I'll be honest I have very little patience for this Ye era. Even before all the anti-Semitic shit became more widely known, as much as I appreciate the production and the blending of genres and musical ideas that go into his tracks, the lyrics and POV are a big turn off for me.

Pretentious, hiding behind arty beats

I really like what he's doing musically here, but some of the lyrics are just atrocious, so much so that it completely ruins it for me. I can respect Kanye West - I've given multiple albums of his fives on here, but knowing how things have played out in his life, this just sounds like a man starting to slowly go insane. On "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" that seemed exciting, but this is the dark flipside to that coin, and it makes me kinda sad.

I didn’t care for this at all. Super abrasive. I do wonder what I would have thought if I had heard this album prior to everything that’s happened with Kanye over the last several years, because in a vacuum, I think the content of this album would still make me think Kanye was an aggrieved megalomaniac. It m giving this an extra star only because I was impressed by some of the arrangements.

He has some ideas and things to say, but there’s little follow-through. The beats are lazy. Even when the raps open with a strong thesis, the rhymes and construction fall flat. Overall, lazy compared to even his least-inspired previous work. He’s better than this.

I hate Kanye West. I love Kanye West's music. I hate this album. Black Skinhead and Bound 2 are two of the most unique and appealing songs Kanye West has ever made. I also like New Slaves and Blood on the Leaves. Hold My Liquor can be okay in a certain mood. IMO the rest of the record can be skipped.

“My mind moves like a Tron bike, pop a wheelie on the zeitgeist” Every track sounds so good, production and construction. And he has flashes of lyrical brilliance and interesting commentary. But his words and personality are inseparable from the music and they’re mostly insufferable.

Is Yeezus a character or persona that Kanye is taking on, ala Bowie's Ziggy Stardust or Thin White Duke? There seem to be conflicting reports. But either way, it is strange to think about such personas in light of Ye's mental health struggles. Regardless, "Yeezus" was a brash attempt by West to defy expectations and genres and yadda yadda yadda... "On Sight" grabs you right away. It's different. It's interesting. Kanye's flow is great as always. But the content disturbs. The interlude is weird. And then the novelty of the blips wears out at the end. "Black Skinhead" is another attention-grabber, another fresh sound. And while it may at first seem like it's just brash and doesn't really mean much, in the context of Ye's recent antics I wondered the whole time why it was called "Black Skinhead" and whether hints of his coming anti-semitism would be found in the song. People thought it was brilliant at the time though. Jack White even covered it (which is weird). "I Am a God" then launches the concept into a new stratusphere. It's a good thing I read about the Yeezus character/persona/whatever before getting to this track, because listening to this in 2023 after the year West has had would make me uncomforta... actually no wait this still makes me uncomfortable. But it's actually just supposed to be empowering for people? That everyone is a god, not just Kanye/Yeezus/Ye? "New Slaves" then follows up the god complex with some brilliant commentary, and all of this writing and unique sound and production leaves you a little in awe of what West is attempting here, at the very least. Then again, it seems each track has around 10 listed writers and 4+ producers, so how much of it is actually West and how much is the assembled team? It just goes downhill in a mess of production from there, and the album combined with the Wikipedia page breaking it down left me with a headache. The tracks descend into excessive lewdness and seem like a scattered patchwork, with several songs suddenly transforming or interjecting randomness that doesn't fit. And that totally tracks with the description of how this album was produced. But that didn't stop critics from throwing themselves at it with hilarious attempts to explain it's brilliance. Analyses of the album as a whole and individual songs are all over the place but for their common refrains of brilliant, opus, gripping, and even "high-art." But most amusingly, Pitchfork readers voted it both Most Overrated Album of 2013 as well as Most Underrated Album of 2013. My vote is for overrated.

Vapid low-effort rapping with reasonably good production, lightly inflected by industrial music (which apparently enough for people to convince themselves this is groundbreaking). I wish Kanye would talk about his dick and his ego a bit more, because there are at least three lines that don't mention these things. 2* unfocused boring shite.

a disclaimer: kanye is antisemitic. i don't believe in separating the art from the artist because the artist creates art from their worldview. but i did listen to this album, which was my third of his so far, because i want to be thorough. some of this album could be catchy. some of it could also be too repetitive for me to enjoy. it wasn't as long as the other two albums i've heard; kanye was able to be succinct while still getting his message across. and he made some very good choices--using a "strange fruit" sample in "blood on the leaves" is brilliant. his use of electronic separates this album from the other two, and i wasn't surprised to see daft punk's name all over. i'm not a fan of the racism in his lyrics, either. i find it hard to vote for this. i've given him a 1 before on the basis of who he is. he's lucky he isn't getting a solid 1 from me.

I can’t separate the art from the artist here. I like some of his older stuff (Graduation and 808s era) but I can’t with this narcissistic, antisemitic clown. He’s mentally ill and I hope some day will see the errors of his ways. Until then, I can’t take his music seriously.

Disappointed. Although I prefer to not have to think about Kanye at all, I hope for some catchy beats. This album did not do that for me. Maybe two fleeting moments of "Ah, here we go. ... Oh, guess not."

I was making a cringey face through much of it but there are a couple of tracks that are incredibly catchy and I enjoyed them despite myself. I especially appreciated the vocal delivery on some of the rap tracks --- an intensity in West's voice and the intake of breath that made the stakes seem high even as the words themselves seemed pretty banal at times. I had to look at the lyrics to blood on the leaves to make sure that I was hearing correctly that the main thrust of West's lyrics are about partying and doing Molly against the sample of Nina Simone's Strange Fruit. But again, the song is hella catchy and I listened several times. I don't want to hear much of this again but I thought about it a lot today.

As someone who doesn't like Kanye I found this interesting musically. I don't like his style or persona but found the people he brought to make this for him came up with a hard edged sound i liked. Unfortunately I just cannot stand him at all so found the whole experience uncomfortable.

Oh boy, Kanye West, he has had quite a tumultuous and controversial public life these past couple of years. It's getting harder and harder be able to separate the artist from the music. He is a narcissistic massive piece of shit who needs mental help and to be out of the spotlight for a while. His views are reprehensible and way out of line. I enjoyed his early work, the first couple of albums. This album is really awful and it just shows how much he has fallen off professionally and personally. Garbage person, garbage album.

After the success of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy KW decided to piss off his fans by putting out an intentionally abrasive and off-putting album. He's quoted as "I got to fuck shit up" and "I'm gonna take my ball home". There's no doubt that this egotistic narcissist is brilliant, but does the emperor have no clothes? He's so full of contempt for his fans that it's really hard to like this guy. This album is seriously over-produced, with literally 4-8 producers on EACH song. I view this album like how I view his forays into fashion where he intentionally puts out really fugly clothing and sells it at exorbitant prices to his gullible fans. I'm not gonna bite.

Impressive beats and production. What really drags down the album is Kanye West. I never really liked his style of rapping and I find Kanye uneven. Sometimes he's great but other times I think there's so many better rappers than Kanye and that's even when ignoring his personality. I think I'm sticking to other hip-hop artists instead of Kanye as I've never found anything he made that's interesting.

The lyrics are a bit much, though I did enjoy the beats and sampling.

I enjoyed the beats more than the lyrics. Strange Fruit was an odd choice of sample. There's a sense of drama that builds up. This may have been amplified as I listened to the album whilst a workman was drilling up the road outside. The Daft Punk contribution added a little humour. I couldn't hear Rik Rubin's efforts.

A hip-hop album that seems to want to be an industrial or noise rock album. The bombastic rhymes are well matched by the bombastic samples and the “more is more” production choices, sound effects and beats. Its popularity is what it is, one supposes, but this fails to land for me.

Some very nice and creative sounds in there, but then the singing starts and I just can't stand hip-hop (sorry).

I thought I'd like this more, but other than blackskinhead which was cool and the bound 2 hook which was fun I really couldn't get around it and was waiting for the album to end. 3/10

Hi: On Sight, I Am A God, Hold My Liquor Lo: I'm In It, Blood On The Leaves Kanye experiments with a variety of musical textures, which the variety of are truly the highlight of this album. Lyrically, West also makes some pointed social commentary (New Slaves, Hold My Liquor), through some well-crafted rhymes and verses that paint a vivid word picture. A running theme throughout is the \"oh wait i\" gag where Kanye would reflect on the previous verse and try to change the narrative, which got old quick. Any musical prowess displayed is ruined by use of autotuned vocals, an aesthetic choice that just grates on my nerves. And at the end of the day, Kanye just sounds like an edgelord, interspersing overly offensive & racist lyrics that distract and do a disservice to the whole message. 2 stars.

Death Grips is a cool band

My couple of years doing this list have lined up pretty closely with the fall of Kanye West. Right now, it seems like they’re trying to rehab him and get him out there again. I guess someone figures they can still make money off of Kanye West t-shirts, as long as they don’t give him the keys to the website so he can put swastikas on em again. Fool me once.

I saw him live once. Waited so long for him to come out the drink I had pregamed with wore off. Show wasn't bad though. I used to enjoy his stuff, good lyrics, flow and beat. Then he started talking all Hitler was a good guy and went on Alex Jones with a white supremacist. I hope he gets the help he needs, but I'm not giving him anymore of my money. This would be a 4-5 star album. I can't give it that though.

This has been one hell of a week for me on this generator. Earlier in the week, I had an album credited to an objectively bad person, and now here we are again, in the same dilemma. Again, my question remains, do we separate the art from the artist? Better yet, does it matter this time around in regards to my rating? The artist(Nazi) in question is still alive, and still financially benefits from us, the people, listening to his music. I'll let you all fight about that one. Hell, even the title of this album reeks of arrogance, and narcissism. Really, that argument doesn't matter much anyway because this album is a pile of dogshit even if we disregard the artist who created it(I know Lou Reed was a legend, but his taste in albums is questionable at times). According to the Wikipedia page, I'm relieved that I'm finished with his albums in this generator(if any of you submitted one of his albums in the generator, shame on you). Favorite Track: "Bound 2".

I'm still not sure how to feel about Kanye's good albums. I haven't listened to them since the Nazi controversy and all those other stunts. However, it is easy to give this album just one star, mainly for non-musical reasons.

Industrial hip hop and experimental rap built from abrasive synths, distorted samples, pounding drums, and confrontational vocals feels like being trapped inside a malfunctioning nightclub where every sound is deliberately designed to make you uncomfortable. The album is bold, chaotic, and undeniably distinctive, but its aggression often feels more exhausting than exciting to me. I can appreciate the willingness to strip away polish and embrace ugliness, yet the constant sonic assault makes it difficult for me to actually enjoy.

I dutifully listened to this from beginning to end, probably at least partially in response to my project partner's absolutely incredible output in the past few days. I've heard it said that three kids is the easiest number to parent, but this is ridiculous (and provides me regular delightful happy moments when i get to see a new red number next my notifications every time I open this website). One thing about kanye you can't deny: he never really hid the kind of person that he is. So tainted with excrement that there honestly isn't really much this album can do to eliminate the odour.

I found this album to be very aggressive and not palletteable.

In a nutshell: hold my drink. "For me as Kanye West, I got to fuck shit up... I'm going to take music and try to make it three dimensional... I'm not here to make easy listening, easily programmable music." Kanye West (NME, September 23rd 2013) I have raised this argument in some reviews: "Can you separate the art from the artist?" IMHO, there are three answers to this: "yes", "no" and "not anymore". Kanye is a great example of the "not anymore" argument. In context with his albums in the generator, I could say yes in retrospect for The College Dropout. Yes, but only just for MBDTF (but I'm due to revisit this album, so opinion subject to change). For Yeezus, it's a confident NO. Greg Kot from the Chicago Tribune summed it up perfectly. It's "hostile, abrasive and intentionally off-putting". Kanye West went from a producer/solo artist with ambition and swagger to a sanctimonious and self indulgent twat whose music emphasises his shortcomings. Oh how the mighty fall... Overall: 1/10 (1 star)

There is perhaps a little bit too much happening in the first track, which made it difficult for me to dive into the record. I think I preferred the following tracks, where the rhythm and melodies settle down a bit. Great discovery overall, I will definitely listen to it again! I tried, I really did. This sounded interesting on paper - experimental electronica with input from Daft Punk should be just my thing and releasing it on an unlabelled cd with a clear case is a nice touch. However it was less than a minute before the first “bitch” and “hoe” which was an immediate nope from me. Fuck that guy.

Turns out this narcissism comes through all the songs from the lyrics to the titles (I am a God - really???). He samples some really good (and surprising) stuff - Omega and King Crimson! Some of the least bad songs are I am a God, Guilt Trip, and Bound 2.

In many ways better than gangster rap. Better use of samples, more variety, some interesting takes on genres (most notably the afrobeat sample on Black Skinhead). But I can’t get away from firstly his obvious insane god complex, the fucking dreadful and continuous use of auto-tune throughout the album and the excessive attempts to shock with the language and tone of the lyrics. I toyed with a 2, but only briefly. Hated it.

So I decided a long time ago when I got a Kanye album I wouldn’t listen to it. There’s no way I can without actually funding a fucking nutjob Nazi. This after more than 750 albums is my first one which is crazy since I have at least 2 others. I do remember listening to it when it was released. It was peak Kanye is a genius time. I remember thinking this album fucking sucked. And that he was overrated at best, and a fucking talentless hack at worst. Bound 2 is the only track I have any fondness for and that’s because it kinda sucks in a way I dig. Any I’m going to listen to an album that is not on this list or at time of writing the user list but I’ve wanted to listen to for a while. I’ve tried listening to Geordie Greep’s The New Sound and I always stop after track one. The problem is I love the first song. The character he’s describing sucks so bad in a good way. But I’ve never gone farther. And so here we go. Really enjoy it. Inventive music about horrible scumbags, like YOU the listener. 4.5/5

First the Louvin Brothers and then Kanye West with "Yezzus"—it's like someone's trying to send me to hell. This MAGA-gangsta combo is really hard to stomach; for me, as someone who relies on immunosuppressants, it's simply unpalatable. Perhaps these two genres even have their place. I know nothing about the brothers themselves; what I do know about West is just disgusting. Oh hell, there are the titles of his songs: "Black Skinhead," "I Am A God"... I really don't know what the point is. The music is very electronic, but not really good. I always feel sick when I read the production list on albums like this—unbelievable. So, to make it perfectly clear in the end, I don't like the album, and I see no reason why it should be on any "best of" list.

This guy is so unbearably self-centred that it's hard to take anything he does seriously. But even when trying to leave my prejudgement at the door, it's just unpleasant to listen to. His rapping style has a kind of aggression that feels extremely performative, the lyrics are imbecilic, the repurposing of old civil rights slogans to be about sex is in extremely poor taste. Beyond this the sound is abrasive - reading the Wikipedia page for the album it seems that he got it into his head that making something that sounds bad on purpose had artistic merit??? Also this album has like 7 producers, how did nobody tell him it was shit?

Didn’t listen but at one point I thought this was incredible. The minimalist production performed in a maximalist style was striking, nothing else sounded like this. However, just like Kanye this has aged horribly. Fuck Nazis. Stop listening to Kanye and stop falling over yourself to accept his transparent “apologies” he wheels out whenever he has new music to promote.

I try as best as I can to be diplomatic when it comes Kanye. When it comes to him as a human he's a egotistical megalomaniac. On the music side I can't deny he's produced some great tracks over his career. I thought this album started off quite well with On Sight and even Black Skinhead, however I Am God started and suddenly the megalomania was bursting out at the seams. I get rappers love to brag about their statuses but soldiering through this until Blood on the Leaves, I felt like I was being tied to a chair being forced to indulge in the biggest messiah complex in hip hop. Great producer but yeah the wheels fell off greatly on this.

Sampled a few 15-20 second clips to get the general vibe- I may have appreciated the electronic, sci-fi-influenced, mood if not for the histrionics of said artist. And I’m not referencing his bipolar although this also sounded immensely manic (“I am Jesus”).

Started to listen out of curiousity and didn't enjoy it - not worth continuing given the type of person he has become. I also didn't find the rap that appealing, perhaps spoilt by more complex rap from other rappers/bands.

Kanye är arg. Oklart varför. Det är också oklart varför jag ska lägga tid på detta elände. Beatsen är bombastiska och trista. Texterna är kassa. Visst finns är fina samplingar, men jag lyssnar hellre på originalen. I Kanyes händer blir det en trist soppa på rostig spik.

This album came out when I was in high school, and somehow I completely avoided it. And if this is what it's like to listen to Kanye West without nostalgia, then I'm really glad I listened to some of his older stuff when I was young, because this was roooooough. The mix is loud, noisier than musical. And as much as you could call it ahead of its time or some other cliche, it couldn't help but feel like it's trying way too hard to be. The samples didn't work for me like prior Kanye albums, and ultimately I think it really is one of the very few albums where I found myself desperately wanting to skip songs. Yikes.

Very difficult to listen to Kanye West objectively. Before I knew what a shithead he is, I liked a lot of what he did and thought he was a musical pioneer. Not this record though. Leaving aside my disdain for him, I found lyrics to be misogynistic, juvenile, and crass. The music wasn’t breaking much ground here either. His earlier records were worlds better. This one doesn’t deserve to be in this list.

Do I have to? As always with Kanye, the production is good but the bars are god awful.

Let's start with the positive bits. I genuinely like the synth riffs and many of the backing parts. Although having read about it they make a big deal about how these are really aggressive and anything vaguely tuneful or nice was dumped for more edgy sounds. Well, that is rubbish. There isn't really anything edgy here and suggests to me that Kanye and his crew aren't actually that wide ranging in their musical influences. Next, I think he has a good rhythm and flow, he's clearly figured out how to get the best out of his voice. Right. Onto the crux of the matter. Kanye can piss off. So much of this album is him playing the victim, lording over everyone telling us how bad we are cos of racism. Obviously this is a valid point, but when every other line from him is laced with pure misogynism any preaching he tries to do just falls flat. I'm totally fed up of hip hop artists decrying everyone else for persecuting them while at exactly the same time openly saying things that make 80s glam rock band sound like feminists. It's pathetic. You can top this review off by pointing out Kanye's Nazi affiliations, but it doesn't seem that much of a jump from what I'm listening to. Look, I might be missing the point, I'm not in a minority, I haven't experienced the racism that is prevalent, especially it seems, in America... But I also know not to be an absolute shit to women. I was gonna put 2 cos of the music being good... But I'm just fed up of this whole approach and our if everyone Kanye deserves the bigger rebuke. So 1 it is.

I really cranked up the volume and tried to immerse myself completely to try and separate my personal bias.. This is just terrible, he uses the worst of every genre, embarrassing use of vocal modulator, weak rhymes and turbulent, almost non-existent flow.

This album is like the full crazy terrible parts of College Dropout without the relatibility. Kanye's ego is out of control. College dropout had redeeming features beyond the melodies, Yeezus does not. Yeah fuck this album.

Even before he went of the rails and needed serious help from a mental healt professional (feels obvious that this man is delusional and not fit to even spend a second on social media) he was praised for his production skills, so does it hold up... nope. He has a lot of help from very famous producers and his sampling can be random and break the tone. his rap is your average rap but a bit angrier, so nothing special. Last track made me wanna listen to the way better song by Sigma that sampled some of the bits. Overall, Overhyped. Get this guy to a therapist and stop giving him a microphone and a twitter account.

"If Kanye West was a horse, he'd have been put down by now" That was my attitude going into this album, and I was totally prepared to give it 1*. That said, the production of this album really picks up in the latter half, and there's some really good instrumentation and features throughout. With all of that in mind, Yeesuz gets 1 beautiful star, one more than it deserves. Having Justin Vernon do his thing over some real fucking cool electric guitar solos only to interrupt it by dribbling like a brain-dead fuckwit is a crime I cannot forgive. Fuck you Kanye, eat shit.

Can remember being quite impressed by previous missives by Kanye, so I looked back to check them out. And yes I was sort of impressed by them , impressed enough to award both of them a 2! it's just a shame that this load of twaddle didn't reach those dizzying heights. no redeeming features 1.

That was a little insight into the world of Kanye. Mad, egotistical, angry and rude.

On a positive note, I did find the arrangements of many of the songs intriguing and could appreciate the Punk/ Industrial Rap moniker given to this record. But there were many moments of things becoming jarring, such as the big single 'Bound 2', horrible. The other positive thing was the overt usage of auto tune, it was not subtle and probably used as a dig at other artists who feel they have to use it? I don't know. I shall end my list of positives there. Moving on to the lyrically side of things, for once I wss in a posttion to concentrate on them. I wished I hadn't. I just do not understand why someone feels the need to write such vile diatribe. The level of misogyny is breathtaking. I do wonder what his listeners choose to take away from an album such as this, especially if you are female. It does make me wonder about the the effect of the normalisation of such behaviours discussed on this record has on his young and impressionable fans, it must skew their worldview in some way. It must have some sort of effect, especially as in the news, our government is seeking to make non-fatal strangulation in porn illegal, which is just another form.of misogyny seeping into everyday life for the younger generations. Maybe to old Jeezy it is all just a joke, one I just don't get. It is possible he is a really nice bloke just making stuff to shock, but I'm not sure judging by what I've read and seen in the media over the years. Oh well, I may just be getting old and these behavours are becoming normal, sorry ladies. Stand up for yourselves and strangle the bastard back or something.... Move along to the next album please.

This album has interesting elements to it, including the production, which was kind of cool but halfway through Black Skinhead I’m realizing 1) his history completely messed up and 2) he’s a narcissist prick and has had to devolve into shock value to show his irrelevance in the modern rap world. So if I was using this album as an example of how rockstar‘s lifestyles become toxic and even potentially devolved in to madness, I could give this 5. But this is Kanye: fuck him.
