With it's elegant and romantic lyrics, perhaps best exemplified by the line "I wanna f**k you hard on a sink.. Step back can't get spunk on a mink" it's no wonder that the world has seen fit to pay Yeezy billions of dollars for the gift that he is to planet earth. Combine that level of romance with the his striving for racial equity and treatment of women in both his lyrics and his personal life and then tack on his clear mental acuity and evolved spirituality and we have the recipe for an international superstar sensation. Wow. This is literally the first time I've listened to a Kanye album. I had no idea it could be like this. Ok back to John Prine now.

Yeezus Christ this is guy is terrible!

Is Yeezus a character or persona that Kanye is taking on, ala Bowie's Ziggy Stardust or Thin White Duke? There seem to be conflicting reports. But either way, it is strange to think about such personas in light of Ye's mental health struggles. Regardless, "Yeezus" was a brash attempt by West to defy expectations and genres and yadda yadda yadda... "On Sight" grabs you right away. It's different. It's interesting. Kanye's flow is great as always. But the content disturbs. The interlude is weird. And then the novelty of the blips wears out at the end. "Black Skinhead" is another attention-grabber, another fresh sound. And while it may at first seem like it's just brash and doesn't really mean much, in the context of Ye's recent antics I wondered the whole time why it was called "Black Skinhead" and whether hints of his coming anti-semitism would be found in the song. People thought it was brilliant at the time though. Jack White even covered it (which is weird). "I Am a God" then launches the concept into a new stratusphere. It's a good thing I read about the Yeezus character/persona/whatever before getting to this track, because listening to this in 2023 after the year West has had would make me uncomforta... actually no wait this still makes me uncomfortable. But it's actually just supposed to be empowering for people? That everyone is a god, not just Kanye/Yeezus/Ye? "New Slaves" then follows up the god complex with some brilliant commentary, and all of this writing and unique sound and production leaves you a little in awe of what West is attempting here, at the very least. Then again, it seems each track has around 10 listed writers and 4+ producers, so how much of it is actually West and how much is the assembled team? It just goes downhill in a mess of production from there, and the album combined with the Wikipedia page breaking it down left me with a headache. The tracks descend into excessive lewdness and seem like a scattered patchwork, with several songs suddenly transforming or interjecting randomness that doesn't fit. And that totally tracks with the description of how this album was produced. But that didn't stop critics from throwing themselves at it with hilarious attempts to explain it's brilliance. Analyses of the album as a whole and individual songs are all over the place but for their common refrains of brilliant, opus, gripping, and even "high-art." But most amusingly, Pitchfork readers voted it both Most Overrated Album of 2013 as well as Most Underrated Album of 2013. My vote is for overrated.

This man is a mentally ill, hate filled, ego driven monster. His music should not be celebrated.

It's hard to listen to this now and not see the mental health problems. It's like a sonic manifestation of his bipolar disorder. Couple that with his recent anti-semitic comments and listening to this album 10 years after it dropped feels more like listening to a cautionary tale rather than experiencing ground-breaking art.

I can’t deny that the music is innovative and fun to listen to. I also can’t deny the shitty, misogynistic lyrics.

At this point it hardly even matters whether the music or the album is any good, because kanye is SUCH a narcissist racist shithead asshole that nothing can ever get past that. 1/5

I'm ashamed to admit how much I like this album, but it's that good, so I have to admit it. Whatever a mess Kanye's public image is, musically he's got his shit together.

On sight

I can see the appeal. Kanye's lines are still solid, the tracks are interesting and experimental. But I've always been torn that this was the album that started pushing the envelope for the sake of pushing the envelope. A lot of the lines were controversial just to be controversial. Maybe that's the point, that he'd achieved a status when he could say anything and people would love it. It wasn't as bad as Donda, but can't say it was more than middling.

Vapid low-effort rapping with reasonably good production, lightly inflected by industrial music (which apparently enough for people to convince themselves this is groundbreaking). I wish Kanye would talk about his dick and his ego a bit more, because there are at least three lines that don't mention these things. 2* unfocused boring shite.

The first tracks just floored me. Wow. Listened again as soon as it finished. Loved the abrasiveness of it, the industrial sounds, the darkness of it.

a disclaimer: kanye is antisemitic. i don't believe in separating the art from the artist because the artist creates art from their worldview. but i did listen to this album, which was my third of his so far, because i want to be thorough. some of this album could be catchy. some of it could also be too repetitive for me to enjoy. it wasn't as long as the other two albums i've heard; kanye was able to be succinct while still getting his message across. and he made some very good choices--using a "strange fruit" sample in "blood on the leaves" is brilliant. his use of electronic separates this album from the other two, and i wasn't surprised to see daft punk's name all over. i'm not a fan of the racism in his lyrics, either. i find it hard to vote for this. i've given him a 1 before on the basis of who he is. he's lucky he isn't getting a solid 1 from me.

If I had to rate this album with one word, it would be: "grating". I have actually known about and enjoyed Black Skinhead for quite a while now. But honestly, most of the rest of the album just didn't do it for me. The sounds are incredibly experimental, especially in the hip hop space, but I just didn't find myself particularly wowed. While I was intrigued and wanted to like it more, I just felt like I was being forced to listen to nails on a chalkboard. Not to mention, Kanye's obvious arrogance and ego pours over into his music and it just makes it really hard to look past them. Honestly, this album is probably the point where Kanye really started letting his ego show -- everything with Kanye is downhill from here. I can see why this album might be on the project for its heavy and experimental use of an industrial soundscape. But while it's an interesting experiment, it's still kind of a failed one, if you're asking me.

I can’t separate the art from the artist here. I like some of his older stuff (Graduation and 808s era) but I can’t with this narcissistic, antisemitic clown. He’s mentally ill and I hope some day will see the errors of his ways. Until then, I can’t take his music seriously.

This review will be similar to the last one (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). I found the backing tracks and samples to be really, really interesting, well chosen, and enjoyable. Absolutely well crafted. (Except maybe for chipmunking Nina Simone's voice?) Again, however, I found Ye's rapping voice and lyrics to be mostly annoying and grating. I think my favorite part of the album was the instrumental last minute and a half of "Hold My Liquor." I would like to listen to this album with just the backing tracks. "Blood on the Leaves" and "Guilt Trip" were more listenable because he did different things with his voice, and I liked the sound of them.

Disappointed. Although I prefer to not have to think about Kanye at all, I hope for some catchy beats. This album did not do that for me. Maybe two fleeting moments of "Ah, here we go. ... Oh, guess not."

I was making a cringey face through much of it but there are a couple of tracks that are incredibly catchy and I enjoyed them despite myself. I especially appreciated the vocal delivery on some of the rap tracks --- an intensity in West's voice and the intake of breath that made the stakes seem high even as the words themselves seemed pretty banal at times. I had to look at the lyrics to blood on the leaves to make sure that I was hearing correctly that the main thrust of West's lyrics are about partying and doing Molly against the sample of Nina Simone's Strange Fruit. But again, the song is hella catchy and I listened several times. I don't want to hear much of this again but I thought about it a lot today.

This is the third Kanye album that has come up. I really hope this is the last. Probably some interesting music in there somewhere, but the ego and denigration makes me too irritated to care. No more please.

Man, it was so much easier to swallow Kanye when his rabid ego-mania seemed charming rather than disruptive and slightly terrifying. But this album is fantastic. The production really holds up. Its aggressive nature makes it feel outside of time and trend for me.

I just don't like his music

woof - what a time to review a Kanye West album. Trying to keep current events out of my revaluation of this album, so bear with me. I loved this album when it was released. I loved his previously album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and this was the polar opposite. For a few months after its release, I would regularly blare this as soon as I woke up (sorry neighbors) while getting ready for work. Lyrically it's a fascinating dissection of racism in society and specifically the fashion industry/business world, deeply problematic in its misogyny, and utterly hilarious at times. There is a great podcast series (Dissect) that covers each track, the musical and lyrical content in depth, but some quick thoughts on each track as I re-listen. On Sight - Instantly establishes the worldview of this album. The sample cut-in is perfect, letting you know immediately what could have been, but clearly defining that this ISN'T what you are going to get. Black Skinhead - (so ironic in light of recent events) This is an absolute hype song. I have this on about 10 different running playlists. I am a God - "HURRY UP WITH MY DAMN CROISSANTS". TBH the screaming does get a little old. New Slaves - The ending of this song gets me every time. The sample is so epic and triumphant. Probably the most interesting song lyrically, commenting on the racism in the fashion industry. Hold My Liquor - Start of a series of tracks with really problematic misogynistic lyrics, but the focus is more on the Yeezy character's issues with alcohol (as the title implies). The production is still so interesting, with the woozy beats and scattered vocal samples, breaking midway through with Justin Vernon's part and some amazing sounding guitar lines. I'm in it - Honestly this song innovates in how misogynistic and grotesque some of the lines are "put my fist in her like a civil rights sign", and the sweet and sour sauce line. It's kind of funny for how extreme. Blood on the Leaves - I know the use of Nina Simone's sample is controversial, but the production is absolutely top notch. The lyrical content, beating a dead horse, is extreme and misogynistic. It paints a portrait of men having affairs without any judgement or critical thought of the man's role in the affair. Guilt Trip - In the context of this album, this song is almost a ballad. Some surprisingly vulnerable lyrics. Send it up - Some people might find the backing track annoying, but like a lot of the sonic choices on the album, I love it. It's like a demented air-raid siren. I find a lot of Kanye's lyrics hilarious, such as "She said can you get my friends in the club? I said can you get my Benz in the club? if not treat your friends like my Benz park they ass outside until the evening' ends" Bound 2 - Absolute banger. My wife doesn't like a lot of this album, but loves this song. Another example of absolutely hilarious Kanye lines "when a real ***** holds you down you supposed to drown" "one good girl is worth a thousand bitches" think about it! "I wanna fuck you hard on the sink, after that give you something to drink" When the second chorus kicks in, it takes everything to a higher level.

Hardcore if such a thing were possible in rap. I can see why people rate this, and the final track Bound2 is an absolute banger, but there's too little of the sweet sampling that powered the college trilogy and too much of Kanye banging on about this and that. Short though.

He's lost his mind since this was recorded and released, to the point that I wasn't sure whether to listen to it. He's clearly not well, and maybe this album, with him framing himself as as deity, could be seen as the start of it. It is not a great album, full of auto-tune and glitchy beats, and with only a couple of memorable songs. Probably the biggest drop from his early work of any artist I have listened to.

As someone who doesn't like Kanye I found this interesting musically. I don't like his style or persona but found the people he brought to make this for him came up with a hard edged sound i liked. Unfortunately I just cannot stand him at all so found the whole experience uncomfortable.

I find it interesting that Kanye has 2 albums listed on this thing whereas other acts which I definitely would have picked before him have only one. Billy Joel has sold over 4-5 times as many records as Kanye West, and he has ONE album on the list. Whereas Kanye has 2. Still, there's a lot of good stuff in the album, but there's a couple of tracks that have some annoying samples in them ("Bound 2" was kinda grating after a while, and same for "Blood On The Leaves"). And Kanye's grunts in his rapping made me think of the SNL parodies that the actors have done of him. That's not good. It's like the original song making you think of the Weird Al parody. It's angry, it's hateful. But not in a good way. And the way Kanye is NOW, it just makes it even more difficult. So as much as I want to be positive about the music, and there are a lot of good things in it, it's not something I am going to bring myself back to.

I discovered Black Skinhead about 6 months ago and that track is f'n amazing. Great beats, massive energy, great lyrics. Of course, what has just happened in the last couple months for Kanye makes me wonder about this song. Still, without recent hindsight, that song kicks serious ass. And a lot of the beats on this album are similarly abrasive; like NIN meats rap. Lyrics abrasive in a different way, but for the most part I respect his intellect and wit in them. Big knock is he's too self-absorbed and pompous on this album - i.e., I am a God (feat. God). GFY Kanye. I always have and will forever hate the man, but I'm changing my tune on his music.

This is a tough album to review. On the one hand, Kanye is a tool (to put it nicely) and that makes me want to not even review it. On the other hand, when he keeps his mouth shut and just sticks to making albums, he is really good at what he does. Yeezus though, isn’t as good as his previous release, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but it does have some great stuff on it. The album has a more industrial feel to it than MBDTF and that comes out right at the opening notes. “Black Skinhead”, and “I am a God” (no Kanye..you’re not) are great tracks. I don’t know what the hell he was thinking in how he used the Nina Simone samples on “Blood on the Leaves”, but that track is almost unlistenable. It has interesting how a pitchfork magazine reader’s poll had this album listed as both the most underrated and overrated album of 2013. Overall, Yeezus made a strong first impression but that didn’t grow with a subsequent listen while MBDTF seems to have more to offer each time I put it on.

Ugh, here we go. Time to separate the art from the piece of shit artist. The presence of autotune makes it even harder. I HATE autotune. That said, after a few listens I started to get his appeal. The music/samples are fantastic. The lyrics, well, what an asshole. But his rapping style is impressive. Going to call it a 3 - autotune is an automatic -1 for me. Being an asshole is at least an additional -1. Standout tracks: On Sight, Black Skinhead, I am a God (except for the obnoxious screaming), New Slaves (until the autotune started - that's a common thread here: song starts cool and then there's some strange twist at the end), I'm In It, Send It Up.

The history of the music industry is full of assholes who produced great music. This asshole produced this shit. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Oof this is a difficult album to review as it's a deliberate step away from radio friendly pop Hip Hop in Kanye's previous My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (which I think is overall a better, more enjoyable album). However this album pretty clearly sets out to be as challenging as possible - from "I am a God" to "Black Skinhead" its a direct challenge to the listener at times - not even mentioning the deliberately bad Bound2 video which went over everyone's heads on release. Kanye's rapping here as well is clearly challenging, he's never been the greatest lyricist however on MBDTF his voice is clearly another instrument or vocal layer which he fits into the songs so well. Here his voice is almost at odds to the music to give more of a feel of clashing and rambling style. Overall I fully understand why people don't like this album, however taken in respect of Kanye's work and life it's a defining piece of work. That's not to say it's crazily enjoyable - I'd give 3.6 overall. Mostly due to what the album speaks to rather than a head nodding experience.

This isnt Kanye's best album, quite far from. It has maybe 2 good songs the rest is pretty meh. I dont like the overuse of autotune

Oh boy, Kanye West, he has had quite a tumultuous and controversial public life these past couple of years. It's getting harder and harder be able to separate the artist from the music. He is a narcissistic massive piece of shit who needs mental help and to be out of the spotlight for a while. His views are reprehensible and way out of line. I enjoyed his early work, the first couple of albums. This album is really awful and it just shows how much he has fallen off professionally and personally. Garbage person, garbage album.

Zero tolerance for Nazis. I don’t care if it’s only .11 cents per song, my money’s not going to support a self-proclaimed Nazi. Instead, I streamed Yo La Tengo’s “I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass” and “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One” (As an aside, how is this record not on the list???? One of the greatest indie-rock albums of all time) I encourage you to do the same when a Kanye record gets generated for you: Find an album you love from a Jewish artist and stream that instead.

Hmm, "Black Skinhead" really hits different in late 2022 doesn't it? I was listening to this album a lot in 2014/2015, but then it fell out of rotation for me. Instrumentally, there's a lot to love here. However the VERY strong Death Grips influences on the best of the songs (On Sight, Black Skinhead, New Slaves) make it seem a but unoriginal now. I wasn't really familiar with DG at the time, maybe if I was I wouldn't have been so into this album. Lyrically, I think some of Kanye's worst are on here. There's some downright stupid bars, a lot of unnecessary sexism/misogyny, and some really terrible auto tune. The Billie Holiday sample on Blood on the Leaves is a bit of a headscratcher too. I know he was probably trying to spark controversy, but I don't see what a song about Jim Crow era lynchings adds to a song that appears to be about a divorce. Maybe I'm missing something? I like New Slaves as a song, but it's strange to think that we've reached a point as a culture where "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower" is considered a good hook, maybe even a deep one. Fav songs: On Sight, Black Skinhead, New Slaves. The rest are OK but a bit forgettable.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME TWO KANYE ALBUMS IN A ROW?!! I see much more negative reviews on this one than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, yet this has the same issues that one seemed to have for me, so I suppose we'll see. Okay, just listened, and man this is a step down, at least for me. I will say the pros is songs still get you enjoying them in the moment, so he still succeeds there, but nothing here sticks with me, and the production has not increased, in fact I'd say stuff like rather than clever samples and an orchestral sound we have this screech-y electronic sound with way too much autotune. Can I hear modern rap in this album? Absolutely, but not a compliment. It also feels worse as we go. Some of these lyrics are also pretty hilariously bad. This is Eminem's level of pun cheesiness for some of these. Just as self indulgent, but I don't see why this album gets that critique and not his other albums. I just don't know what to say. This is alright at best, aggravating at worst, but at the end of the day this was just unnotable. Perhaps if I was very into rap at the time of this release I would of seen the revolution being played, but all I hear is songs made out of dog barks are the drills in the car repair shop while a sex obsessed narcissist knows he can say whatever and will get a perfect score and millions of sales. Yet, I struggle to give this a 1 star. Truly an anomaly. I think it will indeed fall into that 1 star category though. I think fleeting memories of Kanye's work I do like will suffice for me.

Even more than *My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy*, this record is the ultimate postmodern masterpiece Kanye West left us. *Yeezus* is eerie, weird, gritty, inventive, layered, dadaist, hilarious (sometimes unwittingly, but does it matter?), angst-ridden, dark, manic, megalomaniac, self-deprecatory, ironic, earnest, dumb, bright, noisy, melodic, mellifluous, groundbreaking, flavored, tasteful, distasteful, mysterious, nocturnal and unpredictable. This album is *absurd*, in all the senses of the word--absurdly good and absurdly nonsensical all at the same time. The scope of different emotions it can make you go through (some of them unsettling) is potentially infinite. It's a definitive artistic statement, blurring the lines between genius and madness. Obviously, it's quite difficult to enjoy listening to this album today. Given what Kanye has become in the ten years that separate us from the release of *Yeezus*, it's near-impossible not to think about the freak the man is in 2022, even as you listen to that gem he recorded in 2013. If only because some of the seeds of his current downfall were actually sown during that period... At the time, artistry still had the upper hand, not delirious episodes fuelled by paranoid takes about world politics (at least that we know of). But the equation is reversed today, sadly. Kanye should take his prescription pills, and steer away from despicable far-right rhetorics and conspiracy theories. The "genius" is very much the ultimate fool here, a pawn in a larger shameful game in which crooked politicians and shameless business interests have used him to unsavory ends. A tale of hubris if there is one. That being said, and in a somewhat strange way, close to schadenfreude, I actually hope West keeps on self-sabotaging his career, one that's quite meaningless *now* anyway, and that he goes bankrupt as a result. He needs to pay for the negative and even potentially dangerous impact his actions and sickening public statements have made in America. Ironically, him being the sacrificial scapegoat of a rotten society that direly needs to cleanse its political sins would unwittingly be akin to an artsy gesture--some sort of real-time "happening" that would at least tell everyone a lot about the dangers of putting money, fame and ego first, instead of ethics, decency or empathy. I think this here is the heart of the "Tragedy Of Kanye". I just pray he doesn't seriously hurt anyone in the course of his demise, just as he keeps on hurting himself. I can't listen to *Yeezus* this year, not with what the man has become. But once we're rid of his disgusting public persona, maybe we'll be able to later return to the many stellar hip hop albums he gave us in the past, and enjoy them for what they are. At least if nobody else suffers as he goes down in flames... I think I'm worried, though. Does anyone else feel that way in here? Like Morrissey, I long for the good old days when Kanye was just a ridiculous egomaniac, before he held or started expressing abhorrent views. This album dates from the harmless egomaniac era and it's easy to see how it drew critical acclaim and had mass appeal. A mad mix of genres and tempos, but catchy and engaging throughout, this is an exhilarating listen. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Black Skinhead Date listened: 12/11/22

What an album. I've loved kanye's music ever since this generator sent me MBDTF, which I would say is a stronger record, mostly due to the lackluster lyricism that unfortunately dropped this album to a 4. Love the production from Daft Punk, and how the project hangs together (the album was overseen by Rick Rubin) and the concise, 40 minute runtime works fantastically. The cold and industrial sounds (a total change from the grandiose rap of MBDTF) conjer compelling grooves and hooks throughout, and when the synthesizers give way to a beautiful, real emotion the album is given a whole other level of sonic depth and emotional resonance. Overall a record that is likely to only better with time. A great record.

This sometimes is my favorite Kanye album depending on my mood. I could not re-listen to this after his most recent crazy-ass rants and blatant racism.

The album is alright. The beats are good. The lyrics and rapping are unremarkable. It is better than a 2, but not really a 3. I'll round down

As much as I like and defend Yeezus, I listened to it this time in a context wider than Kanye's discography and with a little more attention. And sadly, that makes the album come across as markedly uneven. The fusion Kanye attempts - sex, race, noise - is interesting, but none of the raps are particularly compelling and the production is the real star. Put it on, bob your head, don't use it too hard. That's the approach I'll take in the future, at least.

Urgh. This is October 18th, 2022. I received this album on the generator on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022. I initially paused the generator because I wasn't that familiar with Kanye West's work, so I thought I should spare some time to acquaint myself with his ouevre and give him a more considered take. The next day, Kanye paraded around in a jumper saying WHITE LIVES MATTER. I immediately lost all enthusiasm for writing this review, and indeed just the basic capacity for trudge. He then followed it up with extremely ugly anti-Semitic posts on Instagram and Twitter. I'm not including every event over the last fortnight where Kanye proved himself both nasty and moronic, but the principal effect on me was to deter my review of Yeezus. Every time I tried to write this, I would just stare at the screen, not typing but constantly grimacing. I was worried this album would break me, and I'd quit the generator because Kanye West was an imbecilic cunt. Still, that which does not kill me blah blah blah (by the by, the context of that quote from Nietzsche always gets dropped: he actually says that military view of life is "That which does not kill me blah blah blah"). And I'm reviewing an album, not the person who made it, so perhaps I should swallow up my grievances and just assess the music. Apparently, this is Kanye's dark, challenging album, his raised middle digit to a world that just wants him to perform nice songs for people to dance to. But wehat nobody told me was how slight, how superficial and how meagre this album really is. The music, despite all the advertised influences of early 90s industrial metal (which was never that transgressive in actuality), is just a bit of electronica. It's acceptable, but it's hardly inspired. But that's not the fatal symptom of the album. The album's tubercular cough is (wait for it...) Kanye West, or more specifically the fact that the stances he expresses are incoherent, confused and, in summation, boring. Yes, one can point to his willingness to pick at the scab of affluent segregation in New Slaves (actually, is that especially resonant to the poor, that salesmen try to sell Kanye high-end goods?), but such outrage becomes distinctly undercut by lines like "Eatin' Asian pussy, all I need was sweet and sour sauce". Indeed, there's a vicious misogyny throughout this whole album, but there's none of the illicit thrill of saying the unsayable that, say, Eminem or Ice Cube were able to muster in their best work. It's just Kanye trying to sound like what he thinks a rapper should sound like. It's the sound of a limited man, of a wimpy schoolboy trying to impersonate the bigger boys in a doomed attempt to become popular. And it stings that a work this mediocre is what ruined my fortnight. Anyway, that's the album out the way. I hope Kanye will find it apposite if I review him as a person in the form of a poem. Kanye West is a cunt. A cunt is what he is. He possesses labia majora and he evolved to imbibe jizz. Once a month he menstruates. For his clitoris you may hunt. I know the term is ugly, but the cunt is just a cunt.

On one hand I was pretty engaged for the whole record which I didn’t expect. On the other, Kanye is a douche (at least it’s the impression I get through his lyrics). The music/musicality is definitely strong and there’s no denying the words hit, but it’s just not my style.

This is a weird listen in light of his recent comments. It's hard for me to separate the art from the artist. I'm just annoyed by West boasting for 60 minutes.

It's tough to split up the album from the artist. I hate to assume that this album is an excellent piece of modern hip-hop made by someone who may not deserve to be recognized by anything (independent of any possible psychological problem, this is not a forever excuse for everything Ye has supported over the years). I'll concentrate on the Wikipedia page that clarifies that this album is much more a result of collaborative work from many artists than Ye himself.

Wow, I liked this so much more than "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy". I might even conceivably revisit this in the future! Minus one star for Kanye being a knob and the badness of "I'm in It" Fave track - "Hold My Liquor", I reckon.

His last great album. Industrial and cold beats fit perfectly with his obsession about rapping about how many people he's shagging - like that guy at school how definitely had a girlfriend, she's just at another school and you definitely wouldn't know who she is. It was a brave move to do a dark, industrial, electro album when all his previous albums sold so well. This was the first KW music I was exposed to, when it made the critic's lists upon release. I listened to Black Skinhead many times as I remember.

After the success of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy KW decided to piss off his fans by putting out an intentionally abrasive and off-putting album. He's quoted as "I got to fuck shit up" and "I'm gonna take my ball home". There's no doubt that this egotistic narcissist is brilliant, but does the emperor have no clothes? He's so full of contempt for his fans that it's really hard to like this guy. This album is seriously over-produced, with literally 4-8 producers on EACH song. I view this album like how I view his forays into fashion where he intentionally puts out really fugly clothing and sells it at exorbitant prices to his gullible fans. I'm not gonna bite.

I have no idea what is good about this. Sounds like a random number generator plugged into a sampler. Lyrically horrible. I took the time to read the lyrics to find out if there is some hidden glory, but it's all Kayne bragging. "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower". This is made for 13 year old boys.

Impressive beats and production. What really drags down the album is Kanye West. I never really liked his style of rapping and I find Kanye uneven. Sometimes he's great but other times I think there's so many better rappers than Kanye and that's even when ignoring his personality. I think I'm sticking to other hip-hop artists instead of Kanye as I've never found anything he made that's interesting.

Pros: Good heavy beats on a lot of the tracks. Kanye has a great rhythm to his vocals. A lot of interesting unique sounds from song to song. Each song is pretty different from the others. The album has a different sound than most rap albums. I actually like the pulsating background beats more than the front music on a lot of the songs. I’d like to see someone take the background sounds and beats and put something else on top of them. Cons: Too many sound effects, it can get a bit cacophonous. Sometimes within a song, there are jarring changes in the feel and sound as it changes from a heavy rap, to a soft instrumental, to some random sound effects. Too much self-aggrandizing narcissism. I also just can’t help but think about how much of a crazy mofo Kanye is while listening to his music.

Never listened to his albums before cos he's such a bell end but this was actually pretty good. He's famous for a reason.

West seemingly by design makes separating the man from the music harder than average. I thought My... Fantasy was stronger than this overall, among his mid-career output in this pre-off-the-rails phase. Crazy inventive stuff with beats and samples and the lyrics are as always clever but despite nods to black issues is there really much to it other than braggadocio and this curdled sexual Lothario routine?

2nd favourite Kanye album. After the luxury of Twisted Dark Fantasy, the decision to strip back the beats and make it more industrial was a great move and really moved things forward. The album drips with energy. It moves me. The level of arrogancy is great. God features on a track. French bakers wrote a letter because of this album. The pacing and shifts in energy of "Blood on the Leaves" is perfection.

As much as I love hip-hop, this album doesn't deserve anything above 1. Utter garbage. Destroyed my hip-hop rating... Terrible.

I liked some of the more fractured musical parts of this, but the voice grates quite quickly and the lyrics are awful. Not just bad, but actually just grim. I get that ‘Yeezus’ is playing a character, but it’s hard to divorce this from his overblown public ego. With decent (pun intended) lyrics, this could have the makings of a good album. More queasy that Yeezy, unfortunately.

I enjoyed the beats more than the lyrics. Strange Fruit was an odd choice of sample. There's a sense of drama that builds up. This may have been amplified as I listened to the album whilst a workman was drilling up the road outside. The Daft Punk contribution added a little humour. I couldn't hear Rik Rubin's efforts.

I haven't listened to a lot of Kanye, but I've heard his earlier albums. This was just unlistenable, and I'm disappointed I couldn't make it past the first four tracks. This is my 271st album on the list and the second one I couldn't make it through. The first, Lana Del Rey's Chemtrails is also a recent addition, but I will acknowledge Kanye does belong on this list and maybe just Yeezus isn't the album that should get him there. 1/5.

one of my favorite albums of all time. great lyrics, but genuinely perfect production. i dont think we’ll ever see an album like this again, hold my liquor and bound 2 are top 5 and blood on the leaves is top 1. to get the most out of it, play it over headphones and turn it up until the bass plays through your whole body. this listen i great to appreciate i’m in it a lot more, assassin is so good on his feature, i’m shocked i havent listened to anything of his before. this album is quite divisive, and for good reason, but to me it’s a true masterpiece. my favorite album we’ve heard so far, will likely be in my top 5 for the entire list.

As much as I hate Kanye's ego, the first two tracks have me interested. BLKKK SKKKN HEAD has a great, light swing with very grounding textures. New Slaves has a big juicy hook. Bound 2s music video is stupid, but the song is alright. pretty solid record on the whole. a lot of musical texture to give it body.

he's always been mentally ill and a mediocre artist on his best days

A hip-hop album that seems to want to be an industrial or noise rock album. The bombastic rhymes are well matched by the bombastic samples and the “more is more” production choices, sound effects and beats. Its popularity is what it is, one supposes, but this fails to land for me.

I love how abrasive and aggressive it is, it almost sounds retro futuristic from an alternate universe. But man, bound 2 is just so bad that it spoils my enjoyment from the end of the album. Oh well.

Very Dope, unhinged follow up to MBDTF, probably closer to a 4.5 than a 5 though.

Some very nice and creative sounds in there, but then the singing starts and I just can't stand hip-hop (sorry).

The best part about this album: it's only about 40 minutes long. What could be done to improve this album: make it 30 minutes. What could be done to make my life better: not having had listened to this album. RIP Hip Hop.

Well a quick glance at the reviews on give it either 1 or 5 stars so theres quite a lot of polarization. I remember the music press gave it 4s and 5s... here goes...Ok...I like a lot of the beats and dark electronica that backs lot of the tracks...it gives it a sense of urgency...however I I can't get past the 'pussy, dick, nigga" lyrics that permeate 90% of the album and the nauseating ego on tracks like 'I am a god" 2 star for the backing tracks.

This is probably my favorite Kanye album. On sight and black skinhead are all time bangers and bound 2 is also hella good

As Ye's most controversial album of all time, I think that it’s pretty cool. The first thing that I want to talk about is the production since it's such a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I do like the weird production on tracks like "New Slaves" and "On Sight". However, I hate th fact that on some tracks he just put these samples that are just so pointless. It was cool seeing Travis Scott working with Ye, I'll give the album that. This cover is up there with Ye's best ones. It looks like one of those kind of covers that people upload when the official album isn't even on streaming services. It's sad that this album didn't get an official vinyl release since it would be cool to see if they'd change the cover for it, but you should sadly just dream. I've heard some people complain about the lyrics on this track, mostly on "Black Skinhead" and "I'm In It", but I don't really see the problems with them. Sure, it’s annoying hearing him whine about not being accepted in the clothing industry and the Asian pussy line can give you a sour taste after (I'm so fucking funny), but I don't really think that Ye was trying to make the most lyrical album that he has ever made. Also, this definitely does not feel like an album. I'm not saying that 10 tracks is bad, since that is how many tracks I think an album should have. The thing is that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had this huge feeling about it, it literally felt like the album was made over an entire decade. So it feels like this was a mixtape just to have people not wait fucking 6 years for The Life Of Pablo, but I'm not complaining. Favourite track would have to be "Blood On The Leaves". The production is amazing, with the huge horns just blazing through the track. Ye just sounds hungry as a motherfucker, especially on the second verse. Least favourite track would have to be "Bound 2". It's not that it's sonically bad, I just don't think that the track fits the album. The entire album has very obnoxious production which can be good or bad, and this feels like a scrap over from an old Ye album. So, I really think that this album is the most underrated by Ye. 9/10

Tough to judge this one. If there were no lyrics then this would easily be a 4 and possibly a 5. There's even some great wordplay if you ignore the actual content. However, the lyrics range from inane to offensive and really brings the whole thing down. 2.5 stars.

While honestly there are some great beats on this album, and this album should be on this list, I do think that it is completely overrated, as is the conceited artist who made it.

This is my 25th album and it's the second by this overrated tabloid fodder. Apparently his music changed with every album. Pity the lyrical content is still just as tawdry. He's either bragging or whining. I didn't have to listen to this. Nobody does.

An instant classic, remember the day this came out. Was never a big fan of TLOP so this one is where my love affair with Kanye ended. If only he stuck with the power and political critique over the bible thumping.

I'm super conflicted by this album, and I'm not the only one. In Pitchfork's 2013 Readers Poll, Yeezus was named both the Most Underrated and Most Overrated album of the year. The solo follow-up to MBDTF, Kanye's magnum opus, doesn't quite measure up. There's the usual helping of inane lyrics (Does Kanye know that 300 didn't feature any Romans?), the overuse of autotune, and the braggadocio, which he does better than anyone else (just ask him). But there's also the delightful use of obscure samples expertly married with cutting-edge beats, punctuated by excellent collaborations and features. This album also features the most Kanye song he's ever put together: Blood on the Leaves, a catchy tune about love and divorce where Ye spends half a verse talking about the cost of his wardrobe. Pretty standard stuff, except it's all happening on top of a sample of a 1965 tune about lynching that's been called one of the most important songs of the 20th century. The thesis of this album, made by a self-professed evangelical Christian who gives the middle finger to both Catholics and Baptists, and oh yeah, the thing is called YEEZUS, is that nothing is off-limits for Kanye. Best track: Bound 2

It’s hard to separate Kanye’s music from his batsh*t behavior to give a fair evaluation. Even when you succeed, you can’t help but feel this album is wildly anti-women and there is much less irony to I Am A God than we’d like to believe.

I LOVE this album. A lot. Too much. Like, it isn't perfect and a few songs are just fine (e.g. Hold My Liquor and Guilt Trip) but when it hits it really hits. Some of my all-time favorite ye tracks come off of this album (New Slaves, Bound 2, Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves, in that order) and the whole things is just a vibe. I'm In It and On Sight are pretty good, too. It just encapsulates ye's attitude and lo-fi era perfectly (I Am a God) and the lyrics are consistently hilarious and iconic. It's just. Great.

As a guy who doesn't particularly like rap, I enjoyed this album. I probably won't revisit it but I'll speak highly of it if it comes up in conversation.

Whilst admirable for a mainstream artist to reinvent their sound so dramatically from album to album, Yeezus mostly fails to land and is a somewhat drab affair which becomes a bit of a chore to listen to. There are undoubtedly moments of inspiration - I’m In It segueing into Blood on the Leaves is a thrilling sound and Black Skinhead a thumping statement - but lyrically, Ye isn’t the greatest rapper and his content focusses too much on debasing women and name checking fashion labels to engage the listener. There are better Kanye albums.

Delving into one of the two most overrated figures in hip-hop of the last twenty years, we get Yeezus, an album inexplicably on this list when Death Grips doesn't even get a footnote. Death Grips are the most influential act of the 2010s - indisputably. The barriers they lowered between bedroom acts and professional musicians, the relationship they cultivated with the internet, the approach to abrasive textures that led to a resurgence of interest in industrial and noise influences on everything from metal to pop. Death Grips changed the game, and Kanye casually cribbed their notes three years later in a messy facsimile. Is this a bad album? No. But it isn't original and it has some of Kanye's worst lyrics on it. So why is it on here?

Jesus Christ, this man is an arse. I really don't get why this album is held in such esteem. People calling it ahead of it's time? In what sense? Created essentially by Daft Punk, sampling (nothing wrong with sampling) earlier music and then he just puts some juvenile, misogynist words over the top. Plenty of people already doing that. The lyrics aren't anything special and frequently neither complement nor disturb or disrupt the music, which makes me wonder what they are for. It never ceases to amaze me how people get taken in by the self-promotion of such mediocrity. There really ought to be an option for zero stars.

I don't know Kanye West or Ye, or whatever his name is now, personally, but I've always thought he was a complete bell-end. But I put that aside in order to listen to this album. I actually really enjoyed the first 4 tracks I thought they were really interesting musically. And then it started to get a bit annoying. I still think he's a bell-end.

this was actually terrible. i like some of kanye’s music, but this album literally had no redeeming qualities. it was literally just sending the same boring message but in somewhat different forms? it was just bad and literally anyone could do this, not impressive in any way.

What's the appeal? The music is abrasive and just terrible, the rapping is... mediocre at best when it's not shitty. The lyrics??? Holy hell.... unimaginative, utterly stupid and sophomoric and distasteful. I mean, other than that I loved it. WTactualF Again: what is the appeal? Anywhere. This should have been a perfect album for me since I'd never heard Kayne before, I was legitimately excited. For exactly one minute. Now I know. I never need to hear this again. Ever. E.V.E.R. One of the most painful and disgraceful albums I've ever listened to front to back if not *the* worst. 0/10 not worthy of anything close to a star.

The only good thing I can say about this album is that I found the sampling of Bound 2 to be groovy. Everything else was really bad. Like, the 'I feel gross and should shower now' kinda bad. I regret listening to this.

I don’t know what to say except that he deserves to be in prison ! I didn’t listen to all the lyrics but some were disgraceful and I can’t understand why any women would contribute to his earnings by buying his “music” if you can call it that. I gave up !!

Hardest album to rate yet. Immediate reaction was not good. 1 star. But it grew on me after a couple of listens. 2 stars. A couple more listens and I was noticing some over-arching narratives and 3 stars. I had to come back to it later in the day as it was nagging at me. Could it get even more stars? No. On a refreshed listen I was back toward my initial reaction. Best be done with it and give it a 2 but I feel like it may pull me back in.... Highlights: Hold My Liquor and Bound2

Hi: On Sight, I Am A God, Hold My Liquor Lo: I'm In It, Blood On The Leaves Kanye experiments with a variety of musical textures, which the variety of are truly the highlight of this album. Lyrically, West also makes some pointed social commentary (New Slaves, Hold My Liquor), through some well-crafted rhymes and verses that paint a vivid word picture. A running theme throughout is the \"oh wait i\" gag where Kanye would reflect on the previous verse and try to change the narrative, which got old quick. Any musical prowess displayed is ruined by use of autotuned vocals, an aesthetic choice that just grates on my nerves. And at the end of the day, Kanye just sounds like an edgelord, interspersing overly offensive & racist lyrics that distract and do a disservice to the whole message. 2 stars.

It's a brilliant album Sure Kanye is a fucking nut case and the blatant misogyny is all over this album but I have to give him his due it a masterclass in breaking Hip-hop norm

The production on this LP is pristine - massive walls of synths cascading into quieter passages with some hard-turn samples thrown in for good measure. The bars usually rise to meet the occasion, but there are some lyrics that stick out like a sore thumb with their datedness or slightly cringe viewpoints.

Another modern classic from Yeezy; the kind of thing that makes you say "what was he thinking?" on the first listen, but gets more compelling every time you come back to it. It's raw, arrogant, and unfiltered in the inimitable Kanye style. How many other artists could assert "I Am a God" without sounding the least bit corny? His incredible success is tempered only by his own self-destructive tendencies - on "Hold My Liquor" (possibly my favorite on the album, although "Send It Up" is a strong contender), Kanye reenacts a superstar's bender, the sort of horrific "the rules don't apply to me" story that make up a superstar's day-to-day. (And what good is being a superstar if you don't have some Mike Dean synths to back you up?)

3.75/5. Honestly, I expected more. This album was definitely more experimental than I thought it would have been. The sounds are definitely different and cool.

I might be the one of the last people to be unfamiliar with Kanye West's music. This album surprised me. I was not epecting the depth and poignance of the lyrics. He is really talented in his use of language and rhymes. The music definitely is in service to Kanye's words and that's OK. The music did not grab me on first listen. The production is spare and unconventional to me but I think with more listens would come greater appreciation. 4 stars

Shit music and about as catchy as a Sunderland beach ball. Didn't think there was a stand out track so it's not even a filler album. Just utter rubbish. I feel harsh on college dropout now because this is shitter and I gave that a 1.

That was garbage. The music itself was mediocre, the rhymes and techniques were only occasionally engaging (I mean seriously, ending multiple back-to-back verses with the same word is like kindergarten-level prose) and the content of the lyrics was completely pointless. I honestly thought the album was meant to be self-satirizing, like some sort of commentary on how ludacris celebrity life has become, but alas I was just grasping for ways to give the album more credit than it really merits.

I wasn't ready for how much I'd like this, so creative. Favorite track is Black Skinhead

I don't get it. I just...I don't get it. I liked the Steve Miller sample on "Guilt Trip", some of the lyrics were clever, but mostly, I just don't get it. I'm glad I listened to it, but I'm not really sure I'll ever go back to it.

Loved how Kanye flipped the sound from twisted completely and went with an almost industrial, digital feel for this album. It’s the hip hop version of what Nirvana did between Nevermind and In Utero. At points the beats are extremely minimal and also jarring - he has no fear in just switching it up mid track and throwing out jump cuts left right and centre. Daft Punk produced the first three tracks and what a difference to the DP sound on RAM that year. Lyrically this album is self aware but also you can see where “this” Kanye is heading. It’s cold and challenging in many parts too and you have to respect the sheer balls this guy has. “As soon as they like you, make em unlike you”

I really liked Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the other Kanye West album we had so far.-This one I absolutely hate. Probably Kanye would say something like the unenlightened not understanding the genius vision. Be that as it may, the vision sounds horrendous. I'm hating both the bad rap as well as the minimalist techno - both styles I'm not generally a fan of to begin with - and couldn't finish a single song.

Yeezus is on the list? Why is Yeezus on the list? I guarantee most listeners on this site will not give this album a generous rating. Honestly I don't blame them; Yeezus is far from West's strongest album and marks his exploration into more experimental hip hop. It is also, in my opinion, his most confident album. It is oozing with machismo and loud production. West wants to make sure you really hear him. Well, I heard it. And it's pretty damn good. Not great, but pretty good. It loses a bit of steam after New Slaves and takes a while to pick back up, but the product as a whole is undoubtedly a complete product. Here's the kicker about this release: every West album from here on out would be a mess upon rollout. The Life of Pablo would see post-release changes to the tracklist, Ye was lead by two controversial singles that are not on the album, Jesus Is King kept getting pushed back surrounding listening parties and a film, and, lastly, Donda is the most recent of West's bizarre releases with more pushbacks and listening parties. Here's the truth: at the time of Yeezus, Kanye West was THE hip hop artist. With a unique creative vision and total freedom in how he approaches his work, the music industry had little-to-no control over him after this album. This is a benchmark in West's career in more than one way, and I have no doubt that his mental health had some part to play. But, all in all, West is unmatched in the current landscape of hip hop: this album could be considered proof of that. I'm tired, you're tired, Jesus wept.

Scientists are still working on determining the precise point Yeezy went from a genius disguised as an idiot to an idiot disguised as a genius, but Yeezus could very well be Kanye West at his most audacious—well, at least when it comes to his music and not being a general shithead. Between the aggressive electronic "oh shit, Death Grips is pretty good" sound and the conviction with which he delivers his rhymes (going all in whether it's frustration over bigotry or borderline moronic wordplay), it's hard not to be a captive audience to this record. He goes out swinging on more than one occasion (I'm In It is basically all of the album's lesser qualities congealed into a single track), but the rest is a reminder of how someone like Kanye could end up in his fucked-up position in the first place.
