I hadn't heard his music before, at least not that I remember. I gave this a listen and gave it an honest try. It just doesn't do it for me. It sounds like he's trying to be controversial and provocative in many tracks, and I get it, but it feels too ham-handed for me.

Booooo Kanye - not worth the antisemitism

As hard as it can be to take seriously a man who declares, apparently without irony, ‘I Am A God’, the dark, abrasive production and intense delivery do give this album the feeling of a powerful, important statement - sometimes. On a few tracks it all comes together and feels thrillingly vital, while the desire to push sonic boundaries is admirable. However, 90% of the album sounds kinda claustrophobic and joyless. Which is fine if every track is a hard-hitting classic, but they’re not - the lyrics often don’t match the gravity of the music.

I'm not really surprised that this ends up in my 1-star-shitload-of-crap-dumpster, but I am surprised that there is actually an audience for this... This might be the worst thing I ever heard.

Oh my gosh what a pile of twaddle. There is no doubt that this man had talents, two major ones being that he can convince people to buy his music and also convince women to be his play things, but the musical talent is so misdirected in this album. I wish I could unhear. Also wish I could unsee the video with Kim K - on a bike, facing the wrong way but the wind is blowing her hair out of her face? That what a step too far in expecting me to suspend my disbelief.

It doesn't really sound like anything else I've ever heard, so I guess there's that? I do quite like some of the weird electronic noises throughout, but everything else that goes with it, rapping, lyrical content etc, is shit. I was going to give an extra star for production, but I realised I hated the content so much that I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Kanye West is a piece of shit, and a gay fish.

I enjoyed listening to this album, even if it hasnt aged well if some parts (the over reliance on autotuning being my main gripe). Some really good bars in songs that don’t quite fit together for me. Personally, I enjoy the sample driven songs more, so bound 2 was one of my favourites. Overall a mixed bag so 3/5

groundbreaking, after my beautiful dark twisted fantasy everybody expected something similar and kanye surprised them with this. at the time not well received, now an instant classic. amazing production and sound. character aside, one of the most creative artists of this century.

Gotta give the Devil his due. Amazing album

Love this album so much. It doesn't miss anywhere at any point for me. Insane lyrics, revolutionary experimental sound, and Kanye just shows his musical and artistic genius the most out of all his albums here imo. Simply Kanye at his apex and the direction he's decided to take his persona lately I find irrelevant here. Can't give it any less than 9.5/10. Man's paved a completely new path in music with this one.

A mixed bag for me. Some of it is brilliant, the album's highs are extremely... high. And it's quite an influential album. Still wouldn't say it's really for me. Also Káně is a certified éshoul, sadly. So there's that.

Not a fan of Kanye the person, but he did develop a unique sound and definitely left his mark on the genre. And, as much as I hate to admit it, this is a good album. I'm even giving him a bump up from 3 stars to 4 because he is an artist worthy of the list.

Fuck this guy, but I hate to admit it, I think this might be my favorite album of his. Something about the hip hop-industrial mix grabs me by the balls and spins me around. Sprinkle in some completely bizarre bullshit like sampling the Super Mario 64 Chain Chomp on "I'm In It" (I'm not going crazy, that's what that was, right?), the Hungarian classic Gyöngyhajú lány (amazing song, jó napot) on "New Slaves", also just the entirety of "On Sight", and you have an extremely creative hip hop album that still sounds like it was recorded yesterday, over a decade later. This is something only an insane egomaniac with a god complex could create, and it somehow works. An album where an asshole raps about how awesome he is and how much sex he has while the sounds of a pressure washer play in the background would be a complete trainwreck in the hands of anybody else. How does he do it. Again, fuck this guy. My only real gripe was that there was so much autotune on some songs that it sounded like listening to Microsoft Sam. Maybe it's meant to add to the futuristic vibe in a weird way? Sounds pretty kitschy. 5/5. Fuck this guy though.

I tried to separate the art from the artist in college dropout, but there’s no need here. The art and the artist are both awful. I really hope there isn’t more Kanye on this list.

This was the last album from Kanye that I really dug, and even with everything that has happened with him since - artistically, personally, politically - it remains a bracing and thrilling record.

Unpopular opinion, but this may actually be Kanye's best album. I don't mean to disrespect My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (banger of an album), but it has a couple of filler songs that do not improve the listening experience. It still has the all-time best Kanye songs though. Returning to Yeezus, I think it actually encapsulates both the MBDTF highs while showing the best bits of Kanye's future albums (which have amazing songs, but are lesser albums).

Always been a weird one for me. I don’t really fw like half of these songs. But the ones I like I really like. Thought about giving it a 3 but I think that’s me comparing to other Kanye. When I’m comparing it to everything else it’s clearly a 4. 🔥: Hold my liquor, blood on the leaves, bound 2, guilt trip(mainly outro)

The industrial sound of the album is interesting. Some of the samples are a bit cliche. The lyrics are occasionally poignant, but I think this is around the time he lost his mind. So some of the "genius" attributed to this album is closer to "madness".

Some good songs like bound 2 and black skinhead, but i cant dig with the overt graphic sexual references and himself calling himself king and god it just sounds corny and lame. Embarassed for some of the collaborators on these songs. 3 stars cause the production and samples/beats are so damn good.

I think the best way to define Kanye's career is to split it up by which political faction embraces him. This feels like an album of transition. He's talking about everything from new age slavery to the new globalist world order. It's weird to go back and listen to this and know everything that's about to happen to him and America in the following decade. The music itself feels like the cross of narcissistic musings of an egotistical maniac and cutting social critiques of a broken society. A dark album that serves as a dark omen of what's to come. Throw is some absolute slappers and you have a very prolific album.

The album that we never asked for, but needed ... futuristic even to this day. So interesting to compare the minimalistic production here to the maximalism of MBDTF - you can really hear the influence Rick Rubin had on this album. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but boy does it really click when it does. (should mention I don't condone anything this man says, but think it's important for this exercise to judge the art independently of the artist)

"I bet it'll sell even if I put out some weird shit" - Kanye I feel like this album was the first major hint on where Ye was headed mentally.

2/7/24. Even after listening again years later, I think this is a big step down from Kanye's work before this one. The production is good, but believe it's a bit abrasive and a little all over the place. Still a couple songs I'll revisit like Black Skinhead and Blood On The Leaves.

Felt like just listening to this I'm supporting his narcissism. There's a few lyrics on this which will live rent free in my head. "I'd rather be a leader than a follower, a dick than a swallower" for example

Manages to be abrasive and heavy, while sounding thin with no richness of sound. With the exception of Black Skinhead it is devoid of bangers. Some of the worst lyrics and melodies I have heard on this list.

Wow, this album goes hard. The sampling Kanye uses is next level but the songs I love are really the best ones on the album. I think he must have been pretty horny when he made this because it's all about pussy for many of the filler songs. Still a great 4+ album but not one I'd want to buy.

The most problematic of all problematic geniuses. Maybe not actually. He never killed anyone, and while it must have been awful for Kim kardashian, as far as I know he never intentionally abused her. But behind a production desk he was untouchable. This ain’t the album I’d have picked - gold digger is way too great of a problematic track - as is heartbreaker. But man when he’s on fire he burns.

Sometimes you just get tired of constantly hearing : bitches, pussy, titties. I really like Frank Ocean but even he couldn’t save New Slaves for me - I’d rather be a dick than a swallower? Very clever, but Kanye has gone on to prove that he’s a total dick. Musically, this is very inventive. I just can’t take the bullshit lyrics.

Kanye. What to say? I believe he is a true artist, and a fearless one. He absolutely does not believe in censoring his true thoughts, but, wow that is ugly. his willingness to be unlikable extends way beyond provocative trolling, and I believe is a clear representation of his thoughts. And his success has meant that he hasn't felt the need to moderate his expression at all. true artistic freedom! And this is what that looks like; ugly sexism, rampant egotism, and anger (some of it righteous, much of it unfocussed). While I often debate whether the art can justify the artist, Kanye deliberately makes no distinction. And this album was just the beginning. Since then, he has spiraled down into MAGA-craziness, antisemitism, and bonkers behaviour. It's cost him a lot, and I fear he is nearly at the point of flushing his career completely down the toilet (although I have found think pieces extending back earlier than this album that ask the same question about 'How much further can he go?" Let me put it this way, if I read a headline tomorrow that Kayne had murdered someone, I wouldn't be surprised.) I think, for me, he has just gone too far. I admire elements of his production skills (although this record is deliberately difficult to listen to), but, frankly, he is that great of a rapper. Love his first four or five albums (not represented on this list, I notice), but this is the album where he has gone too far for me.

Every morning for the last six weeks I’ve woken up with pain in my neck, hips, back, shoulders and chest. Muscular, y’know? I’ve recently bought a standing desk for work so it might be that, but to try and get rid of it I’ve started yoga and today bought a new memory foam mattress. I’m 45 so I’m at the age where keeping fit while working from home is tough but I’m determined to give it a go. Fuck Kanye, fuck his music.

One of Kanye's most experimental albums, and it was a great attempt at adding in a distorted, grungy attitude to his typical work. Definitely not the Kanye albums I love ("I miss the old Kanye") but something that is different and fun. 4/5 or 85/100

Setting aside my thoughts on the artist, the one thing you can't deny about Kanye's work is the exceptional production level. Almost every sound is carefully chosen and placed to set the atmosphere. It's compact and flows well; very few moments feel out of place or unnecessary. I say \"almost\" and \"very few\" because the autotune in \"Blood On The Leaves\" is a choice. A bad one. The only track I would skip if I were to listen again. I have never been much of a rap fan--even after (or maybe because of) exposure to countless rap playlists at college parties in the mid-2010's--but even I can tell Kanye has elite flow. It's a real shame he's deplorable as a human being, because he'd be one of a short list of modern rappers that I actually want to listen to. Highlights: Black Skinhead, I Am A God A reluctant 4.

I've listened to this album and it's not that I hated it, I just heavily disliked it so with great pleasure, this is my first 1 star rating here. I also can't stand Kanye, the man disgusts me and in this case I won't even try to separate 'the artist' from his 'art'.

Didn't mind some of the beats but no, not for me.

It makes me so sad to listen to this knowing what was coming in just a few years for Kanye. This album is a brilliant autobiography of the horror and wonder of becoming famous in America as a Black man, you’d never imagine the man who wrote this would be deep in the pocket of conservative white America less than five years later. I guess this album combined with that downfall gives a pretty complete picture of what money and fame will do to you over time.

I wish I could hate more of Kanye's music, but this album is a fucking blast.

As a person, I can't stand Kanye West. As a genre, I'm not a fan of hip hop, but I can appreciate it in moderate doses. As shitty a person as Kanye West may be, this album is on the better side of the spectrum when it comes to hip hop. I don't pay attention to lyrics in music, so while the bits I picked up were idiotic, that is irrelevant to me. If I want lyrics, I'll read poetry. That's probably why I'm lukewarm on hip hop as a genre. Anyway, this isn't bad.

In my opinion, the last truly groundbreaking album by one of the worst guys in the industry. There are some great tracks on here and it helped usher in that wave of experimental hip-hop production to more mainstream acts and listeners, but is inconsistent as hell (I’m In It is my least favourite Kanye song by some way) and, where on MBDTF he seemed self-aware in places, on Yeezus he just comes across as an ass

I'm surprised, I didn't know that Kanye actually recorded a good album? I honestly thought he is just a celebrity that raps as a side hustle, or something like that, but this record might have change that opinion. Really interesting and unique compositions, something that I haven't heard before, with addition of a really solid flow and lyrics by Kanye create a great atmosphere. Addition of few covers/borrowed melodies it makes the whole experience even better. Very positive surprise, I will be happy to listen to his older albums more often now. Yeezus will get 4/5 at the moment, but i will definitely revisit it sooner rather than later and maybe I will change my mind. One of the better hip hop albums on this list so far.

This was not good

Fuck this, I'm overlooking the 2-3 songs that sound good and giving this the lowest possible score because the man is a grotesque cunt who doesn't deserve attention. We've had a lot of much older albums in the genre where we excuse some of the content for being in less enlightened times. No way does he get the pass here, especially for the fact it's in every fucking song. Also probably the tipping point for him becoming a galactic self-obsessed arsehole.

Enjoyed this, have had it on a few times today. Some callbacks to his older stuff, some good sampling (though production is a bit more aggressive and a bit less theatrical than on other Kanye records that I've listened to). No standout hits really on this one, but it flows pretty well. Wish he'd dial back on the autotune a little bit, works better when it's marginally more subtle than it is here. But, overall, it's a really tight album, a good 40 minutes without any real filler which (as we've seen plenty of) most hip hop artists seem to struggle with 4/5.

I love Kanye’s early albums and would list Late Registration among my favorite hip-hop albums. But since his decline into…whatever he is now, I’ve tried to avoid Kanye West. There’s not a single step he’s taken that I haven’t found disgusting. Marrying a Kardashian. His comical stint as an evangelical musician. Rise to MAGA superstardom. It’s fair to say that he is my least favorite celebrity. But I don’t know another public figure whose descent has been so widely documented through pervasive media presence, and maybe I shouldn’t hold that against him. But my view of him as an human no doubt affects my view of him as an artist. I thought Nicki Minaj was the best thing about My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and that is supposedly a great album? Is he a genius? Is this album great? Is it as great an album as Kanye West is an asshole? Does it matter? Anyway - for all of the people who have been classified as geniuses and whose lights have faded too soon, I don’t know why this guy keeps hanging around like a barnacle. It’s a pretty good album, but I don’t like that Kanye West made .003 cents while I listened to it.

Another recommended album from Kanye broke my listening habits for a while. I took a break from listening to recommendations from 1001 albums for four solidweeks to build up enough stamina to get through this album. Sonically, there are some electronic sounds and beats that can draw in my attention for a minute, but I can't get past the content. I don't want to listen to the lyrics and I could never repeat them. The album falls firmly in the 1 star range. I do NOT want to listen to this album ever again, and I wish I had NEVER listened to the album in the first place. I've got better things to do with my time. Yeesh(us).

Two Kanye albums in a row! How lucky am I... according to many reviewers on this site I'm not so lucky. I honestly like Kanye, and I can easily separate the art from the artist. He's no genius or god or whatever, but he makes good music. This record is a turning point in his discography. Harsher production, angrier delivery; a far cry from his previous release (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). Some REALLY good tracks on here, but also some lesser ones. I also always found it funny how Kanye constantly addresses racial/social problems in his songs while simultaneously degrading women (primarily black women). Get it together dude.

Realized it’s likely been 10 years since I heard the album in full. I do really like it, a good companion piece to Dark Twisted Fantasy. Quick and angry.

Great album. Super creative both musically and lyrically. It's definitely my favorite of Ye's. Now can we make sure he's getting therapy and/or medication, please?

Interessante, ambitionierte (elektronische) Ansätze irgendwo zwischen Genie und Wahnsinn. Ist mir aber schon zuviel Ego-Trip auf dem Teil.

I’ve never really understood why Kanye is so revered. I quite liked that poopy scoopy song he did, but otherwise there hasn’t really been anything that has interested me. I really don’t understand what I’m missing, but listening to this will at least broaden my horizons. Songs I already knew: Bound Favourites: Hold My Liquor I continue to really got see the fuss for Ye. Bound made my laugh because it’s so ridiculous (and also reminded me of the Seth Rogen and James Franco version). Hold My Liquor felt like a genuinely good song, but it was unfortunately the sole instance of anything enjoyable to me. I suppose I’ll continue on in life feeling like Kanye isn’t for me, which I’m fine with as he seems to be a not-very-nice person.

Some of the beats weren’t bad but the lyrics were horrible. So misogynistic and vulgar and honestly basic with repeated rhymes. Not very creative or much talent in my opinion

"Yeezus" is the sixth studio album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It is considered his most experimental and sonically abrasive album incorporating industrial, acid house, electronic, punk and Chicago drill. Similar to his previous album, he worked with a number of artists and collaborators on production including Mike Dean, Daft Punk, Noah Goldstein. Arca, Hudson Mohawke and Travis Scott. There were also a number of guest vocalists (Justin Vernon, Chief Keef, Kid Cudi, Assassin and Charlie Wilson). The album had widespread critical acclaim and, commercially, hit #1 in the US and UK. "On Sight" opens up with with electronic sounds including lasers. It goes to an electronic beat. Kanye rapping. This is different. "Black Skinhead" keeps the electronic theme but this is more industrial and minimalist. Kanye has an anxious tone as he raps about racial tensions and his crumbling state. In "I Am God " Kanye is called Yeesus by Jesus. This is desolate. A choir comes in at the end to cheer things up. The tone changes somewhat in the second half. "Blood on the Leaves" starts out more of a ballad. The music then starts to build tension. A sampling of Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit" is a brilliantly used as almost background vocals. Kanye uses the vocoder. This is very dramatic. The best song on the album. The closer "Bound 2" switches to soul as they repetitively sample "Bound" by the Ponderosa Twins Plus One and "Sweet Nothin's" by Brenda Lee. Kanye rapping in a pretty straight-forward way. The production of this album does make it abrasive and desolate. Kanye's vocals are dramatic and paranoid. I think he got what he was aiming for. I really started to appreciate the details on multiple listens. This is a very good album. And on the positive side, the album is only 40 minutes long with songs in the three to six-minute range. There is not a lot of filler. Recommended if just to listen to "Blood on the Leaves" if you haven't heard it already.

His ego is at its height here, and that’s saying something. His decision to go for a more industrial style on this album is respectful, and done very tastefully and also brought a lot of light to one of hip-hop’s most underrated sub-genres. The production is obviously immaculate. Lyrics are funny, mostly in the laughable sense. Some solid bops. Definitely enjoyed it. 4/5

The first half of this album is feral egoism; works for the gym. However the second half doesn't quite have the same energy.

Kanye’s ego coming through strong on this one. Some nice production throughout, always good to hear JV on a Kayne track. But it almost feels satirical, the fact that it isn’t makes it hard to get past.

Sounds of the bleak and deranged future

Ik ken Black Skinhead, I'm In It en Bound 2. Desondanks heb ik dit album nog nooit geluisterd omdat ik een beetje een hekel heb aan het schreeuwende personage Kanye dat gevormd is in de jaren na z'n debuutalbum en steeds extremer werd. Simpel gezegd had ik verwacht dat ik dit album een beetje kut zou vinden. Ik had het mis. Meteen zodra je het aanzet weet je dat je een knettergek album te pakken hebt. Bij de openingstrack (waar de hand van Daft Punk goed te horen is) gaat de trein meteen van 0 tot 200 om voorlopig niet meer te stoppen met denderen. Wat ziek. 'Black Skinhead' voelt wat minder extreem, maar dat is misschien omdat ik die inmiddels vaak gehoord heb. Daarna slaat de gekte weer toe met gabber-achtige, industriële fabriekbeats. Ook bij het wat rustigere 'Hold My Liquor' hoor je toch dat wat paniekerige, alarmerende geluid terug. Nina Simone komt even meedoen bij 'Blood on the Leaves'. 'Guilt Trip' is Astro World 5 jaar voor Astro World uitkwam. Leuk man. Bepaalde tracks werken ook eigenlijk niet als je ze als losse track in een playlist zou zetten, maar binnen het album werken ze wel. Tof is dat. De teksten ("Eating Asian pussy, all I need was sweet and sour sauce") laat ik maar gewoon een beetje over me heen komen. Ik ben vooral heel erg druk met alles er omheen. The exact same vocal style/intonation/inflection in every track is extremely boring and unimaginative. There were no musical hooks here either. This guy is the equivalent of a bowel movement with an ego and a clothing line. How many stars is less than zero? Yeezus wept.

Is it a hip-hop record or a Marvel movie? Whichever, it sounds like one giant kitchen-sink fantasy. There’s a lot going on here – musically, production-wise, and in the protagonists’ ego – so one assumes there’s a reason the kids are into it. One’s not schooled enough to delineate the ironic posturing from the straight-up bluster but not sure how such insight would change one’s assessments anyway. It's too performative and over the top and obviously meant to make an impression, which seems to undercut quite of all the virtuosity and interesting bits (e.g., last half of "Hold My Liquor"). The beats too often play for a bad-horror-movie in effect and the auto-tune is reaching and more annoying than effective. The co-opting of civil rights themes and memes ("Strange Fruit," "free at last" in regards to unbound breasts) may be the most offensive (or offense-adjacent) bit – both aesthetically and morally (Ye certaintly thinks he's earned the right but ... well ... ). “Hurry up with my damn croissants” is the line that saves this from being a 2. And of course Rick Rubin was involved ... of course he was ... and this is definitely a rock star sort of record, but not in a good way.

Best Song: Black Skinhead. The samples and the narrative are the best on the album. Worst Song: I Am A God. Kanye's ego taking over here, and his lack of editing on full display. "Hurry up with my damn croissants" is just never going to hit as hard as he thinks it's going to. Overall: Less cohesive than Kanye's better work, with the main through line (for me) being the overall heavy/noisy production on the album. Everything crunches and screeches and booms, sometimes successfully, but too often not. Lyrically, it's still just Kanye. I don't know. Not his best.

this was my first time listening to an album by kanye west. i can understand the allure, the music is pretty catchy. but the lyrics? he comes across as an angry sex obsessed narcissist. and that’s in EVERY song. case in point: in the song “blood on the leaves”, there is a song with a repetitive sample of nina simone’s rendition of “strange fruit”. “strange fruit” is a very powerful song, yet somehow kanye makes the song about himself and starts rapping about some beef he has with jay-z? it was just weird. also, it seems as if he keeps saying the “n word” and “bitch” just for the sake of saying them. i know some people consider him a genius, but if this is an example to point to for that, count me out. i don’t get it. there’s just no “there” there.

As my first introduction to Ye I discovered a great album. While it's not my usual style I still thoroughly enjoy it

Really enjoy Kanye's earlier albums so I had high hopes. The background tracks are outstanding. The producing was top notch up until the moment that he put lyrics on the beat. At times this is up there with the worst rapping I've heard. I went back and listened to College Dropout to see if it was just me misremembering how good Kanye was. He actually contradicts his own song Jesus Walks with Yeezus. This album's lyrics lack passion and direction and are just another lazy attempt at a cash grab. He literally rhymes the same word 7 or 8 times, how is this considered good?

Have not yet finished the album, but nearly done. How can anyone listen to this without wanting it to end the entire time? The vocals are mostly over-the-top and heavily autotuned, the whole album sounds like an Imagine Dragons type beat, and the bars range from okay? to wtf is this? Not a fan of this album, and honestly not sure how anyone who's listened to other Kanye (or any rap at all tbh) could either.

Industrial hip hop rules

Incredibly intense and dark, almost industrial sounding, hard. Lyrics range from sexist crap to insane and clever. Immaculate performance with great tributes and features. Very good!

This is just all over the place with wild mood swings between terrible noise and some decent, interesting rhymes. I guess this album is not long before Kanye's full meltdown into the Trump world Swamp. It should be a 1 because it is really awful but I'll round up because of my new grading rubric and it had a few good rhymes

He's a good rapper, IMHO. The clarity of the lyrics considering the speed of his voice is really remarkable. Unfortunately, that just means you can really clearly hear all the sexism, self-aggrandisement and so on. I'd say I'm not angry about this one, just disappointed. Wins marks for some great sampling, but couldn't quite rescue it. Maybe it's harsh to look back on this after Ye has gone full nut-nut, as you hear songs like I Am A God and realise that he genuinely means it, rather than appreciating it for (probably) the best song on the record.

I'm nearly 900 albums in at this point and there have been TWO albums that I just could not listen through in their entirety. This is one of them. I tried. I really did. But I only made it about halfway through before the bloated, misogynistic, false-martyr, ego-tirade become so oppressive that I turned it off. Every song is either juvenile in subject matter or delivery... or both. I don't care about your clothes, Ye. I don't care about your dick. I don't care about how much of a genius you think you are. I don't want to hear it and I don't have time for this level of garbage. Grow up, get over yourself, and elevate your game. Kanye's an overrated hack and the industry that enabled his delusions can burn to the ground for all I care. This will be the last time I give him any of my time and attention.

The one point where Ye not looking after his mental health actually resulted in a pretty great album. His last great album before he became an increasingly embarrassing sportswear salesperson who occasionally releases horrible rushed music. It's entertainingly dark and industrial and has a silly sense of humour... until you realise a lot of what felt like jokes here has slowly become his whole person's (HURRY UP WITH MY DAMN CROISSANTS)

Creative and interesting hip hop. I enjoyed three out of the first four songs. Thought “I am god” was terrible. Then after New Slaves this album really fell off. I don’t think an artists art should be judged by their character. Dali was also a narcissist and nazi sympathizer, but I enjoy his work. To me this was not Kanye’s best work, but I do appreciate him taking artistic risks

Now, setting aside the monstrous amount of cunt that Kanye West is, this album was pretty good. It’s no Donda or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but nonetheless it’s an exceptional album full of big beats, big hooks and excellent lyrics. A bit too much misogyny but all hip hop seems to be. Great for what it is, not anything more than a three though.

As so often is the case, it’s hard to put ones personal opinion of an artist aside and just focus on the art. If I think about the great painters, like Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, etc., I don’t often think of their personal lives. They didn’t have social media or the internet in their day, so it was easy, I imagine, to put the art first always. But alas, we live in the era where artists have platforms beyond their art to discharge their personal thoughts and beliefs. With that said, this album is monumental for rap and for popular music in general. Kanye pushes the envelope, he’s an auteur, he takes the turns that no one thinks to take. That’s what makes him special and complicated. This album is special and complicated. It’s dark, it’s thrilling, it’s sexual, it’s humorous (but dark humor). It’s dissonant, but it’s also desirable. It doesn’t conform to anything anyone knew before or after, it’s punk, it’s industrial, it’s audacious, and above all its art of the highest quality.

this is the album where Kanye starts to go crazy (comparing himself to Jesus), but he hasn't gone full crazy yet so the Crazy help to augment the Talent, whereas in his latest projects I'd agree the Crazy is overshadowing the Talent. This album is surprising and jarring but it is amazing how well it works together. On this listen I really loved how I'm In It blended Bon Iver and Jamaican Dancehall, and it comes together beautifully, a testament to Kanye's talent.

Someone needs to tell him that 300 wasn't the Romans... I didn't dislike this as much as the last one. But meh overall. Plus he's just so angry all the time! There were some catchy tunes on this one though. So I would say 2 - 2.5. I'll stick with 2 because fuck Kanye.

Some really good tracks on here - Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves, Guilt Trip. I do appreciate the more industrial sound he goes for on these tracks. Some really stupid decisions on this album too, the screams on I Am a God. Some of the sound effects - very abrasive. You can tell this is when Kanye was starting to really stray from the solid production he was known for, and when his ego went really overboard (some of the lyrics are awful, "Eatin' Asian pussy, all I need was sweet n sour sauce" - CANCELLED). I do feel like I would get into some of the tracks more on subsequent listens, but also with some of the sound effects, random screams, and odd sample choices ("UH-HUH HONEY" on Bound 2) I really don't want to.

I'll be honest I have very little patience for this Ye era. Even before all the anti-Semitic shit became more widely known, as much as I appreciate the production and the blending of genres and musical ideas that go into his tracks, the lyrics and POV are a big turn off for me.

I unironically love Bound 2. This album is such a departure from dark twisted fantasy but it’s refreshing. It’s both sparse and claustrophobic. Blood on the Leaves goes so hard. I can’t quite get to a 5 on it but high high 4.

Hard to separate the man from the art these days. I remember when this was released, and I was in a "hidden" boutique in Boston (really - it was behind a dummy wall of a bodega). I got into an animated conversation with one of the salespeople about whether Yeezus was better Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail. I chose Yeezus. Today I see this as an episode of Chopped where the judges are contestants. He has a basket of odd items (disparate styles) that he throws in the blender and makes something great that never would have occurred to me.

What a massive album. I’ve given it absolutely no time and instead gone in search of the singles when I fancy it. I definitely slept on this one. I think Kanye has a habit of being ahead of his time. A long way ahead. I listen a lot and widely but kanye releases always feel like a miss to me until I go back. I wish I could listen for the moment though and not think about who the man has become (or perhaps always was, it just took me a while to clock it). It’s distracting and it affects the music deeply because so many of his songs pick up issues that he’s revealed himself to be deeply ignorant about, such as New Slaves. I also cringe when I hear Nina. It can feel like a sacrilege the way that he uses her voice. Still, a brilliant album.

For 2013, both the rap and the electronica/industrial aspects are a bit pathetic. The misogyny is rampant, but that kind of comes with the territory. I think there was some valid social commentary somewhere in there, but I could not pay attention to the lyrics because the song was so boring. Maybe I don't understand the point of samples, but if you put a piece of a good song into a bad one, I will just wish I was listening to the good song. I was sad about "Gyöngyhajú lány"; first, Scorpions did their awkward cover, and now this.

Kanye's megalomania is on full display on this album, and it's thoroughly off-putting. It brings to mind some lyrics from Ice Cube's "No Vaseline": "Ayy, yo, Dre, stick to producing." Swap out "Ye" for "Dre" and that sums up my feelings on Kanye. Great producer, okay rapper whose albums provide steadily decreasing enjoyment. I'll round up from 2.5.

Really interesting sounds and textures, but Fuck Kanye

It is impossible to put aside Kanye's recent hate speech and identification as a Nazi and all the rest - it colors lines like "I am a god" in even poorer light. Putting that aside for a moment, sonically one of the stand out things on this album is the minimalism of it. I was impressed by the restraint of even keeping the drums out in many cases, yet it still felt like there was plenty there to keep the songs together. Interesting to hear that Rick Ribin was brought on for just that - for stopping back and being a "reducer" not a "producer" as Kanye said. Also interesting to hear that he was inspired by Le Corbusier, and that he worked with architects in formulating his ideas about the album.

I really like what he's doing musically here, but some of the lyrics are just atrocious, so much so that it completely ruins it for me. I can respect Kanye West - I've given multiple albums of his fives on here, but knowing how things have played out in his life, this just sounds like a man starting to slowly go insane. On "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" that seemed exciting, but this is the dark flipside to that coin, and it makes me kinda sad.

I love the instrumentation here with the distorted minimalist structure. Lyrics and song content though... they suck. Just typical sexual bravado that feels like a complete waste of the sonic strength of the songs. If I didn't understand English I'd say this would be a 4, but alas...

Man. I came into this album thinking I was going to listen to a magnum opus and begrudgingly admit Kanye's talent, but this album was not it for me. The samples and loops were often grating and unpleasant, the rap was alright in spots, and the autotune really has not aged well for me. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had a much better showing in my opinion.

I really wanted to hate this album. Kanye is a horrible person, but I try to listen to the music objectively without clouding my judgement with THE person and their issues. With that being said, Yeezus is a piece of shit, the kind of crap artist's release because they can and gullible people will still buy and praise. This has all the reasons why I can't stand narcissist, Nazi-praising, ego driven lunatics like West. His constant talk of pussy, titties and what's he's going to do with woman and his moronic god complex is summed up in his song, "I Am A God", of course. Not to mention the annoying auto-tune, the ridiculous rap shit he spews, with lyrics which could have been written by a delusional teenage boy. I can't believe I "listened" to the whole thing!

I didn’t care for this at all. Super abrasive. I do wonder what I would have thought if I had heard this album prior to everything that’s happened with Kanye over the last several years, because in a vacuum, I think the content of this album would still make me think Kanye was an aggrieved megalomaniac. 5.0 + I'd mistakenly remembered this record as the odd sibling to "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" but it's 100% a whole-ass album in its own right. Those noisy, glitchy beats on songs like "On Sight" are undeniably awesome, especially when Kanye juxtaposes them with gorgeous vocal samples (e.g. "Strange Fruit" on "Blood On The Leaves"). Bon Iver's melancholic falsetto similarly provides striking contrast on "I'm In It." This is Kanye at his most urgent and propulsive.

He has some ideas and things to say, but there’s little follow-through. The beats are lazy. Even when the raps open with a strong thesis, the rhymes and construction fall flat. Overall, lazy compared to even his least-inspired previous work. He’s better than this.

It’s got all of the elements of a solid Kanye album. The rap is tight and the flow goes hard. The mixing is fantastic and the beats go. I just don’t enjoy the lyrics in this one. Feels like an experiment, half polished. He’s very creative, and he takes chances. The buck stops there. Bound 2 was a banger 4 sure.

Something this list has revealed to me is my surprising tolerance for industrial & noise music, in certain doses. I had no idea Daft Punk was so involved with Yeezus

With the start of "On Sight", we immediately see Kanye go in a completely opposite direction from MBDTF. It's cold, industrial, and abrasive, fueling an angry and manic persona that juxtaposes to the depressed and victim-playing character we saw him play previously. It's a super short album, with 10 tracks over the course of just 40 minutes, and yet each stands out. I never know which direction he goes. His use of samples and production techniques is incredibly harsh and impactful and matches his strong lyrical delivery. Despite how harsh it is, his vocals are clear and smooth, capable of transitioning between all sorts of delivery styles, from plain rapping to singing to screaming. His use of repetition, emphasis, and ridiculous metaphors make certain lines really stand out and leave a greater impression, not only being memorable but also reinforcing his points. Most of his samples are highly distorted and barely coherent, with the notable exceptions being "Blood on the Leaves" (which I was blown away by) and the accessible closer "Bound 2" which - although doesn't fit with the rest of the album - provides a satisfying and easy closer to this mess of an album in a similar way to "Radio 4" on PIL's Metal Box. I was constantly impressed by every track and wasn't sure where he was headed. These tracks really blew me away by which how complex and encapsulating they all were. I'm a huge fan of experimental music, so I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was also a fan of the reoccurring themes (like how he referenced song titles in previous songs), which add to the overall coherency, and these manic themes are even more impactful now knowing how literally insane he is based on recent actions. Even the tracks that didn't leave a huge impression at first grew on me with each listen. "I'm In It" had the lushest soundscape and intense power. "Guilt Trip" had awesome techno-like synths and effects with melancholic lofi vocals and samples that produced a very industrial and hopeless atmosphere. "Send It Up" impressed me with its machine-like and cold sound.

Kanye is clearly quite a disturbed character and some of the brashness of his lyrics worn thin very quickly, but ignoring that here is a collection of innovative tracks, banging beats and catchy hooks. Would be a 5-star if he could have been slightly less of a bell-end

Kanye definitely reached experimental heights with this album, and pulled it off. It's all over the place, but he's a pro at sampling and making wild beats. Though the lyrics are a bit brash throughout. I'm sure that's what he was going for though

This album showcases some truly brilliant production; some rather mediocre rapping; and lyrics so stupid that I felt my IQ ticking down a few points every time I fully tuned in.

It's hard to separate his personality from the music when the lyrics are so cringeworthy and uncomfortable in places. It does still have some nice tracks on here though, blood on the leaves is my favourite.

Yeezus is the sixth album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It received widespread acclaim at release, topping the Billboard 200 chart - as well as some other country's charts, and selling 327,000 copies in the first week. It has been certified double platinum in the US. Kanye experimented with many different genres on this album and favored a minimalist sound during mixing which makes this album his most experimental. Some of the genres this album draws from are: industrial, acid house, electro, punk, and drill, while the overarching genre is hip hop/rap. There is also a long list of artists that collaborated with Kanye on this album. Some providing vocals, while others may have helped with song structure, samples, and/or specific musical elements. Amazingly, Kanye had the entire album revised by producer Rick Rubin and some close collaborators 15 days leading up to its release. A handful of tracks were cut and others were re-recorded or had their music stripped down. Kanye is a perfectionist and this album shows the fruits of his labor. He wanted to break new ground and create something that was a "protest to music". It's still a hip-hop album, but the music sounds like it comes from the distant future. It was a beautiful, dark, twisted, masterpiece (a nod to one of Kanye's previous albums). This album has everything you could ask for from a Kanye West hip-hop album. It was one of - if not - the most acclaimed albums of 2013. Love him or hate him, Kanye West is a master of music and one could even say he is a god.

I remember vividly this was the album where I left Kanye. Maybe I shouldn't have been willing to put up with his bullshit to this point. But this album sucked. AND sucked. This record actually makes me feel like a bad person.

All the colours of the rainbow listening to this one. One minute I was uninterested, the next I hated it, the next it was decent, then next I was really loving the music, the next I remember what a c*nt he is (mental issues aside), the next I thought it was a great. So middle of the road then.

Hate Kanye but this was one of the best of its time...

I have to a knowledge the artistry and production. Many songs made me feel uncomfortable, which makes an album stand out.

“My mind moves like a Tron bike, pop a wheelie on the zeitgeist” Every track sounds so good, production and construction. And he has flashes of lyrical brilliance and interesting commentary. But his words and personality are inseparable from the music and they’re mostly insufferable.

It seems many reviews are skewed by recent behavior of Kanye. I felt then (and now) that this was some of Kanye's best work. The minimalist/industrial vibes work well with the incredible samples (typical of Kanye). He makes some good social commentary hidden between some misogyny. Torn but I think it just squeaks by with a 4.

Lost his marbles

I'm not going to listen to this album and would rate it a 0 if I could.

This is a tough one. I generally try to separate the art from the artist, but Kanye has gone from just being an insufferable shitheel to being someone with absolutely vile views. I used to listen to him, but I try to avoid it all costs now. But...this album is still kind of good. The beats on songs like "Black Skinhead" and "New Slaves" still kind of slap. And one thing is for sure: "in a French-ass restaurant, hurry up with my damn croissants!" will always be a legendary line. I'm struggling between giving this 4 stars, or knocking it back to 3 based solely on how extravagantly Kanye has managed to ruin his legacy. But at the end of the day, I will try to separate Yeezus from the piece of shit that is Kanye West.

I was always a big fan of this album. Kanye's last great work before his descent into madness.

Some interesting beats, some terrible lyrics with even worse delivery. The chorus on 'Hold My Liquor' is one of the most embarrassing things I've heard. If Ye actually was a genius, he'd get someone else to do the rapping.

Influencing, exploring , new age music

The last interesting album that Kanye made bridging the gap before what he had done and a futuristic sound we haven't quite caught up with. The signs of his mental issues are starting to show.

4.5/5. He’s not a good person and has lots of issues but to separate the art from the artist, it’s a very special album and I love the minimalistic approach. His sampling is so unique and creative, totally dig the industrial influence too. This Kanye era was something else before he sadly lost his mind.

Sorry not my cup of tea

Some great production, but the lyrics of a spoilt toddler

I was at a listening streaming not so long ago and it got to my mind that this was the Kanye record that had better aged. I guess I was thinking about its power and rawness, but also, the sacrilege is the same as it was back when it came and has not whined nor soured down like some other of his records/statements. I do not know what Nina would think about her appearance on this, but it’s outrageous and brilliant nevertheless. Damn there was a time when Kanye could take that extra step beyond the line and not burn like he surely should have. Those days are gone but the music does indeed linger with strength and power.

Originally the album already was bad but I would have given it 2.5 stars for the content. However that specific content (Black Skinhead & New Slaves) didn't age. Kanye became the type of person he's criticising on this album. With that the only good part of this album went out the window

I've been cold turkey on Ye since, oh, 2018 or so; the Hitler apologism and emotional abuse of his ex is pretty unforgivable. But over the last week or two I've been a little hungry for something from Mr. West. This led me to a relisten of Life of Pablo, which I still find incredibly uneven, even if there are high highs (weirdly enough, the conversation on last.fm indicates many people consider Pablo to be his absolute peak. I'm not seeing it). Anyway, Lou Reed was right about this one.
