Amazing album. Classic.
Ich liebe diese Gitarre!
honestly just imagining being a teenager and hearing this when it came out???? UNBELIEVABLE
Some great songs on here
I have already heard this album, but I love it anyway. Amazing gloomy riffs, Ozzy’s voice Is amazing
Didn’t know I liked Black Sabbath that much. Iron Man and Paranoid are iconic.
This is a really fantastic and historical heavy metal album. Actually groundbreaking in 1970. The songs paranoid, and with war pigs really show off what the band is all about. The song iron Man tells a really cute little story and is a must play for any early heavy metal guitar. God, wannabe. Tony's guitar riffs are really cool. Even though most of them are simple to play. You would never know that some of the adjustments he makes because of his disability. It. And Ozzy is a great front man. I don't want to see him bite the head off of a live bat, but I can always understand his lyrics and he just adds to the bands. Persona. Even if you're not into heavy metal, this is definitely worth a listen.
01) War Pigs - 8,5 02) Paranoid - 10,0 03) Planet Caravan - 10,0 04) Iron Man - 8,5 05) Electric Funeral - 8,5 06) Hand Of Doom - 8,5 07) Rat Salad - 7,5 08) Fairies Wear Boots - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,69 (87/100) "Planet Caravan" is so different than the rest of the album, love it! "Paranoid" is a rock/metal royalty. Not the fan of the genre, but this is very, very good...
Alreet like
Great
Lots of classic Sabbath tracks on this one, very forward thinking
Amazing and influential album that still holds up, but I’ll say it - Iron Man is a pretty dopey song aside from the outro
Sabbath! I mean, what can you say about the goddamn Prince of Darkness. As silly as it is, this music rips. Punk and metal owe an outsized debt of gratitude to Ozzy, whether you dig this or not. I don’t listen to a ton of Black Sabbath, but I’m never disappointed when it comes on. Some of these songs are just linchpins of hard rock music. I think anytime someone plays “Paranoid,” Jack Black goes into a spasmodic fit wherever he is. Bring on the rat salad. I had fun with this.
7.5/10
Though I can't stand Ozzie Osborne and most of Black Sabbath's catalog beyond the early early, I can't deny that Paranoid is a heavy metal classic. Like many kids growing up during the 70's, the song Paranoid was the gateway to listening to metal/heavy rock, so much better than most of the crap on the radio. Ironically, I probably first heard the song on the radio and was hooked by the rhythm and heavy riffs. This is the only BS album I actually own and the rest of the album carries on the darkness and metal hooks and I have to admit, I like it a lot. Some of the best "signature" songs for the band are on here, War Pigs, Iron Man and of course, Paranoid. I'm not a big fan of metal and to me later Sabbath hits parody territory, but there are few metal albums that I love to listen to repeatedly and this is one of them.
This is an album that I have listened to before. I really like Black Sabbath so this album was perfect for me. War pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Hand of Doom are all fantastic. Planet Caravan also needs a special shout out for being so out of the ordinary for this band. I like the smooth and more calm switch up. Solid album that I will continue to listen to.
Black Sabbath are kings of the guitar riff. Very simple, classic rock instrumentation. Just guitar, bass, drums. Good stuff. The vocals are quite minimal actually. For all the hoopla about demonic influence there's not that much to worry about. Compared to modern music anyway. Lil Nas X would kill a 70s church wife with one glance. I know War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man the best but all these songs are pretty good. Planet Caravan was a nice chill moment. Rat Salad has a fun name.
Sehr gut
- war pigs is the longest song i’ve ever heard - i know paranoid! and iron man!
CLASSIC
Great album
Goede metal wel
Great album. It’s a shame there is a generation that only knows Ozzy as a guy who mumbles around the house and burns omelettes, or whatever the hell he did on that show.
Strong album, with Standouts in War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan, and Iron Man.
would be a 5/5 as instrumentals only
Nine inch nails WISHES, very rocky without being overbearing, guitar good, kind of dad music in a good way
Nr. 47/1001 War Pigs 5/5 Paranoid 5/5 Planet Caravan 5/5 Iron Man 4/5 Electric Funeral 4/5 Hand of Doom 4/5 Rat Salad 3/5 Fairies Wear Boots 4/5 Average: 4,25 Already liked Vol. 4 and this is even better. Excellent and groundbreaking album. Didn't reach 5 stars for me, because I'm not the biggest fan of the heavy metal genre.
Started very strong and faded in the last half
Honestly this relisten was just as good as my first listen, and maybe even better. Loved the guitar and even though the songs get a tiny bit repetitive (riff wise), it still kicks ass.
What can I say about this that hasn't already been said a million times. It is one of the cornerstones of rock and metal. It's a classic for a reason.
Meget bra
War Pigs!
This entire album is like one of those "500 riffs you should know on the guitar" youtube videos condensed. Nothing in particular stood out to me but nothing turned me off of this album either. This is an album for guitar players and guitar lovers. Faves: War Pigs/Electric Funeral, Iron Man, Electric Funeral
hell yes. i dont know if this is their Best but it does slay. i do however wish i didn't think of robert downey jr every time that iron man riff plays... ugh
i liked it
It's a good album with good songs, but I don't think I'll be listening in the future! I do think it's really funny to end your album on a song that's like "these mean punks ruined our show .. that was so GAY of them don't you guys agree". I do think I would've liked the album much more if it had something more interesting happening melodically, because everything else should have clicked more for me. I kept thinking about In the Court of the Crimson King and how much better it was while covering some similar themes and moods. I'm going to give this a 4.... but it's a conflicted 4. Favorite songs: War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan Worst song: Fairies Wear Boots. why don't you go eat a dove's head and calm down Ozzy.
Probablemente su mejor disco. Muchas rolas favoritas de la prepa.
It’s wild that this album came out in the 70s. Talk about blazing a trail. Fun listen. Three metal anthems in one 15 minute stretch. Fantastic.
All time classic heavy metal. 8/10
Paranooiiiiddd
ja lekker
Luke' Wall and Planet Caravan really surprised me. Wasn't expecting that from a Black Sabbath Album. Rat Salad has a great mix and great drum and guitar work. Overall 4/5
War pigs, best introduction to an album you can have, Paranoid is a good but basic song, a classic Planet caravan really surprised me, it's really far apart from the rest of the songs but it's comforting in its own way The next few songs are more of the same from before, but the intensity and quality of sound is absurd for its time, I guess this album shows that if you the simple things right you can also create something great, there aren't overly complex solos or intricate baselines, but the instruments all work very well together and do their job perfectly Still to this day Iron Man has the most surprising story being told in the lyrics that few people seem to notice Great album, not the best but maybe if it weren't for this one we wouldn't have the heavy metal scene that we have today
solid. 10/10 smash heard it a lot before and love it
4-4.5
I have always been a fan of Black Sabbath, so this album was right at home. Have heard most of the songs before listening to the album.
Solid album, really like the instrumentals
Just classic and nice rock. Very nice and clean sound too. I'll pretend I understand good mixing, cause this seems to crystal clear too.
Was actually really good, good background music, the songs all had the same sort of rythm/vibe but it was good, fav song was iron man
Absolutely a classic classic rock album, very nice all around and with plenty of individual heavy-hitters. Big fan of War Pigs already but Electric Funeral and others surprised me. Should've listened to the whole album sooner
Classic pizza party songs. Intensity personified.
Duh duh
Fire Paranoid is my favorite Honorable mentions: war pigs, iron man, planet caravan, electric funeral
Suprassumo do rock n roll. Spotify ficou no aleatório do nada? Agora sim heueheue.
I hate admitting that this really is a banger because I think so much of the lyrics feel like they're forced into attempt to work with the music, but knowing how many drugs Ozzy was likely doing, you kinda have to let that go and just run with it.
A heavy metal classic.
If you'd spent the past 10 years wearing flowers in your hair, dreaming about California on a winters day or picking up good vibrations then............ well, this would have come as a shock right? Testament to the impact and longevity is that (a) plenty of people born post '70 still have this as one of their top albums to this day and (b) the fact that "metal" / "hard rock" was pretty mainstream by the time I was growing up in the late 80's. 4.49 out of 5. Doesn't quite get to the magic 5 because it doesn't give me the "feels" but it gets pretty darn close.
Very short but very enjoyable
This was cool. It's definitely a notable sound for 1970. I already knew I liked the popular stuff, but some of the deeper cuts were nice as well. Not my highest 4, but a 4. My favourite song was War Pigs.
Really thoughtful order of album. The songs were made to go after each other - really cohesive.
Great metal album, I took off a star because they’re British :(
I can’t not think about Jack Black singing this
Heavy metal classic
Never listened to this the whole way through but really enjoyed it. A big step forward from their first album released in the same year.
A real middle school album right here. One that's still awesome and not cringy. I sure had good taste
So hyper, insane yas rock
definitely is a classic but overrated well is not all this
I knew it would be good. But not this good!
This album is pretty great, and is the first Sabbath album I became super familiar with. It's pretty dynamic throughout, though loses some steam in the last few songs for me. 3.5/5
Somehow I ignored Black Sabbath albums for most of my life, probably assuming it'd sound too "old" or something. However, this album is just very good. I really enjoyed it. 4/5
I’ve always been somewhat conflicted on Paranoid, especially after years of spinning it. I think the first side is ridiculously overplayed and I can go the rest of my life without hearing any of it, aside from “Iron Man”, which in the right moment still shakes me to my core. But side B? That’s as perfect as metal gets. The oversaturation makes the album feel overrated to me. Give me Master of Reality or the Dio stuff any day. But this is still as essential as you can get. A-, just missing the 5 star threshold
Cat: excellent. Best Black Sabbath. Just enough rock to balance out just enough evil. AJ: 🤘🏻
It was pretty good, I had never heard it
Jättebra skiva, inte deras bästa dock.
- It's a great album. Just front-to-back jams. - The title track might be the best metal song of all time? Maybe not. But when I'm listening to it, it feels like it is. - Jack the Stripper is underrated. - This coming out in 1970 is so bizarre to think about. I never think about how this is kind of a response to the counter-culture, but it really is: a burn-the-house-down fuck you to the Woodstock era of peace and love. I can't imagine how heavy this must have sounded when it was first released.
Solid album with an amazing cover.
Phone, office, not first listen, not single sitting, FT: Planet Caravan
Dark and real. Just as relevant today as it was then
This album really starts out with the bangers that are associated with Black Sabbath. Great early heavy metal, no real low points in this one. Lots of highs. I'm sure lots of people will give this one a 5, but it's a 4 for me!
That was pretty good!
This is what I think of when I think of 70s rock. War Pigs and Paranoid are soo good.
Great album with a lot of their biggest and best hits. Not a bad track on the album, and if flows together very cohesively.
A classic.
Pretty cool !
Very very good, but it felt like every song followed the exact same template and Ozzy's voice isn't exactly one of my favorites. Everything else was solid.
I appreciate this album for what I imagine it did for music. It encouraged the moody boys the crank up the distortion and to tighten those drums and hit a little bit harder. It can be seen as the mutated species that decides to step onto land for the first time and into the new world outside and spawned everything after, for better or for worse. Ozzy was a maverick. This album has some wicked guitar work and his voice shines as the premier attraction. War pigs is an exceptional song.
overall rating: 8.5/10 favourite song: fairies wear boots ( 8.5/10 ) runner up favourite: paranoid ( 8.5/10 ) least favourite: planet caravan ( 5/10 ) album cover: 9/10 vocals: 8/10 instrumentals: 8.5/10 would i recommend ? : YES other: i have heard a few songs from this album before. i think the creator of this website really like black sabbath.
partly clouded by the records fixation with the vietnam war, while i felt paranoid planet caravan rat salad and jack the stripper all carried the energy. i understand this was released in the 70’s but this is an opinion journal not a critical review so i get to say i don’t especially care for the vietnam war as a topic of mainstream art and rock
Hard to listen to this album without thinking of the cartoon character Ozzy became later in life, but this is still pretty great.
Iconic album. Heavily stylised and dark; somehow leans more towards aesthetic than substance, which isn’t always a bad thing. It basically became a prototype for a whole new sound which is an undeniably incredible achievement!
War pigs brilliant opening track, 🔥🔥
Didn't know what to expect going in. The music was really good, and the lyrics were very political and hard-hitting. Not something I would usually listen to, but it really gave an epic soundtrack to my daily life.
Really good
I never knew how much I enjoyed black sabbath before this!
Super cool
Great album
3.6 good, black sabbath is probably my favourite metal band faves: planet caravan, war pigs
I could take or leave Ozzy, but this is great album.
Didn’t hate it.
This is the kind of metal that makes me understand why my metal friends like the genre.
Everyone growing up in the 70s knows Black Sabbath. War Pigs and Ironman were Hugh hits and staples at most high school parties. Good to reminisce while listening to this album.
This is the first time I’ve heard Black Sabbath outside their singles, and it’s great. So much better than I ever gave credit for - I thought they’d be the ‘Ozzy Show’, but they’re so much more than that. I used to be obsessed with Stoner rock / sludge / doom when I was a teen, and I could never understand why Black Sabbath were always cited as a key influence on those genres. I get it now. Tony Iommi has a way bigger legacy than his peers. I remember watching a documentary on him when I was a kid and that very distinctive guitar sound he has is because he lost the tips of his fingers working in a factory, and has metal tips. Must’ve been a right bastard to have that happen to you; but it worked a treat. Not half as cliche as I expected, and so much more than the singer. In fact his role is minimal. The whole record almost sounds like it was created in a 70s Birmingham factory. 4.5
Planet Caravan and Paranoid are great. I initially was hesitant to listen to this album, however it was a very fun ride. Never boring, sometimes daft, but quite well-made with a great overall sound.
7/10 pretty cool, a few good songs but nothing really special
Dedicating this 4 star rating to Nolan. Ty Nolan
I mean how can you not give this a 4. The first two songs alone are enough to give a 4. It doesn’t have a 5 bc honestly i don’t love it front to back. but there’s enough meta here for get a 4
IM POPEYE THE IRON DOOOOOOM MASK MAN
Cool album very good excellent I likey
Can't believe I needed to wait 80 albums for some good, proper metal
Wow, I could've sworn I'm not familiar with this music, but I know almost every track. Every one is a massive hit!
Wow. This would be a gut punch of a record but it's got too much artistic finesse. Black Sabbath have long been in a metal box that I haven't opened. What a listening experience this was. The riffs are big, roaring and relentless but also varied. This isn't just heavy for the sake of it. Planet Caravan is the best example here - an unexpected ambient prog rock interlude - those sort of shifts appear in shorter sequences across the record. Ozzy's vocals adds here too, they're tough but also sort of soft, reminded me of a screamier Jagger or Plant. Big. Very big. That this came out in 1970 makes it even more monumental.
4.5
Nice album, probably my favorite Black sabbath album
This is one of those albums that is so good it stuns me into silence, and it's a struggle to think of anything to write. How can I do it justice with my commentary? Well, here goes. Mass destruction, mass death, and mass brainwashing are the order of the day. Mix mechanized slavery and the Bomb into this, and you have a recipe for mass drug use to numb ourselves from the bleak reality of this dystopia we're all living in. I mean, what's worth living for anymore? That's the societal commentary here. But you know what? That music! So beautiful and calming. Let it sweep your paranoia and sadness away. "Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up?" --William Faulkner, 1950
Signature songs, riffs galore and great vocals. A classic.
A classic.
Like a greatest hits. Much more to it than Vol. 4
I arrived surprisingly late to the party on this album. I don't really know why I missed it so entirely in my teens when I was really into what we now call classic rock. My hunch is I had a negative association in my mind between the band and some people I knew back then, or that I mistakenly assumed the band played hardcore doom metal or something like that because of the name and Ozzy's public image. But, hey, better late than never and I'm glad that a few years ago I listened to this album and still absolutely love it. So many great tracks on this record, and this band is full of genuinely superb musicians. And I honestly could listen to an hour-long version of 'Planet Caravan'. Tony Iommi's guitar work on that song is stunning.
Yeah, man, great stuff. So why only 4 stars? Dunno really. There's something a little ridiculous about this one, which is also part of it charm, but is also a little much. It's hard to argue against an album as influential as this one, brimming with all-time classics like War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man. Though at the same time, the lyrics annoy me on this one in a way that they don't on their first album. I still love Hand of Doom and Faeries Wear Boots, though.
This made me angry in all the right ways
The back half of this is really weak compared to the front half. But it doesn't matter. It's metal being born.
I often wonder what it must have been like to hear an album that is so unlike what has gone before. I'd love to go back to 1970 and see
Memorable riffs for days form a potent rebuttal to the flower children, direct from England’s industrial wastes. While this LP misses some of the tenderness that would come with later records, it’s a cohesive and thrilling statement by an incredibly young band.
I was never really a fan of Black Sabbath but you gotta appreciate this awesomeness
Listened Before? Y What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? It's probably one of the most classic hard rock/metal albums of all time. It's front-to-back good songs and it's simple. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Iron Man
The track listing is clearly, in part at leas, the inspiration behind some of Spinal Tap - hilarious in places. I'd never really listened to most of this before - beyond the obvious track - and it was a fun listen on the whole. I liked it more than the easy Deep Purple I had a little while back and it seemed a bit more straight down the line. Perhaps it's the organ on Deep Purple stuff? An enjoyable listen. Yes, there's a drum solo but it's not quite as obnoxious. Might have scored a five without it though.
4,5
Less great than 1 and 4, but side A is stacked.
Three great classics, but the rest is good too. Hard to believe this album is so old! Barely out of the sixties!
Slight dip in the middle but very very good album
Fun!
Between songs like the title track and Iron Man, one could easily think this is a milestone of a classic album. This is further supported by the absence of duds, as well as a fairly mild aging effect (plus, let’s face it, although the album is considered “metal” it’s nothing like what passes for metal these days). I Therefore argue one is absolutely right.
5ish, but not quite.
Classic
One of my favorite Black Sabbath albums.
Rich album. Worthy.
A true metal masterpiece that laid the groundwork for future bands in the genre. So many of its themes still ring true 50 years later.
Jackson Pollock Ideas: Now Black Sabbath I can get into. This is so much better than other bullshit heavy stuff. Planet Caravan has me feeling some type of way. I'm loving the variation, it doesn't feel like I'm getting punched in the face over and over again. I'm ready for Iron Man to be punchy now. Boomfa left hook. Ok it was good for a metal, but definitely not enough for a 5. Also need to listen again for fav and least fav tracks, good sign that I didn't hate any tracks. Favourite Tracks: Planet Caravan Least Favourite Tracks: Overall: Thought it was pretty good maybe like a 7.5 on first listen, really good for a metal as I'm no fan. Had more respite from the heavy instruments then some current stuff I have heard. Still can't say I loved the heavy moments. Had some very cool instrumental moments, and the lyrical content sounded passionate. I feel like this rating could vary a lot with further listens. But its a low 4/5. (~7.5)
I enjoyed this!
ok this album rules!
Iron Man was the first Sabbath song I heard and 30+ years later it's still their best song. Does it need Planet Caravan or Rat Salad? Who cares when the rest of it's so bloody good.
Slay
Very good!
Not my thing as I don’t like Ozzy’s voice but I see why ranked.highly.
Don’t like classic rock but this was pretty good
I was super surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. Solid headbanging music that was interspersed with some genuine jazz influenced jams.
This and CotCK are the types of albums I embarked on this journey to find. Overall I'm super impressed with how good this album sounds, both on a musical level and a technical one. Really tight playing and great mixing to really bring out the interesting bits of each song. * War Pigs * Paranoid * Iron Man * Hand of Doom War Pigs - great mixing, great vocals, great riffs, great song Paranoid - annoying sound in right ear lol
Some of it wasn't too bad, need to listen again.
Really cool album with some great songs
Perdón yo me cebo a escribir y no paro.
4/5 I was wrong about how metal they were. I think I memorized the wrong band, TBH. I knew the most songs from this album than any other, and it had levels and paced itself so that when it rocked it was hardcore. I even shouted out praise after a drum solo, that's how much I like it. Would listen again. ( I'm now convinced that the more familiar an album is, the more I will like it. Further investigation needed.)
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, had more layers and levels than I expected. Would listen to again.
4.5 This album is amazing. It just might be a 5/5 for me in the near future.
Liked this more than I expected as I'm not a big heavy metal fan.
Come on, Black Sabbath in E Standard tuning is like Thanksgiving without the cranberry sauce. Gimme that sludgy C# riffage. Paranoid is easily their most iconic album and stands as a relatively safe entry point to Heavy Metal, but they'd go on to make even better work than this.
Great album, a little dated but stick worth a listen Side one is great with some classic tracks Side two I felt loses it a little but still good - too short
Este es el clásico de los clásicos. Magnífico álbum
4.5
A great metal album.
Really good album, great songs and riffs on Warpigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Faerie Boots
an album of two sides. Part one contains some of the great heavy metal tracks - Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man - while Planet Caravan showcases that Sabbath were talented musicians and not just riff merchants. The second side really dips and there is nothing to stand comparison with the first four tracks. Still a really good album
The classic sabbath record. A classic that has become a boilerplate for a lot of metal but it's starting to sound a bit dated to me and I find it a bit predictable which is a shame because it's good music.
This is peak Black Sabbath.
I mean, it's Black Sabbath
Jazzier than I expected. Felt like a good intro to metal, which I've never got into. Enjoyed this a lot.
Better than I was expecting
Decent album. Didn't realize that most of the Black Sabbath tracks I already new were from a single album. Planet Caravan was probably the surprise previously unknown to me standout.
Outstanding.
Bestes Black Sabbath Album für mich bisher.
Love Ozzy, wish he was featured more, iconic album either way.
4.5 / 5 Brilliant. Great stuff start to finish.
yup that's a 4
Some classics in here.
we poggin
Enjoyed this. Also, it helped me power through some of my mountain of housework during nap time, which is I'm sure exactly what they had in mind for their music.
That’s was great, and it’s clear how influential Black Sabbath was on Alice In Chains!
8/10
Better than the last one. I like it 👍
great record
Pretty fucking good
I knew War Pigs, Paranoid, & Iron Man going in. I don't have a ton of experience with metal, so the rest was new to me. Not going into my main rotation, but I can appreciate it.
Thumping and bumping all through the night. Incredible album.
Always loved this album. Paranoid is an underrated all time song.
This album, while almost 30 years old when I was in high school, takes me back there. We listened to it a lot during some of my sports practices, so it's nostalgic there. It's not quite perfect, but it's pretty darn close.
listened to again definitely some classics
Hadn’t ever really given BS a chance but this album is great. Fun and rocking. The music and lyrics all fit the album well. Makes me excited to see if more Ozzy or BS shows up!
Great songs, all of them!
Niet elk nummer is geweldig. Andere nummers springen er weer echt uit.
War Dogs is such a great song. I also like Paranoid and Iron Man, but not sure if I've heard the rest of the album before. Musically; this is a great album, I probably would prefer listening to this album without Ozzy singing, and just enjoy the music.
Insane album ozzy vocals are great
Jolly good.
- Recorded 4 months after the release of their debut album - Everyone is playing so intensely you can tell they’re giving their all - Some spots are. Bit rough around the edges but it adds to the emotion and heaviness of the whole thing - This album has so many classics, war pigs, paranoid, iron man - Ozzy’s vocals are super strong here, interesting use of tremolo and vocal effects throughout Fav - War pigs - Classic heavy riffs, ozzy sounds great - Big boomy drums least fav - hand of doom - I like the bassline and quiet loud contrast, great guitar work but the song as a whole doesn’t excite me 4/5
pretty good album
Really liked it! Surprised me.
Kova, tosi kova, rautanen. Ei silti riitä ihan kuninkuusluokkaan asti.
Assumed I would hate this, but really enjoyed!
Thought this was going to be fucking shit but I actually enjoyed it. Going to give it another spin!
Couple big tunes couple duds.
Another classic. Black Sabbaths “Paranoid” was another benchmark in history for music. Im not the biggest fan of metal, but this is an exception. Fr shoutout Black Sabbath. Favorite tracks: Paranoid, Iron Man, and I liked Hand of Doom & Jack the Stripper / Fairies Wear Boots more than I used to.
Belting - 3 or 4 total bangers here, and not much is better than Warpigs
The highs of Paranoid have something of the curse of familiarity, initial heaviness giving way to hits which sometimes get a little silly. But silly is hardly a bad way to be, and that Black Sabbath register worked its magic on me quietly. No duds here, just solid tunes. The band trades experimentation for stability and still rocks.
This was cool when I was 15 and obviously pretty groundbreaking for its time. It holds up relatively well, which is pretty impressive.
Amazing guitar riffs and Ozzy's vocals are just fantastic
Love it. Classic again. Raunchy
Iron Man and Paranoid
War pigs
Did not know they made Ironman, which I only knew from Cardigans. Whole album survived like Ironman does
I liked this a lot more than expected
Despite not liking Metal as a genre, I do love a bit of Sabbath. They did it first, and best. Iy’s easy to forget that tis album was released in 1970. Paranoid is a fantastic tune, but I found my attention wandering after the first half of this album. War Pigs is great too, so maybe I just love the ‘hits’? Still a great album though.
As much as I love "Iron Man" and "Paranoid", "Planet Caravan" is now my favorite song off this album.
This is the best Black Sabbath album on the list. I had not heard this whole album in its entirety before. Several of the songs are classics and are great. Although War Pigs does not need to be 7 minutes long. Paranoid is the best song on the album.
The first four songs were legendary. The other half of the album was decent. Ozzy Osbourne is the man.
So many classics on this album
Listened to on 8/29/22 4/5 Favorite song: paranoid Metal music usually scares me but this album was phenomenal and had pretty much all of their hits on it
Some classic guitar riffs that kick butt. Favorite song is Paranoid.
Knew Paranoid from Guitar Hero and war pigs from radio. First listened to full album in 2015 on mushrooms. Amazing. Not quite as good as Black Sabbath (album), but still very good. 5/8 Stars
Banger
it's fine? i liked it? Highlights: planet caravan war pigs
Pretty great!
Legendary, exciting to listen to.
Planet Caravan-- sophisticated slow roll is a nice break Fairies Wear Boots- solid rocker with cool time signature changes. Love this Overall, I'm digging this album a lot! Political , good jams, and solid instrumentation .
I knew of Black Sabbath. I had not listened to the full album before. Very nice indeed
Classic
first half is a monster!
Classic! Love the hits. Album cuts were solid but not quite the same level...
A classic and solid album.
more fun than I imgined!
Kicking things off with an album I've heard countless times and never tire of. It's like the algorithm KNOWS ME. Fantastic album and has some of my favourite Sabbath songs on it. War Pigs never ceases to get me into a rockin' good mood. Same for Paranoid. Planet Caravan is simply haunting. And such a change in mood and groove from the previous tracks. Iron Man always makes me think about The Road Warriors because in the early days of their wrestling career that was their walking to the ring music. Love the bluesy groove to Hand of Doom.
Very good, definitely revolutionary for its time and greatly influential for many years to come. For me it's not exactly the sound I'm actively looking for these days. In the past I liked it way more than now, but tastes change and evolve so I'm not blaming the album for suddenly getting worse or anything like that.
Solid album and always a great listen.
Classic Black Sabbath. Surprised with grooviness of the song Planet Caravan.
It holds up amazingly well: they really were on the leading edge of something new and all the elements are harmonized in service of that sound and sensibility. There is a little too much muddy recording and sometimes kind of dumb lyrics (though they are mostly pretty good and well ahead of most of their genre ilk) for a perfect score, but it’s a great album.
4 insgesamt
An all time fav! More than four stars but not quite five
What is there to say about this album that hasn't been said a million times? Black Sabbath paved a road forward for heavy metal with this 1970 album. It would become a blueprint for successful heavy metal music for decades to come. The album has some of the most amazing and memorable riffs to ever grace music, and at least THREE songs from this album (War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man) have stood the test of time and are acknowledged as among the best heavy metal songs ever, even all these decades later. Every other song on this album, while not all as commercially appealing to the general public, serve the same level of amazing quality metal and offer a blueprint of success for the genre going forward. This album is iconic. This album is the definition of legacy.
very good start to finish
Solid album by Black Sabbath. To think that this came out in 1970 is pretty crazy. The landscape of music was not ready for what Black Sabbath contributed at that time. Really changing the rock genre towards something more hardcore. This album is probably their best with great riffs and eerie lyrics and sounds. Plus some of their most popular hits. 7.7/10
a legendary album that's a teensy bit played out at this point, but an incredibly accessible foray into metal-like sounds.
Wow, that was really good. Much better than expected. 4.5/5
Solid album with some undeniable classics!
War Pigs to Electric Funeral, all bangers. After that I feel like it loses steam. The vocals aren’t my favorite, but sometimes they work well.
This turns out to be a really good album. Obviously some classics like War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man; but even ones I don't know like Electric Funeral and Jack the Stripper (dumb name) are pretty rad.
A musty, dark and rather crabbit little album - if you forget that it's also casually helping to invent heavy metal in the first place. The interplay between Ward's impressionistic drumming and Butler's bass playing is beautiful. Yes, Iommi provided the huge riffs ('Iron Man' pretty much kick-starting the entire doom metal genre) but it was the boys in the rhythm section who ensured Sabbath's sound remained so idiosyncratic. Lovely stuff!
Not as terrible as I was expecting
Absolutely ace! A heavier, more fun version of Led Zep with a slightly less screechy vocal, but far more political lyrics. Rightly a classic with surprising laid back jazzy song as well. Great!
Classic album, really ahead of it's time. Loved it, but it's not perfect.
OOGH. Another childhood staple. Grew up on this one. This album is definitely one of the best in the style. Possibly THE best in the style. The style happens to not be my ALL TIME FAVORITE THING EVER IN THE WORLD. I really want to give this 5 stars but I don’t knowwwwww. I don’t feel blown away by it. I just don’t. It really is perfect. I have 0 complaints. But I just don’t feel blown away by how good it is. If I could play like any of these people I’d trade in the skin on my face. I’m sorry but 4. A really high 4. Maybe if I smoked. Idk. I’m sorry.
It's a seminal and influential album that misses the 5 stars for me because it meanders off halfway through but War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man and Fairies Wear Boots are as good as it gets.
Yeah, this is excellent. 4/5 for me. Opening track is really fun, then Paranoid is a classic. Planet Caravan (Track 3) is really odd - feels completely out of place on the album and isn't interesting at all in its own right for me. Back to form on Iron Man, then a couple of good but not great songs before it perks up again at the end. Only critique of the album as a whole is that the songs drag a little bit, could maybe do with shaving 30 seconds to a minute off a few of them. Paranoid really leaves you wanting more, but some of the others go on a bit too long.
Good stuff.
8/10 very good in spite of corny lyrics
7/10. Some good songs, but probably wouldn't relisten to the whole album
I really love parts of this album but other parts felt pretty slow. 8/10
Good band, good albun
Classic. The whole "First side" of the album is amazing. That side alone is a 5/5. The rest of the album is good too. Standouts: Iron Man, War Pigs, Paranoid Others; Planet Caravan
Classic rock is classic.
A lot less heavy than I thought it would be. I wasn't aware of the non-hook sections of this album and was way more musical than I was expecting. Ozzy was charismatic and def a force in this band, but I would classify him as musically-inclined and not necessarily a musician. "Hand of Doom" that intro made me think I had cut to a diff album
Total classic.
'Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses'... what a kick-off! This is one of those albums that transcends whether I normally like that kind of music, it's so good. One of the, if not The, greatest metal albums of all time I'm sure. My top pick is 'War Pigs' but I also enjoyed 'Paranoid' and 'Fairies Wear Boots'. Another time I wish this a ten star scale as this is really a 9.
Classic. Probably gonna have this album on heavy rotation for the next few weeks
Wow! Trip down memory lane!
I heard this pretty recently, so I don't even need to hear this to know how much I like it. Classic album, although I do prefer their self-titled debut more. Solid 4 for me.
Side 1 is excellent - Side 2 lets it down a little. But overall a great album.
Good 70’s rock
War Pigs is my favorite Sabbath song, I think. This record is excellent. The drums sound so dead. The fuzzed out guitars. Ozzy's vocals are as strong as they'd ever be. I'll always listen to this record. It's heavy but also sort of mellow. I wonder if these guys smoked week? Heh.
This has to be the best Sabbath album, right? War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man - all the songs that drunk bikers karaoke to. I actually do like this album, but I'm not sure why. I think I was surprised by the simplicity of it. It hits you hard, but it's also really under-produced and stripped down. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals - that's it. No special effects - just point a microphone and go. There's something respectable about that. I'm not sure if this is a "hard 4" - but I gave their last album a 3 and this one is definitely superior.
Dope album!! Of course the classics are great but the other 5 songs are still great. Rat Salad might be the exception, but it’s almost like an instrumental interlude. Big fan of this. 8/10
Listening to their music was a simple act of collective ritual that required no education. But unlike Beatles fans (who became pop singers at best), the teenagers who identified with the "lightness" of Black Sabbath's music were the very ones who would form rock bands: Black Sabbath spread an alien virus, the heavy metal virus. (8/10) FT: War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan, Iron Man
Bang
When I was in Middle School, Ozzy was legend. All the stories about biting bats heads off on stage, and his weird performance style were the main attraction. His music I feel took a backseat in the conversations because we were kids and didn't really understand. Now, I am happy to revisit this album. War Pigs is incredible. What a song. The guitar riffs are so awesome, Ozzy sounds great. Paranoid is a classic. Again, it shreds, it rocks, and it is iconic. And Iron Man, of course more iconic riffs and awesome rocking. What an album! And the whole thing clocks in at 42 minutes. Beautiful.
I really enjoyed a lot of this album. Didn't really consider myself a black sabbath guy, but they impressed me.
Track 01 - 5/5 Track 02 - 5/5 Track 03 - 4.5/5 Track 04 - 4.5/5 Track 05 - 4.25/5 Track 06 - 4/5 Track 07 - 3.5/5 Track 08 - 3.5/5 Overall: 4.25/5 Album Art: 1.5/5
Classic album - lots of hits
Track 3 is surprising for a black Sabbath track
First time listen for me - pretty good
Stacked first half. Need to listen to back half again. Great album though.
Great Classic Metal Riffs
Brilliant !! 4*
Hmmm… Have I discovered a little metal head living inside my skin??? I suppose I am still exploring this possibility, but I did find this album quite enjoyable. And, I was told there would be more Satan.
I wasn’t looking forward to a Black Sabbath album. Not really what I typically think of as music I would listen to. But I’m willing to listen to all of these albums once… and I do know the song “Iron Man”. Not my favorite song, but we’ll see. I started the album and realized I did know the first song “War Pigs”. Looking at the lyrics, I found I kind of liked it. Then “Paranoid” came on and I realized I not only know the song, I really like the song! “Planet Caravan” was new to me, but I the moody description sailing through space under the watchful eyes of the war god Mars was a surprisingly tender song. When “Iron Man” started, I started feeling my fingers moving and suddenly realized where I know all these songs from. Several years ago I played a lot of Guitar Hero with my friends and had played along to these songs often… Raised in the 70s and 80s, “Electric Funeral” resonated with its horrific vision of atomic destruction. As a bonus, I think it ends with some just punishment for the wicked. “Hand of Doom” is a surprisingly sultry depiction of war leading to drug addiction. That was a theme on one of the songs on the John Prine album I just listened to as part of this project. How cool is it that doing this 1001 project I can compare/contrast these two artists?! Black Sabbath presents a much more graphic depiction of the subject well-suited to the hard, ominous music they make. “Rat Salad” was a groovy 70s metal instrumental with a prominent drum solo (not my favorite thing in music), but I liked it well enough since it was pretty concise. A lot of bands indulge a little too much in their solos to stay interesting on a recording. I appreciated Black Sabbath keeping this one tight. “Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots” had some good 70s metal to wrap things up. The singer is a bit obsessed with the fairy in boots, and I’m not exactly clear on what the singer is observing. Although maybe the doctor’s diagnosis at the end explains things? I’m glad I listened to this album, and I will listen to them again, although maybe not in one sitting like this. Black Sabbath still isn’t squarely my thing, but I’m more than happy to dabble in their music now and again.
Remember when I heard i first time. I was fifteen years and was surprised over the "new sound". It's a very good record 👍
I'll give it high marks for War Pigs and Paranoid, but I've never really liked Black Sabbath's music. Also I really don't like Iron Man.
I'm not a huge Black Sabbath fan, but there's no denying the riffs and the power of their early albums. They were definitely pioneers of heavy metal. 4 stars.
How have I never listened to this whole album before? Going with 4 but I may regret not setting it as a 5.
Much closer to getting top marks than I expected. Busy boys to follow up with another album the same year as their debut. A couple of massive tracks on there and interesting jazzy stuff as well.
great album great songs, sometimes the flow of the lyrics is a bit lacking
Gosh darn it I'm gonna slap a four on it and be done with it. I'll be honest I had low low expectations here. Never had any interest in listening to these bozos, but it turns out there's nothing bozoic about it. The instrumental tracks of Planet Caravan and Rat Salad (lovely name) are really enjoyable (barring the awfully long drum solo in Rat Salad (lovely name)). As much as it makes me cringe slightly hearing the guitar riffs to Paranoid and Iron Man, on this occasion I feel like applauding them for writing something so catchy and simple. Really enjoyed a lot of the more intricate guitar, especially on War Pigs. I guess I feel like it's pretty intriguing stuff but I wouldn't have it on my living room wall ya know.
