Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Clearly a controversial and important artist of his time. Some interesting use of samples and melodic moments in and amongst the racial confrontational language, not to mention unnecessary sexism. Black skinhead is quite a significant hook laden track but I don’t hear musical development, I hear celebrity product placement.
Umm, I’m not sure if I like him or not, i listened in the car - the only song I really liked was Bound2, if I listened again, maybe I might like this more?
I have to admit although everyone regales this album as amazing, I don't really like the sound overall. I also know this is probably some revisionist history because Kanye kind of lost the thread there with his music, and I know he pushes the envelope which I do admire, but it wasn't my jam.
I'm going to keep this commentary focused strictly on the music since when it came out, that was all we had to grade Ye on at the time. The ego on this album is absolutely next level and kinda takes some of the enjoyment out of it, but the production goes just as hard. Some of the lyrics are a little silly ("hurry up with my damn croissants!"), but Kanye usually has a few laughable bars in his songs, so that's not so surprising. The hype around this album when it came out was crazy, but honestly, I don't think there's anything groundbreaking here. A bit of a style switch up from his previous records, but it's nothing revolutionary. I'm more surprised that College Dropout was dropped from the official list but this remained, while Late Registration and Heartbreaks & 808s never even made the cut.
i really love some of these songs but I can’t give a good note to a n@zi
On the surface I like the music, it is catchy and pretty. Then Kanye raps over it and in some ways really ruins it. He no doubt has smart references in his raps, but its all about how amazing he is and really over the top sexual lyrics. I am find with kinky but the way he talks about it is so disrespectful. This is such much of rap music I don't like, I am God and bitch's be crazy. You are talented Kanye I think by this point you could write songs about something a little deeper. Also I fully know there is a lot of racial and cultural context in this music that I don't understand and don't connect with. But I also see so much of it as hypocritical...New Slaves, he talks about corporations taking advantage of Black people to make money...what was his clothing line doing????? Blood on the Leaves....being a celebrity and fame and money ruining relationships...you married Kim Kardashian and now control your new woman with money???? I am God....Jesus called and I told him I was counting my millions and he said cool, but you are a godly man...Have you read the bible? He is such a hypocrite and maybe that is why him and MAGA and Trump get along, he can say and do whatever he wants but is above it all and better than it all because it is him doing it.
I've never listened to Kanye before this project. Artistically, I think he has an interesting sonic palette. But his raps did not make me a fan. I'm fine with graphic sexuality. But the way Kayne does it on this album just feels yucky.Pretty much felt like the album is vulgar, misogynistic, and racist. If that's what he was going for then, good job? Mission accomplished? On top of that he calls himself a God? Look... I understand that part of rap music is all about puffing up your ego but this is pretty ridiculous. Not into this.
His music is always so creative and impeccably produced, and these song structures are pretty fantastic. But he's also SO full of himself and misogynistic in his lyrics on this, and he's a really hard person to take seriously because of how he's behaved and also for calling himself a god. This is a really hard one to rate. Musical quality is close to a 5, lyrics are close to a 1.
Listens 1.75 Standout Tracks: I Am A God How big must Kanye's fucking ego be to make a song like I Am A God and compare himself to Jesus Christ. I was going to talk about the fact that he recently apologized (for what its worth) by taking out a full page ad talking about his mental health and how he's working on it and was in a dark place. I guess that's a good thing. Buying a full, front page ad in a newspaper is still pretty batshit insane. It reads more attention-grabbing than genuine seeking forgiveness for being a shitty person. Positives: It's only 40 minutes long. The samples are certainly unique. Negatives: Massive ego stroking. Shitty album cover. Shitty album name. Most of the songs are boring.
Can’t decide whether KW is a genius or just bonkers. Judging by recent history, probably the latter. This album is conceptual with brilliant highs but also moments where I was questioning why I was listening to essentially drivel. KW is a real piece of shit and this is emphasised by his lyrics in most of the songs - I got kind of bored by the number of times he either compared himself to some sort of deity or described his sex life - we get it, you’re a narcissistic womaniser! That does make the times when the lyrics do hit that bit more special, though. I liked almost all of the features on the album. The beats and sampling were questionable at times, but when they hit it is great. The rapping was good, some of the ‘singing’ not so good. I can only give this a 4/10
I don't need 40 minutes of this, where this is "Kanye West rapping about how great he is and how he can fuck any woman he wants". I like his earlier stuff, but this is just grating. I'm giving this a two star for production value only. For anything that was only Kanye, this merits only one star.
Honestly? The beginning of his downfall. I never listened to him again after this.
Can you seperate the art from the artist? That was my hope when giving this a listen. There were times when I thought, "ok, that's not bad" and others when I wondered if kanye was parodying himself. His rap style grew stale after a few tracks and some of the filters and samples seemed just silly after a while. I can glimmers of greatness, but they are dimmed by overcompensation.
I remember this album when it came out before Kanye went completely crazy and horrific. The album was clearly a turning point. At the time, I thought it was an interesting one and would lead to more interesting things. Sadly, we know better, and listening to it again was not enjoyable in the slightest.
some interesting tracks and beats but yeesh
The last time I listened to Kanye and enjoyed it was when Graduation came out tbh. He's had a couple of bangers since then sure, but his music became very... experimental after that album, in a way that I just really don't vibe with. Plus it makes me super sad to think about who he is as a person now. I definitely loled at some of the bars in 'I'm In It' though.
My intention in my reviews is to separate the art from the artist as much as possible, and consider the album on its own merit rather than judging it based on the artist's actions. I also don't intend to skip an album, just because its content or its creator is in some way objectionable. I must stay impartial for science, and treat it as if I've never heard of the album or the artist in my life. I totally respect people's decision to not listen to this one, and I went back and forth on it myself, but ultimately decided that the music itself was the focus of this project for me, and I'd live with that. Clarifying the above is something I decided that I needed to do about halfway through the first song, as I was thinking to myself "Oh hey, this is pretty good... the production is crazy, the performance is captivating... I'm worried this is going to end up being a 5 and I'll have to justify giving this problematic guy such a high rating". (I have heard some of Kanye's other work before, and I can't deny that some of it is really good.) Then I listened to the rest of the album. It's not worth a 5. There are things I liked... from a production and composition standpoint it's both polished and unusual, a combination that I typically like a lot. It's also got a few recurring themes and lyrics that lend it some good cohesion and make the album feel more like a single work, rather than just a collection of songs. Anyone who knows my taste in music knows I value the album as an artform, especially when that thematic throughline is strong. Another big tick. On the other hand, lyrically it's pretty awful. There's a line in "I'm In It" about sweet and sour sauce that made me cringe so hard on multiple fronts... a lot of objectifying, womanising... and if I'm not mistaken, the invention of a new curse word: "Mothern*ggas", which just doesn't make sense. There's no verb in there. All of this considered, I'm glad I chose to include my disclaimer at the start of this review anyway, if only so that you, dear reader, would know without a shadow of a doubt that this album was bad, that my low rating has nothing to do with Kanye being problematic, and is entirely earned by the low quality of the album itself.
There are some glimmers of greatness in this album, but it just doesn't sound nearly as good as Kanye's earlier work. I think this is the album where he really starts to sound like he's going off his rocker, and that doesn't sound great.
kanye 😭 he has better works, also, kanye
I've never listened to Kanye before, so all I had going into this one was his reputation for edgelord egomaniac narcissistic bullshit. His lyrics follow that formula on this one and probably all of his other work. Most rappers boast about their bitches, bangin', and bling and this is no different, so in that respect there is really no reason for this to be on here except for some excellent electronic backing tracks which include compositions by an army of artists like Daft Punk, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Justin Vernon, and Frank Ocean. The music reminds me of Amon Tobin a bit, and sometimes minimalist leanings like Plastikman. I would love a version of this that's stripped of Kanye's revolting self-aggrandizing lyrics, but instead it's stained with the poetry and persona of a severely damaged dumbass.
Musically (only), Kanye is great. But Yeezus falls very short of My Dark Twisted Fantasy in manner of creativity and production. And I cannot stomach some of those misogynistic lyrics.
Not for me, sorry. All the swearing and slang tire me out—even though certain songs are truly original and have an excellent beat!—I even get headaches and feel physically sick. And then there's all the misogyny, omnipresent... thanks, but no thanks!
This record came out after I was already off the Kanye train and I’m firmly unenthusiastic about having to listen to it today. This album is a little more abrasive (read:aggressive) than I’m used to from Kanye, and I can understand why critics would have found that noteworthy. He seems super obsessed with sex/power in a way that’s pretty off putting, so I lost interest as the album went on. I can’t put my finger on anything else that really sounded like this at the time, but I was admittedly not super plugged into hip-hop in 2013. Shame he’s such an insufferable asshole though.
What’s said about the production of this album has already been said, there are numerous choices on this album that are genuinely interesting and I vibe with. I like this album less now than I used to, and I dunno. When I was younger, I used to think these lyrics were stupid, but also ironic, tongue-in-cheek, charming, but knowing what we know about Kanye from the past 7 years, these lyrics reveal themselves to be just stupid.
that was hard to listen to
it was pretty okay, i don't really like this genre of music but the lyrics were really well written and it was pretty well done; i can tell why rap fans like this album a lot. the only song i liked was bound 2 (ik it's popular but it's for a reason) - 5/10
as a person who dislikes kanye to the core, i really grew to appreciate this album in the sense of production and its complexity. i like when songs are ambigous and combine multiple styles, sounds and here some of those combinations intrigued me, which affects my rating of the album. i probably won't be coming back to it any time soon, however for my first real listen to his music it was okay and honestly that's enough
Being an arrogant knob is always a tricky choice. There is an argument for faking it until you make it, but you run a risk if you’re not as good as you claim to be. Kanye falls well short of the genius he thinks he is
I like the background music on a lot of this - the opening doomy-sounding electronics made me think that maybe this'll be another nice hip-hop surprise. But the vocals were kind of an annoying distraction for me. I'd be interested in hearing a remix of this as a purely instrumental album. I know my opinion is affected by what Kanye is like these days, and it's certainly not uniformly terrible. But I can't get past a 2 on this one.
Vissa delar riktigt bra, vissa delar inte så bra och vissa delar som att lyssna på en skräckfilm
Cool när den kom (t.ex black skinhead) men svår lyssning nu i backspegeln när man mer hör the ravings of a madman.
Swaghili
Fa-an vad vulgär han är, Jösses. Och jag är för gammal och Kanye alldeles för sinnessjuk.
This review is from late 2025 but...Yeezus was about where I parted ways with Kanye. I was about as big a fan of his through MBDTF - which was more of an admired, not loved thing for me - as most other Kanye heads and found the Coachella 2011 performance one of the crowning achievements of hip hop and pop music in the early part of the 21st century. Pinpointing where the wheels started coming off for Kanye is a subjective thing - some friends went “uh oh” and never came back after the Taylor Swift/Beyonce protest. Me, it’s this album. Sonically, musically, his collaborators deliver, but his lyrics and performance, which were always iffy and not his strong suit, felt hurried and undercooked. Which is a problem for making music that is ostensibly as incisive and provocative as Yeezus purports to be. For some, Blood On The Leaves is a highpoint in his catalog. For me, even back in 2013, it felt like an object lesson in Kanye delivering something half-assed about subject matter that was either out of his grasp or poorly crafted because no one could tell him no. If there was ever a subject that deserved more than his just OK make-up assignment in an 8th grade English class, this is it! And this ain’t it champ.
Why was this fool popular? The album is noise with out of breath talking shoved on top. The guy doesnt even articulate. He isn’t good, no less one of the best. Maybe he had a spectacular album but Yall need to to let this cat go.
I miss the old kanye Its fine Its massively overrated Last song good
GEORGE BUSH HATES BLACK PEOPLE
I rated the the previous 2 Kanye albums on this list that I knew well despite the fact Kanye is a Nazi. This I knew less well. Take away the Nazi, the misogyny and boring self boasting and I quite liked the production and some of the content. But then some of the most powerful stuff remained samples (i.e. Billie Holiday. And Kanye's crap over the top was kind of insulting in comparison. But then if I'm giving the most points for the gritty electro production then meh as it had about 1000 producers so what do you expect.
Yeezus det er noget pis. Ikke gral nok til at jeg keder mig, men virkelig overvurderet.
Great production but the lyrics are garbage and he is the worst rapper in the game. His whiny ass delivery is garbage. Please keep him in the production room amd away from the pen and mic
2.6
Not a Kanye fan. Overly self-indulgent egotistic lyrics that can't stop bragging about where he's going to jizz next distract from any artistic talent that otherwise might be more tolerable.
Juvenile lyrics. In 2013, did we think Yeezus would be supremely influential? That didn't pan out, and only some of that is due to what has happened in the ensuing years to West’s reputation. The album’s musical elements, some which might otherwise be interesting, are disjointed and hard to follow. And, again, the awful lyrics get in the way. Who listens to this now? And why?
naah man. inte bra
Kanye had some great songs. But fuck Kanye.
This was my first time listening to a Kanye album and I tried to separate the music from the PoS Human we all know him to be. I have to say I don’t get the accolades. There are so many artists in this genre with much better rhymes and flows to their music than what I heard here.
Would sound better without Kanye's voice.
This album seems like a tribute to Kanye, by Kanye. I didn’t care much for it, but then I got to Blood on the Leaves, which I immediately recognized the sampling and the title’s reference to Nina Simone’s Strange Fruit. Strange Fruit is a beautiful, dark, hard to digest, haunting song full of imagery and meaning. In this album, it’s cheapened into an easily digestible sampling devoid of any true meaning or soul, and thus, is an accurate depiction of this album as a whole. Kanye is talented, but much like I don’t care to talk to people that just talk endlessly about themselves, I don’t care to listen to an album like that either.
The production on this hasn't massively aged well, nor have the lyrics. You can deff see the turn here.
Black skinhead is great. The rest I’m not fussed.
I actually liked the first two songs and it was downhill from there. There’s just such a massive influx of arrogance that comes through Kayne’s music at this point even before he goes completely berserk, which makes it difficult to listen to it. I try to separate the music from the musician so I thought I’d like it more, but there’s just no irony or self-awareness in these lyrics. Also, I’m In It was just disturbing and offensive to the ears.
Some of the beats hit hard and keep things interesting, but the lyrics are rough, cringe at best, unbearable at worst. You can already hear the unraveling begin on this one.
I'm not sure why people are surprised with Kanye's modern public opinion giving he was an egomaniac racial supremacist the whole time. Some of these were ok to listen to, the rest were just annoying.
Random thoughts: * Hard to judge this one fairly considering Kanye's erratic and disconcerting behavior over the recent years. * I'm also just biased against the newer Kanye stuff. Those first few albums were pop oriented, hooky, and fun. * This album seems way more angry and hard. * Broken record here: it's hard to listen to all the profanity. Especially since some of the profanity here seems like it is for shock value as opposed to emphasizing a point. * Bound 2 has a killer sample. * On Sight is very aggressive. * We should have seen the crazy Kanye coming. Just go back and listen to Black Skinhead. He put it all out there. Just sayin'. * I didn't hate this album but also couldn't really connect with it.
This was better than that twisted fantasy album. If I ignore the rapping the music was more interesting but still repetitive
I still just can’t get into this genre. I hope one day it clicks
Total edgelord music. One or two songs I liked but almost every track is too long.
Yeezus ‘I’d rather be a dick than a swallower’. Dreams can come true! You are a dick! I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, but musically, over the first half at least I thought this was excellent, a kind of turbo charged Kraftwerk-Afrika Bambataa, with oversaturated sounds and noises, squelchy synths and galloping, thumping rhythms. Lyrically though, it is pretty much uniformly crass, stupid and wholly without any wit or humour, especially compared to something like The College Dropout. Makes me sick how far we done fell. It doesn’t really make me sick, the man's just a narcissistic Nazi (Nazissist?). I gave TCD a 4 and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy a 2 and I think this falls somewhere between them, although it’s probably closer to MBDTW, as it shares much of the same ludicrous self obsession as that album. But musically, at least before it runs out of steam in the 2nd half, it’s much closer to TCD. I think it is a high 2 - I would listen again, if I didn’t have to listen to him rap. And of course he’s still a massive cunt dick. 💽💽 Playlist submission: On Sight
Didn't enjoy this and since he's canceled I don't have motivation to put the effort in
This is like when kids make the worst soundcloud rap you've ever heard and say "we're getting out the ghetto with this one".
I don't know if I want to listen to famous nazi Kanye West's music. But if I must... Honestly, the album was pretty good. While I don't understand why rappers always have to focus on how much sex and money they have, the music itself was pretty solid. Lots of variety in the genres etc. I still have to dock a lot of points just for the guy being actually an anti-semite with a good complex...
This doesn’t need to be on here
I tried to listen to this with an open mind, given how much I don't like Kanye since he went off the deep end. Three tracks in, and I'll just go off and say it--I don't love Rick Rubin's production style. He brings too much abrassiveness into production often, and this kind of screams that Rubin touch. Don't get me wrong, I like rock music, and I like rap, but I just don't always love to mix my rock and rap music. This isn't exactly super rock like, as lots of Rubin's other stuff--the production kind of sounds more like 90s industrial rock. So this is the problem, really. While I don't think Kanye is a great rapper, he's usually a great producer. This album doesn't do it for me in the same way his production does on early albums, or even Dark Twisted Fantasy. The first three tracks are mostly not that great, though the third track starts to get better. New Slaves is better. Hold My Liquor is good too, and the track with the Nina Simone sample. Send it Up is just grating.
I've never really been into hip-hop, but there are some songs here and there I do like a lot, and since a lot of people praised Kanye as a genius, I was ready to have my mind blown. But it didn't happen. I really couldn't find anything special here. And I tried. It's very likely because I'm not familiar with the style, but still. I found it boring. It was the usual yada, yada about being the best and all that. For me, it was a 5 out 10. mini0n 11/09/2025
You could have picked a lot better Kanye album
first signs of dementia
He's talented yes. But he's also a narcissistic and disturbed human being. Can't support it.
Genius or mental illness? Yes. There are a few interesting things here, but it is mostly an over-indulgent mess. I liked the beats and grooves in a lot of parts quite a bit, but Ye as an MC, not so much. I won't even get into the other baggage he brings along that makes me almost uncomfortable listening to his music. Yeesh. I think I understand why this is on the list and it probably belongs on the list, but I did not care for it.
Not really my preferred era of rap / hip hop, but it didn't strike me as offensive or bad, just not my cup of tea. I would give it three stars, but I know too much about Ye to do that.
Didn't stand out to me as much as the other Kanye album I've listened to on this list.
Not a patch on his first couple of albums 5/10
Not a fan of this.
Hmmm.... Started good. Became a bit messy, need to keep listening to see if it improves with time.
"Unhinged" would be the word to describe it
I stand by my previous comments on Kanye
I can see why this was critically acclaimed but I did not enjoy listening.
This album doesn’t date as I remembered it. Has more low points than hight. And I was a big Kanye fan
His music does nothing for me. At least he kept it relatively short compared to other hip hop albums
Was never a fan
Waaaay too much autotune. Only a few songs hit the spot for me. Not my music.
Kanye lost his mind and was coming off as interesting because he has previously done interesting things; if anyone else had made this they would've been laughed out of the mall they were playing in. This is a descent into madness if the person it was about had no personality and was just obsessed with how they see themselves. Other artists did what they could to make some of this stand out in some ways, but the vision here is awful. Everyone should watch this, it's my actual review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxIvg0y6vCY&pp=0gcJCfwAo7VqN5tD
I had ducked way out by this point. I'm hearing this for the first time. This opening track is obnoxious. Still using the same formula and some of the tracks just lean in hard to that formula and feel forced. The chipmunked up vocal sample. There are still some interesting tracks, but as always not that strong of a vocalist or lyricist.
there are better kanye albums
2 - Man he's so up his own shit
No me gusta el hip hop
With lyrics this offensive, on so many levels, I can't imagine ever listening to this again.
Felt like Kanye still hadn’t brushed off the fish sticks joke when he made this album
Naw....I won't listen to this Nazi's bullshit today...
Basically if it wasn't for the word "um"....profanity and sampling this would be an instrumental album. Not 1 original idea. Since My beautiful, which I thought was great, it all sounds the same. Like finding a piece of rabbit sh*t on a hillside ...nothing new here.
Love how this guy thinks he is a lyrical genius and comes up with garbage like this album Beat was ok i guess
This was the point I gave up on Kanye West, I wasn't a fan fan but I like his first few albums, and I remember listening to this the day it got released and promptly never listened to it again until today. It remains as abrasive today as it did then and just gives me a tension headache to listen to it.
ass weil kanye und so a nit so mega lol
D Beats sind no spannend, aber alles andere spricht mich null a.
Nup
C tier Kanye
1. zight - 1.5 2. black - 1.5 3. god - 2 4. zlavez - 1.5 5. liquor - 2 6. in - 1.5 7. blood - 2 8. guilt - 1 9. up - 0 10. bound - 1.5
"Bound 2" is actually half decent and saves this from a lower score.
Mwa
Not my favorite Kanye album, really doesn't hit. I can separate him from when this album, or any, was released. Not my jam.
Some good songs but some were so ass
Started decent got worse
I respect the art of this album. Otherwise, I'm not of fan of the punk rap / industrial sound or the harshness. To me Kanye is a guy's rapper. Doesn't get me going.
Glimpses of something enjoyable, but mostly just nonsense to me on this album. The last song is probably the best.
Ok honestly the instrumental part is pretty cool
I really didn't want to give Kanye air time on my Spotify, but I gave in. Some good songs on this album but it's not one of my favourites of his.
And continuing my current trend of 1 and 2 star albums, I get my 3rd Kanye album before getting any Beatles albums. The constant barrage of delusions of grandeur and self adulation was insufferable even before he became a Nazi. Mercifully, it was relatively short.
Alot more electronica then I expected. Some cool bars, but nothing really stuck with me. Black Skinhead was really the only song I would come back to.
I was surprised by the unexpected minimalism of this album, but I can't find much beauty in this type of creative chaos especially when it's matched with lyrics about aggressive blowjobs (even if it's all a joke). Then there's the sample of Nina Simone mixed in with the warbling noise of autotune—it's a bad sound!
Favorite track: Bound 2. Overall score: 3.2/10
Not really for me. I prefer his early stuff.
Not my thing, really
When "Ye" ran for president we all should have seen it coming after he revealed his god complex on this disc - and here we thought it was all a front! Delusional. Anyway, this is probably pretty good, but SO not my genre.
Not sure this is 1001 material
Looking back it seems like this is where Kanye flipped over into trying to be an edgelord, though what I've heard of his later records are far worse than this. I liked both 808 & Heartbreak and MBDTF previously and the music and beat making is still inventive here. However taking an emotive Nina Simone sample of a song about lynching to then rap about your relationship and money problems over the top is tasteless and ill-judged.
Boy, that song "black skinhead" is starting to make a lot more sense in 2025...
First half kept me engaged, but after a while it was samey without a change. Hurry up with the goddamned croissants 4/10
I didn't enjoy this as much as 'The College Dropout'. Nowhere near. It seems to me that on this album, Kanye decided to do less and less of what he does best which is rapping clever lyrics over clever samples and cool beats, and more of whatever the hell this is. The opening two tracks are good. 'On Sight' is heavy and electronic and 'Black Skinhead' is very intense and threatening and Kanye sounds great on it. A lot of the rest of this album though is really obnoxious. It's filled with these screechy parts that are more irritating than they are interesting or captivating. The two singles are the aforementioned 'Black Skinhead' and the closer 'Bound 2' which I also really like and have done since it first came out. It's weird though, how these two singles, which for me are the two best tracks, sound like they don't belong on this album. They're the standouts in quality and also in sound. It sounds like he wanted to sound bigger and grander but to me it just sounds a bit pompous. I'm hoping the final album of his on this list is better.
I didn’t hate this, but didn’t like it enough for a 3. With Illmatic probably the best hip hop album so far.
This music is equivalent to overfilled lip plumpers for me. The initial musical skills are over-tweaked until they're unattractive.
Not my cup of tea. I get that it's supposed to be sparse, but as a result it doesn't have anything to grab attention.
Very highly regarded? I don’t get it.
Well, we can narrow down when Kanye went crazy between when he released College Dropout and this album.
Kyllä se on 2/5. Pari hyvää kappaletta, muuten ei ole omaan makuun. Tästä se alamäki sitten alkoi.
College Dropout is my favorite Kanye West album, and there are several great songs on Late Registration and Graduation. I don't think I've ever heard any of the songs from Yeezus though. Well, its....weird. Kanye is a good rapper, but the songs just have weird sounds all through the background. Straight off the bat we have On Sight which is just annoying. Black Skinhead is fairly intersting, good rap. The rest is all a lot of the same. Good rap, but annoying background music. I'm In It has some good rap lines. Blood On The Leaves and Guilt Trip hit pretty nicely. Ends with the nice Bound 2. All in all its just ok, would have preferred any of his first three albums instead. Best song: Bound 2
Very few people know how much input Houmous & Chutney had on this album. Pretty much all the writing and producing. It was only when Kim came along during the recording, Kanye changed. We warned him. He didn’t listen. The rest is history! 1.7
Sometimes I worry about rating foreign language albums very highly on here without having done the work to find lyric translations and look up bibliographical details of artists I've never really heard of and their political histories and cultual contexts that I haven't been experiencing first-hand. Because I could really like the way something *sounds* and unwittingly give Yeezus by Kanye West a really high grade, you know?
I certainly risk overestimating my own prescience when I look back at this album's release with everything we know about West today (he recently tweeted that he has dominion over his wife and has repeatedly posted Nazi imagery). What I remember is really enjoying the sound and production of this album but really not being able to listen to it a lot because it all felt like it chafed and I was starting to lose belief in the idea that this was all critical genius, to do things like sample "Strange Fruit" and rap over it about consumption and cheating. (To borrow from wikipedia: Jody Rosen of Vulture stated that: "[West is] well aware how audacious to interpolate that sacred song into a monstrously self-pitying ... a melodrama about what a drag it is when your side-piece won't abort your love child.") We'd already had MBDTF and it had some similar production tricks and similar lyrics, and 2013 for me personally had a lot of scales falling from my eyes about dudes who were like "no one can understand my dark and twisted psyche >:)) anyone who could see in my mind....ehhehe...well....they would go crazy >:]" and the idea that the reddit/4chan style of using slurs because free speech is important. The beat for Black Skinhead was incredible but listening to it at the gym I'd just think about how Genius annotations on it would be like "actually! West here says 'keep it 300, like the Romans' but 300 is a Spartan army reference as seen in the comic and movie!! however, this is lyrical genius to twist the reference to rhyme with '300 bitches, where's the Trojans' !!" and I just was getting sick of it. A bunch of the "zingers" in here, whether critics loved them or not, feel to me like Hot Topic t-shirt slogans or Facebook statuses from the worst guy you know in your hometown. ("I'd rather be a dick than a swallower" .... "in a world of dicks and assholes I'd rather be a dick" you see where I'm going here?) Daft Punk did incredible work on this and it's unfortunate that Kanye West is who he is. Jesus certainly wept.
Es un trap inbancable. No puedo escuchar esto lamentablemente, aunque sea mucho más pasable que otros.
Pretty hard to get through. Has some compelling moments but in general really abrasive and hard to get into. Lyrics get exhausting after a while. 2
2/5
These albums are hard to rate. He’s talented, the sound is solid, but he sucks as a person and the lyrics are not for me
Enjoyed it more than expected but struggle to take Kanye West seriously. Favourite tracks: On Sight, Black Skinhead & New Slaves. 2/5
Black skinhead is worth saving. Otherwise this would be a 1*. There's nothing else just enjoy here, it's just a vehicle to hear what he has to say, which isn't anything particularly profound
Don't mind a couple of the songs (Black Skinhead) but some of the lyrics made me so uncomfortable (I'm In It was so gross). There's also much autotune and i wasn't a huge fan of some of the experimental elements or sampling.
I don't understand it well. Very out there and experimental. It has big moments. I don't want to listen to it again except for the intro and the outro. Craziest line: eating out an Asian chick need that sweet and sour sauce
p935. 2013. 2 stars. Rap, so wrong audience. Bonus points for the quality production. Point deducted to balance out the size of his ego.
I hated it. The songs are boring
Ugh
I find this very hard to rate, because there were aspects to it that were absolutely fantastic - I loved a lot of the production - but so much of it was so relentlessly misogynistic. Giving it a two on balance, but there were bits of this that were four or five stars
The first four tracks bode well but after that it becomes a bit of a disjointed ans irritating mess. Not keen on the production style either
Don't like the lyrics
Lace of musical content makes this - like most rap - low quality and uninspiring.
Kannski er maður of litaður af því sem hann stendur fyrir núna, en þetta er ekki fyrir mig.
He's so repugnant
A lot of people like this. I am not one of those people.
Where it all started going downhill for Ye. Someone get him those damn croissants, ffs.
Yeeeeeeeeeeah, no thanks. Daft Punk is my favourite artist, don't ask me about this.
Yeezus, more overproduced noise. Kanye rest.
When it came out I was at the peak of my Kanye and hip-hop enjoyment, but it grew off me massively over time, mostly due to the terrible lyrics and the production feeling like a bad imitation of more interesting artists. There's some good moments spread throughout, and I enjoy the production more than i used to now, but it's still a rough listen.
I appreciate the attempt at minimalist production and the short runtime but this album just sounds lacklustre and unfinished. A lot of the tracks sound like rough mixes. Nowhere near as good as earlier Kanye albums.
Thoughts before listening: This was about the point when I started ignoring Kanye. I like his earlier albums through My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy quite a bit, but this one was released around the time when Kanye the insufferable personality started to overshadow any enjoyment found in his music. I also find the title of this to be insulting and egotistical. Review: In general Kanye's sound on this album is less poppy with the backing tracks mainly using distorted, harsh, industrial sounding beats throughout. Also lots of autotune making Kanye's voice sound robotic and mechanical instead of organic. "Black Skinhead" is the best song here and also the only one I recognized on my listen through. I'll add that to the playlist, but I just don't have any interest in listening to most of these lyrics ever again. 2-stars
Kanye has good, and maybe great albums. This is not one of them.
Meh. This was the beginning of the end.
Not for me
I'm a little behind on my Christian literature, but if I'm not mistaken, you're not supposed to refer to yourself as a god while talking to Jesus. I don't really like any of the songs, but they were intriguing enough to keep me engaged. The styles change so much throughout a song that it keeps you on your toes. It's a very interesting experimental album, but I'm not going to listen to it again.
Yeezus. That was Yit.
Not my Genre but some very interesting lyrics. I listened to this on headphones whilst mowing my lawn so I didn't piss off my neighbours twice 😅
Turning point where his music was getting worse. Production is cool but music should be nice to listen to and this isn’t
Not a fan of the man. My kids both love his stuff. I saw him open for U2 on his first tour, he was entertaining, just him, a mic and a boombox with backbeats circa 2000. I went in open minded so I could give this a listen in its entirety... Interesting electronic intro but then his unappealing voice kicks in and my open mindedness went out the window. He just sounds pissed and I listen to music to rock out, or get into a groove or chill, his voice makes the muscles in my neck tighten up. Maybe I'm too old, I just don't get him but apparently lots of people do, there are 600M listens to "Black Skinhead" and 1B for "Bound 2", wtf?! "I Am A God" speaks to his mentality and contributes to my unflattering view of him as a person. I know from college tailgates that he rules their airwaves but I'll never be a fan. I just find him angry and unenjoyable. Top 1001 for influence and pop culture maybe, but not cause it's good to listen to.
Loved Kanye for first 4 albums....then this....
not for me this one
Overproduced autotune shit but there is some inspiration in here. Stand-out: Hold My Liquor
Kanye has albums that deserve a spot on this list but I Yeezus ain’t one of them. What a sloppy mess this is. Black Skinhead is ridiculous but also great but every other track is a mess. So much random patois peppered in here with shit lines, this sucks. 2 stars
I once liked Kanye, but then when he became awful I removed all his music from my playlists. I think this album came out around the point I made a decision to stop listening to him so I haven't really heard it before. The thing is, while I don't like his lyrics or him at all, the music itself appeals to me so I'll give him a star for that. He's obviously already losing the plot in this album though. Rating: 2
Not bad despite the fact that I don’t like him as a person.
2 because I knew a few songs that were alright. 0 for referring to Asian lady bits as sweet and sour sauce
Every time a Kanye album comes up I'm now expecting to enjoy it more than I expected. This started the same way, fascinating audio, inventive production, but seriously drifted off halfway through and really hit the bricks on I'm In It. Blood on the Leaves doesn't land for me, a waste of the Nina sample. I do not like the autotune gubbins. Is he responsible for that whole movement of tuneless autotuned rambling hip hop that my neighbours insist on playing? That's a serious misdemeanor. Bound 2 is ok but it doesn't recapture the unexpected joy I found in his earlier albums' excellent sampling of old soul records. Ultimately, it starts off abrasive and interesting but gets oddly boring for me.
I like posh white girl music. But I don't think this album is his best work. I like his newer stuff better as it is less angry.
Way less bad than I thought... lyrics are horrible though
Did not like this 2 stars
Kanye is a shithead, and his music isn't as good as people give him credit for.
I remember this record being a massive departure from Kanye's previous work and I honestly didn't care for it much at the time. 11 years later and this is still a tough listen. I mean, right from the start you're greeted with electronic and industrial "beats" WILDLY differing from what you've heard in the Dropout Bear trilogy or even "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" just a few years prior. This continues all throughout and mix that with Kanye's extra-abrasive and brash lyrics, and it all becomes a bit too much sonically. Kanye was always one to strive for greatness and reach for the stars from a production standpoint, and he certainly reached some high highs in his first five studio albums (plus "Watch The Throne" if you wanna count that), but I was never into this one. Drill and trap music have never really been my thing and my tastes were certainly not swayed after this recent listen.
I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of this guy
The first few songs were hard to listen to, then it got more experimental and thus interesting and more listenable. I don't like the excessive profanity and that it is such a vulgar album, though. Overall it's not something I would listen to again but I appreciate his talent and that he experimented a lot. Fun fact: In New Slaves's conclusion/outro, Kanye used a sample from one of the most iconic songs behind the Iron Curtain/in Eastern Europe, 'Pearl haired girl' (Gyöngyhajú lány) from 1969 by Hungarian band Omega. It is the highlight in New Slaves. Kanye didn't get the permission to use the simple so he got sued by the songwriter and they settled the case outside the court later. This is probably the closest we'll get to a Hungarian band on this list (my home country), it's a shame because this list hasn't contained any Eastern European bands so far even if there are tons of great albums from there.
Most influential rapper of the century. Reinvented rap + brought an entirely new audience into the genre. Most of the most famous rap/hiphop artists today influenced by him etc. etc. I don't like this album. Maybe because it's one of his least approachable, tho I do like other artists with aggressive, jagged beats like peggy and injury reserve.
I'm having a hard time putting into words my reaction to this album. It feels very much of its time. Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, m.A.A.d City came out the year before and you can hear the impact it had. This is a super horny album. This is the first album after he started dating Kim Kardashian. I don't know if there's a connection but he can't stop talking about or making sex references. A lot of "noise music" on this album...not appealing. I like his earlier work much better. Kanye has gotten really weird.
i don’t care why this is supposed to be so good
This is my 2nd Kanye album on the list. I still fail to understand why this guy is popular. His rapping is mediocre at best. Lyrically it's all very silly, every song Kanye let's us know what he's going to do with his dick or what Kanye wants done to his dick. All the lyrics sound like they were written by a 7th grade boy who just started puberty.
Ehhhh… I liked his earlier stuff, I never got into this one. So narcissistic.
Of course I had to know this Kanye West album would appear at some point. Knowing that did not make it any easier to listen to. It is hard to know whether this is blunt, aggressive social commentary or just a reflection of who he is. While I do see the creative elements and hear the sound that crosses genres and pushes boundaries, this is still not my thing.
Maybe his 7th best album......his faith got in the way of his mental health.
There's some good instrumental potential here, yet there's also a lot of self-sabotage (mostly in Kanye's vocal performance) preventing certain tracks from being sonic masterpieces. The few times when singing is present, it's often heavily autotuned – to its detriment – and the synths, while great, are frequently interweaved nondescript rapping vocals and weak lyrics. I'm judging these lyrics on relatability and depth, and in general the lyrics on Yeezus have neither. On Sight: intense and reasonably catchy synths back a fairly nondescript rap vocal. Weird choral interlude makes the track a lot less accessible. This track definitely starts the album with something new and creative, but does it sound good? Not particularly. When the track ended, I found myself letting out a sigh of relief. Note the heavy use of very brief silences, which is also seen throughout the rest of the album. Black Skinhead: The percussive rhythm here is very strong. Consistent, brutal, paralysing. There's a sudden-mute sound that reminds me of the drumming on David Bowie's "Low", an album that was revered (in part) for its revolutionary drumming. Not a fan of the artificial clapping though, and I'd like to hear some more human-played instruments. Kanye's voice isn't that good, and incredibly non-distinct from contemporaries, so I'm interested to see if he varies his enunciation or maybe introduces more vocalists. I Am A God: A bit fever-dream-ish. Lots of little details to keep the listener engaged. I'm also noticing at this point that (possibly due to nearly 100% electric instrumentation) the textures are quite thin. The screaming towards the end is a bit off-putting, as is the narcissistic theme, but I'll let it slide. New Slaves: the melodic theme is good. Foreboding, impatient, menacing. Everything else about the track is pretty mediocre until the section with the radio-filter singing, which approaching soul territory (with just a hint of shoegaze). Here, the music quality drastically improves. I could listen to a whole album of the last 90 seconds of this song. Hold My Liquor: God, the synths behind Kanye's voice are so darn good in this track. Melty psychedelic electric guitars intermingling with one another over a restless, dronelike low synth line. Kanye's voice actually kind of gets in the way of an otherwise brilliant instrumental track. I'm In It: The lyrics here are pretty gross ("Eatin' Asian pussy, all I need was sweet and sour sauce"? Seriously?), and there isn't much else going on. At least we're introduced to a different vocalist/rapper, this time with a solid and distinctive voice, but that doesn't improve the track much. And, in contrast to the previous track, the instrumental never settles on anything convincing. Generally a weaker song. Blood On The Leaves: It takes some guts to sample Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit. It had better justify itself with good music. In fact, the track starts off promising, with some (ridiculously) intense horn-synths punctuating some fun electronic harmonising. I can't even tell if the female vocal in the chorus is a human or not. Unfortunately, the track is severely tarnished by the autotune on Kanye's singing. Guilt Trip: the retro video game noises get old really quickly, leaving us with nonsensical lyrics and repetitive electronic percussion. Somehow the "dem a gwaan" section is the strongest and most memorable part of the song, and it's not particularly appealing. A throwaway track. Send It Up: The vocals here, while being monotone, match reasonably well with the chord in the synths, making them stronger than most other tracks. The "security breach" noise that defines the track is a little grating, and substantially took away from my enjoyment. Bound 2: the (texturally) thickest and most musical backing of any of the tracks. I feel that singing, rather than rapping, would've meshed much better with the childlike multipart harmonies. Still, this was a pretty good way to end the album. The singing breaks are clearly rooted strongly in soul-pop, and they serve as fun interludes. One of the strongest tracks. 2/5 Key tracks: Black Skinhead, New Slaves (second half), Bound 2
The second song, Black Skinhead, has a nice relatively catchy tune, but the rest are a bit meh. Nothing really happens in the songs.
I do enjoy some Kanye, but not this one. I try to separate the art from the artist and I don't really think of myself as a prude but I found a lot of his lyrics really offputting on this album. It's not helped that it just doesn't have beats that I can really get into. It's not exactly terrible but I don't see myself returning.
Keen on the beats not so much the vocals and lyrics.
Rating: 5/10 Mixed bag album. There are three great songs on here as well as a handful of interesting ideas, the rest of the album I find incredibly annoying and obnoxious, which is exactly the point since Kanye is flexing his ego to the maximum here. The songs that work incorporate electronic elements mostly while sounding different and catchy. Most of the other songs feel too experimental in nature without sounding musical, and with Kanye's awful lyrics it becomes a nuisance to listen to. Favorite songs: Black Skinhead, the end of New Slaves, Blood On The Leaves, Bound 2. Worst songs: I Am A God, I'm In It, Send It Up.
This album is ok. I don't think I'll ever be a Kanye fan, but there were a few decent tracks on here. Not sure I'd choose to listen to it again though, so that puts it in the 2/5 territory.
Not his best work
Oh, my god, he's lost it, he's totally lost it.
Maybe it’s because I grew up around this era of Kanye forming, but this album feels so horrendously outdated already. Much like very generic pop, rap music can age the worst especially when it’s as commercial as this. The leather jeans and Pyrex references are as dated as the beat selection. Kanye for me is at his best when he combines his egocentrism with some humour such as on life of pablo, however there’s no real humour to be found here. Kanye isn’t really saying much and when he does such as on “new slaves” it’s instantly thrown away by lines like “I’d rather be a d*** than a swallower”. Kanye works best when he’s rapping over some crazy sample or some beautifully made beat but that’s not present here with the exception of “bound 2”, which is slightly more humourless and has aged somewhat better. Despite all this the rapping is relatively solid, I think musically it’s just aged badly.
Just not a Kanye fan. Not my thing.
Ugh this guy. The music is good! Can’t question his creativity. When he wrote some of these songs he was clearly in a manic phase. The song “I Am a God” could be used in medical schools to help teach what mania is (I am a healthcare provider and have treated patients with bipolar disease). But as a woman, his misogyny is so off-putting that it dramatically impairs my enjoyment of this album. Actually makes it a difficult listen. Going to take some time to think how to rate this one tomorrow!
I was kind of hesitant to listen to this due to Kanye being just an all around terrible person. The production on this album is insane. The instrumentals are so unconventional for hip hop and honestly it works so well. I really don't love the lyrics on this album and they're even worse due to how bad of a person Kanye is. They're very misogynistic and egotistical which I don't care for at all. It's hard to give this album a score because the instrumentals are amazing and the production is amazing but I very much dislike Kanye and his lyrics in this record.
The words and rapping are dreadful but the music and production are interesting.
2024-03-21...
Not his best album
-needs to be stated I don’t believe you can seperate art from artist and I’m listening in 2024 -there just isn’t depth on the music beyond the lyrics -Listening back, it’s kinda blaring he def is either bipolar or BPD -2 stars for the 2 songs I didn’t absolutely hate
Jezelf zowel God alsook Yeezus noemen en dan zulke troep uitbrengen. Stuitend
"I bet it'll sell even if I put out some weird shit" - Kanye I feel like this album was the first major hint on where Ye was headed mentally.
40 minutes of a man saying gross shit about women. Tiring.
2/7/24. Even after listening again years later, I think this is a big step down from Kanye's work before this one. The production is good, but believe it's a bit abrasive and a little all over the place. Still a couple songs I'll revisit like Black Skinhead and Blood On The Leaves.
Felt like just listening to this I'm supporting his narcissism. There's a few lyrics on this which will live rent free in my head. "I'd rather be a leader than a follower, a dick than a swallower" for example
Manages to be abrasive and heavy, while sounding thin with no richness of sound. With the exception of Black Skinhead it is devoid of bangers. Some of the worst lyrics and melodies I have heard on this list.
Not a fan of his music or his ego, but the industrial vibe this album has going is better than the last one we had to listen of his.
Sometimes you just get tired of constantly hearing : bitches, pussy, titties. I really like Frank Ocean but even he couldn’t save New Slaves for me - I’d rather be a dick than a swallower? Very clever, but Kanye has gone on to prove that he’s a total dick. Musically, this is very inventive. I just can’t take the bullshit lyrics.
Kanye. What to say? I believe he is a true artist, and a fearless one. He absolutely does not believe in censoring his true thoughts, but, wow that is ugly. his willingness to be unlikable extends way beyond provocative trolling, and I believe is a clear representation of his thoughts. And his success has meant that he hasn't felt the need to moderate his expression at all. true artistic freedom! And this is what that looks like; ugly sexism, rampant egotism, and anger (some of it righteous, much of it unfocussed). While I often debate whether the art can justify the artist, Kanye deliberately makes no distinction. And this album was just the beginning. Since then, he has spiraled down into MAGA-craziness, antisemitism, and bonkers behaviour. It's cost him a lot, and I fear he is nearly at the point of flushing his career completely down the toilet (although I have found think pieces extending back earlier than this album that ask the same question about 'How much further can he go?" Let me put it this way, if I read a headline tomorrow that Kayne had murdered someone, I wouldn't be surprised.) I think, for me, he has just gone too far. I admire elements of his production skills (although this record is deliberately difficult to listen to), but, frankly, he is that great of a rapper. Love his first four or five albums (not represented on this list, I notice), but this is the album where he has gone too far for me.
Not for me. Didn't find any of the tracks engaging except Black Skinhead.
Didn’t care for most of this. The one song that sampled Strange Fruit was the highlight.
Been a while. Have a lot of these on my gym playlist.
Worst Kanye album of his earlier years lol
The beats are pretty interesting. This album is unlistenable because of the lyrics. Can Kanye rap about anything aside from how great he is?
Kanye is an antisemite/10
4/10 he can’t be fucking serious 💀 this feels like a shitpost
34/100
Hold My Liquor-kertosäe). 2+
Kanye’s ego coming through strong on this one. Some nice production throughout, always good to hear JV on a Kayne track. But it almost feels satirical, the fact that it isn’t makes it hard to get past.
His earlier stuff is better. Black Skinhead was the only song I'd listen to again. Too many songs were about how great he is. Ugh. 2/5
The mixing is superb and the lyrics are channeling big Mr Yuck face energy.
this was my first time listening to an album by kanye west. i can understand the allure, the music is pretty catchy. but the lyrics? he comes across as an angry sex obsessed narcissist. and that’s in EVERY song. case in point: in the song “blood on the leaves”, there is a song with a repetitive sample of nina simone’s rendition of “strange fruit”. “strange fruit” is a very powerful song, yet somehow kanye makes the song about himself and starts rapping about some beef he has with jay-z? it was just weird. also, it seems as if he keeps saying the “n word” and “bitch” just for the sake of saying them. i know some people consider him a genius, but if this is an example to point to for that, count me out. i don’t get it. there’s just no “there” there.
Really enjoy Kanye's earlier albums so I had high hopes. The background tracks are outstanding. The producing was top notch up until the moment that he put lyrics on the beat. At times this is up there with the worst rapping I've heard. I went back and listened to College Dropout to see if it was just me misremembering how good Kanye was. He actually contradicts his own song Jesus Walks with Yeezus. This album's lyrics lack passion and direction and are just another lazy attempt at a cash grab. He literally rhymes the same word 7 or 8 times, how is this considered good?
I thought this was meme music 2/5
This is just all over the place with wild mood swings between terrible noise and some decent, interesting rhymes. I guess this album is not long before Kanye's full meltdown into the Trump world Swamp. It should be a 1 because it is really awful but I'll round up because of my new grading rubric and it had a few good rhymes
He's a good rapper, IMHO. The clarity of the lyrics considering the speed of his voice is really remarkable. Unfortunately, that just means you can really clearly hear all the sexism, self-aggrandisement and so on. I'd say I'm not angry about this one, just disappointed. Wins marks for some great sampling, but couldn't quite rescue it. Maybe it's harsh to look back on this after Ye has gone full nut-nut, as you hear songs like I Am A God and realise that he genuinely means it, rather than appreciating it for (probably) the best song on the record.
Ik had het slechter verwacht. Maar toch sijpelt het goed door dat Kanye net iets te vol van zichzelf is
Someone needs to tell him that 300 wasn't the Romans... I didn't dislike this as much as the last one. But meh overall. Plus he's just so angry all the time! There were some catchy tunes on this one though. So I would say 2 - 2.5. I'll stick with 2 because fuck Kanye.
Rap. De praat-stem van deze meneer is niet heel aangenaam. De beats zijn soms wel leuk, dus toch 2 sterren. **
Not my thing
Hip hop
I'll be honest I have very little patience for this Ye era. Even before all the anti-Semitic shit became more widely known, as much as I appreciate the production and the blending of genres and musical ideas that go into his tracks, the lyrics and POV are a big turn off for me.
Definitely not my taste. Too misogynistic and violent.
Pretentious, hiding behind arty beats
I really like what he's doing musically here, but some of the lyrics are just atrocious, so much so that it completely ruins it for me. I can respect Kanye West - I've given multiple albums of his fives on here, but knowing how things have played out in his life, this just sounds like a man starting to slowly go insane. On "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" that seemed exciting, but this is the dark flipside to that coin, and it makes me kinda sad.
I wants to hate everything about this…but I found out it wasn’t completely trash. My most surprising 2 star rating so far!
I didn’t care for this at all. Super abrasive. I do wonder what I would have thought if I had heard this album prior to everything that’s happened with Kanye over the last several years, because in a vacuum, I think the content of this album would still make me think Kanye was an aggrieved megalomaniac. It m giving this an extra star only because I was impressed by some of the arrangements.
He has some ideas and things to say, but there’s little follow-through. The beats are lazy. Even when the raps open with a strong thesis, the rhymes and construction fall flat. Overall, lazy compared to even his least-inspired previous work. He’s better than this.
5/10
Pros: alternative/industrial sounds are kinda neat, as well as the samples used Cons: lyrics, the fact that I've grown to dislike Kanye's voice, the fact that I've grown to dislike Kanye as a person
I hate Kanye West. I love Kanye West's music. I hate this album. Black Skinhead and Bound 2 are two of the most unique and appealing songs Kanye West has ever made. I also like New Slaves and Blood on the Leaves. Hold My Liquor can be okay in a certain mood. IMO the rest of the record can be skipped.
Probably the most overrated album of all time
“My mind moves like a Tron bike, pop a wheelie on the zeitgeist” Every track sounds so good, production and construction. And he has flashes of lyrical brilliance and interesting commentary. But his words and personality are inseparable from the music and they’re mostly insufferable.
Mostly nonsense with the occassional decent moment
Notable for being the exact moment Ye lost his mind and very little else. Load of bollocks.
I can't rate Kanye objectively anymore. It's a shame and I hope he gets help.
Mira, a este socio le celebraban hasta los peos. Este disco tiene unas canciones buenas, pero el resto es un desperdicio.
Is Yeezus a character or persona that Kanye is taking on, ala Bowie's Ziggy Stardust or Thin White Duke? There seem to be conflicting reports. But either way, it is strange to think about such personas in light of Ye's mental health struggles. Regardless, "Yeezus" was a brash attempt by West to defy expectations and genres and yadda yadda yadda... "On Sight" grabs you right away. It's different. It's interesting. Kanye's flow is great as always. But the content disturbs. The interlude is weird. And then the novelty of the blips wears out at the end. "Black Skinhead" is another attention-grabber, another fresh sound. And while it may at first seem like it's just brash and doesn't really mean much, in the context of Ye's recent antics I wondered the whole time why it was called "Black Skinhead" and whether hints of his coming anti-semitism would be found in the song. People thought it was brilliant at the time though. Jack White even covered it (which is weird). "I Am a God" then launches the concept into a new stratusphere. It's a good thing I read about the Yeezus character/persona/whatever before getting to this track, because listening to this in 2023 after the year West has had would make me uncomforta... actually no wait this still makes me uncomfortable. But it's actually just supposed to be empowering for people? That everyone is a god, not just Kanye/Yeezus/Ye? "New Slaves" then follows up the god complex with some brilliant commentary, and all of this writing and unique sound and production leaves you a little in awe of what West is attempting here, at the very least. Then again, it seems each track has around 10 listed writers and 4+ producers, so how much of it is actually West and how much is the assembled team? It just goes downhill in a mess of production from there, and the album combined with the Wikipedia page breaking it down left me with a headache. The tracks descend into excessive lewdness and seem like a scattered patchwork, with several songs suddenly transforming or interjecting randomness that doesn't fit. And that totally tracks with the description of how this album was produced. But that didn't stop critics from throwing themselves at it with hilarious attempts to explain it's brilliance. Analyses of the album as a whole and individual songs are all over the place but for their common refrains of brilliant, opus, gripping, and even "high-art." But most amusingly, Pitchfork readers voted it both Most Overrated Album of 2013 as well as Most Underrated Album of 2013. My vote is for overrated.
Vapid low-effort rapping with reasonably good production, lightly inflected by industrial music (which apparently enough for people to convince themselves this is groundbreaking). I wish Kanye would talk about his dick and his ego a bit more, because there are at least three lines that don't mention these things. 2* unfocused boring shite.
Urgg
a disclaimer: kanye is antisemitic. i don't believe in separating the art from the artist because the artist creates art from their worldview. but i did listen to this album, which was my third of his so far, because i want to be thorough. some of this album could be catchy. some of it could also be too repetitive for me to enjoy. it wasn't as long as the other two albums i've heard; kanye was able to be succinct while still getting his message across. and he made some very good choices--using a "strange fruit" sample in "blood on the leaves" is brilliant. his use of electronic separates this album from the other two, and i wasn't surprised to see daft punk's name all over. i'm not a fan of the racism in his lyrics, either. i find it hard to vote for this. i've given him a 1 before on the basis of who he is. he's lucky he isn't getting a solid 1 from me.
I can’t separate the art from the artist here. I like some of his older stuff (Graduation and 808s era) but I can’t with this narcissistic, antisemitic clown. He’s mentally ill and I hope some day will see the errors of his ways. Until then, I can’t take his music seriously.
Huh, tämä levy taas muistutti miksi en ole koskaan digannut Kanyen musasta. Paska!
Muutama vekkuli kipale
Disappointed. Although I prefer to not have to think about Kanye at all, I hope for some catchy beats. This album did not do that for me. Maybe two fleeting moments of "Ah, here we go. ... Oh, guess not."
I was making a cringey face through much of it but there are a couple of tracks that are incredibly catchy and I enjoyed them despite myself. I especially appreciated the vocal delivery on some of the rap tracks --- an intensity in West's voice and the intake of breath that made the stakes seem high even as the words themselves seemed pretty banal at times. I had to look at the lyrics to blood on the leaves to make sure that I was hearing correctly that the main thrust of West's lyrics are about partying and doing Molly against the sample of Nina Simone's Strange Fruit. But again, the song is hella catchy and I listened several times. I don't want to hear much of this again but I thought about it a lot today.
I just don't like his music
Några okej idéer i ett adhd-flöde av rätt dåliga idéer. Textmässigt pinsamt många gånger och den där jävla vocodern/auto-tunen!
As someone who doesn't like Kanye I found this interesting musically. I don't like his style or persona but found the people he brought to make this for him came up with a hard edged sound i liked. Unfortunately I just cannot stand him at all so found the whole experience uncomfortable.
I like Kanye but I don’t find his albums very consistent. This is quite interesting given what happens to him later!
Oh boy, Kanye West, he has had quite a tumultuous and controversial public life these past couple of years. It's getting harder and harder be able to separate the artist from the music. He is a narcissistic massive piece of shit who needs mental help and to be out of the spotlight for a while. His views are reprehensible and way out of line. I enjoyed his early work, the first couple of albums. This album is really awful and it just shows how much he has fallen off professionally and personally. Garbage person, garbage album.
nao curti muito, pouco agradavel os fadinho
The album is alright. The beats are good. The lyrics and rapping are unremarkable. It is better than a 2, but not really a 3. I'll round down
I guess it's fine as far as rap goes.
Very angry guy A lot about sex and money Nice beats
Save for a few hits, pretty mid kanye album imo Bound 2
I dislike his bragadociousness and misogyny, but he has good samples and flow. I want to either like this more or hate it, but I'm honestly struggling to do either with much emotion.
1/10, 10%
There is a school of people who think anything Kanye does deserves attention. I never attended such a school.
Not an amazing album.
Hur otroligt det än kan låta, så har jag sett karln live. Än mer otroligt, så är det inte katastrofalt dåligt. Tro nu inte att jag gillar det här men några låtar har ju någon form av melodi vilket gör att han undviker lägsta betyg.
After the success of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy KW decided to piss off his fans by putting out an intentionally abrasive and off-putting album. He's quoted as "I got to fuck shit up" and "I'm gonna take my ball home". There's no doubt that this egotistic narcissist is brilliant, but does the emperor have no clothes? He's so full of contempt for his fans that it's really hard to like this guy. This album is seriously over-produced, with literally 4-8 producers on EACH song. I view this album like how I view his forays into fashion where he intentionally puts out really fugly clothing and sells it at exorbitant prices to his gullible fans. I'm not gonna bite.
Impressive beats and production. What really drags down the album is Kanye West. I never really liked his style of rapping and I find Kanye uneven. Sometimes he's great but other times I think there's so many better rappers than Kanye and that's even when ignoring his personality. I think I'm sticking to other hip-hop artists instead of Kanye as I've never found anything he made that's interesting.
The lyrics are a bit much, though I did enjoy the beats and sampling.
Not a fan.
I enjoyed the beats more than the lyrics. Strange Fruit was an odd choice of sample. There's a sense of drama that builds up. This may have been amplified as I listened to the album whilst a workman was drilling up the road outside. The Daft Punk contribution added a little humour. I couldn't hear Rik Rubin's efforts.
Yeah nah.
Don’t like it sorry. This kind of aggressive hip hop, never my cup of tea
There were a couple of songs here which I knew from being huge, and they were ok. But otherwise I didn’t enjoy this.
he's always been mentally ill and a mediocre artist on his best days
A hip-hop album that seems to want to be an industrial or noise rock album. The bombastic rhymes are well matched by the bombastic samples and the “more is more” production choices, sound effects and beats. Its popularity is what it is, one supposes, but this fails to land for me.
Some very nice and creative sounds in there, but then the singing starts and I just can't stand hip-hop (sorry).
I thought I'd like this more, but other than blackskinhead which was cool and the bound 2 hook which was fun I really couldn't get around it and was waiting for the album to end. 3/10
a while back I had to google why people love him - it actually made me appreciate his music talent. but i can't get myself to support the art of a character like his.
terrible lyrics, raunchy. sounds behind were good.
First Kanye album I've listened to... Music = 5 stars Kanye = makes me hate rap. Insufferable. 0 stars
It’s hard to separate Kanye’s music from his batsh*t behavior to give a fair evaluation. Even when you succeed, you can’t help but feel this album is wildly anti-women and there is much less irony to I Am A God than we’d like to believe.
Just not interested anymore. Someone has forgotten about beats and melody and having a sense of humour
Not my cup of tea... Entertaining but not much else.
Hi: On Sight, I Am A God, Hold My Liquor Lo: I'm In It, Blood On The Leaves Kanye experiments with a variety of musical textures, which the variety of are truly the highlight of this album. Lyrically, West also makes some pointed social commentary (New Slaves, Hold My Liquor), through some well-crafted rhymes and verses that paint a vivid word picture. A running theme throughout is the \"oh wait i\" gag where Kanye would reflect on the previous verse and try to change the narrative, which got old quick. Any musical prowess displayed is ruined by use of autotuned vocals, an aesthetic choice that just grates on my nerves. And at the end of the day, Kanye just sounds like an edgelord, interspersing overly offensive & racist lyrics that distract and do a disservice to the whole message. 2 stars.
I just don't care man. Really don't.
Not as good as the others. 2/5
