Reviews (page 9 of 15)
After “Ok Computer” I found myself “hate fucking” every Radiohead album after that one. I kept saying to myself “why can’t you be like your sister and stay with the formula that works”. The problem is, is this new Radiohead “formula” works and I continue to eargasm when I listen to the later albums. A person like myself just enjoys it. Do I need to go back to it and listen over and over again like Ok Computer and earlier? No! But I do find myself returning at the most random of times. Without looking it up, I think this album is supposed to be mixed in with OK Computer tracks to make one super album that never happened. At least, according to Radiohead lore. I could be wrong though. Choice cut: All I Need
Still good
4.25
was so excited to have this one show up when I refreshed
Very nice cozy music that I enjoyed thoroughly. Standout tracks: Faust Arp, Reckoner, House of Cards, Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Radiohead remains on the fringe of the bands in my normal rotation. This album was a bit different. I liked the mellow, somber tone of it. Nothing is a single or a pop hit, but as a theme/mood album, it works. I'm going to mope now.
Loved the tranquil melodies, especially like the faster-paced songs that hit a bit harder. Not so much a fan of Thom Yorke's extremely slow, high-pitched, ethereal notes. Those songs were a bit dramatic.
Before this project, I knew maybe one Radiohead song (creep obviously). This is like the 4th Radiohead arriving I've gotten so far, and there are really good. Something about the echo of his voice.
Really good rockoner is amazing
If you caught me in a vulnerable moment, I might say this is the best Radiohead album.
It’s hard to rate this album because I seem to share both love and disdain for it. On one hand it’s one of the most well thought out and meticulously crafted albums of all time. I mean I’ve actually put off rating it for a few days just so i can relisten to it as much as I can(11 times sofar) but I also relistened to it so many times just because I wanted to process the lingering thought that’s in the back of my head and that is that it’s really such a souless record. You hear it right at the start that shitty machine drum, like a big fuck you to the fun chaos that was their previous record and the contempt for anything not perfectly crafted for radio-ears. It goes through the whole album albeit a bit more subtle. For example: the rock song “bodysnatchers” is just there to give the old radiohead fans something to gnaw on and then the 5 different songs which are just “insert sad lyric” because it was so beloved by the media when kid a came out. It’s not perfectly crafted for the love of the music really but for the acclaim of critics, mainstream listeners and the old fans. They did that perfectly.
Bra Pop. Gillade de mesta. En glad överraskning. Kommer lyssna igen.
Gillade denna mer än OK computer och Hail to the thief.
4 - this was objectively better than hail to the thief, and may be a 5, but it needs a second listen first
I see how influential they were
Beautiful
i first heard this like 7 or 8 years ago right? the vocal part in 15 Steps feels like something i heard in an ad as a kid now for some reason first time noticing very big krautrock in Bodysnatchers & the album in general; radiohead fans should go listen to some can or neu or something idk oh and go outside ofc Weird Fishes is still gorgeous ngl and Jigsaw Falling Into Place has a super sweet structure honestly really like these two songs for same reasons oh and House of Cards is pretty fun all in all record doesn't hit me nearly as hard as it does some other people as it turns out and come to think of it even tho i always viewed it as one of their best i did so because of how consistent it is stylistically still feeling like i'd get more general enjoyment from The Bends if i was to listen to it now
Meh
84% Best: Weird Fishes/Arpeggi; All I Need; Jigsaw Falling Into Place; Videotape Must-Hear? Sure
Breaking boundaries with this album by releasing on a pay what you like scheme. I didn't get into it at the time but listening back now very much enjoyed and hear the constistent evolution of the band and their music.
Too much, too soon... 2007 fue también el año de: Arcade Fire / Neon Bible, Low / Drums and guns , Amy Winehouse / Back To Black , Amy Winehouse / Back To Black , The National / Boxer, LCD Soundsystem / Sound Of Silver, M.I.A. / Kala, Animal Collective / Strawberry Jam, Spoon / Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Richard Hawley / Lady’s Bridge, Modest Mouse / We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank , Burial / Untrue , Justice / †, Wilco – Sky Blue Sky, Dinosaur Jr. – Beyond, Queens Of The Stone Age – Era Vulgaris, Soulsavers – It’s not how far you fall, It’s the way you land, y Nacho vegas con Cristina Rosenvinge, Triangulo de amor bizarro, Los planetas, La casa azul.
It's Radiohead, so it's decent, but this is the first album of the "boring Radiohead era". Still good though
This album speaks for itself. 4.4 stars
One of my fav Radiohead albums
So, like most albums from Radiohead, I think you’ll get the best listening experience by listening to it on headphones or earbuds. In this case, you’ll be able to hear different elements of the track in a more multi-dimensional layered soundscape. I’ll point out the opening track “15 Step.” It begins with some vocals, then you hear some rhythmic guitar work. From there, you get some electronic beats and the track builds. The rhythmic guitar feels like it was unearthed from a dusty vinyl collection, looped and layered to create a rustic, vintage foundation. From there, Radiohead overlays clean, polished production of more modern sounds. This approach really adds a lot of depth and texture that blends nostalgic and modern elements seamlessly. Now, this is just one example, but the album is filled with multiple layers where each layer feels like it was created and produced separately.
Another great album, I'm on a run at the moment. I'm a huge Radiohead fan although I will admit I prefer their early stuff but I don't think they have ever made a bad album. Bodysnatchers, Nude, All I Need & Jigsaw Falling Into Place are all highlights but the whole album is worth a listen.
Not my favorite Radiohead album but still solid
Could be a five but it’s like my fifth fav radiohead album
Their best album. A couple songs are still kind of cheeks. Like the last song. 🍑
Enjoyed. 4/5
The drums are very grounding. Videotape: sounds a little like they’ve been listening to Willam Basinski. Really nice avant-something piece. The painterly approach to creating music remains but now it’s watercolor. Lacks the intensity and energy of some of their earlier work. Feels like the band have become extremely comfortable with whatever it is that bothers them. Now we just float around in it. Radiohead are great but I just can’t put my finger on what it is that bothers me about them. Maybe it’s that one time people liked the slow song, so every song is now a slow song. Maybe it’s the weird theorem that all singers want to be Frank Sinatra. It’s my theorem. All singers devolve into their favorite singers. Thom Yorke has a neat voice, but the bars-long sustain can be a bit much sometimes.
Great album but, cmon guys, cheer up.
A great album, my only critique would be that the songs do feel long.
Good album
8.8
Great album
4.0
very somber and light album. Not your typical radiohead feel but is kinda a vibe.
Nothing special, but good. I enjoyed listening it
It's great. Not quite as avant-garde as some would have you believe. Rich and intriguing.
fave track: house of cards
Great variety of melancholic songs with beautiful guitar sounds and faster rhythmic songs.
Guys I think I’m starting to get it. Up-tempo Radiohead is much better than whiney ballad Radiohead. This is definitely my best experience with them so far. Or… maybe I’m just in a good mood today.
What a tune Jigsaw falling into pieces is. Only ever heard that one before from this album so the rest of the album was a suprise to me. I have to be honest It started badly. I really couldn’t stand 15 Step After the disapointment of track 1 the album improved dramatically with bodysnatchers and then with Nude which I would say is the standard Radiohead sound!! That said there are some great songs on this album and its a really enjoyable listen, it will be listened to again! Favourite song: Jigsaw falling to pieces and Bodysnatchers. Great songs. Least favourite: 15 Step Album artwork: Great album cover
This album is peak life years for me. Around this time all I cared about was music, girlfriend and friends. Great times, now I'm an adult with a job and all I care about is making money so I can be free for a few weeks in the year. Great system this capitalism bullshit. Doing great, loving life. The music is also great, they did the rock albums and the the electronic ones and then kind merged them into this. The energetic songs are really great and have those cool beats and snares that were very popular at the time.
Uncomfortably slow execution. 4/5
quite enjoyable, very low-tempo/ambient/atmospheric vibe, i prefer oki computa tho YYM
muy bueno y bonito, clásico moderno!!
Liked it. Darkly atmospheric and forlorn. Experimental in a good way. Everything makes sense here. Not quite as great as The Bends but this one will get revisited again.
Pretty confident this is Radiohead's most listenable and accessible album. I don't want to deduct points for lack of experimentation, since many albums take an already well-known sound and do amazing things with it, this album just doesn't give me much to think on. It's easy listening and decent enough when it's on but there's very little to pull me back to it. 7/10
Decent but nothing standout. Excellent background
This album is probably overrated, but overrated things can still be good. I’ve heard it before and I like it, although it did feel particularly meandering on this listen. Favorite tracks: Weird Fishes, Videotape
Highlights: Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi, All I Need, Reckoner 4,5/5
Day 23 - June 24, 2024 Thom Yorke is a pathetic whining bitch but I'm here for it. 4/5
One of the best
++: 15 Step, Bodysnatchers, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, House of Cards, Jigsaw falling Into Place +Faust Arp, Reckoner, Videotape +-: Nude, All I Need 9,4/10
Every Radiohead album that comes up, I wish I'd listened to them all along. This another great album. It's chiller than some of their past ones, but it's still a good vibe. I listened twice and enjoyed it both times.
good shit but sad memories... hope it changes soon!
Yep sounds like Radiohead
Хочу отметить такие треки как: 15 Step, Nude и All I Need после них всё совсем жидко шло вплоть до Jigsaw Falling Into Place, его я почти добавил к себе, хороший трек.
Awesome and chill
Not the best Radiohead album. Best experienced in a dark room with great headphones
obviously awesome what can you say
It's a pretty good album. So much more to them than creep. The songs are all different, without tiring and overstaying its welcome
I like mellow Radiohead but I like heavy Radiohead even better.
Some of the crunchy, distorted guitar parts in the opening couple of songs weren't my favorite. Otherwise, great album
Do I like radiohead?
you wanna have the blues or listen to something while having a bad day? radioheads got you covered. Although its a little more "upbeat" than their usual, its still melancholy as hell in places.
Chilled Radiohead vibes.
pretty music attuned to the youthful soul
Pretty good, even the bits that sound more like U2
Better then i remember
The more Radiohead I listen to, the more I realize how like the Velvet Underground they are. Not every song is a toe-tapping sing along, and some tracks are a challenge to listen to. But there’s always something interesting going on.
This album has often been recommended, and for good reason. A diverse collection of alternative rock tracks, with meaningful lyrics and pulsing riffs. Radiohead has been sitting on the list and I’m interested to listen to others.
4000% better than ok computer. grew up listening to this album 7.5/10
Trance Chill Alternative. That's Radiohead. It works.
Definitely in my top 3 RH albums just behind OK Computer and The Bends. And it for sure leans more into the sounds and production of OK Computer. Not a bad song on the record and listening on headphones definitely allowed for an alternate feel, from dreamy and airy to downright strange and tension filled. All the feels you want out of a Radiohead album.
A decent album. Doesn't pack the same punch as the Bends or OK Computer, but that might be nostalgia talking.
Well, dammit - do I like Radiohead now? I've been fighting it for a while now, but I really, really liked this album.
Ambient thinness. Grateful for this suggestion. I'd never listenend to a full Radiohead album before. I wish the instruments were given more room to breathe under the vocals.
buuuuuuuus
Good album, lots of interesting time signatures and haunting vocals. I enjoyed this!
Excellent album. Reminiscent of all-night work sessions in Uni. Ethereal and melancholic.
Poco escuchado, rock electrónico. Muy bueno.
Pretty solid, but a little goofy
8/10
very good
Not my favorite Radiohead, but I still enjoyed it. Prefer the more melodic tunes from album like The Bends.
Not their best, but still a very good album. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
Great album and definitely top tier. Beautiful songs that just meld together to create a free flowing album.
I remember in 2007 sitting in my dormroom waiting for the cart to open up so I could buy this album on MP3 from my favorite band. Not only was it a digital transaction which was novel but it was pay what you want! I remember spending $5 then going back and adding $10 more after I listened. This album is a masterpiece of production and motifs. The panning in particular was amazing in an era when earbuds first took off. I've listened to these tracks so many times I know the whole things going to be on repeat in my head all weekend. That said, this one also marks the moment I fell out on Radiohead. I fell in love with them late in middle school. By this album all I wanted was to hear something the wasn't downtempo breathy singing over textured instruments. I love it but it's just all chocolate ice cream the whole way down. It's also just so very serious. It's something ultimately very simple masquerading as something deep and complicated. Once the facade falls off, it's hard not to hold it at arms length.
Have missed a lot of Radiohead. This is good
This is my third Radiohead album to review, after The Bends (5 stars) and Kid A (4 stars). Before starting this project, I'd only listened to A Moon Shaped Pool, which I thought was fine. I was pleasantly surprised by my first two Radiohead albums that I reviewed, and given the word of mouth on this one, I had pretty high expectations going in. In Rainbows is definitely more in line with Kid A, both in terms of overall sound, and how I feel about the album. I enjoyed listening to this album, mostly because it just sounded beautiful. The musical arrangements on each song were all deep and dark, and I felt like they grew better as the album went on. Each song was unique, but they all still managed to fit in with the overall mood and feeling of the album as a whole. As much as I loved the overall sound of the album, it was also full of little details that I’d find myself reacting with verbal ‘ooh’s and ‘aah’s. Also, I didn’t have a lot of familiarity with Radiohead before I started this project, but I’ve really grown to like Thom Yorke’s singing, and this album was no exception to that. If I’m in the mood for Radiohead, I’m more likely to gravitate towards The Bends, because I like its more traditional guitar rock sound, but I like that there were some flashes of that sound present on this album as well. Overall, I liked this album, and I can understand why so many people say that this is their favorite Radiohead album.
4.5
Good chill tunes
Yay weird fishes!! I may not understand Radiohead lyrics but I sure do vibe to them
Listened to at 3am while sick and unable to sleep. Not sure if that helped or hurt the rating
This is the Radiohead album that so many super fans will tell you is their best. I am NOT one of them. “In Rainbows” would be Radiohead perfecting their post “Kid A” sound into a totally digestible piece. There is nothing even remotely bad about this album, but if I’m comparing it to “The Bends”, “Kid A”, or the always timely perfection of “OK Computer”, this doesn’t measure up. I don’t feel the goosebumps rise, or the uncontrollable awe that those three records bring to me, except on “Weird Fishes” and “Reckoner”, and on a good day, “Nude”. The rest feels like Radiohead by numbers. I’m actually way more in love with their next album, 2011’s “The King of Limbs”, but that won’t show up on this list because the critical mass of Radiohead fans and instant internet culture banned that to the garbage bin for being too short and too weird when it first came out. Also it’s worth noting that when this album was released, Radiohead issued a second disc of B-sides along with it. Those are so much better than the album proper. “Bangers and Mash”, “Down Is the New Up”, “Go Slowly” and “4 Minute Warning” could easily have replaced four lower songs on here and made this a truly great record.
Hats off to you again, Radiohead. Great stuff, and super cool for it to be released as a pay what you want album. Pretty revolutionary for that time!
An exceptional album, however still below my favourites The Bends and OK Computer.
I was not that familiar with this album, and while none of the songs seemed as catchy as those from Kid A (my fave of theirs) or OK Computer, the songs all had enough mood and lovely instrumentation, plus some cool effects via headphones, to make me want to revisit this at some point soon.
rahhhhhhh fire
It’s beginning to hit but I’m still not all the way there with it like I am with Kid A or OK Computer
15 Steps - it's different and catches my attention. Feels a cold open to a mysterious journey. Bodysnatchers - I dig it but I want to know more about it Nude - This whole album feels uneasy and leaving me hanging. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - It does sound like the sound track to something in the deep ocean, dreamlike, washed, and with some danger. One of my favorites so far. All I Need - Faust Arp - Like a dark Beatles song Reckoner - House Of Cards - the traditional instrumentation intro caught my attention again. It's a good mix up. I like how this song feels more intimate after most of the rest of the album. Jigsaw Falling Into Place - fairly accurate depiction of a night out, and the darker side behind it. Videotape - The simple piano instrumentation is nice, and I like how the song builds. There's a very human thing about wondering how your life looks when played back.
very good:P muy bien
okay, so this was really good. Especially once I started deep diving into 'Videotape'. This was a really good album. Listened a few times already!
4.5
Just shy of 5 stars. Most of it is excellent with just a few points it slips to feeling to background-y.
Radiohead’s In Rainbow is an ebb, really invoking introspective thoughts. To be frank, I don’t enjoy all of these songs, some of them just don’t hit right, others I find amazing and very listenable. A common theme in this album is the calm and relaxed vibe, and also a sort of pull into the music, repetition, which I like and am intrigued in throughout the album. Highlights include Reckoner, Videotape, and Jigsaw Falling Into Place. All in all, In Rainbows is a good album. best song: Jigsaw Falling Into Place Worst Song: Faust Arp
love this album. felt like i was in on a secret when i bought through their website. his voice has never sounded better imho and the songs are amazing
I accidentally listened to Disk 2 first and, hoo boy, was I about to leave a scathing review. Then I realized my error and, mea culpa. This album is another really good showing for Radiohead. More sad songs about depression and hating fame combined with anthemic-sounding rock and a few elements of electronica (but not the super annoying kind). I'll have to give it another listen and pay closer attention to the lyrics, but I really enjoyed what I heard the first time. I think I like The Bends slightly better, but this was pretty great too. 4/5
Breddy gud :DD
Hadn’t heard this one before! Was a good one
At their best, few bands are as creative or good as Radiohead. This feels like one of their older albums but not at the same time. The album really built its way up and by the end i was really feeling it. Not quite to the level of OK Computer or Kid A but a really solid album and one I would listen to again.
In Rainbows brought me everything I needed. From ethereal vocals to sick bass lines to clean guitar riffs and an atmospheric synth, with moving drum beats to tie it all together. The album gave me a spacey, yet grounded feel. My favorite track is Jigsaw Falling Into Place. Album added to my Spotify library.
15 Step // Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi // Reckoner // Jigsaw Falling Into Place //
Is Radiohead prog? Yeah, because they tried out different things with a combination of electronics and rock on that album. I don't think everything works and soon it drifts off a bit in the background which I mainly attribute to Thom Yorke who is just not to me for a long period of time. Still a good album.
Beautiful
i <3 virgin music
This was a great listen while driving today. Matched my drive time almost perfectly, and was really enjoyable while cruising
Will always remember this album cycle very fondly, 4 years was a very long time between albums of a band you love when you are younger so it felt like they were coming back from the grave. Saw them play outdoors in montreal on this tour and out of ~300 concerts Ive been to it is #1. When they played fake plastic trees fireworks started going off in the background because it turns out there was a fireworks thing happening that same night in the city. Magic! Never liked Body Snatchers and think there are some songs on \"disk 2\" that are much better. Actually I would re sequence the whole thing using the best tracks from both tracks.
4.3
Solid Radiohead album. Has heard before and will listen again.
My favorite modern Radiohead album. A well-rounded listening experience!
Gave this a five last time but it's not The Bends, is it?
It took me a couple of tracks to get into but I really enjoyed it. It's no Kid A, but it's still good. 4 stars.
7.5/10 - 4/5 I listened to this one while really focused on a project. I enjoyed it, but it didn't really stick with me. May need to revisit it sometime. I like the experimentation and overall sound! But I believe I'd like Kid A or OK Computer more.
spilte sykt mye radiohead i praha
Another great Radiohead album. Some amazing stuff from Greenwood on the guitar in this album. A little abstract at times but it flows well enough. Doesn't hit the spot like OK Computer, The Bends & Pablo Honey, but is still a great album to sit and listen to.
Soprendentemente tranqui
I like to think about this album in essentially the same way Ryan Marr does, as he wrote in his flash essay about the album for The RS 500: "as OK COMPUTER LITE: 'Subterranean Homesick Alien' with all the 'Fitter Happier' bullshit stripped away." Which, presented in that context, all by itself, sounds like an insult. Certainly it sounded that way to one member of the group I'm a part of. But it's not to say that OK COMPUTER is worse than IN RAINBOWS. Honestly, on whatever level you wanna define "objective" as, I'd say I still think OK COMPUTER is a better album overall. As for which one I'd return to first, though... OK COMPUTER is great. I just said as much. But it can also be a lot. Y'know, what with it being about the decline of Western civlization and all. IN RAINBOWS, on the other hand, is a lot simpler—and I don't mean that as an insult. It sounds like a much easier record to just throw on and enjoy without having to deal with any pigs in cages on antibiotics. That's true even if I can't really pick any one track as a stand-out like I could with OK COMPUTER ("Paranoid Android" and "No Surprises" for me). I guess to put it some way to close this out, if I'd been around for this album's original release, I wouldn't've paid nothing. Some pretty fine clothes the emperor's got there, I tell you what.
The lasts songs of the album are the best.
Many better albums than this but one of the greatest bands
Videotape
Pockets of upbeat relief from what is otherwise the mood changing depression you expect from Radiohead. I imagine this album gives Radiohead fans absolute raging boners (men and women) - am I a Radiohead fan or have I just had a slightly promiscuous thought? I’m not sure 3.5
I paid nothing for this album. This is a historic mistake, indeed a disgrace. I shall seek to rectify it forthwith. (In my defense, I own every other Radiohead album, have seen them on tour twice, have the t-shirt, and was given a branded jigsaw puzzle once. So, I think the scales are only slightly tilted in their favour!)
Great album overall. Not my favorite Radiohead album but still a good listen.
Happier sounding Radiohead. 4/5
4-5 stars
Bra, men trist
I had never actually listened to this album despite loving earlier Radiohead. It was very good, though not quite on par with earlier albums for me.
In 2007, Radiohead released, from what I've seen, the most highly praised album in their discography. Fusing electronic elements with ambient and twinkling guitar passages lying in the backgrounds of these tracks, Radiohead rests under a warm blanket for this influential release. Above all else though, I assume this album gets all the praise because of its comforting atmosphere. It's soft and light, and Yorke's crooning over most of these songs paints a melancholic image of a man longing for something more, in a relationship, affection, or life in general. As beautiful and enjoyable as this album is, I do find myself wanting a more punchier track at times, akin to some of Radiohead's older releases. The first two tracks certainly satisfy that desire to a certain extent (the opening "15 Step" is my favorite song on the album alongside the penultimate "Jigsaw Falling into Place"). But many of the songs feel like they're building up to something orchestric, grandiose, and cathartic, but end before reaching any such point. Also, Yorke's crooning on certain songs (like "House of Cards") is flat-out uninteresting and too similar to vocal passages I've heard on other Radiohead songs and the instrumentation isn't interesting enough to carry the entire song. Maybe that's why I like "15 Steps" so much, it's the vocals and the way Thom delivers them with such punch, vigor, and an almost restrained anger that makes the song stick out on this album. But I don't believe this album wants to build up its tracks, and that's fair; not every track needs to have a crescendo. Instead, this album is comfortable in the warm, pillowy, and spacey cacoon it built for itself and your enjoyment of this album rests on how much you're willing to let yourself float along to that. There are many gorgeous moments. When the strings come in at the end of "Reckoner", the vocal choir passages at the end of "Nude", and the entirety of the piano-driven "Videotape". Also the acoustic guitars and bass all over this album are great. "Jigsaw Falling into Place" is probably the most whole song on the album, a gorgeous art rock track with lush instrumentation and one of my favorite Yorke performances ever as he draws inspiration from the hazy environment he's in while being inebriated in a college-era night. The sense of nostalgia that drives this track's lyrical themes makes it so enjoyably melancholic. 8/10
I’ve never given Radiohead a fair shot. It’s always been fine, but I never make time to let it really draw me in. Still, this album ain’t my favorite of theirs in even my limited experience. Wikipedia tells me this is the one they released on the web, when the industry was floundering. That gets it an extra point from me. Just because it was an important moment.
I had never listened to Radiohead before, but I knew they were very popular. I really enjoyed listening. I guess this is why you listen to new music.
Standout Tracks- "Bodysnatchers," "Nude," "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," "House of Cards, "Jigsaw Falling Into Place," "Videotape" Lyrics/Vocals- 3/5 Instrumentals- 4/5 Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 4/5 First of all, I love Radiohead, and this is the first album that I have received on this list that I've already heard. Now that we've got that settled, my first listening to this album was about a year ago and I was not super impressed. It was by no means a bad album, but it just didn't stick out to me. In my listen for today, my opinion has changed slightly. I do like this album a bit more than I did originally, but some people would say this is Radiohead's best album and I have to disagree. It has some really good tracks on it, but it is a huge departure from their normal sound. At the very least it is a departure from one of their more acclaimed albums, "OK Computer." This album is a lot more experimental, but I don't have any issues with that. This album struck a different chord on my second listen, I was able to appreciate more of the production aspect and really take it all in. Thom Yorke is an amazing vocalist with hauntingly beautiful lyrics. The instrumentals feel very "dreamlike" and are very well done. The vibes are amazing, although turning on Radiohead at any kind of social function is kinda hit or miss so I'd definitely not do that for this album.
Ultimate sad boy hour soundtrack, good blend of electronic and instrumentation. “All I Need” and “Nude” stole the show for me.
Can’t believe I am only arriving at this now. It’s gorgeous and I listened a few times over the weekend. Perfect for stark, snowy weather.
House of Cards and Videotape were the most solid for me, enjoyable mellow sound overall. Prefer some of their other albums more
This was great. The music and vocals blend so well together for sound and vibe. I enjoyed this a lot to listen to. Radiohead is without a doubt a band with some chops and they are doing something here.
This is a pretty good album. Not something I would listen to a lot myself, but I think it does most things right. The lyrics are better kind of ignored and just let them be part of the cacophony.
1.19.24
Today this became my second fav radiohead album. Maybe it's the desolate feeling of winter, the despair etc, but for some reason today it really worked for me. Very very high 4
already heard it but this shit hits crazy hard with better airpods. Im feeling a strong 8 to a light 9
Someone really likes Radiohead. This too is an excellent album. But does Radiohead need two albums in the list? I would say the distinctions between the albums are not enough to warrant that for the average listener. The base test in my opinion is to queue up multiple albums by the same band and if the listener cannot tell where one ended and the next began, then one album should be all that is needed. On this album, "15 step" and "Jigsaw Falling into Place" are my two favorite songs. Would I have like to see broader experimentation? Yes, definitely. There is refinement here and change and experiment but at some point, the vocal delivery style is too fixed, the building technique too similar, the lyrics too much the same.
3.5 stars. The singing brings down otherwise creative and interesting songs. Interesting basslines, heavily layered and goes for an 'epic' sound. Standout is "Jigsaw Falling Into Place".
not my favourite radiohead album but as always worth a listen and a big vibe. insanely well produced. it took me a long time to "get" radiohead but i think i get it now.
I knew nothing about Radiohead other than having heard "Creep". For some reason I thought they were heavy metal and I was very happy to discover that they weren't! I enjoyed this album and would welcome more.
This was the first album I have been given to listen to that I actually liked. Much better than the first Radio Head album.
I liked it. I deffo will be listening to radiohead a little more for sure :)
Took me a second to get into, but once I did I really enjoyed this album, it kept getting better with each song. The last four songs, but especially Jigsaw Falling Into Place really stood out to me. Ended up listening to it a second time and liked it even more.
Excellent guitar work. A bit choppy for me however I can see why they are respected. Not necessarily my cup of tea.
- Interesting instrumentals, well executed, catchy. Great listen! - Not a big Radiohead fun, but still giving it a 4. - The opener, 15 Step, is a banger.
‚More recent‘ Radiohead. There are some breath taking songs, but the album overall is not my most favourite version of Radiohead
Skills
The final Radiohead album on this list. Whilst I understand the band are all great musicians and make complex and creative music, none of it so far has clicked with me. If I was musical myself and if I had any understanding music theory I may better appreciate what they do, but that's not the way I engage with music, nor is it how I would wish to engage with music. Too clinical and cold. What a delight it is, then, to find In Rainbows to be warmer and much less detached than the previous Radiohead albums. This one does get me on an emotional level and was therefore a much more engaging, rewarding and enjoyable listen. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Reckoner Date listened: 04/01/24
Technically perfect, beautiful drums . A tad morose.
Inte lika fängslande som andra Radiohead skivor. Häftiga ljudvärldar
Lots of higher voices and cool recording techniques. Great background album while working.
Zu kraß
Enjoyable from start to finish. Very interesting listen, Also the story of how the album came out is really cool. Not as good as The Bends but definitely great in its own right.
Really liked it. Don't know why I didn't listen when it first came out.
I like it pas mal.
Enjoyed as advertised, now to relisten with some lyric sheets
I've listened to other Radiohead albums in the past but never to any of the songs off of this one. I liked quite a few songs off of this, but Radiohead is a bit difficult for me to rate because I find that I have to be in a specific mood and setting to listen to and enjoy their songs, plus their music was a bit of an acquired taste if I'm being totally honest. So I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars.
Many remember this for the manner in which it was released ("pay what you want"), I more remember it for the first Radiohead album that came out after I was already an unabashed fan. Doesn't quite reach the heights of their preceding albums but still very, very good.
Starts great, but gets a bit repetitive. Wonderfully produced
This one is good. Changes my opinion of Radiohead a bit.
I am really really really really liking Radiohead these days. Just listened to this album a few weeks ago, still need a bunch more listens of all of their albums to get a better feeling of them all. I have a friend who is an obsessive Radiohead fan who said that In Rainbows was his favorite and a good portion of the rabid fan community seems to agree. I believe that Radiohead is the next incarnation of Pink Floyd and much of their creative direction. I liked In Rainbows a lot; nothing stood out as being smashingly good to me like on a few other Radiohead works. I really don’t think I can give this a better or more critical review without a few more listens. A solid four star that will probably get better with time.
This ones pretty good. However it felt like it faded into background music very quickly. Good background music but I dont feel like it engaged me very much. I think I will still give it 3.5 stars but its closer to 4
Listened at home while eating and playing catan
Good stuff. Radiohead never disappoints.
This is probably the best experience I've had listening to Radiohead - either i'm starting to 'understand' a bit better or this is just a really great record. Or both. Although highlights for me were House Of Cards and Bodysnatchers and they are in the lower half for Spotify play count so even when I like Radiohead I like the songs other people don't I guess haha
This album is so good and it’s still not a top 5 Radiohead album.
4/5 because if Kid A and OK Computer at 5/5 this has to be lower
4/5
Very good, bit subdued for me but very good low-key music
7/5/10
- Chill vibes while listening - Make me want to relax - Could listen to this album at night before bed
Not my fave band. Decent but too whiny for me
Good album. Jigsaw and bodysnatchers stuck out to me this listen
enjoyed the eclectic nature. I tend to enjoy this artist in general, they didn't disappoint.
twas good. Didn't pay enough attention cause was doing stuff but i enjoyed it
good
Cat: I really like this! Very creative and different AJ: my first new Radiohead album. At least the first new one I cared about. First one I was there for? It’s pretty good.
Not the best radiohead songs
quirky ass indie kids will do tricks for this album like it’s tony hawk pro skater, but they’re not wrong to do so (just know you’re annoying af)
Really nice listen! Easy to tune out and tune in
Radiohead remains a band where I need to listen to their albums a few times in order to “get” it. I preferred Kid A to this though.
Fantastic!
stand out track - Weird Fishes / Arpeggi
In Rainbows by Radiohead is a solid indie rock/ambient outing
yes
great album... but perhaps not THE greatest.
Great, Radiohead produced this disk. I remember I downloaded the version legally and free from their website. A good album, not the best Radiohead album. 3.75.
I don't really like Radiohead, so this is going to be tough. I liked 15 Step until the beat did a weird change-up. Bodysnatchers is solid the whole way through, maybe I like it because of the straightforwardness. The subtleness of the instrumentation can be cool to notice.
Groundbreaking release format. Great album to boot.
I like this album best when it doesn’t know what genre it wants to be— or, perhaps when it wants to everything all at once.
Highlights: 15 Step, House Of Cards. In a nutshell: an abstract evolution. Overall: 7/10
Have listened to this album many times before, but paid more attention to the lyrics this time. Made me feel sad and happy, a bit wistful.
Good stuff, nothing wrong with it tbh but it’s just not like my FAVORITE thing even tho I don’t rlly have any problems with it. pretty cool
Really big fan of this one. Haven't listened to a ton of Radiohead, but this one was pretty good the whole way through. Reckoner and Weird Fishes are my choice picks.
Wow this was great
Hard to describe other than musically mature, beautiful and melodic. No real “hits” but really enjoyed the interplay between the band and the layers upon layers of cool sound. Tom Yorke sounds much more grown up as an artist and didn’t mind his voice this time. I never really listened to this album back in the day and missed out.
I think this might be like the 3rd Radiohead album I've gotten. I really like this one. Nude is a great track. Weird Fishes is soooooo good!! All I Need is great too. Good album! 4 stars
Weird fishes and Reckoner <3 the rest were okay
Nice mellow
You inevitably have to compare this to what came before, and I don't love it like I do Ok Computer/Kid A/Amnesiac. For me this seemed like a revisiting of what they had already done rather than something innovative, which is why it's a 4* for me. That said, it's still Radiohead and has beautiful moments - Reckoner is a classic.
It took me a long time to warm up to Radiohead. I was aware of when they were first gaining some notoriety, but I couldn't quite crack into what Radiohead had to offer. I also remember the news about how In Rainbows was released as a pay-what-you-want online purchase, but I never heard a single track. I was pleasantly surprised with this album. The vocals were given a chance to carry more melody and not as much angst in their delivery. Radiohead has some tracks on earlier albums that leave me feeling a negative vibe. This album flowed from track to track, and I finished knowing that I could listen again to have a chance to hear what I may have missed the first time through.
I love OK Computer and early Radiohead. I struggled with this though. I listened to it twice and nothing really stood out, but I felt there were hidden depths. I don't feel it should be getting a 4-star rating on the basis that it might grow on me, but the fact I heard so much new stuff on a second listening was enough to push it from 3 to 4 stars.
I like this one.
Good fun, saved
Very good album - worth a few listens.
Love it, but not my favorite Radiohead album. Jigsaw falling into place is my favorite Radiohead song though.
Favourite tracks: reckoner; 15 steps; house of cards; all I need
Classic that just gets better
Not my favourite Radiohead album but love many songs on this album 7/10
Setting the album up for success by opening with 15 Step. Faust Arp and Reckoner are the other two I go back to a lot.
I have a general prejudice about post-melody Radiohead and I don't think I bothered listening to this much after I availed myself of their generous offer to download it for free. However, my reaction to this surprised me. Sure, they were drifting away from songs to sounds and mood scapes, and deep into prog rock, but this is an interesting album. Johnny Greenwood is a genius and I found myself quite immersed in this.
I remember the big hype around this one because you could pay whatever you wanted to get a digital copy of the album. The good old days before music distribution platforms eh? Looking back this feels like a consolidation Radiohead album where they still do the electronic experimentation but in a more standard a song structure. A best of both worlds type of Radiohead album. Highlights: Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Reckoner, Jigsaw Falling Into Place
This is fun to listen to. Hell of a lot going on, but it all comes together. Great lyrics, production is impeccable, feels completely original, fun to listen to. One of the bands greatest works. Not my favorite of theirs due to lack of range, but definitely top three. 4/5
I listened to this for another list in the last year and rated it a 3.5. Considered just re-rating it the same, but didn't wanna miss the chance to listen to Nude again, so I listened through the whole thing again. This album never fully clicked for me, after loving Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Thief. However, today it is clicking. I really enjoyed it and even though it has a cleaner sheen than the previous albums, I'm feeling it. Nude is great (duh), but so is House of Cards, 15 Step, Bodysnatchers. The songs that click less with me are still good. 4/5
These Radiohead guys are nice to listen to. I never really like any individual songs but really like the album overall. Guess that means the songs kind of run together so that would be my only criticism of it.
A brilliant concept and the instrument is amazing. Greenwood's talents writing movie scores really on display.
I'm firmly in The Bends / OK Computer era, but you have to admire a band that constantly evolves and experiments.
Beautiful, progressive, complex, intricate and at times indecipherable Radiohead. Lovely album.
7 outta 10 saved to my fav songs! *Edit* Such a great Album and its the First album i had on this list lmaooo. I had the regret of giving it a 3 Star because i didnt knew how good this album is compared to all these elvis costello albums at least lmaooo
LP
This is lovely and was a return to form after Hail to the Thief, but I still question giving one band 6 spots on this list. Regardless, this is an excellent album, if not quite as consequential as the band’s earlier work.
Really good, but not quite 5/5 for me. That might be down to the genre. But I find I can easily let it be background music, which can be nice but doesn’t say 5/5 to me. Super solid, though, and very worth listening to!
perhaps the best radiohead album? i'm giving 5's sparingly but this is 4.8
The first side feels like a trance, in a good way. Still think it is one of the best of its decade.
It's a good album; several really strong tracks, though it can feel a little monochromatic at times.
I appreciate Thom York and the gang but much like Beyoncé it isn't ever really something I choose to put on when left to my own devices. Would give it a 4.5 if I could! Hard to think of critiques or praise of this album that hasn't already been said ad nauseum. It's probably a reverse recency bias but I found myself appreciating the back half of this album more this time around
It’s Radiohead so I feel like there’s very little I can add to the conversation. As an album it’s cohesive and eerie. It’s missing the oomph to make it a 5 for me but great nonetheless. All I Need, Reckoner, Videotape are the faves. All I need
One if those albums that made me realize I like other things than just classic rock. Radiohead was weird (good) music to me growing up but now it’s just good
I own one Radiohead album and this is it. Despite being critically acclaimed, a lot of their music is esoteric and not easy to get. This is very different. Far more accessible and easy to enjoy.
I knew this album as the first major "pay what you want" album but had never actuall heard the music before. It is sonically impressive and though it was released in 2007 still sounds futuristic. A really interesting blend of technology and human elements that made me feel like this is the kind of stuff the Beatles might be doing if they were making music in the 21st century. The basslines were fantastic and the guitar parts had really nice texture. As I typed that previous sentence I realize what a massive compliment I just gave Radiohead and that I must give this album a high score. However, I do wish the melodies were stronger, some of these songs felt too atmospheric and not enough like "songs" which would not have happened on a Beatles record. I do think melodies are really imporatant ot what I look for so that was the disappointmnet for me. A great album that felt a bit too much like work to listen through. Would do a 4.5 if possible.
I remember being underwhelmed with this album when I first heard it, and wrote off 'latter years Radiohead' in general, but actually it's been really nice to re-visit this. First off I think the production on this is sublime. There's so many interesting layers to the songs, lots of variation in tempo and style, and just a very consistent mood sitting underneath the whole thing. It's definitely a whole album experience, I don't think I would dip into any of these songs individually from here.
Not in love with Thom Yorke's singing voice. I do really love the guitar, bass, and drums though. I bet you could convince people that Weird Fishes / Arpeggi is a U2 song. Regardless, it is a certified jam. All I Need is another certified jam. Love the entire crescendo at the end especially drums and keyboard. Videotape is a great way to end this album. It's unsettling in a good way. I definitely grew to appreciate Thom Yorke's falsetto more as another instrument in the whole ensemble as the album went on. The technical skill and variety of the guitar and drums are what really stood out to me. This album was good, but does not inspire me to get a silly mouse tattoo. I wonder if this is the latest album that will be on this list.
Absolute banger. I don't even really like radiohead but In Rainbows is a special album. Videotape and Last Flowers are my favorite (I listened to the 2 disc version)
Not their best album but it's a lot closer to the top then I remember! Starts off with two absolute bangers!
There are a few Radiohead albums on this list, and I'll be keeping an eye out for them. Never listened to them before - I get it now.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: I really did enjoy it, very raw and powerful with the use of experimental sound and extended vocals in parts (gonna have to revisit this one) Favourite song: Track 7 - Reckoner
best: house of cards worst: faust arp overrated: weird fishes/arpeggi underrated: videotape Overall: 4.2/5
Radiohead is as always great. They're experimental but not too much, artsy but not in an annoying way and uses electronic instruments in moderation. As usual the words in Thom Yorke's singing is hard to understand at times but it doesn't matter that much (c'mon, I listen to death metal with death growling). In Rainbows is not Radioheads best album in my opinion but it's still a great album. Songs like Bodysnatcher, Reckoner and Jigsaw Falling into Place are all songs I go back and listen to from time to time.
Still a very good album
I've never gotten super into Radiohead but I have been impressed by what they do and I enjoyed this album. Hopefully I will get more from this artist soon 4/5
Radioheads second best album? It’s a tough one to call as we all know that their discography is second to none. This album is melodic, calm and also exciting. It’s not OK Computer (but then, what is?) and that will put some people off. This is an excellent album from start to finish and I’ll never tire of hearing it. Truly exceptional.
Incredibly classic and regarded by many as one of greatest of all time. I don’t love all the way through like I do some but so many good ones.
I've come to like this album over the years, but never have really enjoyed it. That being said, its good. I think Faust arp is my favorite song on the thing. Give me OK computer, the Bends, or Pablo honey any day.
this album kind of loses me in the middle. I've always really liked jigsaw falling into place, some other goodies as well
As I get older, my relationship with Radiohead complicates. For the longest time I dismissed them as too sad, but as my appreciation for music and music theory develops its hard to ignore their commitment to write music thats developing ideas and genres. So, 4 stars - Nude and Weird Fishes are great, I don't quite get the rest yet but it seems to me that some day I might.
Radiohead in its whole glory.
It’s the best Radiohead has to offer
Good album
I really enjoy the weird vibes that Radiohead gives me. They always put me in this place somewhere in-between. I love the guitar, and the way the songs have you kind of floating into space. The eerie vocals double down on their strangeness and bring me to edge of some abyss, I'm asking for more. I've always been a fan of this odd music, and in rainbows reminds me that I haven't listened to enough recently. 20/15 bananas.
It's Radiohead. 4 stars
Need to give these guys more listens. Never loved any of their songs really but have never hated any either.
Nude - Soooo goood. The kind of song that make you feel something inside, changes your mood entirely. Outstanding vocal Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - My friend recommended this song to me before. Good music to listen to, but I dont know what this song is about. All I Need - I used to listen to this a lot. Faust Arp - This might be the best one so far. I am not sure why didnt I give a lot of love for this album before. This is actually really freakin good 4.2/5
Another case of multiple listens matters.
One of their best!
Never gave this one the proper time it undoubtedly deserves. This is partially due to my confusion over how to react to the initial release format. I kind of stalled out and just ended up listening to other people's copies/downloads instead of getting my own. I do recall listening to it on a particularly memorable road trip, but it's the trip itself that I remember, not the music. It just didn't grab me in the same way as their earlier material had. Listening to it now, it's basically like listening to a brand new album. I have no real memory of any of these songs. I do like it, there's plenty that I like here, but I guess that's simply the nature of one's relationship to any great band or artist that manages to last long enough; you eventually find a point of where you simply begin to drift a bit further away. Not to say that you won't drift back again at some point. This was a transitional time both in music and in my life. The music industry was trying to figure out how to better integrate with digital downloading and this album was a big step. A step that sort of overshadowed the actual music for me. As far as my life was concerned, I had just come off a major breakup and was starting my relationship with Janie. It was a rollercoaster ride, especially at first, but I was largely in a stage of a renewed optimism and infatuation. I didn't have much room for Thom Yorke's cryptic existential doom musings. It just wasn't the right backdrop for me at the time. Listening to it now though, there still does seem to be something missing from this album when I compare it to their earlier work (which might be unfair). Like I said, there's plenty I like here, but its more a matter of what I feel is a lack of cohesiveness overall. I definitely have a strong preference for Side A. But Side B, from "Faust Arp" on, it just sort of loses it's momentum and can't seem to recover from that stark tone shift. It could also simply be that I am somewhat desensitized to their sound by this point - having built up a tolerance of sorts.
Kind of had this on in the background and it made for quite relaxing working music, when I did pay more attention to it I could definitely appreciate the interesting sounds so will come back to this one again if I find myself wanting to listen to something a bit different
Best Song: Weird Fishes/Arpeggi. That guitar work is beautiful. It really feels like it takes up all the space in your brain. Worst Song: Nude. Aptly titled, as Yorke's voice is laid a bit too bare here, and with nothing to hide behind it sounds extra warbly. Overall: Compelling, clearly "indie" music that always feels crunchy and unique. I really like how much is going on in each track, which gives an intoxicating sense of complexity to the whole album. Probably the most I've liked Radiohead.
Great Radiohead Album, just not The Bends
Really enjoyable, less paranoid spaceman, beautiful vocals, great musicianship. Radiohead I will be exploring you more now
"In Rainbows" is the seventh studio album by English rock band Radiohead. The album was eventually produced by Nigel Godrich after Spike Spent didn't work. The band used conventional rock instruments plus electronic instruments, strings, piano and the ondes Martenot. The lyrics were less political than previous albums. As lead singer Thom Yorke described them: " an anonymous fear thing, like sitting in traffic thinking you should be doing something else." I've been there. The band limited the album to under 45 minutes (actually 42). That's a good thing. The album was famous for being self-released, a pay-what-you-want download. I remember that. It also won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. "15 Step" starts the album with a hanclap rhythm inspired by Peaches "Fuck the Pain." Guitar coming in. Organ keeping the background music. Frustration about not being able to break pattern. Thom Yorke said "Bodysnatchers" was based on Wolfmother, Neu! And dodgy hippie rock. A underlying grinding guitar. Layered guitars. Eerie keys. More hand clapping. Cool song. The second single "Nude" was actually their first single since "Creep" to make the Billboard Top 40. Just a drum beat, strings and a slow guitar progression. Majestic ending. Can't change the world around you. "All I Need" ends Side One and is also one of my favorite Radiohead songs. Guitar, glockenspiel. About unrequited love. The piano picks up the pace and the songs ends in chaos. Johnny Greenwood had the string section play every note of on the scale and blanket the frequencies trying to create white noise. The quality does not step down on side two. "Rekoner" has clanging percussion, meandering guitar, piano, strings and Yorke in falsetto. Life doesn't last forever. "House of Cards" is softer with a plodding guitar, strings and Yorke now wailing. People leaving unstable marriages to be with each other. The first single was "Jigsaw Falling into Place." A quicker beat. Guitar led. I think about the impossibility of finding someone of significance when you go out drinking. Yorke did say it was based on the chaos of drinking. "In Rainbows" has a few of my favorite Radiohead songs. I also feel this album really has no filler; every song fits and is worth a listen. I think their album goal of 45 minute worked. It's difficult for me to rank Radiohead but this would be in upper half.
OK Computer.
Rock indie
Good but it was too depressing for my depressed monday mood
Pas mal!
I wish Radiohead made a long-lasting impression on me with an album that wasn't OK Computer.
I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. Long notes and smooth voice, perfect music for a rainy afternoon where you want to lean into the coziness of the weather without being bogged down by it.
Pretty (in Radiohead terms) and less rock than might have been assumed from hearing Bodysnatchers. A really good all round Radiohead album.
This album is lauded but for me it feels like Radiohead light. It's held up to be as good as OK Computer and Kid A but it isn't. It's more Amnesiac level. It's just a tad too subdued for me and it's following the Radiohead formula at this point - Dadist style lyrics, occasional glitchy electronics but nothing too scary and some guitar drizzled over the tracks. Great if it was someone else but only really good for this band. Best Tracks: Bodysnatchers; Weird Fishes/Arpeggi; Jigsaw Falling Into Place
This was close to a five.
Right? Should listen again
Apparently (per Wikipedia), Andy Kellman of AllMusic wrote that In Rainbows "will hopefully be remembered as Radiohead's most stimulating synthesis of accessible songs and abstract sounds, rather than their first pick-your-price download". I haven't listened to most of their albums, but I'm inclined to agree.
It’s not what I expected that’s for sure. It’s a very thoughtful and intimate album. Will be listening to again.
