Pretty fucking good

I knew War Pigs, Paranoid, & Iron Man going in. I don't have a ton of experience with metal, so the rest was new to me. Not going into my main rotation, but I can appreciate it.

Thumping and bumping all through the night. Incredible album.

Always loved this album. Paranoid is an underrated all time song.

This album, while almost 30 years old when I was in high school, takes me back there. We listened to it a lot during some of my sports practices, so it's nostalgic there. It's not quite perfect, but it's pretty darn close.

War Dogs is such a great song. I also like Paranoid and Iron Man, but not sure if I've heard the rest of the album before. Musically; this is a great album, I probably would prefer listening to this album without Ozzy singing, and just enjoy the music.

Bit rough around the edges but it adds to the emotion and heaviness of the whole thing - This album has so many classics, war pigs, paranoid, iron man - Ozzy’s vocals are super strong here, interesting use of tremolo and vocal effects throughout Fav - War pigs - Classic heavy riffs, ozzy sounds great - Big boomy drums least fav - hand of doom - I like the bassline and quiet loud contrast, great guitar work but the song as a whole doesn’t excite me 4/5

Couple big tunes couple duds.

Another classic. Black Sabbaths “Paranoid” was another benchmark in history for music. Im not the biggest fan of metal, but this is an exception. Fr shoutout Black Sabbath. Favorite tracks: Paranoid, Iron Man, and I liked Hand of Doom & Jack the Stripper / Fairies Wear Boots more than I used to.

Belting - 3 or 4 total bangers here, and not much is better than Warpigs

The highs of Paranoid have something of the curse of familiarity, initial heaviness giving way to hits which sometimes get a little silly. But silly is hardly a bad way to be, and that Black Sabbath register worked its magic on me quietly. No duds here, just solid tunes. The band trades experimentation for stability and still rocks.

This was cool when I was 15 and obviously pretty groundbreaking for its time. It holds up relatively well, which is pretty impressive.

Amazing guitar riffs and Ozzy's vocals are just fantastic

I liked this a lot more than expected

Despite not liking Metal as a genre, I do love a bit of Sabbath. They did it first, and best. Iy’s easy to forget that tis album was released in 1970. Paranoid is a fantastic tune, but I found my attention wandering after the first half of this album. War Pigs is great too, so maybe I just love the ‘hits’? Still a great album though.

As much as I love "Iron Man" and "Paranoid", "Planet Caravan" is now my favorite song off this album.

This is the best Black Sabbath album on the list. I had not heard this whole album in its entirety before. Several of the songs are classics and are great. Although War Pigs does not need to be 7 minutes long. Paranoid is the best song on the album.

The first four songs were legendary. The other half of the album was decent. Ozzy Osbourne is the man.

Kicking things off with an album I've heard countless times and never tire of. It's like the algorithm KNOWS ME. Fantastic album and has some of my favourite Sabbath songs on it. War Pigs never ceases to get me into a rockin' good mood. Same for Paranoid. Planet Caravan is simply haunting. And such a change in mood and groove from the previous tracks. Iron Man always makes me think about The Road Warriors because in the early days of their wrestling career that was their walking to the ring music. Love the bluesy groove to Hand of Doom.

Very good, definitely revolutionary for its time and greatly influential for many years to come. For me it's not exactly the sound I'm actively looking for these days. In the past I liked it way more than now, but tastes change and evolve so I'm not blaming the album for suddenly getting worse or anything like that.

Solid album and always a great listen.

Classic Black Sabbath. Surprised with grooviness of the song Planet Caravan.

It holds up amazingly well: they really were on the leading edge of something new and all the elements are harmonized in service of that sound and sensibility. There is a little too much muddy recording and sometimes kind of dumb lyrics (though they are mostly pretty good and well ahead of most of their genre ilk) for a perfect score, but it’s a great album.

An all time fav! More than four stars but not quite five

What is there to say about this album that hasn't been said a million times? Black Sabbath paved a road forward for heavy metal with this 1970 album. It would become a blueprint for successful heavy metal music for decades to come. The album has some of the most amazing and memorable riffs to ever grace music, and at least THREE songs from this album (War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man) have stood the test of time and are acknowledged as among the best heavy metal songs ever, even all these decades later. Every other song on this album, while not all as commercially appealing to the general public, serve the same level of amazing quality metal and offer a blueprint of success for the genre going forward. This album is iconic. This album is the definition of legacy.

very good start to finish

Solid album by Black Sabbath. To think that this came out in 1970 is pretty crazy. The landscape of music was not ready for what Black Sabbath contributed at that time. Really changing the rock genre towards something more hardcore. This album is probably their best with great riffs and eerie lyrics and sounds. Plus some of their most popular hits. 7.7/10

Solid album with some undeniable classics!

War Pigs to Electric Funeral, all bangers. After that I feel like it loses steam. The vocals aren’t my favorite, but sometimes they work well.

This turns out to be a really good album. Obviously some classics like War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man; but even ones I don't know like Electric Funeral and Jack the Stripper (dumb name) are pretty rad.

A musty, dark and rather crabbit little album - if you forget that it's also casually helping to invent heavy metal in the first place. The interplay between Ward's impressionistic drumming and Butler's bass playing is beautiful. Yes, Iommi provided the huge riffs ('Iron Man' pretty much kick-starting the entire doom metal genre) but it was the boys in the rhythm section who ensured Sabbath's sound remained so idiosyncratic. Lovely stuff!

Absolutely ace! A heavier, more fun version of Led Zep with a slightly less screechy vocal, but far more political lyrics. Rightly a classic with surprising laid back jazzy song as well. Great!

OOGH. Another childhood staple. Grew up on this one. This album is definitely one of the best in the style. Possibly THE best in the style. The style happens to not be my ALL TIME FAVORITE THING EVER IN THE WORLD. I really want to give this 5 stars but I don’t knowwwwww. I don’t feel blown away by it. I just don’t. It really is perfect. I have 0 complaints. But I just don’t feel blown away by how good it is. If I could play like any of these people I’d trade in the skin on my face. I’m sorry but 4. A really high 4. Maybe if I smoked. Idk. I’m sorry.

It's a seminal and influential album that misses the 5 stars for me because it meanders off halfway through but War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man and Fairies Wear Boots are as good as it gets.

Yeah, this is excellent. 4/5 for me. Opening track is really fun, then Paranoid is a classic. Planet Caravan (Track 3) is really odd - feels completely out of place on the album and isn't interesting at all in its own right for me. Back to form on Iron Man, then a couple of good but not great songs before it perks up again at the end. Only critique of the album as a whole is that the songs drag a little bit, could maybe do with shaving 30 seconds to a minute off a few of them. Paranoid really leaves you wanting more, but some of the others go on a bit too long.

Classic rock is classic.

A lot less heavy than I thought it would be. I wasn't aware of the non-hook sections of this album and was way more musical than I was expecting. Ozzy was charismatic and def a force in this band, but I would classify him as musically-inclined and not necessarily a musician. "Hand of Doom" that intro made me think I had cut to a diff album

Total classic.

'Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses'... what a kick-off! This is one of those albums that transcends whether I normally like that kind of music, it's so good. One of the, if not The, greatest metal albums of all time I'm sure. My top pick is 'War Pigs' but I also enjoyed 'Paranoid' and 'Fairies Wear Boots'. Another time I wish this a ten star scale as this is really a 9.

Wow! Trip down memory lane!

I heard this pretty recently, so I don't even need to hear this to know how much I like it. Classic album, although I do prefer their self-titled debut more. Solid 4 for me.

Side 1 is excellent - Side 2 lets it down a little. But overall a great album.

Good 70’s rock

War Pigs is my favorite Sabbath song, I think. This record is excellent. The drums sound so dead. The fuzzed out guitars. Ozzy's vocals are as strong as they'd ever be. I'll always listen to this record. It's heavy but also sort of mellow. I wonder if these guys smoked week? Heh.

This has to be the best Sabbath album, right? War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man - all the songs that drunk bikers karaoke to. I actually do like this album, but I'm not sure why. I think I was surprised by the simplicity of it. It hits you hard, but it's also really under-produced and stripped down. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals - that's it. No special effects - just point a microphone and go. There's something respectable about that. I'm not sure if this is a "hard 4" - but I gave their last album a 3 and this one is definitely superior.

Dope album!! Of course the classics are great but the other 5 songs are still great. Rat Salad might be the exception, but it’s almost like an instrumental interlude. Big fan of this. 8/10

Listening to their music was a simple act of collective ritual that required no education. But unlike Beatles fans (who became pop singers at best), the teenagers who identified with the "lightness" of Black Sabbath's music were the very ones who would form rock bands: Black Sabbath spread an alien virus, the heavy metal virus. When I was in Middle School, Ozzy was legend. All the stories about biting bats heads off on stage, and his weird performance style were the main attraction. His music I feel took a backseat in the conversations because we were kids and didn't really understand. Now, I am happy to revisit this album. War Pigs is incredible. What a song. The guitar riffs are so awesome, Ozzy sounds great. Paranoid is a classic. Again, it shreds, it rocks, and it is iconic. And Iron Man, of course more iconic riffs and awesome rocking. What an album! And the whole thing clocks in at 42 minutes. Beautiful.

I really enjoyed a lot of this album. Didn't really consider myself a black sabbath guy, but they impressed me.

Classic album - lots of hits

J'ai reçu ce matin au réveil un appel de Robert qui voulait savoir pourquoi j'avais un retard de huit critiques sur le générateur. J'ai tenté de bafouiller quelques excuses mais Robert n'en a pas du tout été convaincu. Résultat des courses, je dispose d'un délai d'une semaine pour toutes les rédiger. Dans le cas contraire, Norbert Episode sera chargé de me rendre une nouvelle visite faisant suite à celle de la semaine dernière (cf critique d'Animal Collective). Un très bon album de Black Sabbath à part ça.

Une fois n'est pas coutume, un des albums les mieux notés du générateur tient enfin son rang. Ce qui n'est pas le cas de mon camarade d'écoute robtenaillère, qui compte une fois de plus de multiples reviews de retard. Après son déclassement de bras droit de Robert à simple auditeur générateurien (a mon profit, puisque je le rapelle je suis le nouveau bras droit de Robert), rob multiplie les bavures. Un long chemin de croix, qui seul dieu (Robert, dont je suis le bras droit) sait où cela le menera.

Great Classic Metal Riffs

Hmmm… Have I discovered a little metal head living inside my skin??? I suppose I am still exploring this possibility, but I did find this album quite enjoyable. And, I was told there would be more Satan.

I wasn’t looking forward to a Black Sabbath album. Not really what I typically think of as music I would listen to. But I’m willing to listen to all of these albums once… and I do know the song “Iron Man”. Not my favorite song, but we’ll see. I started the album and realized I did know the first song “War Pigs”. Looking at the lyrics, I found I kind of liked it. Then “Paranoid” came on and I realized I not only know the song, I really like the song! “Planet Caravan” was new to me, but I the moody description sailing through space under the watchful eyes of the war god Mars was a surprisingly tender song. When “Iron Man” started, I started feeling my fingers moving and suddenly realized where I know all these songs from. Several years ago I played a lot of Guitar Hero with my friends and had played along to these songs often… Raised in the 70s and 80s, “Electric Funeral” resonated with its horrific vision of atomic destruction. As a bonus, I think it ends with some just punishment for the wicked. “Hand of Doom” is a surprisingly sultry depiction of war leading to drug addiction. That was a theme on one of the songs on the John Prine album I just listened to as part of this project. How cool is it that doing this 1001 project I can compare/contrast these two artists?! Black Sabbath presents a much more graphic depiction of the subject well-suited to the hard, ominous music they make. “Rat Salad” was a groovy 70s metal instrumental with a prominent drum solo (not my favorite thing in music), but I liked it well enough since it was pretty concise. A lot of bands indulge a little too much in their solos to stay interesting on a recording. I appreciated Black Sabbath keeping this one tight. “Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots” had some good 70s metal to wrap things up. The singer is a bit obsessed with the fairy in boots, and I’m not exactly clear on what the singer is observing. Although maybe the doctor’s diagnosis at the end explains things? I’m glad I listened to this album, and I will listen to them again, although maybe not in one sitting like this. Black Sabbath still isn’t squarely my thing, but I’m more than happy to dabble in their music now and again.

Remember when I heard i first time. I was fifteen years and was surprised over the "new sound". It's a very good record 👍

I'm not a huge Black Sabbath fan, but there's no denying the riffs and the power of their early albums. They were definitely pioneers of heavy metal. 4 stars.

How have I never listened to this whole album before? Going with 4 but I may regret not setting it as a 5.

Much closer to getting top marks than I expected. Busy boys to follow up with another album the same year as their debut. A couple of massive tracks on there and interesting jazzy stuff as well.

great album great songs, sometimes the flow of the lyrics is a bit lacking

Gosh darn it I'm gonna slap a four on it and be done with it. I'll be honest I had low low expectations here. Never had any interest in listening to these bozos, but it turns out there's nothing bozoic about it. The instrumental tracks of Planet Caravan and Rat Salad (lovely name) are really enjoyable (barring the awfully long drum solo in Rat Salad (lovely name)). As much as it makes me cringe slightly hearing the guitar riffs to Paranoid and Iron Man, on this occasion I feel like applauding them for writing something so catchy and simple. Really enjoyed a lot of the more intricate guitar, especially on War Pigs. I guess I feel like it's pretty intriguing stuff but I wouldn't have it on my living room wall ya know.

Funny that music that seemed heavy and subversive in the 70s does not today. Except that whole bat thing... seems like a misguided idea in the wake of covid. A bit slow for me, but still like it a lot. High 3/low 4 Iron Man is overplayed War Pigs is great

Another eye roll album where I am happy to be proved wrong. Heavy. Bluesy. Dark lyrics. Melodic. 4/5. Maybe slightly higher because of how timeless and influential it feels.

Man, this is better than I remembered. The melodies are thick, heavy and robust, basically the beginnings of doom metal I think? Ozzy's voice is mildly annoying, but I think that's because I'm hearing him saying "Sharon, where are me keys Sharon?". The young Ozzy actually had a pretty good voice and it suits the music. I like the socio-political leaning lyrics. It's a good album. 4*

They'd benefit from not standing at the other end of a concrete hallway from the microphone. The tracks they are in the same room as the mic for are great.

What an album! Ozzy and the boys kill it here with 3 of their--and perhaps the genre's--most recognized songs occupying the A-side. Still undecided on "Planet Caravan", it works as an intermission of sorts between 3 face melting classics, but it also feels like a flat tire on an otherwise peerless record. Also, while I reserve the right to change my opinion, I currently love the camp album cover as there's nothing wrong with bringing some humour to a really self-serious genre. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.5)

Was not happy when this came up as the first album on this. but nah this album is pretty incredible it deserves the legend status. They weren't just "The first heavy metal band", they created so many elements of it on this one album. The sparse heavy riffs, the quiet/loud dynamic, the sludgy riffs, "paranoids" very punk rocky, "Planet Caravan" is basically an Alice In Chains song lmao. Def some real shit here, better listen then I expected.

Classic rock/metal album, really recommend listening to at least everything before fairies wear boots. I feel like there is probably a reason behind fairies wear boots being there, but without it I feel like it comes off a little pretentious -- "here, listen to the album again but slightly different..."

Almost 5 stars just for iron man

Eyyyy it's the other good Brummie group. I think we've had all three of them now. This is a very good album, slower tempo but doesn't sacrifice intensity.

A true example of an album before it’s time. So much heavy fuzzy distortion used to full effect in Iron Man & War Pigs for example. Doom metal is a genre used so much these days but this album is where it all started. 4 Stars!

I've never been a Black Sabbath fan, but when listening to this album I can understand the appeal. This is a pretty seminal recording of early heavy metal with some pretty kick ass tracks that stand up well 50 yrs later. I finally know what those metal heads were going on about now.

Great guitar! Some classic songs like Iron Man and Paranoid. The vocals match the vibe, normally would find this kind of singing a bit grating to the ears, but it really works.

Pretty good, I remember listening to this about 10 years ago and it was definitely unlike anything I had heard before. Listening to it again in 2021, it still holds up but doesn't really sit well with me since I'm not a huge metal fan.

I wrote a review for this, but it was lost :/ In summary, Planet Caravan stands out the most to me. Paranoid was also pretty good, but otherwise the sound was kind of bland.

I liked this more than I thought I would, but the vocals are so wholesome and so silly.

I really didn't want to listen to this album -- too much metal! Don't want to listen to any of it! But I had forgotten that Paranoid is a very good song. Not sure that I ever knew what it's title was. So, that's something. Still -- no thank you.

I like this but I think they refine their sound over the next few. It's cool to hear this stuff and it's basically heavy nasty blues rock, not something I'd necessarily have expected when you see how this was rejected by critics at the time

2.5 - Some iconic songs, but the rest is underwhelming.

Starts out with a couple great bangers, mixes into a song I would never have guessed was by Black Sabbath, and then songs I associate more with them/their style (that are a good example of why, while they do have some stuff I enjoy, I wouldn't necessarily say I like the band). Wouldn't listen to the full album again.

As a big metal fan I never felt connected with Black Sabbath (except maybe few Dio era albums). I mean everything is just too raw for me, especially drum tracks. When Iron man is on a radio I'd rather switch it to Johnny Hates Jazz. I cannot give it lower than 3 stars based on the influence this album had on the later metal acts I listen to

It’s a classic, for sure, and it’s interesting how fully it has been folded into the cultural mainstream fifty years later. Some of the lesser known songs are just mid, though.

I would have loved to hear Ozzy use his nasally voice to sing some Blink 182. This is a Black Sabbath album. i guess it's THE Black Sabbath album because it has Paranoid & Iron Man on it. I just find this band to be so goofy....

TOO LONG.

It was cool to listen to such a classic in its entirety. I’ve heard snippets throughout the years, but it’s nice to hear them in context. That being said I don’t know if I would ever muster the internal motivation to relisten to this. It’s not exactly to my taste, though I do recognize it sounds great and has had a massive impact on culture. Iron Man basically sounds like a lullaby how recognizable the chorus is, but I would much sooner put on the Cardigan’s cover of Iron Man than the original.

War pigs was really really good. I honestly wouldn't listen to the rest of the album but in general it was nice that it wasn't too intense and that it had a stable message and vibe throughout.

It's a progenitor heavy metal album with some classics on it.

Again with Sabbath I have to be in the mood, I get why people love it but it’s not my go to. Drumming is great and there are some great riffs but after a strong start on the first 3 tracks for me it gets a bit repetitive and some of the songs would benefit from being a little shorter. I also always feel like Planet Caravan is an obvious album closer and whilst it’s my favourite song on the album seems miss sequenced to my ear. They are the best at what they do bombastic drums, hard riffs, they did have a great influence on generations of metal bands to come…. I’m just not a metal head so can’t rate it as high as other surely will 3.2

There's a reason only some of these songs are (over)played at sporting events and on the radio. Sure, this is incredibly influential, but overall just feels bland.

Notable Songzeile: Is he alive or dead? Has he thoughts within his head? We'll just pass him there Why should we even care? Singt er die Noten oder spielen sie was er singt? Vermute Ersteres. Denn alles wird den Riffs untergeordnet. Der Sound sowieso, die anderen Instrumente. Die Stimme und der Text. Das ist konsequent und vermutlich haben so sehr sehr viele Leute Gitarre spielen gelernt. Und von denen haben dann fast alle schlechte Metalbands gegründet. Und was hätte ich in meiner Jugend gemacht ohne Konzertabende im Piano mit schlechten Metalbands? Vermutlcih was anderes ähnlich glorious sinnloses. Toll ist das nicht, aber zumindest löst es was aus, Nostalgie oder so. 2,5 wird

I enjoyed it. First half the album was fantastic, Electric Funeral is just awful and seemed to be the turning point of me not enjoying the album as much. I enjoyed the rest of the songs, they just weren't on par with the first half for me.

I think I knew that I was supposed to be impressed and that sort of skewed my listening experience. Was not overwhelmed but not quite underwhelmed either so just whelmed I guess.

Not as good as other Black Sabbath albums I’ve heard. The sludgey songs were harder to get though but can appreciate that it’s a decent album.

Surprisingly chill! Had meer death metal verwacht maar het was best wel fijne classic rock. Niet helemaal mijn ding, maar Planet Caravan was erg fijn, en veel iconische riffs waarvan ik niet wist dat het van hen was. Beste: Planet Caravan.

Surprisingly great riffs and drums. I knew the hits, but for I guess I was expecting something heavier with the knowledge that this is a heavy metal album. No real standouts for me, but it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to.

Heavy metal's not really my thing, but who can argue with the brilliance of the title track, and for this alone it's worth a listen.

War Pigs, Iron Man, and Hand of Doom is really good. I liked Planet Caravan but not enough to want to put it on the Liked Songs playlist. Did not care for Rat Salad or Electric Funeral Never really dabbled with anything Ozzy related but this wasn't really as "jarring" (for the lack of a better term" as I thought it would be.

I don't think it's a complex album in musical terms, but it's still very good.

Paranoid is one of those songs that I don't know by name or artist, but it was ingrained in my head. Iron Man too. It's clear this album was far ahead of it's time. Not sure I'd listen to this one again as it's not my kind of music, but I can appreciate the significance of it.

Didn't really enjoy it, if I'm being honest. I wouldn't put any of these tracks on my favorite list today. That said, I think its fascinating how many of the songs I recognized and had heard. Just not my cup of tea I suppose.

Electric guitar galore. Very 1970's energy. Could be good for a workout? "Paranoid" was great, but the rest lacked the coherence I like from this genre. Distracting.

Probably the best metal album I’ve gotten on this list so far - the parts of the genre I don’t like is when there’s no melody or hook but this album has that so I enjoyed it more for sure

War Pigs good Paranoid great Iron Man is no Smoke on the Water Of the original Big Three Metal Bands, Black Sabbath was always the weakest overall for me but also I admire their enduring legacy and this is a pretty good album. They lose me in psychedelica which I don’t think is their forte and instrumentally they’re nothing compared to Zeppelin but I had fun while it lasted. The drummer was annoying. Get a second move that isn’t 4-8 rapid hits on that drum. You’re no Bonham.

2/3. Never listened to much Sabbath, but I knew the big ones on this album, and genuinely enjoyed the rest. Some really cool guitar solos, a heavy, trippy, psychedelic metal sound, and great lyrics on War Pigs and Iron Man. Faeries Wear Boots scratches a prog itch for me too.

I'd heard the singles but I had never listened to this album all the way through before. I was pleasantly surprised.

(4/7) A few good ones on here, but the second half feels like one loud, extended guitar solo

Pretty good but the pacing appears a bit slow from a contemporary perspective. Though the riffs make sitting through the long textless segments easier, they cannot erase the small moments of boredom they create. Solid anti-war songs but they lack a bit of creativity, which still doesn't detract from the beatiful images the text creates. Lacks cohesion though that strangely makes it more endearing. Bests songs are Paranoid and Hand of Doom. 6/10, good for long car rides and quiet evenings, wouldn't put it on with guests or as background.

Admittedly I am not a big metal guy. I have a couple songs I like over bands/albums. This was enjoyable for the most part, but its not the kind of metal I would go back to often.

I started this album expecting to hate it, but I actually really liked it! The first half was better than the second for me. Really appreciated the instruments, it was nice to hear them each come through with such good focus

Both expected and not expected Black Sabbath to sound like this. I am not the biggest fan of the singing style. I like the general sound, although seemingly too simple for me.

Went to the library with a friend in about grade 5 to try borrowing a record. He said you gotta get this one. Seemed evil and dangerous. I don't know if I ever listened to it, but it's better than what I've forgotten. Paranoid is a great track, Fairies wear boots stands out for side 2.
