Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Though there is nothing country about this, but it is decent Sheryl Crow type pop.

country, zum glück mit einflüssen von pop und elektronischer musik - für einmal nicht altbacken, sondern hörbar. schöne stimme.

Netter moderner Country. Aber was ist Unterschied zu Pop?

Actually decent country

It's interesting how her sound shifted through the span of this album. It started out so completely Country/ Singer Songwriter and shifted towards a more Pop sound. She's clearly talented, and I can see why she's popular enough for me to have previously heard of her without being a fan of her genres. I'd say this could be an easily accessible album for anyone who wanted to dabble in Country music but otherwise isn't a fan of contemporary Country.

The first couple of tracks promise a surprisingly listenable Pop country album. Kacey has a wonderful sound and isn't afraid to explore different musical genres. That said, they all somehow sound the same. Slow Burn was really good, Mother was a decently put together tear-jerkier. High Horse got off to a good start, then decided to be humdrum. Rainbow has the beginnings of a sad story, but you can hardly hear any human pain or emotion in Kacey's pretty voice. A very sadly missed opportunity.

Well executed but not anything special

Pop, voice ok.

This was nice but had a bit too much country twang for me.

I hate country so based on my enjoyment I would give it a 1, but there were far worse albums on this list, so it would be too harsh

Good. Personally not something I would intentionally listen to again.

Great voice! I liked the country stuff the most, never been a fan of easy listening.

En ole oikein lämmennyt nyky kantrille, mutta ihan heleältä kuulosti. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Feared the worst when I looked up Kacey Musgraves and saw she did country. That said, this is more of a pop album with the taint of country looming large. Oh What A World was really good, on balance the songs were more good than bad, but some of the lyrics were godawful.

Not holding much hope for this from the description and reviews, but let’s see… I will copy another reviewers pasted lyrics to capture the quality - “Texas is hot, I can be cold, grandma cried when I pierced my nose” 🙄 Very basic and inoffensive. Cringe lyrics and contrived feels and depth. I don’t say this about many albums but this one I really can’t see why it’s here. Plenty of people that do this style and feel much better. Lyrics really are embarrassing. Like year 6 poetry class. I’ll give it my 3* which means it does its genre okay, not my thing and not offensively bad. Done after track 4

Perfectly pleasant, if inconsequential, country pop.

This is a great album - enjoyed and is not my usual sound

I liked this more than I was expecting. The production is great, it sounds very different than what I expect modern country to sound like. But, I didn’t really care for the lyrics at all. I can’t see myself singing along to these songs. High 3.

Going from the downward spiral to this is kinda funny. This was pretty uninteresting and I don’t think it should be on the list, but it’s a fine listen so It gets a 3

A decent album. Maybe would've enjoyed more 4 years ago

Enjoyed this one. She's a great songwriter. Highlights: "Slow Burn" and "Love is a Wild Thing"

Not bad, but too poppy

I could maybe give this a 3.5, but I just think this is "good." She rips off a lot of great stuff (mainly Sufjan Stevens), and I think her music probably accomplishes her goal of mixing indie folk with pop country, but I find her voice rather plain, and the music doesn't explore enough new ideas or do anything else in a fun enough way for me. However, I could see myself listening to her Christmas album and wouldn't be upset if my daughter got into Musgraves' music instead of many other pop artists out there...

bad day for it because this was putting me to sleep at work. decent tunes and pretty voice though

Perfectly pleasant pop ballads with a country flavour. She's got a lovely voice and there's some nice melodies in there. I think there's enough variance in the songs, and enough hooks and whatnot to keep you interested. It works well as a pop package, but I'm really struggling to see how this can be elevated beyond that. There's nothing profound here. The lyrics are genuinely woeful, just so basic and surface-layer. There's nothing wrong with that for what it is, and there's nothing wrong with enjoying this as a favourite album.. but this really shouldn't be up there with the very best albums of all time in my opinion. You need to have something a BIT more.

Pretty good country/pop

Good but I think it’s overrated. It’s a pleasant listen but nothing really stands out. I don’t remember much on the next day. But overall still good, very good production, and good arrangement, and good voice. It’s like the anime demon slayer. Many people love it. It has the best CGI, amazing bgm, huge production, burnt tons of money. But the core storyline is fairly mediocre.

a very pleasant listening experience. i don't think a ton really stood out to me, but i enjoyed having it on during the work day. could see myself maybe throwing this on for a road trip, but otherwise i don't see myself going back to it a ton

I definitely enjoyed the second half of the album more than the first, and that’s because of the different genres blended with country. I think Kacey Musgraves has a great voice and I was reminded of Norah Jones more than a few times. The biggest drawback of this album is the few times there’s predictable rhymes in the lyrics it really stands out and I find it hard to take the next little bit of the song seriously.

Far more interesting than one would think. It's better than most other pop country. Ultimately, not my cup of tea, but I can see why folks like this one.

A fun exploration of blending multiple more contemporary genres with modern country. I’m not the biggest fan of modern country, but this album still had some nice offerings.

Blah. She’s got a good voice but it just doesn’t do much for me. Nothing offensive enough to abandon the listen but nothing that compels me to listen further either. Standard faire pop country.

So this started quite nicely - quite over produced pop country. Lost it's way midway through and basically became pretty straight pop towards the end with High Horse being one of the better songs from the second half. Frankly I found it more memorable and catchy than the Taylor Swift offerings we've had so far but it was otherwise nice but quite average.

This was alright. Felt more pop than country, which is likely a good thing for me. I'm not overly familiar with the genre so it's not surprising that could hear some similarities between this and some of the Taylor swift stuff I've heard, but this was all of the softer, less exciting, nature. A few of the ambient sounded reminded me of soft pop of the 90s, like savage garden or that ilk. I'm not blown away, I won't be seeking out more, but I didn't dislike it.

Surprisingly good. While I might not be a fan of her voice it fits the narrative and melody within the songs.

It was fine, didn't click with me personally

Not bad, not familiar.

Discovered this site today. Country isn't really my thing, so it was a interesting start! The songs are chill and her voice is lovely, it fits a end-of-summer-afternoon kind of mood. "Slow Burn" is a cool song. But that's it, none of the songs reeeeally stood out to me. After the first 3 or 4 songs, they all started to sound kind of the same.

I always appreciate seeing something in this collection released in the past decade (as of 2025), but I'll admit that these selections feel even more arbitrary than earlier albums that presumably have stood the test of time. I enjoyed this album, as well as the nominal foray into country-esque music (a major shortcoming of this collection), but I also don't feel like Musgraves' music is all that distinctive or memorable, and verges on too saccharine on this album. My favorites are probably the opening "Slow burn", the pop-oriented "Butterflies", and the more subdued "Space cowboy". But it was hard to escape the feeling that I was listening to some Hallmark Channel movie soundtrack (despite that Musgraves apparently took LSD for the inspiration for "Slow burn" and "Mother").

i'm not a huge fan of hers, but have heard a bit of her music through osmosis with people in my life. i think her music can be quite charming, but ends up not being quite my thing. i like her voice, which has a certain sweetness to it, but sometimes her songs fall flat for me. on a scale, i would say this is a light 'good' to me, solid but somewhat uninteresting.

I mean, this is an okay album! Aside from the hits, not much else stands out to me. I struggle to enjoy albums where a majority of the songs are lowkey and emotional. The album is not life-changing by any means, but is a good album to listen to if you like chill country/pop songs about love.

Admitting that he dumbed down his music for a wider appeal, Jay Z famously rapped “Truthfully, I want to rap like Common Sense/But I did 5 Mil/I ain’t been rappin like Commin since” I think Kacey Musgraves is Taylor Swift’s Common. Proof that pop-country doesn’t have to suck if you have a talented songwriter, this album is mostly good. It gets a little cheesy at times (you can have your space……cowboy) but pretty solid for the most part. I think “slow burn” was my favourite.

Nothing to write home about, its a pleasant enough listen but not quite getting what the significance behind it might be

Hmmm!... Not quite country, not quite pop, and the result is rather bland. I imagine this is what an album created and performed by AI might sound like. In fact, I don't have to imagine, because the other day my friend generated a song using AI, and the style was very much like the songs on this album. All very nice, but instantly forgettable. I certainly don't understand the significance of this album that makes it a must-listen, but I'll give it three stars because I would have no problem listening to it again... and forgetting it all over again.

Not for me

lovely voice. elements of pop, folk, electronica all swirled together. very eclectic.

Rating: 5.5/10 It’s got a certain charm to it, a lot of it is pretty pedestrian though.

Gave it a couple listens, didn't mind it but I don't think St.Peter will be allowing her entry to my girl-pop pantheon any time soon.

1. Slow Burn - 7 Instrumentally and vocally very strong. Lyrically very forced and random at times. Still a very good and enjoyable track. 2. Lonely Weekend - 6 Instrumentally very good but lyrically extremely repetitive. Very much a good track that felt like it could be a lot more if the title line was just repeated for two minutes. 3. Butterflies - 9 Brilliant country song. Absolutely awesome from the sound to the vocals to the lyrics. Superb track. 4. Oh, What A World - 7 The autotone part is the only thing keeping this song from a ten. It's very good and really inspiring otherwise. 5. Mother - 4 It's a pretty stale slow song. 6. Love Is A Wild Thing - 10 Brilliant track. Excellent lyrics and a brilliant sound make this song absolutely fantastic. Musgraves does have an amazing voice for a track like this too. Simply superb. 7. Space Cowboy - 7 Standard country song. Some really fantastic lyrics on this track. It's good. 8. Happy & Sad - 8 Brilliant country track. I don't usually like an upshift in octave through the bridge, I usually like a guitar solo or a more mellow bridge. This and Space Cowboy both have that upshift and which I don't necessarily enjoy it in Space Cowboy, it works really well here with the lyrics that guide it the whole way. 9. Velvet Elvis - 5 Drums are really good but it feels like the guitar is being suffocated on this track and lyrcially it's no where near the other stuff on the album. 10. Wonder Woman - 6 It's a good track. It's nothing phenomenal but it's well written and enjoyable. 11. High Horse - 6 Not so much a country song as it is a pop song but overall it's not a bad track. 12. Golden Hour - 4 It's okay. It's not really a great track. Feel lyrically very forced. Insturmentally it's good. 13. Rainbow - 10 Brilliant slow song. Really enjoyable love song. Fantastic way to end the album. Average Rating: 6.85 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 3.42 Rounded Down: 3 Stars

Def a vibe. A couple of the songs were extra enjoyable but in general I couldn’t distinguish one from the other. I might throw this on in the background but nothing more

Eh, middle of the road, boring country

#734. The description of this says country, but it surely isn't that. This is pop music in the same category as Natasha Bedingfield or Norah Jones. It's fine as far as easy listening pop music goes, I guess. 3/5: acceptable

Franchement je m'attendais à détester et j'ai trouvé ça cool

12/10/2025 Surprisingly I had never heard of her. This was okay, can't imagine I would give it another listen. Spotify listeners: 17 million

This is too much in the pop realm for me. I would have prefered a more straight up country record. 3.5 stars

I thought this was a pretty good album. My main beef with it is probably that it leans too far into pop a lot of the time -- there's like a pop sheen that I don't think needs to be there, and somewhat related is I find Kacey's vocal delivery kind of off-putting at times. It's like she's trying to walk the line between country and pop and it comes off kind of weird on some of the songs. Still, there's a number of good, catchy songs on here, including "Slow Burn", "Butterflies", and the highlight for me, "Rainbow". 3.5 stars.

what a lovely record. such a pleasant listen

This album goes down easy. Couldn't be more appropriately named. But essential? Maybe in the way a perfectly broken in warm blanket is essential on a cool fall night.

Not too bad. Doesn't really sound like the pop country out now

Ah yes, her honeymoon record. This album was a big deal around when I really had my finger on the proverbial pulse, so it’s strange to realize I hadn’t listened to it in full. Seven years late is better than never I suppose. She has a lovely, classic-yet-contemporary country voice and her writing is usually strong. Production is understated but not undercooked. Too bad about the marriage itself I guess, but what it's a good record.

Quite a pleasant surprise. Like a nice summer breeze that cools you off but is also carrying just the slightest whiff of manure or fermenting silage. But just the slightest.

Gentle country

A singer songwriter, nominally country, inoffensive unlike many vocalists in the genre who are primarily annoying, but also nothing really memorable on here either.

Not my vibe, but very nice, if I were to listen to country this is what I would listen to

Was expecting to dislike this, but actually it's quite a pretty album! Will probably give it another spin in the future.

Listening to the first song I expected this to be a straight forward modern country album, not knowing anything about Kacey Musgraves. I was surprised by just how pop-y the following tracks were, though despite a heap of production I still ended up liking most of the tracks. I don't know how often I would come back to this, but I would be curious to try out more of Kacey's albums. 3.4/5

Too pop, not enough (classic) country, but still decent. Nice voice.

Warm and cozy, an optimistic burst of pure high spec pop country production informed by 2 decades of rustic acoustic indie singer songwriters. Tasteful songs cleverly adding new shades while still coloring comfortably within the traditional lines. Distinctive melodic phrasing. Lush arrangements bringing in soaring slides, dabbling in electronic sounds, and leaning heavily into rich orchestration.

Surprised, but just not for me and generally a little boring

Pretty good. Very chillded

short and solid

Mid country pop album. I can see the appeal but not for me.

What’s most impressive about this is that it was released nearly 8 years ago and has since become a bit of a modern country ‘classic’, appearing in this list of course but also on many music publications’ decade-end lists, including that one high-profile Apple music all time list. The music itself isn’t half bad either. I’ve noted before with Willie Nelson that whilst proper bare-bones country or ‘country pop’ isn’t something I seek out to listen, when I do it’s always very lovely. This is no exception, and its increased scope via the pop angle does it many favours. There’s plenty of writers credited here, which you may be surprised at given a lot of the songs’ seemingly juvenile lyrical content. Making up for that though is the songs that have both great lyrics alongside great sounds (Slow Burn, Mother, Happy & Sad) and the standout song whose lyrics you’ve heard a thousand times before, but never in this countrified, blended form of pure homeliness, Love Is a Wild Thing. Golden Hour got all of its critical and listener praise because of both its accessibility and its thought-out musicianship. It’ll convert most anybody to revel in its lush, darn tootin’ sound.

I've heard some of these songs in the background of life at the time, she was very popular. Enjoyed most of these songs, well produced and she has a nice voice. Some creative use of vocoder as well. Wikipedia tells me she's "woke" compared to most contemporary country singers, I appreciate that. I really like the song with the vocoder on the chorus. I'll give this three stars but probably wouldn't go back to this unless I had someone visiting that liked country and I wanted to appease their tastes while not subjecting myself to Morgan Wallen or some other crap

Slow Burn is great and the rest of the record never gets back there.

I enjoyed the change of pace on this album. Although, and not trying to be rude, it felt like a generic late 20teens 2020s country pop album. However some good songs on the album, well put together with great vocals and I personally enjoy the country zeitgeist. But max it can score for me is 3

This was fine but not my favorite. Good voice though

It's fine, not for me

Размеренный нежный альбом. Поп-музыка и кантри, плавные мелодии.

Good album, albeit a little too radio friendly for my liking.

Fair. Great voice, not a lot of memorable tunes.

I had very low expectations for this, but was pleasantly surprised by enjoying it. Some of the lyrics weren't great and I enjoyed some tracks a lot more than others, but all in all a good album. Country pop is definitely not my usual thing but this was decent.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or the album. After listening, I can see the appeal. She has a nice voice and the production seems to be top notch. I wouldn't mind listening to this again, but probably wouldn't seek it out either.

“When I say Yee you say Haw. I DIDN’T SAY FUCKIN YEE!”

For a “country pop” album that I definitely thought I was going to hate… I didn’t hate it. It was nice, it was calming, never really thought about skipping any songs.

She has a good voice, album was okay, this music is not my cup of tea.

Solid album, not really my style of music but it was ok.

Very generic white girl music. Not terrible but not exactly exciting.

Country twinged pop music with a slightly dreamy atmosphere. Nothing bad here at all, but it's fairly forgettable. Kacey's voice is nice and some of the instrumentals are good but it's laegely by the numbers songwriting

Pretty good country

started strong and lost steam by the end but some nice tunes

Ja, hva skal man si om dette da. Er jo ålreit å høre PÅ. Men når man hører ETTER så er det ganske tynt. Etter Life Is But A Dream kan jeg like når autotune brukes overdrevent med vilje. Mener bruken her var god og riktig. Trekker dessverre ikke nok opp for resten.

Enjoyed this album nice and chilled with a great vocalist 7/10

This is very pleasant inoffensive pop country music. Not bad by any means.

Nothing against Kacey Musgraves; I've always liked her, but there'd better be a lot of other female country artists yet to come on this list. Because there are some serious powerhouses I'd add long before I added anything by Kacey Musgraves. Overall, this album was fine. The word that kept coming to mind was "quaint". Not "memorable" or "important" or "unique" or "ambitious" or even "interesting"… just … "quaint". 3/5 Highlights: Slow Burn Rainbow

not much of a country fan. but it was pretty basic, same as back from work ride with my boss that day.

Country feel. Good vocals

Indie country. Way better than pop country. Enjoyed this as much as I could given the genre.

type album that imma performatively act like i enjoy to impress white shordies

3.5 Lana Del Rey really is maybe the most influential artist of her generation. There’s a version of her for every genre basically, and this is her+country+a touch of disco. I’ve heard good things about this album since it came out so I was very excited to finally have an excuse to listen to it, and…it’s fine! At no point did it get tiresome or bad, but it’s also kinda one note and just, well, fine. I remember High Horse was on a playlist for work back in 2019, and tbh, that’s kinda appropriate to me. It’s the type of music that’d you hear on a playlist at work, but the good kind that stands out among the rest of the dreck. But still, ultimately, it’s music that plays at work.

Country Rock from someone I've never heard of but apparently it was quite a hit on both sides of the pond. I quite liked the album and my favourite tracks on the album are the opening track "Slow Burn" and "Space Cowboy".

A really good pop/country album form a new artist to me. I was surprised that there weren't more songs with a more upbeat tempo. Its all very slow paced but it fits her singing well.

Thought I would hate this, but it’s pretty good!

Þetta var frekar ljúf plata sem ég mun vonandi hlusta oftar á. Fín til dæmis sem bakgrunnur í matarboði eða bara yfir daginn. Ekkert sérstakt sem stendur upp úr samt þannig að hún dettur úr þremur og hálfri niður í þrjár

Not a fan of contemporary country music, I was positively surprised. It is a good 3, sometimes a bit bland, but overall a nice listen.

A surprisingly fun album I don’t think I’ll listen to again. Most certainly me, not Ms Musgrave. It’s a very well put together album that, sadly, doesn’t trigger any emotional responses in me.

Oh boy, the "I like all kinds of music except rap and country" bros are out in full effect for this album. Hello there worst people in existence. Keep being terrible I guess. https://thehardtimes.net/blog/like-everything-except-rap-country-poor-people/ I like this album. I own this album. I think this is a good album. I like listening to it. I do not think that this is one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die. Still, reading what the rest of you think about it makes me like it more out of spite. Or not spite really. More, "Oh God, I don't ever want to be like those people in the slightest." So yeah, good album. Not great, but good.

Lovely voice.

She's pretty good and apparently this album crushed it with the Grammy's but it feels a bit too radio country for my tastes. There are so many better, less known female singer/songwriter country musicians. 2.5 rounding up

Didn't think it was spectacular but it was good, and maybe it'll grow on me. Some very pretty songs. Hard to overcome recency bias but it was a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

non-threatening pop

It's very pretty sounding, homestead, country pop dappled in sunshine. It's very pleasant to listen to but the melodies are samey, so ultimately it works best as generic background music.

Like flowers in a corn field.

It was okay, she had a good voice

Safe and inoffensive with pretty on-the-nose lyrics. Checks all the boxes for a modern pop country type of album, but at least she has a nice voice

catchy, if a little predictable

So hard to like a country album, but she isn't bad.

Favorite songs: "Oh, What a World", Butterflies, Slow Burn, Rainbow Least favorite songs: Mother 3/5

Kas: poppia, jonka tekijät ovat oikeasti kiinnostuneet melodioista. B-puolen filleriytymistä lukuun ottamatta musiikki on kuunneltavaa ja uudelleenkuunneltavaa ja silloin tällöin kylmiä väreitä herättävää. Karmea tuotanto tosin. Ah, Nashville 2018. 3,5

Lyder lidt som tidlig Taylor Swift? Lyder vældig godt, lidt samey i længden

A few good songs on here that I listened to when it originally came out. Nothing mind blowing though.

surprisingly easy to listen to

Enjoyed some of the songs but probably wouldn’t listen to it through as an album again. I preferred the middle of the album to the first and last few tracks. Definitely liked the more upbeat songs, but the slower songs could grow on me if I listened more. Fav song: Butterflies (not sure if this is actually my fave but it’s where the album picked up for me and I started to enjoy it)

I mean not a bad album but Not Quitte a modern classic like some of the others on here. Slightly bland to me Specific rating - 3.5 Fav song - space cowboy Least fav- Wonder Woman

Found it a bit boring on my first listen but it grew on me as the album progressed and when I went back to listen to the first few songs again (to pick a least favourite) I found that they weren't as boring as when I first heard them. Maybe if I listened through a third time I would really love it... but I haven't and I don't. Favourite: Velvet Elvis or Golden Hour Least: Mother

Better than I expected that’s for sure. Slick enough that I can’t see really getting into it, but this felt like a pretty natural extension of the earlier Country Ladies on the list so far. That’s the part I didn’t expect! Rounding up here because I appreciated being kinda wrong about my prejudice when I saw and recognized the name of the artist.

First track was really promising, but after 2-3 songs they started to bleed together. Production is crisp, maybe even a little too crisp... I think 3 stars

Cheesy and boring

this is more indie pop and a bit better than usual country but still a 3/5

Country pop is pretty low on my preferred genres list, but this was tolerable.

To believe music needs to have meaningful, deep, poetic lyrics to be considered worthy is incredibly limiting. Is this kind of generic? Yeah. Are the lyrics simple and maybe not the greatest? Sure. That doesn't make it BAD. It's decent poppy feel good music that you can slap on in the background while you wash the dishes. Mother is beautiful, Slow Burn isn't lyrically strong but still a good song, Love is a Wild Thing is cute, High Horse is fun if you've ever known someone who believes they're king shit. Pop is fun, no matter the sub genre.

Always like the voice some nice tunes.

This is not really my type of music, but it's not bad. 3/5.

Soothing, Norah Jones-esque

Moet ik nog een keer fatsoenlijk luisteren, maar klinkt nog niet heel interessant

This is a fine album - I don't /love/ country, but the pop on this record is pretty good. I felt like it was missing something, then as soon as it ended 'Solar Power' by Lorde came on and I think I realised that Golden Hour just doesn't have the same character that we've become accustomed to. Perhaps Kacey walked so that Lorde could run.

I was surprised by this. Not something I’ll likely come back to, but the production on this has kinda that indie sound to it, and it’s not so country that I feel like I need to be doused in bud light and draped in an American flag, so its got a leg up there.

Interest level: 2/5 Rating: 3/5, just to be fair Note to self: check back in five years to see if this album is still on the list.

Pop relajantes romántico, pero no meloso

Blind album, know the artist. It was alright for the most part and I only really liked the opening and closing tracks. I could see how this album was so big as I remember it getting awards and such, but I don't think I'm the target audience for this and I did not feel that this was meant for me. Good album, not for me, and that is okay.

Inoffensive country/soft listening album with some easy to digest acoustic strumming patterns. It is a bit corny, but pretty alright. I wouldn't mind someone putting this on in the car, but it is not an album that I would put on myself. Especially the rhythms in this album are very strong, super consistent and interesting to listen to. This goes for the guitar and the drums which both mainly act as the backing track. Stand outs: Butterflies - Super cool mixing of different patterns and rhythmic instruments to create song that just sounds really large. Love is Wild - Great example of amazing acoustic guitar playing, you can clearly hear a strummed picked pattern which allows someone to play both lead and backing at the same time. It gives a of texture to the player. The Banjo in the background doing a more lead-y riffs is also just really nice Space Cowboy - just a really fun and clever hook that I like. I also want to have a space cowboy

Nothing super groundbreaking but still a really nice listen.

Enjoyable bubblegum country tuned that flits between cutesy pop songs and heartfelt acoustic ballads. I enjoyed this more than i care to admit. The song ‘Mother’ got me choked up.

scho vill vo de kacey musgraves ghört aber sie selber nonie trotz liechter skepsis hani probiert mit eme offene ohr und ere offene seel mich dere gschicht hii z‘gäh & mis fazit isch: de pop-generikumshammer hed dominiert aber ah vereinzelte stelle hed sie mich positiv überrascht und sogar fast scho emotional berüehrt darum: kacey musglaub 3 sterne gäh

I know of Kacey Musgraves from her tour and work with Keith Urban, and I've listened to this album once before in 2019, but I don't really remember it. Slow Burn is such a great song! I've added it to my list of favourites. Actually it's my 4th time spinning it and I don’t recall the previous times, but I really took notice of it this time. The rest of the album was good quality but it didn't reach the same heights as Slow Burn. A high 3 overall.

this album was huge when it came out, so i was expecting a little more from it, but i’m not a country fan to begin with. regardless, it’s a fun album and kacey’s personality really shines through! need to queen out with her.

I have never heard Kacey Musgraves before, and after the first song I thought, wow, I really like this! But then the album took a turn and went from folky to poppy. It vacillated from there, but I heard very little that would make me think that this was a country record. Highlights: Slow Burn, Oh What a Word (in spite of its cheesy introduction), Mother, and Rainbow. The few songs that I liked, I really liked, but the rest was too poppy for me. This one averages out to a three.

This album walks a tightrope. Sometimes it treads with great poise, combining thoughtful lyrics, understated production and pop hooks that evoke fragrant summer evenings. Other times it threatens to teeter into a pit of generic modern country music that sounds hella bland.

Country pop. Meh. The vocal processing in her voice is not TOO bad, but there's no distinctiveness in her voice from others. I liked some of the lyrics, and the songs were a bit of a wide variety. I didn't get the "yacht rock" style they said were one or two of the songs. I guess my question is "why this album?" It does have some ideas of blending styles, but it's so... middle of the road. It's just not that memorable for me. Not bad, but not memorable. A high 2, which rounds to a 3. Top tracks: "Slow Burn", "Velvet Elvis," "Rainbow"

Kacey Musgraves has a sweet, beautiful voice. She reminds me of Lana Del Rey (and I now love Lana Del Rey) though her lyrics aren't dark. Sad at times but not dark. I like her lyrics - at times a little bubblegum but other times she pushes the envelope with wordplay, irony, introspection, and depth. And it's often those times where she pairs the lyrics with some nice stripped-down instrumentals. Slow Burn, Mother, Space Cowboy, and Rainbow are real gems. The last one in particular is just beautiful - great message filled with hope. Love is a Wild Thing isn't too shabby and Velvet Elvis is fun. Lonely Weekend and Butterflies are decent but a little too poppy. Oh What a World is trash - way too poppy (get rid of that vocoder). High Horse is also trending in the trashy direction. Her pop country sound makes her sound like a Taylor Swift knockoff. Taylor Swift is an incredible artist but being a knockoff is not a good look. Kacey Musgraves is talented and I enjoyed this album more than I didn't. For a modern country artist she is refreshing and thankfully nothing like bro country. She brings a perspective with substance. But I think if she embraced traditional country musical stylings a little more and didn't replace them with pop pandering, I'd like this album even more. It is a strong 3 but not quite a 3.5 for me. Still, it has me curious to listen to her debut album.

I like the country tunes most.

Nice little album

Album 721 of 1001 Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour (2018) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Country music from this century isn't my usual go to but his wasn't half bad. Great songwriting and sound. This album made me think of a more mature Taylor Swift. Enough of a pop element included to keep me interested. Not bad.

Not really my thing but some good songs and nicely recorded.

Musgraves exhibits a radio country voice, which I can't say I'm in love w/ or would ever feel the need to return to. The soft, gossamer affect leaves me wanting more, and instead of floating I feel like I'm parachuting thru a dull lecture on something pop. Some of the instrumentation, especially as the record gets going, is effective (strings, synths), and lyrics like these are at least up to snuff: 'Plants that grow and open your mind'; 'Coming thru the melody when the night bird sings'; 'I know my place, and it ain't w/ you.' But excited about this I'm not - too innocuous, too tame, not necessarily sterile, but never massively alive, never turbulent or usefully grungy. Saved by 'Happy & Sad' and 'Velvet Elvis,' Kacey suffices but doesn't floor.

I enjoyed this a fair bit, but it got a little samey after a while. A fairly solid three.

Good material, well written and arranged, nice and mellow, I'm just not too crazy about her voice. Been listening to this before, and couldn't make up my mind to buy it. Love the artwork, the contrast between the blue sky and the red fan.

more like 3.5

Before listening to Golden Hour, I had never heard of Kacey Musgraves, so I was curious to dive into this 2018 release. Exploring modern music outside my usual genres is part of why I took on this challenge, and this album felt like a good place to start. The opening track, "Slow Burn," lives up to its name — it’s a gentle introduction, but it never really takes off for me. On the other hand, "Lonely Weekend" and "Butterflies" are more engaging and easy to enjoy. My favorite track, though, was "Love Is a Wild Thing." It's beautifully written and captures the heart of the album with its emotional depth and warmth. What stood out most were the lyrics. Musgraves brings a socially conscious edge to country music, which isn’t something you encounter often. It gives the album a sense of purpose and authenticity beyond the usual themes of love and heartache. Overall, Golden Hour is a pleasant listen. It’s not groundbreaking for me, but I’d happily give it another spin. Favorite song: Love Is a Wild Thing Least favorite: Slow Burn and Mother — both felt a bit too slow and dry. Album artwork: Cute and fitting for the album’s vibe.

It is not offensive, but I don't get the love

Okay. Why the hell have I gotten three country/country-adjacent albums in a row now? I don't get it! Anyways, let's talk about Kacey Musgraves's 2018 album Golden Hour. Country music (modern country especially) has never really been my thing. However, I don't think that's the genre's fault. I blame everyone around me for only exposing me to hot garbage. Most of the modern country that I've heard is fucking horrendous. It's just this soulless mishmash of country and all these other genres like rap and pop just filled with buzzwords like whiskey and Chevy and Jesus and all that stuff, you know? It's dishonest and pandering to an audience of rural republicans, and because I live in a (somewhat) rural town with lots of republicans, I have to hear this shit every day and I hate it. However, when I say "this shit," I am not referring to the songs on Golden Hour. I'm merely providing a background for my thoughts on "modern country," which mostly do not apply to this album. While Golden Hour isn't really my thing personally, I can absolutely respect this album for being an honest piece of art. The writing is actually solid and doesn't just mention random car companies and fast-food chains! The closest it gets is mentioning a Silverado at one point, but that feels more like it's creating a mental image rather than a cash grab. The songs are about things like love and stuff and they're nice. Kacey's singing is also quite nice. The sound is definitely that of a modern country album, but at least it's not in a super annoying way with trap beats and stuff like that. I may be slightly biased, but I need to try my best to overcome the modern country bias that I admittedly still kind of have. Golden Hour is a good album. The world would be a better place if more country was like this instead of what it is now. 3/5.

Better than I expected

Eh, not my scene, but it's alright.

The production on this album is impressive. Almost like if justice produced a country album. She's also a great singer, but it just feels flat? I don't know. It's interesting but not something I find I could listen too on a regular basis.

always a pleasure to listen to this record. Think it falls off a bit in the 2nd half but lots of fun

Some 4* songs in a 3* album.

Really liked the first song but the rest was not for me

Some good songs but too much of the same same

Great Vocals -Slow Burn -Oh, What A World

The album was ok. Not my favorite album of hers.

It's slightly above average and I guess a bit enjoyable.

Listened to this while playing Imperium: Legends. I lost. I enjoyed this album more than I was expecting to based on what I'd read. It still wasn't anything genre defining, or even a genre best, but I didn't hate any part of it.

Cool album. Probably not the kind of thing I'll listen to much in the future.

I was blown away by this album the first and second times I listened. I thought to myself, "Finally! Country music that is good!" But then I listened to the album more closely a third time and realized that most of the lyrics are pretty basic (occasionally bordering on cloying or cringe) and the instrumentation is rudimentary and almost sounds like a drum machine at times. I think my initial amazement is 100% on Musgraves voice, which I still think is beautifully crisp and ethereal. I can see why Lady A, which she sang for before releasing solo work, was a great fit for her because it allowed her vocals to shine while leaving instrumentation and lyrics to others.

Pop country. It's got a few good songs.

Really liked this but don’t know how much I’ll go back to it. Other people scratch that itch a bit better.

Enjoyed it more than I thought

Enjoyed this. Had a really nice warm feel to it and her voice is lovely

Pleasant.

I don't think it's one of the 1000 greatest albums I've ever heard, but I like it.

Inoffensive but generic country-adjacent pop music. Easy to listen to but I doubt I'll ever have the urge to put this album back on.

This wasn’t too bad! Could be higher, but I’m feeling harsh. Simpsons: No

3.5 A nice surprise. Not a modern country fan, but she's accessible like Sheryl Crow was for me generation.

fine and inoffensive, not sure why its here

Not a fan of this kind of country, she has a great voice though.

Really not my thing, but I actually quite enjoyed it.

A good album, I liked Space Cowboy, Slowburn and Butterflies the most.

An excellently written, performed, and produced crossover album for Kacey Musgraves who was known for more traditional country music before this album. GOLDEN HOUR is a fun collection of risks taken on so many different genres and Musgraves manages to navigate that very tricky line between kitschy and sentimental. Truly a type of country/pop crossover I had never quite heard before and thus really does belong on this list.

Pop easy listening vibe

Не топ, приятная нейтральная музыка, особо не трогает

Generalistic, like music made with AI, lyrics made by elementary school children, to not offend anybody

78% Best: Slow Burn; Butterflies; Velvet Elvis; Wonder Woman; High Horse Must-Hear? No, but I liked it more than I thought I would.

Heard before. Bigger fan of her 2024 album, but this one’s not bad.

Nashville country-pop, where it goes more into pop territory. Pretty middle of the road.

Soothing I guess. It's like having a younger sister in Tennessee. I can block out what she says due to the accent, and what remains is pleasant and soothing. A bit gimmicky. I feel like this could be a radio channel on the Sims.

Mhmm not sure that's for me. Not necessarily bad though

Liked it more than what I am willing to admit

Very solid songwriter that I'm largely unfamiliar with, probably because I don't follow country. But this is deceptively country--like how Taylor Swift started as country. Slap a pedal steel guitar on a track and everyone's Hank Williams. I don't buy it, this is pretty far from modern country and it's solid. Would go 3.5, but hanging a 3 on it as it might be a little too easy/simple.

I would say that of all my beloved modern sad-girl country-flecked artists (your Waxahatchees, your Lenkers, the Jess Williamsons of this world), Kacey Musgraves isn't right up there. It's just a touch too poppy for me in places, and is closer to the 'Taylor goes folk' end of things. That said, it's still a genre that I really enjoy, and there was lots to like in this. Some of the harmonies are really powerful and emotive and I think it's quite nice and varied in tone.

I spent the whole album trying to figure out if I like her voice. I'm still puzzled. When slow burn came out I kind of liked it, but the whole album is literally the same song.

Not bad but not something I’d probably go back to anytime soon.

As one half of middle of the road country duo, Houmous & Chutney, I know a thing or two about creating boring, middle of the road records that you never want to listen to again, so I partly appreciate Kacey Musgrave for doing it so well. 2.5

Country pop. Voz bonita. Ni fu ni fa.

I must admit it: I got excited when I saw the cover of the album Golden Hour. Would this be perhaps an entry into alt-flamenco? That expectation was banished when I saw that this was country pop. Then, I passed from expectations to reservations. And yet, despite being a mixed bag, Golden Hour has some interesting ideas here and there that have reconciled me with the genre. In this album, you will immediately detect the type of new country you associate with Taylor Swift (especially her early stuff). Themes, tone, and imagery are relatively similar. However, there is a genuine virtue in this album. Musgraves does a brilliant work bringing disparate influences (Lana del Ray's angst and oblique metaphors, Bee Gees' vocal harmonies and disco vibes, Daft Punk neo-disco beats, vocoders, Lennon's piano-based earnestness, even hints of chacha) into selective elements that define the raw structures of country music. This is one of the virtues of the artist. In Golden Hour, Kacey Musgrave selects key elements of country music tradition (melodic arcs, banjo backgrounds, and customary key progressions), so they can easily merge into any other genre at ease. The musical choices are insightful and show us a musician with a keen palate and remarkable intelligence. To the appeal of the album, it can be added the overall talent you can sense in the production. Unfortunately, these brilliant choices are marred in my opinion by trite explorations of love, lines that veer over platitudes that sound too clichéd. It does not help the fact that the overarching journey of the album and the one that individual tracks propose are constantly uneven. I found myself continuously passing from admiration to rolling my eyes. Golden Hour is not a perfect album and includes very few really solid songs. Certainly, some tracks hit the mark beautifully like the poignant "Mother", or the country-tainted piano-based "Rainbow" that sounds like Lennon's "Imagine" now reimagined. There is the creative fun in "High Horse". But then there is the mixed bag of "Slow Burn", "Happy and Sad" (notice the Bee Gees's harmonies in the chorus), and "Love is a Wild Thing" (with delayed harmonic resolutions that are quite nice). And then there is almost the rest. Cowboys who are regrettably not in space, lines like "Texas is hot and I am cold", Silverados, and a long list of trite country clichés that are paired with melodies and progressions that are just fine, but fall flat to me. In sum, Golden Hour is an inspiring and interesting album. I liked it more than I initially thought. However, is far from being an indispensable album. 7/10

Some good some bad. Not really my cup of tea, but I see the appeal and some songs hit that pop fan nerve

6.5/10

great voice

I've listened to quite a bit of country through this list now and it helped me appreciate how strange this modern country craze is. It's like the same old music but they just throw in what's new and popular and you get a cacophony of both. Sometimes that works, but a lot of the time it sounds pretty soulless despite the heartfelt performance.

An enjoyable listen with a beautiful voice

taylor de noantri

A lovely album with beautiful vocals.

Some nice songs, but not quite my scene. All fine though.

I knew nothing about Kacey Musgraves, and actually I know very little about country music at all, though I do like some country-related stuff (Wilco, some bluegrass, etc). So, I was happy to learn about this. In the end, I like the intro track (Slow Burn) but the rest of the album was just "meh" and tended to blend together.

She really does have a nice voice, doesn't feel like the normal topics discussed in country songs either. 3/5

I liked this album in spite of myself. She's got a really nice voice. Not a fan of the songs with the traditional country twang, but there were plenty of songs I genuinely enjoyed.

Liked this more than I expected to, considering I didn't think much of her new Deeper Well album. Interesting genre fusion, good production and some solid melodies Really enjoyed Space Cowboy, Butterflies, High Horse and Rainbow. Some of it is less memorable though, and the auto tune gets on my nerves after a while. Definitely worth a couple listens, but I won't be rushing back to it.

It’s not highbrow or particularly heavy on the lyrics but her voice is easy to listen. Not the best but certainly not the worst either.

It was ok. I listened to the whole album and there was not one song that jarred with me. Equally, nothing really caught my attention. She's got a nice voice, very smooth and clear. Musically I've never gelled with country music, and this is about as pop-orientated as country music gets and I still couldn't gel with it. Another 3 star album for me.

Early Taylor swifty. Enjoyed but a little sadder country then I like.

Never heard of Kacey before, I suspect she might be more popular in the US than the U.K. when I seen this was country pop i sighed. Though pleasantly surprised after 1 listen, her vocals are good, and it’s actually works her mixing country with pop. An album worth listening to at least one, and I’m sure this would be more popular in the U.K. if folk heard it.

A bit pop-y for my country music tastes but not bad otherwise.

There is some decent country songs here but only enough for 3 stars or C in my opinion.

Very strong start, though it kinda lost me by the end.

An unfortunate truth about this list is that only a small percentage of it is taken up by female artists or female-led bands. Which is why people like Patti Smith or Janelle Monáe stand out, and deserve to be properly recognized. I’ve been around enough to have heard the name Kacey Musgraves before. She is one of the modern country industries’ biggest stars. And one of its most widely celebrated. I’ve explained before why I have such a disdain for the state that country music finds itself in now. So I was still slightly apprehensive towards this. But I had also had decently high hopes for something mildly interesting. Even if I had only listened to the first song, I would still easily be able to come to the conclusion that this doesn’t belong anywhere in the same conversation as those other artists are in. It instantly sets itself apart. It’s probably why so many country artists commit to making such similar music. They know it works, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But this record is proof that sometimes that change is good, and warranted. And it can be nice to branch out at some point and explore new avenues. Make no mistake though, the country roots of her music is not abandoned. But this is much closer to dream pop in many ways, and fuses that with contemporary country music. Unfortunately I find that I can’t rate this too highly, because I still have some issues. It’s not very long at all, but the best of its ideas were pretty much worn out by the half way point. Kacey can sing well, but the range and variety in her vocals is a little flat for my tastes. And even though I’m not ever going to country music to find really thought-provoking lyrics, but man, the writing on this is admittedly pretty bad. Maybe I shouldn’t say bad, but definitely incredibly basic. I think I was looking for more than I actually got here, which is disappointing, considering how strong this starts. Rating: 6/10

No está mal, pero el anterior es muy superior. Siempre volveré a ese antes.

Well, this was gorgeous! Stripped back, mellow, sumptuous and simply gorgeous!

3.5 - i like it, but i also don't think it's all that special.

I was expecting overproduced country pop. This was a very nice listen. I can see this on in the background of a day event. I was hoping her voice was a bit more appealing. You could argue it’s a one trick pony, generic, etc, but I enjoyed it. It’s funny I read some other reviews on other albums and people really delve into the lyrics and subject matter. Maybe it’s me but I can’t that level of detail after one listen.

This album is unremarkable, though its consistent country pop sound is decent, but what really makes this album worth it is the last track, Rainbow, which is absolutely stunning

Not that entertaining, quite pleasant at times. I’ll take this over Pink Floyd any fuckin day of the week

3/5 Wonderful Sunday morning album.

First time getting a 2010s album in this. Powerful and emotional vocals. A lot of it was quite samey and plain in terms of instrumental. Generally country isn't my thing but I do like the folk elements mixed in, and the balance between pop and country. Highlights: Butterflies Oh, What A World Velvet Elvis High Horse

Cool breeze country without the twang. Slow Burn, Lonely Weekend, High Horse.

It was okay

Pretty catchy country (kinda indie ish feel sometimes) pop with more sound authenticity and maturity than many others in the country pop realm (I.e., bro country), occasionally drawing influence from other sounds and genres. Songs, often love songs, have decent lyrics, good melodies and light and simple but well-serving music arrangements. It spans from quiet and more reflective to fun pop music. There’s more to enjoy here than I expected. It isn’t groundbreaking or anything, but it’s nice to listen to.

Pretty enjoyable country pop record. Loved the first half. Not so much the second one

A very loved up album by Kacey Musgraves, off the back of her recent marriage at the time, with the help of some LSD. Golden Hour provides a warm embrace to a soul bearing artist. Best: Slow Burn Worst: Wonder Woman

3.5/5. This was good, but not for me. A bit to poppy.

Had never listened, at least on purpose, to Kasey Musgraves before. Nothing objectionable but rather like a discount version of old Taylor Swift songs. Nothing groundbreaking but decent enough.

V easy listening.

Not bad, I like her voice and some of the songs are lovely. However, I thought a lot of the songs sounded similar and I was getting tired of the album by the end...

As far as country goes, it was alright. Nothing special, though.

I find it funny that I discovered Chappell Roan not long before hearing this album -- because I could totally hear Musgraves covering "Casual." She's got a perfect voice for it. Anyway, it's a contemporary country album by a woman -- which already makes it 50x better than any bro-country out there. She sings all lovely. The songs are fine. I can see why a lot of folks love Musgraves and this album. Just not my cup of tea.

could i write poetry to this? n

This doesn't seem very different from any number of singer-songwriters. Good, but nothing special.

Ya IDK this was fine, verging on kind of nice. She has a nice enough voice and all, but there wasn't a lot that had me wowed. Butterflies is a jam, and I've definitely heard Rainbow before. Fine album that I could see myself playing in the car with Mehie; otherwise, I would never seek this out. Soft 3. Butterflies is a jam.

Pretty average album. Kinda country kinda pop. Not my wheelhouse, but it wasn't bad.

Spacey Kacey ayoooooo. This was a pleasant surprise. Never really got into her that much because it was always classified as country, but this had some great sounds and introspectiveness to it. High 3.

Sheryl Crow ran so Kacey Musgraves could walk

This was an ok album for it being country music. The song slow burn was catchy.

I like it, maybe not something I’ll listen to all the time, but she has an amazing voice. Good song quality and nice to listen to.

Kacey Musgraves is kind of like if Taylor Swift had never left the country scene and had kept maturing primarily in that space, with a bit of dabbling in folk and pop. As a result, she has definitely had a huge part in leading the charge of country pop in the modern age. Many female artists pioneered a 90s-2000s country pop sound, but pop music has changed since then; indie music style kind of bled into pop and therefore into country pop, and Kacey has now taken on that 2010+ period of country pop. What results is an album that is heavily influenced by the songwriting and music styles of country with the easy listening, chillness of indie type music. And while this particular country-indie-pop combination has grown a lot in popularity in recent years, Kacey Musgraves was among some of the first artists really pushing this sound out to a general population. A good, inoffensive listen!

Other than recognizing the name I knew nothing about her or her music until listening to this album. I like it. She sings and writes Hippy Country Music.

I don't like country and more the most part think it's lack luster music from instrumental perspective but she does do it better than the others ... her voice is very OK ? is that a hot take? The sad songs appealed to me and the ones that stretched her voice and leaned into country specific motifs really didn't

Favorite was "Rainbow"

Country pop. Voz bonita. Ni fu ni fa.

The thing that stands out, more than the songs, is how slick this whole affair is — the production takes the front seat. The melodies are ok, the harmonies come in at the right time, every instrumental choice complements the sound. But it's empty, like she's wearing a Kacey Musgraves suit — I don't feel like I've met the real person inside. And I don't think there's an up-tempo tune until track 11. That didn't help any. I'm at an enjoyment level of a 2.2, with .8 going to professional studio production.

This is pleasant enough and the lyrics are interesting. Also, I dig how she subverts expectations. But I'm struggling to love this for reasons I can't quite articulate. Why isn't this my cup of tea? Am I a heartless monster? These questions and more...

I thought this album was mostly sweet.

My niece loves this

I wasn't really sure what to expect but I appreciate some of the clever lyrics. Faves for me. Slow Burn, Rainbow

Hmmm, tricky one to rate, this - on the one hand there a couple of slower, more introspective tracks that I _really_ like, but then most of the rest of the tracks are a little too poppy for my taste, and "High Horse" is absolutely godawful - just a couple more tracks like that in the mix and I'd give it two stars in a second. 3.5 I guess, and I'm gonna round..... down. Fave track - "Slow Burn" is my fave by a mile. "Oh, What a World" has its charm, too...

Nothing bad, nothing great about this album. If you are a person that thinks the world is bad, and longs for the days that never truly happened, this is the cheezy feel good music for you. Kacey uses the same vocal manipulation in almost every song and it becomes monotonous. I am guessing that Apple Music put it as one of their top albums because Kacey used the word chrysalis.

Pretty poppy, some interesting synth sounds

Repeatably listenable. Easy. Nice.

There’s a sheen to it that I struggle with, but some damn good songs. “Slow Burn” is tremendous. This could potentially grow one day. 3/5

I liked this more than I expected, but I don't generally find the genre all that interesting.

Never again

A good voice ruined by autotune. The instrumentation was really nice.

A quite good album, not too country-ish. Pleasant voice, production's good. Nice easy listening, nothing that stays rememberable.

Мило) 6/10

Good background music. I like her voice but there’s nothing super special about it.

So I recognize it’s like fantastically produced really good pop country music. I’m just not in love with it. Her 2024 release I liked a bit more. Adele clears

I didn’t hate it so it’s better than most country/pop albums in my book. It doesn’t feel like anything special outside of that metric though.

You've heard of Bro Country... here's Chick Country?

Although I grew up on country, I never listen to it anymore so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of new artists. I added a few songs to my favorites (Lonely Weekend and Rainbow) I'd rate a 3.5 but I don't think I'd listen to it on my own unless I was in a mood, so giving it a 3.

In spite of myself, I found this kind of charming at first - partially, I suspect, because I’d never heard it before. (I think a lot of my aversion to pop music can be attributed to overexposure to certain songs/artists.) Unfortunately, that only lasted about five songs before it started to wear out its welcome; paying closer attention to the lyrics, I realized how cheesy a lot of them are. Still, I think there’s something in this not-quite-country, not-quite-generic-pop album that gives it a bit more heart than expected.

a fun country (?) spring album - probably wont hear again tho

For some reason I was expecting a country album. Good Americana influenced pop album.

Cut #1, SLOW BURN, is A+. "Grandma cried when I pierced my nose." Reminds me of a fraternity brother of mine who, in Maine, back in '71, painted his toenails with bright red nail polish. I asked him why, and he told me that it upset his grandmother, who lived in Pennsylvania. Beautiful voice. Simple, effective instruments. Very clean production. Nice harmonies. Certainly didn't expect synthesized vocals on #4 - Cat Power did it better on her "Sun" LP. #5, MOTHER, great 1:18 love song to her mother. Uh oh...just read that 'Musgraves discussed being under the influence of LSD when composing the songs "Mother" and "Slow Burn"', my two favorite songs #6, LOVE IS A WILD THING, showcases her as a wordsmith, and all kinds of instrumentation sneaks in ... banjo, steel, and something I can't identify (electronica?). #9, VELVET ELVIS. For no good or sane reason, I'm embarrassed that someone wrote this song. Taking back that earlier "wordsmith" comment......"But, baby, I ain't Wonder Woman. I don't know how to lasso the love out of you." Much of this collection (to me) sounds like what the competitors of The Voice here.ould be singing. Don't know what that means, but that's what I hear. I think I dislike the poppier tunes (especially HIGH HORSE). ⭐⭐⭐ ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 52 🎧 LPs left to review: 949 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 11 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 17 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 14

Well written, well produced, not my style.

Modern country music…like plain oatmeal. It’s just not that good. “Slow Burn” is great with the banjo, though. “Rainbow” is good. I can leave the rest.

Unlistenable.

I was excited for this one because everything I've heard about Kacey as a person was good. She is country but also a little progressive. But I was disappointed by love song after long song that was still rooted in mysigony. There were glimpses I loved, like Happy and Sad. It was a fine album and I still really like Butterflies and I would have loved this in high school but now I just want something a little deeper. By the end I was craving anything that was not a love song, but Rainbow was just enough to save it. I don't like any song individually which is why it's getting a 3 not a 2, but I wouldn't want to listen to this album in totality again
