think of myself as a Bob Dylan fan, but he's either growing on me or this album was pretty good. :)
Classic but I have a bias against Dylan's vocal tone and style.
nice listen
PJ Harvey did the title track better. See, this is always the problem with Dylan—he does write some good songs, but I’d rather be listening to anyone, literally anyone, else in the world performing them. Makes it quite difficult to figure out how to review his albums. Whatever three stars it is I guess I don't have a ton of time to spend thinking about this right now
Lots of reviewers here give this album a 1 as they say Dylan can't really sing. This is a bit puzzling, since most vocalists on this 1001 list can’t really sing. Isn't that one of the trademarks of rock music? Those who can sing become opera singers; those who can’t join a rock band. There are one or two iconic tracks on this album so a 3 from me. But then,I like Neil Young as well.
a few bangers, Timothy did NOT do him justice
Honestly this is a great ice breaker for anyone trying to get into Dylan.
Don't mind it at all! Liked the literary references and I can appreciate it's a good album but it's a bit too Bob Dylan for me - I'm a Cash girl at heart
The annoying Bob Dylan makes the 1001 Must Hear List yet again. Like a Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, and Highway 61 Revisited carry the album and got some airplay back in the day. The later always fun with the toy whistle ring, had one as a kid. (2.6*s) We’ll be hearing from Mr Zimmerman again before the project is complete.
Bob Dylan is in the stride of his popularity with this album release. Top song to lead it off with some weird but good following tracks. As much as the folk purest hated it, adding in the electric guitar enhanced these tunes. Been pretty split on the Dylan ratings but this record is good enough to Revisit at 3.18 stars. Something sure is happening here on Highway 61 but I don't know what it is, Mr. Zimmerman.
I didn't hate it. I actually saved it to my library, but realistically I'll probably never come back to it. He wasn't as mumbly as I was expecting...I guess that came a little later. He does do words pretty good. 2.51 stars.
I prefer Dylan electrified, and even then, I'm not a fan. "Like a Rolling Stone" is as good as it gets for me on this album. I don't actively dislike much of it—which counts as praise from me—but by the time "Desolation Row" went on and on and on, active dislike was bubbling up.
not bad
This was my 3rd time listening to this album. I think I finally get it! I really didn't mind it, and some of the lyrics were fun. Like a rolling stone is fire obviously.
This is my fourth Bob Dylan album in this journey, and honestly it's the best one I've heard so far. It's definitely a solid studio effort, you've got a particular energy from start to finish. There's a quality in his lyrical process which is appreciated, definitely noticeable how it's set the foundation for future genres. I'm not sure Like A Rolling Stone should be the number 1 song in any list, there's a couple of other songs I feel have more weight on this very album. Maybe I need more than a day to let the lyrics really hit me. I would snag a copy of this for my collection, at the right price. 3.3/5
idk man i like a fair amount of Dylan but this album did nothing for me when he hits, dylan really hits but the misses are real misses too many skips on this for me to ever play this again but out of respect it gets a 3
Liked this a lot better than his bootleg "royal albert hall" album. I still have a hard time with Bob's vocal & harmonica style but I think the lyrics are where his music connects. I'm someone who doesn't listen to lyrics a lot by default, so I'm listening to some Johnny Cash covers of Dylan songs and having an easier time understanding why people love this. Maybe if I keep listening to covers I'll start to appreciate the original songs more...
Desde Leon Gieco hasta Vedder, pasando por Calamaro. Este tipo creó al cantautor moderno. Pura magia en letras e interpretación. 7/10
Its a good album with good lyrics but I can't get past by Dylans inability to sing or hit any note.
3/5 Bob goes electric. Like a Rolling Stone is an evergreen classic. Inspired and influential, iconoclastic yet familiar, warm and fuzzy. I'm not a huge Dylan fan, but this was the peak of his popularity and creativity.
I like the first song on this album so I was excited to hear the rest because I've never heard them. However, I was a little disappointed. The songs are way too long and the harmonica is incredibly too loud.
Bob Dylan is such an amazing songwriter, I wish I liked listening to his music more
First electric outing for Bob Dylan and it's a classic for a reason.
This is the only bearable Dylan album for me. Not too much harmonica
Yeah, not my favorite Dylan album. I know it's a lot of people's, but this one is a bit too tedious for me. I get the import of going electric and the development of The Band, but other than Like a Rolling Stone, the title track, and maybe Tombstone Blues, these are some really forgettable Dylan tracks. Influence 4. Hits 3. Intangibles 3. Quality 4. Just not my jam 3.
bob dylan music is so weird man. great american poetry but really not in a complimentary way. i think the music is good if you're listening to it like you're watching a movie. you've gotta kinda focus on it like you're a guy in the 60's before they invented the gameboy. you've gotta be like a caveman staring into fire and just kinda tune into it and vibe out. i don't think you can just throw it on and i don't think it complements most any other activity besides just listening to it. but there is something *cool* about it. also its very funny to think about 60's foagies dogging on the album for going electric when this is just about the folksiest bullshit i've ever heard. i think Like a Rolling Stone is the closest to music the album gets, it's really quite good. Tombstone Blues and Ballad of a Thin Man are also dope. Desolation Row bears mentioning because it epitomizes all the above observations: it's long and a little droning and if you zone out for a second you're lost. all the actual *musical* parts of the song are little seasonings on top of bobby singing the neat thing he wrote. but, there IS something cool about it 3.3/5 play it again bobby
He's got some good points here. 6 roberts out of 10 lizard wizards
Han kunne stemt gitaren ordentlig da.
Like a rolling stone er en banger.
Mye munnspill, slitsom stemme tidvis. Bra reviews ellers her.
On the one hand, I think this is a much more even effort than Freewheelin', but also I like it less and I think the reason is that it's tedious. I think any one or two songs or three songs in a row is good, maybe even great, but I zoned out of this album. I forgot it was playing. I zoned back in and was like, "oh yeah, there's Bobbo, plodding along and sing-talking about some shit and rhyming that A-A-A-A-A-B-A scheme." And then some harmonica. He is not a great writer. I do not understand how everyone's like, he's such a good writer. He is perfectly passable. If this came out in 2003 nobody would pay any attention (which is of course kind of the point). He was up against shit like Beatles For Sale, of course "no direction home, a complete unknown, like a rolling stone" blew people's minds in a way that "8 days a week" (a perfectly fine song) did not. This is an ok album that was probably a different feeling in 1965 but listening to it today just doesn't seem worth my time.
Pretty good, a couple of drony 8 min tunes but supplemented by more upbeat classics.
Not Dylan's best but still Dylan
Once again, another surprise. I was absolutely sure that Bob Dylan's folk wouldn't sink in for me at all, and again I was wrong. A decent vibe.
This was a good album even if it’s not always what I’m searching for. I can see why some people really enjoy it.
3.5
I see the appeal but struggled to stay in it
Interesting soundJohn Lennon referenced Like a Rolling Stone. I think he may have been influenced a lot by Bob Dylan Pretty enjoyable to listen to. Harmonica is cool Not my usual style, but still interesting. Nice story telling.
I liked this much, much more than the previous Dylan album we reviewed. The songs had much more room to breathe and there were a number of excellent musical elements to each track (less harmonica wouldn’t hurt, though I know that’s blasphemy in the Dylan canon). Gave it multiple spins, which is more than I can say for the last one.
Still find the voice incredibly annoying, but this was solid outside of that.
Was alright. Was pleased to see the last song was actually 10 minutes long and didn't just sound like it had been going on forever
Solid 3
Well, it's definitely Bob Dylan. The increased rock sound is good, I'm still not 100% sold as I'm not a huge folk rock enjoyer. I don't really have a ton of thoughts on this album, it's Dylan. Been a long week and this sort of just faded into the background of my morning. It's fine, nothing that blows me away. I do understand that the lyrics are the magic here. However! I am not and really never have been the type to sit and read a lyric sheet, in depth, while the song is happening. I certainly don't plan on reading everything then going back and trying to parse it again. There are instances where a song is truly remarkable and warrants this level of introspection, but I see that sort of depth as a fun easter egg to an already enjoyable song - with a lot of Bob Dylan it feels like if you don't do your homework there's not really any point in listening. The music itself is quite standard and unless you are "in the know" it is mostly incomprehensible ramblings on a folky instrumental punctuated by organ and harmonica. It is fine and dandy to have songs in your repertoire that require further inspection to really appreciate. It is *annoying* for that to be the case on *every song you have ever recorded*.
Helt ok (förutom Like a Rolling Stone som är toppen såklart)
dnf
Much better than I imagined before (I never listened to him cuz I thought I may hate his work, m sorry)(but I still don’t like him)
Preface, I’m on a work trip the next two weeks so the listening opportunity is limited. Just squeaked in this album. I’m personally not big on Bob Dylan’s kind of stuff. I can acknowledge the quality of production and songwriting but just doesn’t tickle my ears a ton. Loved the harmonica and particularly the organ parts 3.5/5
I am not the BIGGEST Dylan guy but this is some of my favorite Dylan
Man I used to love Bob Dylan. Now all I hear is some dude just whining
I continue to be impressed by Dylan as a lyricist but not so much as a singer or musician.
Some real quality tracks on here.
If I have to hear a harmonica in the next decade, it will be to soon. My family are big Bob Dylan fans, but damn do I wish this could be an album of covers
I have always wanted to listen to this album. Well, maybe WANTED to is the wrong word, needed to but put off is the better term. I know Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter possibly ever, and this has been on every "greatest album of all time" list since before I was born, but I cannot STAND the guy's voice. I've tried but I can't. This album reaffirmed my opinion on his voice, but the songwriting was also very good (outside of the 11 minute closer, christ). 3.5 rounded to 3 because of the voice.
I’ve always shied away from Dylan because I never cared for his voice. However, I enjoyed this whole album. “Like a Rollinng Stone” is the best song on this album.
I thought this once was going to be more promising after such a strong start but nothing lives up to that first track. I just find the rest of it pretty boring and I really don’t get it with Dylan
Like a rollling stone and a whole lot of nothing
I respect the importance of this album and its role in the progression of rock music, and I have listened to it very critically, and even noted a few notable songs, but the fact remains that I am not a Dylan fan, and I would not choose to put this record on if I was looking to listen to some music. It is good and enjoyable to listen to if it was put on, but not the level for me that I would classify it as a 4. It is a 3.5 stars
Not my style.
I can see why it was popular in its time, and I could see a few songs in my regular rotation but overall, not a favorite.
I’ve never been a Dylan fan but doing 1001 albums have given me a greater appreciation of his work. Some tunes on this i recognised and some I didn’t, but I did enjoy listening to it all
Classic
This album has the same energy as a half eaten donut on a table next to a half drank cup of coffee that’s left a round coffee stain on the table. It’s like the small meal started good but quickly went boring and then abandoned where everything became stale.
The most Bob Dylan-y album of all the Bob Dylan albums I’ve heard.
I have never really listened to much Bob Dylan, despite seeing him live twice (both times at festivals). I do generally find his voice too whiney for me, sometimes hurts my head. I did watch The Complete Unknown, which is a brilliant movie, but came out of it going on a Joan Baez kick instead of going down the Dylan road. He is a good song writer and an icon of the music biz. Flipping between a 3 and a 4 with this one, mainly because I’ve had a headache all day and Dylan really is not an artist to listen to when you have one.
Classic album, opens with one of my favorite Dylan songs…Like a Rolling Stone
Enjoyed the album all the way through, even the long finale held my attention. Like a rolling stone is the obvious highlight. Sometimes musically it was rough at moments, and some songs went on a bit long for me. 3 stars.
Dylan is unquestionably the best songwriter of any era. He is a Nobel Laureate for a reason. But, I can't enjoy listening to him sing. It is just terrible. The harmonica is worse. The harmonica playing alone drops my rating by 2 stars. I know that I am not stating anything revolutionary. The popular consensus is correct on Dylan's musicality.
I saw the film "A Complete Unknown" a while ago. A beautiful reflection of the times and beautiful music. Keep rolling ...
Bob innit. Shouldn't be good but really is
I totally get its a brilliant cultural masterpiece but i cannot get on with the mumbling
Monotonous singing and ear-piercing harmonica. Subject of the songs was interesting but I feel like BD tried to stuff as many biblical/historical/literary references in along with folksy phrases. I guess it's just not cool anymore
