Great album. Every song is good. Early 80’s new wave. Definitional.
My knowledge of The Cure can be best summed up as "The band with the one song". Similar to Blur and Song 2, this often leads people to having a pretty big misunderstanding of the bands style, and yeah that's true here. This wasn't what I expected in a pretty good way! Post-Punk and Goth-Rock as a genre combination is always going to be something I'm pretty interested in, and yeah, this delivers! The more experimental songs like "Three" which I really enjoy, are short enough that they never wear out their welcome. Meanwhile the soundscape is varied enough here that the album never feels like it's repeating itself. All this usually would result in something that feels as if its rushing, indeed it is very compact. In actuality, the pacing on this album is truly top notch. Instrumental sections give songs just enough time to breath, like the building intro to "A forest". This feels like an album that is very aware that it's going to be listened to as an album experience, and so its perfect for something like this list.
perfect album to play whenever I want to be moody and British or haven't brushed my hair in a while
Perfect
Wonderful
Love
Seventeen Seconds is the third album by The Cure I’ve listened to as part of this challenge. I previously scored Pornography and Disintegration very highly, so I went into this expecting more of the same. After a few listens today, this might actually be my favourite Cure album. It’s dark, moody, and haunting, and feels way ahead of its time. As a complete piece of music, it’s brilliant. The album moves between goth and a kind of electronic melancholy. The sound is minimal, built on reverb and space, simple on the surface but with real depth underneath. It creates this intense atmosphere that runs through the whole record, and the lyrics fit that mood perfectly. Robert Smith’s voice is made for this kind of music. Favourite tracks: A Forest has always been one of my favourite Cure songs. On its own it’s epic, but within the album it feels even bigger and more powerful Least favourite tracks: Every song on the album is brilliant Album artwork: Love the cover, it perfectly matches the mood of the album
a great album. i love how concise it is.
I love this album and am so happy it made the list. This album and the 'Faith' album were on repeat for years.
SO GOOD
Melancholyc and deeper sound. Happy+ sad= the cure
Really really good album. I listened to it a couple of times and I found it to be very atmospheric and able to carry an eerie soundscape while also being laid-back. It felt surreal at times and it reminded me of Twin Peaks. First album I listen to by The Cure and I'm intrigued to check out more by them.
I liked this one so much i listened to it twice. And the next day
So good! Very chill.
Dreamy
its difficult to go into early cure divorcing urself from the knowledge of the more layered, baroque direction they would eventually go...pornography is just two years after this, and it sounds less like the ice sculpture songs here than it does an unholy wall of sound. it kind of drives home that for all the cure records ive heard, the unified strength is just how well every player and every sound locks together...and its perhaps easiest to appreciate on this relatively unadorned record that nonetheless proves the fact that the band's central sound and songwriting are so vivid that they can create feeling and image and atmosphere even in their most direct form. records like pornography and disintegration are often so overwhelming in their effect that i struggle to hold them all in my ears...theres something comforting ab how digestible this record is, how it scratches my ears in such an immediate and honest way. all while still being obviously masterful enough to have tracks that clearly have to rank among their best material ever. getting more into this band is a priority for whenever im receptive to listening to albums that arent just my daily one lol
Great album
The Cure is uniek en helemaal mijn straatje (moody goth rock?).
Not family with much of The Cure beyond the hits. So this was great to hear.
The Cure has been one of my favorite bands for years. Though this album isn’t their best, it still has a fantastic haunting, smoky atmosphere and stands much taller than most post punk albums, so it is still getting a 5.
I love this album, listened to it twice yesterday. I had never heard it before and was more familiar with their later more pop goth stuff which I also like. This album was something I always wanted and didn't know existed.
Excellent
That’s a strange Cure album in a sense it might not be as polished and fancy from the production perspective as their later albums, but at the same time it’s more..coherent and wholesome, even more than Disintegration (which itself is a peak). And it’s certainly a fav of mine, the exemplary Cure’s post-punk sound.
The bass is amazing in every song
This might be 5/5 for me. I vibed with this album HEAVY. In Your House personal fave cause that guitar groove is just peak. Followed by Three que tiene un real Gorillaz vibe, Im sure que The Cure es un influence. Really Great!
The gothic groove is unmatched
Very peak. The sound is soooo good
Fantastic perfection
You can feel imediatly the first drops of rain falling on a cloudy day as soon these guitars starts to play. The 80s The Cure is 5 stars, always.
Aah Cure. Forest ihan 1000/5 biisi. Curen tuotannosta vähän jännempää ja jytämpää mut ihanaa!
Man, this might be the only "post punk" album I've really enjoyed. My goth heart rejoices. 5/5
ME ENCNATOOOOO
The Cure er based, hva vil dere ha av meg?
The Cure er kult ass. Herlig minimalistisk og tilbakeholdent med god selvtillit!
An absolute masterpiece!!!
I am for sure bias with The Cure, I can't get enough of their guitar tones and sounds. Very unique and iconic. Always has a dark moody yet also fun joyous sound to it. I dig the OG emo music.
Few bands reward deep dives into their catalogue more than The Cure. Unlike their future rivals, The Smiths, The Cure never rested on their laurels. By just their second album, they had broadened their sound front to back, completely dropping their middling post-punk debut and venturing to something darker, something more atmospheric. It also demonstrated Robert Smith’s improvement as a songwriter. No doubt influenced by his time touring with Siouxsie and The Banshees, Smith began writing less about being a bored teenager and more about the moments of despair he’d experience surrounding his, at times, troubling desires. He also became a less literal writer, and adopted a more vague, even dreamlike, perspective. “In Your House” embodies this well, as we see Smith wander around a house he’s emotionally drowning in. He never says who is imagining a different life with, or why he is even inside this house at all, but we get the sense he shouldn’t be there. The protagonist’s intentions are equally unclear, but Simon Gallup’s slinky baseline seems to suggest Smith may be up to something more sinister, implying he’s less of a spurned lover and more like a stalker who has broken into his victim’s home while they weren’t around. This is to assume we should be reading these events so literally, as the “house” could easily be read more metaphorically. If there’s a weak spot, it’s probably the instrumental interlude “Three” and “A Final Sound”, which feels like something that wouldn’t feel out of place on one of those Halloween Sounds compilation. The counterpoint here is that it makes the centerpiece of “A Forest”, which is at times my favorite Cure song, even more impactful. Much like “In Your House”, “A Forest” is light on context, and embodies a feeling of fear and uncertainty as our protagonist runs through a forest (literal or metaphorical, who knows) toward a mysterious woman. The driving rhythm propels us deeper and deeper, potentially away from something chasing him, until he’s gone too deep. The turmoil of Smith’s guitar work in between verses only echo this, particularly when it all comes crashing down once he realizes there is no woman and no end to the forest, doomed to run into the abyss forever. Three Imaginary Boys may be The Cure’s debut, but Seventeen Seconds feels like their real beginning, and a better representation of what was to come.
Love the cure but had not thoroughly listened to this album. Such a great variety in their writing that it’s hard not to love.
I like a tight, 30-minute album. This one really grew on me, with the second half of the album being far better than the first Favorite Songs: In Your House, A Forest, M, At Night
The start of a great run of albums
jadore
Ah, best in a while and I hadn't even heard a single song from this Cure album! 4 added to favs. 4.5/5
I already love the cure. Adore them actually
Epic
I like old Cure - I probably had heard this album before at someone's house but it's been decades since I heard it. I really enjoyed it.
omfg!!!!!!!!magiczny album❄️❄️
Such a dark, depressing album. I love it. A Forest is a fucking masterpiece.
very good album, didn’t expect to listen to it through and through lol

Favorite Track: Seventeen Seconds
SO many bangers
Classic
oh to be in the 80s dancing to this album on a goth club
Good stuff
My first album of the year and I'm not disappointed at all.
Early Cure hits so differently and so good!
I was wondering when I'd get my first album from The Cure. I knew they had to be on the list, but was surprised that this record was on there. Not surprised in a bad way at all, but I'd expected the ones with more of the hit songs. One of the things I've always loved about The Cure is that they have said hits, but they are so much more. The singles are catchy and cool. But their albums are always way more moody and downbeat which is right in my wheelhouse. This specific record has A Forest, an awesome single while also being moody and downbeat. There are other great songs like Play for Today, M, At Night, and the title song, and as a whole it just has a great vibe. I'm looking forward to getting more from the band.
beautifully minimalist
Interesante. Muy mi mood! Melancólico, rockero. En mi adolescencia me hubiese encantado.
Another dark, broody Cure album. You have to be in the mood for it. Evidently I am today, because it's a great album. It does a great job setting a dreary mood.
Love
Oh so "gloomtastic". I have to say this one def hit my mood today. Who knew this one would resonate so well, having never heard before? Goth/psychedelic/anstract AF. Instrumentation and lyrics just work. Extra reverb on guitar (bass) adds just the chef's kiss amount of interest on at Night. Oh my goodness.. play this at my funeral (jk, I am not having one of those). Listened before? N Saved some tracks? Y Favorite tracks: A Forest, M, At Night ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved it. Saved a bunch of tracks.
This sounds crazy fresh even in 2025. I love post-rock and this is a great combination of 80's and lo-fi. It's slinky and grim and also weirdly peaceful. There are a ton of bands I love that are obviously inspired by The Cure and their take on goth rock, new wave and pop rock.
This project has started disturbing my Apple Music algorithm. Random artists from my previous listens end up in my “radio station”. Most of the time it’s great! Apple knows I’m expanding my knowledge and throws me new tunes from newly discovered faves. But then there are the bad ones. Latter day ABBA. That terrible Beach Boys album. I fear the Flamin’ Groovies are on that list. Not for me. 1/5.
Not as good as Faith or Disintegration. But still amazing.
Can't remember the last time I listened to this one. Still a classic
Very goth
My favorite Cure album. Here the synths started to debut, an unobtrusive texture underneath the original trio’s sound. A must.
Unexpectedly a fair amount of instrumentals, great vibe and very goth unlike their more poppy and polished later works. Pleasant surprise!
Great!
Too many memories, too much sadness associated with this album and the many times I've listened to it. But that's all about the journey to become the person who we are at the moment we reflect upon this journey. I was in Germany and the young woman I was dating at that time was into The Cure. I was not. But eventually I saw the light (after finally listening to Joy Division). Those were good time, living in Heidelberg, going to the university living in a former Neckar River defensive turret/silo-shaped round repurposed for college students, over looking the river. Cold as hell...but glorious nonetheless. Yes, this album was a part of these memories. My best friend in those days is now a philosophy prof at Boston College. But then he was a young guy who could dance and drink and listened to great music. Yep, memories.
I’m a big Cure fan but haven’t listened to this entire album before. Loved it from start to finish. Very atmospheric and some great tunes.
10/10 ah...cure scratches a little spot in my head that makes me feel like I'm at home. warmth, light, freedom. Makes me want to write non sense in a review. 11-24-2025
And on a rainy day
I really enjoyed this
we love the cure in this household
Lovely
Great album by one of the best bands
great bass sound and lines. short and sweet. they were only 20 yo?!
Love this album...maybe my favorite of the early Cure. A Forest is a top 3 Cure song for me. 5/5
(Listened before) Today, the 1001albumsgenerator suggested I enjoy some watercolor in shades of gray and the perfect soundtrack for november. This is their second album, which was marked by a change in the lineup and the establishment of Robert Smith's dictatorship. Musically, it's a collection of melancholic tracks with minimalistic arrangements, full of gloom, despair and reverb so that your hand instinctively reaches for the black eyeliner. The songs for the album were mostly written by Robert Smith at his parents' house on a Hammond organ with a built-in cassette recorder. Pretty cool to have a device like that at home. The material was played live many times before recording so they recorded it in a couple of studio sessions, and it took seven days including mixing. The budget was very limited and it shows. it's especially noticeable in The Final Sound which cuts off at 53 seconds because the tape ran out. i can actually hear tape flaws in some places, ie at 2:22 in M one channel drops out for a moment. The album is another living proof that sound quality isn't that important if the music is great. I'm listening to the 2005 reissue on Spotify. The remaster was done from a vinyl record because the original recordings (master tapes) were stored next to a washing machine and got demagnetized over time. It's like they were stored at my grandma's place (no, my grandma would have thrown them out at all like she did with the photo negatives). Everything that managed to avoid the washing machine was included in the second part of the reissue: instrumental demos, live recordings from 1980, as well as recordings by Cult Hero, a supergroup that included The Cure, their relatives and friends, and the relatives and friends of those relatives and friends.
One of the best albums ever made. Dark and mysterious, but never loses its sense of mystery. Incredible and formative on my youth.
Instant 5, I'm gonna listen to it on repeat for the rest of the day
Man I love the Cure. I’m probably just trying to be different, but I honestly think this is their best. Love the dark vibes of this one. Have it on a scratched Vinyl
A huge improvement from their debut album, it sounds a lot more somber and slowed down. I love the production on this album, especially the bass, and Robert Smith's vocals are a lot better here too. A Forest is easily one of my favorite Cure songs. Low 5.
Perfect autumn album
A giant step from their debut. Taking a cue from Joy Division and perhaps Bauhaus, this has such an excellent blend of gloom and accessibility. The almost krautrock pulse and haunting psychedelia does it for me.
When I was young I used to make my own songs by overdubbing DIY instruments using two audio cassette players. Some of the instrumentals on here remind me of that - in a good way, of course. The songs are moody, sulky and angsty. A Forest is the best goth rock this side of Crawley.
Good one. Curious choice from their discography.
Seventeen Seconds marks The Cure’s transformation from post-punk minimalism to a haunting, atmospheric sound that would define their career. Every track feels drenched in mood—cold, spacious, and hypnotic. Songs like “A Forest” and “Play for Today” perfectly balance melancholy with momentum, while the sparse production and echoing guitars create a timeless sense of isolation. It’s a masterclass in restraint and emotional texture—an album that rewards both casual listening and deep immersion.
Enjoyed this way more than I was expecting. Very dated sounding but I think that worked well for the music. Very artificial and melancholy. I think I’ll be checking out more from The Cure!
"Seventeen Seconds" is the second studio album by English rock band the Cure. Gothic rock and new wave are the Wiki-listed genres. Frontman, lead vocalist and guitarist Robert Smith said the sound was influenced by opening for Siouxsie and the Banshees as well Nick Drake, Pink Floyd and Captain Beefheart and has been their "most personal record they've done." Simon Gallup replaced Michael Dempsey on bass who left the band and keyboardist Matthieu Hatley became an official member. Rounding out the band is drummer Lol Tolhurst. Commercially, the album reached #20 in the UK. The album starts with a long silence in "A Reflection." Ominous and sparse piano keys set the contemplative tone for the remainder of the album. The band's sound takes focus in "Play for Today." Bass, drums, piercing guitar strikes which eventually turn into a layered guitar melody. A banging sound throughout. Smith's whiney vocals come in; he has the only whiney vocals I like. He also likes to say "You" followed by something negative a lot. Emotional detachment as a theme. Ah, the Cure we love. "Secrets" has more post-punk guitars. Smith is whispering. More atmospheric. The album single was "A Forest." Droning synths. Dark guitar and keyboard strikes. Very eerie. The song was inspired by a nightmare of being lost in a forest. "Seventeen Seconds" closes the album. It's slower with a strumming guitar and plodding bass. Clear and unemotional vocals actually making the song emotional. You need to make a decision in 17 seconds....maybe a suicide tilt to the theme as well. The band successfully create their classic dark and eerie atmospheric sound on this album. There were hints of it on their debut album, "Three Imaginary Boys," but here but here they really flush it out. You can hear the Siouxsie and the Banshees post-punk guitar influences. Gallup's bass is out front. Themes of death, lost, hopelessness, despair and dread. Why am I thinking of Wednesday Adams? Anyway, this is a classic Cure album and a definite listen for fans. Strong recommendation.
Ladies and gentleman, Simon Gallup. I've always loved A Forest, and listening to the whole album helped me hear how much the new bass sound contributes to the success of that track and the change in sound for The Cure going forward. A great album for an example of a light touch with clear impact.
Brilliant, haunting album A Forest is one of three GOATs and the anticipation building when you know it's about to start is hard to beat 9/10
(92/100)
I know of no other album, even including the Cure’s other albums, that sounds like this. This album is a world of its own. It would be one of my first choices for walking in woods in the snow in the middle of the night. Must-listen #231.
I feel like in 1001's best stretch, this would have been a 4. But since it's been 3 weeks since we've had a really excellent album, this gets the boost. 5
Stupendo
Loved the older stuff.
very good
1st of the trilogy
Really liked this. Didn't know much about the Cure before but found it really interesting and atmospheric.
absolutely beautiful album, the notes all came together perfectly and it all made sense.
yum yum yum that's more like it! ahgschalte & direkt 2 mal dureglost – so isch de halbi tag schaffe wie im flug vergange & d'energielevel sind sofort gstiege das verdient 5 chröte wenn mich frögsch
Incredible album by the best band on Earth. This list needs more Cure records!
Great album thx!
A really good album with strong melodies and evocative lyrics. It has standout tracks but these are framed by the songs around them to give them more impact. The maturity and confidence of the album is remarkable given their age at the time.
Hell yeah
i love the cure holy shit a forest peak 4.7/5
Se ganaron misvestrellas
Could not stop listening to this album
My favorite band from teenage years - every song still "clicks" with me! I'll give it a 5/5 easily: - great songs, - lovely memories, - everything is as it should be ;-)
The first in the Cure's gloomy trilogy. This is the bleak one. There is not a bad track on here. It's got my favourite single of all time on it, 'A Forest' it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear it.
Absolutely stunning post-punk
I love The Cure and consider this their first great album; it’s their first consistently Cure-ish album, and it set the tone for the next forty-plus years. Play For Today, M, and the title track Seventeen Seconds are probably among my favourite Cure tracks but the whole record hangs together brilliantly.
Off the cuff remark: I have always loved the Cure, suspect I always will. There is no other band like them. This seems a strange album choice for this 1001, while none of their albums are exactly a party a minute this is particularly downbeat. Of its time and yet not dated. Standout track: avoiding the obvious wonderful A Forest, Play for Today is a particularly favourite. Revisit?: Yes. Often
The Cure really is The Cure (and I'm sure it's been said a few thousand times)
I really liked it. This albums is more music forward and less vocal. Great background stuff. I added it to my favorites. I will listen to it again.
I’ve loved this album for years. Even though I hadn’t listened to it for a while, still a masterpiece in my mind.
Riktigt bänger. Bra kvällsmelankolisk vibe och även nice instrumentala låtar!
Unbelievable album. It’s the cure. One of my favorite bands. I can’t say anything bad about them. Just a joy to and pleasure to listen to.
4 stars, this is not a morning album this is a late afternoon album. I wish I started listening to this with more focus but it would be an easy 5 stars otherwise. ACTUALLY that's a lie I heard at least half and really enjoyed it 5 STARS LETS GOOO BABY
Easily on of their best albums
A bloody classic! A Forest is still one of the best songs ever written by Robert Smith.
Another great album
dark, brooding, and ethereal, but with enough energy and life to keep it engaging. i only knew a forest going into this, but this album is great all the way through. i've listened to it several times now and it may be my favorite cure album (though that's not a super high bar at the moment). favorites: everything but three, the final sound, and at night
Excellent.
Still, I find "Three Imaginary Boys" their best album ever.
I love The Cure and this album is no exception. It is atmospheric and one of the more calming Cure albums. Maybe not their very best but too good to give it a 4.
Jævlig bra
The Cure always gets 5 stars. Band name checks out. This album in particular is minimalistic in nature and highly effective. Thank you for the music.
Yay for the cure
Really enjoyed this
Not a Cure fan but this was great. Really enjoyed the album and loved how it sounded. It made me want to be a whiny moody goth.
What a well made album. Mysteriously melancholic and sometimes magical
Without this list, I would've probably never come across this album. What a GEM. Pure, unmatched vampy vibes. I consider myself a pretty big The Cure fan and I had never heard any of this songs. "In Your House" made me have such a visceral reaction, I had to go cry in the bathroom. Holy fuck.
they can never make me hate you, bobert
Great and surprising
Finding their way into the dense fog!
my lovely the cure album. admiration from st.petersburg
The Cure was really the first band that I heard that wasn't something that would be played on the radio. My cousin had the album Head On The Door, but I quickly sought out other records and one of them was, of course, Seventeen Seconds. The opening strains of “A Forest” are, of course, incredibly iconic and, for me, capture that first ability to to consider music that, although clearly still commercially viable in many ways, was different. It was just so fundamentally different from the pop music that was on the charts at the time. When I first heard it it seemed like a bit of a secret between myself and my cousin; this music that my parents didn't understand by a band whose lead singer clearly looked like something my parents couldn't understand. His voice and the sound of The Cure didn't make sense to them. I think that was the key point: that The Cure represented to me something that I loved but that my parents, as much as they wanted to, they couldn't understand why I would want to listen to this music or why this music, and music in general, was becoming incredibly important to me as a young teenager. It was perhaps the first salvo, the first big step in the creation of my sense of self.
a fucking classic
So I had a very strange experience listening to this album. I know for a fact that I’ve never listened to The Cure before, mainly because I have a family member who loves them but I never took the time to listen to them. Frankly it’s because they are a teenage girl and the image of the band is clearly angsty, so that kinda put me off for a long time. But this album taught me once again that you should never judge a book by its pre-teen cover. This album is musically just butter slowly melting on a burner barely turned on. It moody and emotional but it’s so smooth and effortless sounding. This is kinda cliche but it sounds like beings ready to take a nap and a nice heavy dose of rain starts coming in, but instead of being at home in your bed, you are in an open well lit abandoned screw factory with lots of gothic light pillars coming in from the windows. Honestly this album is so easy to get lost in. The vocals might not be for everyone but that’s just personal preference. A lot of albums I feel tend to lose me in the interludes but all the interludes meshed so perfectly with the music so well and was still distinct enough to keep my attention which is really saying something. The most shocking thing about this album is the fact that it is actually a no skip album.
Loved this crud and now that I think of it, it appears I am mounting my proper Cure moment. Groovy goth experimentation over steady post punk drum beats. Damn, is early cure real hip hop? Who can really truly say for sure?
What's not to like? "A Forest" is my favourite, such a great song.
People may be shocked to learn that I am in fact quite partial to this. Who knew?
Seventeen Seconds is the moment The Cure fully stepped into their signature sound—cool, distant, and steeped in atmosphere. Gone is the punk energy of their debut, replaced with spacious arrangements, icy guitar lines, and a ghostly mood that seeps into every track. It’s minimalist but never dull, with each song feeling like a fogged-up window into Robert Smith’s quietly unraveling world. The restraint in the playing gives the album its power—nothing feels rushed, nothing feels unnecessary. The standout here is A Forest, a hypnotic, eerie track that captures the album’s tone perfectly. But the strength of Seventeen Seconds lies in its consistency—songs like M, Play for Today, and the title track don’t just support the mood, they deepen it. The production is stark and cold, but that’s exactly what makes it work. It’s a masterclass in doing more with less, creating emotional depth through simple repetition and carefully chosen textures. While later Cure albums would go on to be more layered and expansive, there’s something special about the purity of this one. It’s a mood piece, and if you're in the right headspace, it's completely absorbing. Seventeen Seconds isn’t just a great early post-punk record—it’s a blueprint for countless bands that followed. Quietly brilliant, deeply haunting, and endlessly replayable. Again and again and again and again...
One of the greatest albums from the 1980s or any decade for that matter. This is prime CURE and The Cure at their best was (and still is in 2025) among the greatest bands of all time up there with The Beatles, The Who, The Jam, The Rolling Stones and The Small Faces.
Classic
One of my favorites
Smiled when this popped up. I cherish this record. Not my favourite Cure album but I’m sure that’ll be in here too. And it was a delight to hear this again
Not much to say except it's freaking flawless. Know it, love it, will listen again.
I only ever hear the one song off of the album but the whole thing is a great album.
Better than I remember! Thanks for the nudge back to some really good music.
the less there is of smith the better turns out the album. sorry not sorry. super like the instrumental part.
A Forest is just a fucking banger. Rest of the album kind of fades away in comparison, but having such a strong song more than makes up for that, especially when it’s such a short album. (On a re-listen, I changed this from 4 to a 5)
Masterpiece
Great album. Had some certified bangers. Can definitely hear how they influenced the pixies, nirvana and others and I can see why they are some people’s favorite band
Atmospheric, moody. Listened to it 4 times in a day, so that makes this a 5 star. Even though it didn't have any catchy songs which is what i usually want in an album, it just hangs together so well and is such a good listen.
Great discovery. Used to find The Cure just ok, but this one was great !!
I remember watching MTV one day and seeing the video for In Between Days and it blew my mind. I have been a fan of The Cure since. This album conjures an atmosphere of an evening walk down a misty English lane surrounded by trees. I also love this one for all the amazing bass lines, especially in Play For Today. Perfection in 35 minutes of music.
En lytteopplevelse faktisk
Ain't nothing wrong with the Cure!
Insane how I used to hate this album as a child cause of the intro and the instrumental songs in the middle but today I heard this with older and wiser ears. This is now on my top 80s album list. Simply a masterpiece that I misjudged as a middle school kid
Þetta er svo drungalegt en samt notalegt. Hugsa bara um Twin Peaks. Jafnvel uppáhalds Cure platan mín. Svo gott heildarverk.
Sturlað góð plata.
One of my favourite cure albums
love it dearly
Yrs more like it quality noise from the orginal goth fathers. A forest stands the test of time and is still a banger!
One of quite a few Cure albums that just work despite all the hype and expectations. This is what I think of when I think about the Cure, though it's astonishing to remember their diversity of sounds in those first few years.
I'm very fucking depressed! I've always loved The Cure. They are dark, introspective and whiney so they tick everything on my checklist. Although I really like this album, it wouldn't be my top pick from the discography to include on this list. A Forest is a banger, but this is much more of the brooding Robert Smith than the arguably poppier and more popular version we get post Pornography. Still, great stuff. I'm nostalgic for stuff I wasn't around for. If you enjoyed this, check out the Greatest Hits Album.
This album was so beautiful. Glad to see more of them on this list!

The great thing about short albums is that you can listen to them multiple times and give them the chance to grow and work their charms. Initially gravitated to the stand out tracks : AForest / Play For Today but on third play I am starting to really enjoy nearly all of the tracks and its a solid 5.
First album of the "trilogy". Before *Seventeen Seconds*, The Cure already managed to leave a huge imprint with the "Killing An Arab" / "Boys Don't Cry" / "10:15 Saturday Night" / *Three Imaginary Boys* early era. But their true legend started there, with that second album digging one single gloomy groove until it lives rent-free in your soul. You can't beat "Play For Today", "In Your House" and most specifically "A Forest". Except on subsequent albums, that is. 5 stars, what else? Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 442 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 262 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 321
10 stars, if I could. Brilliant album!
The Cure never really clicked with me outside of a few of their more popular hits, but now it really does. Really love the dark mood it sets and the more barebones approach to instrumentation. Highlights for me are Play For Today, A Forest, M and At Night. The entire album really is great though.
One of the most iconic bands, one of the most iconic sounds in Rock history with one of their best albums.
Oh my god. This album created the best and most consistent atmosphere on an album I've ever seen. Down to the album art the music is just so solemn and frosty. Also every song was beautiful in its own way, the shorter ambient and electronic tracks added so much depth as well. The highlight is The Cure's trademark guitar and Smith's wailing vocals. I liked how on some of the tracks the vocals were pulled back, giving more attention to the instruments. Jesus. Fav Songs: Play for Today, A Forest, At Night, 17 Seconds
The Cure are consistently great. I enjoy how stripped back this one is, and how much of it is instrumental. It really elevates the creepy atmosphere they were going for here.
This is definitely one of my favorite albums by The Cure because it highlights their early exploration of post-punk and new wave sounds. At the same time, it captures their transition into a more goth rock direction. The album itself is pretty mellow and laid-back, with a strong atmospheric and ambient quality. The production enhances this soundscape, especially with those echo-laden guitar lines that really set the tone.
Not my thing but I really liked it! Great new wave album!!
Great!
The most OG of goth vibes on this one.
Geiles Album.
Never really enjoyed The Cure before, so had a sinking feeling when this came up, but it was actually surprisingly good. Crisp sounds, moody, I'll be adding this to my list of albums requiring a re-listen for sure.
Listened to this 3 times. Fabulous album with great vocals from Robert Smith. The music is amazing. Always loved the cure. Xx
Never listened to The Cure before but I really enjoyed this album. Wil definitely be listening to them more.
Great to hear this all the way through. Having loved A Forest since hearing it on John Peel some time in 1981, I don't know why I've never delved into the full album. I absolutely love the sound: sparse, just enough pedal to make it ethereal, Robert's faraway vocal relatively low in the mix. (And none of the annoying high note plinky-plonk bass that crept into later, "jollier" singles.) Really gorgeous.
Goth, new wave classic.
Absolutely superb. Love the distinctive sound of Robert Smith's vocals which depicts the sound of The Cure. So ahead of its time and still very relevant today. There are echoes of brilliant bands such as Joy Division and New Order threaded throughout the album. Didn't want it to end. It's a favourite on my play list.
Interesting! This is only The Cure’s second album and already they’ve moved on from their early punky sound, introducing electronic drums and getting almost ambient on some tracks (“Three” has always been one of my favourites). As a Cure fan it’s not really an album I think about a lot but it gets five stars because it’s got “A Forest” on it. Call me biased!
Gostei demais em
I really love the choices they made in this album. I was familiar with more of the pop parts of the Cure, and this one defied my expectations!
Assombramento gótico com delicadeza. A banda sempre esteve a frente do seu tempo.
awaomee
Every Cure album is a 10
Very mellow compared to the albums I was introduced to in the 90s.
This is the album where The Cure moved forward into atmospheric post-punk, almost gothic territory - stimulated by Robert Smith spending time with the Banshees. It's almost sound painting. The single A Forest is excellent, as is Play For Today. An enjoyable album, and quite influential on other bands around this time.
Great album
Great album
Wow, what an album. Perfect length, amazing atmosphere, booming bass, Robert Smith's unique vocals. The Cure's second album, recorded on a low budget (the song "The Final Sound" was supposed to be more than 52 seconds but they ran out of tape). I saved most of the album to my "album era playlist", a first on this run of album listens. I also immediately played the entire album again upon finishing. A good sign! I imagine myself coming back to this album regularly. Favourites: Play for Today Secrets In Your House A Forest M At Night Seventeen Seconds 5 stars. Best I've heard thus far here.
4.5 - I love the cure and it's nice to listen to stuff that isn't just the big hits. I think the use of guitar is so unique and could happily listen to this for hours
Classic
I'm generally a fan of the band, and this record is a great example of early Cure. It's very atmospheric, with some really interesting musical choices. They became a bit more poppy later on, which I didn't like as much.
THE CURE !! pretty cover like the names of the songs within the album and it's pretty easy to connect to 1- almost spooky sounding with blocked chords 2- interesting shift to groovy after the first song 3- interesting vibes, tuned out a bit and nothing really caught my attention 4- love the sound, lyrics and all (though there are very few lyrics) 6- short and spooky (like 54 seconds ish, less than a minute for sure) 7- very little break between 5 and 6, no fade even, continues spooky vibe and scene, feels like lost in a dark mysterious forest throughout (called a forest), picks up beat eventually like running through the trees to escape something unknown but scary, space ish sounds, lyrics like would be over an intense scene with a girl running through the trees with flowing dress and scarves (like a winter get up kinda thing) and she keeps looking back, stumbling a bit, but keeps running and we never see the thing that scared her or is chasing her, lots of grey, white, and black colors, would likely be a black and white film kinda thing, a longer song, maybe the longest on the album at 5:54, just about 6 minutes 8- (M) similar guitar riffs and beats, feels a bit like running still and much more lyrical, starting off with lyrics and almost telling a story, like the slow down at the end 9- (at night) a bit of a more electric feel and silence between the songs, sounds like static, like the end of the movie or whatever and the bad is winning, kinda tuned out at the end, but very the cure feeling with vocals and sounds 10- (seventeen seconds), back to guitar and drums kinda vibe, slight beat pick up about a minute and a half through, softer sounding robert smith vocals, everything is quieter now and other lyrics feel like a bittersweet ending like the nightmare ended with a victory but with hard choices and lots of death at the end kind of feeling "17 seconds a measure of life" 4 minutes exactly, I always wonder about lengths of songs, curious about this one too :/ Kinda ends how it started, but sadder rather than more urgent or adrenaline pumping, needed to sit for a bit after listening shorter songs compared to other of their songs I think very the cure sounding with vocals (thanks robert smith) Short and spooky, short and sweet, would listen to again playing a spooky board game like betrayal at the house on the hill or whatever, maybe to do homework in winter or if it's a quieter day with some rain or showers, cloudy feel, not really for a sunny kind of day
Liked it even more than expected.
What a rich and unique concept, everything is to love here !!!
This album is so cool. Had I been born in the 70s, maybe I would have been goth, because The Cure just has a sound that oozes style. While I liked much of the album, In Your House really surprised me, followed by Three. I also liked A Forest, Seventeen Seconds, and I'm a Cult Hero. Great album.
Huge favorite
- This album feels like eating salmon at a nice restaurant - Perfect tone and vibe - Can be great for either deep listening or background vibes
Let’s go this is my favorite cure album. Darker than their debut, not suicidal like their next couple before their more pop turn. The guitar work is so good. This is the cure album I come back and listen to the most. Rating: 4.9
Reminded me of my childhood
Great while working!
Controversially, this may be the peak of The Cure’s goth post-punk era for me. I had to sit with this truth a lot, because I don’t personally love them for their goth era. Do I really want to rate this a 5/5? Does it achieve that status, even if I would place other albums by The Cure above it? Is it a bit sloppy, a bit loose with its playing? Yes. Is that maybe the result of an amateurish first attempt to shift the band’s entire aesthetic? Maybe. Are there a couple of instrumental songs that are just padding tracks? Sure, but strangely enough, I would listen to them out of context from this album, too. Despite its obvious critiques, this album just has a mood, a vibe, and that vibe is like a siren. It’s an enticing record, a life-changing record, even. I know it was for my high school girlfriend, who went from twee to goth a week after she first heard this and “Juju.” (Thankfully we’re cool now, so there’s no hard feelings around this listen.) There’s a pop sensibility here in “A Forest,” “Play for Today,” and “M” that appeals to me, keeps me going as a listener. And that’s then mixed against this very cool, slow-brewing darkness in songs like “Three” and “Seventeen Seconds” that perks my ears up, and I can’t avert my eyes, like I’m seeing a wolf during a walk in the woods. Honestly, I think I’m just trying to justify my emo love for The Cure, one of my favorite bands ever, and that’s silly. My emo heart loves The Cure and this is some of their best 🖤🥀⛓️🖤
Un classique !!!!
During the years The Cure released their albums, say, between this one and Wish, I really, extremely didn't care for them. And even less so after. But it's been a very nice journey in the recent many years to (re-)discover what I had not been into, missed or ignored as a circa teenager and what it does to me today. The Cure, for instance. I'd already come to cherish the two "hits" of the album and the whole of it, not to my surprise, does not disappoint. On repeat, today=5
Good sad boi music
The Cure at their most echoed out and skeletal. Absolute sewer dweller post-punk for sunglasses inside types (my 4th favorite Cure album if the mood is right)
❤️
just a beauty, mate
„A Forest“ ist einer meiner Lieblingssong. nicht nur deswegen, sondern aufgrund des Gesamtwerkes, das die düstere Stimmung der Platte auf den Hörer überträgt ohne in Schrille abzudriften ist das Album sensationell. Der Band gelingt die künstlerische Loslösung von der Vorband von Siouxsie and the Bashees zur Etablierung einer neuen Musikrichtung … „ Play for Today“. 😀
not a single skippable song 10/10
Love this album, the melancholia, the simplicity of the chords and beats. Hard to pick a favorite track.
BL: I love The Cure, "A Forest" off this album is one of my favourite songs to blast whilst driving in the car at night. So it'll be good to listen to this album the whole way through. AL: An amazing atmospheric listen. All of the album feels like its building up to A Forest, and the album follows a linear lyrical theme. It comes together with an awesome closer track. I've always felt an affinity with The Cure as they come from around where I come from. An awesome album and one I'm glad I got round to listening to. FT: "A Forest", "M", "Seventeen Seconds" 5/5
This was ok momentum builds up after a few songs. Minimal lyrics also but I guess the guitars and intents are well put together and some songs have a nice groove.
Great listen. Always been a casual fan of The Cure. And I was looking forward to listening to more of them so this was delightful.
Always one of my favorites!!
Sweet sound
Pure synth bliss
Reminds me of college…love it!
Better than I used to give it credit for
Super chill. Good songwriting. Would listen again
The soundtrack to anxiety, combining a certain minimalist glass-like chordal progression and disruption with active dissonance, it creates an eerie atmosphere. If you’ve been way too update recently, give this a quick listen and it will drop you back to Earth and maybe further. Still and all, for those not triggered by music, a wonderful, fascinating work of art combining the best of the classical world and post-punk.
Robert Smith was a mere 22 years old when he released this album... and would go on touring with it for another 40 years, in fact I went to see the Cure playing last year and they were still on point. I always wonder was the Cure track "M" an inspiration for Curt Cobain with his Nirvana hit "About a Girl." Absolutely loved this album, and the new music on their later albums reflected back to their roots in this album.
play for today, secrets
On of my favourite albums ever
I really enjoyed this album and loved having it for a few days over the weekend. I haven't listened to much of The Cure, I really only know their bigger hits, so I loved listening to a full album and it makes me wonder why I haven't got into them before? Maybe because of their reputation? Even though it says their music is Goth rock, the beats and synth are pretty upbeat. Maybe it's just by comparison less depressing than the music I normally listen to? Fave track: A Forest (and I love the Ramin Djawadi cover for Westworld, so much so this album led me to sharing it with my 15yo and now we've started watching the show from the beginning!)
Love it
Outstanding! A true classic album
This album is great. It’s a blueprint to indie and emo and a lot of pop music. Mixing kinda trash tho
One of my favourites!
saw them play the entire thing live about 10 years ago, it’s a perfect album
More goth albums please
Great Album. I had listened to a Cure song here and there, but never a while album. The instrumentals were fantastic
Come closer and see See into the trees Find the girl While you can Come closer and see See into the dark Just follow your eyes Just follow your eyes I hear her voice Calling my name The sound is deep In the dark I hear her voice And start to run Into the trees Truly an outstanding album. 5/5
Another iconic album that I somehow never heard before. That's my vibe!
Stunning.
Love
Secrets: Openly available to listen to Three: Track 5 The Final Sound: Followed by 4 more songs Seventeen Seconds: 4 minutes long This album is full of lies but really good
Wow. Second Cure album on here and I've loved them both! How have I never gotten into them before!? Honestly blown away. Regretting skipping them at Glasto 2019 now. 4.5*, rounding up to 5* as I rounded Disintegration down
For the better part of 40 years, The Cure and Joy Division have had the post-punk genre in a chokehold. I have always wanted to get into The Cure, but I wasn't ever really sure if I would like them that much. But this was probably the best way for me to start. It is also just the perfect album for Halloween. It's moody, brooding, and hazy, and sometimes feels like a daze as these dark melodies swirl around you. This album sounds amazing. Chorus is one of my absolute favorite effects you can put on a guitar, and every lead guitar is absolutely drowning in chorus on here. They fill your ears and your head with these dense and deeply rich guitar and bass parts. I can also appreciate how the drums kind of take the back end on the record. Most of what Tolhurst is playing is quite simple, especially on tracks like the titular closer, and the drums sound much quieter compared to everything else, which lets the rest of the band take control and lead the way. Robert also seems to be taking more of a backseat. There is definitely singing, but it is infrequent. Some songs are entirely instrumental, and those that aren't have decently long passages without lyrics. Rating: 9/10
Really liked this. Will listen again. It had great guitar moments
Loving the dark tone of this album
Hitazo: A Forest Canción favorita: Play for today Sorpresa: M
Hadn’t really listened to full Cure albums prior to Disintegration but I’m going to fix that now. Loved this record.
this is like lcd soundsystems first album but he just went all in on that one sad song
This is incredible. I’m really fond of it and I’m really surprised.
Wasn't expecting this music from The Cure, it was delightfully "down tempo".
Really good album. The Cure remind me of old friends and high school. I've listened to a lot of their albums but it's never heard this one. I'll come back to this album.
Amazing Album. Awesome Gothic Punk
Amazing album!
My favorite from them. This music feels like walking blindly through a dense fog.
I could listen to this album over again and again and again and again and again...
The Cure's most perfect release every. Dark and engaging as hell!
Classic
Bass
Dark and moody, bleak and beautiful all the way through. The layers and layers of guitars with open string drones swirl all around drenched in reverb and flanger giving a dense relentless texture alternating with jangly arpegiatted hooks. The bass carries the main riffs, cutting through the whirling texture to drive things on. You can hear their punk beginings and disco leanings in the pummeling the drums get on when the pace picks up. Great drum sound - the snare really pops. All the instrumentation is in service of giving Robert Smith's vocals a platform for lift off. One of the best not obviously good singers, his range isn't great and his tone isn't rich or anything, but the depth from which he reaches to get the words out gives them a sense of edge-of-control desperation. All the elements are pretty basic really, but sound they make together are so good, and the melodic interplay of bass, guitar, and vocals is brilliant. Album was over before I realized it and hit replay immediately.
Even though the album has only 2 traditional banger tunes on it (A Forest and Play for Today), this is the moody, dark, meloncholic, vibe that is exceptionally done here. It seems a pretty basic layered drum, bass, guitar riff that has a drive and vibe that is dark and moody. I feel that though it predominantly doesn't have a melodic hook, the groove is what carries it forward and keeps you engaged. I could listen to this over and over. Excellent.
The Cure will always be a favorite, this album is no exception. Love the lyrics, love the composition, love it all.
Love this classic
A great album which includes one of my all time favourite tracks by The Cure - the brilliantly bleak but hypnotic "A Forest" - you can just imagine being chased through a forest on a moonlit night. The album also includes crowd favourite "Play For Today".
Songs that pulsate like living things on life support. Electronic heartbeats, waves crashing, lovely swooshing noises, swirling, enveloping, jangly, surprisingly danceable. A Forest is a great dance track. Part John Carpenter horror movie, part disco for the despondent.
I absolutely love The Cure. I absolutely love Seventeen Seconds. It’s dark, moody and minimal, yet there are so many memorable moments. I adore the melodic basslines and the spiky but somehow jangly guitars. A classic of the post-punk and gothic rock genres.
The 80s sounds I love, grooves, and a great balance of lyrics to instrumentals
4.8 One of my favourite Cure albums, just such a jump in terms of quality from TIB (not that it's not good but this is just MORE) and a healthy middle ground between Faith and TIB. Fave songs: M, At Night, Seventeen Seconds, In Your House, Play For Today
the song about Dave Forest is really good. in general this early post punk short back and sides Cure is very good.
Dave Forrest
It's The Cure, they always get a 5. Truth be told, this is a mid-level Cure album for me. Is The Head On The Door on this list? It should be. It could sub in for this one and I wouldn't mind one bit.
The perfect album when it's grey outside and you don't feel like doing stuff. I appreciate its consistency and how hypnotic it is.
I was going to give this album 4. But then I listened it one more time and one more time... The atmosphere of this album is great, hypnotizing. It is very homogeneous but not boring. Sound of guitar, drums and synths is perfect and timeless
Love the vibes of this album,
the cure made the best albums ever and like nobody knows them
i listen full album again and i still think that album is moody but very good.
I love it
