I like the guitar work and the solos, but the cheesy 80s pop shit and the unrivalled horniness of Prince I just cannot enjoy whatsoever
I mean it's incredible, genius album 5 stars, no notes, a killer start to finish.
Alright this is wonderful but I got bored during the first half of it. Let’s go crazy rules and the when doves cry to purple rain run is phenomenal. Everything after let’s go crazy but before doves sounds like it exists solely for the accompanying movie. Great movie though.
80s are not usually what I gravitate towards, but I did think that this is a great 80s albums relative to other 80s albums I'm familiar with. I found myself enjoying the the beat swaps in the middle of a lot of the songs. I appreciated the differing tempos across the album. I don't think that his vocals really stand out to me besides the screams and shrieks. I felt that the album got progressively stronger starting at Computer Blue. Most of the songs were fun to listen to and had many layers and textures in the beat. Prince obviously shreds on the guitar and Purple Rain rain is a classic for a reason; however, the song almost doesn't belong on the same record just by how different it is.
Great album. Opener is great. Beautiful ones is great. Darling Nicki is what I imagined every prince song to sound like. Side 2 to this record is even better. Only criticism is that sometimes the synths sound a little too ghostbusters, but ghostbusters kinda rules so whatever. I like princes shrieking on some of the tracks here, so good. Purple rain alone would have made this album worth listening to

Wow, incredible listen. Another one that I can't believe I put off for so long. This is definitely one of the most clear 5-star albums I've listened to yet! So many amazing songs. I'm going to listen to this again, a lot. Must-listen #89!

There a few of his tracks I like, and I don't think his music is 'bad' but .... it just bores me. I just can't ever get into it. This album is a great example of that. I think Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry are very good but the rest of the tracks are just monotonous filler with no positives. If I never heard this album again I wouldn't be at all bothered. If it came on again there's a 50/50 chance I would listen to it without skipping or turning it off. I reckon it's a 2 or 3 star, at best. On the basis of the aforementioned 2 good tracks I will go with 3 stars.
Love Prince. There were some weird moments that weren’t for me, but overall loved it.

When this album popped up the day after 1999, I thought it was a cruel joke. 1999 was so irrelevant today that i couldn't wait for it to be over. In the spirit of the game, though, I popped on Purple Rain and heck yea. The songs are succinct, more inspired, and the whole thing just rips. Crazy what 2 years can do for an artist. This record is very much so one to listen to (several times) before you die. 1999 has come and gone, though, and we don't need it again.
Definitely better than Sign 'O' The Times and 1999, both of which I gave a 3. But there's something in Prince's style that always stops his music just short of being truly legendary. Maybe it's the lack of distinctive melodic hooks (in most tracks), where an album like Thriller excels in exactly that way. Even Let's Go Crazy, a song defined by its fast, rhythmic synths and drum machine – which is surely the perfect setup to an incredibly catchy hit – ends up just being a hit. Not catchy. At least, not in the sense that it'll be stuck in my head for the rest of the evening. Prince creates music that kind of goes in one ear and out the other (no doubt magnified by the overdone 80s production style), and for that I can hardly justify a 5-star review. But man, I completely understand why this guy was (and is!) so popular. He exudes allure, sexuality, mystery. Not just in his lyrics (which are suspect enough) but in his vocal delivery, his pained and lustful guitar playing, the contrasts between high and low energy. In these ways, where countless other artists miss the mark, Prince really delivers. No other famous artist has quite as high an innuendo-to-runtime density. The album art is hilarious to me, because it's so ugly it wraps back around to being kind of great. Purple and orange is a terrible colour duo. And those floral margins are completely unnecessary. I love it. Other highlights are the unexpectedly emotional ballad The Beautiful Ones, the otherworldly Darling Nikki, and the monumental title track. Dang, I wish I could give this album a higher rating. 4/5 Key tracks: Let's Go Crazy, The Beautiful Ones, Purple Rain

Didn’t ‘get’ Prince first time around but there’s some depth there
Ugh. Well. I know the title track is a big stink pile, but this was bound to happen. Every self-proclaimed music fanatic’s favourite pop icon. I am prepared to be a hater as always. More pop for dimwits to intellectualize? Most likely. J Geils band type beat. Wasn’t this song actually something else? Flashback? Feed down? Whatever. Something. This is dog shit. But he’s cool right??? Garbage radio pop with a token guitar solo. I’m sure I’ll be going crazy by the end of this. OH THE SONG IS FREEZE FRAME. He actually stole from the J Geils band. Man. You could’ve stole from anybody, and you picked a slightly worse redux of “Freeze Frame.” This should be one hell of a ride. Esoteric Dungeon Synth featuring Cyndi Lauper. It deescalates into a super boring song with a big violin backer. He sounds asleep. 0 for 2. Man. I expected to be lampooning this album for being radio pap, but this is something far more dire. This is a shy boy with no musical talent whispering into his iPhone so as to not wake his disappointed mother. This is almost punk in how bad it is. If it wasn’t delivered with such a depressing earnestness, it would be kind of campy. Oh no. He’s gettin’ fired up. He doesn’t care that he’s waking mom up. He’s going to be a star. I do like some of the screeching, but we were too far gone to start. Ok, Computer (Blue). All roads lead to Radiohead. This one is at least kind of fun, but it’s still stupid. About 1:30 of song followed by a lame guitar solo that sounds like the closing credits of a bad anime. This is a joke album. I’ve decided. The greatest prank ever pulled. It’s a brilliant takeoff on the state of pop music. These lyrics are terrible. Considering they’re front and centre along with light drumming, they’re kind of hard to ignore. With different lyrics, this would be better. Alas, we don’t live in that alternate universe and unfortunately “Nikki” has “ground” this one to a halt. Think of Milhouse. Think of Milhouse. That’s not just to distract me from the frequent use of the word “grind” to describe sex. Michael Jackson “hee hees” aside, this vocal hook is grating to me and the music is nothing. Lyrics are, again, terrible. But let’s ride it into the ground. Prince? You would… Die? 4 Me? This makes me feel bad for saying your music is so terrible this whole time. On second thought, and considering this individual is actually deceased, I’ll leave the whole concept of death alone. I will not leave this track without saying that this is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. Listless. There is something so lifeless about this album. I don’t know if it’s the production, the environment I’m in, or hell, maybe the volume. Purple Rain is so overblown. A song for losers. I can’t articulate how much I despise this lighter waving pile of dreck. This feels like an excellent time to mention that this guy was also anti-gay marriage, and referred to a 16 year old as his future wife (he was right) when he was 32. I don’t know man. From the terrible music, to the sketchy details about his life, this was a downer. But once again, the geniuses of music review have sainted ol’ Princeton (full name) here as the second coming. As a musical idiot and I suppose a general all-purpose idiot, I certainly hope we don’t see a second coming of this loser. An album that enters with a whimper, stays there, and leaves with a slightly more tired whimper. Truly awful. 0 HIGHLIGHTS: Serfdom seems preferable

This is a sick album. Loved it. Never saw the movie and don’t ever care to. I wonder if it was supposed to be good. When doves cry is one of my favorite pop songs ever. Price was just good at everything he did although not sure about his acting. He can certainly play guitar, sing, dance and command an audience. Being bold and giving 5. Loved it.

Iconic
Funny to get this album the day after I was conflicted about listening to Michael Jackson "Off the Wall." It was nice to be able to enjoy Prince's genius (which, let's face it, blows Michael Jackson out of the water) unencumbered by the baggage of the whole sexual assault of children. This album feels equally very much of its time and way ahead of its time in equal measure.
I do get the significance, and I do know the talent and honestly, he's just an ICON for sure... however... ugh, half this album is so annoying, honestly.
delicious, finally some good fucking food
Another chance for Prince to achieve his greatest goal - convincing me that he really is all that. And do you know what? He's done well here. It feels redundant to point out that the guitar playing on here is absolutely [mind-blown emoji] throughout, but it can't pass unremarked. Overall the songs feel deeper than on 1999, and the big hits are beyond great. Despite that, there is a bit too much filler to get it into absolute classic territory. Needless to say, the 8 minute closing title track is the highlight; partly because it's dead good, and partly because it takes you straight back to a power ballads night, on your (increasingly sticky) knees, arms in the air as you bellow out the 45th chorus. Lovely stuff.
Tip top album
I hadn't actually heard any Prince albums in full before this, 5 stars easy. The second half is so comically good that it makes up for the few songs in the first half I'm not as keen on (Darling Nikki is just too horny for me). Baby I'm a Star goes so fucking hard, I've listened to it ten times this morning

It's gotta be a 5. Only thing I struggled with was that the well known songs are so well known and iconic it becomes hard to judge the album as a whole.
Started a 3, ended a low 4. The hits from the album are strong, the rest was okay. I don't think this is the best album ever, though. 4/5

I like Prince and Purple Rain is a masterpiece. It's a bit over the top and I think you need to be in the right mindset to really get into it. I was not digging Prince yesterday. Perhaps a different day and it's a 5.

Really liked this album
A true and original artist, and a brilliant album. Only song I wasn't a fan of really was "Darling Nikki", because well, it was shite. I was torn between a 4 and a 5 for this album overall.. but then I remembered I gave Tom Waits a 4.. and it was definitely a better album than the beloved "SwordFishTrombone" (although he did write most of that album whilst chained to a radiator). So 5 out of 5, purple rain with all of its crashing symbols and big guitar riffs was a great end to the album.
Honestly one of my favourite albums, by one of my favourite artists. I think he’s the most complete musician and performer there’s ever been. Sexy as fuck. Charismatic beyond belief. Writes it all. Plays it all. Sings it all. The movie to this album is so of its time, but adds some great context to songs that I probably liked out of nostalgia as much as I liked them because they were him. I honestly can’t speak highly enough of him or or this album. The album is 5/5. And then there are moments on it that are beyond that. Lets Go Crazy is the perfect way to kick this off. Darling Nikki is mad sex crazed. When Doves Cry is one of the exceptional songs that goes beyond a 5 for me. It also kicks off the second half of the album which is flawless. I Would Die 4 U is incredible and gets me emotional. Baby I’m A Star is actually one I prefer the live version of, especially at the superbowl. Then Purple Rain is one of the greatest songs of all time. Words cannot do this justice, nor can 5 measly stars. Deserves more.

I really want to like Prince just for his persona and was hoping this album would feature anything I can point to and go "I might not like purple rain, but this is great". Sadly, it doesn't. I don't know what it is with Prince's music, but it just doesn't faze me at all. All I hear are frustratingly generic 80s synth pop beats and the occasional good guitar solo.
Purple Rain is still an exciting listen 40 years after its initial release. Got some drama, got some controversy, got some smash hits, Side B just kills it! His Purpleness is still on the way up with this album. Was a great listen in ‘84, is a great listen today. (4.9*s)
Prince is an icon and this album no doubt solidifies that. I don't love every song on it but it's still a very good listen. Parts of the backing tracks feel a little corny but there's def some hits on here and the closer is an undeniable classic. I had no idea "Darling Nikki" was the reason behind the Parental Advisory stickers on albums so that was cool (I don't really like the song though). 3.45 for this one.
Prince sews together an epic here and puts his full range of creativity on display. Many hits with "Doves Cry" top track but the lesser played ones like "Computer Blue" are where you really get into the depths of his digital talents. Hard to see Prince as a baddass on a bike with the cover but the man/woman/alien? sure has left a mark on the music world. Need to watch the film again...3.58.
Purple Rain is an iconic album no doubt. It deserves the praise as it contains a handful of fun hits and wraps with one of the all time ballads with the title track. While it's difficult to divorce the album from the film, if you look at it as just an album it deserves to be on every list. Say what you will about Prince's personal life or ridiculous antics but the man knew how to write a tune and orchestrate a movement. One of the best showmen ever and Purple Rain is considered his peak by many. His Superbowl halftime show is one of those historical transcendent performances mainly due seeing Purple Rain during a rainstorm. 3.67 stars
This is not close to my favorite Prince album but it's still fantastic. It's pretty poppy and I can pretty much skip Doves and the title track, but there's just so much great stuff here. Let's Go Crazy is one of my favorite Prince songs too.

Outside of Computer Blue, a pretty close to perfect album. Going with a 5 here because the other 8 tracks are so well done. But more like a 9/10 5 and not a 10/10 5.
I gave this a listen, but it confirmed that I'm not a Prince fan. I do think that he was a very good guitar player.
Listened to it twice, then went back to 1999 and then found a live recording from the tour promoting Purple Rain. Turned into a Prince day, and it was a better day for it! I think either this or MJ's Thriller have to be the #1 album of the 1980s, and while Michael arguably came out of the gate harder, P.Y.T. just doesn't sound the same anymore. And Thriller was borderline schlocky and cool kids were dismissive. But nobody dismissed Prince and Purple Rain. When MJ wanted ripping guitar on Beat It he called Eddie Van Halen. When Prince wanted some shredding on When Doves Cry or the title track, he just grabbed his axe. MJ wanted hits, whereas Prince had a vision and it was so distinctive and so fully realized that it sucked you in. MJ went to the mountain, but Prince made the mountain come to him.
So. Much. 80s. Here! I'm not really a Prince fan, and this may in fact be the first time I've heard this album beyond the four now-classic singles. That said, it's almost exactly what I expected it to sound like, and I enjoyed seeing the video for "Let's go crazy" and its concert shots; it highlight what an impressive performer he was as well as an accomplished musician. I'm also struck by how different and much more interesting Sinead O'Conner's cover is of "I would die 4 u". (Also hilarious to read that the song "Purple rain" was originally conceived as a country song collaboration with Stevie Nicks, but she freaked out when she got the music to write lyrics to.) I've never really understood why Michael Jackson had so much of a bigger fan base than Prince, given Prince's added depth of musical abilities, but I'm not sure Prince ever tried to cultivate his celebrity status the way Michael Jackson did. I do wonder if Prince tried to compete with Jackson, though, given that he produced and scored a feature-length film for "Purple Rain", which certainly beats out "Thriller" lengthwise if nothing else. And full credit to Prince that this album rarely sounds like a soundtrack, with a few exceptions like the oddball "Computer blue" track. Even though I'm not a big fan of his music or style, it's hard not to respect the magnitude of this album in his career.
Not my favorite Prince album though "When Doves Cry" is terrific and is the reason I'm giving this a 4.

Purple Rain New Faves - Let's Go Crazy - The Beautiful Ones (that ending goes crazy) - Computer Blue - Darling Nikki - I Would Die 4 U - Baby I'm a Star - Purple Rain obviously I do like Take Me With U and When Doves Cry buy the others hit just for me more I think. I heard Purple Rain before the album and for me Purple Rain does not fit the vibe of the album 😭 but it also does? I don't know. The vibe is really fun and funky with some slower tracks more like sexy ballads but Purple Rain is just... heart wrenching. The main meat of the album was just so so good. This is what the 80s feels like even if I've never lived through it. Honestly I only give 5s if I like every song... and I do. It's a 5.

Pretty good
Don’t love the title track for some reason, but other than that this album fucking rips. I probably listened to it 5-6 times this weekend. At first I was frustrated with the strange arrangements, feeling like a lot of the effects and instrumentation were not additive. Now I’m starting to see more clearly the genius in Prince. I Would Die 4 U into Baby I’m a Star…. Sheesh! An example of the strange arrangements (credit to Frank for pointing out to me) When Doves Cry has no bass, instead the bass notes are played in the drums? I think the drum line also carries the progression. I’m not sure I totally understand why he made these choices but the results are hard to argue with. This album was seen as the most “pop” version of Prince to date, which IMO works well. We get hooks, normal length songs but also the Prince weirdness. I was also happy to hear him sending it on vocals and on guitar. Someday I need to watch the movie to see how this all ties together. I still don’t connect with this music the way I do with my all time favorites, but I have a feeling this album will be one that I listen to many more times over the years. Might be on my way to becoming a full blown Prince guy!
Ok, I get it now. This album fucking rocks. Taking out the bass line of when doves cry and somehow that making the whole thing work is the move of a demented sex genius. Take Me With U and I Would Die 4 U are my two favorites, but Darling Nikki also rocks. Was looking up chords for Darling Nikki yesterday and someone in the comments used a Samuel Johnson quote to describe Prince's sound: "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." Love that. He's a sex beast.
Lets Go Crazy, Take me with you, When doves cry and Purple Rain are excellent songs that have aged pretty well - especially for 80s music (in my broad opinion, the 80s didnt age as well as 60s/70s sound ideas) I draw a lot of parallels between what PR is and what 1999 was (2 years apart - Purple Rain has the Revolution backing it). Everything ive read makes it seem like The Revolution reinvented Princes sound, but I disagree. Example: Lets Go Crazy and 1999 are both pretty much crowd pleasing singles with the same vibe I honestly like 1999 more as an album. With that said, Purple Rain (the song) is truly Princes masterpiece 3.5 stars and rounding up because i felt bad I didnt give 1999 4 stars
Started out slow. Let’s go crazy doesn’t grab me. But The Beautiful Ones rocked. I don’t often love screaming vocals but this song joined Oh Darling in my scream hall of fameDarling Nikki was weird and awesome. I think I get Prince now
I enjoyed this about the same as 1999. Some really fun songs - Let’s Go Crazy and Baby I’m a Star are my favorites. Not really a bad song on this album, but just don’t click completely with Prince. I didn’t know Prince and Darling Nikki was the original instigator for the Parental Advisory warning. I had such an obsession and fascination with any album that had that little sticker. I remember really wanting the first Sugar Ray album (because Fly was all over the radio in third grade) but it had a song that repeated “Cash, I need some fucking cash”, so while I was able to borrow the album from my baby sitter at the time and hear this piece of art, I was not able to lobby my parents to let me own it myself.

A great album that I don’t really resonate with. It absolutely feels like a moment in time and whenever i listen to Prince i think about my mom and how much she enjoyed it when it first came out. Ultimately not for me but I can see the greatness in it
How can you not like an album that single-handedly started a federal war on censorship in music? Prince at his Prince-iest, horny, fun, and funky, this album will forever be one of my favorites. 10/10 baby I’m a STAR, and fuck Tipper Gore.

It speaks to Prince's seemingly bottomless genius that something like Purple Rain would be dashed off as a yet another day effort when for many it remains the single most indelible era of his career. Everything that was built up by this point comes to fruition here as the musical polymath dips his toes into the waters of Lake Minnetonka, and world domination, thus not only changing the game but laying down certain restrictions that are both stimulating and taken for granted. Whether or not it needed parental advisories, Purple Rain was yet another crack of the whip that would define most artists' careers but, for Prince, it was just another chapter in a much larger story.

Not every individual song is a banger. But as a whole this entire album rocks. Plus the highs are so astronomically high that I can’t help but give this a 5/5

Iconic album. Prince was a stronger musician than even this album shows. But this one showcases a whole production approach to an album that eclipses his singular musical talent.

It captures the 80’s perfectly in its sound, but considering it came out two years after Michael Jackson’s thriller it seems a bit mediocre. Also fairly corny.

Listening to the 2015 remaster if that matters. The solo in computer blue mixed with the keyboard matching the same line in the background ALMOST makes it sound like it's being vocoded/talkboxed. Fun effect. Just loved this album. Not much else to say. Not sure why it didn't hit as hard when i listened in the day
As much as I don’t care for Prince’s music, this is one of the all time greats.
Not really into Prince or this album much. I can't get myself to enjoy this more 80's synth driven Funk. Perhaps its suffers from a lot of music in the decade wanting to sound like Prince. His guitar playing and songcraft is still incredible though. Let's Go Crazy is a fun song and When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are good songs even if overplayed. Don't really dig most of the album tracks on here, they either don't stick or have some weird other thing about them that I dislike. Small note but why the hell is the flower pattern on the sides of the album cover here?

Come To conclusion I don’t like Prince and this overall importance. I get an intro but seems like every songs take 30 seconds to a minute to get going. I hate things that try to sound self important. Not all of the album is my preference, but Prince does some really unique and creative things that are undoubtedly impressive.
This album is a ton of fun from start to finish. Groovy tunes, extremely technical guitar solos, and cool synth hooks. Not every track is a banger, but almost all of them are. I am so glad I got to hear some Prince.

It's alright. Definitely listenable, but I didn't really feel as though I got anything from listening to this one outside of a few songs that I've heard in passing. The spread of genres is pretty interesting. If the R&B/funk roots were trimmed I could see myself liking this one.
I can hear the influence of this album on the wider music community, absolutely. But my connection to the same religious background affects my perception of the lyrics and this is a rough album for me. Love the synth and instrumental prowress, struggle with the rest.

The highs are about as good as it gets. The lows are not bad by any means, but there are a couple songs that I could live without. I’ve been really waffling between a 4 and 5. Might be harsh, but just doesn’t quite get there for me. 9/10

I have never seen the movie, nor am I very curious to watch it either. That being said, these songs are amazing. There's a very 80's sheen on everything that would in theory make it sound dated, but here it just works somehow. Also, very influential substitution of words like 'you' becoming 'U' or 'for' becoming '4'. This type of stuff has become so ubiquitous people forget who pioneered/popularized it. Ah Prince, you beautiful weirdo. I remember, when I was a little kid, a family friend who was a few years older had a poster of this album cover in his bedroom. I had no idea who Prince was or what the poster was about. I just knew that guy was cool as fuck.
Often rated as a top 10 album, it doesn't deliver on that promise for me. It's great...some absolutely great songs (loved Computer Blue and the singles are, well singles), but something just didn't quite click for me. It seems so theatrical...probably the whole movie thing but whatever.
I had a sexy bath while I listen to this album, it's a sexy bath because I was having a bath before spending the night with my woman. Which is something that Prince would do.

The tracklist, the guitar, the movie, the legend that is Prince. An incredible album that starts so energetically with Let's Go Crazy and finishes so powerfully with Purple Rain. This album certainly not only defined Prince's legacy but clearly helped shaped the 80s and the music industry altogether. Even in songs that don't matchup up to the album's biggest hits, catchy choruses and fierce guitar play makes every song a joy.

this mf ripped a leitmotif off of the hit song "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" from the Risk of Rain 2 ost!!!!! Tremendously good, each song has so much going on, yet it stays crisp and fresh. Great use of the synthesizer, legendary guitar solos, incredible singing (even when he uses his signature Prince wail). I had only heard "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain", and "Soft and Wet" from Prince before. I assumed that those were some of his biggest hits, and that the rest of his music was lacklustre, although after a full album I understand why he gets the acclaim that he does.
I know “let’s go crazy” and I love it. I’ve never listed to this album before. Only the singles.

One of two, I would argue, utterly perfect ‘80s documents highlighting the ideal marriage of rock, pop, and R&B (the other being Thriller), but this one I believe has the higher degree of difficulty. Not only does it include a deeply funky sensibility, but Prince wrote all the songs himself (he had a little help on “Computer Blue”), and the lyrics reflect such an engaging and personal plunging of the intersection of love, sexuality, and madness. A thoroughly fine achievement.

mesmerizing, colorful and vivacious, this is the abbey road of the 80s, a truly historical and pivotal sound when it comes to pop and rock music. prince is often erotic with his lyrics, but it's a tasteful and artistic sort of erotic. this album is comparable to a centuries-old marble statue, often nude, but symbolizing human grace, expression and elegance. i opened up the vinyl record and several doves burst from the inside.
Killer Album. Two stand outs in When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy. Consistently good.

I know this is a classic, but it just sounds too dated.
a classic for sure, and a good one at that, but i dont really have an affinity with the pop of this era so i guess it just doesnt hit as hard for me. i can see how this could be a 5 for many many people out there, just not quite for me. (the fact that i'm having to defend a 4 for this shows the regard this album is held to)
I want to like this more. I _WANT_ to give it a 5, really. But I always felt the title track was a bit long (but that's a quibble, it's still frigging amazing), and "Darling Nikki" is... ok? I remember the blowback from it a little when I was a teen. But ultimately, the song itself has to have a good groove and beat, and I never thought so. And "The Beautiful Ones"... would have been better if he toned his vocals down a little, for me. But the other songs, geez. They are all so. damn. GOOD. Not even the big ones, "Take Me With U", "Computer Blue," and then the whole second SIDE of the album is just... awesome stuff. It's on the cusp of being a 5-star album for me, but those two weak songs drag it down to maybe a 4.4. The rest of it is so strong, what a great snapshot of the time. Prince's guitarwork on this album is freaking awesome. I mean, I know he played a lot of instruments on the album and the Revolution also do some good work, but what he does with the guitar parts is masterful. Just look at a few of the songs. Let's Go Crazy - pulsing and fuzzy fun to start (50s in) and then face melting at the bridge solo and the outro. Take Me with U - subtle acoustic, did you catch it? Computer Blue - I love this track, so experimental, so rocking, new age guitar to start and then that mini-solo halfway through (oh yeah), and finishes with more classic lead guitar work. Darling Nikki - sultry to match the lyrics. When Doves Cry - the opening riff (a dead giveaway to the song as much as the bee bop keyboard) and later the bridge. Purple Rain - his most complete performance, what an epic song for all of the instruments and the sound, but also so much deft guitarwork and man at the 4 minute mark he crushes it. And on all these songs blending in just the right amount and right kind of synth. He nails the combination on each and every song. The 80's was full of cheesy synth and music that sounded too fake, but that is not the case here. Or rarely - maybe a little on The Beautiful Ones but he brings it home with some sweet guitar (it's in there for the last 90s). And even when you don't really notice the guitar at all - I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm a Star - the songs are rocking and so fun. A truly classic album.
I'm going to use this review as an opportunity to flex...I was at Super Bowl XLI when Prince performed Purple Rain in the pouring rain. It was an amazing experience and absolutely colors how I review this album. Core memory unlocked, so just hearing the title track makes me want to give this album a 5. Trying to look at it objectively, this album is the epitome of 80s production. It would be great to hear these songs re-recorded with more modern production, but the bones of the songs are all outstanding so let's put that aside. Prince's talent shines through on every track, including singing, songwriting, and of course guitar playing. I want to ding the rating slightly for the oh-so-80s sound, but that just feels wrong. 5 it is. Favorite tracks: Let's Go Crazy (great sound, 80s or not), Take Me With U (very 80s, but good driving track), When Doves Cry (classic), I Would Die 4 U, and, of course, Purple Rain, Purple Rain (gotta say it twice). RIP Prince.

The production value is insane and would have been amazing in any style he wanted to make. but with these songs its just about the most perfect album I think I've heard on this list yet. This is very futuristic, yet very retro album. Good combination of synth and guitar. Several songs on this albu. sound like there is a few songs in one song, becauase of changing atmosphere in the song. The best two songs of the album are "Purple rain" and "When doves cry". General rating of the album 8/10.

I have nothing really clever to say about Purple Rain. It’s Prince’s best sounding album, and possibly his most sincere. He was a fascinating artist for his ability to mix the romantic sincerity of songs like I Would Die 4 U or When You Were Mine with the unrelenting horniness of Head or Darling Nikki. And Purple Rain itself is just an annoyingly perfect piece of art. That’s true for a lot of the album really, I love the opening to Baby I’m A Star for it’s effortless transition from I Would Die 4 U. But Purple Rain specifically, god man, how do you write something like that?

When almost any song from this album comes on, you can’t help but tap your fingers or bop up and down to the rhythm.
I'm not a fan of Prince, this was a hard listen, the difference in vibe between each song is jarring, the first song has a shit ton of reverb that makes it sound like it was recorded in a cave.
It was fine. Must have been a bigger deal at the time, but by current standards it's just fine.

At the outset, I confess that whenever I've listened to Prince's music I've never found it particularly engaging. Maybe it's an age thing. I've played Purple Rain three times now. And that is three times too many. It's shallow, crass and dull music. It seems to be a product of a sex-obsessed bloke in frilly shirts and high heels. I just don't get why Prince has acquired this aura of god-like genius.

An absolutely brilliant album. Surely one of the greatest of all time.
Prince was something else, and Purple Rain is what cemented him as an icon. No two songs are the same, as Prince bounced around genres and tones and themes. "Let's Go Crazy" is such, such a fun way to start off the album, and I love its high energy. A kickass instrumental is tucked inside "Computer Blue," a hidden gem if there ever was one. "Darling Nikki" is daring for its lyrics alone; it's a great song but it's remembered more due to Tipper Gore. A shame considering how hard Prince goes in that song. "When Doves Cry" is so groundbreaking because the bassline is absent, something not done before. I've always loved the way "I Would Die 4 U" (stylized in typical Prince fashion) seamlessly turns into "Baby I'm a Star." The title track ends the album and is a soaring ballad that I never want to end. Anyway, for all my talk, probably if this album was done by anyone other than Prince, I would give this a 5. But Purple Rain isn't Prince's best work, and I love other albums over this one. Purple Rain is good but not great. But I won't lie--I was thrilled when this album popped up. 4.5, to be fair.

When Doves Cry = 6 stars
so the first time that i ever hear something from this album is when a regional music award payed tribute to prince and all the artists that died in 2016 at the awarding ceremony in 2017, with my favourite artists covering "purple rain" and a bunch of songs, and the guitarist that i always admired soloed on the cover. the awesomeness of the cover makes me look foward to the album that may sounds more awesome. it did sounds awesome, but the first three tracks don't live up to my exception. they are just normal synth pop 4/5
This is #day107 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... yes, this is Prince, and this is Purple Rain. The record speaks for itself. Production-wise, it's next level: everything sounds lush like Hendrix and Chic had a baby. Also, those synths are almost intergalactic... Some of the biggest gems include "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," and, of course, the sheer sexiness and grandeur of the title track. Anyway, this is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day108.

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by Prince, originally released in 1984. This record contains some of Prince's biggest hits. Probably one of the best album opener/closer combo, and I'm not even that big of a Prince fan. This thing screams the 80s but Prince makes it work. Some would say it's overproduced but it's done pretty tastefully. It even has some psychedelic elements to it, as is to be expected from Prince. Not every song is an absolute banger but it's a damn solid album.
Prince is properly rated as one of the greatest of all time, but I would argue he’s under appreciated. He’s a musical genius whose work is overshadowed by his raw sexual charisma which makes people not take him seriously. Those who know, know. Prince is him.

Prince at his most confident, with his songwriting skills, his band, and his eccentricities all working together. Classic album from start to finish.
Just so enjoyable. I'll definitely listen to this again even if I haven't for many years.
80's lacy rock, purple soul, frilly funk, androgynous pop, high heeled jazz, you name it. Let's Go Crazy is one of my favorite all time songs. The Beautiful Ones starts out awfully but he redeems it at the 3:28 mark. The rest of the album has some great hits and not so good misses.
The youtube link gave me a blank screen. I search for the album independently on youtube and got a version that has remixes and additional material (e.g. the song Wonderful Ass). Unfortunately, this is the version of the album I need to rate. Prince is (was) unique, innovative, and iconic. I liked the songs in general, but also felt that the version of the album I had was meant more as an accompaniment to the movie (which I have not seen) than as a standalone work. Good songs. Some not so good. And bad arrangement?
Wow. Still so good. I think "Let's Go Crazy" was played at every one of our parties in college.
I'd never actually listened to this whole album. The hit songs are all bangers but the others are pretty meh.
Full disclosure: I’m a Minnesota girl and Purple Rain came out when I was a sophomore in high school. My friends and I saw the movie in the theater and shouted every time we saw a MN license plate and sang along to all the songs. First Avenue was my favorite hang in the 90s and I used to see shows at Glam Slam. I’ve been to the place where Apollonia jumped into the water (spoiler alert: it’s not Lake Minnetonka) and I’ve toured Paisley Park. I didn’t really need to listen to this to give it 5 stars, but I did anyway and still love it.

It's not my all-around favorite Prince material, but it's still Prince. It's Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. And Purple fucking Rain.

Do you like rock and funk music? Then this album is for you. These songs ain´t bad. I just don´t really like the lyrics there pretty weird. But overall I like the guys voice. The beat of the songs are great. Would I listen to this album no but I would recommend this album just because of the guys voice.
